Barbaro Updates: 8

updates are now here.

Update 245: Kathy Anderson just visited (I called her as she was leaving at 5 pm). While Barbaro appeared a little irritated (I guess as one would from time-to-time when stall bound as Bobby is) he managed to devour a bag of fresh grass Kathy fed him. Kathy also noted that they changed the cast on his left hind and apparently all looked as it should. All his vital signs were good. He remains comfortable.

Michael Matz won the Virginia Oaks with Aunt Henny!

Update 244: Trying to catch up on much of the recent media coverage. Mike Schuh e-mailed us this video clip he reported on for WJZ 13 Eyewitness News yesterday (July 14). Barbaro Shows Improvement Day After Outlook Was Grave. (Its cool to have media contact you!) Its a nice piece I think (I am sure it was also commented on below). It includes footage of Bobby's use of his sling, it highlights the gifts that have been sent to NBC and also includes a short interview with Michael Matz. Well worth viewing!

Update 243: The following is a comment posted by Jen as a result of our afternoon activities (it was actually pretty cool watching a horse use an aqua treadmill)!

alex and I went to a very interesting open house this afternoon for Fair Hill Equine Therapy at Bruce Jackson's new barn (rebuilt since devestating fire late last year). We had the opportunity to chat with Chuck, one of the Fair Hill vets who works with Kathy Anderson. He was great about letting us pick his brain to better understand some of the issues related to Barbaro's condition. I wanted to share some of what I personally learned...most of all, in regards to the sling. I naively thought that whilst in the sling the horse was literally suspended and totally non-weight bearing. Not the case. In fact, he's still actually full-weight bearing in the sling. What it does is provides support so that should he want to lean on it (in whatever direction), he can rest himself off of whichever leg he wants. So, it still gives him a fair bit of control over his situation. Even so, it was a learning process for him to become comfortable with the concept (understandable!). But it seems as though he's come to appreciate it's benefits. Also, regarding the sling, as you can see from the photos it's positioned right in front of the stall door and that is because it's a part of the lift system that transports the horse from post-operative recovery back to the stall. Makes sense. Another bit I found interesting was that Barbaro has apparently been on Aspirin and Plavix (anti-platelet aggregation...ie. makes blood less likely to clot) since his injury as part of the effort to prevent laminitis (general risks of immobility)and he will continue on these medications to try to fascilitate blood flow to where it is so very needed for healing. Last bit, also related to laminitis prevention, initially, they fed Bobby on the ground to encourage weight bearing on the front legs. Now, they're feeding him more upright to try to provide protection for the front legs as they don't want him to favor them too much at this point. OK, that's it. I know I for one have absolute faith that our boy is in the very most capable hands and I thought it was cool to hear more about the details.

Update 242: Just spoke to Peter Brette. While he is unable to visit today (still in the barn) he noted that D.D (Michael's wife) visited earlier today and said Bobby remains comfortable (she visited about noon). No doubt Michael will visit later today, I think he had runners at Delaware Park. Kathy Anderson is also visiting today (likely as I type) so I will try to catch up with her in a little while.

Update 241: We have received a couple of calls about tonights vigil (CBS radio, New Bolton Center). The main questions were where and when ?

Where: whereever you are. If you can congregate with others in your area, great. If not, great! I am sure there will be a few congregating outside the main entrance of New Bolton (I may do the same).

When: 7 pm east coast time.

Update 240: New Bolton Center press release: Barbaro continues to be stable confirms what we learned from Michael this morning:

Chief of Surgery Dean Richardson reports today that Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro had a very good night and remains in stable condition at the George D. Widener Hospital. "His heart rate and pulse are normal, and his appetite is good," said Dr. Richardson. "He continues to respond well, looks good and has a positive attitude."

Barbaro is being treated at the hospital for fractures received at the Preakness on May 20 as well as laminitis in his left hind foot. "We continue to monitor him very closely, and we are keeping him as comfortable as possible," said Dr. Richardson.

Jeannine Edwards (ESPN) left the following comment:

ESPN's coverage will continue throughout the weekend. I will actually be at Delaware Park today (Sat) and tomorrow for our Delaware Handicap telecast on Sun, but another reporter is coming for the Barbaro watch. If the situation warrants, I'll be back at New Bolton on Mon. Let's hope for a positive update again today. Good luck with the vigil this evening... I'll be there in spirit.

Note, Jeannine left the comment before the positive update this morning! She further explained to me that ESPN will likely have coverage throughout the day, and Sports Center this evening. There will also be a piece on the Delaware Handicap broadcast tomorrow from Delaware Park (5pm ESPN2). Many have commented on the quality of ESPNs coverage (of course I agree). I think the fact that Jeannine was a racehorse trainer and exercise rider for many years helps with her objective coverage.

We had a visitor today, at Fair Hill. Jean, I hope you enjoyed your trip to Fair Hill, and NBC. I enjoyed the Maccaroons, and will wait a little while to enjoy the Sam Adams!

Update 239: Just spoke to Michael Matz and Barbaro had another comfortable night last night (friday night). Dean Richardson called Michael. Michael said he was up and down 2 - 3 times, again showing that he is OK using himself to move around. All vital signs are normal.

I also saw Kathy Anderson, who saw Bobby around 4pm yesterday (she tried to call me last night but apparently my phone was on the blink). She also said that when she saw him he looked the same (as her positive report yesterday). She also noted the pulse in his front feet was normal. She saw 35 baskets of goodies being delivered as she was leaving!
updated 7:15 am, saturday morning

Update 238: Added an update to the Fan Media page that links to Barbaro Livingston's work and Anna's lovely pastel.

