Barbaro Updates: 23

updates are now here.

Update 324: Kennett Florist have just visited New Bolton and have this to report:

Just back from NBC... Mood is good, and reports say that all is well with sweet Bobby. Today we delived a special treat for the gang at NBC. A very wonderful Barbaromaniac (Lisa in NY) had special chocolates made up... they looked like PA license plates that said BARBARO on them! They were so very cool! If I ever get my hubby to get a website going for personal KF stuff, I will post the picture. The basket also included chocolate stars and chocolate bandaids (for life's boo-boos). The staff absolutely adored them. Dr. Sweeney was going to hold onto one to give to the Jackson's; who, by the way, are back and will be in this afternoon to visit Bobby.

We will be back up in the morning as someone is treating them all to breakfast... and in the afternoon, ice cream sundaes! That's going to be fun for all! You guys and gals are all great!!

Comment is posted: : Rachel at July 27, 2006 07:57 PM (note that is UK time, not US time!)

Update 323: This morning we had Michael Bryant, a photographer, visit Fair Hill and Tim's barn. Very cool guy. He had covered Barbaro for the Philadelphia Inquirer during Bobby's training at Fair Hill leading up to the Preakness, and Preakness Day. He has a blog, and on his blog he has an entry of photographs from the Preakness. The entry also includes this text from Michael:

I was one of 100,000 people at Pimlico when Barbaro broke his back right leg and ankle. The gasps and the screams from the crowd was something I have never heard in my life and I hope I never have to hear again.

The entry is here: Barbaro Breakdown, please do not visit if the Preakness coverage upsets you as these pictures, while very good, vividly and uniqely portray the horrific incident.

I asked Michael if he would create a blog entry of some of his other Bobby pictures from Fair Hill. He showed them to me and they are very good, so lets hope he does.

Update 322: We were told there would be a cast change this week on Barbaro's right hind leg. This did occur, yesterday (wednesday). Michael mentioned it to me this morning, Kathy Anderson also noted the cast change when I caught up with her a little later. I believe they actually changed both casts yesterday. Anyway, from what I understand they are pleased with what they saw, but I do not know the details. It is just a relief to know the right hind cast change has occured, and it was done in the sling etc. This makes changing the cast a little more tricky I think, but much better for Bobby!

Update 321: Another comfortable night (wednesday night) for Barbaro. I saw Michael Matz and his set as I was coming to the track with my second horse. I took some photos so will hope to get a couple on the site later.
update, thursday july 27, 7:15 am

Update 320: A few more pictures of Barbaro, from Fair Hill, before the Preakness. The following is a short poem, provided by Kim from yesterday's updates:

I have a short poem I heard many years ago that I want to share. I think it's called "Don't Quit"

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're traveling seems all uphill;
When funds are low and debts are high;
When you want to smile but you have to cry.
When cares are pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but DON'T YOU QUIT.

Life is strange with it's twist and turns,
as every one of us sometimes learns;
Any many a person has given up,
when he might have captured the victor's cup.
And he learned to late when the night came down,
how close he was to the golden crown.

So when cares are pressing you down a bit;
rest if you must, but DON'T YOU QUIT.

Bobby, you're closer every day to that golden crown. DON'T QUIT.

Posted by: Kim at July 26, 2006 11:11 PM

The following is another poem by Mary C, also posted in yesterday's comments:

A Poem for Barbaro, with Love

Bathed in the balm of love
Ascending and transcendent
Rare and magnificant Creature
Blessing to the world
Adored and revered
Running in spirit with us
One heart, four hooves, uniting many.

Good morning, Bobby and all!! My server has been down since 3pm yesterday and I've been going crazy! lol
Been trying to catch up on messages and there seems to be a bit of negative energy and that's BAD for Bobby.
Let's make sure we keep filling this place with love and positive thoughts because that's what our boy needs...not doubt and nasty negativity!

I hope Bobby had another good night and all's well this morning. Waiting in anticipation for those three magic words! :-)

Feel the love, Bobby ;-)

Morning, all. Re-posting what I said at the tail end of the last batch.

Bottom line re horse slaughter ban opposition, IMO, we (supporters of slaughter ban) MUST DEMONSTRATE availability of forever homes (adoptions, proper shelters) for numbers comparable to numbers currently being slaughtered.

Meanwhile - since the vote has been [apparently] postponed until September, everybody who can and wants to do something should GO TO THE SALES and OUTBID THE KILLERS. Consult with existing shelters, offer to cover expense if they provide room and care.

Longrange, the proponents of the ban (US) have to show where 90,000 horses annually would otherwise go. MANY WILL BE USEFUL AND ADOPTABLE. Those who aren't, must find other forever homes.

