Barbaro Updates: 7

updates are now here.

Update 237: The Sports Center's piece was nice and upbeat, while of course respecting the true reality of the situation. It was nice to see Jeannine note Edgar's visit and use footage from the Derby (yeah!) The gifts look great.

Here is the site for Kennett Florists.

Tim ran Randy's Bullet today. He was a closing third on the turf at Colonial Downs. He had not run for a year. Iit was nice to see him come back, and Tim was very happy with him. I have mentioned Randy before, he is a cool horse to ride, but really is the type of horse to benefit from Fair Hill. He loves to go "out back", away from the training tracks, to do much of his training. (You can see me on Randy in a couple of the pictures in our gallery).

Mike Rea continues to make steady progress in his long recovery!

Finally, my perspective on Bobby's situation today. I am totally psyched he remains comfortable, but remain very conscious of the seriousness of his condition. Edgar Prado is simply an amazing human being. In England he would be considered for Sports Personality of the Year (top Jockeys in england are high profile stars); I wonder if there is something similar here.

Update 236: A Barbaro Vigil is planned for tomorrow (saturday) at 7 pm east coast time. I think Sheila's comment sums it up best:

I am going to bring my kids into this, even though it looks like we're set for 7pm EST. After seeing me cry I finally let in on why last night so it makes sense for them to be involved. The more positive energy, the better! Thanks for the suggestion Anita. I agree that we all my have different methods - for some it's prayer, some it's meditation, some its just sending positive energy, but we are united in our love for the big guy and I think that we should stay that way - united.

I don't think it matters how long the vigil, just if you can spare a thought, prayer, hope, sentiment etc. for Bobby at 7 pm tomorrow night (est), whereever you are, whatever you are doing.

Roberta wrote a lovely Bobby poem which I am reproducing below:

To Barbaro

With pride and joy
Flying wingless
Unconquerable
Roses on your neck

A new, more perilous race
Your spirit, determination and trust
Allied with skill, loving kindness and compassion
Against the frailties of flesh and bone and hoof
Against despair
Against death
May victory again be yours

Update 235: Nice to see NBC offering two releases today, this one 4pm: Barbaro's condition remains stable:

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro remains in stable condition according to his veterinarians at the George D. Widener Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania. "His vital signs, including heart rate and pulse, remain good," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "We are treating his laminitis aggressively and he continues to respond well and is acceptably comfortable."

Laminitis is a severe, painful condition in horses that can be fatal.

"As I said at the press conference on Thursday, we monitor his condition very closely because signs can change quickly," said Dr. Richardson. "However, it's important to remember that Barbaro's treatment could easily continue for several weeks, and if all goes well, even months. Our goal is to keep him as comfortable as possible, and clearly that comfort level will be a major indicator for our treatment decisions." Dr. Richardson also emphasized that Barbaro, as evident in the footage and still photos released yesterday, has a very positive attitude.

His positive attitude was noted by Peter during his visit today (Peter noted "good frame of mind").

Update 234: Peter Brette just called. He visited Bobby about 1:30 pm. He also reports Bobby is comfortable and appears in a good frame of mind. Peter was pretty happy with what he saw. He fed him some carrots, his appetite does appear to be holding up well. Peter was also not aware of Edgar's visit.

Update 232: A little more on Edgar's visit today. I just spoke to Ed Fontaine (New York Post) who just spoke to Edgar Prado (just before the 4th race at Belmont). Ed reports that Edgar (and his wife I guess) left New York at 4:30 am, arriving at NBC about 7:30 am. He stayed until about 9 am. At one point Bobby fell asleep on Edgar's shoulder for 10 minutes (hence Edgar's prolonged stay). Edgar told Ed that Bobby looked better than he thought he would be (given all he had heard), he appeared very comfortable.

The interesting thing about this story is that as far I can tell, no one was aware Edgar decided to visit. I spoke to a few people who had not heard about the visit after it was reported by Tripp Mickle of Newsday.

Update 231: Daphne has this report on Jeannine's 3:15 report from New Bolton:

**Alex** my tivo is on overtime and I just watched Jeannine 3:15 update.. good reporting. She did indicate that this is just a "shred more positive" than yesterday- that is what I heard. She spoke about Barbaro being able to sleep about 4-5 hours, also on his side, get up and down, being out of the sling(everything we've read) but that this is still (as we know) very serious. She mentioned all the floral/goody deliveries to NB and that the NB staff gobbled them down, beginning last evening. Ok, she didn't use the work gobble, this was my word. Also, many more deliveries expected later.

Jeannine will be on Sports Center (6pm) with a new report.

Update 230: Edgar made his third visit to Bobby today, he's all class, and of course won the ESPY too I believe! Like his fans, Barbaro's jockey still hopeful, the following is an excerpt:

The news left Prado scrambling to make a trip to visit the horse at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Penn. He just returned from California, leaves for a race in Florida tomorrow and heads to Peru, his homeland, on Sunday.

"The drive is really far and the traffic was awful, but we had to do this," Prado's wife, Lilian, said. "It was the only time he could see (Barbaro)."

The injured horse's stall felt more like a fruit stand than a barn, Prado said. Baskets of apples, carrots and candy -- all sent by the horse's fans across America - were everywhere.

Prado grabbed several carrots and fed the horse, which chomped down more than 10, the jockey said. It was an affirmation of the good appetite Dr. Richardson had described the day before, Prado added.

"The horse appears to be handling things well," he said. "He wanted to get out of the stall today, which is a good sign."

Update 229: Jeannine Edwards did a piece on ESPN2, a comment from Anne:

Just saw Jeannine Edwards on ESPN (2:10pm est) doing an update on Barbaro. MUCH more upbeat than yesterday. She mentioned that Barbaro's internet fans were devastated and that NB received about 25 baskets of goodies for Barbaro and the staff after yesterday's news. Hopefully this will be run again all day long......very uplifting. Did anyone else catch it?

She is about to go live on ESPN news (its 3:13 now), and I think she will be on Sports Center tonight.

ESPN has some cool pictures of Bobby and a few were added to the New Bolton site.

Update 228: The official word, New Bolton's press release today: Barbaro's condition is stable:

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro spent a restful night and his condition is stable, according to Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. At a news conference yesterday, Dr. Richardson announced that the three-year-old colt has laminitis. Laminitis is a painful condition in horses that can be the result of a number of causes, including excessive weight bearing in one limb. It occurs when laminae, the strong connecting tissues that attach the pedal bone and the inner hoof wall, are inflamed.

"Barbaro was out of his sling for more than 12 hours yesterday, and he had a calm, restful night, sleeping on his side for more than four hours," said Dr. Richardson. "While his condition is stable, it remains extremely serious."

