Barbaro Updates: 24

updates are now here.

Update 330: I am expanding the 'contact us' page to include any organization important to Barbaro's recovery. If you would like contact information added, please include it in the comments and I will make the appropriate additions.

Racing tomorrow (saturday) looks exciting. Red Aspen is in at Philadelphia Park (3:50 pm), Sweet Talker (Graham Motion) is racing in the Diana and the three year olds continue in the Jim Dandy. The latter two races are from Saratoga and will be televised on ESPN. If anyone is at the races, feel free to provide a report in the comments so we can all enjoy!

Update 329: New Bolton's press release (received an e-mail of the release, will add link later):

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to be stable after another comfortable night according to Chief of Surgery Dean Richardson. His right hind leg cast was changed late Wednesday. "We took new radiographs, and they look good," said Dr. Richardson. "No problems were evident." In addition, the modified foot cast on Barbaro's left hind foot, which has laminitis, is changed daily so the foot can be treated and watched for signs of infection.

"Barbaro has a strong appetite, and he has been enjoying hand-picked grass and 'healthy snacks' daily," said Dr. Richardson.

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, August 1, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 328: The Thoroughbredtimes has a very encouraging article: Encouraging sign: Barbaro's hoof regrowing. The following are a couple of excerpts, but PLEASE read it all:

Although he described Barbaro's overall condition as "very guarded," Richardson was more upbeat on Thursday night than he has been in weeks.

"We change the bandage on his left hind every day now and it's improving regularly," Richardson said. "It looks like he's starting to grow at the coronary band again. It's where the hoof grows down from. It's where he's going to have to grow a new hoof, so that was nice to see."

The article also notes progress in his right hind:

"Where the new plates were put on it actually looks very good. There were no signs of infection," Richardson said. "I was pretty happy with how the leg looked as well as how the X-rays looked, so he was put back in a fresh cast on his right hind.

Update 327: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (thursday night). I was coming onto the wood chip track this morning (inside the dirt track) and saw Michael on Messaging (overseeing some breezes) about 1/16th of a mile from the gap to the right. I was supposed to back up (jog to the left) but changed things around a little in order to get the update! Michael had heard from Dr. Richardson, who said Bobby was still lying down (good sign) when he visited this morning.
updated friday july 28, 7:15 am

Update 326: There have been a couple of issues with the site overnight. If you have had trouble posting a comment, we are looking into it. Hopefully it will be resolved very soon.

Update 325: Just spoke to Peter Brette. Bobby remained comfortable throughout the day today. Peter was unable to visit, but had heard from Michael Matz.
update thursday evening.

That's the kind of report I love to hear, thanks Alex! Bobby, please stay feeling comfortable, every day like that is one more step down that long road to recovery.

LORETTA and others:

While you're checking out Marguerite Henry's "Misty" book, I HIGHLY recommend her "King of the Wind". It is the story of the Godolphin Arabian, who very well may be the Barb ancestor of Barbaro. I literally wore out my school library's copy when I was a kid. If you can find the version illustrated by Wesley Smith, all the better.

Sweet Barbaro. I hope you'll have another good night. Rest easy, lil fella. You are loved, you are supported, you are prayed for.The road to recovery may be long, but we will walk it with you. See you in the morning, sweetie. Gina and Smokey send lotsa purrs your way..Luvya

For Barbaro:

Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of.
You might bend til you break,
Cause it's all you can take.
On your Knees you look up,
Decide you've had enough.
You get mad, you get strong
Whipe your hands, shake it off
The you STAND!

Every time you get up and get back int he RACE
One more small PIECE of you starts to fall into place

Stand: By Rascal Flatts

I sang these words with force and sharpness the day you broke down...each phrase willing you to stand after surgery and you did...keep fighting Barbaro, show that champion spirit and you will when the race...Charismatic did it and so can you!!!!!!

hey janice, i was so glad to hear the good news tonight when i got home since i had to leave early this morning. it's like being in limbo all day! glad to see you on. have a good night and will see you tomorrow morning. i have to go light my last candle before i turn in.

Heck, we jumped to 24 while I was trying to finish a post on 23!!

Loretta--You simply must, I mean MUST read the Marguriete Henry books and as Susan said, "King of the Wind"! When I was little, I played with my Breyer model horses, one of which was an Arabian like "King of the Wind". I had Barbies but didn't play with them like I did the horses. My mom sewed, like every mom did back in the 60's-70's, and I would make horse blankets out of scraps of fabric and halters out of pieces of yarn. If I ever get senile and have to live in a time from the past, I hope it is that time! Thanks for indulging my blast from the past!