I suggest all the shelters rally and volunteer to offer homes if $ can be provided, and that people who can, pledge to support a horse - much like one of our posters is doing at a shelter now. (Is it Jeannette Cav?)

Private boarding stables could volunteer a stall or two, for fostering prior to adoption, or even for companion ["unusable") horses as forever homes, with various boarders taking turns to tend to their needs.

THIS IS NOT A PIPE DREAM, it could come to pass.

Unless/until we can show that the horse community will take care of its own, it is entirely possible that the Powers That Be in DC will keep the status quo.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO? What I just said. I truly believe that's what has to be done, in the long run. SOMEBODY RUN WITH THIS PLEASE!

But what do I know? I'm just a half-baked Kosher Ham from Hammond, not far from Gary; And I used to ride a horse named Hairy . . .

HOPE PEACE LOVE - CJ the craziest cat lady (Blackie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

Posted by: C. Jaffe at July 27, 2006 10:48 AM

C. Jaffe,

Thank you for the information. I hadn't heard about the requirement to show where 90,000 horses could be placed on an annual basis.

C.J.: A horse sanctuary that someone posted yesterday had a link on it to the DORIS DAY ANIMAL LEAGUE, which has a brochure/info that can be ordered through them about setting up your own sanctuary. The site is:

http://www.ddal.org/pubs/

I, too, am horrified upon learning about all this. What does it cost to sponsor a horse? Does one commit for life? (the only reason I ask is b/c I'm a single mom of a 2-yr old & if I can't sponsor long-term, which I would like to do, I can at least make donations.)

Also, I saw something on TV yesterday evening & wondered if it involves the slaughter house; maybe someone can respond to this: the news yesterday showed hundred of ponies doing some sort of river crossing in VA and then the commentator said that the horses will then be AUCTIONED in MD & the money given to charities. The horses who are not sold will be allowed to run free for a year, then next year the same river crosssing to raise money, auction, etc.

Is this TOO an auction whereby some of these ponies will be bought by killers? Or is this a separate type of auction that screens its purchasers? Do any horse people in VA or MD know what I'm talking about?

Posted by: Loretta at July 27, 2006 11:30 AM

Loretta,

I'm not sure but you could be talking about the wild horses of Chicoteague (spelling?). I don't remember the whole story but I did see them once. I believe it's near Ocean City, Md. They do an annual swim across the bay. I didn't know about the auction and those who bid there. I always assumed it would be people who wanted to keep one for a pet. It's a big tourist attraction in that area. I don't think they'd want the bad publicity that would result from buyers who took the horses to be slaughtered, but of course, I could be wrong about that.

Good morning Barbaro-

I hope your day is full of peace
and healing.
Everyone here is pulling for you !

Great day everyone-
Christian

p.s. Loretta-

That's the wild pony crossing in Assateague, Va.
For many years, they have rounded up the wild
ponies (on the last Thursday in July) descended from Spanish shipwrecks, drove them across the water to Chincoteague and auctioned them off to support the local fire department. Assateague is a tiny island and it helps thin the heard.
Ever heard of Marguarite Henry' books about
"Misty of Chincoteague?

Posted by: Christian at July 27, 2006 11:46 AM

p.p.s.-

The adoptors have to apply, pay a fee and are vetted carefully. I feel pretty confident it's a legit
adoption process.

Since Barbaro will be walking out of New Bolton just in time for Christmas, I thought the following somg would be appropriate. It is from my all time favorite; "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". Hope a little levity brings a smile to your face :)

Put One Foot in Front of the Other

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

You never will get where you’re going
If you never get up on your feet
Come on, there’s a good tail wind blowing
A fast walking man (horse) is hard to beat

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

If you want to change your direction
If your time of life is at hand
Well don’t be the rule be the exception
A good way to start is to stand

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

If I want to change the reflection
I see in the mirror each morn
You mean that it's just my election
To vote for a chance to be reborn.

Such amazingly beautiful poetry this morning. Thanks for sharing them with us, Tim.

In our nightly prayer vigil for Barbaro the night before last, a dear friend, who is a Lay Minister, graced us in joining us to say a prayer that she wrote. Her name is Lorrie. I would like to share that prayer here:
Our Dear Lord,Keep your beautiful creation, Barbaro, close in your heart as we are. Please, we ask your perfect will in his future.

He is a strong and gallant animal and you can see the love of life in his eyes.

Give him the courage and strength to endure this healing. Let him feel the prayers of this group and all those that are giving him support and hope.

Be with his doctors and family and everyone who loves and admires him as he progresses on his way to health.
We ask this in your name dear Lord.

Amen

For those who are on AOL, please do join us at 7:00PM each evening in this room on AOL.

Another new day and another good report, how could we ask for better right now.

Are there any pictures where our Bobby is anything other than gorgeous? Looked at the newest pictures and his personality, grace and strong character show in every picture. His expressions are priceless. Can't wait to see the newesrt ones later today.

