Barbaro Updates: 30

updates are now here.

Update 357: Kennett Florist visited NBC today and had this to report (updates 29: 7:49pm):

Breakfast this morning, was a hit as usual! Fresh bagels and all the fixin's... They were still hot! Before they even announced it there were people waiting to dig in. I had the chance to meet a fellow Barbaromaniac, Kathy (who was so generous to supply breakfast for NBC today), as she was on her way to NBC to hang a sign. I hope she has a safe trip to IL the next couple of days. It was so nice to finally meet one of the people we've spent time talking with... You know, if anyone is planning a trip this way, we reccommend coming during the mushroom festival in September - one of Kennett Square's main events.

All is quiet this afternoon. I hid away a big basket of goodies for the 3rd shift and brought up some treats for Bobby. It's so wonderful to hear from Dr. Anderson that he still has that 'larger than life' personality! Thank you all again for all the love and support for Bobby and the NBC staff.

WE BELIEVE!!

Rachel at Kennett Florist

Vicky Jasch, who was interviewed for our Philadelphia Inquirer story had this to add about the interview (updates 29: 7:43pm):

It was a lot of fun answering Mike's questions for his article posted today. AS I said in the article, Barbaro blew me away the first time he ever set foot on the track, and I was his #1 fan before most people knew he existed. And I still am. I am so glad there are so many people rooting for him, and praying for him. But from the very start, I felt such a strong connection with him as I felt his mighty power that he exerted. He made my heart beat fast, as I knew from his first start, he was something so special. Something that we had not seen in over 2 decades. He is the first horse since the Bid in 1979 that I thought had a very good shot at the crown. Now, my prayer is only for his full recovery. He has made his mark in the history books, and in my heart forever.

Update 356: Must read AP interview: Barbaro's right hind healing well. its an interview today with Dr. Richardson. The following are excerpts:

"If he hadn't had the founder (laminitis) on his left hind, he'd probably be out of the cast and he'd probably be in a splinted bandage on the shoe," Richardson said in a telephone interview. "That's where we'd likely be. I can't do that because his left hind is the more sore of the two legs right now."

Barbaro's left hind hoof, which was stricken with a severe case of laminitis, is improving and started to show slight signs of re-growing after 80 percent of it was removed. Barbaro needs to regrow the hoof if he is to have any shot of walking - albeit with a hitch in his gait.

and

"It's too early to see true hoof wall forming," Richardson said from the New Bolton Center. "But the coronary band, the part of the hoof that's the equivalent of the nail bed where the hoof is going to grow down from, that looks very good. It's too early to see a lot."

and

Richardson said the colt's prognosis was "poor" after it was stricken with laminitis, but eased off that grim outlook Tuesday.

"I don't know. Everyday that goes by, it's great," he said. "He has so long to go I don't even think about the prognosis. We just work on the horse and hope he continues to be happy."

Update 355: New Bolton Center's Press Release: Barbaro's condition continues to remain stable:

Chief of Surgery Dean Richardson reports that Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro's condition continues to be stable. The colt's left hind foot, which has laminitis, is monitored closely for signs of infection. "We change his left hind foot bandage daily, and it looks good," said Dr. Richardson. "His right hind leg also looks good, and his appetite remains strong."

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania’s George D. Widener Hospital.

The next update will be posted on Thursday, August 3, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Congratulations to the Jackson's for a nice win at Goodwood: Lael Stables's undefeated Enticing wins Molecomb Stakes.

I am continuing to interview racing personalities, I have just got off the phone with Dan Hendricks, trainer of Brother Derek. I hope to have his interview posted tonight.

Thanks. I hesitated to post that link but I was so angry after reading it that I couldn't help myself.
That's on of the reasons this site is a God-send. We don't have to listen to rumors and mean spirited reporters. We just have to check in here for what's really going on.

GO BARBARO!!! You get better one day at a time. I always had faith in you - you have spirit and courage and that is what it takes to hang in there and meet any and all obstacles that come your way.

I was never a follower of horses or horse racing, but your story has captured my heart. I know that you will pull through this. You have a winning attitude that will carry you through this ordeal.

I had a cat many years ago that was dignosed with a near-fatal heart condition at 7 1/2 years old. I did not let the statistics frighten me - within 6 months, 95% of cats will die. I went from vet to vet in Richmond, VA until I found one that said
"I'm not making you any promises, but I'll try something that most other vets won't do". Long story made short - my cat had a few bad "episodes" along the way, but lived 16 long, happy years. He had spirit - just like you! Twelve years after his death, the vet and I are still friends. He always speaks of my cat as the "one in a million that beat the odds". Barbaro, you are that one in a million too. Just keep being brave and fight back at the challenges that come your way. You are one big, beautiful, boy.

Much love,
Rosie Rose

PS - my favorite flowers are hot pink (rosy)roses, so I'm buying one this week in your honor and will think of you each time I look at it.

Posted by: Rosie Rose at August 1, 2006 9:25 PM

Barbaro!!!!!!!!!! You are simply awesome!!!! The news is good, and with your determination and strong spirit, it will continue toward healing little by little. Every hour you're comfortable, is an hour that you are healing. I'm in your corner, Champ, as are many people around the world. We're sending you all the healing energy and light we can possibly generate. And we won't stop, we're with you, Bobby. We believe!

I love you, Precious One.

Alex - thanks for bringing us closer to the horsey world with your interviews. Do you have your press pass yet?

Bobby, you're a classy horse surrounded by classy people. School's out but we are all still learning thanks to you and your family.

Have a great night Big Guy.

THANKS for the link to the msn/fox article. This is more like what I need to hear!

Why can't they include some of the good stuff in the NBC update?

Posted by: Linda in VA at August 1, 2006 9:29 PM

Hi Everyone - I'm home from work and ready to get silly.

Pamela - Mr Ed's voice - for some reason in my head that is how Barbaro talks when he talks! hahaha like horses can talk. In my head they do - should I check myself in to the wacky ward???

Barbaro - what a good update - you are such a sweet boy - behaving - healing - biting, you are too cute. I love you sooo much. xxoo and scratchies.

Aunty Sally

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 1, 2006 9:32 PM

Hmmm... I was just driving home from the post office listening to the talk radio and they had their weekly Barbaro update. This was Milwaukee's WTMJ New radio.

They said that New Bolton Center reported to them today that Barbaro's right leg is healing so well that he would have been out of his cast fairly soon on the right leg but now because of the problem in his left foot he has to continue to wear it.

They reported that the broken bones have healed nicely and that the hoof in the left foot looks good and is beginning to grow back. They replace the cast daily just to keep any infection from developing in the left foot. He remains in stable condition.

This is a little MORE information then given on the UPENN website.

Can you confirm any of this for me Alex? They apparently get some kind of weekly report from NBC.

Posted by: Laura J Smith at August 1, 2006 9:32 PM

That's all true, Laura. Barbaro is healing very nicely. According to one article, he would be in a splint instead of a cast if it wasn't for his laminitis.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri at August 1, 2006 9:34 PM

Hi everyone,

So glad that Bobby is having another good day. All I can say is, "where there is great love, there are always miracles". And I'm counting on one.

Here is a link that was emailed to me about the horse slaughter bill. It's rather interesting and talks about some things I didn't know. Looks like the vote in the House will be the beginning of Sept.

Rosie...your little cat was a miracle, just like our Bobby, and more proof that he can beat the odds and get through this. He has the spirit and determination to do it, and is surrounded by love, and like your miracle boy he has an amazing doctor!! :-)

I've never been a lover of roses, but since Bobby captivated me I'm looking at them differently, and I'm so glad I've got some growing in my garden because they're a constant reminder of him...not that he's ever out of my thoughts!

Picture the Barbaro cheerleaders complete with pompoms standing in front of NBC cheering GROW HOOF GROW.

