Barbaro Updates: 6

updates are now here.

Update 226: Barbaro had a comfortable night last night (Thursday pm). He slept about 4-5 hours which is a clear signal of his comfort level. He was out of the sling for most of the night. I spoke to Michael Matz to get this news this morning (he had heard from Dr. Richardson). It was obvious in Michael's expression that he was relieved to be able to provide this news.
Updated Friday 7:10am

Update 225: Must see: Web Extra: Latest Barbaro Video. It illustrates Bobby's use of the sling, his mobility and to be honest, the sharpness about the look he retains. He appears inquisitive (I noticed a quick "ears pricking" moment), and obviously loves the carrots.

Jeannine Edwards left this comment regarding ESPNs coverage:

Thank you for the kind words. Just want to let you know, in case you noticed and were wondering why Barbaro's tail looked so short in the ESPN footage from today (shot at 5pm by New Bolton staff) they had a rope around his tail when he was recovering from anesthesia Sat night (standard procedure) but it was a rough go, and most of his tail hairs were pulled out. As if the poor horse doesn't have enough to deal with! I thought he walked well, and New Bolton clearly shot the footage to avoid speculation that Barbaro may be suffering. His eyes seemed a bit dull and tired to me, but keep in mind he's on massive amounts of meds and was also sedated earlier in the day so they could work on his foot. He's been through hell... I think he looked good considering. I was happy to see him putting good weight on the left hind foot. He's a trooper. Very sad situation, but we must all hope for a miracle. We'll have more updates tomorrow from New Bolton.
Jeannine

Update 224: Barbara Livingston, whose Barbaro photographs (and all racing photos) are fantastic, just left the following comment and offer:

We are all so grateful for your updates and information. I start and end my days visiting your site nowadays - wishing all good things for the remarkable Barbaro.

I first became smitten with Barbaro last year, as his name is so similar to my own. When I finally saw him Derby week, I was thunderstruck. He was SO professional, relaxed, stunning - just right. To say he had 'the look' seems understatement. He is truly a once in a lifetime horse.

I told everyone who would listen before the Derby that Barbaro was like a different species from other horses - he could not lose the Derby.

And now we simply root for him to live.

I've had so many requests for photos that I added more to my site, as well as a couple of wallpaper patterns and two downloadable 8x10"s.

If any Barbaro fans would like to download them and print them for their own use, feel free. Please do not sell them, or make them into artwork, etc.

Depending on response, I'd be happy to add others. The address is www.barbaralivingston.com/gallery/barbaro

Again, we are so grateful for all that you are doing, Alex...as well as indescribably grateful to the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson, and everyone connected with Barbaro.

Take good care.

Barbara Livingston

Thanks Barbaro for your kind offer of your great work.

Update 223: Just spoke to Kathy Anderson (Barbaro's Fair Hill vet) who visited Bobby this afternoon (she was just leaving at 6 pm when I spoke to her). She said he remains comfortable, as comfortable as he was when she visited yesterday. She noted the many gifts that had been arriving for Bobby all day (I am guessing many of them are from people commenting on this site). Kathy fed some carrots to Bobby, part of a very elaborate gift sent by Margaret from Beaufort, SC. The nursing staff were also feeding him cut grass and corn husks (chopped up for him).

Update 222: New Bolton has released a copy of the transcript for today's press conference.

Update 221: OK, just returned from the Press Conference. I waited to watch Jeannine Edwards do her ESPN 2 broadcast. You can see the conference at CBS3. A couple of links to reports: Barbaro has life-threatening inflammation in hind foot and Doctors Say Barbaro Has Catastrophic Injury. And here is Laminitis in Wikipedia. A few observations of my own:

Dr. Dean Richardson is a class act. I was thoroughly impressed with his forthright discussion on Bobby's condition. He was clearly open, understanding of the media, and obviously upset with current circumstances. He and his team have worked incredibly hard, and this must be very tough for all of them at an emotional level.

Bobby is now a long shot to recover, but while there are still chances of recovery, and he is comfortable, they will keep trying. No one is yet giving up.

2 weeks ago Dr. Richardson really thought Bobby was going to make it.

Bobby now has a foot cast on the left hind, he also uses a sling from time to time. This sling is designed to help Bobby, it still allows him free movement.

The laminitis is catastrophic, and the onset of laminitis was very rapid.

Bobby looks good, he is eating well. He has a strong constitution.

The media asked good questions and were very respective of the situation (I was impressed).

Comments

alex, please clarify -- i thought i heard Dr.Richardson say that there was only 20 percent of hoof wall left, and the AP story cites that only 20 percent was removed????

Thanks for the quick post.

Thanks, Alex, as always - Dr. Richardson is truly a class act. So are you.

I have been with Barbaro every day since May, following his progress here. There have been many smiles and now I am in tears. Barbaro, we all love you and with all that love you just have to overcome this terrible setback! My prayers and hope have been and always will be with you for a recovery. You deserve to feel the sunshine, smell the grass, hear the birds and live a long life without pain. I will be here, as always, several times a day praying for your recovery.

I just went & lit 2 more candles. There were 575 from 8 countries when I left the site.
Prayer does work. I've seen it happen!!!
Team Barbaro, don't give up!!! We are all here for you!!!
Alex, thank you again for the updates!!!
My furkids think I'm nuts for sitting here bawling...will continue my vigil.
Bobby, we love you, sweetie!!!

Barbara, better to check the conference feed, I am not sure (I did not jot a note down on that point, not that I can read my notes anyway). To be honest I was less concerned with detail, and was just trying to get a sense of the atmosphere etc.

Posted by: alex at July 13, 2006 6:02 PM

Barbaro..whatever happens, know that you will never be forgotten. I'm so sad now, but at least I know you are in the best possible hands. We're praying for you.

Please see some laminitis success stories here. I already sought to post some info re alternatives once laminitis sets in, but my comment was/is in limbo and I think once it does post it will be cached and not very accessible - so, please forgive me but I will post it again as soon as I have sent this one. No one is giving up yet. The case studies at this site demonstrate that success is possible. CJ in Hammond, IN

Posted by: C. Jafffe at July 13, 2006 6:02 PM

Just read some interesting information on laminitis and the removal of the hoof that was mentioned in the press conference. One comment that stood out above all others - that the recovery, in large part, depended on the horse's disposition and willingness to tolerate the discomfort. The other thing mentioned was the ability for the owners to pay for the expensive and long treatment protocol. Bobby's got both of these important things going for him. If anyone has the right attitude, it's Bobby. It's a bad situation, but not completely hopeless. So while I'm realistic, I'm still hopeful. Stay strong!

Posted by: Sheila at July 13, 2006 6:02 PM

Don't know what to say right now. Of course I'm not giving up, but I am angry with the world even though I know it's no one's fault.

Posted by: Elizabeth Thompson at July 13, 2006 6:04 PM

I thought I heard that 80% of the hoof was removed. Will have to watch it again.

Posted by: Lynda at July 13, 2006 6:05 PM

Bless you Alex. Sue from Oxford again and I can't tell you how grateful I am to be following the news on your site. I've been checking in all day (it's after 6pm here).
So our boy is really up against it now. All we can do is send those positive vibes and hope it's enough to get him through it. Bloody lamnitis, on top of everything else. Keep the faith everybody.

Posted by: Sue McMullen at July 13, 2006 6:06 PM

I thought the Jackson's, Michael Matz & Dr Richardson handled this latest situation very well..They are going the extra mile & as long as Bobby shows signs of some improvement with no more major setbacks & is comfortable, being the intelligent champion that he is, he will pull through. My Bichon Frise,(Tommy)& I pray for his comfort..
Thank you so much for this web site & all the links.....

Posted by: Charles A. Weis at July 13, 2006 6:09 PM

Ok, ESPN is quoting Dr. Richardson as saying "20%" has been removed.

We removed a large portion of his ([eft] foot wall, probably 20 percent of it," Richardson said. "He's in a foot cast with foam padding and antiseptic dressing. We'll see if can regrow his hoof. It will take months and months."

Thanks, Alex.

I felt like I'd been kicked in the gut when I saw the report. But I also feel surreally calm right now. I guess the worst that could possibly have happened has, and now we know what he's up against. Miracles have happened before. Who's to say Barbaro can't pull one off now?

