    Barbaro Updates: 50

    updates are now here.

Update 495: Lost in the Fog returns home. Excerpt:

Dr. Don Smith, the colt's veterinarian, said the Eclipse Award sprinter was his normal, aggressive self when he returned to the barn and had eaten well after his arrival.

Update 494: Steve Willard just called. He was with Giacomo as he called (about one hour after the Pacific Classic). He said it just was not his day. Giacomo is cooling out well, he looks good and is walking well.

Update 493: A nice win by Lava Man, the favourite for the Pacific Classic. He seemed to accelerate well at the 3/8ths pole and put the race away. He should be considered a top contender for the Breeders Cup Classic at this point, although they did mention they may consider a turf race next. Perfect Drift and Giacomo did not appear to really get into the race, finishing fourth and fifth. Will try to learn more later. There was also a quick clip on Barbaro, good to see it on the big screen (it was part of the Penn video clip).

A nice post on the discussion board on Dancing In My Dreams, who had faced a similar surgery to Barbaro. We noted her first foal's success in update 432.

Finally, another lovely tribute to Lost in the Fog: Tribute to a Champion.

Update 492: Another quick story to follow in the Pacific Classic. We interviewed Dan Hendricks a while ago (trainer of Brother Derek) about his thoughts on Barbaro. He noted the sad story of Cozy Guy. Well Cozy Guy's connections have Top This and That in the race! Jeannine Edwards spoke with the owners and e-mailed me:

they are extremely excited and said this is like being in the KY Derby! They are from the San Diego area and have always dreamed of running a horse at Del Mar.

Update 491: ESPN2 is broadcasting the Pacific Classic from 7 - 8 pm this evening. It will be a great race. All is go for today's big race from the Giacomo camp. I just spoke to Steve Willard (his exercise rider) who has been providing us training updates for the last few days. He is pretty upbeat. Giacomo hand walked today (walked around the shedrow). He's been cleaned up by the barn foreman (Frank), and is now relaxing in his stall as I type. He will be led over to the receiving barn about fifteen minutes ahead of the time that he will be led over to the paddock with the other runners. Steve has positive feelings for the race, everything has pretty much set up the way they want it to be. The distance of the race will suit Giacomo (a mile and a quarter) and Mike Smith (his regular jockey) will start letting him run likely at about the half mile or 3/8ths pole. Steve said it looks to be a great older horse race, with Lava Man and Perfect Drift (who Giacomo just beat in his last start at a less favourable distance for Giacomo) among the eight entries. Anyway, I want to thank Steve for giving us a little insight into the preparation of Giacomo, and wish him (and the rest of this quality field) the best of racing luck.

Jeannine Edwards provided us a great update about tonight coverage in Update 486 and Joe Deegan has also weighed in from Perfect Drift's camp (update 487).

Update 490: A little "housekeeping". Given the overwhelming response of poems, videos and other content created by everyone, I am no longer going to be able to keep up with it all in these updates and on the fan media page (this is a good thing). Fortunately the discussion board includes a folder (labeled: Barbaro Poems / Videos etc.) for such content so I hope people will continue to post their wonderful content there, and others will visit the boards to enjoy everyone's inspiring work. Melissa Harden is also collecting all the creative work at: For the love of Barbaro. Melissa will get the content from the discussion boards, and you can also e-mail Melissa your work (javaellybob@charter.net). That being said, I did want to highlight this tribute from Jessica Frank: Lost In the Fog, Champion Always.

This site has now served more than 1.5 million page views! and is currently ranked 30 in google for the keyword Barbaro. You will notice we have now signed up for the google adwords program (google ads). This will help defray costs associated with the site, and we will also allocate a portion of the earnings to a charity appropriate for this site. We will be very transparent re: the site earnings and what we do with the money. With current traffic we estimate the google ads. could generate $1,000 / month.

Update 489: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (saturday night). I had a nice long chat with Michael as he was ponying a horse (and Stephanie) back from the woodchip track. Dr. Richardson showed Michael the left hind foot yesterday and it appears to be doing whatever it should be doing at this stage of its "recovery". Michael also noted he walks sound (as we saw on the Barbaro grazing video) and is starting to gain some weight.

Good morning big boy! We're all here cheering for you. I will have to get Malcolm your Breyer model since you two are recovering together.

Malcolm is still requiring O2 this am. Boo. He is happy and cheerful though, as always.

Alex - is there anyway you could get info from Michael about how they are supporting the left hind since 90% of the hoof wall (including the sole according to Dr. Dean's Blood Horse questions) is gone. I can't imagine what it looks like although I've seen pictures of partial resections. Is the frog still there? Does he have heel? Is there any rotation of the coffin bone? How is not "ow-y" to walk on even with the bandage?

Thank you - you do such a good job.

I guess when I posted, the update was in transition. I didn't know what was going on and started to worry. "Post a Comment" disappeared and thought perhaps, because I am living in a foreign country and might have made my internet provider upset, they decided disconnect my service. They have blocked many sites such as a tribute to "Lost in the Fog," etc. and has made me upset.

Anyway, good morning everyone and glad my internet server has not disconnected my service.

I will relax and hope today will bring comfort to many despite everything that is going on.

My thoughts are with "Lost in the Fog" and Barbaro.

Barbaro, you are amazing, continue to pray for you and thank God for your healing every day. I know you will have a long life of happy days!

    Hi, Team Barbaro!

ACN...hooray! Wake up sleepyhead!!! Another wonderful day here in Chester county. Am so happy that your left hoof is doing EXACTLY what its supposed to be doing. The right rear is also "feeling" REALLY good...:) You are an inspiration and I'm glad Michael is seeing such fantastic progress. (I'm also picking up your ever-strengthening sense of humor emerging. I laugh at your antics...)

Alex, thank you for posting the link to the tribute for LITF...I love bagpipes and Amazing Grace is one of my all time favorite hymns. I met a musician named Krishna Das (birth name is Jeffrey Kagel) in May. He has a chant that combines the Hare Krishna mantra with Amazing Grace (Sting sings backup vocals and its beautiful)and it is awesome to sing in the car. That chant was the inspiration for one of my poems which, in turn, was part of the inspiration for the Human Lady in my children's stories for Abbie.

Deb in WI, so glad to hear that Bond Beauty is gonna be OK...please give her a huge hug from me. Also congrats to adding the Hartmnans to your Campaign..the Barbaro Effect just spreads out more and more.

Sue, so glad to hear about Walter. What a gem.

Am going for an initial session with Coeur Vive on Tuesday afternoon. He's been thru a lot emotionally and physically - I want to start to establish trust with him and his very sweet human (name is Janet - beautiful lady who will not give up on him). I want them to dance. I'm not giving up on him, either.

LITF, I am with you. Felt such loving energy around you again this a.m. Whatever you need to tell us...whatever your purpose is...now is the time to work it, to show it. There are many of us here who are listening.

To the real Marky...drive that troll nuts...estoy reindo tambien...:)

Must go...am finally caught up on e-mail and I still have to get some stuff done before seeing the kids today...I'm a mother-in-law...sheesh. But I'm loving it.

    Everybody, have a great Sunday.

    Healing and Peace,

You must have enjoyed seeing Michael - he loves you just as we all love you! Great balancing act on 3 legs as you chased that fly...and funny that the next pic was 2 nurses with fly spray! Did you snap your front hooves together as if to say, "Staff - assistance needed"? Your wish is everyone's command! I'll be checking in on you to be sure your week progresses well - big doings on Friday...get ready! With love and ongoing prayers for your healing and comfort, and also for The Fog and his family from your buddy in CT.

    dear alex
, wiht all that is goign on in your world, i am continually grateful for the updates.
becasue of your site, something wonderful happend last night .
i do not always have time to read eveyrbody'spodst but barbaro is a t work here and so is the great one we got to go the extra mile, listen extra crefully ...this is such a sign i nearly fell out of my chair. FOR TO LOOK UPWARD..
thank you debbie thomas fomr new mexico..who ,without barabo site, i might have missed the obvious..cosmic joke..
what are all the things you teach me ,barbaro? in your long, long journey to recovery?
anohthr peaceful night for you and your team who watches every single thing you do 24 -.7..
debbie spoke about the arabic roots of the polar bear who dr deanR. is operating on this week.
.his name is not tom ,dick or harry. it is ALCOR and his brother,M, the two of them were named after stars in the big dipper no less. i ask myself ,a t this time..wiht foggy and distress, and constant vivl for bobby, why i am directed upward into the sky???into the celestial stories that have soi much to give us???? god, the angels live there..too--the ancients used them and now..the last reference is philip pullman who as a physics prof from oxford wrote a trilogy called the dark mysteries..polar bears figure big in it all as extremely loyal and intelligent and fearless..compassionate..
..barbaro brings so much to the nbc center not to mention attention for me,
to look deeper into the connections i have with any animal and humans, to boot.
..pullman talks about stirng theory --we are all connected--and layers /.
    .barbaro again.
.thank you debbie and thank you barbaro for all you reveal to me in every day.
may it be a joyful and easful grazing day for you.
thank you thank you ..pullman;s main lesson deals with other details of catching light..=taht we are NEVER separated from the animals we connect wiht ..we are transformed and in reality ,there is no separation from the ones we love..only transformation from one form to another.
i believe in miracles. i believe in barbaro and in all the other animals and humasn that heloving him has broght me..foggy and all others--the great capacity of love to heal the whole shabang.