Or would the site of all of us in cheerleading outfits set poor Bobby back :)

Okay headed to the wacky house now.

Posted by: marie at August 1, 2006 9:47 PM

If Bobby saw me in a cheerleading uniform he would faint right on the spot. Pom Pom's are good - lets forget the uniforms. Maybe T-Shirts - "Bobby's Peeps"

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 1, 2006 9:49 PM

Powerful article Jeannette...Just wonderful!

Posted by: Pamela at August 1, 2006 9:49 PM

First- thank God for Barbaro, and that he is healing, and for every one of you out there who cares about what happens to him. Is it just me, or are there others who would love to hear more about Barbaro's daily routine? I mean, the NBC updates are great, but scanty and few. What happens in a day for Bobby? It was nice when we read last week that he was laying down when the doc came in in the morning. Just stuff like that would be nice to read about. A couple of pictures would be most appreciated, too. I'm not complaining here or anything. Far from it. I think THIS site is the greatest! Not only do I learn how my boy's doing every day, I'm getting educated aboout horse racing, too. I just wish NBC's PR department understood how badly we want to know just any little thing about Bobby.
I just got my Believe in Barbaro! bumper sticker in the mail today. I had it made...cost me $10 at evolvefish.com. I'm gonna go put it on now... I'll check in later.

Laura:

If you look at some of the other posts you'll see a link for msn--it's somewhere over there. It's really a good article. But don't read the one at salon.com cause its really an icky story. The writer had all her facts wrong.

Shelley I'm glad you posted that link. I blasted her article and will no doubt be a victim of some bashing back. Trollie writer.

After that msn article--its GO BARBARO!. Man did I need a great read like that.

Deb G...I now have TVG (the only horse racing channel Direct TV offers) and I LOVE IT!

Posted by: Pamela at August 1, 2006 9:55 PM

Dear Sweet Barbaro: I know you're a horse and you can't read and I'm an adult and shouldn't be writing to a horse. But, you are so beautiful and you are such a hero the way you are facing the struggle of your young life, that I don't care if there is someone out there that thinks I'm nuts. I feel sorry for people who have never loved or cared for an animal (or been loved by one in return). So, pretty boy, keep up the good work, stay strong and know that if I could, I would be there taking care of you myself. Love you .... Ida from Candler, NC

Posted by: Ida Lee at August 1, 2006 9:55 PM

Pamela: That is awesome. I am coming to your house then! How much did it cost? Do you already have cable or do you have satellite....

Posted by: Deb G. at August 1, 2006 9:56 PM

No offense Marie - but the fillys with uniforms could be devestating for Bobby - He wants them naked - in their normal beautiful naked selves. Maybe some flowers in their manes and tails. Or pom poms hooked on to their legs - so when they walk - swish swish swish go the pom poms.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 1, 2006 9:56 PM

Marie and Sally: Perhaps you could make a cheer up for Barbaro????

:-)

Posted by: Deb G. at August 1, 2006 9:57 PM

They closed Colonial Downs in VA today due to "extreme heat," Deb G...

Posted by: Pamela at August 1, 2006 9:59 PM

Ok Marie - you have to write the cheer - I'm a terrible writer.

Give us A B
Give us a A
give us a R
give us a B
give us a A
give us a R
Give us a O

What does that spell - mircle walking!!

Thats as good as it gets.

Posted by: Deb G. at August 1, 2006 10:01 PM

Thanks again, for keeping us posted on Bobby! I am so relieved that the report from New Bolton is good again today. It is so difficult to wait for those reports when they aren't given every day. Keep up the good work!
I continue to pray for Bobby's good progress and for him to pull through all of this. I just know he can do it!

Posted by: Mary at August 1, 2006 10:01 PM

Cumulative score of 99.9!!!

Posted by: Deb G. at August 1, 2006 10:01 PM

Pamela - I know I had Bobby wearing Kahkis the other day - but in reality - horsies don't wear clothes - maybe a blanket or a saddle - but not real clothes. I don't recall Mr Ed wearing clothes - do you???

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 1, 2006 10:02 PM

Posted by: Pamela at August 1, 2006 10:03 PM

Pole dancing - I can see the cute little fillies trying to pole dance for Bobby - I'm sure it would be great entertainment for him. He is sipping a scotch with his horsie buddies - nickering and whinning - Dr Dean is groaning as he doesn't see the attraction. But he continues to drink his scotch as this is guys night!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 1, 2006 10:05 PM

Write a cheer??? That might require a glass of wine and some thought...maybe a couple of glasses :)))

Pole dancing?? We don't want Bobby to get to excited he might hurt himself.

Posted by: Pamela at August 1, 2006 10:09 PM

Jeannette-great piece! Mr. Henchette (did you see his credentials?) really opened up the legislative process for everyone to see.

In the back of my mind, I was always afraid that even if passed, the horse slaughter bill would have so many amendments tagged onto it that in the end it is not the same bill.

But now the bill has many more people (everyone on here and more)watching Congress closely. Hopefully, the legislator that made that horrible proposal about the 2 states will be outvoted.

What do ya say Bobby?

Thanks for sharing.

i have a theory, you all who have posted about the salon article. i think it's a "lure" to enhance hits, subscriptions, whatever, to get anyone to enroll and post a blog response...they obviously know about this site now, due to all of alex's good pr and media outreach endeavors, so i wouldn't take it too seriously as responsible journalism.

i'm in this biz, and just after reading the article, it's just too darn poor an effort of responsible reporting even to be considered credible.

this is turning into a good week for bobby....

What you said makes absolute sense. I didn't even think about it in those terms. But you know what they say, "bad publicity is better that no publicity"

GOSH, IT'S BEEN A BUSY WEEK FOR ME, GLAD BOBBY IS DOING WELL!! :>)

JAN, DID YOU WATCH THE BIO OF SEABISCUIT OR THE MOVIE WITH JEFF BRIDGES? BOTH ARE GREAT!! I SAW THE MOVIE A FEW YEARS AGO, THERE ARE ALSO A COUPLE BIOGRAPHIES ON DVD ABOUT HIM THAT ARE WONDERFUL. YA THINK 60 YEARS FROM NOW PEOPLE WILL BE RENTING "BARBARO" AND TALKING ON A HIGH TECH COMPUTER ABOUT HIM. :>) DREAMER WAS EXCELLENT TOO, AND ALSO VERY FITTING FOR BOBBY.

I'll Be Home For Chrismas

I'll be Home for Christ-mas
You can count on me
Please, fluff my hay
and bye the way
Put car-rots un-der the tree

Christ-mas eve will find me
Where the Barn light gleams
I'll be home for Christ-mas
It won't be just a dream....

Well, we have been having "network issues" here at work all day today so I have no idea if anything that I posted ever went through :)

Here is yet another poem that I wrote in honor of "our boy"....

For Barbaro...

Happy thoughts,
healing prayers,
filling up our minds.
All being sent for the glorious cause,
Barbaro-
exquisite equine.

Inspiration to so many,
strong in countless ways.
With bated breath, on pins and needles,
we patiently wait out the days.

Our hope is that we will someday see you
grazing in a beautiful pasture.
Head held high, no more pain,
A blessing from our master.

Dear, sweet boy, how our hearts cry out
each and every day,
That the miracle of you, Barbaro
will continue to light our way.

So continue to heal,
get stronger with time,
we're cheering you on from the stands.
For you are the definition of courage,
of hope, placed in God's hands.

Also, I posted a Yaaaayyyyyy earlier in response to the latest news from NBC, but again, I have no idea if any of this got posted. So sorry if theses are repeats.

I will check in later tonight to see how everyone is doing and if we have come up with a cheer that we can all do outside of NBC after those glasses of wine :)

Love to all, especially Barbaro.

