    Barbaro Updates: 47

    updates are now here.

Update 473: Barbara Livingston just put this album together of Lost in the Fog. Her e-mail to me included the following:

Man, I LOVE Lost in the Fog. Mr. Gilchrist is as kind and generous an individual as I've ever met....

I just put this together. I'll try to add more, perhaps at the end of the weekend.

    Thanks Barbara.

Update 472: Rachel at Kennett Florist just left the following comment:

It's a beautiful day here and at NBC. They were digging into the baskets of goodies as soon as we got there today! There were a few staff members bustling about and when I asked how things were the reply was that "they were doing good work here" (Like we didn't know). The respect they have for all animals continues to amaze me.

Things are rolling right along for Dr R's day. The cake and ice cream are now all taken care of (for those who have asked). We're getting really excited, and hope that it is a big surprise... we just have to absorb it all so we can paint a good mental picture for all of you!

As always, thank you to all of you!

    WE BELIEVE!!

I asked how Giacomo got his name, Cheryl was first with the answer (timestamp: 7:45pm), followed by Jen (7:55pm). He is named after Sting's son. Sting is a friend / associate of Giacomo's owner, Jerry Moss.

And here is a quick update on Mike Rea: They Say the Brain Healing has Started.

Update 471: Just spoke to Peter Brette (4:45 pm) and all remains well with Barbaro. Michael had just called him and Michael is at New Bolton now visiting Barbaro. One day at a time!

Update 470: I just spoke to Steve Willard, Giacomo's exercise rider, to get an update on Giacomo today. This is what he had to say:

Giacomo is a happy camper. He is currently grazing outside his barn (10:45 am pacific time) after training this morning. This morning he entered the track at the 3/4 pole shoot (his normal place to enter the track). He stood in for a while, as he normally does, then set off the wrong way to jog a mile and a quarter. He turned in, stood a while, then turned around and galloped a mile and a half. He was a little fresh at the beginning of the gallop and wanted to do more, but then settled down nicely and relaxed. He came home well. A nice routine training day for Giacomo as he gets ready for the Pacific Classic on sunday.

He is the second choice on the morning line (3-1) and has drawn post 4 of 8. Steve did not think the draw mattered much for Giacomo as he will come from behind. Steve talked about how he got his name, does anyone know the story ? If not, I'll post tomorrow.

For those looking for more background information on Lost in the Fog, this is a good article: Lost in the Fog in critical race Career already finished, cancer threatens survival. I remember one time seeing an interview with someone connected with Lost in the Fog and was asked why he was restricted to sprinting (versus going for classic distances). I think the answer was simply he was very good at it. He was pretty close to being seriously considered for 3yo of the year going into the Breeders Cup!

Update 469: Given that it appears Lost in the Fog is undergoing an examination tomorrow, friday, to determine his prognosis, we are planning a vigil for tonight, 7 pm east coast time. Whereever you are, whatever you are doing, spare a bit of time for Lost in the Fog.

Update 468: I did catch up with Barclay Tagg this morning and asked him a few questions about his horses, and one about the Jackson's.

    On Showing Up:
Today was his return to the track (in Saratoga) after his Secretariat win. He jogged off great and jogged one turn of the track. It looks like he has come out of his race well. Barclay is thinking two more races for him this year, but this plan is tentative. The second race the Breeders Cup Turf (mile and a half), the first race to be one of the following three:
Man of War, September 9, 1 mile and 3/8ths
Canada Sky Classic, September 24, 1 mile and 3/8ths
Joe Hirsch Turf, Belmont, October 7, 1 mile and a 1/2

Basically his races remain on the turf and he will be facing older horses for the first time. Stormy Kiss, another Jackson horse trained by Barclay is being pointed for the Ballerina at Saratoga (August 27). I asked Barclay how the Jackson's were doing and what it is like training for them. He clearly enjoys training for them, he said they really deserve good forture (Barbaro's progress, Showing Ups performances etc.) and they are just good people. He noted that you could not ask for nicer people to train for, they let you do your job and are very open.

Finally I asked Barclay about Funny Cide. While he is being pointed for the Woodward (September 2) towards the end of the Saratoga meet, Barclay believes a mile and a quarter is his best trip (Woodward is a mile and an eighth). There is a race in Hoosier Downs (I think) September 30 that they are looking at closely. Again, all remains tentative.

Barclay then went on to tell some very funny stories (as he does). He would make a great book!

Update 467: New Bolton Center's update today: Barbaro has had a very good week:

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to do well, and is being hand-grazed for 20 - 30 minutes a day. "His blood work is completely normal and his vital signs are good," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "I can't complain. Barbaro has had a very good week." Dr. Richardson also reports that Barbaro is no longer using the sling. "His comfort level has improved to the point that when he was in the sling, he wasn't "using" it at all. The sling is only bearing the horse's weight when he wants it to, and Barbaro's comfort level has improved to the point that he was not using the sling to support his weight."

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, August 22 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 466: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (wednesday night). Just walked over to get the news from Michael Matz after I came off my third set this morning. He mentioned that Bobby was out grazing for 30-40 minutes yesterday.
Also, Barclay Tagg is in town for a couple of days. I will try to get an interview with him a little later. Meanwhile, another spectacular morning in Fair Hill today.
    updated thursday 7:10am

Update 465: We have a couple of video tributes: A Tribute to Barbaro (from argentdesign) and When You Believe (from Shannon). We also have an article from the Washongton Post: Barbaro Now Walking Regularly in Recovery, which includes a couple of quotes from Dr. Sweeney:

"We who see him every day know he has been moving well and looking pleased and happy,"

    and

"He's gotten down to where he's getting almost nothing," she said of pain management.

Finally a poem by Susan E (from update 46, timestamp 1:18am):

LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE BOY

What does it take to make Barbaro whole?
A massage, some sunshine, fresh grass in a bowl?

    Stud muffins, apples,
    Baby carrots with greens,
Green and white peppermints dance through his
    dreams.

Michael and Peter and Gretchen and Roy,
Their love and devotion for their brave boy.

Nurses and interns and Doc Dean so keen,
Alie and Rachel and the KF machine,

Posses and prayers and lights that do heal,
A website where everyone says how they feel.

Smartness and courage and Old Soul and heart,
A will to live that has burned from the start.

Good Morning Bobby (when you wake) and team Barbaro.

Alex I suspect that somehow you were involved with the recent video we got of Barbaro grazing and the question and answer session we had last night with Dr. R. Thank you, thank you, thank you for that. Many on this site and also on the forum were requesting new photos and information. This past few days was an absolute feast for the eyes. I do hope that Lost in the Fog will have a successful treatment (removal) for his tumor and will recover rapidly.

    Have a great day everyone!!

    Don't know if anyone knows this. I just found out. Michael Matz's stakes winner Aunt Henny has a bruised foot;

    Aunt Henny misses stakes

Aunt Henny, the Virginia Oaks winner, missed Friday's Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes because of a bruised foot, trainer Michael Matz said.

"It's just about cleared up, but she needs a work, so I don't know what I'm going to do with her yet," Matz said.

Having seen too much "evil" in life, it is personally uplifting to see the goodness triumph. Thank you to all for showcasing the right and the good: to Barbaro, Mr and Mrs Jackson, Dr Richardson and care-givers at NBC, Mr Matz, Mr Prado and on and on..... awe-inspiring to "know" you all.

    Good Morning Bobby,
Waiting to hear that you had ACN. I bet it felt really good to have a nice massage before bedtime. You're getting a little spoiled.

Remember no treats before you have a nice healthy breakfast. (okay, maybe one peppermint)

The candles are getting a little low folks. Please remember to light a couple for Bobby to celebrate all of the good news we've been given over the past week. Also, maybe we could send some healing light to Lost in the Fog.

    Good Morning everybody,

I'm so honored & excited that Dr. R answered my question yesterday on Bloodhorse. It seems like a lot of Bobby's supporters from this site also had their questions chosen for a response.

Who loves ya, Bobby? WE DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I keep thinking of Bobby eating grass from a bowl. What a charmer he is. Susan E., I love your poem.

As others have stressed, we all need to keep lighting those candles at www.gratefulness.org for Barbaro (barba), Mike Rea (Mike), Doctor Richardson (Dr. R), the Jacksons (jacks), Edgar Prado (prado), Lost in the Fog (Foggy), and, of course, Alex (alex), without whom we wouldn't have the quick updates or insider tidbits we rely on so much.

I have a question; I am watching the Matthew Chew Live Cam and a little earlier these two guys were carrying these gallon jugs with tubing coming out of them. They were going in each stall with them. Does anyone know what they may have been doing? They didn't take the horses out of the stalls for whatever they were doing, and it seemed to only take, mabe, 15 seconds.