HEY EVERYONE....

HEARD FROM MARY L.
She's not feeling real well and I don't know if she'll be on the site tonight.
She really had a tough time with the last round of chemo.

I told her we're all praying for her and for a good result with her PET scan tomorrow.

Also, told her if she's not up to posting, to just drop me a quick note and I'll report in for her.
I know MANY people have been concerned so I hope you all read this post.
Let's light a candle and say an extra prayer tonight

Thank you thank you thank you for Barbara Livingstone's Gallery link!! I really needed to see some pictures of a happy Barbaro after foolishly going to the breakdown pictures. I knew that what happened was bad but I wasn't prepared for that. So anyway, I'm grateful for the gallery link and I now finally have proper desktop wallpaper of beautiful Bobby...believe me I needed those happy pictures to look at!!

Just seen the latest update and I know that Bobby has had another good day, so it's time for me to say goodnight...it's gone 1.30 here.

Sleep well, Bobby...tomorrow's another day and I'll be waiting to see my three favourite words of the morning! Love you, sweetie XOXOX

Night night everybody...don't forget those candles!

Well, I'm back already to revive a grim topic--horse slaughter. Here's another argument in favor of the ban:

Japan Lifts Ban On U.S. Beef Imports
created: 7/27/2006 6:21:34 PM
updated: 7/27/2006 6:22:10 PM

By CARL FREIRE
Associated Press Writer

TOKYO (AP) -- Japan on Thursday announced the resumption of U.S. beef imports, ending a ban imposed over concerns about mad cow disease and removing a strain in relations with Washington.

The U.S. ambassador immediately welcomed the move, which reopens Japan's lucrative market to a select list of U.S. meat exporters, saying that it resolved an issue of primary importance to the United States.

"We are pleased that Japanese auditors and officials have found our process to be sound, and we are proud that our system is scientifically based and exceeds internationals standards," a statement from Ambassador Thomas Schieffer said.

The latest ban was imposed in January when Japanese inspectors checking a veal shipment found banned parts believed to be at risk for the illness. It was lifted after Japanese representatives toured U.S. facilities to ensure they met safety guidelines.

Mad cow disease -- formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE -- is a degenerative nerve disease in cattle. In humans, eating meat contaminated with BSE is linked to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, a rare and deadly nerve disease.

Health Minister Jiro Kawasaki announced the lifting of the ban after the Agriculture Ministry's mad cow advisory committee approved a resumption in imports.

"We think it is possible to guarantee safety so long as the U.S. observes its export program to Japan," Kawasaki told reporters. "We strongly hope that the U.S. will ensure compliance with the export program." However, he said Japan would renew the ban if problems arise.

Japanese inspectors on Sunday returned from a monthlong tour of 35 facilities in the United States to evaluate whether they comply with safeguards against mad cow disease.

The government and importers will inspect all shipments to ensure that dangerous parts are not included, Kawasaki said. Officials inspected only part of shipments before the import ban.

At the White House, presidential spokesman Tony Snow greeted the decision "with satisfaction."

"U.S. beef is safe. The prime minister had an opportunity to sample it during his trip to the United States on multiple occasions. And we look forward to seeing U.S. beef re-enter the Japanese marketplace," Snow said.

Japanese beef importers said Thursday there is no sign their clients are rushing to place orders.

Japan was a huge consumer of U.S. beef before December 2003, when it imposed the original ban over concerns of possible mad cow disease -- formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE -- among U.S. cattle.

The ban was lifted late last year, only to be reimposed in January after inspectors found prohibited animal parts in a veal shipment from New York.

Hi Phyllis~ we went from November of last year until now with nary a drop of rain- save one shower early in the year. I hear you. In one week, we got a foot. Mostly, that dried up. I don't know how much we've gotten this go round, but it wasn't as much. We need it, although it's rough on the cotton farmers when it comes around now.

Hi Barbaromaniacs,

It is nice to see people who are as fanatical as I am about updates and information. My co-workers are asking me how he is doing each day and I gladly give them the latest. I breathe a sigh of relief every morning and evening. I appreciate all the caregivers at NBC-they are exceptional people.