Our dearest boy, face the day with positive vibes and know that lots of love and support surrounds you. If Dr. Dean changes your other cast today, you know what to do. Just relax in your sling and nicker at the cute nurses. You know you have everyone's full attention.

Alex, our gratitude to you, Tim, Michael, Peter, Dr. Kathy and all other lovers of Bobby continues. I'm addicted to this site and to making sure that I stick close to the Special One in thought and heart until he leaves NBC.

Enjoy the day Everyone.

Good Morning, Barbaromaniacs!

ACN is what helps to start my day out on a cheerful note.

All these prayers for our Sweet Bobby J bring tears to my eyes.

I read this morning about an energy healer out on the West Coast who is offering a free distant healing session using something very similar to Reiki - the site is qigongenergyhealing.com. I've already sent in 2 e-mails - one for my immediate family and one for Barbaro...he's covered. The session takes place on 8/2/06 at 10 p.m. EDT. So everybody at NBC, Barbaro may have a deeper sleep that night. Gotta cover all our bases.

Tim, Alex, again thank you for this site.

Gotta go clean and get ready to have lunch with a dear friend who is another enlightened soul.

We're due to have some very hot weather here in Chester County over the next few days. For those of you in the heat, drink plenty of water, make sure your pets are safe and also have plenty of water. I know our B and the other animals at NBC are well taken care of...to all the animals who are healing (I'm thinking of Walter and China, and any others I may have forgotten), just rest and let the healing take place.

When you sit back for a minute and ponder life -

do you all realize how beautiful all of you are????

Sweet B, have a wonderful day. Keep doing what you are doing, be VERY nice to Dr. R. and just take it one day at a time.

Healing to all,
Lyn Gilbert

Jo in the UK,

I, too, am having such a difficult time with the slaughter issue. After working with Windy and Stormy, and riding dear, patient Tubo the other day, I can't for the life of me understand why some people let such cruelty happen. Its bad enough there are areas of the world where people live in war zones. But the cruelty to animals is something I just don't understand. I'm not a campaigner - I can't stay calm while discussing something like this so I defer to those who have the abililty to work this issue publicly and I support their efforts and hard work to save these horses.

This is such a time of transformation and change in so many areas. I'm just thankful there are people both on this site and in other walks of life who are working in ways to make this world a better place to live.

Take care, everybody.

Healing to all,
Lyn Gilbert

Good Morning Team Barbaro,

Praying for another good day ahead for our boy after another restful night. This morning's theme seems to be poetry - I don't have poem, but here are some famous quotes for our beloved horse that are special to me.

There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man. (Winston Churchill)

A lovely horse is always an experience.... It is an emotional experience of the kind that is spoiled by words. (Beryl Markham)

In riding a horse, we borrow freedom. (Helen Thompson)

God forbid that I should go to any heaven in which there are no horses. (RB Cunningham Grahame)

You're the same as me...I get too emotional and angry where animal cruelty is concerned, and this goes way beyond cruelty! I work with kids and every day I'm trying to get the message through to them that every living thing, even the tiniest of them, has feelings and a right to live on this planet with us. I don't know how these people can do what they're doing to these beautiful animals and sleep at night.
All I can do is be supoportive in any way I can, but if I get too involved I'd end up behind bars...which is where these monsters should be!!

Close your ears, Bobby...you just concentrate on getting better! XOXOX

Good Morning Ya'll,

Just wanted to share something I came across recently. I picked up a new publication here in the ATL about gracious living etc. and on the the last page is a picture. The picture shows a pair of french doors and just inside the doors is a big beautiful yellow Lab. He is peering out of the window with the look of "I really want to go out there." Underneath the picture is this:

"Animals are reliable, many full of love, true in their affections, predictable in their actions, grateful and loyal. Difficult standards for people to live up to."

Alfred Montapert

Something we get to witness from afar everyday. His name is Barbaro.

Everyone have a terrific Thursday.

BTW, UPenn has hot weather tips for taking care of our pets during the hot weather...check it out.

Jo, I'd end up behind bars too because I'd abandon any peacefulness and come out swinging if anybody tried to tell me "they're just animals". That would be MY line in the sand.

You are doing wonderful work with your kids - instilling a sense of the sacredness of life. Keep doing it.

Gotta go, everybody. Will be back on later this afternoon.

I, like you, don't have much money to spare. I lost my job of 18 years and am still trying to find something.

However, I found that there are things that people like us can do that are not that expensive. Exceller Fund allows you to sponsor a horse for $15/month. It is a committment but, at least, doesn't require a large outlay of cash.
You can go to www.excellerfund.org and find out more. I'm pretty sure that some of the others have a structure that allows people like us to be involved.