I echo the excitement about having my question posted last night for Dr. R even though mine was one of those he chose not to answer. However, by not answering - he actually DID answer. Pretty easy to figure.

Just finished reading the transcript of the chat with Dr. R. and I'm even more impressed with the care Barbaro is being given than I was before. (Is that possible? ;-)And, yes, Laura, isn't it great to have something so positive to believe in these days?

Thanks for the news re: Aunt Henny - I was wondering why she seemed to be in a long lay-off. Will pray for her full recovery and successful return to the track.

Again, thanks to Tim, Alex, the Jacksons, Michael and Peter and all at Fair Hill, those terrific people at Kennett Florist, and the caring staff at NBC for all you do for my favorite horse.

The idea that Barbaro is out in his natural environment, enjoying the outdoors for half hour or more is so incredible and joyous.

Dr. Dean's interview was straight on and gave loads of information we wanted and needed.

Thank you, Almighty God. We know exactly why B is healing so well, why he's not in pain, why he's maintaining his strength and weight and keenness, and why he's pulling away so beautifully from that disaster. Our gratitude is yours, in partnership with Dr. Dean and the NBC staff.

Glad to see our Braveheart is now on a steady grazing regimen. He has come a long way and we are sooooo proud of him.

To my Anela SusanW. I haven't forgotten you honey. I still have the Barbaro T shirt you asked me to buy for you, but I have been so busy at work, I have not had a chance to steal out and mail it to you. This Saturday I will go to the Mail Depot and sent it to you Fed Ex next day air. You were right Anela when you told me how lovely the shirt is. I hope medium was a right choice for you. Mine is XL and fits me fine. The medium looks a tad small. But then again it should fit you fine!!! I'll call you at lunch as always.

I thoroughly appreciated the chat with Dr. R. last night. Very informative and very heart-lifting (it was nice to note Dr. R's cautious optimism and get some behind-the-scenes input).

Alex, thank you SO much for your continued diligence in keeping us informed. Please continue to keep us up to date on Lost in the Fog, too. My heart is breaking for him and his "family" of people who love him. Hopefully the news will be good. He's a fighter like our Barbaro.

Good morning, Bobby. Even those of us who have followed your progress ever moment of the day may not have known just what a miracle you are! You are simply AMAZING. I'm so glad to read the "ACN" message this morning. Not because I don't believe, but because I'm anxious, that little corner of fear which knows that sometimes unpleasant things can sort of sneak up on us. I definitely believe in you, Champ, and I know that if anyone can win this race, that winner is you. I'm loving you and sending you healing light and energy 24/7, as always. Be well, Precious One.

In the midst of all of our joy over Barbaro the past week, let us not forget beautiful Foggy. Please include him as an equal part in our vigil for Barbaro - that precious innocent life has a difficult road ahead of him, even if, hopefully, the cancer prognosis is positive and has not spread. There is more than enough love and prayers here to envelope precious little Foggy, and all those connected with him, just as we have with Barbaro. I am sure Barbaro would be the very first to concur and if he could talk would ask us to pray for his equine brother.

Dear God in heaven, please place your healing hands on beautiful Fog, we pray for him the same miracle we are seeing in our Bobby. They are both magnificent creations which You have made and they are so loved. Grant to both of them comfort and healing and keep them always in Your care.

It's truly amazing what these guys go through for our enjoyment. Therefore, it is always our duty, as keepers of animals, to insure their safety and well being in spite of how expensive it can be. It is our utmost responsibility and privelege. Thank God for all who care so much.

****Good Morning Sweet Prince. Hope you slept through last nite after your massage and grass out of a bowl??? My goodness are you getting spoiled or what?? Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

Jazz, say hi to the horses from me...if it weren't for my son's wedding on Sat., I'd try to get there...lucky you....:)...am still planning on 9/2. Then again, I'm planning on 9/5 in DC...

Whoever ArgentDesign is...I saw the video this morning with tears running down my face. Thank you so much. Let me know who you are so I can send you a hug via e-mail...o()o()o - that's the symbol my son, his soon-to-be-wife and I use for a group hug. Actually, Liz came up with it and it kinda stayed with us...o()o()o.

Just came out of a distance Reiki sending session for some clients...felt a lot of equine energy joining in and THAT got me crying again. I love how the generosity of the people here extends beyond Barbaro - to Mike Rea, LITF, all the horses who left us too soon (esp. the Great Ruffian and Gallant Secret), Aunt Henny and others that I can't think of at the moment.

    Lord, I'm getting maudlin...sorry.

I was able to read the transcript from Dr. R.'s chat...what a sweet man, what a talented, compassionate vet. His life will never be the same, will it?

I still see Alex setting up a talk show of some sort...he WILL, of course, have to invite some of the Barbaromaniacs on so we can all tell our stories...:) Seriously, Alex, thank you for all that you do to keep us updated, informed, educated and just plain glad to be alive right here, right now. I've got to find out where The Whip is so I can buy you a beer. I know its not far from me...

ACN, ACN...the three letters I look for in the mornings. Bobby, you're getting more and more sunshine and that has to be good for your hind legs as well. I'll assume horses need Vitamin D for their bones just like humans do...

Gotta go and do some pre-wedding stuff. Will be in and out the next few days.

Thanks Alex for the updates/wonderful news.

    Take it easy, Big Boy,,,,

Here is an article from the Mercury News on Barbaro and one on Lost in the Fog..

    http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/horse_racing/15275864.htm

The colt's comfort level has taken a surprising turn since Richardson said in early July the prognosis for a full recovery was ``poor.''

``I think we're lucky his tissues are fairly healthy,'' Richardson said. ``I don't know why he's more comfortable than some horses with the same condition.''

I love reading about Barbaro walking around, and grazing 30 to 40 minutes yesterday.

When I saw the video, I wondered where the sling was.

Barbaro seems to have a very high tolerance for pain, and that's a great thing1

I'm praying for Foggy tomorrow - I hope and pray the cancer is contained to the spleen, that he can have the surgery, that the surgery is successful, and he can go on to live a full and normal life.

    Good Morning Team,

Last night's online chat with Dr. R was quite informative - he is a real class act. We learned much more about our boy's treatment and it was very thoughtful of the Jacksons and Dr. R to allow us all to participate - so thanks so much for that.

Thanks again too Alex for your fantastic work here on Tim Woolley's site. Without this avenue for updates and information, and the chance to share thoughts and good wishes, there would not be the outpouring for Barbaro that exists today.

Have a great day everyone, and especially our Special Boy. The description yesterday of him laying down, resting on his sternum, eating grass from a bowl is just precious - that's one picture I would love to see.

    Steve:

another author! Congratulations on writing your story...when you've got completed, I'm suggesting you get it copyrighted. There are 3 very generous people who have posted "Barbaro's Dream/Champion Heart" on their websites for me and I've got the copywrite process going - just need an illustrator to get the look "just right"...Melissa H, Margaret and Shannon are 3 of the many people who have been so supportive of the story (I owe you)...maybe we should think about publishing a collection of all the poetry, artwork, stories (then we'd be able to find illustrators)...with proceeds to go between the Barbaro Fund, anti-slaughter programs, track safety, horse rescue - some combination or simply the Barbaro Fund.

    Its a thought...

On your site with Anthology of Poems you have my

Barbaro In The Hospital . Thank you, but also you must know that I used the old song "Tammy " for cadence and meter. I acknowlegded using Tammy in my original post but sometime it got separated from my post. So I doubt if this should be used in any publlished collection of any kind as has been discussed on the site, because although the words for Barbaro are mine, I did use the song which is not. Just wanted to let you know this, and I don't remember who wants to make a collection. This is just a heads up in case , and also thank you for your site. It has some of the most moving pieces on it and you have done a lotof work compiling it all so thanks again.

ANY COLORADO PEOPLE AND EVERYONE! IMPORTANT ANIMAL NEWS!

The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keensburg,CO is closing and they are pressed for time in trying to find homes for 150 big cats, bears and wolves that were rescued from abusive private owners. This is really sad and I emailed the Director, Pat Craig ,and received a reply that I will post here. They are trying to get enough funding to care for these animals while they are scrambling to find homes for them or they will be euthanized. They have a nice website that tells you all about them and the animals( lots of photos) and why they have to close because of lack of funding. The cost of meat for one week is over $5000.00 alone.

I went on their site and made a donation in honor of Barbaro from the Barbaromaniacs at Tim Woolley Racing and Mike Rea.
I was going to order some donuts for NBC but this had to take precedence. This is so sad and heartbreaking for them.
    the post:

Yes it’s true – and all we are doing right now is asking for support while we try to find new homes for the animals. If we get help – then we will be able to stay open while we search for new homes – and if we don’t get much help… then we will have no other choice. Thanks for your interest in helping.