Update 227: Bloodhorse (and many others) confirm Barbaro had a good night last night: Barbaro 'Doing Much Better' Friday Morning. The following is an excerpt:

"He had a good night last night, and even slept on his side," Dr. Dean Richardson told The Associated Press early Friday before re-entering the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals to check again on the 3-year-colt. "He's doing much better."

Richardson appeared a bit more upbeat than he was Thursday, when he told a packed news conference that Barbaro has a severe case of the disease laminitis in his left hind leg, and termed his condition "poor."

This confirms what we learned from Michael Matz this morning (update 226).

Sabina Pierce left the following comment:

I'm the Photographer for Penn who has been shooting Big B, as I like to call him as his personality is larger than life. I tried to show in this last set how great he looks and is doing, but also how his will and personality to overcome are identical to the way they have been over his 2 month stay at NBC, he is naughty at times with his nips but a cuddly teddy bear a minute later. I saw all of those attributes as he chewed on my camera bag and hammed for the lense. I've had horses since I was 6 and I've known many more. He is special and a real fighter, the real thing.
Sincerley, Sabina louise pierce

Jeannine Edwards just called. ESPN is planning more coverage, but she is not sure when yet. She'll try to alert us ahead of time.

Thank you, Alex.

BELIEVER IN BARBARO!

I think the Jackson's need to name Barbaro's full brother, "Dr. Dean" or use some form of the name of the gentleman that so dearly loves this horse.

New Bolton just posted news for today. It pretty much reiterates what we have been hearing, but it's nice to get it straight from the horses mouth..no pun intended! Have a great day, all, and keep it up Bobby, you continue to amaze us all. Love to you.

Good morning Barbaro ! Good morning to all !

Bobby ,I am so gald you were able to sleep last night ! Rest and healing ! Amen !

Bobby is very confident in his surroundings. Such an intellegent horse ! I watched the UPenn video, very encouraging, Bobby is more conerned about that carrot and he is so co-operative. I think Dr. R has a confident & calming attitude as well !

Good morning VBB's

All I can say is " THANK GOD " .. thats what I said when I read the news release.

I am so happy Barbaro took a much needed and well deserved 5 hour nap!!

It's funny too because last night, I said that my dog Zeena was passed out and sleeping on her blankey, and that I wished Barbaro could sleep as soundly as her... I got my wish!!

Good thoughts for you beautiful boy, all day!

I am so relieved...sheesh...let's all exhale a collective sigh of relief, and re-gather our energy for the next coming days.

Barbaro, please continue to rest, and enjoy your carrots and all the treats coming your way.

To Alex, again many thanks, what more can I say. You are terrific.

To Dr.R, coming from you the words 'stable' is like hitting the lottery. Please get some rest.

Just a note to people asking about how Barbaro is walking, do not read anything into it, remember he has enough hardware in his right hind to sink a battleship, ( dont forget its fractured )and his left foot has a foot cast to let him walk, most horses in this situation sadly, would not be walking at all.

Personally I am very encouraged to see him get around so well. And the fact that he gets up and down in his stall is quite frankly, an amazing feat given the problems in his rear legs. It's a terrific sign, and I will take what I can get.

Lots of love to my VBB's today, lets enjoy this day for Barbaro! He is well rested and comfortable, we got our wishes...

Sending you lots of love this morning.

Once again, thank you Alex for your continuous updating of Bobby's condition/progress. It is wonderful to hear that he rested so comfortably last night....Bobby is a true warrior at heart and is not about to let this disease get him down, I just feel that in my heart! You go, Bobby, you can beat this thing! God Bless and love ya!

Posted by: Ruth Ann at July 14, 2006 4:25 PM

Barbaro, keep fighting Sweetie - I KNOW you can do this. You have shown in so many ways that you are a super champ above all other super champs. What a desire and will to live! Wish you knew the love and the following you have garnered and the feelings you have evoked in people around the world. YOU ARE SO SPECIAL!

To those keeping this website current - YOU HAVE BEEN A GOD-SENT! I check in with you at least 20 times a day and know you will be the first to get info to us on our beloved Barbaro. You've gone above and beyond the call of duty and we who so love Barbaro will be eternally grateful to you during these trying months with "Our Boy". THANK YOU!

One question: nothing was said at the conference yesterday, but what is the situation with prosthetics for horses??

Posted by: Karen at July 14, 2006 4:29 PM

So glad to hear Bobby had a good night, & rested well. I just printed a wonderful picture of Barbaro, that Barbara Livingston has allowed us to print for our own use. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful pictures of Barbaro with those of us who have loved Bobby, way before the Derby. The first time I saw Bobby in February, in his stall chewing on straw/hay, i thought he was the most magnificent thoroughbred I had ever laid my eyes on.(Over 60 years) Then, when I saw him run in the Holy Bull & Florida Derby & reviewed his 3 Grass Races, I realized that I was watching maybe the greatest Thorougbred ever. His presence/demeanor are almost over whelming. He's a Champ all-right..I have all his great pictures right next to my computer & they bring a smile to my face every day. Thank you Bobby, After-all, how often does one really see greatness...

GELATIN GROWS HOOF

Alex, would you please pass this little hint on to the Powers that Be around your NEIGHborhood? And all horse people, take note - this is a really good thing to do for your horses.

Speaking of gelatin (as another poster and I just did in advice re pilling a cat [now cached already] - use empty gelatin caps) - provides a nice segue into something I was going to talk about today, in view of the L word condition presently being fought. GELATIN. Makes hooves grow.

Long as I'm in the Jewish Mother mode (wo den?) centering on getting the nutrition in (Eat! Eat!), it's time to trot out one more natural remedy that is a nobrainer as far as I'm concerned if you wanna grow hoof. I know we're dealing with the best brains in the business, and they know all the cutting edge stuff - but this one is so simple, it may not be within their realm of remedies. Those brains are busy with the hi-tech stuff, and this is just too easy.

Gelatin.

The same stuff we ingest to make our fingernails grow and be strong. (Oh - right - hooves are same deal as our fingernails - yeah.) Not only that, gelatin is also a natural joint assistant, useful in arthritis in people and in horses, at least, my horses. (Is anybody else using this, horse people?) I know there are commercial hoof products and farrier's formulas out there with stuff like biotin, but I don't know if any contain plain old GELATIN.

When my last mare had trouble holding shoes on, my farrier told me to add some powdered gelatin to her feed, to help her hooves grow and strengthen. She firmed up right away and I never stopped using it. Then I read in some health news or other that lo and behold, gelatin is also used for relief with joint problems in humans. There being no reason NOT to, I've been using gelatin powder for my horses ever since. A heaping tablespoonful of the plain powder, mixed with her other supplements, split into 2 portions and added to her grain twice daily at feeding time.

