Barbaro Updates: 22

updates are now here.

Update 319: Peter Brette just called, he had just heard from Michael (Matz) who had just visited (late afternoon) and all remains comfortable for Barbaro. Another good day, a long road ahead. HRTV did do a Bobby update today, and as reported in the comments they did emphasize the long road of which we are aware (thanks Jan for reporting in the comments):

HRTV- Barbaro Update
They basically reviewed the latest update from NBC.
They are verbally very cautious about Barbaro's condition
The long road to healing is usually talked about as part of this daily update.

I was laughing the other day that one of the commentators read on air his message that he had e-mailed to Barbaro. Hey we are not the only nutty people around!

The fact that HRTV is still doing a daily 3:30 EST Barbaro Update at least shows great sustaining public interest!

For those interested in more detail about New Bolton and their work, you might be interested in their 2002 video: On Any Given Day. Its 18 minutes, but very interesting.

I had been trying to identify who sent the flowers "poster" that was placed outside one of Michael Matz's barns at Fair Hill (currently our feature image), I received the following in an e-mail from the parent of the provider:

Well it was done by my 14 Y.O Daughter Kaylynne. Shes been following the likes of Smarty, Alex, and now Barbaro. She just wanted to do something to say Thank you. to the Chapmans, J Servis and Team Smarty to all the Cash is King Family, who truly let her enjoy the ride of her life last year. Now it's Barbaro who captured her heart, and wanted to give her best wishes to Micheal Matz, the Jacksons, and everyone associated with Team Barbaro

Finally, Round Pond worked a nice half mile under Peter Brette this morning at Fair Hill.

Update 318: Just e-mailed Jeannine Edwards and ESPN will cover horse racing from 5 - 6 pm saturday (east coast time). This will include the Diana Handicap and Jim Dandy. Graham Motion is planning to run the very well traveled Sweet Talker in the Diana, so we will be hoping she continues her great consistency (she's won 6 of her last 8 starts (dating back to may '05) and was 2nd in the other two. this will be her 9th different track...thanks Jeannine for that information). ESPN will provide a short update on Bobby (15 - 20 seconds) during this telecast.

Our friends from Kennett Florist report that Bobby continues to do well, they learned this from Dr. Sweeney during their visit today to drop off goodies for everyone.

Mike Rea's recovery process is certainly going to be a long one, and likely complicated by some unanticipated "issues" ... Mike, the rail is lonely without you!

Update 317: New Bolton's press release confirms Barbaro's comfort etc: Barbaro remains stable and comfortable:

According to Chief of Surgery Dean Richardson, Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro slept well after his left hind foot bandage was changed yesterday. "I'm happy with the appearance of this foot, which is doing as well as can be expected," said Dr. Richardson. "Over the last several days, his temperature has been normal and his blood work has significantly improved suggesting that the infection in his right hind is under control." His heart rate is also consistently normal now, a good indication that he is stable and comfortable.

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of Penn's George D. Widener Hospital.

The next update will be posted on Friday, July 28 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Its nice to see continuing Bobby coverage in New Zealand!

For the presentation I gave yesterday, at the beginning, I asked the audience how many people follow horse racing. I think three hands went up (the audience was about 60 people, who work in MBA administration). I then asked how many people were familiar with Barbaro, about 3/4s of the audience raised their hand. I then showed the audience this site!

Update 316: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). Saw Michael Matz on the horsepath as I was coming back to the barn and he gave me the good news.
updated wednesday 7:05am

Update 315: Wm & CL left a wonderful comment in Barbaro Updates 21 (Posted by: Wm & CL at July 25, 2006 03:32 PM) as a an explanation of how Barbaro has captured our imagination. The following is a short excerpt:

While Barbaro recovers, immense obstacles are being overcome as Americans recover. His struggle and our struggles are easy to understand. That is what grabs our hearts. In the imortal words of Seabiscuit's trainer, Tom Smith, and owner Charles Howard: "You never throw away a whole life just because it gets banged up a little bit." We believe Barbaro's owners, Roy & Gretchen Jackson, are of the same mindset including Dr. Dean Richardson and his medical team. Barbaro's same fierce fighting spirit and champion heart inspire us to go the extra mile for him while he is doing the same for us. He is giving us our second chance as we give it back to him.

So, Barbaro, we will sit and rest awhile with you when our hearts and soul get weary. From R. Loveland and B. Graham's words--'You Raise Me Up'--this is for you.

"You raise me up so I can stand on mountains,
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas.
I am strong when you are on my shoulders,
You raise me (us all) to more than I (we) can
be."

Hi Lou & JudyG,
I guess we're the early birds who open the board.

I checked the candle site as well and it does appear to be down. I doubt it has anything to do with us - it's usually electronic failure somewhere.

Classic line from Seabiscuit that makes the movie one of my favorites. Bobby certainly does 'raise us up' and gives us hope that spills over to our own lives.