Hello. Someone on www.timwoolleyracing.com ( a Barbaro update site ) is from your state and posted that you might have to shut down due to a lack of donations and that your animals may have to be destroyed. Is this correct? I will post your response and maybe some of the many kind hearted people that read there can help.

In my post of 1:59 to Melissa Hardin I said that I used the song Tammy to write "Barbaro in the Hospital" so I don't think it can be published since I don't own the song. Saw where you thought of publlishing all the stories, etc., with the proceeds going to the Barbaro fund.

that is such a fabulous idea and I'm sure everyone would willing give their work for that great cause. But I can't give Barbaro in the Hospital because it is not original. I hope your
idea works out- it is great and will help the fund. thanks for understanding.

Thank God for another comfortable night for the Champ. It was great reading the transcript from Bloodhorse on last night's edition of "Talkin' Horses. The Q&A format granted me the opportunity to gain some insight into Bobby's recovery. It made me really happy to learn that Dr. R has really fallen for Bobby. In particular, he cited his charisma and the fact that he KNOWS that the staff is trying to help him- in other words, Bobby's ability and intelligence to adapt. Dr. R also stated that his fondness for Bobby is in part due to "being in the presence of GREATNESS. Yeah!!!!!

Shannon, beautiful video and Susan E, I loved your poem. As I've said before, we are so fortunate on this site to share in the talents of so many gifted people. Just one more blessing Barbaro has given us.

Everyone, make it a "comfortable" day and take care,

Good morning,Everyone, and Good morning Dear Barbaro.

Just checking in for the upadates and to "Amen" the posts. I decided, that (for today at least), my favorite photos are the one with Barbaro smiling straight-on into the camera, with Dr Dean looking, proudly, at him; and the one with Edgar kissing Barbaro.

I will carry those images with me today, especially when I need a smile.

Please continue to pray, speak, and visualize an operable, BENIGN tumor for Lost In The Fog.

Have a wonderful, miraculous day, Everyone.

    ^_^

    Chris Byers,

I wonder if they have contacted Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. I don't know exactly where they are located but somewhere in the southwestern part of the U.S.

I could try and find out more about Best Friends. I know it's a HUGE sanctuary.

    Lots of love big guy.

Glad you all liked the video, it is for us. By us, I mean all the people here who have been here tirelessly waiting and praying and hoping for Barbaro. We know he is not out of the woods yet, but we can't help but celebrate his baby steps.

Thank you for posting the lovely poems, Melissa, Susan and WM, I swear some of you are professional writers. I couldn't write a poem if my life depended on it. Thank you for sharing, I appreciate your talents.

Someone already mentioned this, but I to am absolutely blown away by the talented creative people this board has inspired and brought together in unity for our guy.

Lets continue to hope and pray for that day when Barbaro leaves NBC, however long it will be, I think its safe to say; that we will all be with him every step of the way.

google ads: we are experimenting with google ads, so the site might appear odd from a design standpoint for a little while (apologies). by my estimations we can generate $1k / month in revenue for no additional work. if we do run google ads i will operate under full disclosure, i.e. how much the site makes, and how much goes to charity (my plan is a split between site running costs and the rest to some horse-related fund). it will be nice for some of the money to defray costs as the site needs bandwidth and other stuff now that it did not need when we had 6 visits a day.

Did the left hind shoe you mention in the press release dated May 20th aggravate the laminitis in any way or did it slow its development? Would you recommend using these shoes in future? Thanks for all the extensive information.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Aleo at the reception before the award ceremony. Sprinter of the Year was the popular "Lost in the Fog" who garnered his only defeat in the Breeders' Cup Sprint. Owner Harry Aleo said, "Secretariat lost a few races; Man o' War lost, too. So, Lost in the Fog's 10 for 11; that's not too bad. With a little bit of racing luck, we'll be right back here next year.

Hello all and good morning sweet Barbaro!

Great transcript of Dr. DR's interview/chat on Bloodhorse. Wasn't aware that Bobby was out of the sling (or that the sling didn't actually hold him up). Very encouraged about the decreased possibility that his other feet would develop L.
    Way to go Bobby!

Another cause for concern that the Barbaro Nation might want to do something about is that Idaho State has asked for permission to kill up to 75% of the wolves within the Lolo District of
Clearwater National Forest. And, they want to repeat the slaughter every year for the next five years. The petition to U.S. Fish and Wildlife urging them to reject Idaho's request is here: http://go.care2.com/e/mgk/po/SWo.

Continued prayers and thoughts of you enjoying your outings, dear Barbaro!

ACN, Barbaro you are our miracle happening.

I'll bet you can't wait to go outside today with your best buddy, Dr. R. What a bond the two of you have. It is so evident just how much you love and trust him when we see the two of you together.

Mr and Mrs Jackson and Michal Matz, thank you for preparing Barbaro to be able to fight this long fight. You are wonderful, caring people. Michael, he lights up our lives as the old song goes.

Edgar, Barbaro is so lucky that you were riding him when the injury happened. Your quick thinking and his trust in you to do what you wanted him to do, gave him the chance to be saved.

Shannon, your video is truely special. The song is one of my very favorites.

I sure hope they find the very best surgeon for Foggy. My prayers go out to him.

    Chris Byers,

I am so happy for you that Barbaro has opened your heart to being an animal advocate. What wonderfully caring people we have here. I am thrilled by the responses you have received and am excited to make a donation to the sanctuary (small though it may be, it IS something).

Susan W--thank you for replying to my post last evening. I just had to get my little story out there. Did you see Ruffian race? She was SO gorgeous. I have a room which has her picture, Seattle Slew's, and Secretaiat's. The opposite wall is reserved for Bobby.

Very happy to be a part of this caring community.

Best healing wishes to our Bobby and LITF and any others in need.

Hi Folks--Just have to jump in here with info not pertaining to Barbaro.
#####Trust me--don't waste your time contacting the Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari in Nebraska. This is LAST place these animals need to go--they would be better off euthanized (trust me) and they don't have adequate facilities to handle the animals they currently house. It's run by the Henry Doorly Zoo, but they've had USDA inspectors making visits there because the animals have not been properly cared for.

As for Best Friends--WONDERFUL group! I volunteered with them for Katrina rescue and brought home 2 dogs from NOLA. They are currently working to airlift 150 dogs out of Lebanon so they can be adopted in the US due to the horrible situation there. They would not have the facilities to house the animals, but might have suggestions, since they have a licensed wildlife rehabber on staff: www.bestfriends.org.

I have sent an email to the Omaha Henry Doorley Zoo who actually oversees the wildlife park near Omaha. They are the premier big cat conversationists so hopefully they will be able to help. I will let you know what I hear if I get anything, otherwise I'm planning to give them a call later this afternoon.

Yes, Skyler, I too need to educate myself on this issue. I was thoroughly taken aback when I read Dawn's post. I certainly don't want to send animals where they will not be taken care of properly!

I hope no one is offended that I brought this up but the issue will get more exposure here than in the forum and time is of the essence as they announced their sitiuation and imminent closure this Monday 8/14. I know we are here for Bobby but I am proud that we can be like Bobby, too. If these animals are euthanized because of a lack of a home that will be a shame beyond description.

Glad to hear that Barbaro had another restful night and that he is doing well.

    Handsome boy,
Keep up the good work and being the model patient that you are. Dr. R commented last night what a smart boy you are and how you really are adapting well to your situation. So many people are praying for you and sending happy, healing thoughts your way. Soak them in along with the sunshine and fresh air and keep that handsome chin up :)

    Hola Barbaro Nation,

I can read the doc's transcript a 100 times. Wonderful progress. It is the hallmark of all great Champs, human and animal: keep fighting even when you fall back. Barbaro if you played basketball you would be Michael Jordan, if you were a boxer you would be Muhammad Ali and if you were a "lifeline and information provider you would be Alex. Great champs all. You are showing us "el Barbaro" should be in the hall of fame of champs.

SUSAN thanks for the info: getting on that one right away. What a shame

Foggy, I am sending you a sizable portion of my Barbaro vibes. If you can run with a tumor healing is a cinch.

    This could happen.
In a few months from now an Equine Ambulance with sirens going full blast pulls up to the main entrance to Lael Stables, the door to the ambulance opens and the ramp slides forward and extends its self to the ground. Exiting the Ambulance will be his support staff, each carrying arm loads of donated gifts consisiting of carrots, mints, etc. Finally this exquisitely powerful and handsome figure emerges wearing an autographed custom made blanket from Churchill Downs that says "Barbaro" on the side, and finally this gallant
warrior who has touched the soul of an entire nation says, Mom, Gretchen, I'm home.