While you can get the powder in little individual packets (e.g., Knox Gelatin, available at almost any grocery store), it is much more economical to get in bulk (5 lbs) which my health food store guy orders for me.

Hope this info is useful to somebody out there. Peace, Love, Hope. CJ the crazy cat lady (Blackie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond, IN

(ps I just emailed this to Alex, Gail Luciani at U Penn, Dr. R, and Michael Matz.)

Sabina,

So you're the one who took the shot seen around the world - Barbaro being lifted out of the recovery pool. Marvelous photos and video, thank you!

And thanks also for your comments about the big guy. We can't get enough of that stuff!

Dear Friends:

Praise the Lord and Pass the Carrots.

I feel better today.

I am grateful to Bobby for reminding me that in life one must take the bitter with the sweet and do so with grace and dignity.

I have sent my card, will have a gift delivered today and am just about to order my model horse.

To end on a Churchillian note, I would like to tell Bobby and all those closest to him:

Never, Never, Never Give Up!

Dear and Brave Barbaro,
We ache for you and we're praying for you. You can do it, you can! Miracles happen. And we're so hoping for your recovery. My beloved Welsh Cob, developed laminitis from Azium, and it's been a really hard road, touch and go for the first 4 months, stall rest for more, pain, pressure ulcers, grey hair (his over his eyes and on my head!), stupendous teammwork by farrier and vet plus their brilliant brainpower, and...one and a half YEARS post onset...he's totally sound and walking with me in hand up to 7 miles, rode for first time yesterday 5 min. Sadly, we're too familiar with laminitis, but, thankfully, we know about miracles, too. We're expecting one for you and asking Mother Nature for yours every day. Love, Jenny and Andreas

Tim&Alex are the best. I just lit my first candle. It is a beautiful site. Healing thoughts and positive energy for our beautiful one.

I said I wasn't going to do this today - check the site all day long - but here I am and I'm glad I did! It seems that this is a decent day for our boy. Does anyone know if this is a situation whereby his condition will be improved with the passage of days, even though it takes months to fully recover? I guess what I'm asking is that, after a week or two of "comfortable", does this mean that Bobby's chances are improved a little? Or will it be day by day for 6 whole months? I don't think I can stand it! I will lose my 10 pounds I've been trying to lose though for the past 5 years! :)

I said I wasn't going to come here most of today either. But, here I am, for the moment. I also have this thing called "work" rearing it's ugly head this morning.

Yesterday was horrible. I couldn't sign in here alot to get comfort from all of you as I was under a hugh deadline at work. Watched the press conference on cbs3.com and then had to pretend to be normal the rest of the day.

Today, it's better, deadline gone, Bobby "stable", but I'm still wanting to just be around the "family" this morning. Thank you all for being there.

Getting way behind at work again, but will just sneak in here this weekend and catch up.

Now, as I've written a number of times recently, here's my daily (and now multi-hourly) mantra:

Bless him
Heal him
Keep him strong

Lillian, I too am a fan of Churchill's speech. If I remember correctly, he gave this speech to a graduating class. Eton, Oxford ,??? somewhere!! I read that was the entirety of the speech--he looked at them and said the line you wrote earlier--never, never, never give up. Perhaps that is a great philosophy and we all should use it for Barbaro. Thanks for the reminder. BB

Been too emotional and exhausted to post last few days but encouraged today. Here'e column from Chalotte Observer thought all you special people would enjoy, couldn't have said it better. Barbaro Rules!

Barbaro's valiant race could be on its final run

TOM SORENSEN

If you want to see a tough guy turn tender, invoke Barbaro. America doesn't have a team, but it has a horse.

Living means more than staying alive, and if the colt can't escape his pain, his owner will allow him to sleep the permanent sleep.

Barbaro has undergone four surgeries since he was injured at the start of the Preakness Stakes two months ago. The hope was that the surgeries and the six casts he has worn would enable him to overcome the devastating injury to his right hind leg. Alas, that hope appears slim.

I don't want to embellish this, but I suspect most of us can remember where we were when we saw the replay of the injury, if we missed the race. Calls were made, e-mail exchanged. Did you see it? We saw it. It was horrific, a simple misstep, a shattered leg and a life altered and maybe ended.

Even if we don't follow horse racing the way we follow football we wanted to see Barbaro win the Preakness. The colt won the Kentucky Derby by a staggering 6 1/2 lengths. The rest of the field might as well have been running in mud. For Barbaro, it was as if a smooth red carpet had been rolled all the way around the track.

We like greatness, and this was it. Until the Preakness, Barbaro had run six races and won them all. Find me an athlete who was having a better year.

Animals can be cocky, obnoxious and willful, petulant, put-upon and ungrateful, and aren't they great? The people I trust most have an instinctive love for animals. How we treat them is one of those qualities that tells the world who we are. Anybody who abuses an animal that can't fight back or call the cops is worthless.

If you kick the dog, leave it outside on a sweltering summer day or dress it like some four-legged Barbie, have at it. But I hope when you get to St. Peter -- if there is a St. Peter -- he's wearing a PETA button and holding a leash.

My dogs are no Barbaro, but the idea of having to put one of them down is impossibly sad. They're not obedient. If I say sit or stay or roll over they look at me as if I should be put down. What are they, seals?

I can't imagine life without them. I call them when I travel, take them for walks downtown because I worry about them becoming too suburban, and buy them gifts at least once a week. And not once has Nike, the Boston, or Caymus, the greyhound that rescued his rescuers, looked at a gift and said, "You expect me to wear that in public?"

Not that I would buy them clothes. No dog wants to wear clothes, except for a poodle, maybe. They want bones, they want treats and they want to run and explore and be loved.

My dogs get to me and Barbaro got to us. He looked as if he loved to run, and he did it beautifully. Most of us saw him finish only one race. He is 3 years old.

I have visited the grave of Secretariat. I hope I'm ancient before I have the opportunity to pay my respects to Barbaro.

I have a magnet on my refrigerator that says:

"Noah had a wooden boat, 2 termites, and a lot of faith"

Please don't give up hope...I beleive in miracles and the power of prayer and all of you VERY special people that continue to believe too!

Love you bunches baby Barbaro and know that God is blessing you with your biggest VICTORY ever!

Much love and kisses and hugs!!!

Skyler I am in your shoes - work is piling up all around me but I want to be with "the family" too because it is giving me a lot of comfort. all the positive energy is helping me calm down. I could not concentrate at all yesterday and today I am trying to accomplish some tasks but I need to be with you all to help me hold myself together. I was sick all night with the intestinal thing I always get when upset but that has started going away when I read about Bobby's comfortable night with the healing sleep. I just know that all the notes and cards and things are really helping the Jacksons, all Bobby's people, Dr.R and the great NBC staff all the way to the stable hands mucking the stalls and in turn that generates into feelings of positivity and happiness that then flow into Bobby. I know we have to work to live but this is LIFE!

