Barbaro Updates: 29

updates are now here.

Update 354: As we wait for the press release from New Bolton I thought I would highlight some more content from the comments. Mike C has composed race calls in honour of Bobby, this is the latest (3:20 pm post time):

MORE OF THE CALL...And the horses thunder down the backstretch,Barbaro still has a lot of work to do", says Durkin. "He's back in the race, but he's not in his usual up close stalking position after the 2 disasterous mishaps in this race".As the leaders begin to hit the far turn Durkin is calling the positions of the horses in the race using names and colors to describe them in his adjective littered call.As he gazes thru his binocs and he gets to BARBARO, now in mid pack we pick up his call." And now BARBARO IS BACK,here in mid pack an unlikely spot in both a bad and good way, he's usually close to the pace but with what happened today its already an amazing comeback.Edgar pulls down a pair of goggles and he almost seems to be smiling now, WHY COULD HE BE SMILING??.DID WE NOT SEE THE BEST OF BARBARO ALREADY TODAY??.Edgar still has a handful of reins ladies and gentleman meaning he still has a ton of horse under him"..This could be a comeback of TITANIC proportions, Edgar is smiling like a guy holding 5 aces, he knows he's on a time bomb here waiting to explode, but after all the hardships thrown BARBAROS' way just how much is lift in the tank???.But by the look on Edgar's face, and determination in BARBAROS eyes I'm not willing to bet against the miracle we may just see here today".....The crowds roar heightens with every stride of the horses,you can now hear cries of "C'MON BARBARO,LETS GO BOY" becoming more evident above the thunderous roars of the thousands anticipating the tremendous finish that lies ahead.....

Bobby left this poem (1:36 pm):

Barbaro In The Hospital

I hear the cottonwoods
whisperin' above
Barbaro, Barbaro
horse that we love

the breeze from the paddock
keeps murmuring low
Barbaro, Barbaro
we love you so

Does he really know
through his trials we go
with him each day
our hearts beat so painfully
when in his swing
he sways

But in time we know
our Barbaro
will always prevail
He's never lost
no mind the costs
his spirit will not fail

So in miracles
we never doubt
and will love him each day

until he's healed
and it is time
Mighty Barbaro will
proudly walk away

Update 353: This site was featured in an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer today: To check up on Barbaro, check out his blog. I wanted to thank Mike Jensen for the great story, and Michael Bryant for the cool pictures (they are in the real paper, page 5 of the sports section). The paper actually has a more complete story than the online version. I see the online version is also available via mercurynews etc. I really appreciate the coverage! As I am sure people are aware, this site would not be possible without the support of many, I am going to name some, but no doubt will forget others who are important: Michael Matz, Peter Brette, Kathy Anderson, Tim Woolley, Eliza, Jen, Annie etc. Mike and Michael, thanks for coming down to Fair Hill.

Update 352: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (monday night). Michael Matz gave me the update as I was heading out to the track on my third set this morning. It was good to see Michael back at Fair Hill.
Kathy Anderson visited Bobby yesterday evening and also reported that he was doing well. He was in good spirits and looking for a good rub which he of course received, in the form of a massage from Kathy!
updated Tuesday morning 7:35 am

Update 351: As we wait for an update this morning we have an article and a new poem. The DailyLocal.com: Vet: Barbaro's smarts aiding his recovery, is a nice article on the intelligence of Barbaro, and how he has adapted to his current situation, it quotes both Peter Brette and Kathy Anderson. The following is an excerpt:

"Barbaro is not aggressive, but he is very confident," Anderson said.

"He has always been in charge of his space, and he continues to assert that at the hospital. He's become known as a sneak biter. When people turn their back on him, he tries to bite them. They turn around and he's like, 'Who did that, butter wouldn't melt in my mouth.' I think that's pretty clever."

Anderson added: "He's adapted to the sling. I like to think he understands that if I shift my weight this way, I feel better. I'd say that's not typical of racehorses. They're so competitive, they just react, rather than having a planned action."

Bernell Kress could not sleep, so wrote this for us (Posted by: Bernel Kress at August 1, 2006 05:00 AM):

You are the wings beneath our wings,
But, no longer will you fly.
You've captured the hearts of all with a soul,
And we are content with gazing in your eyes.

You are our hero, don't you know?
With courage and fight deep in your soul.
No one can say what you think in your mind,
You're an old sould, Barbaro, perhaps that's what keeps you ever so kind.

Intelligence far beyond your years,
Your eyes reduce us all to tears.
If we could take your pain, it would be gone,
And you would once again be flying along.