    #### Linda R (and Skylar): While I hated to post anything at all negative on this site, I just felt I should say something before you wasted your time re: the CO wildlife sanctuary.

And back to POSITIVE--what a great chat with Dr. Richardson last night! I was amused that we all obviously overloaded the site in our eagerness to "hear" about Barbaro! I'd love to see how many people logged on to the site vs. their previous chats. Has to be a record!! It just blew me away that he actually lays in his stall while they re-bandage his left leg/hoof! I can't think of a single horse I've worked with that would even come CLOSE to allowing that! Barbaro just continues to amaze me. . .

More strength and sunshine to Barbaro!
    Keep believing!

Hi Chris - I'm not offended at all - I don't think there is any question all on this board probably love animals, and would like to help. I just think we need to really be cognizant about this board, and the intention - Alex mentioned bandwidth, etc. and defraying costs only this morning. Couldn't this be on the discussion board with the other non-Bobby related issues - in its own folder it would stand out, and there seems to be lots of exposure over there judging from the number of posts!!

I'm glad you brought it up, just think it could be better served on the other board.

a quick point that someone else also made. I did not want to hint that costs were becoming too high, the more people that use this site, the better as we will be able to raise more money via google's ad program. that's a good thing as i plan to take proceeds from the money we make and contribute it to a cause important to the site (after covering some of the costs for that month). once we have officially started google adsense (still playing around with it) i will note this in an update etc.

LYNNIE, I LOVED ELVIS TOO. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S BEEN 29 YEARS, I REMEMBER BEING AT THE SWIMMING POOL WITH MY LITTLE FRIENDS THE DAY HE DIED. I WAS ONLY 10, BUT I REMEMBER EVERYONE BEING SO UPSET. AS I GOT OLDER, I LEARNED MORE & MORE ABOUT HIM AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HIS MUSIC!! You are so correct, Cheryl, Elvis' very last concert was in Indianapolis in June of 1977, and he died 2 months later on August 16th. I was also fortunate to see Elvis that same year in February when he appeared at the Sportatorium down here in Hollywood, Florida. It was an evening I will never, ever forget. Even though he was bloated and overweight, his voice was as pure and beautiful as ever ... even moreso.

Thanks for rekindling that memory for me, Cheryl! Elvis was also a very Old Soul who was gentle, kind, loving and compassionate to animals. Remember his song, "Old Shep"? ... still brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it!!!

I ALSO SEE 'LOST IN THE FOG' HEALED ... LAST NIGHT WHILE LYING IN BED AND PRAYING, I ENVISIONED GOD ACTUALLY LIFTING THE CANCER FROM HIS BODY AND FILLING HIM WITH HEALING WARMTH AND LIGHT.

I do not allow negative thoughts or images to enter my mind regarding Bobby or LITF, and if I slip, I immediately change my thought, my perception and create a new reality of healing and recovery. I will not read any negative posts on this board, and my only suggestion to all of you who may witness negative posts from certain people who are repetitive and counter-productive ... do not reply at all because that only continues to 'feed' and expand the issue with even more posts countering yours. Just do not respond to anything negative and let it go and move on.

    FOR ALEX ...

A poem, that resulted from the amazing story of Your Host that was posted, as well as from Barbaro's shining example.

    It's What You Can't See
(Inspired by the words of trainer "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons)

"It's what you can't see that matters,"
Or so said one trainer of old,
What's deep down inside can't be shattered,
    All champions are inwardly gold.

A horse may not always "look" perfect,
But still have a fire deep inside,
To the keen eye of someone who's watching,
He'll show his true spirit and pride.

If we go by external appearance,
Then flaws sometimes get in the way
Of seeing the true inner being,
That tells more than looks can convey.

But one colt has shown us so clearly,
    While proving he does want to mend;
That even when injured and hurting,
His strength and his will have no end.

    And trying beyond what's "expected",
    As Barbaro does every day,
    Lets breakthroughs and miracles happen,
Revealing new dreams on the way.

To some degree, we're all imperfect,
    Which doesn't diminish our worth.
For even the bruised and the broken
Contribute so much to this earth.

That trainer knew what he was saying,
    When searching for brilliance unknown,
He knew that the essence of champions
    Surpasses what's physically shown.

"It's what you can't see that matters,"
So we gaze through the eyes of the soul,
And beauty and truth, heart and courage,
    Trump everything outward we know.

``I think we're lucky his tissues are fairly healthy,'' Richardson said. ``I don't know why he's more comfortable than some horses with the same condition.''

    Answer for Dr. R ...

BECAUSE HE IS THE ANNOINTED ONE AND WE ARE WITNESSING A MIRACLE IN THE MAKING ... It defies words and even what we 'see' with our own eyes, but it's happening because this is God's Work Being Done right before our eyes, ears and entire beings. We are thanking God for healing our Bobby 'as if' it has already happened, and that is exactly 'why' he will be completely healed.

It's hard to understand this dynamic unless you have read books on how this works ... from reading certain posts here, I know that Loretta, Lyn, Jeanette C and others know exactly how this works!! Thanks to all of them for their continued optimism and positive energies going forth!!

ALSO .... MUST THANK EVERYONE ALEX AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO PARTICIPATED IN GIVING US THE Q&A FROM LAST NIGHT'S CHAT WITH DR. R. VERY EDUCATIONAL, INSPIRATIONAL AND UPLIFTING! THANKS TO ALL WHO PITCHED IN.

THANKS TO OUR POET LAUREATES AND VIDEOGRAPHERS WHO CONTINUE TO AMAZE ME WITH THEIR INCREDIBLE TALENTS AND, MOST OF ALL, THE DEPTH OF LOVE IN THEIR HEARTS AND SOULS!!

I read an interview in a horse publication with BTagg with the 'comedy of errors' (as he called it) on getting Showing Up to 'show up' at the Colonial Cup in June. Delayed horse vans, a midnight call to blacksmith, lost grooms....

In person, it must have been very funny in the telling.

    FOR CATHY IN NC ...

    I JUST LOVE THIS:

Guys, this am on the radio an old Elton John song, "I'm Still Standing" came on and some of the words(not all) reminded me of Barbaro:

Don't you know I'm still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I'm still standing after all this time...

Just touched me in a way for the naysayers who have commented on Barbaro's plight. But another great day for Barbaro and all is well!!Positive thoughts always and once again a "thank you" to Alex for making this all happen for us to share our thoughts and efforts.

I am such a music lover and I find 'just the right words' in so many great songs to fit different circumstances and occasions, and "I'm Still Standing" is WITHOUT A DOUBT a PERFECT mantra for Bobby ...

More good news continues from NBC about Bobby. Let us hope that we hear good news about Lost In the Fog--- that his case is curable; and that he comes through what ever procedures are implemented-- that he is able to have and absolutely normal life.. Positive thoughts to him and all his connections.

Can anybody clarify what I am doing wrong?I am unable to access links to articles in the DRF -- this despite the fact that I have signed up for the free online membership; and have repeatedly tried to log in. I would love to be able to read some of these articles that Alex cross references that are in the DRF.

    Help????

``I think we're lucky his tissues are fairly healthy,'' Richardson said. ``I don't know why he's more comfortable than some horses with the same condition.''

This is what I believe (my poem from the past).

    Just Look in His Face!
    (In Honor of Barbaro)

Just look, old souls you see,
Has he been on earth many times before?
    Oh, what wisdom you see.

Just look deep, old souls you see,
His eyes always are waiting for what is next.
Always remembering from the last race what he needs for the next.

Just look deeper; don't you want to watch those old souls too?
He is watching, grazing, running, healing, and pleasing.
Did you look for that old soul hiding there?

Just look, make it quick, don't miss those old souls resting there,
See an old soul asking to be set free,
You want to be inside of that old soul too.

    Just look
    Just look deep
    Just look deeper
    Just look, make it quick

This horse is one special horse.

God is so happy that we have turned to him for Barbaro's healing.

As I started praying for him yesterday, a calmness settled over me and I felt in my heart that our Heavenly Father has already touched another of his beautiful horses by the name of Lost in the Fog.

What a wonderful time to be alive.......seeing all these "miracles" manifest from our Heavenly Creator. We are so blessed to be living at this time.

Thank you again, Father for "The Miracle of Barbaro" and the miracle that you will manifest in "Lost in the Fog".

Came across the following article (some of which we already know) about Dr. Richardson.

Dr. Richardson Upbeat About Barbaro's Program

    http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=34906

    Last 3 paragraphs:

Regarding the internal fixation hardware installed in Barbaro's fractured leg, Richardson said the implants would only be removed if they were associated with an ongoing infection. The soonest the surgeon expects Barbaro's leg to be solid enough to take off the cast is early September.

