    Barbaro Updates: 41

    updates are now here.

Update 427: No update yet for Barbaro this morning, although I did see Peter who said that he remained comfortable last night. He also noted that they had reduced his pain medication recently. I will catch up with Peter a little later to see how Bobby is this morning.

I just spoke with Adrian Rolls, Graham Motion's assistant, who flew out to Chicago with Better Talk Now and Film Maker. They flew out yesterday (friday), it was a two hour flight from BWI. Adrian said it was amazing, as soon as they got on the plane they dropped their heads and totally relaxed (they have flown before). It was a very smooth two hour ride. Film Maker just shedrowed this morning (ridden in the shedrow in the barn). Better Talk Now was ponied to the track and jogged / galloped once around just to stretch his legs. Both look well and are in good order for their races. Adrian also caught up with Barclay (Tagg) who reported Showing Up was in good form. I think he flew in on thursday.

We had three visitors to Fair Hill today. Jazz, Lyn and Lois. It was fun being a host, I hope it was fun / interesting to visit!

Update 426: I was hoping to hear back from Jeannine Edwards (and may still do so yet) re: ABCs racing coverage today. The following is an excerpt of an e-mail she sent to me a couple of days ago:

we are not showing the secretariat, it's after we are off the air. we ARE showing the beverly d, arlington million, sword dancer (SAR) and vanderbilt (SAR). we may do a quick interview with the jacksons, not sure yet. there will be a barbaro update.

Its a shame we won't get to see the Secretariat (The Jackson's Showing Up's race) but it would be great if they were to interview the Jackson's! Lets see.

The following Bloodhorse article previews the Arlington Million: Many Obstacles in Million for English Channel which includes the following excerpt:

The leading quartet must face seven other worthy challengers in Saturday's Arlington Million XXIV. Among them: Bushwood Racing Partners' Better Talk Now, who won the 2004 John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf at Lone Star Park, last summer's United Nations, and was fourth in last summer's Arlington Million.

The Arlington Million I believe was the first million dollar race in the US. It was the first older horse US race that I really took notice of when growing up in the UK. European trainers have had a good degree of success in the race. I do remember when Teleprompter won the race!

Update 425: Thank you to those of you who contributed to my dinner tonight at the Whip. Very thoughtful, if unecessary. Tomorrow will be a busy day. We will have a few visitors coming to Fair Hill. I am looking forward to hopefully providing a couple of hours of "entertainment". For those coming, just plan to be at Parlo 1 at 8 am. If you arrive early, then park by the starting gate and hang around there until 8. The starting gate is the first thing you will see as you drive in from the 213 entrance. Parlo 1 is then the first barn after the starting gate. If you are late, still plan to come to Parlo 1 and ask for me. Someone will tell you what's going on, you may just have to wait around for a while. As far as I know i'll have 3 horses to ride after the break (8:45 am) and perhaps one at 8 (not sure yet). If not one at 8 we can use the time to look around a little. Feel free to come tomorrow, or another saturday, whether you have told me you are coming or not. If you have any trouble finding us call me.

Update 424: Peter Brette just called and Bobby seems to have had another good day. There is also a lovely thank you from New Bolton Center: Thank You and Kennett Florist left this note:

Just got back from NBC. We loaded them up with treats for Bobby for the weekend. Dr Sweeney reassured me and also wanted to let you know that they ARE getting to Bobby. She had someone bring a basket up to him as I was there. I admire this lady more and more each day.

I was talking to one of the staff and they were thinking about planting a "Barbaro Garden" of bulbs, so in the srping they could be reminded of him with beautiful colors and flowers. I think this is a wonderful ideas, and will try to get my hands on some bulbs.

We have stud muffins on the way! So we will include those in the baskets next week. I was told on Wednesday by one of the guys that works with Bobby, that he really likes them. Anything the boy wants... the boy gets!! Love to you all!

    WE BELIEVE!!

    Rachel at Kennett Florist

Update 423: Another comfortable night for Barbaro (thursday night), and a good morning. Peter has just visited and called to let me know (2:15 pm). Again he was upbeat. I asked him about the roses (traditionally worn after the Derby win). Apparently there were roses to wear after the Florida Derby win, he did not want anything to do with those, so for the KY Derby they did not want to push it. They did do something for a couple of quick pictures (I think Edgar jumped off for those), but that was it.
    update, friday, 2:25 pm

Update 422: Mike has written the next portion of "The Call":

"In an amazing turn of events here today , the horses are into the far turn and now BARBARO is making another move", shouts Durkin. You can sense the emotion in his baritone voice. It's a dual emotion of amazement and AWE. He knows that this is no ordinary race, and what he and all are witnessing is no ordinary horse. " For the first time Prado goes to his whip and BARBARO RESPONDS WITH A TREMENDOUS MOVE", hails Durkin," you can see the confidence now in this horse with every stride". Edgar tucks the whip away and begins to hand ride him as he passes horses on the outside, devouring the track and the opposition with a sublime display of raw power. He's now 8th, 7th, 6th, 5th, BARBARO HAS MOVED INTO 4TH with a big swooping move and looks like there's no stopping him now . It seems like seconds ago Edgar was in a life and death hold on this horse, but now BARBARO IS ON THE MOVE.....

(Mike perhaps post the entire call to the discussion boards ?)

There have been a few questions about the history of Fair Hill. This pre-Preakness article discusses Fair Hill and its history: Fair Hill provides Barbaro a peaceful home.

A nice article on Showing Up that also has a couple of Barbaro mentions: Not here just for show: Barbaro's stablemate Showing Up favored in Secretariat Stakes. The Barbaro mentions are:

"Barbaro is doing as well as can be expected," Roy Jackson said. "The main thing is to try to save him so he has a pain-free life. It's sort of going day by day. We have a special feeling for Barbaro because we bred him and raised him."

    and

"They're only a 3-year-old once," Tagg said. "I decided to make the switch [to the grass] because I thought Barbaro would win the Triple Crown. I can't imagine he'd have beaten Barbaro [who went into the Preakness undefeated in six races]. I thought Showing Up might have a chance to be the [national] champion turf horse."

A relatively belated start and the ability to run on both dirt and turf are the common denominators in the careers of Showing Up and Barbaro, who won his first three starts on the grass before moving to the main track.

Now, the torch that Barbaro carried has been passed to Showing Up.

Update 421: Peter is planning to visit Barbaro today, a little later, so I will get a quick report of his visit probably mid afternoon. He did speak to Michael this morning, but they did not discuss Bobby, so while I am unable to report that Bobby had a comfortable night (yet) I imagine if otherwise it would have been a topic of conversation. At least that is what Peter, Emily, Grae and I discussed when I asked Peter about Bobby. Peter did mention Bobby had a nice massage last night and the end of day report was very positive.

Update 420: A few have already commented on the note left on the site referenced in update 419 which indicated Bobby did not want anything to do with the roses after winning his Derby. This is confirmed here. I will also ask Peter about it when I get back to Fair Hill.

It was another beautiful morning this morning riding out. I have ridden five, and have two more to go. The first set, coming out about 5:25 am, you can see the track and clocker's stand silhouetted by the moon. As I was walking towards the track I could see about five horses jogging backwards (i.e. clockwise). This was Michael Matz's crew, again they were only lit by the moon. Its a very peaceful time of the morning.

On to the weekend racing. Graham (Motion) has Sweet Science in today in a stake at Saratoga. He is also shipping Better Talk Now (Arlington Million) and Film Maker (Beverly D) to Chicago today. They will van down to BWI and then fly to Chicago. Adrian Rolls (he led up Last Suspect to win the National a long time ago), assistant to Graham (and good friend) will be overseeing the shipping. I will call Adrian tomorrow to see how things are after both horses take a look at the race track.