Your perils have brought so many close,
We light your candles from coast to coast.
Sweet Barbaro, please have no fear,
Cause all that love you are so near.

So rest and heal, oh ancient one,
You've been here before and you're not done.
You are teh wind beneath our wings,
And when you fly again, your world will sing.

Update 350: Barbaro had another comfortable day (monday). I just spoke to Peter Brette, who had spoken to Michael.

It turns out the winner of the Mike Rea Mustang is a presenter for HRTV! Congrats Becky!

We are planning our second vigil for saturday. While Bobby has been maintaining his comfort and has shown some positive medical signs, we know there is a very long road ahead, the vigil should help us stay focused on his well being and progress. 7pm saturday, whereever you are, whatever you are doing, think of Bobby.

I mentioned to Peter while we were chatting this evening about the interview I conducted with Tom Albertrani (update 348). Peter of course knows Tom as Peter also used to work in Dubai. He only had good things to say about Tom.

Finally, another beautiful poem, thanks TLC (from updates 23 10:44 pm):

Work is slowing down a bit now and I just wrote this sitting here at my desk:

BELIEVE

Brought into this world,
learned to walk then to run,
admiration of beauty
racings devine son.

He ran with such grace,
superior to all,
until tradgedy struck,
will we watch the son fall?

No, his owners and trainers agreed.
This son is too special,
he has more heart than speed.

And the world embraced him,
prayers and good thoughts passed his way,
A nation of believers,
thankful for each and every day.

So when life gets you down,
and things seem a "no go",
Believe in Miracles
Believe in Barbaro

Thank you Alex...amen. You are so terrific, honestly a big hug and kiss for you.

You certainly have enriched many of our lives with this connection, thank you for putting the time and effort into this project. It is a huge undertaking and time consuming I know, but just know I appreciate it.

I do have one question. On DailyMotion, shannonb. from Canada has a video. Do we have a link to it on our Fan Media...I love the French sung in the song, etc.

Thanks,

As long as Barbaro still survives I pledged to myself , I would write a wish or thought each and every day, no matter how busy I was. When the update did not appear earlier this morning,my heart sunk; I take nothing for granted as a change could take place so quickly for the worse, while good changes will take so much time. I know that I have the patience and determination to follow the news on Barbaro, and continue to pray and wish for his recovery. I know that I am not the only strange person who is taking such an intense interest in this beautiful creature, as Barbaro has come to symbolize so much that enriches the human spirit.

Good Evening Bobby,

Way to go little friend! Another day under your reins( well, can't say belt, after all you don't have a pair of pants to hold up now,lol).You keep up the good work, you can do it. I know it's hard,but just know we are all here with you every step of the way. You have a good nights rest and have sweet dreams. Tomorrow is going to be even better, cause you have all these other days to look back on and see that. Remember I BELIEVE IN YOU ALWAYS-BARBARO!

Posted by: Debbie Jurasus at August 1, 2006 12:12 AM

I'll be keeping the vigil as well at 7:00 on Saturday. Think it is time that we joined together to send some new waves of positive healing energy to our boy. What good manners and adaptability he has shown. He's been confined some 70+ days and still maintains the same grace and good humor. What lessons he is teaching.

Another night of sweet sleep is yours tonight, Special One. Until tomorrow, keep feeling our loving spirits.

Good Night, Everyone.

Good Evening, Barbaromaniacs!

Am back from a grueling yoga class and catching up on the posts. To those who have submitted questions for Alex when I go to Fair Hill on the 12th, have written them down...anybody want to meet me there? I'll remind everybody in a few days. Let me know.

to those who have requested to read my story...will send from my gmail address as soon as I post. Thank you for reading it...

Sally in KW, thank you for your "review" of the story...is everything OK down there??? How hot is it???

Mary L - let us know how you are feeling.

Hooray for China cat...!
TLC - loved the poem.
Lit my candles before yoga (almost missed the class...sheesh)
Prayers to Mike Rea for his continued recovery and to his family for strength and faith.

I saw the cbs video of Barbaro and Dr. R. earlier today. His eyes are so beautiful. There are so many animals whose eyes look right into your soul...horses and cats are two of them...

Now for the best part...:)

Sweet Barbaro, its nearly bedtime, yes? Hope you had a wonderful day and that your healing is progressing. Grow hoof, grow...fuse bone, fuse. We'll look forward to tomorrow's update from NBC...in the meantime, hope your sleep is deep, restorative and filled with dreams of the day you go home. You are my sunshine...