Looking back at when Barbaro's Preakness breakdown first occurred, Richardson said, "I felt very sick to my stomach when I saw it. I knew immediately it was a very, very severe injury. I pretty much thought exclusively in medical terms, about the nature of the fracture, whether the skin was broken, and considering where he was, I figured he would come to me.

"This is what I do," Richardson continued of why he decided to take on Barbaro's case. "This is why I get up in the morning. This is the type of cases I have worked my whole career to get better at. I certainly can't imagine not wanting to try this. I am sure some would not have wanted it because it is so high profile," continued Richardson, who is still getting used to signing autographs when he visits Saratoga Racecourse. "I certainly don't think I am the only person who could have helped him."

    Hi, Barbaromaniacs!

am back from my errands. A bit to pass along.

Alex, glad to see you're going to be making money via google...it makes sense.

I found The Whip Tavern while on the way home this afternoon. Alex, you didn't tell us it literally is in some of the most beautiful countryside I've ever seen. I wish I had my camera to take photos. It was breathtaking to say the least. The outside of The Whip reminds me of some buildings I've seen in the UK (making me even more homesick for my "dose of Dorset" - I can hear the poems in my head that need to be written...).

Anyway, stopped at the Pet Value store in Parkesburg (outside of Coatesville) today -was talking to a sweet young woman who has a friend who works at NBC (lucky...). We discussed Barbaro and I gave her Tim's website...so we may have a new "family member".

I'll be home from yoga by 7 tonight...I'm in for the vigil. Nothing would keep me away from this one. When I was meditating/sending Reiki this a.m., I felt a lot of loving energy starting to gather around LITF - including Barbaro's. However this comes out, he is gonna be so free. I was in tears at all the energies and love surrounding him. I'm emotional enough with the wedding on Sat, but LITF has that same sweet energy that Bobby has...will light the candles now so they're all ready...

Gotta go...be back after the vigil and will be on chat for a short time tonight. Tomorrow is Windy/Stormy day, yoga jam with a cookout at my teacher's home (good way for me to relax before Sam's and Liz's wedding on Sat. With the way things are going, I'll probably end up with new Reiki clients before tomorrow night is done. I can't wait to meet Coeur Vive...hopefully next week. He also has some SWEET energy...). Saturday is the big day.

Life is so darn good, yes????

    Healing and Peace,

    What an a** I am.

Lynette, thank you for that post. I missed it yesterday, but, and this should tell you much...Dr. Dean is a miracle. I saw the fractures and from being in racing, thought...no way can he survive. The fact that he is alive and kicking and grazing...is beyond belief.
And I think Dr. Dean is not giving himself enough credit. 27 pieces of pastern bone? a fractured sesamoid and canon bone?
And he put it all back together...Incredible.

Barbaro has had a very good week

    August 17, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to do well, and is being hand-grazed for 20 – 30 minutes a day. “His blood work is completely normal and his vital signs are good,” said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. “I can’t complain. Barbaro has had a very good week.” Dr. Richardson also reports that Barbaro is no longer using the sling. “His comfort level has improved to the point that when he was in the sling, he wasn’t “using” it at all. The sling is only bearing the horse’s weight when he wants it to, and Barbaro’s comfort level has improved to the point that he was not using the sling to support his weight.”

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania’s George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, August 22 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

Dr. Richardson is wonderfully refreshing! His ego is in the right place and he is human like the rest of us and is not afraid to show it. He is a genuinley humble man.

As said "Until he is doing what a normal horse can do I am not going to consider it success."

    GREAT man!

Hi, Everyone! Thanks again as always to Alex and everyone at TWR to everyone at NBC, especially to Doc Dean and staff, to Michael, Edgar, Rachelle and everyone at Kennett Floral, and my friends here who have become like family.

Haven't read ANY of the posts today, just skimmed through Alex' updates and the NBC site's update and am so joyful I could just gallop around in crazy, pointless circles. My workmates might think me a bit nutzoid, so I'll refrain. On the other hand, they probably wouldn't even take notice. They know me too well.

While I was reading, something came to mind that I wanted to share. Do you remember the beautiful lyrics in "Because We Believe"? Andre Bocelli performed it, as only he can, at the Olympics.

taking a bit of license to adapt the lyrics so they work for our gorgeous boy...

"Like stars across the sky...He is here to shine..All of us here...because WE BELIEVE"

Andre Bocelli is an accomplished horseman as well as tenor extraordinaire. When I heard those lyrics in my head, as I was reading...I could see precious Bobby full out, mane and tail flying straight out behind him.. I believe that one day soon, it will happen again

Hi Renee ... I have seen so many wonderful videos and DVDs of Elvis ... the VERY BEST ONE EVER, for me, is the 'new' and expanded DVD of "Elvis ... That's The Way It Is" ... it features ALL the behind the scenes preparation and rehearsing for Elvis' concerts back in 1972 at The International Hotel in Las Vegas. It shows him 'horsing around' (pardon the very INTENTIONAL pun here!) with the band members and his back-up singers ... it shows him being so very funny with outtakes from his rehearsals, and then the best is watching his incredible onstage performances culled from 6 nights at The International! If you haven't seen THIS one, it is A MUST!! Also, "Elvis On Tour" is another good one!!

LET'S LIGHT MORE CANDLES AND GO TO OUR KNEES FOR LOST IN THE FOG...this quote is from his trainer (from article at the top of the page)

"On Friday, they're planning on running a small camera through his abdomen to check and see if there is any more cancer," Gilchrist said. "We hope they don't find anything, and if they don't, you move on to the next step. The choices are chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. If you do nothing, the horse would make it maybe a year. Neither Dr. Smith nor I felt chemo or radiation was good, so that leads to one choice: an operation to remove his spleen."

The surgery tentatively is scheduled for Wednesday, and doctors say Lost in the Fog has a 50-50 chance of survival.

"It's very complicated and not very common," Gilchrist said. "He's a warrior, and this is a race he really needs to win right here."

    God bless you, Foggy Warrior!

I thought I would post this address for Barbara Livingston's Gallery for any new people who are not aware of it. She has absolutely beautiful pictues that you can just spend hours going through and looking at.

When you get to this page, you can go to her Barbaro gallery to see lots of pictures of him.

If you click on the "On Track" section, you can find pictures of Lost in the Fog on pages 15, 16, 20, 24, and 25. There are probably more, but I kept getting sidetracked just looking at all the beautiful horses.

Barbaro, I hope you are having a good day and that you enjoy your time outside. Stay strong.

Being a Bay area resident, up on the Oakland Hills above Golden Gate Fields where Lost in the Fog raced so successfully, and where the fog comes in over the Golden Gate bridge, across the Bay and right over GGF, we consider him to be our local hero. Our hearts are breaking - he is ONLY four years old!

I find myself at work on that desperate edge of tears and with my heart quaking in fear. It is so reminiscent of Bobby's breakdown, the days and weeks after - and after Bobby's such miraculous progress. It feels like a very dirty trick, and it is hard to be philosophic that this is just "life".

The San Francisco Chronicle and Contra Costa Times both had front page stories with photos of LITF, and I can't help but think this is a result of the public's increased awareness of these beautiful creatures used for our entertainment :: all credit to Barbaro, part of his ongoing and continually expanding legacy.

I am encouraged and thankful to read LITF's trainer's words:

"The surgery is very complicated. It's very hard to find people who actually have taken spleens out of horses. We have been talking to vets from Iowa, Virginia, and Canada. I'm treating this like it is my father, brother, or best friend. I DON'T CARE IF WE HAVE TO FLY SOMEBODY IN FROM RUSSIA. GET THE BEST GUY AVAILABLE."

Sally from last night, wondering if people really cared enough to take care of their injured/sick race horses, this is one more example ...

Thank you all for listening. I'm a basket case, again. You understand...

Love to you, Bobby, our bright shining beacon of light.

    Hi Everyone!
Just a little something I thought I’d share with you, in case you’re interested—
The day after the Preakness, I made myself a “prayer bead bracelet” for Barbaro and haven’t taken in off since. I wear it so that each time I look down and notice it, it’s like sending out a little prayer for Barbaro. I made my first bracelets following Hurricane Katrina and ended up selling a number of them to raise money for the hurricane victims, and thought I might be able to do the same for The Barbaro Fund. There are SO MANY great ways to contribute (Dr. Dean’s birthday, etc.) that I ABSOLUTELY don’t want to take away from those, but if folks would get some enjoyment from a bracelet, I thought I’d throw it out there!
The bracelets are made of colored glass beads strung on black leather cord. I’ve assigned a “meaning” to each bead relevant to Barbaro’s life and healing. I’ll make as many as I can ‘til I’m out of beads (or money!) and just ask you to send a $10 check made out to The Barbaro Fund along with three 39 cent stamps to cover my mailing costs. I’ll mail off the checks every week, since I have to do this “low-tech”. If you’d like one, please email me at FiveWolvesStudio@aol.com. I’ll send you my mailing info and the meanings behind the beads, so I don’t have to take up room on this site!