Posted by: ShelleyA at August 1, 2006 10:29 PM

I check the news stories every single morning for the progress on Barbaro, and post them on my office door. My husband's business and livelihood is the often heartbreaking and sometimes remarkably triumphant world of thoroughbred race horses. I have learned to deal with the ups and downs of the industry and sport, but never, ever has anything broken my heart as to see this magnificent creature on Preakness Saturday. His continued recovery is a triumph of the greatest degree, a triumph of will and champion spirit coupled with steadfast and superb medical support and perhaps carried by the prayers and well wishes of the Faithful Barbaro Fan Club throughout the world. Fight on, magnificent one! Thank you for this wonderful blog site, just discovered today!

SUSAN W. - IN OUR VIGIL ON AOL WE WERE CHATTING ABOUT THE GATES AND HOW DANGEROUS THEY ARE, I DON'T REALLY LIKE THE IDEA OF THEM GOING INTO THE GATES BLINDFOLDED EITHER. ONE OF THE GALS- (VICKY, IT WAS YOU, RIGHT?) SAID SHE'D LOVE TO DESIGN A NEW GATE SO THEY'D BE SAFER!! :>) WOULD BE NICE. After a couple more glasses of wine I may be in the abyss.

So Mr Ed a nature lover - I think Bobby is too except for that blanket he wears with all the signatures - then there is the sling - boing boing boing. My boss asked me today how Barbaro was doing so I told her the latest news and about the swing/sling and his boing around - she laughed but then got a sad look - poor baby she said - I said he's hanging in there - she laughed again - I told her about the left foot - I thought she was gonna cry. I told her he is dog sitting and she just thought that was awesome - he sure is smart isn't he - I told her you have no idea.

Cheryl from Indy...I was watching English races today and was very impressed...The horses go onto the course alone...walk at a leisurely pace...jockeys chatting with each other...they all form a little walking circle when they get behind the gate...then load...it looked a lot more calm and relaxed...the gates also looked more "open."

And, I can't always tell if what I post is seen because sometimes I get responses but most of the time not. Maybe I'm doing it wrong :)

Just for today, can't help but celebrate good news, and cheer with the fine folks from across Barbaro Land. If Dr. R is happy, so are we.

I came upon this website today and I am so happy that I've found a place where I can get daily updates that are not slanted by the media. It also warms my heart to have found so many Barbaro fans who, like myself, are still thinking of him and praying each and every day for his full recovery. I have a special place in my heart for all animals, but the love I feel for a horse that I don't even know just astounds me. It is so nice to know that there are many others who feel the same way. I know that I am among friends when I visit this site. Although I fully realize the seriousness of Barbaro's condition, I believe he's going to make it. Thank God for Michael Matz, Edgar Prado, Dr. Richardson and staff, and especially Mr. & Mrs. Jackson for not giving up on Barbaro. You have my deepest respect and admiration.

Hay everyone - its me Barbaro again. I am really enjoying your postings. Marie, Pamela and Sally - you girls are too much. I don't know what pole dancing or strip tease is and I don't get the police uniforms on fillies - I like them in their natural state - naked and beautiful. I don't drink Scotch and either does Dr Dean - we are beer guys. Every Friday night Dr Dean comes to visit and brings a couple of beers - tastes so good after all that water, horse juice and whatever else they are making me drink. Apparently its working - I feel good today. My right leg is almost healed and my left foot is growing new hoof - I'm excited - I want out of here ASAP. Mrs Jackson is bringing me grass - and I really appreciate it - but I want outside in the pasture so I can get my own grass. When I was at Solon New Bolton the other day having my mane braided I met the cutest little filly. She has having a hooficure - I have been asking around but no one seems to know who she is. I'm hoping to go again this weekend and perhaps see her again and get her number. Whoooowee she is a cutie. Well I gotta go now - doctor incoming - if it is Dr Dean I'll give him a big sloppy kiss for your girls. I love you all and thanks for all the prayers!!!

I want a job as delivery girl at Kennett Florist.
And, thanks to everyone, who is still financially intact, for sending all the goodies to NBC.
I'm just an unemployed student these days. BUT...I did save a lab today. He was running in the street, huffin and puffin (98 degrees today in chicago)I got him into my car, gave him cold water and called the cops. They said they were looking for him and came and got him to bring back to his mommy! I was so happy.

Of cource getting out of the right cast will be great, but leaving it on longer because of the left problem, will only make it stronger when it finally can come off, right?! Cheryl...you are so funny..." I am on drugs today...." Too cute! I think being athletic in my youth helps alot...it teaches you how to push through things...Don't get me wrong...I have some down days, but I work really hard mentally to overcome it...it is just so exhausting...
Say...I'll bet you have a torn medial meniscus..
is that it?

For Barbaro...

Happy thoughts,
healing prayers,
filling up our minds.
All being sent for the glorious cause,
Barbaro-
exquisite equine.

Inspiration to so many,
strong in countless ways.
With bated breath, on pins and needles,
we patiently wait out the days.

Our hope is that we will someday see you
grazing in a beautiful pasture.
Head held high, no more pain,
A blessing from our master.

Dear, sweet boy, how our hearts cry out
each and every day,
That the miracle of you, Barbaro
will continue to light our way.

So continue to heal,
get stronger with time,
we're cheering you on from the stands.
For you are the definition of courage,
of hope, placed in God's hands.

I watched the Seabiscuit movie w/ Jeff Bridges. It sounds like I need to do an amazon.com search for other materials.
I was so amazed by the parallels between Seabiscuit & Barbaro. I just loved it especially when the movie talked about what Seabiscuit did for the ordinary people.

I was also interested in the Buick references. My grandfather was the oldest Buick dealer in this country before his death. So I really want to /have to now read the book!

Some of us are doing happy dances today for the great update on Barbaro.
Alex started this blog site just after the Darby and it save my life. Found it two days after the Preakness. Look around he has pictures old post, articles and updates and the videos are great. Lot's to read.

Alex, your words as related to the Philadelphia Inquirer article are so beautiful. I may be wrong, but I think this may be the first time you have posted so in depth about your personal feelings for Barbaro.

Thank you so much for your touching words. I think you speak for so many!

Pamela - glad that I am not the only one going insane today. I really thought I was losing it earlier.

Let's hope that Marie is right and the site went into the abyss for a while because if it is not that, then they may have to commit me :)

If that becomes necessary, I want all of you to let them know that I would like to be committed somewhere within walking distance of NBC so that I can escape and go se Barbaro. My wishes are now known :)

Hi All Barbaromaniacs,

Another great day of news on Barbaro!!! Iam driving my husband and 4 year old crazy with checking on B. They think I am a little obscessive about the whole thing. So it is very nice to be with people as nutty about B as I am. I look forward to continued progress. I am glad to have read the article wher Dr. R elaborates a little more on B's progress. Wish we had more pictures

Alex, Any news on Messaging and how he is doing without Barbaro and vice versa?

Hope everyone is doing well this evening

Go Big B- keep healing a growing your hoof!!

Posted by: Trish at August 1, 2006 11:14 PM

Good Evening, Team Barbaro!

Marla Hays - I mis-spelled your name the first time I sent "Barbaro's Dream" to you...I did not forget...just can't type to save my soul.

Chris Byers, the story is over 5 pages long...I'd post on the site, but I'm concerned about the length appearing in an individual post.... Tim or Alex, any suggestions? I'm more than happy to e-mail it to people...I'm wondering if I should publish it one page at a time...???

BTW, I've re-written to include Edgar Prado. If we can figure out a way to post this to the site, you can all read what I came up with...

The support you all have given me - for those who have read "Barbaro's Dream/Champion Heart" has been fanstatic. I know my 5-year-old critic in the UK will love it - to have adults love it means so much to me as well...

Now to find an illustrator. I want this to look JUST RIGHT. Then to find a publisher or self-publish...but I don't have the funds for that right now...will put it to the Universe...

