Barbaro Updates: 49

updates are now here.

Update 488: Due to further tests, Lost in the Fog will not return to Golden Gate Field until sunday: Lost in the Fog nears the end. Russell Baze's incredible nine race win streak remains that: Baze's 9-Race Streak Ends at Bay Meadows.

A tribute to Lost in the Fog.

Update 487: Many of you have shown interest in Perfect Drift, also running tomorrow in the Pacific Classic. I just spoke with his exercise rider, Joe Deegan, who was boarding a plane I think when we spoke I think. Joe reports Perfect Drift is training well and is as good as he has ever been right now. He has settled in really well at Del Mar and should be a major factor. As Jeannine also noted, Perfect Drift has made $4.5 million in his career thus far, Joe noted that would be over $5 million if it was not for a couple of head-bob decisions. He was twice second in the Pacific Classic so they are hoping to put that right. He is a gelding, and is a big strong horse. He is a tough horse and you have to be careful around him. Anyway, in sum, Joe reports his is training well and should put in a big effort tomorrow.

The Daily Racing form on the Pacific Classic: Classic has 'tough' written all over it.

Update 486: Jeannine Edwards just e-mailed me about the big race tomorrow (Pacific Classic) and ESPN2s coverage (7 - 8 pm east coast time). The following is an excerpt:

I did see Steve this morning before he got on Giacomo, we had a nice chat. It seems they're all pretty excited about Giacomo's chances tomorrow. I can tell you he looks fantastic! Always been a big, eye-catching horse, but he's really blossomed into a he-man since last year. Nice to hear that all his little problems seem to be behind him. Someone else who looks fantastic is Perfect Drift, what a cool horse he is. He loves travelling, loves seeing different places, and nothing fazes him. He's a handsome brute of guy. You'd never know he's 7. He spends each winter at his owner Dr. Reed's home/farm outside of Kansas City, just turned out, growing a shaggy coat, getting spoiled by Mrs. Reed, and being a horse. Trainer Murray Johnson said Perfect Drift knows he's officially "off duty" when he gets to the farm. If ever a horse deserves credit for running his heart out every single race, it's Perfect Drift. And by the way, he's by Barbaro's sire Dynaformer, and he has the same head and face as Barbaro. Only Perfect Drift's ears are bigger! Perfect Drift will be making his 40th start tomorrow, and he's earned $4.5 million!! It's going to be a great race. We will also have in the show a feature on Giacomo, an interview with his owners (Jerry and Ann Moss), a Lava Man feature and interview with his owners, and a report on poor Lost In The Fog. Incredibly sad. Hard to get a grasp of this ... and I can't even imagine what his owner, trainer, and stable personnel are going through right now. I remember seeing him at Saratoga last year, and playing with him over his webbing. He was a very personable, inquisitive colt who took his owner and trainer on a remarkable journey last year ... 10 straight wins all around the country and an Eclipse Award as the Champion Sprinter. It will be a very sad day when he leaves us.

Jeannine forgot to mention (which she confirmed in a subsequent e-mail) that there will be a Barbaro update during the show tomorrow.

Some of you have pointed out that Sabina has posted a few new pictures of Barbaro!

Update 485: Peter Brette just called, he visited Barbaro at about 1 pm today. All remains well. He gave him a good brush. He pretty much confirmed Bobby had been out grazing everyday since he first started grazing. Peter and Michael will be on grazing duty next week I think.

Kennett Florist visited Fair Hill today, this is their comment (timestamp: 6:12 pm)

Not too much to report from NBC today. All was quiet when we dropped off our goodies this afternoon, but that is normal for a Saturday.

Our prayers and thoughts are with LITF and his family. May he be comfortable in his final time at home with his family.

On a lighter note, Alie, my son Jacob and I had the wonderful duty of delivering a special gift to Alex this morning, from many of the TWR web family. He was absolutely wonderful to talk to and was graciuos enough to let my son meet a couple of the horses (he's 4 and now thanks to Barbaro, a horse fanatic). We took a couple pictures and I will forward them to Alex to do with as he pleases.

Alex, again, thank you for all that you do and for taking the time to meet with us this morning. We hope you enjoy your gifts. CHEERS from all of the thankful family members here on TWR and all of us at Kennett Florist!

PS - Before you all start calling, we don't have any fish on hand for the polar bear!! (but of course you know we'd take care of it if need be!) LOL

WE BELIEVE!!

Rachel

It was fun meeting Alie, Rachel and Jacob. I really get a kick out of seeing how easy it is to entertain people around horses. And of course, all your generosity is amazing, I was pretty overwhelmed, but very thankful! I did decide to regift the basket of goodies, I asked Annie (from Michael Matz) if she would give it to Eduardo, Bobby's groom. She was delighted to do so. I will plan another Whip gathering very soon! Again, thank you, it means a lot.

Update 484: Steve Willard (Giacomo's exercise rider) just called to provide us an update for Giacomo as he prepares for Sunday's Pacific Classic. Everything is a go. He had his last gallop before the big race and will likely tack walk or jog tomorrow morning. Steve noted his training today was similar to the last two days. He jogged back (anti-clockwise) a mile and a quarter. He turned around and galloped a mile and a half. Everything feels fine, he is training forwardly and feels good.

A couple of people have mentioned to Steve that they have been reading these reports, which is pretty cool. I think one of those people was Jeannine Edwards, who is preparing for ESPN2s coverage tomorrow (7 - 8 pm). ESPN2 will also be providing a Barbaro update I think. I will plan to contact Steve and get one more update before the big race tomorrow. A few people have asked why I am covering Giacomo specifically for the Pacific Classic. I chose Giacomo because like Bobby, he's a Derby winner!

Don't forget, we are planning a Barbaro vigil, 7 pm east coast time tonight. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, spare some thoughts for Barbaro.

Update 483: Peter Brette may be visiting Barbaro today. If he does, I will follow up and get a report. I just saw Lisa, Better Talk Now's exercise rider. He is doing well after the Arlington Million. He has be out twice (training) across the fields. He will likely do that for a week. They are considering the Melbourne Cup as an option for him later in the fall. That would be TOO cool!

I created a separate folder on the discussion forums for Lost in the Fog. Here is contact information:

Dr. Richardson is getting ready to operate on a polar bear! The following is an excerpt:

Dr. Dean Richardson will operate on Alcor, the 750-pound polar bear with two badly broken bones just above his right paw, sometime next week at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, where Barbaro is being treated, officials said.

"This doctor is one of the best in the world and they've got a state-of-the-art medical facility," zoo spokesman Scott Mitchell said. "There couldn't be a better scenario, given the circumstances."

Update 482: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (friday night). I saw Michael Matz on my third set, we were behind the gate. The conversation behind the gate quickly turned to Lost in the Fog. Very sad. I want to thank Russell Baze for the time he gave me last night to provide us an interview, and some insight into The Fog. I also learned, after the interview, that not only did Russell ride seven winners yesterday, but he is on a nine race streak!.

The two year old I was riding was gate schooling. It was only his second time. We walked through the gate a couple of times, then walked him in, stood him and closed up the gates. We then opened them up, he walked out, nice and straight. He was very good for a second time visitor to the gate. I did learn this morning about his pedigree (from his owner). I used to gallop his mother, and she is now 21. (Yikes!)

21 years old....yikes is right! Wow, that is incredible!

So sad, can't shake this feeling about LITF :( Only 4 yrs. old with all of this cancer in him, one wonders how the heck this can happen! I'm glad that he is returning home to be with the people who love him, that is where he belongs until his time comes.

Am looking forward to watching the race tomorrow night! Have a good day everyone!

Nice writing on Lost in the Fog, Alex. Presuming he is not gone yet (obviously), there are a few things they can try, and I hope they do! Best wishes, KAWilson

Good morning, Alex. Thanks - as always - for the Barbaro update, and also for the interview with Russell Baze. The news about Fog is just so terribly sad. What a hard-trying horse he is - so honest. They run their hearts out for us, don't they.

Action News just reported that Dr. Richardson will be operating on a polar bear from a zoo in Erie,PA later this week employing a technique similar to that utilized with Barbaro as the bear has multiple fractures.

Not sure how accurate their details were, but interesting nonetheless.

The bear is being sent to New Bolton for his surgery.

What a relief to hear that Bobby is ok.

Alex...it's scary how time flies!

Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

Sweet Bobby, will not be online much today...son is getting married in 6 hours...but I wanted to wish you another wonderful day (a bit cloudy, but that's OK). You are the greatest and I rejoice at your recovery.

LITF, energy is gathering around you for your transition. I love you as well...you are so brave, so big-hearted.

To the board, I submitted "Barbaro's Dream/Champion's Heart" to a site called Guru.com to search for an illustrator. I now have 11 proposals to sift thru...I didn't expect that kind of response...to those who are searching for illustrators, check it out. To submit the manuscript is free.

Re LITF yesterday. I was working on Windy and Stormy and wasn't thinking about the time. All of a sudden, both horses and Tika, Willow's Alaskan husky faced West (I live in PA) and were all still. All 3 animals are white. Time seemed to stop and suddenly I was asking Willow and Sarah what time it was.

It was 12:37 p.m. EDT - 9:37 PDT. If I remember correctly, LITF's procedure was scheduled for 12:30 EDT.

Made the hairs on my arms stand on end. They knew.

On that note, everybody have a wonderful day.

Healing and Peace,
Lyn Gilbert

I am so glad to hear Barbaro had another good night! I kept looking at my own horse's feet and legs yesterday thinking about what Bobby has gone through. He is an amazing horse!

I will be saying lots of prayers tonight at 7:00 for Bobby and LITF.

I have a question, not being a horse person...I just love them alot..

Can anyone say what the length of a thoroughbred the size of Bobby's hoof would be? on average? I keep looking at his feet in racing photos, but can't tell... I read it can grow 1-2" a month..

Thank you God Almighty and St. Jude for this wonderful miracle for Barbaro.

Cool article about Dr Dean...is seems there isn't anything he can't do. Now he is operating on polar bears! Amazing guy!!!

Very happy to hear about ACN for Bobby, but my heart aches for Lost in the Fog and his connections...just tragic.

YIKES . . .you made me laugh Alex. You have a great talent for telling a story and knowing what your fanclub needs to hear.

Glad to know that Bobby continues to do well.

As for Foggy, the good part is that he will have so much attention and pampering in the next few days and give those left behind a chance to tell him how much he is loved and the difference he made in their lives.

Hopefully, it will bring some comfort to all those involved and bring everyone closer. Not the ending anyone wanted, but certainly a courageous one.

Enough said about that.

Good morning Bobby, ACN, those sweet words!!! May you enjoy your day and have a wonderful bath.
Does anyone have the actual address where we can send a real card to Foggy's owner and trainer, asap, for some enotional support for them? Also read the idea of sending some goodies to them. Not sure if poor Fog is eating or not, but a small show of support of some kind would be very nice from us.
Hope everyone has a good Saturday.

Thank God Barbaro, I thank Him for your miracle and that you're getting stronger everyday! You are a miracle. . . but God doesn't run out of miracles! He can still give LITF a miracle. If He wills it, and if we believe. The doctors can't do anything, but sometimes that's when the biggest miracles happen - then without a doubt the world knows it was God only that did it. I never gave up on you Barbaro, and I'm not giving up on LITF -- not yet!

Good morning y'all , hope everyone is okay after hearing the awful news about LITF . I hope his connections are doing well. Pray for them and the Fog. Bless them.

Alex , the interview was great and interesting. I wonder if you realize how much it tells those of us who are not in a line of work with horses. We learn so much from you and your interviews with others whose life's work is with horses.

And ACN from Mr. Wonderful , the champ himself,

My heart goes out to LITF and his family. I wish them peace in the days ahead. I hope that the Fog remains comfortable and with the ones that love him the most. He really must be a special boy.

Good Saturday morning all, and happy 'bath day' to Mr. Barbaro. My 'good' morning greeting is tempered with the sad news of Foggy. I haven't been online since before the diagnosis was made, and just read the sad, sad news now. My heartfelt prayers go out to Foggy and his loved ones. His family is truly compassionate to bring him back home. Such a sad time for them. I will continue to light candles and pray for Foggy.