Bobby, we are overjoyed that you keep on being comfy and are stable and IMPROVING. You and Team Barbaro are surrounded by our love and healing thoughts and positive energy. And we are so glad to know that you continue to enjoy the showering of carrots and pears and gingersnaps! Edgar Prado said it best yesterday. And Michael Matz smiling today is enough to make us smile too!

Thank God for the news! I was afraid of what I might find on the site this morning. I don't know when I've said more prayers. Bobby was constantly in my thoughts and prayers during my run this morning...

Dear Friends: I know we're all comforted & relieved to know that Bobby had a good night & is doing better today. Thank God, & thank you all for your prayers & good thoughts for our boy!

Just want to caution everyone not to let our guard down at all as far as vigilant & diligent prayerful work for Bobby. We must continue to "see" him as the perfectly healthy horse that God created -- not susceptible to any bad thing.

Haven't finished reading all the new posts yet this morning, but I did see someone mention something about a novena, & someone else said something about pausing this Sat. for a moment to focus on Bobby. Those are great ideas! I wonder if we could pick a specific day & time (in our respective time zones) that we could all pause together for a while to focus prayer on Bobby? Many people do not work on Sat or Sun, so I wonder (even w/our busy lives) if we could set aside maybe 10-15 mins.--all of us together at the same time-- to dedicate prayer/meditation(whatever your spiritual/religious beliefs are) to Bobby. (Is that too much time in one sitting?) Something we can all agree on so we can all come together at one specific time & day. What are your thoughts on this?

Based on what Dr. R. said yesterday about the seriousness of this condition & the reduced percentages of survival (even though he's stable today), Bobby definitely needs our continuing heavy-duty prayerful support in these critical early days following this "setback".

For Bobby's sake, we cannot afford to get lax, which might be the tendency a few days from now when new reports continue to be released that he's doing better. Human nature has a tendency, when things are going well for a while, to breathe a sigh of relief & think, "Whew, he's doing better now; he's on the mend; we can relax." That's fine...to a point...but we all got "spoiled" when he was progressing steadily for 6 wks. following the initial surgery...then suddenly the "rug was pulled out from under us". We don't want to get caught off guard like that again. We can't take it for granted, as we start getting these good reports, that he's out of danger. We will need to conscientiously affirm God's continuing protection of Bobby on a daily basis to support him through this. I know we are willing & eager to do that; I'm just stressing this b/c I don't want us to get lax. We need to stay on top of this thing.

Thanks again everyone, for the wonderful things going on, on this bd. I'm so grateful to a poster on the NBC bd who mentioned this site. I had been stuck over there waiting for those weekly reports.

They responded today that NBC might consider outside consultation if they know about the options available and people start a grass roots effort to let them know they can help. I am sending an e-mail with information of this hospital to Ms. Luciani. I hope this can help somehow.
thank you,

Skyler...I love the idea of naming Boby's baby brother after Dr. Richardson...how about "Richardson" for a name...it sounds regal enough for his little brother...think we can send some suggestions...ha ha! Actually, someone had said that they heard they were planning on naming him after another foxound in the painting.

I aso glad to hear that Bobby had a good night...we will take it day by day...

Now that the Barbaro news is so good, it feels even better to engage in some light-hearted levity.

Just had a comment ready to post and Pearl (one of my cat-kids) managed to make me lose it. I'll try once again:

Had to stop reading the new comments to write this, when I got to Lillian's post that says:

Praise the Lord and pass the carrots!

Since I'm such a stickler for credit when due, and since he's such a fave of mine - and I only recently learned of the attribution - I wanted to tell you the source of the song, "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition," to which Lillian's priceless invocation pays homage. (Who else remembers that one? When I mention it from on-stage, most people aren't aware of it.)

It was written by Frank Loesser, better known for Guys and Dolls, among other great musicals. He also wrote my favorite WW II song, Rodger Young, about a hero who so impressed SciFi icon Robert Heinlein that he named a starship after him.

Hope you all don't mind the extraneous info, now that our hearts are not so heavy - thanks to Dr. R's press release today and our inside info from Alex, direct from the horse's mouth.

Lillian, you're one in a million!

Peace, Love, Hope. CJ the crazy cat lady (Blackie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond, IN

This is sooooooooo going to be a one-day-at-a-time thing now! The best part is that no one is giving up-especially our wonderful Barbaro!! It is just amazing that he seems to be taking everything in stride despite what he has gone through in the last week or so. Just hang in there, buddy!! Everyone here is keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

I just think it's wonderful how so many people have come together to support "Bobby". No matter what the outcome I think we have silenced the critics who claim that the horsepeople and fans of racing could care less about the horses. This morning NBC was again crowded with gifts to Barbaro from many places and all kinds of people of all ages.
The email sites here and at UPenn are receiving new postings by the minute. Many of these people have never even been to a racetrack. It's very, very special!! Add to that wonderful owners and his racing team plus the totally dedicated Dr.'s and staff at New Bolton.

Let's none of us give up on this great horse, mainly because he isn't giving up. Keep all the positive thoughts and prayers coming!! He still has a shot!!

I apologize in advance for this long post, this was an article in today's Dallas Morning News.....

Barbaro ... a tragedy looms for horse racing

11:19 AM CDT on Friday, July 14, 2006

"Always bet the jockey," my grandmother instructed me, "not the horse."

Then she'd lead me to the two-dollar window and eventually down to the rail. To watch the trotters at Rosecroft during winter. To see the thoroughbreds at Laurel and Pimlico in the spring and at Charlestown in West Virginia over the summer and fall.

There were few things I became fonder of as a boy than watching the horses run. Then came that afternoon in the summer of '75 when, like so many others around the country, I watched that beautiful filly Ruffian break down on television in what turned out to be a fatal battle of the sexes match race against Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure.

It would be a number of years before I could watch horse racing again without glancing away as if it was some nauseating operating-room documentary with close ups of blood and guts. And every time I seemed to regain some comfort, another tragedy reared itself to turn me away, as it did a number of years ago watching England's Grand National steeplechase as several horses fell and died or had to be, as they say nicely around the tracks, put down as a result.

Now, in the wake of heartwarming stories about Giacomo and Smarty Jones and Funny Cide, comes the heartbreaking story of Barbaro. This year's Kentucky Derby winner was said on Thursday to be fighting for his life as the result of the grotesque right hind leg breaks he suffered at the Preakness and the three surgeries he's undergone since then. A horrible infection has set in.
And two weeks after Barbaro was hustled into an ambulance at the Preakness, a favorite to win the English Derby, Horatio Nelson, suffered a double break in a leg 600 yards from the end and had to be euthanized.