Sorry, Renee, I can't answer this but I know that he couldn't continue racing with the hoof problem.
I found out about the hoof cracks from the article that Alex gave a link to in his update.

"Trainer Greg Gilchrist said he and owner Harry J. Aleo decided Sunday morning to end the 4-year-old colt's racing career because of chronic cracks in his hooves and planned to make a formal announcement Monday"

Maybe Alex knows more about how they're caused.

It is at times like this that I have to stop and remember the words "Stop and know that I am God"...He is the true healer. I have been praying for this gorgeous horse since yesterday and I can already feel that our Father has healed him.

I'm sure NBC does address all medical issues. IT seems, from what I've read, that LITF's connections are contacting people all over the country. This is not a common surgery in horses and they are searching to find the best.

However, we're jumping a little ahead of ourselves. First that have to do the diagnostic tests tomorrow to see in the cancer has spread. They've made it perfectly clear that if it has spread, there will be no surgery.

I think our vigil tonight should concentrate on the outcome of the diagnostic tests coming out favorably. Then we can deal with the surgery next week.

    What do you think??

God Bless our Bobby!! The program with Dr. Richardson was outstanding -- thanks to all for that gift to us. Bobby is also remembered in my prayers round the clock, and candles burning, and remembered to shrines. (I grew up with Franciscan nuns.)

I keep getting this visualization of the communication going on (the relationship) between Bobby and Dr. R - incredible! Bobby's outings with Dr. R and special company have to be sacred moments for both.

    Big brother gets his wish

    GODFREY

Walter Shankle's voice shook here and there as he talked about his big brother, who sat smiling under a cowboy hat in his wheelchair a few feet away.

Robert Shankle was a day away from a horseback ride, one he's been wanting for years. His little brother, Walter Shankle, wanted to make sure it went off without a hitch.

After all, Robert Shankle used to keep his little brother in line when they were kids. Never mind that Robert Shankle, now 74, grew up legally blind, epileptic, and with cerebral palsy and developmental disabilities. He was fast as a panther and built like a prizefighter. When the brothers were kids in East St. Louis, Robert Shankle would give his little brother a thump on the head when he acted up. Advertisement

"Bob kept us from getting into too much trouble, I guess," Walter Shankle, 68, said. "He'd pop you on the top of the head, and those fingers could hurt."

But that was more than 50 years ago. Robert's health has worsened. He spends most of his time in a wheelchair. And two weeks ago, blood tests unexpectedly showed cancer in Robert's brain, bones, kidneys, everywhere. Doctors aren't hopeful that much can be done now.

So Walter Shankle wanted Wednesday to be a good day for his big brother. Robert Shankle has had a lifelong fascination with horses. And he wanted to take just one more ride.

"I can't explain it," Walter Shankle said. "But he used to talk about it all the time. It's something he really wants to do."

Southern Illinois Community Support Services provides care for Robert Shankle. His caregivers looked for three years for a place where he could ride, but the options either were too expensive or didn't have the necessary facilities.

The Beverly Farm Foundation, though, could accommodate him. The group, which houses about 400 adults with developmental disabilities, has operated its Community Therapeutic Equestrian Program in Godfrey for more than 15 years. Volunteers run it on donations.

Dennis Highley, one of Robert Shankle's caretakers, helped find the place.

"He keeps talking about it," Highley said. "He'll go on and on about those horses. He's excited."

Robert Shankle lives with several roommates in a Belleville home also owned by Southern Illinois Community Support Services.

He used to work at St. Clair Associated Vocational Enterprises, a day program for adults with developmental disabilities. He made a lot of friends. When they heard his health had slipped, they made get-well cards out of construction paper. Yellow. Blue. Pink. And every one of them had magazine pictures of horses cut out and pasted on the front.

    Obsession with horses

Walter Shankle, who lives in Belleville, works as a full-time chaplain to Metro East police departments and as a part-time cop. He was the first to arrive at his big brother's house Wednesday morning.

A cousin and his wife showed up later. They also tried to figure out this obsession with horses. Robert Shankle has ridden one or two. He liked carousel rides. And "The Lone Ranger." But they couldn't pinpoint anything beyond that.

Robert Shankle was more a city kid than the rustic type, they said. He was his neighborhood's unofficial doorman. He manned the door at the family's Quality Cleaners and Furriers, and for both Miller's Market and Wanda's Confectionery down the street.

"He'd hear those delivery trucks all the way down on State Street and make it back to the doors in time to open them," Walter Shankle said. "He could run like a deer."

But now Robert Shankle wanted to ride. By 9 a.m., he was ready. He wore blue jeans, a golf shirt and a bicycle helmet that leaned to his right.

When his van arrived at the Beverly Farm stables, Robert Shankle was lowered out. Workers wheeled him up a ramp where a white Appaloosa horse named Indiana Jones stood still. Walter Shankle caught it all on video.

"Hold on to that horn," Walter Shankle called out to his big brother.

"I got it," Robert Shankle said.

A worker rode on the horse behind him. More handlers walked on each side, too. But Robert Shankle held the reins.

    "Easy," he said. "Easy."

Pat Huff came to watch the cousin-in-law she has known for ages. As soon as Robert Shankle mounted the horse, she cried. The ride reminded her of Robert Shankle as a boy.

"I remember the young Bob. The young Bob who would run and get meat at the butcher shop. The young Bob who, when I would listen to (her husband) Bill's music while he was in Vietnam, would say, 'You're thinking about Bill, huh?'"

Robert Shankle took a few slow laps around a ring. Friends cheered him. After about 40 minutes, he figured he was ready for lunch. The horse crew led Indiana Jones to the edge of the ring.

Walter Shankle wanted a picture with his big brother before he dismounted. And at the end of the ride, it didn't really matter why his big brother liked horses so much, Walter Shankle said.

"When he was up there, I just thought, 'At last. He's finally getting to ride one more time.'"

    Works for me!!!!!!
Anyone remember the courtroom scene from the movie, "The Miracle on 34th Street" (original version) where the defense lawyer offers proof that his client is indeed the one & only Santa Claus? And that proof is delivered to the judge by the USPS dragging in bag after bag filled with letters addressed to Santa Claus? That's the scene that is playing in my mind as bags of cards are dragged into NBC!

Laura, there are two things going on: People are making contributions to the New Bolton Center in honor of Dr. R. You can do that online by going to the PennU Vet School website, with a credit card donation. Make sure you fill out the "In honor of" section. Or you can send a check to Rachel or Allie at Kennett Sq. Florist made out to New Bolton Center.

The other thing is a restaurant gift card for Dr. R and his family. Again, KS Florist is coordinating this with Dr. Sweeney. You can send Rachel or Alie a check in the amount you wish. However, it is getting late for mailing something, since the gift will be given to him on 8/25, even though his b'day is 8/30. So at this point, it might be better to do a credit card over the phone with them...

Also, a nice cake (carrot of course) is in the works, and perhaps a good bottle of champagne for Dr. R... This is for 8/25 - his last day before he goes on vacation...

Hope this helps.... Also, there is a folder in the discussion boards on Dr. R's b'day plans with the details...But, so MANY posts!!

As we continue to come together here with in the vision of a healthy Barbaro, we will face difficult issues.

One of the Barbaro effects is that now we are better as a group than when we had our major setback with Barbaro. I know I feel stronger because of all of you!

So let's use these new skills. We know how to be anxious and desparate. But we have experience now in believing and fighting in the face of adversity. Pray, meditate, visualize, write, or sing for Foggy.

Barbaro must be listening a minute or two
To Horse Angels Secretariat and Seattle Slew
It is too soon to join us Secretariat said
Therefore you need now to listen instead.

Continue your healing and being patiently calm
Your positive attitude is the best healing balm
They're are saying you're smart and we have to agree
But what else should we expect with your great pedigree.

We have races in heaven and a whole lot of fun
But it is too soon to join us; your job is not done.
You will see that we all must have our own Triple Crown
Yours might be through your foals or even greater renown.

You have made safety in racing a cause celebre
That might be your achievement at the end of your day
Or there might be another Triple Crown with you son
So even not on a course there're still races to run.

But whatever your job is, your success is confirmed
Because we know you are one of us chimed in Affirmed.
For you see we know that you are one of us and great
Even though your own Triple Crown was stolen by fate.

We'll be watching you closely to see you don't falter
While hearing the prayers offered here at our altar
For there are so many more legends with us up here
With us watching over you, you have nothing to fear.*************************** Constant prayers for our sweet Barbaro and also Lost in the Fog**"God will give His Angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways"

Will Barbaro still come to KY for breeding? What if he needs special care after he heals? Surely the Jacksons won't sell any part of him.

