    Barbaro Updates: 38

    updates are now here.

Update 386: Just caught up with Peter Brette. No update yet this morning (I'll call him about noon to see if he has heard) but he did tell me all was well yesterday, so that was good.

I asked Theresa what it was like to ride Barbaro. Theresa used to work for Michael Matz last year. She now works for Jim MvGreevy. She was one of the few who rode Barbaro other than Peter (we know his jockeys only rode him on race day) before Barbaro went down to Florida last year. Her comment: "he had gears you would not believe".

Update 385: This morning's update will be later in the morning that usual. Michael Matz is in Saratoga so I won't likely have any information until after finishing at Fair Hill. There was a fundraising ball in Saratoga last night for New Bolton Center. I believe Dr. Richardson (and likely some others from New Bolton) was in attendance. I had asked a friend to quiz him for some insight but he was pretty busy, as you can imagine.

I have removed the comments section for the time being, if you have any articles of interest you think I could post here, any questions you would like answering, any poems and other creative works for me to post, please e-mail me. I would appreciate it as it would hopefully retain some of the value the comments section was providing.

Finally, worldwide interest in Bobby remains: Australia and New Zealand.

Update 384: Here are a couple of articles I have been meaning to post. With so much human suffering in the world, it would be easy to condemn America's obsession with an injured racehorse - easy but wrong. This Guardian (UK) article discusses why we care. It includes the excerpt:

But all the attention has brought out the sceptics. Don't Americans have more important things to worry about than a horse, they ask.

It seems a valid point, but it misrepresents the real issue. Our capacity for compassion is not finite. There is no reason to suppose that those of us who find ourselves caught up in the story of a horse's progress are unconcerned with the fate of human beings in infinitely graver situations.

There are plenty of good reasons why so many people care so much about Barbaro. The simplest and the most potent? The sheer spectacle, the power and the glory, of a great horse at full gallop.

Note, this article is a little dated (two weeks after the Preakness). I thought it was also interesting to note that Peter Brette rode a winner for Ginger McCain (Red Rum's trainer), on the flat!

This article: Power of healing harnessed focuses on The New Jersey Equine Center and Dr. Scott Palmer. It notes Dr. Palmer was a guest of Michael Matz for the Preakness and involved immediately after the accident. We noted in one of the earlier updates a visit to Bobby of Dr. Palmer. The article also notes Smarty Jones' visit to New Jersey Equine. A good article for those interested in learning more about equine hospitals.

Update 383: Nice to see Bluegrass Cat win the Haskell. One of Bobby's Derby victims (just had to add that). ESPNs update on Barbaro included a note that Michael said Barbaro remained in good spirits. That is positive and what I continually here. I asked Peter how he looked when we went yesterday, specifically about his weight and coat. He has dropped weight, but that is only to be expected given he was supremely fit when he entered NBC and has been virtually immobile since. Imagine a human athlete who has to stop exercise entirely for the same period of time. Fortunately he has retained an incredible appetite so that has helped. While he has dropped weight his coat remains very shiny, and he retains a gleam in his eye, both very positive signs. There is much speculation as to why there are no recent Bobby pictures, I am absolutely sure it is not because they believe his appearance would create concern.

Another nugget of information from Peter yesterday, neither Jose Caraballo or Edgar Prado rode Barbaro at any time other than in his races.

Delaware Park was fun today. Peter was there, saddling a horse in the sixth for Michael Matz (who is in Saratoga). I saw Jose Caraballo. I thanked him for our interview (it was by phone, he was not entirely sure who I was when I called), and he was very happy to have been able to do it. The Keilbasa Queen was fourth and came back safely.

Update 382: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (Saturday night). I just spoke to Peter Brette who had received word this morning. Off to Delaware Park this afternoon to watch some races...
    updated sunday 11:30am

Update 381: From time to time I will get snippets of information from Saratoga (from friends up there) that I will post. Some of it will likely relate directly to Bobby, some perhaps not some much, but general racing interest. A friend of mine visited with Bernadini yesterday, and in light of our interview with Tom Albertrani, I wanted to share the content:

I just had a good look at Bernardini in his stall this afternoon and a talk with Dave Wallace, the assistant trainer who is an old pal of mine. He said that they are thankful for Barbaro's continuous popularity and recovery, as it is allowing Bernardini a lot more peace from the press. Of course the usual racing publications want to see him, but the mainstream newspapers are not overly interested. He is a very cool horse, medium sized with a nice disposition. Dave says that when he comes out of the stall he seems to grow, the way most good horses do when their blood is slightly up. (Dave was assistant/exercise rider for Mott for the past 18 years, galloped Cigar, etc.)

Update 380: Yesterday during my visit to New Bolton I met the Thomas family. They were from Tampa, FL, in the area for a family reunion, but I think that was their excuse to come and offer their wishes for Barbaro. They placed a couple of nice pictures for Barbaro on the main entrance. I of course took some pictures (there is a nice poster from the Barbaromaniacs!) which will take a few days to get posted on the site. I also took some pictures of the lobby area. The Churchill Downs cards (I think there are six) are still there, there is one from Pimlico, as well as other cards from tracks and individuals / groups of people. I don't think Peter had seen these before (he does not need to visit the lobby area to visit Barbaro) and was pretty moved when I returned with him to show him. The outpouring is very impressive.

A few pieces of content from the comments from Updates 37 (sorry if I missed something):
    Julia B. 9:26 pm:

Hello again - I just wanted to add this little tid bit ...
Today I went to copy the picture I drew of Barbaro, I got cardstock to print on and made the copies - I took them up to the register to pay for them and the cashier looked at them and said -"no charge!" I replied. "but I have about 20 copies on cardstock... & he said, "I know !" How sweet and kind of him , I told him more about Barbaro and gave him a copy with a big THANKS written across the bottom !!

Barbaro brings out the best in us ! He represents grace and love. His aura captivates our inner beings, our hearts , our soul ! He transend the worlds problems and is a beacon of light a shinning star , a ray of hope!

    Sharri, 12:45 am:

Into our lives has come, a special creature who has captured our hearts and souls.
    Barbaro is his name.

Into our lives has come a hero who has raced against adversity and has shown us all how to win.
    Barbaro is his name.

Into our lives has come an example of what is good and loving and who expects nothing in return except caring and kindness.
    Barbaro is his name.

Into our lives has come a beautiful bay colt who is truely an old soul at heart.
    Barbaro is his name.

    WM. 9:58 pm:

    ***JOB APPLICANT***

A local business was looking for office help. They put a sign in the window saying:
    HELP WANTED
Must be a good typist and be good with a computer. Successful applicant must be bilingual. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.
A short time later a lovely bay horse trotted up to the window, saw the sign and went
inside. He looked at the receptionist and nodded his head, then walked over to the sign, looked at it, whinnied and pawed the air.
The receptionist called the office manager. He was surprised, to say the least, to see a horse applicant. However, the horse looked determined, so he led him into the office. Inside, the horse laid down and stared at the manager expectantly.
The manager said, "I can't hire you. The sign says you must be able to type."
The horse jumped up, went to the word processorr and proceeded to quickly type a perfect business letter. He took out the page and trotted over to the manager, gave it to him, then laid back down.
The manager was stunned, but told the horse, "That was fantastic, but I'm sorry. The sign clearly says that whoever I hire has to be good with a computer."
The horse jumped up again, went to the computer and proceeded to demonstrate his expertise with various programs, internet marketing, and produced a sample spreadsheet and database; then presented them to the manager.
The manager was dumbfounded! He said to the horse, "Hey, I realize that you are a very intelligent applicant and have fantastic talent, but you're a horse -- no way could I hire you."
The horse trotted over to the sign in the window and pointed his hoof at the words, "Equal Opportunity Employer."
The exasperated manager said, "Yes, I know what the damned sign says. But the sign also says you have to be bilingual."
The horse looked him straight in the eye and said, "Meow."

Update 379: The update today won't come until probably lunchtime I am afraid. Michael Matz has returned to Saratoga, and Peter will speak to him likely mid morning to get an update. I will try to speak to Peter shortly after that. In the meantime I will provide some other content, a mix of comments from yesterday, content from my NBC visit with Peter and a snippet on Bernadini.

    BREAKDOWNS AT DEL MAR

Big article, front page, yesterday's L.A. Times

    Too long to reproduce

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-horseinjuries5aug05,1,122107.story

Sorry I am late with this; I had a migraine yesterday, so had not really looked at paper, but the article caught my eye as I was tidying up. Try to go to the link now while it is still available without log-in. I just checked (3 am in CA -- still awake with migraine) and the article is accessible at this time.

    EXCERPTS:

"Scores of supposedly fit, seemingly healthy horses are suffering severe injuries without warning.

"Something is amiss," said Rick Arthur, incoming equine medical director of the California Horse Racing Board. Exactly what, though, is unclear.
"Industry experts have theories — track surfaces aren't forgiving enough, horses are being raced too often or while on pain medication that masks injuries — but there are few concrete reasons or solutions."

Statistics confirm some kind of problem. There were 154 racing fatalities during the 2004-05 racing season in California, an increase of 50% in a two-year period, according to the racing board. Including training, there were 320 deaths last season.

In the first 15 days at Del Mar, nine horses have been euthanized. Of those, three were injured in morning workouts and six during afternoon races. Last year, seven were euthanized because of racing injuries over the entire 43-day calendar.