Barbaro- You are so strong and smart. You have the will and stamina to beat the odds. I wish you a good night. Dream of when you can go home and graze in green pastures.

ssshhhh, we have to whisper. I'm new here and don't want to get spanked for getting into a school debate.......then again, at FSU we learned to spell the word "GO" teeheee, just kidding sweetie.

Don't get mad folks, my commitment and focus on our Boy is complete. I'm just allowing my joy and Faith to come out.

July 13th had left me heartbroken and hopeless. Barbaro's attitude inspires me. So let's rejoice while the reports remain good. If I get too silly I have my 14 candles to back me up.
Love to all.
Good night sweet Barbaro, sleep and heal.

Have a question that I have been wanting to ask for a while. Since the post have slowed down here it is. Sorry this is coming from a non-horse person.

Why are the legs of horses taped? Did this help with Barbaro's break from being worse? I know the break is very bad;can't look at the x-ray. Gives me the shivers.

Sorry if this is insensitive, but you guys seem to know the most about horse related issues.

Posted by: Donna at July 28, 2006 2:18 AM

I don't think Barbaro will be going home with the Jackson's. If and when he gets out of NBC' he will most likley go to a breeding barn., Where I don't know. I pray he likes the girls
Where ever he gose I wil be here trying to support him.

Donna,
answered this once before,,Alex back me up.
Most times the hind legs are taped or "wrapped" for protection.
Again, I had two horses I had to wrap all fours due to swelling. I had one horse who swelled so much in her forelegs, it was an ongoing thing.
But, she was happy....hey she was the one with the goat.
Love,
Susan

I hope he likes the girls too. When I read that War Emblem didn't respond to the fillys I was confused. I thought that all stallions loved the girls - I guess not. Perhaps its like people - some don't like the opposite sex. Too bad for War Emblem - but I know our Bobby loves the girls and always will. I hope he can "mount" he will make beautiful babies.

Its time for me to go to bed and watch some TV - I say good night to all.

Bobby - I love you so much - you are in my prayers 24/7 - I hope you have a restful night - dreams about being in a green pasture - rolling around in the grass - checking out the fillys. I'll check on you in the am. XXOO and scratchies.

Hi ya'll,

I was looking at the video of Bobby as a Baby, with the Run for the Roses song on it. Do you all remember that from the other day? Well, the artist of that beautiful song is Dan Fogelberg. He is an amazing singer/songwriter, and I have loved his music for almost 30 years now.
I was checking out his website the other day after watching Bobby, and it brought me to the "grateful" site to lite a candle for Dan. Evidently, he is suffering from advanced prostate cancer, and he, too, needs some candles lit and prayers said.
Sooo...when you go to lite a candle tonite for our sweety-boy, lite one for Dan Fogelberg, too. His grouping is under DanF.
Thanx.
Mary L I am praying for you. Feel better.

And thank you ShelleyA for keeping us informed.

Donna:

Their taped for added stability. Just like me when my knees go all achy--I wear big ole knee braces. They support my knees, the kneebone etc.

Bobby mis-stepped when he broke his leg. Why? We don't know. And probably will never know.

It's funny, but I actually encourage you to look at those x-rays. You will see some horrific damage and then when you see what Dr R did to start all this healing; you will be floored. You can see the plates and the screws and how hard he worked to make things right. It's right there and you don't have to be some kind of physician to be able to read it!

Maybe I speak from when I was a kid. I remember Ruffian and it broke my heart that they had to put her down. But at the time they didn't have a choice. Between how bad her break was and her own inability to accept the cast they had no choice. And the Janney's didn't want her to suffer needlessly.

Posted by: marie at July 28, 2006 2:40 AM

RandeeB - I agree that you should not take a risk by advertising items that may not be sanctioned (legal). I know that Ernie doesn't take money for her shirts - the check goes to a charity. So maybe, it is only illegal if you profit from it.

The T-shirt I got on ebay is gorgeous, it is a painting of Barbaro, but if I had to guess, it is probably not legal - if the Jackson's have his likeness copyrighted. But it is still beautiful.

The storms have moved on, my son's/fiance's wedding plans are falling into place, my cats and I had some cuddle time on the sofa tonight, tomorrow is Stormy/Windy Reiki day and our beloved B is still doing really well. (no, I'm not being naive - but he knows exactly what he needs to do...that's good enough for me. I've been researching equine veterinary medicine over the last few days and my understanding of B's condition has deepened. I'm grateful for that knowledge, believe me.)