Happy news, another comfortable night for our wonderful Barbaro!!

Also, remember if anyone can watch, the hearings are this morning at 9:30 http://agriculture.house.gov/hearings/schedule.html

Maybe hearing some of the arguments against the bill will help us know what areas we need to focus on.

And, last but not least, reminder about DebraWI's horse Bond Beauty. She's in the 10th race at River Downs today. Scheduled for 4:05PM est.

Hope you all have a wonderful and peaceful day

"Animals are reliable, many full of love, true in their affections, predictable in their actions, grateful and loyal. Difficult standards for people to live up to."

May I add the following thought. Animals, the four-leggeds, don't try or pretend to be something they're not. Being the real thing is what they're about. What you see is what you get. No wonder we crave and value their company and companionship.

Thanks for sharing that quote, Donna.

Saw this article on "Ban on horse slaughter gets second chance" House panel to vote on revamped measure

Not sure if it was already posted...

http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060726/BUSINESS/607260488/1003

WASHINGTON — Congress didn't stop the annual slaughter of some 90,000 horses the first time it tried, but lawmakers are back now with a proposed permanent ban they believe is loophole-proof.

Today the House Energy and Commerce Committee will vote on a bill, sponsored by Rep. Ed Whitfield of Kentucky and others, to bar horse slaughter for human consumption. The House Agriculture Committee is scheduled to consider the measure tomorrow.

As a preamble to those decisions, the energy panel's commerce, trade and consumer protection subcommittee held hearings on the bill yesterday. Lawmakers, horse organizations, veterinarians and animal-rights advocates squared off over whether foreign-owned plants in the United States should be producing a meat few Americans eat. Most of the meat is exported to Europe and Japan.

"Can we imagine Barbaro being sent to slaughter?" asked Russell Williams, vice chairman of the American Horse Council, referring to this year's injured Kentucky Derby winner. "And if not Barbaro, why any other horse?"

Williams, who said he was speaking for himself and not the council, said "slaughter is not a humane solution to anything."

But opponents of the ban -- including the slaughterhouses, two in Texas and one in Illinois, that process the animals -- said the bill would create a glut of unwanted horses and hit the nation's taxpayers with up to $130 million in annual costs of care.

"This draconian legislation will have far-reaching and significant detrimental effects for horses, horse owners and the … agricultural sector," said Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., chairman of the agriculture panel.

Congress last year approved a provision in a spending bill aimed at stopping horse slaughter for food, eliminating funding for inspectors at the horse slaughterhouses for a year. But despite congressional objections, the Department of Agriculture allowed the industry to pay for the inspectors so horse slaughter could continue.

Whitfield and a co-sponsor, Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., said in interviews that their bill did not allow for any ambiguities.

The measure would prohibit "the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possession, purchasing, selling or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption."

Whitfield said worries about what would happen to horses that couldn't be taken to slaughter were overblown.

A dozen years ago, he said, 329,000 horses were slaughtered in year, compared with 85,000 to 90,000 last year.

"I don't buy the argument that going from 85,000 to zero, the whole country would be covered up with horses," said Whitfield, R-1st District. In any case, he said, breeders needed to take responsibility for reducing the number of foals.

"I guess it's free trade," Dr. Douglas Corey said to a congressman who asked why so many horses are bred each year.

Corey, president-elect of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, dismissed polls that show that large majorities of the public oppose horse slaughter.

"The general public does not know equine," he said.

But Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens said horse slaughter "is a black eye on our state and our nation that demands action."

"This is all about making money. The kill plants are here in the United States to make money for people in Europe."

Letter to your newspaper

Yesterday I posted this letter, which I sent to my local paper because it did not cover the slaughter hearings this week. Several people found it helpful, and one suggested that it might inspire us all to do a letter-writing campaign to newspapers providing inadequate coverage. I am repeating it here because I am going out of town today, and I wanted to make sure you all have it. Here it is, with yesterday's intro:

MARILYN'S LETTER

Here is the suggestion for coverage which I just emailed to the editors of my city paper. Anyone is welcome to copy and use it -- just note that you might have to rewrite the bits about California. Also, don't forget to remove the quotation marks...included here so that you all don't think I'm talking to you...Best to send these letters today while yesterday's hearing is still current news.

"I am disappointed by the lack of coverage of H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, which would prohibit the shipping, receiving, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses to be slaughtered for human consumption.. Hearings on this bill are being held before the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection."

"Decades ago, Americans were outraged to learn that horsemeat was an ingredient in pet food. Ultimately, this use of horsemeat was banned due to public outcry."

"Now, many Americans do not realize that three foreign-owned companies on American soil are slaughtering American horses and sending horsemeat to Europe and Asia for human consumption."