Yesterday, I went ahead and made my donation to NBC in honor of Dr. Richardson and his upcoming birthday. At the bottom of the form, there is a field to give credit for the gift so I put ALEX BROWN of Fair Hill Training Center, because after all, none of this info about Barbaro would supplied to us in such a timely matter with out him. Obviously, the regular media are still catching up . . . :-)

    From today's LA Times

    COLUMN ONE
Eating Up the Turf and Surf
Del Mar remains the exception to the rule in horse racing, which is struggling to maintain attendance and the public's interest.
By Bill Dwyre, Times Staff Writer
    8:47 PM PDT, August 18, 2006

DEL MAR — The sport of horse racing, which has seemed rumpled and stained for years, will dress up in its Sunday best tomorrow. It will be time for sport coats, summer dresses, and the Pacific Classic at Del Mar, the $1-million race that is grandiose in both purse size and location.

For 69 years, since singer Bing Crosby and actor Pat O'Brien borrowed on their life insurance policies to open a race track about 20 miles north of San Diego, Del Mar has been sort of a West Coast Woodstock for the wealthy and wide-eyed. Its motto, the one it began with, is one of the most recognizable in sports: Where the surf meets the turf. No big ad agency needed here.

ADVERTISEMENTDel Mar opened its season on a Wednesday, July 19. The crowd was 42,005, the second largest ever here behind the Pacific Classic Day in 1996, when 44,186 showed up to see if Cigar could break the legendary Citation's 16-race win streak.

He couldn't. Dare And Go, ridden by Alex Solis, won.

And there was Solis, on opening day, 10 years later, the star of the show again, winning three times, including both divisions of the featured Oceanside Stakes.

"You get a crowd like today," Solis said, "and it really gets your heart pumping."

It was wild, festive, a throwback to the days when horse racing's big days had a Super Bowl feel and the track, any major track, was the place to be. By 11 a.m., three hours before post time, the grounds were buzzing. By 1, they had become a human logjam, and by race time, they had become a leading spot on the planet for Brooks Brothers shirts, little black dresses, and daytime cleavage.

The sights were not lost on Joe Harper, the 63-year-old grandson of Cecil B. DeMille, who has been the chief executive of the Del Mar racetrack since 1978.

"I go to the Academy Awards every year," Harper said, "and our opening day is better."

But racing cannot subsist alone on Del Mar and on a similar highly successful meeting each year at Saratoga in upstate New York. Nor can it seem to translate its Triple Crown of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont, plus its annual one day of million dollar-plus purses called the Breeders' Cup, into the robust industry it once was, before other pro sports and the Internet and cable television made trips through traffic to the betting windows a much lower priority.

Now, outside of Del Mar and isolated special events, racing has gone from a playground of the rich and famous, and a fantasyland for sports fans in general, to a bunch of tracks where small groups of the regulars hang around TV sets and often never even see a live horse.

Race meetings are too long, attendance too low and tracks too dependent on revenue from bets placed several time zones away.

Racing has splintered its audience, watched it grow old and only recently started to appeal to younger fans through home computer betting. That, of course, doesn't directly affect the huge blocks of empty seats.

Nor can racing easily absorb the effects of a high-profile, negative incident such as Barbaro's breakdown at the Preakness in May, especially when it is followed by the deaths of 13 horses to date at Del Mar.

Barbaro had emerged from a large field to win the Kentucky Derby by 6 1/2 lengths. Barbaro seemed strong, dominant, well-prepared. The public, which actually cares about horse racing in large numbers at Kentucky Derby time, seemed captivated. It seemed to think the horse had a real chance at winning what had not been won since 1978, and what racing has been holding out as a carrot for a new popularity surge ever since.

But Barbaro never got close to a Triple Crown, never got more than 200 yards down the main straightaway at Pimlico on Preakness day before stepping wrong and shattering several bones in his right hind leg. As 118,402 people watched at the track in Baltimore, and millions more watched on network TV, the horse was stabilized, put in a van and shipped off to a veterinary hospital in Philadelphia, where it would undergo several surgeries, while doctors cautioned that its chances of survival were not good.

A total of $87.5 million was bet on that Preakness race, much of it on Barbaro, and for those more financially than emotionally connected to the horse, racing had left a bad taste in their mouths.

"Experiences like that don't bring people back," said Jack Liebau, president of Hollywood Park. "I have been surprised how Barbaro captured people's imagination."

The impact on people of his breakdown was immense, he said. "If they were there, many of them just walked out. If they were watching on TV, they just stopped."

Barbaro jockey Edgar Prado, who stayed with the horse as best he could until medical personnel arrived, was inconsolable afterward. Solis, riding Brother Derek and right next to Barbaro when the bones broke, mourned the loss of a horse that wasn't even his by hugging his wife afterward and crying. Brother Derek's trainer, Dan Hendricks, said that, once he saw Barbaro break down, he had no interest in where Brother Derek, or any other horse, finished in the race.

    Good Morning, TEam Barbaro!

Here is what came to me in the car just a few minutes ago. Its not finished by any means...just the very first raw draft. When its done, I'll send the final version...but this has been 31 years in the creating...

    She Bent Down

She bent down from Heaven's clouds
    And whispered in his ear
"You will race like the wind
    With all your heart
And you will know no fear."
Until the day when the pain appeared
And the riding man held you near
You were taken to a healing place
And in the hearts of many
    You are always held dear.

The many gathered in an unlikely place
    To offer prayer and hope
For the Brave Heart in his fight for life

The prayers gather in strength and Light
To spread out for other souls
To help them in their loving lives

There are those who will stay
    Those who will go
And all those whose love never dies

She bent down from Heaven in gratitude
    For the many souls
    Who never forget her
    Who never stop loving her
    Who spread her message
    Who Remember her Name
    As the Great One

For Ruffian. Sorry this took so long to appear.

This can go in two directions - as a song or as a longer poem with a better structure...but this is how things come to me...rough form first, then I hone it.

    Enjoy...

    Healing and Peace,
    Lyn Gilbert

Great news from Michael this morning - Especially good to hear the left hind is doingwhat it is supposed to do - Sabina's picture of "the itch" gives a clue that things are good as Bobby stands comfortably on it, and scratches with the right...

Alex: so glad google came through with the ads - who could have fathomed the success of this site that you and Tim have created (and others who help)

It's a beautiful Sunday morning in Colorado, and I am lucky because I get to go gallop up mountain trails on the back of a horse....

    Hello everyone,

Just wanted to provide a little clarity on the bracelet situation as both Skyler and myself have been getting many emails about these bracelets (btw, we are happy for your support and appeciate you contacting us :)

Our bracelets are blue/green with the slogan "Believe in Miracles" "Believe in Barbaro" and horse & star (for Barbaro's star) impressions.
We are not, nor have we ever been associated with ANY group or vendor selling Barbaro merchandise.
We are still awaiting approval from Mr & Mrs Jackson and will NOT proceed without it. If the Jackson's do not wish for us to go any further, we will not and will continue to hold them both in the highest regard.
Additionally, this is a completely non-profit endeavor. Both Skyler and I have happily commited personal time to this and will continue to do so. NO profit will be made by us.
We expect our bracelets to be in the $2.00 to $3.00 range plus shipping fees. This would allow for a $1.50 to $2.00 donation per bracelet to the charitable recipient of the Jackson's choosing.

I hope this information will be helpful. Thanks for the hundreds of emails of support and well wishes. We are so touched by your kindness!

Beautiful Barbaro ~ ACN ~ those three words make my heart smile. You are being watched over by healing angels, God is in His Heaven, as you are being carried along on the wings of prayers as you mend your broken bones and grow a new hoof. Remember: day by day; slow and steady wins this race. We are here for you every step of the way, gallant one.

Continued prayers are with Lost in the Fog and his connections. Fog: may your journey home be serene and peaceful.

Lyn Gilbert: your poem on Ruffian brought me to my knees. I am a huge Ruffian fan - plan to wear my Ruffian cap today as a matter of fact; your tribute to this gallant beauty is beyond wonderful. I look forward to the completed version and hope you will post it here or on the discussion board. Go for Wand is another gallant filly, as you undoubtedly know. Thanks, Lyn.

    G-day, All.

Why can't you people get a grip. You continue to chat away on here even though Alex has gone to all the trouble of making you a new discussion area and a chat room. Don't you get it or what??? He did that so you people could go and chat somewhere other then on here. This is for people who want to comment about Barbaro and how he is doing. Take your Dr. R comments and everything else you want to talk about to the other board please.....

    This is for Barbaro comments.

I am so glad that Barbaro keeps having comfortable nights and that he is doing so well. It is so great that he gets to go out and graze now. Next week Peter and Michael will be on grazing duty. Our prayers and candles have been answered.

Posted by: Anna at August 20, 2006 3:01 PM

Dr. is connected in that he is ONE of the many people who take care of Barbaro. However his birthday is not connected to Barbaro. So birthday talk goes to the other discussion board. Chatting goes to the chat room. Pretty simple actually. Comments on Barbaro's updates go here. Is it really that hard to figure out???