The poems written for Foggy are truly beautiful! 'The Barbaro Effect' has again manifested itself in the heart and soul of those who composed such beautiful words and thoughts.

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who has ordered bracelets and magnets. I'm just about sold out! Will be placing another order on Monday.

Renee Antaya, Leslie in MN, Deb G., Sharonlynn, Marla, Therese, Susan A, and others who I might have missed (sorry): Thank you for your comments and kudos regarding www.BelieveInBarbaro.com. As I said, this is a labor of love. Barbaro was/is my inspiration: to offer my time, talent and money for a 'higher cause.'

I noticed there is still a little tweaking to do on the web site, so will get on that over the weekend, AFTER I ship all your orders.

Renee, great idea about posting on Upenn's message board! I have an interview with my local newspaper next week. Hopefully it will be picked up on AP.

Now for Mr. Wonderful! So happy that you're happy, lovin' life and continuing to heal! You are always in my prayers... because the fat lady hasn't sang... yet ;)

Alex (and crew), as always Thank You for your continued updates and making them extra interesting along with all the interviews.

I saw a couple of posts earlier of a polar bear operation.

I found the following article:

Barbaro's Doc to Operate on Polar Bear

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/18/AR2006081801448.html

ERIE, Pa. -- The surgeon who has worked to save the life of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro will now try to help a polar bear with a broken leg, Erie Zoo officials said Friday.

Zoo officials do not know how Alcor broke his leg, but they suspect he did it Aug. 11 while playing with his brother Mizar, another 7-year-old bear who has been at the zoo with Alcor since 2001.

The bear's right front radius is shattered while the weight-bearing bone in the leg, the ulna, is snapped in two, officials said. Because the breaks are so close to the paw, veterinarians who examined the bear on Thursday were pessimistic that they could be secured with rods or pins long enough to allow the leg to heal.

But a vet at the Cleveland Zoo put the Erie Zoo officials in touch with members of Richardson's medical team, who believe they can repair the leg.

"This will give him the best possible chance, but it's still a polar bear that weighs 750 pounds," Erie Zoo veterinarian Dr. P.J. Polumbo said. "Post-operatively, we're not sure what's going to happen. There's still a lot of hurdles to overcome."

Barbaro suffered life-threatening injuries when he broke three bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the Preakness in May. The horse is recovering from surgery as well as laminitis in his left rear hoof.

*******
We already knew Dr. Richardson is the best int he world!!

Thankful for yet another good night for our Barbaro, my mood is tempered by the sadness for LTF and pray his trainer and owners can get through this heartbreaking time. Hopefully, they can look back and celebrate the beauty and championship status of this horse even in the short span of 4 years. Unfortunately, expert medical care cannot save every human or animal. We can only hope those that leave us are in a heaven where there is peace and love surrounding them. Meanwhile, let us continue to give our good wishes and prayers to Barbaro for recovery.

Good morning Alex, Barbaromaniacs and Bobby!

So happy for ACN!!

I spent part of yesterday at Saratoga and was positively euphoric until I got home and read about LITF. It made me think about a squirrel that now is just "roadkill" near my house vs. an article in the paper about kids who rescued some orphan baby squirrels. Why fate works the way it does is beyond me.

I will continue to pray for Foggy and his connections that another miracle can happen. NOT to diminish ANY thoughts for our Bobby, as we can't take anything for granted. God, bring healing to both...

On a happier note--if anyone is ever near Saratoga and has the chance to go, don't miss it. One of the most heavenly places on earth. I've been going there since 1962 (missed some years). I wore my "Believe in Miracles, Believe in Barbaro" Tshirt (thanks Ernie :) and got some looks (I'm sure it was the shirt and not my physique ;), but when the towel lady in the restroom said she liked the shirt and "oh, it's so sad about him breaking his leg," I told her that he was doing very well now and we know he will make it!

The Jacksons had a gelding named Polished Arrow in the 5th, 5 l/2 furlongs on the turf, and trained by Barclay Tagg. He finished a hard-fought 3rd, by a nose, in an exciting finish. I didn't see the Jacksons as I assume they are not there for every race their horses run ;) But in the 6th, Barclay had a gelding he co-owns named Stratonic who also finished third. I know he's supposed to be a quiet guy, but he was sure chatty leaving the paddock as he talked to his companions ;)

And Edgar had a smashing win with a first-time starter named Starcastic in a maiden race also at 5 l/2 furlongs. He had been working at Delaware Park. Won by daylight and very popular with the crowd. The race replay showed Edgar was hand-riding like poetry in motion.

I got there so late I had to park in the free areas across the street and about a 10-min. walk away. But it was in the stable area! Walking back, I got to see horses being fed and cooled out and one groom held a beauty for me to photograph. He belonged to Dale Romans' barn. I wonder who he was?

And now Dr. R is operating on a polar bear! Well, I know of a used sling he might be able to use ;)

Sorry for the length of this. I don't post often, and then (like Barclay) I get chatty ;)

Love to all. Is there a vigil at 7 tonight for Bobby or LITF?

Good morning all

Though I do not post comments much to this board, I do read your comments everyday. When I heard the news about Lost in the Fog, I immediately came to this site because I knew that there would be an outpouring of compassion here.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Foggy and his connections. I'm so glad they are sending him home to be with people who love him. Thank you to those who posted the address of Golden Gate Fields - I will be sending my best wishes to Mr. Gilchrist, et al. And I'll be wearing my LITF hat to the racetrack today (usually I wear my Barbaro hat!).

Such wonderful news about our Sweet Bobby. He is in my thoughts constantly and I am so grateful for the progress he has made. Thanks to Dr. R, the NBC staff, Alex (this site is wonderful), Tim, the Jacksons and Matzes, and Edgar P.

And to all the handicappers and sports writers who criticize horses like LITF or Giacomo when they lose a race -- all I can say that these animals give their all, they run their hearts out for us, no matter what. Afleet Alex probably won the Belmont with an injury he sustained in the Preakness. Bobby is dealing with his condition with the utmost dignity. And dear Foggy has probably been racing for the past four months with a grapefruit sized tumor in his spleen (and elsewhere). They are all such beautiful and brave creatures. People should take a lesson from them.

Love and thanks to you all.

Good morning to all!

Thank you Alex for the interview with Russell Baze. Fog is going back home today where he should be and I think the best thing for all of us here is to try and focus our collective thought and project a stream of warmth and peacefulness their way to give them strength.

Alex, if you talk to Steve Willard today ( Giacomo ) could you please ask him his thoughts on the Del Mar track surface. Thank you. I pray for safety for everyone tomorrow.

I am so thankful that Bobby had another comfortable night. He is truly a GIFT and we are very fortunate to have him. Bless him.

I was so pleased again to hear that Bobby had a good night. My prayers continue for you big boy and just keep doing the things that Dr. Dean and his staff tell you to do. Cooper sends plenty of get well Woofs and I as always my luv, hugs, and scratchies. Enjoy your time outside, and eat grass and feel the sun on your back.

To the owners and everyone associated with Foggy, please ensure that his last days here are pain free. Stay with him until the end and know that he will be welcomed at the gates of heaven where he will be able to run and roam free of pain.

Precious Bobby, thank you for the sunshine you are giving me. ACN is music to my ears. Enjoy your day big guy and I'll talk to you later. Bath today? I love you. Such a busy boy you are!

Alex, thanks for the update. Must feel really good riding the son of one of your horses. Brings back many memories I am sure. Enjoy.

Sweet Foggy, morning to you, hope you are feeling okay. I'll be with you in thought thoughout the day. I love you.

Susan W...hello to you good friend. Saw your post early this morning but too emotional drained to respond. So, you gonna write in the Bobby book I have created? Email me, seems your email doesn't work.

Good day to all.

Prayer vigil tonight....are we including Foggy in this one, or doing one just for Bobby? Anyone know?

Quick note - just read that Dr. Dean is going to operate on Alcor the polar bear from the Erie Zoo. That makes me so happy that he now at least has a chance! The Pittsburgh news said yesterday morning that thet were going to have to euthanize him so this is huge! They are now an endagered species!

Posted by: chris byers at August 19, 2006 1:45 PM

This was posted last week by and I thought it was a good time for a repeat. My friend who lost a horse last week found it very comforting.

DON'T CRY FOR THE HORSES

Don't cry for the horses,
that life has set free,
A million white horses,
forever to be.

Don't cry for the horses,
Now in God's Hands,
As they dance and they prance
To a Heavenly Band.

They were ours as a gift,
But never to keep.
As they close their eyes,
forever to sleep.

Their spirits unbound,
On silver wings they fly.
A million white horses
against the blue sky.

Look up into Heaven,
you'll see them above.
The horses we lost,
the horses we loved.

Manes and tails flowing
they gallop thru time,
They were never yours
they were never mine.

Don't cry for the horses,
they will be back someday.
When our time has come,
they will show us the way.

Do you hear that soft nicker,
Close to your ear?
Don't cry for the horses,
Love the ones that are here.

Guys,

My heart is breaking over the news about the Fog. I can't hardly bear it. Does it sound like I'm a "fair weather fan" when I say that I am seriously considering taking a break from the site for the next several days to ease my broken heart? I feel like this is a weak reaction, but I am so upset over hearing this that I don't know what else to do to cope. It's like knowing you're going to turn the corner and see a devastating train wreck, so you avoid that route so as to not to see. I know sticking my head in the sand is cowardly, but given that nothing can be done for him, I just don't know if I can continue hearing about his last days, and then the news when he is gone for good. I feel so weak.

Barbaro Team:) My son is getting married today so I probably won't be able to get back online until tomorrow. May you have a wonderful day filled with health, peace and love. God Bless you and yours.

Sheila I know the feeling. I can't even look at Barbara's album cause it just is too heart wrenching at this time.

I know how much this hurts seeing such a young, beautiful boy having to leave us so soon. I have not stopped crying since yesterday. I pray to never be put in the position of having to say goodbye to one of my animals.

Be strong, remember 5 weeks ago when the news on Bobby was so grim. I was afraid to come onto this site at that time, afraid that I would read something I didn't want to accept. We all have lived through this then at a different level, and our bond got stronger and we helped each other out. Our positive thoughts are amazing.

We are helpless in Foggy's fate. But we need to be strong and help each other through it, we are all so devastated.

Susan C...almost gone already!! Better re-order quick girl.

Ashley...love your dream...must have been so hard to cut those carrots into little pills LOL. Thanks for sharing I needed that laugh.

Does anyone have a comprehensive website for several pics of Lost in the Fog? (I only find scattered places on the net...)

And,
is there an email address to which we can send condolences for LITF and his family?

Alex, thanks so much for the continued work...you know, yesterday I was 25, and now I'm 38! How did that happen? And why did I used to think 40 was old?

Best wishes to Barbaro and family...spirits up!

ACN ! Great news for sweet Star Face Bobby.

Bobby, you are getting a new roommate. Make sure Doc Dean gives you all the details about the polar bear and that you pass them on to Alex. We will all be rooting for the bear.

Alex, thank you for the interviews with Fog's connections. I hope Fog's last days are filled with joy, celebration, and peace for him, and for his connections. This is a lovely time of year to be home in the Bay Area.

I did a little reading of some archive articles from the San Francisco Gate. Fog is very, very big there. Hundreds of people turn out and cheer him when he merely sets foot on a track for a routine jog. He has had such a remarkable career and has been an incredible influence on the sport in his short life. I can only hope that his situation can lead to new ways to detect cancer early in animals and deal with it.

Jeanette and Lyn: good luck and have fun today, Moms in Law!

Shelley A, one of your babies is racing today? Good luck and safe racing !

Gilchrist was asked if Lost in the Fog, a winner of 11 of 14 races and $978,099, would be paraded around the Golden Gate Fields track a final time for the fans, who have been calling UC Davis, Gilchrist and the track in support of the horse.

"I don't think so," he said. "The horse has lost a little weight. I would want him looking as good as he ever did when he was racing. We've been kicking around a couple of ideas if people want to come see him.