I wish the best for Roy and Gretchen Jackson, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, Dr. Richardson and his staff at NBC -- everyone who loves Barbaro and has tried so hard to save him. They've got to be devastated right now and I'm thinking of them a lot.

But mostly I'm thinking of Barbaro and praying that he'll find the strength to fight this off. C'mon, Bobby, if any horse can do this, you can. The odds were against you at the Derby, too.

Posted by: Amy L. at July 13, 2006 6:09 PM

We won't give up on you Bobby.

Thanks to Alex and this site for being the "meeting place" for all of us who care so much. This is where the best information has always been, usually before anywhere else.

Loretta--Your posts (now with the previous batch of posts, so maybe you should re-post them here) are great and exactly what we all need to read and re-read any time any of us feels the 'f' word ('fear'--not that other one).

It always helps to hear stories of those who have recovered from against all odds. My grandmother did this too--at a point when all the 'experts' had given up, she didn't. Instead she rallied and lived another 16 years. (I couldn't agree with you more about that morbid account posted about Secretariat's last day--so totally inappropriate for what we are about here.)

And here's another thing...Bobby is cool and calm and munching away in his stall, totally unconcerned with all of the hub-bub around him (unless it means someone is bringing him treats). We need to follow his lead--cool and calm and just knowing that this is being taken care of. It is significant that so many of us have felt the calm descend sometime in the past 12 hours or so. A new mantra--COOL AND CALM.

I'm so with you, Loretta--think of how we will rejoice when the current situation is reversed. Can't you just see it? I can for sure. Maybe we should start planning that big party!

So glad so many are catching the spirit!

Alex, Thanks again for the quick updates. You along with everyone involved have the stamina of a 1,000 people (horses!) for all the things you do plus the normal day to day.

Barbaro, your in the biggest race of your life right now and you can hang in there. You have the perservance, stamina, athletic ability, good sense, constitution, and on and on.

I'm actual quiet after hearing the news (for if tears were allowed I won't get out of my chair) sorry, I'm just going on..

May God's peace and healing powers embrace your entire body.

Your not giving up and neither are we!! You keep nickering for your food...

Alex,

Thank you for all that you are doing to keep us informed. I still have great hope, Bobby is figher and if anybody can make it, it will be him. The comments made by those above who have done research gives me reason to believe that he can come thru this. Thank God for Dr Richardson and Staff and Mr and Mrs Jackson.

Just wanted to THANK YOU for the great job in keeping the news going all through Barbaro's stay at New Bolton. The news today is just such a shock to me to hear that laminitis has so quickly appeared. We will all continue our prayers for this great horse.

Posted by: Richie at July 13, 2006 6:18 PM

Barbara:

They removed 80% of the hoof. Bobby is in a cast obviously to protect the rest of the foot.

And something that Loretta said on the page before about seeing yourself as healed (or in this case Bobby)--Dr R said that the only reason they are moving ahead with all of this (it's really unusual to go this far with this serious a case)is Bobby himself. Bobby is maintaining his weight, he's bright. He's handling the sling--he's not slumping down in it. This horse wants to live.

I will have the big interview with Dr R and Jeannine Edwards up later in mp3 format (audio)at bobbysbabybrother@comcast.net. I hope that okay to post the website.

Man, I was just wondering last week on how Barbaro was doing and then this news is leaked. I pray for a recovery, while the odds are against him, as long as there's a chance he can recover and with Dr. Richardson there is hope. Go get 'em Barbaro!

thanks, alex...will review later, have to try to get some work done today. it's been very hard to focus, my thoughts are all with barbaro.

Posted by: Barbara Kerr at July 13, 2006 6:21 PM

Miracles do happen. My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, when she was 4 months old, inhaled a piece of kibble which lodged in her trachea. I rushed her 80 miles from a local vet to Michigan State U's vet hospital, her only chance. For 3 days, I was told that her chances were slim due to the resulting pneumonia. The X-rays looked terrible. She was bad. A week later I took her home, and she's 7 years old now, with good lungs. She's my miracle, and maybe Barbaro can be a miracle horse for all of us. I used to run a county humane society, and I've seen amazing turnarounds. I think it helps that animals may not be aware of how dire their condition might be, and they maintain that crucial good attitude. Whatever happens, we need to be behind Dr Richardson, staff, and the Jacksons 100%. Love you Barbaro.

Thank you for the information Alex.

All good thoughts to Bobby and his connections.

When there is life... there is hope.

Hang in there (((Bobby)))

Posted by: Pat G San Jose, Ca at July 13, 2006 6:21 PM

Jane, well said!!

I remember when I had to hold my beloved cat of 14 years while she was euthanized. . We had tried everything for months and one day the vet said "She's not getting better, she’s just staying alive for you.” When I heard that, I had to do what was right for her.

Everyone knows that everything possible is being done for Barbaro. Sometimes it’s just not enough. We've all lost loved ones and then we go on. We don’t forget but we go on. If the worst should happen, the Jackson’s, Dr. Richardson and everyone involved with him will mourn but they will go on. And they will go on with the knowledge that they have the admiration and respect of those who care so much about Barbaro. While we all pray that he makes it, we have to be prepared and let those close to him know that we support them.

I find it truly amazing that he has survived long enough to let the world learn about New Bolton Center and the wonderful work they do. He's enabled them to raise funds that will help so many horses in the future. The way to honor this magnificent horse it to make sure the Barbaro Fund goes on. He has brought out the best in people who have now started a campaign to help other horses. Many of us are getting involved in starting new charities and contributing to existing ones. It’s almost as though he has a mission and just like everything else he's ever done, he’s done this like a champion. With every horse that is helped because of Barbaro, his legacy will live on. He started it but now it is up to all of us to make sure it continues no matter the outcome.

Posted by: Shelley at July 13, 2006 6:23 PM

Years back there was a very famous & well Breed
Trotter called "Mystic Park" who had Laminitis.
The horse was keep in a sling with movement for close to 1 year or more.

Why did they allow Barbaros to stand on his own when they knew what the consequences could be. Now today when he is suffering and most likely on Morphhine I expect the next we will hear is they put him down because he was in severe pain.

Oddly enough this scenerio brings back memories of a friends horse who was treated for laminitis at New Bolton had a chunk of her hoof cut out and the farrier made a special boot for her. Needless to say in my opinion when horses go to New Bolton they are used for experimental procedures. Lady had to be put down also.

Posted by: Lee Reynolda at July 13, 2006 6:24 PM

Loretta,

Thanks for your inspiring posts on the previous page. I'm hoping, too, that we avoid eulogizing Barbaro while he is still very much alive.

I understand that laminitis is a serious problem, but Barbaro doesn't know a thing about odds. Let's remember that he's eating, comfortable and "ears up," according to Dr. R. this morning.

As long as the champ is comfortable and his attitude is bright, his healing will continue apace. The road ahead is long, yes, but who better to walk it?

Sweet Barbaro, I'm sending you much love and healing light.

Thank you so much, Alex, for your great work and consideration.

Lee, respectfully I must disagree with you. I don't think for a minute that anyone has been experimenting with Barbaro. We are not the experts - it's easy to second guess after the events have played out. I have faith in his team that they've done everything with only one objective - to give him recovery.

Posted by: Sheila at July 13, 2006 6:28 PM

I hope this isn't out of place here! While I have all the faith in the world in New Bolton and everyone there - I wanted to bring up something that might be able to help Barbaro further. PLEASE CONTACT ME if anyone can get this info to them - and I will give you the name and specific information that I would like to have passed on to them!!!

This is a HUGE plea to ANYONE who may know someone at New Bolton - or a way to get in direct contact with them.

I have already left two messages at the center for Gail Luciani and Pam Salsbury. Other than those two, I am not sure who to contact.

I have info that may or may not be beneficial to Barbaro and this point - but it is something that I feel Dr. Richardson and the others caring for him should at least be aware of. I know of a vet who literally performed miracles with a horse I used to know ... who suffered from chronic laminitis for over a year! She is alive and well today thanks to this vet. Obviously I have know way of knowing how similar her case was to Barbaro since we know very little as far as details go - but it is still something I feel those caring for him have a right to explore (if they already haven't done so)!