Healing to all,

Barbaro in pants - interesting idea - why type of pants would he wear. I'm thinging Docker's - khaki colored - pleats in the front. Tight in the butt - he does have a nice horsie butt. Perhaps one of those navy blue nautical belts. Of course a hawaiian shirt! or maybe a pinstrip button down collar - what do you think??? I don't think Bobby is a jean kinda guy - I could be wrong. Boxers or briefs????? hahahahahaha

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 1, 2006 12:17 AM

Thanks for the great poem TLC!!

As far as the vigil goes, count me in. Every since the first one, I have stopped what I was doing every Saturday at 7pm eastern and said a little prayer for Barbaro. And in between, lighting candles w/ a short, positive thought for this beautiful horse.

My daughter who is 4, calls him Bar-bro, hey bro, keep having those comfortable nights!! She also used to ask why I check this website every morning . . . now she tells me, don't forget to check on Bar-bro!! :-)

KEEPING THE FAITH in San Diego.

Beautiful poem -- Believe in Barbaro. Thanks TLC for posting it and whole heap of thanks to you Alex for keeping all the Barbaro poems at the front pages so everyone can sit, muse, relax, be inspired and uplifted before the start and end of a long hard day!!! Keep reminding us that when we think we're having a tough day, we think of Barbaro and is heroic fight and then my day seems lighter just knowing Barbaro is doing alright and another step closer to the day he will come back safely home and really enjoy fullness outdoors again.

He is just so tolerant and adaptive to his lifestyle in the moment -- How many of us can do this? His wisdom is beyond measure, that is why he is America's (Still think NATIONAL) treasure for uniting 50 states to pray as one for our naturally heroic Champion Son.

Believe in Barbaro. Guys and Gals check out www.campaigningforbarbaro.com. They've added some new Barbaro stuff -- it's really cool. What a small world we live in. My mom (not horsey at all- but still interested in Barbaro) has a friend here, who I needed to talk to about some art stuff. We haven't met, but visited for quite a while- and wound up on the subject of Barbaro. She is from Kentucky, so she watches the Derby each year.
I know it's not a big breaking news story, but it made me grin.

Good Evening Barbaro(maniacs)!

Another hot day here in Dallas Big Guy! I know you are cool and comfy inside, maybe by the time the weather cools off a little you can start going outside a little. I keep thinking about you having a "Mr. Ed" type stall, with a half-door you could open with your nose if you wanted to look outside and maybe another you could open if you wanted some attention from the staff! We know you are smart enough to learn how to do it! If you had a "Call Nurse" button in there, I bet you'd ring it off the wall to get some petting or treats! Anyway, since you can't do those things, just hang in there (literally or physically) and follow doctors orders! I'm gonna be working a lot the next few weeks but I will check in as often as I can. Be strong in spirit and body, we are all holding you in our hearts!

SamIam: I think the video you are talking about (I believe in you) is actually the one I made..lol

How funny is that!

Here is a direct link you can bookmark

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x55fv_barbaro

Debra B/OH: On dailymotion, ShannonB in Canada who has the video, is me :) and yes Alex kindly provided a link to it on the fan media page. It's the same link I provided above for SamIam.

A few words about that video, it was not even 2 weeks since the accident, and I was in full blown Barbaro dependancy. He was on my mind 24/7 non stop. If people wanted to talk to me they better have something to say about Barbaro or I wasn't interested.

I have mentioned this before, that the thing about Barbaro, which we have all experienced, is that he literally "grabbed" me and would not let my mind rest for a minute.

I decided to put together this video journal of Barbaro because I thought it would be therapuetic for me and help settle my mind. Which it was, but it didn't, and I tried :)

Having said that, I am glad you liked the video.
And when I had to break away from Barbaro to get married on June 24th, When I had my first dance with my husband (little does he realize ) we danced to Barbaro's song..hahahaha!

Evening, all!

I'm so glad to hear that Bobby has had another comfy day. Keep fighting, Big B!! You've got a long way to go, but each day brings you closer to walking out of NBC!

Life is such a fragile gift and I seem to be reminded of that every time I begin to take it for granted. I lost my Dad (my horse confidant) when I was 12, my Mom not quite two years ago, my two dalmatians (my kids) in 2003 and 2005 and now I've got a best friend from college who's Mom was just diagnosed with bone cancer and my own Aunt who has been diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer.

Normally, all of this would have me in a cynical tail spin, but Barbaro's miracle in the making and the positive energy and love I've been privy to on this site keep me grounded, focused and positive. I owe you all a big thanks for that!