"Ninety-two percent of the slaughtered horses are young and in good shape, and include former racehorses, recreational horses, etc. Horses sold at action are often purchased by slaughterhouse agents, unbeknownst to the former owners. Stolen horses and horses adopted under false pretenses often end up in slaughterhouses as well."

"Most horses in the United States are not raised as "livestock"; they have known and trusted humans on a one-to-one basis. They are then torn away from secure surroundings and transported in terrible conditions. The slaughter is often painful and terrifying, despite ostensible safeguards."

"Although Californians banned horse slaughter for human consumption in 1998, it would be an even greater step forward if federal legislation were to end this practice nationwide. I would welcome local coverage of this issue, and I doubt that I am alone in this. Please see http://www.horse-protection.org/info.php?id=9
and http://www.horse-protection.org/info.php?id=14 for background information."

"Thank you."

"Another comfortable night." That is such good news!

Mike Rea had a much better day yesterday - he WALKED!

(However, I think he needs protection energy sent his way as one of the night nurses is very nasty to him - she has a record of this - and upsets him.)

Let us hope for a good healing day for Bobby and Mike!

Again, how grateful I am for reading those positive words of "another good night " for sweet Barbaro. The newest photos are just wonderful;it seems that every photo of this creature captures his majesty, nobility, grace and beauty, which seems to touch everyone who views them. I now have a photo of him on my desktop screen, along with my grandson, so I start my day looking at two favorites!
I thank this site for picking out the two great poems, so fitting to apply for our champion Barbaro.
For all those interested in connecting to issues of horse slaughter or any other kind of animal abuse, you can log onto "www.aspca.com" website which provides information on all the bills before Congress regarding animal rights. They give you the links to send a message to your congressman and senators, to make your voice heard. I have been involved on this site for awhile and it is gratifying to feel you have a say.
Cheer for Barbaro--the fight goes on!

How can people slaughter horses? There are musings on this topic on today's board.

Follow the money!

Susan H, I hope you don't mind my reposting your post from last night on this topic. Few people saw it, and it is enormously important:

"On the AVMA (Amer Vet Med Assn) support of horse slaughter... follow the money. Premarin mares & foals are sold off. Big part of the supply, these grand ladies and their young. Wyeth (premarin pharmeceutical Corporation) gives OODLES OF MONEY of money to VET schools including CSU. AVMA Bought & paid for? You decide. Listen to the AVMA mouthpieces, and follow the money."

"OK Let's follow the $$ northward. Lot of Premarin produced in Canada, so lots of Premarin mares cast off. 49 out of 50 of the boy foals and most of the females sold to kill buyers at 2-4 months of age. To Canadian slaughter houses. [which is why my rep John Sweeney put TRANSPORT in HR 857]"

"This is IMPORTANT: Current favorite breed for Premarin mares? Biggest urine production and least, you know, protest? One Half Quarter horse, one half draft horse. BINGO, that brings in the... (drum roll) Quarter Horse Association. This is the tip of the iceberg, the twisted money trail that explains the mouthpieces we saw testify against HR 857 yesterday. I am not the least discouraged. I don't personally care how much $$ bought off who. 80 percent of the American people want to end this, and this is an election year. Keep the high beams on this baby and don't let up."

"Bobby, as God is our witness, we're gonna put a stop to the slaughter of American horses, donkeys, ponies and mules in 2006. We're gonna do it for you. -- Susan in Saratoga"

Posted by: Susan H at July 27, 2006 05:18 AM

Susan H, thank you so much for that extremely important post. I hope many of us will read it today.

Okay, I'm out. I will be back sometime next week and will try to go online in my mom's neighborhood now and then. I will miss you all.

Question:
I would really like to develop a better understanding of what life is like for a Thoroughbred Horse. Is there a certain book that I could read which would give me the insight as to what is involved in a horse's training & development from birth until they race?
Last week a list of good horse books was developed and I am in the process of reading through that list! Will I get this insight as I read about specific horses? Or is there a good book that helps with the basic understanding of what is involved for horses to develop into racing that is not specific to one horse?
Thanks!

He is a horse owner (Belgians...which I find ironic)...and says owners need a way to dispose of horses that are unwanted or unsound..."Suppose we passed a law that dairy cattle could not be slaughtered...there would be thousands and thousands of them...congress should not remove this meat supply...calls these horses "unusable and unwanted..."

Posted by: Pamela at July 27, 2006 2:55 PM

Calls slaughter an "orderly market for disposal of these animal" Keeps siting expense...refers to
"slippery slope" we would travel down should we not allow this...

"No bigger horse lover then I"???? "Slippery slope"?