The sport of kings just got difficult for me to watch again.

The irony about what has happened to Barbaro is that the immediate attention he received was championed as sign of how much emergency care for racehorses has improved. The jockey sensed the injury right away and brought Barbaro to a halt. Ruffian had galloped on a ways. The specially designed ambulance was quickly on the scene and Barbaro was lifted into it with little apparent jostling.

Some observers that afternoon said that in the old days there would've been no hope for such an injured horse other than to extinguish its life.

Maybe Barbaro would've suffered such a quick fate had he not been the property of such wealthy owners as Gretchen and Roy Jackson but instead was the lucky buy of some high school buddies as was Funny Cide.

Since then, however, we've also been reminded of how much more tenuous a racehorse's life has become. They've been bred for more strength and speed on those spindly legs that support all that marvelously chiseled muscle. They're being pushed more and at younger ages. And, like boxers, no matter all the safety improvements, they can still die while entertaining us.

Dr. David Nunamaker, professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and the chairman of clinical studies at New Bolton Center, where Barbaro is struggling to survive, told The Associated Press on the eve of last month's Belmont Stakes that nearly two horses every 1,000 starts don't survive. According to his research, that means about 704 horses died in races run in this country and in Canada last year. The Jockey Club counted 57,495 races and 469,644 starts in 2005.

More shockingly, that also means about two horses died every day. It is a brutal sport, indeed. If that many boxers died every day, boxing really would be a sport of the past. So would any other sport with such a high fatality rate.

It's just that the struggles of a Barbaro and the death of a Horatio Nelson or Ruffian rarely grab our attention because most horse races don't take place on national television with so much pomp and circumstance. They happen on regular races days on the horse racing circuit at tracks, some famous and most not – such as Laurel, where my grandmother often took me – all around the country. It is a distressing reality of a thrilling sport performed by athletes who can't speak for themselves and whose representation is only as good as a blind draw from a hat.

I don't know when I'll be able to stomach watching horse racing again, but I will stick to my grandmother's sage advice.

I won't bet on Barbaro. Instead, I'm going to pray for him. C'mon, Barbaro!

Alex, could you maybe decide and post us all a day and time for this? I think it should be ASAP so that would be tomorrow Saturday. I totally agree with Loretta that we cannot let our guard down at all with our healing thoughts and positive energies for Bobby no matter how long it takes. Look what happened when we did - we all thought "everything was coming up roses" and we became complacent and lax. I am just picturing all the new cards, notes and things coming into NBC and that combined with the positive news this morning has to uplift the spirits of the people there and I know Bobby is picking up on all that. He is very perceptive and there are new interesting things going on and the activity of putting all the stuff out and he has new things to look at and smell to prick his curiosity and stimulate him.Healing thoughts and positive energies!

Good morning "Family Barbaro!" I was very relieved to turn on the television/computer this morning and see the good news. Sounds like Bobby slept a lot better than I did! Good for you sweet boy!

Skyler, I love the idea about naming Bobby's little brother after Dr. Richardson. I think "Dr. R." sounds catchy!

I'm lighting two candles for Bobby every day now-one each morning and one each night. I know we must take Bobby's condition one day at a time, but maybe, just maybe, our collective prayers are beginning to kick in! Remember what they say, there is POWER IN NUMBERS!

Thanks to all of you for loving this magnificent horse so much. I, too, have people in my life that think it's ridiculous how much time I'm investing in Barbaro, and that's all right. I feel bad for them that they don't understand what it is to love an animal so much. I have always believed that our ability to love animals makes us better people. It shows we have the capability to care about something outside of our selves; that we are capable of nurturing and being completely responsible for the physical, as well as emotional, well-being of another living creature. I have never been able to understand those who are devoid of love for animals. Our common binding tie on this site, obviously, is our love for Bobby. What makes it even more amazing is most of us, I assume, never personally knew this horse or have had the privilege of actually meeting him. In my book, that makes each and every one of you so special; the kind of people that this world needs more of, and for that, I thank you. It's a privilege to be here with you all and to share in our love for our sweet, precious Barbaro.

We love you so Barbaro! Get well big boy!

Posted by: Judy Walker in Washington at July 14, 2006 6:17 PM

Sheila - you might even want to bring the kids in on this, they don't need to be totally quiet, just to send their lovely, innocent thoughts to a beautiful animal in need of compassion. They might just want to do it, you never know.

Will check for the time when I get home.

Cathy, I think this Sat. at 7 PM EST looks like the most promising unless we hear from different time zones where they'd have to be up in the middle of the night. Then we could readjust.

Posted by: Anita at July 14, 2006 6:17 PM

Judy - Washington, D.C. or the state of Washington?

Posted by: Anita at July 14, 2006 6:20 PM

Thank God for the restful night and stable condition. All things considered, that's wonderful news.

Someone on this site asked how to pray. This morning (before I logged on) I heard by chance a radio program on how to pray. They said to pray SPECIFICALLY for what you want. In other words, not just that Barbaro get better, but ask for specific healing: pray the hoof wall regrows, that God removes the infection and laminitis from his left hoof, that the pastern joint heals quickly, that the infection from that area is removed, that he is standing firming and securely on all fours (and anything else I didn't remember). Pray God is surrounding Barbaro with a hedge of protection and that He is healing Barbaro with His supernatural power. Also, that God continues to guide Dr. Richardson and give him super-ability to heal and the strength and will to continue, and that the Jacksons will continue to allow Barbaro the chance to heal. All for the glory of God, in Jesus name. They said to give thanks, mean business when you pray, and keep at it. I've often heard persistence and determination can make the difference between losing and winning.

Barbaro is so dear, so special, and the Jacksons and Dr. Richardson are to be commended for their exceptional courage and determination. I think they will win.

Sabrina, thank you for the beautiful pictures of our dear Bobby, and, yes, Loretta, I think that it is a great idea to select a time period for all of us to direct our positive energy, love and prayers to Bobby at the same time.

In regard to outside veterinarian consultation, a while back there was a message (article?) from a vet at the Equine Hospital at Colorado State University (CSU).. I do not know much about their Equine Hospital and staff, but CSU is known as one of the very best vetinarian teaching schools in the Nation. I would not be surprized if there has been some consultation back and forth with CSU.

I failed to post yesterday since there was an extended family tradegy, but I did try .. fuzzy headed me failed to notice the new updates on the right side of the page until just recently.

A bit earlier I visited the candle site, and there are more than 4,700 candles lit from 82 countries for our dear Bobby

I continue to pray and send positive thoughts to our dear Bobby and connections .. I was heartened to hear that, at least at the moment, that he is stable and to see him walking around and eating a carrot .. thank you to Alex and all for the updates and posting the site for this video. Thank you so much to my Barbaro family at this site for your support. Together, We can and we WILL make a difference!
As always, God Bless Bobby .. our dear, dear Bobby !!

