Barbaro Updates: 37

updates are now here.

Update 378: Barbaro vigil: 7 pm (eastern) tonight. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, have some thoughts for Barbaro.

Peter told me today about a time he was breezing Bobby before his first start. He was to breeze Bobby in company with a four year old filly, on the wood chip track. The four year old was a group winner in South America. Peter decided to spot her two lengths. Bobby breezed by her and opened up ten lengths. Peter wanted to push Bobby a little as he had done everything so easily before (on the bridle). This was his last breeze I think before his maiden win under Jose Caraballo.

A two year old I have been galloping for Paul Rowland ran a nice third today at Monmouth: Big Daddy Wolf.

Update 377: I went with Peter Brette to New Bolton around lunchtime. Peter visited Barbaro, I hung out and took pictures of the lobby area and entrance. Barbaro remains comfortable, I will post more on the visit and a few additional insights I picked up with my conversations with Peter later.

Gator Nation was a first time starter for Tim today in Philadelphia Park. He was a little fractious in the paddock (I think Amanda is a little worse for wear for the experience) before the race. He ran a very good race, closing very strongly to finish third, only beaten a head I think for second. This was the first race for new owners of Tim's, so I think everyone is very happy. I have ridden Gator Nation only 2 - 3 times, but I have breezed with him several times, while being on other horses. It has been fun watching him progress in his work outs. For the most part he has always worked well, so it is good to see him reproducing that in his first start. Tim said he ran a winning kind of race, he was just a little green.

Pamela, I have Michael on the Trainer Alert on DRF.COM. It tells you when he enters a horse and later the result of the race. If you put a horse on HOrse Alert it tells you when they have a workout, when they are entered in a race, and the result of the race.

It is great to hear that Bobby remains comfortable! He will be in my thoughts and prayers at 7 pm tonight. Thanks for the updates and interesting stories, Alex, much appreciated!

Thanks Alex...Gatornation made such a tremendous move...It got my heart pumping...I agree that it is just the green in him showing (re his third/almost second finish ...But what a move he made...that was special!

Sounds like Gator has a nice future! Will have to add him to my Alerts.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 5, 2006 7:26 PM

Alex, thanks so much for the update. Can't wait to hear more about your visit to NBC and your conversations with Peter. I wish you could have gone in to see Barbaro. You deserve it with everything you've done here by building this wonderful community of love and support for him. Again, I will never be able to express in words how truly grateful I am to you and Tim for this website, and all the effort I know you put into it...you're truly a special person!

Congratulations to Tim and Gatornation! Atta boy!

BTW Alex, what exactly is a "hot walker?" Hope that question doesn't have you rolling your eyes? :)

Posted by: Sandie at August 5, 2006 7:26 PM

Sorry...that question was for Lynda...

Incase anyone missed it in the last update section, an interesting article I posted earlier on the NJ Equine Center. NBC is mentioned in the article:

http://www.nj.com/printer/printer.ssf?/base/news-8/1154752076242710.xml&coll=1

The chief surgeon was at the Preakness helping to attend to Bobby.

Posted by: Ruth Ann at August 5, 2006 7:28 PM

I'm glad Gatornation had a safe trip. Hey being beaten for second isn't bad. I know he's a maiden but I his turn will come.

I kinda sorta you knew you wouldn't be able to visit Barbaro but please tell us what saw and heard. What it felt like.

Best of luck tomorrow with your other horse. I hope he also has a safe trip.

Will be anxiously awaiting your next update with more insights gleaned from your visit to NBC today. Any news about front hooves still being cold, I hope? Is he still eating well? Will be watching ESPN for the "obligatory Barbaro update" during the race this afternoon. Hope they give more info and more than the brief glimpse of him on last week's airing!

Thanks again, Alex, for keeping us all posted.

LONG LIVE BARBARO!!!

Pam, yea, its called "watches" Sorry about that.

Crud. I am trying to get into mine and I have forgotten my login name and password. Make sure you write it down!!!

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 5, 2006 7:35 PM

A hot walker is someone who walks the horse around following a race or workout in order for the horse to cool down. Usually they will walk perhaps around the shed row (barn) area for a while. The horse will have access to water and will cool out properly. Anyone who exercises hard then sits right down, human or animal, will be still from lactic acid buildup in the muscles.

Alex & Tim--if you have to close down the comments section because of people's behaviors here, please don't stop the updates section on Bobby. You are our only link to know, on a daily basis, how Bobby is doing.

Congrats on Gator Nation. What's his pedigree?

Posted by: Kim Curtsinger at August 5, 2006 7:36 PM

Alex, so glad that you were able to visit NBC!
My true wish is that you will be able to make a visit, even if it is short, with Barbaro. You really deserve it. You are responsible for alot of his recovery. You may not think so, but there has been a lot of positive energy directed towards him, the staff, Doctors, Connections, etc...because of what you and Tim have done here. Thank you, words will never EVER be enough.

Did we ever hear any updates about Bobby's hotwalker being able to visit with him?

Posted by: Laura in Key West at August 5, 2006 7:36 PM

Pamela

They will send you an e-mail when the horse is entered and another on race day

Posted by: ShelleyA at August 5, 2006 7:37 PM

Sandie - I know you posed this question to Alex, but I was here and thought I'd answer you in case Alex doesn't get back to the board for a while.

A "hot walker" is a little Merry-go-Round type thing (for the lack of a better way to describe it) that walks your hot (after exercise, a horse is hot) horse for you. And with this device, you can walk a few at one time, while you tend to other chores about the barn. You hook your horse's lead to the walker and turn it on and the horse walks around in circles until they are cooled down. Hope this helps!

Take care!

Thanks for the update, Alex, and I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures and hearing more about the visit.

I'll be watching Gator Nation's progress very closely now :-)

I clicked on the links for all the horses that you have in training or racing but there is only a picture of Luke. He's a cutie and I love him(my son's name is Luke!) but it would be nice if there were pictures of the other horses too...unless there are and I just haven't found them.

Am I looking with my eyes closed as usual?

Now that things have thankfully calmed down on this site, I wanted to thank Alex and Tim again for all of the wonderful info. Congrats to Tim on Gator Nation, and I look forward to hearing Alex' thoughts after the trip to New Bolton. I will be thinking of our beautiful boy at 5 PM MST.
P.S. A funny aside. This week I tried going to one of the websites mentioned for Barbaro tshirts. Instead of getting in to the site, a big message came up on my screen (I was at work) saying WARNING - YOU ARE TRYING TO ENTER A GAMBLING SITE. YOUR INTERNET USE IS BEING MONITORED. Needless to say, I freaked out! Went to confess to my boss (a great guy) the next day, and he laughed and told me not to worry - unless I make it a habit to gamble on-line at work. So, now even my boss knows I'm a
Barbaromaniac (and I still have a job).

Kim & Sue, thanks for the answer. I've wondered about it for a while and had an idea it was something along those lines. Thanks for clearing it up for me. I appreciate all the horse people on this site so much. I've learned so much and want to continue learning everything I can as I love these animals with a passion!

To cindy a :
I typed Black Ruby racing mule into my MSN space. It produce quite a few sites with reference to her BR's name. One very interesting one, in particular, is AMRA Mule related Links.
I also found a facinating site that has to do with EQUINE CLONING. IDAHO GEM is the first cloned mule. He is the generic brother TAZ,who raced with 14 year old Greatest-of-All-Time-Racing Mule, BLACK RUBY. It says female mules are the fastest racers.

I'm sure this question has been here before. What is the VF on Barbaro's blanket? it does not match Fair Hill FH or Lael Stables LS. Just curious.

Another question from yesterday that never got answered. Years ago and sonetimes now you see a horse wear a kind of mask looking thing on their face when they are racing...what is that for? I remember years ago they all wore them.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at August 5, 2006 7:44 PM

I'm not sure if my post went through. Once you have your Virtual Stable set up, they will send you e-mail notifications when the horse is entered, again on race day and then a result notification. Just make sure your preferences are all set up correctly.
Also, you can go to equibase.com and get entries or results from any track. Look down the left hand column. It's all free

It was on YouTube, but now it says it's not available because of "copyright infringement". I loved it because there was audio with Peter talking to Bobby. I think you'll find Virtual Stable easier to use. That's what most of us use.

Sandie

About the hotwalker. The machines are usually used in the morning for exercise.
After a race, the horses are hand walked. They must see how they came out of the race and to stop and give them water as they walk the shedrow.

Renee

You are referring to blinkers. They are used on some horses that need help focusing or that get spooked. There are different size eye holes on the blinkers. It depends on the horses needs.

here is a poem I made up for Barbaro,

Beautiful Soul
The race was on, Barbaros stride was gallant and steadfast,
then seconds and minutes stopped in time,
tragedy bestowed, our hearts felt low.
Our Bobby Boy No!
The world stood still in awe and watched, as Bobby fell to the ground.
Angels sent from above heard the cries and woes,
They sent Mr. Prado courage and strength, to handle this crisis amongst our midst.
Stanima and courage embraced us all, please Barbaro, don't leave us now!
The Bolten Center worked hard and decisions were made, how to save Barbaro from this fate, some might have thought is was to late.
Our Beautiful Barbaro, hold on Dear Boy!
As there is still a place in this future with you.
Don't give up, have pride in what you do, be steadfast and true, you will pull through.
Bobby did make it through this whole ordeal,he showed us what life is really about.
Barbaro's strong will to live and his ability to beat all odds,
The sparkle in his eyes are like the stars above.
All of the angels are saying,"Shine on Barbaro, you are so full of love. You are a beautiful soul that everyone knows and loves."

ACTION ALERT! S. 1915

INT'LFUND4HORSES.ORG

AUGUST IS A SIZZLING TIME TO LOBBY YOUR SENATORS ON HORSE SLAUGHTER

Through the month of August, we are asking that you contact both of your Senators in their local District Offices to co-sponsor S.1915. (S. 1915 is the companion bill to H.R. 503, banning horse slaughter).

There are many advantages.

Your Senators can focus on the issues that are important to you without the numerous distractions of Washington. Pro-slaughter lobbyists can easily make the rounds in Washington; not so easily when the action is local. You have your Senators on your home turf. If you actually want to meet with your Senators, your chances of doing so are much greater at the District Office. You will of course need to make an appointment. Lastly, it is more convenient to you.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE

America's horses need you to act quickly to get your Senators to support S. 1915 by co-sponsoring it.

We simply cannot wait until Congress reconvenes in Washington to start rallying support for the Senate version of the bill. With additional time off for mid-term elections, there will be precious little left before the end of the year to get S. 1915 discharged from Committee and onto the floor of the Senate for a vote. Let's get the momentum going now.

STEPS TO TAKE

1. Compose Your Message
Jot down or type out your thoughts about how you feel about horse slaughter and why you want it stopped. If you are a horse owner, or have had a special experience with horses, please mention this.

Type or write out the final version of your message. Be sure to include the bill number, S.1915, in your subject or reference line.

Remember to ask that they please co-sponsor S.1915 right away and vote YES for it.

If you would like a response, please be sure to mention this.

Once you are happy with your message, you are ready to go to Step 2.
2. Find Out Who Your Senators Are

Everyone has two Senators representing them in Washington.

To find out who your Senators are, go to this link. You will see a list of Senators for "All States." Use the drop down box to select your state. You will see the names and contact information for you two Senators.

If you click on a Senator's name, it will take you to their website where you can find the District Office local to you. Here you will find the information you need to telephone, fax, hand deliver a letter, or make an appointment to visit. You are ready for Step 3.
3. Contact Your Two Senators

Write or type out your letter, preparing one for each Senator. They can be exactly alike if you want. Need a template for laying out your letter? Click here. (see second example)

If you know either of your Senator's leanings on this issue, you may want to adapt your letter to address them.

Mail, fax or best of all, hand deliver your letters.
That's it!

