    Barbaro Update: 27

    updates are now here.

Update 342: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (saturday night). Peter just visited Bobby to report the news, and said that Bobby looked good. Peter's tone was relatively upbeat!

A nice article in the UK Observer: The final furlong rehashes the Barbaro story. A good resource for those wanting to get a good handle on the entire set of events. You might also pick up one or two additional insights.

Thanks Heather for the lovely basket delivered to our barn by Kennett Florist. The goodies have been eagerly distributed between our barn and Michael Matz's barn. Much appreciated. A belated thanks to Brandi for the popcorn. Sorry to say that stayed in our barn! As I was in the barn this morning (Tim called me to tell me there was a basket of goodies etc.) I got a chance to see Red Aspen. She looks good after her race yesterday, but tired. I also ran into Sheila Barndollar, who has been instrumental in putting together the raffle for a Mustang for Mike Rea. The drawing is tomorrow at Delaware Park, after the fourth race I think. Tim and I are planning on going. I hope to win! Lets hope Mike continues his good progress.

Update 341: Its great Michael is spending a couple of days at Saratoga (I think he is returning monday) as he has enabled more media coverage for Bobby. This Times Union article: Barbaro touches a heart includes some of the same interview covered by the Racing Form article in update 340. Here are a couple of excerpts that are new:

"I have just never been around a horse that has been so popular," Matz said. "Even outside of the racing community ... I took the kids to a Phillies game a while back and we were just sitting in the stands watching a ballgame on a Saturday afternoon. Three people I didn't know just came up and asked how the horse was doing."

    and

"It would have been nice to see Barbaro run against Bernardini," Matz said quietly. "It would have been good for racing. But I'm not going to be sour. How can I be sour. The horse has done a lot for me. Now we are going to try and do as much as we can for him."

I had dinner at the Brette's last night. They gave me a win picture from the Tropical Park Derby (How cool is that ?) I asked Peter how he looks, given all the concern of no recent pictures. Peter said while he has dropped a little weight (inevitable) his coat looks great (shiny) and his eye is bright, two very good signs he is doing well. We talked about many Barbaro things. I asked about the Florida Derby, and the stretch dual. Peter considered that was the making of the transition from boy to man for the horse. He said Edgar told him afterwards that it was very easy (despite what we were seeing). He did gallop out very strongly. Peter is visiting this morning, so will get an update after that visit.

Update 340: No update yet for sunday, but I will likely know something by mid morning. In the meantime here are a couple of articles, one old and one new. The new one, from the Daily Racing Form, is essentially an interview with Michael Matz from yesterday in Saratoga: Matz keeping an eye on Barbaro. Michael relayed how the last few weeks have been:

"At one point I thought I was going to win the Triple Crown with this horse, next time I was sort of resigned to the fact maybe it wasn't supposed to be and he's going to come through this and be a great stallion," Matz said. "Then, when this other thing happened, I sort of resigned myself that they were going to put him down. Next morning I go and look, there he is bright-eyed. Every time I had myself resigned to something that was going to happen it never did. I don't think physically I was getting tired, emotionally I never knew what to expect."

He was also asked about Bernadini yesterday:

"I'm anxious to see the race," Matz said. "Bernardini's a real nice horse. It sure would have been nice to see them run against each other; that's never going to happen."

Matz was asked if part of him was rooting for Bernardini to lose so that his chances of unseating Barbaro as 3-year-old champion would diminish.

"Right now, I'm more worried about saving his life instead of whether he's 3-year-old champion," he said.

The second article, which I don't think I had seen, is about Peter Brette, some of his background etc: Exercise rider Brette on journey of a lifetime with Barbaro. Obviously this is an old article, and the journey has taken major turns since the article was written. The final piece of the article is poignant:

At mid-afternoon on Derby Day, a good friend of Brette's from Ireland strolled up to the barn to greet the horse and rider.

"She gazed into his eyes for a while," Brette said. "Then she turned to me and said: 'He's an old soul. He's been here before.'"

Update 339: Barbaro had another comfortable day (saturday). Had dinner with Peter and Kim. Other interesting factoids:

Messenger was a racehorse, I think trained by Michael, but not very fast. I think he may have had a stakes winning sibling.

Bobby, Barbaro's nickname, is such because Nicholas, Peter and Kim's son, could not say "Barbaro" ... he is quite young.

I also wanted to note that a couple of people have noted sons and daughters of Dynamformer as half bothers / sisters to Bobby. We do not actually consider a thoroughbred a sibling (or half sibling) unless they are out of the same dam. Thus Bobby's siblings are Holy Ground (four year old half brother) Man of Havana (two year old half brother), and his weanling full brother, yet unnamed.

    Comments

Thanks for the clarification on siblings Alex.

    CHRIS BYERS,

    Good night! I like you!!

LYN--I don't know about Whirlaway or Sham, but I think Riva Ridge retired to stud at Claiborne Farms and lived out his days there. I read recently that Penny Tweedy actually liked him better than her Big Red--in terms of his affectionate personality.

DEB G.--thanks for the answer about Beyer speed. Would it be accurate, then, to say that Bobby's score is higher than Bernadini's based in part on Bobby's fast wins on turf and mud, as well as dry dirt tracks?

It was the first Press conference about the space aliens. The reporter asked him if it was a bad step, and he said yes, that there was no reason to believe that it was anything else. Then after that he said that he ruled out space aliens.

Alex, thank you. Sounds like dinner was interesing. Loved finding out how "Bobby" originated.

Messenger, we love you, sweetie. It's ok you weren't fast.. you are Barbaro's great companion.

Barbaro, thinking of you this evening and every evening. So glad your Saturday was comfortable. Keep cool and stay near those fans. We love you and you are in our hearts, special boy!!

Hey would be nice if the Jacksons had a contest or something to name the little brother of bobby's.

I still like New Bolton for a name or Dr R!!

    Thanks for the updates!!

Posted by: Mary L Ohio at July 30, 2006 2:15 AM

Please bare(sp) with me - I'm watching the Nascar Busch race and Dale Sr came to mind while reading the posts - not to be mean and uncaring but when Dale Sr will killed in a race - it was just racing - I always thought what goes around comes around. He was quie an ahole on he track.

I would never want anything like that to happen to Bernardini - he is an innocent - Dale Sr knew what he was doing. So I'm not sure of my point - except - that horses are innocents - race car drivers are not. So please pray that Bernardini does well in his future. and please forgive me for being an ass.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 30, 2006 2:15 AM

Thanks for the update, Mr. Brown!!

And thanks for the tidbits. I'm so glad Barbaro got to have dinner with Peter and Kim--or maybe that was Alex doing the dining. In any event, Big Horse had a ACD and that's what counts!!

I love the part about how Barbaro got his nickname. I do wonder, however--do Peter and Kim Brette mind that the General Public has adopted that name? Sounds like it was a family thing.

Posted by: Susan E. at July 30, 2006 2:15 AM

Susan E: Yes, it would be accurate to say that. Heck, we KNOW Barbaro is better than Bernadini....Barbaro is unbeaten....

Beyer speeds on an excellent stakes horse goes to the 120's......which has been done....however, it goes by track condition, and other factors.....a calculation....

Posted by: Deb G. at July 30, 2006 2:15 AM

If anyone is posting that had/has a race horse that had panic attacks, can you email me?

One of the horses I own seems to have panic attacks when she gets to the track on racing days. Her timed works are great, she's in top tip shape however, she doesn't like race days.

She lost her first 2 races and our trainer gave her a 2 month break to make her forget her past experience, came back for a 3rd race and kicked butt. She won by 4-1/2 lengths. Now she's hip to race days again and is panicing.

    Any thoughts?

I think Dr Dean is a great name after New Bolton

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 30, 2006 2:17 AM

Are you kidding me? Loretta: STOP. Chris B was obviously venting for what she felt she should and she has not done that again! What makes you bring this up (as always) - you are a trouble maker! I could see all along that your religous chants are you actually hiding behind a sheet of negativity which is imposed on others.

STOP!!!! We ONLY started posting here about the Rea's as we feel there was a misinterpretation and did not want others on this board to feel someone posted negative directly to her. It was not about you - only stating your post might have made her feel that way....as you are doing now - with others...

    STOP!

Posted by: Deb G. at July 30, 2006 2:18 AM

Good Saturday Night precious Barbaro. You are doing great big boy - please keep fighting. I know some days are better than others but you know just how to handle them. Love you !!

I was without my computer for three days, but I had access to USA Today (hotel). Every day I'd go to the sports page. I was thrilled when there was no mention of Barbaro. So far, so good. A long way to go, but this horse's force of personality, his attitude, his optimism (or whatever you'd call it in horse terms -- I do believe that most horses are optimistic) validates the Jackson's, Matz's, NBC's, and Dr. Richardsons's belief that it's not over until it's over, and we're a long way from there.

This horse has stamina. I believe in my heart and soul that he will make it.

    Bobby, keep the faith, baby!

I KNOW IT WAS PROBABLY AN ACCIDENT WITH BROTHER DEREK, BUT HE SHATTERED MY HEART IN MORE PIECES THAN BARBARO'S LEG. :>(

BROTHER DEREK AND BARBARO WERE BACK AND FORTH DERBY MORNING WITH THE WAGERS(ONE AND TWO) WHICH MAKES ME WONDER, YA CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER. MANY OF YOU MAY NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE WAGERS, BUT BROTHER DEREK WAS THE FAVORITE UNTIL SATURDAY MONRING/AFTERNOON WHEN BARBARO BECAME THE FAVORITE.

I DON'T WANT TO UPSET ANYONE OR CAUSE ANY NEGATIVE ENERGY. I KNOW THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO NOW, I CAN FORGIVE BROTHER DEREK I SUPPOSE.

GOD, PLEASE WATCH OVER OUR BOBBY, TAKE ALL HIS PAIN AND INFECTIONS AWAY. IF LOVE COULD HEAL, HE WOULD DEFINITELY BE ALL BETTER BY NOW.

I still think The Green Monkey is the best on-Barbaro racehorse name I've heard in a long time, except for Sinister Minister, which always makes me think of Snidely Whiplash. Did you know that during the Derby, Sinister M. was so busy twirling his mustache and gloating that he never even saw Bobby come up on the outside?

I dont think Alex Solis (on Derek) lied or tried to deny anything. I think he really felt that his horse didn't touch Barbaro. To be honest, I don't think so either. I don't think Derek was near enough to Barbaro when he took the first mistep. But anyway why does it make a difference now? All this is going to do is harbor bad feelings.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri at July 30, 2006 2:30 AM

Deb G: I did not say that you said that I posted against her. Clearly that is impossible, since I was the one with the favorable post. But for you to even imply that I had a post that said that people were to post only about Barbaro -- is incorrect. THAT is what you have distorted. Please try to read posts correctly. I have NEVER even so much as intimated that people should only post about Barbaro.