May you continue to heal and have another good day.

Janet,

Seabiscuit is also my favorite movie. I can't even count how many times I've seen it (obviously I have it). The book - I've read and re-read numerous times.

Good morning Barbaro family,

What have now become my three favorite words have been posted: "Another comfortable night".

Excellent excerpt, Alex, from the note yesterday on why Bobby has captured our hearts. This site has brought together so many talented people and has produced a myriad of emotions. I've experienced joy on a number of occasions, fear, worry, and anger too, but that is rare. But mostly this site bears witness to that one profound emotion, love.

That excerpt showed very eloquently why we love this horse so much. This site has helped us all as we continue our vigil for Bobby, but know that many thoughts expressed, such as the one above, will stay with us always, and help us through other trials.

Bobby, stay comfortable today dear boy.

I suggest that people who want to send a contribution in the spirit of Barbaro, think about the organizations that rescue racehorses that have injuries often much less severe than Barbaro's and are sent to slaughter. These are horses whose injuries end their racing career but are fine for other riding, whether pleasure or competing in dressage, jumping, etc. They are just unwanted by their current connections because they can no longer race. There are some that place them in adoption instead of the auctions. I adopted a horse from Rerun and he is the sweetest boy. I cannot believe he was going to slaughter. He is awesome to ride. My friend adopted from Canter and I also give to the TRF (Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation). I am sure there are others, but I know these 3 and trust them. Some people have set up a rescue/adoption organization at my small local track. There are few things more fulfilling to me than knowing I helped save a racehorse. When I visit their websites I wish I could adopt more. Their stories are so touching, and I have never seen a horse that wasn't cute.
Just a suggestion to horse lovers out there. It makes me feel like I am helping one little piece of the world be better.

Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

Sweet Bobby J, good morning, dear one. Hope your sleep was deep and restorative. Today is a new day full of bright sun, hope, faith, healing, love. You are my sunshine...

Thank you, Tim, Alex for the update on our sweet boy. "Another Comfortable Night" is what I want to see every morning. Hugs to you, the Jacksons, the Matz's, NBC (security people, too. Sam the Security Guy was so nice yesterday...I should feed him, too.).

WM & CL - thanks for those beautiful, inspiring words. That song brings chills when I hear it and I can't sing it without breaking down.

I bought a equine veterinary reference book yesterday at Chester County Book Company. Now I'll have more of a reference point when we read any statements from Dr. R. or NBC. Pics are kind of graphic, but it helps me to understand what can happen to the horses we love.

During the night, I though of the lyrics to a song I've loved for years...will confirm the lyrics and adapt them (if I'm correct) into a lullaby for our Sweet Barbaro to post tonight before bedtime.

Healing to all,
Lyn Gilbert

Another comfortable night-how wonderful to hear. I can't start my day until I know how you are doing. I know that you know that we are all out here, sending love, prayers and positive energy your way.
Thank you, Mr and Mrs Jackson, for sharing Bobby with all of us. You have given him the chance to show us all that he is a miracle happening, and that he will heal and be home with you as soon as Dr. R gives the ok.
Dr R and Staff, you are the best. Bobby couldn't be in safer hands. I know that you all are doing everything possible for Bobby and it is working.
Michael Matz, your training has enabled Bobby to adjust to what he needs to do to heal. Thank you.

Handsome sweet Barbaro another good night that is such great news. You just keep being strong and getting stronger and we here will all keep praying and lighting candles for ya big boy. You are a miracle in the works.

Yesterday when we were at the Sears Tower in Chicago in the elevator going up to the skydeck a lady and her husband noticed my Barbaro t-shirt and so she asked me where I was from and I said Platteville, Wisconsin and I asked where they were from and they were from Pennsylvania actually from the place where Smarty Jones was from. Very nice people. They have heard of this site also. They said they get updates on the news every night back home about Barbaro. I had alot of people notice my t-shirt. I have another one I am wearing today. Today we are going to go back in to Chicago and hit the museums.

This website is just such a blessing. It is so important to us all. Thank you so very much Alex and Tim.

I love the update above with the Seabiscuit quote and the rest of what it says. So very true.

Bobby I hope you have a comfortable day and if there is a cast change that it will go smoothly and reveal good things.

Good Morning Barbaromaniacs!!!!!
Another Comfortable Night....I LOVE those words!
Thanks Alex & Tim !
Keep healing dear Barbaro!
I love what Sharri just wrote to Michael Matz! In this recovery, healing stage might be the greatest testament to how well Michael had trained Barbaro!

I went to bed last night with a heavy heart. I guess the stark reminders again as to how serious Barbaro's condition is...I never forget that, but I guess I do set it to the back of my mind as I rely on hopefulness.

Thanks to DR. R & everyone at NBC! You are amazing people!