A nice article in the Philly Inquirer: Barbaro said to be in good spirits, stable condition that notes the fan outpouring of late (lots of people here contributing no doubt) and Edgar's visit yesterday, excerpt:

The day's upbeat report was accompanied by an outpouring of sentiment from Barbaro's fan base. Numerous floral arrangements - one of roses in the shape of a horseshoe - and carrots and apples seemed to arrive at New Bolton on Friday by the minute. A woman brought in a single orchid and wondered about the latest news. Barbaro's trainer, Michael Matz, put a number of arrangements in the back of his car after an early evening visit.

Earlier in the day, Barbaro received a visit from another old friend. Barbaro's jockey, Edgar Prado, stopped by to see the horse early Friday morning before riding at Belmont Park later in the day. He left New York at 4:30 a.m., got down to the Kennett Square facility, then drove back to Long Island with his wife, who had visited the day before.

"He looked much better than I thought he would," Prado told a New York Post reporter at Belmont Park. "He is very smart, and he knew me right away. I fed him, walked with him, and he put his head on my shoulder and fell asleep."

Ed, thanks for getting the Prado interview!

As ever, Bobby and all of his caregivers are in my prayers this morning. I pray for another comfortable day for Barbaro and that both his legs heal more and more each day. Thanks Alex for all of your rime and effort keeping us updated. Jean

Alex, thanks for doing such a terrific job. J.

Woke with a prayer that Barbaro has had a peaceful night full of recovery and comfort. Blessings be unto all that are taking care of and cares for Bobby. Blessings for Barbaro most of all. Y'all are in our thoughts and prayers here at the Gates of Eden farms.

Thank you once again for the excellent coverage. Am anxiously awaiting an update for today (Saturday). This is the first place I visit each day when logging on!

It is so amazing to read the love between Edgar and Bobby, that would have made some picture with Bobby sleeping on his shoulder! That love (and from all of us) is what is making Bobby strong through all of this! :)

Beautiful Barbaro: Just read that you had a good night, may you have a better one tonight. Relax, let those bones and that hoof heal, one day at a time, honey, one day at a time...Love

Good morning all. Anxious to hear more good news this am about Bobby sleeping comfortably.

Good morning. Hoping for another day of good news!

Here's this mornings Baltimore Sun article. Most of it we know, but it does confirm that they are reading the suggestions that have been mentioned here. And it appears Barbaro favors carrots.

Will be there at 7pm tonight, too.

Dear Bobby,

You really did have an angel on your shoulder for the Preakness. Not many horses have a jockey so skilled, but obviously so caring. He really loves you so much. I guess you got to rest on his shoulder for a change! Good boy!!! We will be jingling and praying for you all day, always, but especially tonight.

Love,
Jessica, Seamus, & Malcolm
Lorenzo & Nigel (OTTBs)

Edgar Prado surely is the man. What a caring person. Not every jock would have that heartfelt connection.

Thank goodness Bobby's doing better today. I'll jingling my curb chains like mad at seven tonight.

PS - Is the vigil in a particular place? Or everyone is participating from their place?

Dear Barbaro & Tim--

The first thing I do every morning is check this sit. Thank, Tim, for gathering and reporting all the info. You are truly kind to do this.

And Barbaro...I had dreams about you: you could "talk" and were well aware of all the love. In my dream, you conveyed that the feelings are mutual and that you had a tremendous will to live. I awoke this morning at 6:59, just in time to join in the mass prayer vigil. I hope the miracle comes that will help your tremendous spirit. You are doing EVERYTHING to help your medical team and you all need that extra "spark".

I found a song that I want to dedicate to Barbaro: Alive & Kicking, by Simple Minds. Hold on, Barbaro. Don't give up--your doctors won't if you won't.

Posted by: Pam Coblyn at July 15, 2006 1:07 PM

Oh, THANK YOU GOD! Hopefully each day that we get a report like the last two will be taking a step away from danger for Barbaro. Am so looking forward to the vigil tonight. I cried when I read about Edgar Prado's visit-what a magnificent person, both professionally in saving Barbaro's life, and personally. Someone at the center HAD to have taken a picture of Barbaro asleep on Edgar's shoulder - any chance we could get that posted? That would be PRICELESS!
Everyone, we need to keep praying, channeling energies, whatever you refer to it as..he was doing so well there I think we kind of slacked off. And as this past week has shown, we can't let our prayers/thoughts/energies start to slide.
We'll all be "together" at 7 p.m. tonight.

Thank you, Alex - you are an absolute GOD-SENT.

She also noted the pulse in his "front" feet was normal. Dr. Anderson said.
We know what she is looking for!
We need to pray for all four legs.
Hope they have him in the sling, keeping the waight off his legs.
Thanks for the update. Praying hard in Lower Alabama

Good morning Bobby, I checked on you late last night and ran to the computer this morning (as I do every day.) It was so wonderful to read that you had another restful night. I will be here tonight at 7 to focus on you. I will light a candle and rally my dogs around as well so we can all pray for you and send every good thought your way. They are pulling for you too, we talk about you every day! Stay strong beautiful boy.

Hi Loretta, Here is some very interesting information on the Kentucky Derby and traditional Garland of Roses.

http://www.kentuckyderby.com/2006/derby_experience/garland_of_roses.html

Love you Barbaro!

Posted by: Lisa Morin at July 15, 2006 1:28 PM

God is perfectly able to hear multiple prayers. I will continue to not only pray for Barbaro, but for the estimated 2 horses that will die on the track each day and for the numerous others that will be seriously injured. Barbaro is fortunate in that he is receiving the best possible care and his connections are financially able to support him. Too many others are not quite so fortunate. I will also pray that by the time this years foal crop gets to the track, deaths and injuries will be uncommon, not the norm.

Alex, I will also pray for the horses in your care.