What wonderful news! I finally brought myself to watch the grazing video today (I was worried that he had lost so much weight that it would upset me) and I was pleasantly surprised to see how wonderful he looks. What an amazing animal! I know we say it over and over again, but it just takes my breath away every day to see how he's taking everything in stride. I am so inspired by his adaptability to his circumstances. I feel like I've been awakened and taught a very important life lesson from this wonderful horse. Have a great Sunday everyone! Thanks Alex for working 7 days a week to keep us informed.

I just finished watching the "Lost in the Fog Tribute". It was just lovely! Beautiful photos and wonderful music. Kudos to the creator. I hope someone give his owner a copy. I'm guessing the owner is the sweet older gentleman leading Fog. No matter which side of yesterdays debate you sit on......I just hope as with Barbaro, Fogs people listen to him. Fog will tell them what he wants.

Bobby told us. He called all of us here to this site. Some of us have branched out and taken action with Horse Slaughter, others have gone after track safety. Some have championed animal welfare issues. Others write eloquent stories or poems. And still others Create videos. Bobby has inspirited us all.

It is to this to his credit we risk standing up for a higher mission. The Barbaro effect has a distinctive look and feel. Mr. & Mrs. Jackson are our best role models. Not a lot of talking. But their understated actions speak volumes. Bravo Barbaro Nation! Let us continue to pray our boy into total health. Our benefit is along the way we get to learn from him.

I also just watched the wonderful LITF video that Alex put at the top. Just looking at that big, healthy, strong, beautiful animal, it is so hard to believe that he has been consumed by such a devastating disease.
I think it's important to him and to his people that we remember him just as he looks in this video.

God Bless and keep him comfortable

Posted by: ShelleyA at August 20, 2006 3:15 PM

Shelley, he surely does look the picture of health, and that's a great way to remember him. I wonder why they're running more tests?

Posted by: Anna at August 20, 2006 3:17 PM

    Anna

I've heard (but not sure) that the tests are just so they know how to treat him when they bring him home. So they have a better idea of how long they might be able to keep him comfortable.

    Interesting.

What if a consortium of Barbaromaniacs happened to have the winning ticket?

Sorry about posting the whole thing. I cannot figure how to find a link when these things come in on a Google alert.

Horse Racing: Lottery notion scratches itch
    by Dale Austin
A good idea is a jewel to behold, even if it seems to come out of left field, or, say, the backstretch where the main goal is aimed at a winner's circle somewhere else.

In Maryland racing a couple of weeks ago, a good idea surfaced in the form of an announcement about a lottery campaign with a brilliant tie-in to the Maryland Million, the signature day of racing for state-sired horses. The Million, set for October 14, will come up for the 21st time this year, at Laurel Park, and this time around, a fan can take home a million dollars. That's more than will be awarded, combined, to the owners of all horses on Million Day.

Even before the announcement made inroads, the campaign was already in evidence from a series of short bursts on television showing beautiful close-ups of thoroughbreds in action, with voices in the background explaining the chance for riches in the scratch-off game and race-day festivities.

The inner workings are somewhat complicated but in the end there ought to be some good reports and maybe even some encouragement about the future.

The prime consideration here is television. Racing would like to attract many more newcomers than the ones who see the stories in magazines and newspapers. Television has such a wide audience. And it has great impact. The careers of Funny Cide, Smarty Jones, Afleet Alex and Barbaro would not have attracted all the attention that they did during the recent Triple Crown runs if they hadn't been on TV.

That goes double for Barbaro, whose injury early in the Preakness and subsequent crisis treatment at the New Bolton veterinary center has caught an emotional reaction from the occasional television viewers. They didn't know about the colt until the Preakness, now they ask about his health, which in mid-week, was very good,

For decades, racing people have been frustrated about promoting their game. A recent historical reference in the Thoroughbred Times magazine pointed to an event 75 years ago when the celebrated horse, Sun Beau won the Arlington Handicap and became the largest money-winning thoroughbred of all time. Writer John Hervey noted that the "track overlooked a bet," because the milestone went unmentioned to the crowd. His earnings were $330,004 but in those times, it was as big as the million-dollar figures are today.

An incident that seems hard to believe still can be heard about when track publicists and management types get together and talk. It seems that on the day when legalized bookmaking ended in New York, back in the 1930's, a huge crowd of more than 70,000 gathered for the races at old Jamaica Race Track, an event which prompted some social leader who had a position of importance at the track to grumble, "Why don't these people go to the beach or somewhere else than here? There's no room for them!"

So the TV commercials for the Maryland Million scratch-off lottery ($5 variety) with all its side-benefits fit the modern-day concept of promotion exceedingly well. The Maryland Million program can't afford costly promotions like the lottery has, neither can the other beneficiary, Maryland racing, and in particular, Laurel Park.

Several scratch-off customers, decided by earlier drawings, will go into Maryland Million Day with the chance to get the big prize. That's $1 million, for one of the ticket holders. The winner gets $1 million and the first runner-up receives $25,000. Also to be given away is $50,000 in an added drawing at the track. All customers who paid out $5 and wound up with losing tickets can mail them to the lottery headquarters and receive free admission for Maryland Million Day.

The idea for this all came about at a meeting of Lottery chief Buddy Roogow, Maryland Million's Cricket Goodall and Lou Raffetto, track president at Laurel. Who's idea was this beautiful TV commercial? All three demurred the question and finally Roogow gave some credit to his boss, Governor Robert Ehrlich.

"He's asked us before to do something for racing," Roogow said. "So we told Crickett and Lou what we had in mind and they went along. I like the opportunity to use Maryland Million in our commercials. That really fits in well. Now our main purpose for existing is to show a profit and we hope this will. If it helps with racing, then we're happy for that. The Governor asked the Lottery (commission) to help out several years ago and racing got a subsidy of something like 10 million from lottery funds. This time, maybe things will change and racing will be helped by (legalizations of ) slot machines."

Hey guys...Have missed all of the wonderful Barbaromaniacs...we have a big day of racing ahead of us!

I must say that the photo "Bobby vs The Fly" as I call it, reminds me that celebrities are always complaining about being caught in candid photos...This is my favourite...It surely beats "Britney and Baby."

My order for a bracelet will be with Lisa and Skylar....period.

I sincerely hope that Dr. R. is able to save our new Polar Bear friend, and I am so glad that KF let us know that the bear doesn't need any fish!
Nothing says I love you like flounder and flowers...YIKES!

Nothing can fully measure the sadness that we all feel for Lost in the Fog and his connections...
It is the sport of horse racing that has given us so much...both the greatest moments of joy and the saddest of events...I pray for a safe day for all in racing...whether they be in the stands or on the track...were it not for this sport...we would never have come to know these wonderful animals and the effect they have on our lives...

For that, I will be eternally grateful...

Barbaro brought horse racing and horse issues back into the forefront of my life after a 31-year hiatus (yes, Ruffian) during which I would only peep, and listen with one ear, because of fear. From what I've seen on the posts since P-Day, he's had that effect on a great many people.

    The Barbaro Effect continues!

Why haven't you just asked for contributions to keep this site going? I, for one, would be more than happy to contribute :) Without this site, we would not have all these fantastic updates about our Hero Barbaro. If you opened up a 'special' account at a bank like Wachovia, am sure you would get more money than you need to keep this going. If people are willing to buy all these baskets of goodies for Bobby, they sure should be willing to donate to this wonderful site as well!

A funny training note about Bobby's half-brother Perfect Drift:

"...In order to channel some of the gelding's aggressions away from human flesh, and keep his mind occupied, Johnson bought the horse a plastic ball, which hangs outside the stall. Many trainers, such a Nick Zito, use this ball to help entertain the horses. Johnson, however, took it one step farther. He got himself a black marker and drew a picture of a horse on the ball and wrote the name War Emblem under it. "As Wayne (Lukas) would say, I'm trying to get into his head," Johnson said. "The horse chews on the ball constantly. I'd say he savages War Emblem about a thousand times a day" - from Steve Haskin in BloodHorse.com 5/31/02 "

    Remember...NO dumb questions!

Yes, it means that all of the turf races have beeen moved to the dirt. Usually because of weather. Rain would make the turf dangerous.

Usually you have a lot of scratches in thoses races..the horses that are ONLY turf horses won't run

    Glad to see you're back

I know what I will be doing this evening!! Now whom shall i cheer for??? gosh..

Posted by: Mary L Ohio at August 20, 2006 5:53 PM

Yes, Bobby's and PD's stars are similar in shape, they have similar coloring and some white on their front pasterns...but I must say, with all due respect, that PD's ears are just a tad longish. I'm not saying he looks like a mule. I'm sure his ears are an asset to his racing and opponent-intimidation strategies.

Who is PD's dam? I ask because isn't Dynaformer dark all over with no white?

Posted by: Susan E. at August 20, 2006 5:59 PM

Alex, If I remember right.. Even though Perfect Drift has the same "father" as Barbaro, they are not considered 1/2 brothers because they don't share the same dam correct?? The brother/sister issue is always from the dam's side..

so what do they call them when they both have same father but not dam?

Posted by: Mary L Ohio at August 20, 2006 6:00 PM

    Here's PD's trainer's website:

    www.teamroo.com/perfectdrift.htm

To answer my own question, his mom is Nice Gal by Naskra.

He and Bobby are both very buff!