So if anyone has a way to directly contact someone at New Bolton that may be able to get this info to the doctors there - PLEASE e-mail me at ruffian122@aol.com so I can pass that info along.

It has to do with a hyperbaric chamber. The vet I am speaking of truly performed a miracle in saving this horse I knew last year, aptly she was named "Angel." ::angel:: I'm crossposting this everywhere I can think of - please do the same if you don't mind. Thanks!

While Barbaro story has taken a tragic turn, I have seen horses overcome more than this. There is still some hope!!!!! Keep praying!!

P.S. I have been coming here daily for my updates - THANK YOU for keeping them up so well. It is much appreciated by everyone!!

Alex, once again, great job for us under very tough situation. Many thanks.

Barbara, yes, Dr. R said there is 20% of his hoof wall still attached.

This is heartbreaking.. really heartbreaking, terrible news that we heard.

Listened to the conference and watched it. Many impressions... will try and be succinct. As Alex indicated, Dr. R was honest, emotional, and classy. He told us the seriousness of our boy's situation, while giving us some hope. Emphasized how catastrophic the laminitis is and above all, the Jackson's want Barbaro to be comfortable and to be able to act like a "normal" horse and do not want Barbaro to be in pain. Yes, there will be some pain but if they get to the point where the pain can't be managed and Barbaro can't act like a "normal" horse, they can't continue.

**This was so difficult for him to say, heartbreaking to hear** but we all love our Bobby so much, respect him for maintaining his wonderful attitude, distinct personality and humor and I know we don't want him be in pain as that's not the life any of us have envisioned for him. I have to respect what I heard Dr. R telling us, even though it's not what I wanted to hear.

They haven't given up and are working as hard as they can to get Barbaro through this. We haven't given up either. I(along with all of you) will continue sending Barbaro positive, loving thoughts, will pray the pain meds continue to work, giving him the time he needs to heal. His wonderful fighting spirit has amazed us and amazed the doctors. He is eating well, has excellent GI function, maintaining his weight and has no temperature. This is great news, isn't it? Dr. R wanted us to know this!

Let's stick together, guys and stick with the Jackson's, Michael, Peter, Alex and our best buddy, champ and hero, Barbaro.

Love you so much, Barbaro!!

Alex--Thanks so much for your reports. It meant so much for us to have you there--the one person we can count on to give us the true scoop without distortions.

I think it is interesting--and I haven't yet checked the ESPN site for the transcript--about all of the conflicitng reports right here on our board about the percentage of Bobby's left hind hoof that was removed. (Was it 20% or was it 80%?) All of the differing reports just right here on which it one it was illustrate an important point: we all can hear the same news and walk away with differnt impressions--even when it is cut and dried like this would be considered to be.

When the issue is not cut and dried things get even more disparate--like was the press confewrence today an upper or a downer. It depends on how you look at it.

Although the news was certainly not all good, many of us saw it as essentially good (Lisa Morin has a great post in the previous batch about all the significant positives that were reported). Others ended up in tears.

To those in tears, I say, go read Lisa's post, the ones from Loretta (also in the previous batch unless she has re-posted them here--which I think both she and Lisa should do), and all of the others where the positives are pointed out and the ones reporting the calm they now feel. Stop the crying, banish the dark thoughts--get on the wagon of COOL AND CALM.

Some of us believe that Bobby's destiny has already been determined. Remember Peter Brette's Irish friend who, even before the Derby, looked into Bobby's eyes and saw an old soul? Bobby knows where he is going and has always known. Old souls already know. Take your cues from Bobby--he is COOL AND CALM, which is how more and more of us are becoming. THIS is progress.

Genine - Did you listen to the press conference? Poor Dr. said "let me digress...and tell people to stop calling us with try this, or try that. We've consulted all the experts". I read on another list someone just called the NBC and was surprised not to get a return phone call.

Hello people! Let them do their jobs.

Posted by: Ryan at July 13, 2006 6:38 PM

Thank you Nancy. I'm glad you agree. I will post it here again. How many times do you think I should re-post? It will only help people if they can find it. I wonder how many readers go back to the previous cached posts.

I recently found this site, thanks to a poster on the NBC bd. I cannot imagine going thru this difficult stage w/o this bd & its frequent updates. Thank you to all who made this possible.

Like all of you, I feel strongly that we must be very diligent & vigilent in holding nothing but the most positive & harmonious healing thoughts for Barbaro.

To that end, I would like to share w/you some amazing healings which I hope will inspire all to continue to pray fervently for Barbaro & not to lose hope or succumb to fear & worry, despite the less than favorable news reports. I'm sure many of you have experienced healings too, but the reason I want to share them here, is to help us all stay calm, focused, & inspired, so that we will not perpetuate the fear & worry thoughts already circulating around Barbaro & his people.

Our COLLECTIVE prayerful thought WILL make a difference. Especially now when a scheduled press conference is bringing renewed attention to Barbaro's condition, to the public at large, many of whom may not feel about Barbaro as we do. I'm referring, for ex., to the negative thought out there which has already reared its ugly head with the rumor that Barbaro was going to be put down.

Therefore, it is critical now, at this serious stage that Barbaro is facing, that we counter this negative thought with healing prayers & thoughts for Barbaro. But I have learned that complete, even "miraculous" healing -- which is what we need to see for Barbaro right now -- results not just from sending positive thoughts. Rather, it must include a cessation of fear thoughts. Fear & worry on our part, block the efficacy of the healing thoughts/energy that we're directing to Barbaro. Even the Bible talks about this: "The thing I have feared has come upon me."

I, too, find myself afraid & worried about the unexpected turn of events for our Barbaro. But I know from experience in doing prayerful, healing work for myself & others, that we must keep fear at bay. To hold fearful thoughts means that we are doubting, or do not have faith, in God's great power to heal Barbaro. Praying for healing, while at the same time fearing the outcome, is like pulling our thought in opposite directions. We must KNOW, we must AFFIRM, without doubting, that God has ALREADY heard our prayers & has RESTORED Barbaro, even if the restoration is not yet evident to our human sense. Jesus THANKED God FIRST...for the healing...before the healing was manifest. Jesus KNEW w/o doubting that the healing was, in fact, already done.

Let me illustrate this from my personal experience w/two bone restorations in my own body. In 2001, I was running very fast on a car lot & my foot hit an embankment that I didn't see. It was like hitting a "brick wall". I was 54 yrs. old. My body hit the ground w/such force, I thought it would knock me out. I was alone, but managed to pull myself up & hobble to my car, crying in pain. My left wrist was killing me. It was night when this happened & I went home & soaked in a WARM bath...not the correct thing to do, as I learned later. I wrapped my wrist in an old ace bandage & the next day I bought a brace from the drugstore. I didn't think it was serious. I also began to pray for myself. I held in my thought that I was a perfect child of God (which is Barbaro's status too), & that God had already healed me. I also went to a 3-day spiritual conference, during which the minister prayed for people in the audience. I kept this brace on for months b/c the pain was quite severe at times. I did go to a "walk-in" clinic, but the doc didn't even x-ray it, thinking that it was not serious. After about 6 mos. the wrist felt pretty good, & only occasionally did I feel a tinge of pain. I decided to have it checked out by an orthopedic surgeon just to make sure everything was okay. When the doc came into the room & put up my x-ray, he turned to me & said: "Well, you BROKE your wrist!" I almost fell off the chair. "I broke my wrist?" "Yes", he said, "but it's perfectly healed!" In fact, he told me it would not have healed any better had I come to him at the outset,& had a cast applied. He said not to wear the brace anymore, b/c my wrist had to build strength. A registered nurse pointed out to me that I was very "lucky" b/c there are so many little bones in the wrist that often people have to have pins inserted to heal a broken wrist! I was grateful for this healing. And I certainly think that prayer...more than just me putting on a drugstore brace...had everything to do with this healing.