But injuries are not limited to Del Mar. Santa Anita reported 44 fatalities last year, 19 during races. Hollywood Park had 33 — 13 during races.

"I consider the injuries to these animals our Achilles' heel," Arthur said. "Every time we lose a horse, we lose a fan." ...

"I consider the injuries to these animals our Achilles' heel," Arthur said. "Every time we lose a horse, we lose a fan."

"More than 80% of catastrophic racing injuries are the result of bone fractures, ruptured tendons or ruptured ligaments, according to Sue Stover, an expert in equine orthopedic research who is a professor at UC Davis. Eight of the deaths at Del Mar this summer have been the result of a fracture to the sesamoid bone in a horse's front leg.

""The 8-year-old gelding Bonus Pack was among the horses put down in the past couple of weeks.
"He was like a family member … a sweet horse," said trainer Bill Spawr, who was bitter for days afterward. "I've talked to other trainers and we know the results, and we know there's something wrong." ...

"Pedro Esquivas, who has been a groom for 20 years and works for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella, said he too is concerned for his horses.

"I sleep with them. When you take care of a good horse, you become attached," he said. "It's like taking care of a baby. You have to take the temperature, see if he's eaten. We feel it when some horse dies. When you take care of a horse three, four years, you love the horse." ...

"There's a problem, but it's very complex," Shapiro said. " … we're doing everything we can."

"At Del Mar, track officials have added sand to the racing surface and increased from two to three the number of veterinarians on the pre-race inspection team. The track also hired a mechanical engineering professor to inspect the course using ground-penetrating radar. He found no inconsistencies.

"Nationally, the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has scheduled a two-day welfare and safety summit, Oct. 16-17 in Lexington, Ky., to consider issues surrounding thoroughbred injuries.

"Shapiro and Arthur point out that California is among the few states to compile statistics on horse injuries. Under a postmortem program established in 1990, more than 3,600 necropsies have been performed on horses fatally injured in a race or in training.

"But the reporting system is in need of improvement, Arthur said. Results are compiled only once a year, in November.

"With better reporting, we can keep a close eye on patterns and problems as they develop," he said at a racing board hearing last month.
"The future health of the racing industry could be at stake.

"Everybody, from the fans to the owners to the hot-walkers, are devastated by any horse injury," trainer Mandella said. "It's terrible, it's like losing your best friend."

Try to read the whole article if you can.

    Good morning to all,

My name is Amy I am Chad's mom. Excuse me for taking some space from Barbaro. I just needed to thank all of you for being so kind to Chad. He does not like for others to see his writing due to bullying in the past. He also avoids conflict whenever possible. I was terrified when he showed me his first post. I told him that he was taking sides in a conflict and that people might say harsh things. He said that he could handle it. What a relief to see the kind responses. So many of you went out of your way to help him. Chad loves animals with a fierce passion and I knew that they would help in his development. Still I was surprised to see a horse help with his courage and language skills. I should have listened to Chad. Just before the Kentucky Derby he told me Barbaro is going to win, he's special. Yes he is.

Just like Barbaro, Chad is very special too! You're son is amazing.

Thank you for sharing with all of us.

    Hello, Chad's Mom, Amy ...

I just read your beautiful remarks ... you have an incredibly spiritual son who is destined for his own greatness in so many ways. It's amazing how much Barbaro's 'journey' has inspired all of us ... we want to be like him and be brave and courageous and determined and fearless and accepting and trusting. Barbaro is all of these things and he, too, is incredibly spiritual ... a very old soul indeed.

Your son is a 'gift' to this site ... thank you for allowing us to share in his beauty and wisdom.

    Amy

I am so glad you wrote. I am really moved by Chad's participation. It was very courageous of him -- he is Being Like Barbaro, as we say around here.

One of the things I've mentioned here is the current research on the brain/heart connection. Scientists are discovering that the heart has its own neurological system, and that it is a seat of cognition, much like the brain.

Chad is very intelligent; he thinks with his heart. Of course, it is important that he be in school, but the educational system is not set up for that kind of intellligence.

It is good that he can be around horses, as they do seem to understand and recognize intelligence of the heart. Maybe he can learn to work with them at some point.

You should be very proud of Chad; he is a really fine young man, and you are obviously a great mom.

I know you have shed lots of tears over all of this; I hope happy ones.

I'm sorry we were not able to continue with the silly posts, which I know were probably really helping him with his reading skills, and with processing his grief about Barbaro. But hopefully it will be some compensation that he can interact with people here, in a good way.

Just know that we have his back. Stop by any time, Amy, or get in touch. myounge@comcast.net

AMY - we're glad to hear from you, and thanks for sharing your wonderful son with us. Chad is a blessing here!
I don't think Barbaro would feel you were "taking space from him" because he's always glad to have new fans and supporters!
Love and blessings to you and Chad,

DEBBIE B, in the wee hours last night, suggested that this be reposted this morning so more folks could read it...

    AN INTERVIEW WITH BARBARO…
    AR = ANONYMOUS REPORTER
    BTM = BARBARO THE MAGNIFICENT

AR – Excuse me, sir, do you have time to talk?
BTM – Well…it’s almost my bedtime, but I don’t have to do EVERYTHING they tell me.
AR – Oh, like the nipping?
BTM – Yeah, they don’t like that kind of thing here, but I’m just having a little fun. They won't let me fool around with ladies here - can you imagine? Better talk fast before we get caught.
AR – Yes, sir! Have you heard about all these people who pray for you and light candles for you and talk to each other about you and about their horses and dogs and cats?
BTM – You must mean the fruit and veggie people and the Barbaromanics.
AR – Yes, what do you think about them?
BTM – Great people. I read their notes on my laptop when I’m supposed to be sleeping. I know they are trying hard to help me get out of this place and they love me a lot – it gives a guy a swelled head! But I don’t understand them.
AR – What don’t you understand?
BTM – They all love me and they’re all nice people or they wouldn’t spend so much time talking to each other, but some people get mad when other people get silly. I know it’s just a joke when they talk about coming here dressed up like carrots. Security would throw them out on their fat butts…and they even have someone who wants to dress up like my doctor…she better think twice about poking at me like he does! I’ll give her a nip she’ll never forget. But seriously, I like a good joke. That’s why I go boing, boing, boing when I’m in my recliner chair.
AR – Oh, I thought that was a sling.
BTM – Just proves you humans don’t know everything.
AR – So you don’t get mad when those people get silly?
BTM – No, I get mad when the people get mean and say bad things to each other – makes me want to nip them all! That’s why some of them tell me to keep nipping when I’m here…because they nip at each other, too.
AR – You are obviously a very intelligent horse because you are doing so much to help yourself get well. Maybe you have some advice for them?
BTM – Come on, I’m brilliant, but I’m no Albert Einstein.
AR – Well, it’s been suggested that some of the people will go someplace else to talk about you so nobody will get mad when they are silly, and the rest of the people will stay where they are and talk about you without being silly. Any comment, sir? Sir, sir, Mr. Barbaro, are you all right? Stop laughing so hard – you’re scaring me. I don’t want you to fall down. What’s so funny?
BTM – And they call US dumb animals? I’d rather be a horse than a jackass any day!

    Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

First of all, Sweet Bobby J - its a new day here in Chester County - not too hot anymore (thank heaven). Healing energy is coming your way. Just keep doing what you are doing - getting better, my dear Chipper Nipper...:)

Amy and Chad - you are two very special people. Whatever help and support we can give...just ask and its there. I can tell Chad has a sweet spirit and Amy - you're very special to have raised such a loving, courageous, compassionate young man. Any parent who can raise a child to be loving, sweet, brave, kind in this insane world has already earned their angel wings. Welcome home...

Karann...had a feel you were dealing with some intense issues - energy is on the way.

Otherlyn- my prayers are with you and with Big Bunny...in my mind, I can visualize him scampering around the horse angels...

Cindy Campbell...will e-mail you once I get some sleep...I'm exhausted...have not forgotten you...

    Healing to all,
    Lyn Gilbert

OTHERLYN - my prayers and sympathy go out to you in your grief over the death of Big Bunny.
We had a bunny (along with a dog and cat) when my son was a little guy, and they are wonderful pets. My son's class visited the bunny before Easter vacation and were delighted that the bunny had prepared a giant Easter basket for them to take back to school!
The one thing we know is that there are some wonderful friends for him over the Rainbow Bridge.
Have a day of blessings and healing!

That job application story is so cute! Great laugh this early in the morning! Thanks for the info. on the reception area. Can you tell us what Barbaro was doing when Peter visted?

    DEAR ALEX,

Thank you for the nice updates and info this morning...

If you please, and if you can, were there any particular observations or info from Mr. Brette on Barbaro's general condition from his visit..?

I am asking you for this reason. I'm looking forward to a time when Bobby pulls away from being in an unsound condition, with the prospect of complications and setbacks all but behind him..
and when he breaks into some sort of rehab/recovery phase where he can begin to get himself back... Is it premature to think about it?

Thanks so much for everything you do...I think we are all trying to be positive and look ahead...

