Barbaro Updates: 33

updates are now here.

Update 367: For my third interview I wanted to talk to Jose Caraballo, who rode Barbaro in his first two races. I know Jose a little bit, he is one of the leading jockeys at Delaware Park. He also comes over to Fair Hill from time to time to breeze horses. Last winter he spent more time at Fair Hill as his wife was stabled here. I freelanced out of the barn in which they were stabled. He was always very nice and easy going.

I went over to Delaware Park earlier this week for the Mike Rea Relief Fund raffle (good to note Mike is progressing) hoping to catch up with Jose for this interview. I was then reminded Jose was off for a few days with an injury. Anyway, I acquired his cell phone number and called him today. He was very willing to share his Barbaro story, and here it is:

Jose Caraballo: I had not ridden Barbaro before I rode him in his first start. Peter Brette had done all his work. I did ride his older half brother, Holy Ground, and he was a good horse. I also watched Barbaro work one morning at Fair Hill, I loved the way he worked. Obviously I wanted to ride him.

The first race I rode him he was pretty unbelievable. He did everything right, although he was a little slow away. I knew immediately I had a hell of a horse underneath me. While he was a little green, he never stopped running. He showed he was a nice horse and I was very impressed.

I hoped I would get a chance to ride him back, and I did, in the Laurel Futurity. In 22 years of riding races I have never been on a horse like the one I was on that day. I have ridden over 2,000 winners. That day he went by the other horses like they were ponies. It was as if they were 2yos and Barbaro was a 5yo. He had so much power, he really impressed me that day.

Watching the Kentucky Derby, at Fair Hill with all the other Barbaro fans, I was very happy. I was proud to be a part of the Barbaro team. He was so impressive winning the Derby I felt sure he could win the triple crown. I was honoured to be a part of that history. I could say I rode him, if only twice. I was obviously very sad when I watched the Preakness. It is very hard to describe my initial feelings, but it was kind of like shock. I felt connected in someway to the horse. I only hope now he can recover. He is doing well I know, but it will be a long road ahead. I look forward to seeing him one day, carefree. I continue to ride for Michael, he has been very good to me, you can only wish the best for Barbaro and all those connected to him.

Update 366: Some more lovely poetry (I apologise in advance to poems that I miss):
Wm & CL at August 3, 2006 12:59 PM (below):

Two hundred thousand plus travel page views-
as Tim Woolley Racing keeps spreading good news!

Barbaro's Recovery Road may be long-
with adoring fans keeping Barbaro strong.
Beyond the prayers must our pensmanship speak-
Help make our horse athletes safer every week!

Thousands can make all the difference today-
Sign the petiton while Barbaro munches top hay!
He thanks you with nods, bows, and a wink-
For making his day while all of you think!

What if I had to travel recovery's road too?
How would I make things better for you?
Remember Michael's Miracle as all of us pray-
Keep lighting those candles each night and day!

Whispering Barbaro to heal better than ever!
Reminding Team Barbaro 'Never Say Never.'
Listen, there's whispers 'Don't You Quit!'
Not on our watch while all of us sit!

Watch Miracles happen on Recovery's Road
Let Mike Rea's and Barbaro's stories be told!
Lightens our spirits, we breathe easier now-
while GOOD NEWS spreads like wildfire, WOW!

Raise up your voices and sing us a song-
as Barbaro's & Mike's Recovery Road is long!
Send your GOOD WISHES and special gifts today-
While Barbaro eats special Lael grass and hay!

More than prayer, we now must all think-
Save our horse racing athletes from the brink!
Of broken down horses, we will talk no more-
as it's time for "Bobby" to snooze and snore!

YOU CAN MAKE the greatest difference for him-
Sign that petition Online helps Barbaro win!
A new kind of race so pick up your pace-
Come in and visit and show us your face!

Stop "Oh No's" and "Uh Oh's" before they begin-
Barbaro's campaign travels where noone has been!
Small step for horses, one giant step for men-
Start today with a click of a key instead of when?

Change Recovery's Road name to Better Road soon-
Time is of essence as this day approaches noon!
Takes but a moment, a flashback in time-
Moments keep passing, hearing Barbaro's chime!

Go if you must, but remember these words-
Make Racing Tracks safer for thoroughbred herds!
Todays Hopes are Tomorrow's Can Dos-
Jockeys and Horses need to hear the good news!

America cares, how much will that be?
Putting words into action for citizens to see-
Campaign for Barbaro until we make a difference!
Recovery Road is our Better Road with reverence!

The Mighty Barbaro

Sired by a strapping spit fire
and a Dam who is as elegant and dainty in opposition,
Your entrance in this world was one of sheer determination and will-
You made your presence be known early on that you are no ordinary colt-
For you are the mighty Barbaro- who is to be cherished, loved and adored!
With Speeds of lighting, others are in awe, to witness such grace and beauty, and to see you be adored.
People flock to be in your presence and feel your aura fill their hearts with joy and excitement.
You have given so much and ask for so little return- for we who love you yearn for more...
So we come to you to give back a little of what you have given- your determination and will to strive and win.
For you are our CHAMPION- no one can contend.
The battle may be long, but we are in it together for the win-
A finish line of green pastures and fields to roam, for all to see your
beauty shining from within...
You are the mighty Barbaro- who is cherished and adored- a true miracle in every sense of the word!