You can definitely count on me for Saturday 7 p.m. to contribute my thoughts and prayers for our Bobby. I think I will also light a single candle for 1 hour. Anyone else want to light a real candle for our beloved? Sort of a candle vigil across the world?

Where I live (out in the boonies) there is no Internet connection so I am going to be in total darkness and cut off from my Barbaro Family over the weekend. I absolutely hate to rely on the news media for any updates on Bobby. They tend to "taint" the information at times. This weekend will be very difficult for me, not knowing as well as not having my touchstone I have found in the people posting here at this site.

At times I have scolded myself for being "nutty", crying, and heavily emotional over this animal that I have not even seen in person. But when I come here and read the posts I feel right at home...yeppers, I might have just called some of you nutty, and emotional, but I sure do love you because you feel the love for animals just as strongly as I do. Kindred spirits. The rest of the world just doesn't "get it".

I want to thank Lillian P.-for the laughs, Skyler-for the beautiful words that bring peace and hope, Chris Byers-I know just how you feel! Loretta-for your spiritual strength. C.J.-You crack me up! Roberta and Jeanette Cavalier -what you both wrote to Barbaro had to be the "perfect prayers", a tearful thank you. I can't find the name of the person who sent the basket from “all of us”, but WOW! You’re awesome! All the rest of you who post your thoughts, prayers, tears and fears, thank you. AND now ALEX!!!! Thank you so much for your patients and diligence in keeping us nuts up-to-date. The team at NBC, they have most important jobs to do, even when our special boy is no longer in their care they will still be there working miracles with God’s little creatures that need help and should not be forgotten. A standing ovation to all of you!

I’m still prayin. I still trust God knows best. And I still love that bugger tremendously and want with all my heart for him to enjoy a rumpus roll in lusciously green, wind blown pastures.

I am not a "prayer-warrior" by any stretch of the imagination--but please keep all of us together.

We all do things our own way--but--EVERYONE PLEASE REMEMBER--WE ARE WORKING FOR THE SAME THINGS--AND WE ARE DOING IT TOGETHER!

We can all choose to read what works for us.

We are all committed to a POSITIVE environment--nothing here is or should be negative!

And remember:
REFUSE TO LOSE
REFUSE TO LOSE
REFUSE TO LOSE
REFUSE TO LOSE
REFUSE TO LOSE
REFUSE TO LOSE
REFUSE TO LOSE
REFUSE TO LOSE

Phyllis, THANK YOU for that SOBERING article.

Just last night, while I was praying for Barbaro, the thought crossed my mind that Barbaro had been born a healthy horse, and only b/c of the racehorsing sport, which he had NO say in choosing, is he now fighting for his life. At THREE YRS. OLD, for God's sake!

Just like the author of that article, I will never again be able to "enjoy" horseracing; especially now that the article has pointed out the extreme # of fatalities!

I was never into betting...I just always have liked to watch them run, & enjoyed the excitement of such a thrilling event. I marveled at their beauty, grace, and fitness as they trotted out before the start of each race.

I've been glued to the TV watching their bid for the Triple Crown since I was a little girl, and enjoyed other televised races too. But now...I think I will be sick to my stomach to watch another race. Even if I watch, I will not be able to forget the fatality statistics of this sport which I now know to be "brutal".

How chilling & true is the statement in that article about these horses dying just to ENTERTAIN us! And since that's true -- judging from the fatality statistics -- that means we're no better than the Romans, who tortured the Christians for their entertainment!

Therefore, all of us who have "enjoyed" this sport in any way, shape, or form -- cannot now fail to know -- in light of this information -- that we have become the "Romans", sending these beautiful creatures to their death through our support of this sport!

Two horses a day dying, in races all over the country/world, is two horses too many!

Thank you again for that post. Progress & improvement only come when people are enlightened. That article shed critical light on this sport that I, for one, never knew was so brutal. God help us! I now know that in a small, small way, I am partly responsible for what has happened to Barbaro. If no one supported this sport, that beautiful horse might have grown up on a lovely farm, living out his days playing, and galloping, and grazing in the sunshine -- living a normal equine life -- just as their Creator intended them to do.

How do the rest of you feel about the SHOCKING statistics in that article?

I love Dr Dean for Barbaro's little broter. That man needs to be honored in some great way and that would certainly do it!!!

Jill's the one who sent the basket from us all, and what do you guys think about continuing that tradition? The gifts & wishes will maybe taper off next week but we could each commit to sending something every day from us all. It doesn't have to be huge & expensive, just consistent.

Jeremy, Yes, I agree w/you. People should read, think whatever suits their beliefs. That's why in my post I referred to it as prayer/meditation...so people would know that I understand we're all coming from different belief systems. Some people are not Christian...that's ok; some are Atheist; that's ok too. Most people at least have a belief system that allows for positive thought that can used for healing purposes; and most people believe in a Deity...whether that be God, Buddah...whatever.
Our focused positive thought -- however we formulate that thought -- can be very therapeutic for Barbaro.

There are now 788 candles from 9 countries....

Posted by: Tracie at July 14, 2006 6:56 PM

I think we are all appalled at the thought of any number of animals dying to "entertain" us and please do not be offended in any way by this, BUT my thoughts are only on well wishes and prayerful thoughts about this dadgummed horse that I want to continue to get better minute by minute and day by day. When Bobby's more better, then I'm ready to debate / discuss the notion of racing these horses that love to race so much. Not before.

Posted by: David at July 14, 2006 6:57 PM

David, I agree. We all have different viewpoints but we are united in one thing - GETTING BARBARO BETTER. Lets not let our diversity deteriorate our purpose here. Plus, consider Alex, whose livelihood is about this sport and who has graciously kept us informed about Bobby when the mainstream media didn't. The debate over the sport is for another place and another time.

Posted by: Sheila at July 14, 2006 7:00 PM

David - I hear ya! I will be on your side in the debates - but not until Barbaro is safe!

Not the change the subject, but I came across this article on Edgar Prado coming to PA to visit Barbaro. If this has already been posted, please ignore. It mentions it was his third time to visit.

http://www.newsday.com/sports/horseracing/ny-spprado0715,0,3512672.story?coll=ny-sports-headlines

The beginning of the story (sorry for the length)

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. -- Long before the sun rose, Edgar Prado pulled himself from bed and climbed into the passenger seat of his white Ford Explorer. His wife, Lilian, took the wheel and the two made the more than three-hour journey from Garden City to Pennsylvania.

Neither knew what they would find, but Prado feared the worst. He expected to find Barbaro, the horse he rode to victory at the Kentucky Derby and later slowed to a halt in the Preakness Stakes, laying on the ground, weak and inert. Prado discovered the opposite.