Good morning, Barbaro! I trust you slept well and dreamed about a ton of carrots! We held a vigil for you last night on AOL while the rest of the world prayed and had their vigils, wherever they were. It was a powerful night, and our vigil was really wonderful! Thanks to everyone who participated, no matter where, and a special thanks to those who joined us in our room on AOL. There were a few new faces, which was great! You are so loved. I wanted to share the two prayers that were said in the vigil with everyone, so you all can be part of our little vigil too.

Vicky wrote:"Dear Lord, we pray that you would watch over our Barbaro and that you will continue to lay your healng hands on him and that you will keep him comfortable, and free of pain. Be with him our Lord, his owners, and caretakers and help him to be restored to as normal a horse as he can be. We ask these things in your name. Amen!"

And I wrote: "And as we pray here in this room.. and reach out our hands to each other in this room.. and extend our hands to all who are praying right now for Barbaro.. and his owners and caretakers.. may we open our hearts to continue in the spirit of unconditional love to bring healing to this amazing horse, and in doing so.. to us also. Amen!"

Good Morning, Alex and All Other Lovers of the Special One.

Thanks for the early morning updates, Alex. I suspect that it must be an overwhelming rush of emotions to see all the lobby posters with the hundreds of signatures from well wishers. Like we've been saying here, there is a force generated by love.

Good Morning Beautiful Boy. Hope you feel physically and mentally uplifted this morning from all the loving energy that came your way last night. What have you planned for this promising new day? You will receive visitors of course, get in a few love nips perhaps and eat lots of tasty treats. Maybe, if you act really sweet to the staff you can get a nice massage. Of course, you are always nothing but sweet because you are Barbaro.

Alex and Peter are giving us info from their visit yesterday. We are always anxious to hear everything and anything that pertains to you. We also hope that Edgar can visit you again soon.

Will check on you later, Mr. BJ. Everyone enjoy the new day.

    Jill H.

    Good morning Precious Bobby,

    Good Morning Barbaromaniacs!!!!!
Thanks for everything Tim & Alex. I am really enjoying Alex's thoughts & observations from his visit to NBC yesterday.

I'm trying to get up to speed with all of yesterday's posts. My sister is visiting from California and life is wacky!!!! I posted a question yesterday thinking I was in for the night. Then I needed to leave unexpectantly & I was not able to follow up with the answering posts. I'll get back to it!

I did see the most important posts from Chad!!!! And just read the post from Chad's mom Amy! You two are VERY Special people! Thank you for sharing a little of yourselves with us! We are blessed & much better for getting to know you!

Barbaro you continue to amaze me! The "Barbaro Effect" is in itself a miracle! Amazing things continue to happen, all because of you! How do we ever thank you, Beautiful Barbaro?

Good morning! I just went through a couple of posts from last night and I DO wish you luck with the horse riding lessons. I saw that last night, but was on the phone w/ Mom and didn't type my thoughts. Sorry :)

    All,

Have a great Sunday. I'll check from time to time today to see how our boy is doing.

I just have to say one thing. I am so proud of the Barbaromaniacs in the way you welcomed & talked with Chad. This is an amazing group of people! I am a parent of a son with autism. I always say that I don't mind the autism. It is the way my son is treated by some of the "regular" people that can break my heart.
You were true to the spirit of Barbaro yesterday! And in my mind, there is no higher compliment!
    Thanks everyone!

Since I take nothing for granted about Barbaro's improving conditon, I get anxious when there is no early morning update, but I understand the difficulty on weekends. I have been so grateful for this site and enjoy many of the comments, prose and poetry emitted. Meanwhile, I count the days (24) since the devastating setback of sweet Barbaro, and hope that as more time elapses,Dr. Richardson can sound more optimistic. Believing in Barbaro has taken away and at the same time giving us energy to pour our heart and soul into this wonderful horse! For as long as it takes, I think we are all staying behind him!!

Good Morning Bobby & team Barbaro,

Along with everyone else - waiting for the good update.

Amy - I was touched by your message. You've obviously done a wonderful job of raising Chad.

Nancy in Ct. - loved the Barbaro interview!!!

To Tim and ShelleyA - running horses today - my prayers are for the safety of your horses and all others that are racing today. I just had a thought - I believe I will start and end every day not just praying for Bobby but for the safety of ALL horses - especially those racing (who seem to be at high risk right now).

Im off to Monmouth park to day, and here is "THE CALL" in its full form as I hope to hand delive it to Edgar Prado:

Mr. Prado, this is something I have been working on since Barbaro has been fighting his bout with Laminitis as well as healing the breaks in his right leg. I hope you can appreciate it, after all your efforts that day in the Preakness (I WAS THERE) you are the main reason why he is still here with us today…I began writing this July 15, 2 days after the Laminitis report….

HERE IS TOM DURKIN CALLING BARBAROS’ MOST IMPORTAINT RACE-------“And the last to load is BARBARO…..KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER…..UNDEFEATED,A WINNER ON GRASS,SLOP AND FAST TRACKS..MR BARBARO MAY JUST HAVE A DATE IN SARATOGA AT THE HALL IN HIS FUTURE”…….”And they’re off, And BARBARO stumbles BADLY out of the gate, Edgar Prado was lucky to stay aboard, he did a great job there, but BARBARO will have a hard time getting back into this race”. So as they head into the clubhouse turn BARBARO seems OK and settling back into stride…Then as they head into the turn something again is wrong with BARBARO….HE BOLTS..HE’S SPOOKED…Durkin then says,” WOW, whats with BARBARO today, he’s bolted on the turn, that’s 2 very costly, tragic happenings to BARBARO in this race, looks like BARBAROS’ done today”..BUT, BARBARO, being a TRUE CHAMPION once again gathers himself up and carries himself along the turn, but all looks HOPELESS as he’s 25 lengths out of it, it looks very bad today.
So Durkin contuinues to call the race as the field heads into the backstretch. Then suddenly something catches Durkin’s eye…..ITS BARBARO…HE’S BARBARO ONCE AGAIN…!!!!…”Ladies and Gentlemen, your not going to BELIEVE this but here comes BARBARO-----AGAIN!!!!!!!….HE’S NOT DONE, HE’S PICKING UP HORSES AT THE BACK OF THE PACK AND REALLY FLYING!!!!….If anyone can overcome these odds it’s BARBARO”, Durkin says, “And the way he’moving HE JUST MAY DO IT” !!!!!!!
(PART 2)…Durkin continues,”After the bizarre events which took place early, the likes of which this racecaller has never seen anyone recover from, BARBARO is actually going to be a presence in this race” exclaimed Durkin as the horses continued up the back stretch. “BARBARO has not only caught up to the field but passed a few horses , and now you can see he means business, ears pinned down and nostrils flairing, this ol’ boy of Dynaformer actually seems to be upset by these un fair turn of events that took place and is determined to make good. You frontrunner get ready for the onslaught, cause HERE COMES BARBARO!!!!!!
(PART 3)…And the horses thunder down the backstretch, but BARBARO still has lots of work to do. “He’s back in the race, says Durkin, “ but he’s not in his usual up close stalking position after the 2 mishaps that took place”. As the leaders begin to hit the far turn Durkin continues to call the position of the horses in the race by using names and colors to describe them in his adjective littered call….As he gazes thru is binocs and he sees those Blue, Green and White colors of LAEL STABLES, and begins agin to talk about the Jackson’s tremendous homebred…”And now BARBARO is back”, he says.” Here in mid-pack in an unlikely spot in both a bad and a good way, he’s usually closer up but with what happened today it’s already an amazing comeback”. Edgar pulls down a pair of goggles as he goes along, and he almost seems to be smiling now.. WHY COULD HE BE SMILING????DID WE NOT SEE THE BEST OF BARBARO ALREADY TODAY????…..”Edgar still has a handful of reins, he still seems to have a ton of horse under him”, says Durkin, “This could be a comeback of TITANIC proportion. Edgar is smiling like a guy holding 5 Aces, he knows he’s sitting on a time bomb waiting to explode, but after all the hardships thrown BARBARO’S way just how much is left in the tank????….But by the look on Edgars’ face and determination in BARBAROS eyes I’m not willing to bet against the miracle we just might see here today” exclaims Durkin. The crowds roar heightens with every stride of the horses now. You now also hear cries of “C’MON BARBARO, LETS GO BOY”, becoming more evident rising above the thunderous roars of the tens of thousands anticipating the tremendous finish that lies ahead….Durkin then says, ”Ladies and Gentleman buckle up cause this is one finish that no one is going to want to miss, it’s going to be the kind of finish that makes legends, and here comes that legend maker-----BARRRRRRRRBARO…….

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS, AS HE CONTINUES TO IMPROVE, WE WILL GET CLOSE AND CLOSER TO THAT FINISH LINE….WANT TO GUESS WHO’S GOING TO WIN????…

THANK YOU MR. PRADO FOR SAVING A GREAT HORSES LIFE…

Wonderful job, Mike - Edgar deserves all the thanks, prayers and gifts we can possibly bestow upon him. HE IS MY HERO in a story filled with many heroes...I've said it before here, and I'll say it again: when I saw how quickly that man halted an animal outweighing him by 10x, I was truly amazed. Edgar dug his heels into the ground until more help arrived, as if to say, "No way, boy, you're not taking another step!"
    Thanks for your efforts, Mike!

I've hesitated to post this because it's a bit long. A friend who has horses gave me a framed poster of this quote from The Outermost House by Henry Beston:

...In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.

    How appropriate--imho--Barbaro Nation.