"Special One"

Oh, magnificent creature, brave and strong, you did everything right, yet something went wrong. Running into the wind so fearless that day, catastrophe struck - and took our breath away.

As fear gripped our hearts and the world cried out "WHY?" like the champion you are, you held your head high. The weeks that ensued brought elation and pain, yet we all know your plight has not been in vain.

You've inspired your caretakers to give all they can give, because you've made it quite clear you have a strong will to live! You've touched so many lives and you don't even know, please continue to heal; we love you, Barbaro!

May angels surround you, bringing comfort and peace, until God takes you home in years, months or weeks ... where in heaven you'll run free with no pain, that I know. Yes, our Lord loves you MOST, Special One, Barbaro.

This is a good time to remind us of all the good content on the fan media page. It seems that early on in this "journey" fan creativity was focused on imagery / video etc. and now the focus has shifted to words.

Finally, lets not forget we have a vigil planned for saturday, 7 pm (east coast time). Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, spare some time for Barbaro. While things are going well, we cannot lose focus, he has a long road ahead we hope.

Update 365: Sabina Louise Pierce spent last saturday at Fair Hill taking some pictures. She has included a few of these shots in her horses gallery. Very nice. This comment was left in updates 32 10:10 PM about the Barbaro Fund:

Well, to my biggest surprise yesterday, when I picked up my mail, there was an envelope addressed to me with a return address of: Penn Veterinary Medicine - The Barbaro Fund. I hurriedly opened it up to find a "Thank You" card. The front of the card has that great great photo of Bobby winning the Derby with Edgar up blazing across the finish line with his mane, tail flying in the wind; this is the photo taken by Bill Franken/Sports Illustrated.

When I opened the card I read the following:

Thank you for your generous contribution to the Barbaro Fund. This fund has been designed to support the George D. Widener Hospital at New Bolton Center and will be used for treating animals like Barbaro and countless others in their time of need.

I was soooooooooooo deelighted to receive this that I immediately ran out to buy a frame for this 5x7 gorgeous photo. And so I did! A lovely all wooden frame the color of Bobby ... that deep rich chestnut.

When I got home, I wanted to keep the original intact so I made an exact 'copy' of the front of the card with my own printer/copier/scanner and it came out Purrrrr-fect! I framed it and hung it on my wall right next to another 8x10 of Bobby I had printed out a couple of weeks ago and framed, and Bobby is 'hanging' right next to all my beautiful framed photos of "Big Red". So I was then able to take the original card and put it back in its envelope and tuck it away in a file folder labeled "Barbaro."

The following article attributes Bobby's influence to canceling racing yesterday: Canceling card was right move at Saratoga, the article concludes:

In the post-Barbaro era, the humans who make decisions that affect the lives of horses are beginning to consider the interests of preserving the animal or at least, whenever possible, reducing risk.

There is no Eclipse Award for this, but perhaps there should be.

For my next interview, I am going to try to interview Bobby's first jockey, Jose Caraballo.

Update 364: New Bolton's press release today: Barbaro continues to improve:

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro's left hind hoof is slowly showing evidence of regrowth after surgery last month to treat laminitis. Laminitis occurs when laminae, the strong connecting tis sues that attach the pedal bone and the inner hoof wall, are inflamed. "The coronary band (the portion of the hoof that is responsible for continued downward growth of the hoof) is beginning to re-establish itself," said Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery at the George D. Widener Hospital.

Barbaro's right hind leg continues to be protected in a cast. "The original fractures have apparently healed well, but the cast is necessary to protect the pastern fusion," Dr. Richardson said. "This protection is required because he must bear most of his weight on the right hind limb due to the laminitis in the left hind leg."

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, August 8, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 363: Another comfortable night for Barbaro (wednesday night). Saw Michael Matz as I was coming back from the track on my second set. He had just heard from Dr. Richardson. I also expressed my condolences to Michael about the passing of Mr. Dixon.
Updated Thursday 7:05am

Update 362: The Philadephia Inquirer article about this site was picked up by a couple of other news media the next day, with a new title: Barbaro's fans hold Web vigil. Oddly, while the Lexington Herald Leader seemed to be first to pick it up, others (ContraCostaTimes and MiamiHerald) did so using the Lexington Heralds "title tag", so they must have simply used the same "code" as the Lexington Herald ? I assume Lexington Herald got the story from MercuryNews.

Some content from the comments from update 32.