Posted by: Susan E. at August 20, 2006 6:03 PM

Pamela, I think that means that there are no races on the turf today.

That was a wonderful post you wrote earlier! You sum up things very well. I sure hope we get to keep up on the polar bear.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 20, 2006 6:03 PM

HA HA Susan E....so glad you aren't saying Perfect Drift looks like a mule...here's hoping that the other horses in the race only see what his backside looks like !

Posted by: Pamela at August 20, 2006 6:06 PM

Horses that have the same father but not the same mother don't have any particular name. It only counts if they have the same dam.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 20, 2006 6:07 PM

I think I have to go for Giacamo. I don't think he gets much credit for winning the Derby, so it would be nice to see him do well at a 4-year-old.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 20, 2006 6:08 PM

And Lynda...he does look spectacular...saw a video clip of him earlier this past week...Giacomo you look MAH VE LOUS....

Posted by: Pamela at August 20, 2006 6:12 PM

Mary L. you are right, if a horse is by the same sire, as is the case for Perfect Drift and Barbaro, we do not call them half brothers. If they are out of the same dam, but by a different sire, i.e. Man in Havana and Barbaro, we consider them half Brothers. Clearly the former are related, you just would not call them half siblings. The latter are much fewer as a dam can only have one foal per year, a sire can breed upto 120 mares a year (maybe more, I don't know).

Having said all that Perfect Drift is an awesome racehorse for sure. He is ultra consistent and last year was close to challenging for horse of the year. He has suffered from a little "seconditus" in his career.

Same mom = related; same dad = zip.

By the time I get that into my little blonde head, they'll change the rules!

I don't have a preference in today's race--with Lava Man in there too, I wouldn't be comfortable choosing just one! I hope all the horses and jockeys come home safe; then they all win in a way.

As for those sires making a hundred or more foals per year--well, all I can think of right now is that scene in "Blazing Saddles":
    "Baby, please!!--ten is my limit!!"

Posted by: Susan E. at August 20, 2006 6:32 PM

TVG reports that Lava Man supporters are emailing in their displeasure at seeming lack of respect...

As you rightly point out Susan E...Dynaformer apparently doesn't share the same problem...of a limit, that is...

Posted by: Pamela at August 20, 2006 6:39 PM

Lava Man isn't get respeck? Why not? He's had an amazing year.

What does a racehorse have to do if he/she isn't a TC contender?

    Baltimore Debbie

Posted by: Debbie at August 20, 2006 6:41 PM

Butting in...yeah. How do you tranquilize a polar bear for surgery? Slip it in his food or water?--but they're not supposed to eat or drink before general anesthesia, right? How do you check the bear's vitals every day and do cast changes and radiology studies without putting Mr. Bear under? You can't just walk into a polar's enclosure the same way you can walk into Bobby's stall.

Posted by: Susan E. at August 20, 2006 6:44 PM

Shelley...they are unhappy that the commentators are not siding more with Lava Man...

Debbie...rumor has it that Bobby is very unhappy over fish being added to menu at NBC...was overheard saying.."Some of my best friends are fish!"

Posted by: Phyllis M...Dallas,Texas at August 20, 2006 6:52 PM

They will probably shoot the bear with a tranquilizer gun. That is how they get wild animals in order to put detection devices on them, so I bet that is how they will do this guy. As for his recovery, that is a whole other story. They will have to lay him back out somewhere and hope he doesn't screw the surgery up.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 20, 2006 6:53 PM

LYNDA PELLITTERI - I agree with you about Giacomo and the Derby - the affection was with Afleet Alex because of Alex's lemonade - a wonderful child who started a wonderful charity - but nonetheless GIACOMO won the Derby! So I'm going for Giacomo to win and Perfect Drift to place....

More importantly, safe home to every horse who puts 4 hooves to track today, and to their brave jockeys as well. Godspeed to all!

Have a couple pictures of Perfect Drift and from the front he looks exactly like Barbaro, they have the same sire, Dynaformer. Perfect Drift has raced thirty nine times, won 11 and finished second 12 times, and finished third 6 times, he is seven years old and has won $4,530,483 in purses and is the active leading money winner. Perfect Drift accomplished something no horse has been able to do this year: finish in front of Lava Man. "He's remained sound and mentally sharp all these years because he has a regular schedule that includes the winter off at my farm," said his owner Dr. Reed, who owns 110-acre Stonecrest Farm in Kansas City."He sometimes stands in up to a foot of snow there. We let him play with the other horses. By the time spring comes, he's ready to go back to work."
You throw in Derby winner Giacomo, and the Pacific Classic should be a barn burner. You can watch it on ESPN2 at 7:00.

Just got this from the Saratoga site...

    MTO-Ladina (L) 3 F 117 Velasquez, C (1) Groves, H Matz, M

Ladina was one of the last four listed in race 9 with MTO before their name. What does MTO mean?

    ShelleyA,
right now the TIGER and Luke are playing the PGA open, Tiger is in the lead....but ,,if he ties with Luke, they will play 18 holes tomorrow for the tiebreaker. So hopefully, we will not have to worry about a tiebreaker and can watch ESPN2.

Don't take me to the bank on this one....but knowing the PGA, I remember Monday play. Cmon golfers, help me.

Jo, MTO = Main Track Only. Just as many horses scratch when a turf race is moved to dirt (main track), so horses are entered into a scheduled turf race, anticipating the race may be switched to dirt.

no worries about the golf. The PGA Championship does a 3 or perhaps 4 hole playoff immediately after the completion of the round. They will be done today (assuming no weather delays) but it's a major and it will be run on CBS and not moved over to ESPN or ESPN2.

Posted by: FOB at August 20, 2006 8:10 PM

    Alex,

I hate to argue with you. Wait, I LOVE to argue with you! The age of a horse on January 1st only applies in certain disciplines, such as racing and certain show classes. In many other equine disciplines, the age and ability of the rider is more important. Out in the WEST here, my daughters and I barrel race, as well as do some English and Western Pleasure classes. The only time the age of the horse matters (in some show circuits) is in some halter and green classes. Otherwise, classes are broken down by age/ability of the rider, regardless of the age of the horse.

Posted by: Pamela at August 20, 2006 8:25 PM

    Hey FOB:

Just so you know how fitting biological birthday's can be:

These four guys, who were born on the second to last day of their respective months, are first among equals in their respective professions, as evidenced by the reverence accorded them by their peers: August 30 Virgos, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Oracle of Omaha Warren Buffet and chief of surgery at UPenn’s New Bolton Center with magical hands Dr.Dean Richardson; December 30 Capricorn, incomparable golfer whose achievements to date rank him among the greatest ever Tiger Woods, and April 29 Taurus undefeated Kentucky Derby winner by the biggest margin in 60 years and champion patient racehorse Barbaro Jackson.

That's cosmic logic for you... Now if you add Perfect Drift and Dale, Sr. to that line-up...

    Cheers,
    Friar Tuck
    www.robinhoodradio.com

Anybody know when Giacomo's (biological) birthday is...?

Posted by: Friar Tuck at August 20, 2006 8:25 PM

Alex, thanks for mentioning Perfect Drift. I picked him to win the Derby in (what year??) but what stood out for me were his ears!! He had the most alert ears I had ever seen on a horse. So I started calling him "my horse with the ears" LOL

How totally cool that he and Bobby are both by Dynaformer and he looks a bit like him. No wonder I was attracted to him! This is one hard-knocking horse that seldom fails to get a piece of the purse.

Wishing all a safe trip today in the Classic, and lots of tasty grass for Bobby and ACN, and love and prayers for LITF.

    TO LISA AND SKYLER:

    Lisa, you posted:

"...Our bracelets are blue/green with the slogan "Believe in Miracles" "Believe in Barbaro" and horse & star (for Barbaro's star) impressions.

    Lisa Morin

Posted by: lisa morin at August 20, 2006 02:53 PM

I just need to say that the integrity, honesty and discipline which both you and Skyler have displayed in this ongoing endeavor is to be applauded and appreciated to the highest degree possible.

I do not want to disparage anyone else's honorable intentions; however, I have purchased several of these rubberized silicone bracelets from other worthwhile organizations in the past, and all of them have been in the very same price range that you describe here, and in those cases, also, part of the proceeds were going to a charitable foundation. If your bracelets are in the $2/3 price range, and of this amount $1.50/2.00 is being donated to a Barbaro-type organization, then, indeed, you are making NOTHING on these bracelets. Again, you are to be commended for your selflessness and for your time and efforts which can't be compensated at this point because so much of it has gone into this venture already.

I eagerly await the approval from the Jacksons and to placing my order for several bracelets as a tribute to Barbaro AND as an acknowledgement and appreciation of your kindness, selflessness and generosity of time and labor that will not go unnoticed.

Thank you for again taking time to explain further what your efforts have been to this point; there was never any doubt in my own mind, and I hope you have cleared the air for those who might have had some concern.

I wrapped the TOGA around me and I
Opened the door, and then I
Splish, splash... I'M FINISHED WITH THIS BATH!!
Well how was I to know there was a party going on?