I'm so grateful to have this outlet - even though I read alot more than I post. It's a very comforting place to come to. Thank you, Alex, for doing what you're doing!

Have a peaceful evening!

Bobby, hoping to hear a good report tomorrow from the docs at NBC. Sweet dreams!

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Seventy two days have passed since they ran the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore. Michael Matz relives it every day.

His mind wanders back to that glorious Maryland afternoon when everything that was supposed to go so good went so horribly bad.

Matz is the trainer of Barbaro, the horse who made a nation cheer when he dominated the Kentucky Derby. Two weeks later, on May 20, the country wept when the brave horse broke his right hind leg in three places, and, appeared likely to be euthanized.

"One minute you have the best 3-year-old in the country and the next ... you are left out of the picture," Matz said early Saturday morning, standing along the rail at Oklahoma Training Track. "At one point I thought I was going to win the Triple Crown with this horse. Then I thought we were going to have to put him down."

Barbaro continues to fight for life at George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa.

Matz didn't visit the ailing horse Saturday. It was the first time since the accident he hasn't stopped by. That's because he was here, running two horses in races on the Spa card, neither of which won.

Matz, who groused about having to deal with the press day after day during the first two legs of the Triple Crown, was anything but miserable when three writers asked for a few minutes.

He smiled, stuck out his hand and talked about Barbaro for 12 minutes.

While some thought the 55-year-old Matz was robotic during his daily press briefings during the Triple Crown, on this day he spoke from the heart.

His eyes squinted in the bright morning sunshine when he explained how Barbaro was dealing with the injuries to the right hind leg and the laminitis that crept into the left hind a few weeks ago.

Other horses would have been long gone by now after suffering such catastrophic injuries and setbacks. Barbaro continues to fight, something that pleases and perhaps even motivates Matz.

"Physically, I was never tired dealing with this," Matz said. "Emotionally, I didn't know what to expect. If any horse can get through this, he can. That is what I have to keep hoping."

Matz can visit Barbaro because he lives only minutes from the hospital. He is amazed by the courage Barbaro has shown, far more impressed with it than any of the six races he won before getting hurt.

He is also moved by the outpouring of love and affection from people from coast to coast, who wanted to do anything to help him, make him feel better. When Barbaro got hurt, the country felt the pain.

When it was announced that Barbaro had laminitis -- a painful, often fatal disease caused by uneven weight distribution -- a few weeks ago, New Bolton Center was overrun with deliveries. Baskets of apples and carrots and oats and flowers and mints all found their way to Pennsylvania. A restaurant in New York City shipped in bagels for the hospital staff, another bought breakfast for four days.

People sent letters -- Matz has two boxes full of them. Some offer advice, all give support.
I have just never been around a horse that has been so popular," Matz said. "Even outside of the racing community ... I took the kids to a Phillies game a while back and we were just sitting in the stands watching a ballgame on a Saturday afternoon. Three people I didn't know just came up and asked how the horse was doing."
Matz will be back home next week and will continue his vigil for Barbaro. He will always think what might have happened, that's human nature. Would he have beaten Bernardini in the Preakness? Won the Belmont? Who knows? Who cares?

"It would have been nice to see Barbaro run against Bernardini," Matz said quietly. "It would have been good for racing. But I'm not going to be sour. How can I be sour. The horse has done a lot for me. Now we are going to try and do as much as we can for him."

SUSAN W,

Hi Susan! Yes, that's me. I too still cry every time I watch it. The song is very special to me as it was my special song & prayer when my father was diagnosed with a terminal illness and passed away last October.
When my father was sick, I played the song every morning on my way to work and on my way home and every minute between. It was my fathers special song until Bobby came along. My father loved horse racing and I owe it to him for where I am today. I bought my first race horse about 1-1/2 yrs ago and was hoping my father could have held on to see her race. He would have loved to see Bobby win the Derby.
The day he died, I remember whispering to him to say hello to "Secretariat" for me and somehow believe he's sitting next to Roy Chapman who passed last February(owner of Smarty Jones)betting that BARBARO will be horse of the year. I thought he (my father) wouldn't mind me using the song for Bobby.
Thanks to Alex for posting it.

I don't know if you've seen the unedited version. If not, you can see it at www.campaigningforbarbaro.com.