Life is so darn good.

now dear, Sweet B, its time to sleep tonight. Rest, heal and we'll all come back tomorrow for the latest update.

Please put me down for one bracelet.
(lyn7292001@yahoo.com)

And Rockabye Sweet Bobby J. Goodnight, sunshine.

healing to all,
Lyn Gilbert

Donna,
They kicked Katrina's ass!!! They are all fine, thank God. They live uptown where there wasn't as much water damage as in other areas. They did evacuate to Baton Rouge for about 5 months before going back to NO. They had some water, and some roof damage, but nothing compared to what 1000's of others suffered. Thanx for asking, and it's good to hear that my nephew, who I adore, will enjoy his collegate experience. Are you in school there, now? Geauxxxxx Tigers!~

Debbie:

One thing you can be sure of is that the Jackson's will make sure that Bobby is taken care of wherever he goes.

Dancinginmydreams who also broke her leg--much the same as Bobby--was suppose to go back to Claiborne (I think). It turned out the farm wasn't prepared to give her the kind of care she needed. For instance she needs to be slowed walked for 20 mins twice a day, she needs Stim care (electrostimulation)regularly--with extra treatments around the time of foaling.

Bobby hopefully will not require day to day extra care. But it will be an ongoing maintainence deal.

Just like Smarty the Jackson's may look for someplace where Bobby can meet and greet his "internet family" as well as other friends and fans.

And if he can't breed for some reason (his back legs) they'll probably have him at home.

Michael's Miracle

Posted by: Margaret at July 28, 2006 2:43 AM

Margaret,

I did see the x-ray and that is why it makes me shiver. I worked for an orthopod/sports medicine group for alittle while and still can't look at those kind of pictures. They had even worse pictures in the office.

I am glad the advancement for animal care has progressed so much and Dr. R was about to help Bobby J. I e-mailed the Director of the LSU Equine Studies program and asked them questions about the services avaliable there.(I did this after learning what was going on at NBC.)Unfortunately, LSU does not have the funds to have all the splendid things they have at NBC. They are working on that. They also communicate with NBC from time to time.

Sorry I am so chatty, but waiting for the migraine meds to kick in before retiring for the night.

Posted by: Donna at July 28, 2006 2:46 AM

Margaret,
one difference. They took Ruff...I still remember that day. and operated on her the same day.

Dr. Dean said NO WAY..wait 24 hours .Let Bobby KNOW ...I think that made all the difference in the world.

And she was the best.

Posted by: susanW at July 28, 2006 2:46 AM

PS about Dancinginmydreams:

Her owners found a farm in Kentucky that could not only take her but give her the kind of care she needs. Today she has had several foals successfully.

She has a hitch in her giddyup. The ankle that was affected by the break is swollen. But really unless you saw her close up, you didn't know her situation you couldn't tell that she isn't perfect.

I'm saying that the Jackson's will work it out where to send Bobby. He will be okay and we shouldn't worry.

Susan E: King of the Wind - I remember reading that book and loving it so - I have thought often about it over lots of years but couldn't remember the name...then you type it and it all comes back....

Here's a horse related novel that I loved: Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley - The horse characters who do a lot of narration are fabulous - so is the dewscription of life in the race horse world - (think she owns some TB's) - I just loved the horse character Justa Bob....I like horses with a sense of humor and he had one...

Bobby, here's hoping for ACN...

To Alex, Tim, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, the Jacksons, Doc R, NBC, KF and others who are part ofTeam Barbaro: thanks

I am again so thankful that you have had another comfortable day! Have a very comfy night with only the sweetest dreams and I will check in first thing in the morning. You're being such a good and brave boy Barbaro. I am so proud of you!! Goodnight Sweetheart! XXOO
Alex, Tim, Mike and Peter,
Thank you for communicating sooo well with each other especially concerning Barbaro. I feel privileged to be on the receiving end of any information that you provide. Your communication speaks volumns of your professionalism in your work day and also of the obvious friendships and respect you have for one another. Thank you with all my heart. I would love to look into Barbaro's eyes for myself and feel his energy. To be let-in on the secrets that make up Barbaro. Thank you for sharing what you know. Thank you for sharing Barbaro.
Everyone, sleep well tonight. I am praying for "another comfortable night" and a day of healing.
Hugs to all and of course, hugs AND kisses for you Barbaro.