Update 419: Michael Matz is still in Saratoga, I think he is returning on sunday, so again, the morning update will be closer to lunchtime. Here is another nice painting of Barbaro, which will be auctioned for charity: Thoroughbred Charities of America (December 1). I have added another update to the Fan Media page which includes the two latest Barbaro videos from Youtube.

Thankfully Mike Rea is continuing along his long road to recover: Hello Everyone.

    And finally, two poems:
The first, mysteriously dictated by Bobby to Melissa Harden:

    Song of the Thoroughbred
    By
    Bobby Jackson
    (Dictated to Melissa Harden)

Some run for the joy of it, some for the glory
Those who think otherwise, don't know the whole story
Some run to win races and that is their pleasure
Then some others that run just run at their leisure.

We love to run like the wind, that is our nature
And to run with the wind, what couldn't be greater.
From those who finish last to the noblest of steeds,
We are born and raised to run, for that is our breed.

If you watch us as youngsters, we're not standing still.
We are all running free, for that is our own will.
If all of you who doubt, would watch us in pastures,
While we're playing our games, to see who is faster,

Don't any of you doubt a thoroughbred's great heart.
All those of you who do, are so wrong from the start.
I still run in my dreams and will run when I'm healed.
It might not be as fast but; run someway I will.

We're magnificent creatures; - "Boy, don't we know it."
And if you should doubt that , then you should just stowe it.
So all of you "Neigh-sayers" should just go away
Let me get back to healing and eating my hay.

The second, posted on the discussion boards: http://forums.delphiforums.com/timwoolley/messages?msg=127.1:

    A Longed For Dream

    Hopes so high that day, it seemed;
fulfillment of a longed for dream.
    Raw burst of power, away you went;
    another victory evident.

Then fate stepped in that one cruel day,
and stole the longed for dream away.
    Confusion, fear, shown on your face;
am I not still to win this race?

An angel then lept quickly down,
concerned no longer with the crown.
And held you with such steely will,
in great attempts to keep you still.

    The masses stood with heads bowed low;
your future they did fear to know.
    But love stepped in and would not bend;
that day for you came not the end.

    Delivered to a healer good,
who did what others seldom would.
There now is hope, where once was none,
although much yet need still be done.

    Your courage, strength, unending grace,
will serve you well this final race.
    A champion's heart you do possess;
    Victorious! and nothing less.

The day will come to greet blue skies
and sunshine with your soulful eyes.
Let warm winds soothe and comfort you,
for all your pain and strife is through.

    God graces you, each day, you see;
He gives you now new destiny.
A longed for dream desired so...
the dream IS YOU, sweet Barbaro.

I am confused - on the new Barbaro painting page the information says that the Kentucky Derby roses never made it around his neck. I thought so - anyone else know anything about this? Actually I thought I remember some photos that show that.

Did see a picture of Matz trying to put the blanket of roses on Barbaro's back. Maybe Alex could ask Peter? Was he there? Maybe Barbaro said No flowers for me! If that's the case.
Maybe we can get him a blanket like the one he got from the Derby. But with everyones name on it, from this site.
Michael Matz is still in Saratoga, who's at Fair Hill working Man in Havana, and the other horses?
Alex thank you for everything. Stay on that 2year old today!

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at August 11, 2006 12:04 PM

Apparently Bobby didn't have the roses from the Derby around his neck. Check this site, and it says (and there's a picture as well about 3/4 of the way down the page) "They tried to put the roses on Barbaro, but he didn't want anything to do with them, so they finally gave up."

Just noticed that the banner at the top of the discussion board is a picture of you and Peter. I beleive it is one from the picture gallery. Very nice.

Posted by: Jill at August 11, 2006 12:05 PM

Bobby does have a very independent nature. Just look at the picture before being saddled at the Derby when he was dragging everyone off of his feet. I put the caption "Independent Spirit" under that picture on my site.

Posted by: Melissa Harden, Columbus, GA at August 11, 2006 12:06 PM

Thanks, Lor, for that article! I watched the Derby but didn't realize Bobby didn't want anything to do with the roses. They would not have had a problem putting a blanket of baby carrots around him! LOL!!!!

Well life is good. Bobby is still stable and now in healing mode, and the Philly Eagles won last night!! I am moderator on phillyeagles.net, so I will be posting over there as well as here today ;-)

The weather here in Cecil County (Fair Hill and Elkton where I live) is absolutely stunning. Sunny, low humidity and temps in the 70's. I hope it holds out for my trip to see the gang tomorrow.

Here's hoping for those three words - Another Comfortable day. Eat, Rest and Grow your hoof!!

Here is another article (from the Mercury News) on Showing Up if anyone is interested called

"Showing Up seeks Barbaro-like effort on turf"

    http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/15245624.htm

Roy and Gretchen Jackson won't go to the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary hospital Saturday to visit Barbaro and give him a snack of lush handpicked grass as the couple has done almost every day since late May.

Instead, while Barbaro continues his struggle to survive the career-ending injuries he sustained in the Preakness, the Jacksons will be watching their superstar heir apparent, Showing Up, line up as the 7-5 morning line favorite Saturday in Arlington Park's Grade I $400,000 Secretariat Stakes.

the last paragraphs as this is a long article

Now, the torch that Barbaro carried has been passed to Showing Up.

"He seems to be a natural athlete," Jackson said. "He's a very, very calm horse. He just takes everything in stride. He's a smaller horse than Barbaro, not as physically impressive. But one of the most important things is heart - the desire to win - and both of them have that."

Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien has named his Arlington Million and Secretariat Stakes riding replacements for Kieren Fallon. Stewards denied Fallon a license Wednesday because he is suspended in England for alleged race-fixing. Garrett Gomez will ride Ace in the Million. John Velasquez, America's champion rider who is coming from New York to ride English Channel in the Million, has picked up the mount on Ivan Denisovich in the Secretariat.

    BELIEVE IN BARBARO!!

    Keep on Fighting!!

HEY ALL....does anyone know the status of our goody basket schedule from Kennett Florist? Are we running "slow" now?

Posted by: Sarah at August 11, 2006 2:00 PM

Thanks for the stories about Barbaro not wanting the roses around his neck. I too saw the Derby but didn't remember his unwillingness to wear the roses.

Yes, baby carrots with the greens on would have been more fitting from what we hear of his liking for carrots.

Hoping, as always for another good update.

Thanks to all who work so hard to keep us informed and all who are willing to share their inside knowledge.

Posted by: Jayne at August 11, 2006 2:02 PM

Jayne - I didn't realize he wouldn't wear the roses - although I never did see any pictures of him wearing the roses - so it makes sense. Is there a video of him not wanting the roses??? if so please post the link.

    Good Morning Bobby,

Since you are now dictating your thoughts (a horse of many talents!), I was wondering whether you read the morning papers yet?

I'm sure that you wish your friend? and stable mate good luck tomorrow. And that you'll probably be watching the races on the television if it's possible.

The weather here is beautiful, so I'm sure it is there. Of course, I hope that makes for a more comfortable day for you. That and the fact the wonderful doctors and nurses stopping by in a neigh-borly gesture to make sure that you have everything that you need, and feel ok.

I have to do shopping and get food for my guys (meows). Hope to check in with you later.

    Love ya Big Guy,

we breeze early in the morning typically to avoid the heat of the day. all horses are trained by about 10 am, so to get that done you have to start pretty early.

I think that is kinda odd - you breeze early because its cool but the horses race in the heat of the day - doesn't make sense to me. If they breeze early they should race early.

    Looking forward to ACN.

    ALEX:

    two questions, if you would.
    1. When horses are flown to racetracks, is that commercial, cargo, charter...how do they go about it?