If anyone gets any information about visiting him, if you could email me at athletics005@gmail.com, it would be much appreciated as I only live 25mins from GGF and would love to see him one last time.

Thanks for the interview, and I can tell you for a fact, LITF has an amazing trio in his connections. Aleo, Baze and Gilchrist are as nice as they come, and truly are class act.

I am so sadden by the news of Fog. My eyes are leaking…..again. It will be difficult to hear when his time comes. My heart goes out to his owners and others that have come to love this wonderful horse. It is just so sad.

ACN Our Bobby is truly a miracle boy. His life and story has touched each of us in profound ways. He has called us to stand up and be better people at what ever we set our hands and hearts to do. I am blessed each day to read his condition improves if only a little bit. On the days we hear he has had a great week or been out side grazed, I am giddy with glee. Truly I am so thankful to be part of so many prayers and positive thoughts that have been heard and answered by our loving God.

I am a children’s advocate and need to get a final report out this weekend. I would sure appreciate any prayers you might send in my direction. Animals, children they all need us grown ups to step up to the plate and do the right things for them.

abs had a great post..

I go to the track ALOT..and I HEAR the idiots all the time, tehy bet on a horse and only 1 can win, theres only 1 exacta etc...alot of people dont win.
BUT.
When I HEAR someone say "he's a dog", or "shoot him" , "drop dead"...or even worse, the complete non-caring attitude when a horse pulls up hurt or worse. Thats when I HATE THE TRACK. Because of the idiots that don't realize the animals run their hearts out ALL THE TIME. They dont take a day off from work like most of can and do. They are born to run and when they have the chance they do- TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY.

They can't say my back hurts, my leg hurts or I dont feel good, THEY TRY ALL THE TIME. They all can't be super all the time, even Secretariat lost, so when I hear the fools gripe, It drives me nuts.

I heard a guy critisizing Lost In The Fog when he lost his last race at Calder, I wonder how he feels now?????

The racetrack is a very cold place sometimes because people have to realize, horses don't run for you to cash a ticket, they run cause they love to and they're bred to....

Good Morning Barbaro Nation

Sheila I don't think you are acting cowardly. We all have different ways of coping with sadness.
When the news came yesterday, about half of the people posting quietly left.

Some of us questioned the messenger and others expressed their grief. Do what you need to comfort your heart. I am sad too. I am trying to practice what I preach and find the lesson in all this. Very hard to do. Remember that Foggy is surrounded by love and care.

Hola Barbaro, bath day Champ, enjoy and keep healing.

I hear that a POLAR BEAR is coming to see you next week...let him know you're THE MAN there, but keep your distance because just like you, he is a force to be reckoned with! Mike C

What you say is very true. But most of the people at the track ARE just there to cash a ticket and not for the love of the horses.

When one of my horses is running, I have to shut my ears to the talk around me cause I'm liable to smack someone!

As soon as they're horse doesn't win, they say horrible things about the horses and the jockeys. The jockeys have learned to block it out.
It's rude and ignorant. I think if some of them heard themselves later, they would be shocked at what comes out of their mouths.

I am ever so thankful that BobbyJ is doing well.

maybe someday I can have a horse of my own again.

Posted by: mish ~ future vet tech at August 19, 2006 3:21 PM

Like mike c, I get really hot with people who criticize horses (or other animals) for not winning, or not doing something the human thinks they should. We all know stories of horses that lost a race, and it was later found they had an injury, or were sick...it's not the horse's fault.

I've seen this attitude in horse shows, where people don't want to believe the animal was doing the best it could...some people will blame anything rather than look at their own behavior when things don't go perfectly.

Which is not to say that some horses aren't...sly, let's say. Most of them are dead honest, but some aren't, and I've owned a couple of tricksters. (You have to admire them, for the cleverness at least, but...)

I admire LTF's "family" for making the most humane decision they could, and bringing him home to a place he knows and feels comfortable in. And I hope his fans understand the equally humane reason for not making him walk around the track so they can see him. He needs familiar routine, familiar people, and no excitement at this point.

When I first got a puppy, as a child, my mother explained to me that if you own animals, you are then responsible for them throughout their lives, and that might mean some very painful decisions. And--in the course of sixty years and a lot of animals--she was right.

Good Morning All: Would like to mention a few things. Hope no one gets upset with me. I've been reading about The Fog's devastating diagnosis. Lily posted the following link, which was very informative. Thank you Lily. It told me what I wanted to know about the "time frame".

http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?Date=20060818&Category=SPORTS08&ArtNo=60818045&SectionCat=SPORTS&Template=printart

What concerns me is that from a lot of the posts I read from yesterday (didn't see them all yet; so hard to catch-up), it appears that most posters, except the post from Jeanette Cavalier (Thank you, Jeanette), are giving up on a "miracle" for LITF.

I would like to respectfully request that no one give up. I know it looks hopeless, but that's exactly the "picture" that "evil" (or whatever you wish to call it), would WANT us to BELIEVE!
The more you believe and internalize the "facts" as presented, which are "true" in the human experience, the more these "facts" will evolve and paint exactly the picture you hold in your thought.

REFUSE TO ACCEPT THE "PICTURE". There is "time" for things to reverse themselves -- as bleak as it looks -- there is "time". There's a vigil this evening for Bobby. Whatever time you're planning on spending in prayer, etc. for Bobby, don't change that. But if you still have time in your schedule, after you've focused on Bobby, maybe most of you will then turn your prayerful thought to The Fog. But don't hold the picture in your thought that corresponds to what you've read about his condition. Reverse that. AFFIRM HEALTH AND HEALING for him! Don't be taken in by the MATERIAL PICTURE.

Thank God that his owner and trainer are bringing him home. They're resigned to doing what is right and good for the horse. But I'm sure they're praying for a miracle too.

Remember, pray WITHOUT DOUBTING OR FEARING that healing is taking place.

Most of the posters (although your posts are beautiful), are practically burying the horse already! I know you're sad; I know you're devasted. It is shocking news, similar to that which we rec'd from Dr. R a few weeks ago. And I said the same thing then, don't "throw in the towel"; don't give up. At that point, if everyone remembers, Dr. R. wasn't sure if Bobby would make even make it the next 48 hours! The Fog can make it too. I do understand the apparent "difficulty" to see beyond this particular claim of the big TC. It is a claim that is strongly entrenced in human thought that the outcome has to be a certain way. But in God's Universe -- which is TRULY where we all live -- The Fog's "condition" is non-existent. We must AFFIRM the TRUTH of that.

I beg of you, do not "throw in the towel" on The Fog. Many posters already see him crossing the "Rainbow Bridge" and being met by his "Grand daddy", etc.

I know you mean well, it gives you peace of mind to think of those things. BUT THE FOG IS STILL HERE AMONG US! FIGHTING, LIVING, (he's fairly comfortable too). Please don't write him off with your thoughts, because that's exactly what you'll see manifest. Instead, ELEVATE your thoughts for him, just as you did for Bobby when the news looked bad. People are too quick to accept what appears to be the "verdict" for The Fog.

The article link referred to above indicates that The Fog's vet, Dr. Smith, I believe, says that he could have as long as A MONTH! I don't know about you folks, but I'm grateful that we still have time to pray and affirm that God's Healing Power is OPERATING -- RIGHT NOW. Just because we didn't see the diagnosis we were expecting, does not mean that the situation cannot be reversed...healed.

You can correct this picture and see The Fog as God's perfect child.

Nine yrs. ago my then 3-yr. old puppy was given a "death sentence" by my vet. Evil's "claim" was "Parvo" (even though he had been vaccinated against that.) I was in tears, at first, until I "snapped out it" and realized what I needed to do. One of the thoughts I used while affirming the Truth for my puppy was from spiritual material written by Mary Baker Eddy, which said, in part:

The Christ brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies. It acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores carious bones to soundness. The effect is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind.

This statement is very powerful. To make it EVEN MORE EFFECTIVE, be SPECIFIC, put The Fog's name in the first sentence, e.g., "The Christ (or The Christ Healing Power) brings to THE FOG'S BODY the sunlight of Truth, which...".

My puppy's LIFE THREATENING condition began to rerverse itself within 24 hrs. And within 48 hrs. he was so improved, my vet told me to come get him. All the vet asked me to do was to take note of his first bowel movement, and if that looked normal, then he would be "out of the woods". It was normal. He's now 12 yrs. old.

I wish we could all stop our lives, which I was able to do for my puppy, and spend 24 hrs. a day praying for The Fog. Most of us cannot do that, so we can only devote whatever time we can to this healing. When my puppy was stricken, I turned off the television and radio; did not return phone calls unless absolutely necessary. Hardly ate or slept. I kept up a nonstop "vigil" for my dog. I had to. It was a matter of Life and Death.

The Fog is only 4 yrs. old. His vet said this is "rare". Let us not accept this awful picture. Let us not "bury" him, or envision
him "crossing over" when he's still here fighting for his life. Those thoughts
do nothing to help him; but they do everything to harm him, because they affirm the OPPOSITE of what we want to see.

Again, I hope no one takes offense at my plea, but just like for Bobby, I'm pleading for SUPPORTIVE THOUGHT TO SEE A REVERSAL OF THIS FOR THE FOG. Will anyone join me in this? Can we spend time after Bobby's vigil this evening, for The Fog?

If at all possible for most of you, a DAILY VIGIL FOR THE FOG, at whatever time you can, and for whatever amount of time you can, pray and affirm God's healing of him.

Please do not envision him on any bridge, except that which leads to LIFE, HEALTH, AND HARMONY.

I hope no one minds me being FIRM right now, but this is, after all, The Fog's very life. For those of you who are not Christian, perhaps you believe in affirmations, meditations, etc. I just want to direct thought away from that which is already "writing him off".

"For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." --Christ Jesus.

Good Morning Alex and everyone!

Thank you Alex for your updates today. I'll visit the discussion board later and keep tuned for news on Lost In The Fog.

Your two-year-old sounds special. So his dam was 19 when she foaled? Awesome! Your descriptions of your mornings are something that I have become accustomed to really look forward to every day.

I can't wait to hear about Doc Dean's surgery on the polar bear. Wow..wouldn't we all like to be there. What a magnificent animal is the polar bear.

And of course, as always, thanks for the news about our sweet Barbaro. I'm so happy to hear of ACN, and see each day that passes as another over step over the blocks in the path to recovery. Can't every say "thanks" enough to the Doc Dean and the staff at NBC, Bobby's own docs, his mom and dad (someone pointed out yesterday all the "SONS" who are involved in his care :)) to Michael, Edgar, everyone there with you at TWR, to all the wonderful people at Kennett and to this amazing family you have fostered here.

Thanks Alex! You are the BEST

Tracie,
It's actually my sister who is just back from Iraq. She graduated West Point. Very relieved to have her home. Thank you for the kind words.

God Bless Lost In The Fog, Barbaro, and any other horses in need.

I keep remembering a book I read over and over as a little girl, "All Horses Go To Heaven". Surely this must be true.

Also this quote comes to mind,
“If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans” ~ James Herriot

This can also explain those cash oriented folks at the track.

Just reread my post and had the thought that maybe all horses (animals we have near) ARE heaven. Little pieces of heaven right by our sides.

Counting my blessings.

Thanks again to Alex. I feel I am learning so much about racing (both it's heart and procedures).

Tracie,
no need for apologies. The thought was lovely and taken as such. I'll hug my fella and my sis anyway!

Loretta, I understand where you are coming from. Believe me, I do and I want with all my heart for LITF to have a miracle -which is why I'm bathing him in light for as long as he needs/wants it.

But I have a question for you:

What if - just if - it is LITF's will and God's will that he transition? I'm not saying it is...I'm asking you "what if"? What if there is a higher purpose to this beautiful animal that we just don't know yet? Please don't jump down my throat, but sometimes we don't know what God's will or a beings' purpose is...we may never know.

That is why I am leaving all of LITF's saga in his and God's hands. I can't dictate the outcome - I just see him as a shining spirit. I have not given up by any means. If he chooses to stay, I want him to have the best life possible. If he chooses to transition, his spirit will be so free. Either way, he will not be alone - ever. No matter if a miracle manifests or he chooses to transition, he will be so beautiful.