And if I defend my position, which I have a right to do, JUST AS YOU YOURSELF DID WHEN A POSTER MALIGNED YOU, it is because something I posted was mis-quoted, mis-stated, etc. When something ERRONEOUS is not CORRECTED, the erroneous thing gets PERPETUATED. IS THAT NOT WHAT YOU WERE DOING IN TRYING TO CORRECT THE MIKE REA SIUTATION THIS EVENING? Why did YOU DEFEND YOURSELF a few days back when you were being maligned??

I find it interesting that those of you who will not allow me to defend MY position against unwarranted, unfounded, and downright rude attacks, readily DEFEND YOURSELVES against the same!

And BTW, Debra G, isn't it also interesting that
after I re-posted my "favorable" comment to Mike's sister today, you felt you needed to make a POINT of INCORRECTLY attributing to me the post about posting only about Barbaro, which I have never done. But YOU MADE NO EFFORT in your resolution post to ATTRIBUTE TO ME the FAVORABLE post. Hmmm...I wonder why.

For unknown reasons, you do not like me, even though I have supported you in the past, so you take EVERY opportunity to call me out for your own purposes, but have no interest in GIVING CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.

Don't tell people to "let it go", just because you are unwilling to stand corrected when
    you have erroneously maligned someone.

    deb in WI..

has your trainer tried just taking the horse on race day and not racing her? let her see the activities going on, walk her around , give her treats.. Maybe she needs more time around the track when it is busier and noiser..

My uncle use to do this for horses he had and was groom with. they would take those panic horses and stable them at the track for a couple of weeks, no racing but letting them experience all the noise and happenings, walking them around, etc. I wish he was still alive, he sure would have some good advice

a couple of board rules seem necessary, and this is not targeted at anyone, but I think if we follow these basic rules, dialog may return to singularly focusing on Bobby, his recovery and all the good Bobby can do (and learning about horses / racing) ... so not so singular, but there we go!

    a. please try not to offend

    b. please do not be offended (ignore / no response is better than responding to being offended)

    c. please don't write about bickering, it can only make things a little more tense.

    HI MARY L,

Thanks for the comment. And, yes, I guess the next step is to take her to the track and do exactly what you suggested.

I'm hoping this makes a difference. Sometimes trainers have soooooo many horses to train that the trainer doesn't have the time to give the horese some undivided attention however, we have a wonderful trainer. One of the best in Kentucky. I hope our horse can overcome this. If not, they're suggesting to put her in a broodmare sale at Keenland. I may just buy her myself:-)

    Thanks again Mary.

Deb G. - remember, a one sided fight is over quickly.

As the troll website says -
The only way to deal with trolls is to limit your reaction to reminding others not to respond to trolls.

Alex and Tim deserve better than this site has been giving them.

Alex - thank you again for keeping us updated on Barbaro. Hope you had a great relaxing dinner with the Brette's.

Sweet Barbaro - ACD!!! One day at a time - and how about sleeping in tomorrow???

thanks you guys. I just got sick of our resident troll and wanted to go have a looksee. Does our resident fit the description and all...

And thanks for saying you like Michael's Miracle. But I can't really take the whole credit, because it was Michael that said "that all it would take was one miracle". And then those are his initials. I love M&M's so there's another good reason. Finally I just think it would be a great name for Bobby's baby brother. But I'm not sure that the Jackson's are gonna go for it.

Still I respect everyone else who goes with the mantra Believe in Miracles Believe in Barbaro.

what about Dynadean? Don't answer that! I really like Dynarouge! I wonder how many retired race horses, of course geldings or mares, could be retrained to work at the race track or training facilities to pony horses? I hope alot of them are used for this, keeps them out of the slaughter houses.

TO ALL: One of the articles that Alex posted re Barbaro was from the Washington Post. The "comment" section on that site had the following statement, which I, for one, would like to see implemented here. In that way, people would be able to post their comments about Barbaro, or whatever related subject is being discussed, without fear of being the victim of personal attacks or vulgar, rude language.

    Washington Post site:

"Comments that include profanity or personal attacks or other inappropriate comments or material will be removed from the site. Additionally, entries that are unsigned or contain "signatures" by someone other than the actual author will be removed. Finally, we will take steps to block users who violate any of our posting standards, terms of use or privacy policies or any other policies governing this site. Please review the full rules governing commentaries and discussions. You are fully responsible for the content that you post."

If people on this message board, which is not THEIR message board, cannot discipline themselves to use proper etiquette, then a policy such as the aforementioned one, will do the job for them.

    LYN:

Yeah, I'm back. After your post earlier tonight I kept wondering about Sham and Whirlaway. I remember watching Sham race; if it hadn't been Secretariat's year I would have rooted for Sham. Anyway, here's a little info on the two horses. The Sham stuff, I trust; Whirlaway...it could happen; he would've been 15 or 16 at the time, I think.

"In 1973, SHAM, out of PRETENSE (sire) and SEQUOIA (mare) and a direct
male line descendant of the great ECLIPSE, ran second to winner
Secretariat in the Kentucky Derby in spite of knocking out two front
teeth on the starting gate and bleeding profusely the entire length of
the 1 3/16th mile race. Although he didn’t win, he set the record for
the second fastest Derby run ever (behind Secretariat, of course). The
horse’s finishing record was 13 Starts, 5 Wins, 5 Places, 1 Show and
Career Earnings of $204,808. He was retired to stud at Spendthrift
Farm alongside his own sire, Pretense and died in 1993 at the age of
    23. Sham was buried on Walmac International Farm in Lexington, KY.

    Owner: Sigmund Sommer
Breeder: A.B. Hancock, Jr.'s Claiborne Farm
    Trainer: Pancho Martin"

"Whirlaway enjoyed some initial success at stud, but was never the first-choice stallion at Calumet, that honor falling to Bull Lea. Sold to French breeding interests, Whirlaway died in the southern Normandy region of France on April 6, 1953, just ten minutes after being bred to a mare."

Poor Mary L. I enjoy all your posts and after seeing all the posts of today, I seen you had to copy and paste Alex's rules. As if you don't have enough to deal with. Also, your video Never give in left tears in my eyes...the song was just like what Bobby would say to all of us who love him.

On a lighter side, I see alot of posts about Bobby home for Christmas. That would be so great but do you really feel that is going to happen? Knowing our boy and all the attention he is receiving at NBC, I think he would rather wait until the following week so he can go home to party New Year's Eve....well deserve party!

Did anyone see the pics Alex posted yesterday "Barbaro going to the Preakness"? I downloaded him with his neighbor for my wallpaper. That picture is adorable, shows just how full of life our boy is.

My first comment after weeks of lurking...you guys amaze me...but I amaze myself more. :-)

I've never been near a horse in my life. Truth be told, I'm pretty frightened by them. I have several family members and friends who have been "horse folks", and all of them have been seriously injured at one time or another. However, while I've never felt comfortable being near one, I've always thought horses were the most breathtakingly beautiful animals..."out thar in yonder pasture". :-)

Two years ago, I had a vocal coach who also did equine-assisted therapy with handicapped children. We talked a lot about horses, and she keyed me into this whole beautiful, spiritual, intuitive quality they possess. Ah, I see horses in a new light...still spooked, but curious, intrigued, and definitely respectful.

More than that, I've never watched racing. Why? Because I always feared I'd see one of these big, spooky, magnificent creatures go down. Tears come just imagining it.

So...here I am. My first knowledge of Barbaro, even of the fact that there had been a race, was the day after, when I picked up the morning paper and absently thumbed to the sports section to check the baseball scores. I saw the pictures...and my heart broke...and I was hooked. For weeks, I googled Barbaro several times a day, then one day I found a link to this site. I'll say it again, you folks are amazing.

Rambling on...I have an 8-year old border collie mix who, coincidentally enough, began having problems with his hind foot this spring - hay fever, chewing on the feet, sore, icky stuff. Went to the vet, got some meds, and the foot started getting better...then one day, he got stung by a bee on his "good" foot - he practically chewed one pad off before I could get out of the house and to him. So, I had a dog with two sore hind feet. I started calling him "Wilbur-O". :-)

My husband comes home from work every day and first asks, "How are you?", then "How's the dog"...then "How's the horse?"

Every morning, I meditate for 20-60 minutes, and part of that meditation is sending healing energy to Barbaro and blessings to everyone involved in keeping us informed. It's a long road, but with all the love and energy being poured in his direction, I can't help but believe he will pull through.

And when he does...I'm going to take a deep breath, gather all my courage, take a step "out thar in yonder pasture"...and take riding lessons.

Great news about (((Bobby)))...I had hard time saying Barbaro when I first heard it. I've also heard it misprounced by television annoucers as well.

Interesting take on the "siblings" issue for thoroughbreds. I would say a geneticist may disagree but who am I to say...;)

Did someone on this site put that site together? I am wondering because it fits one of the posters on here to a tee and I think we all know who LOL

Sorry Alex, I will stay within the rules.

Just closing out tonight and finalizing the day with one more review of this site. Alex's posts are so welcome -- when I read an article in the newspaper I usually have already read the information from this wonderful site. Just can't get enough information about this BEAUTIFUL COURAGEOUS BARBARO.

I did wonder where "Bobby" came from. It's a wonderful story and makes so much sense. Thank you, Alex, for sharing it.

I don't post here much, but enjoy scanning the comments - although I must admit that the bulk of my reading is purely on the updates.

My heart goes out, as it has each day since the Preakness, to all of Barbaro's family and friends - I cannot imagine what they are going through each day as they try to go about their daily work yet always with wonderful Barbaro on their minds.

Rest well tonight sweet Barbaro, rest and recuperate and keep focused on healing. The world is praying for you to recover - I think a recent article said that Barbaro represents that courage and strength that each of us hope we would show when faced with adversity. Barbaro has definitely proven how classy he is. I certainly hope to read you had another comfortable night when I read tomorrow's updates.

Thank you so much, Alex (and all the others who provide information to this site) for the fantastic information that you do provide. You all have many other things to do, and it is so kind of you to keep us informed.

Thanks all .... good night .... pleasant dreams ... positive thoughts ... and heal wonderful Barbaro.

I think Alex has to see the troll website.

One technique used by trolls to generate chaos is to pretend to be a well-liked person. On some systems there is nothing to prevent somebody from signing your name to a distasteful message.

Scarey now anyone can post anything under a posters name.