Reelin' with the feelin', movin' and a'groovin'
    Rockin' and a'rollin', yeah

Bing bang, I saw the whole gang
Dancin' IN THE FLOOR OF MY STALL, yeah!
Flip flop, they was doin' the bop
THE BOBBYHEADS WERE ALL HAVING A BALL!
THERE WAS TIM AND ALEX, DR. R AND KATHY A
AND KENNETT FLORIST TOTIN' MY OWN VERY SPECIAL HAY
    A- well-a, splish splash,
I AM FINISHED WITH THIS BATH!!
I went and put my STRUTTIN' DUDS ON!!

    I was a GRAZIN' IT'S AMAZIN',

    Pamela,
You'd need everybody's birthdays...But (from info just gleaned from the board) based on how Tiger Woods and his biological birthday brother Bobby are doing, you gotta like the reliable, a job worth doing is worth doing well Taurus, Perfect Drift.
Giacomo...he's an Aquarian, ruled by the planet of the unexpected, Uranus, so you never can tell with him. If he's focused, wow. After all, how many 50-1 longshots have won the Derby? One other, right?

They train in the cold. They
In snow, they clear the track and treat it for ice.
Of course if there is a big snow, then they can't train.
I've already seen them running in the snow. I hate that!!!

But horses don't mind the cold. They are much more sensitive to the heat and humidity. And they wear blankets

    Hello everyone,

    Sally

    - I think your questions are great - it helps everyone (who doesn't already know) learn more about our equine friends.

    Shelley

    - I was surprised to hear that horses are more sensitive to heat than cold. There are so many here in Florida and they seem to carry on normally in spite of the heat - as long as they sweat. From what I've heard, there's only a problem if a horse doesn't sweat. And guess what the treatment is for that? You're going to love it - a large beer every day. It works too. Anyway, I haven't been around horses my whole life, just the past 2 years and am still learning.

    Janice

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 20, 2006 9:48 PM

Well when I go to Calder next month - I'll have to buy the horses a beer!!! Would be my pleasure.

ANYONE--the start time for tonight's race: is it 7:00 pm EASTERN or what?

Whoever posted about the difference in horse ages vs. riders' ages and different disciplines: thanks! Very interesting. It leads me to a follow up:

If most thoroughbreds are foaled by the end of April, why isn't a different date--such as April 1 or May 1--chosen as the universal birthday? Is this based on the racing calendar?

    #####
Therese, so sorry about your pup Zeke. It sounds like he will be okay though. Smart baby, to bring himself home! Please keep us posted.

Posted by: Susan E. at August 20, 2006 9:52 PM

    Therese,

    The candle count is increasing!!

The horse who didn't sweat had a beer every day for about 2 wks. before she started to sweat. She lived up north and had just relocated to FL a few months ago. I don't know if that is conventional treatment or not, but that's what their Vet prescribed and it's working for her.

Janice, does that beer/sweat thing apply to humans?

I do think there's something to it. I have lived here in St. Louis for 21 years and I have never, not even once, seen a Clydesdale break a sweat. Not even when they're pulling the A/B beer wagons around at high speed!

Here you go...story of Phar Lap

    http://www.equinenet.org/heroes/phar.html

Posted by: ShelleyA at August 20, 2006 10:26 PM

Hey Linnie...Phar Lap is based on the true life racing story about the legendary Australian racing champion (Phar Lap)...the movie takes you from the early days when Phar Lap, despite his lack of pedigree, was snapped up by his future trainer and goes on to become Australias greatest race horse...He was so reveared, his heart was kept in rememberance of his courage and fighting spirit...I may be mistaken, but I think his heart is still on view today...

Posted by: Pamela at August 20, 2006 10:29 PM

One of Phar Lap's nicknames was Bobby.

"Phar Lap was born in 1927, sired by Night Raid and out of Entreaty, by Winkie, in New Zealand. He was brought to Australia as a two year old. A bright red chestnut, he grew to be a huge 17.1 hands high, and for those reasons had several nicknames, among them "Big Red", "The Red Terror", "The Wonder Horse" and "The Big Fellow". But to his trainer Harry Telford and his groom, he was knows as just "Bobby". He was not a particularly well bred horse, and he was not beautiful, but he was gentle to handle and he was fast, very fast, often coming from behind with a great surge of speed at the end of the race to win. "

    Therese,

My choc. lab had his back right leg broken too - it was a clean break with bone snapped in two. They inserted a pin to stablize and then went back and wrapped wires above & below the break to keep the pin from moving. He went through 3 surgeries and came through them all like a champ. My vet told me that labs are extremely resilient and have a high pain tolerance which helps them in recovery and to keep the stress low. The only remaining effects of his injury are some ugly scars and a very peculiar gait that he adopted while compensating for his injury. Your Zeke is going to be ok. I will say a prayer for him - let us know how his surgery goes ok?

That's very common. Reason why many horses are on lasix. He should be okay but I imagine they'll mention it when racing comes on cause Declan's Moon is a VERY popular horse. Think he was two yr old of the year in 2004

    QUESTION, QUESTION!!!

WHAT DID JERRY BAILEY MEAN WHEN HE SAID THAT PD AND OTHERS DON'T HAVE TO WIN TODAY ... THEY JUST HAVE TO CLOSE IN AND SHOW UP FOR THE EASTERN TRACK MEETS? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AND WHAT DOES IT REFER TO? THEIR PLACING FOR THE BREEDERS CUP RACES????

    HELP!!! THANKS!!!

    Linnie,

Yes, that they will still get to the Breeder's Cup if they run well today but don't necessarily have to win.

Barbaro Nation -- Just back from the last few at Saratoga. Jennys on the Radio took a fall at the far turn in the 10th (maiden, on the dirt, inquiry was cleared.) Announcer said she got up and walked. As a maiden, not much news on her, and no update I could find. She wasn't well known, and tended to finish in the back of the pack.

    Edgar won on Treasured Song

As Jennys on the Radio rode by the winners circle in the equine ambulance, thousands of fans at the rail kept about their business. I could see her head in the ambulance, looking all around. The fans were dealing with betting slips, cell phones, social plans. Nobody I saw even looked at the ambulance.

It occurred to me we owed even a non-celebrity horse a moment of, something. Well wishing. Good luck. Something before the first dinner cocktail. These were my thoughts as I walked out the Wright St entrance past the line of limos, wondering what decision would be made about an invisible filly who fell at Saratoga.

Is it just me? Have I been hanging out with the Barbaromaniacs too long? LOL. One idea -- An announcement of a brief moment of quiet whenever a horse goes down and needs a ride off the track. A tradition of respect. As a community to recognize the effort these horses make for our entertainment.

Comments? Am I getting too soft in the head? Is this the sound of one hand clapping?

    Peace, Susan in Saratoga

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 20, 2006 11:36 PM

    Susan H,

I too agree that some acknowledgment of what has happened when a horse is injured would be a kind gesture, rather than business as usual. My guess is that they don't want to bum out the crowd so nothing is said.

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at August 20, 2006 11:38 PM

Its betting and gambling and alot of those people couldn't care less what happens to a horse. They only care about how much money they won/lost.

Sorry to say - but in all my years in California going to the races not many people cared about the horses themselves. I always did since I have loved them since I was a little girl!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 20, 2006 11:40 PM

I hope that I am not repeating information posted earlier.

Ladina did indeed finish 3rd; she ran because of heavy rain in Saratoga over the last 24 hours, which meant that early today turf races were moved off the grass.

Gretchen and Roy Jackson's Lael Stables had a horse win the feature today at Saratoga: Auguri.

Jennys on Radio is a horse based at Aqueduct in the barn of a small trainer, Jim Ferraro. He runs mostly at Aqueduct with horses who unfortunately don't win very often; I met him at Saratoga last summer and he seems terrific, quite friendly and welcoming. Given Jennys low profile, however, my guess is that the only attention she'll get will be in Monday's Daily News or New York Post. Sherry Ross, Jerry Bossert, and Ed Fountaine are generally quite conscientious about noting horses' injuries and when they're put down.

    Cheers,

    Teresa

    SUSAN H

I agree with you, there should be a moment of silence when a horse goes down. The crowd reaction you described confirms for me that breakdowns have become all too common. That is unacceptable.

I hope Jenny makes it. I wonder if we'll ever find out. It's been almost three months and we've never found out what happened to JJ Jake, 6th race, Hollywood Park, July 3.

Posted by: Susan E. at August 20, 2006 11:41 PM

Susan...I agree totally with you!!!! She has her people who care and I think perhaps we could work on this issue and begin a new wave of compassion for those who are injured during a race. I will start an email campaign to the tracks...I think the announcers could just do it and it could become the accepted response.
Don't for one second think you are not thinking clearly because you most certainly are...as for hanging around with the Barbaromaniacs too long...it's the best place to hang out...your observation was right on target..it is part of the Barbaro effect you know. How lucky are we??? Thanks for bringing it to our attention by your post.

I agree. They stand for injured football players. These are athletes too!

Posted by: ShelleyA at August 21, 2006 12:05 AM

Oh Susan H! You described that scene too well. I could just picture it (the cell phones, the betting tickets, the dinner plans) how awful is that? My heart sunk reading it.

I agree with everyone - a small moment of silence at the track would be appropriate for fallen horses. A lovely idea. But I don't think we should hold our breath waiting for that to happen anytime soon :(

On a lighter note, I'm going to Saratoga for the TRAVERS!! I've never been there, can't wait!

