    Barbaro Updates: 26

    updates are now here.

Update 338: Bernadini was super impressive in the Jim Dandy. I am not entirely sure what he beat, but nevertheless he did not get out of third gear. Congratulations!

Update 337: Melissa sent me this poem, which included the following in her e-mail:

I've been working on this poem for some weeks but couldn't finish it after the horrible news two weeks ago. Now, after yesterday's good news, I was able to finish it. Feel free to share it with anyone including Peter, Michael, the Jacksons, Edgar Prado and all who are close to Bobby.

    poem:

    "Barbaro"
    by
    Melissa Harden

    Who wouldn't be charmed?
    By the most precious sight
    Of a foal being born
    After a long restless night

    Eyes anxiously watch
As he climbs to his feet
    Nuzzling so close
    To his mother's heartbeat

    We think of his dam
    We think of his sire
Will he have her quiet calm?
    While retaining his fire?

    Those answers are known
Only to God it is said
So we leave it to Him
As we go to our beds.

    We watch foals play games
    While amidst their peers
    Whether they'll race
    Is best left to seers.

    Then the time comes
    That all mother's hate
    He must leave her side
To be schooled at the gate

    What's with this saddle?
    Who's this on my back?
    You mean I must run
    Out here on this track.

    He continues to strengthen
    His endurance increases
    Through most careful workouts
    And frustrating breezes

    He could be the one
    If our watches don't lie
Shall we aim for the Derby?
    And give it a try

    He wins all his races
    He fills us with pride
    This is a great horse
    With luck on his side

    He then wins the Derby
    They are calling him great
    He goes to the Preakness
    And meets a cruel fate?

    In the midst of adversity
    He touches our hearts
    We see his ability
    To be patient and smart

    We admire his quiet courage
    As he endeavors to heal
    Each day we're encouraged
    By his very strong will

    There was no Triple Crown
    No jubilant mood
    But his name will resound
    When we think fortitude

    For no claim of greatness
    Ever had such a measure
    As his grace under stress
    More precious than treasure

    And his name, Barbaro
For all those who know him
    Will always mean hero
    His fame never to dim.

Sweet Talker ran a great race to just get headed in the Diana. I asked Graham about her chances on thursday. He was a little concerned with her travel schedule, but she certainly showed up today, just losing on the wire! Also, nice win for Master of Disaster at Delaware for Steve Klesaris.

Update 336: Redaspen was sixth in the stake today at Philadelphia. Perhaps she got a little tired in her first start back. Tim said Victor Molina gave her a great ride and gave her every opportunity. After a nine month layoff it was great to see her return to the races. Lets hope she can move forward from this start.

Yahoo! News has the following article today: Barbaro's trainer not getting hopes up which includes the following excerpt:

The medical updates on Barbaro seem encouraging, yet the trainer of the ailing Kentucky Derby winner isn't allowing himself to become too optimistic.

"I'm not getting my hopes up," Michael Matz said Saturday. "I'm just taking it one day at a time -- but he's trying."

I had asked Michael during the week whether he was getting a little more optimistic (as we were getting all the positive news) and his answer to me was similar to the above.

Update 335: A nice article from the Washington Post : Barbaro a 'Happy Horse' As He Adapts to His Situation rehashes generally what we know. I do like the closing:

The outpouring of support from the public, Sweeney said, has shown no signs of slowing.

"People see traits in him they wish they had, a warrior's spirit," Sweeney said. "He's a hero and he has no agenda. People can make him what they need in their life."

I just received an e-mail from a friend of mine at Delaware Park noting the raffle drawing for the Mike Rea Relief Fund is to be monday, I may try to get down for that (I owe for a few tickets!):

On Monday the Mustang for Mike Rea will be drawn here at Delaware Park. The fourth race is to be named after Mike Rea and the drawing is expected to take place about that time to. The car is on display in the grove and the drawing will be in the winners circle. I think there are still some tickets in the horsemens office for purchase.

The latest report about Mike seems a little more upbeat.

Update 334: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (friday night). Just got a voice mail from Peter Brette. Sorry for the late update.

Just talked to Diane at Kennett Florist - those people are the best! I was wondering about the overnight shift at NBC ... whether they are getting any of the goodies that are sent or not. She said they would check to see what "shifts" are worked and get back to me with the number of people at night. I'd like to send some snacks to those good folks in our name.

I can just picture that in the wee hours it is every bit as important to have an alert, caring, competent staff paying attention to Barbaro and all the other animals. Want them to know they are not forgotten! So just going on record to say I will try to cover that for at least one "night" for us (if the info they get shows that's appropriate)!

Alex, I am also so interested in what Eduardo and Ricardo (or Rafael...sorry not clear on his first name) have to say about their relationship with Bobby. If it is too intrusive to ask them, I understand. We just all feel for them, and know they must love this horse. If you can, please let them know that they are remembered and thanked for their care of Bobby. And I think of Peter often and hope he is doing well.

Glad Barbaro had an ACN and hope he is having an ACD (another comfortable day)! Go Red Aspen! And safety to all other Fair Hill horses and all horses who run today!

I too am confused (and confusing) about names...
Mine is usually masculine but not in my case.

Almost all my business mail comes addressed to Mr.
not Ms. and the powers that be are confused too
because I received a selective service registration card whem I turned 18...

Anyway thanks for your delightful sense of humor which keeps things on the light side!

I wonder if anyone horse knowledgable can comment on exercise for Bobby....? I read that his condition calls for it, maybe 5 or 6 ten minute walks outside per day...equal to about an hour...

I constantly wonder if anything like this is possible, or will be on the near horizon...?? I just think everything should fit in naturally and everything is important in his healing and wellbeing. Thanks..

I think a little sunshine would do him a world of good. I know in the past when I have been sick with a cold the doctor said to sit outside for a while - the sunshine helps heal and gives you Vitimin C. Perhaps he would get to excited being outside - not sure?????

2 Alex again thank you for setting up some guide lines. I hope you'll go back (assuming you have time)and re-read things. You will see when the board generally erupts. Then you can decide what you need or don't need to do about it.

    Hi Chris Byers,

I briefly read the post of July 28th ans was dismayed that Mike's family felt like they were intruding on this site. I feel so bad for them. I am very glad Alex set up some guidelines. It is unfortunate when a few people can ruin the happy and upbeat tone of this board. I hope anyone who is interested in Barbaro and his recovery feel like they are able to express their opinion. Keep it happy and upbeat!!

    Christine:

Not yet. Bobby's right hind leg (the one that was broken) has not fused yet. Some of it has and is healing. But the pastern bone hasn't fused.

I can hear you asking what the heck a pastern bone is. I want you to visualize a horse. Looking down the leg you'll see the knee and then the ankle (fetlock in horsey terms). The long bone between is called the cannon bone--think tibia in people talk.

Okay, from the ankle to the hoof is a slanted joint. That slanted joint is what is the pastern. We need that to fuse.

Now on Bobby's left hind most of the hoof was removed because of laminitis. This is a terrible disease. The bone instead the hoof (called the coffin bone) detached from the inner hoof wall. Yes, this hurts. Think of it as having your fingernail yanked from where it comes out of your fingers.

So Bobby has a protective cast on this leg. It's changed everyday and they do dressings on it. But it takes forever to grow out. So Bobby is on nutritional supplements and is recieving all kinds of cutting edge treatments.

So while he's been derailed from getting out of the hospital--you are on the right track. A bit premature for now. But hang in there with Bobby and us. He needs you.

We are praying for one another, our ill companion animals, our horses heading out to race and BARBARO. I feel terrible that his family feels that they've intruded...in my opinion they have not!!!

    Margaret…
I agree with you on your post about recent pictures of Bobby. We all know that he is very thin right now and it is very hard to see him that way. We will tend to become alarmed and that would be wrong being his condition now has nothing to do with him getting better.

Someone posted a link to Upenn yesterday for a picture of Bobby in his sling. I have seen the picture before but this link loaded the page up huge and you could see the wear on Bobby’s body from the sling and his bridle very loose around his nose. It made me cry, but then I had to focus on the good and his progress now.

What is beautiful (thank you Alex) is the pictures from “Barbaro arrives at the Preakness” from yesterday’s update. One in particular, Bobby reaching his nose all the way over to his neighbors stall to check him out. I downloaded that as my wallpaper so I can see his spirit and thirst for life anytime, all the time. I hope I was allowed to do that. Just nice seeing him happy and I will keep looking at my wallpaper until I have a new one of him outside the hospital.

Any playful pictures of Bobby are most welcomed here.

Margot...I too signed the H.R.503 but I must live in a state (NJ) that the reps don't care enough to contact us.

I don't know Sally, but you are exactly right about being outdoors..it does a world of good. I really don't want to stir up controversies with my speculations and the NBC docs KNOW BEST, especially Dr. R - the best. It's just that that's what I read about the condition... plus, he's lost alot of muscle mass and has been confined for so long.. Maybe they're waiting for the right leg to be totally solid again....? ::groan::

A couple days ago people were discussing what the American Horse Slaughter Amendment Act was. Basically-there are 3 slaughterhouses in America that kill horses (90,000+) a year for overseas consumption. The opponents of the bill are the slaughterhouses (obviously) and others who feel that passing this would not eliminate slaughtering, it would just make it more "underground" and less humane. BUT-it is NOT humane as it is. I will spare details because it is very disturbing. What needs to happen is that farms/private stables throughout the country must be able to find foster and/or adoption care for these animals. We must prove that there will be homes for these horses to go to. We can all write to congress and offer to sponsor a horse. I don't know exactly who to contact, but if everybody chipped in to sponsor, or even adopt one horse, that is one more that could be saved. Let's put these slaughterhouses out of business! If you want to get involved to help this bill get passed-please contact your state senator or congressman urging your views.

    Bobby,
Hooray another good night..May God continue to bless you each and every day. We love you so much. Thank you Alex for the updates..God Bless all Barbaro Caretakers and Family.

Here is a very good article from the Daily Racing Forum.
    Some progress noted for Barbaro

    By GLENYE CAIN

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro appears to be making some progress in his recovery from a shattered right hind leg and severe laminitis in his left leg.The 3-year-old colt remains in intensive care at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center veterinary hospital, but an update the university issued Friday included a positive assessment from its chief surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson, who changed Barbaro's right hind cast on Wednesday night."We took new radiographs, and they look good," Richardson said. "No problems were evident."The colt's left hind cast, which protects his laminitic foot, is being changed daily so the hospital team can treat the foot and monitor it for signs of infection. Richardson removed about 80 percent of Barbaro's left hoof wall earlier this month after the colt developed laminitis, a hoof disease often related to excessive weight-bearing.In a Thoroughbred Times online report Friday, Richardson noted that the left hoof appears to be slowly regrowing. He also said that "there were no signs of infection" in the colt's right hind leg."His prognosis remains very guarded, but we're not even remotely considering quitting on him right now," Richardson said. "The horse looks too good."

    Team Barbaro:

ACN - fantastic. Alex, no apology needed for the lateness. We can all be very patient for news of our Sweet Bobby J.

To the Mike Rea family/friends - visit here whenever you need support. Just let us know you're here and we'll step up to help you. I've kept Mike and his family in my prayers/energy sending.

Barbaro - BATH DAY!!!! Hooray!!! We know the left rear hoof is showing growth and we'll just take one day at at time. We also can't forget the fusing of the pastern bone...fuse, bone, fuse...

Gonna sign off - will be back in the evening to help tuck our B into bed...everybody stay cool - those who have horses racing today - may they run like the wind and finish safely - then come back to the stables to cool down for a well-deserved rest.

    Healing to all,

For those asking earlier, Kielbasa Queen is technically The Kielbasa Queen if you are looking for her in Equibase. She's trained by Tim Woolley, so I think she's entirely appropriate to discuss here.

    :)

I'm just very curious to know when she might next be racing as some friends are interested in seeing her run.

Glad the update today was a positive one.

Alex, you're probably quite weary by now of all the praise & gratitude that's been heaped upon you these last weeks, so my apologies for piling on as well. But as someone who's been visitng this site multiple times every day since Barbaro's misfortune, i'd be indeed remiss for not passing on all the many, many times i've wanted to say " Thank You SO VERY Much for your incredibly comprehensive, ceaseless & obviously heartfelt attention to this site " . . impossible to imagine what it must demand of you.

Here's to a well deserved, peaceful & looooong vacation for you Soon, right in there with every loving wish for a Full & Speedy recovery for our Magnificent Barbaro.

Nothing good is Ever lost, Alex, so you can be sure that somewhere in this is something Bright & Wonderful for you as well.