Thanks Susan.
God Bless,

Karann - wasn't that a Burger King commercial? So cute - I could see the Jacksons driving along in their Mercedes with Bobby in the back seat - front hooves on the back of the front seat - wind blowing in his mane - horse laughing - enjoying himself !!! the Jacksons' in the front seats - laughing as well -- all going down a country road - all laughing their human and horses ass's off. What a picture that would be - I have it in my mind - and I'm laughing along with them!!

Bobby - can you just see yourself sitting in the back of the Jackson's car - I can - I'm in the seat next to you!!! Have a good night my sweet boy -- I love you - sleep well, good dreams (in the car) and good dreams of green pastues and hot fillies fawning all over you. xxoo and scrathies.

Remember that 2yr old Forestry colt that sold for 16million in March?? (still shake my head on that one)

Guess what they named him???? THE GREEN MONKEY!!

Boy I sure hope he lives up to that price and not a "dud"..

here is the news clip I found:

The Green Monkey, purchased for a record $16 million in March by the European-based Coolmore racing operation, arrived at trainer Todd Pletcher's barn from Belmont Park. The unraced 2-year-colt is expected to make his debut later in the meet, which runs through Labor Day

Thank you all for the additional information about the movie "Dreamer" ... I did know that the horse's name in the movie was "Sonjador" and "played" by a horse named "Sacrifice." I also knew about the mare "Mariah's Storm" from reading a little more about the movie.

I, also, was completely 'amazed' that this filly was entered in the Breeder's Cup Classic instead of the "Distaff" race, but I was wondering if she actually 'won' the Classic or if it was just 'poetic license' to embellish the movie. I guess I have some 'researching' to do on this.

To Bonnie ... I loved your comment that you "hoped that the "Big Red Horse" who knows something about laminitis would be looking out for our Bobby." My immediate 'connection' to Bobby was when he developed laminitis and all I could think of was my beloved "Secretariat". There is no doubt in my mind that "Big Red" is definitely Bobby's "Equine Guardian Angel" watching over him from "Up There!" No doubt at all!!

Thank you all so much again for just 'being here' ... I know I always have a 'home' to be among Bobby's Family ... we crazy, dedicated Barbaromaniacs! God Bless Us All!

OK ... going to light my candles now for Gratitude for Bobby's Healing ... Yes I see it loud and clear!!

Good Night, Sweet Bobby ... Sleep Well as Always with ACN ... and Good Night dear 'Barb-ies' ... sleep well also and I'll see y'all Manana!!

I found some great cards to send you, so you'll be receiving them soon. My Mom contributed to a basket so I think you might be getting that this week. I love you so, Barbaro. God bless you & grant you a wonderful healing rest tonight, & may you wake up feeling perky & better each day. I pray that you keep those bones knitting, fetlock fusing, hoof growing, & that God will continue to protect you from all harm or discomfort. I love you so Bobby. See you in the morning! Hugs & nuzzle, nuzzle...xxoo

Linda A. in Oregon--I was in NY last week, so I had a lot of posts to read when I got home! Nancy Babcock's article is on Update 27 dated July 30, 2006 at 3:28 p.m. It sounds like you were touched by the "Belle Story" like I was.

Julia B.--Hello to you!

Mary L.--My Best to You tomorrow.

Bobby--Rest peacefully. Know you are loved. Keep that wonderful attitude. I'm hoping for lots of hoof growth this week! I know you will walk out of New Bolton!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone,

Went back to school today (teaching) and our computers weren't hooked up, so I couldn't get any "Bobby news" until this evening! I'm used to checking in every couple of hours!

The poem was beautiful. Am glad to hear about the vigil on Saturday. Lots of love and positive energy will be sent.

Glad to hear Mike is doing better. Seems like he and Barbaro are on the same long road to healing--one day at a time!

I'm glad to hear Bobby had another good day--I can't wait to hear that everyday.

As always dear Bobby, love, care for you and those who take care of you, lots of positive energy and above all, Gob bless you and hold you safely.

P.S. Printed a nice picture of Barbaro and put it on my classroom wall with "believe in miracles" written on it!

Posted by: Barbara at August 1, 2006 3:28 AM

U R welcome Sally -it is all for the Love of Barbaro !

BTW - The poem posted in the updates today is great ! Thanks!

I just love all the creative good that has been inspired by Barbaro !

WEll, my husband is ready to trade me in - He has been neglected ever since the Derby when I get Derby fever - now that I have become a Barbaro groupie ( as he says ) He never sees me anymore

So I have to go now and pay attention to him !
Men -they just don't understand !

Good Night !

Thanks to Peter and Alex for the great updates, and to my neighbor, TLC, for the beautiful verse.