First an uplifting, if not amusing story (Nancy in CT: 11:59 pm):

LINNIE RE YOUR BARBARO HAT (and anyone else who cares to wade through this message) - forgot to tell you my funny story: I held off buying a hat until I saw that they were donating "a portion" of the proceeds to the Barbaro Fund, so it just arrived a few days ago. It's hot as the fires of hell here in CT, and I'm very heat-sensitive, so I wore it walking to the bus stop after work on Monday. A man approached me and said, "Are you one of those maniacs?" My initial reaction (who me, sensitive?) was, If he says something idiotic like "it's JUST a horse" I could be prone to violence...especially in 95 degree heat! Over the space of just a few seconds I saw myself being arrested for assault in defense of "just a horse named Barbaro" and what's really funny is that I would have been arrested by one of the members of our mounted unit - all pals of mine! But wisdom prevailed, I counted to ten and replied, "What do you mean?" HERE'S THE GREAT PART - he said that he'd stumbled on this site while looking for info, saw that it appeared to be all women, felt uncomfortable...and left, but NOT before seeing references to BARBAROMANIACS and that's why he wondered if I was "one of those maniacs"! After I stopped laughing, I begged him to come back here - don't think he will - he just seemed interested rather than obsessed/addicted like the rest of us. He wanted to know about sending a gift and I mentioned the florist and also that I was ordering some all-natural treats online AND HE ACTUALLY PRESSED $5. UPON ME TO FEEL PART OF SENDING GOODIES TO BARBARO! There was absolutely no convincing him to take his money back (and I was moved to tears, to be honest) and when I asked him how he knew I wouldn't take his money and go to Burger King or something like that, he said, "BECAUSE YOU WOULDN'T BE WEARING THAT SILLY HAT WITH YOUR BUSINESS CLOTHES IF YOU WEREN'T THE REAL DEAL!!"

A poem (Anna 11:16 pm):

On wings unseen
you surely fly
by pure design
no cause to lie

loved for your beauty
your heart, your fire
you run for joy;
innate desire

you heal our sorrows
and trust our hands
giving unselfishly,
with no demand

we take credit
surely not due
only One above
created you

be you statuesque stud
or humble plow
we owe you much
and repay…how?

and a poem (Jo 10:59 pm):

Ruler Of The Wind...

The wind knows you..
The wind loves you..
The wind has kissed you..
and you..dark wonder horse.. have danced with the wind..

The wind misses you...
The wind sings to you each day
Breathing life ..healing and health so softly..whispering...
That she longs to dance with you again..

Yet at this time, when that dance has
become a cherished memory in your mind..
It still.. is... with ... you...
It caresses your body gently where you sleep..
and.. heal...and dream ..

She lulls you to peaceful rest..
Whistles softly...sweetly..
She will always be with you..
and you with her..
Sweet Barbaro.. ruler of the wind..

I love the story...I can understand being easily led to violence due to the heat! I have lived in Las Vegas my whole life and have not figured out how to get used to the heat yet.
This site has been so uplifting in so many ways...especially since I seem to be loosing all of my non-Barbaromaniac friends, st least this way it never gets lonely.

Love and peace to all and especially my dear Bobby,

Morning Bobby, Alex and all...just finished catching up on the night's activities!

I hope Bobby had a good day yesterday and has had another comfortable night.

Trish....not sure if you got your questions answered but, like alot of people, I often wonder if Bobby and Messaging are missing each other.

As for the photos...I doubt Bobby is looking his best, and I think pictures of him might upset me...not sure. But the most important thing right now is knowing that he's being looked after and getting better day by day.

Waiting for those three magic words!!!

Been comming here for updates for about 3 weeks; have never been anything more than casually interested in horses before Barbaro....now I'm obsessed....is there a previous post about how to contact the florist to arrange gifts for the staff at NBC (and Bobby too of course)? Thanks!

ALEX - what a surprise to wake up and see my story "front and center." I'm really grateful that you did this because with the amount of posts going on here things can disappear so quickly - I know I never catch up with with I miss when I go to work! I wanted more of "the gang" to be able to see this...THANKS!
This was a great lesson in (a) not jumping to conclusions--like the people who counted Barbaro out! and (b) not underestimated the kindness of strangers! I'm DELIGHTED that this happened to me because many people I know would have walked by with the attitude of "I don't know you - why are you speaking to me?".
With gratitude to you and everyone at Fair Hill for all you do for us,

CAN HARDLY WAIT TO HEAR ABOUT "ACN"!!!!! I really, really try to pull on my own reins because there's still so far to go, but Barbaro amazes and inspires me every day!

Nancy in CT--Can you tell me, where did you get the hat? What does it say? As many have observed, it's hard to keep up with everything on the site. But I too could use a hat to wear with my business clothes, especially in this heat!!!

Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

Sweet B...I didn't post last night, but sent you Reiki as my lullabye...hope your sleep was refreshing. Its another hot day in Chester County (supposed to be thunderstorms later today...I can only hope for a break in the heat). Today is a new day for you to continue to heal and be the Chipper Nipper.

Shelley H - got your e-mail re Gallant Secret's owners. I'll print out the story and get it to them so they know its gonna be "out there".