Eagerly, but not anxiously, awaiting more Barbaro news.

Hello everyone, hi Chad, we all have to wait later for Alex to get the report. I guess we're lucky to get any report on the weekend , thanks to Alex. I can imagine what it must feel like standing in the lobby of NBC and seeing the tangible objects that express so much love to Barbaro. Hi Christine:

It probably is a bit early. Bobby's leg is still fusing (the right one) and he needs to grow a new hoof on the other. But the early reports from Dr R is that this is happening. But it will take months for Bobby to grow a whole new hoof.

The last I heard is that Dr R just doesn't know how to describe Bobby's condition. Is his prognosis still considered "poor"? His response was "I just don't know". But that every day that went by was just great.

I just like to think of this whole process as a miracle in the making. Between Dr R's incredible skill and knowledge, NBC's caring wonderful staff, and Team B--this horse has a shot that not many horses would have. His owners are great and wonderful people for not giving up.

Bobby until he walks out of that hospital can always have a setback. To me that's why I'm always thinking about him. Is this positive energy? I don't know. I just know I feel better when I think good thoughts for this horse.

I guess I'm being totally ineffectual here. I'm just trying to help keep you on "track" so to speak. Don't give up because your kind thoughts are "premature". Keep looking to the day when Bobby does walk out of the hospital. But keep in mind that this is a long and difficult path.

I'd like to think that's one of the reasons were here. To bolster each others courage when it starts failing for some reason. And thats the time to write in.

As for rehab I'm sure they won't just turn Bobby out in a field without helping him regain any muscle strength. Realize he has been on stall rest for two months now (coming up to three). Of course he has lost some muscle tone but that will all come back in due time.

I hope this helps. And please I wasn't trying to step on your toes, so I hope you don't take it that way.

    MM

    ((((DEAR ALEX,

I am asking you for this reason. I'm looking forward to a time when Bobby pulls away from being in an unsound condition, with the prospect of complications and setbacks all but behind him..and when he breaks into some sort of rehab/recovery phase where he can begin to get himself back... Is it premature to think about it?

Thanks so much for everything you do...I think we are all trying to be positive and look ahead...

Follow up question for Alex's post re Bernadini:

Why would Bern.'s connections want less press coverage, when Bernie is a contender for some awards? I'm not saying I disagree--just curious about the thought process re this aspect of racing. I suppose it's easier for his connections to focus on their goals and keep Bernie calm if there's less press.

Also, I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to this: What is the fastest speed, in terms of miles per hour, at which Barbaro was clocked?

Posted by: Susan E. at August 6, 2006 2:14 PM

    Big Strong Beautiful Boy,

Good morning Sweet Bobby, I am waiting to hear the good news from Alex... another ACN!!

Susan E...I found this little excerpt.
The final quarter mile of this year's Derby, 24.32 seconds, was the fastest since 1973 -- the year of Secretariat. Barbaro's final time was an excellent 2:01.36, which translated into a Beyer Speed Figure of 111. He looked as if he was capable of running much faster, if necessary."

    What's Beyer speed?

I did that yesterday too. Isn't it cool? I have alway been a novice at this, but everyone here has helped me learn so many wonderful things. Granted, I've also learned some distressing things too, but hey, we're working on those issues as well.

I have an aquiantance, Curt Johnson, who runs a stable here called SEJ stables with 17 TBs. So I put all of his horses in my stable too. My favorite is one called GOSPODIN. His lineage goes back to Native Dancer and War Admiral. (he lookes like War Admiral too)

So yes, this Virtual Stable will be fun for me to try. I hope to learn many things. I hope that you do too.

Morning, Barbaro! Hope you had a comfy night, you probably hit that snooze button this morning, so we'll patiently wait to hear how it went!

Big guy, hope you have a day filled with eats, treats, yummy hay and a few nips here and there. I'll be praying for you today, as usual, I'll be checking, too.

I am so sorry about Big Bunny, I'm praying for him, too. Everytime I see my backyard bunny, it reminds me to say a little prayer.

God bless Barbaro and all who care for him. Please keep blessing him with Your healing mercy.

    Have a good day everyone!

    Leslie,

Remember, you can get lots of good free information from equibase.com
On the left hand column, you can get results and entries for all the races at every track. The entries are usually up a few days before and the results are there shortly after the race.

Implicit to the nature of comments is a desire to respond.

Implicit to response is a desire to get to know another person(s) better.

Implicit to getting to know another person(s) better means comments.

I've seen very few, in all the posts I've read, pop in, make a comment directed to no one at all, and leave.

More than one comment constitutes a conversation.
Those who have instigated and participated in the silliness have taken it behind the scenes and apologized for it.

Those who have picked at them for indulging in humor have not apologized for their harsh words. So be it, I'm not condemning, simply expressing my observations.

I felt okay to return, as it seems things have returned to a peaceful state.

Thank you to not only Alex and Tim, for providing the forum for us to get to know about Barbaro, horseracing and related issues...and each other, but to all of you- who have contributed to my perspective on many issues.

Too few of us know our neighbors. And we're all neighbors.

Without this forum (or another like it), there likely wouldn't have been a vigil in the first place, as no one would have commented to another that it might be a good idea, much less had a way to organize it to reach so many.

There would remain parties interested in knowing a little more about horses or racing- uninformed.

The updates are posted at the top.
    The comments are icing.
As I see it, this site was created by Tim and Alex to promote horseracing, specifically, their own. They branched off into Barbaro, and have allowed us free reign, so to speak.

The site is still to promote their training/horseracing, and I hope and pray they are seeing- or will see- personal benefit from this. Heaven knows, they deserve it. They've gone above and beyond.
Barbaro is, of course, the main attraction- but not why the site was put up.

Thanks to you who have offered information, support, encouragement, and silliness. Whatever Barbaro can't use, we humans surely can.

    Susan E.
The reason is...when a horse is a major contender they can have an upward of 500 national and foreign press asking questions and hanging around the trainer and barn. It is disruptive to training and the horses.
Bob Baffert said this year, when he really didn't have much in the race "where is everybody"?
    Sometimes quiet is good.

I have read some of your posts, from saturday I believe. I wanted you to know that regardless of your decision on what will happen with this site I want to thank you for the time and energy that you have spent keeping us all updated here. As I have said before, you ease our souls with your daily updates. I hope that you will continue to do that. The people who post here are only a very small segment of those who care for Barbaro. There are now 1940 candles burning for Barbaro, 115 for Dr R, 17 for Mr Prado and 2 for NBC. You are one of the driving forces behind this support and will be blessed for your kindness.

    For Nancy in CT ...

Nancy, I was reading through a whole bunch of posts from yesterday that I hadn't read until just this morning ... I found these two from you:

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE LINNIE IS? I had directed my "Barbaro hat experience" story to her attention, and Alex was kind enough to post it up top, but I haven't seen anything from Linnie in days so I don't know if she saw the story. It was inspirational to others (and that's great!), but I wanted her to see it specifically because she had posted about being at the computer wearing HER Barbaro hat and feeling connected to him through the hat.
    Maybe she's just on vacation??

Posted by: Nancy in CT at August 5, 2006 02:51 PM

SHELLEY A - thanks so much - it was so frustrating to start to email Laura as requested and realized that I'd blown it on the email!

Now if I can just fine LINNIE again...

FOR ALL YOU EDGAR PRADO FANS...he's on Strong Contender today going up against Bluegrass Cat in the Haskell Invitational. While I don't normally root AGAINST ANY HORSE (they are all Barbaro's buddies, after all), I am cheering Edgar on because he is one of my heroes for his intitial quick-thinking and display of physical strength in "rescuing" Barbaro so quickly!!
...so, onward, Strong Contender, and SAFE HOME to all running today!

Posted by: Nancy in CT at August 5, 2006 03:38 PM

When I wrote you last night, I hadn't yet read these posts so I now realize that you were trying to 'contact' me yesterday and thought I wasn't here or was on vacation.

I have been 'here' every single day, but I don't post a lot ... only when I want to comment on someting about Barbaro or his condition or about some other aspect of his recovery. I do other things, of course, and I have other sites and hobbies of interest that I frequent. I was also offline for a large part of Friday and for awhile yesterday with other 'life' activities.

Again, if I didn't respond to your post about the Barbaro Hat, I truly do apologize but I did read your story and I did also see it in a special 'place of honor' at the top of the page recently. In fact, I know that I commented about that because I also thanked Alex for excerpting one of my posts at the top of his page also and I alluded to your post as well.

In any case, your "Barbaro Hat" story was heartwarming and wonderful ... I enjoyed reading it very much!!

Amy Kingsley and Chad, while I wasn't able to read Chad's comments, it was a delight to read both of your feelings. Isn't it amazing how one horse has brought everyone together on behalf of all horses and the people they own?

Susan E-thank your aunt for providing the amusing "job Interview."

Mike C- I never said anything about your call, but it is wonderful, and I hope that you can share it with Mr. Prado today.

I like to think that Barbaro would approve! BOTTOM LINE - from what I've been reading lately on this site and other places, I just peek out from between my fingers and pray for a safe race for EVERY horse & jockey!

FYI - I was born in New Haven, live in Hamden.
Do you have horses in FL? I don't have any, just love them to pieces! If you ever saw any of the New Haven police horses....they are the ones that got me "hooked."