After I went into the troll website and read what they do,,,it kinda scared me being there is one person who seems to instill alot of chaos (not posting now). That poster singled people out and that scares me cause I don't know posters names except when they post to me. I hate the thought of someone being so mean but one never knows.

Good evening Bobby, Glad you had a good day!

Someone asked about what happens to retired race horses down the line. WEll I had a retired gelding, name of Phone Addict, he won a few races, can't remember now how many, but he came to me via my son-in-law and I rode him working cows on a ranch! He was awsome, quiet and patient with the critters! I also rode dressage on him and did long distance competitive 100 mile rides on him. He was 16H2 Dark Bay, and always a gentleman. One of the best mounts in my 67years! We all called him Mr.ED. Don't know how he came to that, but that was what he was know by.

I know the time and patient that it will take, and the devotion of the staff that will be spent taking care of Bobby,But I feel in my heart that these good folk are all true horsemen, through and through! We all can rest easy with Bobby in their hands.

    Sleep well, Big Boy!
I send prayers for your healing.

I understand we will not get any new pics of Bobby. According to Dr. Dean he has lost muscle conditioning because of being hospitalized.
I agree with his decision because we will be alarmed when there is no need to be.
This is evident in the one phone at UPenn of him in the sling, I clicked on that last night from a post on here and it came up large. Was hard for me to see being his bridle was very loose around his nose.
If you want to see some adorable pics of Bobby, look at yesterday or the day before updates with a link to Barbaro arrives at the Preakness. I downloaded one for my wallpaper, him making friends with his neighbor,,,so adorable.
    Hope that helps.

Posted by: margaret from sc at July 30, 2006 6:32 AM

    Margaret,
I am unaware of anything Dr. Dean has said, but as a professional photographer, I believe the over-arching concern is that photos by amateur photographers = unintended "flash" pictures. You will notice that you have never seen a flash pop revealed in the Penn ICU videos, and I believe Sabrina is shooting without a flash mounted on her SLR. I do not see any flash in the stall pictures. I see too much flourescent, for my taste, but anyway, they appear taken in the day. If there was a flash, you would see the little reflected highlight of the flash in Bobby's eye and Dr's glasses. ------The flash could startle Bobby and have bad consequences.
None of this is not to say, that Dr. Dean would like to respect the privacy of his patient, until he has healed enough to beign physio therapy. ------------
p.s. I do remember an amateur shooter, who was part of the medical team (in scrubs) that apparantly was taking a picture of Bobby coming out of the pool, but remember Bobby's eyes are covered with a green gown. -----
I think Sabrina is the person to ask about this issue.

Barbaro, continue with sweet restful dreams and a healthy appetite with plenty of those hugs, nuzzles, and kisses. Remember, if we could wrap our loving arms around you they'd be doing it 24/7 along with tons of horsey whispers to keep your spirits as bright as you are...
Got get some rest myself you know...recovery from jaw fractures is no picnic...

Before resting, want to give hope to L in Ohio who has a dog with two bad legs. Two weeks ago we our springer jumped off a retaining rock wall and accidently injured his front foreleg. After checking him thoroughly, I applied a wrap & ice.
I also gave him some of Springtime's Fresh Factors which we were low on & doggie aspirin.
Early next morning, I ordered Springtime's new Longevity formula (combines Fresh Factors, Joint Health, Spirulina, & Bee Pollen, etc.). Arrived within 3 days--started him on a double dose twice daily schedule. Within 3 days he was barely limping and by day 7 on Longevity he was running & springing like a puppy again (pretty good for a 7 year-old guy).

This stuff really works and he absolutely LOVES it mixed in his wet/dry food. He dances in circles& barks for breakfast. We're longtime Springtime customers and this new Longevity is incredible!!! He's never recovered this quickly from a severe sprain like this before!

Dennis Hampt, founded Springtime 30 years ago because he was passionately determined to save his BUDDHA best dogfriend who was a puppy back then recovering poorly from a devasting leg fracture like Barbaro's. He never gave up and vowed to find the very best ingredients through experimentation to help BUDDHA heal. And, heal he did living an extra 12 years.

So, Thursday evening, I thanked him for continually improving his formula line for horses and dogs. Even took a photo & sent him it. We also asked hid company to contribute a very special BARBARO & FRIENDS basket of Springtime Horse formulas specific to Barbaro's special nutritional support needs. Pray he does...

Told him if Buddha were looking into his eyes he'd say (dogtalking), "Daddy Hampt, you've got to help Barbaro just like you did me." My dog was asking him too along with other folks.

It looks favorable...spoke again to Jennifier who will immediately forward the request to Anna, Executive for Public Relations.

L, before you go out yonder to take riding lessons -- relax, and go to www.springtimeinc.com and call 1(800)521-3212 Monday - Friday 8:00 - 6:00 EST. They've sold over 50 million products.
With repeat customers & word of mouth, Springtime is doing something RIGHT!!!

Their formulas are SO GOOD medical professionals use them for their horses and dogs & patients' animals -- all athletic sporting horses & dogs!!!

Hope this news update helps you L, and others who need it.

Good healing to Mike Rea, and strength to his family - keep telling those jokes...

Happy that Edgar had his share of wins yesterday.

So sorry about Michael's horses, but we'll keep the faith. It has to be hard with the preoccupations.

Just sitting here watching yesterday's racing and it really upsets me to see some jockey's whipping horses that are obviously completely exhausted and have no running left in them, or are blocked by other horses and wouldn't be able to get through safely if they could speed up!

Are there any whipping rules or guidelines that should be followed? I thought there were and if there are it seems that some jockeys are abusing those rules.

Maybe I'm wrong and it looks worse than it is, but it certainly looks like these horses get quite a few hard cracks of the whip, and it does nothing but distress them.

    Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

Barbaro - wake up sleepyhead! Its another new day.

ACN is all I need to see. Cats are fed, have read morning e-mail, checked this site - yep, all is well in my world. Also lit lots of candles last night.

Caught up on last night's posts (kids came over and made excellent birthday sushi for me...they are the best and I am looking forward to their wedding on 8/19). So happy to see such positive energy here.

Debra in WI, with your permission, would it be OK to send some healing energy to your horse? Just to join in whatever you do to help get over the panic attacks. Will need the name...

Sweet Bobby J, you are in my thoughts morning and night. Hope you enjoyed my organic carrots when I delivered breakfast to NBC...

I stopped to pick up some organic carrots on Friday for Stormy and Windy. The people in the health food store said 'Organic carrots for horses? Wow...that is so cool!" I mentioned this site and how Barbaro is getting such wonderful support (and carrots...). It seems when I mention Barbaro, people around me want to know how he's doing. I'm thrilled to be able to provide timely and ACCURATE information. Tim, Alex, NBC, Dr. R - thank you so much for everything you are doing - and thanks to KF for supplying all the goodies to NBC and Sweet Bobby J.

And thank all of you for this wonderful support. To those who are battling illness or who have family (both animal and human family), my prayers are with you.

Mike Rea, hope you have another good day. Stay strong. Prayers to you and your family.

And last, but certainly not least....to our Sweet Barbaro...its going to be another hot day in Chester County - stay cool, stay on your course, keep growing that hoof and fusing that fracture...

    Hello and good morning Barbaromaniacs

Lyn - I love the term "team Barbaro" I think that's a great description.

Just checking in for Bobby's update.

I know some of you saw the Jim Dandy yesterday as I did. I must say - Bernardini's win was quite impressive. Did anyone hear Randy Moss's comment about Bernardini looking better than Barbaro did when he won the derby? I don't think that opinion would be very popular on this board where "Barbaro Rules".

Well - I'll check in later. I have family visiting for a week, so I won't be able to spend time here as I would like. But of course, I can't get through the day without checking for Bobby's condition.

    Janice

PS - I wish I had time to go back and read the posts I missed. I saw the name "Whirlaway" somewhere. Besides Seabiscuit, Whirly is one of my all time favorites. The horses today race a few times and then retire. Seabiscuit, Whirlaway and many others of previous eras raced incredible amounts of races.

Thank you for the two reports, Alex...they really tug at the heart-strings, especially Michael's words "Right now, I'm more worried about saving his life instead of whether he's 3-year-old champion," He really has got his priorities right, and it shows just how much he loves Barbaro.

And this..."She gazed into his eyes for a while," Brette said. "Then she turned to me and said: 'He's an old soul. He's been here before.'"
    ...gives me goosebumps.

Here's hoping for another good day.

Good Morning, Alex and Friends of Barbaro.

Alex, you started our day on a fine gentle note with the two articles. Hope this sets the pace for the day.

"She gazed into his eyes for a while," Brette said. "Then she turned to me and said: 'He's an old soul. He's been here before.'" That's you, Special One. You're the old soul, Beautiful, who is here for a reason and we're part of your magic. Not to worry about Bernandini. You're three yaer old of our hearts and that beats any other recognition. Make the best of the new day full of promise. You're with us whereever we go and whatever we do. We keep love and hope in our hearts for you.

Everyone have a good Sunday. Keep up the magic by Honoring Barbaro and by honoring each other.

A Name for Barbaro's little brother: I like the name BARBARO's LITTLE BROTHER, because he will have Bobby's name and people will look at him and see they better watch out,he has the same genes going through him- a true warrior. It has a nice ring, IMO

    Good Morning Bobby,

I am so glad to hear you had another comfortable day yesterday. I bet you enjoyed your bath time, with the heat and humidity. Even though you have A/C, it's still nice for a boy to get all scrubbed up and watered down- makes you feel refreshed and ready to take on another day! I hope you had sweet dreams and start your day today with a nice healthy breakfast and take it easy. I'll come back later to check on you little friend. Remember, I BELIEVE IN YOU-ALWAYS BARBARO! Sending you hugs and kisses from all here in Connecticut!

MARGARET FROM SC - I agree with your earlier post. I, too, thought this was a site for info (THANKS, ALEX!) and good wishes for Barbaro, but there seem to be many agendas here that I don't relate to...because my ONLY agenda is prayers, good wishes, positive energy for BARBARO. I've asked for emails that haven't been answered - I get the sense of cliques here and don't mind not being part of the "in crowd."
My fondest wish is that everyone who loves Barbaro sends daily reinforcement his way - whether it be prayer, meditation, lighting candles - whatever's comfortable for each person. I'm not here to convert anybody to my way of supporting Barbaro, and I'm also not here to make accusations about the breakdown, nor am I here to demean Bernardini - I thought his Jim Dandy was quite impressive (although you know I was cheering for Edgar - glad he placed!).
"The road is long, with many a winding turn..."
I look forward with hopefulness (tempered with reminders of reality) to the wonderful day when Barbaro goes home, and pray for each day to be just one hoofprint closer to the goal!

hey guys, not to worry. Barbaro isn't wearing a bridle, he's wearing a halter- which is always loose around the muzzle.