Mrs. Jackson is one classy, compassionate lady. If I were in her situation, I'd give my horse fresh-cut grass daily as well. Just shows me that she loves our B passionately.

Loved the updates today!!!! Hooray! Dr. R is sounding more and more guardedly optimistic than a few weeks ago. We all know this is a long road our B has...but I'll take boring anytime. This recovery/healing can't be rushed by any means. Our B is showing all signs that he wants to hang on, that he wants to get better, that he's not giving up. That is what is so inspiring...that he's not giving up.

And neither are we...

Gotta run for a few minutes...will be back to tuck our Bobby J in for the night.

Love seeing all the new people who have found this awesome site. Welcome to this awesome group - we sometimes call ourselves either Team Barbaro or the Barbaromaniacs...works either way...

Healing to all,
Lyn Gilbert

CHERYL IN INDY - I, too, saw the race when Miraculous Miss got stuck under the gate. Don't know why I was watching - love horses, not racing. I shrieked like a banshee until they freed her - seemed to take forever! Lucky nobody else lives here except cats Maizie & Seamus (and they know their mother is a wack-a-doo!).
DON'T MISS THE UPLIFTING ARTICLE "Barbaro's right hind healing well" that's mentioned by Alex - how endearing is this quote:
Owner Gretchen Jackson usually visits twice daily to feed Barbaro fresh-cut grass from her nearby farm. "It makes me feel better about the poor guy stuck in there," she said. "He likes it."

That just did me in - what a sweetie she is - like bringing "the poor guy" Mom's home cooking! I just had the idea of someone at NBC going outside and cutting some grass for him, so finding out that the grass comes from Lael Farm REALLY touched my heart! It's so obvious that if Barbaro can't stand at stud, if the best outcome is that he romps (carefully) around Lael Farm, that will be just fine with the Jacksons! Barbaro, you just have the best people loving you!
Some of you mentioned having problems with links, so if you can't access the article, send me an email to mllebutterfly@sbcglobal.net, put BARBARO ARTICLE in the subject line, and I'll cut & paste it in so you can read the whole thing - it's still quite realistic, but with much positive attitude, too.

Barbaro's Recovery Road

Another day that goes into night -
Our Barbaro "Bobby" continues his fight!
Powerful will and spirit so strong -
Keeps healing right as time marches along!

The resounding cadence he clearly hears -
Turns prayerful tears back to joyful cheers!
Stable and comfortable, caring and able-
Now he is greater than legend Clark Gable.

This Hero brings nations to vigilant prayer-
and his GOOD NEWS travels faster than air.
Peoples voices heard far and wide-
Cheering our "Bobby" on his new ride!

Songs of praise ring through our land-
Adapts to his sling with a helping hand!
Loving nuzzles Team Barbaro returns-
Wiser and smarter than man, "Bobby" learns!

He's captured our hearts and given us hope-
Be soldier or child, he helps everyone cope!
Setbacks in life will only be fleeting-
As Barbaro "Bobby" hears our song's greeting!

Raises us all to stand on mountain tops --
Barbaro's recovery road never stops.
Mystifying faith, he walks on stormy seas-
O' Lael legs move gracefully as you please.

Glimpses of him in us, inside ledge's boulders-
'We are strong when we are on your shoulders.'
Moving slowly, trotting faster, eager to see-
Keeps raising us up greater than we can ever be!

Our Barbaro's recovery road may be long -
His hero's heart rhythms inspire poetic song!
Ambassadors from all states must unite-
Campaigning for Barbaro's toughest fight!

One that will change horseracing forever -
Horse and Jockey athletes safer together!
Make up your mind and do what you must-
For our Barbaro's sake, he's asking your trust!

"Citizens unite" says Barbaro's voice-
Show Congress Track Safety is the right choice!
Sixteen thousand have visited this site.
No small feat in facing Barbaro's plight!

Help make a difference, heed Barbaro's call-
When this goes before Congress this coming Fall.
Take time to review all the facts of this case-
Go to Petition Online thinking with grace.

What if I had to travel recovery's road too?-
How would I make things better for you?
Won't you please take some time to stop in?
Where positive difference helps Barbaro win!

Recovery road may appear seemingly long-
But our Barbaro continues to keep us strong.
"The pen is mighter than the sword", once said.
Rest easier now Barbaro comfortably in bed.

Reporters and journalists are helping out too-
Spreading good news on campaign's trail for you.
Come join voices and hands with our Barbaro-
Be his ambassadors to correct life's "uh oh"!

Change for better, recovery's road new name-
Help Barbaro with us make our new claim!
Our Congress listens and understands-
What is needed for Track Safety in our lands!

Big Bobby Jackson, you have a great night. You're on a roll my boy, and keep going. We want to see ACN in the morning.

Pay no attention to these girls that want to take you to Vegas. What happens there stays there and you are used to publicity since you are the great Barbaro. Stay in Kentucky where the grass is blue.

Ok guys, you are not going to believe this...I am watching the horse races on TVG...they are loading the # 1 horse..he balks a little...the jockey hauls off and back-hands the horse in the head...It is at the Mountaineer race track...
the announcers were talking about what a good horse it is...won a race by 26 lengths...great finishes...then WHAP...the camera cut away when the jockey started to raise his hand again...

You know, the horses who have gotten head-butts
and back-handed don't seem to be hurt...just surprised...I am sure it stung...It is what it says about the crazy human on his back that gets me! Since I have been watching horse racing...(just about nonstop for the past few days)...the majority of horses give the gate a second look or two...This guy was so bloody impatient...I have to ask...WHAT WAS HE THINKING?

Posted by: Pamela at August 1, 2006 11:40 PM

Hey Barbaro! Glad you got access to a keyboard! Grrreat to hear from you [even if your voice sounded more like Jack Nicholson than Mr. Ed ;)]

So you're tippin' back brewskies with Dr.DR and eyeballin' the babes at the salon, eh? Maybe you can invite that little filly over for a 'swing' something? And how 'bout your mom bringing you fresh cut grass -- nobody loves ya like yer mudda ;)

So glad to hear the GREAT news about your right leg healing up so good. Bummer about having to keep the cast on, but hay, ya gotta do whatcha gotta do. And whatcha gotta do is GROW HOOF GROW!

Have a nice slumber tonight; sweet dreams of sunnny days, open pastures, and a bevy of beauties!

Do you have an extra email account that you could have for people to write you at? Be careful of spammers. Like set one up here and then you can delete it at some point. That way people can send you their email addys. I think most email accounts should be able to handle 35k. What format is it in? If its in .doc--people will need some kind of microsoft word reader. they use to offer the reader portion as a free download at microsoft.

Home For Christmas...The Miracle Continues...

Posted by: Melissa K. at August 1, 2006 11:44 PM

It's been going on all along and in the past it was more obvious and out in the open. I remember Harvey Smith beating Matty Brown over and over on the way back to the paddock after she'd knocked a fence down in show-jumping. If a top showjumper did that today I think they'd be in big trouble.

Maybe because of Bobby more of us are starting to take more of an interest and notice these things in racing. I've only just started to sit and watch and I'm seeing things all the time that are far from an act of kindness towards the horse.

Hi All.

I was going to post earlier but we lost power for about 3 hrs (and in this dang *&*&* heat wave also.. I took myself and my elderly mother to the cooling center until power came back on.

I had GOOD results from the PET scan, cancer has NOT spread and it shows the cancer shrinking!! So it is a good day, and means I have less chemo to endure now!!! Thank goodness. I hope the one I have Friday will not kick my butt like the last one, but at least it is suppose to be cooler by then. I do not care for this heat wave (we are under a warning ) and will be glad to see it go!!!

Okay Bobby!! I have been thinking about you, I am pulling for you (as I know if you could "talk" you would be encourging me also!!!) I hope you like the card I sent you, you should be getting it by Thursday. I wish I could do more .. Hugs and kisses on your cute face!!