Just my two cents.

Healing and Peace,
Lyn Gilbert

Faye, I just noticed your post. HALLELUJAH! I'm so glad that neither you nor Jeanette Cavalier is giving up on The Fog!

(I hadn't seen your post when I wrote my long "plea" above.) Didn't Jesus say, "Where two or more are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them"? I hope tens of THOUSANDS will come together to affirm God's Healing Power for The Fog! Thank you!

Loretta - thanks for your post. You are right - lets all of us get out of our funk over Foggy and start praying for healing energy. Bobby was a miracle why not Foggy. Lets pray tonight for our Bobby and for Foggy's healing!!!!

I know everyone was very saddened by the news about Foggy. Please take the long discussions to the new special board created just for this. It was very difficult for us to read all the sad posts last nite. Let's try and have a more upbeat day on this board for Barbaro's sake. I know I will post on the new board for Foggy.

Good Morning fellow Bobbyheads...:)

ACN for "our" beautiful boy. The most beautiful words in the English language. Enjoy the sun and the grass (((Bobby))).

Dr. Dean is operating on a Polar Bear??? Good Grief the man is a "Miracle Worker". Just how they are going to handle the bears recovery is beyond me. A borse is one thing but a bear???? A POLAR bear??? It boggles the mind. I just hope they keep him far away from "our" boy. I wouldn't want (((Bobby))) to get worried. ;)

********

My thoughts are with (((The Fog))) and his family this am. Life can be so unfair. :(

Good afternoon,

So happy to read continued positive reports on Barbaro. And prayers for healing and comfort are going out to Lost in the Fog and all involved with him.

Dr. R operating on a polar bear? Amazing...polar bears are my favorite critters (other than dogs, cats and now, horses). I'll be praying for the big white one, too. If there's any chance, he'll have it with Dr. R's care and our prayers.

I just read MIKE C'S post. I feel the same way. I have even heard some people on TVG make comments about horses not are not very flattering. I like TVG but I have watched it alot and have heard those kind of comments. I remember reading a letter to one of the racing publications that said there are no cheap horses only cheap people. I hate to hear a horse called cheap!

Thank you God for Bobby's right and perfect healing, and for his complete recovery. Thank you God for his ease of mobility and the joy in his heart. Thank you God as miracle follows miracle, and wonders never cease.

Magnificent Steed! Well done. Another day closer.

The LIGHT of God surrounds you
The Love of God enfolds you
The POWER of God Protects you
The Presence of God watches over you

Hi Alex,

You have done so much for everyone interested in Barbaro. Would it be possible to add a link on the left hand side for Lost in the Fog?

Thank you

Team Barbaro!

I love that Dr. R is going to work on a polar bear...I swear this man is going to re-write a lot of veterinary knowledge...that is so cool...

sorry I missed about the board for LITF...but I've said my piece.

ACN - Sweet B, you are cheering me up before I leave for Sam's wedding...I swear, you can bring a smile to my face very quickly. The clouds are dissipating and its another warm muggy day here in Chester County.

I've received 14 bids to illustrate "Barbaro's Dream". There are 3 I want to talk with since they say they have followed Barbaro's saga from day 1. This is getting interesting. Once that is done, I will contact the Jackson's, Michael Matz, NBC and Gallant Secret's connections. Nothing goes forward until I'm sure they're all OK with this. But I want to see a vision for my words if nothing else.

Jeanette C., have fun at your son's wedding. I'm gonna have fun at Sam's...just hope I don't cry too much.

have a great day everybody.

ALEX - thanks for putting The Fog's address where people won't miss it - I've already had three emails this morning from people wanting to know how to get in touch...I have to think that The Fog's human family will be touched to see how many of the Barbaromaniacs, in the midst of our own cautious celebration, are grieving with them and take the time to send a note.
You're the best...and speaking of family, do you realize what an enormous "family" you have now?

Jo - Shelley did say that Ima is lazy - I guess she raced for a while and then decided she was tired and didn't want to race anymore. She'd probably be better in a shorter race!

Thanks for creating a separate folder in TWF for Lost in the Fog. It's clear that everyone is really devastasted, including me, but I'm really concerned with keeping the positive vibes here for Bobby. It doesn't mean that we're not keeping The Fog and his family in our thoughts.

SALLY - is Ima lazy or just smart? Knew a former police horse here named Henry - don't know his racing name...he was a little bit of a guy who raced with modest success until in the middle of a race he stopped short - no medical problems at all...he just seemed to decide, "I'm outta here, no more racing." I always thought he was a smart guy...and boy, was he feisty for a little one!

Lyn Gilbert, I understand your question and your comments. And Thank You so much for NOT GIVING UP on LITF!

However, in order to fully answer you and do justice to your question, I would have to launch into copious theological/spiritual information and beliefs. The people on this board would kill me. I'd probably be hung by my toenails!Too bad we can't talk on the phone.

Right now, though, in order for me (or anyone) to correctly affirm and focus SOLELY on healing for LITF, and for Bobby, to even SLIGHTLY entertain the "What Ifs" is extremely dangerous when one is actively engaged in affirming the Truth of God's Universe and His Healing Power.

The reason is, that when we "entertain" the "What Ifs", especially the ones we DON'T WANT TO SEE MANIFEST in the human/equine experience, the act of even slightly considering a possible opposite or adverse situation, means that "doubt" or "fear" ALREADY exists in thought, that would have one think that it's in the realm of possibility that the outcome of health and harmony might not occur. That's why I posted the quote from Jesus about "removing" the "mountain".

Jesus was very clear about not considering the opposite outcome, b/c that, in and of itself, indicates that doubt and fear are present. Even when everyone around Lazarus was weeping, Jesus referred to Lazarus as "sleeping", he thanked God for already hearing his prayers, and promptly raised Lazarus from the dead! Jesus didn't think to himself, "What if God has a better plan for Lazarus, and maybe it's time for Lazarus to transition." I'm not making fun of your thoughts, Lyn; I wouldn't do that. I'm just using your words in that make-believe statement of Jesus' to illustrate that prayer/affirmations, as I understand, in order to effect healing, are BASED ON Jesus' teachings and his own method. If Jesus thought that God wanted Lazarus to stay "dead", or "transition", he would not have reversed the "picture" of "death". He referred to him as "sleeping" b/c Jesus knew that it was an erroneous "picture" presented to the human sense. Jesus was able to direct his thought AWAY FROM that "picture" and to "see" Lazarus as being "alive".

Whenever anyone approached Jesus for healing, he never considered the opposite. He knew that health and harmony are the Truth of God's creation, and he was so skilled in his grasp of spiritual Truth, that he was able to heal instantaneously. He said we could do this too. As I mentioned pages ago, it's not that we CAN'T heal; it's that we THINK that we can't. If Jesus thought that God might have had better plans for these people, he wouldn't have gone around healing them. But he knew that death, disease, injury, etc. were no part of God's Perfect Creation. And he DEMONSTRATED that by showing HEALING as the Truth of Being.

"Transitioning", as you (and all of us) understand, is really only what takes place before our human eyes...our human "sense" of how things are. This material universe might just exist ONLY in our human PERCEPTION of it. I'm probably saying too much already here. I don't want to get too deep b/c people will blast me off the board, but Jesus was able to raise Lazarus from the "dead", b/c he understood so clearly that there is no such thing as "death" in God's Universe. "Death" is what we perceive with our limited spiritual understanding.

That's why it's SO important not to entertain the opposite of what we want to see manifest, i.e., the "What Ifs", because we could actually "create" the manifestation of that which we do NOT want to see. Again, we're dealing here with human sense and perception. Jesus "saw" past all that, straight through to God's Perfection. The woman in the Bible with an "issue of blood" for, I think, 12 yrs. She touched the "hem of his garment" and was healed instantly. He turned to her and said, "Your FAITH has healed you". Her belief was so strong that Jesus could heal her, that her healing was manifest. She did not consider the "What Ifs"; had she done that...had she approached Jesus with any doubt or fear, consciously or subconsciously, she might not have gotten the healing that she did. Jesus knew that she healed herself with the power of her FAITH that she'd be healed.

I hope I haven't confused anyone. Let us not even slightly consider the opposite of what we want to see for Bobby or LITF.

That's why when things were so critical for Bobby, and everyone was so scared, I jumped on here with similar statements, to try to calm our thought, because I know that it can mean the difference between Life and Death. People did calm down, the vigils started, and Bobby is improving by leaps and bounds, where previously no one knew if he'd make it through the night.

But Bobby is not out of the woods, so we must continue to hold his Perfect Being in thought.

The same holds true for LITF. This is a tremendous "Mountain" for him, and for us. To consider any other alternative for him but Life, Health, and Harmony, would be not to do him justice. Jesus held to the Truth of God's Perfection. Can we do less?

I hope, in some small way, Lyn, I answered a little more fully. I never intend to "jump down anyone's throat"; I just get "firm", so to speak, when we're given knowledge of a particularly critical situation. In these times, we must act quickly to reverse the "picture" that human thought perceives. I know that The Fog is surrounded by his family who love him. I just hope they're praying for a "miracle" too, b/c the thought closest to him is extremely important. He will "feel" their thought. So perhaps we can pray and affirm that they will be strong in their belief of God's healing power, which will support our thought in that direction too.

I am one of the ones who posted about Foggy crossing rainbow bridge with his great grand daddy on the other side.

I have nothing but positive energy as far as Foggy is concerned and if we can work the magic on him that we are working on Bobby, then all is good.

Difference here, Loretta, is that Foggy's family will be taking him from us in 7 to 10 days. I will keep my positive energy and my candles lit for Foggy.

Sorry Alex I will post any more about Foggy in your forum.

FOR LORETTA!

POWERFUL! INCREDIBLE!! MAGNIFICENT! BRILLIANT! INSPIRATIONAL!!

I was one of those who had just resigned myself to 'acceptance' about Fog's condition, but ... I just REVERSED myself after reading your brilliant 'Sermon', and I say that with utmost respect and admiration.

I had forgotten what I had learned in the past several years, but you just brought it all back to me in the few minutes it took to read your post which I excerpted just a portion of here!! I WILL say that 'prayer' that you posted above each and every night for Fog from now UNTIL HE HIS MIRACULOUSLY HEALED! This is a TEST of our Faith and Commitment to God that HE HAS AND WILL CREATE ANOTHER MIRACLE FOR FOG. BUT FIRST WE MUST BELIEVE IT AND THEN WE WILL SEE IT!

THANK YOU, LORETTA, FOR BRINGING ME BACK TO THE PLACE I NEEDED TO BE ... YOUR WRITINGS ARE A GIFT.

Loretta,
Please take your knowledge and information to a more suitable forum that was specifically created by Alex for Foggy. If you need help connecting with this forum, I would be happy to oblige. There were some that thought this board was too chatty when we were live before. That is why Alex created the Forum.
Thanking you in advance.

Re: Ima wild. she is a sweet horse, and can run (she showed that last year) but she gets in these mindsets at times where she will run well but for some reason (maybe another horse "looked" at her wrong, she doesn't like the track, or she will just decided, I have had enough of this racing, where is my hay?? She is a funny, sweet horse otherwise.. (from talks wth Shelley A)

Mary (Boxcar's 2nd "mom") and to the others too!! Someday I plan on meeting Shelley and her great stable of horses. I like the "little" guys in racing..

Mary L - I love Boxcar - he is just the cutest horse - like I have said many times I love the light colored horses - except - for Bobby - he is just beautiful!!!

Just noticed that there's a new board for Foggy; Thanks all for mentioning it. I didn't know about it during my long reply to a poster. Sorry. Thanks!

Posted by: Loretta at August 19, 2006 5:30 PM

I love Shelley's posts and insights. For her sake I wish Ima would have left others in the dust.

However, I love seeing animals assert their different personalities.

The image of Ima and Henry deciding: not today, provides me with some much needed levity.....sorry Shelly. I'm still rooting for Boxcar!!!

Please let us know if I'ma Wild One is OK.