Losing muscle tone doesn't necessarily mean wasting into a skeletal state- Bobby was lean to begin with- and any athlete that's not only out of training, but on 'bed rest' is going to lose a lot of muscle tone.

Does anyone know of a website or link to a place on the internet where there is a photo of Barbaro when he was very young? No matter what search terms I use, I come up with nothing!

Bobby continues to be so brave and goodhearted through this struggle. I believe that he and the doctors caring for him will change the treatment of horses for all time. What owner would put down one of these magnificent creatures as quickly as they might have before Barbaro's daily triumphs?

I hope Bobby gets to visit with other horses, occasionally. Does anyone know if he does?

Hang in there, Bobby! You're standing on the shoulders of thousands of supporters all over the world who pray for you every day.

Good morning Barbaromaniacs! I really enjoyed the two articles Alex posted. Especially the one from the TimesUnion with Michael Matz. It was also wonderful to hear Alex was able to have dinner with the Brettes and talk about Barbaro stuff. How I would have loved to hear all they discussed. I do have a question about the Florida Derby that Alex mentioned. After watching that race again it almost looks like Barbaro trips or runs into Sharp Humor down the stretch, then recovers, excells, and wins. Did I see that right? Just wondering. After all, our boy became a man that day.

Yes, the care that Barbaro is getting is wonderful and the Jackson's have done everything to ensure he gets that care. They are wonderful people.

Unfortunately, the sad truth is that most owners don't have the resources to take the same measures. I have horse and I LOVE my horses but, God forbid, something like that were to happen I wouldn't be able to do the same for them.
And, I'm not alone. Most horse owners are in the same position as me.

Bobby's triumphs can't change that fact. It is sad but true.

A comment that I read in this morning's NY Times from the trainer of Bernardini is how the press, newspapers and others should react. He said, I'm paraphrasing, that he didn't want Bernardini to replace Barbaro but should be a continuation of championship caliber.

Alex, thanks for this morning's updates. Thanks to you and everyone else connected with this site, it has provided me with a glimpse into a another world.

    Alex,

Thanks for the scoop. How Peter loves this horse. I recall the interview where he says "For 30 minutes a day, he's my horse." Barbaro's connections are truly wonderful people.

I enjoyed re-reading the article about Peter and Barbaro's "old soul". I remember two months ago, we had some speculation on this board as to which old soul he was--Nureyev? Man O' War? Maybe his "old soul" wasn't even a horse. Dr. Albert Schweitzer, the great humanitarian and champion of animals, perhaps?

In any event, Bobby is teaching a lot of important things to a lot of people.

Looking forward to an update about ACN! Thanks for everything.

    Hello again, Barbaromaniacs!

Loved the Times Union article - thank you to Mr. Wilkins for all the kind things he said, thanks also to everybody for the link and to Alex for publishing it. It brought tears to my eyes. Gives some insight into what Michael Matz has been through - he's had such an intense life here, hasn't he? I can imagine the cards and letters are still coming in. His strength amazes me.

Mike Rea and family, you were in morning prayers. Keep healing...we're all with you.

Alex, is there any way I could visit Fair Hill just for a couple of hours? Just to take a look around? I'm learning so much about horses - don't want to get in the way, but I'd love to see...I have time between now and Sept. 17th (scheduled to leave for Spain/UK for 3 months). Let me know who I'd need to speak with.

In my work with my other two favorite horses, I look into their eyes and see such timelessness - I pray for the day when I can look into our Sweet Bobby J's eyes just to start to "read" his story - all I would need is 5 minutes...that's why I keep jokingly trying to figure out how to bribe Dr. R (food, ladies...with food) for 5 minutes with our boy. I can be patient, though. I know the time will come. When they see into you, there's no feeling like it in the world...I've found that feeling with Stormy and Windy and some of the other horses at the ranch that come to me. There is this stillness around them and then they just look at you. Wow.

Horse's eyes can see into you and their gentleness and nobility are so intense...and so beautiful.

Take care, Team Barbaro (and yes, we ARE a team in the truest sense. How beautiful is that...). Stay cool in this heat...its still a scorcher here in Chester County.

Sweet B, hope you have a lovely day...

    Healing to all,

Sad to hear of the injuries at Arlington. Did I read correctly that Three Hour Nap, the one injured more seriously, had broken bones in the same leg TWO times before?! I pray both horses will recover.

Glad to hear Peter will visit Barbaro again today.

    Bobby as a baby....

I can't watch this video because just hearing the song makes me cry, but at the beginning you can see our Barbaro as a baby.

    Jo-

I know what you mean about the song, but how I love to watch that video over and over again. I actually have been singing the "Run for the Roses" song around the house the last two days. I can't get it out of my head. But then again, I can't get Bobby off my mind.

LYN GILBERT: Thank you so much for your lovely posts to me. I try to thank everyone as soon as I see their posts, but these two I either missed, or perhaps I had already left the board. But I always try to catch up. So wanted to acknowledge them. I'll just use excerpts, so you'll know what I'm referring to:

"Loretta, I find your posts enlightening. I, too, lost my boyfriend back in 1997 - suddenly. ... You are a survivor and I'm learning from you. Thank you."

"Loretta, you are on target. Keep up with your eloquent posts re healing. You astound me."

JEANETTE C.: I also missed one of yours, of which I'm equally appreciative. Thank you so much!

"Hi, Loretta:>) I really enjoy reading your posts. They are a great inspiration to me. I look forward to reading everything you post."

Again, Lyn and Jeanette, Thank you for your support, and for appreciating what I've tried to share here, for any who might be interested. For those who are not interested, they are free to follow their own "lights" as they see fit. As always, my primary intentions on this board are to express my positive, healing thoughts for Barbaro.

Some have not understood that, however, and have taken to posting less than favorable comments to me. So, at times, it has become necessary for me to clarify my statements and/or correct misapprehensions. But that is ok; it is akin to removing a pebble from one's shoe, so that one can continue on one's path.

For those who are inspired, I say:

Am glad to have been reminded of Bobby's old soul - There are many pictures where he looks at the camera and it shines through - I think its part of the reason he has touched so many - He is wise and noble, a survivor and a fighter with charisma and you can see it all in his eyes...

I can't remember where they said it will be from. Is it Arlington or Del Mar? Does any one know. I know the West Virginia Derby is next Sunday but I don't think that was it.

    Deb G.,

The injured horses were Three Hour Nap and Catnour. It doesn't sound like the injury to Three Hour Nap fits the pattern of the earlier ones (and it sounds like maybe he shouldn't have been racing -- he had suffered breaks in the same cannon bones previously, he was acting up pre-race -- seems like he knew something was wrong).

Welcome. Your post was fine. We always look for links that have to do with our boy.
No policies to worry about except to respect each other.

We're all here to follow Barbaro's progress and send prayers his way.
Also, we discuss horse racing related issues and are hoping to help make some changes. Check out our petition for safer tracks www.petitiononline.com/cares/petition.html

Many of us are also involved in helping to get HR503 passed which is the bill against horse slaughter for human consumption.

So welcome aboard and keep posting

Thank you for the warm welcome. CL, I've saved the info about the supplements. Wilbur-O's problems weren't joint related - he had an allergic reaction to something in the yard, and his feet were irritated...then, just as he was healing, he got stung by a bee on his "good" foot. All is healed now, he is off the meds, the offending plant matter must have died off, and he is fine. It's amazing how quickly a dog's pads heal and regrow - if only hooves could heal as quickly. I'll save the supplement info, though. I have given him MSM and chondroitin for years, and it must work because most people think he is about 2 - not almost 9!

I'm so glad to read another positive update on Barbaro. Prayers and healing energy for him and all involved in his care are continuing. Now I'm off to a yoga workshop. So glad to have read this before I had to leave! YAY!

Posted by: Debbie at July 30, 2006 3:28 PM

    Alex--

Thanks so much for the updates, as always...and thank you especially for the re-mention of Peter Brette's Irish friend and her looking into Barbaro's eyes before the Derby and seeing an old soul. I first read this in a NY Times article AT at the end of May and have been so aware of that old soul in every picture I've seen of Barbaro since. That's why I've previously posted that 'Barbaro knows'...and it is the rest of us that are just now catching up.

I'm including a piece I wrote on Barbaro back in June, inspired by Peter's friend's comment and also by the parallels between Seabiscuit and Barbaro that have struck me from the very start (noted in my earliest posts to this site).

    The piece follows.

    Nancy in CA

    Seeing Seabiscuit

Sometimes life snatches us from our intended course and sets us on another so far from what we had envisioned that we never could have imagined it before the snatching. It happened to Barbaro and consequently, it happened to me.

When his right hind leg broke and shattered at the start of the Preakness. Edgar Prado, Barbaro's jockey, heard the leg break and began pulling Barbaro up within an instant, and in that instant became Barbaro’s life saver. I heard my heart break, echoed by the breaking of millions of others--every heart that was there that day, except for one--the one of Barbaro himself.

Heart is the essence of Barbaro. Even in excruciating pain and seeming defeat, Barbaro was nothing but heart. He was calm despite the anything-but-calm scene swirling around him, his leg grotesquely twisted and dangling. He was cooperative. He obeyed his handlers. His head was high and he was alert as he watched the other horses, the ones he would have been beating had cruel fate not intervened, race by him. He was the quintessential champion, even if he had been sidelined.

And now, although forever sidelined from actual racing again, he remains the champion while running the longest race of his life for his life. Metal plates and screws have been placed and replaced in his shattered leg. He has developed a potentially life threatening condition in the other hind foot. Nonetheless, Barbaro continues to accept his fate, while fighting against all odds, with the dignity and class of the true champion that he is.

The outpouring of compassion for this horse, comparatively little known outside of racing circles until the fateful Preakness afternoon, continues to astound. Message boards have cropped up all over the internet, and continue to process hundreds and thousands of well wishers' messages that are still pouring in at a speed rivaling Barbaro's own when he won the Kentucky Derby.

Posters to the message boards run the gamut in age and background and are from countries all over the world. Some are horse owners and some are in the racing business themselves. Most are not. Most are ordinary people who have never owned or even been touched a horse, but who are so struck by what happened to Barbaro and the aftermath that they haven’t been able to resume the normalcy of their lives since. Something much bigger is going on here.

A 49 year-old man started his message with, "I can’t believe I’m writing to a horse…" and then went on, losing any self-consciousness he might have had, addressing 'the horse' as if he were a close friend of the human sort. And this keeps happening.

The mother of a little boy, about to undergo his own surgery and recovery period, wrote to say that Barbaro has become her son's role model as he prepares for what lies ahead.