Perhaps more dramatically than that, was the healing of a complete restoration of deteriorated bone below one my molars. This occurred 20 yrs. ago, when I delayed in getting a root canal. By the time I went to the dentist, he said that the bone supporting the tooth was almost completely gone. He did the root canal, but asked me to return in 4 wks. This was at a time in my life when I was just getting interested in healing through prayer. So I remember when I left his office, I thought to myself that even though the x-ray shows that the bone is gone...it can be restored through prayerful healing. There was nothing the dentist could do anyway. Then I realized, as a child of God, my being is truly spiritual, & nothing is "lost" in God's spiritual universe, so nothing needs to be "restored"; I just needed to understand this spiritual fact. You might be reading this & saying to yourselves that this is just a play on words...that none of this makes sense. But it does, b/c I'm talking here about correct thinking -- that which is devoid of fear & doubt -- that recognizes & affirms God's healing power & the perfection of His universe that we're all a part of...including our dear Barbaro.

Once I realized,in that moment, that my bone was never really "gone" to begin with, as far as God is concerned, despite what the x-rays showed, it gave me a sense of being healed, & I didn't worry about it anymore. When I returned to the dentist 4 wks later, I had no idea what the x-ray would show or not show. But when the dentist came in w/the x-ray, he was visibly stunned. He asked me to get up from the chair so he could show me something. What he showed me was that the bone was COMPLETELY RESTORED! He said he could not even see a line of demarcation where the new bone grew back. He showed me both x-rays -- before & after -- so I saw w/my own eyes. I asked him if this was unusual. He said "yes"; that bone can & does grow back in these instances, but when it does, it doesn't grow back that fast or always that completely; and you can usually see the line where the new growth is. In my case, the bone was gone...then reappeared, as though it had never been gone in the first place! Then he said something to me I'll never forget: "You are remarkably receptive to healing."

This is what we need for Barbaro. We don't even need "time"; we need the collective knowing that God has already healed this magnificent child of his, and we must not fear or doubt that this healing will be made manifest. Our biggest problem is that we're dealing with a lot of negative thought out there that we must handle. We must recognize that even though it exists, it cannot penetrate God's loving protection for Barbaro. But to dismiss these negative thoughts as being inconsequential, would be a mistake; we must counter them with the Truth of what God can do, is doing, & has already done for Barbaro.

Isn't it curious that the ONLY horse in the Preakness who could have won the Triple Crown, was the horse that was injured! How much negativity was directed to Barbaro that day! Another person on this bd wrote recently about a bill to be voted on in Congress that would protect horses, which the Jacksons were supporting, and that very day Barbaro was stricken with these infections! Folks, I'm 59 yrs. old; I might be older or younger than some of you, but I've seen a lot so far, as I'm sure many of you have. I think that person had a point. I don't think it's coincidental that Barbaro started having trouble at the same time this bill was presented.

It is life & death now that we're dealing with. We must not fear or worry; but we must counter these negative thoughts with Truth. Only God's Love & Healing Power are present in Barbaro's body.

Just 2 more examples of healing: My 3-yr. old puppy was suddenly & inexplicably stricken w/a deadly disease. The vet thought it was Parvo, even though he had been vaccinated against that. When the blood test was done, the vet told me that the white blood cell count was so low that he might not make it. There was no question it was immediately life-threatening. I left the vet's office in total SHOCK that I might lose my 3-yr.old puppy. As I drove home I started to cry. Then I caught myself & stopped crying, b/c I knew that I was allowing FEAR to take hold of me, rather than digging in & knowing that God's Love was protecting my puppy. I punched my steering wheel & yelled out, "My puppy is NOT going to die!" When I got home I turned off all TVs & radios so there would be NO distractions, & started praying w/o ceasing. Later that evening the vet called & said the next 24 hrs. would be critical. The blood cell count had to increase. So I continued my vigil. I only stopped praying to eat & sleep. The next evening, Sunday, the vet said there had been a dramatic change & that my puppy's white blood cell count was WAY UP! Which was what the doctor needed to see so that the puppy could fight off the infection. The next morning my little fellow was doing so well that I was able to bring him home. The vet told me that it was extremely unusual for this to happen. In all his years he had never seen it happen. He said two things were on the puppy's side: his youth, & the fact that he was totally healthy at the onset of the problem. Barbaro has that going for him too. By the way, my puppy is now 12 yrs. old!

The remaining example is of my mother, who was admitted for a knee replacement, but contracted pneumonia in the hospital. She wound up in ICU in a life & death struggle. B/c of her advanced age (83) & weak physical condition, the docs didn't expect her to make it. My sister & I were shown x-rays of the pneumonia in her lungs. I knew what I had to do & how I had to approach it. I knew that no matter what the x-rays showed, that my mother was in God's protective care & could not be subject to this thing called "pneumonia". The docs agreed to let us stay w/her in the ICU, which is not usually allowed, but we were adamant. I stayed during the late night into the morning. This allowed me to "fill" the atmosphere surrounding her with healing thoughts. I read prayerful material through the night; I did not sleep. I held the "correct" thoughts throughout the night, every night, which were the affirmations that God had already healed her no matter what the docs thought. In a week or so, the pneumonia began to leave her lungs. The next hurdle was if she could breathe on her own w/o a machine; she could. Finally she was moved to a regular room & it was all downhill from there.

Once again, the docs were surprised. And one of them said to me: "You & your sister kept your mother alive." My sister's prayful approach is different from mine, but I'm sure our COLLECTIVE non-stop prayerful work, in our mother's ICU room, did much to counter the prevailing negative atmosphere.

I would like to see the Jacksons have whoever their spiritual advisor is, i.e., priest, minister...whoever...physically visit Barbaro to bless him in person. I sent that suggestion to Gail Luciani by email -- the PR person at NBC, but I don't know if she'll pass that suggestion on to the Jacksons. Since we can't visit Barbaro in person to pray for him right there in his stall, I certainly see no reason why a minister couldn't visit Barbaro.

In closing, three quotes: 2 from Bible, 1 from the movie "Apollo 13".

"Be still & know that I am God". (Think of that when you feel fear & worry welling up in you re Barbaro. It will calm your thought.)

"The battle is not yours. Set yourselves. Stand ye still and see the salvation of the Lord." (This reminds us that God is in control.)

"Failure is not an option". (From "Apollo 13"; it helps remind me that in God's universe, there is no such thing as failure.)

I believe that the love we have for Barbaro is a reflection of the Perfect Love that God has for Barbaro.

I do hope this long post offers inspiration for some of you. It helps me too, to remember these awsome healings. Thank you for allowing me to share these for all our benefit & for Barbaro & his connections. We must know that Dr. Richardson, the Jacksons, Michael Matz & everyone close to Barbaro is under God's protection too. Thank you.

I just posted a very LONG post, then saw the diagnosis of laminitis. But we cannot allow FEAR into our thought. We must STAND FIRM & KNOW that God is in control & is HEALING BARBARO despite the news. This NOT wishful thinking. This is recognizing God's power over ALL. If you start contemplating the worst, it's as though you're already giving in. Thought devoid of FEAR & DOUBT should PREVAIL. Once you consider the alternative, then you're already admitting that there is an alternative other than PERFECT HEALING for BARBARO. This can be REVERSED. But we cannot throw weight on the WRONG side. Talking about preparing for the worst means you're holding that picture in your thought, and it will be exactly what you will see come to pass. Get that picture out of your mind! DO NOT READ about Secretariat's situation. That post did not help any of us; it injected negative energy into this atmosphere. Please DO NOT CONTEMPLATE THE PICTURE THAT YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE HAPPEN! Instead, think of how you will REJOICE to see this whole thing Reversed!

C. Jaffe, have you posted the "Serenityequine" info about lamnitis on the NBC message board?

At least we know everyone is doing everything they can for Barbaro. Bless everyone involved for trying saving him. Continue to pray!

Thank you again for your prompt and accurate updates, Alex..

Thanks again...

ya know, here's a really good thought -- our bobby is happy, yes, thanks to the docs, he's pain free right now, eating, checking out what's going on around him and getting lots of tlc and attention -- not to mention scratches. who wouldn't love that.

that's living in the moment. we should focus on that.

Barbaro,
I've prayed for you from the start, and will not give up now. I know you can make it! You are our special champion!

Thanks so much for the info about the florist, Chris -- I called right away and ordered a basket for Barbaro and the staff at NBC. You're right, they'll do pretty much anything you want them to, and I told them to use their imaginations to come up with something suitable for both Barbaro and everyone who's taking care of him. They're wonderful folks (they took it totally in stride when I told them my message and said it wasn't funny at all to send a basket to Barbaro)!