I finally got to see the video of Barbaro walking out in the sun and eating grass. He looked very healthy and strong. I love Barbaro so much and am so happy that he is doing well. I will pray along with everyone else at 7:00 tonight for Barbaro's healing. I love you, Barbaro!

LINNIE, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I see we're being directed to a new board for The Fog, so hope we can all keep up with each other on both boards. It certainly is a good idea that Alex has allowed for Fog's board, but it's difficult catching up with all the posts.

Hi all: I am so sick over Fog. I've been talking to my partners about it and we are all devastated.

Thank god I ordered my bracelet and magnet yesterday. I wanted to give the website to my partners, are there any more left?

Hi my sweet Bobby, you be a good boy for everyone. Have a great day and another comfy night. Love ya

Like you, I wasn't aware that we can discuss Foggy someplace else, so I will 'mosey on over there' in a little while to catch up and share uplifting affirmations! But right now I'm watching the Yankees/Red Sox Game and I am a diehard member of the BLUE team on ALL fronts!!

But hope I see you 'there' later !!!

Sharonlynn, Thanks for your post. I recognize the "difference" you referred to. But my thinking is this: It's altogether possible that LITF's family will change their minds, based on his progress.

Lorraine S. Try not to be sad or devastated. There's a new Forum for Foggy. If you can, scroll through these recent posts here and you'll see that we're trying to unite everyone in a spirit of AFFIRMING HEALING for The Fog. Take a look at some of the positive posts.

I had a hard time falling asleep last night...I'm so sad about Lost in the Fog. (I love how he got his name!) I'll continue to pray for him, Harry Aleo, Greg Gilchrist, Russell Baze, and all of his connections. Such heartbreak.

Bobby, I hope you have a great Saturday. It's bath day, right? Enjoy both your bath and the fresh air and sunshine. I'm so grateful you are doing well. Fog's situation really emphasizes how truly fortunate we are to have you. Stay strong and healthy beautiful boy. Lots of hugs, kisses and nuzzlies to you sweetie.

There will be miracles...

Cassie, I see that now. I had been answering a question about LITF that was posted to me on this board. Plus, when I got on here today, I saw lots and lots of comments about him, so I just joined in too; maybe the Forum hadn't been created yet. Thanks.

Thanks Loretta for being hopeful and positive! You have made me feel better about LITF. The website mentioned in Pat g's post at 4:58 (contra costa times) is interesting. It states LITF could live up to a year...thats alot of time for a miracle to occur, I'm going to keep praying for just that!

As a gentle reminder, lets try not to get so distracted with the Fogs situation that we stray from our assignment of keeping Bobby's healing on track. We need all of our energies and prayers directed for his continued success. Bobby is counting on us! As it was said several days ago...we are his net work.

GOOD AFTERNOON, DEAREST ANNOINTED ONE!!

So happy to read that you've had ACN, but I already 'knew' that you would. God is taking care of all of it and I don't doubt His works and miracles!! And you are most definitely one of His Greatest Miracles!!

So, dear Boy, today is "Bath Day". I always loved "Splish Splash" by Bobby Darin, and now I have an even greater renewed interest in that song! Just remember these lyrics, Bobby, with a few 'minor' changes to protect the 'guilty':

SPLISH SPLASH ... BOBBY-STYLE!!

Splish splish, I was takin' a bath
Long about THIS Saturday night
A rub-a-dub, just relaxin' in the tub
KNOWIN' everything was alright
Well, I stepped out the tub, put my HOOVES on the floor
I wrapped the TOGA around me and I
Opened the door, and then I
Splish, splash... I'M FINISHED WITH THIS BATH!!
Well how was I to know there was a party going on?

They was a-splishin' and a'splashin'
Reelin' with the feelin', movin' and a'groovin'
Rockin' and a'rollin', yeah

Bing bang, I saw the whole gang
Dancin' IN THE FLOOR OF MY STALL, yeah!
Flip flop, they was doin' the bop
THE BOBBYHEADS WERE ALL HAVING A BALL!
THERE WAS TIM AND ALEX, DR. R AND KATHY A
AND KENNETT FLORIST TOTIN' MY OWN VERY SPECIAL HAY
A- well-a, splish splash,
I AM FINISHED WITH THIS BATH!!
I went and put my STRUTTIN' DUDS ON!!

I was a GRAZIN' IT'S AMAZIN',
RUNNIN' with the LOVIN',
Movin' and a groovin', splishin' and a splashin', yeah!

Yes, I was a-splishin'' and a splashin'...
I was a-GRAZIN' IT'S AMAZIN'...

Yeah, I was a-movin' and a-groovin'
We was a-RUNNIN' WITH THE LOVIN'
I WAS a-GRAZIN', IT'S AMAZIN' ...
Movin' with the groovin' splish splash, yeah!

Bobby Darin and Bobby Jackson ... WHAT A DAILY DOUBLE!!!

Afternoon Team Barbaro!!

SHEILA, have a great weekend and we'll see you when you're back.

Bobby, you're probably right in the middle of your bath right now! The hummingbirds have been coming back and forth to my back porch all morning, and one of them comes right up to the window and stares at me to see what I'll do. He is very brave and curious--like you!

Like you, the hummingbirds have 18 gears--all fast.

It makes me so happy to know you're getting outside amongst the grass and trees and flowers and sun these days.

Damn it about Lost in the Fog. It's hard to take a loss when I'm praying as equally hard for him as I am for Barbaro. Go be with God boy. This isn't good-bye it's I'll see you later. I'll miss you.

Thanks for all the updates.

Good morning, Bobby, light-o-my-life!

It's Saturday, so I hope there is a laid back vibe going on in the ICU....you just reeeelax.

I guess the more you graze, the farther they have to walk you, huh? Sounds like a plan.

Whoever is in charge of this planet just never stops throwing down new gauntlets. Our buddy Fog is having a tough go, Bobby, so think fondly of him. I wonder if you guys were ever at the same track together?

If Dr. Richardson smells a little fishy this week, he may have been feeding Alcor some frozen fish-pops. Don't fret Bobby, you are still the apple of Dr. Dean's eye. He just can't feel the same about a patient that could eat him as he does about you! He can't speak it, but YOU are his favorite.

Today is bath day? Enjoy. The day will come when you can quickly fake out your grazing handler, and drop down and roll on the ground for a nice grassy back scratch! Ooof!

You be good now, give that growing hoof a little stimulation, and then plenty of rest.

You are so loved!

Isn't Boxcar the cutest horsie. I told my Smarty Jones story a long time ago I'll tell you now - years ago when I was a pothead - everybody got names - someone wearing a toupee we would call Toupie Jones, someone really stoned was called Flapper Napper Jones, and it went on and on. It was very funny. So when Smarty was running the Derby and I heart his name - I knew he was the horse for me. So Smarty Jones is always in my heart!!!

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes to I'ma Wild One. Today's race was not a surprise. Jose Flores said she didn't even try.

She is fine. She's sound and has the ability but just doesn't want to do this anymore.
When a 6 yr old mare decides they don't want to race, there is very little you can do to change that.

Sadly, I will be looking into options for her retirement this week and will keep you all posted. I think she'll make a good mama.
I only want the best for her and, obviously, this is not what she wants to do. I've learned that you have to "listen" to what a horse is telling you.

There is a short race (6 furlongs) next Sunday that I MAY run her in just while I'm making the plans.

Thanks to you all for your concern and well wishes.

HI SHELLEYA ...

I'm just so glad to know that she's all right and she just made her own decision and that was it!!

I firmly believe that animals tell us what they want and don't want and it's up to us to 'heed' their requests. I think your choice to run her one more time is a good one, and if she gives you the same 'answer' again, well then you know that 'she's done' with this racing gig! LOL

Everybody, please remember the prayer vigil tonight at 7 pm. Here are some things to remember:

Dr. Richardson said two factors needed for Bobby to be out of the woods are:

1. An acceptably strong structure to his left hind foot (grow hoof grow)(heal L heal)

2. Complete integrity, comfort and strength in his right hind leg (fuse pastern & fetlock fuse)

Bobby also needs prayer specifically to:

3. Protect his two front feet and right hind foot from L now and always

4. Protect him from any infections.

5. Heal the L in his left hind foot and keep it away forever

Also:

6. Pray for Dr. Richardson

Thank you Jesus for bringing Barbaro back to us. I pray for your continued miracle of complete and perfect healing. All for Your Glory and Worship.

Thank you, God for another comfortable night for our dear Barbaro. Please continue to watch over him, his family, caregivers and all of his friends here.

Note to Mish, future vet and bless you for that:

I was in Lexington last year, and I was SO happy there. So much to see! If you can, contact Claiborne Farm in Paris so you can see Monarchos and company and pay your respects to the late, great, Secretariat (as well as many others) if you choose. The tour that I took there last year was unbelievable and I will never forget it. Our groom was so kind and informative. So much so, I'm going back again in two weeks, and it's a long way from California! I also have reservations at Three Chimneys and a couple of other farms as well. While in Paris, if you're there at lunch time, grab a bite to eat at Louie's. A merchant in Paris told me to lunch there last year after my tour of Claiborne and said "You'll like it--all the horse people go there". And he was right-wonderful atmosphere and a place that I felt very welcome. Kentucky Horse Park is wonderful too, of course. What an amazing place. If you go to Nicholasville, you can see the historic marker on part of the Ramsey Farm that notes the location of the old Almahurst Farm, where Exterminator foaled. That was quite an emotional stop for me, since "Old Bones, the Wonder Horse" was one of my favorite books when I was a child. Sanborn Chase Farm is also in Nicholasville, so you could drive by and see where our dear Barbaro foaled. Barbaro's dam is La Ville Rouge is at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington. I don't think you could see her though, since the farms all offer stallion shows. But still..it might be nice to be at the farm where our sweet Bobby's mama lives. I plan at least to go and look at it while I'm there. =)

I hope this helps! Have a great trip! Please tell us about it when you return!

I will be attending Barbaro's vigil today at 4:00 pm, Pacific Time.

Have a nice day, Team Barbaro.

Just an observation and comment about tomorrow's Pacific Classic ...

I know that there is a lot of strong sentiment here for Giacomo to win this race, and I understand his 'brotherhood' connection to Bobby as being as past Derby winner.

However, for me, personally, the stronger connection is Perfect Drift because he is Bobby's 'natural' brother, both having been sired by Dynaformer which I recently learned. So, I am going to root for Perfect Drift tomorrow unless some of my fellow Bobbyheads can offer a compelling case to root, instead, for Giacomo. For some reason, I just don't see that strong of a connection to Bobby other than G won the Derby last year. I know that's a very special club, but isn't it even more 'special' to be a natural blood brother to our Bobby? Just asking ...

Posted by: Linnie at August 19, 2006 6:46 PM

My dear Barbaro,

I just got through giving all my horses their baths. The whole time I was thinking of you having yours today.

Several years ago, one of our boys was in a serious trailer accident. Both of his back legs were bandaged to up above the hock. Giving him a bath was a real challenge. It took several garbage bags and two rolls of duck tape! It sounds similar to your situation. Be sure to thank all the folks at New Bolton for all they are doing for you!

It took Two YEARS to get our Tuffy back. So, my dear fellow, as the Carpenter song goes, “We’ve Only Just Begun.” Be patient. It will come to you.

We will be praying for you at the vigil this evening.

God bless you and ALL of our Barbaro Nation!

Posted by: Leslie in MN at August 19, 2006 6:54 PM

Loretta:

I know, I know you mean well. But I think the truth is most of us here don't see things the way you do. It is true that Bobby did survive even when Dr R thought the end was near.

But for me the two are not the same. And if you'll forgive me for getting on my soapbox I'll explain why.

The night of that dreaded conference was awful. I think most of us regulars can attest to that awful feeling we had. Slowly we had people coming in and telling us about life after "L". That their was hope. Even the Jackson's thought the end was near. See the update for last Sun I believe where Alex put Jeannine Edwards entry.

Dr R laid it on the line that day. He pulled no punches. For which I'm glad. If it had gone bad I would have had a heads up.