Posted by: J in NJ at August 21, 2006 12:07 AM

Jeri - I hear you on those who did not pay attention to Jennys in the equine ambulance. I had that reaction walking home. And yet, as I reflected, I felt that each person is on a path that is his or hers alone. Carrying those thoughts about people I didn't know didn't seem to be helping Jennys. Or Barbaro, or dear LITF. Or wee Zeke. Hmmmm...

And who's to say I was the only one who sent a prayer with the ambulance. Or that not paying attention is a bad thing -- it's just that nobody has set the tone and expected it from us yet. Yet. And who's to say whether the outcome might have been different if there hadn't been a Barbaro Nation citizen / animal communicator at the rail holding the intention for easy loading and safety for each field. :-) We just don't know.

What we do know is the hundredth monkey effect doesn't require 100% of the population to have a positive intention for it to come about. A small % works. And with over $2 million a day in handle at Saratoga, a lot of people are going to be preoccupied. Yet as we who listen more deeply to the horses, who stand by them in these boards and in the world, we feel like -- we are -- millionaires. (Must have lost track of the limo, it was here someplace) LOL

If I hear any news on Jennys will post it. Sorry about the long post...

    Believe in miracles

Of course you are right - I just am such an animal person and have raised my daughters to be the same that I know I react badly to the general public at times.
And remember the outpouring of caring for our Barbaro at the Preakness - it should be that way for all of them.
At least a look up to see Jenny as she was carried off would have been all I would have asked.

Has anyone experienced difficulty viewing the entire Kentucky Derby video or the video of the Florida race? I could view most of the video, but not the last moments when Barbaro wins!
I wanted to thank Jeannette and her husband,Doug, for showing my daughter and I the horses at Ryerss equine facility today. Those retired horses really received a lot of love from all the visitors! I only learned about Ryerss from reading about Barbaro's recovery on this web site, since Jeannette posted about it here. If anyone lives near Chester County in PA, you may want to visit also. Sabina Pierce, the photographer, keeps a horse there. Her horse, Toby, is beautiful, but is a nipper! Thanks Alex for all you do in maintaining all the Barbaro updates and horse racing info! Darlene in PA

Posted by: Jeri at August 21, 2006 12:19 AM

    Hello Barbaro family,

First of all Susan H., I hope Jenny is OK, please keep us posted. I agree, a moment of respect for an injured horse is vital, and should be done. Great idea.

You've not seen me post at all today. I've been in airports, and on airplanes, all day. I tell you I was on airplanes as it relates to a very touching story I have to share.

I'll make it as brief as I can, I'm very weary right now and ready to have a comfortable night.

On one of my flights, I took out my latest issue of "The Thoroughbred Times" to read. A sweet couple sitting next to me took notice and they asked if I had a horse. I took out my billfold and showed them my photo of Joe, my retired thoroughbred. My 9yo hugh (17 hands) furry son, with a hugh attitude to match, which I love. I told them that besides owning a retired TB, my interest in horseracing rested with watching racing on ESPN (have it on now in my hotel room), and Barbaro and other horses needed our help/prayers. I'm not a "player" in the sense I don't wager on them. This amused them.

Of relevance here is this couple is from Japan. They knew about Barbaro, he's in the news there too. They were very sorry to hear about his accident. What's more, they thought that he had been put down back in July, after the laminitis set in. They had been on holiday much of the last month, hence not up-to-date on Barbaro's current status. Well, you can imagine what the majority of our conversation dealt with the remainder of our flight.

I told them all of the current news, that his comfort level had risen to the point that he is able to go outside and graze, but that he was still not healed and had a long way to go, still not out of the woods, etc. I wish I would have had a camera to capture the sheer delight in their eyes, particularily the woman, she kept nodding her head and saying "good", "good", with a genuine smile that matched her joy.

The gentleman had a laptop with him so I gave him all the relevant websites to check. vet.upenn.edu would lead him to the most recent grazing photos (thanks Sabina!) and the video as well. They could not have been more pleased and said they would check all of this as soon as they could.

When we parted ways at baggage claim, they both took my hand, thanked me for my great conversation and their last words to me were "Go Barbaro".

Everyone, make it a "comfortable" night, and prayers to Lost in the Fog and his family, and now Jenny too.

Posted by: Skyler at August 21, 2006 12:22 AM

Jeri -- Word. I totally agree. Good for you raising your wee'uns to be mindful of the animals.

My mind is a clickin... local citizen input on the next licensee (Jan 07) for the 3 NY tracks? ... and our City mayor has been involved ... hmmmm... "Moment of Respect" Do we like how that sounds? :-) Some times people just need to be shown how to do the right thing. Otherwise, momentum rules.

Jennys fall was just off the edge of the replay (she wasn't in the front and it happened on the far turn) and of course when dear Bobby got hurt it was right in front of the crowd, and he was the Derby Winner. I didn't know Jennys fell until it was announced, and I was on the rail.

Posted by: Sandie at August 21, 2006 12:34 AM

A moment of respect or a moment of silence for the injured horse. That gives people a moment to say a quick prayer if they are inclined. Or just a moment of respect for the horse injured. But I think it needs to be said at the track by the announer in case people didn't realize there was an injury!

    My prayers got to Jenny!!

Posted by: Sally in Key West at August 21, 2006 12:37 AM

It seems obvious that LITF connections are keeping this very low key. I'm not surprised.
While we all love him and want news, this is a private time for them.
The best we can do is say prayers for them during this terrible ordeal.

Posted by: ShelleyA at August 21, 2006 12:37 AM

Didn't get a chance to watch the race, but I honestly don't know if I can do that yet.

Hope that Jenny will be okay.

Alex, I have to say once again that you are beyond great. You''ve provided us with up to the minute news on our baby, interesting info, and you've set up a great forum. so here's a MWAH for you too!

I hurt for The Fog and his people. Such a beautiful horse, and from all accounts, an exemplary one.

Heyyyy babycakes, did you have a good day today?
I heard you were going to have visitors and I know that must've pleased you. A nice massage would round out the day for you wouldn't it, sweetie?

Have a good night with lots of restful sleep, lots of carrot and studmuffin dreams. I'll be in here early tomorrow to check on you.

Who loves ya babycakes? WE DO!! Hugs and scratchies MWAH!

Posted by: Toby at August 21, 2006 12:38 AM

Maybe if the tracks did this people would be more concerned about the animals themselves instead of the money they are winning or losing.

I think it would be a great thing - maybe bring track safetly up a notch!

I feel out of the loop for the last several days. Spent Friday night in the ER due to an accident with a yucca plant and my left eye. All is well now, but had to use ointment and rest my eyes. Poor LITF. My heart goes out to him and his connections.

I found the following article on Lost in the Fog (sorry if it's a duplicate) talks about his trainer, etc.,

    http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/15318132.htm

Lost in the Fog to make final trip home to California

    *************
"Harry's a tough old guy," Gilchrist said after breaking the news to Aleo. "But this is bringing him to his knees."

    *****************
Last year, the Travers was won by Flower Alley, but the day was won by Lost in the Fog.

Racing in the King's Bishop on the Travers Day undercard, the then-unbeaten 3-year-old colt with the modest connections and the impeccable credentials was the people's horse. Fans wore Lost in the Fog hats, carried handmade signs and lined the paddock railing to snap pictures or just get a glimpse of the smallish bay colt whose only mission in life was to run like blazes.

The word that Lost in the Fog is dying with a rare form of cancer was made even more poignant by his trainer Greg Gilchrist's decision to bring the colt home from the University of California-Davis veterinary school, about an hour's van ride from his base at Golden Gate Fields near San Francisco.

"I'm a little selfish," said Gilchrist, understandably emotional about losing a horse of a lifetime after more than 30 years in the business. "I wanted to bring him back."

Voted the champion sprinter last year despite losing to Silver Train in the Breeders' Cup Sprint, Lost in the Fog was found to have a massive tumor under his spine after exploratory surgery Friday to determine if cancer had spread from a recently discovered tumor in his spleen.

Rather than make the immediate decision to have him euthanized in a sterile and foreign environment, Gilchrist said he will let Lost in the Fog live a pampered last few days surrounded by the people who have cared for him all his life before having him put to sleep with a fatal injection.

One other notable racehorse, the influential stallion Bold Ruler (sire of Secretariat) was euthanized after battling throat cancer at age 17. Cancer is so unusual in horses that UC-Davis is the only veterinary school in the country with a comprehensive equine oncology program, but Lost in the Fog was taken there only by coincidence, since Gilchrist had originally thought last week that the colt was experiencing a mild bout of colic.

The local hero gained a national following thanks to a carefully crafted cross-country campaign that saw Lost in the Fog race in Arizona, Florida and Kentucky as well as California and New York. His owner, crusty 86-year-old San Francisco businessman Harry Aleo, resisted the temptation to race his short-distance specialist in the Triple Crown races, and also rejected numerous offers to buy the Florida-bred colt.

"Harry's a tough old guy," Gilchrist said after breaking the news to Aleo. "But this is bringing him to his knees."

One of the horsemen who came into contact with the Fog crew during his New York trips was especially sympathetic.

"They shipped into our barn for the Breeders' Cup at Belmont (last fall) and we got to be friendly with Greg Gilchrist and some of his team," said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who nearly beat Lost in the Fog with Egg Head in last year's Riva Ridge on Belmont Stakes Day. "You just feel terrible for anybody who goes through such a thing."