    2. On a more serious note, for the past two days I've had great difficulty accessing this site. Frequent, long delays; a lot of error/can't find server submissions; and excruciating delays when I click on comments. I was completely unable to access through Google earlier. This is happening on two different computers with completely different servers and ISP's. I suspect the popularity of this site may be the cause, but was wondering....and concerned.

Shipping 2 horses to Chicago, how complicated is that and how does it effect the horses? I just know road trips with pets can get a little stressful for all involved, both 2 legged and 4 legged.

    Hay,

I posted before; but, for some reason it didn't show up. Would any of you with connections to NBC tell them that they can bring back the television they had outside my stall during the Belmont tomorrow so I can watch Showing Up in the Arlington. I wasn't really interested in the Belmont since I wasn't running; but, I would sure like to cheer "Neigh" for Showing Up.

Alex - I didn't mean anything towards you - I just think they should race horses earlier in the day - most races start at noonish and go all afternoon - it is the hottest part of the day. Maybe thats part of the reason for the breakdowns.

    THE CALL PT.4

“ In an amazing turn of events here today , the horses are into the far turn and now BARBARO is making another move”, shouts Durkin. You can sense the emotion in his baritone voice. It’s a dual emotion of amazement and AWE. He knows that this is no ordinary race, and what he and all are witnessing is no ordinary horse. “ For the first time Prado goes to his whip and BARBARO RESPONDS WITH A TREMENDOUS MOVE”, hails Durkin,” you can see the confidence now in this horse with every stride”. Edgar tucks the whip away and begins to hand ride him as he passes horses on the outside, devouring the track and the opposition with a sublime display of raw power. He’s now 8th, 7th, 6th, 5th, BARBARO HAS MOVED INTO 4TH with a big swooping move and looks like there’s no stopping him now . It seems like seconds ago Edgar was in a life and death hold on this horse, but now BARBARO IS ON THE MOVE.....

Since I rarely have time to look over other comments made, I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, or not. However, if someone else has mentioned this, it's worth repeating, I think.
(-and I might add, it is such a pleasant vacation from Things to take a moment to *think* like this.)
I've seen a very sweet picture of *our Horse* smelling his Kentucky Derby roses, so of course it's clear that he was very appreciative of them.. possibly he was just trying to send everyone a message about not wanting to be *under* his roses, just yet. Anyway, it seems that's the way it worked out, and, since we all know our Horse is Perfect, - why couldn't he have found his own particular way to say this, so early on in his Roses Discussion?
-and it's right you are, Dear Barbaro, and may you long continue to feel this way; i.e., Roses are for smelling; not for 'pushing up'. Best wishes, KAWilson
p.s. they're also excellent for making Rosary beads -which reminds me, I hope you're saying your prayers.

Alex, that sounds so lovely and peaceful, exercising at that time of the morning..I'm not a morning person, but I'd get up to see that!

Hope you had ACN babycakes....and if you don't like blankets of roses, howsabout a blanket of stud muffins...would that be more to your taste?

Okay here goes, now twitch the ears (you weren't in time yesterday) and swish the tail

    Eat your carrots every day
Stay in the sling and play, play, play

A little nip here, a little nip there
shows everyone how much you care

Grow hoof grow! Heal leg heal!
    That's become our daily appeal

Keep on doing like you are

    Hello, All :

    Good Morning, Barbaro.

OK, maybe WALKING on the roses, as he leaves the hospital for home, is more poetic anyway.

Yes, Dear Boy, strewn beneath your beautiful, healthy, miracle feet.

Posted by: Otherlyn at August 11, 2006 3:39 PM

    Roses

We have had horses that did NOT like the blanket,
as it is called, of whatever flowers around their
necks. You try to teach them to accept as many
different situations as you can, but some just
won't have it...Barbaro is obviously one of them.

Think of it this way...you wouldn't want your
roses to get him to act up in any way... after all
he doesn't need ANY embellishment, as least as
    far as I am concerned.

Keep on doing what you are doing Barbaro.

he has been through...besides, Barbaro needs NO

Posted by: Thoroughbred Purist at August 11, 2006 3:40 PM

    Sally,

Most facilities are not like Fair Hill. The tracks use the mornings for practice so they can't race then. After the morning works, they get the track in condition for the races.
It would be nice if they could run earlier in the day but it wouldn't be possible.
    Hope that answers your question.

FOR ALL YOU PEOPLE JUST LOOKING FOR UPDATES...

I suggest downloading IE 7. You can choose something called "view feeds". You subscribed and it doesn't cost a thing. It will automatically update your computer.

You will be taken to a different looking page--NO COMMENTS! and only updates.

THIS MIGHT BE OF INTEREST TO THOSE OF YOU WHO WERE YELLING SO LOUDLY AT US LAST WEEKEND.

I'm apologize for yelling but I wanted to bring attention to something that I just found. I just downloaded IE7 last night. It's worth looking into if your computer meets the minimum requirements.

You have a different looking task bar and a little orange box that lights up when feeds are available to a particular site. This option is available here. So maybe this'll stop the complaining.

Also be aware that "Find" no longer works here. It kept locking up my computer yesterday.

Be back later with some Bobby thoughts.

The "Discussion Board" doesn't seem to be open, at least the highlighted words "discussion board" don't work. Any ideas?

    an interesting aside, and FYI:

With the brief, but interesting comments, yesterday, about Mustangs, hoof health, and infusion of Mustang to TBs, I googled "Hidalgo Mustang" and found FrankHopkins.com

This is the site where anyone interested can go to read about the true story of Hidalgo, and Frank...(the movie starred Viggo). It is also a great start for info on the pure Spanish Barb. (Same distant and basic ancestry as TBs)Very interesting to "horse people"

Thanks, Otherly...I loved the movie and am interested to read about the true story!

It is from all of us on the website and just feel good doing it every few weeks. You all have a great weekend, esp Barbaro!!!

To Tracie...oh, I didn't know about Bobby liking Ginger Snaps...I do too. LOL Never gave them to our horse, but I bet she would have liked them too. Our Ms. Duchy was about 35 yrs. old, and she was just put down. Very sad about it! She lived her final years down in Tx. with my daughter. I sure hope and pray that Bobby can live to that ripe old age too. He is a strong willed fellow, so hopefully that will happen for him.

BARBARO, I haven't posted a message in many days. Just want you (and your "family") to know I still love you. The prayers continue. I've been checking in daily, just not sure what to say....

ALEX, I had trouble getting the latest update this morning. Computer wouldn't display it...Checked out the Prospero discussion board site...still not sure how to use it very well, but I am glad to find a centralized place for collective info...Enjoyed the Derby articles/info/pics...Finally put to rest a long-standing question in my mind. ...WHERE is there a picture of Barbaro WEARING the blanket of roses?...Nowhere. He didn't! ...That Boy makes me smile! Just like a kid, isn't he? (just like "my" own kid at 2 and 3 years old, not wanting to sit on Santa's lap)...LOL...Seems like every new thing I learn about Barbaro just makes him even dearer! Alex, Thank you for sharing so much with us. Your knowledge, your perscective, your wisdom, your connections. It takes a special person to take the time and to go through the trouble to give us all the tidbits of information. You have done it well! WE, "the fans" just eat it up! Through my visits to your site, I have learned a lot about horses, and horseracing. I hunger to learn more. My head is full of past memories. Secretariat, Saratoga, my Dad. I find myself wishing my dad was still here. In his youth (probably the 1930's and early 40's)he worked at Aqueduct and Saratoga. I think he could have shared some great stories. I'll never know....I applaud your decision to close out the comments for a day or two. You seem like a real gentleman. I know you took a risk to re-open it. So much is beyond your control. I hope WE can ALL live up to your expectations. I am sorry if I contributed to making your site a "chat room," in the past. Since I have never been to a chat room and have only negative opinions of them (isn't that where people meet and have affairs and get kidnapped from, and lure young gilrs and boys, etc.???). I have repeatedly warned my kids, NO CHAT ROOMS, or you won't be using the computer!
Alex, the last thing I have, for now is a question. WHAT KIND OF COSMETIC SURGERIES ARE TWO YEAR OLD HORSES HAVING SO THEY WILL SELL??? It was mentioned in one of the news article/interviews linked to your other discussion board site. It was the arlicle about Arlington, I think.