DRF has an article about A.P. Jet who was critically injured a few months back in a stallion fight. Gold Token was killed when he ran into a tree. APJ has now fully recovered. They hand walked him and babied him for months.

Animals have a way of healing themselves, given time. That's all we need for Bobby, just a little time so that the healing process can be completed.

One more day, brick by brick, Bobby will get there. Good posts today.

Posted by: Janet at July 28, 2006 2:56 AM

Barbaro,

Time to say goodnight, everybody here seems to be getting sleepy too! Have a peaceful, healing night, do what Dr. R tells you to do and rest when you get tired. We all love you so much and are trying to stay positive and strong for you so feel free to rest your head on our shoulders anytime!

I really appreciate everyone who contributes to the treats that are sent, especially on behalf of the group. Your selflessness is admirable.

For all the banner-makers, bracelet-designers, petition-signers, candle-lighters, healers, prayer warriors, and poem-posters, thanks for all you do, you ARE making a difference!

Lurkers--Come out of the closet! Embrace your Barbaro mania!

So many posts I can't remember.

Posted by: marie at July 28, 2006 3:01 AM

Therese,

I am so glad the kick a**. There are still so many that are struggling in Louisiana and Mississippi. My brother is a contract worker for FEMA and he said I would not recognize New Orleans. There are still some unfortunate things still cropping up in the New Orleans area.As far as Mississippi, they tried to go to Gulfport on HWY 91 I think, that is what he said, but the road was still out. That was about a month or so ago. He said it is really sad.

I have been in school forever. But keep up on a daily basis.

OMG-Your nephew is in for a treat. Where to start? The Fighting Tigers in Death Valley on a Saturday night. Opportunities abound for LSU students. There are so many clubs and organizations to join, make friends and start networking for the cold cruel world of today. I hope he takes advantage of it all. Just a side note they have just released new plans for a new baseball and softball stadiums. They break ground Nov. 1.

Tell him is first visit should be to Mike the Tiger and his new habitat. Above all else please to not miss a football game in Tiger stadium.

Hope he has a good time. I could go on forever.

My '89 5.0 was sacrificed for insurance purposes in Texas(3 cars;too high)and my '99 was totaled in October after some twit took an illegal left hand turn. You are so right. I heard Jazz fest was okay. The Neville brothers did not close it down. Aaron was having asthma problems;Lionel Ritchie was the closer. Heard he did a respectable job. If I may ask, Why Green Wave baseball?

Yea, they are still having a tough time in Louisiana and in Mississippi. I read the New Orleans website and get reports from my family and friends. When I do get home it is only for a short time and can't get to the Big Easy and surrounding areas.

Just wanted to check in one last time today before it is off to bed.
I am glad to hear that Barbaro had a comfortable day today. Let's all hope and pray for a very restful, comfortable healing night tonight.

Handsome boy,
You are doing so well, being the smart boy that you are, I know you will continue to do so.
Lay down on your side and let those legs and feet heal.
Soak up all of the love and healing energy that is being sent your way day and night.
My hope is to one day see you walk out of that ICU in all of your glory, snubbing your nose at those who did not believe in your miracle.

My love and admiration for you grows all of the time. You have inspired me to fight through the tough times and rejoice in the small miracles of each new day.

Good night sweet boy. I will check on you in the morning.

Big hugs, ear scratches, nose tickles and MUCH LOVE.

Kenyatta, thank you. You are right, the last "official" Penn update had the info dated the 26th.
Barbaro certainly has a lead keel, he is always moving away the tipping point, scares us with just a momentary list, and settles back to an even keel. - He is so wonderful, he is the definition of STABILITY. I know it is not effortless for him, but he makes the difficult look so easy, Edgar never asked him to win the Derby, I guess he could feel that Bobby had already made that decision.

Good night Bobby, you rest good, now boy.

Now, so thrilled to hear about our Bobby doing so well and up for the fight! Barbaro, you are such an inspiration for so many of us, really. He has know idea, does he?

Anyway, tomorrow (Friday) can someone post who is doing bracelets, which ones and where we can put our order in with whom? Whew!

So, much happened today, that I feel left out...sorry. So, help me out, please as I want to support the funds any way I can.

Alex, as always, you are fantastic, and thank you for your updates and support. We all know you are busy, but you make time for us...Bless you!

Dr. R- well, you are the best, but then I knew that as I attended The Ohio State University, too. We alumns are all so proud of your work and continuing compassion for your profession. Good thoughts to you, your wife and son in medical school. Go Bucks! Just had to say that....