CJ, just want to add my thanks for the link. It is very reassuring. At this point, I guess it all depends on Bobby's continued will to fight. All evidence proves that he is fighting.

Bobby's morale, his vital signs, appetite are pointing to a go. The red light is the severe laminitis. Hopefuly the green will outplay the red.

Alex, you summed up Dr R brilliantly. He's "a class act." Thanks for your keeping the extended family updated.

Barbaro, you're a class horse, with a class dr, and a classy family. Your the tops big guy!

You can battle and win this.

Love ya,

God Bless all of you for keeping us so well informed. Right now I'm pretty distraught, but its a story as old as the Book of Job. Why does this happen to such a wonderful creature? Not to be answered in this life, I guess. Bobby, you have brought so many good people together in your name, what a champion!!!!. Bravo Barbaro.

I thought of the same thing Nancy. Someone also quoted it under a beautiful head shot of Barbaro on Barbara Livingston's website.

"The eyes of an old soul" He told Peter that Barbaro was really the soul of Nureyev returned" Barbara L agreed and went on to say that his expression is enchanting, and his actions equally so.

As Edgar Prado said " Barbaro is not a quitter" Bless you dear Barbaro!

I just watched the press conference on www.cbs3.com again.
It's in the video section on the right. He's had a hoof wall resection and only has 20% of the hoof left.
Strangely, I feel calm even knowing the news and how bad it is.
He can still pull through; Dr.R. said the right pastern was coming along and temp and vitals were good. The main thing is his comfort and everyone pray that laminitis doesn't show up in one of his other hooves.

at lunch I watched ESPNNews and Barbaro is the top new story. I also saw Jeanne Edwards report - very informative - she had a horse leg skeleton and showed where the injuries were to the right hind and also showed what was done to his left hoof. I understand alot more now. Jeanne did an excellent report.

Barbaro - my prayers and thoughts are with you 24/7. I will be here everyday while you recover - 5 months - 6 months - 1 year - whatever it takes.

I love you Barbaro - xxoo and scratchies.

Loretta--thanks for re-posting...maybe just once per page (batch) is good...and could you re-post your shorter version too--for those who don't have the time or whatever to read the long one?

I hope Lisa Morin will re-post her list of positives that came out of the press conference. That was also so good.

There is another (among many) good posts on the previous page from Vanessa Sandhu, an ICU RN--it's the past post of that batch, but worth it to go back and read for what it says about what she has seen re: recoveries against all odds in her experience. (She also mentions having just sent harry & David apples to Bobby today--funny, I was just thinking of that this morning too.)

Thanks to Chris Byers for the contact info on Kennett Florist's--the one closest to Bobby and the Jacksons...this is good to keep on hand for the long run so we can keep letting them know we are still there with them, no matter how long this takes. I love the horse treat basket they were making up to send over to our boy this afternoon.

And Barb Kerr, YES! Staying in the moment--Bobby is happy, content, eating--getting scratched and probably massaged and bathed too. Bobby's in the moment--let's get in it with him!

My heart and prayers go out to Barbaro and all his "family". What a sad sad day. This is almost as sad as the day they announced my all time favorite Horse Secretariat as having Laminitis.

I wish I could do more, but all I can do is say a silent prayer and light a candle. and shed a few tears in the process. I hope he has the heart and will power to endure the days ahead, it will not be a easy battle to fight..

Genine, Just a thought: Maybe you could FAX or OVERNIGHT the info that you have directly to Dr. Richardson. If you phone NBC, they might give you a FAX #. If not, then just Overnight the info to the attn of Dr. Richardson. Surely it would be given to one of his staff & they would hand it to him. He would know that anyone willing to pay for an Overnight package must have something important in there. No matter how hectic things must be there now, people usually pay attn to an "Overnight".

Michael Matz was in a plane crash many years ago. All of the "experts" said the pilot couldn't possibly have brought the plane down without hydraulics. He did and most passengers survived.

Miracles can and do happen-

I wanted to post as someone who has had this type of catastrophic laminitis occur. I hope I can answer some of the questions based on my experience. First - they don't put horses into slings to unless they must - it is not used as a preventative because it is a very difficult thing for the horse.

Second- laminitis can come on really fast with no warning. Things can be fine and five minutes later you can be done - that is literally how fast it happened to our filly.

Third - it is extraordinarily painful. If Bobby is having good pain control they will keep trying but I can also say that I have seen the pain meds stop working and that is the time when the horse will tell you - I am done. Please believe me when I say - you can see it in their eyes, the horse tells you they want to stop.

Please, everyone - don't second guess NBC. They have done everything. You can bet the farm that Dr. Richardson has been consulting with everyone possible that could possibly help. I have several equine surgeons who are personal friends and they are the most driven, dedicated people on the planet. Dr. Richardson has a reputation for being the most driven of all.

Now, on a positive note - it is possible. It is a really long road. I have hope. Believe in Barbaro

Many, many thanks.

As an aside--it won't be long before this site really gets flooded with new Friends. I've already seen so many new names in the past few days. Alex, are you ready? :)

Genine: Better yet, why don't you have the vet you know put in a call to Dr. Richardson at NBC. Doctors take calls from other doctors. Maybe this vet can do a conference call w/Dr. R & the rest of his staff. Dr. R. wants to save Barbaro; I don't think there's any "ego" involved here. He would not dismiss valid medical research that could save Barbaro.

Posted by: Loretta at July 13, 2006 7:15 PM

THANKS to ALEX for all his updates!!
What wonderful people surrounding Barbaro!!
I replayed the entire press conference and agree that Dr. Richardson said they are looking into any and all suggestions that might help. They can only do what they think is BEST for our "Bobby"!
As long as Bobby has a will to live and continues to eat and thrive, they will continue their fight to help save his life!
Let's all pray for a miracle!!

Having worked with TBs, yes, I have seen recovery from laminitis.

Let me bring one thing up.
When the breakdown occured, and I knew they were going to operate and cast him, my first thought was, Well, that is going to be a problem, given his feisty nature, having seen horses undo all the work done on them by thrashing, banging, etc.

Our Bobby has done none of this. He has shown the intelligence to know he needs to be calm, cooperative, in short, helping HIMSELF in every way to recover. He wants to live. That, in itself, is a major, major thing, and is going to play a part, as it has been, in his recovery.

Family, take a cue, dry your tears, take that deep sigh, try to ignore that heavy pressure on your heart, and be brave like our Champ!

Go and send a card, send a horse basket, send him a bag of those Brach's awful peppermints he loves!
But, he needs us now to show his grace , and be as courageous as he is by showering him across the miles with our LOVE, HOPE ,PRAYERS, ANYTHING POSITIVE!!!

As I said before, attitude is everything, we know what is wrong now.......we need to pray and hope that he stays as brave as he has been. Our collective positive thoughts and prayers can help.

I love you, Bobby. STAY THE CHAMPION YOU ARE!

Dear Barbaro,

I have a candle lite here in my house for you. I've been with you from the begining and will be until you are all better. I don't say if, but when because I BELIEVE IN YOU, and I know God is listening and will help, don't give up. You knew this was a long hard race, but you are a champion and if anyone can win it it's you. You have given me some much inspiration with your illness. I'm a life long diabetic and suffer from complications from it. I watched you and you give me the will to face the pain and go on each day. Now, it's my turn to give it back to you. Draw on that now and feel me sending you all my strength and encouragement to never give up. This is just a set back, one we didn't want, but none the less just a set back. If love alone could make you better, you would be a million times healed by now. I LOVE YOU BOBBY, and will never give up on you. You have come too far to quit and I'm no quiter and your no quiter, so there! All of this has me crying a river, and my bloodsugars are through the roof, but it's all worth it just to hear you are improving, so hurry up and beat this big guy! I'll be back to check again later. Hugs and kisses to you sweetheart.........

Thank you Dear Sweet Barbaro. for You, your Spirit, Personality, Courage, Bravery, Magnificence, and your Love. You are a light that shines so brite! You have touched my heart so deeply. You are so LOVED gentle one!