Margaret, I've sent you the final version of "Barbaro's Dream/Champion Heart". I've included nearly 2 pages of dedications (hey, I'm the author here and I am grateful to a lot of people and animals.).

If any of the new people haven't signed the petition...please add your voice.

Any word on the proposed DC trip?

Re visiting Fair Hill, I'm going up on Saturday, August 12th. I'll confirm with Alex the day before, but I plan to be there around 8 a.m. Anybody want to meet me there? We can ply Alex with coffee and donuts and endless questions and then go out for a late breakfast somewhere...let me know - I'd love to meet other Barbaro Nation members face-to-face.

Am sleepy...need to rest. More later.

Have a wonderful day, everybody. Scratchies and carrots to Barbaro...

Healing to all,
Lyn Gilbert

HI KATHLEEN,

You can call Kennett Sq. Florist directly, and either arrange for a gift basket for Bobby, or anyone you'd like (they like to do baskets combining goodies for Bobby and for staff), or, if you can donate toward a basket, that would be great. They have some in the works....Mr. Matz, for one. We are arranging something special for Dr. R's birthday on 8/30... When they get enough donations, they make it up and bring it to NBC. They are the nicest people.

Some people have also ordered super breakfasts for the staff...Lunches, ice cream, snacks for the night shift, etc. KS Florist will handle anything...

The number is: 610-444-6040.

We love you, Barbaro!

hello Shannon and Zeena:

the pony wasn't mine to keep ... just to ride for the day - all around the tiny, stoplight-less town, down Main Street, even, always guided by granddaddy's friend Pete, riding beside me.

That one day was special enough.

Now, if only I could have ever met my *other* grandfather's legendary railbird buddy, who I'm told wore a celluloid eyepatch and lived by the track in Charleston, W. Va. I'm sure there was more than one story there. :)

i loved the story about the barbaro hat bless her heart..i nearly came to fists wiht a intoxicated wall street guy on my commutor line the other night..he over heard me talking about barbaro to my friends and he shouted acrocs the aisle to shoot the horse.. we all were ready to hit him big time..everyone looked shocked but we stayed cool..
i fortunaltely ignored him and became more serene knowing negativity wont help barbaro or any of us..at all.
.after a while the guy wanted to knwo about barbaro and i carefully stuck simple facts
he got softer ..and tired to argue wiht me but i just lisetend .the upshot was that everyone found out about a lot of horse issues and discovered anohter barbaro adoring fan..for good reason.
there is nothing crzy asbout stanidng up for a creature that has an extraordinary voice..it makes all the differnce in so many lives when folks see you care..at least that is the way things work here on the streets of nyc..i have had so many wonderful subway talks wiht foks who need to vent and share..it is part of being a new yorker..

Hello, Alex, from England! I normally live in Plymouth Meeting, PA, but I'm visitng my family in Oswestry and Shrewsbury in Shropshire for a couple of weeks, and head back to the USA today.

Just want to thank you SO much for this website which has given me a lifeline for information about Barbaro while I've been away. As with everyone else, it's the first place I check when I log on with my early morning coffee.

It's absolutely fantastic how the Big Horse is doing, especially when you consider where we were three weeks ago. I really think he's going to make it.

Anyway, SO MUCH appreciation for your incredible hard work with the website. It's terrific.

Good morning Barbaro and everyone,

So Glad to hear that you are still doing great Bobby. Dont Ever Give up Big B. Personally I am very Happy that they are keeping all the Photographers and VIP visits to a minimum for you so that you can simply have a little R and R time for yourself.

Doctor Richardson will be there for you and so will your Mom, Michael, and all the folks at NBC.
WE are all here too Bobby. We'll never leave you.
But it's ok for you to just chill and dont worry about the rest of the world right now.
The main thing for you to do is to stand squarely buddy. Now dont go leaning...just use the sling when ya need to. I know you know how to do it!!

Folks out here are writing some real pretty words for you Bobby. I hope that you can hear them in your dreams......

I know that I do.

Susan...Alex put the link below in with this update yesterday..

"Update 362: A few things to cover. It is sad to note the passing of Fitz Eugene Dixon. He was a longtime patron of Fair Hill, he had horses with Dr. Fisher and Michael Matz. Peter told me about the passing, he noted that Mr. Dixon and Michael were close."

ACN--music to my ears.

You guys should go back to yesterdays posts.

Toward the bottom should be a link to the cutest Barbaro cartoon. You will laugh and get a great chuckle.

We had an earthquake last night out here. It was centered about 50 miles north of me. But it was SO STRONG--I thought for sure the epicenter would be two blocks from me. After Loma Prieta they just can just get very unsettling. Loma Prieta was our BIG earthquake about 17 years ago and that was super scary. But my house is fine and while I'm still a little unsettled still I'm alright.

I need to go upload Lyn's story to my site. I'll be back later...

Can't help but think about the comment from an exercise rider at Fair Hill: Told Matz right after Barbaro's breakdown.