Just cannot thank you enough !

I have to tell everyone about something that I just saw while working out at the gym. Something (as a Barbaromaniac) I had to take as a sign. There was a sign hanging up at the gym and written across the top were the letters "ACN". I couldn't believe my eyes as only a Barbaromaniac would know these letters to mean what it means. I continued reading and the sign was about something called the "ACN" opportunity. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what they were using the letters for but I know what we use them for. Needless to say I just got home and checked my computer and Alex had posted the update. I knew it was a positive sign for Bobby as soon as I saw it!

    Hi everybody
    I miss you all.

I'm still at my mom's -- no Internet! I'm at the library right now.

So I am delighted to hear that Bobby is progressing. I do take to heart Alex's suggestion that we remember we are on a long road.

I have tried to glance through the last day or so; lovely photos of the Preakness day, Alex, thank you.

There was A LOT to scroll past in the comments!!! :) Thank you for the rules, Alex. I was so sad to see you finally have to say it, but glad that you did.

Driving alone through the countryside for so many hours coming here, everything reminded me of Barbaro -- every horse, so many thoughts. Lots of time for prayer.

Mary L -- I am pulling for you, and your test results, as always. Glad to see you are hanging around the board.

Dee -- Hope you are getting good news on your health mystery. Praying for you also.

Pamela -- I hope you are having a good day. Miss you, girl!

I don't think I'll be able to check in every day, but I am with you all in spirit.

Thank you, God for another comfortable night for our beloved Barbaro! Please continue to watch over him, his caregivers, and his family and friends.

Great report on you, Dear Barbaro! Keep up the good work, Sweet Boy! You are doing great, and we are all here for you--for the duration! Love you!

Susan in TX - I am so pleased to hear that your China kitty is home. I continue to pray for her recovery.

Mary L in Ohio, I hope that today finds you feeling better. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I took Walter back to the Vet this morning and he is pleased with her progress. She's walking a little more each day, and I hope that before too long, she will be walking normally again. Thank you all again for keeping my Walter in your thoughts and prayers. If you would like to light candles for her, here is her page:
    http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=walt

I wore on of my Barbaro T-Shirts to the Vet for good luck. (Hahaha...like I need a reason-I am afraid I'm going to wear them out!) I don't remember seeing a link to this particular shirt posted, (forgive me if it's a duplicate) but I got it from the Kentucky Derby Museum store. A portion of the proceeds are being donated to the Barbaro fund. Here is the link in case you are interested:

Have a wonderful day, Team Barbaro. Love to you all! Sue xoxox

When you get done reading the article from the Washington Post that Alex has linked, there are some photos from the Kentucky Derby that I haven't seen before. At the bottom of the article to the right is a box for the Kentucky Derby. At the bottom of that box is a link to Photos-Barbaro sprints to victory. Most of them I've seen, but there is one of Edgar Prado and Michael Matz hugging after the Derby. Pretty uplifting.

Thanks Lynda, It was showing #5 on my racing channel..have to look for some results.

Alex: I am so glad your going to try to track down Barbaro's groomers and hot walkers. I feel bad for them, groomers and those that take care of the horse everyday all day often form the strongest bond. And I am sure you can attest to that. I was amazed that noone wanted to ask them how they were dealing with Barbaro's accident and recovery.

I was thinking that I would like to send them something and wondered if I sent it to Michael's barn do you think they would get it? Go Red Aspen!

Loved your post from yesterday about Barbaro as a bodhisattva...the Buddhist idea of a being that forgoes their own enlightenment to stay on earth and help others through their example, at least that's my general understanding of it...

I have been astounded at the outpouring of feeling, emotion, energy etc. that has been generated by Barbaro and can't help but feel it would be a shame not to harness this energy and use it to do good.

What a fitting way to honor him...

For Linda G: I don't know who you are and have actually never seen you post on here. I have not been on much lately as I have been busy. However, I do check the updates and positive vibes going on at this site. I would appreciate you leaving my name as well as the others you have listed out of your posts, it is rude. We do not come here for a chat room daily, we come here for the same reasons you do. I am a horse owner and racehorse owner and have been following the Tim Woolley site for Barbaro updates as well as the informative information which is offered and asked of us "horsey" people. I made the first comments last night regarding a response from someone on this site regarding INTENSE religous preaching which included many negative thoughts. People here can write what they feel and should be allowed to and I should be allowed to offer my insight as well, without ever telling someone what to post. Strange how the folks you listed in your post included some of the knowledgable folks on this site helping others. Until you actually KNOW what is going on in here, stop taking it upon yourself to list names of people you obviously have no knowledge of, and then trying to tell them to post somewhere else. That was very rude and uncalled for......

An answer and info for the person asking about the ancestral significance of Barbaro's white heal spot:
The Godolphin Arabian was one of the foundation sires of all Thoroughbreds. He is said to have been quite small, very Arabian in type, and had a small white marking on his heel. In Arabian horse lore, the white spot is the emblem of swiftness.
When I was a young girl, my favorite book was Marguerite Henry's "King of the Wind." It is a beautiful little novel about Sham, The Godolphin Arabian. It is beautifully illustrated by Wesley Dennis. The illustrations look so much like Barbaro!
Marguerite Henry's historical/fictional tale seems to have been intensly researched. When one reads it, (or any history of the Godolphin) it is so easy to see parallells and striking similarities in the ultimate destinys of both The Godolphin, and Barbaro.
Barbaro IS a horse of Destiny. With the injury, his work has just begun. His job now, is to survive, and to continue to bring people together in his cause of benefit to the horse world.
He has opened up more discussion of horse related issues of great and immediate import, ranging from Equine medicine, racetrack safety, the fate of the Premarin mares and foals, horse slaughter, selling to overseas buyers, etc etc. Please, let's all help him in his "work." That's what WE are here for. Let us spread the word, and keep the spotlight on these and other horse issues. And not only here and at horse sites, but to as much of the world as possible. He is our banner and inspiration.
God Bless you Barbaro, and the people who are caring for you...and all of the people who love you. Like your great ancester, you are indeed a horse of destiny.

Re: Latest Update... if you link to the actual article, they have some comments about Dr. R (how NBC is backing him in what he said in press conference of two weeks ago)...You know, I certainly hope that people aren't now saying Dr R
exaggerated Bobby's condition...Good Lord...no wonder he said he would be second-guessed...I initially thought he was referring to his methods of treatment...Never thought people would look back and say I thought you told me he was not going to make it, etc...
We Barbaro fans know that Bobby is still in serious condition...Things could still go very bad very fast...But, for right now, Bobby is happy and lovin life...I don't like the inferences
    re Dr. R....grrrr

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 7:09 PM

    Hi Jeannette C:
The withers is the prominent ridge where the neck and the back join. At the withers, powerful muscles of the neck and shoulders attach to the elongated spines of the second to sixth thoracic vertebrae. The height of a horse is measured vertically from the withers to the ground, because the withers is the horse's highest constant point.

Gloria, Heres an article on the groom that helped
keep Barbaro from falling and damaging his leg, he in essance saved Barbaro's life, for which we are all grateful, he is a true hero.
The Thoroughbred Times has an excellent article: Matz groom Orozco recalls harrowing moments at Preakness that highlights the immediate reactions of those at Pimlico at the time of the horrific incident. Clearly we make decisions in fleeting moments that make have long term consequences, and perhaps Rafael Orozco's decision to get to Barbaro soonest may have helped significantly in the recovery process. The following is an excerpt:

"I want to help," Orozco said. "I see that when he passed in front of me that his rear right leg was broke and I said, 'Oh my God' and I [ran] out there.

"The jockey tried to pull him up, you know, and my only reaction was to help Barbaro. I don't want him to fall down and hurt his leg more or something."

People doing what they do because that is what they do.

Thanks for acknowledging my post Pamela....

Someone mentioned that they wondered why Dr. Anderson didn't post any longer.....

Maybe it is because a lot of these posts are getting crazier and crazier....What professional would want to be associated with it? Also, like I said in my other post....This site is a dignified site for horse and racing fans and some of this posting is taking away from the integrity of this website.

It would be nice if the people posting would remember Tim Woolleys' name is on this site....and the craziness is disrespectful to what he is trying to create and to what he and Alex and others are doing.

Ridiculous...malicious...crazy postings here are no different than being invited into someone's home and tearing it up.

I am happy Barbaro has had another good night and that yesterday's posting about Mike Rea was positive.

    I believe in Barbaro.

    Hi Sharonlynn,

I'm also in NJ and frequently checking sites as Congress.gov for different legislation. For a quick find enter bill # in Legislation in Current Congress Box. Then click on bill number and press search.

Re HR503, there are 203 co sponsors. If I read the list right, the following reps from NJ are co sponsers This doesn't guarantee they will vote the same way, that's why we keep bugging them:

Frelinghuysen, LoBiondo, Pallone, Rothman, Andrews, Holt, Smith. Missing in Action - Garrett

For S1915, 21 co sponsors. Lautenberg and Menendez are co sponsors (Menendez also signed on when in the House)

    Hope this helps.

Maybe, just maybe, Dr. Anderson doesn't post as often simply because SHE IS A DR. and has a hectic schedule. If you go back through the posts, most of the times that Dr. Anderson posted were in regard to serious changes in Barbaro's condition. Barbaro is stable again and is beginning to show signs of improvement. Alex and his people do a wonderful job of keeping us up to date on what's going on. I'm sure if anything changes with Barbaro, Alex will ask Dr. Anderson for her opinion and thoughts.

Most of us are not 'tearing up' anyone's house. Further, most of us wouldn't go to someone's elses house and tell them how they should live. THAT would be rude.

Most of the time this site offers hope, encouragement and an opportunity to learn. Sometimes we can even forget about our own hardships for a moment and just have a laugh or two.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed that the site only takes a turn for the worse when certain people decide what this site 'should' be for and what the posters are 'allowed' to think. This site is what it is. If it does not meet your 'standards' then use your free will to chose another venue. Seriously, do you really believe that if someone wanted to send a horse to Tim for training that they would decide not to do so because of a message board? If so, then we should be thanked for our posts as I don't know anyone who would want to do business with such a fool.

    PLEASE, READ...

If anyone wants to sober up, they should go to Mike Rea's site and read the latest update...He is better, but the fight he is putting up is absolutely heroic...
His family mentions that they were so happy to read that we talk about Mike every day, and they came here to post a thank you...They were struck by so many comments regarding who could post what, and to whom, that they felt the need to APOLOGIZE TO US for, supposedly intruding.
I am known for my sense of humor, but I am deadly serious...This very bad. It made me cry to think that Mike Rea's family felt this way because of us! Whether you are a participant we should all be concerned.
I hope that each person will take some time to
read the update at Mike's site and appreciate this family's valiant struggle.
He and his family deserve our love, respect and
    support.

I'm looking forward to the day Barbaro is released from NBC. I hope we can be there along with Mike and his family as we give thanks for TWO complete recoveries!

Posted by: Joyce at July 29, 2006 7:44 PM

Sorry...that wasn't directed at anyone in particular...I just was so stunned...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 7:44 PM

Thank you Joyce...The postings at his website are so raw and personal and reveal very intimate information regarding Mike and his recovery...I don't think I have seen bravery like that (in a human being) in a long time.

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 7:46 PM

Thanks, Pam. That is exactly what i was refering to earlier. By the way - Mike's first concern on accident details was if his horse was hurt.

Again, I humbly apologize to Tim and Alex and to the people on this board for losing my German temper last night and getting into an argument when I should have known better. I WILL NOT LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN.

Thanks to all of you for coming here.

WE WELCOME THE REA FAMILY AS OUR OWN !!!!!

Posted by: chris byers at July 29, 2006 7:47 PM

    Pamela,
no one should feel as though they're intruding, I hope no one feels they are.

Posted by: Anna at July 29, 2006 7:47 PM

...When Mike was told what happened he cried because he thought the horse was hurt!

Can you imagine the courage it took to post that...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 7:48 PM

You are so right Anna...It just tore through my heart to read that apology...in the midst of such poignant details about Mike's day to day life...

We've built quite a family here. I keep up on the posts regarding Mike and would like to invite Mike and his family to join ours. Like every familiy, we are somewhat disfunctional, but we all mean well.

Thank you for the welcome Jo; I am happy to be here! I get so much from this site and everyone who is so knowledgeable about horses and sharing information.
    Isn't life GRAND?!

I got an email from our Senator yesterday (Evan Bayh of Indiana); he states he is a co-sponsor of H.R. 503 and that really made my weekend!