Alex,

There really are no words to express how important you have become in our lives. We can learn from your patience and Barbaro's patience.

I just want to say, that it broke my heart to see Dr. R as he said time and time again that "people will question the treatment the horse is receiving"... and then when he hurriedly left the room and it looked as though our tough, brilliant, confident Dr. R broke down.. I broke down.

How can anyone who watched that press conference question any treatment prescribed by Dr. R.? He's the best of the best. He's written so many of the textbooks.

I'm going to keep on praying for all our friends at NBC, Fair Hill, The Jacksons and Bobby...I'm also going to "Remember Nureyev" and go light another candle for Bobby and one for Dr. R.

Just found this in the cached messages (I went back to the last batch to retrieve a link) -- a reply to my post about what other fruits besides apples, horses like to eat - which I had posted because someone else asked the question. Anita posted this:

CJ the crazy cat lady - I just loved your post telling us what horses like to eat. Just eat that stuff up!!! Thanks

Posted by: Anita at July 13, 2006 01:26 PM [actually 6 hrs earlier, Indiana time]

Anita, your reaction prompts me to continue my self-appointed task/role/mission as Court Jester and Gadfly on the Wall amongst this worthy crowd.

Anita's reply amused me so; she got me to smile through the tears that have been practically non-stop since Daphne called me this morning with the news of the 9-letter L word.

(Ole Blue Eyes [Blue], my Siamese, was my pillow when the dam broke; he saw me sobbing as I tried to get my first cuppa coffee at the sink; jumped onto the counter and pushed his face against mine while I wept.)

Anita's words took me back over 20 years. I still remember that "good review" from a perfect stranger, whose words enriched and reaffirmed my life. My second night as a week-end entertainer; a "pro" (for pay, as a billed musical comedy act) at a joint owned by the old Earl of Old Town [Chicago] - a woman I didn't know, bought me a drink between sets. She said, "I was feeling terrible last night, but I made myself go out, came in here, and saw you. You made me laugh, and made me feel so good - I came back tonight and brought a friend." If I wasn't before, I was hooked.

ANYWAY - now that I know that some get a kick ("just eat that stuff up" - VERY funny, Anita, in the context of the subject matter) out of hearing some of the stories from my life - which in my case, is the story of the horses in it, haha - I'll be there, telling the very funny truth at every operatunity!

And I will keep posting links to informative things that IMO are reasons for hope. Pls read the links in my last email/post re laminitis treatment alternatives.

Keep the faith - our Barbaro can still make it. Really. Not just a pep talk. Litany once more - he's in good spirits, in the best of all possible hands, and we know that all that can be done, will be done. Peace, Love, Hope. What is hard for me it that everything was going so good for so long. Everytime I checked this site he was "excellent". That's why for this to happen at this time seems like such a blow. We must continue to focus on the fact that Barbaro is happy, bright, alert, and eating. He is showing signs he wants to fight. Please know Barbaro that whatever path life has for you, we will never forget what you've done for us.

I DIDN'T HEAR DR. R MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT 20% SURVIVAL, HE SAID THAT BOBBY'S CONDITION IS "POOR" AND USED OTHER WORDS THAT WEREN'T VERY POSITIVE. I AGREE, DR. R. IS A CLASS ACT, HE DID A GREAT JOB WITH THE INTERVIEW, HE EVEN LOOKED TO BE A BIT CHOKED UP AS HE WALKED AWAY. HE SAID THEY WILL DO EVERYTHING THEY CAN AS LONG AS BOBBY IS COMFORTABLE. I WATCHED IT ON ESPN, THEN JEANNINE DID HER SHORT INTERVIEW, SHE LOOKED GREAT AND EXPLAINED MORE ABOUT LAMINITIS.

I'M NOT OVERLY SURPRISED, JUST VERY SAD HOW QUICKLY BOBBY'S CONDITION CHANGED. HE'S ONLY 3 YEARS OLD, THAT'S WHAT REALLY BREAKS MY HEART, BOBBY IS SUCH A GORGEOUS BOY.

I'M PRAYING FOR THE JACKSONS AND EVERYONE INVOLVED, PLEASE LORD LOOK AFTER ALL OF THEM AND ESPECIALLY BARBARO. PLEASE HEAL BOBBY, GIVE HIM STRENGH.

Lynn, Thank you so much for your informative post. I was hoping someone like you w/experience in this would jump in here. You're so right...there should be no second-guessing. That is counterproductive b/c it keeps us mired in the never-ending speculation of "what-ifs", instead of focusing on sending healing thoughts to Bobby & his team.

Thanks for the information Chris about the florist. I just talked to Rachel and ordered a basket for our Bobby too. She said they would probably deliver it tomorrow, since they have been out there three times already today. I'm going to let more people I know now about this and hopefully all the good thoughts and prayers will work a miracle, cause I believe.

Thank you Barbaro and team for renewing my passion for horses. Although I'm a horse owner, Barbaro's story has rekindled my urge to learn more about the wonderful and sometimes tragic world of thoroughbred racing. Barbaro's story will go down in infamy like the rest of this sport's great heroes. Included there will be Dr. Dean Richardson.

My precious Bobby. I love you so much, you have done so much for my family. I want you to keep on fighting, but if you can't fight any longer, that's o.k. too. You have won the race, you will always be my champion and my hero. You are a brave and courageous champion. You have blessed so many people. I pray a miracle still is out there for you, but if you must go, go in peace and know you take a part of a lot of hearts with you. God bless Dr. Richardson, Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, and team Barbaro.

Lynette, thanks for the address. CJ--you are always a beacon of light.

We've talked a lot about the great, inspiring Nureyev. 10% chance of survival, 20 years ago--but he made it!

I am also thinking about Lance Armstrong right now! Bobby's biography will be on the shelf next to Lance's. Not only did Lance beat cancer, he became a father and won the Tour de France 7 or 8 times afterwards and is still going strong today! Our Bobby has the same attributes: youth, health, heart, class, brains, and WILL.

In Dr. Richardson's own words:

"This horse, you look at him in the stall - his ears are up, he's bright. He's looking around," Richardson said.

"He's spending some time in the sling. Other times, he's out of the sling. We are not torturing this horse."

Wanted to post this quote from Dr. R, spoken after the laminitis diagnosis, from the Sacramento Bee article by Richard Rosenblatt, AP racing writer. Well, I guess it's down to waiting and praying. Hopefully, they're on top of the infections. If the infections were to go on much longer...I don't know. We have to hope now for the pastern and fetlock joints to fuse and become strong, and we have to wait a very very very long time to see the outcome regarding laminitis. I know these doctors are up to the task. It seems to me, though, that if we get any more bad news in the next few days, they would have to reconsider. So these next few days are critical.

That said, Bobby is tough, Bobby is a winner, and the people around him - especially Dr. Richardson - are sterling. They are class all the way. He's still in with a chance. The main thing is to pray that that there IS NO MORE INFECTION, and laminitis doesn't get any worse. Those two things have to happen, in order for us even to get to the six, seven, eight-month wait to see if he can grow new bone to connect to the hoof wall.

Someone correct me if I am wrong...but as I understand Laminitis, (I do have horses and know what it is......) but Laminitis is fatal only because the pain that is inflicted upon the animal during the recovery can be absolutely horrific. I can only think that,.... if any place can "manage" Bobby's pain through something like this, then the wonderful people at NBC and Dr R can and will. I am so impressed with the level of ability and most of all ...concern for Barbaro on a personal level that Dr Richardson continues to display. I am sure the people around Bobby on a continuous basis that work at NBC are even more caring for the horse. I see this horse making it. All and I mean... All the necessary ingedients are there for Bobby to walk out of that joint.

Dear Barbaro,

I'm staying COOL AND CALM for you!

I too have 'miracle' stories. My feline, Daisy-Rose, had a catastrophic breakdown after her 'sister' passed. Two days of not eating, I rushed her to the vet. He rushed her to the ICU where she stayed for 8 weeks. She was crashing. No one knew why. Her bilirubins were 36 (normal is .1). She had numerous blood transfusions, set backs, new complications, etc. Each day I was asked about her blood work. Either no change, or change for the worse. FINALLY, the day came when the vet reported that her bilirubins were at 32... I WAS ELATED! Though they were still pessimistic, I said, "At least they're going DOWN!" Long story short, Daisy-Rose endured 3 more months of ICU, vet care and then she finally came home. Final diagnosis - diabetes. She lived a happy full life for 5 more years.