Leslie in MN - trick for reading (current) posts in larger typesize (font) - type anything into the "comments" box, then hit Preview, and start scrolling down. The comments associated with the current update are there. You can view the whole set of comments in larger type by clicking on "View" at the top of your screen and then click on "Text Size" and you can select a largest or larger text (font) size. I was getting bleary and discovered this trick a couple of weeks ago, and have passed it on whenever I see somebody like you kvetching (complaining) about how small the print is. (With some things, size DOES matter, haha.) You're welcome for the tip - please pass it on.

Can hardly wait for our daily Barbaro update - maybe one came in while I was reading - I am absobloominlutely confident it is another good one. Nothing but good ones from now on - am I a cock-eyed optimist, or what?

Speaking of optimism, one of my anecdotes cries to be published. When I took my rescue OTTB (Washington Leader, barn name "George") with a broken leg (splint bone; all it needed was to be removed, btw, and plenty of rehab) - I'd been a bareback rider for so long that I no longer owned a saddle. I knew I'd need one for this guy. The day I walked him 3-legged from the trailer to his new home at T Bar J, where I boarded Joe, my old QH, I went to the local feed store/tack shop, plunked down a down payment, and arranged to make payments on a saddle for a horse with a broken leg. THAT, my friends, is the height of optimism.

He did recover, was one of only two horses I ever owned who never dumped me, and I found him a job at a riding school [when he did not enjoy trailriding due to bug sensitivity], from where (I'm told} he was adopted by a student who fell in love with him.

Hope Peace Love - CJ the craziest catlady (Blackie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond, IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

I, like you, just pray that every horse and jockey gets around that track safe. That is my primary concern. After what happened to Barbaro, I have not watched a race since and probably will find it very hard to do so again.

Good morning Barbaro and how are you today? Hope you had a very comfortable night. I have said many prayers for you today and also for your doctors and owners too. May God watch over you and keep you in his healing hands!

Again, Thanks Alex for keeping this board up and running. The updates about Bobby are so important to us and also the wonderful comments from all who love Bobby.

Posted by: Bea in NJ at August 6, 2006 3:27 PM

While awaiting update, wanted to take this opportunity to say, thank you is never sufficient; it is beyond words, what I feel toward all those committed to saving Barbaro - most especially Edgar Prado, the Jacksons, Michael Matz, Dr. R and staff at NBC, and or course to Alex and Tim, and Peter Brette et al for the updates and this site.

And a warm welcome to all the newcomers and a glad-you're-still-here to all the rest of you.

Otherlyn, I feel for you with the loss of your bunny. Glad you were able to spend some quality time together.

Margaret, thanks for giving the larger font advice to Leslie; you beat me to it, but both our hearts are definitely in the right place, right?

Hoping that every horse who starts a race today, finishes upright and in one piece. Those who have not been so lucky, will affect the big picture in the long run. (candle site for them under group name Angel at http://www.gratefulness.org)

Now where is that darned update? I can hardly wait to be kvellin' mit nachas [rejoicing in good things happening to a loved one] once again!

Good morning Barbaro, Just wanted to check on you before I head back to the track. Hope for an update later. I am sure you had a lovely nights rest, and enjoyed your visit with Peter yesterday. You keep healing, I love you lots.

For anyone interested, we have a nice guy in race #4 this afternoon at Assiniboia Downs, Spontaneous Wood. Please pray for a a safe run. Just left him and he's happy today.

Tomorrow one of my favs Hat Trick , she just broke her maiden about 2 weeks ago. She is in Race #4 as well, Praying for another safe run.

Last night we had an exciting second place win with Shawhan, he's the one who eats my hair, and reminds me of Barbaro... there is a picture of him at pedigree query.

So there ya go, some more wonderful horses you can cheer on and add to your virtual stable.

Champ, I will check on you later, you enjoy your day, and many many prayers for continued healing.

Funny story about Alibi....I usually go in the paddock when my horses are saddled. But Alibi is such a peppermint "freak" that when he sees me that's all he thinks of. So I hide from him before the race so that he will focus and not be looking for his peppermints. He's not that experienced yet and can't separate things.

WHAT A FINE JOB YOU'VE DONE THERE! It was great to see Gallant Secret - what a beautiful lady she was! I noted that her blaze is quite similar to Barbaro's...I've heard various theories about what Barbaro's resembles, but I always thought it looked like a tornado, which may explain his strength and determination on the track and, more importantly, his strength and determination in his recovery process.

Pray, mediate, light candles...whatever your spiritual preference, send positive energies to Barbaro and all his people, and remember the beauties we've lost needlessly!

I had a thought in the middle of the night.

I don't know what the percentages supposedly are on Bobby's full recovery, but whatever they are, they are based on the average horse. Bobby finishes whatever he starts and comes out ahead. He does not know what it is to lose a battle; he has never done so, not once. So the percentages applicable to other horses, who win some lose some, and occasionally back off -- these are not applicable to Bobby, who only knows one percentage figure: 100%.

    Go, Bobby!

I am so very glad to hear about all the people who LOVE Barbaro. WE have 4 horses. We recently had twin fillies. That happens once in 10,000 births. We were so lucky to have brought the mare and the filly immediately to the Wisconsin Vet School in Madison, Wisconsin. Today Bianca is 11 months old with mother standing close to her. We lost the other filly at birth. MOney is no object when you love your horses as much as we do. It was wonderful to hear that so much is being done for Barbaro. Barbaro is a fighter. Barbaro will win!!! How could Barbaro not get better with all the people in the world who are saying prayers and lighting candles. What a magnificent and special horse!!!!!!!

I have been talking about Bobby, lighting candles, horse racing, the breeders Cup, ESPN's lousy updates on Bobby and terrible coverage of horse racing in general and trying to find riding lessons where I live. All about Bobby, horses and racing. I have seen the same from everyone else, yet still people are unhappy. You cant please all the people all the time.....

I just wanted to tell you that one of our quarter
horses had twins also. We didn't know that our
mare was pregnant with two, so it was quite the
surprise. She had a filly and horse colt...both
lived. They always thought they were stars be-
cause of the press attention, and just attention
in general, that they got. Since the odds are

I posted this last night but not to many people were on so I'm re-posting today.

I have a favor to ask all of you. Can someone find out how many horses have run in the last 12-24 months at all big tracks and then figure out how many horses have been put down or injured. I think these numbers are important - when sending emails to our contacts - about the petition for the polytrack installation - if we could include these numbers in our emails - I think that would make a HUGE difference. Lets say that 1000 horses races and 100 were put down (I know that is a bogus number)- I think that would make a huge difference in people signing the petition. I know this is a lot of work - I would be happy to do it - but I have no clue as to how to find these numbers.

I will post this again in the AM for those who have gone to bed. I'm just disgusted!!!

The reason I'm asking is that I read last night that 44 horse were put down at Santa anita last year and 33 at Hollywood Park - and then everything that has happened this year - I'm just disgusted!

    Hello, All,

Thank you for your kind words of comfort. Big Bunny was a special boy. We had him for 7 years. He was a house-bunny,who lived had a large pen in our family room. He NEVER nipped. He was a snuggly, sweet, and beautiful Checkered Giant.
Some people might say, "c'mon...it's just a rabbit...", but, we all know that there is no such thing as "just a," ...don't we? When you looked into his eyes, you could see an old soul there.

He had been losing weight for several weeks. My vet was puzzled. We tried several things, but nothing worked. In the last few weeks, it seemed that his greatest comfort was just to be held. We will miss him.

Now, this part of the message is for you guys that live here in Connecticut. I've been looking for a cookie cutter in the shape of a horse, and can't locate one for the life of me. I've tried Joanne's, Michael's, Walmart, Target, Price Chopper, Shaws, Stop and Shop, etc to no avail. I thought maybe you guys may have an idea as to where I can get one. I'm planning on making our Bobby some more of the apple cookies he loved so much, and wanted to make them in horse shape. If you know of some place, send me an e-mail at I_Luv_Barbaro@sbcglobal.net My newest address in honor of our boy! Thanks, and have a great Sunday!

Several days ago I was reminiscing about Secretariat and I commented that I had written a tribute to him a few years ago that I would share with the rest of you. I had forgotten to do that until just now, so if you will please indulge my unrestricted feelings and emotions, I would greatly appreciate it.

    "BIG RED"

Unparalleled in your quest for excellence all those years ago, when “Triple Crown” winners were just a vague remembrance among those who followed the annual spring ‘rite of passage’ - the “run for the roses” at Churchill Downs ... the “Preakness Stakes” at Pimlico ... and the final proving ground of stamina and heart for only the truest of champions in Belmont, New York.

“New York, New York” ... ‘If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere’ ... and you made it, “Big Red”. you silenced all the naysayers who doubted that a long-lost forgotten triple crown would be reclaimed after a drought of 25 years, when “Citation” ruled the world of thoroughbred racing back in 1948. But this was 1973, and it was time. Time to awaken even the most cynical minds to the glory still to be. And it was your time, and as it has been said over and over again, “timing is everything”.

You possessed the quintessential measure of nobility among your peers - fearless determination of spirit, enduring perseverance of body, and the physical presence to give much more. You competed only with yourself, as you envisioned all challengers as merely an aberration to accelerate your own driving force for achievement. You never wavered As you kept your unflinching “eye on the prize”.