"He was shook up. He said, 'The Lord doesn't give you anything you can't handle.' Then he rode away a couple of strides, stopped, looked back and said, 'He must think you're an awfully tough guy.' "
And now the loss of Mr. Dixon.
Lord be with Mr. Matz he needs some good news, he needs Michael's Miracle

I'm pretty certain that the quote you used (about the Lord not giving anything that can't be handled) was uttered by Mike Rea before being injured at Fair Hills.

I check in twice a day at least to see how Barbaro is doing. But this my first time commenting. An interesting column picked up by many newspapers this morning. Referring to NYRA's unprecedented Saratoga Race Track closing yesterday due to concerns over heat stress (not mentioned in article is filly who collapsed last week in front of grandstand -- she was revived)writer attributes the increased sensitivity to someone near and dear to the Barbaro-maniacs. Paul Moran writing for Newsday said:

"The Barbaro effect is beginning to manifest itself.

With his fragile but remarkable recovery from the painstakingly documented injury he suffered in the Preakness and the subsequent complications that threaten his future, Barbaro's influence is evident, even at Saratoga, where NYRA lives and dies by the attendance and betting figures."

I'm thinking about 10 months until hoof wall grows long enough for Barbaro to be out of the woods... hmmm, counting the days, how many days and how many ACNs down out of the 300 or so he has to go?

And here's a moment of silence to all the innocent, unsung horse heroes who have died racing or training.

Thank you so much Tim and Alex for this site.

Good Morning Bobby,

Way to go little friend! You are so amazing to me. You keep it up and know how much we love you and are in your corner. I feel like my day is off to a good start when I hear those magic words- another comfortable night! Each day that passes your hoof grows a little bit more. I wish I had some kind of miracle grow for hoofs to make it pop right out overnight, lol. But you need to get the proper rest and nutrition to heal properly- and you are getting that now. So you have another great day and rest when you need to. You are in my thoughts and prayers always. I'll be back later to check on you my little friend. Remember, I BELIEVE IN YOU ALWAYS! Sending you love and kisses.

Here is an interesting article (on the sling)(not sure if it's been around or not - if so, just pass by)

URL - http://www.news.ucdavis.edu/search/news_detail.lasso?id=7832

Title:UC Davis Discoveries Supporting Barbaro

As Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro fights to recover from life-threatening complications of an injury suffered during the May 20 Preakness Stakes, equipment developed at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is being put to work to help save the famous colt.

The ambulance and splint used to transport and stabilize Barbaro after his right rear leg broke in three places were developed by Gregory Ferraro, now director of the UC Davis Center for Equine Health within the School of Veterinary Medicine. Both the ambulance and splint, manufactured by Kimzey Welding Works Inc. in Woodland, Calif., grew out of the company's work in the 1970s and 1980s with Ferraro, who was then a racetrack veterinarian and president of the Southern California Equine Foundation.

The ambulance features a hydraulic system that lowers the door to the ground and a winch that can pull a stretcher and horse safely into the ambulance, as well as a movable wall that can gently squeeze a standing horse to support it during transport to a veterinary hospital.

When Barbaro's condition worsened, they turned to using a novel sling developed at UC Davis called the Anderson sling. This unique lifting device allows a horse to be supported, with the weight taken off the legs, and to sleep standing up. It was developed at UC Davis by John Madigan, an expert in emergency equine veterinary medicine at UC Davis in conjunction with welder Charles Anderson and Rich Morgan. The sling was designed for use to lift weak and injured horses and has found its way into veterinary clinics around the world. The system uses a rectangular metal frame, hoisted above the horse, with a unique support that comfortably lifts the horse by the skeletal system. It is now also commonly used to support horses following surgery or an injury, and to airlift injured horses via helicopter from remote locations.

"The sling has saved many horses that could not rise on their own or needed to be comfortably supported in the upright position while they recovered from an injury," Madigan said, noting that more than 100 modifications were made to the sling during its eight years of development at UC Davis. "It's gratifying to know that Barbaro is resting comfortably in our sling and can rest his injured leg."

"We hope that this type of work continues," Ferraro said. "We are still far from solving all of the problems associated with equine performance injuries."

Barbaro - GOOD MORNING HANDSOME!!!!!!Another comfortable night is exactly what I wanted to read when I checked on you this morning. YEA!! I'm so proud of you, Champ. You are indeed a miracle, and you never cease to amaze me each and every day. You have helped my spirit reach for the stars more times than you could know, merely by being yourself. Thank you, Precious Boy, for showing so many of us your inner strength and stamina and helping us understand what determination can do. My hero, I pray constantly that your healing will continue and that your spirit will remain strong.

To the author of "Ruler of the Wind," your words reached me more than any others. I don't really like to tear up first thing in the morning, it ruins my eyes and face for hours to come, but your words reached around my heart and squeezed. Thank you.

Bobby - I hope your day continues to be comfortable. Be strong, stay gorgeous - I'll check with you a little later.

All my love, all the healing light and energy I can provide are yours.