Another man, recovering from a stroke, wrote to say that Barbaro has provided him the encouragement and motivation he needed to begin to walk again.

Early on, two US soldiers arrived at the New Bolton Center, Barbaro’s intensive care home, with a flag that had been flown in Iraq. The flag had then been sent back to the U.S. expressly for the purpose being presented to Barbaro, the wounded warrior.

Other people include their animals in the sending of well wishes to Barbaro. They see the commonality in all human-animal relationships and can relate to Barbaro and his human family through their own.

Barbaro has raised people’s consciousnesses and become the rallying point, as well as the poster boy, for saving wild horses from slaughter, saving injured and worn out horses off the track, inspiring tracks to install artificial surfaces to increase safety, triggering gifts to veterinary centers and horse rescue organizations. He would never have done this as ‘just’ the first Triple Crown winner in nearly 30 years.

Many, including Gretchen and Roy Jackson, Barbaro’s guardians, have wondered why so many have been so drawn into Barbaro’s quest for survival.

So many facets to this story, but the one that draws me back again and again is the parallel to Seabiscuit’s, now familiar to present-day generations, thanks to Laura Hillenbrand’s book and the subsequent movie.

At the time of Seabiscuit, just as now in Barbaro's time, the country was reeling from large scale disasters. Then it was The Great Depression. Now it is another great depression, not of the economic kind, but of the kind that robs a nation of hope and fills it instead with fear, frustration, and despair with no foreseeable way out.

Just as Seabiscuit did for the people of his time, Barbaro has lifted us out of our hopeless desperation, and given us something to believe in, to root for, and to pin our hopes on. He has become the champion for all that is compassionate, inspiring, and good. Never have we needed that champion more. Seabiscuit did it then, Barbaro is doing it now.

I like to amuse myself by thinking of the possibilities of reincarnation--for me this is not a stretch. In a NY Times article (Strong, Smart and Beguiling, Barbaro Wears a Triple Crown 5/28/06), Peter Brette, the assistant trainer for Barbaro, said that while he is not normally given to spiritual assessments of horses, prior to Barbaro’s accident an old friend of his from Ireland said she looked into Barbaro’s eyes and saw an old soul. She said Barbaro has been here before. Brette believed her. So do I.

I'm taking this one step further. Could Barbaro be the reincarnated Seabiscuit? Think about it.

For all that he accomplished here the first time around, Seabiscuit was not able to achieve 3 things: 1) winning the Kentucky Derby, 2) beauty, 3) siring successful progeny.

There is no question that Barbaro has Seabiscuit's heart, as well as his ability to inspire. If Seabiscuit were to come back for another round, he would surely want to claim the rest of what should have been his before.

So, if that’s the case, he has decidedly already won the Derby and the beauty pageant. There is one thing left and, he's on his way to doing that once he gets out of the hospital.

When that happens and he has sired others at least approaching his greatness, and I believe that will happen, I will have to believe that we have witnessed a reincarnation. I wonder if Peter Brette would agree with me on that. I bet his Irish friend would.

Go, Barbaro!! Hear the crowd screaming your name as you fly down that home stretch. Show us again who you really are!

Thank you, Jo Edwards, for suggesting the www.youtube.com video of 'Barbaro, Run for the Roses'. I'll be watching that over and over again--so beautiful. Thank you a million times over!

Shelley A., I didn't mean to imply that all horse owners should make all efforts to save every horse, no matter the cost. Like you said, the reality for most owners is that costs are a huge factor. I just hope that, for people who can afford it, Barbaro's progress will inspire them to give their horses more of a chance to survive.

Another good night for Bobby. That kind of news always makes my day!

Good Morning or should I say good afternoon? Another good night for Bobby is just what we all want to hear Alex. Thanks for your updates. The article about Peter was very good. I espesially liked the part about bobby having an "old Soul". When I see pictures of him this definately shows. Keeping Bobby and all of you in my thoughts......Pam from Ohio

More good news this am...Atta baby ((((Bobby))))

As for ((((Bobby's)))) condition...I'm thinking that if he has lost some weight it might be better for his legs. (Less weight to bare) When he fully recovers he can grow to be "fat and happy" like his Daddy. :):):)

Regarding Barbaro's little brother's..let's wish them all the best but don't place the burden of "replacing" Barbaro on them. They are their own horse so to speak. Let us take joy in their accomplishments whatever they may be.

Alex, thanks for the inside info in the latest updates.

Hoping this day brings continuing upbeat news for all. I know lots of people reading this have troubles of their own, and hope that focusing on what is going on at Fair Hill and NBC brings a respite from their own travails.

As Gilda Radner used to say - "IT'S ALWAYS SOMETHING."

That being so - Better get used to it! Roll with those proverbial punches, paddle upstream, get back on that horse - (running out of metaphors).

If this has been posted, forgive me...but anyone watching the races on ESPN yesterday--did you see how Michael Matz jumped up and was one of the first ones to shake Tom Albertrani's hand after Bernardini won the Jim Dandy? It was so quick it would have been easy to miss it, and the commentators didn't mention it.

Here I was, admittedly, kind of hoping Bernardini wouldn't win, and Michael goes and shows us all what a classy guy he is. Just amazing.

There is no doubt God has gifted Barbaro with incredible humans who surround him with love and strength. That includes all his connections at Fair Hill, on this board (thanks, Alex!), at Kennett and NBC and all the people out there who we might not even hear about who care for and love him.

    Go Bobby!

To L in Ohio, your welcome! ***Please note, Springtime also has special formula for dogs experiencing allergies--Spirulina tabs or Longevity... Remembered when Jimbo got stung in face. Immediately gave him Benedryl liquid via mouth syringe and pulled out the stingers. We had on hand Springtime's Fresh Factors & Spirulina Horse wafers. The combo works extremely well & prevented severe facial swelling.

Many years earlier we had his namesake and did not have freshfactors. Even with benedryl he looked like a chow instead of a springer until the swelling went down completely 5 days later. Wished I had used the combo for him...

With Fresh Factors & Spirulina tabs, there was very little swelling and he recovered within 24 hours -- really huge difference & a Godsend!

*****For horseowners,& Barbaro fans: There is a special article referenced for horse spirulina wafers used successful to treat supposedly'untreatable laminitis compounded by fracture in same leg"*****

    Here is an excerpt---

((From Springtime's real letters from www.springtimeinc.com (click on horse - spirulina wafers))

"I was told the horse should not have survived the amount of infection associated with his injury"

    Dear Springtime,

My biggest story to you is a rescue horse that we acquired on 7/29/05. Apollo is a 14 year old Thoroughbred that had stepped on a nail while out in a pasture. Days went by before anyone noticed that his right hind leg was swollen all the way up to twice its size. The owner was no longer able to financially care for the horse, so the nail was removed and the horse was cared for the best the farm could without any veterinary care. When I saw Apollo for the first time he was so skinny and his leg was double in size with a large, open wound above his right hoof. A week or so went by and it got back to us that Apollo was going to be put down. I contacted the owner and asked her if she would consider giving me the horse. She agreed and Apollo came home. We immediately gave him medication for the swelling.

A farrier that specializes in lameness heard about our horse and said that if we got x-rays done that he would take a look at them for us. On 8/12/05 I started Apollo on Spirulina Wafers along with the medication. By 8/22/05 he was up to 10 wafers per day. That is the day I got the results from the farrier. The nail had gone through the flexor tendon and shattered his navicular bone. I was told that the horse should not have survived the amount of infection associated with this injury and he certainly should not be walking. He also had laminitis in his left hind foot due to weight bearing on that leg. Both the farrier and the vets did not give me much hope for his recovery, but Apollo will tell you otherwise. His walking is almost normal on that leg. He has even trotted a few times on his good days. He has been putting weight on, and his coat and eyes look so healthy. We started him on C-Complex on 9/09/05 along with the Spirulina. We have had some minor setbacks and he still needs to be kept on medication to keep the swelling down, but, otherwise, he is doing great. I keep telling the professionals that Apollo is going to be one for their medical journals! I feel your products have a great deal to do with his recovery, along with his big heart!

So, if people & fans want to help Barbaro -- suggest possibly donating to him some springtime supplements like Spirulina wafers & Joint Health Formula in addition to other goodies you've been sending him...flowers are nice but he can't eat those...

I have a question for you experts here: Do you know if they make horse ice cream like they do for dogs and cats? My dog loves the frosty paws. Every night after dinner he sits in front of the fridge and looks at the freezer as to say give me my desert now. My cat's not crazy about it though. I was just thinking with the hot weather Bobby deserves something special, and ice cream came to mind.

    Hi Again Bobby,

I love the update on you. Your coat is nice and shiny and your eyes are bright. Must be all those carrots you are eating. Also, you get plenty of rest too, like a good boy. As for the little weight loss, I tell you it's better for your health. I was concerned about that when I made you the muffins and cookies, that's why I used a lot of low fat and low sugar stuff. Only the best for you my little friend. You have another great day now. Hope you little friend in the stall next to you is doing good. Maybe one day they can introduce you guys- nothing like another friend right. I sent you another card and I'm trying to put together something healthy and yummy for your tummy to send to you.Until later, remember always- I BELIEVE IN YOU BARBARO!

Oh, Michael Matz, you are so wonderful. First you survived that plane crash and helped other survivors (and I've seen video of that crash. I'm still shocked that there were survivors), then you go thru everything with our Sweet Bobby J, and then you shake your competitor's hand yesterday. You are one very special person on this planet - even though I do not know you personally, I am honored to know of you. Thank you for teaching us to rise above the more contentious and petty parts of our lives here and show us what true compassion and caring for other beings is all about. Thank you for showing us what is really important. Between you and your family, the Jacksons, Dr. R., NBC, KF, Tim and Alex, and all of us on this site...we're all learning. We're all one.

    Arlington update:

DRF online says Three Hour Nap walked into the ambulance "under his own power and was sent to Kentucky for surgery."

    Fingers crossed.

Posted by: Susan E. at July 30, 2006 4:41 PM

    Susan E.,

Here's an article about the breakdowns at Arlington, but I'm not sure you can get to it without registering (it's free). So far, neither horse has been euthanized. Three Hour Nap was shipped to Kentucky for surgery but it looks pretty bad for him. Catnour suffered a soft tissue injury and was placed in a cast.

The most disturbing part of this article is that the "independent inspector" who looked at the track a couple of weeks ago didn't turn in his full report to the Board. Instead, he apparently told track officials that if they did a few things, he wouldn't report them. IMPORTANTLY, this inspector was narked out by people at the track so keep that in mind.