Thanks also to Kennett Flowers. You are so much more to us than just the place to call to place an order. I love businesses that care...

Bob Dog looks like that in all the pics I've seen of him- he's a bouncy, alert, happy dog- with a human who loves him very much. He happily guards her garden tools for her...

I'm working on Boo Kitty- Bob Dog's attitudinal cohort, and hope to have her finished up this evening.

I know that more and more people are coming to this site. I know that I myself, have invited as many people as possible here. To raise awareness on all these issues and to see the genuine goodness in people all over.

I know that ALex has told us that there are really NO filters on this site and so I am very glad to see that even the disagreements have been fairly respectful here.

I respect the opinion of everyone here because I have been learning so much from each and everyone of you. Whether its from the spiritual side or the Clinical side, its only serving to help educate me on all issues discussed here.

Respectful posts, YES... Keep in mind that all eyes are upon us, YES.... Taking a step back before you post...YES. Censourship, NO...Afraid to ask questions and express yourself, NO...Posturing..WEll, OK ..once in a while.

Perhaps it is premature and naieve to say that "Bobby is Healed". Maybe what people are really trying to express is that "BOBBY HAS HEALED ME" I know that is the case for me personally.

Take a cue from Barbaro himself. Be cooperative, intelligent and strong.....BUT DONT TAKE ANY "YOU know what" from anyone, and NEVER GIVE UP YOUR FIGHT!!!

Below is the response I got when I emailed London about the head butting jockey!!!

Thank you for your email regarding the incident involving Paul O’Neill.

The HRA takes such matters very seriously and Mr O’Neill will have to face a Disciplinary Panel to answer a charge of improper riding (the category that this offence comes under). This matter will be heard at some point next week – probably Thursday.

This is clearly a very emotive issue and one which the public understandably feel very strongly about. However, the perception of the incident is, on inspection, far worse than the reality.

Whilst we do not in any way condone this type of behaviour, and would agree that it is totally unacceptable, the reality is that there was minimal contact between the jockey’s head and the horse’s nose - so little, in fact, that the horse barely reacts to it. It is clear from the footage that the horse is not harmed or injured in any way whatsoever, and from what I have seen in the press the RSPCA agree with this.

The punishment for the offence Mr O’Neill has been charged with is a suspension ranging from 1 to 21 days and given my comments above I’d be surprised if any suspension is not at the lower end of this scale. Certainly calls to ban Mr O’Neill for life are wholly disproportionate to the offence and whilst we have no desire to do so, there is no way that it would not be overturned through the courts.

Many people have suggested that if this goes on in front of the cameras, far worse must go on ‘behind the scenes’. There is no evidence either from our own stable inspections (over 400 per year), nor from the RSPCA or International League for the Protection of Horses, that this is the case. Indeed, Mr O’Neill’s actions were clearly carried out on the spur of the moment and ignorant of the cameras.

There is no place for this behaviour either on or off the racecourse and, thankfully, it is rare indeed – from around 500,000 runners in the last 5 years there have been less than 10 reported incidents.

I fully appreciate that the outcome of this episode may be wholly unsatisfactory for you, but I at least hope that this reply will help you to understand our stance.

With kind regards

Paul

What a nice way to start my morning reading about "antoher comfortable night' and moved by the great excerpt. I also have been reminded about the parallels to the story of Seabiscuit. As I was struck by the caring and compassionate people that surrounded his life, I am equally impressed by the people who are responsible for Barbaro. The honor and respect they pay, goes far deeper than their ownership of a winning racehorse; Mr. and Mrs.Jackson, Michael Matz,
Edgar Prado and the medical staff at New Bolton have shown an uncommon display of humanity, something the rest of the world seems to be lacking right now. Barbaro has come to symbolize great courage, perserverance, character and a fighting spirit --trsits that inspire us and soothe our souls. Rooting for him arouses the best within all of us. Our common love and affection for Barbaro brings us all a little closer together. Let the fight go on--Believe in Barbaro!

"ACN" What a wonderful way to start another day. Even before coffee I go right to the computer to see how Bobby is doing. I, too have always loved that quote from Seabiscuit. The fact that Barbaro's great spirit has effected so many lives is absolutely true.

Another rescue operation to check out is the wonderful Oldfriendsequine.com. I support this group that saves the old stallions from the fate of Exceller and Ferdinand.

Well, we are off to beautiful Saratoga for opening day today. Earlier in the year I was hoping that Bobby would be there but it wasn't meant to be. I will be thinking of him during the day. Have another great day buddy-soooooo many people are with you in this fight that I know you will come through it. God Bless You!!

Thanks Alex, Tim and all for this great website to keep us all together. It's priceless!!!!

I, too, got the same response from HRA. They obviously do read the emails because they referred to several comments I made - one of which was about the jockey's behavior "off camera". I like to try to be a fair person but don't know that I can agree with their opinion.