Dr. Lindz (sp) equine vet, horseman...speaking on behalf of AAEP...says most horse vets oppose the bill...horses "processed" at these plants are treated humanely....Sites old age, LAMENESS...lowest valued horses on market...(I must say that this contridicts the previous testimony that most slaughtered horses are young and fit)...Average cost per year is $1800 per yr...Ban here doesn't prevent processing in neighboring countries...without oversite...Really is pitching economics of situation...Also says these horses would have to travel greater distance
to die...
He witnessed the process...said horses were not frightened or abused during process..."Bolt" is used to put horse down...Says this is best alternative until horse industry comes up with better answer...

Posted by: Pamela at July 27, 2006 3:04 PM

The poem posted by Mary C really "says" it...So many people united by love and concern for Barbaro. His owners are showing such great strength of love and character in their wholehearted support of a horse that too many in the racing industry would have given up on and written off as "useless"(for racing or breeding).
Horses like Ferdinand, Excellor, and many more are sold to overseas buyers, used up, and eventually slautered.
I would hope that the grace of Barbaro's owners would inspire more owners in the racing industry, to care more about what happens to their horses AFTER they have stopped racing, for ANY reason...and NEVER sell them to someone from an overseas country that has a taste for horsemeat.
Bago is going to Japan, this year. Perhaps he is there even now. Pray for him and others too.
Even with his terrible injury, "our" lovely and courageous Barbaro is truely one of the lucky ones.

Loretta,

With all due respect, please, please stop.

Since the beginning, you have told us that we're not allowed to think or write negative thoughts. You've told us how we are to conduct our vigils. And on and on and on.

Now you say we're not allowed to talk, write, think, read, or watch anything about Ruffian. Apparently, saying or even thinking anything about Ruffian will somehow result in harm to Barbaro. You said you "don't even want to see her name." By extension, I guess this means we also can't think, read, or write anything about Secretariat, because his death resulted from laminitis; or Black Gold, Prairie Bayou, Go For Wand, or any other courageous soul who broke a leg and died; or even Seabiscuit, because, well heck, he's dead!

That's enough. My initial reaction to your latest mandate was the gutteral and relatively juvenile thought, "You're not the boss of me." But on a deeper (and more adult) level, you simply have no right to tell me or anyone else here what we can think or write about. Maybe thinking of Ruffian (yep, there's that name you didn't want to see) somehow makes you think negative thoughts about Bobby. But my thoughts about Ruffian are that she was one of the most beautiful and best horses ever to look through a bridle, and that it's a shame she isn't around now to benefit from the lessons we learned as a result of her tragic end. I also think that I'm glad she and others like her (did you know that both her sire and dam died the same way, shortly after Ruffian, because they thrashed about after surgery and broke bones?) didn't die in vain, because we learned something about how to make recovery easier for injured horses. Ruffian. It's a beautiful name and I'm sorry it's one you can't be bothered with.

I've also had it to here with your disagreement with everyone else's beliefs on the Bible and God and nearly everything else. You don't want anyone to imply that you're wrong about anything and you make a point of responding to EVERY SINGLE POST that even mentions your name, but you can't let anyone else have their own beliefs and you absolutely have to have the final word. Someone disagreed with your statement that "God ONLY brings healing, not death," and you jumped all over that person. Maybe I don't know as much about God as you do, but I've read the Old Testament and God did bring death in some of those stories (the great flood comes to mind).

And you also say that Barbaro's fate is NOT in Dr. Richardson's hands, it is TOTALLY in God's hands. I guess that means if anything bad happens, then God will be responsible? Believe me, I have no thought that Bobby will do anything other than recover, but it seems like you're a tad inconsistent.

I know that when you read this I'll get a long and nasty response, and your standard statement that I should simply scroll through your posts if I don't like what you're saying. But I swear, I am getting carpal tunnel syndrome just trying to scroll through all of your posts because they all result in a band width explosion (i.e., they're LONG). And if that's the way you feel, you can just scroll past this one and let it go. I mean, Jesus did say something about turning the other cheek. But you can't seem to let anything go.

I want to make one thing absolutely clear. I have zero, ZERO problem with the religiousity of any of your posts. You have the right to your beliefs just like I and all the rest of us do. What I have a problem with is the pompous and self-centered nature of all of your posts. EVERYTHING is about you, and nobody else can be right. I've let it slide for a long time, but the comment about Ruffian (there it is again!) was the straw that broke the camel's back, and I just couldn't let that one go.

So you think and write about what you want to, and let the rest of us do likewise. All of us here are thinking positively for Bobby, and you have no right to even imply that we're not simply because we talk about some of our past heroes.

I apologize to everyone. I just couldn't take it any more. Sorry.

I think that same vet, Dr. Lindz (?) just admitted that the slaughter isn't an ideal solution, but that it's an "acceptable option" until we find a different alternative. He said that it will take time to solve the problem, just as it has w/ dogs and cats...interesting...