It's a horrible situation. But again, it doesn't look to me as though the injury to Three Hour Nap was the same as the others.

    Nancy,
On seeing Seabiscuit in Barbaro. Thank you-- more and more see the same identical spirit as we do and am so glad even writers like Tim Wilken at the Times Union (TimesUnion.com) see it too along with his doctors, supporters & campaigners at www.campaigningforbarbaro.com -- check out their website (Barbaro's own special place), Laura Hillenbrand (author of Seabiscuit's bio), and even Peter Brette & Michael Matz, & the Mike Rea family, plus fans across America, and 7 other nations worldwide.

Yes, folks, the supporting numbers are ever increasing so keep spreading the good news...
Barbaro's captured the world's heart with his own BIG HEART. He can feel the healing energy just as Seabiscuit did. Are they one and the same?
If seeing is believing, then it is a resounding yes. Did you know Seabiscuit won a race at 7 years old when most everyone said it could not be done? Guess what, Barbaro is winning more hearts along the way as he recovers more each day!!! Let him know you care--let's keep sending those nutritonals and prayers, with our mantras:
(Special poem for Barbaro's Campaign to Make a Difference--inspired by Barbaro & Mike Rea, by Wm & CL (Shawclan)

    ****Seabiscuit To Barbaro****

    GO BOY GO,
    Rest if you must,
    Lord heal our great Barbaro
    who's won a nation's trust.

    Heart only like one other,
Seabiscuit's claim to fame-- There is but just another,
    Barbaro's his name.

    Living far greater,
    Than one could hope for--
    His spirit, God is creator,
    More than Life's core!

He is destined for much more.
    Strengthen him night and day--
What is needed to rest and snore.
    Show his shining spirit today,
As a testament to hero lore!

You are the one to beat this,
With loving care and caress-- Believe Blessed with a kiss,
    Lucky Swiftness your harness!

    Make believers of doubters.
    Great joy to be heard--
    Help Campaign all ye shouters.
    Help spread the good word!

    Not just for Barbaro's fight,
But for Mike Rea's too-- May both heal day and night
Richly blessed by all of you!

    Recovery's road may be long,
But tender care is there too-- Keep sending those donations.
    Each and everyone of you.

Lend a hand to a friend,
    Help a neighbor in need.
    Hold up another, don't offend,
Is the word of this noble steed!

    Contribute your time,
    Your money, your hands--
    Be it poetic rhyme.
    Or prayers from all lands.

    Expert minds can only wonder,
    Seeing Barbaro's will to survive--
    Marvel at MIRACLES we'll ponder,
Makes us thankful we are alive.

    GO BARBARO GO,
Listen, rest, soak up our love!
    You've grabbed us so--
Heaven's gift to us from above.

    Whispering your wise ways,
    Bring commonsense to reign--
    Uplifting our hopes these days,
Lead us safely back home again.

Forever thanks to Alex & Mike,
    Allowing others a sharing mind--
For blessed news raising the spike,
Focused on good and bad left behind--

    Good afternoon Barbaro,

I am so happy to hear that you are enjoying your weekend. I hope you are not missing Michael too much.

I was at Saratoga yesterday and actually had 2 michael signtings. The first was on a tour of the barns and track that was scheduled through the thoroughbred museum. Michael was with one of his children.

The second was in the paddock waiting for the post purade for the Jim Dandy. michael was walking into the paddock and I asked him how Barbaro was doing because I couldn't check Tim and Alex's web site as I was at Saratoga.I told him that I was one of those crazy and proud of it Barbaro fanatics. Michael said that he had a good night. I guess I heard the update as close as you can get from the horses mouth. He stopped for a second and I then asked him to thank Tim, Alex and the NBC staff for all of their wonderful work. I also told him that I hoped Barbaro enjoyed the carrots and the Delaware Park cap that I dropped off at the NBC 2 weeks ago. Finally he thanked me for the thoughts. Michael seems to be a really kind and understanding person. Barbaro you are really lucky!!!!

As for the race, bernardini did well but had no competition. I kept thinkging what good have been but sweet Barbaro you are going to win the race of life. Keep up the good work and continue listening to your doctors.

It would be SO MUCH EASIER to read a find then trying to spends hours searching through pages of comments. Thanks, Jacob and Thanks Alex for your help!!!

Hi Everyone!!!! Another good night for Bobby!!! Thank you for the updates, Alex.

Jo Edwards; Yikes! Did Nick get up after that? I saw Ian Miller bang his head one time several years ago and they carried him off on a stretcher. I think his helmet had flown off. Who won the whole thing? Noooo let me guess....Margie!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Where is Pamela today - putting the bird to bed or talking to Dr Dean on the phone??? Therese - where are you today? Talking to Bobby on the phone??? Haven't seen either of you post. I miss you.

Barbaro - what are you doing - haven't seen you post either. Resting, eating good stuff, boing boing in your swing/sling??? How was your bath yesterday? Feel nice and clean today - how good that feels. Think I'll go take a shower now!

I always see you Shelly A. I'm sorry Pammy isn't feeling up to par today. I'm sure she will check in later.

Shelly - while I was in the shower I was wondering - do they put some sort of mane and tail conditioner on Bobby when he gets his bath. We wouldn't want the main and whats left of the tail to get all tangled and get flyaways.

Bobby took my shower - feel soooooo good. How come you only get one shower a week??? xxoo and scratchies

I have decided that since he isnt my horse I would be his Aunty Sally.

    Aunty Sally

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 30, 2006 6:18 PM

    Sally,

I've never noticed them putting any kind of conditioner on my horses after their bath. They just use a big comb to comb through the tail and main. Part of grooming is pulling the mane and I'm sure he get some sort of grooming each day.

Posted by: ShelleyA at July 30, 2006 6:22 PM

Thanks Shelly - I knew you would have the answer. I do believe I read when he is groomed daily. No tangles for our Boy! Do you suppose he wakes up with bedhead??? or Bed Main??

    Dear Barbaromaniacs...

Today has been a banner day for the articles and poems...so beautiful...all of them. I wrote a second version of "Barbaro's Dream" a few days ago when I was in Phila for lunch with a dear friend - but it does still include Gallant Secret has having survived (but it is Barbaro's Dream nonetheless...). I just can't bear to leave her out, but I'm afraid of upsetting her people and those here on the site. Don't know - I don't want to be insensitive. Part of me wants this to be a tribute to her beauty and grace as well as Barbaro's determination (he is, after all, a Taurus, yes????) since I look at her pictures and see such beauty and gentleness. It would also be a tribute to those who are campaigning for track safety. Am still wrestling with this story even though I know my 5-year-old UK critic would love anything I turn out...

Sally in KW, sent you a long e-mail. I want you to feel better REALLY soon - we need your energy here on the board. Will distance send in about 30 minutes.

    Take care, everybody.

Judy, got your e-mail. Just thought of something - I'm going to the Phila show...are you out in the Chicago area????? Please tell me you're local...

My riding instructor always had me put conditioner on the tails of her horses. It was the spray on kind, not anything you wash out.

Lynda...Nick was really shaken up! He's broken his neck before so was really lucky to land as he did, even though it was flat on his back on top of the gate! Arko bolted off back towards the enclosure and had to be shushed back into the ring. Nick sounded close to tears when they interviewed him and he knew that it was going to take a while to calm Arko down and sort him out.
Anyway they're both ok which is the important thing, if a bit traumatised.

France's Roger-Yves Bost came first on Ideal de la Loge, beating Germany by 3 seconds. It was really exciting!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 30, 2006 6:40 PM

Shelly A - in the story, she's the mother of Barbaro's foal during Barbaro's Dream...that's why I'm wrestling with this. It would be gut-wrenching to her people to read this and its not my intention to upset them in the least. But she is so beautiful and that is what is tearing me up with this. I'm viewing her as an equine angel sent here to give awareness to track safety - sacrificing herself in the process. In the story, she plays a major role with my 3 main characters - mother cat/2 kittens who go on adventures. This is actually the latest in a series of stories I've written for my Abbie-girl.

I don't know. Gotta surrender this one to a higher power for guidance.

Even though I have been saddled with an abcess from root canal work and am in dire pain, I cannot go without a day to see how my favorite horse is doing. It is so gratifying to see how many people send daily posts to wish Barbaro well. I also , like others who have written drawn to the comparison on Seabiscuit. After reading the book and seeing the movie, I see such parallels on the caretakers of these two horses--compassion, caring, committemnt, love and pure humanity are the traits of both sets of owners, trainers, riders and others. Maybe it is a reincarnation--but whatever, there is something mystical in these two stories. Meanwhile, let us all contnue to pray and hope Barbaro has many more good days, continuing to heal and forging an amazing and miraculous comback to health.

    CINDI,

La Ville Rouge is a "smallish" dam and Dynaformer is a big guy. Bobby was also a big foal and she needed assistance during his birth. There's a great article about it on the NTRA website, in the archives. Or Google Barbaro + foal + Sanborn Chase and it'll come up.

Posted by: Susan E. at July 30, 2006 7:11 PM

Lynda...I think he's just off form. Before hickstead Nick said...
"Horses aren't machines and he has been competing at the very top level for years, and maybe needs a break," he said. "I'll take him to Hickstead, but only for the small classes. I want to go to Aachen if he's all right but if not, there is no point."

This was in a report tonight...

'After top-class early season form and two major grand prix successes, the 12-year- old has begun refusing fences, doing so at the last four international shows, and team manager Derek Ricketts was waiting to see if he had regained form.

It looked promising in Hickstead's outer rings over the weekend but the King's Cup setback left the issue in no doubt and Skelton said afterwards that he did not want to go to Aachen with the horse in that mood.'

Michael Matz knows show-jumpers and would probably have the answers as to why a horse suddenly decides not to jump, but I think Nick hit the nail on the head. They aren't machines.

Posted by: Jo Edwards at July 30, 2006 7:23 PM

I lost a couple pounds but I'm still looking hot. I gave Dr Richardson a big sloppy kiss for all you girls out there who are lusting after him. I don't see the attraction myself - he is testy at times but for the most part he loves me and takes good care of me. Thanks to all for the treats - I love them all very much.

I thought this was so cute.....

from the NRTA website, a snippet of Michael Matz's comments:

Matz gave some insight into Barbaro's daily routine.

"He goes in a sling at 8 or 9 o'clock in the morning," Matz said. "He sits in the sling; he's learned to use the sling. He stays there till 7 o'clock in the evening, they let him go, and he lies down.

"[When] he's anxious to get out of the sling, he moves around a bit, he makes noise like he doesn't like it any more. When he wants to get back in the sling he walks over to where the sling is. He's pretty amazing."