I agree Janice - he addressed several issues I wrote about as well. I do not agree with him but hey - different strokes for different folks. I haven't seen the video so I do not know how hard he butted the horse - I still think he needs to go away.

Good Morning Barbaro my love - glad to hear you had a good night - and you will have a good day today I'm sure. Dr Dean will be releasing new info - I'm sure its good news. You rest and relax in your swing - I mean sling - eat well - nip a little - remember we all love you and are praying for you! xxoo and scratchies

Lorraine, well said! You "spoke" my thoughts perfectly.

Tim and Alex, thank you so much for providing your website as a place for us to gather and get the latest Barbaro news, and for allowing us to give accolades, get information, vent our frustrations, and keep us abreast of the issues and concerns regarding the horseracing industry (where you make your livelyhood!). As it has been said many times before, this site is a godsend.

Thanks to all of Bobby's caretakers and "parents." He is a special boy and, even though you're all well aware of that, it doesn't hurt to hear it over and over!

Thanks to all the posters here for keeping the information and good vibes flowing!

Love you Bobby! Keep the faith - we all are! Grow hoof grow!

Suddenly started thinking about Phar Lap...I fell in love with this horse after seeing the film, and he still pulls at my heart strings even though he's been dead for over 70 years.

Bobby, just as Phar Lap, Seabiscuit and so many others have, has really got under my skin and he's become such a big part of my life.

Good morning everyone. ACN works for me. I too like the Seabiscut quote and since Bobby's accident have re- read the book and watched the movie. What took place in the 1930s with Seabiscut and the nation seems to be happening now with Barbaro. He's bringing us together and we're rallying around this horse. Continue to heal baby boy and much love to everyone involved in your care.

Hi all, I am SO GLAD that Bobby had another comfortable night. May he have many, many more.

Mike Rea did not have a good day yesterday. He had to sit in a doctor's office for hours because of a mix up and they had The Animal Channel on and there was a program on about the slaughter of dogs and cats ( I am thinking for the meat and fur for Asia and Europe - I will look at my TV guide when I get home.) and he was so upset. This is on his Recovery site - the link is at the top here in the left column. All he did then was implore his family to save the animals and kept asking about his dog, Candy. He was so upset.I can't even imagine that he had to go through that.

There is a very informative article on thoroughbredtimes.com about yesterday's anti- horse slaughter hearing. It lists the "players" but also "good" people and Barbaro is mentioned.

I did see the horse butting incident and the jockey's apology. It is more sincere sounding Than in November 2002 when Victor Carrero threw his whip and a clump of dirt at Saltaat when he flipped over at the wire and had to be euthanized on the track as he broke his left front cannon bone. I don't care if he was young and only 21 at the time. I will not post my feelings here out of deference to Tim and Alex and the young folks reading. Edgar Prado is a class unto himself and I will forever be grateful to him for his compassion and I will always cheer him on. He is a class act.
If I was Saltaat's owner, breeder and trainer Deborah Bodner I would have ended up doing time.

Thanks Lisa for the link. - this looks like NBC's update today but it is on a different web site. They must be having problems with their site.

According to Chief of Surgery Dean Richardson, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro slept well after his left hind foot bandage was changed yesterday. “I’m happy with the appearance of this foot, which is doing as well as can be expected,” said Richardson. “Over the last several days, his temperature has been normal and his blood work has significantly improved suggesting that the infection in his right hind is under control.”

His heart rate is also consistently normal now, a good indication that he is stable and comfortable.

Barbaro remains in the intensive care unit of Penn’s George D. Widener Hospital.

The next update will be posted on Friday, July 28 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

I never quite understood this statement about a horse being a "folkhero" until I read the whole post from above. Wow! That's what Penny was talking about in the Secretariat video. That's what Gretchen was talking about. I feel more empowered this morning.

Yup that about sums up the whole thing.

So Bobby you keep munching on your special hay, don't forget your carrots and maybe Dr R will see to it that you get a peppermint for dessert because you are a champ. Take it easy. Rest in your sling. Take a load off. And don't forget it's okay to jolly jump! (boing boing boing).

For me I guess I've felt a little derailed the past couple of days. I really needed to read that post. Kinda brings back into perspective (CJ forgive my lousy spelling!) why I'm here and why its important that Bobby knows so many of us haven't given up on him.

Good morning all. I'm thrilled to read Dr. R's update. Sounds like our boy is doing as well as can be expected.

Here is the response I got from Dr. Patty Hogan.
For those of you that may not have been here yesterday, Dr. Hogan was one of those who testified before the committee yesterday for HR503. Since I know her, I sent her an e-mail telling her about this group and asking what we could do. Here is her response.

Hi Shelley -

Thank you for your nice words and support. I was proud to be there and I think we were really effective. This will pass at some point or another because people are so outraged at it so public opinion will end up swaying the vote.