Well, must light some candles for our Bobby and all of you. So great to have met so many people who love animals.

Lisa,

Did not see Bobby race at all. When I saw the paper the next day. I was crushed. I think I saw a replay of the Derby and kinda knew about him. I hate it when any animal is hurt. I adopted a dog that had been abused and "thrown away" He was so so smart and loving.

Kudos to your high school. Need more people like that around.

Posted by: Donna at July 28, 2006 3:53 AM

Thanks for the support Cheryl. I feel like I was almost made to do something with horses although I am 30 years old and just learning. I WANT to learn though. Who knows, we all have to start small. Just like Bobby, small steps will lead to a sucessful futre.

I do have one question though. Mike c posted a commemt a long time ago about Edgar nevering haveing to ask Barbaro to run in the Kentucky Derby. If he did ask him, would that be with the whip?

Thanks

I was at opening day at Saratoga yesterday and made a sign for Edgar thanking him and it also said Saratoga believes in Barbaro! He smiled and nodded when he saw it. I felt since Belmont idiots booed him on Sunday following the Preakness that someone here needed to tell him thanks.
I also asked if they would have a Barabaro day to help the fund and that I would be willling to help and give up two Barbaro pictures. I was sure Edgar would sign them considering what it was for... The woman I spoke to was nice but the powers of Saratoga said, "no". They did the card and that was enough. I was very disappointed in that answer. I can't believe a track that could generate a ton of money for the cause would refuse.
Also for the Dancinginmydreams foals...
she has had two for sure: "Dancing Forever" a Rahy colt who has run maybe once or twice can't remember and "Remember" by Forest Wildcat. She was barren in 2005 and she was to deliver an El Prado on 3/21/06.
Keep up the good work Bobby. You are on all of our minds daily.
Also noticed a girl walking around the track with a Barbaro shirt on. :I was at opening day at Saratoga yesterday and made a sign for Edgar thanking him and it also said Saratoga believes in Barbaro!
: Thanks again Alex and Tim. I have sang your praises to the group here at Saratoga.

Lisa Leach,

Thanks for the book recommendation--I'm going on ebay to look for another old,old favorite and I'll look for yours, too.

Got all misty reading the posts from the NO area folks. Hard to believe it has been almost a year since Katrina. I will keep hoping that the people and animals of the Gulf Coast can rebuild their lives.

When I was a kid, we lived in Mobile for a few years and that's my earliest memory. I fell in love with NO during my first visit in '77 and it's always been one of my very favorite cities.
The area, and its people, are absolutely wonderful.

Thanks so much to Alex, Tim, and all who contribute to these updates. You are a Godsend!

HI ASHLEY, I'M 39 AND I'M NOT OVERLY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT HORSE RACING, BUT I DO LOVE SPORTS, THAT'S HOW I STARTED WATCHING HORSE RACING. INDIANAPOLIS IS FAIRLY CLOSE TO CHURCHILL DOWNS SO THE DERBY IS BIG FOR US HOOSIERS. I WOULD ASSUME HE MEANT THE WHIP, ALSO I'VE SEEN SOME OF THE JOCKEY'S SMACK THE HORSES A BIT (NOT HARD). I'M LEARNING THE OTHER END OF HORSE RACING WITH THE ANTI-SLAUGHTER BIT THAT'S BEEN GOING ON THIS WEEK. I'M SOMEWHAT FAMILIAR WITH IT (THANKS TO PETA), BUT NOT LIKE SOME OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS WONDERFUL GROUP.

Well, just read the insensitive comments by some guy writing for SI.com and found them upsetting. I'm so very glad to have this website that is based on people who SEE Barbaro every day and are telling us what they see with their own eyes. I know the obstacles that Barbaro is facing, but to read the daily updates and see each morning that he had another good night and then to see that he has been having one good day after another gives great hope and it is not misplaced at all. MIRACLES DO HAPPEN! Nobody takes his condition for granted, in fact, we are all praying our hearts out for him and will continue to bathe him in prayer. We love you Barbaro and are so proud of you fighting like a champion each and every day. You will make it!!!!!!!!!

I NEED TO CATCH UP WITH YOU GUYS, MY COMPUTER HAS BEEN DOWN, WHAT'S THE BIT ABOUT THE BRACELETS? I'LL READ BACK AND SEE.