TELEPHONING

If you choose to telephone, compose what you want to say and rehearse it until you feel comfortable. When calling, state what you are calling about, mention the bill number (S.1915), and do not hang up until the person you are speaking with has taken your name and address. Otherwise your call will not be logged. If the Senator is in the office the day you call, it will be very busy, so if the person you are speaking with sounds rushed, please very politely ask them to read your information back to you. Explain that this is a very important issue to you.

SPREAD THE WORD

Send this email to at least 10 of your friends. It is still very likely that they do not know about horse slaughter, and they may want to help.

Unlike the House where you have one Representative, and your neighbor across the road could be in a different District with a different Representative, everybody in your state has the same two Senators. So, this is a great opportunity to gather up as many letters from friends, colleagues and neighbors as you can in support of this issue. Imagine what an impact this could have.

We will be sending as many lobbyists to Washington D.C. the first two weeks of September as we can afford. Their mission will be to (i) visit every House office reminding them to vote YES for H.R. 503 on September 7th, and (ii) visit as many Senators as possible the remainder of the time to gain co-sponsors for S. 1915.

For the love you have for BARBARO!!! DO IT FOR HIS SAKE, FOR THE HORSES YOU LOVE, FOR ALL THAT NO ONE LOVES, FOR THE GREAT CHAMPIONS IN HEAVEN !NO HORSE deserves to be murdered.**** Our precious Barbaro IS healing! By God's grace and the talent he gave the Drs. and staff @ NBC. KEEP PRAYING!!!

Just catching up on some posts. So glad to see some people using Equibase, it really is a great tool, and an asbolute must have for the horse racing fan.

For those of you setting up your virtual stable for the first time, After you have added your new horse, don't forget to set up your feeding/excercise schedule for them, or they won't be able to race.

So sorry,lol...ofcourse I am kidding about the feeding and excercising, but I just couldn't resist!! Have fun everyone!

When we had the first vigil, the candles went to over 1,000. I hope we can get it back up again. Remind everybody that they only last 48 hours. I have now put a "Light a Candle for Barbaro" link on my main page with a reminder to everyone that they only last 48 hours so refresh them often.

I have fixed the site where comments can be made.

Tim, Alex and Gator nation, congrats!
I tried to catch it on TVG, but they switch back and forth between tracks so much, I missed it when I went outside to try to salvage my plants in this suffocating heat.

I believe, for the T-shirts you make a donation and tell them you did, and then click the link with your email. Seems like there is no charge at that site, E. Corvino just wants to give something back.

Just so you know...

Vintage Farms is Michael Matz's farm. Some of the photos you'll see at NBC will say VF on them (on Bobby's halter). He was wearing a generic halter (think basic farm halter). At some point they must have brought his back to him cause on the later photos at NBC (not the first couple of days) show Barbaro on them.

When hotwalking--slow walking is the absolute best. It allows the horse a chance to catch his breathe. Each time as you walk in a big circle (or around the barn) you allow the horse a few sips of water. You never allow him to plunge his nose into the bucket and drink all he wants. That will cause colic.

After morning works and race day the horse is given a bath to wash out all that sweat. You can use a "sweatscraper" to dry him and then a towel. But you walk until the horse is cool and dry. By the time he is and you put him back in his stall he shouldn't be terribly thirsty.

Posted by: Pamela at August 5, 2006 8:18 PM

Has anybody seen this when they do a google search on Barbaro?

"Why Barbaro Needs Arthrotol™?

Here are a few reason why Barbaro needs Arthrotol™.

Speeds up recovery time from injury:

Arthrotol™ provides alternate cellular energy, A.C.E. This in support of the immune system. A major role in keeping Barbaro healthy.

Enhances and Transports Nutrients:
Arthrotol™ enhances the availabilty of nutrients and makes them more absorbable. It also allows minerals to regenerate and prolongs the residence time of essential nutrients. Arthrotol™ readily complexes with minerals making them available and easily absorbable through cell walls. Arthrotol™ can even dissolve and transport vitamins, coenzymes, hormones, and natural anitbiotics. So whatever supplement, vitamins, etc. Arthrotol™ will help make them more effective.

Natures Most Powerful Electrolyte:
Arthrotol™ is an organic electrolyte that can balance and energize biological properties it comes into contact with. Research shows that when reintroducing electrical potential, the cell reconstructed and became active and healthy again. This is very simple, Barbaro can become healthy again and stay that way!"

Is it as good as they say and, if so, do we know if Bobby is getting it?

Jo

Monica, My thoughts are with you and Sluggo (great name). Our first dog survived surgery for bloat/GDV as well as hemangiosarcoma, both of which are usually fatal, thanks to a great neighborhood vet and the vet school at Colorado State Univ. The vets there told us they thought that our dog did as well as he did because he was so well loved and cared for (come to think of it, that probably applies to Barbaro, too). I hope for the same for Sluggo.

Has anyone researched how many horses are actually taken within the U.S.?

We are trying to bring awareness to the issues and solutions via horse rescue operations,& find funding for support of unwanted horses.

Alex- Thanks for keeping us posted on the horses there - GO GatorNation!

Dr R said back on July 13 that they were looking at all reasonable nutrients. That people had been sending them so much stuff that it would push Barbaro from his stall just to store it.

There was talk that they were using something called A-Cell but then it wasn't mentioned again.

I just know that Dr R seemed like he wouldn't dicuss treatment protocol citing patient/owner confidentially issues.

Mostly have no fear. This vet is one of the best in the country. What he doesn't know he has the resources to help him. Resources are other vets, books whatever will help him. He has written a number of articles on the thins he's dealing with.

Chad

Do you know how to find notes that people post for you, without having to scroll through everything?

Try this. Hopefully you have the right kind of computer program, and this will work for you.

1. Click on "Edit" in the upper left corner of the window.

2. In the drop-down menu that appears, click on "Find (on this page)".

3. In the little window that appears, after the words "Find what", type in your name, Chad -- or any other word that you want to search on the page.

4. Click "Find next", in the upper right corner of the little window.

The page will then jump to the first mention of your name, which will be highlighted so you can see it easily. You can read the post and then click "Find next" again, for the next post with your name in it.

Don't worry if it gets a little messed up after you read the post; just keep clicking "Find next" until you get to one you haven't read yet.

Hope this is useful.

FYI: My post below is spiritual. If you are not of that mindset, please SCROLL past. There is a planned "vigil", announced by Alex, for tonight at 7pm east coast time, for Barbaro's sake. The very nature of a "vigil" implies prayer, meditation, affirmations, etc.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"When we understand that Infinite Mind is the Ruler of the universe, that every idea of God is forever in its proper place, that no condition or circumstance can arise whereby a mistake can find lodgment in God's plan, then we have the complete assurance that God is capable of adjusting everything as it should be. The fact is that all things are already in their rightful place; that no interference or lack of adjustment can really occur. It is only to the unenlightened human sense that there can be any such thing as discord. God's universe is always in perfect adjustment, and all His ideas work together forever in perfect harmony....The discord which seems to be apparent is only what mortal mind believes, whether it be sickness, discomfort, annoyance,or trouble of any kind. ...There is no such thing as failure in the Divine Mind. God is never defeated, and those who stand with Him will always receive the benefits of a victory over error." --Adam H. Dickey
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, -- neither in nor of matter, -- and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well."
--Mary Baker Eddy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. ...Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth, and it was restored whole, like as the other." --Matthew 12:10,13
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thank you God, for the manifestation of Barbaro's healing. He has never been and cannot ever be outside of your Loving protection. Thank you that each and every day, his complete restoration is unfolding before our human sense. In You, Barbaro lives, and moves, and has his being.

NEWSFLASH: From the Daily Herald News Aug 5, 2006

Race track cleared, consultant to test tracks base
State announces second consultant will test the base of Arlington Parks track
By Joseph Ryan
Daily Herald Staff Writer
Posted Saturday, August 05, 2006
State regulators said Friday they will test the base of Arlington Parks track for the first time since horses started suffering an unusually high number of catastrophic leg injuries while racing this year.
The move comes after the first outside analysis completed on the tracks safety was tainted by meetings between Arlington executives and a state-hired expert.
On Friday, the state cleared Arlington executives and the consultant, Gregory Coon, of any wrongdoing following a weeklong investigation.
Nevertheless, the circumstances of his interaction with Arlington Park called into question the independence of his evaluation, said Illinois Racing Board Commissioner John Simon in a statement.
Coon met with Arlington president Roy Arnold after his track inspection in mid-July and divulged the positive results, Arnold has said. Coon, he said, also later sent recommendations for track alterations and maintenance. The racing board was not formally informed of either issue.
Simon said in his statement that the racing board determined the recommendations were not safety related.
Coon has not returned phone calls seeking comment. Arnold has called the matter a big misunderstanding.
The racing board is in its second month of an ongoing investigation of leg injuries to horses that race at Arlington.
Such injuries are relatively common in racing, but have been occurring at an accelerated rate at Arlington this racing season. Since May, 18 have suffered such injuries while racing, causing them to be euthanized. Last year, 12 such injuries occurred at the track throughout the entire season.
State regulators stress that there is currently no evidence the track is causing the injuries. Some trainers and owners say it is just a statistical anomaly, and others say trainers are pushing their horses too hard.
Arlington officials have also defended the safety of their track.
We have always and will continue to work cooperatively to make sure we do what is right for the industry and to ensure safety, Arnold said Friday.
Both Coon and a track-hired expert have taken samples of the tracks surface and depth and determined the track to be safe. Yet, no outside expert has fully evaluated the limestone base.
Arlington regularly checks the base at the end of each racing season. Arlington executives say they checked parts of it again in early July without outside experts and found it to be sound.
The state said Friday it hired a consultant who uses high-tech sonar and pressure-measuring equipment to check the limestone base as well as the sand and clay cushion and pad.
Mike Peterson, a mechanical engineering associate professor at the University of Maine, said he will conduct his tests next week.
Peterson recently completed tests on the Del Mar racetrack in California, which saw seven catastrophic injuries in just the first few days of its racing year. Peterson found nothing wrong with that track.

I've been to visit him three times but I'm way overdue for a visit. I'd love to get there before the summer is over. Need my Smarty fix!!!

Have never seen any of his babies in person yet.

Posted by: ShelleyA at August 5, 2006 9:12 PM

Shelly A - you must try and see one of the babies - how cute are they all? I couldn'f figure out which one I liked best - I'll just take them all!!! When you see Smarty - give him a kiss and hug for me - he has been my favorite until I saw Bobby. So now Bobby is #1 and Smarty is #2. Don't tell Smarty!!

SHELLY A...just looked at Smartysgift.com and couldn't access the pictures.
What am I doing wrong?

Okay I am new to horse racing & this site has educated me so much! Thanks to all for this.

I just went to the suggested site(Three Chimneys) to view Smarty Jones' foals.
Three Chimneys looks like a massive farm. Can anyone explain all of this to me? Are their alot of these farms around? What are the best? Alot of littler operations? I'm intrigued by this...
Thanks!

I can't wait until Fall 2008/Winter 2009. Some of Smary Jones foals are bound to be racing and let's hope Barbaro's baby brother is too. It will make things interesting. Hopefully, a couple of years later we will see Bobby's foals racing.

Thanks. The quality of the pictures isn't very good cause many were taken in the stall and the light was not good. But it was such fun. And you should have seen how long it took to get the one with the sunglasses on....he kept flinging them at me!!!

Monica: Special prayers sent out to you and Sluggo. My lab Chip survived surgery for Bloat/GCV about 5 years ago, and then survived surgery for a twisted spleen about 2 1/2 years ago. The small animal hospitals at the University's are very good. Keep the faith, but I know how hard it is to see our 4-legged babies in pain.

To my extended Barbaro family, please keep in mind what is important to all of us. Losing this site would create such a void in all of your lives.

Beautiful Barbaro, you continue to amaze us all. We hope you have a nice relaxing bath today and maybe if you don't nip too hard, you'll get a little message. I bet you love to see Peter, Michael and your mom stop by and spoil you for a few minutes each day.