But you were the prize, “Big Red”, and the passion instilled in each of us will never be forgotten, as we indelibly reminisce with renewed enthusiasm your derby record of 1:59 2/5 which stands to this day ... your would-be record at Pimlico which was ‘stolen’ only by the mechanism of a mal-functioning timer ... and finally, your unquestioned 31-length triumph at belmont while the haunting commentary still lingers ...
“He is running like a tremendous machine.”

And that is the dichotomy of “Big Red” ... machine-like in performance, yet remarkably overshadowed by the most gallant heart the “Sport of Kings” will ever realize. And This is the stuff dreams are made of.

So, here’s to you, “Big Red”, the hero who moved mountains. You carried yourself with pride like the genuine champion you would always be because you never gave up ... you trusted your own abilities ... and you made us all believe that
we alone create our own miracles.

LOVE,HEALING,AND HOPE TO BARBARO! Read a great article on Dr.Palmer of the New Jersey Equine Clinic who was invited to Preakness by M.Matz and he put the splint on Barbaro at the track. Thought Barbaro was surrounded by people who enabled him to have a chance--from Edgar to Dr. R to the staff at NBC to the owners and trainer, and then the incrediable intelligence of Barbaro. SPECIAL PEOPLE AT A SPECIAL TIME FOR A SPECIAL HORSE. Then all of us who love him who continue to pray for his recovery.

It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons. ~Douglas Adams, The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Several folks have mentioned the Breyer models of Barbaro that will be available this fall. Breyer is donating $10.00 from each sale to the Barbaro Fund.

I remembered that some time ago, someone else on this board had mentioned that Golden Oak Stables was donating an additional $7.50 from each sale to the Barbaro Fund. I'm assuming these are the same models since they are a Breyer authorized reseller.

If anyone wants to order it looks like Golden Oak Stables will be donating a total of $17.50 to the Barbaro Fund.

A nice article for those who might interested.
Sorry if it was already posted. I liked it because they shed more light on the Jackson's visiting Barbaro

    By Dan Gelston
    ASSOCIATED PRESS

    12:22 a.m. August 2, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. – By now, Barbaro should have been close to casting aside any doubts that he could make a full recovery from the devastating right hind leg injuries he suffered at the Preakness.
Instead, the Kentucky Derby winner still has a tedious, long recovery ahead because of the often-fatal disease that's stricken his left hind leg.

Dr. Dean Richardson said Tuesday that the painful hoof disease the Kentucky Derby winner has is preventing the cast on his right hind from being removed because the colt could not protect himself by bearing more weight on the left hind.
Barbaro suffered life-threatening injuries when he broke three bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the May 20 Preakness.

“If he hadn't had the founder (laminitis) on his left hind, he'd probably be out of the cast and he'd probably be in a splinted bandage on the shoe,” Richardson said in a telephone interview. “That's where we'd likely be. I can't do that because his left hind is the more sore of the two legs right now.”

Barbaro's left hind hoof, which was stricken with a severe case of laminitis, is improving and started to show slight signs of re-growing after 80 percent of it was removed. Barbaro needs to regrow the hoof if he is to have any shot of walking – albeit with a hitch in his gait.

Barbaro, still in stable condition, has the bandage on his left hind foot changed daily.

“It's too early to see true hoof wall forming,” Richardson said from the New Bolton Center. “But the coronary band, the part of the hoof that's the equivalent of the nail bed where the hoof is going to grow down from, that looks very good. It's too early to see a lot.”

Barbaro has been in an intensive care stall at the George D. Widener Hospital since his horrific injuries in the second race of the Triple Crown series. Barbaro sustained a broken cannon bone above the ankle, a broken sesamoid bone behind the ankle and a broken long pastern bone below the ankle. The fetlock joint – the ankle – was dislocated.

Richardson said after performing surgery the pastern bone was shattered in “20-plus pieces.” With the X-rays in the right hind showing almost all the injuries healed, Richardson could have removed the cast.

“If they looked perfect and there was no chance of it breaking, I'd take him out of the cast,” he said.

Richardson was concerned the 3-year-old colt would try to put too much weight on the rear hind if the cast was removed. Richardson said the left rear hoof has to regrow and stay healthy.

Richardson said the colt's prognosis was “poor” after it was stricken with laminitis, but eased off that grim outlook Tuesday.

“I don't know. Every day that goes by, it's great,” he said. “He has so long to go I don't even think about the prognosis. We just work on the horse and hope he continues to be happy.”

Barbaro looks bright and happy with a voracious appetite to those who see him. Owner Gretchen Jackson usually visits twice daily to feed Barbaro fresh-cut grass from her nearby farm.

“It makes me feel better about the poor guy stuck in there,” she said. “He likes it.”

Jackson and her husband, Roy, said they look at Barbaro's recovery as a day-to-day process and try not to let their emotions ride too high over good news or get discouraged over changes in his condition.

“Just looking at him, he hasn't changed at all from the way he's been all along,” she said. “If you had that as all you could go by, you couldn't believe he wasn't going to make it.”

It's been a month since the surgery to replace the plate and the bone graft on the pastern. I'm thinking two weeks from now all is healed and solid, but I'm only going on human terms.. The left is doing well and will continue to heal and grow...and I like to think in super fast time...That would be Barbaro...

    >>I guess I'm being totally ineffectual here. I'm just trying to help keep you on "track" so to speak. Don't give up because your kind thoughts are "premature". Keep looking to the day when Bobby does walk out of the hospital. But keep in mind that this is a long and difficult path.>>

    For which I thank you.

That's why I'm thinking about swimming pools (don't know if they have one) ...and treadmills...and hand walking outside and lots of neat stuff coming up... (Too bad I'm in fast forward..)

    >>I hope this helps. And please I wasn't trying to step on your toes, so I hope you don't take it that way.>>

Of course not. I appreciate it very much. Thanks Margaret.

    Hi
My last post was for you re: Del Mar webcam.

    Posted by: Marilyn/CA at August 6, 2006 6:03 PM

Ok I have another question. Some of you might think it is a dumb one but remember I do not know much about horses everything I know I have learned here. What is a filly? I thought a baby horse is a pony?

Posted by: karann at August 6, 2006 6:04 PM

a filly is a femal horse under the age of 4 or 5, can't remember. then they become a mare.

a pony is a "horse" under 14 hands, they are usually bred as ponies in the first place.

not dumb questions at all, karann.

I have a similar question as Karann - a male horse is a colt until when? He is gelded or put up for stud then he is a stallion? All these terms are confusing.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 6, 2006 6:07 PM

Karann - Filly: A female horse less than five years of age. Over five is a mare

    Good Morning Everyone

Special note to Amy and Chad You are both so special and it's wonderful to see you here. I've always found that sites such as this make great foundation for new and old metaphors and life principles. We see only what we read and just as in every other life experience, should judge not, lest you be judged, there is more to one than what appears on the surface, etc., etc. There is a common thread here and that's all that matters. Look at how many people there are here from all over the country, and on the Penn State message board for Barbaro, there are posters from all over the world. Salient point here is that we are all with diverse backgrounds, cultures and histories, but we all come together to share our love of this horse and the wonderful people who are part of his life, which is facilitated by still other wonderful people. Isn't that just the greatest thing? Are we not so similar after all? I think so :)

Thank you all for your prayers and good wishes. Alibi got off to a bad start from the 10th postition (and he's still a little green) but he sure made up for it. Jose Flores gave him a great ride and we were very happy with his performance. He showed heart and didn't give up.

Just came from the barn and he seems like he came out of it fine. Has a little boo boo on his right front leg(not sure how that happened) but it's nothing serious. Gave him his peppermints and when I left him, he was happily eating hay and seemed pretty pleased with himself.

Thanks again to you all. It really meant a lot for my peace of mind

Your Smarty's Gift website is wonderful. All of your horses are so beautiful too. I've got them all in my stable to watch their progress. Mr Boxcar is a hoot!!

Did I miss something about you wanting to leave?
    If so, please dont.

Thanks for the ACN update, Alex. How lovely to know that Peter was touched by the NBC lobby display.

Thanks to everyone for the great posts today. Linnie, I loved yours on Secretariat. I hope Mary L (I think it's she?) will post more when she feels able.

Chad, I really enjoy your posts. I liked the Carrots too, and miss their fun. I don't know if they're meeting somewhere else, but maybe one of them will let you know. Say Hi to your Mom. She sounds like a great lady.

Shelly A, I'm so glad your Alibi is home safe!

Barbaro, you are so beautiful. I miss new pictures of you, but I know you're happy and healing. I love you, sweetie. Sending you much love and light.

Debbie B...Active X is the thing that allows script and images from the web to be displayed thru internet explorer...I think it will give you a prompt when it is needed, and it should give you the option of installing it should you need it...the bar directly above this web page turns yellow, on my computer...

Gee that sounded so intelligent...I hope it is right...!

Hi, Chad! I'm glad to see you.
I don't think anyone meant you or your mom. I was so happy that she wrote.

I wanted to tell you that I think your writing is coming along great. I see that you are having trouble with spelling and things, but you are very clear at getting your ideas across to people, and your feelings, too. I hope you are showing your postings to your teacher. I think he would be proud of you. (And of himself! :) ) Show him this posting, too, if you want.