Elaine,

Was that the article about the top 5 stories to follow, that said Bobby won't make it and the media shouldn't follow him except when something big happens?

That writer is a fool. If SI sees fit to follow every move by Terrell Owens, Big Ben, or the myriad other overpaid, spoiled, immature, whining, demanding human athletes...

Lost my thread there, but anyway--Bobby is worth following and supporting every day. I will put my time and energy into him, instead of salary strikes, player lockouts, free agents, bench-clearing brawls over a miscalled pitch, and other nonsense.

Posted by: Susan E. at July 28, 2006 4:51 AM

ELAINE, I READ THE SAME SI ARTICLE, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, HE'S (I THINK HIS NAME IS TIM) ONE OF THE BETTER HORSE RACING SPORTS WRITERS. THEY ARE ALL VERY JEALOUS, :>) BUT HE SEEMED TO REALLY WANT BOBBY TO WIN THE TRIPLE CROWN.

THREE CHEERS FOR BARBARO from Linda A Oregon

With all this concern for Barbaro the one thing I would wish for is that it would generate reform in the horse racing business. The other thing wished for that could come from the tragic accident this horse suffered is that we could learn to direct so much love to others in the world as well as ourselves.

Posted by: Bonnie at July 28, 2006 5:58 AM

Susan W.

I to am superstitious. When we had the national Saturday night prayer vigil. I had to be out of town so I went on the beach, my husband and I said our prayers and we lit the candle. We left it to burn on the beach cause I couldn't watch it go out. I felt so awful knowing it would go out eventually.

As for lighting the candles online, I do that because they burn for 48 hours and I light a new one every night so there is a candle always burning an I can live with that.

Thank you, Jesus, for the success of Barbaro's cast changes. Please protect him from any infection. I pray you continue to remove the L infection from his left hind foot and cause the hoof to regrow steadily and completely. I ask that his pastern and fetlock joints are fusing firmly, free of any infection. Please enable him to stand evenly on all four feet. I pray you continue to empower Dr. Richardson with your healing grace. Please give him strength and persistence. Please put wise people in his path. I pray for Barbaro's comfort and healing tonight, and ask for a happy day for him tomorrow. Please bless Roy and Gretchen Jackson and all those who love and care for him with much happiness.

I definitely can relate to you and no I did not by any means want to make you feel you should light a candle. Like I said, I am very superstitous also and I was just justifying why I light a candle.

I understand about changing your clothes and all that goes with racing. I did not own a racehorse though it is a dream of mine, but I did own a quarterhorse and when I would ride him, I wore the same "lucky" clothes being he liked to rear up with people LOL. I was lucky, we ended up racing him against our friend who was boarding him and he ran me down a highway going close to the speed a racehorse would. The more I pulled back on his reins the faster he ran. Ran me right into the woods where I got cut up pretty bad by branches. All this because a mare at the stables was in heat and he wanted her and not me LOL. We found out that he (Sunny) had a bad bite and the more I pulled the reins the more it hurt him. Needless to say, I still have that "lucky" outfit but it is unfortunately retired until another day.

Do you race? You are lucky, I am so happy for you being you are wearing "lucky" clothes.

Closest I ever been to racing was standing against the fence at the finish line, on day, I will have a racehorse hopefully and will still be right pressed against the finish line waiting.

Posted by: sharonlynn at July 28, 2006 6:26 AM

Susan, I'm not sure what you meant by "this is a Bobby site". There is such a diverse array of passionate subjects discussed here that surely one related to reform of the racing business would be welcomed. And as I see it reform would benefit so many of Barbaro's fellow creatures. I feel for him and have his best interests at heart, now I am interested in going to the source of the problem.

Bonnie -- beautiful wishes, that the love we generate here will go beyond. I'm not a physicist.. yet how could it not? The love. Go beyond. Like ripples in a pond, carrying from our hearts to Bobby, to his care givers, friends, family, and then, like the wind, on to wherever it's called. The mystery almost doesn't need to be understood, but sure enough it is making waves that will not be forgotten.

I've been visiting Mike Rea's site and offering some words of encouragement.. few guest postings there, and his family is grand about posting. Perhaps more of us could visit, carry the kidness from here to there with a few words... just an idea.

Good Morning fellow Barbaro fans! Waiting for the A.M. update!!

Are you there lou?? Like you, I jump on morning and evening. Work and other commitments prohibit me being on all day as I would like. Let's hope we get another positive report.