I myself am a medical miracle -- after several years of doctors not being able to diagnose a bacterial infection in my gastro system, I was pretty much nearing the end. Then the last doctor/surgeon I saw (after a series of 7!) finally went out on a limb and operated several times and cured me! I've been living a full, pain free life since 2001!

MIRACLES DO HAPPEND! They just need the time and commitment to present themselves.

As hard as it may be, stay COOL AND CALM for Bobby! He needs our clear thought and positive energy now! Don't muddle the vibe with depression and angst.

Thank you Dr. Richardson, M/M Jackson and all the wonderful caregivers Bobby has! You are our hands, you are our voice, you have the honor of being in the presence of the magnificent Barbaro!

The end of the article quotes Dr. Richardson:
"It's very difficult for the Jacksons. It's hard for us. It's hard for them. The Jacksons are going to be second-guessed, if we quit now, if we quit then, if we quit too early, quit too late. It is subjective. There are a lot of people involved in making this decision. Every person involved cares about the well-being of the horse."

I certainly hope they don't quit "too early." I am so heartbroken over this. Like most of you, I thought he was going to recover from his fractures and thrive. I just wasn't emotionally prepared for this. It just rips my heart to pieces.

Hello friends. This am, I drove 1-1/2 hours up I-85 to meet my Mom and niece for lunch, to see them before my trip to Asia. I missed the press conference so I had no idea what was going on, but while sitting at restaurant, I saw the news script across the bottom of the screen. I was absolutely shocked. The "L" word. I must be stupid, because it NEVER occurred to me Barbaro had this condition. I knew they were watching for it though.

I don't remember telling my Mom and niece bye, and the whole drive home I was sobbing and mentally cursing the capricious cruelty of fate. It was bad enough that fate ended Bobby's career, but this just TOTALLY SUCKS.

I just got home and immediately took a dose of my flying anxiety medication in hopes that I can catch up on the details in a reasonable state of mind. Bless Barbaro, at least he is comfortable and alert and still has a chance-albeit a poor one-and I KNOW that the Jacksons will NOT let him suffer. Bless all of Barbaro's connections and the Doc and staff who, I'm sure, have fallen in love with him.

Should I try to watch a rerun of press conference, or is it too much to bear? It's bad enough reading the stuff...not sure I can to watch the Doc.

Thanks, Chris. I just called Kennett Florist and also sent Bobby a basket of "horse goodies". I think he is getting lots of baskets. The young girl that helped me said that they are preparing many of them for delivery. I'm also having a floral arrangement delvered to Dr. R and the NBC folks. I truely believe that their hearts and spirits are in the right place and that they are being guided by the Creator. They need to know we support them too.

Sarah-No, watch the news conference. It is so worth it just to hear/see Dr. R. and also his determination he has, keeping Bobby comfortable, and also he does smile sometimes and tells what a good patient Bobby is, eating well, nickering, etc. After I watched it from someone who posted it on here, I also felt a sense of calm from feeling like you and the tears and the concentration level that has been miminal over the last 4 days.

Loretta!

Thank you for reposting your thoughts/experiences about prayer and healing! Wow!! I was so grateful to read such an in depth and well written accounts of healing. I tried to post something earlier this week about an experience I had some 35 years ago. But I was not able to share my healing story in such an inspiring way.

That said, I want to share with you all this; that on Tuesday afternoon, my heart was so heavy and sad about Barbaro; almost to the point that I was physically impacted. It was a sadness that I just couldn't explain. Today, I believe it had to do with his laminitis. Then late yesterday, I had a picture in my minds eye about Barbaro. He was bathed in a warm golden light but he was very small (in spirit I think) in a big stall. Today, the picture I see shows his head; he appears larger and still bathed in warm golden light. I believe as a group as we come together and collectively partner in prayers for his healing his condition will be turned around. That Barbaro will be healed for both the laminitis and his broken leg.

In your comments you talked about his injury not being a coincidence. Also the quick onset of his laminitis not being a coincidence with the timing of a bill the Jackson's were supporting. It reminds me of a scripture that says, "We do fight against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers and rulers in high places." As a collective group each and every one of us has a part to play in Barbaro's healing. Every person who logs onto this web site is here because they love Barbaro. Love will motivate each of us to his or hers part. Like many others I today I am very calm; it's a bit like being in the eye of the storm. I see the battle lines have been drawn; we now know what we are up against. So I say lets collective go for "IT". I see God has healed and freed our dear Barbaro! I thank God for His mercy and seeing our tears and hearing our prayers.

Hey Barb--what happened? Last we heard from you (your post just before your most recent one) you were saying, and rightfully so, that Bobby was fine and content and enjoying the moment and that that was the key for us too--to be in the moment. So what's this sad talk from you about his being aware? He's only aware that he's enjoying the moment...and that he's in good hands and that he's getting more apples and carrots and peppermints than he ever knew existed? What's happened to you? :-)

Hi Sarah - I could only watch bits and pieces of the press conference - I am at work! From what I watched - I felt hopeful but also sad because Barbaro has to deal with laminitis now and of course, it's not a good thing. You can tell Dr Richardson truly cares for this horse and they are all doing their best to save him. The end was hard to watch, the Dr had to leave abruptly - it was obvious he is very upset, just like the rest of us. I believe they are doing all they can for Barbaro and I believe Barbaro could not be receiving better care. He's in the best hands possible. The press conference made me very emotional. The information in these posts are accurate referencing the press conference. I think if you watch, it could help answer questions you may have but be aware - it's not easy to watch.

God bless

Linda

Dr. Richardson mentioned that will be second guessing over the coming days. They will second guess the Jacksons, they second guess Dr. Richardson, etc.

Alex, if you can please let the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson, Michael, Peter, and all those involved not to second guess themselves. They have followed their heart and their gut. That is all that anyone can do. It is obvious that they care and that they have given Barbaro the chance that he wanted. Now it is up to him and some divine intervention.

Thanks again for your dilegence in keeping us informed.

I have tried to keep it together more at work but it is virtually impossible as it has been for some of you.

Barbaro, I know you've heard this before: Keep fighting like the champion you are. We've been very proud of you so far. I'm sitting here at work, typing this in tears, hoping nobody will see.

This has been such a catastrophic week for this great horse. He doesn't deserve this...he deserves to be out in the field, kicking his heels up, running around and feeling the wind rustling through his mane, his tail flowing in the breeze behind him. I can't believe that those days may be numbered as we speak.

We'll continue our prayers and hope for the best. He deserves it. It's been a rough ride. We're leaving a stall door open for you here in Kentucky. We want you back to enjoy life the way you were supposed to enjoy it.

DEBBIE-- I CRIED SOME TOO SO DON'T FEEL BADLY, LIKE YOU SAID, WE ALL HANDLE OUR EMOTIONS IN DIFFERENT WAYS. I AM PRETTY CERTAIN THAT EVEN DR RICHARDSON WAS GETTING CHOKED UP (TEARY EYED) WHEN HE GOT UP AND WALKED OUT OF THE PRESS CONFERENCE, SAYING BARBARO WAS A WONDERFUL HORSE.

LORETTA, YOUR STORIES ARE VERY INSPIRING, I PASTED THEM TO MY OWN EMAIL SO I CAN READ THEM WHEN I GET DOWN. I DID ACTUALLY SPEND A FEW HOURS SUNDAY CRYING, SO I KIND OF PREPARED MYSELF FOR TODAY. YOUR DOG STORY DEFINITELY MADE ME FEEL BETTER. MY DOG WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HEART DISEASE AT AGE 4, NOW AT AGE 5 (ALMOST 6) HIS CONDITION HAS GOTTEN MUCH WORSE. I'VE BEEN VERY UPSET ABOUT HIM THE PAST MONTH, SO WHEN BARBARO'S CONDITION GOT WORSE, I JUST COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. THANKS FOR THE INSPIRING STORIES. I WISH I COULD BRING BARBARO HOME WITH ME AND MAKE HIM FEEL ALL BETTER!!! :>)

I have heard that some would like to have a moment of silence for Barbaro on Saturday, July 15 at 12 noon. Do you know if there is any email notification going out to the fans or an announcement on any websites?