Gotta run out to the store now so everyone take care and I'll check in later on.....

The Chicago Tribune article was wonderful.

Question for Alex: Alex, It's great that Bobby has started regrowing the hoof. I have a question about the lamani (probably spelled wrong). Do they regrow also? If I understand lamanitis, the failure of the lamani allow the coffin bone to rotate and fall. What happens to the lamani? Do they grow back also, or just stay balled up?

Such a relief for each day to have something to be thankful for concerning Bobby's recovery. Bobby you are never far from my thoughts, love and prayers. I try to imagine what is happening there at NBC and the best I can do is to imagine a hospital and it's patients and Doctors. I imagine a busy place during the day, should keep you interested, and quiet at night. Wonder if you all (horses) whinny and talk to each other. I know that you are the Head Horse ( being the undefeated 132 Kentucky Derby Winner, The Smatest and The Most Beautiful) of the herd.

Love and Prayers to you, Bobby

Every day now - I'm kvellin' mit nachas! In other words, bursting with joy when I see the wonderful progress of our wonderful Barbaro boy. WUNDERBAR!

Well over 1,000 candles now, and I visited Walter's as well - double digits.

Question - How does one create a group for candles (such as Barb and Walt)? Couldn't seem to find a way to do it. Please explain and/or direct me to the right place on the site to do it.

I want/need to set up a candle site for John & Judy's horse. They're the owners of my Blackie's barn. Their wonder boy, Irish Sport Horse 7 y.o. Stallion, White Diamond ("WD-40") (of whom I've previously raved to some of you, and sent pics to our email "splinter" group), whose 1st 3-day event I was privileged to attend - was pulled out of the jumping show at Lamplight Equestrian Center this past week, when something happened - they don't know what (no fall, no evident misstep, no rail down) - causing a major problem very high in his hind end. He's on stall rest, scheduled for a nuclear scan at Purdue (Indiana vet school; teaching hospital) and when I heard about it yesterday, and told John about the candle thing, he kind of lit up and acted like yes, he would like that.

So - can somebody please set up, or help me do so, a candle group for WD-40? THANK YOU.

    All,

So glad to hear today's good news.

Here's the article on Orozco rushing to help Barbaro..........he was obviously very important to keeping Barbaro from any additional injury.

    http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/search/searchdetail.asp?RecordNo=64284&Section=1

Also, I would love to see the bracelets.......Lisa could you please send pics to docb1417@yahoo.com.......still deciding how many I will order. thanks!

Posted by: Anne at July 29, 2006 7:59 PM

Hi Christian! I don't know if you'll see this but you made my day! Yes, there are some animals who respond to "energetic truth", they just know, they don't need to think about it, their innate knowledge tells them what to do. I see this in some dogs and some horses. I think it also has a lot to do with their owners or their handlers. If they too are evolved, conscious beings then the relationship sparks a kind of sacred experience. Like Mr. Orozco, he also responded intuitively to a situation without having to think about it when he jumped out on the track and held Barbaro back to prevent further injury.

To Lisa (?) the bracelet lady:
I, too am interested in aquiring a bracelet when they are ready. Please, if you are able, would you E-Mail me at perfectenoughtoo@hotmail.com ?
Or, somehow let us all know the details when ready? Thank you.

I am also interested in finding out more about BARBARO'S half brother, PERFECT DRIFT. I viewed some photos of him today. He has the same spirit behind his eyes that our dear BARBARO has. A beautiful family resemblance. Little brother can carry on, on the track. Beautiful! Is he owned by BARBARO'S people?

The news about Mr Blowen's interest in horses that go to Japan is encouraging. I do fear for WAR EMBLEM, BAGO, and too many anonymous others who have not had their moment in the spotlight. Overseas selling,(to countries where people eat horses), whether for racing or for breeding, is just too dirty-a-little-secret not to have misgivings about. The fate of big, sweet, and swift FERDINAND should never be forgotten.

    BARBARO, heal and live!

Tim, Alex, Thank you for this site. It is a focus point for positive energy, and a huge source of comfort. It keeps us close to BARBARO. We cannot touch him, but because of your generous efforts, he touches us.

Posted by: Linda from Michigan at July 29, 2006 8:01 PM

Superfecta thanks for the info. I know little about horseracing. "The Kielbasa Queen" has made me giggle. When I giggle I think of Barbaro and beam that joy up to NBC.

Morgan, good job. I posted earlier about biting my tongue--hard to do-- but effective. You might have noticed that 99% of the posts have been positive and respectful since the update. The attackers appear silenced. Good guests honor their host and I count you among the good guests.

I read that Barbaro is thin now? is that because of the injury? I keep reading that his appetite is very healthy. Would that not make him gain weight?

Maybe it's better to not have recent pictures. Some of us have to struggle to stay positive. A positive visual is better for the worry warts among us.....my name is Marky and I am a worry wart. Admission is the 1st step to healing.

Hey big boy can you hear me? I am learning about horses and delight in your courage.

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 8:22 PM

CJ-I know one of the vets at Purdue. Her name is Amanda Farr. She bought my Arabian colt and took him down to Indiana when she moved from Michigan. If she's on the team that is working on your friend's horse, he's in good hands!

Regarding laminae: The laminae are what connects the hoof wall to the underlying structures. When they weaken or die during laminitis/founder the coffin bone may then rotate downward which causes incredible pain. As the hoof wall grows out, new laminae will form. Some horses recover without a trace of having laminitis. Other horses will always have a misshapen hoof. On these horses, the white line is usually 'stretched' as well. It doesn't always look pretty, but corrective trimming and shoeing can allow the horse to live a fairly normal, comfortable life.

Thanks David Litell and Anne for the info on the article about Rafael Orozco. Even though the people who perform the deeds don't think they are heroic, I feel that everyone who helped Barbaro that day was in fact doing an extraordinary job of reacting in just the right ways (as did Barbaro).

Yes, it is still a long road ahead, but our thanks to ALL those who made it possible for the journey to even begin.

Hope Bobby continues to improve, and even thrive on, the treatment he is receiving. I am confident he has the absolute best care he could have, from every angle and perspective.

We have been gently reprimanded to be kind to one another. And to keep it horsey. That part should be easy because that is what has brought of alot us together in the first place.

Perhaps what we need is a link where "teachers" (I use that term loosely and it can be from all faiths) can put up a link or email addy. Just like the button for Contact Us. And within would be a whole list of addys. That way no one is going to feel like someone else is cramming things down their throats. It's a thought and an idea. I'm not promoting it anymore than such. If you like it--contact Alex and let's see where it'll go.

Besides the other good thing is that then others have your email addy and they can contact you offlist. I would however suggest an email set up for spammers just in case...

Hey...how is the horse racing season divided up?
When does it start or stop?

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 8:52 PM

I feel so badly for Michael Matz. So much time, effort and training into Barbaro and then it is taken instantaneously and dreams shattered - although winning the Kentucky Derby was a dream come true for him. This has to be so hard on him......

Pamela is she talking about us??? I have no idea why.

Barbaro in a mullett - noooooooooooooooooooway!!!
He is too hot as he is - no changes please. The tail does need to grow a big along with the hoof - but leave the rest alone - PLEASE!

And don't even go there with Dr Dean - way to hot for a mullet.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 8:53 PM

As to the new update: This is a perfect example of accepting reality and not being in denial of what is going no with Barbaro. A miracle is happening and our prayers relay so much about each of us, but the reality is the poor condition Barbaro is in and accepting that is the true way to help him heal. The positive aura surrounding him is wonderful but we must hang on to reality as well.....

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 8:54 PM

Deb G. - I hope he can find some comfort in how many peoples lives Bobby has touched.

Posted by: chris byers at July 29, 2006 8:54 PM

JEAN...excellent idea! I could never keep a night
shift at NBC...I'd be hangin' around Bobby all night!

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 8:54 PM

Which leaves me the day shift to hang around Dr Dean all day!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 8:55 PM

    LOLOLOL

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 8:56 PM

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 8:56 PM

    Anne
Thank you so much for the site with the Orozco article. I knew from all the pics of him with Barbaro that they were close. I'm sure these past months have been hard for him, as well as Barbaro's groom. How could anyone spend that much time with Bobby and not fall completely in love with him? Look at all of us and we've never even met him! I stil wonder if Orozco and Hernendez have been able to visit him. Maybe Alex will b ableto tell us.

Posted by: Susan in TX at July 29, 2006 8:58 PM

I think he definitely falls into the horsey category...I am so glad to hear a little optomism coming from that direction, but Deb G is right...we have to temper it with some realism, too.

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 8:58 PM

    Jean,
Thanks for providing something to the night shift at NBC when you were in the neighborhood. That was very thoughtful of you! I will work with Alie at Kennett on Monday to see what I can do. She returned my call this afternoon, and said she had all the info about the different shifts, but I was unavailable at that time, so will catch up with her Monday.

Continued good wishes to Barbaro and all who care for him.

Posted by: Gloria at July 29, 2006 8:58 PM

how can it heal when the cast is not left alone???????thats why casts are there to keep bones from any movement so they can heal-If something else happens to babaro will be the drs fault-he should have been in sling from day one-have a friend is a horse vet--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------BARBARO YOU ARE THE GREATEST-makes our family feel very scared -we love amd pray for you every day-We know you will get better-and see you healing-god bless you and all people who truly love you from the heart!

Posted by: sarah in florida at July 29, 2006 8:59 PM

Margaret: I have not been on here much lately. I see what you are trying to say though. I just don't think another special section is warranted as when new people come onto this board, some just want to learn more as well as enjoy being able to share what is going on in here. I don't follow all that is going on (and someone via email alerted me to the 4:02 p.m. posting last night - I did not even see it) all the time, but I see so many wonderful posts from everything to religion to horses to their own pains and experiences....I think it is great that so many are learning from this site as they can...

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 9:00 PM

Sarah in FL...They change the "Cast" on the hoof that had laminitis...that needs to be checked for signs of infection...The leg with the broken bones is not changed every day...
You bring up a good point about the sling...but at this point, he has to have the relief from standing...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:01 PM

You gals are too funny! Mullet?

My heart sinks when I read about Michael Matz not being optimistic. Perfectly normal for him to feel. His heart was completely broken when Barbaro suffered his injury and still is to watch his own training and efforts standing in a stall fighting for his life.....very hard.....
    Can we send him something???

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 9:04 PM

I don't know about the "should have been in a sling from day one..." I trust Dr. Rs vast experience in this matter...that is all he does is equine orthopedics...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:04 PM

If he goes to NBC daily, perhaps have something sent there for him upon his arrival from Kennet Florist with a nice note from the Tim Woolley site folks...

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 9:04 PM

I don't know, Deb G...I have no clue...I can't imagine the heartache he feels...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:05 PM

The only thing I didn't agree with was the whole article up at Yahoo. They said that Barbaro's condition hasn't been changed.

I realize how serious is situation is. I've been gently suggesting for the past 24 hours that the reason NBC isn't releasing photos is because Bobby probably doesn't look like the Bobby we knew. And that it would be very upsetting to many of us.

The report I heard yesterday from NBC said that Bobby's condition is very guarded. I think very guarded is a STEP (not a huge)in the right direction. But that is a step away from critical.

    Michael's Miracle

Posted by: Margaret at July 29, 2006 9:06 PM

Technically, very guarded is literally a step from critical...Dr. R was speaking doctor speak, I think...you know, not descriptively, if that helps...

    Deb:

I meant it for our "bandwidth explosion poster"!

    Michael's Miracle

Posted by: Margaret at July 29, 2006 9:09 PM

I agree Pamela - I just can't see Dr Dean saying Yipee Barbaro's getting better!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 9:09 PM

Gosh, guys....the horse racing is on ESPN...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:11 PM

    Re: The Sling

I think initially Barbaro would not tolerate the sling. I'm pretty sure Dr. R. said that's why they couldn't use it for the first and second cast changes.

Posted by: Susan in TX at July 29, 2006 9:11 PM

Our Bobby sure has learned alot - not the sling is his new toy and helper.

Sweet Talker wins at Saratoga - safe race - thats what matters

Sorry I was wrong - Sweet Talker came in second.

    Report on Barbaro coming up!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 9:17 PM

Barbaro update right now on ESPN2

Posted by: Susan in TX at July 29, 2006 9:17 PM

Now Pamela - we need to be very choosie when it comes to hooking up our guy. We have plenty of time.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 9:18 PM

I strongly disagree with the announcer...Bernadini would have eaten Barbaro's
    dirt in the Preakness!