But he said they hadn't given up yet. Bobby was still eating, making poop (I love getting to use that word here!), his eyes were clear and his vital signs were stabilizing. Things weren't great but Bobby didn't give up. And that's why Team Barbaro didn't give up. That's why we didn't give up. It was hard. Their have been many fights here, many tears shed, friendships have been made, people are looking at making tracks safer, and bringing to light the horse slaughter issue.

Good things have happened along with the sad.

Which sadly now brings me to Lost in the Fog. Now I admit I've never seen him race. And I live right across one of the many bridges here from him in the Bay Area. Kinda a shame really.

Loretta it isn't the same. Bobby had a chance. True it was a long shot. LITF has INOPERABLE cancer. It's along his spine. It's in his spleen--and while he can live without his spleen what would you have them do about the tumor on his spine?

People here are heartbroken. Unless someone like Dr R steps in suddenly (and I mean today) and says he can do lifesaving surgery all our prayers are just wasted.

We want to pray for him to have the best possible last few days. To be comforted with those he loves and who love him the most. I don't want that horse to suffer.

I'm glad that you have faith enough to move mountains but this isn't the place to teach people about God. I think the most appropriate place for that is over at the forum. That way people who want to listen, support you and have you support them--you will have your own folder where no one is offended on either side of the fence.

For me, I'm not offended at you. But it is hard listening to you say it isn't over because...

Loretta the best vets this side of the Rockies looked at that horse. UC Davis is one of the best vet schools in the country. In fact one of their vets attended to Bobby at the track when he broke down.

So my vigil will be for Bobby. That he continues to progress. That he does get to go home. That he continues to go outside and graze. That his hoof grows and re-attaches itself to the laminae. That his right hind fuses.

And I will also pray for LITF. That he does stay comfy these last days. That his human family is comforted both by his presence and the knowledge that they are doing the right thing. And that whoever is there to welcome him home does so knowing that our hearts are broken and so many tears will be shed that we'll probably have to name a new ocean.

Hi Fellow Maniacs,

Will all of you with new poems please email me a copy so I can put them on my site. I used to just cut and paste from here; but, something in the background is messing up the background on my site and trying to retype every poem is just too time consuming and exhausting.

I would like to get all of the poems and writings on the "For the Love of Barbaro" site ASAP, so please help. My email address is javaellybob@charter.net

Also, I have tweaked the ending to my video "Barbaro Celebrating Grazing in the Grass" that you will probably like even more. Unfortunately, Daily Motion changed the link, the new link is: http://www.dailymotion.com/javaellybob/video/xb2ja_barbaro-celebrating-grazing-in-the

He could live up to a year but with a very poor quality of life. He would be in pain and he would suffer. To keep him alive waiting for a miracle is not only inhumane but it is selfish.

He has terminal cancer. He is going to die.
He is a wonderful, beautiful horse that we will aways remember. Those that love him are doing the right thing for him. Let him go in peace, dignity and surrounded by love. We should all be able to go that way.

Linnie - if he is related to Bobby I'm in for Perfect Drift - like that name too. I will root that all the horses race well and safely!!!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 19, 2006 06:52 PM

HAY, SALLY!!!

Yes, for absolute certain Perfect Drift is Bobby's blood brother. Here are a couple of excerpts with information on the 'linkage' of Dynaformer, Bobby, Perfect Drift, etc. Very interesting 'stuff'

"...Dynaformer is known for producing runners who excel on the turf and can go the distance. Their endurance has endeared Dynaformer to breeders.

Before Barbaro, two sons of Dynaformer raced in the Derby, and both finished third: Blumin Affair in 1994, and one of Churchill Downs' favorite handicap horses, Perfect Drift, in 2002."

And this:

"...Dynaformer, who himself raced 30 times and scored seven victories, has passed along soundness and adaptability to his runners. Best known as a turf sire through the likes of Film Maker, Riskaverse and Ocean Silk, he has also produced top dirt runners Dynever and Perfect Drift as well as Barbaro."

And, finally ...

"...This is a very durable line by today's standards. Dynaformer himself ran 30 times and was retired sound. Barbaro's brothers and sisters, for instance, are still on the track at 6 and 7. Film Maker. Sand Spring, Dynever. Perfect Drift.

(And yeah PD was nipped at the wire in his last outing in a thrilling photo finish but he has career winnings of $2M and at 7 is on course to become the 1st horse to compete in three Breeders Cup Classics.)"

SOOOOOO, as they say ... "Game, set and match" for me ... I am rooting ALL THE WAY for Bobby's older brother tomorrow in the PC ... no doubt at all where my heart will be!!

Michael's Miracle

Margaret

Posted by: Margaret at August 19, 2006 7:28 PM

Margaret, My recent posts indicated that I did not know about the Forum when I posted my original post, as well as the answer to someone's question. Some others here did not know about the Forum yet either. Since then I have posted on one of the threads.

I wish you'd read my post again, though, and some of the others' posts who also want to rely on God for healing.

I never said that LITF's problem and Bobby's were the same; but GOD is the same. And what I meant to convey was that MIRACLES and HEALING are certainly possible, even when things look the worst. Maybe you don't believe that.

I also did not say that I, personally, could "move mountains"; as I've said many times before, God is the Master Healer, but we have the privilege of being able to bear witness to His healings. Our prayers and affirmations of what is TRUE in God's Universe, enable us to see and bear witness to that TRUTH. It is is Jesus' quote about being able to "move mountains", that teaches us all HOW to "move" those "mountains". That is HIS teaching; not mine.

I'm aware that LITF was seen by the best vets, etc. I wasn't addressing any of that, if you'll be willing to read my posts again. I'm simply saying...and there are those here who agree...that "With God, all things are possible."
And Jesus taught us that so clearly.

You're looking at the human "picture" through your human "sense" of things, and basing your statements on what is known "humanly". I'm not. I'm turning away from the "material" "facts" as presented, and turning to God, as Jesus taught, in humble acknowledgement of what He is doing.

As always, I know that not all people will be able to look beyond the material "facts" that you mention, which we've all read about. But for those among us, who are willing to put forth the effort in prayer, to affirm the Truth of Being, and to "see" LITF's Perfection, as God created him, just as we did and are doing for Bobby, then a negative, depressing standpoint, such as yours, is unacceptable to us. Jesus didn't teach us to fall apart at the material "picture", but to RISE ABOVE THAT "PICTURE" TO SEE GOD'S PERFECTION. That's all we're doing.

I respectfully request that you would read the account on the Forum about a poster's horse being healed of C without any medication. There are several threads about The Fog; this one has the word "Recovery" in the thread's title.

Posted by: Loretta at August 19, 2006 7:30 PM

Is it possible for each of us to have and keep their own beliefs without spewing them all over this board, and/or trying to convince others to move in their direction? It is OK, in fact, I would think recommended that we think differntly. I would never dream of trying to convince someone how to pray, how to think, to accept or not accept death - and I don't understand why this is acceptable behavior on this board. I realize most of the posts are a response rather than their own separate action, so maybe if we don't respond, it might stop?? Could we at least try that? Energy does follow thought/action - and this negativity seems to happen each time we have a vigil, and I for one am damn tired of it. Have you ever noticed those "witnessing" for God are sometimes the worst example of what God really is?? Can we please focus on Bobby for our vigil - and trust me - however you choose to do that, in a positive light for Bobby, will be OK with Bobby, and with GOD!!

Note to Mish & other thoughts

Mish, When you visit Lexington, if you want to go by Bobby's birthplace, and where I think he spent his first year, it's on US 68, or Harrodsburg Road as it's called locally. Sanborn Chase is on the right coming from Lexington. It's beside (right of) the Bluegrass Vet Clinic and has a tall wooden fence surrounding the house. Just look for the vet clinic, which is a white building that sits off the road just a bit. Ramsey's farm is on past Sanborn, and it's on the left side of the road. You would know when you came upon it, but may not know Sanborne unless you can locate the vet clinic. Also to note is that Showing Up, Bobby's "Jackson brother", was foaled in Wilmore KY, which is about five miles from Nicholasville ( both being in Jessamine County). Being a native Jessamine Countian, I think it's super that both the Jackson boys were born here.

Some may not be familiar with Dynaformers, Bobby's dad. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Dynaformer, but he's reported to be quite a handful, as in meaner than a snake. He's took off a groom's finger before. The Three Chimneys folks won't let anyone (visitor) near Dynaformer's paddock. But his babies sure can run, and Bobby got his fighting spirit manifest in a kinder way in regards to personality, but I'm sure the Dynaformer "fire" has sustained Bobby as he fights for his life.

I am so late that I can't read all you've responded but have printed the replies.

Thanks sooo much. Often I get no answers when I post and am very happy that this time was different.

To Margaret, I don't think it is fair to say that any prayer is "wasted" but I certainly see your point. Wishing a painfree existence for as long as that may be and the love and comfort of his friends is my prayer for LITF as it is for all.

Miss you all for the next 2 days.

Thanks again!

As Alex has said try to ignore those that are choosing to abuse the board, in this case, to stroke their own ego and impose their rigid religious belief system on others in long winded sermons.

It's one thing to have a spiritual/religious center within ourselves and another thing to think others should do it our way. That never works, it just turns people off.

Yes, this board is about Barbaro, track safety and other positive racing-related issues. Using the whole Barbaro story as a vehicle to expound on personal beliefs is pretty transparent, however, if there isn't a responsive audience it may help. So, I won't respond anymore - except to say "get a life!"

Posted by: mish ~ future vet tech at August 19, 2006 8:01 PM

I think it was Mike C.,Shelly A., and others who mentioned this earlier on the board today. It's a real shame when people at the track don't appreciate the whole sport and the individual efforts involved, win or lose. Without horses (and jockeys, trainers, owners, et al) of all different levels going out every day, there wouldn't even be an industry or races to bet on if you so choose.

I just posted a poem on the forum, under Barbaro poems/videos, in honor of all those racehorses who keep on trying. It's called...More Than an "Also Ran." I think it is in keeping with our respect and concern for Barbaro. Maybe it can even encourage more thought about rescue/rehabilitation groups of your choice, as well as a continued fight for the anti-slaughter bill.

And for the Pacific Classic tomorrow, go! Perfect Drift (another great older horse I saw win last year), and Giacomo too! Safe trips to all.

Warm thoughts and positive vibes still going out to Barbaro and Lost in the Fog and all connections. May you each have a comforting day today in your varied circumstances.

Gee, ShelleyA, Why such negative words on this board? It is only your opinion that he would have a poor quality of life for the next year. The horse's owners have the final decision as to what they will do...just as the Jacksons had a few weeks ago. When sickness turns to health, quality of life improves. You are projecting what you assume to be a future situation for his life, rather than believing that God is in control.

Nothing but good can be accomplished with Prayer. If you read the articles, the horse is fairly comfortable; there is no reason NOT to pray. I'm sorry you have posted such depressing words here. Why didn't you post that on the Forum?

Would like to stay positive here.

To Lyn at 12:36 pm, your session with the animals in their higher consciousness also gave me goosebumps... I have no doubt.

and mike c.: You are so right, and your comments were so passionate! That dichotomy of loving to watch horses run and doing it in an environment with people concerned only about their pocketbook has always been a problem, especially when considering oneself an animal activist. I spoke with a greyhound (show dog, not racing dog) breeder last weekend, and she said show people are not breeding greyhounds in any significant amount anymore, because there are so many who need rescuing and there is such a greater public awareness. There are fewer greyhound race tracks, now, too...

Regardless, these beauties will run their hearts out for you (except, maybe, Shelley A's girl, Ima, who may be tooooo smart for this - I can just see her saying, "I don't wanna be a dumb jock anymore"). I could just see Anna's cartoon now...

Still believing in That Miracle.

Shelly-RE DYNAFORMER

Believe it or not, I've seen Dynaformer breed once. He's a big guy too, 17 hands. When he was led to the breeding barn, he stopped at the entrance and stood up on his back legs and let out an "Oh Boy!!!" yell. Quite a site seeing his reared up. Anyway, he was very nice to his date, got the job done quickly, and walked away like a gentleman.