I hope you are enjoying all of your treats and are spreading a few hugs and kisses to all of the doctors and nurses who are taking such good care of you.

As I said a couple of weeks ago, we all lost our way for awhile, but you've given us all something to focus on. Rest well Beautiful Boy and know that we are all sending positive and healing thoughts your way.

Believe in Miracles,
Believe in Barbaro.

Thanks Alex for continuing update as our main lifeline man!!
BABARO; keep healing!!!
Rest this evening & enjoy all the hugs & love!

Thank you Alex for Peter Brette's story about how Barbaro's strength is so much a part of him as he heals that hoof (Barbaro Nation saying rest, heal legs, grow healthy hoof)...
Marky, Mary, Lyn, thanks for your stories & poems

To Linda A. in Oregon, and other poets sending how Barbaro has affected you...Thank you!!! We could not have done the poems and verse without consulting our Barbaro first. He is a major influence on everybody's lives including you "tough guys" (like me Wm says) out there. It is great to see others gents on this board too!!

So, wives get your hubbies to comment. We want to hear what they have to say...its important for Barbaro's healing process. There IS NOTHING WRONG expressing your inner thoughts briefly how Barbaro's impacted your family's life. Believe us -- it's a whole lot healthier to talk here than wasting your money on a therapist.
Great chance to help each other! These past few weeks have brought greater understanding and compassion about what thoroughbred champions and jockeys endure that any place else!!!

So men, come in, and feel free to express yourselves too!!! Think Alex is trying to tell us its okay to have strong feelings about our horses and special animal best buds!!!

Since our family -- a generation before -- was Delaware's Horse Racing Commissioners, we find this is our time to help positvely change horseracing's face and direction. United, can we make it so everyone can enjoy the sport once again. By helping Barbaro, we help our humanity to never forget what goes around comes around! Jockeys and Champion thoroughbreds deserve our respect!!

Read where California's Horse Racing Board is now taking positve action to replace
dirt tracks with synthetic ones at Hollywood, San Anita, Delmar, Los Alamitos, Bay Meadows, and Golden Gate in months to come. But this is not soon enough as witnessed by 17 fatal breakdowns at Chicago's racetracks in July alone. Horatio Nelson should never had to leave us.

We have the means to stop it!
Congress needs to see we won't stand for any more fatal injuries.

Please grandparents, husbands, wives, parents, boyfriends, and girlfriends (all US citizens), take a moment to help make a positive difference by stopping into www.campaignforbarbaro.com and clicking on the mission sidebar. It takes you directly to the
petitiononline.com where your electronic vote counts. We have over 521 signatures now including extra 140 under #411, so keep those votes coming for Barbaro's effect to make his difference -- safer, better futures are his, yours, and next generations!

We can no longer say "that's horseracing."

Tell your story there of what Barbaro means to you and how he is changing your life!!!
You'll already find some PRETTY AMAZING TRUE STORIES WORTH READING!!!Barbaro will thank you to when you visit nodding his approval with a bow and a wink!!!

Continue bonding on the message board with LOL to keep spirits uplifted!
EVEN BARBARO HAS A LIGHTER SIDE (so we see giving shoulder lovebites when noone's looking)!

Nice people there on the phone...I just had to cancel my visit due to a business trip.

I kind of owe Smarty alot, since my Dad passed away during his bid for the TC....and he helped ease the pain...So have to go see him!! And of course, he was from my home base, Philly Park!!!

***JOB APPLICANT***

A local business was looking for office help. They put a sign in the window saying:
HELP WANTED
Must be a good typist and be good with a computer. Successful applicant must be bilingual. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.
A short time later a lovely bay horse trotted up to the window, saw the sign and went
inside. He looked at the receptionist and nodded his head, then walked over to the sign, looked at it, whinnied and pawed the air.
The receptionist called the office manager. He was surprised, to say the least, to see a horse applicant. However, the horse looked determined, so he led him into the office. Inside, the horse laid down and stared at the manager expectantly.
The manager said, "I can't hire you. The sign says you must be able to type."
The horse jumped up, went to the word processorr and proceeded to quickly type a perfect business letter. He took out the page and trotted over to the manager, gave it to him, then laid back down.
The manager was stunned, but told the horse, "That was fantastic, but I'm sorry. The sign clearly says that whoever I hire has to be good with a computer."
The horse jumped up again, went to the computer and proceeded to demonstrate his expertise with various programs, internet marketing, and produced a sample spreadsheet and database; then presented them to the manager.
The manager was dumbfounded! He said to the horse, "Hey, I realize that you are a very intelligent applicant and have fantastic talent, but you're a horse -- no way could I hire you."
The horse trotted over to the sign in the window and pointed his hoof at the words, "Equal Opportunity Employer."
The exasperated manager said, "Yes, I know what the damned sign says. But the sign also says you have to be bilingual."
The horse looked him straight in the eye and said, "Meow."

Yes, Three Chimneys has one tour for the public a day at 1PM and it is booked way in advance. They probably stop booking in October because breeding season starts in February. Not sure if they have the tours during breeding season.

You're not in the Philly area anymore, are you. I think we discussed this before but I don't remember where you are now.

I hate to keep bothering you about this but again ....

A video link you gave us a few weeks ago, Barbaro training at Fair Hill, was so good. I saved the link, but can't access it anymore. It was on YouTube, but now it says it's not available because of "copyright infringement". I loved it because there was audio with Peter talking to Bobby. I know how busy you are, but is there anyway to get it back?

I think some other posters have also asked about it also.

Questions Alert!!

Does anyone know if track announcers are based at a certain track or if they travel to do the big races. Seems that I always see the same names or I have a bad memory and keep watching races at the same track.

Also, wasn't there supposed to be a Bobby update during the race today? Did I blink and miss it?

Posted by: Debbie B. from Miami, Fl. at August 5, 2006 10:02 PM

I have no idea what happened to the great Fair Hill training thingy for Barbaro. I am sad it has gone. Sorry.

Quick rant: ESPN did not cover Bobby, and I assume it was because the schedule yet again got squeezed. Its a shame our sport is not considered a priority as it is in other countries ... it was nice to see Ouija Boards win, a much better run race than the Test Stakes I think, which was a ridiculous speed dual (44 and change first half, 14 second last eighth). Congrats to Invisor for the Whitney win!

I even asked Rachel if Dr. R's mother lives in the area (his father passed, I think). I wanted to send HER a bouquet of roses on 8/30 to thank her for Dr. R... Rach doesn't know and I wouldn't want it to appear we are invading the woman's privacy...

I wrote to ESPN last time they did this. You're right. They ALWAYS have something running overtime and don't seem to consider horse racing a priority. I told them that if they can't run it on schedule, they should relinquish to another network. Got no response!!!

Some of you are lucky to get horseracing channels. I live in a big city and do not get one. I wrote to my cable company twice and they have never responded.

Posted by: Debbie B. from Miami, Fl. at August 5, 2006 10:27 PM

Alex, Shelley A,
I have to say, I AGREE about ESPN.
I have a few ESPNs (not sure what Cable everyone else is on, but in PTI and other shows, they say, Barbaro coming up, and then they break to something else. So I switch to ESPN2...NOTHING.
And my eyes are going a little batty from watching the scrollbar at the bottom of the screen.
My husband was watching with me last night, and a story was on he commented on...and I said..Huh? I was looking at the scrollbar for HORSE. Sorry, I don't consider Extreme BMX a major sport (not to offend anyone who does).
But Bobby's condition is just as major a story, in fact, I have MORE and MORE people asking me about him who have never watched a race.

Always,
Susan

And it must be a nice feeling to see a horse that you've been working with do so well :-)

Ouija Board's race was fantastic and I was on the edge of my seat. You can see by the picture how close it was, and it really was half a flared nostril! lol Credit also has to go to Alexander Goldrun who ran a brilliant race!

Are any of your horses running tomorrow? I do get some US racing on Sky but not sure what to look for.

I'm not sure here - my opinion - but I don't really think we are made at ESPN - I think we are mad because we just don't get enough Barbaro coverage. Thats how I feel!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 5, 2006 10:32 PM

Who ever asked, the TV announcers belong to which ever network is broadcasting the show.ESPN
in this case.ESPN is doing the road to the breeders cup,so you wil see them again tommorrow.Hopefully not cut short by football,
although who can cut Troy Aichman off in the middle of his Hall of Fame acceptance speech.?

Posted by: BrendaRyder at August 5, 2006 10:32 PM

Hi Everyone,

Please, cmon let's reach 1000 candles before the 7:00 pm vigil!

I will be lighting a real candle for Bobby tonight at 7:00 pm.

Bobby - ACN's Always and just keep HEALING, HEALING AND HEALING!

Love you Bobby!

Carol

Posted by: Carol at August 5, 2006 10:32 PM

Brenda I agree on the Troy Aikman comment - he was so humbled and emotional I just had to watch. I'm a huge Cowboys fan and have loved Troy - he deserved the Hall of Fame - it was a great speech.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 5, 2006 10:33 PM

I lit my candle on gratefulness.org a little early. I'm afraid if we all go there at once, it will crash or something!

Posted by: ShelleyA at August 5, 2006 10:34 PM

Hey guys...I enjoyed reading about the racetrack at Arlington, Wm & CL...I can't wait to hear of the results of the new tests...

I really was disheartened to see Troy Aikman in stead of my horsey buds...Good grief...you'd think that ESPN had better sense than to feature a dull Hall of Fame induction ceremony than the Sport Of Kings...how insulting...how boring!

I wonder how Mike C. did today with his ambush of Edgar Prado...I hope he was successful...I am sure that Edgar would love his call...

Love the Smarty Jones pics...I think photos like these really capture the intimate nature of the relationship with this special horse...

DebbieB.
Have you checked the high channels? My TVG all day horse is on 605, but they have a lot of those infomercials on early.
I never even knew it was there til about a year ago. Never went that high. Somewhere between the golf 101 channel and something else.
Girl I'm in Kansas and get it and we don't even have racing here anymore (well, the Woodlands might open for a week)

Love,
Susan

INVASOR RAN WELL TODAY AT SARATOGA!! :>) NO BOBBY UPDATES THOUGH, MAYBE ESPN DOESN'T WANT TO DEPRESS PEOPLE?? THAT WAS CUTE WHEN INVASOR'S OWNER SAID HIS HORSE HAS MORE FREQUENT FLYER MILES THAN A LOT OF PEOPLE, SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

CAN I ASK A DUMB QUESTION? HOW DOES A HORSE FLY IN AN AIRPLANE? HOPE THEY HAVE SPECIAL HORSE SEATBELTS INCASE THEY DROP SUDDENLY. :>)

This is the link for the Barbaro group at the candle lighting site. The number is down to below a thousand - hopefully will climb back up during/after the upcoming vigil (less than a half hour away now).

Some people are lighting candles under the group name BARB and there are only like about 8 candles there - but I'm SURE those people intended to add their candles to the main Barbaro Group which is BARBA, not BARB.

Also there are groups for Mike (Rea), Dr. R, [Edgar] Prado, and Angel (which is for horses whose lives have been cut short). Click on "groups" on top, and all will be listed. Just lit a few for Sluggo the dog in intensive care, group name is SLUG. Also Walter the cat (WALT) - haven't heard about her in a while, wondering how she is doing.

The reason we don't get much Barbaro news is because the news is good - remember back in July - he was the top story on every news channel. Now that things are stable and there is some hoof growth and the right hind is healing - there is nothing to report. Little do these sports people know that there are thousands of us dying for info! That is why this site is so special. We get daily updates from Alex - without Alex - I'd be in DePoo!!!

Yeah Debbie - you need the dish. Laura in Key West has the dish so she has TVG - I have Comcast - no TVG. I think I'll call them and bug them to get it - maybe if all us Comcast people call and request it perhaps we would get it!!!

I don't watch the races anymore - but I do listen. I'm afraid to watch. First Barbaro then Gallant Secret - I just can't watch anymore. I always wanted to go to Calder but never had the chance - I'm not sure I want to now!