McLaughlin went through it himself. Not long after Egg Head missed by just over a length in the Riva Ridge, the horse _in which he was a part-owner - developed a hock infection and subsequently foundered and had to be euthanized.

    Team Barbaro!

I have just gotten a voice mail from Gallant Secret's connections giving me their permission to go ahead with "Barbaro's Dream/Champion Heart". I will also figure out a way to send copies to the Jacksons, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado, Dr R (I think that's all the real people I used in the story.). Again, I want everybody's permission before going any further. Its the least I can do.

I'm stunned...just stunned. I'm going to call them back tomorrow after I've gotten some sleep and am sure I won't burst into tears talking to her. SHe sounds like such a sweet lady...OMG...OMG...

And to think Barbaro and Gallant Secret and all the other humans mentioned above were my inspiration.

I wish I had the words to express how I'm feeling right now. But between the exhaustion and emotion of this weekend and now this phone message, my mind is totally fried.

I am so grateful to all the beautiful horse and human souls I have "met" over the last 3 months - and for all that I have learned.

Back to watching "Ivan the Terrible" - not the greatest bedtime viewing, but I've wanted to own this movie since the 1970's.

    Good Night, Barbaromaniacs.

    Lyn G -

I so so THRILLED that you have heard from Gallant Secret's "mom". I have been so concerned about your not hearing, and worried that maybe we had projected a connection that did not exist. But how NOT, with that absolutely stunning, beautiful, sensitive face...

I hope there will be more you can relate to us after talking with her - I am sure we are all just thirsty to hear every word about her beginnings, her relationships, her training, her final days, even, although that may be too hard.

Please, please let her know how much we care about Gallant Secret - we still have candles burning for her, and she represents much more than a simple statistic - just like our Barbaro, who has been raising consciousness around the nation and the world.

For those people new to this board who have never seen Gallant Secret, you may access Barbara Livingston's photo of her back in Barbaro Update 18.

Lyn, this story is going to be stunning!

Before I sign out tonite, I want to thank all you wonderful ladies for sending your good thoughts and wishes to my boy, Zeke. He is such a sweet, sweet boy...a true tender heart, who loves to run.

I am so sickened by the image of him limping home, scared and in pain..looking for me.

In the chaos of our upcoming move, someone left our back gate open. Basically, that's all it takes for that boy to go running. It was just such a stupid mistake. My heart just brakes for him right now.

At the ER he was a very good boy, and the docs xrayed him from head to toe, took blood readings, checked all reflexes...the whole nine yards. Thankfully, there was no other injury, but his leg was broken. The doctor was very incouraging and we were told it was the "best possible bone to break in that situation". It will require surgery and hopefully the ortho doc will do that tomorrow.

We were able to bring him home with us after the doc cast his leg. He is on pain meds, obviously, and trying to rest.

He is such a trooper...and the love of my life. I am so incredibly grateful and realize how lucky we were today. Things could have been much worse...I can't believe how fortunate we are. I realize I could have lost him today. I recieved Gods blessings today.
We have his littermate, Lily, who is standing guard over her brother now. She was so bumbed out when we got home, tho...she thought she got jipped out of a car ride...knucklehead. She's so funny.

This place has become more than I could ever have imagined. Friendships have been born, and I am very aware tonite how good it is when people who love animals come together in love and unity.
I feel your love and care. I appreciate all of you. I know you all understand what it is to love your animals, and the people who keep them.

Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for keeping Zeke Boy in your thoughts and prayers.

I am so grateful for this.

Goodnite, all you good people...I love you all.

Slumber well, Bobby. We need you, too.

My congratulations to the winners today; Lava Man from humble beginnings really put to rest the rumbles that he hadn't faced really good horses in his other CA wins. Siren Lure is another big winner at Del Mar today and may go for the Breeder's Cup Sprint based on his performance - he was another claimer for $50,000 like Lava Man. I love these unexpected success stories (who didn't like Cinderella??), but I have to admit my heart was with Perfect Drift.

Barbaro, you are there with me, every race I watch. Your spirit is so strong, your presence is everywhere. I am so proud of you, and so blessed to have you in my life. We're there for you, we'll give you a hand, we'll give you a push, we'll give you a baby carrot - whatever you need, let it be there.

Lost in the Fog is here back home, and we continue to pray for another miracle... He has come home with attitude, which fills me with pride and hope. He has many people who love him, too.

Bless you all, family, and sleep well, Bobby. You have a great week ahead with all your old friends, grazin' on the grass!

Having not read through the earlier posts today, I am now saddened to hear about Zeke, and am so happy he is in good hands. My heart is always in my throat with my dogs, and cats, and with any animal I see on the street without an owner. I have been known to stop traffic on the freeway to get a dog off - I couldn't believe I was doing it, holding up my hand to cars and a big semi - which slowed and stopped, through divine intervention, I think... When an animal needs you, it seems you go into that other zone where you lose emotion and just get very calm inside, finding strength to do what needs to be done.

So I will, also, be praying for Zeke's full and complete recovery. He'll be running around before you know it, acting like nothing happened with that cast on his leg! (with the help of all these candles). I'll second Susan - arnica is great for the trauma, bruising and soreness.

And Jennys on the Radio - what a beautiful name. It just couldn't be that we could get through another day of racing without another name, and the vision of her head looking out the ambulance window... We'll pray for, please, good news for her and her connections.

Believe in Miracles. Believe in Barbaro.

    FOR SUSAN E:

    You posted:

Linnie--Black Sabbath (with Ozzie Osbourne). music.yahoo.com/track/1265075 Heavy metal classic, excellent song to play when you really need to pound a beer bottle on a table. Or something. Bet you recognize it when you hear it.

OUCH!!! So sorry, Susan, but I wouldn't know this song if I fell over it ... TWICE! I HATE heavy metal, classic or not ... I HATE Ozzy Osbourne and I HATE Black Sabbath. I have never, ever watched or played any heavy metal song in my life. LOL ... in fact, I think the 'heaviest' song I ever did listen to was "In a gadda da vida" (sp?) by Iron Butterfly and "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin ... AND I had to just do a search to find out the name of the group because I completely forgot! But that's about as 'hard rock' as I ever ever got, so, no, I wouldn't recognize "Iron Man" or anything by this group ever at all. LOLOLOL ... Just the thought of chickens heads being bitten off onstage and other horrible, sadistic things done with snakes, bats and other 'creatures' makes me want to run as far away from heavy metal as I can get!!

I love Sinatra, Neil Diamond, The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Lennon, Billy Joel, Elton John, Johnny Cash, DooWop, U2, and a whole bunch of others but nothing even comes close to heavy metal.

But, thanks for letting me know ...at least I will probably never forget that "Iron Man" was done by Ozzy and Black Sabbath! Yuk!!! LOLOL

Posted by: Linnie at August 21, 2006 2:20 AM

No can tell my about Ladina? Where did she run? Does Michael still have her? Because I didn't get a watch for her telling me she was running.

Personally I think it would be nice to have a moment of silence or a prayer before EACH race, not just when a horse is injured. Maybe then the betting public would get it...that these horses and jockies are putting their lives on the line every time the gate opens!

If it's ok to have public prayer at football, baseball and basketball games as well as car races, why NOT horse races?

Prayers to Zeke, Jennie, Kate and Malcolm!!

Good to know The Fog is home and apparently feeling okay for now. I hope he has a long, long time with his connections to be pampered, loved, and just be a horse.

    ##############
Linnie, sorry, didn't mean to upset you! I just got Lava Man's name in my head to the Iron Man tune and it refused to leave, UNTIL you mentioned Inagaddadavida, which is now stuck in my head. Again. That happens a lot.

Posted by: Susan E. at August 21, 2006 2:32 AM

Joyce, it is NOT ok to have public prayers. The ACLU has effectively destroyed that. They don't even like moments of silence.

Nothing on Jennys yet, but oh, this is wonderful!

"Naify on Mission to Rescue Father's Horses
    Date Posted: 8/18/2006 7:43:22 PM
    Last Updated: 8/19/2006 9:51:02 PM

    (from Del Mar track notes)
Longtime horse owner Marsha Naify is on a mission these days – to find horses that were either bred or owned by her late father, Marshall Naify, claim and retire them.
She fulfilled part of that mission on Monday at Del Mar when she claimed I've Decided, a 9-year-old gelded son of Bertrando, for $10,000. She then turned the horse over to Wendy Ohrt, a former racetrack exercise rider who works to retrain horses as steeplechasers or just riding horses.

Her father, who bred and raced horses as 505 Farms, bred I've Decided. His sire, Bertrando, was a multiple grade I stakes winner for 505 Farms, including the 1993 Pacific Classic (gr. I).

"I heard the horse was running on Monday and I asked Bruce Headley to claim him for me," Naify said. Headley trains horses for Naify, including Surf Cat, whom she owns with Aase Headley.

"I really believe in keeping track of horses my father bred or raced and I want to make sure they get a nice home after they are retired from the track," said Naify, who has homes in Long Beach and Del Mar.

Last year, she claimed High Wire Act, another winner for 505, out of a race at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia and had him retired to Ohrt's care.

okay, I'm not quite shut down yet..

odd that a 'civil LIBERTIES' union would work against the liberties of everyone to 'protect' them.