Sally in Key West, You're absolutely right! People should go over to the Forum to discuss the other stuff. I went over there a little while ago, then I came back here and see that the comments have changed from very positive this morning to very negative this afternoon.

Whatever I posted earlier had been very well received. I was so happy to see that several people wanted to support healing for you-know-who, and not "throw in the towel". We were all so positive.

I, for one, think people should believe whatever they want. I just want to stay positive for these two horses! And if anything I say inspires people to not give up on healing, then GREAT!

No need for offensive comments or criticisms of any of us here who are praying for healing. I thought all that was past.

Please people, scroll through the posts to see the names of those (not just me) who are not giving up on a certain horse.

And there's really no reason anyone should be interested in wasting their time posting about me. Put your thoughts on healing for the horses! Thanks!

Posted by: Loretta at August 19, 2006 8:41 PM

Shelly in CA and Lyn,

I agree something amazing is occurring on planet earth where a higher awareness is growing about animals, wild animals and domesticated. Here where I live there are numerous animal rescue groups, bird watching groups, agility classes for dogs, dog parks. I work with a group called "Humboldt Wildlife Care Center". We respond to calls about injured wild animals, birds, small mammals. It is very rewarding and gives me understanding about life in the wild for these animals, it's not an easy existence. They deserve our stewardship.

Thanks to all you caring people who protect the beasts!

There isn't much out there on Bobby's mom, La Ville Rouge. There are photos on TWR's homepage, along with Bobby's little brother. Wikipedia removed her entry. Pedigree Online has her breeding and racing record and a photo. She is "smallish", absolutely gorgeous, comes of good stock, and passes along her beauty and speed to her foals. The names of the polar bear that Dr. Richardson will operate on (Alcor) and that bear's brother (Mizar) are both names of stars in the constellation Ursa Major (The Great Bear). Many stars have Arabic names be because they were early astronomers. It's kind of cosmic that Alcor means "BLACK HORSE" in Arabic! I hope that portends well for the bear.

The two stars Alcor and Mizar are located in the handle of the Big Dipper.

This site from the University of Illinois talks about the meaning of the name Alcor:

http://www.astro.uiuc.edu/~kaler/sow/alcor.html

"ALCOR (80 Ursae Majoris). Alcor, forever tied to Mizar, is hardly ever spoken of unless as "Mizar and Alcor," a naked eye double in the tail of Ursa Major that the Arabs referred to as the horse and rider. The name Alcor, however, was stolen from that for Alioth. Both come from an Arabic word that means the "black horse." The term was distorted in different ways as it was applied to each of the two stars. Oddly, the "rider" of the pair is the one with the name of the "horse," "Mizar" referring not to a horse but to the "groin" of the Great Bear."
----------------------------------------------
This site shows the Big Dipper and the double stars Alcor and Mizar in the handle. If you put your cursor over the photograph, the names of the stars will be displayed:

http://www.astropix.com/HTML/C_SPRING/BIGDIP.HTM

It's truly amazing and cosmic that Dr. Richardson's bear has a horse connection!

I'll be thinking of you, Barbaro, and wishing you the best at 5 p.m. Mountain Time.

Thank you, Alex, for being such a gracious host to both your real and virtual guests, and making everyone feel welcome. I suspect it is NOT just the horses... and thank you for your generosity toward Eduardo.

I would vote for you to be benevolent dictator, if you chose, provided you would insure the passage of the anti-slaughter and safety at race tracks bills... Democracy isn't doing all that much for us lately.

You could represent the "Horse Hands Across America Party, Yes!" - The HHAAPY candidate!

That was so thoughtful of you, Alex. Some of us expressed the hope that Eduardo has been able to see Bobby, for both their sakes. Perhaps Eduardo can be pressed into grazing escort service..? Seems like a natural to me...

I asked a question earlier today...Do you know how many inches long a hoof is in a horse Bobby's size? I'd like to know what we're up against here. I've been looking at his racing photos and have little idea.. Id take a stab at 4-5 inches...???

(Have not read ANY comments today or yesterday - been in that oblivion that follows completing not one but two time-sensitive major projects with almost no real sleep for a period of many days. What I am posting is unaffected by anything anyone else may have said.)

Hello everyone - I've been "absent" almost 2 days, checked updates but that's about it. Finally today, found out the bottom line on Lost In The Fog. Much as Barbaro has me perpetually Kvelling Mit Nachas, the news about The Fog has me back in tears. (As I've said before, this site is fodder for manic-depression!) At least they know what's what, so these last days for The Fog can be fit for the royalty that he is. Back in the stall he calls home, surrounded by those who love him, people able to pay last visits -- so sad but wonderful at the same time. OY. Life. (Am I pontificating again? Tough!)

THE BARBARO EFFECT is illustrated once more. How many of us would never have known about The Fog if not for this site and interest generated by the Saga of Barbaro?

Aside from the tangible benefits to Horsedom from the raising of public consciousness about the Horse Slaughter and Track Safety situations, and rescue organizations that need help -- what The Barbaro Effect has done like nothing else could:

It has put NAMES AND FACES upon these wonderful horses and their connections, that many people would not otherwise have known. Once they have NAMES AND FACES they cannot be ignored. (Am I pontificating again? Tough!. )

We (many) would not have known about Gallant Secret, or Horatio Nelson, or Miraculous Miss. Our lives and the collective good are immeasurably enhanced.

Thanks to Alex and all for spreading the news.

I can't stop crying.

HOPE PEACE LOVE & MUSIC will get us through.

Alex, thank you for the update and thank Peter. We will be send extra special loving thoughts to Barbaro this evening and to Lost in the Fog and his loving family.

** Please everyone** take Alex's warnings to heart. Please don't make him become our babysitter and have to monitor what we say. He has enough to do and we should show him our gratitude and show Barbaro our love and support by getting along with each. Please don't ruin this wonderful place we can come together and share our thoughts with each other.

***ALEX** DO YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW IF EDUARDO HAS VISITED HIS SPECIAL BARBARO LATELY? I WAS SO TOUCHED WHEN YOUR FRIEND INTERVIEWED EDUARDO AND TOLD US HOW SHY HE WAS AND HOW MUCH HE MISSED HIS PRECIOUS BARBARO. I THINK HE SAID HE HAD A PLATE ON HIS TRUCK THAT SAID BARBARO. MAYBE, HE, ALONG WITH MICHAEL AND PETER CAN TAKE BOBBY OUT TO GRAZE.

I am so glad Michael and Peter will be able to take Barbaro out. I think it will be good for them and for Barbaro. Do you think the Jacksons
will take Barbaro to Lael when he leaves NBC?

Posted by: beverly at August 19, 2006 9:54 PM

Poor Alex...once again you have to step in. As if you aren't busy enough you have to take time away from yourself to keep this classroom calm.

I have seen for a least the past 4 days, there were no attacks on anyone except for Alex post yesterday informing us of the bad Foggy news. But, that was understandable cause there are people copying other's posts and causing havoc and the news he was delivering was so awful.

In less than 1 and a half hours, we are to unite and send all our positive prayers to Bobby and at least for me, Foggy. Neither can benefit if we are not united. We are a family here with nothing but good intentions, so let's not dirty that up and let's have a very successful prayer vigil.

Linnie...Splish Splash is just too cute and came at the perfect time for us all. I think next time Dr. Dean will be so fishy they will be Splishin and a Splashing together.

Shelley...so glad your girl had a sound day. Maybe she lost her heart after what happened to Bobby. So happy she is ok. Maybe she just wants to be a Mom. Greatest reward.

I'll feel you guys at 7 p.m. as we unite. Boy, we just have such a beautiful positive group and it sure does envelope our boy/boys.

Sally,

Not a stupid question! Like Alex always says, there are NO stupid questions.

I'm just learning myself. I don't have the facilites and am not a breeder. But I don't want to sell her. I heard there are some that will lease a horse as a broodmare. That would be the perfect scenerio for me. I have a call into someone about this.

These are tough decisions to make on my own. And, it doesn't help that I'm very emotional about all this!

Mary S. Why can you not read all the positive posts to the suggestion that we not give up on LITF by praying for healing for him, rather than always referring to my requests for prayer as "negative". You do not need to join with those of us who wish to focus prayer in that way. You do not need to join in the vigil for LITF, to take place after Bobby's vigil, if you don't wish to.

I certainly do not try to convince anyone to do things my way. I post my thoughts...just as others feel moved to post theirs. I do not criticize others' thoughts. My post was very respectful regarding not giving up on LITF, and I gave my reasons why. These thoughts lifted some people up. But you always have to make a critical comment about anything I post. Why is that?

Those of us who were expressing our thoughts along the lines of healing, were positive and joyful, knowing that we still have "time" to work towards a glorious result. No one who truly read my words today could ever describe them as "negative".

The "behavior" that is "not acceptable" on the board, is that which criticizes others' thoughts and brings people down. That is what creates negativity...not the expressions of love and concern for a horse we wish to see heal.

You said if "we don't respond, maybe it will stop". So why did you respond? You always do, and it's always negative. Please, Mary S, post your critical, negative comments somewhere else. Do not describe one's expressions of love for God and healing as "negative". That's ludicrous.

And please don't judge me or anyone else here who "witnesses" for God, as being the "worst example of God there is". No one on this board today has said anything so unkind. It is uncalled for. You are not in a position to "judge righteously", which is what Jesus asked of us. In fact, you're not in a position to judge at all, those of us whom you do not even know.

Most of us are trying so hard to remain positive on this board. Your post had nothing positive in it.

Yes, it is a vigil night. So please respect that, and post your future criticisms somewhere else. And let those of us who wish to express and affirm health and healing for Bobby and others, do so without being criticized. Thank You.

Team Barbaro!

Whew! I leave for a few hours to celebrate the kids' wedding and come back to a load of great posts. Wedding was great - nice and simple. My breaking point came when I looked at Sam's hand and saw the wedding ring. But we all had a great time. Even my ex-husband and his wife and I were chattering like old friends...forgiveness is a great thing. After vigil, I'm gonna put on an anime feature that Sam and I would watch and cry my heart out.

Loretta, thank you for your insights. I'm not going to say more either here or on the LITF forum. I need to focus on Bobby, LITF, Coeur Vive (Avi - who is releasing some deep anger...gotta have a little discussion with him to tell him he's safe now.), Stormy and Windy. I'd get into doctrinal debate and that is gonna waste the time I need to work with the horses. Alex would have my head and he's been too kind to put him thru this. So I'm gonna focus. Period. I apologize to the board - had I known about the forum, I would have posted there (I was scrolling up from the bottom instead of down from the top...).

Alex, hope you enjoyed your goodies and you are so generous to share with Eduardo. I looked into his eyes last Saturday and I saw everything there - nearly had me in tears. He's (another) good soul.

Interesting insights into Giacomo and Perfect Drift. I'm not a betting person, but it would be hard for me to figure out which will win.

ShelleyA, I read about your situation. Am glad she's OK, but if you need to talk, e-mail me privately (lyn.gilbert@gmail.com) - I can listen. She's ready for a new life...that's all I'm getting on an intuitive side without having met her...

Elizabeth, I've read your 6 points re focusing on B's health. You've nailed it. Those points are exactly what I've been focusing on (and then some...). Thing is, I can literally "see" into Bobby's legs...I can't explain it, it just happens (and it happened again with Luis in early June and with Stormy 5 days ago...its wild.). It started at the Preakness and scared the heck out of me, but I kept with it even thru the surgery on the right rear leg. So I'm trying to develop this ability in my equine work.

OMG, I loved "Splish Splash". Thank you for creating that...(I forget who it was...don't mean to be so forgetful...its been an emotional day.)

Bobbyk speaking of "Splish Splash", today was BATH day!!!! You lucky horse...I'll come back later tonight to virtually tuck you in...

LITF, I'm with you.

Heading for vigil.

Take care.

hello all - i just viewed jfrank's (do i have your name right?) tribute to lost in the fog, and want to commend you once again on getting everything right, and making our hearts sing, with love and loss.

i wanted to share with you all what a loss this is for a 6 1/2 furlong horse who has shown such greatness - this is a shorter distance than what barbaro ran, or the three year olds you've seen in the triple crown races -- they get two turns, these sprinters only get one turn arount the track to make their move, and usually have one move to bust.