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:19 PM

I second that - there is no one that could have betten Barbaro.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 9:20 PM

Got that from backing up my Tivo to the start of the show...the guy said..." I know it isn't politically correct, but...Bernadini's win in the
Preakness was just as impressive as Barbaro's win at the Derby...maybe even more so!"
    NO WAY!

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:21 PM

Barbaro took a crowd of favorites and demolished them in the Derby...and they were all fresher than the horses going into the Preakness! NO WAY!

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:23 PM

Margaret: I agree with you. We have been talking about that. The fact Barbaro does not look the same right now. They just showed Barbaro on TV, but that was previous video - I remember seeing that a few weeks ago. With the loss of muscle and his inability to exercise, it is certain he does not look the same, but that is normal for what he is going through...with healing comes the ability for him to eventually get that back....

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 9:23 PM

Dont think that it was tried but hope you are right-because this would no tbe happening now-I understand changing left hoof but why the right????Bones have to stay and remain-immobile to heal-thats why casts are used-do you know a person with a broken bone where they change their cast every week???????Just is a fact-makes no sense-I have good thoughts about Brabro-think positive what does it hurt?I do beleive our prayers are working-and I know that the people there know we are watching-so they will be doing their best-I do feel they love him-and know the Jacksons do-what fine people-is too bad all people arent like them-and michael matz what a sweet person-god bless Barbaro and all who love him!!!

Posted by: Sarah in florida at July 29, 2006 9:24 PM

Just an FYI...Barbaro still leads the money chase...and his last (completed) race was the DERBY!

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 9:24 PM

I've been checking all day and boy are we doing better than last night. I don't have an ignore button.I have an ejecter key that blasts me away from the keyboard. I got airborn about 4 times last night--kept biting my tongue and put on a helmet.

Pamela and Sally keep the mood light, which is good for us and Barbaro. You both also make me feel like I don't need a psychiatrist....yet.

Pamela I emailed Mike's family and apologized for those who made them feel unwelcome. Are there really people who believe that a spirit as gracious as Barbaro would not want us to support a man who's first concern is the horse while he's fighting for survival????Ay Dios Mio!

Big Boy I'm zooming in with joy and love on the right pastern joint and left hoof, see how much I've learned from the horsey people here?

6th isn't too bad for a first start after nine months off. I'm glad she came out of it sound, and hopefully, none the worse for wear!

Just watched Sweet Talker run - 2nd by a head. Congrats to Graham Motion!! I was screaming so loudly I thought my neighbours might come to see if I was in some kind of trouble! :o)

Much love to Barbaro, as always. I know everyone closest to him is trying not to get overly-optimistic as the fragility of life can catch us all off guard. We will continue to hope and pray for the good days and for that ultimate day when Bobby is able to go home.

Can't believe that guy said that on TV - what a joke!!!

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 9:25 PM

And weren't there like half as many horses in the Preakness as in th Derby. I did not like that comment either!!!!

Posted by: Susan in TX at July 29, 2006 9:25 PM

Hey, Barbaro, you are in our prayers.
To Tim W, thank you for the udates on this site. My family has never owned a horse but we love Barbaro anyway. My children are reading about horses now, and they have a new hero to cheer. Thank you.

    Ken

PS: in all due respect, it DID take me QUITE AWHILE to scroll to this posting area. Most of the comments I read are informative, interesting and very uplifting...but there IS a lot of "chat" back and forth, some about Barbaro, but also a lot of personal stuff an other "private joke floatsome." Is this a comment board or a chat room?

stop dwelling on the negative-that does nothing to help Barbaro-thoughts are things-sure would not want you praying for me-see him healing ever heard of visualization????????It works and God hears us tooso we need to stay positive-unless you dont want him to get well-

Posted by: sarah from fl at July 29, 2006 9:28 PM

I can understand Michael feeling this way because his heart must be breaking. Maybe it's his way of dealing with what's happening to Bobby....a kind of defense mechanism. I just hope that he soon has something to be optimistic about as Bobby continues to improve and fight against the odds.

    Anna: LOL

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 9:33 PM

Sarah in FL...I think the right hind has only been changed once since that volley of surgeries...since I only know about human orthopedics, I am not an expert because horses are diferent...they must stand most of their lives...therefore, yes, the cast is there to restrict mobility in the affected area...but, remember...Bobby had to have surgery to put in a plate to further stabilize the area, and he now has to stand on it... the change in the cast is a momentary thing when you consider the benefits of comfort (swelling may occur both above and below and including the surgical site)...and you get a much clearer radiograph when the cast is absent...especially when dealing with infection of the surgical site...you really don't need anything clouding the film when you are concerned about whether you have eliminated an infection...

a couple of board rules seem necessary, and this is not targeted at anyone, but I think if we follow these basic rules, dialog may return to singularly focusing on Bobby, his recovery and all the good Bobby can do (and learning about horses / racing) ... so not so singular, but there we go!

    a. please try not to offend

    b. please do not be offended (ignore / no response is better than responding to being offended)

    c. please don't write about bickering, it can only make things a little more tense.

in the meantime i plan to learn more about Messaging, and Bobby's groom and hotwalker for everyone.

I just went and read on Mike Rea's page that some here made his family feel very unwelcome here. I was appalled. These people are a part of the Fair Hill family and are very much in this loop. This Fair Hill family is why we're all able to be here, posting our encouragement and talk about horses/racing and Bobby.

Many of us who have learned about Mike's accident have been touched and are sending out the "good vibes" to him and his family as well!

To Mike Rea's family: I sincerely apologize for the voice of a minority who made you feel so unwelcome. Most of us here welcome you with open arms and are rooting for Mike to get better and come home!! I know the stress you all are under and hope that crankiness of a few people will not deter you from joining us again.

What! Dr. R told me he had to work last night. He was with you Pamela! :)

    Dear Sally,

I just LOVE you! You make me smile, and if Bobby was to have you visit, I have a visual of him rolling in his stall, holding his Tummy and laughing! You are a Joy!

    Love,

    Baltimore Debbie

Posted by: Debbie at July 29, 2006 9:55 PM

Pamela - I would have loved to see that - and here comes Barbaro leading by 6 lengths and he running backwards - this is truly a horserace!!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 9:56 PM

Bernadini won for exactly that reason - not sure what he beat so he looked really good!!

Being a military girl, I cringe a bit seeing a man from Dubai owning Bernadini - not my favorite horse.....Also found it a bit disrespectful that the jockey made such a show out of winning the preakness right in front of Barbaro and crew with in complete disregard of a terrible tragedy....just my own opinion....

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 9:56 PM

    Bobby's daddy is gorgeous!!
I even found a little video of him being walked...he's huge, unless his walker is very short!

Debbie -I would love to see him on his back holding his tummy. I would jump right in and give that tummy a kiss. I just love this horse.

I'm glad you appreciate my humor - I love this place. Don't anyone go anywhere - I love you all!!

I'm sorry...I am very happy for Bernadini, but I am not jumpin' on the Bernadini Bandwagon!

Sally and Pamela you crack me up!

Posted by: marie at July 29, 2006 9:58 PM

A lot of times, how well you do depends on your
competition!!!!! Look who Barbaro beat in the Derby...the best of the best!!! Darn that erks me!

Incessant, infantile banter and argumentative rhetoric is suitable for chat rooms, Instant Messaging, private e-mail and telephone conversations.

My objective in visiting this sight was to glean nuggets of relevant information and accurate updates. Scrolling through such abundance of idle chatter is excessively time-consuming and I will not continue.

For those inclined to refute my statements, I rather suggest you expend your talents responding to MIKE REA’S FAMILY, who posted this comment on HIS site) Friday, July 28, 2006 at 10:19 PM:

“I just wanted to write this comment. The other night I was so overwhelmed with all the messages and comments that were coming from people who said they read about Mike on Tim Woolley's racing site and Barbaro updates.

So I found the site and posted a thank you message not knowing until my sister arrived that Mike was mentioned nearly everyday. I stayed up last night until 3am reading all the posts.

WHEN I CAME TO THE POSTS ABOUT PEOPLE BEING UPSET THAT IT WAS BARBARO'S SITE AND NOT ANY BODY ELSE'S AND WERE ARGUING BACK AND FORTH ABOUT IT I FELT LIKE AN INTRUDER AND DUMMY FOR EVEN WANTING TO POST ON THAT SITE.

But everyone who did take up for Mike and send warm wishes, prayers, messages thank you so much over and over again. I apologize for stepping out of bounds but do wish the best for Barbaro and pray for him a lot. Enough said there.

So good night everyone until tomorrow night. God bless us all.â€

To Mike Rea’s family, I deeply regret your unfortunate experience while reading the comments here. New Bolton Center briefly provided a link (now removed) to this site, where I learned of Mike Rea’s accident. Having read the comments here during the past week, I certainly understand your disappointment with many. You have my continued prayers for Mike Rea’s complete recovery and for the meeting of your every need.

My thanks to Tim, Alex, Michael, Peter, Ricardo, Dr. Kathy Anderson, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, all medical and support staff at NBC and the folks at Kennett Florist for your extraordinary efforts.

Deb G - I'm glad you said it and not me - I have a prolem with Bernadini for the same reason. I guess I shouldn't take it out on the horse - but just the same. We aren't on real friendly terms with his owners country.

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 10:02 PM

Prior to the Derby all they talked about was Barbaro - not much of a mention for Bernardini - Barbaro Barbaro Barbaro - so if anyone thinks that Bernardini is a better horse - is a horse ass! Sorry for my french!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 10:03 PM

Sally in Key West: I do have a grudge against Barbaro's team. Normal I guess, especially for someone in the military who has seen too much, and the reaction at the Preakness was uncalled for - they did not do it today....I felt badly for the Jackson, Michael Matz, Barbaro, everyone when the jockey was overly excited about winning, parading in overly fashion. I know it is a sport, but even in other sports, if someone gets injured, they stop the game or have respect for the person injured.....again, just my feeling...Sorry, I cringe to see Bernadini doing well....again, wonderful horse and he is guilty by association, sad.

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 10:04 PM

What---Nobody could beat our Barbaro. What do you expect from football or baseball announcers.
    Do they have a clue/
I just lit 5 candles for our Bobby. Keep lightening those candles it's going to be a long road for Bobby but it sure will be worth it when one day he walks out of NBC. I hope and pray for his recovery. I will light candle for WD40. I think I got that right. Heal Feet Heal. I know Bobby has lost some of his muscle but he hasn't lost his spirit. I love him even more. God Bless you Barbaro.

Posted by: Marilyn at July 29, 2006 10:05 PM

Bernardini's jockey should have jumped off the horse after the win and gone to see about Barbaro - that would have been the human and decent thing to do. Celebrate later. It could have been his horse - I bet he hasn't thought about that!!!

So you know people with broken bones that their casts are changed EVERY WEEK?-temp is a sign of infection-more so that looking--vital signs and blood work ie.looking at whether there are too many white blood cells that is an indication of infection- Blood tests tell the story and heart rate and bp too -blood tests tell all-Didnt this infection occur after his right hind cast was changed????does anyone know that answer? You have your opinion-but I do not think talking negative about barbaro is good-it is bad-He does not look bad -That is negative-and that will do no good for him- He needs our hopes and our prayers -do not count him out-seems like there is a click in here and I thought this was for barbaro-to come together to help pray and send positive energy to him- am not here to argue just am concerned and Barbaro needs nothing new to fight-

BERNADINI IS A BEAUTIFUL HORSE, NOT AS GORGEOUS AS OUR BARBARO THOUGH. BERNADINI KICKED BUTT THOUGH, I'M GLAD HE WON. WHEN BOBBY WENT DOWN AT THE PREAKNESS, BERNADINI DIDN'T GET ANY KUDOS, ALL THE ATTENTION WAS ON BOBBY (AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN) I THOUGHT BERNADINI'S PEOPLE HANDLED THE SITUATION VERY WELL. I'M WATCHING IT ON TIVO AND HAD TO FF TO THE BIG RACE!! :>)

The celebration could have been done later or toned down OUT OF RESPECT FOR BARBARO, THE JACKSONS, MICHAEL MATZ, EVERYONE INVOLVED....An unbeaten named horse breaking down in front of a grandstand should have been respected - that jockey made my heart ill...and so did the crew - complete lack of respect.
I am not saying cancel the race, doesn't happen, but the situation warranted some respect for a champion.....

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 10:09 PM

Unfortunately horses don't get a say in who owns them.