Positive thoughts on Bobby:
1. He can get up and down 'without' pain;
2. Pulse in front feet normal
3. No fever, which means no infection
4. He continues to eat
5. ALL vital signs are normal.
6. His condition is stable

That says alot for all he's been through in the last ten days!

Posted by: Janet at July 15, 2006 1:32 PM

Thank you, dear God, in heaven! I can't help but think that our prayers affected this sudden positive change in Barbaro. What happened between Thursday and Friday is a miracle in itself. PLEASE KEEP THE PRAYERS COMING. We can have a complete miracle here.

Sweet Barbaro, precious boy, stay as strong and determined as you have been. Your will and desire to live are awe-inspiring. This one magnificent creature has brought millions over the world together! We will continuously pray for you and for all those providing you with such incredible care and love...please all, pray real, REAL hard at the vigil tonight. And continue in the days, weeks and months ahead.

Thank you, Alex! I feel honored!
After reading about the sling, I'm glad he's got it to lean on a bit when he needs to- sounds like it really helps take the pressure off.

As it is every morning, it's so nice to turn on the computer and see, "Talked to Michael Matz" or "Talked to Peter Brette this morning".

Good Morning Alex and Family,

Special One, I see the Creator has given you another restful night. Caring spirits, many that you don't even know, will gather tonight to send you some special healing energy. Rest, beautiful baby, and let it bring you back to the way the Creator intended you to be, whole in body, strong in spirit, and light in heart. You've already got the spirit and heart conquered so let's work on the body.

As usual, Alex you knew that we would be up with the roosters waiting for news. Notice that Jeannine also left an early post. What a lovely person she is. You both take excellent care of our minds and spirits. Don't think we don't know it and hold you in a special place.

In answer to an earlier post, I think we decided that each of us would "find a quiet, personal place" and think on our boy from there. Don't think it really matters physically where you are. It's more about opening your mind to the spiritual part of your being and focusing on Bobby. Many are including their four-legged friends in the vigil. Animals are pure in spirit therefore have a very strong connection with the Creator.

I'm sure you awoke early Mr.B knowing that the treat baskets were waiting. Don't suppose you miss much that goes on around there. Bet you can smell those carrots. Do you like pears perhaps? Tell us through your caregivers what you want. Please share your treats with the other four-legged creatures that are in the ICU with you. Perhaps a pretty mare might enjoy a treat from your basket.

Everyone, enjoy this new day and all its possibilities for good things.

LOL, Jill

Just say the (probably replay) of Barbaro on ESPN (sports news - channel 102 on your cable box - 24 hour sports news) with Jeannine (sp). Good article.

Here is a link from the washington post that was probably much the same (Thank you Alex again! for the constant updates.)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/14/AR2006071400430.html

A day after describing Barbaro's prognosis for recovery as ``poor'' because of an often fatal hoof disease, the colt's chief surgeon said Friday that the Kentucky Derby winner had a ``good night and even slept on his side.''

That nugget of good news followed a week of distressful updates: surgeries and cast changes on Barbaro's injured right hind leg -- the one that sustained three broken bones in a horrific misstep shortly after he left the gate at the Preakness Stakes on May 20. And, perhaps most serious of all, a severe case of dreaded laminitis in his ``good'' left hind leg.

Barbaro was in stable condition after a restful night and a peaceful day, with his heart rate and pulse termed ``good,'' according to statements issued by the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center

Bobby,
Good morning Brave Heart! Another good night! We are all with you, as usual.
While I have thanked everyone over and over, I'd like to thank Tim for this site. Also, while I know everyone is reading articles on racing and injuries, please read up on the exciting news about the Polytracks being installed around the country and the DRAMATIC reduction in injuries. It's very, very encouraging to read at one track injuries have gone down over 90% in the short time they have had the track installed. Very encouraging news for ALL horses, their owners and trainers and fans.
Bobby, saw your baskets being brought in late last night, they looked delicious, enjoy them, sweet one. And as Skyler said, 7 p.m.
Good Morning Family,

Susan
PS. Isn't it amazing, to come here? You can actually feel the love and unity, something I have never seen before. You all are wonderful.

Thank you so much for your cite - I too begin and end my day every day here. Watched the video and he seemed to have a good appetite, really chomped down those carrots. Good to see him bear weight on his back legs. I pray for Bobby every day, I don't want him to suffer at all, he deserves better then that considering how brave his is. He seems to be such a fighter. He is one in a million, a super horse and he has been through so much. I thought is was so sweet that he fell asleep on Edgar's shoulder! I wish I could reach out and do something to comfort him! You keep up your spirits and your fight for life, Bobby. There are so many people out here praying that you win your battle, just like you won all your races. America loves you!

Bobby, so glad you had a comfortable night.Stay strong sweet boy.

Alex,

Do you know what is being done to attempt to prevent laminitis in Barbaro's fore hooves (other than using the sling)?

Once again, this little boy of ours continues to amaze me. (shaking my head in awe..again). What a fighter, a true champion with a will to live bigger than the heavens. It's the greatest news to start a beautiful day of prayer and thanks for all the blessings bestowed upon all of us. We, like Barbaro, are a mighty force, aren't we? Good Morning to you, Bobby, and Good Morning to all who love and care for all animals. Have a great day, all, and I will be with all of you, and Bobby, in spirit tonite at 7:00pm. Blessings to you all.

Good Morning Barbaro!!!

I am so glad to see that you had another restful night!! My prayers are still there for you and always will be. I find myself on my day off coming straight to Tim's website to see how you are. I know that our prayers and your strength and natural spirit will see you thru these rough days.

To everyone on this site, I have been reading here for along time now and I am in AWE of the spirit that has formed here. Barbaro has pulled together so many people in a world that has gotten tough to pull together. I truthfully believe he was given to us for a reason. When I look at his eyes it is like I know him. Does anyone else fill this way?

Well I guess I need to go fix my kids breakfast.