I feel like I know Melissa Harden so well through her wonderful poems and comments. I really enjoyed "Horse Angels Speaking," with the theme being Barbaro was meant to be on this earth for a special purpose. Even without continuing to be a racehorse, he has already contributed to the well being of horse racing, by making so many of us laypeople so aware of the need to improve the safety for these great creatures. Also, my prayers and good wishes for 'Lost in the Fog,", such a young horse --I hope his determination and will to live is like Barbaro's.

Hay everyone - I have to tell you - a couple of weeks ago I sent letters to all the Gyno doctors in Key West about premarin mares, etc. Sent an article with the letters.

I got a response today from a doctor I have never met or seen. He was insulted - he said I was questioning his integrity - said he never answers letters but since I was questioning his integrity he responded. He went on about the study done my premarin mares - its not as bad as we think. He also said that if a patient needs the hormones he will prescribe - he did say he prescribed other than premarin - but premarin was still prescriped. He also said that with what is going on in the world today that maybe I should focus on that instead of the premarin mares. What an ahole! Anyway - I just wanted to share!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 17, 2006 10:42 PM

A doctor with no soul is a good one to stay away from...

If I ever meet him he will get a piece of my mind!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 17, 2006 10:49 PM

Sally, Thanks for that report. After having gone through two major female oriented surgeries I can tell you that Premarin is not very well thought of these days by most doctors, conservative and not so conservative. Years ago I had a doctor prescribe it but now-a-days it is not so popular. Not just because of the mares but also because there was a higher rate of cancers with women on Premarin. There's more to it but I don't need to elaborate.

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at August 17, 2006 10:50 PM

Sally in key west, I like you attitude!! That Dr. is definitely an ahole! I worry about all those foals produced as a result of that plus the poor mares. Sickening!!

Good evening Barbaro, so glad all is well on the homefront. Hope you have some more visitors this evening. Please continue to heal. We are with ya every step of the way. Love ya champ.

Sally, just caught the tail end here and saw your post..I asked my Dr about it the other day and I said give me a good name of something I can refer people to as an alternative to premarin.. he gave me the name of a synthetic one called Estrace??? (sp?) He said it is pure estrogen and all his women have had wonderful results with no horsey.

If anyone has had any experience with this or any other alternative to premarin perhaps a new thread at the forum is in order?? I would be very interested in first hand experiences from our ladies here to see what in their opinion works and what doesn't.

I have not hit that stage of my life yet but when I do, I will seek alternatives if I absolutely must have something. I am trying to get a friend and family member to switch, but its a personal decision and all I can do is help provide some information for them. Just to let them know there is an alternative.

Bonnie - he did mention the side affects of Premarin but said he prescribes it when necessary - he did not put my mind at ease that he prescribes it less - just that he does. I knew the side affects when I started taking it 10 years ago but I did not know where it came from until someone on this board told me - I stopped immediately and have been off the hormones for about a month now. I don't have many hot flashes (my only problem) - once in a while - I can live with it. When I first started taking it I would have killed someone I if wasn't taking the premarin - I'm ok with the few flashes I have.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 17, 2006 10:54 PM

One of the girls in my office mentioned last week that she was going to the pharmacy to pick up her hormones - I asked her what she took and it was prempro = I gave her the artcile I sent to the doctors - she said she did't care - that if she didn't take it she would be homicidal. I asked her to please ask her doctor for something else. She loves horses big time - but she said she was leaving to pick up her horse pee. I tried!!!!

    Hay, Sally KW

"M.D" stands for Medical Diety. Just kidding, but you would thing so by the 'tude of some. Most aren't so self-important. I worked with a great bunch at St John's Hospital in Santa Monica and at UCLA when I was in school and trying to figure out what I wanted to do when I grew up, thinking that I was going to go into medicine myself. (haven't grown up yet) Honest to goodness, there are some who truly believe that they are all that, aren't there. A little sensitivity would go a LOOOOOOOOOOONG way.

I have a question. How does this breeding thing work??

Being totally serious here...Breeding takes place generall in the spring on our side of the equator. Mares are covered by natural means (the whole sexual thing) and no artifical insemination.

Do the owners sell the horse ?

Some horses (quite a number) go into sydnication. A group of people cough up so much money to the original owner for a season (one mare is bred per year to the stallion). But some owners keep owner rights and you pay astronomical amounts of money to have your mare bred to the stallion. Some offer something called "Live Foal Guarantee". All that means is that the foal will get up and nurse. All obligations from the stallion owner at that point end. The foal is now the mare owners responsibility.

I know Giacomo will come here to KY. this spring. I heard someone bought a controlling interest in him. Does that mean he still has the same owners?

Don't know the answer to this one. Someone else want to jump in????

Will Barbaro still come to KY for breeding?

I'm not sure anyone has gotten to that point yet. He may stand at Lael for awhile until their sure that he can handle this whole new world ahead of him without any problems.

What if he needs special care after he heals?

Dancinginmydreams is at a "special" farm in KY. She needs electrostim a couple times a week. And as she draws closer to foaling time they have to up like 4 or 5 times a week. Whatever Bobby's needs are they will be addressed, either by the Jackson's at their farm or by the stud farm where Bobby ends up at. His needs will NOT be ignored.

Surely the Jacksons won't sell any part of him.

They might or they might not. Bobby is there horse. After all of this I think its safe to say his home is secured. But one never knows whats ahead of him.

Does anyone know how this works?

It's obvious you have some concerns for Bobby. That's great that you felt comfy coming here looking for answers.

Breeding is a very complicated business. There are many kinds of ownership.

I would suggest that you ask the question on the forum and Alex will probably respond. He's very good about answering questions over there. Or he will point you to a site that can help answer your questions.

Hi All. I will add Foggy to my prayers along with my continued prayers for Bobby and my own horses as well. Can a miracle happen more than once, I sure hope so. Bobby is living proof of that. I also wanted to say that you are an amazing group of people who genuinely love not only horses but all animals as well. My horses mean the world to me as well as my two cats and five birds. I would do anything I could to keep them alive and comfortable. They are the innocents in life and if we don't stand up for them, who will? I also want to remind people to contact their congressmen and senators to put an end to this horrible slaughtering of horses. I was appalled at a newscast I heard a couple of weeks back where they interviewed a horse owner who basically said, "what's the big deal, horses have no souls" Anyone who believes that about a horse or any other animal for that matter does not deserve to be a part of this society. Anyway thanks for listening.

To my dear sweet Bobby, you keep listening to wonderful Dr. R and you'll be on your way back to the Jacksons in no time. Sleep tight little one. Love Ya

Obviously THIS person has NO SOUL!! Animals have more soul and instinctual love and heart than any other being on the planet! It just goes to show what an ill-informed person this is, and I am being very disciplined and kind in my statements, if you know what I mean!!

    Good Evening, Barbarmaniacs!

I've just finished sending healing energy to Lost in the Fog (I called him Light in the Fog earlier tonight...talk of a Freudian slip...I like that one, however...). It all wound down very gently. It is all in the hands of Spirit right now. Just like this morning, I felt a lot of love and prayer surrounding him to soothe him. What a gift.

Anyway, Rachel at KF worked her magic again...you are the greatest...

Sweet Bobby J, I haven't sung "the lullaby" to you in a while...so here goes:

    So goodnight you moonlight ladies
    Rockabye Sweet Bobby J
Deep Greens and Blues are the colors I choose.
Won't you let me go down in my dreams
    And Rockabye Sweet Bobby J.

I think James Taylor would understand.

anyway, will get on chat soon just to say goodnight. Stove is going like made prepping for Sat.

Sweet Barbaro, you are such an inspiration to us all. Sleep deep, sleep well, and keep on healing so you can graze outside more and more. Will come back on tomorrow morning.

You might pass on the name of the RedWolf sanctuary. You can find it at redwolf.org. Despite the name they do have other wild animals and according to their website have just added several hundred acres. They are located in Indiana. I tried to email directly from the WildAnimal Sanctuary site but it kept hanging me up. I can only contribute a little but if a lot of us do, maybe it will help.

To David Letell: What a wonderful visual and so true to. You gotta believe!!!! I know I do.

To Linnie: It was a report on the slaughter houses and they showed the horrible conditions that the horses are brought to and how they are treated. I was really sickened by it. Then they interviewed various people in the horseracing business. I didn't catch the guys name but I was totally shocked. All I remember is that he was a horse owner. My husband also told me that the horse Ferdinand wound up in a slaughter house too. I can't believe that. The guy from the stable that I'm associated with also told me that at the end of the racing season, the trucks line up outside and the horses that are no longer wanted are brought to them. This is at Monmouth Park. Can you believe that???