I had a great 6 1/2 furlong gelding years ago named donner party in southern california. some of you may remember his. our trainer, warren stute, used to gallop him himself in the morning. we had an exercise rider who did the breezes and stuff, but our trainer rode donner party himself, just because he loved him. warren is over 80 now, btw. but he and his brother, mel stute, are some pretty solid horsemen from california.

anyhow, a 6 1/2 furlong horse is special, they run one style, relax on the backstretch and then bust their move usually after their one turn into the home stretch. very dramatic to watch. our horse, donner party, broke his maiden (won) in his first start at del mar with laffit pincay aboard, it was a very thrilling moment. donner party had fans from all over california who would come to watch his races. we didn't have a barn name for him. he was big and rangy.

i am especially grieving for lost in the fog tonight. he was obviously much better than donner party (who was a pretty good allowance horse and won a few stakes races), and these sprinters are very special.. very frisky and full of themselves.

well, i just wanted to share with you all something about the style of the fog, sprinters are special. and i am so sad tonite about the news.

thank you again, alex for all you do for us.

Mish . . .

Hope you are still checking the posts but you must go see Old Friends at Dream Chase Farm at 1841 Paynes Depot Road, Georgetown, KY 40324 telephone 502-863-1775. This is a retirement and rescue faccility for pensioned throughbreds. There are 14 horses there and they do 5 daily tours. All are magnificient but the horse (one of 6) that played Seabiscuit in the movie is there. His name is Popcorn Deelites. Also, Creator is there just to name two. Any donations to these people are very worth while.

Lynn G., Loretta and Sally in Key West...

Totally agree, yes, yes.

To Bobby . . .
what a journey this has been, who could have ever imagined the heart of a champion that would unite so many with a calling to use the miracle of faith. Thank you Bobby for being the inspiration also for unconditional love. Prayers and love for you and everyone.

The Fog was part of my vigil. Yes, he could still have his miracle.

Loretta. . .

You are right.

I Stopped posting earlier because of an imposter using my name to start trouble. Then someone emailed a great idea. There are ways to identify a fake. I am Cuban and I do not engage in arguments.

So folks forgive me, but I will start using Spanish phrases to Barbaro. I will not use a phrase more than once--unlikely that the imposter is Spanish speaking also.

I love all who love Barbaro, All you maniacs have helped with some scary and sad days.If you see a negative/unkind post, it ain't Cuban Marky of the Posse.

Dearest Bobbyheads ...

During this vigil tonight, I just couldn't separate Bobby from LITF in my heart, but I knew that Bobby was stronger and that he was definitely going to heal completely. I don't know 'how' I know this, I just do.

So, for me Bobby is the leader for those who are also struggling and it is his strength that will carry others. In believing this with my whole heart and soul, I lit two 'real' candles tonight at 7pm ... one for Bobby's strength and leadership and another for LITF's healing. But one must lead and the other must follow.

And so, as I played this incredible song covered by Neil Diamond, tears flowed freely but I know that THIS WILL BE DONE!

Yhe song is: "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", and here are the poignantly inspirational lyrics that transcend anything I could ever say:

Neil Diamond - He Ain't Heavy... He's My Brother Lyrics
The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where

But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he, to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another

It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on our way to there
Why not share

And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

(Tears flowing uncontrollably for both brothers!!)

Think of that brave noble horse, standing in his
stall , daily fighting for his life, with grace and dignity and unbounded spirit. Let us, as
keepers of his impact , lovers of his legacy ,

Good Evening, Team Barbaro!

Well I'm officially a mother-in-law. And its great (won't be that different than before..which is fine with me...).

Bobby J, its nearly time to get some sleep. Hope you've been outdoors today (it was muggy, but not that bad...) and that your bath was refreshing. Shine on you crazy diamond. Sleep deep and dream of that grass and the sunshine on your back (the shot of you using your left rear hoof to stand on floored me...in the best sense.).

Sabina, I LOVE the new pics. I'm very thankful to be able to witness your talent. Thank you.

LITF, I'm with you. You are not alone. There are a lot of very generous and compassionate people praying and sending to you - I'm honored and humbled to be one of them. (I'm glad the wedding party broke up early enough for me to get home ASAP.). You're sweet. Just plain sweet. Thank you for simply being, dear one.

Shelly A, check your e-mail...sorry I was so verbose, but as usual, a lot is happening.

Chris Byers, are you the one who asked for Gallant Secret's connections address? Please e-mail me privately...lyn.gilbert@gmail.com. Have to search e-mails...

Am exhausted...will sign off.

Healing and Peace,

Christine,

I don't know if anyone answered your question or not. (I'm trying really hard to use the scroll button today).

I would assume the length of Barbaro's hooves to be around five inches for the hind. It will take almost a full year for the hoof wall to grow out. Could be less though. Now that he's walking his circulation will improve which will help the healing/growth process. Considering how many obstacles he has overcome (Thanks Dr. R!!) I wouldn't be at all surprised if it takes less time.

Thanks Marky and Anna for making me smile. I have so needed a lift. One of my very best friends is of Mexican decent - born and raised in Austin Texas but ended up in Pittsburgh for a while. We were working together and did not like each other at all. She kept calling me "La Grand Putana" and when I found out what that meant my German temper kicked in and I said we can fight now or go have beer. Well I think you know the rest and I always sign her birthday and Christmas cards from " The Pittsburgh Puta"!

Thank you both for a much needed laugh. I am going to call her right now.

HELLO EVERYONE!
Hope you're having a good weekend with Bobby doing well.

BOBBY!
Hope you're feeling well and had a good time outside today! As we participated in your vigil tonight, I can't help but think You truly are the 8th wonder of the world. Stay strong big guy and keep believing. We're here to support you forever and continue to visualize you walking out of NBC while going home. Ond day at a time "B".
God Speed buddy.

ALEX,
Thanks so much for the link to Sabina's new photos and for the updates on Lost in the Fog.

Also just wanted to mention for all of you that had watched our horse "Bond Beauty" race this past tuesday, we did find out that an endoscopic exam confirmed that she had inflammation in her epiglottis, which is an indication that her epiglottis entrapped during the race reducing her ability to breath normally. THIS IS WONDERFUL NEWS FOR US as we were beginning to think "Bond Beauty" had a breathing and or anxiety problem. An Entrapped Epiglottis, I'm told can be treated successfully. We'll keep you posted.

Also, on that note, I wanted to share with you all who have been following campaigningforbarbaro.com that our managing partners for "Bond Beauty" are Jim and Debra Hartman whom are both on the board OF THE INDIANA THOROUGHBRED OWNERS AND BREEDERS ASSOCIATION. Jim and Debra Hartman have just come aboard as our INDIANA AMBASSADORS TO CAMPAIGN IN HONOR OF BARBARO. They are both well respected in the industry.

Finally,
I just want to add that I am a TREMENDOUS FAN OF PERFECT DRIFT! I WATCHED HIM AT THE 128TH KENTUCKY DERBY AND HAVE FOLLOWED HIS CAREER EVER SINCE. GOD SPEED TO PERFECT DRIFT...ROOTING FROM WISCONSIN.

God Bless,

Alex, thanks for your updates and links. I check this site twice daily. You've given us so much information, not only about Barbaro and his team, but about other horses and humans in the racing world. Your descriptions of your early morning workouts--little foxes on the horsepath, etc.--are lovely. You have enabled and bound together a community of friendship and concern that is truly remarkable. Thank you for creating a bright spot of love and hope and shared joy (and sometimes sadness) in a increasingly callous and cynical world. You make my day!

My jingles go out to LITF and the ones who love him. And, of course, our Bobby to keep fighting and KICK ON!

Many thanks to those on the board who have put out prayers and good wishes to my Malcolm. If I didn't put it here, we weren't able to go to Cincinnati Children's. He is still on oxygen. The anesthesiologists wouldn't want to put him under for elective procedures. Malcolm will get better. His O2 requirements keep going down. The most frustrating part is that we are back down at the bottom of the waiting list for Cinci - we have another 2 1/2 month wait.

If anyone knows any other great children's hospitals with "the best" ENTs, please let me know. Malcolm needs tracheal reconstruction to open up his trachea which is scarred from longterm intubation from being premature. He was born at 26 weeks and was a pound and a half.

I've thought about:
Johns Hopkins
CHOP (Philadelphia)
Boston Children's/ Mass Eye & Ear

I supposed these wonderful pediatric centers will have just as long a waiting list ...

It wouldn't surprise me either. Thanks Joyce, for your expert advice.. I know you are a horsewoman. Just in general terms for humans and all animals, movement has to be very good for both legs at this point. I'm so glad he has more freedom now..he's more than earned it.

Alex, I was so touched to read that you gave your gift to Eduardo. Surely he was touched as well & Bobby would be very pleased. I hope Eduardo can visit Bobby soon, as it would likely do them both a lot of good. I always enjoyed grooming horses as much or more than riding them. It creates an intimate bond of trust & affection that is unlike any other -- gee, I miss that.
I enjoy learning more about Giacomo & Perfect Drift -- Barbara's photos are amazing! ( I could spend hours at her site.)

Good Night, Special One. Know you are fast asleep by now having pleasant dreams of tomorrow's grazing in the great outdoors.

I'll be absent for the next 11 days so won't get to check in on you each day like I always do multiple times. I'll also miss Dr. R's Birthday, but I know you'll help to make it a special event for him. I look forward to Alex's updates to catch up on all the happenings that I'll miss.

Alex, keep up the good work. You are the reason that we can keep doing good things for Barbaro and other of the Creator's creatures in need. Keep your eyes open on your morning rides for I know you'll see more deer and foxes. They are visiting for a reason.

I won't be able to say it here, Special One, but I'll carry you in my heart and send you loving thoughts. Keep healing, grazing with your friends in attendance and looking to the day when you walk out the doors of NBC. That day will come.

A short farewell to the rest of you Barbaromaniacs. Keep up the positive thoughts and the loving spirits.

Top sprinter Lost in the Fog has terminal cancer
AP Sports
NEW YORK (AP) - Lost in the Fog, the 2005 Eclipse Award winner as sprinter of the year, has cancer in his spleen and abdomen and his trainer said Friday that the 4-year-old colt will have to be put down soon.

The horse underwent an exploratory procedure Friday that determined the cancer in his spleen had spread, said veterinarian, Don Smith, in a conference call with trainer Greg Gilchrist.

"Unfortunately, we found two other tumors in his abdomen," Smith said. "There is one in his membrane and ligament, about the size of an egg. Unfortunately there is another along his back and its about the size of a football."

They plan to bring the horse back to Golden Gate Fields so that Lost in the Fog can rest comfortably in his own stall.

"We'll just have a week or 10 days with him and then we'll say good bye," Gilchrist said.

Lost in the Fog won the first 10 races of his career beginning in November 2004, setting two track records while becoming Northern California's most exciting horse in years. But he lost the Breeders' Cup Sprint to Silver Train in the final furlong, coming in seventh.

After a six-month break, Lost in the Fog returned this year with a second-place finish in the Golden Gate Fields Sprint and a victory in the Grade 3 Aristides at Churchill Downs on June 3.

The growth was discovered during a sonogram Sunday at UC Davis after Gilchrist sent Lost in the Fog up from his home track for a checkup. The colt had seemed uncomfortable for a week, with changed eating habits, signs of colic and a spike in his temperature.

A small camera was inserted into Lost in the Fog's abdomen on Friday to determine the extent of the growth.

"We had hoped we weren't going to see anything inside there except for what was in the spleen," Smith said. "But you could see the mass in front of you and it was very high right along the backbone. As soon as the scope when in there, you saw it and everyone knew what the implications were."

The horse hasn't had much discomfort so far. How the pain progresses will determine when he is euthanized.

"It's hard to say with this horse," Smith said. "It could be as soon as a week and it could be a month from now. We'll just have to play it by ear."

Lost in the Fog has earned $978,099 with 11 wins and a second-place finish in 14 starts.

Sad to say goodbye. Been there ...done that.
Love to family,
Susan