"He was awake and in good spirits," Prado said. "He's was putting weight on both legs and swaying back and forth. He looked good."

It was only Prado's third visit to see the horse since Barbaro's initial operation on May 21. His last trip was three weeks ago, making this the first time he'd seen the horse since his condition worsened earlier this week.

Way to go, Edgar!! Wish you well in the ESPYs Sunday!!

it appears 7 pm eastern time tomorrow has been selected for a "vigil". I am reposting Sheila's comment as it seems to capture the idea that how ever you "pray" 7 pm could work ?

I am going to bring my kids into this, even though it looks like we're set for 7pm EST. After seeing me cry I finally let in on why last night so it makes sense for them to be involved. The more positive energy, the better! Thanks for the suggestion Anita. Just to confirm: Is everyone choosing 7pm EST tomorrow, Saturday? I'll check in later w/all to make sure. Whatever time is ultimately decided on, post it as "EST", so everyone can figure out his/her own time zone. I'm in Central Time, so for me that's an hour earlier. Don't forget to post the day so everyone will know, as well as how much time we will all devote in that particular sitting, i.e., 10 mins? 15? more? Thanks.

Posted by: Loretta at July 14, 2006 7:04 PM

Sheila, I will gladly join in on the gift sending.
Let's get every one together that wants to and pick a day for each. Like you said, it doesn't have to be much $$$$ wise, just something so they know we have not NOR WILL WE EVER FORGET OUR BOBBY!

One of the things that I love about this site and our virtual family is that I can always read up
on the great new items that everyone finds.

Today, the new pics of Bobby have given me such joy. He looks like he has a set of the old "walkman" headsets on, and it really gave me a much needed chuckle.

In the photo where Bobby and Dr.R 'share a moment,' did it strike anyone else that our much loved Dr. R looks exhausted? It also looks like he has lost weight (Bobby isn't the only one!)

That is my impression. Does anyone else see this?
I wish we could send Dr. R. a certificate for one
good night's rest. He has done so much for us.

Love you guys,

Just saw Jeannine Edwards on ESPN (2:10pm est) doing an update on Barbaro. MUCH more upbeat than yesterday. She mentioned that Barbaro's internet fans were devastated and that NB received about 25 baskets of goodies for Barbaro and the staff after yesterday's news. Hopefully this will be run again all day long......very uplifting. Did anyone else catch it?

Posted by: Anne at July 14, 2006 7:13 PM

Alex, I see your confirmation of 7pm Eastern Time tomorrow, Saturday, for "vigil". How many minutes?

Posted by: Loretta at July 14, 2006 7:13 PM

7 PM EST Saturday works for me!!

I like the idea of keeping the goodies going to Bobby, too. I'd like to go ahead and jump in and take my turn before I'm off to Southeast Asia next Thurday (July 20).

So, if it's ok, I will plan to call an order in this coming Monday and sign it "Love from the Barbaromaniacs at Tim Woolley's Racing Site" - or something like that.

Please advise if this suits everyone?

Alex,
Just saw your post about the vigil @7pm Sat. Also, I will commit to sending something next week;was planning to anyway. Already sent goodies to Dr R & NBC staff the other day. Is there a sign up sheet/place for us to coordinate? If not, I plan to call Kennett Florist and let them suggest when to send it so there is a steady stream of goodies and attention flowing to Barbaro. Can't thank you enough (and the rest of Fair Hill support team) for this website.

4 p.m. tomorrow - got it!

This may sound crazy but I know it won't for most of you here. :) In yesterday's mail I received a thank you post card from UPenn for the donation to the Barbaro fund. It has a beautiful picture of Barbaro on the front. I showed my two dogs this beautiful picture (of course they had to sniff and lick it) and I asked them to pray an animal prayer for Barbaro. They looked at me like they knew what I was talking about. I am going to place the postcard in my bible and pray my heart out for Barbaro tomorrow at 4 p.m. - well, actually I've been praying for Barbaro all the time, it will feel so special knowing all of us will be praying together.

One observation about the brutality of racing. If there wasn't thorobred racing, Barbaro probably would not exist at all. There would have been no reason to breed his Mom and Dad to create Barbaro. And none of us would have had to joy of watching this magnificant animal.

Catastrophic injuries happens to all horses, racing or not. Remember Nureyev was injured in his paddock. Secretarait developed laminatitis long after he finished his racing career.Quarter horses, arabians, morgans, saddlebreds, warm bloods, etc. They are all subject to these injuries. They don't have to race to break a leg or get laminitis.

Posted by: JB at July 14, 2006 7:19 PM

I'm sure that Edgar was as scared as we were - he had to go and see for himself. Thank God Bobby was "much better" I'm sure seeing Edgar is helping him feel more better!!! Edgar is a great guy - and to go out of his way to visit when he has other committments shows what a big heart he has. I wish I could go see Bobby - but Kennett Square is a bit of a drive from Key West. And even if I got there I wouldn't be allowed in - perhaps a disguise...................

I love all of you people that participate in the postings and who provide us with info (Alex and Jeanne - thats you). Thanks for being there for me during this trying time.

XXOO to all of you!!

Hi VBB's

Count me in on the prayers...heck I even said some while I was being married...( Catholic ceremony, so yes I had some time to spare )ha ha.

I was kneeling at the altar and staring up at the murals and all I could hear was the priest saying 'blah blah blah" like how Charlie Browns teacher sounded in the cartoon.
It's true! I DID!

I had my own duty that day, and I took communion in thanks of my many blessings and for Barbaro too.

My husband asks me about Barbaro, he likes animals and he was even asking me about Laminitis last night, he is trying to be supportive, but let's face it, we all come here because we know people here will, Understand.

And I thank god for that everyday!

Hope your having a splendid day big guy!

Love you lots!

Barbaro, sweet Barbaro. Dr. R said while your condition is stable , it remains extremely serious. We are so glad you were able to rest, your spirit is terrific and you seem comfortable. Very, very important. I love your spirit and everything else I've heard about you and witnessed in your beautiful pictures.

You have a tough battle ahead of you but you have the best people on your team, who have become part of your family. The NB staff have fallen in love with you, along with the rest of the world.

We ***all*** need to focus tomorrow evening(if 7:00 is the time) on supporting our guy and focus on the re-growth of Barbaro's left hoof - ALL positive energy directed toward Barbaro, as this is as serious as it can get. Focus on the laminitis not moving to the other foot or the front of the left foot.

We are with you, Barbaro and with Dr. R, Jackson's, Matz's, Kathy, Peter and all the staff of NB. You guys are doing the best job, with our guy and we are with you and support you.

Still with a heavy heart (full Barbaro) but a eyes a bit drier..