Always,

I loved the story. 'moved to volence' is easily understandable. While at the Breyerfest in Kentucky there were a handful of people that looked like they saw a space invader when talking of Barbaro...then, of course, that led to a discussion.

I had asked an artist there (who sketches/draws?) from pictures if she thought of drawing Barbaro --- we won't even go into the details on that one.

My fellow workers know that Barbaro comes first BEFORE any work gets done (reading the updates, etc.,)

Believe in BARBARO!!!

Another ACN!!! How wonderful!!

I have an interesting story. My fiancee is a prominent doctor, surgeon, oncologist and full professor....very accomplished in human healing.

He knows I am in love with Barbaro...and I give him daily reports. I wasn't quite sure what he thought about my "obsession" and great love for Barbaro but figured it is a part of me and he better get used to it.

The other night, after I told him Barbaro was still doing well I started telling him about the healing process. I told him about the sling and Barbaro using it and sitting like a dog and bouncing and letting "his staff" know when he wants back in the sling. I told him about the nipping at people when their backs were turned and his demand for treats.....well, you know, all of the wonderful things about our boy.

I had his FULL attention, not always easy to get. He was amazed, curious and very interested in what Dr. Richardson is doing. I showed him this site and the Penn Vet site...He said with emotion and love in his voice..."That is such an intelligent horse!"

He likes more detailed updates now and wants me to get involved in track safety, no slaughter and he brought up Barbaro's story the other night at a professional dinner. Barbaro's story stops people and they listen!!!

I am happy I am going to marry someone who "gets it"...about Barbaro. I don't think I would if he didn't....maybe Barbaro's story is a litmus test for us all. I want to surround myself with the kind of people who love Barbaro and are cheering and praying for his healing.

That is why I love this site....I am surrounded with people who "get it".

I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES
I BELIEVE IN BARBARO

What a nice way to start the morning with a positive update on our Barbaro, and two poems by Anna and Jo that were so touching! At this point, all of us who continue to post are genuinely "Barbaromaniacs" and are not about to give up on believing in this magnificent horse. There are many people who make fun of my dedication and commitment in following Barbaro's progress and survival, but that's okay, because we may be nutty, but our efforts are contributing to positive developments with petitions, monetary contributions to the Bolton fund, and writing letters in support of banning horse slaughter to our congressmen. Additionally, I think we all appreciate the sincerity and kindness shown by all involved in the medical care the New Bolton, knowing how hard and fiercely they work to heal animal lives. While war and upheaval swirls around all of us, it is not exclusive to the belief in the well-being and care of all of God's creatures. Those of us who use our energies rooting for Barbaro, stand for many more issues that might promote and more compassionate and caring world. Meanwhile, let the fight for Barbaro's survival go on.

Good Morning,

I have a suggestion and some request.

When posters refer to something they read earlier include at least the posted by associated with the text, example Posted by: Linda Lee at August 3, 2006 12:38.p.m. This way it will keep the more important information a little more current. Copy and then paste works well here.

Alex: could you add a SEARCH to this website and we could type in a key word.

And last, posters add some returns once in a while to your paragraphs. I hope I don't hurt any feelings, but I want to read all of what you write and it makes it easier.

HORSE HANDS ACROSS AMERICA!

P.S. I have the following birthdays: BOBBY 4/29/03, Dr. R. 08/30/1953, Michael Matz 1/23/1951, Edgar Prado's 6/12/67.

what is my connection to barbaro, 13 years after my son was born i was diagnosis with postparturm cardiomypathy, congestive heartfailure and was told my prognosis was unsure, however i did what i was told, take my meds and such, and now i look at this wonderful horse and yes 13 years ago he would had been put down, however he is overcoming. This is way i come to this site I have a personal connection, and unless you have face death you cant understand, and barbaro has faced death and he is overcoming

Dear Alex,

ACN!!! Grow Hoof Grow!

The article you linked to yesterday was fantastic!

The reporter (a Pulitzer Prize winner) explains what the evil forces in Congress have done to try and derail the Anti-Slaughter legislation. This is a must read! And a thank you to the writer might be a good idea too(e-mail address is at the end of the article.) I am including this article in the package I am sending to Robert Redford and think Viggo needs a copy too.

Thanks again Alex! You are the best!

Hello. EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS...

Heat cancels cards at three racetracks
COMPILED BY INQUIRER STAFF

Delaware Park, Saratoga and Monmouth Park canceled live racing yesterday because of the intense heat and humidity.

On Tuesday, Delaware Park also canceled live racing but Philadelphia Park did conduct a full 10-race card, ending at 4:08 p.m. The track was closed for live racing yesterday.

Both local tracks resume Saturday.

I THINK ITS HORRIBLE THAT Philadelphia Park did not cancel racing in 100 degree heat..

These are the things that people who love animals, and Barbaro need to rally behind, and put the heat on Philadelphia Park for not THINKING OF THE ANIMALS, BUT OF $$ If the other racetracks can cancel they should too!!! The Carriage horses in Philadelphia cannot come out if the temp is over 90.. But horse can race in that heat? unfdortuneately the racetrack isnt in Philly , but Bensalem.. someone shoudl check out what there code is for animals in heat?