Our boy endures, a testament to tremendous heart and joy of life. Prayer and will are powerful, as is great medicine, but this boy has what it takes within. Let's all continue to focus on his healing, and continue to send all this positive energy and love to him and his people and the great medical team.

I keep thinking back to video of you, Barbaro, when you first awakened after your surgery and were being led to your stall by your fantastic Dr. Dean. I saw the look in your eye, and somehow, all the doubt and fear dissipated. I thought about that look when you had a setback a few weeks ago, and kept visualizing your calm, serene gaze. It said to me that you had trust, and you believed, and that we all should believe as well. I do. And now I visualize the day when you will leave NBC for your home, to live a happy life surrounded by love and loved ones.

I used to have talks like this with my horses. They understood. If you were to hear this, if someone would be so kind to tell you, I know you would too. Or maybe you already do. I think probably so.

You are very much loved

IMO there's a really ugly article up at Salon now (subscription or sit through the ads for a day pass): "They shoot racehorses, don't they? Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro will likely have to be put down. Will the troubled sport of horseracing meet the same fate?"

I'm not familiar with the writer; her bio at huffingtonpost indicates that she's a trainer.

from Salon:

"But six weeks later, reports of his seesawing recovery have all but vanished from the news, and a second surprise visit in mid-July from his jockey, Edgar Prado, was certainly meant as a goodbye. Walk into any well-staffed barn on a Monday and you'll be met with the same grave question: "Did they put him down yet?" The rumors in racing communities such as Saratoga Springs, the biggest summer racing meet in the U.S., proliferate. "They won't do it on a weekend." "The owner wants to let him go, but the insurance companies won't let him." "They should have done it right there on the track." "He's in a lot of pain, that's for sure," is the one you hear most from people who've seen horses "founder," or contract laminitis, which is the crippling disease that has afflicted Barbaro's injured hind foot. Michael Matz, Barbaro's trainer, says he's not getting his hopes up; Barbaro's vet at New Bolton, Dr. Dean Richardson, has said everything from "he looks good" to "he's doing as well as can be expected." Over this past weekend, the odds for his recovery were judged at 50-50. Nobody wants it to happen, but his demise is more likely than not, and New Bolton's expertise in putting it off shouldn't be taken as evidence that somehow, this horse can live through a trauma that only a handful in history have ever survived."

I'm not a horse person; folks here may know about the writer - I don't. So I may be making a big mistake even posting this. If so, I apologize - having lurked around her as long as I have, the article just struck me as, well, almost gratuitously mean.

just my 2 cents. back to lurking ...

I DON'T KNOW IF THIS ARTICLE WAS POSTED BUT HERE IT IS.

Faithful fans track Barbaro's every move
By Mike Jensen

The Philadelphia Inquirer

(MCT)

ELKTON, Md. - Part of the morning ritual now at the Fair Hill Training Center: Shortly before 7 on Wednesday, Alex Brown, a veteran exercise rider at Fair Hill, on a 2-year-old filly named Chappaqua, headed back to the barn from the training track when he passed trainer Michael Matz on his pony.

From his horse, Brown asked the standard question: "Do you have the news from last night?"

"Everything's the same," Matz, who had already spoken to Barbaro's surgeon, told Brown. "It's good."

Within a few minutes of the brief exchange, Update No. 316 was posted at www.timwoolleyracing.com: "Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (Tuesday night). Saw Michael Matz on the horse path as I was coming back to the barn and he gave me the good news."

By 7:35 a.m., a dozen comments were posted on the Web site, which originally had been set up for news about trainer Tim Woolley's small racing stable at Fair Hill, but turned into something else entirely after Barbaro's horrific accident at the May 20 Preakness Stakes. Brown's daily Barbaro blog is now a community unto itself, with an average of 10,000 to 12,000 daily visitors.

These messages immediately followed Update 316: "Hooray Barbaro! The miracle continues!" ... "Another blessed night you had." ... "Love you, big guy! If your cast is changed today, just hang out while Dr. R. does his magic." ... "Love those words - ANOTHER COMFORTABLE NIGHT!"

By 2 that afternoon, 298 messages had been left on the site. Some touched on anti-horse-slaughter legislation in Congress. Several were about the English jockey who head-butted his horse. Most were expressions of unbridled joy about the continued existence of the Kentucky Derby winner.