The image of Barbaro taking control of when he wants to boing in his sling and when he doesn't, brings a smile to my face. He is such a SMART boy!!!

Last time I talked to Barbaro he said he was looking for software that would translate horse language into people language. He also thought we would try using a pencil in his mouth to tap the keys on the keyboard. Its tough standing on two bad legs and one good leg while he hunts and pecks on the keyboard with the other good leg. I'm sure he will figure something out so he can start emailing us soon.

Oh - I do speak horse - hence the phone call from Bobby.

    TLC,

Doncha love details like that? I wonder what Bobby's 'don't-like-this-anymore' sounds like.

    Kim,

I hope you don't mind my copying this from the Lexington Herald-Leader. It's such a nice piece. Thanks for the link.
    _______________

    Equine inspiration

Today in a world fragmented with a new kind of war and our nation faced with a new kind of poverty, a beacon of hope is bringing us together.

Barbaro is the non-partisan, non-sectarian symbol rallying our nation around his spirit to live.

The war preceding Seabiscuit's entrance on the stage was a global land war, with losses in battles and lives. Aching poverty from a fall in the nation's market affected the masses. Seabiscuit became a rallying point, a hope for victory focused on an underdog.

The attention given this unseemly horse was all out of proportion, considering those saddled by a monied few. But he was a symbol of hope needed so desperately at the time.

    Today, there is Barbaro.

Every evening, millions check TV, Internet or their iPods with trepidation -- is he still standing? Will he win for us as Seabiscuit did in his time? We're hoping against hope and all sane reality that he will live just to walk, momentarily forgetting the question of progeny.

We will face tomorrow encouraged by his great will to do the impossible. For one small moment in this new century, we will have stood, united, devoid of selfish ambitions, cheering on today's underdog.
    ______________

Well, except for one thing: Barbaro is no underdog. He's a champion.

How cool is it that Bobby calls and emails you??!! I'm jealous. I guess ever since you Conchs saw him at the KW Airport you've had a special thing going.

Do you suppose Bobby likes Jimmy Buffett?

He has me in his cell phone so all he has to do is say Sally - and he is connected. But he has only called once - so dont get your hopes up he gonna be calling me anytime soon. An interesting site for those pedigree questions is www.pedigreequery.com...
If you do a throughbred breeding inquiry, you can see why Alex's answer on what is considered a half or full relation.
Going back (and Alex, help) the Thoroughbed started from certain breeding, and a lot of horses are related on the sire's side. For anyone into pedigrees, it kind of is amazing to see the same names over and over.
Kind of like my Schipperke (yes, Donna, she gets her hug and scratch constantly, unfortunately she now has developed a liking for my Diet Coke, and can suck down a Juice Box like no child you have ever seen...but the same names are there in her pedigree over and over...)
Now, Alex, if you can only get the Dosage Index through to me, I've tried for years....even though it isn't hardly used, I still wonder about it, but you explain things so clearly.

    Always,

    Re: Di...

As one of the many, many contributors to the
Barbaro 'cause', i.e. gifts to all the particu-
lars involved, I would like to say, and I am only speaking for myself, with all that these people
have to do in caring for all their charges at
New Bolten, Barbaro is not the only one there,
the people at the barns are having to carry on
with their jobs, etc., etc. So, I for one, am
happy to be able to bring perhaps a little bit of
sunshine into their lives as they go about their
regular business. There are times to give and
times to receive. Incidentally, word has come
back from Kennett Florist especially that they
have all enjoyed and appreciated whatever is
being sent to them, and under the circumstances
that report was more than I expected and it is
    enough.

As I have read through a number of the postings
today it seems that the tone has improved mightily
from a couple of days ago and that makes me happy.
Let's all keep up the good work and continue in
that way to show our appreciation to Tim and Alex
for being able to be on here in the first place.

Our prayers for Barbaro continue without ceasing.

Blessings to all of you, too.

Marie - I know you are just joking - I appreciate that. My imagination can go wild at times - maybe I should be a writer. I love our Bobby and its fun to do different scenarios with him. Makes it more enjoyable than thinking of him hanging out in the sling. I encourage all of you to do this. I know he is no way ready to walk out of here - but if he could be doing the things I'm imagaging - think how much more fun he would have!!

OK, does this happen to anyone else????

I have been reading the posts throughout the afternoon and thought "I'll go look at some happy video and pics of Barbaro". The next thing I know, I'm crying in the bathroom, praying out loud and feeling so sad again. Waht is up with that? We have had such promising news lately, I shouldn't be sad. ESPECIALLY looking at the "happy", before the breakdown pics and the video montages that don't show any of that.

Oh well, I will put back on that happy face and continue to send healing thoughts and prayers to Barbaro.

PS, are there any of you out there (probably all of you) that wish they could just see him for one minute to hug him and let the healing energy sink in??

We need to see if they will EVER allow visitors. :)

It doesn't take much for my feelings to swing from joy to sadness, for Barbaro.

I'm 57 years old and have been on a horse once in my life, but Bobby reminds me of the love and worry I have for 'Manda, Abbe and Da Fit.

It's odd, The Preakness was on my Birthday this year. My daughter took me to Outback for dinner and we sat in the bar, with a TV running the race.

My sister lives in Louisville, and is quite the horsie person, but I never have been.

My dear, late husband was a K-9 Policeman in Baltimore City Police Dept. We had 3 German Shepherds and the last one lived with the kids and I after Marty died, suddenly, of a massive heart attack. Solomon lived another 7 years with us as a pet.

I know there is a long road ahead and I know that the hoof needs to grow and the breaks in the right hind need to fuse and heal, but WHEN all of that happens, will they turn him out to see if the leg holds up or how will they know when he is ready for that?

    So many questions......

As far as his future: if he can stand as a stallion, he will probably go to a stallion station. I assume the Jacksons would retain ownership? Not known but after all this, one would think so.

If he can't stand at stud, which may be likely due to two severely injured back legs, he may go to Lael Farms to live with Mom and Dad Jackson--this is my impression from reading the article The Final Furlong linked at the top of this update.

Hugs to Beau and Jade! Thanks, they are terrific breed!

I'm sure he'll go through physical therapy/rehab, TLC, and that will give them indicators of what he is or isn't ready for or capable of.

    TLC,
    no, you are not alone.
Sometimes, when I do my vigil, I will play Debra Lopez's video and cry my heart out.

His continued good days are giving me hope. Having spent a lifetime of watching, hotwalking, grooming and finally training...I have seen some of my favorite horses go down. Ruff...Alydar..I just don't want to remember Bobby as breaking down, I want to think of him winning the Derby.

Our worry and concern gets to us all....some days we have the best board in the world,,,some days we get B****y....only because of our love.

So right now...I am going out in the 105 degrees to water my plants....and watch one of the dumbest movies..."War of the Worlds"...I mean exactly what were those people thinking in the beginning of the movie,,,I would have run for my life.

Donna, btw, my Schipperke hates the heat and is an indoor dog who lays on the air conditioning vents.
Just now, she got her name tag caught on it, and stood up with the whole vent hanging from her collar. She's fine, just not laying on the grates anymore.

    Love to Family,
    Susan

    TLC,

I forgot; depending on Bobby's health needs after the hospital, he might live at a farm that is equipped to handle special needs horses.

I'm not a horse expert, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I got most of this from our board horse experts and various articles linked on this site from day one. I wish I was a horse expert.

I would like that not only will he be rehabing the legs - but rehabing the body as well. There is a long road ahead of him once his legs are healed. After being in the stall all this time - he will have to learn to walk distance, keep up his strength will getting back into shape. Like any athlete - slowly. He has lost some muscle tone and that will have to be rehabed as well.

Just think of him as lifting weights, walking on the treadmill to get strenth back in his legs and body.

    TLC,
Every day is day to day....
My opinion at this time....he will be turned out and not be a stallion. If you have ever seen the breeding process, a horse has to mount and it has to be videotaped for documentation. At the Preakness, after seeing the x-rays, even before the Laminitis set it...I thought, no way, that is a catastrophic injury....BUT,,,HE HAS PROVEN US WRONG...and Dr. Dean is remarkable in his skill.
It's going to be a long road for him. But as long as he can stand, he will never be put down.
I think Mr. and Mrs. Jackson have shown us that.

    SusanW.
    Deb, panic attack...it'll be ok.

ALEX, THANKS FOR THE UPDATES AND THE GREAT ARTICLE FROM JASON (NY TIMES), IT DEFINITELY BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES, WAS A VERY NICE ARTICLE.

THE ARTICLE DISCUSSED THE PREAKNESS AND THE THEORIES ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED TO BEAUTIFUL BARBARO-WE HAD BEEN DISCUSSING IT LAST NIGHT SOME. ANYWAY, I COULDN'T HELP MYSELF (YES, I LOVE PUNISHMENT) BUT I WATCHED THE VIDEO LIKE 10 TIMES LATE LAST NIGHT, THE PART WHERE BARBARO MADE CONTACT WITH BROTHER DEREK AND PULLED HIS HEAD UP. I FINALLY REALIZED IT WASN'T GOING TO TAKE US BACK IN TIME, IT'S JUST NEGATIVE ENERGY SO I FINALLY TURNED IT OFF AND WILL NEVER WATCH AGAIN. I ALSO NOTICED FOR THE FIRST TIME, BROTHER DEREK HAD KIND OF A SAD, SHOCKED LOOK ON HIS FACE, WHICH MADE ME SAD TOO.

I SENT THAT LOVELY PHOTO OF GALLANT SECRET TO A GAL IN ONE OF MY YAHOO DOG GROUPS WHO DOES TONS OF CHARITY WORK FOR DOGS. SHE LITERALLY TAKES DOGS HOME OFF THE STREETS AND WILL PAY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR THEIR SURGERIES, SHE IS NOT RICH EITHER. ANYWAY, I FELT SO BADLY, SHE STARTED CRYING AND SAID SHE REALLY HOPES THEY FIND A WAY TO HELP THESE GORGEOUS HORSES FROM BEING INJURED SO FREQUENTLY.
    AMEN TO THAT!!!

    Sally and Renee,

In this visual of Bobby on the treadmill, is he wearing little earbuds with an MP3 player clipped to one leg? Or yapping on his cell phone? Never ceases to amaze me when I see people doing that at the gym. Bobby, however, will need to be talking to his agent and the rest of his people....

Posted by: Susan E. at July 30, 2006 10:22 PM

    Susan W.
I have to agree with you on your point about Bobby being turned out. Not only may he not be able to cover a mare, his soundability could now be in question, since there was no "reason" he broke the leg. But, like you said, the guy keeps perservering and showing us what he is made of, and that quality alone, may be enough for him to be sought after as a stud. Who knows. I just hope he makes it through and can live a happy and pain free life...as we all wish for him. It would be nice to see some of his babies, tho. Let's keep praying.