Thank you Alex reading your updates are like having my coffee!! You are the greatest!!

Till Later Barbaro, I love you!!

PS, The kids and I are going to light candles for you and we will be with the you tonight at the vigil!!

I've been wondering about this since the press conference. Does anyone have any insights into the progress of Barbaro's fracture? We've been so terribly sidetracked. We all know that additional pins and a bone graft were placed last weekend.. Dr. Dean I think mentioned that it was looking good, but that was through the cast, so he didn't have a really clear assessment at that point.. I just am concerned about the time frame on the fracture, and I think we should expect progress, but then, what's next? I would guess additional lighter casts, maybe a brace, but that's only speculation.. It is two months, tomorrow...what a long haul for our brave Bobby..

Thank you Alex and to all.

Pray to good St. Jude for continued and complete healing.

Alex, is there any way to find out how many hours of actual sleep he gets as I know they monitor this at NBC? It is going to be sweltering in Pgh,PA over the next week.I don't mind as long as bobby is "comfortable".Mary, yes..."and make us your agents of healing in a broken world." Alex could you post The Sick Animals Prayer for reference, please? I am so glad of normal pulse in the front hooves. We must pray for the protection of the hooves. I bet the horseshoe of roses is absolutely beautiful and Kennett Florist put their love and good thoughts on every rose they put in.Stay strong Bobby and team. I hope Mike Rea had a comfortable night, too.

Dear Friends:

I got up at 6:00 am today and the first thing I did is to turn on the computer-- person hygiene and nature calls be damned.

I take strength from this website as it sets the tone for my entire day. And today's update--the word from Moses (Dr. Richardson)--is good.

But I must also tell the BIG FELLA that I am very, very jealous. Nobody has ever told me to keep eating and resting! Maybe because I have perfected the art--better than the pandas in the National Zoo in Wasington, DC.

I will be thinking deep positive thoughts at 7:00 p.m. this evening.

I envy those who are able to assemble at New Bolton Centre today. Please, if some one has the time and energy, please sign my name to a poster or a sign.

Have fun and have faith! Do everything I wouldn't
do--after all, you can all plead the 5th!

Good Morning Bobby and Good morning to all of you gentle spirits that gather here.
THis morning I can only see the picture in my mind of Edgar RUSHING to Bobby's side thinking that this may be his last visit. Driving many miles in the wee morning hours with concern and sadness. What a joy it must have been for him to find Bobby "better than expected" And it appears as though Bobby knows when to lean on Edgar too, as he has trusted him all along to help him through.
"Eddy ...I'm kinda tired..can I lean on you for a while buddy?" "Of course my friend"

You cant help but romantisize these things, because they are actually happening and they are true!!! This is incredible!! We honestly dont know what the next chapter of this story will be, but man......I know that we can all picture the triumpant happy ending here so, just keep envisioning that big swell of music and the credits rolling over Bobby standing tall and proud in a pasture at sunset.

David, I love the idea of a vigil with an entire herd of horses. Wish I could see it. Perhaps you could photograph it and post it later?

Someone else posted a very lovely prayer including all the other poor horses who have been hurt. Very eloquent. I join in in your hopes that death and injury can be stopped or at least, greatly reduced.

It sounds like a lot of us will be keeping vigil with our animals tonight, and I plan to as well. Every morning, as I leave for work, I tell my kitties to keep thinking good thoughts for Bobby today !

Barbaro-much beloved one-my heart is so warmed to think of you surrounded by all those wonderful baskets of goodies sent by all your friends of "Barbaro's Virtual Village' aka Barbaromaniacs!
You must be in "hog heaven", excuse me if that offends thee.

Oh yeah, Lil Buddy (siamese who has two top fang teeth left, now that Dora knocked last bottom one out while giving meds) said that you need to stop whining and crying about a few little tail hairs that got pulled out!! He says at least tailhairs, unlike his teeth, WILL GROW BACK!!!! He said you still look pretty good for a banged up old bigheaded racehorse. He thinks he is much more handsome, cause HE has blue eyes, and all his tailhairs. LOL (his words not mine)

The vigil is on tonight, I will have a green candle and it smells like apples. This will make me think of Barbaro happy eating apples off a real tree in a pasture in the meadow somewhere, surrounded by butterflies and gorgeous mares.

Pam C.- Alive & Kicking is a totally appropriate song, it is great!!

David, from Gates of Eden Farm- You are one HELLA sexy cowboy MAN admitting this situation makes GROWN MEN feel like a little boy, helpless...You are a exception to the rule. You rock, dude.

Hi everybody,

I just spoke to Rachel (Kennett Florist) who told me that the medical team is aware of tonight's vigil. One of the delivery people spoke to Kathy Anderson this morning, who said they're all so very grateful for what the people on this board are doing. Our goodies are being delivered, and btw, Barbaro has enough grapes. LOL

Rachel also said she will mention to someone on the team that we'd appreciate it if someone is with Barbaro at 7 pm - 'hands on.' So I'm sure he'll be connected to us and the love and prayers when we start.

How wonderful that our boy is doing well this morning, huh? (Just read the updates, not the posts yet.)

I feel so fortunate to have found this site shortly after Barbaro's tragic accident. I view the site several times a day and have read every single post, but I have never posted. This site has the most caring and compassionate people on it! Every morning my 3 doggies and I head for the computer first thing. The last couple of weeks the tears begin shortly thereafter. It is so comforting to read such sweet and caring comments from everywhere! We all love Barbaro and I pray many times a day for his complete recovery.

There's no doubt that Barbaro is a "super horse",in the same class as my beloved Secretariat, and of course Man-O-War, but why wouldn't he be? Look at who he has been surrounded by during his life. So many first class, top notch people--The Jackson's, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, Edgar Prado, Eduardo, etc. They all love this horse dearly and it shows. Their love for this horse has brought out the best in him always, and it continues today! Thank you all for sharing your Barbaro with us.
He is now "OUR BARBARO" too.