Posted by: marie at July 29, 2006 10:10 PM

    Drew,
Most who post here wish nothing but the best for Barbaro, Mike Rea, other horses with difficulties (or worse), and now even each other's families and pets and even so far as prayers and gift baskets, etc. sent as group effort.

Incessant banter? Sure, some of it is. Levity can be quite comforting when one is worried.

Bickering, yes, there's been that, too...also happens when people are worried.

Do I think too much of the former has been displayed here? Not really. The latter? Most definitely.
However, I do not run this site, so it's not my call.

I surely do, however, enjoy having 'met' neat people from all walks of life, pulled together for positive purpose. I'm thankful for the influence, too.

Pamela: Exactly the point!! Who were those horses making him look so spectacular? Nothing. Of course he looked good...he was even in 3rd gear because he did not have to use any other gear against horses who only race in 2nd gear.....nothing wrong with the horses entered just the speed the go.....Now, if he raced horses in 5th gear.....well, enough said.

Melissa, that poem is so beautiful. You should send it to every doubter that thinks our Bobby isn't a winner. You have touched the essence of what he is,bravo to you!

I read Mr. Matz's comments, and my heart broke for him.I think everyone that has every loved an animal knows how he feels. You don't want to let your guard down and have the hurt be that much more. I know deep down he is hoping and praying for things to work out. So, it's up to us to keep the faith for him and BELIEVE in our Barbaro and know the circle formed above with all the angels old and new are watching over him from high above the rainbow bridge, willing that miracle we all so want. With all the bad things happening in this world, he is our little piece of what is right with the world. An innocent creature who knows how much we all love him from near and far, and knows how important it is to fight and not give up.Each day that passes he gets a step closer to that miracle. Each day that someone new prays for him, it's another voice being heard. God listens to us all, sometimes we just don't understand the things that happen, like this accident. I believe something good will come out of it. Bobby is teaching us that right now. As long as I have a breath left in me, I will never stop BELIEVING in you BARBARO!

I guess there is no more updates for today- maybe later. Here's to another good day and another night filled with the sweetest dreams possible. I'll try and come back later. I'm off to light my candle now.

I must congratulate Bernadini on his win today. We can't blame him for the way his team acted following the Preakness. Nothing can compare to Barbaro's win in the Kentucky Derby against 19 other fantastic horses though. I didn't agree with the anouncers today saying that Bernadini's win in the Preakness was as impressive as Barbaro's in the Derby. I don't know how you can compare it because Bernadini didn't get to race against the best horse, Barbaro.

It broke my heart and just wanted to let everyone know what I had read...

Whether or not you are a participant, we should all be concerned.
I hope that each person will take some time to
read the update at Mike's site and appreciate this family's valiant struggle.
He and his family deserve our love, respect and

    RE: Bernadini

    Talented horse. Not Barbaro, though.

Here's a theory why the media is talking him up--now that Bobby is retired, racing is looking for another standout to promote from this year's three-year-olds. Lava Man, who's up for Horse of the Year, is 5, and many of the other Derby entrants haven't won big races (except Jazil, but he's out with an injury, and Showing Up, who SHOULD be getting more attention!!).

Posted by: Susan E. at July 29, 2006 10:24 PM

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 10:25 PM

I am very glad that the races were safe today. Bernardini ,I wonder what his real name is - Bernie? - is a very talented beautiful horse and as such is pure and innocent. I wish him well. But I know he would never had beaten our Bobby.

Maybe some cards of encouragement sent to Fair Hill would help Michael some. Just like evrybody else, he has pressures and worries and gets tired and down. He also has good days and not so good days.

Hey Cheryl...I am not mad at Bernadini...I am mad at the announcers for implying that he is better than Barbaro...IMHO, when you compare the quality of horses in the Kentucky Derby to the Preakness...the Derby horses were fresher...and, more numerous, if nothing else...Bernadini beat
a few horses on a sloppy track today...I don't think he is better than Bobby, but ,then,I am so predujiced! Tee hee...

Posted by: Susan in TX at July 29, 2006 10:31 PM

Alex - comments well stated. I thought the winner of the Diana most impressive coming from way back to win hand ridden.

Bernardini may be a great racehorse down the line, but as you stated in the updates who did he beat? The announcer got more exited then anyone when the field hit the stretch.

My immediate thought was that there was a possibility that the 2 B's could have the potential for a great rivalry, but then again, who did he beat?

When I was younger, my brother always had Dr. Fager, and I chose Damascus. These rilvaries can become draining, and I don't even own a horse!

Anyway, to me, the real champ is in another great race in PA. Judging by the reactions on this board, it's a race that he's going to win handily.

Was it War Emblem or Empire Maker that also had Saudi ties?

Bobby, hope you had another good day. You must feel great after your bath!

    I've got a question:

I have a general knowledge about tack, but I've
been seeing a rubberband looking strip
around the bottom lip / under the chin of some racehorses...

Is it attached to the bridle or bit, and what is it for??

    Sweet Barbaro-

I'm sorry you won't get to beat the pants
off of Bernardini... that would be a sight to see ...rest up, grow more hoof and heal...goodnight

    Thanks-

Mike's family then
posted an update on Mike's website apologizing for intruding, so to speak...I was shocked, so I posted the above let people know what happened...

It is really great news that Barbaro is doing so well, he is a very clever horse that understand what is the best for himself, I an quite sure he will get through this.
Just a little funny thing, as I went through the starting list for the races on 3rd August on my "home" racing track, Ovrevoll in Norway I just saw that a half brother of Barbaro is running there, his name is Kingsword and he is 5 yrs, so sons of Dynaformer is also runnig in Scandinavia, this one is trained in Sweden, but he do not seem to be the best son he has produced. Anyway, just wanted you to know as I thought is was fun.
Again, I am following Bobby a few times a day at this wonderful site, and I keep all horse friends on this Island informed about his condition, and will be watching the result of his Scandinavian brother on thursday.
Keep strong Barbaro and let us have good news every day from now on.
    Kind regards from Tenerife, Spain

PAMELA, I KNOW, SOMETIMES I CRY WHEN I WATCH THE BARBARO VIDEOS, IT WAS SO WONDERFUL TO SEE HIM RUN, HE LOOKED SO HAPPY AND HE MOST DEFINITELY WOULD HAVE WON THE TRIPLE CROWN, I HAVE NO DOUBT!!

CHRIS, MAYBE SOME OF US SHOULD SEND MICHAEL CARDS, I HADN'T THOUGH OF THAT- YOU MADE A GREAT POINT THOUGH, I'M SURE THIS HAS BROKEN MICHAEL'S HEART.

It's hard to watch the media focus on another horse. Bernadini is beautiful but I think we all know who we are partial to. I'm happy everyone ran safe today but my heart is with Bobby. It's hard for me not to think about "what might have been" had Barbaro been able to finish the Preakness. I have been able to put those feelings behind me and focus on his recovery but seeing Bernadini win today kind of brought all that back. Once again, I just needed to get this out and I will continue to put my energy towards our Champion Barbaro.

That is a good idea...Dr. R is in the spotlight and everyone knows he is very concerned, but Michael has really been suffering in silence, hasn't he...I think a card is nice!

    Maybe...Barbaro, horse of the year...
Michael Matz, trainer of the year...

Posted by: Pamela at July 29, 2006 10:37 PM

Melissa - Barbaro sure is hotter than his daddy. Dynaformer is a beautful horse - he did get his attitude from daddy- but his beautiful color from his mommy.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 29, 2006 10:37 PM

Bernardini is a beautiful horse, and his dominating performance was a sight to behold. BUT.. my biased heart says Barbaro is the champion (remember, undefeated in his 6 starts), and I'll never forget his "sublime performance!"

Love ya Bobby :) Please stay with us.

All...I read a quote somewhere after the news conference where Michael stated something like "It is all starting to catch up with me". Not sure of the exact words but watching these other horses race and Bobby is at NBC in a sling has to be really hard on him.

Woo-hoo!! Bath day Bobby! Hope it was relaxing and enjoyable! Did they remember to wash behind your ears? :)

Sleep well tonight baby boy. Rest those legs of yours so they can heal. My thoughts and prayers are with you...as always. I love you Bobby!

I posted an apology on Mike Rea's site. Perhaps others could too????? I am not telling anyone what to do, but the apology might be a nice way of showing how much we truly care...
gosh, that is horrible that happened....

Again, constantly stating to others to STICK TO BARBARO issues only is telling the person posting that what they are saying is NOT important...very hurtful...

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 10:43 PM

I sent Michael Matz a nice letter a few weeks ago. I told him all about how I first came to love Barbaro. I tried to point out all the positives about our boy so he could think of those when he felt down. I most of all wanted him to know that while I pray for Barbaro at night I also pray for him. I feel so bad for Michael as I'm sure Barbaro was like one of his children.

Logging off and shutting down now. ANOTHER bloody thunderstorm. I sincerely hope we don't lose power here in St. Louis again. The power outage from 10 days ago didn't get fully resolved until this morning. Sigh.

Posted by: Anna at July 29, 2006 10:46 PM

Marie: I agree. Barbaro was very special to Michael. I believe it has been said moreso then any other and that Barbaro was a "Once in a Lifetime" horse for him.....Extremely hard. I grieve HARD for my dog I just euthanized after 13+ years with him and it was a "once in a lifetime" for me. I cannot even babysit my neighbors dog as it hurts too much to be around a dog I feel is of NO COMPARISON to my beloved Kaiser - it hurts badly. So, for Michael to continue with so many other horses on a daily basis, all the while having that strong connectin to Barbaro and seeing him struggle with his most incredible race of a "life"time...is so hard for him....

Deb g I already posted an apoligy and told them they were welcome to this site because they were part of our family. I'm glad others are too - I'm sure they enjoy our being silly from time to time. We do have a good time here - hoping and braying for our Barbaro - we also pray for Mike's recovery - that is all other these postings.

Thanks, Sue W. I hadn't seen my question asked anywhere else. It's unusual to have open access to the people closest to a famous horse the way this site does. It's great to be able to ask Barbaro's connections pretty much anything, don't you agree?

I sent the Jackson's an email following Barbaro's injury. Around May 25th stating how badly I felt for them and knew the feelings as my dog was struggling. I had to euthanize on May 31st and hold on STRONG to Barbaro's struggle and pray for his recovery....It has helped my healing....ok, that spilled some strong emotions!!

We don't even know this horse personally like he does. We are all very optimstic here - so we need to pass that on to Michael. Are we signing our names or are we signing the Barbaromanics?????

Deb G: Funny I sent the same - My precious dog was failing, and I knew a tough decision was coming - Bobby's struggle and recovery really were important to me getting through it (I had to let her go June 5) - I so needed a miracle, and the Jacksons, M. Matz, Doc R and most importanly Bobby have given us a chance to get one - unfortunately, its a bigger miracle than we first thought we were hoping for with all that went on 2 weeks ago...But let's not forget - It's the Undefeated Barbaro, in a sublime performance...

Sally in Key West: Horse to track? Some folks have horses stabled at the track, others ship them in, usually on the day of or the day before....depends on where they are coming from. Some horses are nervous so they come in the day before or even earlier to get a calm....just depends on the horse, the trainers, etc....yuu can go home when you are done! :-)

Posted by: Deb G. at July 29, 2006 11:10 PM

A question for the knowledgeable horse folks - do you think that the medical team is so guarded about Barbaro's prognosis because of his current conditions, or because of possible complications that can occur? (i.e. laminitis in another foot, etc.) If the laminitis does not spread and his right leg looks to be healing properly, do you think his prognosis would be better?

Posted by: Morgan at July 29, 2006 11:10 PM

Marie: Thanks, very hard. I look forward to the pain to ease. For any pet owner who has lost a pet, it is VERY hard. Especially after having him for more than 13 years...like losing a son...
I keep going with other things though - like work, home, horses and now I look forward to my horses racing this fall!!!

I want to say again what a great job I think NBC is doing to give Barbaro every chance of recovery. I also think that the people who have been close to Barbaro are contributing to his being a happy horse, in spite of his condition, by visiting him so often. That's got to make a difference! Hang in there, Barbaro! Thanks, Alex and Tim, for updates.

I have a horse question, if anyone can help. Following Barbaro has brought out my desire to have one of my own. I took most of my riding lessons on a pretty arabian mare, and I loved her. Someone recently told me that Arabians are not smart horses. Since Barbaro is a smart horse, and Thoroughbreds descend from Arabians(?), I'm not going to accept that comment without further research. The mare I learned on didn't seem dumb, and she was affectionate. Does anyone have experience with Arabians they can share with me? Just a few words would be appreciated. Thanks.