Just me being scared.

Evening all!

I've got my candle ready to go. Got in awhile ago from my CEU (continuing ed class) for my massage license: wore my beautiful "Believe in Miracles Believe in Barbaro" shirt which Ernie so graciously made and sent! Thanks again, Ernie! The instructor of the class stopped and asked how Bobby was doing and I filled everyone in and got to give a short, impromptu equine anatomy of the leg talk - relating to the injuries. It was pretty cool!

Afterwards, I went to get my oil changed and got several nods & smiles. Bobby's got so many rooting for him! Made me feel very good!!!

Alex, thanks again for all you do. You're a very special soul!

Well, need to run downstairs to light my candle & have a few quiet moments to send my thoughts to our brave warrior. Will check in later.

Love to all,

Julie Z.

Posted by: Jeri at August 5, 2006 11:20 PM

Alex - glad for the afternoon update. Who could ask for anything more? Time IS on our side, and the Miracle in Progress continues.

In the September issue of Horse Illustrated (apparently this piece is not online, though there is a horseillustrated.com site) under the section "Vet Files" (beginning at p. 26), is the following at p. 28, which credits Barbaro with the increased action for track surface safety; the story is entitled:

BARBARO'S MARK

He didn't make it to the final leg of this year's Triple Crown, but the now famous Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro may be impacting generations of racehorses for years to come. Some say the bay Thoroughbred's legacy will be his role in raising awareness of synthetic (polymer/all-weather) track surfaces to help reduce catastrophic injuries in racehorses.

Proponents of synthetic tracks argue that poor surfacing is a contributing factor to racehorse deaths and injuries. Barbaro suffered three broken bones in his right hind leg during the Preakness on May 20, and while the cause of his injury is unknown, media attention paid to the accident may be giving impetus to replace dirt racetracks with synthetic surfaces. The Preakness, the second leg of the Triple Crown, is held on a dirt surface at Pimlico in Baltimore, Md.

Claiming that Barbaro's injury was not a factor in its decision, on May 27 it was reported that the California Horse Racing Board gave final approval to regulations forcing the state's major Thoroughbred racetracks to make the switch to synthetic surfaces by the end of next year. Leading facilities across the country are considering the change as well. Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., installed synthetic surfacing in 2005. The track reported that in a comparable period, injuries resulting in horses being euthanized fell from 24 to three after the switch. Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky., is currently scheduled to complete resurfacing on its main track by October; its practice course already features a synthetic surface. [end of piece]

Thought you guys would like to know Barbaro is getting credit for this in a respected horse magazine, despite the disclaimers.

btw, Horse Illustrated is quite a good magazine for horselovers, whether or not you own a horse; featuring great pics, including a monthly feature of reader-contributed pics, on the last page before the back cover; there's one in this month's issue of a horse nuzzling a cat.

FYI - just now (on TVG, Racing Across America, on DirecTV 602), I saw the number 6 horse, Concert Master, break early from the gate, in the 5th race at Del Mar, and they just reloaded him in without anybody checking his gait, legs, soundness, or anything. Just reloaded him in a flash, and they were off. I thought after a false start there had to be some checking at least. What gives? Alex, anyone?

Well I must be doing something wrong. I tried to picture Bobby hanging out in his sling. That was okay until I started thinking something like "sending you good thoughts". Wow what a riochet! I felt like boing right off the bed! It wasn't pretty.

So I sat there and then said a little prayer. It was something like God, you know what I'm thinking. Please let Bobby get well so he can walk out of the hospital. He needs to regrow that bad hoof. And the right leg needs to fuse. We don't care if he can't stand at stud. All of us on the net may fight like cats and dogs but when you ask each of us where our heart is--its with this horse. It would be so unfair and unkind to the Jackson's after all of this. So please God let Bobby be okay.

I don't know about any of you. I know I felt a tad bit better. And I lit a candle. Not sure if that helped. In my Church growing up we never did vigils or lit candles. So this is still kinda new to me.

Alex I know you got really mad at us this morning and the truth is I was angry about some things yesterday. But yesterday is in the past. I'm really mucking this up. I'm trying to say thank you for being heavy handed this morning because it made everyone a lot kinder to each other all day. It seemed in this case that the mean (morning) justified the outcome (afternoon).

Michael's Miracle

Just finished meditating for Barbaro's healing. I kept having an image of the left side of his strong neck, up toward the mane.

Lyn Gilbert, what does that mean?

Then I fell asleep for a few minutes -- I'm in a migraine phase, so I can't lie down without falling asleep.

My son is here and he had gotten a Doc Watson performance video out from the library today, which he is watching. I woke up to that lovely riff at the beginning of Tennessee Stud -- my favorite Doc Watson tune. Seems like a good sign, no? :) I went out and watched that song with my son, and then came to report back...

So that was my vigil.

I just got back from praying for Barabaro.

I also prayed for forgiveness. I have been very upset about how some people here were attacked to the point that they left. Don't bother attacking me, this is my first time writing and I won't be reading anything but the updates. I was not part of the imagined clique. Not that I was surprised, These same heartless people attacked Mike Rea's family. They should have been stopped then. Who will they attack next?
So I have been reading today and I for one miss the vegetables and fruits. Is racing talk more appropriate than talk about nbc or how people cope with worries about Barbaro? So why is that not chat? Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with racing, but why do a few get to decide what we can or cannot read/write. I never saw Alex post rules against fun. I hope you make that chat room soon Alex. I'm looking forward to feeling upbeat again about Barbaro's situation. Dave and Chad you guys rock. Chad I am so proud of you. you gave me the courage to speak out. Rest and heal Bobby.

Heavenly Father.

We come to you this day as a large group, seeking healing for Barbaro. You called each of us to lift him up so that You can breath Your healing breath of life on his hind feet. The left one needs a new hoof and no infection or pain. The right one needs the bones to be perfectly knit together and strong. Jesus, please hold Bobby gently against your chest, touch each leg and foot with your hands, kiss his ears and give him the strength and the courage to win this race. Amen

Barbaro, I see you as I pray whole, healthy, bathed in sunlight, in command of your world and very happy.

Thank you Alex for allowing us this opportunity to meet and agree for Barbaros healing.

Remember everyone to go back an relight candles in 48 hours so we can keep all the light burning for Bobby, the Jacksons, Edgar Prado, Mike Rea and Dr. Richardson.

Posted by: Melissa at August 5, 2006 11:41 PM

Lou - so beautifully expressed. I second those sentiments absolutely. I would only add:

TIM and ALEX - because of your GENEROSITY AND DEDICATION, we are able to come together like this for the love of a horse.

Way to go Barbaro!
The miracle continues.

Dear Monica, I just read the posts about your Sluggo. I will add him to my prayer list and light a candle for him. Please take comfort in knowing that the Barbaro Nation has come together for Barbaro, but has supported members who have health issues, and some of us (me included) who have pets that are also in need of prayer and positive energy. You're surrounded by friends.

Margaret

I agree with you. After a rocky start, it turned out to be a good day. I think Alex taught us all a lesson
We'll never all agree....that's just not realistic but that's okay. Respect is the key.

Now, if I could impose on all of you good people, I have a favor to ask. Could you say a little prayer for my horse to have a safe race tomorrow. I am so creeped out about all of the injuries lately that I would appreciate a little help.

Thanks

NOT SURE IF THIS WAS ANSWERED EARLIER, TVG, I THINK, STANDS FOR TELEVISION GAMES NETWORK. TVG IS 405 HERE IN LA AND HRTV IS 404. I HAVE LEARNED ALOT ABOUT HORSES AND RACING FROM THESE TWO. AS FOR ESPN, WHAT HAPPENED TODAY HAS BEEN PRETTY MUCH THE NORM SINCE I HAVE BEEN WATCHING THE LAST FEW YEARS. AND THE BAD PART IS IF ESPN IS COVERING THE RACE TVG OR HRTV CAN'T SHOW THE RACE UNTIL ESPN DOES. GLAD FOR THE PRAYERS AND POSITIVE VIBES FOR BARBARO TODAY!

Adrienne,

Thank you so much for writing. I have a migraine from all of that yesterday, so am not posting too much today. I was a lowly underling in the posse -- NOT a clique, everyone was welcome. I think it's so cool that you got courage from Chad's post to write today. His post was so moving, and I was so sorry that we somehow failed him.

7 PM TONIGHT ... was devoted to Bobby!!

I lit the candle inside my "Secretariat Mug" and it blazed high and strong!!! Just a small little tea light ... I couldn't believe it!

I played Elvis' "You're So Young & Beautiful" and several other inspirational songs as I gazed at my framed photos of Bobby on my "Champions" wall ... I kept the vigil for about 45 minutes and it lifted ME up!!!

Thank you, Bobby, for your continued strength and inspiration to just keep on 'keepin' on' ... God Bless You, Dear Sweetness ... You are Such an Inspiration to Me!!

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH for who you are and what you represent ... your spirit transcends all 'beings' ... human, animal, planetary ... "You Raise Me Up!!"

Thank you!!

Dear Barbaro: We are praying for many more comfortable nights for you. We know it may be a longer journey than we had hoped for, but we are all here for as long as it takes.

Does anyone know if Dr Anderson has received anything from this group? I think we all cherish her updates so much, as she seems to be able to make Bobby come alive and take on human attributes. Is Fair Hill close enough so that Kennett Florist could deliver something to her?

If anyone knows the answer, and the answer is yes, I would be willing to send something to her from the group next week.

Also, is it time to to something at "The Whip" again for the Tim Woolley gang? Just a thought.

Sweet dreams baby boy.

SamIAm - RE Smarty's foals

Go to threechimneys.com/SmartyJones
Scroll down the right side of the page to where it says SMARTY JONES' FIRST FOALS and click there - you will see some wonderful pictures.

In CT I have HRTV on Dish Network (channel 404). I have Dish through AT&T if you're interested - you get much better pricing through them if they are your phone provider.

Christine - thanks for including me in Dr. R's gift - maybe that announcement should be posted frequently for (a) newcomers and (b) people who missed the original discussion and updates and (c) people who didn't say "count me in" but plan to be included...just a thought! I loved the idea of roses for his mom, too...maybe a staff person at NBC would be willing to be a spy?

Babaro Baby - I think of you always because you are "Champion of my Heart!" I'm glad you had a good day, and now is time to stop doing boing-boings and get ready for a night of restful, healing sleep. Know always how much you are loved and how many people pray for you - each in their own way!

What is meant about "failing Chad"? I can't read everything and I missed something important here. When he said his dog was named Smarty Jones, I send him messages at 2 different times with the link to the site to see Smarty's babys, and didn't hear anything...so I wondered if he just missed my message, and planned to post it again tomorrow am. Oh God, is he gone???

I lit a pear scented candle - on of my favourites - for my vigil tonite (hmmm.... all that talk about fruits & veggies...) and the scent is permeating throughout the house. I take that as a sign that Someone up there is listening to us!!!

Hope everyone has a wonderful & safe weekend!

I lit two candles for Alibi's safety tomorrow at Philly Park. I wish him good luck in the race.

It was clear from his post that he really valued the silly stuff. I think that it was helping with his reading skills, and also helping him to process his grief over Bobby. I just feel badly that we pushed it too far, I guess, and it all had to be dropped. It meant a lot to him, clearly. I don't think he's gone, just lurking; but I think the board will be harder for him to get through now that the silliness is out. You just never know who is benefitting from what, in life.

I came across the following article called "Update on Barbaro is positive"
link:

I'm not sure if the link was already posted if so, please bypass.

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/15195596.htm

Exactly 3 weeks after Dr. Dean Richardson presided over a news conference where none of the news about his patient was good, the news on Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro is about as positive as could be imagined.

At the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square on July 13, Richardson revealed that Barbaro had developed laminitis in his left hind foot, calling it "basically as bad a laminitis as you can have."

Imagine someone ripping off your big toenail. And then trying to grow it back. Laminitis is incredibly painful in horses and often fatal. Richardson did not try to kid anybody that day, saying that Barbaro's chances for survival were "poor."