I am not sure where to send you to do more but HSUS lobbies quite a bit for this bill and then Congressman Whitfield is the major sponsor of it. He is the one who had contacted me about helping.

I will keep it in mind if I hear of something but spreading the word is a good thing!!

Thanks again!

When I posted a minute ago I hadn't read your post. Then I went over to NBC--yyiiipppeee! Bobby one day at a time. Don't rush sweetie. I know you want to go home (WE all want you to). But for now slow and easy is just fine.

So your bloodwork is showing that the infection (in the right hind) is under control. Oh Bobby that is great news. Bobby that means you have a chance for the pastern to start fusing. Dr R got all that infection out when he did that big surgery a couple of weeks ago. Way to go!

Bobby you keep fighting and we'll be right by your side every step of the way. Know that you are not alone in this.

NBC, Dr R et al, Michael, the M/M Jackson and "Team Barbaro" thank you for not giving up. Thank you a kazillion times over for giving Bobby a chance to show everyone what a champion looks like. Bobby is the horse that you spent your lives breeding for. Keep up the fantastic fight Bobby. You can do this.

Michael's Miracle

Posted by: Margaret at July 26, 2006 2:57 PM

Okay, everybody --
Last night I found a pink growth on my old beagle, Garth. It looked worse than a skin tag...more like the malignant one he had years ago. I was going to bring him in to the vet this morning. But this morning...the growth is gone. This was definitely a growth. It was attached. I looked at the root of it, etc.

What is going on here? I sent the same kind of healing hopes to him that we are all sending to Barbaro...and somehow...it worked.

Yesterday there was some discussion here about science and belief, and about how science is the preferred world view. But I think those of us who do send prayer or healing energy to Barbaro need to continue to do so. Some of it may even be spilling over to each other's pets, and to each other.

The classical sciences as I studied them in school tend to have an exaggerated sense of their own solidity. The world of quantum physics (not taught in schools when I was young, although certainly good science for 50 years by the time I was in high school) has blown a hole through all of that.

Subatomic particles can exist in two places at one time, or everywhere and nowhere until measured; light is sometimes a wave and sometimes a particle, and only decides which it is going to be when it is observed...

Niels Bohr, a pioneer in this field, said that "anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it".

I find it somewhat less peculiar to believe that belief affects healing, than to believe in all the crazy and wonderful properties of the quantum world. But I believe in both, actually. And I also believe in medicine. All go hand in hand, each being useful for what it is. I don't think it has to be science OR prayer -- and many contemporary scientists would probably agree, in light of quantum theory.

Or, let Einstein say it: "Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." (Interpret "religion" however your higher power suggests...)

Suggested reading: "In Search of Schrodinger's Cat -- Quantum Physics and Reality" by John Gribbin.

Barbaro is happy and confident. He believes he will be well. Being Like Barbaro is good enough for me.

Have a great day, everyone.

Regarding Funny Cide and the Arlington Million:

I don't think that the track conditions have anything to do with Sackatoga Stable's decision not to run him. Unless I'm mistaken, Arlington Million is a turf race, and FC runs on dirt, and it's a Grade I, a level at which Funny Cide hasn't been competitive in a couple of years.

As for him running at Saratoga: he hates the heat and always runs poorly in it, which is why he's never run here. Given the temperature up here, they'd be taking a real chance entering him this summer.

Teresa- you are correct about Funny Cide. He doesnt run on the turf. They were thinking about running him in the washington park Hcp on dirt, but expressed concerns over the track to the blood horse. I think that is why they arent running him there. Jen

I would like to respond to Mr. Paul Struthers. Public Relations Manager, HRA:

Thank you for your reply to our e-mails concerning the incident involving Mr. O'Neill.
I agree that, thankfully, the horse was not seriously injured, and the perception of Mr. O'Neill's actions may differ from the reality of the situation.

However, as a Public Relations Manager, you must surely be aware such perceptions are often the sole basis of forming we call the reality of the situation. I find this to be especially true when that perception reveals a malicious intent on the part of the perpetrator. There can be no doubt as to the intent of Mr. O'Neill in this instance. There was no evidence of compassion, but, rather, a conscious decision to extract a measure of reprisal upon the horse.
This certainly gives the perception that Mr. O'Neill actions were small and petty. I believe it is a perception that the HRA can ill afford.

In the final analysis, it is upon the shoulders of the public's perception that trust in this sport is carfully weighed.

It is my sincere desire that the intent of the HRA is to be as decisive in its actions as was Mr. O'Neill, and that the trust the public places in their perceptions of this sport are not misplaced.

Sincerely...

Thanks to Alex for his update and for several of you for the UPenn release. Encouraging news! I'll have to get to work now, but Barbaro will remain in my thoughts. Wonder when the right hind cast will be changed? Maybe there's no rush since Dr. R says the indications are that the infection is under control. Would love some news that the bone graft is fusing (or whatever it does), but I'll be patient and satisfied with the news thus far. Love you, beautiful boy!