I went back and reviewed last night's events with great interest. From what I read, I don't think people were saying to "stricktly stay to Barbaro issues" ,I think they were objecting to all of the constant back and forth CHAT, while trying to read through and gleen information from the real COMMENTS, posted by Barbaro's adoring fans.
Any reference to information about Mike is certainly something that true Barbaro fans would be interested in.
The "chatters," with their ignore buttons and such, simply refuse to get it. Some people might have a lot of horse savy, but some people don't know the difference between COMMENTS and CHATTING. It IS real simple...OMG...I just got sucked into the CHAT! (sorry)

    Dear Friends:

Can someone tell me about the care and condition of equine teeth?

I remember looking at newspaper photos over many years. of bathing sessions before and after the race, and it seemed that the teeth appeared stained or potentially troublesome--in stark contrast to everything else that was groomed and immaculate about the horse.

Let me say right now that Barbaro is such a beautiful creature I have no doubt that HE has a killer smile.

Melissa-What a beautiful poem. I think it captures ((((Bobby's))) story perfectly. Thank you for sharing. :)

Mike Rea and Family-Please know I wish you nothing but the best. Alex and Tim have gone out of thier way to keep us updated on Mike's condition. I would love nothing better than to see a picture of Mike and (((Bobby))) together again at Fair Hill.

Was that Michael Matz congratulating Bernadini's trainer after the Jim Dandy? It sure looked like him from behind.

It should be about time for (((Bobby))) to slip out of his sling for a good nights rest.

Just want to say that no horse has touched me so as Bobby has in recent years except Afleet Alex. I last heard he was retired due to an injury and I hope he is enjoying his life. He almost won the triple crown! I still get all choked up when I think about how his connections and the little girl Alex came together through her lemonade stand as she valiently struggled with what no child should ever have to.

Doe any of you in the horse world out there have any current news on him ?

Edie...thanks for the website. I will be clicking away to see what is going on with my state reps and H.R.503 being they are not as people friendly as Margot's reps.

Marlene, it is irronic how you posted about the slaughter of horses right after my son called me. He also told me about the 3 slaughterhouses here in the US and how they are being slaughtered. I am so sickened by their methods. It has to stop! My son is pushing the issue much moreso then I have been. He called me to tell me there is an article in Sporting News about our Bobby and then expressed his discontent with slaughter. I do not know how right he is, but according to him, all slaughter of horses will not be stopped by the ban.

Precious Bobby, I have been here seems like all of last night and today. Great news on you, hope you get a good night's sleep. I am sure you are so relaxed after your bath and feeling good. Keep up the good work big guy and enjoy your night. Healing prayers to you!

    Carly:

You asked the 64,000 dollar question. So let me tell you what I think (which may not be an awful lot...)
    1. Do you have a regular trainer/teacher? If so have them help you check a horse out esp before buying. Arabs by nature are high spirited. Not the greatest for beginners but it depends on what kind of rider you are.

    2. Do you have a stable where you can board her/him? If so, they may well have a good horse for sell or know one that is.

    3. Don't forget you need a vet! This is probably one of the most important person's in your little network. The vet may also know of a great horse that would fit your needs.

    4. Depending on your situation you may need access to a feed/tack store. If you board elsewhere than home the stable may provide hay as part of the board cost. You pay for extras--like grain and nutritional supplements.

    5. It never hurts to ask if you can lease the horse for awhile--a couple of weeks or a month. That way you can try him out in several different situations as well as getting the all important vet check prior to that final payment.

    Hope this helps some...

Arabians are very smart horses! Haven't owned one but know people who do. I have always owned retired race horses that have been retrained. The actor Patrick Swayze has always owned them, not only are they smart but they are beautiful. They have beautiful expressive eyes and beautiful manes and tails. It seems each breed of horse has something valuable. It would be fun to do research to see which breed is best for you.

To me every horse is beautiful. To own one is the most magical experience,

I too am going to send a card to Michael. I think it's important to send one to Peter as well. Remember this article and his pain:

And to our friends who lost their beloved dogs recently (and all those who feel their pain) my heart goes out to you. I still well up over my beloved cat I buried in 1990, and hubby and I lost two out of four of our cats within four months last year. I have three angels buried in the backyard. Please consider taking another companion at some point. It is NEVER a replacement, just another soul to love and there are so many who need homes. I got a rescue kitten last Christmas who so appreciates his home and the feeling is awesome. Was it Mary L who said earlier that out of one awful experience comes 100 positives? So true. Heartsick to lose my little loves but the happiness we shared so enriched my life. Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all...

Pam, yea, they ALL deserve to get bracelets. Everyone of them do. I would love to give Michael another super horse also. But we are going to have to settle for something else, and I just don't know what is good enough. I just know if I was Michael, I would be sick and devestated and a basketcase. I don't think I could have handled it as well as he does, but he seems to be good at holding things in. I can wholly understand making himself ready just in case the worst thing happens, because you don't want it to hit you all at once. He is probably afraid to think anything different. Going to the hospital and seeing him loose condition and not knowing from one day to the next what the vet is going to say is very straining on one's emotions. What do you give somebody who is going through all that?

I feel so much for Michael Matz and I totally understand where he is coming from when he says what he does. As I have said in the past I lost two ponies to foundering or laminitis. Michael mentioned he lost two other horses to laminitis. After losing my ponies I told my dad I wanted a horse cause he had said horses don't get foundered. So I bought a quarter horse. How I loved Paco I bought horse shampoo I gave him baths. He was around 3 years old. Paco well he got excited when semi's would drive down the highway by the pasture he was in. Well my dad had put the wire fence across so he couldn't go into the barnyard but he did not show Paco that. A semi came down the highway and Paco went galloping along the fence line like he always did only thing is he went to run up to the barn. Well Paco went airborne over that fence. I was so worried that his leg would be broken. It wasn't but he had a cut and needed to have stiches so the vet came down and he got stitched up. But I was so afraid that something bad was going to happen to Paco I have to admit I kinda gave up. I knew he needed more attention then what I could give him. So I sold Paco to a young man who did the rodeo and he used Paco for in the rodeo.

I quess what I am saying is after you have lost a horse or a pony to a disease like foundering (laminitis) its hard. It hurts so much to get your hopes up and then to have them crushed. Ever since I learned laminitis was the same thing as foundering I started praying that Barbaro would not get it. Cause I knew it took the lives sometimes of the horses and ponies that got it. When they had the press conference two weeks ago I cried and I cried. My heart broke. I felt my prayers hadn't been heard. But I keep praying and I keep lighting candles. I will not give up on Barbaro I love him so. It is even harder when they are so young. The last pony I had was only 3 years old. Three years old he had his whole life in front of him. I have never forgotten Cocoa. It was just so unfair. With all Bobby has been through it would be just so unfair for this laminitis to take him from us. I will keep praying and lighting candles. God took my Cocoa from me I am hoping that he will not take our Bobby.

Michael Matz I know how you are feeling and I understand. It is not that we ever really give up on one of our animals but we do need to be realistic just in case things don't turn out the way we want. We do it to protect ourselves. I just think it is important that people understand how a person feels.

    Hello everyone.

One the way to Philly Park today for Pennsylvania Breeders Day, I got a flat tire. So I did what all crazy horse racing fans would do....crossed my fingers and kept driving on it. Got my car to the stable entrance, left it there, stopped in the barn to see my babies and then went to the races.
Saw Tim Woolley saddling Redaspen in the paddock and would have loved to say hello. But race day is no time to bother a trainer so I didn't.

Caught up with the guy who has the teeshirt I wanted and now have my very own "My Heart was with Smarty, My Dreams with Alex But....My Prayers are with BARBARO teeshirt.

I was able to admire my teeshirt for 2 hours after the races while I waited in the stable parking lot in the heat for Roadside Assistance to take care of my tire!

To answer your question, if the distance is not to far the horses come in that morning. For big races where horses come from far away, they come in a day or two early. For the Kentucky Derby and Preakness type of races, many are flown in. So they come in sometimes a week in advance. They go out on the track in the mornings for their gallops. It is actually more important for a jockey to be familier with the track than the horse.
You are correct, they cool out, are washed down and walked for quite awhile before leaving. But they do leave that day. I can attest to that fact because, as I was sitting in my car at the stable gate, I watched all the trailers pull out!!

Most tracks have a special barn where horses stay that are there for the day. It is called the Receiving barn.

I hope this answered your question and wasn't considered "idle chatter"!!

Horse Dental Care: Horse teeth are not things of beauty - They do get stained, even at a young age - Horses do get a lot of dental care though - The fiber in the hay causes the teeth to grind down unevenly and get points and hooks that can effect their ability to break down their food - The end result: you get their teeth floated - The vet comes in with a huge file (or uses a powerfloat) and files down the points - It can really affect how they hold their weight to have their teeth in good condition...

Thanks, Margaret and Karen M., for the info. I think a lease may be a good way to start, to make sure I'm up to the task. I do know owning a horse is a lot of work. I'm glad Arabians are smart, and that they're spirited is good to know. If I do choose to own one, I think I'll look for one as far along in it's life as I am in mine, needs a good home, and is happy with walking trails. I'm sure, in the end, the breed won't be as important as I think. Thanks for the replies!

    Thinking of you, Barbaro.

Thanks Shelly A for the info. I appreciate it. It seemed to me that they would have to go to the track a couple of days prior to get used to their new envirnment - Running the track is good for them as well as the jockeys who have to get them around the track. Makes sense. So you go home the same day - intersting - I would think that they would stay one night and rest and relax for the taxing trip home.

Thanks again. I learn so much from your postings.

The problem with Bernardini winning the Travers is that now he will be the front runner for Horse of the Year. Had he even come in second or third it would have helped Bobby's chances. Especially with Jazil out for a while due to injury.

I know that we all think Barbaro should be HOY but with this win today, it really lessens his chances.

Posted by: ShelleyA at July 29, 2006 11:57 PM

Yes, we need new pictures of Bobby. A little upset w/the Barbaro update at the Jim Dandy, so short and non-existent. Heard he's lost some muscle so he's obviouly not at his best, but still..

Posted by: Elana at July 29, 2006 11:59 PM

    Pamela:
Dental Care. You should have a vet come in and do rasping I think its twice a year. They have to sometimes use a twitch on the nose to distract the horse. And then they use a what looks like a big finger nail file and float the teeth down.

This is done because horses teeth never stop growing. And because of this they can't chew their food up properly. This can lead to colic, food will just pass through and not be digested properly. They can lose weight and condition.

Once the teeth are floated down (all sit nice and even) you should see a change in the horses condition.

Not sure about daily or weekly brushing. I know I never did--and no one I knew did this. But that was long ago...

Now I can say for sure that they read these boards I have no idea but a part of me thinks that from time to time they might. They need our support through this and by being here for Barbaro and for them that is the greatest way we can show Michael, the Jacksons, Peter, Edgar and all of them that we care and that we are here for them. There isn't a gift you could possibly give to someone going through this. Being there for them. Praying for them. Thinking of them. That is the best thing we can do. They know they have our support. Just as this website where we come to get updates from the folks who go and see our Bobby is so important to us and means so much to us that words just really can't say it enough that is what our support and our being here means to all of them. They know we are here whether they read these post or not the fact that we are here day after day and we are supporting their horse and supporting them that is the best thing we can give them. In the past sometimes the Jacksons have posted on other boards their gratitude for all the support and it has been mentioned on tv different times. I think our being here and our continued support is the best thing we can give them.

    To Carly L from Michigan:

Congratulations on your decision to purchase a horse. Might I suggest purchasing an older horse or pony. Most often these "seniors" are docile, and well socialized. The most important thing , thought is that OLDER HORSES REALLY NEED GOOD HOMES. Saddly, they are the ones most often deemed worthless and expendable.

They are often in need of a bit more Vet monitoring, but they do offer a lot of pleasure and love. A flashy Arab is beautiful, but a gentle older horse or pony makes a great first horse. Good luck.

See, all of the help and good will from this site...(BARBARO's GRACE) is offered on behalf of his kind. It is available because of our love for him.

The year Smarty Jones won the Kentucky Derby AND the Preakness, Ghostzapper went on to win HOY. It's not always about the sentimental favorite and I don't think it has anything to do with earnings. It's voted on by the sportswriters.

They could split it like they did with Smarty. They gave him three year old of the year but Ghostzapper got HOY. Of course, it's different in this case because Bernardini is also three years old. Ghostzapper was older.

How do they pick HOY? Is is strictly on wins? money? I wish it were on how the horse brought the people together. Then we would know for sure.