Richardson and his staff, however, were not giving up. They treated the pain aggressively with a number of medications. They gave Barbaro round-the-clock care. The patient, who fractured his right hind leg in three places early in the Preakness and was a longshot to survive that, has responded again.

According to a statement released by New Bolton yesterday morning, Barbaro's "left hind hoof is slowly showing evidence of regrowth after surgery last month to treat laminitis. Laminitis occurs when laminae, the strong connecting tissues that attach the pedal bone and the inner hoof wall, are inflamed."

"The coronary band [the portion of the hoof that is responsible for continued downward growth of the hoof] is beginning to re-establish itself," Richardson said.

The left hind is encased in a foot cast that is changed daily. The right hind remains in a longer cast.

"The original fractures have apparently healed well, but the cast is necessary to protect the pastern fusion," Richardson said. "This protection is required because he must bear most of his weight on the right hind limb due to the laminitis in the left hind leg."

When he explained that Barbaro had developed laminitis, something that often happens when a horse bears too much weight on a "good" leg, Richardson also said growing back the hoof would take months. This has been only weeks, but so far so good.

With horses, good things often take quite a long time to manifest themselves, while bad things can happen in almost no time. That is what Richardson has fought since the Preakness on May 20. The surgeon and his team appeared to be winning for 6 weeks. Then, it looked as if they were losing. Now, they appear to be winning again. But this race is far from over.

Have a good snooze (sleep) barbaro you'll need to rest and gain your strength and heal the hoof (grow; grow; grow) and your leg.

GO BARBARO!!

WE BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!!

My kitties are alot smarter than I give then credit for. My kitty, Billy Barbaro, has to take pills everyday. So last night I gave him a pill and tonight when I went to get the pills - the container was open and empty. Now this is a child proof bottle - how they did this I have no clue. But when I went to vacuum a minute ago I found two that he had spit out. So he got one tonight and was very unhappy. I have one for tomorrow - hopefully I'll fnd the rest when I move the furniture tomorrow. I have 4 - so I don't know who is the guilty party - probably a team effort,

Alex: It's 8:17pm and I have finally managed to get my eyes dry from the Candlelight Vigil and Prayer Time. Although many thousands of us prayed and lite a candle in the privacy of our own surroundings, I felt a sense of togetherness during this very special time. I, myself shut off the TV, shut off all the lights, and lit my white candle which I had positioned next to my computer. I pulled up one of BARBERO's pictures from Barbara Livingston's site and had it displayed while her background music played. I knelt to my knees and prayed for our sweet boy and all those who have given so much to save his life. Each & everyone of them bring tears to my eyes each day because they give hope for humanity especially BARBERO! Our Sweet Angel is a living example of what each and everyone of us should be. Tonight, I just let go with the tears. I know that each and everyone of us are doing everything we can to help Barbero, but I'm always left with a sense of inadequacy because I don't feel personally I am doing enough. I just pray to God that BARBERO knows and feels the LOVE. Hopefully, one day, the Jacksons will give us the chance to admire BARBERO up close and personal. May God Be With Them All And Shine His Light Upon Their Faces And Give Them Peace ----AMEN

Into our lives has come, a special creature who has captured our hearts and souls.
Barbaro is his name.

Into our lives has come a hero who has raced against adversity and has shown us all how to win.
Barbaro is his name.

Into our lives has come an example of what is good and loving and who expects nothing in return except caring and kindness.
Barbaro is his name.

Into our lives has come a beautiful bay colt who is truely an old soul at heart.
Barbaro is his name.

Thought I would share the following article on the advancements of 'equine healing' hospitals in the last 10 -15 years. (apologies for the length)

There is a reference to the chief surgeon, Mr. Palmer, grew up with Mr. Matz outside of Reading, PA, and also referred Michael Matz to NBC rather than his own clinic.

Power of healing harnessed
New Jersey horse hospital is at the forefront as equine care gallops into the future

Link:
http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/index.ssf?/base/news-8/1154752076242710.xml&coll=1

Scott Palmer was sitting in the owner's box at the Preakness in May when he witnessed every horseman's nightmare: Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner, had shattered his right leg in three places.

"The leg was flailing in the breeze," said Palmer, chief surgeon at the New Jersey Equine Clinic, a 24-hour hospital for horses.

Palmer, however, doesn't recall any panic when the horse was taken off the track. Everyone, it seemed, was well prepared to handle the emergency.

A decade ago, it might have been different.

"Barbaro is an excellent example of how far we've come," said Liberty Getman of the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania, where Palmer referred Barbaro for surgery. "I hope the public realizes now that horses aren't put down just because they have a broken leg."

That Barbaro is still alive is evi dence of how much horse care has advanced over the last decade -- and the growing impact of places like the New Jersey Equine Clinic.

As the horseracing world turns to New Jersey this weekend for the Hambletonian and the Haskell Stakes, the ability to save injured racehorses from being euthanized is stronger than ever. This has had an immense impact on an industry in which the real money is in the millions of dollars in stud fees that owners can reap long after a horse's racing days are over.

Palmer has a ready response whenever someone asks him to describe the hospital where he works.

"We're just like a human hospital -- only bigger," he tells them. "It doesn't mean the size of the building. We do the same things, but it's just bigger. The anesthesia machines are bigger. The operating tables are bigger."

Those things need to be bigger when your patients weigh 1,000 pounds

Located on a 130-acre farm down a rural, twisty road in Millstone Township, the clinic has two operating rooms, a padded recovery room, a giant X-ray machine and 41 barn stalls.

The clinic moved to that spot in 1997 from a barn in the backyard of co-founder Fred Adams' home. It now treats about 3,000 horses a year. Most of his business is referral work -- appointment cases such as removing chip fractures or tumors, treating respiratory problems, or fixing hernias. But the clinic also treats at least a few emergency cases a week.

About 90 percent of those inju ries are sports-related -- with most affecting Thoroughbred or Standardbred racehorses.

"Equine surgery is an athletic event," Palmer said. "Not even four or five people can lift a 1,000-pound horse."

When a horse is ready for surgery, it's taken into a large area called the induction room, where the animal is placed against the wall, given drugs to knock it out, and held in place by a wooden door called a swing gate.

Then, with its legs tied together by a harness, the horse is turned upside down and lifted hydraulically on a moving chain to the operating table. Most surgery lasts about 30 minutes on average.

When the surgery is over, the horse is taken to a recovery room with padded walls and a soft floor.

"That's a very, very dangerous part of the surgery -- when the horse wakes up -- because they're groggy, frightened and disoriented," Palmer said.

Recovery was a big reason why Palmer referred Barbaro to New Bolton instead of his own clinic.

The horse's trainer, Michael Matz, grew up with Palmer outside Reading, Pa., and invited him to the Preakness to watch Barbaro race. When the horse suffered his injury, Matz immediately asked Palmer to evaluate Barbaro's condition.

Palmer helped splint the horse and decided its best chance for sur vival would be at New Bolton -- with its special equipment, like the much-talked about recovery pool, and state-of-the-art procedures.

"Once he's in the intensive care unit, they can just put him in a sling and move him to the surgery without him having to walk at all," Palmer said.

It's 8 a.m. and the crew at John Servis' barn at Philadelphia Race Park is in full work mode. Assistants are washing down horses and riding them gingerly around the stalls. And Servis, the trainer who brought champion thoroughbred Smarty Jones to national prominence two years ago, is reading a racing newspaper in his tiny office at the back of the barn.

Smarty's success came just a few months after the horse frac tured its skull on one of the start ing gates at the Philadelphia park, causing blood to gush from its nos trils and tissue to push out of its eye socket. The horse was shipped to the New Jersey Equine Clinic, where staff surgeon Patricia Hogan treated it, saving the horse's eye.

Less than a year later, Smarty had won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

Asked if he feels for Barbaro, knowing what he went through with Smarty Jones, Servis waved his hand in the air.

"Forget Smarty -- you feel for a horse like Barbaro just because of what he's going through," Servis said. "He's still got a long road ahead of him."

Servis' practicing veterinarian, Roger Clymans, knows how much things have changed since he was starting out in the early 1970s.

"When I first went to vet school, maybe 10 years before that, they didn't do joint surgery on horses," he said. "Now, they're starting to get into MRI. It's just beginning.

"A lot of the things they're using in human medicine filter down," he said, adding many doctors are using digital X-rays on horses -- something the New Jersey Equine Clinic utilizes.

The question now is whether owners can afford this much-improved medical care.

"For a lot of people, it comes down to: 'Do I save this horse, or do I send my daughter to college?'" Servis said.

Granted, treating a horse is "ridiculously cheap," Palmer said, in comparison to the cost of human treatment.

"An equine fracture might be $5,000 to treat," he said. "Whereas, if you went into a human hospital, it would be 10 times that to have the same thing done."

Still, getting the same kind of treatment given to Barbaro -- a horse worth millions because of his talent and prospective stud fees-- is costly.

"The owner has to be willing to make the financial commitment and the emotional commitment to consent to this treatment process," Palmer said.

Thanks for the reply. I think you are right. Now that you mentioned it, I do remember the comment that she thought Alex or Tim had sent them. I'll probably hold off until a little later in the week, but I'll try to remember to send something from all of us.

I don't recall how folks set up the tab at "The Whip" event last time, maybe someone else can respond.

Sweet Barbaro, hope you had a nice relaxing day with your bath and some special visits. Have a little snack before you go to bed and think of sweet dreams.

My heart is beating with Love ...

Well over 1,600 hundred candles from 13 countries have been lit in this Saturday Vigil to our Dearest Barbaro!!

There is NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER that this Sweetest and Strongest of 'beings' is going to WIN! He has the strength, the courage, the determination, the faith, but most importantly, the love of all of us who believe in him ... and "I'm A Believer!!"

GO BOBBY, GO ... The Triple Crown is a faded memory in comparison to what your legacy will be which transcends far beyond the race track! Your 'presence' illuminates so much more, and you know what your purpose here is, and it's already begun to manifest itself!!

I AM PROUD BEYOND PROUD OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT ... AFTER THE PREAKNESS ... AFTER THE FALL ...

Is this great or what?? CHAD!!!!

You remind me so much of Bobby. You are strong and smart and now you have new friends just like Bobby does. YOU GET TO RIDE A HORSE!!!!!! WAY COOL!

Today of all days, I think that you were sent to us by one of Bobby's angels. It was YOU CHAD, that put things into perspective for everyone.
You made everyone stop in their tracks just like Bobby does.

When Bobby gets out of the hospital alot of us are going to try to go to his hospital and welcome him out of there. Maybe someday we can all meet and finally get to see our pal Barbaro together. Keep that dream in your head.

Thanks Chad. You really do ROCK!

Hi everyone!

Here is a story I'd like to share. I sign every post as Ro & Brady. Brady is my crazy EXTREMELY smart cocker spaniel (English). Anyway, I had a very long week at work with extremely long hours (11+ in some cases). Of course, Brady assumed today was HIS day, but I had numerous errands to run, plus a hair cut appointment. Insult to injury, I had a glass of wine at the neighbor's. Well I get home, the fridge is open (mind all I live in NYC in a Landmark building, Pulman kitchens small fridges), he usually opens it just to get me, never takes anything out, but I guess everything was more than he coul tolerate, so he ate abut 4 ounces of Peccorino Romano cheese (which was obviously not properly closed).

What is funny is that when I looke at him his expression was " I needed to teach you a lesson about not spending enough time with me, but I don't think THIS was a very goog idea". Has been drinking oodles of water.

Spoke to vet. Not to worry, just let him sleep and drink it off.

I had to share this, no offense to anyone!

I hope your migraine is better! I get them too, so I know how awful they can be. Please take care and feel better.