Now, at this time, Barbaro is cared for by the most gifted veterinary orthopedic surgeon in the world. Everything I have read about him mentions the words genius, extremely talented, etc. It is obvious that he loves Barbaro, and that has to help with Barbaro's healing.

My heart goes out to Dr. Richardson because he has to feel like he's "under a microscope." In his practice he's probably done thousands of surgeries, but not always had to hold a press conference about it! I pray for him often as I can tell many of you do.

I will certainly be on board for the vigil at 7:00 p.m.est. Saturday down here in Texas.

I think the comment that we all need to hang onto right now, is the one made by Gretchen Jackson to "keep the faith." She has such grace.

Thank you Alex. I would have gone crazy by now if I didn't have your updates. I know this has become another full time job for you. You're the best.

Love to all the kind people on this site--

Sorry this is so long! I should have posted sooner with shorter messages. Ha!Ha!

Cheryl,
It may be a simple strain, but it may be plantar fasciitis. The pain is usually most prominent in the heel, but it can be felt along the whole bottom of the foot. It can cause swelling and pain from the ball of your foot to your heel. Check it out on Web MD. They have a nice section describing it. Treatment includes ice, ibuprofen, rest, and supportive insoles for your shoes. I hope you feel better soon! V

We're going to pass along to the staff at NBC about the vigil tonight, when we head up there today.

Mike C,

yeah...snail mail or maybe someone at this site can help you out. Or the Kennett Florist People?? they seem to have great access to NBC. Or maybe make a donation to the Fund and send your request to post the words???
But at any rate, its very inspiring and extremly relavant to the way Bobby handles adversity.
Go for it man.

I haven't seen any reactions or response to my suggestion that we continue the vigils on some sort of regular basis. I think it would be a good idea to continue.

Two friends of mine are Reiki masters. One belongs to an online healing circle, and Barbaro has been a recipient of their healing many times.

Another sends Reiki on her own everyday.

I visualize healing white light surrounding Barbaro and his human network everyday.

So glad to hear the upbeat attitude among the bloggers.

That ray of hope is still there that he is responding to treatment....let's hope that is the case! In any event, I will be observing 7pm tonight to funnel positive energy and prayers in Bobby's direction!

Hi, gang. A little more relaxed today, aren't we! Alex's latest update, posted at 7:15 am ET, another sweet relief. Thanks, Alex, for the early and upbeat report and thanks to Tim for providing this forum. Wonderful to hear that Bobby is as comfortable as yesterday, and laid down [AND GOT UP AGAIN] during the night, and ESPECIALLY that the pulse in his front feet is good.

Edgar Prado is in a class by himself. I was so touched by the reports of yesterday's visit. (Did you notice that some of the articles on Edgar Prado mentioned that HIS WIFE had visited B on occasions when he did not.)

I'll be with you all in spirit at 7 pm eastern time (6 pm Indiana [central] time), this evening (Saturday, 7/15) with my cat-kids; sending positive energy on behalf of Barbaro, and lighting virtual candles at

http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=barba

I won't be able to be with my horse at that time, because the barn where I board closes at 5 pm on weekends (I know, I know, but everything ELSE is so wonderful there, I can put up with it. We have daily turnout from 6 am to at least 3 pm, and they dispense supplements/meds twice a day.)

It's impossible to verbalize my continuing state of gratefulness for the the unwavering commitment and dedication of the Jacksons, Michael Matz and family, Peter Brette and family, Dr. Dean "the healing machine" [who started that one? I love it!], Edgar Prado and family, and all the staff at New Bolton, cannot be overstated. And don't forget Bobby's Fair Hill connections, Dr. Kathy Anderson, his Fair Hill vet, and Eduardo (can't remember last name), his groom.

Peace. Love. Hope. CJ the crazy cat lady (Blackie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond, IN

Dear Autumn

I was so touched at your imagining a foal of Ruffian and Barbaro. I feel in love with Ruffian only a few years ago and for me, writing is praying. For over a year, she was with me as I wrote her back to life, The Licorice Daughter, my love that got me through a hard time and now lives again in a book

When I came back, having taped the Preakness, to the news of Barbaro, all I could think of was Ruffian. And since, Barbaro has been my prayer, wherever I am writing, where ever I am. I pray he really will be free in the wind and apples as I imagine, on paper, Ruffian running free with her own beautiful babies

Thank God for another good night you had.

First thing I do is turn on to ESPN to get the latest updates or come on this wonderful site with all these lovely people who love you and adore you so much. May God continue to heal you and watch over you every day. Give thanks and praise to our Lord in heaven. He doesn't forget about his furry friends.

Here is an article from the Baltimore Sun posted at 10:41 am est. entitled "Barbaro has another good night
Horse still faces an uphill battle " which is about what we know so far, if a duplicate sorry...

Barbaro had another "very good night" and remained in stable condition Saturday, a second day of positive news for the Kentucky Derby winner being treated for an often fatal condition in his left hind leg.

"His heart rate and pulse are normal, and his appetite is good," Dr. Dean Richardson said in a statement issued by the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

"He continues to respond well, looks good and has a positive attitude."

Barbaro, who shattered his right hind leg a few yards out of the starting gate in the Preakness on May 20, has a severe case of laminitis in his "good" left hind leg and his chances of survival were called "poor" by Richardson on Thursday.

"We continue to monitor him very closely, and we are keeping him as comfortable as possible," Richardson said.

On Friday, Barbaro was given a walk in the intensive care unit by Richardson, and jockey Edgar Prado said the colt "looked much better than I thought he would" following a 2 1/2-hour visit.