BARB KERR: Thank you for the invite(to email you) You gave me your address back around 7/27 or so. Just haven't had time to write, yet. You sound like a lovely person, too.

ALL: Keep up the good work, or should I say "God" work. Miracles are happening every day. Love you all. Have missed talking to you.

    C'mon BARBARO. GO, Boy, GO!
    Keep up the healing.

Posted by: Jo Edwards at August 11, 2006 5:49 PM

    Jo,

Alex is the authority on this but they are probably talking about a breeze workout or a handy workout that fully extends a horse's legs, muscles, shoulders, and lung capacity by exercising him at rapid rate of grab and go striding over a distance of ground. That distance is far enough to reach one of three standard objectives of working handily:
    1. To at least maintain a thoroughbred's current level of racing fitness
    2. Snap him up to a new plateau or
    3. Getting a betting tool racing ready if a horse is coming off a holiday or is a maiden firster by exerting him HARD, e.g. the rider leaning forward in the irons with his knuckles pumping along the thoroughbred's neck reaching and pushing for full extension. The exercise rider smells the mix of sweat and shampoo on a horse's mane. In a handy workout you won't see the bottom of the exercise rider’s boots as one would in a breezing movement. But the rider will draw his whip

    Again, Alex is the authority.

To LSF with the silver horse charm on your stethescope - I now also wear a silver horse charm on a necklace I made. I make lots of jewelry & I often wear my inventory (good advertising) . . . but every morning even if I lay out something else, I go back for my "Bobby" necklace. Gives me a "touchstone" when I think about him (which is often! & it is more acceptable than carrying my "plush" Barbaro horse around the office with me (a bay with a white star! Both Aurora and Douglas carry plush bays in case you are looking).

I send healing thoughts and prayers to you every day, Bobby. You are an inspiration to those of us who could use more of your qualities - courage, adaptability, inteligence, stamina, and grace under pressure.

I posted earlier commenting on Alex saying workouts are done early in the day to avoid the heat....BUT, seems like it got lost somewhere when the board was a little off.
We always worked early every month of the year. As I said in my lost post, when you got to the track at 5:30 am you kind of wondered why you were there, til you got to the rail and watched the works as you were freezing your tail off. You do have to get off the track by a certain time so they can get ready for the days races.
Kathleen, I don't think he was appreciating the roses, I think Bobby was looking to see if they were edible.
    Hope for an update soon.

Jazz -- great explanation to go along with Alex's comments on breezing -- we always looked to the breezing as a final tuning up before race day... a final chance to make sure that the horse would be ready to fairly compete at the level at which they were being placed in -- do you want to tackle the explanation of how to place a horse in the right type of race that they have the best chance of winning at?

Thank you Cathy for the Bobby basket. Pay day is coming and I want to send something again, too. I know it is so great for the moral up there and Bobby picks up on that.
Since we are in this for the long haul, it would be nice for all us Barbaromaniacs to send what we can when we can so that it keeps up. I know homemade cards and little notes of encouragement are appreciated so much as well.
They are working so hard to heal our boy.

"Jazz -- great explanation to go along with Alex's comments on breezing -- we always looked to the breezing as a final tuning up before race day... a final chance to make sure that the horse would be ready to fairly compete at the level at which they were being placed in -- do you want to tackle the explanation of how to place a horse in the right type of race that they have the best chance of winning at?

Posted by: Barbara Kerr at August 11, 2006 06:39 PM"

Sure thing Barb, but I would think you have the answer to this. Don't you? Did someone inquire about this earlier?

You must take into consideration both the pace and distance of the race. The horses speed, meaning how fast the horse typically runs. The conditons surrouding the race. Obviously the age, a 5 year old can't be placed in a derby LOL! Where the horse starts will be a factor but that is up to the placing judges. The time of the race is a factor, so is the time of year. I also look at the last 1/4 mile performance of the horse. etc....

    Cheers

yes, good answer jazz. I'm at work and would love to be able to explain the difference between claiming, allowance and graded stakes, and some of the conditions and things to look for, such as if the horse is moving up or down in class....will post more on the discussion board, does anyone know how many lengths bobby won his first race and broke his maiden by? I'm curious about that.

that's one of the greatest feelings in the world, when you are part of a racehorse horse (owner/breeder/trainer/groom/exercise rider/jockey, whatever) that wins in its first start.......

Love to you and yours. Hearts heal. Memories keep them near.

    ...waiting for news on Ginforthewin.

A few days ago, someone mentioned keeping an "in memorium" log of names, and photos of the recently lost "treasures"... horses "down" on the tracks. Was anyone ever able to coordinate that effort?

Oh Lord, I know you are so busy these days, but please Lord, ...please help them stay safe. We ask for skill, healing, and a good outcome for Ginforthewin...

    ...and, thankyou for Barbaro.

Leslie in MN, thank you for your kind words regarding my poem. They mean a lot to me. I've never been very good at putting my thoughts and feelings on paper, I truly haven't. I have been so inspired by Barbaro, just like so many others, and the words just seemed to flow. I was really quite surprised by it! I know that if Barbaro inspires me to do what I never really could do before, then he inspires others, as well, to do far, far greater things! I believe this is Barbaro's new destiny...to inspire and unite a broken world. Thank you again. I'm so grateful you liked it.

Bobby, hope you're having a great day honey! You are such a joy, and I continue to be awed and inspired by your courage and strength. No one can doubt your determination, that's for sure! Atta boy Bobby, atta boy! I love you sweetie pie!

    The miracle continues.

same here, and also had one horse break his maiden on his first start by about 20 lengths. it was awesome! for a while we did derby nominations and all that, but he was always just a very good allowance horse, although he did get black type winning a G3 stakes. Laffit Pincay was his jockey, but I guess I'm dating myself now, lol.

Did Edgar ever reveal what words he said to Barbaro right after the KD win? There is a photo of the two of them, in that site with the article from last May, about horse soundness, and in the photo it looks like Edgar might be speaking to Our Boy.

    Afternoon Friends!

Finally - a double dose progress report with Michael Matz being upbeat - another comfortable night AND a good morning as well. Who could ask for anything more? Every day, I'm KVELLING MIT NACHAS!

This horse, and all his connections, collectively (gestalt) = LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH.

Ever since we heard that The Barb woke up and was back in his stall after the surgery the day after P day, even on the bleakest day when we had to face the reality of the L word, I never, ever doubted that he will walk out of there some day. I am as convinced of that, as I am of the fact that I am sitting here typing with tears in my eyes - again.

I am so grateful that the Jacksons and Michael Matz jointly made the difficult decision at the outset, to opt for the long, hard road to go for the "save" instead of taking the "easy" out. And to Edgar Prado whose quick action made the decision to go for the save, a viable one. Without him, we wouldn't be here talking about Bobby's progress.

Now it's time for a great big thank you (always insufficient, but better than nothin') to the Jacksons, Edgar Prado, Michael Matz, Eduardo, and the vets who attended to Barbaro at the track that day, for getting us to the point we are now; and next to Dr. R and all at NBC, as well to Dr. Kathy A; to Alex, Tim, everyone at Fair Hill; the Kennett Florist team; anyone I forgot, please excuse me.