New Bolton update:
Barbaro remains stable and comfortable

July 26, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — According to Chief of Surgery Dean Richardson, Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro slept well after his left hind foot bandage was changed yesterday. “I’m happy with the appearance of this foot, which is doing as well as can be expected,” said Dr. Richardson. “Over the last several days, his temperature has been normal and his blood work has significantly improved suggesting that the infection in his right hind is under control.” His heart rate is also consistently normal now, a good indication that he is stable and comfortable.

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of Penn’s George D. Widener Hospital.

The next update will be posted on Friday, July 28 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

I just read this about the horse slaughter bill;

"Backers of the bill include the Humane Society of the United States, Churchill Downs Inc., the National Thoroughbred Racing Association as well as other breeding, showing and racing organizations. Opponents include the American Quarter Horse Association, the American Paint Horse Association and horse councils in 10 states, including Texas. "

Sounds like we need to be on the backs of the AQHA, APHA and the horse councils in the 10 states, whoever they are.

the "good ol' boy" mentality, unfortunately, is alive and well in some areas of the south. I feel that the horse slaughter issue falls into that mentality. I'm hoping and praying that those in favor of stopping this horror speak volumes louder than those wishing it to continue.

Even the employees...that horror has got to be hard on the human psyche, too- even if they claim to be able to 'brush it off'.

Good Hi everyone,
We are out here at Del Mar getting ready for our show tomorrow. (7pm, ESPN2) We are planning on doing a Barbaro update about 18 minutes into the show.... nothing elaborate, just a mention as part of a "news segment", one of 4 items.

Another item in the segment is an update on Gallant Secret. I'm very sorry to report that Gallant Secret had to be euthanized the other day at New Bolton. She went there for surgery after her accident in the Del 'Cap. She had soft tissue and skeletal damage... they had done surgery to insert a plate and screws in her left front ankle. Upon recovering from anesthesia (NOT in the pool but in a recovery stall) she struggled and thrashed and rebroke the leg. Her trainer Jim Jackson gave us the sad news. She was a very courageous, consistent filly who outran her pedigree and expectations. A very sad ending to a tragic story. Let's hope Barbaro's story has a better ending!!! Already he is beating the odds.

Take care everyone and have a great weekend.

Stay off those front hooves as much as you can and keep up that great attitude through this long, painful seige and you will MAKE IT! I love to think about, as another of your web fans said, of you being presented at next year's Preakness. As a member of the AQHA I know very well that they have been against this slaughter bill. They have been sending out "propaganda" trying to get the membership to understand their stand on it. this association has a lot of money to lobby too. Ditto for the APHA the paint horse assoc. Problem is a lot of the members support it because they feel like they need somewhere to get rid of their unwanted horses. You might be able to find out exactly their position at AQHa.com Jen

To all concerned,

COINCIDENCE? or are we creating awareness?

Just this morning on WISN 1130 Talk Radio here in Milwaukee Wisconsin, one of the biggest topics they were discussing was "The Horse Slaughter" issue.

Just an FYI, from what I heard, it sounds like ABC will be doing a story on Americas Little Secret - "Banning the sale of Horse Processing."

Again, I just caught the end of the segment, please do your research.

I did hear that in September, when congress takes this on, some of the arguments will be "Why aren't we campaigning against Cow and Pig Slaughter?" Is it because those animals are ugly and the horse is majestic?

This may have been brought up before however, I just wanted to underscore that 50% of the listeners did bring this issue up.

I'll try and get transcripts.

Let's be prepared.

Why did they not put Gallant Secret in a recovery pool like Barbaro? I have always loved animals but just didn't know about horses. Now that I am really interested in Barbaro, I have a heightened sense of compassion for horses. I hate when they have to suffer. I had no idea they were slaughtered. It makes me sick to my stomach just the thought of these beautiful animals being treated this way.

Not only do we have those 3 magic words - Another Comfortable Night - but we also have the NBC official press release, including blood work "significantly improved" indicating infection under control - slept well - WONDERFUL! Continuing Miracle In Progress.

I had a computer meltdown yesterday - first mouse quit, then keybord froze, then puter wouldn't reboot - OY VEY! Finally straightened it out without having to buy anything significant. Felt absolutely isolated not being able to access this site! Didn't know how dependent (addicted?) I am to this total experience.

Continuing and perpetual thanks to all who post here, and to whose who make it possible (Tim & Alex and crew), and especially to all of Barbaro's connections, starting with the Jacksons and to and including all the NBC caregivers and all who interact with our boy, and this time I can't omit the cheerful deliverers from Kennett Florist & Catering Service.

On my message above (3:41 pm today) I have reposted Jeannine Edwards' note containing the only information we have on the fate of beautiful GALLANT SECRET which she received from James Jackson, Gallant Secret's trainer. I am sorry that I didn't properly preface the reposting, as I still can hardly see through the tears to type when I think about her.