Posted by: Marianne Buckley at July 13, 2006 8:49 PM

In my eyes Barbaro is still a baby, he is extremely fit and athletic, he has a great attitude, Dr R. said they even took 3 hours to train him with his sling, which he said " Barbaro likes" and at any point that Barbaro feels tired he can simply put his butt back and rest.

Dr. R. also said that he is not really using it on his own. Dr.R. and the staff will put him in the sling for a few hours and then let him out... so the fact that Barbaro is not using it constantly I take as a good thing, Barbaro is healthy, he is standing and moving around all he wants...and he has a normal temp and his plumbing is all working good. Despite the setback he still sounds pretty good to me.

If Barbaro was in alot of pain or didnt want to bother anymore, he would not of tolerated the sling or even tried to train with it. So I am really happy to hear all that.

You know I was thinking about how he did so well for the first 6 weeks, with his special bouncy shoe on the left, he looked pretty level. I guess during those days of cast changes and replacement of screws he was shifting his weight a little.

I was also wonderring, that maybe the most painful part of laminitis is when it first occurs and actually dislocates from the hoof wall. Maybe the worst part (most painful part)of it is over?? I realize it is a very painful illness, but somehow hoping that the worst of the pain has passed and whats left of it can be managed...

I am hoping and praying that the lamina (sp?) hardens up fast and shows signs of life.

I also was looking a few days ago at horses with laminitis, and have seen them re-grow the hoof, it is a very long process, and these horses did not have casts or slings or access to the pain management that NBC can offer. It may sound grim to some, But I am actually encouraged.

I am so pleased that NBC and the Jacksons were able to keep the lid on the laminitis until the press conference. Obviously they knew yesterday if not the day before. And again, this information really is none of our business, so I must thank the Jacksons for sharing Barbaro with us. Hopefully, the Jacksons get some comfort in knowing that they are not alone and that we support them 110%.

Well Barbaro, you nevermind all the fuss, what they said could happen, has happened and its no surprise to you...Like others have said, we need to take our cue from you, You just keep staying cool, calm and comfortable and we will keep on keeping on for you...

We are with you all the way, I will pray you have an uneventful day/night of rest. And if you want to rest your butt in that sling, go ahead.. we won't tell anyone :)

Love you big guy,

Someone posted a notice on the NBC message board...Lexington Herald-Leader (KY) - February 18, 2005 - A1 Main News SUPPORT FROM STRANGERS, WALKER GIVES MARE A CHANCE FOSTER CARETAKERS NURSING HORSE TO HEALTH The young mare takes her wheels for a spin outdoors. Maybe there is a harness/wheel support system to help him get around while he is recovering from Laminitis and broken bones.?? Someone else suggested silver Nitrates and another a 50/50 solution of Peroxide and water to soak the infected foot in. Lots of new ideas coming in....

I just ordered Bobby and staff a basket. Rachel answered the phone and when I told her what I wanted she giggled. She said they are pouring in. She also told me that he will MAKE IT!!! He is their home town boy and he is strong! He has too many people praying for him not to make it. We need to all get with Rachel and believe! I know in tough times and with the news not being good it can be hard, but there were some positives to it also, he is eating and alert, doesn't appear to be in pain. Bobby is going to pull through this. Keep the prayers coming. WE LOVE YOU BOBBY!!!!

Barbara, you are right. As long as he is comfortable and happy, we should breath a sigh of relief.

Posted by: Lynda at July 13, 2006 9:07 PM

Not exactly the kind of news I was hoping to read after I returned from my roadtrip. We were all hoping for a miracle. Looks like it's going to have to be a really, really big one. I just feel really sad for all those that are close to Bobby, and Bobby as well. He has tried so hard, everyone has, and you just wonder why such a great champion, with such great people surrounding him, have to go through this. Seems like it only happens to the tough ones and this is one tough group. So here's hoping for the best . . .but aware of the worst.

Live in the moment baby boy. You're comfortable right now, and that is all that matters. Make every moment comfortable OK?

Rest in your sling when you need to, listen to Dr. Richardson when he talks to you, listen to Michael, the Jacksons, Peter and Dr. Anderson.

Most of all, listen in your heart to all of us. We're sending "be strong" messages to you every single minute, every second. It never ends.

Beat the odds Bobby, you CAN do it.

Can anyone imagine Barbaro looking at the folks in his medical team with an expression that says he's ready to quit? I can't.

Even after his injury in the Preakness he seemed the calmest one around, and two days later he was almost bouncing around his stall.

C'mon, beautiful boy, you can win this one too!

Much love,
Irene

Janet, it doesn't only happen to the tough ones, or to the best, but those are the ones we hear about. Barbaro is just so fortunate to have the people around him that he has. Not every horse gets that. Some owners would do this with their horse, but they have no money, and some owners just don't care. God smiled down on Barbaro to put him with the Jacksons and Michael.

Barbaro stole my heart from the very first time I saw him run. He was the most graceful, athletic and cocky horse I've ever had the pleasure to lay my eyes on. And he's not only beautiful, but he seems to show some human emotions. There is the most awesome picture of him hugging one of his female doctors. He really does have a huge heart.

I would give anything I own just to be able to put my arms around his neck, look into those beautiful eyes and hug him for just a moment.

He'll always be my dream horse. Hugs 'n carrots you beautiful boy.

Barb--

An idea just came to me after reading kareen's post just above here...why don't you give Rachel at Kennett Florists a call? She sounds like she would do you some good. :-)) Maybe we can get an audio of her to have on this board--she sounds just super!

Dear Barbaro...you are loved more than you will ever know. Fight hard big guy.

Ok... maybe I'm a little naive, but as terrible as this news is, and it can't get any worse.... I feel very confident that Bobby is going to make it. He has alot going for him:

1-He is not just any horse. He has a spirit and strength that most don't. This is an incredible horse with tremendous will. Just watch him as he pulls away from the pack at the Kentucky Derby....

2-He has great owners who are sparing no expense to save him. Many horses do not make it because of resources. The Jacksons are great people... and care an awful lot about Bobby...

3-Could he have a better Dr? Dr. Richardson is the best there is. Just hearing him today, he followed every negagtive with a "but", "however", etc... And when he did think Bobby was going to make it, he never proclaimed this... he only went to 51%. So as bad as it may be.... and I could see he was upset... I think he knows deep down this horse has a good shot...

Also, I was prepared to hear there is difficulty in controlling infection, etc. But that is not the case, as a matter of fact Dr. R said he thought the right hind was "pretty much under control". I was ecstatic to hear that... So, unless I'm naive, it seems that our biggest obstacles are managing pain and Bobby's will... Dr. R said they have ways of managing pain that most places do not.... and does anyone question Bobby's will?

It will be a long road ahead... but I feel good about the right hind... and I am confident that Bobby and Dr. R will take care of the pain part. We just have to hang in there long enough to have that hoof to start healing and growing back... Hang in there Bobby... you're the best!!

Alex, thank you for this board and all your hard work... I can only imagine how much work it has been for you...

Barbara, I would like to think so. I think God smiled down on all of us to let us have Barbaro, even for just a little while.

Posted by: Lynda at July 13, 2006 9:29 PM

my fiancee just called me and said that bobby's discomfort levels are increasing -- i'm at work and can't substantiate that -- can anyone follow up on this?

Posted by: Barbara Kerr at July 13, 2006 9:30 PM

he was watching tv, btw.

Posted by: Barbara Kerr at July 13, 2006 9:30 PM

I can't leave today without wishing Barbaro a safe and restful evening, be strong and may all our prayer's be answered for a full recovery. These are the worst of times but we have to be hopeful and think positive for him. God bless this beautiful creature , may he feel no pain and only feel our love and comfort.

Whoever posted the Kennett Florist info--THANK YOU! They are SO nice and waited patiently for me to get myself under control. They have lots of produce on hand for Bobby and will be opening early tomorrow because of NBC runs.

Here's something new and nice: the florist said Bobby loves pears and ginger snaps. And they have 'em!!