Another good night, many more to come! Good going, Bobby....I know you've known how to do this all along.

Mike C--great post on the race commentary.

Anna, I couldn't agree with you more about how many different schools of thought, philosophies, religions are represented on this board--and all working toward the same goal. For those of you who know of Joseph Campbell and his work, what we have here is a perfect illustration of what he professed--that is, there is an underlying universal truth that all conscious people are trying to get to. They use many different means, as in beliefs and religions, to get there--but they are all heading for the same place, just as all of us are with Barbaro.

So great to have our new hands-on connection with the NBC front desk and staff through Alie and Rachel at Kennett Florists. Thanks you two--and to everyone at KF who are helping us asa well as Barbaro in so many ways. I read in one of the posts last night that you were going to put up a banner from all of us on this board--is that right? That would be so great!

OK--I'm off to write cards to Dr. R., the Jacksons, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, Bobby..and maybe a few more...anyone know where we can write to Edgar Prado?

I loved the quote from Dr. R. at the end of the latest Baltimore sun article:
"Good things take time," he said. "Bad things come in a hurry."

Amen, Dr. R.

TO BARBARO

With pride and joy
Flying wingless
Unconquerable
Roses on your neck

A new, more perilous race
Your spirit, determination and trust
Allied with skill, loving kindness and compassion
Against the frailties of flesh and bone and hoof
Against despair
Against death
May victory again be yours

Mike C.--thank you for Edgar's contact information. Everything I've read about Edgar has always pointed out that he is one of the jockeys who truly cares about the horses. Thank god Edgar was riding Barbaro when he had his accident. Edgar Prado is the reason Barbaro was able to be given a chance at all.

Anna--the pastel of Barbaro is so beautiful. Did you send it to New Bolton?

What good news about Barbaro today. Our prayers have been heard! Keep praying. I think it is a great idea for us all to pray at 7:00 p.m est. EVERYDAY until Bobby walks out of New Bolton.

Cheryl

Yes, ice your foot, put it up, take some OTC anti-inflammatories, wear good support shoes, do not go barefoot even at home.

Don't want you to end up like Bobby!

No, it is not laminitis :) but maybe plantar's fasciitis; hope it is a mild case!

Keep stretched out in the future. My favorite: with one hand, pull your toes up. With the other -- feel the band of muscle fibers running up and down on the bottom of your foot? Use your free hand to massage the muscle, about 10 times. Or roll your foot over a water bottle -- frozen, if you want, or not.

Everyone should keep these muscles stretched out to avoid tearing them -- particularly people at opposite ends of the bell curve: flat feet or very high arches. Both are at risk.

Good luck -- M. in CA

Hi all, this is my first post but I have been reading all along. I'll be lighting a candle here in Rancho Cucamonga, CA at 4pm, and visualizing healing light orbiting around Barbaro. I also asked my grandfather (who knew a little something about beating the odds...polio at age 20, they said he would never have kids, a job. well, he had 2 daughters, opened a travel agency and travelled around he world by himself in a wheelchair 8 times. In 1984/5 he developed post polio symdome and the doctors said that he would not make it. After 9 mos in ICU, he did, and lived until 2004...) to have a chat with St. Francis and the Holy Mother and point them Barbaro's way...

Most recent update from New Bolton - 10.06 am CT.

Barbaro continues to be stable

July 15, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA ? Chief of Surgery Dean Richardson reports today that Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro had a very good night and remains in stable condition at the George D. Widener Hospital. ?His heart rate and pulse are normal, and his appetite is good,? said Dr. Richardson. ?He continues to respond well, looks good and has a positive attitude.?

Barbaro is being treated at the hospital for fractures received at the Preakness on May 20 as well as laminitis in his left hind foot. ?We continue to monitor him very closely, and we are keeping him as comfortable as possible,? said Dr. Richardson.

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the George D. Widener Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania?s New Bolton Center.

This message board has been a blessing to me since I found it about a week ago. Tim and Alex, you guys are the best for allowing us to gather here and pull together for Bobby. :)

Regarding Edgar...I read that the first instinct of a jockey is to immmeidately jump off the horse as they are in great danger when a horse breaks down. And that Edgar put his health/life at great risk to prevent Barbaro from doing even more damage.

My Precious Barbaro and my Barbaro Family:>) So glad to hear that our Barbaro had another good night....I would like to share some thoughts with you as I was praying for Barbaro's healing.

So many people from all walks of life are coming together because of this magnificent horse called "BARBARO"..Many that have given up, for whatever reason, are now thinking positive; non-believers are believing; non-prayers are praying and animal lovers everywhere will be fighting for our furry ones with greater strength.
The first thing that attracted me to Barbaro is his eyes. Some people see the eyes of an "Old Soul". I don't know anything about horses and I have never even been on one. I have a picture of Our Lord Jesus called "The Listener" that I pray to constantly. I realized this morning that the same look I see in Barbaro's eyes is the same look I see in my picture of Jesus. A look that brings calm, peace, strength, and comfort.
I've been picturing this in my mind: At the Preakness when Babaro had his injury, it was like comparing Edgar to John the Baptist. He was able to bring Barbaro up and telling the world---Here is your comforter, brought to bring many, many people together thru prayer and belief in My Father.
The prince of darkness knew what was coming and tried to put an end to it by #1, the breakdown at the Preakness. Barbaro did not give up even though he had "catastrophic injuries" to his hind leg. Our Heavenly Father intervened. Then came #2: the infection that had occured on his injured leg that resulted in Barbaro's surgery again to "replace the hardware". Then #3: The dreaded "Laminitis". This brought more people together in prayer for Barbaro. A magnificent creation of Our Heavenly Father that had us praying more than ever for this beautiful Barbaro.
It seems to me that the prince of darkness threw 3 bad circumstances at our Barbaro to bring him down--but Barbaro prevailed. Because of his spirit, strenght, determination to live. Our Father has been with Barbaro from day he was born. I believe that Barbaro was brought to us for a reason--to BELIEVE IN PRAYER AND MIRACLES and to show us that Our Father still cares for us not matter what the circumstance.
Like in baseball, after 3 strikes your OUT. The prince of darkness "STRUCK OUT"...Now our Barbaro is running the bases: The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost---Then "Home Plate"...We are Barbaro's fans, looking down from the stands and cheering our boy on.
I see his connections: Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, Dr. Richardson, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, the staff at NBC, etc. as his "Disciples" taking care of guarding him to safety.