Pamela,
I just sent the Mountaineer race track an email expressing my outrage at this episode. Let's see if they answer. Agreed, someone said, we have to do something as a group to stop the abuse.

Beautiful Barbaro! So happy to hear your good report today! Praise God! Part of your purpose it seems is bringing to "light" the "dark" side of racing - that must be changed. Tracks, treatment, etc. Love you big guy - keep up the excellent race!

Posted by: Faye at August 1, 2006 11:50 PM

Pamela as long as they race safely and no mule or man gets hurt - I guess its ok with me.

Thanks again Alex & Tim for all you are doing. You are so very appreciated.

Thank you again today to Barbaro's medical team at NBC, Dr. R., the Jacksons, the Matz's, Brette's, Kathy, Edgar and everyone else out there who continue to pray for Barbaro. Thank you for all you are doing and not giving up. God bless you all!

Sweet dreams Bobby!

Sally, I think of mules as our friendly beasts of burden...sturdy...hard working...not speed demons...the whole thing struck me as bizarre...

Posted by: Pamela at August 1, 2006 11:56 PM

May I speak for a moment, as someone with authority, about insurance companies, and what they do or do not dictate? This is pertaining to an article ( definition: a small object :) ) regarding the Jacksons and what their insurers will NOT allow??? I won't even dignify the "what" any further. The conjecture should not even be articulated any further because it is so absurd. Anyway, having worked my entire career in insurance and having first-hand knowledge in "how" it works, no company would ever, could not ever, would be ethically and morally deficit, not to mention would be guilty of the omnipotent evil "BF", ( that's "bad faith" to those of you who don't care to know anything about insurance, and who could fault you for that :))and would be subject to all manner of court ordered sanctions and fines, etc., etc. for even SUGGESTING that the Jacksons or ANYONE should.....well, you know. Again, I will not articulate it because the whole concept just disgusts me. An insurer would "drop", "cancel", whatever...disassociated itself from an insured if the insurer had good cause to discontinue its' policies of insurance for anyone. But to suggest that.....oh, you know, that disgusting thought...well that is so abhorent I can't even believe that anyone who represents himself or herself to write "journalistically" with "authority", suggesting that one has knowledge and privy to a relationship between an insurance company and an insured ( namely, the Jacksons and their wonderful Barbaro, whom we all know and deeply love ) makes me sick. There. I got it out of my system.

It is also my opinion that any such suggestion, valid or not, would be thorougly rejected by the Jacksons. These people have bucket-loads of integrity, as evidenced by their love and devotion to their horse and their desire to have the very best possible care, training, and medical care for their horse.

Take heart,my friends. Irresponsible journalism is just that, and well, you just can't believe everything you read, no matter how reputable a writer tries to appear. If it doesn't make sense, it probably isn't so. And please believe me. This just couldn't possibly be so. Bobby will get all the care he needs until he walks out on his own. Insurers have no devine rights. I know this.

Love to all, (especially Barbaro, the Jacksons, Drs. Richardson et al at NBC, MMatz, EPrado Tim, Alex, Peter, Rachel, Kennett-hope I'm not forgetting anyone;0))

Pamela - I thought they were beasts of burden - they have no business racing - they arn't fast - just dependable and sturdy little animals. Whoever is racing them should be shot!! Like I said earlier people will do anything for money - I think I'll start racing my kitties with the other kitties in the neighborhood - I could make some extra money for bobby! could that be any worse than racing mules??? Sick Sick Sick

It IS bizarre!! I Googled it and found another article on ESPN (I think). Sounds like a nature vs. nurture experiment. Apparently there is a professional mule racing circuit, good grief!

Hey sweet baby! Read the interview with Dr D...and it sounds like you're doing all the right things to help yourself...Kudos to Dr D and the staff for helping you. Have another good night, dearest Barbaro. I know there's still a long ways to go, but that interview gladdened my heart.

Bet you enjoyed that grass that your Momma brought you. Ummm..you didn't nip her now, did you?

Posted by: Toby at August 2, 2006 12:15 AM

Mike C....they had a mule race on the horse racing channel that I watch...it was the strangest thing I have ever seen...the poor guys were trying so hard to go fast...the jockeys were beating the crap out of them...one mule clipped the hoof of the one in front of him and then came the pile up...of jockeys...three of them...OUCH...not funny....

Posted by: Pamela at August 2, 2006 12:16 AM

My sentiments exactly...I don't think you can make the arguement that mules are ' bred to run
races...'

Hey Sal,

My Kitties will kick your Kitties A$$'s! (is that politically correct?)

One day I came home, loaded down with grocery bags. An Orange Tabby bolted out from under the hedges! I thought it was Fitty, my cat! I dropped the food all over and took off down the street after him, screaming his name.

Have you EVER known an overweight, small Jewish woman to outrun ANY cat? LOL

When I gave up and went in to house in tears, there lay the Orange Lump, on the couch!

That other Kitty is probably "in treatment" for PTSD!!!

Posted by: Pamela at August 2, 2006 12:23 AM

lol, Pamela!

Reminds me of more animal stories from work. Had a lady call one time wanting to report animal cruelty because some kids were "racing" their hamsters. Apparently they were squirting them with little water to get them to move and she felt that was cruel. We did send an officer, he didn't do anything, of course, just told them to move it inside.

The postings on this site today have been so uplifting and informative. I am so proud to be a part of this group. Bobby is a miracle happening

Bobby, dream sweet dreams tonight. We will all be here for you when you wake up. We are all here to stay.

Mr and Mrs Jackson, you set the standard for thoroughbred owners. It is apparent that Barbaro is much loved. Congratulations on your win today.

Dr R and Staff, there are not enough words to say how gratefull we are for all that you are doing for our hero and for all the others under your care at NBC.

Alex, Tim and all who work at Tim Wolley Racing, you are our lifeline.

Mary L, so glad to hear about the results of your scan. Stay cool, it is definitely hot here in Ohio.

Received my Barbaro hat from HorseHats the other day. It is really neat and I love wearing it.

All take care, I am having a glass of wine and finishing reading my Funny Cide book.

Animal stories, I tell you, I have a million of them. Had a guy call just today telling me he had a cobra outside his door, a COBRA! It was just a big water moccasin. Dry weather here really drives the snakes out and we get ALL the calls.

are we comparing cats now?

let me introduce you to Hairball- the ginormous lynx point Himalayan mix who lives with me. He's somewhere around 20 lbs of cat. Not really fat, not really skinny, just big cat.

He loves to visit the neighbors, and won't take guff off of any dog. I watched him teach Fluff, one of the other cats, to run off a German Shepherd with little more than a "don't even think about it" glare.

Exciting News!!!!!!!!!

I work in a Bank and we have a customer who manages a Horse Farm, training center, etc.

I've known John for 3+ years, but today is the first time I asked him what he thought about Barbaro. We just had a general, hope does well, conversation.

As John was leaving, he very off-handedly said, "Oh, he has the best with Dean, as his doctor!" I said, "Do you know Dr. Richardson and NBC?"

He replied, "Oh, we're there all the time and I peeked in on Barbaro the other week".

I told him, after hyperventilating, that if he EVER touches Bobby or "Dean", he'd better come right to the Bank, before showering!

I wa SOOOOOO excited! Felt like when I say The Supremes in 1965!!!!!!!

Very well respected, influencial person in the industry.
I'm going to see if I can track down how to contact him and see if there's anything our group can do.
If any of you get this magazine, please read this article. Don't know if you can get in on-line but it was written by Tom Keyser

cats I love cats. I have two now. Sugar and Spice. Just regular cats. Spice is a Red Tabby and Sugar is a Calico/tabby. They are both around 6 years old. I got them within six months of one another. Cause I lost my other cats within six months. Cassie who was my pure bred himalayan she got cancer. It wasn't long after we found out she had it that she died at home. Tiny she was my cat for 17 years. The last ten years of those 17 years I gave her a pill every day cause she was hyperthyroid.