The Barbaro Effect will be felt for many years to come, in the world of racing and far beyond.

Just tried to post this with URL's and it was held up, so am reposting without them; please excuse me for the duplication if both pop up eventually. I really want to get this info out.

I'm still waiting for my Barbaro T-shirt from Ernie; she was awaiting a delivery of some in my size. Can hardly wait - will wear it on stage (when performing FETLOCK FUSION - Horsesongs for Barbaro). If you are gonna order a T-shirt from Ernie from the Corvino Ballet site, please consider making your requested donation to a horse welfare facility, to Miracle Horse Rescue, Inc., a 501(c)(3) (tax deductible) NFP, a link to which appears on Ernie's site. (That's where my special-needs horse, Blackie [The Best Horse I Never Rode] will live out her years if/when I can no longer maintain her.) If you click on the MHR link on Ernie's site, you can see what kind of special needs horses they keep. An OTTB named General lives there, who was blinded by blows from a 2x4. If you make your donation mentioning General or Barbaro, or if you say "CJ sent me," Stephanie, who founded and runs the place, has assured me it will be used for care/maintenance of TB's at MHR. There are 29 horses there now, one more due shortly, and General is not the only TB there, several others as well. (I add this for the benefit of people who are breed-specific-sensitive ... )

Stephanie has been nominated as Hero of the Year in a national competition; she is one of 5 finalists from her state (Nevada). The voting starts next week, and if she wins, all proceeds-benefits are going to support those horses. I will post the details on Monday unless somebody like Alex tells me this is a not a proper use of this Board.

    Good Evening!

Am getting caught up...downloaded all the pics I've taken. Some of you have just gotten an e-mail from me with 3 pics of me on Windy. These were taken about 5 hours ago. I'm the second person Windy has allowed to ride him since my friend Willow rescued him and Stormy over a year ago. Windy was horribly abused by his previous owner (as was Stormy)and only let Willow ride him last month. To say I'm awed is an understatement. I've been doing energy healing on both horses for over 2 months and the change in them has me floored.

Now I really wish I could work on Bobby directly. His presence is just opening doors of healing and joy that we need to have in our lives right now. The people on this site continue to amaze me and restore my faith in people. Thank you all just for being here and opening the love you have for Bobby J and all the people working for his recovery.

    Miracles can happen.

Now I'll leave and cry for a little bit.

Alex, see you and Jazz tomorrow.

Bobby, another good day. I am so thankful that you continue to recover. One day at a time sweet one.

Loved today's update...KF, you continue to amaze me. Your dedication and thoughtfulness bring tears to my eyes.

I love the idea of the garden...

Since Bobby didn't like the roses, should this year's Derby be (affectionately and temporarily) named "Chase for the Carrots" instead of "Run for the Roses"????

I'm still trying to take today in...gotta go have some dinner and get ready for Fair Hill tomorrow (this is gonna be sooooo much fun...). I'll be back to help tuck Bobby in...

The same for anyone who'd like the email from MHR with into about General (the OTTB who was blinded by a blow from a 2x4), email me and I will forward it to you. It is a little too long to post here, I think. potlucky@sbcglobal.net mention Barbaro in the header because I get so much spam these days. (Small price to pay for ability to communicate like this.)

Thanks to all who are interested in this specific thing we can do for the horses in honor of Barbaro - AFTER we contact our Rep, of course, re HR 503 to ban horse slaughter, and AFTER we sign the petition for safer track surfaces. (Links elsewhere on this site, I believe.)

I do consider myself ONE OF THEM, even though I wasn't a part of making or sending the signfor NBC !!!

Thank you, NBC for remembering all those who think and pray for you and the ones who send goodies through Kennett Florist. Your posting was really nice to see and I REALLY LOVED SEEING THE NEW PHOTOS OF BARBARO.

Most of all, thank you Barbaro for continuing to be the Champion you are; to your owners the Jacksons, and to your trainers, riders and handlers -- Michael Matz & family, and Peter Brette, and Prado, etc.

Today I drove through a horse property neighborhood and in a huge, fenced-in field saw several horses. One, however, stood out because he had long legs, chestnut brown with black main & tail. Guess who he reminded me of???

But, he is not you, BARBARO!!! I see you in better fields, eating up newly sprouted grass and baby flowers amongst the gently rolling hills.

PRAY FOR BARBARO AND ALL THOSE WHO LOVE AND CARE FOR HIM.

    Jo,
I think it takes an extraordinary spirit in a horse to trust other humans after being so badly abused. Some horses will never trust again, some will take a long time of love and work before they will ever start to trust again. That's why I said I thought he had the same kind of spirit as Barbaro, because Barbaro is such a champ in all he's going through. General has that same quality. It's very special. It's very intelligent.
Yes, I will have my arms full of all your hugs and scratches - I will tell him, here's from Sally, here's from Jo, etc. - and I know he will understand.

Just signed on after getting home from work. What a positive, upbeat feeling reading all the updates and posts. Haven't even gone to the discussion board yet.

Special One, ACN, a visit from Peter who is upbeat and a weekend with bath and probably another massage or two. We know you are well stocked with treats. Whatever you want you get.

Jazz, thanks for the glossary. I'll say it again. I'm really learning from this site.

Alex, thanks for the great article on the history of Fair Hill. Don't know how you remember all our questions. Have also learned lots from you.

Faye, General already has his ears up in the photo and I'd take that to be a good sign. He looks like a very lovable boy. Please keep sharing him with us.

A very lovely thank you from NBC. The pictures and the thoughts were perfect. More evidence of classy, special people surrounding our classy special horse.

Sleep well, Bobby J. Will be with you tomorrow. I'm off to the discussion board to learn more new things.

    Toby,
General is a 20 year old Thoroughbred gelding, who was blinded because his owner hit him over the head with a 2X4.
He was probably raced in his early years as he does have a tattoo on his lip - which usually means he was raced. Stephanie says it's blurred (which often happens after many years), but I'm going to try to have a look at it on Tuesday and see if I can make out anything. Would love to find out who he is, lineage and all.

Printable version of Run For The Roses Lyrics By Fogelberg Dan*********
    Born in the valley
    And raised in the trees
    Of Western Kentucky
    On wobbly knees
    With mama beside you
    To help you along
You'll soon be a growing up strong.
    All the long, lazy mornings
    In pastures of green
    The sun on your withers
    The wind in your mane
    Could never prepare you
    For what lies ahead
The run for the roses so red --
And it's run for the roses
    As fast as you can
    Your fate is delivered
    Your moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime
    In a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined
    In the dance
    It's high time you joined
    In the dance --
    From sire to sire
    It's born in the blood
    The fire of a mare
And the strength of a stud
    It's breeding and it's training
    And it's something unknown
    That drives you and carries
    You home.
And it's run for the roses
    As fast as you can
    Your fate is delivered
    Your moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime
    In a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined
    In the dance
    It's high time you joined
    In the dance --
****This song is for you Sweet Barbaro, (even tho you don't like real roses) You ran for the roses because God created you to run! He IS healing you so beautifully! I love you so much & my prayers are neverending!. Kisses on your pink snip.XXX Love, Nancy

We are the ones who are thankful and grateful - for all their work and loving care for Barbaro...

Hay, our favorite doc will be on vacation when his b'day rolls around... the understanding is, not out of town... it seems he can't be totally away from B for any length of time!

So, Rachel is getting the scoop on restaurants he really enjoys and he'll be getting our gift the Friday before his special day...

A warm thank you to Dr. Sweeney, in the form of a lovely basket from KSF has been sent to her today from all of us..

Bobby, I wish you a restful, healing night. Love you so much!

Faye - Saw a picture of General, he is a real beauty. You are right about two things. His owner is the animal, how could someone do that to their own? And he shoud be hit over the head with a 2x4 then put in jail for the rest of his life. More hugs from me to him - he might just overdose on all the love, if possible.