"As the Father loved me, so I have I loved you: Continue ye in my love"----John 15:9

Love and Peace to Barbaro and my Barbaro Team.

I think the Philly Inquirer put it well: the best we can hope for is a string of good days and nights, where he is comfortable, eating, and everything is stable. If we can have an uninterrupted string of that kind of news for days, then weeks, then months, it will give him time to heal. That's what I'm praying for. More of the same. A slow but steady upward trajectory.

I have a visual of all of us tonight, united in our love for Bobby, focused only on Bobby's Highest Good, standing with our arms open up to the sky and letting God's healing energy flow through us to Bobby. In neutral, not forcing or "sending" anything, just letting the love flow. Loving beings, letting God use us as His vessel for Bobby's Highest Good. Then, watch for healing miracles - in ourselves and in Bobby!

Thanks to ALEX again. I check this site first thing when I get up, when I come in from walking the dog, before I go to work, when I get home from work...
You get the idea.

People at work last night were talking about them putting Big B down yesterday, but I knew I had the most up-to-date information (because of this site),informed them of what was happening, AND, most importantly, was not at all sent into a spinning freak-out of emotion.

Where do I find a place to deliver carrots? I have sent apples and cards so far this week, but can;t find someone to send carrots. Suggestions please.

Thanks for Edgar's address. I've been looking for it. Can we reach the Jacksons?

Hi everyone,

If anyone is interested in making signs for the fence at NBC, but are you're too far away to post them yourselves, let me know. I'll be heading down to Delaware (about 15 min. away from NBC) in a couple of weeks, and would be more than happy to put them up for you. Email me if you'd like an address to send them to: mikellyt@aol.com (Nancy in CA--just sent you an email) If need be, I could probably convince my parents (who live in DE) to post the signs sooner.

Looking forward to being with all of you (who by the way have restored my faith in humankind) in spirit tonight...

Hi sweet Barbaro--

You are the last thing I think about before I go to sleep, and the first thing on my mind when I wake up. When I look at your beautiful face, I am overcome with emotion. You are more precious than words can adequately express. I am overjoyed at the news that you had another comfortable night. We are praying fervently for you - for rapid hoof growth, for rapid healing of that pastern bone, and for any and all infections to stay away! Have another restful day spent healing and happily munching all the goodies that have been sent to you from people who love you oh so much! Keep the faith Barbaro -we're with you all the way! Sarah, I'm sure the co-patients at NBC get treats as warranted by their conditions and dietary needs. I recall when Bobby was first hospitalized, there was mention of his gift baskets being so numerous that treats were passed around to other patients and staff too, so they wouldn't go bad. I'm sure that's the case now, too. I know there was a little gazelle in there with Bobby on whom Dr. R. operated--he said the gazelle had even more hardware in its leg than Bobby! There have been other horses there, too, and possibly a cow or two. I'm sure they are all sharing in the treats---Bobby and the NBC staff are very giving!

Posted by: Susan E. at July 15, 2006 4:35 PM

Barbara - Thanks for that information. I knew this is a perilous, long-term recovery thing, but I was hoping that for each comfortable day Bobby has, that means the pain is a bit less. I'm just having a hard time understanding this whole laminitis thing.

I already told my husband that I am sneaking away from a bbque early to take our pooch to a place affectionately known as dog beach here in Somers Point NJ at 7pm. I know you will feel all the love, wellness & courage we will be sending your way.

xoxo

"...and it's all Barbaro" (from the Derby) and it still is! I'm convinced he's winning this race too.

Let's all have a wonderful day today. No tears--o.k. maybe some happy ones.

"brick by brick..." (Red Pollard)

Love to all who love Barbaro

HERES "THE CALL AS SENT TO NBC..............................................2 DAYS DOWN..More to come..thatta? boy, fight you CHAMPION FIGHT???????.. Here is Tom Durkin calling BARBAROS? most important race??.. ?And the last to load is BARBARO?KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER?.UNDEFEATED,WINNER ON GRASS,SLOP.AND FAST TRACKS..MR BARBARO MAY JUST HAVE A DATE IN SARATOGA AT THE HALL IN HIS FUTURE??..
?And they?re off?..?And BARBARO stumbles BADLY out of the gate, Edgar Prado was lucky to stay aboard, he did a good job there, Barbaro will have a hard time getting back into this race??.So as they head into the clubhouse turn Barbaro seems OK and settling back into stride..Then as they head into the turn something is wrong with BARBARO?HE BOLTS ..HE?S SPOOKED?Durkin says,?WOW, whats with BARBARO today, he?s bolted on the turn, that?s 2 very costly tragic happenings to BARBARO in this race, looks like BARBAROS? done today?. BUT, BARBARO being a TRUE CHAMPION once again gathers himself up and carries himself, but all looks hopeless as he?s 25 lengths out of it, it looks very bad today . So Durkin continues to call the race as the field heads down the backstretch to the far turn. Then suddenly something catches Durkins? eye?.ITS BARBARO?..HE?S BARBARO ONCE AGAIN??Ladies and Gentlemen your not going to BELIEVE this but HERE COMES BARBARO-----AGAIN?!!!!!??. ?HE?S NOT DONE,HE?S PICKING UP HORSES AT THE BACK OF THE PACK AND REALLY FLYING?!!!?.?If anyone can overcome these odds it?s BARBARO? Durkin says, and the way he?s moving HE JUST MAY DO IT!!!!!!!.? OUR boy won?t quit, never quit?there will be more of this race to COME?. C?MON BARBARO?ONE LAST TIME,HIT THAT LINE FIRST , just like you did that day on your graduation last October and just like you did at you coronation that first Saturday in May?Secure that spot reserved for you by the racing Gods at the SPA??GOD BLESS YOU BARBARO AND ALL THOSE HELPING YOU..