Did you see the pictures of the thoroughbred babies? Someone posted them for you not too long ago. Just let us know if you missed it and one of us will give you the link again.

xoxo to your mom; tell her not to worry. Eventually we will be in a chat room and we can hang out there. Until then, believe me, nobody wants you to go away, and we will all keep writing to you here and that will be fine with everyone.

You are the heart and spirit of Barbaro, so this is ALL ABOUT BARBARO!! :)

    Hello all, Chad's mom here,

I don't want anyone to think that Chad is being run off. He showed me a post that mentioned the need for many here to go to a chat room.
Chad believed that it was directed at me. He is protective of me. I read the post. It could be about me, who knows. I told Chad to cool, remember the rules and decide. He took his time and prayed about it. He said the same thing he wrote. He does not want to anger 1 person in here or be angry himself. Chad knows that he'll drift onto other subjects and he is not good at ignoring his emotions. He just left for his summer job. I'll make sure he reads all replies later. He is soooo proud about his new friends. I'll ask him if he wants to post his email. Bless all of you who have been so kind.

    Chad,

I am confused. I have read what I think is every-
thing today and I don't know to what you are re-
    ferring?

I am not in the cp nor do I wish to be, but as far
as insults to your mother I have seen none of what
you are talking about. Even though I am not a fan
of the cp group I want to say that I think that
there has been some mistake here.

The board seems to have moved along relatively
well today, so please let's keep it going in the
    right direction.

I suppose I am not supposed to comment, but these
comments are in the interest of keeping the
peace, not to engender more conflict. No one
needs it, whatever group you consider yourself to
    be a part.

    ah Chad:

I think I know the post your mom was talking about. Don't listen.

I only saw one post of yours yesterday. You seem like you love animals. That's terrific. And you love Bobby--makes you one of us.

Your mom came in here and thanked people for being kind to you. And they talked back and said hello.

There was no reason for the post that person posted. Your mom loves you and wants to protect you. Surely most of us can understand that? She was being polite.

So please, I hope both of you will stay. Alex makes the rules. Not us.

Can I tell two secrets? Shhh. This is only for you.

Do you know why a horse has such a long face? Cause he's feeling down in the dumps when people are mean to others for NO GOOD REASON.

Do you know how a horse laughs? He raises his upper lip way up in the air. Kinda like stuck up people! Now you have to use your imgination a little bit. here is a link

    http://home.comcast.net/~michaelsmiracle/new_page_7.htm

that I want you to use. At the bottom is a page with Bobby's head way up in the air. He's getting a bath. Now if his upper lip was raised outward then he'd be laughing at all of us!

Have fun. And hang out for a spell with us. Bobby would want you too! I just sent him a horseyemail.

    Dear Barbaro:

Since I can?t come in person I was wondering if you would take a moment to answer a few email questions?

MM: At Tim?s site there seems to be some confusion over whether or not a parent can come in and politely thank people for being kind to her child. Do you have any feelings on this matter?

Barbaro: Snorts and shakes. Puts a hoof to the side of his head. Gives a very withering look and says. You people can?t decide from day to day who you are going to go after. Sometimes it this group. And other days it?s another. Why can?t you just get along already.

    MM: Well.

Barbaro: Really. Now you?re picking on a parent? Wow. Glad my mom hasn?t seen this site. She wouldn?t let me come near it for fear of a nuclear meltdown.

MM: I thought studs were suppose to fight with each other.

Barbaro: Really? Just who do you suppose would make sure I was being taken care of if I went after Dr R every time he came near me? Let me tell you; some days the things I put up are awful. But do you see me fighting with my caretakers? Be like me. Be like Barbaro. That?s what you guys always say. Prove it to me.

    Anyone interested.

I was just speaking to my Mom, and she reminded me of something from childhood. I am an Urbanite and know very little about horses, except that I love them. when I was a little girl, my parents had a German friend who had an Arabian horse farm. Her prized possession at the time was Miss Brazil. She was beautiful, but had one quirk, if anyone sat down on a stool in her stall she would park her behind on that person's lap. Since I was small I was warned not to, but my Dad made the mistake.

Just wanted to share a happy memory.

I'm with you....I've seen mega-posts complaining about content with no mention of Bobby or many contributions from the complainers.

Let's see some. And Alex, I know you are busy, but there are some of us who truly care about each other. It would be nice to keep us together so we can check on the UPDATES you so kindly give us everyday and chat away.

And yes, I have been on here since it was set up and I have answered questions both here and in many emails.

    Love to family,

The thing about Barbaro is that he's not just flesh and blood. That's easy. Barbaro is uniquely special because he epitomizes heart and courage and grace, and that's why most of us love him so much. We can all learn from him, and should.

These horses should not work on hard pavements amongst the traffic on NYC Streets. They should be in Central Park only on DIRT Paths. Even then they should never be out working when the temperature is above 85 degrees!

    Ernie,

Thank you so much for the Carriage Horse. I have been signing petitions to stop the practice for years. I support the NY ASPCA and they have been wonderful, and making sure that in summer months once the air temperature reaches 90 degrees, to make sure all of the horses are off the streets.

I can't seem to get into barbaro_maniacs@yahoogroups.com...I will continue to try though because I truly care about the people here. I don't want to loose contact with the wonderful people who have so graciously let us into their lives...their struggles and triumphs. I am deeply saddend because it appears that as the Barbao Effect grows and spreads accross the globe there are still people who are missing the true meaning of what is happening. We are here because we care...and to be able to care for an animal or people we have never met is such a gift. I am leaving my e-mail address for anyone who would like to keep in touch in the spirit of love and kindness...I would love to hear from anyone in the Carrot Possee...God bless you for your comaraderie, Lyn Gilbert, Susan W, Chad and his Mom, Ernie and now as I type so many onthers I could never feel as though I could list you all. This experience has been a blessing...I have always loved horses and now that my Dad has passed I wasn't able to really share that with anyone who would understand. This site not only filled a void in my life but acted as a means of calming my worries about Barbaro. It is sad it could not have been seen as the blessing it was instead of a sounding board for those who feel the need to judge how others connect.
Please forgive me for taking up space, I just would feel so bad if any of you left without me having a way to stay in touch. God bless you all from the bottom of my heart for not only sending prayers to Sweet Bobby, but for healing a space in my heart as well. You will never be forgotten!

Again, we are trying to set up a temporary chatroom because it has become imperative.

Please still try to set up a chatroom for us here, though. We are concerned about throwing this open on a forum like yahoo and attracting trolls; inevitably they will make their way here because one of us will forget to be discreet and will mention your message board.

    Posted by: Marilyn/CA at August 6, 2006 9:28 PM

Cindy...you sound like my kinda carrot...so welcome! I think people are looking forward to a possible chat room, and they really want it yesterday...because somehow the neg comments are creeping back in today...In a way, I wish it were never mentioned because it opened the flood gates for people to start deciding who they wanted to go there...
I too love this site...Bobby is just about all I think about these days...just don't tell my pets...I want him to make it so badly that I can't express it adequately in words...I just know that I love this horse.
I have also learned so much about horses, here...

Here's another option, as Marilyn in Cali mentioned:
    www.ezboard.com

I've participated in both public and private boards on that site- it isn't free, it's about $10 for three months. When you split the cost, it's very reasonable. Private means you have to be invited by a moderator- and no one can see what you post.
Public means that whoever is traipsing through ezboard's site can read your posts.

just a thought. The boards offer a discussion forum and live chat, both.
    Anna

    Anna
How much does the private chatroom cost on ezboard?

    Posted by: Marilyn/CA at August 6, 2006 9:31 PM

um, the moderator would be whoever opened the account or was appointed by whoever opened the account. It's all the group's doing, not an outside entity.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 6, 2006 9:37 PM

Should we have Anna set up a private room on ezboard instead, for $10, and just use it until we can come back here?

    Posted by: Marilyn/CA at August 6, 2006 9:37 PM

WHAT IS GOING ON NOW? 36 hours of relative peace - some humor (see "Job Applicant" at top of page and my post at 11:02 am), lots of Barbaro & other horses, the wonderful addition of Chad, messages of concern for people who have lost pets, had horses racing today or have illness issues - I thought, "OK, Nance, it's good to be here."
SO I LEFT FOR A FEW HOURS to do some gardening - should have planted CARROTS instead of the TEMPERMENTAL flowers I was working with all afternoon - came back to the site and saw one of the cruelest messages since I've been posting. I won't even dignify it by identifying the time - you all know what I mean if you've read everything today.

Thanks to those of you who enjoyed my interview with Barbaro late last night (and reposted 11:02 am today). Lots of people enjoyed the laugh, but here's the real joke: it wasn't really meant to be funny - the message from Barbaro in the last line was the point!!!!

I don't have time to bounce around from site to site, chat room to message board etc. so I guess the only option for me is to continue posting at the NBC site (never have seen one of my messages there, but that's ok) and checking in here just for Alex's updates - bless him for that!!!

Feel free to email me if you want: mllebutterfly@sbcglobal.net

So again, anyone who has access to Mary's room please go there and post DISCREET warnings -- see 9:33 above. Sally, I know you are not quite on yet; I just don't know if anyone else who's signed on is reading this right now.

Yes I do, Jeri. I felt lots of grace and power and love here yesterday. It WAS great...