Like Pam said, the opposition to HR 503 is citing economics as their primary reason for opposition. The panel has also repeatedly said that the bill doesn't provide any solutions for what to do with the unwanted horses, doesn't provide any solutions, and that it is motivated by emotion, and not fact..."well-intentioned but ill-informed"

Was browsing on http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/index and saw 2 Jay Cronley links that were interesting:

The first one was: Let's err on the side of safe
and
the 2nd was: 49 great things about horse racing (some samples below)

4. Surprisingly few people keel over dead at the track.
5. Losers pay the winners.
27. Horse race movies are always uplifting.
28. British announcers have a way of elevating the moment so that you might think: Hey, this ain’t that bad a way to spend a Wednesday night by yourself.
29. Big-time jockey's wives are usually something statuesque.
32. The most eerily moving winner's circle photo I ever saw included the horse, the jockey, the trainer, and not another person.
37. There are no advertising stickers on a horse's rump.

All my best healing vibes and wishes to you, Barbaro. Love,

Finally back to cyberspaceland to read today's wonderful report - Another Comfortable Night. Way to go! Now, to concentrate on hapless horses who don't have owners like the Jacksons.

Janice from Florida - that isn't a "requirement" as such (showing that the horse community can/will assume responsibility for the approx. 90,000 horses a year who are currrently being slaughtered in the US for export overseas), but based on my take on what was said at the Hearing yesterday (per reports), that is an IMO as to what has to be demonstrated in order for the respective slaughter ban bills to prevail in the House and in the Senate. The ONLY rational opposition to the slaughter ban is the cry, "what will happen to ALL THOSE HORSES" - and IMO the most likely way to overcome that opposition is along the lines of what I said in my post.

From what Janice said, she perceived it as some kind of legislative requirement or something, and I just wanted to clarify that it is an "IMO" kind of thing. (btw Haven't seen what anyone else might have said vis-a-vis my comment; once I saw Janice's post I rushed to reply.)

We'd have to follow his money trail to see

Posted by: Wendy in Colorado at July 27, 2006 3:29 PM

So if a horse becomes "unruly," we have to slaughter it?

I can't even listen to this stuff. I am stunned that someone from the AQHA or any other horse association would say such things. They don't freaking deserve to have horses, much less run organizations related to horses.

Posted by: Kenyatta at July 27, 2006 3:30 PM

Hang in there all:
At these hearings, they often schedule one panel of anti legislation to speak and then the next panel they listen to will be all pro legislation...
This is hard to listen to...
voices all back-to-back for horse slaughter
Hopefully the next panel will represent our thoughts & beliefs........
Heck, will represent the Horses!!!
jan

Says horses will be left to starve to death...
unless they are slaughtered...once again...$$$$$....this speaker (rancher) says bill is based on EMOTION not FACTS...bunches horses
into LIVESTOCK category such as cattle, etc...
Leaving laws in the hands of EMOTIONAL PEOPLE is a "SLIPPERY SLOPE!"

Great news the cast changes were yesterday and they went good. They always make ya just a little nervous ya know. But they went ok that is just great. It is so much better for Bobby to not have to be put completely under so very much better for him. From yesterdays update from New Bolton Dr. R seemed very pleased with everything. Things seem really positive again for our Barbaro. Thats a good thing.

Thanks so much for these updates they are a huge help to us anxious nervous types like me who worry alot.

Bobby is a very smart horse and very adaptable they have said that. That is all a good thing.

Says he represents the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF HORSE OWNERS! Says this is BIG BUSINESS...once again plays the "I love horses, but..." speech...
Compares slaughter of horses to slaughter of chicken, cattle...even fish...says animals that give up their lives for us for our consumtion should be considered as a food sourch...no more...
Says people are hacking into COMMONHORSESENSE website to dispute his position...he says this is against the law...(don't you feel sorry for this poor PRO SLAUGHTER guy...) Says accidents do happen in processing...but that is just too bad...

Posted by: Pamela at July 27, 2006 3:36 PM

The poem posted by Mary C really "says" it...So many people united by love and concern for Barbaro. His owners are showing such great strength of love and character in their wholehearted support of a horse that too many in the racing industry would have given up on and written off as "useless"(for racing or breeding).
Horses like Ferdinand, Excellor, and many more are sold to overseas buyers, used up, and eventually slautered.
I would hope that the grace of Barbaro's owners would inspire more owners in the racing industry, to care more about what happens to their horses AFTER they have stopped racing, for ANY reason...and NEVER sell them to someone from an overseas country that has a taste for horses as food.
Bago is going to Japan, this year. Perhaps he is there even now. Pray for him and others too.
Even with his terrible injury, "our" lovely and courageous Barbaro is truely one of the lucky ones.

Hi, Team Barbaro!

Doing the cast change(s) in the sling is a stroke of genius. Keeps our B comfy while the drs. do their healing work. Does anybody know if there is some sort of anesthesia/sedation for B when his cast is changed in the sling or is he fully conscious?