ACN!! What a way to start the day! :)

NANCY IN CT--Cool story! I sometimes think people care more than they want to admit, you know, it's part of that "I'm tough" mentality.

My local paper, which has no idea racing exists during the year except during the Triple Crown, ran a Barbaro update yesterday. You know how they usually identify the subject (i.e., Kentucky Derby winner...etc.)? The paragraph just mentioned him as "Barbaro" as if EVERYONE knows who he is and what he is going through. Ya better believe it! ;)

Believe in Barbaro! We all do!

u can check them out at www.sabinalouisepierce.com
and go to horses on teh index page..
one note. the photo of the black horse running in the field is my premarin mare Toby that was rescued in Canada out of the slaughterhouses.. she gets to live for the rest of her life at www.ryerss.org. a retirement farm for horses, but they have a few rescues.. I was fortunate enough to have her given to me at 4 mos as I went undercover on assignment when she was rescued.. she is seven now and my best mate! pss.. the gray running is at ryerss to and u can see how beautiful the farm is in the background.

cheers, Sabina

Today we get another update from New Bolton Center. And it is already there!!!!

Barbaro continues to improve
August 3, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro’s left hind hoof is slowly showing evidence of regrowth after surgery last month to treat laminitis. Laminitis occurs when laminae, the strong connecting tis sues that attach the pedal bone and the inner hoof wall, are inflamed. “The coronary band (the portion of the hoof that is responsible for continued downward growth of the hoof) is beginning to re-establish itself," said Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery at the George D. Widener Hospital.

Barbaro’s right hind leg continues to be protected in a cast. “The original fractures have apparently healed well, but the cast is necessary to protect the pastern fusion,” Dr. Richardson said. “This protection is required because he must bear most of his weight on the right hind limb due to the laminitis in the left hind leg.”

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania’s George D. Widener Hospital.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, August 8, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

For more information on Barbaro, please see www.vet.upenn.edu.

Alex, congratulations on the success of the site. I believe that it is popular not only because of the best updates on Barbaro, but because of the engaging way you've introduced and talk about the horses and people of Fair Hill. Thanks for all the wonderful pointers to articles about Barbaro. I look forward to following the careers of your current and future horses. And (greedily), I hope that when all settles down you'll let us see more of the other horses, especially Man in Havana and yet to be named Little Brother. Best wishes to all taking care of Barbaro and continued prayers for his recovery.

Alex, thank you so much for your work on this site--so many of us have come to depend on it for our daily Barbaro news and encouragement.

Just an indication of how Barbaro's story has captured everyone's attention (and hearts), our local paper (Ames, Iowa) yesterday ran a story and large picture of Barbaro and Dr. R. that took up the top half of a page in the sports section. And central Iowa is most definitely not horseracing country. :-)

Hi Gang!

Have to make this short. Received word from John Hanchette about reproducing his article about HR503 in my local newspaper. He gave me permission and told me what the paper had to do for copy purposes.

So, I am out the door to deliver to the paper so that the rest of the public can be educated on what is happening with our horses here in the States.

Thank you, thank you Alex, or whomever, who posted that reference to John's article in the Niagara Falls Reporter.

We will let you know what happens. Also stopping by some veternarian offices to make sure they have too!

Bye for now!

Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

Margaret, I found a typo in the first attachment - the second sending is the corrected version. (can't have Edgar's name spelled wrong...that just won't do...)

Michael Matz, I read about Mr. Dixon's generosity of spirit. All of Mr. Dixon's family and friends are in my prayers. You are surrounded by such amazing people. I have a feeling that Mr. Dixon will keep his presence known to his loved ones...he will be missed.

Read the BBC article about the head-butting jockey. Now that his actions have been seen literally world-wide, he will have to watch his p's and q's, yes????

Anna and Jo, Wm & Cl and Barbaro Jackson - the poems are wonderful. We've got to somehow get a collection of all these wonderful works together.

Nancy in CT - what a story.

Loved the sling article...it answered some questions I had. I can still see our Bobby J nudging someone at NBC to kindly give him some sling time...

Lindann...your fiance is a keeper. As lucky as you are to have him in your life, he's lucky to have you open his eyes even more...congratulations.

Now for my contribution to the Barbaro Effect. I just heard from Abbie's mother - Tracy. She's read "Barbaro's Dream" to Abbie who now wants Mummy to buy a farm with butterflies, cats, horses". Tracy has asked permission to send a copy to Abbie's school for Abbie's teachers to read to the class in the fall. I have given the permission since it will spread the word about Barbaro, Gallant Secret and kindness to animals to young children - which has been my goal all along.

Tracy has been a staunch supporter of my writing since last fall when I sent her both my stories and most of my poetry. Tracy will set up the poetry website hopefully in the fall when I'm in Europe for a few months. I wish she could be my European business manager with the way things are going...:)

That's it for now. Must work on the Reiki website.