Morgan: I think its a little of both - Even when Bobby was doing great, Doc R remained cautious because he knew complications could occur - and they did, and we were all heartbroken...Bobby still has to get fusion going in his right hind, has to grow a hoof on his left, has to not get any infections, has to avoid "L" in another hoof and other things that can go wrong... The good things happening take a long time - the bad things can happen fast - and so they remain cautious, and they want the world to know that things can still go wrong...That doesnt mean that they aren't happy and pleased with where he is now, under the circumstances - I think we could feel that this week - Just that they know there is a long road ahead, with twists and turns and potholes...

"Ladies and gentleman... Elvis has just left the building. God bless and goodnight."

Regarding Afleet Alex: If I'm not mistaken, he is now standing at Gainesway Farm. Try gainesway.com for info. Also, if you go to afleetalex.com, under "News", there is a good article written about his career and retirement, and a retirement announcement. If you google him you can also find more articles about his retirement.

He was also a very special horse, who had the ability to inspire others like Bobby does. I was also impressed by his "recovery" in the Preakness...remarkable.

Again, warm thoughts go out to Bobby, and Mike Rea and family. May the night be short and sweet, leading to another good day for all.

Thanx Alex for giving us an update on our sweet baby, Barbaro. I'm so glad he had another good night. When he does, it gives his body a chance to do it's thing and I know he's doing all that he can to help! WAY TO GO, BARBARO!!

For the person who asked about Afleet Alex, I used to visit his website regularly but after he went to stud, they didn't update. If you've never read Afleet Alex's diary, you're in for a treat, if the website is still up. I don't have the url but if you google him, it will come up

Dear sweet Barbaro, I am praying for you every day. No matter how long the road, I'll be there with you.

    Goodnight babycakes.

I am going to head home now to spend some time with my two fur babies. I have two cats Sugar & Spice they light candles for Bobby also. I was away from them when we took our trip to Chicago so I need to go spend some quality time with them now.

Everybody here have a nice night and will talk to all in the morning. Remember to keep the light burning in our candles.

Hi Barbara: Yes, you're right we ARE very lucky to be so close to the people so involved with Barbaro...They are so kind and giving of their time to us, I know we are very grateful.

Carly: You asked about Arabians..I'm not an expert, but I used to own a horse that was half Arabian and a horse I currently care for is half Arabian. Both very smart horses, very personable and the quality I like best is they were/are very "talkative". Always nickering to you, the one I care for now, calls to me when he sees me walking up the lane or just hears my voice in the barn. I know other breeds do that, too, but I always felt that was the Arabian coming out in both of them. It seems like being half Arabian gave them a lot of the good qualities but not quite as high strung..

Afleet Alex is at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky where, I understand, he is living a happy life.

I was lucky enough to "meet" Alex because I was friendly with some of his people. They really wanted to continue his career as a four year old but a fracture of the cannonbone would have required a long recovery and it still would have been dangerous for him to return to racing.

The ironic part is that I was at the Eclipse Awards in CA with the Smarty people that year. The same year that Smarty got three year old of the year award, Alex was nominated for the two year old of the year award. That was where we all got together.

But he they are both well and happy in their new homes. And I must say, BEAUTIFUL new homes!!!

haven't had a chance to ask you but have read all the horses you mentioned do you own all of them and how lucky you are to be involved with them. They are my passion. At the moment I don't have the honor to be a "caretaker" (owner)
but that may change if I need to adopt one to keep it from going to slaughter. My last retired race horse was 29 when he died. I owned him 15 years. What stories I could tell about his personality and his beauty. Raced under the name of Journey To Joy. What a joy he was too.

To All: I would like to try to provide some resolution in regards to Mike Rea's sister posting on this site as I feel it has gone overboard with what actually happened.

Mike's sister was online reading posts from 3 a.m. on, she read a post from ONE person in regards to posts being kept to Barbaro and praying for him. See Update 22, 5:14 a.m. when Mike's sister posts a thank you. She even gets a favorable comment. AT NO TIME WAS A POST DIRECTED AT HER IN REGARDS TO KEEPING POSTS TO BARBARO. It was never said to her, but only in context BEFORE anyone knew she was on the board. Thus, her comment on the Mike Rea site was in regards to her reading the post (singular from what I see) and feeling uncomfortable at the thought she might be intruding. I believe too many on this site feel others posted against her or at her - this is untrue. Unless I am completely missing something.

I hope this settles some confusion and hurt feelings and we more than welcome Mike Rea and his family here and apologies to his sister for feeling she might be posting inappropriately, but please know folks that NOONE posted against her.

Linda G, Thanks, that was just my thought in my last post (older horse for older lady). You are right, the breed will probably be the last thing on my mind if or when I do buy one. I've had a lot of animals in my life. I hope I'll know the right horse when I find him or her.

Barbaro, you've had such a positive effect on so many people that the world is a better place today because of you. Our history books will talk about a magnificent horse who brought a lot of people together in their love and concern. Hoping you have many more years of history to write! Love you, horse.

WOW, check this out: Bernadini's owner was hit with a medication violation!!! Figures...

Thomas Albertrani, saddled the Preakness victor Bernardini and then was promptly suspended by the New York Racing Association for a medication violation. He cried innocence, saying that the banned substance mistakenly contaminated one of his steeds in his Belmont barn. Way to bask in the glory, Tommy. Nice job. Prado is up, and that's a major plus, but unless I get 10-1, I'm passing. If the track comes up wet, don't play this colt at any odds, for he will finish up the track.

To rescue a horse is the most wonderful thing you can do. You should be very proud.

I do have three horses but they certainly are no where near the caliber of a Smarty Jones or Afleet Alex. I was just lucky enough to know their connections and be able to get close to these tremendous athletes. It was a wonderful experience and one that I will always cherish.
Even if they did both bite me!!!

I love my horses but am certainly realistic enough to know that you can't even say their names in the same sentence with the likes of those two or Barbaro.

Posted by: ShelleyA at July 30, 2006 1:13 AM

Bernadini has a Beyer speed of 104 at the Withers stakes - not as good as Barbaro and never will be....Bernadini has not raced much.....Her performed very well today, but only at an even pace, and against horses which are not known and not very fast....

Posted by: Deb G. at July 30, 2006 1:17 AM

    Hi Morgan:

I'm sorry I probably understood the question better than I gave an answer for. I guess I just don't want to talk about the possibilities.

The answer is really both I think. Bobby was critical a couple of weeks ago because severe "L" which is what he has--they'll know in the first few weeks what direction things are going to go. Sometimes they know faster.

The fact that Bobby is showing growth in that foot is a good good sign. Bobby has to regrow that foot to be released from NBC. But these things take a LONG time.

He also has to have that pastern bone to fuse. Somewhere on todays posts is an explanation of the pastern bone. Quickly it is the slanted bone between the ankle and the hoof. The ankle is called the fetlock, the hoof can also be called the foot.

There is a mare in Kentucky (Dancinginmydreams) that had the same break that Bobby has. She spent 13 months in the hospital--but she has had I think 3 foals now. They had to find her kind of a special home--a farm that could handle a mare with special needs. Point is--she made it. She has successfully foaled 3 times. And her caretakers are aware of her needs.

Bobby will be taken care of I know. Whatever his medical issues will be--his owners will see to it that he recieves the care that he needs.

Bobby remains in ICU because--other horses can infect him with whatever they happen to be carrying. And the weakess part is the part where infection will grow. It's more to protect Bobby than to protect other horses from him.

I hope this helps some. More questions? Ask away!

Maribel: Did you see the post I just sent, it was meant for you, but I forgot to put your name on it...re: Bernadinis speed. Beyer speed goes by each race and is not always consistent. I was on the bd the night Mike Rea's sister posted. Nothing negative was said to her. As far as I could tell, she only received one response which, as Debra G. has said, it was "favorable". That was my response, and this is what I said to her:

"Cathy Rea Bosley, I'm definitely including Mike in my prayers to AFFIRM his healing too. Our physical eyes cannot see the miracle unfolding, but our spiritual sense knows that it is happening.

Try to rest and find peace in God's Loving Protection for Mike.

"Be still, and know that I am God." In other words, be peaceful, and do not doubt that God is in control of Mike's entire body and bringing it into complete harmony."

Posted by: Loretta at July 27, 2006 05:30 AM

A poster earlier that day had specifically requested that I consider praying for Mike because of my deep faith. I told that poster that I definitely would. So I was happy to have an opportunity to be on the bd at the time Mike's sister, Cathy, posted, so that I was blessed and privileged to be able to respond to her.

Lisa, thank you for sending the picture. The bracelets look great and can't wait for everyone to give the nod to go ahead with them.

Alex, as always, and know it sounds redundant, but thank you for the updates.

Read Michael Matz's comments about Barbaro...it does remind us to enjoy these days with Barbaro, as it is a "long" process. The difference? WE are all here for Bobby and his entourage!!! All of them.

So, Barbaro, blessings tonite, sleep well, continued healing and visualizations for healing on your right and left hoof. May the Light of the Lord surround you, Bobby!

This is the reason we need to STOP telling others what to post....folks jump on here and only see part of the postings......

I feel NBC took this site down due to a misinterpretation by Mike's sister. I read her post to think someone had posted negatively to her. In any case, again, Mike Rea and his family are LOVED by all here and this has been a confusion for sure and we are all being black eyed for it.....

Mary Langenkamp: Sorry if I misspelled your name, Mary. But, I love your posting about Michael Matz and how he feels and being realistic. Nicely done, Mary and thank you.

In fact, many thank you's to the horsey people. I sure have learned alot.

You are all great and glad to be a part of this great group!

Posted by: Debra B. at July 30, 2006 1:29 AM

MArie - I'm so sorry you had to see that - you must have been devastated!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 30, 2006 1:31 AM

Maribel: I agree. I know Bernadini LOOKED like he performed well, but the horsey folks must know who he ran against - nothing.....making him look better. He looked like he did it with ease because he was not running against anything....

As my trainer at Aqueduct always says - racehorses only have so many races in them. You can train them forever and at the end, genetics and what they have inside moves them on....Conditioning certainly helps greatly, but when it comes down to it, they run given the genes they are given and what they have...and again, they only have so many races in them and then they lose that same speed. It does NOT last forever....

Okay, what can we do to make it right? Having Mike's sister think that gives us all a black eye and makes this site look really bad.

Sorry if this has been posted. Interview with Michael Matz today at Saratoga. He continues to be a class act, a champion who trained a champion, and one that continues to maintain an optimistic, but cautious outlook for Barbaro's recovery.

There's a rainbow after every storm. Sometimes I forget. I come here to remember.

Shelly A - post a coment on Mike's website - apologizing for the remarks made and tell them they are part of our family - that is what I did and alot of others. Thats all we can do right now.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 30, 2006 1:35 AM

Shelley A: I think we are doing what we can to make it right with posting apologies....I just feel it was taken above what it really was. Heck, I was thinking all this time that someone was posting back to her rudely.....not the case.

I know you saw that trail of posts too - just a mix up....

In the JIM DANDY ...Edgar Prado rode Minister's Bid which placed second to Bernardini.I'm sure Edgar was doing his best with what he had to unseat Bernardini ...knowing what is at stake for BOBBY !!!! There didn't seem to be much competition to quote someone eelse's comment earlier !!!!! NO BOBBY...THAT'S FOR SURE!!!!

Given the immense strain the Rea family is under - they are also probably very tired as well - it is just extremely unfortunate that for even one second they felt not welcome and ill at ease.

Deb G. As you well know, I have NEVER told anyone that they can ONLY post for Barbaro. That is not my style, and has never been. You continue to want to distort my posts, even though I supported you a few days ago when another poster maligned you, as you are doing to me. All I have ever posted about was healing thoughts for Barbaro and to keep the board positive for Barbaro. Do not say untrue things about me or lead people to think I would do that.

Barbaro, sweetie, you keep on being a happy horse and have a wonderful night with restful, healing sleep and dreams of the sun on your back. I see you sleek and strong in a meadow next spring. Know how special you are, beautiful boy, and how much you are loved. I'm going to light a candle for you now, and I'll see you in the morning. Much love and light.

    Goodnight, Everyone.

-Bernardini's handride today was almost awesome. (shhh-I am whispering so Bobby won't hear) I am surprised that I allowed myself to watch him, as I refused to watch the "YOU KNOW WHATNESS" ending in May. He is quite a horse, if I do say so myself. Our big Boy still would have taken him, THAT is a GIVEN!