Bobby - Goodnight to you sweet prince. Have wonderful and fun horsey dreams of what you will be doing when you get out. Munching grass on your own, breathing fresh air and visiting the ladies maybe. Love and kisses to you.

Got too tired trying to keep up with all the other boards, so I'm "home" again - glad to see some new names, as well as some familiar members of the Barbaromaniacs, Barbaro Nation, Barbaro Brigade.

I think Barbaro would prefer carnations; after all, he is kind of a spicy guy!

Alex - continuing gratitude for your updates to get us through until the next NBC posting, and also for all the fascinating articles...I'm going through printer cartridges like crazy, scrapbook overflowing!

    C. Jaffe - thanks for sharing your site - LOVED your story & Lyn Gilbert's too!

Lyn - thanks for the pictures of Windy (and you, of course) - what a beauty, and what an honor for you! I don't know much at all about Reiki, but now I'm curious to research.

Renee - great weather here in CT! Hope Barbaro's stall has a little window so he can smell the cool night air.

ANYBODY - do you know Barbaro's "vital statistics"...how many hands, weight (before accident)? Just curious...

Why does Barbaro want stud muffins? Obviously, because he IS a stud muffin! Looked them up and they sound yummy - boy, is he getting spoiled! The Jacksons may have their hands full in a few months, although I think they will be thrilled to have their hands full in this case!

If you shop online a lot, check out iGive.com
I signed up with them last year, there are 650+ stores and 30,000+ charities that get a percentage of purchase price. I haven't checked yet to see if The Barbaro Fund is there, but I'm sure there are many horse/animal charities...or you can add one when you register as long as it's a legit 501(c)3. (Mine is Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah.) It costs nothing to join - it's FREE MONEY for our favorite animal charities. Please take a minute and check it out...and if you do register, be sure to shop within 45 days so your charity gets an extra $5. donation. Thanks!

BARBARO, CHAMPION OF MY HEART...I hope you have a blessed, peaceful, healing sleep tonight and a relaxing weekend! Are you still going boing, boing, boing and "doggy-sitting" in your sling? You are just so smart to be so cooperative. I feel that your have an enormous heart (like Secretariat) and also an enormous brain - your adjustment to your present circumstances is very inspiring, and humans have a lot to learn from a guy like you! Even Dr. R. said that you're intelligent - you should be flattered! Seamus and Maizie (not barn cats, spoiled house cats) wish you well, too...they must really like you because they don't complain(too much) that their dinner is always late now because I have to check on you as soon as I come in from work. I send you my love and prayer as always...still want to kiss your nose!
    Love you, big guy!

Your idea is fabulous, for New Bolton to have a huge flower bed with beautiful bulbs and flowers springing up in honor of Barbaro from the Barbaromaniacs all over the world. Wonder if we could send all our bulbs to Kennett. I can also send a couple of bulb planters and garden gloves to be included in our Bulb Bed for Barbaro!

KF, could we send everything to you? I know that would be a lot of extra work for you guys.

Maybe we could chip for some kind of Dedication Sign to be posted in the bed.

Bobby, I am not forgetting about you tonight. Love, positive energy and prayers are coming your way. Sweet dreams, baby. I hope NBC plays the Splish Splash video while you are getting your bath tomorrow.

So much of the best of humanity shown on this site..
the kindness of people sending flower baskets, gifts to Barbaro..the thoughtfulness given to the news crews..the dedicated efforts of Michael Matz to give us updated information..the perserverance of Alex giving us the most interesting tidbits...the energies expended by all the medical staff , not just to give medical attention but showering him with love...the insightful remarks made by various media people..so many of us laypeople contributing such great poems, touching videos...All for a horse , one might say..but compassion, kindness, caring and love should be without boundaries. In this broken world, more people need to come together and commit themselves to work for noble causes that require decency, kindness, honesty, ..all those godlike traits that make us proud of our humanity. Thank you to all who understand the need to dedicate so much of themselves to Barbaro, since he is not only special as a magnificent horse, but as a symbol to so many people who want to be better human beings.

I wonder if this is what they mean by "heaven on earth" -- when human beings who don't know each other and never will gather together and give, and give again, to bring health and wellbeing to not just one member of another species, but a whole hospital full of them. this is one of those days I'm so glad to be alive.

We are so happy to have you back. You are special to us. We have developed a family here. We may not be related but we are family all the same and we all love Barbaro. I know what you mean about animals bringing magic. My dogs, Rose, Kirby and Beegan bring magic to all who meet them.

Please check out all of the other board options, but ALWAYS feel free to come back here to the "Home Comment/ Post" page. I enjoy the Chat room that Alex set up for us, but it really is fast paced. Lorraine --beautifully, beautifully said. You should post that every day!

    Chad--Hey! Welcome back!

Rachel and the KF gang --thanks as always. You are about to be inundated with Stud Muffins--two posters here tonight have sent them and I sent a bucket, too. Wish I could find that many human stud muffins, LOL.

The flower garden is a beautiful idea--love the idea of any kind of living monument. Once a Derby champ, always a Derby champ, and so will his garden reflect.

As for the scum that hurt The General, karma can be a mutha. And it will be.

Alex, as always, you're a mensch!! Have a fun, fall-free weekend.

Bobby, my love!! I'm sorry I wasn't home to "talk" to you and our Family tonight. You are never out of mind, though! I saw two horses tonight and as I passed, they called out "Tell Barbaro he da man!!"

I also saw seven deer--yes, full size deer. They were pretty, and graceful, and made me think of you. They will be grazing tonight under this lovely full moon, and they will be thinking of you and your first night home when you'll get to graze under a full moon (we'll ask the Jacksons to suspend curfew).

So good night, sweet Bobby, and sleep well and heal. Be careful getting up and down. Have ACN and see you tomorrow for ACD!!

Goodnight, you wonderful Maniacs. As long as there are people like you, the best of the human and animal races will survive.

Barbaro was a mighty athlete, and his beauty is mighty too. I feel that he is just as beautiful now, even more beautiful, being the mighty Barbaro of today in his hospital stall, day and night. Just like you are beautiful, Chad, in being true to who you are and being the person you are meant to be. Good evening Barbaro

I was some how very touched by Sandra Gehri-Bergman.s poem. There are some very talented writers on this mission to hold up Barbaro.

All I have to offer is continued prayers for your healing, Great One!

Sweet dreams dear Bobby. Rest and heal!

Posted by: Emily Cooper at August 12, 2006 4:53 AM

Just got back from a week in Saratoga where I saw Michael Matz, the Jacksons and Dr Richardson in the paddock on Sunday. Dr Richardson presented the trophy for a race sponsored by New Bolton. He looked relaxed and happy and the Saratoga Special reported that during Dr Richardson's afternoon there, he was asked well over one hundred times about Barbaro and he was able to report that all was well.

Yesterday, Edgar Prado was autographing pictures of his winning ride in the Derby on Barbaro. The proceeds went to the Race Track Chaplaincy. I thanked him for being so good to Barbaro and he replied that Barbaro had been very good to him, too. Edgar did say to the man in front of me that he had heard that they had taken Barbaro out to graze on Thursday morning. Whether that can be verified or not, I don't know. But he did say that he was up there to see him about 2 weeks ago and was very pleased with how well he was doing. Edgar is certainly a very nice person and a class act. You can tell how much he truly cares about Barbaro. His face, which is normally quite solemn, lights up when he talks about him.

Posted by: Jane at August 12, 2006 4:54 AM

Good night sweet Barbaro. I pray that you are safe and comfy tonight. You've no idea how much you've touched my heart and because of you, I feel inspired and enlightened. I only hope that one day I can become as courageous and strong as you are, sweet boy. You've set the bar pretty high, but as I see it, that's a good thing. I love you so very much Bobby. Rest well and heal.