Janice

Posted by: Janice from Florida at July 28, 2006 9:31 AM

a couple of things:

a. we had some site problems and had to move it last night (move servers) so I apologise for any interruptions. Eliza prioritized this site over all others she is working with and it appears we are ok now...

b. the NBC press release is from wednesday, hence why there was no mention of the cast change which likely occured after the press release. i imagine todays press release will have the info. my info. came directly from michael matz and was confirmed by kathy anderson and peter brette.

c. bandages.

there are those for racing, which is a tight, elasticated material (called "vet wrap"), usually applied to the hind legs, and sometimes to the front legs. they offer support and also help prevent the horse getting its skin rubbed in its heals (we call "run down"). this occurs in dirt racing, not so much in turf racing.

there are exercise banadages, used much the same as vet wrap, but easier to work with, and reusable, vet wrap is thrown away once used.

there are standing bandages. these are applied to the horse for therepeutic purposes after exercise and remain on all day and night. most horses in training in the US have front standing bandages, some have all four.

I wish we could help you out with the rain. Here in Florida, summer is the rainy season and we usually get more than we need. It's a daily happening. The good thing - it doesn't last all day - just enough to water everything.

Janice

PS - it's nice to see our cousins across the pond following Bobby's condition too.

Posted by: Janice from Florida at July 28, 2006 10:28 AM

Janice...I've witnessed the wonderful gulley-washers in Florida and that's just what we need now, but we need a few because the ground is baked hard and cracking, and everything is struggling to survive...us Brits just aren't used to having a proper Summer! LOL

I first learned about Bobby from a friend in the US who had backed him for the Triple Crown and she was devastated when she broke the news to me about his horrific injury. And now I'm just captured by his magic like so many and my only wish right now is for him to get better.

I was wondering...do you think that
Bobby and Messaging miss each other? Just wondered if he'll be visiting when Bobby is feeling up to it.

Good Morning Alex, Barbaro & Dr. Richardson,

Alex, thank you again for taking the time to keep most of the world informed of the condition of Barbaro. It's folks like you who make it possible for us.

How are the front feet?
I know it's been asked, but here we are going into a weekend.............are they happy with the front feet?

Thank you so much Alex!!

Jo,
My gosh - you're thoughtful. I honestly hadn't thought of that issue. I would imagine Bobby might miss him. I know that stables where I go the horses form attachments. It's the neatest thing to witness - when one is away and then returns -the others start running all around and whinnying like crazy. I wish I could understand what they are saying.

gulley washers - great description!!

BTW - we LOVE LONDON. I don't know what it's like to live there, but to visit - it's wonderful!!!

Did you guys just see the Today show, they had a clip of an HUGE umbrella that flew across the track right in front of and over a group of horses in a race. OMG those horses didnt even flinch...they just kept racing. TOTALLY FREAKED THE JOCKEYS THOUGH. What is happening. Seems like once a week something weird is happening.

Good Morning Bobby, ACN!

The site being down last nite had me a little worried. But another good night last night. Yeaaaaah!!!!

Laura in key West,

How awful! I'm surprised it didn't freak the horses. The Arabian I ride spooks if she sees a blade of grass out of place.

I agree with you - what is happening? Do you know what race track it was?

Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

First thing - good morning Sweet Bobby J - hope the second thunderstorm that passed thru Chester County didn't disturb your sleep. It certainly disturbed mine (I was reading "The Horse Whisperer"). Once I put the book down, I just pictured myself in Barbaro's stable lying next to him and the two of us slipping into rest. What a picture.

Am going to light today's candles, get a massage and then work on my two other favorite horses later today - Windy and Stormy.

Jo in the UK, hang in there. I've seen the BBC pics of how parched the UK is and its breaking my heart. I love your country very much (have since I was about 9 years old...).

Mary L, hope you are feeling better...healing energy is being sent your way. (actually, I send to all the people on the site...)

I'm thrilled seeing new people come onto this site day by day. It increases the positive energy going to our sweet boy (be good and listen to Dr. R...BTW, if anybody finds out Dr. R's b'day, let me know. If its in August, he may be a Leo, like me. But with the meticulous way he did the surgery for the fractured leg, he could be a Virgo. Either way, he's one amazing dr...)

Alex, Tim, thank you again for this site. I tell people all the time that this site provides timely, accurate accounts of Barbaro's condition and healing and not to rely totally on the media. Its better to come here and get the info and its great to