To those following the hearings, keep up the postings. It keeps us aware of where our politicians stand. It kills me to hear intelligent people reduce horses to mere things that can be disposed of. Its too bad we didn't have enough time to arrange to bus ourselves down there to attend the hearings - or at least peacefully protest. Think of the coverage a protest could have provided.

am leaving and will be back later this afternoon. Peace, everybody.

Healing to all,

Finishing the lobbying thought, IMHO we need to make ourselves highly visible from a humanitarian and economic united front. Newspaper articles. Letters to key Congressman, not just yours. Say you represent the majority opinion. We can find homes for these horses too, but my gut says here are the kickoff talking points:

1. 80% of the voters want this to stop 2. The $$ goes overseas (all 3 US kill shops owned by 1 Belgian entrepreneur) 3. The meat doesn't feed Americans. 4. Kill buyers hide their intentions, and horse owners do NOT make informed decisions. 5. Stolen horses = big time victims. Horse stealing went down 37% or 38% in CA after they passed a no-slaughter bill. Proof positive of what's been going on here.

This smarmy industry survives for one reason: It's a secret. It survives, like mildew, in dark, damp areas with no circulation. The more light we shine on it, the more public awareness, the more we move the energy, dispassionately, the better. The less we look like radical animal rights people the better -- stick with the facts and the momentum of public opinion = revolted by this. Trust me, politicians don't want to look like killers of Black Beauty, or the summer camp pony, not in an election year. The opponents to this are grasping at straws in their logic, but they do have one thing: Millions of $$ in political contributions to protect their profits.

People, this is an election year. Am I worried? Not in the least. Rule # 1 & Rule #2 in my post above(hee hee) are our very best friends. Congress won't forget its re-election, and we have everything we need to pull this off in 2006. Let's 1)set the tone for success and 2)get busy

-- cheers, Susan in Saratoga

PS I'll get back to love and light after I post this... my sense is warrior Bobby is kicking up his heels.. both hind legs... with the passion of our commitment to this important issue.

I am over this...it is all PRO SLAUGHTER NO REBUTTAL NO REBUKE...Same old tired arguements...
Says only old, lame or unrulely horses are slaughtered...A FACT NOT BORN OUT BY STATISTICS....

Posted by: Pamela at July 27, 2006 3:44 PM

My thing about the people talking about cattle/pigs/chickens etc. being compared to the horses slaughtered, is---those animals are typically raised to be brought to slaughter in the USA. It is truly no less deplorable in nature, although I am not a vegan, I can understand being one, and why. These other "stock" animals are and will always be raised here for food for the masses. If the French, Japanese, and other countries want to ea the horse meat, why are US companies, and the FDA approving the sales, and deaths of these companion animals. As I have said in my letters to the Senators, would you eat your children's cat or dog? No, they were not raised for that purpose, neither was the horse. I need to stop, I am getting mad. This crap about the horses being old, lame and ets. is a phallacy, they steal, by hook, by crook to get these horses for slaughter. They buy them for $400 then sell the meat for $2500--ridiculous.

So glad to hear the casts were changed and everything still OK. Hooray again!

And glad to hear that Committee is meeting again on HR 503 - thought t was all over until September. Don't stop bothering your legislators, and making plans to save horses in other ways (like sponsorship at a shelter) or doing whatever you can do.

None of my horses has ever been livestock, either. That's the ultimate step, you know, to get Horses and other Equines (don't forget donkeys and mules) declared NOT livestock as a matter of law; it will change how they are viewed and regulated.

Pamela

As hard as it is to listen to, this gives us an idea of what issues need to be addressed to get this passed.
Don't stop listening....you are the BEST reporter. I can't do it as well as you

These people should be forced to have a bumper sticker on their car that says

" I NEVER MET A HORSE I DIDN'T LIKE....TO EAT!"

I know everyone is interested in the horse bill, I am too, but is it right to clutter this site with a constant chatter of it. LETS not forget what this site was built for and TIM AND ALEX intended it to be... Were all concerned about the slaughter bill, BUT if we clog this area too much we may not have it much longer...Im not trying to upset anyone, but maybe limiting posts regarding that may be a good idea in the long run...

First of all Karen thank you for sending pizza to the KF folks! That was so nice!

Susan H. do you mind me using your points in a letter to my editor. I am so mad!!

Jen I totally agree. My horse is my best friend!!!!

Kenyatta, you have nothing to be sorry for. You wrote what I am sure many of us have been thinking. I also want to add, that negative thoughts IMHO (haha - as if I were ever H) only harm the thinker and possible their hapless dependents if any, and certainly not anything in the outside world. May as well worry about voodoo. Think away, no bridges will move.