Brown, a 41-year-old Englishman who exercises seven or eight horses each morning at Fair Hill, and teaches Internet marketing at the University of Delaware, typically adds an afternoon update after speaking to Matz's assistant trainer, Peter Brette, or Fair Hill veterinarian Kathy Anderson. He posts the daily updates issued by the New Bolton Center and frequently links to media reports.

After developing laminitis in his uninjured left hind hoof several weeks ago - the site got about 16,000 visits the day that was announced - Barbaro still is far from out of the woods, so Brown makes a point of not speculating much in either a positive or negative direction. He used to post his morning updates from a computer at Fair Hill's clocking stand, but now he has a quicker system, usually calling a friend in Delaware who posts from her laptop.

"I always get a little stressed out until I've heard from Michael, because I know now that people are just sitting on their computer at 7 waiting for that update," Brown said. "If, for some reason, I don't meet Michael on the horse path, so let's say the update doesn't happen for another half hour or an hour, people get naturally concerned. `Well, he's not updated it - there must be a problem.' They don't recognize that the problem might be I just haven't seen Michael yet."

"He asks me every morning," Matz said later that morning at his barn, which is next to the barn where Woolley trains his horses. "I really didn't know how big it really was until we started getting letters."

For two years, pre-Barbaro, www.timwoolley.com got about a half-dozen hits a day. When Barbaro returned to Fair Hill as the Derby winner, Brown decided to do a daily blog before the Preakness.

"We got about 120 visits a day," Brown said. "I thought that was pretty cool."

After the Preakness, Brown put up a post about how "Fair Hill was completely devastated. ... I basically thought we were stopping. Who wants to exploit the situation?"

But people searching for information on Barbaro found the site. After Brown posted that Barbaro was in the recovery pool, "the site got 3,000 visits in an hour, and the site crashed."

Many of the visitors don't go to racetracks and really didn't follow Barbaro until the Preakness, but that wasn't the case for Vicki Jasch of Franklin, Tenn. Her uncle was a trainer of thoroughbreds in Maryland many years ago, she said, and she owns several quarterhorses and has experienced the pain that comes with serious injury. She was on Barbaro from the start. She saw his first race from Delaware Park, which blew her away.

"I thought he had a real shot at the Triple Crown. His injury really devastated me and hit me like somebody kicked me in the gut," Jasch said in an e-mail. "I have friends that say they want to go to New Bolton to see him. But I told them that they would have to dress like a carrot to get in."

Matz, who continues to stop at New Bolton daily, said he hasn't seen the Web site personally, but he still gets letters addressed to him or to the horse, so he knows the spirit of the messages.

"We've got a couple who were real bad situations, where people were just trying to get money out of the Jacksons," Matz said, referring to Barbaro's owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson. "But basically everybody's been real supportive and behind this horse."

Brown theorizes that Barbaro unfortunately may be more famous now than he would have been if he had gone on to win the Triple Crown.

"Even around the world - on Sunday, I found a news story in Scotland and one in New Zealand updating his condition," he said.

The regulars who visit www.timwoolleyracing.com already knew this. Brown noted it back in Update No. 302.

Goodnight sweet boy. Have a comfy night. You are gallant, smart, and so brave. You keep getting better and we will keep the carrots and the candles and the prayers coming. Goodnight to the Board--a peaceful night to all who visit here.

The miracle continues...Home For Christmas...

WOW, over 12,000 hits per day on this site. And to think it used to be a sleepy little "rural" cyber community. Before we know it, there will be an outlet mall here. :)

Is there any way to track how many hits are from the same individuals hitting "refresh"? :)

Quite a phenomenon, Alex. If you haven't already, you're going to end up writing the definitive internet marketing texts.

First, thanks to Alex for this site, I come every night, usually the last to post. I am keeping up on the big boy with this site and reading all the other posts as well. Seems like Barbaro is bringing together many people as friends that might not otherwise have met! That is a good thing coming out of all this!

I am grateful for the candle site too, as I lite one for Barbaro and one in prayer for my family, who are braving a cancer surgery of my daugher in law today,

I doubt that anyone sees my posts as they start a new one every day. but it still gives me comfort to come here and get the healing vibes that are flowing!

Have a good night Mr. B and start a fresh new day tomorrow!

Catch you on the back stretch!!

I have never in my life cried so many tears as I have for Bobby. And I've owned and lost many beautiful little friends who cannot speak for themselves. Like others, I just had a "feeling" right before the Preakness. Usually I am sitting down, excited but ready to watch a race. That day for some reason I couldn't even look at the tv during the post parade. I was pacing and nervous. When the breakdown came, so also broken was my heart. STAY STRONG, BOBBY. We are all so in tune with your beautiful vibration. Love is all you need... and you have tons of it from all of us who are spiritually connected with you. I will not be able to bear it if you leave us. You are the flame in our hearts.