My Walter is doing very well, thank you so much for asking. She does struggle a bit now when I give her her medicine (I can't blame her) and I am SO grateful for her ability to struggle! I was petting her during our Barbaro Vigil and she was talking up a storm. Maybe those were HER prayers for him. ;) I know all the collective prayers have helped make her well. I am so grateful to you and others in our Barbaro Nation who have sent prayers and healing thoughts our way.

Take care! Feel better!

Hi Debra B. Thanks for your response, sorry you can't make it but I thought it would be nice to wear a Barbaro T- shirt to a standardbreed race. I know alot of people there and we try to hook-up every year. Great time. Last year a 3yr old died coming out of the "Jug"champion race. Very Very sad. I sure hope it doesn't happen this year. It is the standardbreed's Kentucky Derby. The fillies race on Wed. and the Jug is Thursday. I have ask this before. How are the standardbreed tracks? Would like to follow up on them.

Hello everyone,

As in the first vigil, I once again drove to the cemetary to visit my father's grave. He was a hugh horse person. I asked him to join me in tonight's vigil.

Then I went to that same beautiful park, sat at a picnic table and said the rosary, read the "Prayer of St. Francis" and sent healing thoughts east to Pennsylvania. I thought about the hoof regrowing, the pastern fusing, the other hooves to remain healthy, and Barbaro to continue being comfortable, day after day.

As I do always, but particularly during this vigil, I felt my father's presence. Death has not separated the love my mother, brother, husband and I shared with him. Not at all. I know he too was sending prayers, love and strength to Barbaro.

Leslie - Just saw your post. I agree with you. With all the ugliness of the last few days, Chad was sent here to us for a reason. Let us all learn from him and be the better for it.

Posted by: Debbie B. from Miami, Fl. at August 6, 2006 1:07 AM

Just saw a new star in progress - 2 year old filly UNTOUCHED TALENT just won the 8th at Del Mar; jockey Victor Espinoza; trainer Jeff Bonde. The commentators compared her running style to Barbaro (gulp!) - but watching her I can see what they mean. She blew the field away. Uses her hind end tremendously for great propulsion. And seemed to enjoy it and do it all on her own. Trainer said she has always done everything right, whatever is asked of her. (Sound familiar?) Watch this little girl. 2 for 2 so far. I am impressed.

Just googled her, and found this piece in Blood Horse about her, written before this race; they had picked her to win. http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=34700

And the show must go on.

A peaceful night to Barbaro - he's one of a kind. May we awake tomorrow to news of Another Comfortable Night.

Hope Peace Love - CJ the craziest catlady (Blackie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

Bobby-sleep well, stay strong and heal well. You are so special and so loved. God bless you and those caring for you and bless all the Barbaromaniacs-you're a great group.

ALEX (I HOPE YOU REALLY READ THIS IN THE NEAR FUTURE): As far as the rude comments, the insensitive and degrading comments directed at others on this site, and the bickering over whose idea was whose when it comes to bracelets and other items being created in BARBERO's name with proceeds going to benefit Barbaro's care and the care of other less fortunate animals housed at NBC - I AM APPALLED!!! This is why the world is in the shape it's in - because of people who insist on being so self centered, greedy, and unfeeling of others. This site was created to honor BARBERO and all those who are giving so unselfishly to the care of BARBERO and to allow the love that the truly unselfish people out here want to relay to them and to OUR SWEET ANGEL, BARBERO!! SHAME ON YOU PEOPLE THAT ARE GUILTY OF THE NASTINESS. YOU DISGRACE EVERYTHING THAT BARBERO REPRESENTS AND EVERYTHING HE IS TRYING TO TEACH US. We are all supposed to be on the same side - who cares who designed a bracelet or a magnet, or a bumper sticker. The bottom line is that we are supposed to be raising funds for the benefit of BARBERO and others in their time of need - this is not a competition for recognition. I personally have come up with some ideas that I have mentioned on this site only to find out that others are using the same idea - SO WHO CARES?? Personally, I feel that there should be several vendors who are official sanctioned by the Jacksons and their team to manufacture official BARBERO items. Alex, maybe you can post a list of items that we as BARBERO BELIEVERS might be interested in purchasing and then take the top ten items which were voted on and then make them available to all of us. It's just a suggestion.

In closing, I am truly sorry if some of you have been offended but somebody had to say something to make those guilty of this bad behavior STOP AND TAKE A REALLY GOOD LOOK AT THEMSELVES. This world already has enough hypocrites...we don't need anymore!! Dear Ro & Brady,

I have only posted for the first time today, so I hope this is not going to be too chatty and personal, but your story is just toooo funny. It made me laugh so hard, and laughter is such an important part of life.We know Bobby is funny. He would smile at your story!
I have an extremely smart Golden Retriever, Cooper, who thinks every Sat. & Sun. are his days. Once I had work and alot of errands and came home to find out he had stolen my paperclip container and eaten all the paperclips. Yes, paperclips!!! Well, the doctor said not to worry because they would probably pass with feeding alot of bran, but x-rays showed he had chewed them up like gum before swollowing. Not to come up thru the scope, nor would they go down. Expensive operation. In my upset mode, I also agreed to have them tatoo him with my social security number while he was under, which I thought would be a small tatoo. But, nay, nay, everytime he lifts his right hind leg, it's an identity theft advertisement.
Again, I hope this post was not too long and personal, but I enjoy any and all posts here, and as always, I'm here praying and supporting the big boy, Barbaro.
Also hope Brady sleeps his cheese adventure off.

Hello again - I just wanted to add this little tid bit ...
Today I went to copy the picture I drew of Barbaro, I got cardstock to print on and made the copies - I took them up to the register to pay for them and the cashier looked at them and said -"no charge!" I replied. "but I have about 20 copies on cardstock... & he said, "I know !" How sweet and kind of him , I told him more about Barbaro and gave him a copy with a big THANKS written across the bottom !!

Barbaro brings out the best in us ! He represents grace and love. His aura captivates our inner beings, our hearts , our soul ! He transend the worlds problems and is a beacon of light a shinning star , a ray of hope!

Chad

I hope you read this. You are a inspiring young man, and I hope you keep up that positive attitude you have. Before I got cancer, I was voluntering with a group of children with various disibilities. The horse farm where they brought the children had horses for the children to ride along with many other animals. It always truelly amazed me the power of animals towards people like that. The effects it had and what it brought out in them and us the volunteers. Now we see it in the kindness of you.

Keep up the good work, you will go far in this life!!

Whoooeee I had a good nap. Missed all the good races though. Oh well. Thank you, Alex for the update! Sleep well tonight, Barbaro. Can't do much for sleeping through the vigil, but I have a vigil everynight for Bobby and his humans.

Kathy - Maybe you can get the tattoo covered up with a tattoo of something else. Maybe a fire hydrant. That would stink if someone get your ss# off of him. My ex and I had a beagle with a tattoo, but it was a serial number for that registry.

Rosemarie - Believe it or not I have loving snakes. They sense/smell me or feel the vibrations when I speak and come out of hiding to see me.

Thank you Kathy in VA, and Sally in Key West(Gordon and I thought of moving there),

Animals are amazing, in every way. Gordon's mother is one of the top-most Corgi experts and breeders in the country. She gave me the task in the family to keep up with our Magnificent BARBARo. Gordon would be proud!

OUR MAN CHAD,

Barbaro Nation. We got a lot of stuff wrong lately but we showed our compassion for a horse lover named Chad. Please all go back and read Chad's first post today, around 4.30. I believe he is the most pure, innocent soul I've ever had the privilege to meet.

Not because he liked the now infamous "produce group". Just read his posts, his love for animals will melt your heart. He emailed me directly. The most touching email of my life. After I cried for half an hour, I responded and his mom sent their phone number.

He told me about Barbaro, his teachers his first dog Bambi and his new dog Smarty Jones. THANK YOU to all who welcomed Chad and/or started talking about Smarty. Chad was able to follow most of it and was so excited to see Smarty's babies.

Chad told me that no matter what happens to Barbaro, it will be okay because he dreamt long ago that Jesus was walking Bambi, so Jesus must love animals, because "Bambi was old and walked slow" LOL. Chad is my new guru for Faith and Forgiveness.

Love to all who love Barbaro. Grow hoof grow.

Barbaro,

I will pray for you while I am on vacation and will eagerly await my return to a computer in a week so that I can check up on you. I hope that whatever coverage I may see in the newspapers continues to be good news. My love, thoughts, and prayers are with you.

To the Jacksons and the entire staff at NBC: Thank you for your love of this horse and your dedication. I wish that every animal was as lucky to have your love and care.

Bobby, bless you. Sleep well, and without a care. You are loved.

All good things. If you knew how many people have come together and prayed for you, thought of you, sent good thoughts, lit candles, you would love it - and probably give us each a bite.

You are making progress. You will get there. I believe that whole-heartedly.

Go with God, Bobby. Keep showing us what a winner looks like. The greatest of them all.

Ro & Brady: I didn't know about your loss before posting. I am so sorry. Yes, animals are such an amazing part of our lives. God blesses them, and they give us so many blessings in return.
Alex: I've never said anything before today, but thank you oh so much to you and all at TWR and at this comment section. You are all so special and unique and would be so missed if you were to go away, even to us who mostly just "lurk."
Chad: What a special young man. You have made so many friends today. I was so happy to read your posts.
Barbaro: Last but never, ever least. Heal, have ACN and we love you, pray for you and are so very proud of you.

Debbie B.,

I do believe snakes care. They are God's creatures too. Gordon was incredlibly affraid of them, but to overcome the fear, he watched every snake show on eihter The Geographic Chanel or Animal Planet to overcome that fear. Snakes like all animals are CREATURES OF GOOD, and are SPECIAL!

Marky thank you for what you did. I believe as I said before that Chad was sent to us for a reason. I have tears in my eyes still from reading your post. Please tell Chad to keep posting and let us know about his ride with Dave. Chad is exactly what the Produce Posse and everyone else needed to put things in perspective for us. Bobby sent him to be an ambassador for all that is innocent, pure and filled with hope.

Ro - I too was afraid of snakes. One day a literal snake in the grass helped me to overcome it. He wouldn't go away and eventually I picked him up and spent the afternoon with him. I spent the next week doing a lot of research and then got my first snake, it has been six years. One month ago my two corn snakes had seven babies.
I plan to keep one who cant be sold because he has a kink in his tail. I was going to call him Jag, maybe I should call him Bobby.

I also have a fear of horses and am looking into riding lessons to overcome that as well. I want to be able to admire these magnificant creatures up close. Wish me luck.

BREAKDOWNS AT DEL MAR

Big article, front page, today's L.A. Times

Too long to reproduce

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-horseinjuries5aug05,1,122107.story

Sorry I am late with this; headache, so have not really looked at paper but the article caught my eye as I was tidying up. Try to go to the link now while it is still available without log-in. I will repost the link tomorrow.

EXCERPTS:

"Scores of supposedly fit, seemingly healthy horses are suffering severe injuries without warning.

"Something is amiss," said Rick Arthur, incoming equine medical director of the California Horse Racing Board. Exactly what, though, is unclear.

"Industry experts have theories — track surfaces aren't forgiving enough, horses are being raced too often or while on pain medication that masks injuries — but there are few concrete reasons or solutions." ...

"I consider the injuries to these animals our Achilles' heel," Arthur said. "Every time we lose a horse, we lose a fan."

"More than 80% of catastrophic racing injuries are the result of bone fractures, ruptured tendons or ruptured ligaments, according to Sue Stover, an expert in equine orthopedic research who is a professor at UC Davis. Eight of the deaths at Del Mar this summer have been the result of a fracture to the sesamoid bone in a horse's front leg.

""The 8-year-old gelding Bonus Pack was among the horses put down in the past couple of weeks.

"He was like a family member … a sweet horse," said trainer Bill Spawr, who was bitter for days afterward. "I've talked to other trainers and we know the results, and we know there's something wrong." ...

"Pedro Esquivas, who has been a groom for 20 years and works for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella, said he too is concerned for his horses.