This is a diverse group of people with different backgrounds, personalities and points of view, but you are all valuable in your unique way and we are ALL united in one MAGNIFICENT horse..

Posted by: Pamela at August 6, 2006 9:50 PM

I would like to comment on all these injuries and deaths of the horses. Since it is not the surfaces of the tracks, and they have ample vets on board, could it have something to do with the inexplicable HEAT?. We suffer in it so why not the horses - running their hearts out on the tracks.
They are bred to run and I think its obvious they are suffering in the HEAT.
Let me know what you think about this.
    Thank You.
    Respectifully, Joyce E.

I think I can moderate this board for a little while longer so it doesn't fall apart...

But someone else should deal with the chatroom aspects.

It can be set up through Mary L, apparently, or on ezboards through Anna....

Joyce - I have thought the same thing - it has been so hot on the east coast and i cannot believe these horses race. The air is hot - they are racing their brains out - only getting hotter. I'm glad to know about the hot walkers - letting them cool down naturally giving them a little water at a time. But still - its been too damn hot for racing. Hell - I don't even go outside unless I have to!!! hahaha

Please do not leave. I search for your emails because they are so easy to understand - you write from the heart. I would like to order bracelets for both of you when they are available. If that is ok, email your home address to me at dbbandrsn@yahoo.com and I will give it to Skyler. (I promise not to share your email or home address with anyone.)
Alex and Tim, how I look forward each day to your updates and posts. Thank you so very much -you will never know how much this site means to all of us.
Dear Barbaro, Sweet Prince, you are never out of my thoughts. Stay the course and so will we. God bless.

Joyce...HI...I think you raise an excellent point...I think it is a shame that all tracks don't have a manditory shut down past a certain temperature...that way, there doesn't have to be
one track wondering, worrying about whether they should close...

    Hola Barbaro Nation and CP

Just left a message for Amy and Chad on their answering machine. I am so sorry this is happening. I believe that Chad can handle a lot. Even if we cannot reach him he is very intuitive. He sensed correctly that he and his mom were in for a bashing. I did not see this coming.

He knows so much about Barbaro and horse racing. He loves the Kentucky Derby and knows all the winners and their times since 1995.

CP you guys are awsome in your self control. Tears in my eyes. Will post later. Dave I LOVE you. I'll respond to emails soon.

as long as barbaro's coat is shiny and his eyes are clear and sparkly, that's a great sign. he will regain muscle and tone once he's able to at least be in a corral. he's still so young, he's still growing....

    Sally -- people will be reacting to things they just saw, that happened an hour ago. They will huff up and post. You'll need to catch them and say that we are all staying calm until we can have a private chat room of some sort. You must also calm down anyone who wrote something above, and is catching heat -- you have to be totally evenhanded even if you disagree with their post or whatever, and just calm them down... You were here for a lot of it, you saw what I was doing...There are some neutral topics now, so that will help. I'll wait for you to say you read this, then I'll go. I'll hurry back.     Thank you Alex for telling us that about the photos. Perhaps its just they want Bobby left alone? Privacy issues? He isn't major "news" anymore? These are just questions, observations, thoughts. No one answer is any more "right" than any other;

Wow HOY would be tough this year if Bobby weren't in the running. Bernardini ran a great race but then so did Bluegrass Cat. That it'll be a great match when it does happen.

But Bobby still would have my vote for HOY. I haven't see a thing worthy enough to make me change my mind.

You need someone to take over "kiddy daycare" duty? I'm here but starting to loose my cool over this bull.
Are we all supposed to be mature adults who are here for the same reason??? For those of you who don't like us, go fight with someone else!!!

We are a group that has gotten very close. We share our love and concerns over Barbaro (and, yes, that includes Chad!) Do you realize how fortunate we are that he is doing well so that we can sometimes discuss other things.

We wait for Alex's updates and cheer when he has another comfortable night. Then we try to do some good with other horse related issues.

Barbaro has doctors and tons of people that take care of him. We are fortunate that they let us into his world. There's nothing physically that any of us can do. We do the best we can. That doesn't mean that if one of us is hurting, we shouldn't be able to turn to each other for help.
That's what friends do and I would like to think that we have become friends.

Apparently, not everyone feels that way. I don't blame Alex at all if he finally says enough is enough. Then what.....we all loose! The issues won't be addressed because we will have lost touch with each other
And many of us will have lost touch with some very dear friends.

Now I have to take a deep breath!!!!

Alex...am ROFLMAO...at your reference to Blue Grass Cat as "one of Bobby's Derby victims!" That was great...wish I had thought of that one myself!

That is why I would like to see Cat beat Bernardini in the Travers...just one more victim..LOL

Posted by: Pamela at August 6, 2006 10:17 PM

Why does there seem to be so much hatred here now? Can that kind of energy really be good for Barbaro? Everyone is entitled to their thoughts, and sentiments. Everybody deals with things differently, who is to say which way is the right way. Can't we all just focus on the issue at hand which is sending Barbaro all of the positive energy, healing thoughts and prayers that we can?

Off of my soapbox now, I just think it is sad to see this venue used for arguing.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO IS SIGNING THE PETITION FOR IMPROVING HORSE & JOCKEY SAFETY!!!
EVERY VOTE COUNTS FOLKS> KEEP EM COMING THE COUNT IS RISING!!!

    August 4, 2006

    Dear Wm,

I have tremendous news to share with you!
Last night, the U.S. Senate passed two important animal protection measures: One will save pets during disasters, and the other will protect exotic species by closing the infamous "taxidermy tax scam" loophole.
These victories would not have been possible without your actions and support. By contacting your lawmakers or telling your friends and family about our legislative work, you have made a real and lasting impact on the lives of animals. Here are more details on last night's major wins for animals:

Victory for America's Pets (and their People)
The U.S. Senate unanimously approved its version of the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act. The U.S. House of Representatives passed its version in May by an overwhelming vote. Congress has taken an important step in ensuring that Americans will never again be forced to leave their pets behind when disaster strikes, as happened during Hurricane Katrina.
The bill passed by the House calls for emergency preparedness plans to include consideration of people with pets and service animals before a disaster strikes. The Senate bill contains additional and strengthening provisions. The Humane Society of the United States supports both bills, but we hope the House will take up and approve the Senate version because it is more comprehensive. We are approaching the one-year mark of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and hurricane season is upon us again. Final passage of the PETS Act will be a priority when Congress returns from recess in September. More...

Victory for Hunted Exotics (and Taxpayers)
For years, big game trophy hunters have been sticking American taxpayers with the bill for their hunting vacations. A two-year investigation by The HSUS revealed that some trophy hunters are shooting rare animals around the world and donating their mounted prizes to phony museums so that they can take a tax deduction. A comprehensive pensions bill passed last week by the House and last night by the Senate contains provisions that tighten the laws on charitable giving and closes this trophy hunting tax scam loophole.
There is nothing charitable about shooting rare animals and writing off the cost. Closing this loophole will help save rare wildlife around the world and save American taxpayers an estimated $43 million over the next decade. More...

The fact is, these bills passed because of the actions of you and hundreds of thousands of other caring citizens. From all of us here at The HSUS and the Humane Society Legislative Fund, and on behalf of the animals we work to protect, thank you so much.
    Sincerely,

    Wayne Pacelle

Alex, great update as usual. What is your opinion about the best spot to watch a horse race?

I was impressed with Invasor's victory yesterday, but today Bluegrass Cat seemed to be jumping for joy as he opened up a 7 length lead.

Bobby, wonderful report - looking good!

    Love ya,
    Edie

Alex, you just made me laugh with that one, cause I know what our Bobby would say........
    I beat YOU, BGC.
Nice win...I like the fractions and seemed rated great. So, it wasn't blazing..does it have to be?

MarilynCA....keep up reminding me to take deep breaths. you just stopped me from not being the Lady I am.

Found the room. No. 7 under Barbaro and my fingers will be quiet.

    Love,
    Susan

    #########
I will continue to come for Barbaro updates.

I will continue to take inspiration from the poems, and stories.

I will do my best to participate in THE BARBARO EFFECT and promote all things BARBARO, out of love for him, and for all of you, and for the voiceless ones, for the sake of his legacy.

I will continue to promote this wonderful site in every way I can.

It makes me sad that there are some people who do not understand how the bonding conversations here, are related to Barbaro.

It is my hope that, someday they will get it.

We are ONE NATION UNDER BARBARO...and here there IS >NO

I will join the Posse and the silliness at a different place. A chat room set aside for the healing balm of friendship and laughter.

But it does make me sad that we cannot all stay together, here at this place, that has been lovingly and generously set up by Tim and by Alex.

BARBARO, you are my champion. God Bless and keep you and yours.

    Alex,

Glad you had fun today at Delaware.

Wonderful news about Barbaro. I'm so glad he's still looking beautiful and shiny, if leaner. A "gleam in his eye?" That's our boy!

    Go, Bobby, go!

Sorry, but I think i need to close the comments. I may reopen them, but I have to go out to dinner, and I need to know that this board is not continuing this kind of dialog.

If anyone sees any good Bobby articles, please e-mail them to me. I may reopen comments at some point, but I am now simply very frustrated, and this is only 24 hours after I last posted about this. This has been a lot of work on my part, and all to lead to this.

I will continue to post updates and appreciate those who come to this site to learn about Bobby's condition.