As you may know, you can view Barbara Livingston's touching photograph of Gallant Secret back on BARBARO UPDATE: 18, in Update 298.

I hope with all the efforts here and elsewhere to improve racing conditions we will have fewer of these devastating tragedies.

Thank you, Barbaro, for all you are doing for your fellow travelers.

Everyone - have a great day, another GREAT Bobby day! Off to work -

Debra,
my reasons against it are not that the horse is 'prettier', but has been bred to trust humans- this domestication has become genetic, just as he domestication of dogs and cats have. They are companions and pets, not just livestock.
That and the means used in this slaughter were not designed to accomodate horses, but cattle.

I am not a meat eater, outside of fish and occasional chicken, for two reasons:
1) I don't need it to be healthy
2) Outside of fish and chicken, I could not kill an animal myself in order to make use of it's flesh at the expense of it's life.

and then there are all the hormones and such, but that's a different tangent.

Just found the following article, Horse slaughter gets congressional airing, dated, I believe, yesterday. Just thought I would post it for your review.

Horse slaughter gets congressional airing
By SUZANNE GAMBOA

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — Supporters of a ban on horse slaughter lost a valuable congressional ally Tuesday but hoped for a boost from Texas oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens joining their cause.

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Joe Barton, R-Texas, said in the first hearing on a proposal on the divisive issue that he no longer supports legislation aimed at ending the slaughter of horses in the U.S. for consumption overseas.

Barton said he previously supported the bill sponsored by fellow Republican Reps. John Sweeney of New York and Ed Whitfield of Kentucky, but dropped his support after learning more about it

"The agriculture community and rural America just is totally against the bill," he explained in a hearing break.

Pickens, a major Republican contributor, chastised his own state for being home to two horse slaughter plants. The third is in Illinois.

"This is a black eye on our state and nation that demands action," Pickens, of Dallas, told the panel.

Pickens said nearly all thoroughbreds, Arabians, quarter horses and wild mustangs sent to the plants are healthy young horses that he said the USDA has said are in "good to excellent" condition. He questioned why the state allows foreign countries, that he said pay little taxes, to slaughter American horses for consumption abroad.

"They should slaughter their own horses, not American horses," he said.

Congress tried to end the slaughter of horses last year by overwhelmingly approving legislation eliminating funding of Agriculture Department horse meat inspectors. But USDA is offering inspections on a fee-for-service basis to the plants.

The bill has 201 co-sponsors. Republican leaders have scheduled a vote for Sept. 7.

But opposition is fierce. The hearing on the bill stretched over about three hours and had to move to a larger room because of interest. Witnesses' comments were met with applause and gasps from some attending the hearing.

"This legislation is woefully inadequate, emotionally misguided and fails to serve the best interest of the American horse and horse owner," said Virginia Republican Rep. Bob Goodlatte, who chairs the House Agriculture Committee.

Dick Koehler, vice president of Beltex Corp., owner of a Fort Worth-based horse slaughter plant, urged lawmakers not to eliminate an entire industry, "just because animal rights activists find the product of this law abiding, tax paying legitimate business to be distasteful."

The proposed legislation does not ban the slaughter of horses outright. Instead it bans shipping, transportation, delivery, receiving, buying or selling or donating of horses for slaughter for human consumption, putting it under the jurisdiction of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The bill also would prevent sending horses from the U.S. to Canada or Mexico to be slaughtered.

Sweeney said he took that route because the Agriculture Committee has sat on previous legislation seeking to ban the horse slaughter and not given it a hearing.

The full Energy and Commerce Committee's scheduled a vote on the bill on Wednesday. The House Agriculture Committee plans to consider and vote on the legislation on Thursday.

Divisions in the issue are not neat. They split members of the same party, horse associations, veterinarians and others and create unusual coalitions such as in the case of Pickens, who is on the same side as animal rights activists.

Supporters of the ban said horses are mistreated and abused when they are sent to horse plants by being shipped in inhumane conditions and are sometimes alive when they are being slaughtered. In addition, they say horses in this country have iconic status and are not raised for food.

"Would we ever serve a bald eagle in this country?" Sweeney asked.

But opponents say horses are euthanized humanely before they are slaughtered, their transport is heavily regulated and would suffer a worse death of starvation and neglect if slaughter was eliminated.

"Where do you get the money to foot the bill?" said Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Pa.

My dear Barbaro family,

A fellow "family member" has written to me and told me that some of you are wondering where I am (thank you for thinking of me :) .. I have read the updates every day but have not posted. Last Friday I found out that I have a potentally (underline potential .. I am a worrier) scary health problem and am going in for the initial diagnostic tomorrow .. I have been pretty down, and, therefore have not been my usual self. (Mary L. I hope that you are doing well.)