Melissa-your poem is too good, and I have now gave up my quest to finish mine. I cannot in good faith attempt to come near the excellence of feeling you give in yours. I am humbled by you, I am bowing to the queen of poetry....

To Mike Rea's Family-How distressing it must be for you to need comfort and find only dissention and backbiting whilst looking. All of us here are not zealots, or weirdos, we applaud all your strength and love your courage. We all hope and pray for your entire family to move forward and recover in this long and slow process. We all support you, and wish you to take care and bless you all.

BARBARO-BIG OLE BOY-YOU ARE SUCH A DOLL!!I SAW YOU TODAY ON THE TV, AND YOU LOOKED SO PRECIOUS IN YOUR SLING, DR. R. WAS TALKING TO YOUR BIG OLE SELF...TAKE GOOD CARE OF THE GOOD DR. BOBBY-THE STAFF & HIM, THEY ARE KEEPING YOU SAFE!!! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.

    Believe In Barbaro

Posted by: jeri at July 30, 2006 1:44 AM

If I'm not mistaken, the #5 horse was Brother Derek, and there's been much speculation as to whether or not he clipped Barbaro.

Maybe he did, maybe he didn't, we'll probably never know and at this point, it doesn't really matter. All that matters is here forward.

that said, I'm back to the drawing board, so to speak~
    g'night, Barbaro, sweet dreams...

    g'night, y'all, same to you~

    Please, all. Let's not.

They say there is shadow on the video so that it is inconclusive if Brother Derek clipped Bobby.

Posted by: chris byers at July 30, 2006 1:45 AM

Marie - I hurt for you - to have to hear that - oh my god. I'm so glad I'm hear to pray for his recovery - no pain - no gain - I'm not being a bitch - I mean it - if he has to go through a little pain than the gain is definaely worth it - and he is gaining on us every day. I'm so proud of this horse - I just can't put into words.

    p.s. Dora Crow~
write your poetry. It doesn't matter whose it compares to, or doesn't. What matters is that you feel it and express it in a way that holds meaning to you.

Posted by: Anna at July 30, 2006 1:47 AM

Just my two cents - Dr. Richardson stated that he believed Barbaro was clipped. Pimlico stated is was CONCLUSIVE that Brother Derek clipped Barbaro, but the commission made it inconclusive. Several officials watched frame by frame in SLOW MOTION over and over again and said it was conclusive that Brother Derek did this. I actually hope he did so that Barbaro does not EVER get known as having a genetic fault.....especially for breeding purposes later....also, Brother Derek's owners/trainers gave him a month off to take nuclear scans - meaning EVEN THEY MIGHT BELIEVE THE HORSES CLIPPED....

Saw the Jim Dandy and Bernadini is impressive. He's their Big Horse, Bobby is our Big Horse. Had Bobby made the Preakness, he would have been side by side with Bernadini, looked him in the eye took off looked back and would have said "Eat my dust". Go Bobby!

Mike, Keep positive & recover - think little *can dos* each day! ... Am so happy you heard our FINDING A FOLKHERO IN BARBARO. www.campaignforbarbaro.com is asking SPRINGTIME to contribute to both Barbaro's & your recoveries.

Here's a song from the "CELTIC WOMAN"(CD)-these 5 ladies are incredible & sang here in New Hampshire for their 1st US tour of America March 14, 2006. Their performance of "You Raise Me Up" inspired us to leave you for now with another song they sang...

    Title: The Soft Goodbye

'When the light begins to fade -
And shadows fall across the sea -
One bright star in the evening sky
Your love's light leads me on my
    way -

There's a dream that will not
    sleep -
A burning hope that will not die -
So I must go now with the wind -
And leave you gracing on the
    tide -
Time to fly, Time to touch the
    sky -
One face alone with a haunting
    cry -
One song, One star burning bright
Let it carry me through darkest
    night -

Rain comes all over gray hills -
And, on the air is soft goodbye
Hear the song I sing to you -
When the time has come to fly -

When I leave and take the wind -
And, find the land that fades
    away -
The brightest star in the evening
    sky -
Is always never far from me...

The brightest star in the evening
    sky -
Is always never far from me!'

(The Soft Goodbye by David Downes, C. Ni Dhubhghail, D. Agnew, & B.McCrea)

Maybe a family member can pick up a cy at Barnes & Nobles. Believe its featured there in their music selection.

For now, Barbaro's New Hampshire Ambassadors will leave you with warm thoughts for a bright day and evening. See yourself recovering in your mind, Mike. You are not alone in this. Carole is recovering from major jaw transplant surgery from a nasty accident which broke her jaw. She recovers with you & Barbaro each day better too!!! A soft goodbye for now to you all, God Bless!

Also, horse people, can you answer me:

Why do the horses in the training photos have the martingales, or whatever they're called; but they don't wear them while racing?

Posted by: Susan E. at July 30, 2006 1:55 AM

We should not "dislike" another horse like Brother because of a accident. how cruel that is!! I am sure he did not mean for that to happen, and he is a great horse in his own way!! All horses are.. but we should not hate him for that.. All racing horses have a good quality about them some are more so than others..

Janet: Thank you for the link to the interview with Michael Matz. Your words are so true. He is a class act!

There has been a lot of talk on the site tonight about who is the better horse Bernardini or Barbaro. Here is the last part of the interview.

I'm anxious to see the race," Matz said. "Bernardini's a real nice horse. It sure would have been nice to see them run against each other; that's never going to happen."

Matz was asked if part of him was rooting for Bernardini to lose so that his chances of unseating Barbaro as 3-year-old champion would diminish.

"Right now, I'm more worried about saving his life instead of whether he's 3-year-old champion," he said.

Chris Byers: Your post below is curious, to say the least, given the fact that you used extremely foul language on the bd last night for which one poster rightly reprimanded you...and that poster was not I.

"Given the immense strain the Rea family is under - they are also probably very tired as well - it is just extremely unfortunate that for even one second they felt not welcome and ill at ease."

Posted by: chris byers at July 30, 2006 01:39 AM

I'm sure the use of curse words and screaming, such as you engaged in last night, would make anyone feel "not welcome and ill at ease." You might want to think about who might be reading this board before you speak like that.

If you think your foul verbiage and gross demeanor on this board is respectful to Alex and Tim, you are most sadly mistaken.

Instead of focusing on slandering others who have done no harm to you, it might be wise to rethink that. Please respect the owners of the site, and others, and realize that behavior such as that only reflects on your apparent poor upbringing and lack of manners.

There is no reason why folks cannot be polite on this board and refrain from the use of curse words. I certainly did not appreciate the foul language you used with me. I would not speak to anyone in that manner.

Posted by: chris byers at July 30, 2006 2:01 AM

Hey,horse-people: I'm pulling for Barbaro too.
He is definately THE Horse of the Year! His racing days may be over, but his work is not done. He will be responsible for so much good to come from his misfortune. His life now is so much more important than track speed records, or a fat purse. He is an icon...His life and struggle are a source of focused inspiration. He is a one-in-a-million horse.
Wouldn't it be great if there was a source for finding out the actual eventual destiny of EACH thoroughbred's life...Some sort of registry that would give the cause and manner of demise. Too many "historical" or "thoroughbred heritage" type sources are too vague in their reports.
This might seem morbid, but the fact is that racing's dirty little secret IS the eventual outcome for horses like Whirlaway, Excellor, PharLap,and Ferdinand. Not all are so fortunate as to live a full lifespan in loving retirement, and the world should be able to see this.
There is no one answer for the problem of too many horses, and too few homes. Horses can live for up to 30 years. They are expensive and not always easy keepers.

Perhaps one remedy can be found on the breeding end of the spectrum. Perhaps there should be a limit placed the actual number allowed to be bred each year. I know that the "industry" will bristle at this, but, let's think of each of the lovely "someones" involved here, who end up in a "someplace" of loneliness and pain. Too often, their published story ends at a breeding farm, but we know, from Ferdinand, and Excellor, that their story does go on...often to a tragic conclusion, that nobody wants to talk about. It an issue that the industry is lothe to address.
I want to know what happened to Whirlaway, Ridan, Riva Ridge, Nasrullah, Sham, Tim Tam, and the many other magnificent horses who gave their all...what happened to them? I want to know that there is a complete life record that is just as precious as their pedigree. We bring them into the world to be used at our pleasure. Don't we owe them a full and dignified life, with a proper rememberance?
Barbaro, and Afleet Alex are two of the lucky ones...for now...but where might they (and others) be years from now, when the public's attention is on some other shining star? Where will Smarty be? Where is Gato de Sol and Cannonade?

Barbaro's own half brother, Kingsword is in Norway...I fear for him. There will be no way to trace him in a land where, they eat horses...don't they? Does the horse world care?

Big questions..a disturbing subject, yet Tim's Barbaro comment site offers at least one opportunity to open the subject for discussion.

Barbaro's legacy is more than speed, courage, and beauty. The horse-world will never be the same. He has brought so many people together...both horse-people and people who never had any interest in horses before.
    His story goes on.....

Posted by: Lyn at July 30, 2006 2:01 AM

Which way did he go? I'm sure he is still saying it.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at July 30, 2006 2:02 AM

ya run in a big group, sometimes 'bumps' will happen. Horses, people, snails.
Shelley's right, jocks of this caliber would not intentionally take such risk- not only with their mounts- but their own lives. The horses are just doing what they're trained to do. Run.

    nighters.

Everyday I long for encouraging news about Barbaro and even when it seems to be, we all know that a medical threat may be lurking imminently. It is so draining living with this anxiety, as I have wrapped up so much of my spirit and belief that in this troubled world, there are miracles of an innocent creature overcoming the odds. My personal journey with Barbaro began when I instinctively chose him to win the Derby without really knowing a great deal about him or the other horses. When he won and I saw him on TV, he immediately captured my heart with his beauty , majesty and regal presence. As I watch him injure himself in the Preakness, I was shaken and knew he had sustained a life-threatening injury. However, with the magic of medical care overseen by Dr. Richardson and the wonderful trainer, owners and jockey's love and support , I was so hopeful he would recover. Again after the setback, I was devastated, but was glad no one was giving up on him. Barbaro has become an inspiration to so many and has brought out the best of humanity in rooting for a horse just because he is God's creature. The Washington Post article made the excellent point, that we all root for him because we need to . Whatever,I hope and pray that all of our common beliefs and hopes for this great horse are realized and Barbaro will survive. Go Barbaro!!

    Here is a brief explanation:

Andrew Beyer is an expert on horse race betting. The Washington Post's horse racing columnist, he invented the concept of speed figures and the system used to generate them. By calculating variables such as a the track conditions and the horse's time, Beyer speed figures give a measure of how fast a horse was in a given race. This number can then be used to compare a given horse against it's competition in an up-coming race, despite the fact that the horses' have all run in different races, at different tracks, and are different calibers of horses. Speed figures have come into general usage and many racing forms include them in their publications. Beyer is the author of several books on this topic.

    KarenM,
I recently saw a segment on Animal Planet's "Animal Cops Houston," where their lead investigator Jim Bauer(?) with the Houston SPCA, went to a horse sale, and purchased several horses that we destined for the slaughter house. He then had them boarded, until he could find good homes for them.
Since you live in Texas,You may want to check with them if you are looking to adopt one.
It is so heartwarming to know these wonderful people do so much, and so well, to provide a good home to these, and other of God's most precious creatures.
I ususally have much difficulty watching these shows, but I guess that particular night I felt the need to have my heart ripped out.
Good luck with your search. I wish I had the means to have one of my own.

    A REFRESHER FOR YOU!!!!

THIS IS WHAT HE ASKED FOR:

a couple of board rules seem necessary, and this is not targeted at anyone, but I think if we follow these basic rules, dialog may return to singularly focusing on Bobby, his recovery and all the good Bobby can do (and learning about horses / racing) ... so not so singular, but there we go!

    a. please try not to offend

    b. please do not be offended (ignore / no response is better than responding to being offended)

    c. please don't write about bickering, it can only make things a little more tense.

in the meantime i plan to learn more about Messaging, and Bobby's groom and hotwalker for everyone.

Speaking of beyer speed, an old article (pre-Preakness) which speaks soundly of Barbaro's speed and STAMINA. Guess I'm still pondering over Bernardini's impressive win.

"But Barbaro has the whole package. He is fast enough to run with fast sprinters. Yet he possesses a strong finishing kick and a pedigree that suggests he will be even more effective at longer distances. His sire, Dynaformer, is one of America's leading sires of distance runners."

Caution..a little sad to read, cuz what could have been.