Healing to all

A tip for Sallie
and all other future vacationers:

There is a lot of concern on the site, as to what people will do without news of Barbaro when out of town this summer. I just did that for 6 days and I can tell you it was tough.

My main problem was lack of time to get out of the house and go online; I was helping my mom, who is elderly.

But I did find a way to check one time, halfway through my absence. I went to her local library. I used my mother's card to access the Internet on one of the public computers. Afterwards, I spoke with the woman at the card-issuing desk about some problems I had had using the card, and she said that if I had not been able to get my mother's card to work, she would have issued me a temporary card.

So if you are traveling, see if you can find a library, and see if you can arrange to get a visitor's pass to use the public computers.

Good Morning Barbaro, I am smiling with delight that once again you had a comfortable night!

You are a special, special animal that God watches over with great care, for he knows you are the inspiration to many to make changes in an industry that has seen tragedy after tragedy...your fighting spirit has energized people all over the world to take a good look at horse racing and some of its problems. With you leading the charge some of these problems can be addressed and changed for the better, so we don't continue to have horses needlessly put down before their time.

So thank you, Barbaro....for being YOU!!!

Another thank you to all the people that watch over Barbaro and all the other injured animals at NBC, y'all are are absolutely the best!!!!

This news came in a little while ago....

O'Neill banned for butting horse

O'Neill plants a head-butt on City Affair
Jockey Paul O'Neill, who head-butted a horse during a meeting at Stratford, has been given a one-day ban by the Horseracing Regulatory Authority.
O'Neill had lost his cool when his mount City Affair unseated him before a race last month.

The jockey got to his feet and grabbed the reins, pulling his horse to him, before nodding the front of his helmet onto the horse's head.

O'Neill said: "I want to take this opportunity to say how sorry I am."

O'Neill, who will be banned on Friday 11 August, was represented at the hearing by John Blake of the Jockeys Association.

"In terms of the day-ban, it's consistent with other penalties for similar, very rare - I'm pleased to say - incidents," Blake told News 24.

"But the penalty is only part of it. The incident's been broadcast nationally, internationally, around the world.

"There's been a lot of response, quite rightly, to this incident, and Paul's career as a freelance jockey will be affected by that for weeks, months, maybe even years to come.

Barbaro Nation:

Just saw the update....this is the BEST news we've had since last Friday's statement from Dr. R. Grow, hoof, grow...we still need to take it one day at a time, but I also know Dr. R wouldn't say anything unless he'd seen it with his eyes.

Sabina, you are so brave to have gone undercover...your pics are astounding to see. I feel as though I'm right there with you. To have rescued one horse and kissed by our Bobby J - what more could a woman ask for???? You are another hero...

Mary L, how are you feeling?

to the Floridians - what's the latest on Chris? Are you all safe for the time being? Hmmmm.....maybe with the power of prayer, we can steer Chris into open water where it can die out...

Gotta go....

Healing to all,
Lyn Gilbert

Great Story! But...

"All women?" I think NOT. :)

If you can't tell by my name, I'm a guy, and I've been captivated by Barbaro's magnificence since I first saw him strolling the paddock before last fall's Laurel Futurity. He won that race (as you all no doubt know)in a ROMP. It took your breath away. You had a feeling that...

Hopefully now more guys will feel free to write. I don't get it anyway...what's to be afraid of?

Besides, all you women are phenomenal! You epitomize what the best of humanity is all about!

My maniac credentials: Every day, before I log on to this site, I repeat to myself "Go, Go Barbaro, Go!" and cross my fingers for good luck. That's my way of sending Karma. Also, every day, when I go running, I wear one of my 4 different Barbaro T-shirts. Again, for Karma. If I run well, Barbaro will benefit. Can I join the club?

Go, Go Barbaro, Go!

Lyn Gilbert

Hi -- I'm back. I skimmed yesterday's posts and saw several references to something you have written. Is it the story you were going to write? Is it posted someplace?

Thanks!

"Barbaro continues to improve"

I just want to jump up and down. Such wonderful news from NBC and you Alex. Yipeeee!

Just had to check one last time before I leave on vacation for a few days.

By the way the story about the hat was hysterical!

*Carol Nichols-
** Is there anyone who know if and how we can but the Dr R. or Barbaro braclets?????*********
****

Carol, to address your question, there is a Barbaro wristband in the works, but we are awaiting approval on this before proceeding further. There will be no "Dr. R." bracelet, as the focus of this is Barbaro.

Steps have been taken to get the proper approval.

Welcome, William Willer! Glad to see that some of the men have stopped "lurking"! There was another one yesterday, Dennis, who had been quietly reading for awhile.

I had the same reaction as you when I saw Barbaro for the first time before the Derby. I could not believe what I was seeing.

Thank you God for such good news, Bobby's hoof is "officially" starting to regrow! May God continue his miraculous recovery, continue to fuse the pastron, protect him from infections, and keep all his other hooves healthy. Stay comfortable "chipper nipper"!