"I sleep with them. When you take care of a good horse, you become attached," he said. "It's like taking care of a baby. You have to take the temperature, see if he's eaten. We feel it when some horse dies. When you take care of a horse three, four years, you love the horse." ...

"There's a problem, but it's very complex," Shapiro said. " … we're doing everything we can."

"At Del Mar, track officials have added sand to the racing surface and increased from two to three the number of veterinarians on the pre-race inspection team. The track also hired a mechanical engineering professor to inspect the course using ground-penetrating radar. He found no inconsistencies.

"Nationally, the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has scheduled a two-day welfare and safety summit, Oct. 16-17 in Lexington, Ky., to consider issues surrounding thoroughbred injuries.

"Shapiro and Arthur point out that California is among the few states to compile statistics on horse injuries. Under a postmortem program established in 1990, more than 3,600 necropsies have been performed on horses fatally injured in a race or in training.

"But the reporting system is in need of improvement, Arthur said. Results are compiled only once a year, in November.

"With better reporting, we can keep a close eye on patterns and problems as they develop," he said at a racing board hearing last month.

"The future health of the racing industry could be at stake.

"Everybody, from the fans to the owners to the hot-walkers, are devastated by any horse injury," trainer Mandella said. "It's terrible, it's like losing your best friend."

Try to read the whole article if you can.

HEY MARKY - great to see you - enjoyed our emails but it's wonderful to see you here, too!!!

DEBBIE B - remember the interview when Dr. R said that Barbaro would have a "hitch in his giddyup?" That must be the equivalent to the kink in your snake's tail, so he definitely deserves the name BOBBY!
Nancy

Posted by: Nancy in CT at August 6, 2006 2:55 AM

HI NANCY ....

Of course I read your story, and I thought I responded to you about it ... if not, I apologize. It was a terrific, heart-warming story of brotherhood and love and what Barbaro is all about. I loved your story, Nancy, and I have been posting here, on and off, but to tell you the truth, I really can't 'deal' with all of the bickering so when that starts to happen, I remove myself from the situation.

When Bobby was still very 'critical' and we didn't know from 'hour to hour' what was going to happen, there was no thought or time to post comments that went off in different directions. We were all here for one purpose .... Barbaro ... period! That's the reason I came here and that's the reason I stay here.

Your story and stories like yours are uplifting and inspirational and rewarding to read; anything else, for me, is something I'm just not 'into' and that's not why I'm here. There are private emails for this very reason ... for people who have 'met' here and who have become friends ... that's terrific and they can email each other with stuff that rests on the periphery of Bobby's recovery. Anything that is Bobby-related I love to read, especially posts from Chad, who is inspired by Barbaro and his strength and determination.

When posts on this site veer from the purpose that Tim and Alex meant for it to be here, I just don't care to be involved. Sorry if this offends anyone but I have just seen a dramatic 'turn of events' in the last couple of weeks. We were all here united for Bobby's healing and recovery, and now that things are going better for him, people here are using this site for other purposes and they are getting into disagreements with each other which is causing Tim/Alex to 'police' this site and that disheartens me and saddens me.

That's all I have to say, and if anyone wants to 'flame' me for my comments here, that's fine, too because I will not respond.

Your story, Nancy, was a beautiful one ... I wish we could get back to that again.

LINNIE - I've been looking for you!! Did you see my story about my Barbaro hat? I submitted it for you to read after you mentioned sitting at your computer wearing your Barbaro hat...and then I haven't seen your name since then.

Are we doing something for Dr. r's Birthday?

My internet was down for a week and now I am confused.

Barbaro, grow your hoof!

Posted by: Katie B in Texas at August 6, 2006 2:55 AM

Oh my gosh;

"Statistics confirm some kind of problem. There were 154 racing fatalities during the 2004-05 racing season in California, an increase of 50% in a two-year period, according to the racing board. Including training, there were 320 deaths last season.

In the first 15 days at Del Mar, nine horses have been euthanized. Of those, three were injured in morning workouts and six during afternoon races. Last year, seven were euthanized because of racing injuries over the entire 43-day calendar.

But injuries are not limited to Del Mar. Santa Anita reported 44 fatalities last year, 19 during races. Hollywood Park had 33 — 13 during races."

This is disgusting!! All these deaths are making horse racing look like a slaughter sport. They better fix this problem and fast.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 6, 2006 2:56 AM

Lynda
Try to read the whole LA Times article on Del Mar if you get a chance. I thought it was interesting.

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at August 6, 2006 2:58 AM

Oh -- sorry! You did! :0

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at August 6, 2006 2:59 AM

Marilyn/CA - I haven't been all that involved in horse racing in years - I always watch the Triple Crown races, I used to go to Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Del Mar years ago - I am appalled at the breakdowns at Santa Anita last year. Since I don't follow this closely I'm am disgusted by this. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ASAP. Stop the races at Del Mar until the new track is installed. I'm just heartbroken! I don't know what else to say. I was going to bed earlier but decided to watch the posts - I wish I had gone to bed. Not your fault!!! I did not read the whole article - stopped when I read that 44 horse were put down at Santa Anita last year. UNACCPETABLE!!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 6, 2006 3:00 AM

I know. The numbers were appalling.

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at August 6, 2006 3:02 AM

Marilyn that was a very good article. I can understand about there being too many horses there, and they DO need to cut back on the racing. There is just way too much. I wonder how many of these horses who broke down race all year with almost no time off?

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 6, 2006 3:02 AM

The current problems at Del Mar are a bit of a statistical anomaly; Hollywood Park is closed for Polytrack installation and Santa Anita was closed for a week or two at the beginning of the season, also, so EVERYONE was training at Del Mar -- so Del Mar is overcrowded, and is also "ending up" with the other tracks' fatalities. Even so!! Too high.

Good Night Bobby and team Barbaro!

ShelleyA - I'll most certainly pray for Alibi's safety and your peace of mind.

Janice

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 6, 2006 3:06 AM

I have a favor to ask all of you. Can someone find out how many horses have run in the last 12-48 months at all tracks and then figure out how many horses have been put down or injured. I think these numbers are important - when sending emails to our contacts - about the petition for the polytrack installation - if we could include these numbers in our emails - I think that would make a HUGE difference. Lets say that 1000 horses races and 100 were put down (I know that is a bogus number)- I think that would make a huge difference in people signing the petition. I know this is a lot of work - I would be happy to do it - but I have no clue as to how to find these numbers.

I will post this again in the AM for those who have gone to bed. I'm just disgusted!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 6, 2006 3:06 AM

Goodnight dear Barbaro...it is just about 11 PM now and time for bed. I hope you have a very comfortable night. I will say my goodnight prayers for you shortly. Hope to hear another good update on you tomorrow. God Bless you Bobby, you are a true Champion and we all love you. Until tomorrow then!

Sally in Key West. It would be next to impossible to figure it out. Not every track keeps statistics and if they do, they don't always make them available to the public. Mabe just getting the statistics of the top tracks would be good enough, like Ca, Kentucky, Florida, and New York. If those statistics are bad, then we dont even want to know what the smaller, leser known tracks look like.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 6, 2006 3:10 AM

Lynda - where can I find that info???

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 6, 2006 3:11 AM

Sally
One of us with contacts in the racing world would be best for this project.

But I think the numbers are more complicated than that, as some of the horses are dying as a result of training injuries, not racing injuries.

Again, someone on the board who is familiar with all of this would have insight into the best way to present the numbers.

Maybe you can check around tomorrow; I'll be gone a lot of the day.

But I think our racehorse owners are busy on the weekends anyway?

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at August 6, 2006 3:12 AM

I mean training injuries at the tracks.

Must go off for awhile.

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at August 6, 2006 3:13 AM

Sally, I really don't know. Like Marilyn said, it would have to be somebody in the industry I think to pry the information out. I really don't know how one could go about getting it.

Thanks for our input girls - I'll post the same tomorrow and see if I can get a clue as to find out this information. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to get our petition signed and sent to Congress.

Thank you

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 6, 2006 3:16 AM

I should be in bed. 44 horses put down at Santa Anita? In one year at one track????? Don't get angry at me folks I am not a racing regular. Are these numbers normal or is this something new? What can we do?

Posted by: Marky at August 6, 2006 3:16 AM

Marky, it seems to be getting worse every year. They are NOT normal and should not be happening. It is making our sport look like a slaughter house. Those California numbers are horrible, and what has been happening at Arlington is also disgusting. Somnething has to be figured out.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 6, 2006 3:18 AM

Marky - if we can get the true numbers for the last year or two - horses raced vs horses put down - we have amunition when we send the petition out.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 6, 2006 3:19 AM

I hate to bring bad news - put the horses put down are probably going to the alaughter house - tht makes this even more important to get the numbers.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 6, 2006 3:20 AM

Hello All,
What a wonderful day for a vigil for our Bobby! I am lucky to work in a great metaphysical store so I brought home 2 great candles - 1 for manifesting miracles and the other for healing. I felt such peace while praying = especially knowing how many people were joined together for such a great cause.
Chad - So great you have joined us. I have a 14 year old son, but I can't seem to get him interested in all of this. He will watch an occassional video if I make him but doesn't do much Barbaro research on his own. Thank you for your in=put.
God bless you all for spending time today in positive thoughts for Bobby.
Believe in Miracles!
Cindy

Posted by: Cindy Campbell at August 6, 2006 3:22 AM

Yea, we dont know how many of the slightly injured horses are being carted off to slaughter, because there ARE owners who are nothing like the Jacksons or Michael Matz and these owners just don't want to spend the money to help the horse. There are no statistics for those numbers.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 6, 2006 3:23 AM

I'm going to bed - will continue this discussion in the am.

Sleep tight everyone - you too Bobby - I love you honey. xxoo and scratchies,

AN INTERVIEW WITH BARBARO…
AR = ANONYMOUS REPORTER
BTM = BARBARO THE MAGNIFICENT

AR – Excuse me, sir, do you have time to talk?
BTM – Well…it’s almost my bedtime, but I don’t have to do EVERYTHING they tell me.
AR – Oh, like the nipping?
BTM – Yeah, they don’t like that kind of thing here, but I’m just having a little fun. They won't let me fool around with ladies here - can you imagine? Better talk fast before we get caught.
AR – Yes, sir! Have you heard about all these people who pray for you and light candles for you and talk to each other about you and about their horses and dogs and cats?
BTM – You must mean the fruit and veggie people and the Barbaromanics.
AR – Yes, what do you think about them?
BTM – Great people. I read their notes on my laptop when I’m supposed to be sleeping. I know they are trying hard to help me get out of this place and they love me a lot – it gives a guy a swelled head! But I don’t understand them.
AR – What don’t you understand?
BTM – They all love me and they’re all nice people or they wouldn’t spend so much time talking to each other, but some people get mad when other people get silly. I know it’s just a joke when they talk about coming here dressed up like carrots. Security would throw them out on their fat butts…and they even have someone who wants to dress up like my doctor…she better think twice about poking at me like he does! I’ll give her a nip she’ll never forget. But seriously, I like a good joke. That’s why I go boing, boing, boing when I’m in my recliner chair.
AR – Oh, I thought that was a sling.
BTM – Just proves you humans don’t know everything.
AR – So you don’t get mad when those people get silly?
BTM – No, I get mad when the people get mean and say bad things to each other – makes me want to nip them all! That’s why some of them tell me to keep nipping when I’m here…because they nip at each other, too.
AR – You are obviously a very intelligent horse because you are doing so much to help yourself get well. Maybe you have some advice for them?
BTM – Come on, I’m brilliant, but I’m no Albert Einstein.
AR – Well, it’s been suggested that some of the people will go someplace else to talk about you so nobody will get mad when they are silly, and the rest of the people will stay where they are and talk about you without being silly. Any comment, sir? Sir, sir, Mr. Barbaro, are you all right? Stop laughing so hard – you’re scaring me. I don’t want you to fall down. What’s so funny?
BTM – And they call US dumb animals? I’d rather be a horse than a jackass any day!

Well, Buddy Barbaro,

Another week of ACN's....Way to go, big guy!