It's getting late but I can't seem to stay away. My mom is here visiting me from out of town and the first thing I had to do was show her this site. I had her watch video of Barbaro's Kentucky Derby and some of the other videos people had made (Run for the Roses and more). She loved them so much and doesn't follow horse racing. We looked at pictures of Barbaro and she also said "there's a look there in his eyes". I told her that we all know. Something about him tells us he knows. Knows what a force he was on the track. Knows what happened to him, knows what he's supposed to do. Knows.

I have to travel to Seattle tomorrow and it will be my first day of not having a computer to check on Barbaro. I couldn't go to sleep cause I couldn't get Bobby off my mind so I wrote this for him and for us.

TLC and Bernal Kress - thank you for the wonderful poems.

Bernel - I had a similar experience of not being able to sleep until I had written a poem for Barbaro. He stirs something deep within, doesn't he? He has inspired some wonderful writing, both prose and poetry. That is part of the miracle.

To Bobby and all his Family,
Sweet dreams of green pastures and fresh breezes.Every day is a victory. You inspire us with your intelligent acceptance of all these medical procedures and your unfailing spirit!

BARBARO,You have so many fans,I'm getting 'goofed up'...(I love you honey)

Sorry Judy and Belle ..I thought you were Lyn and Belle....(that is why I was crying,read below and you will see what I mean)

I found Belles' story,hope its' okay to post it again...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
" My first and only horse was a scarred old Bay QH/Welsh that I used to ride at a riding stable. Her face looked awful, because she had a huge gapeing hole in her top lip, running up between her nostrils, from the misuse of a twitch when she was younger. Two days after the stable owners mentioned that it was going to be her "last summer," I bought her for $100, and they very kindly moved her to my grampa's dairy farm. My grampa had once owned two Percherons, so he was well able to help me care for her.
I never rode her. I figured that she had been "used up' enough by inexperienced riders, and laughed at, and neglected. At first, she was aloof and depressed. But after only a few weeks, she warmed up. She loved being bathed and brushed. I talked to her, and she would follow me around the yard. She also liked to just lay in the shade with the cows.
I am sure she was grateful just to be a horse. You could see it in the eyes of her poor deformed face that became more and more beautiful as the days of her time with us went by. Her name was Belle; which means"beautiful."
She had four more happy years with us, then the Vet suggested that we put her down due to lung problems associated with advanced age.
We buryed her on the farm, and planted a maple tree near her grave. Today, even though the farm is gone, the tree remains.
I will never regret not riding her. She did not want that anymore. She just wanted to be a horse. We were good friends. You see, SHE did not come into my life FOR ME, but I came into her life FOR HER.
Deb, I wish you well with your horse. I hope you find a happy solution for the both of you. DO listen to her. She will tell you what she wants. YOU are FOR HER. You will get a lot of help and good advice from this site...all because you, too love Barbaro.
Sweet Barbaro, thank you. Because of you, Belle's little story has come out from the depths of my heart, to be lovingly shared with many good people. If I close my eyes, I can smell her skin, and feel her forehead against my cheek. Thank you. (It had been too long).
WONDERFUL poem by BERNEL KRESS.
SO-OOO lovely. Brought even more tears to my eyes than the MAGNIFICENCE of watching BARBARO stride so easily ahead to win the Kentucky Derby - the replay of which I have watched so many times.
Prayers for Barbaro and all who love him
Wow, you guys! It's hard to get caught up here and actually work somewhere else a major part of the day... AND walk the dogs AND feed the cats AND clean the big birds' cages...
Howsomever, I had a wonderful birthday today, and at dinner in a restaurant I've never been in before, one of the women at the next table received a piece of cake with a candle in it - it was also her birthday, and the two groups of us ended talking of nothing but Barbaro. If we harnessed this power for peace, the world would be in a much better place.
Thanks so much for all the contributions, poems, race calls, essays - each and every one is so personal and so touching. Nancy's essay was beautiful and I read Lyn's story, Barbaro's Dream, (even though it took me four tries to get through the tears), and was blown away again.
I hope someone is compiling all these contributions in one place for use in the future. I thank goodness for the technological advances which have allowed us to communicate with each other and with those who can give us a bird's eye view of the actual events as they unfold (Alex, Tim, Michael, KF, etc.) - imagine this compared to Ruffian's d