This is probably going to be a 'stupid' post, but this is the picture I am keeping in my mind to remain positive and hopeful (Keep in mind, I am a criminal defense lawyer):

TRIBUNAL OF MIRACLES
Pope John Paul II, presiding.

Appearances: Abraham Lincoln, Johnny Cochran and
and Clarence Darrow on behalf of
Barbaro and his earthly caregivers
and friends.

Other Appearances: Secretariat, Seattle Slew,
Nureyev and Ruffian

Exhibits Presented: Tim Woolleys website with
all attachments. Photographs of Barbaro posted on NBC website. Video of Kentucky Derby 2006.
Resume of Dr. Dean Richardson.

Having heard arguments of counsel, having considered all the testimony and evidence, the Tribunal FINDS that Barbaro shall be healed and live to advance the cause of hope and compassion in a world wrought with strife and anger. He shall promote the comfort and cause of all creatures, great and small, and bring together the knowledge of science and hope to better mankind.

MIRACLE GRANTED. SO ORDERED/JPII

let's hope that the joint continues to fuse, too. bobby will be more inclined to put weight on that leg as it heals, i would think. hopefully, they will get some radiographs of the right joint area soon, and we can know more. they probably already have, i know they are monitoring him as well and thoroughly as humanly possible.

GOODMORNING EVERYONE....GLAD TO HEAR OUR SWEET LOVING BOY HAD ANOTHER GOOD NIGHT !!!!!!

I don't know where to begin but I'm sure our heavenly FATHER will guide me so that I say the right words.....THIS IS THE REAL THING...NOT A HOAX....GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS HIS WONDERS TO PERFORM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I PRAY THAT THE APPROPRIATE PERSON WILL FINALLY RECIEVE THIS INFORMATION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALMOST 25yrs AGO MY BOYFRIEND DISCOVERED ....COLD LASER TECHNOLOGY with a veterinarian in ONTARIO.My friend wrote several medical papers which were published on the subject.Susequently he and Dr. McKibbon of Wheatly Farm were invited to present their findings and technology at the INTERNATIONAL LASER SURGERY and MEDICINE ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE in JERUSALEM....which they did !!!!! Needless to say it created quite a stir in the medical community !!!His technology is recognized and being used in CANADA...US...CHINA and AUSTRALIA.

I am not an expert on cold laser technology but my friend is....this is what he told me would be helpful to BOBBY....
It is light in the near infared spectrum ....it is low energy(cold).....IT DOESN'T CUT OR BURN
IT WOULD INCREASE CIRCULATION...PROMOTES and SPEEDS HEALING
YOU CANNOT FEEL IT( OUR BOY WOULDN"T FEEL IT)...I'VE USED IT ON MY RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
IT CREATES CELL TO CELL COMMUNICATION
GETS RID OF INFLAMATION
THE BIGGY....GETS RID OF.....PAIN !!!!!

THESE ARE ALL VERY POSITIVE HEALING THINGS FOR OUR CHAMP

MY FRIEND and DR. McKIBBON TREATED SEVERAL HORSES....INCLUDING ONE NAMED RAMBLING WILLY??? NOT SURE IF I HAVE THAT NAME CORRECT??? IT WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL AND THE HORSE WENT ON RACING FOR MANY YEARS.

THE LASER probably does many more things...I AM JUST THE MESSENGER HERE...SO DON'T SHOOT ME!!!!

I HAVE BEEN PART OF YOUR INTERNET FAMILY FOR SOME TIME NOW....JUST SITTING HERE NOT KNOWING HOW TO TELL YOU ALL THIS BUT.....I LOVE OUR BOBBY SO MUCH.....I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT THIS IS AN OFFER STRICTLY OUT OF LOVE.....NO MONEY INVOLVED HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY BOYFRIEND IS SEMI-RETIRED NOW BUT HE STILL DOES WORK WITH HIS LASERS.....HE WORRIES ABOUT ME AND MY CANCER SCENARIO....TO MAKE A VERY LONG STORY SOMEWHAT SHORTER....

HE LOVES ME VERY MUCH....I LOVE BOBBY VERY MUCH..
HE IS PREPARED TO COME AND TREAT BOBBY WITH HIS LASER.......FOR NOTHING BUT A ROOF OVER HIS HEAD AND FOOD (OUR BOBBY'S FAVORITE TOO) A PIECE OF PIE WOULD PROBABLY DO IT!!!!!!

MY BOYFRIEND ALSO CO-AUTHORED...THE HORSE OWNERS HANDBOOK published by W.B.SAUNDERS PHILADELPHIA required reading for many veterinary schools...translated into SPANISH and GERMAN
ALSO.... CRYOANALGESIA for HORSES

HE IS A BRILLIANT MIND....HE ALSO HAS A LAW DEGREE!HE IS A SOFT SPOKEN QUIET GENTLE VERY KIND PERSON.......SOMETIME SOON...I WON'T BE SURPRISED IF HE DISCOVERS A CURE FOR CANCER...

THERE YOU HAVE THE WHOLE STORY ....DEAR INTERNET FAMILY