    The miracle continues.

Posted by: Sandie at August 12, 2006 4:55 AM

    Emily,

You're prayers are the MOST important thing that you can offer Barbaro. Thank you for loving him. It's the love, prayers, and support of so many people, just like you, that will see Bobby through his ordeal. I have to believe our compassion, faith, and support of Barbaro will not go unrewarded, and Bobby will recover and go on to live a wonderful, happy life!

I'm glad my poem touched you. You'll never know how touched I AM to here it affected you like that...I'm honored.

Posted by: Sarah at August 12, 2006 7:43 AM

Good night to the Barbaro family ... May tomorrow bring even more wonderful news (can it really be true? If not, it is still a terrific rumor!). Bobby will have to go out to cut his own fresh green grass tomorrow, because the Jacksons will be at Arlington (fingers crossed).

How can any of us have time to go to the discussion/forum site if we want to just keep up with these update comments?? This is breeding obsessive/compulsive behavior - I don't want to miss anything, am learning much, not sleeping enough, wanting to be out on the track at 5:00 am... Actually, the dogs would be glad to go, but since I stay up so late reading these posts I can't drag myself out.

Thank you all for the poetry, for the Splish Splash video (a smile - Chad would like this!), and the vision of Dave in a dress. Maybe this site is so compelling because it has everything - high drama, life and death, rich humor, generous emotions, fits of pique, lots of animal love, stimulating learning opportunities, plans for the future grand exit, and buckets of tears. Tears of joy are beginning to outnumber the tears of fear.

Lyn G. - I hope you take pictures of your visit tomorrow, so you can make them available, too. We would all like to be there with you, so you'll have to be our eyes and ears (and nose, too).

Caroline Jaffe - I was captivated by your story of "The Best Horse I Never Rode" (great title, too); I hope your body has been healed by this time... you are very passionate and how very fortunate you can translate your love for animals into your performances for others. Wish I were closer!

I'm off now, finally, to light candles for our Bobby, for Ginforthewin (please, God), for Gallant Secret and New Joysey Jeff and Easy Strider, for Mike Rea, for all the horses racing this weekend, for mankind, for peace -

Thank you, Bobby, for your miracle.

    Love to you all, Shelley

    Good Morning, Everybody!

I'm just checking posts before getting ready to go to Fair Hill (didn't sleep long enough...too excited about today, too drained about yesterday's intensity with Windy). The digital is charged up ready to take lots of pics.

Shelley, pics are on the way to you...check your e-mail. If anybody else wants them, please e-mail me at lyn.gilbert@gmail.com. I'll check when I get back from Maryland tonight (am going to an opening at Gallery RoCa in Havre de Grace. Luis' exhibit is done, but some of his works are still there.).

These new poems are beautiful...all this inspiration. Thank you all for sharing.

Good Morning, Sweet Bobby J. Were you out grazing????? Oh, if that can be confirmed, I certainly will figure out a way to have 5 minutes with you outdoors...I will bribe with food...!!! Just visualizing you grazing is so peaceful, so soothing. And if its not true, then its something to wish for....Enjoy your bath today....I'm going to see Alex today at Fair Hill. Scratchies to you as well as a big hug...love you so much, sweet one.

Waiting to hear about ACN. It's bath day today, so maybe you can sweet talk someone at NBC to play your "Splish Splash" video when you are getting your bath. But, no dancing around and getting wild...

Lyn and Jazz: Waiting anxiously to hear about your experience at Fair Hill today.

    Chad: Welcome back

Mike C: As always, great addition to the call. I feel like I'm sitting in the stands.

The idea of the bulb garden at NBC is a great idea, but maybe we should think about bulbs with other plants, so that NBC has beautiful flowers and colors all year long in honor of Bobby.

Bobby, I hope it's true that you were outside grazing for a little bit this week. If not this week, we all pray that day is not far away.

Relax and enjoy the attention and treats today sweet boy.

    Jane
That would be HUGE if they indeed did take Bobby out to graze.
    Could this be true?
    How wonderful if it is.

    Alex?????

Mary L...great article on the sling.

Posted by: Sarah at August 12, 2006 1:56 PM

Hiya, Bobbey! Good morning, sweet prince, it's "bath & grooming" day - splish, splash! Loved that video of your bathing process from a couple of months ago. May your day be a golden one. I hope that it is true that you were able to get outside for a little while recently. That must've been SOOO wonderful for you to graze and feel the sunshine on your back once again. Hugs, pets, & "scratches" from your pals in CT _ Robyn, Brent, & Nikita (the horse-loving Husky)

    Dear "Strong One,"

I have been thinking of you and praying for you, too; enjoy your bath today and keep healing! Love Ya, "B!" Many Hugs, Kisses, "Scratchies," and Carrots! Donna

Posted by: Donna at August 12, 2006 1:58 PM

Mary L that is an awsome article. I had to chuckle though, when it said that about 25 times a year, a horse gets stuck somewhere and they have to use a sling to get it out. That sounds funny.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 12, 2006 2:00 PM

What a great host you are Alex! I'm sure all of those coming to Fair Hill will have a great time..and I am envious!

Good morning, Bobby. Bath day! Mmmmmmm...yo do love your baths. Hope you had ACN, and here's to ACD! By the way, did you really get to go out and graze???!! I hope so! Did you get to roll around in the grass, too???

Good morning, Maniacs!! Looking forward to hearing about the Fair Hill visit! Thanks for the report on the interview with the wonderful Edgar Prado. Good luck and safe racing today to Edgar, his mounts, and all others on the tracks.

Posted by: Susan E. at August 12, 2006 2:02 PM

Anxiously awaiting an update on Bobby. Wouldn't that be great if it was true that he got to go outside this week?!?

I pray all horses racing this weekend will cross the finish line safe and sound.

Posted by: Susan in TX at August 12, 2006 2:14 PM

He's not going to go outside for a while yet, needs a clean controlled environment for that left leg for a while yet...

    Interviewer to a BarbaroManiac:

"okay, if you could have an audience with a rock star,...say.....Bono from U2 or Barbaro, which would it be?"

    "Barbaro".

"What about a movie star like Robert Redford or Harrison Ford?"

    "Barbaro"

"Well would you like to sit with a world leader like a president or king or Barabaro?

    "Barbaro"

"Okay how about Dr Richardson or Barbaro?"

    "Ummmmmmmm.........welllllll........aaahhhhhh.......Barbaro!"

    "How about.."

    "BARBARO BARBARO BARBARO!!!!!!!"

EXCELLENT RACING DAY TODAY...some real nice graded stakes on the lawn today in Chicago and at the SPA(watch out for RAMAZUTTI in the Sword Dancer, if he shakes loose easy, LOOK OUT, nice jockey switch to SANTOS HERE)_....I'm heading to the SPA tomorrow AM for 2 days, MECCA OF THE RACING WORLD...

Barbaro, I am so tickled that you didn't like the roses. Your personality lifts me up. I just love your spirit. I love you, precious one!

Posted by: Amie at August 12, 2006 2:24 PM

Mike C is so kewl....he sure knows his racing stuff.

Posted by: Sarah at August 12, 2006 2:28 PM

Mikc C's answer regarding the rumor of Bobby grazing outside and Bobby's continued need for a controlled environment at this point makes sense to me.

Posted by: Sarah at August 12, 2006 2:30 PM

Hasn't Mrs Jackson been taking hand-picked grass to Bobby every day because he's not allowed outside to graze? And obviously because she loves him like crazy!! :-)

Posted by: Jo Edwards at August 12, 2006 2:32 PM

    Jane-

Thanks for your update. Just another example of Edgar Prado being a class act. I was glad to see Dr. R getting out for some fun too.