    Hello,again...(I'm the "other" Lyn:

Thank you for the resposes about Whirlaway,Sham, and PharLap. Your interest in my concerns about "how and where" racehorses end up is very kind. I hope others might become interested in the subject, and that they might take a moment, here, on Barbaro's site, to add to the information. This is only a small part of Barbaro's mission. Just like Sea Biscuit, his destiny did not end at that track.

With mention of "The Colt," "Sea Biscuit",and "PharLap"'s movies, you all might be interested to know that there is a TV movie about Ruffian due to come out in June of '07. No doubt, by then we will all be enjoying miracle reports about "our boy's" remarkable recovery...being attached to the movie's premier showing. Ruffian, Seattle Slew, and Forego had been my favorite horses...but now, Barbaro has an equal place in my heart.

Thank you to Alex, for his generous offer of visiting Barbaro. That is so like him, isn't it?

Be sure to contact all of your congressmen about HR503. Each one of us CAN make a difference. Each one of us is one-in-a-million. A million ones = a million. Barbaro is one-in-a-million, and all of those million other "ones" are depending on you.

Thank you to the Jacksons. You are the standard of all horse owners. Your class, grace, and love for Barbaro set's the bar for every single horse owner to aspire to.

Musing from the post about the dog with two injured back feet:
When my beloved German Shepherd, Sunny, lost the use of her two back legs , we purchased a canine-cart for her. For the last three of her 14 years, she was able to get around happily, and with dignity. Might some sort of equipment yet be invented which might accomodate a horse? Will such an invention be yet, another blessing added to Barbaro's legacy?
Do any of Barbaro's brothers have a white spot on their heels? I am especially interested in if the little guy does.
Here are my suggestions for Barbaro's as yet unnamed little brother:
Rea Rea, Bro 'O Bar, Troll's Bane, Bobabro, Gallant Heart, and Hunky Groom.

This site is a source of greatcomfort and inspiration. So glad to be here with all of you.

    Thank you, Beautiful Boy.

When Barbaro gets well enough to be discharged from NBC and if unable to breed it would be nice if he went to the Kentucky Horse Park. That place is fabulous. They have Cigar there because he is sterile along with John Henry and several other great horses. We went there a couple of years ago when we went to see Smarty Jones at Three Chimneys. Again, there is no conclusive evidence Brother Derek made contact with Bobby and clipped his heels.
I've watched the video, the MD Racing Commission has...I DON'T SEE IT.
I have my own theories,,but nothing to do with Brother Derek.
He was way behind Bobby and had to be pulled up with some smart riding by Alex.

    Lyn,
Not sure I can watch the Ruffian movie. I have many pics of her in the "sports room" ,,but I always can still, in my mind, see her go. And that was a total miracle they could even operate.
Just try to stay away from Black Beauty and Phar Lap....watch the Black Stallion.

    Love,
    Susan

Btw. Brother Derek is injured too...let's include him

Posted by: SusanW. at July 30, 2006 10:40 PM

Gallant Heart--that's a winner. No joking around. Wonder if it's been used. I will not look. If I start playing around on pedigree online AGAIN I will get nothing else done tonight....people keep mentioning horses, I HAVE to look them up.....it's worse than eating potato chips.

DOES the little guy have a white spot on his heel? It is an emblem of swiftness...just like Barbaro has. Barbaro's earliest ancester, The Godophin had one. (I too, read, "King of the Wind," when I was a little girl.)

Also, any thoughts, out there ,about the possibility of a mobility-cart for horses?

Posted by: Lyn at July 30, 2006 10:56 PM

oh no, what happened to Brother Derek? Is he hurt?

I have read review after review and talked at the track regarding Brother Derek and there are several articles on line. In my opinion, I feel Brother Derek did clip Barbaro. From what is being said from the slow motio replay - it states Brother Derek's right front hoof clipped Barbaro's left hind as Brother Derek was trying to move around Barbaro to a slight open spot....Barbaro's head goes up at the exact moment. Pimlico officials watched the tape in slow motion over and over and over and stated the concluded Barbaro was clipped in the fetlock area.....The folks saying it was inconclusive was the actual commission officials....Even Dr. Richardson stated it seemed like the only reasonable explanation.....
In my opinion, the clipping happened, which was noone's fault. Just happened......

Posted by: Deb G. at July 30, 2006 10:58 PM

Susan...Phar Lap was poisoned, or that's what they think happened to him. I just can't watch the film and not cry, and I know I'd be the same if I watched the film about Ruffian. I just fall in love with these horses and my heart breaks at the thought of them suffering and dying so young!

Wikipedia says in the 1980's Phar Lap's two autopsies were studied and it was concluded that he'd died of a bacterial infection that had not been diagnosed in the 30's. But, it also says in 1930 someone tried to shoot the poor horse. Susan W. mentioned a kidnapping...

Reminds me of Alydar. Murky and suspicious, at best.

Debra WI -- Good luck with your mare. I like the posting suggesting de-sentitizing her by giving her a low-stress no race visit to the track. Other ideas that have worked along with training -- TT - Tellington Touch (a form of Feldenkreis/somatic massage -- exquisitely relaxing) and flower essences, which work very well with some horses. I've used them for my animals and pre-post surgery to help them relax. The more "sensitive" the animal, some times the more effective these supporting methods can be. In addition, the mare may have a logic all her own why she's reacting, and you may discover some of that by keeping your "ears and eyes" open.

Good luck -- Susan in Saratoga

    ok...DebG..
    My theory.
Watching the gate accident, I thought he might have suffered a minor break...maybe a sesamoid. He could have clipped the back..and look at the scar on his face from hitting the gate.
Which not necessarily would show to the track vet.
I don't believe he suffered a misstep...good heavens...tracks are worked every day without raking it over. When he came out again...I think that caused the awful breakdown.
I think it might have compounded when he was let go to start.
I still say he should have been scratched...but not Michaels decision. The track vet said ok.....I say BS.
Brother Derek was not even close.

Susan H, I second the TTouch and the flower essences and the de-sensitizing for Deb's mare. Bach Flower Essences are great, but there are other wonderful companies out there...am just learning TTouch for both my cats and for horses (gave Windy's and Stormy's owner a copy of the TTouch for Horses last week and she nearly burst into tears. Her husband immediately insisted on paying me for the book - wouldn't take no for an answer...). My cats love it and the horses are getting used to it. Willow is going to practice on them to reinforce what her vet and I are trying to do.

Deb, did anything happen to her in the past? Any kind of shock or freaky occurance? No matter how small or insignificant...it could have a bearing on her current situation...

Let me know what therapies you want to use with her and I'll reinforce them.

Also its because I know how much the Jackson's love Barbaro he would be well taken care of. My biggest hope is that they will make sure that if he does go somewhere besides with them at their farm that he is taken care of by the best people there are.

Has anyone heard from Mary L. today?

Susan W: You could be right on with the gate incident. A good theory. Looked strange to me too. He might have been hurt there, but I do feel strongly Brother Derek clipped him (just my opinion and that of many others).

I have heard so much from the fact, he was injured slightly BEFORE the race, was acting up, trying to buck Edgar off, etc...breaks through the gates, almost like he knew something was wrong...I have heard conspiracies against him, mafia related, money related, someone hit his fetlock while in the barn, etc....the biggest one I have heard is: that the guy on the gate was paid HUGE (Bernadini's owner is overly wealthy) to pull Barbaro's GATE OPEN before the race so he would be scratched (which is what is usually done),,,,I have heard so many theories..

Yours is a good one.....I wish one day they would come up with something solid...

Deb G - that sure is a list of theories isn't it. I personally thought something happened either before he crashed the gate or when he crashed the gate. It happened so soon after he left with the rest of the horses that I was sure it had to do with something regarding the early crash of the gate. Just my opinion.

OK I'm still here you got me. Both theories sound good and maybe right.

    Hey ya Bobby J.,

Sorry for not posting lately, but I have checked the updates. Haven't been feeling to sporty myself.

So glad you are having good days and restful nights. You are the closest animal that I have to being a pet, so I think about you alot. So here's wishing you another restful night and a marvelous Monday. Slow and Steady, my frien.

By the way, I still see you, the roses, and the Kentucky Derby trophy in my picture above the desk.

    DebG...
NO I have known gate guys for years...He could not have made that happen and wouldn't. A minor break wouldn't show up right away....as you noticed they just took him back and loaded him up.

Bobby looked GREAT on the walk to the gate...acting up (in a good way...eating carnations off the lead pony)....

Deb, I watched four horses break through the gate on Belmont Day,,,including the awful Miraculous Miss incident....

I just looked at him and said...Boy you are ready to take the Preakness on his walk to the post. So, really, I think this was a bad gate mishap.

    Love to you ,
    Susan

Sally in Key West: I agree with you. I have my own theories to. I just can't believe the theories going around. Some are amazing. The theory about the guy getting paid at the gate (I hear this around the NYRA circuit because my horses are at Aqueduct), sounds amazingly like it could have happened. I am not saying it did, but what I heard was "If Bernandini's crew got Barbaro scratched they would stand to win millions and possibly even a Triple Crown Shot"....I know it sounds crazy and unprofessional and that thought did not come to my mind, just what is flying around....pretty sad actually....Others have said someone could have done something to his leg in the barn, etc...most say the gate incident was planned as those gates just don't open....

I have no idea myself. I am sticking to the fact that the horses (Brother Derek and Barbaro) clipped accidentally...

    Susan W,
You don't think gate guys would do that if paid well eough. I do. We had an incident here in CT with a greyhounds tail getting tied with fishing line and he lost his tail. The gate guy thought it would be funny. he is now paying his dues...good judge. Just a comment.

    Evening Ya'll,

Just stopping in for a quick update.

    Susan W.,

I saw your post earlier while I was skimming the others. How did Penny Lane accomplish that feat? Did she have that look on her face "Don't know how that happend Mom?" Skipper had a whole range of facial expressions and would pull one out at the appropriate time.

Posted by: Donna at July 30, 2006 11:48 PM

Yea, I don't know. Just relaying what I have heard. I have no theory, just the clipping one....I go up to Aqueduct on several weekends (next weekend being one of them) to watch the workouts/training, etc...I don't really socialize with many there....just the talk around the barns I hear....

    :-)

Deb G - perhaps the "incident" by Bernadinis peoples did happen at the gate - hense Barbaro braking early - he shot out of there like someone had hurt him or scared the crap out of him.

I still think its a gate thing - what happened at the gate we just don't know. But if someone did do something they should be hung by their testicles until death.