While you sleep tonight, I pray that our Heavenly Father will protect, make you comfortable and surround you with his healing light. Know that we are here with you, always.

To Dr. R., Dr. Anderson, the staff at NBC and M/M Jackson, we are most grateful for the loving care that you give to our buddy. You are the best!

To Tim, Alex and team, (our lifeline) words can never express the appreciation we feel for all you do for us.

To all you Bobby-heads, God's blessings to each and every one you.

Faith

P.S. Hey, buddy, can you feel the love, tonight? I'll bet you can*****************

www.corvinoballet.org/29906.html

Posted by: Ernie at August 6, 2006 3:33 AM

Sally.. (take this kindly as I mean no disrespect)

Please research.. most of those horse euthanized and NOT taken to slaughter.. Not the way the racing world do things when a horse is euthanized on a track/barn..

biggest reasons.. THE chemicals used to put a horse down is prohibited in the "food" chain. most of those horses are buried. You can not use a animal for "food" if it has been euthanized like they do..

I would be happy to show you articles about the issue. I work in rescue (mostly dogs/birds).. but my daughter is a vet (well almost, she graduates in Nov) and works in Large animals

Posted by: Mary L Ohio at August 6, 2006 3:33 AM

My roommate left the dishes in the dishwasher for so long they were growing mold. Must rewash...

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 6, 2006 3:43 AM

I can't really process the things I'm learning. How sad is it that I now am "happy" when I hear euthanasia before slaughter.
At least euthanasia is less cruel. But is still means that a young animal dies. I have nothing against horse racing. But surely conditions can improve?

Posted by: Marky at August 6, 2006 3:46 AM

For darling Barbaro:

A peaceful vigil is kept tonight that you may rest from your fearless fight. Rest, brave heart, as you're held in prayer, forever in God's tender care.

I love you Barbaro.

Posted by: Deborah at August 6, 2006 3:52 AM

Marky, they are going to have to improve, because no one is going to watch a sport in which so many animals die like this. Something drastic needs to happen. like mabe shutting down horse racing at Del Mar until they figure out what is going on. It would be a loss of money, but their reputation is more important.

Alex...thanks so much for all the updates you provide, I would be lost if I couldn't check in here for your updates at least 10 times a day.

Peter and Michael, I personally thank you guys for making sure our Bobby does not feel alone. Michael, special thanks for sitting with him while he sleeps...so touching and a great soul you have.

I don't want to leave anyone out, so my thanks to all who put Bobby above all else. He is a part of all of our lives now.

Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, you are such special people and I thank you for sharing your boy with the world. Thank you for knowing him enough to allow him to show those who do not know him well just what kind of guy he is.

Does anyone know the status with the bracelets from Lisa Morin and Skyler? Are we still going to be able to purchase them even though some person copied the design?

Also want to thank the posters for giving the site for H.R.503. I signed it and received a beautiful letter from United States Senate (Senator Robert Merendez) informing me that he is making sure these horses do not get slaughtered.

Also signed the petition for poly track, thanks.

Hope you had a good rest of the day.

Bobby, thank you for your wonderful example. Sleep well and have happy dreams.

Nancy: That Bobby interview was hysterical, you need to repost tomorrow during the day so all can enjoy and take notes. You are right about my snakling, he does have a hitch in his giddyup like Bobby.

Marilyn- That article was horrible - too many injuries/deaths. They need to stop blaming and investigate and research why. Then actually do something about it. Whether it is the track surfaces, the training regimens, the racing schedules, etc....

Lynda - I hope you are scrubbing dishes right now- yucky.

Posted by: Debbie B. from Miami, Fl. at August 6, 2006 4:14 AM

Good Evening, Team Barbaro!

Am back from Cirque de Soleil (awesome...) and dinner with dear friends. As I thought, I was on the Schuylkill Expressway at vigil time so all I could do at the time was send a quick prayer and healing energy to our sweet Bobby J. But all of you made up for my physical absence in spades. Fabulous.

To catch up:

Sam-E and WM - thank you for reading my story. The support I'm getting is an affirmation that I'm meant to write.

Marilyn/CA - let me check the equine acupressure and the Tellington TTouch equine books I have...funny you should mention it...Stormy kept presenting the right side of his neck to me yesterday...just gave him a huge hug and concentrated Reiki there as well. When I go to sleep soon, I'll send to Barbaro and include what you were getting. I'm thinking it may be a communication issue - another message from our sweet Bobby J that we need to hear???? That's what I'm getting right now, but I'm exhausted and its not the optimal time to meditate right now. Gotta meditate on this one tomorrow.

Monica, my prayers and healing energy are not only going to your precious Sluggo but to Walter and China.

Tim - hooray for Gator Nation!Good show!!!

Chad - you are a sweetheart and a pure soul. Welcome to the site and hope you make lots of new friends here. We all love Bobby J - so add your energy and your love to this Barbaro Nation...hope you get to ride horses some more.

Karann - re your leaving (and those others)...I'm gonna approach this situation from another POV. As Bobby is going thru his healing, I am feeling that all these episodes of negativity are actually opportunities for all of us to heal ourselves in some way. Yes, its easy to get pulled into dramas. Yes, its easy for those dramas to escalate. But now you can take what you've learned and use it both by posting here and by treating others with respect and caring and compassion.

Maybe this site is another healing tool. So many emotional issues are coming out here and maybe that is part of the purpose of this site. We learn from our mistakes. In this forum, we learn them quickly and that's the joy of it - the lessons don't have to be long and drawn out.

I guess what I'm saying is that again, Bobby is the point of origination for a heck of a lot of healing and learning to take care of each other.

And isn't that one of the greatest gifts???? So you may not have to leave...just forgive yourself (believe me, that's hard to do...I speak from personal experience.). Leave the negativity - or better yet, transform it into caring.

Sweet Bobby J - sorry I wasn't here to tuck you in (maybe Dr R let you stay up late...it is, after all, the weekend...hehe). I love you always...hope you felt my distance sending during the night. I focused on both rear legs for healing and protection for the front legs and the rest of your body...felt the energy flowing right to you and I went to sleep smiling knowing that in my own small way, I was contributing to helping you get better. That's one of my dearest wishes - that you simply heal.

I'm rambling like the dickens...so will sign off now and get some sleep.

Healing and Peace,
Lyn Gilbert

Good evening, Everyone,

I just finished reading the posts that I missed from through the vigil, until now. (about 1:35 ish EST)

I went to the closing night performance of a play that my son was in, so I could not participate right AT the vigil time. But, earlier, today, I lit a candle, put on a Michael Hedges CD, and held my sick rabbit, for about 90 minutes. There is no way that I would miss the honor of doing some sort of vigil on Barbaro's day.

The play was very good. I am proud of my son's work. He has so much talent.

Saddly, when I got home, I discovered that our "Big Bunny" had passed away.

I wish I had the energy right now to comment on some of the posts that I read here, tonight, but I am out of heart and energy, at the moment.

Just want to let you know to count one more candle for the final bright total, tonight.

Love to all of you, and to our Sweet Boy.

Julia B. - Nice to find someone else who is going. I did get tickets. It was past the deadline, but I got tickets from the lottery that they drew from after the deadline. SHELLEY A,

I'll be thinking good thoughts about Ironclad Alibi tomorrow. He'll be fine, though, and you know why? Because by definition, an Ironclad Alibi cannot be broken! Good luck and safe racing.

CHAD--SHOUT OUT TO YOU! I'm so glad Bobby has a friend like you to talk to. I hope you keep posting. Can't wait to hear about your ride!

BOBBY: Though I couldn't take part in your vigil tonight, I was with you in spirit. Have another comfortable night, and a good day tomorrow, and keep doing what you're doing. It does not matter whether ESPN covers you. You'll continue to heal and go home, and we will all be cheering you on and supporting you, while ESPN and other stations are covering bowling tournaments in Pocatello.

So, sweet Bobby, sleep well and heal, and be careful getting up and down tonight. Tomorrow is a brand new day. I love you.

Good Night, Barbaro, I hope you are resting well at this late hour. Sweet dreams - crunchy apples and sunny meadows! I believe in my heart that these moments when you are asleep and resting are when the healing takes place. I hope you felt all the love that was especially sent your way during the vigil this evening, and so many candles burning for you.
You are so intelligent and majestic! Think positive, Barbaro, and keep "communicating" with Dr. R (smile), you know the physician-patient relationship is a most important one! (I bet they were just friendly "nips" I heard about - smile!) I'm so very glad when Alex reports that your very closest friends are permitted to visit with you, and I think they should let Alex visit, too!!
I hope your Sunday morning dawns bright and beautiful, Barbaro!
It is very quiet at this late hour and I find myself thinking of you and hearing Josh Groban singing "You Raise Me Up".
Hugs, kisses, "horse scratchies", and prayers. . . Love you, Lou Ann, in Pennsylvania

P.S. Barbaro, it seems there is a special young man, "Chad", cheering for you also. If I understood correctly Chad has a special occasion coming up - to ride a horse, let's hope the horse Chad gets to ride is just as special as you!

As always, I believe in miracles, I believe in Barbaro!

There are many articles out there that will point that it boils down to approximately 2 per day breakdown and are euthanized.

SPEAKING OF DEL MAR,
The President responded to our letter. Here's his respons that was posted earlier;

Joe Harper (President and General Manager of Del Mar race Track) Responds to campaigningforbarbaro.com
about the Joysey Jeff incident.

Thank you for taking the time to write to me about the breakdowns. Believe me, we are as upset as anyone with this rash of injuries. J.J.'s trainer said afterwards that the track wasn't at fault and that he just took a bad step. The ambulance was dispatched within seconds of the horse being injured but the wet ground made it impossible to drive up the slope to the grass track. A splint was applied and the horse was taken to the ambulance. Not what we wanted to happen but it was the only way to get the horse into the ambulance. We have since figured out a way to solve that problem. A hard lesson to learn for all of us. I wish I could put my finger on any one reason but to tell you the truth there are many factors. Prior injuries that have gone unnoticed. We are seeing evidence of this in studying the legs of horses that have been euthanized at all the California tracks over the years. The noted columnist, Andy Beyer, recently wrote an article that spoke of a breeding industry that bred more for speed than endurance. The number of racing days. Too many in my opinion. Overcrowding on Del Mar's stable area. This puts a very large number of horses on the track in the morning. Especially after the renovations. The horsemen are cooperating and spreading out their works. Too many sore horses.....This, in my opinion, is the #1 reason. Our vets check every horse that is entered. This is done in the morning. They look at past performances and check x-rays if available. They take the horse out of the stall and check his legs. If there is any doubt about the soundness of the horse it is scratched. And we are doing this with three vet this year instead of the usual two. The new synthetic track that we will put in for next year's meet will go a long way to solving many of these problems. It is a very forgiving track. The breakdowns are greatly reduced where this product has been in operation. I hope this answers a few of your concerns. Please know that no one cares more about the well being of the horses than the crew of people we have working here.

Here's my Barbaro story of the week:

Because of the blistering daytime heat, I left for
the grocery story at midnight, Thurs., am.
A very elderly lady was checking me out and asked
"if that was my horse (I had on my B t-shirt)?"
I asked her if she remembered the great horse who
won the Kentucky Derby . . . and on I went with
B's story. At that hour there weren't many
customers so employees drifted over while I was
telling Bobby's tale. They all cared about him
and are now aware of this site.
Barbaro makes magic wherever we (the maniacs) go!!
He has turned out to be such a pure icon of love and courage in contrast to the rest of the worldly disarray.
His impact is so much greater than the
Kentucky Derby!!!

Alex: When I watched the horrific injury at the
Preakness, I felt nauseated for several days and
wanted to know what was happening to B. I used
Google and eventually found this site. I would
have remained nauseated had you not been so
generous in providing updates on his condition.
So please keep them coming.
I hope we don't lose the posts but I respect your
decisions.

Sweet Barbaro: May you be healed and live long!