Spice I swear he thinks he is half squirrel I leave my christmas tree up through March take the decorations off but leave the tree so he can climb up in it and lay down on the branches. He is also an expert cabinet door opener so I had to put the child safe locks on the doors of all my cabinets.

I don't what I would do without my cats. They are there to greet me at the door when I come home. They sleep with me every night. I love my fur babies.

How I wish I had money to just buy a place somewhere and live there with a bunch of animals.

Phyllis,
y'all aren't getting any of those little pockets of rain? The farmers here didn't really even get much to call crops, as dry as we'd been- the forecast says rain all the way through to next week, but nary a drop here.
We did get a bunch a couple of weeks ago, but as hot as it's been, we need it again.

LoL, I never intended to have cats. I've always had Dobermans. But then the kids brought one home. He "followed them". Unh huh. Then Hairball was a gift from the neighbors. I said, "that's it, no more cats"- and the dog then proceeded to bring home a kitten each year for four years.
*sigh*

My momma dog is gone, but the rescued mutt I have now just sort of resigned himself to living with felines.

Sally,

I always crush it between two spoons and put it in a little bit of wet food. But make sure it's just a small amount so you make sure he got all the med

Posted by: ShelleyA at August 2, 2006 1:06 AM

Toby - I have tried that - but with 3 other kitties they want to eat his food or drink his water. They are used to eating out of a self feeding container and the water is in a large bowl. So when I try to put the crushed up pill in food - he will not even get close unless they are all eating out of the same plate. I have tried everything I can think of. I did just now put a paper bag in the middle of the floor - I'm hoping he goes for it - I'll nap him and force the pill down this throat while he fights me. He knows that when it get dark it pill time!!!

Posted by: Pamela at August 2, 2006 1:19 AM

ok - the paper bag worked - I grabbed him - thinking I already had half a pill (his dosage) I grabbed the pills and no half pills - so holding him so tightly I put one of his pills in my mouth and ing him how much I loved him - petting him rubbing his whiskers - rubbing his belly - he hates me for now - later he will snuggle in bed. Whew - another night of pill giving is done!!!

Why is this such a major thing every night - I hate it - he hates it! I think I'm gonna call the vet and have her come over every night to give him his pill - that way he will hate her - which he already does - I wonder how much a house call is? Hmmmm - my tongue is numb - must been the pill I bit in half!

Sally, It won't help tonight, but they make a pill dispenser for cats. It is like a plunger 4.5 inches long. You place the pill in the end, put on the back of the tongue and depress plunger. Maybe you could schedule his meds at feeding time, then you wouldn't have to wait until he comes from under the couch. Lynn G.

Yo, Sally.

Sometimes it works to wrap kitty's body in a towel with only the little head (i.e. the business end) sticking out.

Works for a short time, anyway, till kitty starts running from towels. On the bright side, it'll keep kitty from sitting on your fresh laundry for awhile.

It is almost as strange as the woman who called 911 last week to try to date the cop.

Posted by: Susan E. at August 2, 2006 1:31 AM

I don' really have too much of a problem giving him the pill - he does hide it under his tongue - but I have finally figured out to hold his head back so he has no choice but to swallow the pill - the problem is - getting him out from under the couch - he knows that when it is dark outside its pill time and he hides. I guess I'll use the paper bag for a while until he catches on. He is very smart - I think he may be related to Bobby! !! Just a much smaller version - they are almost the same color!!!

Thanks for all your advice!!!

Leslie thanks for the site, it was very interesting
"They Lead Horses Away From Slaughter" at

http://www.startribune.com/693/story/586960.html

91,757 beautiful creature were slaughtered in 2005. So sad.

SALLY, on a lighter note. I use a pill despenser for cats. I got it from the vet. I can't describe how it looks but it works so well. I have a little Persian from a resuce who came with lots of problems and had to be medicated twice a day for 4 mos., it was a life saver. And now with my other sick kitty China I'm using it again. I gets the pill in their mouth so fast sometimes they don't know what's happened! If your vet doesn't have one, someone once told me they thought they had them at Pets Mart. If they available way down here in deeeeep South TX, I'm sure you could pick one up somewhere.

Posted by: Susan in TX at August 2, 2006 1:39 AM

I'm watching Last Comic Standing - I thinking with all our humor in the last few weeks - someone needs to do a ocmedy routine about Bobby. His pole dancing fillies, his sighting at the airport in Key West, his sitting dogging style in the sling - his boing boign boing - maybe pamela could come up with a routine - it is possible without hurting barbaro's reputation - any one have any ideas??? Maybe we could get Ellen degeners to do a routine - she is always gentle!!

my vet always instruted me to Hold the Cat in the lap against your body with your arm around the body and holding the head. Using the other hand as well, you pry open the jaws and pop the pill on the tounge then Quickly Shut the jaws and try to hold them shut.

Then here the part that usually works...you stroke them on the adams apple while holding the mouth shut (semi lightly shut). This makes thier tounge come out and then HAVE to swallow right then and there. Stroking the adams apple makes them swallow and good bye pill!!

I often wondered if Canterbury was addressing the issue of horses beyond their racing career. Adoption programs have been very successful in the Greyhound racing industry and it's great to see that our Canterbury Park is working with the horses connections to get the horses placed. Thank you again for posting the link.

I just read your comment about the rabid armadillo, lol! No, not the same person but of about the same intelligence! Someone is always seeing an "exotic" snake of somekind. People here are also convinced that bobcats or coyotes are dangerous to humans. I don't know what rock these people have been hiding under but their lack of knowledge about animals is amazing! I can not imagine what they would do if they lived somewhere where there were bears or something really dangerous! For you people in Colorado, I think of a visit to Estes Park one spring where I saw elk lying in people's front yards and all over the golf course, I can only imagine the calls people down here would make if they had to deal with something that big!

I've gotta say Good Night Barbaro(maniacs)! I pray for another healing, restful night (grow hoof, grow!) and wish the rest of you sweet dreams!

Bring Kleenex...

How to give the cat a pill in 20 easy steps:

Sit on sofa. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your elbow as though you were going to give a bottle to a baby. Talk softly to it.

With right hand, position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. (be patient) As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow. Drop pill into mouth. Let go of cat, noticing the direction it runs.

Pick the pill up off the floor and go get the cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process. Sit on floor in kitchen, wrap arm around cat as before, drop pill in mouth. Let go of cat, noticing the direction it runs.

Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away. Scoot across floor to pick up pill, and go find the cat. Bring it back into the kitchen. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten. Drop pill into mouth.

Pry claws from back legs out of your arm. Go get the cat, pick up half-dissolved pill from floor and drop it into garbage can.

Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of closet. Call spouse from backyard. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

Retrieve cat from curtain rod, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered Doulton figures from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

Get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with rubber band.

Fetch screwdriver from garage and put door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Throw T-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

Call fire department to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take another pill from foil wrap.

Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed, force cat's mouth open with small spanner. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour one cup of water down throat to wash pill down.

Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call at furniture shop on way home to order new table.

Get last pill from bottle. Go into bathroom and get a fluffy towel. Stay in the bathroom with the cat, and close the door.

Sit on bathroom floor, wrap towel around kitty, leaving only his head exposed. Cradle kitty in the crook of your arm, and pick up pill off of counter.

Retrieve cat from top of shower door (you didn't know that cats can jump 5 feet straight up in the air, did you?), and wrap towel around it a little tighter, making sure its paws can't come out this time. With fingers at either side of its jaw, pry it open and pop pill into mouth. Quickly close mouth (his, not yours).

Sit on floor with cat in your lap, stroking it under the chin and talking gently to it for at least a half hour, while the pill dissolves.

Unwrap towel, open bathroom door. Wash off scratches in warm soapy water, comb your hair, and go find something to occupy your time for 7-1/2 hours.