Also, even at the largest I.E. text size, the small font size of the posts strain my eyes .. ALEX .. several of us have asked if you could increase the font size of the posts by just a bit. I know that would make for fewer posts per page, but it would certainly help those of us who have poor "close up" vision .. reading glasses do not help.

Again, thank you for thinking about me .. I'll see if I can be here more frequently :)

God Bless,
Dee

Hi Jan:

I've seen that photo several times and I've often wondered about it myself.

Whoever it is sure is lucky to have the staff explain the whole thing to them.

My story

"Bobby, this is your xray from last week. Now we just got this picture this morning. See the fusing taking place?"

"No, not really," replies Bobby.

"Bobby", say the techs. "Here and here." The vet techs all point to where things are taking place. "All we need you to do is eat, sleep, play in your jumper and think good thoughts. For the time being don't worry about the left foot. That is coming along."

The point? Bobby is coming along. We don't know how fast nor should we worry about it right now. Slow and easy is just fine. Bobby by all accounts is happy, he's eating, his eyes are clear. We know he's gradually coming off those pain meds which is a terrific sign as far as I can tell. He's playing in his sling which is an indication of not just boredom but of a horse that is actively being creative.

I saw a horse in KY in 96 that I swear learned tricks to keep people at his stall. He would stick his tongue out and then roll the sides up. Then he would stick his tongue out and fold it back on itself. Not only was this horse fetching in his tricks but he was teaching neighbor horses the same tricks.

Horses also teach themselves how to get out of their stalls. They don't do it to cause they're being "bad". Their bored. But they can get into a lot of TROUBLE! They get into the feed room (and I'm not going to go there). They could possibly get out on the street. Sometimes owners have to get pretty sneaky on how to keep their horses in their stalls!

Perhaps some of the people here who currently have horses can tell us of their experiences.

And I'll start with one. I use to board with these gentleman who played polo. This man hobnobbed with a lot of movie stars in LA. But he wasn't stuck up or anything like that. He loved horses. He had a horse that use to break lead ropes everytime he tied them. Horses will do this just to see if they can break the lead. It became a game. Very expensive but a game. So this guy outwitted the horse. He started using a thread. A thread being very easy to break the horse didn't have to jerk back his head. The game was now done.

To Anna- thank God for people like you! I use to eat meat until I learned how vicious animals were being treated and killed- I wish there were more people like you. I am glad Barbaro is surrounded by people that love animals. I am glad they are giving him a chance.

The following was posted on the MSNBC message boards...

A legislative hearing Tuesday by the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection. concerning the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act a drew a large crowd, causing the hearing to be moved after opening remarks.
The original room was standing room only and could not accommodate all of those who wished to attend.

The bill, which has over 200 co-sponsors, seeks to amend the Horse Protection Act of 1970 by prohibiting the slaughter of horses in the United States for human consumption overseas.

Three witnesses for the bill and three who opposed the legislation testified in front of the committee. The supporters for the bill were T. Boone Pickens, Dr. Patricia Hogan, and Russell Williams. Those who spoke against the legislation were Dr. Bonnie Beaver, Dr. Doug Corey, and Dick Koehler.

One of the main concerns about the bill involved what would happen to the thousands of horses originally destined for slaughter and who would be financially responsible for them if the bill became law.

"By banning slaughter in the U.S., it will not stop slaughter," said Corey, the vice president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. "It won't stop a Ferdinand from happening (the former North American Horse of the Year was believed slaughtered in Japan after going there to stand at stud). I would prefer to have these horses processed in the United States where there are regulations."

"We are all concerned about the fate of unwanted horses," said Dr. Hogan, the chief surgeon for the New Jersey Equine Clinic. "We are just removing one option (by passing this bill)."

Both sides agreed that the legislation elicits emotions because the horse is viewed differently in America than other livestock.

"Can we imagine Barbaro being sent to slaughter if he can't recover?" asked Williams, who is the vice chairman of the American Horse Council but was representing his personal views at the hearing. "Why should other horses be any different?"

Beaver addressed the emotional side of the issues as well, stating, "The concern about emotion is real, but the concern about humane care is even greater."

Another issue involved with the bill is concern about the government's right to regulate private property.

Koehler, the vice president of Beltex, one of three slaughter houses in the United States, said, "It is a matter of choice. If you wish to do that with your horse, I believe you should have the choice to do that."

"I don't think most of the time people know where their horses are going," said Pickens, the chairman of BP Capital Management who is married to the former Madeleine Paulson, a longtime Thoroughbred owner and breeder. "The kill plants are here to make money, and I think that ought to be addressed."

The lead sponsors of the bill -- Reps. John Sweeney and Ed Whitfield --were in attendance as well as Rep. Bob Goodlatte, who is heading the opposition.

The bill is scheduled to go before the full House of Representatives in September.