P.S. Bobby, I hope you are enjoying the snacks you love so much and I know you're sharing them with your other horse horse friends.

1. We're going to all pause in our days tomorrow, Sat at 7pm EST in a moment of reflection/prayer/mediation for Barbaro.

2. We're going to send something to NB from Bobby's Internet Family next week:

Sarah - you take Monday so you have time to get ready for your trip. I'll take Tuesday, Karen you can take Wednesday and Chris Beyer Thursday.

Tracie..I was a BEATLEMANIC in my teen years. BARBAROMANIC just sounded fitting! LOL.

OK...yall figure out how to do this sign-up thingy for gift basket orders so there will be a basket a day. I just need to place my order before July 20th.

Would the florist place go nuts if we all called and placed an order and let them figure out which one to deliver each day? Or is that chaos?

Posted by: Sarah at July 14, 2006 7:23 PM

Sheila, You're so right in considering Alex regarding the "debate" about horseracing; he has been so good to us. I felt bad commenting on that article here, but I was so shocked by those statistics. But maybe, w/o jeopardizing Alex's livelihood, improvements can be made in track surfaces so as to greatly reduce these tragedies. As I mentioned in my comments, improvements don't usually come until people are enlightened. That article is sure an "eye-opener".

Thank you for selecting a time .. 7 pm eastern time is good for me and also my fiance .. who by the way is not Christian but a spiritualist. Even so, he was deeply moved by our vists to the Mother Cabrini Shrine .. as I have said, it is a place visited by many people both with beliefs and non-beliefs .. so, please do not feel uncomfortable about this issue .. I hope to not have offended anyone here. If so, I am deeply sorry.

Regarding the issue of horse racing, for the most part, it is due to Barbaro that our consciousness has been raised .. also about other horse issues. But, again, this is our time to come together and support our dear Bobby and his family.

I know they are really busy right now but I am hoping Alie will post later tonight or I can call her next week when they catch their breath.

I'm Rachel from Kennett Florist in Kennett Square. I've talked to several of you over the past couple of days. I think your spirit, love and prayers are working wonders!! Bobby IS going to win this race, he has an amazing spirit, which you can see when you look at his eyes.

I wanted to let those of you who have sent things to Bobby, the Jackson's and the staff at NBC, that they are so greatful and appreciative of EVERYTHING that is being sent. They are working so hard and I know truly appreciate all the support coming from all of you! Alie and I went up to NBC today to make some of the deliveries, and talked to a couple of the staff members... the coffee and snacks made them very happy! Thank you also for the wonderful comments, we're so glad that we can help in any way.

Keep all those good vibes comin' Bobby's way! We Believe!!!

There were 802 candles when I left a candle for Barbaro. I am with you for prayers on Saturday at 7 PM EST.'

I have another suggestion I posted yesterday & someone thought it was a good idea:

Does Alex, or one of you out there, know how we could request/suggest to the Jacksons to allow (if they're of a mind to want to do this)a minister/preacher/priest/spiritual advisor of their choosing, to pay a visit to Barbaro to give him a special blessing? (Provided, of course, that Dr. R. can allow that. We don't want a person unknown to Barbaro to get him excited or upset. I remember reading that when the Governor visited him he got pretty excited.)

What do you folks think?

{{{{Rachel and everyone at Kennett Square Florist}}}} Thanks for running your butts off for us and coming here with your wonderful updates.

I forgot to mention that anyone who cannot do the florist thing please make homemade goody bags, too. If some days two things arrive from this group then there is more positive energy!

I think that is a wonderful idea if the hosital and the Jackson's agree to it!!

Gotta sign off for a while - need to take my little guy to the doctor, but I'll be back as soon as we're finished. Chris, not a bad idea about letting the florist decide when to send our stuff based on the amount of deliveries they're getting. Since we assigned a day to each of us next week, why don't we stick with that and then beginning the week of the 24th, anyone who wants to pitch in can call Kennett Florist and pay in advance from the Internet Family with delivery date to be determined by them?

I know nothing much about Buddhism, but when I get to Thailand, I think there's a way to ask for blessings from the monks. I will try to put in a good word for Barbaro! We need all the help we can get!

Rachel, hello. Thank you for notifying us about the deliveries and that NB staff is enjoying the goodies. They need their day brightened and also they need to know how much it means to us that they are not only taking care of Barbaro, observing everything about him but watching over him 24/7! I'm sure the love they show him, helps maintain his spirits. Remember, Dr. R. mentioned that he is not in this alone; that NB staff (residents, nurses, barn staff and others) are all doing this together. They are included among the Barbaro's extended family, as I see it.

I think Barbaro got excited when the Governor visited 'cos he knows to watch out for politicians :O

The more I read these comments the more I know I am not the only one with a "hang Up" as my husband would say. He does not understand.
I have been in tears over a horse that has won my heart one I have never seen in person. I honestly have never been a horse fan or watched horse racing. But have been following Barbaro since I heard about his injury.
My husband used to say if I had to rescue my dogs or him he knows who would be saved first.
I can't help it! Now if he only new it would be Barbaro too! It is those eye's they just melt my heart. There is a horse in a pasture down the road ever since Barbaro I walk every night and bring her carrotts. Count me in on Sat night!
Our big boy should be feeling great after getting positive vibes from around the world.

I'll probably take some 'goodies' from the garden and such as my daughter and I plan to go to NBC this weekend. (hope that is ok and works out for everyone taking days, etc.,)

Also, found some comments of Edgar's that were made today and thought I'd pass them on. (We know Barbaro (Big B) is a fighter!!

Edgar Prado, the jockey credited with saving Barbaro by quickly pulling him up in the Preakness, was devastated by the grim prognosis.

"It's very upsetting," he said. "Barbaro has shown to everyone what a fighter he is. He showed it on the track and with all the surgeries he's had. It just goes to show what kind of courage he has. He's a true champion, and is fighting every step of the way.

"All we can do now is hope and pray. We'll need a miracle, but maybe it will happen."

Loretta - that is a wonderful idea. I'm sure that between the Jacksons and Dr Dean and staff they probably have someone that would be more than happy to give Barbaro a blessing. What a beautiful thought!!!

I also wanted to compliemnt Bernadette at Kennett Florist - I spoke with her this morning and she was so nice and helpful - I just said I wanted to send something to Barbaro and she giggled - I know it was probably the hundreth phone call she has gotten regarding this. I saw the post by Rachel - what a sweetie!! Thats Kennett Florist for being so helpful to us. There is not a florist in Key West I could call and ask for a horsie treat basket - they would have me committed!

Hang in there Barbaro - chin up!! I love you and prayer for you every chance I get - about 100 times a day!

I am participating tomorrow night - I'm looking forward to it.