Arrange for SPCA to get cat and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

About Del Mar: Let me get this straight, and please someone correct me if I am wrong, New Joysey Jeff breaks down and has to wait 19 minutes for ambulance, ambulance can't get on track due to poor track conditions, But the track conditions were deemed good enough to let these powerful animals run on? Then they make the poor horse walk with a broken leg to the ambulance??

Just when I thought I had heard it all. Shame on you Del Mar, Disgusting.

On another note: Laura in Key West, I believe you were "right on" about my Walter. She is getting better every day. Thank you so much for your vision and positive energy.

Thank you again to everyone who has prayed for my kitty, and kept her in your thoughts. It's been a long two weeks, but she is so much better now!

Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Jackson on Enticing's win.

Mike C: Thank you so much for the call today. It was so descriptive, I felt like I was really there. I enjoy your calls very much...Thanks again!

Unfortunately, another candle will be lit tonight, this time for New Joysey Jeff...so sorry sweetheart. You're in the arms of the angels now. Be free and happy. Again, my heart breaks.

Well now to you sweet Bobby. Get a good night's sleep and dream sweet dreams-we want you to stay rested and happy. You continue to amaze and inspire me in ways I never thought possible. You truly are my hero.

I continue to pray that your hardest days are behind you, with only healing and progess from here on out. My heart soars at the thought of you walking out of NBC. It's going to happen one day Bobby, just be a patient boy...you'll get there, and when you do, boy oh boy, what a party I bet they'll throw for you! Wish I could be there to share in the celebration, but just knowing you're happy and healthy again, and that you've gone home is more than enough for me!

Have a restful, peaceful night sweet boy. I love you.

The miracle continues.

Ashley

Pam: then I guess duty calls. Time to write another email. And you know, sometimes I think writing emails is worthless, and not going to make a difference, but I have to make an effort.
As I am sure we all feel compelled to do, if not for the sake of other horses, then for Barbaro.

At least, they were all responded to, Even if they were all cut and paste jobs ( which is good actually, because it indicates having to respond to multiple emails)

At least they see a response from the public and are well aware that there are people out there who are not happy.

The insurance post was by someone in the industry and totally poo pooed the ideas written about the Jacksons/the insurers of Barbaro in Salon Magazine...

Posted by: Pamela at August 2, 2006 2:58 AM

Thank you Linda A in Oregon...Ashley...take a hankie...

Posted by: Pamela at August 2, 2006 2:59 AM

Debra WI: I think also somewhere in an article and as best as I can tell, if a horse breaks down, and if the owner decides on 'E" apparently there is no questions asked by the insurance company and a check is issued.

I read that several place when it first happened, they were all saying basically, that the Jacksons could of made that choice right there, and there would of been no questions asked by the insurers.

If thats the case, I would encourage insurers to take notice of Barbaro, and that a horse does not always need to be E'. Should be a clause in their stating all owners must exercise any reasonable option for the sustainment of life before any such decision can be made.

Posted by: Shannon & Zeena at August 2, 2006 2:59 AM

Pamela- Yes I found it. I realize that it's already been talked about today but I just have to say one thing on my mind. To picture this injured, scared horse being forced to walk to the ambulance makes me sick to my stomach. I seriously want to throw up. What can we do? How can I help?

I love you Barbaro. I know the "others" up in horsey heaven are looking down at you, smiling (yes smiling) and helping you pull through this. In a sense, they continue on through you.

Sally in the Keys

Try coating the pill in butter or margerine. It slides down easier and tastes better. That works for us, but sometime it takes both of us.

I've never tried the pill dispenser - was afraid they'd aspirate (sp?) the pill.

Mary L - superb news. I will continue to send positive thoughts.

It's been a good a day. I remind myself to be "cautiously optomistic" but it's hard not to back do mental backflips.

Shannon and Zeena

There is a clause that says when owners/trainers a condition of accepting a license is that we must adhere to the decision of the track vet in case of any injury. It has something to do with not allowing undue suffering to the animal.
We had it posted a couple of weeks ago but I can't find it.
The track vet's opinion is supposed to supercede the opinion of the owner or trainer.

There is usually no insurance involved. Only a small percentage...just the "big" horses are insured. Most regular race horses are not insured. So the insurance companies are not really involved in these decisions.

Deb G

Do you still have a copy of this rule that you can post?

It is late, everyone. My eyes are starting to blurr from reading all of the interesting, and entertaining posts. Barbaro's nation is one of the best of all possible worlds.
re Racing Mules: I think it's OK. They ARE half horse you know. I'll bet (no pun intended) that speed can be bred into them too. (even though they are sterile...go figure). Since they are half horse, perhaps the horse half has some of the Godolphin in it too. ........well, it COULD happen.....BUT ONLY RACE THEM ON SAFE TRACKS THOUGH. And yes, mules are beautiful too.

Saddly I did not see much interest or response to my quieries about the possibility of an owner/trainer boycot of DelMar, Arlington, and other dangerous tracks. Nor was there any answer to whether or not "little brother'has a white spot on his heel. No big deal, in th grand sceme of things. The updates are the most important reason to be here; to send some good vibes his way; and to fellowship with all the other BELEIVERS. Just trying to add a cent or two to the mixe. Hey, I even had a glass of wine.....(whine)...now I'm really tired.

Lyn G, thank you for E-ing "the Dream" to me.
I appreciate art-from-the-heart. I will treasure it, and all of my time spent here in Barbaro's love light.

Good night all. I plan to read a few more posts, then tear myself away and get some sleep.

Until the next update, sweet dreams to you all, and to our Dear Boy.

Lyn (the other)

I saw your comment on boycotting of dangerous tracks. Unfortunately I'm not an owner or trainer but maybe you should bring it up again tomorrow when more people are awake and see what the repsonse is. I think it would be a good topic to get different peoples opinions on.

Wish I had a glass of wine!

ShelleyA: Thanks for getting back on that, I knew there were some clauses involved but not exactly sure on what kind. Thanks for that information. Yes it is understandable, for the undo suffering. Like I said earlier, I would hope for any reasobable option to sustain life. Reasonable being the key word. And as we know, reasonable varies quite alot depending on who you talk to.

I had some thoughts about Barbaro's fund, I was wonderring how and when they are going to decide to use it. I really hope it can go to horses who have a really good chance, but lack the financial needs. Nothing I hate to see more, then someone losing a loved one over lack of finances. Would be nice if that fund could help owners in such a dilemna.

The other idea was, I believe there are about 3 equine recovery pools in the USA. I think there is one in CA and somewhere else. I don't know how busy that pool is, but I was wonderring also if there was maybe plans to use his fund to build another pool onsite. It really seems to have played an important part for Barbaro. He has used it what? 3 times? He's a pro. And he has come around beautifully every time.

I finally read Ruffian, after years of putting it off. Barbaro is brilliant, and has adapted so well. I cant help but wish Ruffian had a safer journey. But there is no doubt that she was loved to the end. And that is the most important thing.

I think it's a great idea to boycott dangerous tracks! Sometimes it's the only way to draw attention to the problems and it could bring others attention to the issues, could raise awareness.

Sending love and healing wishes your way, Bobby, as you lay down to sleep in your spacious, clean stall. Wonder whether you sleep on straw or shavings. Whatever it is, I know they make you as comfy as possible. Hay, maybe it's not so bad being a convalescent when you're a VIH (very important horse) and you get all that TLC and love hugs every day! But don't get too used to it, cause we want you to get all well asap. Sweet dreams, Bobby, may tomorrow be another good day for you. Will be joining the world-wide "good vibes club" Saturday at 7 pm to send you tons of healing energy and love. And thanks, Alex, for keeping on keeping on to bring us the good news every day. what would we do w/o you?!

To all the east coasters turning in, Good night!