One of the partners with my stable is Of Counsel to the Throughbred Retirement Foundation. She has taken in so many of our horses herself and I believe she told me there are something like 1300 waiting for a home. If anybody want's a horse, that's the place to go.

To Shelly A. : Unfortunately I won't be able to make the rally but I will do everything I can on this end to stop this horrible act.

    Hi All --

Sweet vigil for LITF tonight. Good news from Mike Rea for those who visit that site on occasion.. His brain is healing. They say he's ahead of schedule getting back function. They appreciate the postings from TWR and beyond. Remind us of anyone?

Ladies... great input on the Premarin question. Alternatives... there is a simple oil (nut/seed/oil) based 28 day supplement protocol my Naturopath recommends that works for 80% of her patients, and they don't even need bio-identical hormones. 14 days each combo -- seeds ground in a coffee mill and oil capsules. Works great. If anybody is interested in the protocol email me though the link below (hope it works, my first try putting a link up) and of course check it out with a trusted health care provider...

Be well, dear Bobby, Lost in the Fog, and all the great hearts who run for us, may you run safe and fast. Be well each and evey one of the Barbaro Nation! Thanks for another day of updates Alex, you da man.

    Good Evening (again)!

Ohhh, Lost (Light) in the Fog is so beautiful. Barbara Livingston, you are a gifted photographer. Thank you so much for putting that together. Alex, thanks for the link. OMG. It was so comforting to feel all the prayers gathering around him tonight and this morning. It was very similar to the prayers that gathered around Bobby at the Preakness (once I calmed down...).

Bobbie B, not a problem. Understand totally...I wonder if there is a way to acknowledge it and give credit to the original song. Don't know copyright law, but there are many times when song lyrics are changed (in your case, something really sweet, but many times lyrics are parodied with credit given to the original song/songwriters. There's gotta be a loophole somewhere that wouldn't get any lawyers upset...). I just have to find the time to get all this together...its just too wild right now (and its gonna get wilder if all these prospective Reiki clients come thru.).

Becky Fredericks, I have not forgotten you. Am going to send you a copy of my flyer. Hang on.

Bobby J, its probably close to bedtime. Listen to the nurses tonight. Hope you get another massage soon.

This prayer is from an Episcopal "Blessing of the Animals" service...

O God, we thank you for making the animals to brighten our lives. Help us to save them from danger as Noah did. Help us to love them and care for them as St. Francis did. And when we see the animals that you have made, help us to remember that you are holy and worthy of praise. Help us, to treat with compassion all living creatures entrusted to our care, that they may not suffer from our neglect nor become the victims of any cruelty; and grant that in caring for them we may find a deeper understanding of your love for all creation; In the name of the Father (who thought up the giraffe and the zebra) and of the Son (who was named after the beautiful white Lamb) and the Holy Spirit (who came to us as a Dove).

Nancy Perrier, your post re the anti-horse slaughter legislation, while constructive and eloquent, understated the number of slaughtered horses that we're talking about - it's more like over 90,000 than the 10,000 you mentioned. Not that one is not too many - but let's emphasize the sheer volume of the horror when prostletising (sp?). LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH.

LITF is absolutely beautiful! Some of those photos really captured me -- felt like could see his very soul in those eyes of his.
Dear Bobby, in your own thoughts tonight I believe your friend Lost In The Fog would so appreciate your sending a prayer his way. I sense you are very in tune with these things, Bobby, just like with Dr. R.
Candles burning for both you Lost in the Fog and dear Bobby, and always one for all the birds and animals.

(Indeed animals have souls!!! And should you ever encounter a physician without a heart -- keep right on walking and never look back! -- Thank you, did not know about the Premarin!)

    Lost In the Fog -
Strength for the journey, lots of love, and may you feel all the "horse angels" in Heaven surrounding you tonight and tomorrow.

Good Night, Bobby! Love, hugs, "scratchies", and sweet dreams of sunny meadows to come for you. Candles burning for you, too!

    @@@###
To Renee A. - your message to me earlier from the Posse tonight meant the world to me - thank you from my heart. . .
Hugs to all the Posse from me, too! Love you all... well I'm getting emotional here so off to some quiet time to devote to LITF, Bobby, and Mike Rea . . .
    always, Lou Ann, Pennsylvania

Alex, is there anyway for you to check the answer? I would think that if it were to turn out to be a memeber of the Jackson family that owns Barbaro....then maybe that post needs to be on the top for a while.

Posted by: David at August 17, 2006 08:05 PM

DAVID: I don't think that's the case because if you click on "Jackson", it's a live link that takes you directly back to the email address for Argentdesigns site. If it was someone directly from the Jackson family, the link would take you to an email address for them and not for the person who designed the video.

    Hello everyone,

Checking in briefly for Alex's latest update. As always, Alex, thank you for keeping us current on Barbaro.

Barbara Livingston: What extraordinary moments you have captured with Lost in the Fog. Let us hope that our collective thoughts and prayers give strength to his connections, and him.

Shannon: Amazing video, very touching and memorable.

Susan: Excellent poem, you have a way with words!

Lastly, Bubbranch: You bring up a very good point and I've thought the same thing. Great minds think alike! :)

Take care everyone, make it "another comfortable" night".

    Dear Tim and fellow Barbaromaniacs,

We have a medically fragile baby, trach and G-tube dependent. His name his Malcolm. He's almost a year and a half. He was a pound and a half when he was born and is doing pretty well.

He needs tracheal reconstruction and we wanted the best in the world to do it. Dr. Cotton at Cincinnati Children's is the guru (say the Dr. Dean of the pediatric ENT world). We are supposed to be taking an Angel Flight up to Cinci from SE Georgia on Sunday. However, Malcolm has been sick this week and developed perihilar pneumonia. He is back on low amounts of supplemental oxygen.

I'm hoping, praying, crossing my fingers and toes, and jingling my curb chains that he's got the snap, crackle, pop out of his lungs by tomorrow when we go to our local PCP pediatrician for our pre-op physical. No pneumonia means we can probably go.

It takes about 3 months to get an appointment with Dr. Cotton. We've waited so long I can't imagine waiting another 3 months. They don't do these surgeries over the winter because of RSV. So I'm really hoping the power of positive thought can get these lungs clear. We want to get this trach out!

Bobby, give us some of your lung capacity, some alveolar tissue would be nice too!!!!

Thank you, so much. I don't post a lot because I am so busy with Malcolm, work (teaching school), and making sure our six year old son doesn't get lost in the shuffle. However, I check the boards and updates multiple times a day.

    Cheers,
    Jessica

PS - Kenny Mayne is an awesome guy. He wrote a wonderful piece about Cigar and when his babies were in the NICU. Tragically they both passed. He is big supporter of Ronald McDonald House where he and his wife stayed when his babies were in the hospital away from home. He answered my letter so kindly and remembered me when I introduced myself at the airport in Hartford, CT several years later.

Jeannine Edwards, if you see this, would you forward it to Kenny? (Or Tim, if you could forward it to Jeannine?) I think he'll remember the woman who was bothering him during game 7 of the Yankees/Sox playoff series at the Hilton at Bradley! He emailed me back when my first preemie son was still tiny in the NICU in Boston and I lost his address. I have a letter to send him. If you know of a way I could send it to you and you could forward it ... or maybe I should just mail it snail mail to ESPN? We'll be staying at the RMcD House in Cinci if they have room, and I know he's a great supporter of them.

Martita, thank you for your beautiful musings on our friends in need tonight. I just looked at Barbara Livingston's photographs again, and the tears stream down my face. First Barbaro, then Gallant Secret did it to me, and now another beautiful boy. I think Barbara has the touch of wonder and beauty to capture such soul in her photographs - they are so extraordinary. I have one of the framed headshots of Barbaro, and I think I can reach out and touch him.

To get through another 24 hours ...

To all of you with personal concerns at home, I pray you find peace and understanding where you live.

To those in pain and illness, please find the strength to carry on, a day at a time, until this too is resolved.

Nancy in CT - thank you for the beautiful prayer. As always, you add dimension.

To Barbaro and Mike Rea, you are the miracles we extoll and witness daily - your inspired performances are benefiting far more than you imagine.

Bless the beasts and their benefactors and servants. Love to you all, and greatest thanks to Alex, once again...

Jessica Turner, I wish you all the very best with your baby. You sound amazingly strong to be doing all you're doing. I hope you and baby get to see the doc soon and that baby is protected by healing hands and hearts.

I'll be thinking good thoughts for you.

Foggie, tomorrow will be good news. We are gathering around ready to lift you up! The docs will take action and you will be safe.

I just feel it is so.

    Love you both - Terry