Thanks Mike C for more of "The Call"

Good morning Barbaro. I hope you enjoy bath day today. That would be neat if they could play your "Splish Splash" video for you.

Posted by: Ashley at August 12, 2006 2:33 PM

After watching Barbaro at the preakness I can no longer watch the races. I am too worried about another horse breaking down. I am more concerned for the safety of the horses and cannot focus on the race.
    Have another comfortable day Barbaro.

Posted by: anne m at August 12, 2006 2:37 PM

Anne...I feel the same way about the racing. I love to watch horses run, but it haunts me whenever I see that a horse is hurt, and I always have that fear in the back of my mind.

Posted by: Jo Edwards at August 12, 2006 2:44 PM

Somewhere along the way, I've missed the "Splish Splash" video. Can someone direct me to it?!

Posted by: Sarah at August 12, 2006 2:48 PM

Good morning HANDSOME!! I hope you had ACN, I am sure you did though. You are just so awesome, I can't believe the spirit and heart that you have. You are such an inspiration to me and thousands of others. You keep on keeping on sweetie and you will be home for Christmas! I LOVE YOU B!!!

I am having trouble getting into chat room - Mike C do you think Edgar was misunderstood about Barbaro going out to graze for a little while?

    Sarah-

Go to the Barbaro Fan Media link at the beginning of this site. There is a link to the "Splish Splash" video near the top under update 15. It's a video that will put a smile on your face.

Great to read the update with news from Peter. Terrific to know that the pain meds have been reduced. I hope that Jane's email is correct and that our beautiful boy gets to take a walk outside this week! I'm so envious of those who went to Fair Hill today. It just sounds - and looks - like utopia. Hoping for another great day for our boy and all the rest of you Barbaromaniacs.

Posted by: Wendy in Colorado at August 12, 2006 3:15 PM

and NBC has posted signs that animals are not to graze...

Bobby would be to stimulated if he went outside. Right now he's a bit stale on this stall rest thing (who can blame him after almost 3 months). But he's doing fine.

Bath day! Hey Bobby?, you make sure they wash behind your ears and that they get all the soap out! Getting the itchies cause of left over soap is the pits.

    Love ya big guy.

Ashley you type faster than I do! :)
With all the races today, and Alex having guest visiting. The update maybe much later today.

No news on Ginfortewin at the Saratoga?

Arlington is the only race track I have ever been to and that was 12 years ago. It's a
BEAUTIFUL place. This was back in Pat Day's hayday!

    JERI.

I dont think he misunderstood, perhaps he didnt get correct info..I just dont see how he can be exposed to dirt and all with the seriousness of the injuries, especially the laminitis infected leg.

Lets face it, he was inches from the unthinkable, the strides he has made are UNREAL, I just don't think they(NBC) will allow that to happen YET...Doc R knows best and whatever he thinks I KNOW is best for BARBARO..

Posted by: mike c at August 12, 2006 3:34 PM

Janice -- I did not see this information anywhere, but I used to ride with a vet. One night he was called out for an emergency foaling, and he delivered a foal with a deformed spine -- like human scoliosis. The deformity caused the irregularities described in Your Host, so I was making an educated guess that's what might have been wrong with Your Host. The description certainly seems to indicate that.

Posted by: Deb at August 12, 2006 3:35 PM

    Thanks, Alex-
I love that they're being able to reduce his pain meds and he's doing so well!

Posted by: Anna at August 12, 2006 3:35 PM

Just wanted to say what a wonderful group of people you all are. However,I envy some of you because you have horses or live near Fair Hill, etc.

I think last weekend, stress was to blame. There's been so much stress from worrying about Bobby, the heat and probably rising gas prices. Like children sometimes, "We just needed a timeout."

Posted by: Melissa Harden, Columbus, GA at August 12, 2006 3:41 PM

Lots of Great things this week.....NO infections, Blood great, right leg healing well, left leg growing hoof, he's eating well and lower meds....BARBARO indeed is a special animal both on and off the track, BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT ALREADY....

ESPN just gave a update regarding the Arlington Million, but no BARBARO info, yet..

Posted by: mike c at August 12, 2006 3:42 PM

You're doing great, Bobby. Keep it up! Today is bath day and I know you'll be excited. Have a beautiful day & I look for more positive reports today. Lots of love!

    Posted by: Cheryl--NY at August 12, 2006 3:49 PM

The horse people probably already know this, but I just learned that there are "bumper stickers" for horses! You might hear more about this later from Rachel.

Maybe the horse people could have pro-Bobby stickers made up for their horses' derrieres!

    GOOD MORNING BARBARO!!!
AND WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING IT IS:-)
PRAYING YOU HAVE A PAIN FREE DAY. HANG IN THERE BIG GUY. WE ARE SENDING POSITIVE ENERGY YOUR WAY. IT'S GREAT TO HEAR THEY'RE LOWERING YOUR PAIN MEDS!!!! DID THEY PUT A TV NEXT TO YOU SO YOU CAN WATCH YOUR BUDDY WIN TODAY?

Fair Grounds Offers Record Stakes Purses in First Post-Katrina Meet
    by Blood-Horse Staff
    Date Posted: 8/11/2006 12:26:51 PM
    Last Updated: 8/11/2006 12:26:51 PM

    Edited Fair Grounds release
Fair Grounds Race Course president Randall E. Soth announced Friday that the New Orleans track's first meet since Hurricane Katrina will offer a record stakes schedule worth more than $7.7 million, the highest totals in the track's 134-year history.
The highlight of the schedule will be Louisiana Derby Day on Saturday, March 10, 2007. Five stakes worth $2.1 million are scheduled, making it the richest day of racing in Louisiana history. Fair Grounds' four grade II stakes, including the 94th running of the Louisiana Derby, will be run on one day.

The four grade II races – which also include the Fair Grounds Oaks, New Orleans Handicap and Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap – are part of a record 10 graded stakes on the 2006-07 slate.

"We are pleased to be able to offer a vastly enhanced stakes program for our first season back in New Orleans," said Soth. "Our goals were to enhance our major event days and fill in gaps in some divisions, and we believe this schedule accomplishes both."

The growth of the schedule is most apparent on the major event days that became the anchor of Fair Grounds' schedule two seasons ago. Each day has grown by one stakes race.

The 16th edition of Louisiana Champions Day on Dec. 9 includes 11 races, with the addition of the Ladies Sprint. The Colonel Power Stakes was moved to "Road to the Derby" Kickoff Day Jan. 13. The grade III Fair Grounds Breeders' Cup Handicap was added to Louisiana Derby Preview Day Feb. 10, and the previously dormant Bienville Stakes returns to the stakes schedule on Louisiana Derby Day.

The other major event is Louisiana Lagniappe Weekend on the meet's closing weekend, March 24-25. Inaugurated for last season's meet at Harrah's Louisiana Downs, Lagniappe Weekend features 10 stakes, including six for state-breds. Five stakes will be run each day.

The Bienville and Esplanade Stakes return to the schedule for the first time in more than a decade. Previously run for state-breds, both races will be sprints for older fillies and mares.

Besides the Champions Day Ladies Sprint, four other new races were added to the schedule: the "Buddy" Diliberto Memorial Handicap, named for the late New Orleans broadcaster, on Dec. 16 for older horses on turf; the Bonapaw Stakes, named for the locally owned Grade I winner, Dec. 23 for sprinters on turf; the Fortin Handicap, named for the street bordering Fair Grounds to the south, for older fillies and mares on March 17, and the Grindstone Stakes, named for the 1996 Louisiana Derby and Kentucky Derby winner, for 3-year-olds on turf on March 24.