Bonnie: Earlier Deb G posted her response from Funny Cide's team, although they did not say they were boycotting Arlington, they did say that the track safety was indeed part of their consideration not to run him. So I am thankful for that.

Hello Everyone! This is my first time posting. My house mate is a Barbaro "MANIAC". I figured if I can't beat it, join it! After all Barbaro is the screen saver I see every morning. DNKY is the love of my life, my 3 year old malte-poo. We would like to share in sending our good thoughts and prayers to Barbaro for a great recovery and a wonderful happy life ahead.

May the Horse be with you all!

Oh, I know it's late and you are already tucked in for the night, but I wanted to wish you a happy, healthful, restful nights sleep. I know that you can feel all of the love that is being sent your way, and I hope that you have a sense of how much you have inspired so many.

I say my prayers every night for all of the important people in my life, situations, my dogs and now, you.

Keep that handsome chin up, listen to your docs and nurses and be a good boy -- no more "sneak attack" biting (although secretly I think it is adorable).

Dr. R and fellow staffers, thank you for your continued hard work on behalf of Barbaro and all of your other patients - not enough thanks can be said.

Alex, you are a saint for taking the time to keep the Barbaro nation updated each and every day.

Jacksons, thank you for never giving up on Barbaro, he is worth every moment and dollar that is being spent on his recovery. You are to be admired.

To Barbaro, hugs, kisses, ear scratches, nose rubs and MUCH LOVE.

Welcome Lori W and DKNY...

Enjoy this site. We are here to encourage one another and to send positive energy to Barbaro and his people...that means to eachother too.

Part of Barbaro's work, now that he is not racing, is to be the focal point of the horse world. He is our banner...our standard to rally around. Here, you will find many important causes to fight for and issues to spread the word about.

Barbaro is still a winner, and undefeated. We help him (and his people) in every way we can...even if it is to simply agree together for the victories. God made him to be exactly what he is. Our brave and excellent champion.

HI Bobby,

Good that you have such a good appetite! I watch that in my mare too. I am battling altitude sickness at 5300 ft elev. Any high pressure or low pressure system affects her. You are lucky to be lower, believe me! I am moving her down in Oct, to 2300, where she will fair much better. As long as you eat your carrots, you will pull through! I firmly believe that!!!

Candles and prayers coming your way from way western Wyoming!

Hey Sally in KW with the medicine-resistant kitty. ( like that would really happen :)) did you ever hear the little story about how to pill a cat? I think it ends something like "drink the rest of the (brandy-wine-vodka-whatever) put bandaids on your wounds...." it is pretty funny. anyway, been there, done that. My darling SO is a small animal vet here, and he often orders transdermal or oral suspension doseages for kitties and doggies. My little ones have had meds that were compoumded. There is a great pharmacy up on Longmont that specializes in compounding. Maybe your vet could order your kitty's meds in either an oral suspension or a transdermal paste. You could just put it in his ear. Painless for both of you.

I'm still reeling with the self-recrimination we fourlegged children parents feel frequently because I accidently booted my wide-bottom boy today because I didn't look down before I stepped back as I usually do. Scared the beejeebees out of him. He's my 11yr old flame pt himi with the biggest, bluest eyes. His name is Puddy. He doesn't hold a grudge, thank GOD. So if giving you a little bit of advise will in some way compensate for my momentary lapse of good mommyness, maybe I won't feel guilty forever.
My little manx girl who just turned five has had many meds that were compounded into "ear-smear" and believe me, these types of meds save everybody a LOT of grief.

Goodnight for now, my friend, and to all my friends here. Goodnight to our sweet boy, the prayers will continue and I'll look forward to news of another restful, peaceful night and word of healing. Grow, hoof, GROW!!! Mend, bones, MEND!! We love you, Barbaro

BARBARO,NITEY NITE HONEY!

Mary I think that was the poem.....I'm not sure there might have been another little Christmasy one too....anyway,here is 'this one'..

"Bobby singing (ala Mr. Ed)

I'll be home for Christ-mas
You can count on me
Please fluff my hay
and bye the way
Put car-rots un-der the tree....

Christmas Eve will find me
Where the barn light gleams
I'll be home for Christ-mas
It won't be just a dream..."

Sally in KW-

Take the advice from Cheryl Jones about the kitty meds. I am a pharmacist and certain pharmacies DO specialize in compounding pet medications (think beef and cheese flavor). They can be made into suspensions so they are easier to give. Not every pharmacist or pharmacy can do this, but if you can find one that does a lot of compounding in general you should be okay.

Now I'm really going to bed.

Just caught up on all the posts tonight...sorry I missed the fun. Giving medicine to cats reminded me of when my parrot had an upper respitory infection and I had to give him nasal washes...long story short, I finally decide it was easier to drive to the vets office every day than do it myself. Saved money on E.R. bills that way also!
Mary L I am so pleased you had good news today, my prayers have been with you.
I so enjoy all of the lively conversations here...it really cheers me up after a long day.
Karan in Las Vegas - I think the Crazy Horse has been here forever. Even since I was a little girl...how long have you been in Vegas?
Susan W - Hope you are doing well...I keep you in my thoughts.
Mary C- I hope my fellow Campbell is doing well also...My Dad always said it is hard to keep a Campbell down for long.
To everyone else, have a wonderful evening. And to Sweet Bobby, keep up the good work Sweetheart, my prayers are always with you!

Good night and God Bless,

It's late and I should go to bed, but it's hard to stop reading all the wonderful posts.

Barbaro - you definately are smart to have surrounded yourself with just the right people to support you in this epic struggle. Love your feisty attitude- it's so great to here of your mischevious side.

Mrs. Jackson- what an angel you are. Much more than just Barbaro's 'owner'.

Cindy - your dad was right- the Campbells are a resilient bunch. My family is all in western Canada, but we have distant cousins in North Carolina. Loved your story about your parrot.

Shannon - Just watched your videos - amazing and moving!

The humor and banter and funny animal stories are so refreshing. I think we are all on a 'high' over all the recent good news.

Way to go Barbaro!
The Miracle continues.

O, you guys! What another wonderful day of Barbaro bits, and what another nation of sleep deprived nose to the news hurry up before everyone else is asleep Barbaromaniacs you have here on the west coast!

I can't begin to list all the well wishes I would like to send, (Mary L, so pleased!), but you all know -

Linnie, your impassioned commentary at 6:36 pm on 1 August really said it all. It is so difficult to become aware without becoming increasingly distressed, and the overarching question is how can we bring the power here to bear in the most effective fashion. I was just horrified to read the news of New Joysey Jeff. Is it not enough to suffer the injury without the additional abuse the track management inflicted, even unintentionally? The question of intention is moot - the track management should be ashamed to call themselves any kind of guardians of these animals with the purest of souls who only do what we ask of them.

The comment was made that someone had referred to Barbaro as a messenger sent to help his fellow creatures in this cause - has anyone made the connection that his pony, his friend, is NAMED Messenging???? We all are looking for signs, and that one couldn't be clearer...

When all these posts for today are read in one sitting, as I did, the good and bad are all mixed up together (and the humor is such a relief!) but it is still very overwhelming to have such life and death so close.

Barbaro, please save us.

Thank you, thank you for the Jacksons, who have the grace and courage to inspire us to become better human beings.

Thank you Alex and Tim, for providing the forum.

Thank you, NBC, Dr. Dean, Dr. Anderson, all the staff and bitees, KF and the growers of organic baby carrots, for your intensive care of our boy. Thank you to the pool inventors, and the sling makers, the top quality hay growers and the hot walkers and groomers at Fair Hill.

Thank you, dear Edgar Prado, for proving that riding a horse for a living does not have to destroy your soul.

Thank you, silly Bobby, for insisting on attention and being "wicked smart"!!! We love you more than you will ever know, but we'll keep trying to tell you how very much.

Good night to all,