A moment of silence is actually quite harmless- and each individual can use it as they choose- prayer, making out a grocery list, simply enjoying the quiet..whatever.

so many things in our great country just get taken too an extreme that winds up being damaging, rather than beneficial.

We envy you... hope you will come back with new stories and insights which you will share with us. It's terrific to have a knowledgeable eye on the inside or the backside who's willing to share.

Have fun (or does that mean we'll have to take up a collection for you on your return???).

To All who have posted in my Barbaro Book. I finally got the chance to get back in the book and all of your notes in there are beautiful. Love the pic of Bobby and Michael. I hope the website is sending you copies of what you wrote cause I won't be able to do that until I close the book and that's not going to be until Bobby is out of the hospital. All of you truly shown your love. Keep writing...got 32 pages already...I would like to have another 100 plus being it is going to the Jacksons and all involved in his life.
    Keep them coming!!!!

I think moments of silence are still accepted, at least in gatherings I have been at in the not too distant past. It's true that passing laws that protect people from being offended, like banishing prayer from public meetings, could be counter productive. After all we don't want so many laws that our culture becomes bland and boring like a bad mac hamburger and people become passion-less. Passion is good, prayer is good, being ALIVE is good!

I was raised Catholic but it seems Buddhism, Hinduism, the Quakers, etc. offer interesting insights. The Dalai Lama says, all beings, including animals are part of the devine.

Hope I haven't over-stepped. If so, please email me at: bmacraith@humboldt1.com

May you abide in peace Sweet Barbaro!

Mike - Huge week at Saratoga... Saturday will be a big day, too bad you couldn't, uh, break a leg (no, never mind, no broken legs at the track, please) and find an excuse to stay there through Saturday.

But we're rely on you for tidbits on the big kids for the Travers. Maybe you could write us a book, Horse Sweat and Tears.

    TO SUSAN E:

Thanks for posting the bloodlines/lineage/pedigree for Radio Star ... with all of that 'blue royal blood' in her, she's gonna be just fine. She comes from great stock, and of course, I saw my "Big Red" in there as well, along with SomethingRoyal who was Secretariat's mama!!

    TRAVERS OUTLOOK...

Bluegrass Cat will humiliate Bernardini,,,,unless it comes up paceless, but I can't see Pletcher letting that happen. He'll send a rabbit.

    Mike C.
I have a book that is online, not one I am personally writing. The book I have is called In Celebration of Barbaro...Our Hero.
I cannot take the credit for it. I can only take credit for creating it.
This book is just for anyone who wants to to write their messages to Bobby, the Jacksons, Dr. Dean, NBC, Michael, Peter, Edgar, Alex, Tim and Melissa just reminded me to include Eduardo.
I will buy the original and give it to the Jacksons and copies to all involved in Bobby recovery as a personal thank you from me to them.
I wish you much luck with your book and I would love to read it when published.
    Keep me posted.

PLEASE include "the call" in you work..either as it's released or in whole, your choice.

Hope you're right about Bluegrass Cat ... I really like him!!

Bonnie...Alex posted the link in the updates on Friday. Otherwise, I would need everyone's emails so I can invite them to write.
Like I said...this book is for all involved and I hope to get many pages to show our love of Bobby.

the site is www.celebrateahero.com and the book id is 428640. You can click on the invited guest tab and see if you can get into the book....

    Mary L,

Thank you for the info on

    THE TINY URL

That should help clean up the board, and I for one am happy to learn of this amazing technical feat of which I was unaware... We are all learning more than a little something here, some of us more than others, LOL.

Posted by: Shelley in CA at August 21, 2006 4:14 AM

Moment of respect... No bagpipes playing "Amazing Grace." Or trumpet playing "Taps."

Maybe a simple, straightforward "Please join in a moment of respect for [horse name] We wish him/her a safe and speedy recovery."

Boom, done. Not the least "prayer-like" or funerial. Pure FTD bouquets. But nice.

Still no news from Saratoga. Assume that is good. Peace to all and to all a good night -- Susan in Saratoga

Posted by: Susan H at August 21, 2006 4:14 AM

Thanks Sharonlynn, I'll give it a try.

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at August 21, 2006 4:16 AM

Mike C: best of luck at Saratoga, and with your book!

Like your early analysis of the Travers, too.

Posted by: TerryL at August 21, 2006 4:16 AM

Now THAT's the kind of insight we like, no frilly language, just straight "...fake Jim Dandy race" says it all.

Posted by: Shelley in CA at August 21, 2006 4:18 AM

Mike C. Thanks for allowing me to post the call in the book. I won't put anything in it unless I have permission from the author. If you would like, you can run a continuous page of your works for Bobby in the book, unless you would prefer me to add any. But, being everyone is going to have copies of the book, I think it is more meaningful coming from your writing. Also, any photos can be added.

Thanks, when I get back I'll take care of it...

    WHAT BOOK?

Posted by: mike c at August 21, 2006 4:28 AM

    Mike C.
ya know we don't like BB too much...But you really thing TP will send a rabbit? (how is that for cryptic)Todd does not seem the type.
For those new horsemen ...a rabbit is a front runner who burns the pace in 22 seconds..when your other horse is holding back. You burn the rabbit out...then go.
now I made us look really good............

Don't think a rabbit will be necessary. I think Blue Grass Cat will win it without one.

Seen enough of BGC to know he is maturing. It almost kills me to think what our Boy would be like now.

    Always,
    Susan

    Hello all:

Here is a very sweet article from Sunday's (Albany) New York Times Union -- and interview with Greg Gilchrist, Foggy's trainer.

    http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=509870&category=SPORTS&newsdate=8/20/2006&TextPage=2

Heartfelt thoughts and prayers to The Fog and his connections.

Continued thanks and best wishes for Barbaro and his wonderful recovery!

Thanks, as always, to Alex, Tim, Dr. R, the Jacksons, the Matzes, Edgar P, and everyone.

I feel guilty being so joyful at Barbaro's progress, and yet knowing what heartache those who love Lost in the Fog are suffering. Did a little reserch this afternoon and came up with the following information: UC Davis Vet. Med. School and Vet. Med. Hospital have the best Vet. Oncology Dept. in the U.S. They also have the Center for Equine Health, which is one of the best "horse health" facilities in the U.S.

If after making a donation to the Barbaro Fund, you have any spare cash, a donation to UC Davis CEH in honor of LITF would probably be MOST appreciated.

The address and phone number are:
    Center for Equine Health,
    School of Veterinary Medicine,
    University of California,
    One Shields Avenue,
    Davis, CA 95616-8589;
    (530) 752-6433; or e-mail to:
    cehwebmaster@ucdavis.edu,
And for more detailed information, their website is:
    www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ceh ...

Keep both horses in your thoughts and prayers.

So happy (continuously Kvelling Mit Nachas) over how wonderfully Barbaro is doing. LOVED Sabina's photo of him trying to scratch with his right hind, putting full weight on left. The new Sabina photo gallery, which Alex (thank you!) linked, is absolutely priceless. Some shots, like that one, I've seen nowhere else.

Speaking of horses who did not finish races today - I was watching TVG "Racing Across America" today before the Big Race that Lava Man won (what a great run that was!) and was dismayed that in the 2nd at Arlington, not one but TWO horses pulled up during the race, and NOT A WORD was said except during the call when they respectively pulled up. Our Memento pulled up at the quarter pole, and Big Applet [sp?] at the turn for home.

I went to the TVG website and got a phone number, talked to a nice young lady who checked, couldn't find anything, and took my number. She did call me back a little while later, to confirm who pulled up at what point, and said there was no further information. I kept watching TVG until the big race came on, on ESPN2, and NOT A WORD by the TVG staff about what became of either of those horses who pulled up in the 2nd at Arlington.

I waited until I had read ALL today's posts, to see if anyone else had noted this, and saw nothing about it. Anybody have any info on this? Far as I know neither horse went down, the phrase was "pulled up," but no news whether either or both were vanned out, taken for medical care, NO INFO AT ALL. Not even an acknowledgement at any time after that race.

Some more respect than this needs to be afforded here.

I am glad that LITF is home for the duration.

For the last several hours I've been watching the William Shatner Roast on Comedy Central, which is running over and over. Pretty funny stuff. (He is a big horselover.)

Some glitch with my computer keeps me from going to the forum or the chat, so I apologize if anybody would rather I be somewhere other than here.

    Alex, you are a phenomenon.

    Dear Dr. Bobby,

Bobby, sleep peacefully in velvety dreamscapes of green grass, golden straw of late summer, and blue skies.

I wish for you that someone is always eagerly waiting to spoil you with welcome and unexpected acts of kindness, a massage, a scratch rub and brush, candy and carrots, maybe just a head butt and an admirer's deep soul gaze into those wizened eyes of yours.

It must be different to be *constantly* around the humans, like chimps on the other side of the bars, so openly on display. You got the radio playing, chinking computer keyboards and clicking mice, the telephone, the smell of coffee, the crunch of snacks.

Everyone says how smart you are as a patient, and they may suspect but dare not speak how naked they may feel exposed by your keen appreciations of a human's nature.

A sure sign of superior intelligence is the ploy of 'playing dumb', which you are it is said to be masterful.

    So sleep sweet prince.

Bobby, before you got to Bolton, I was feeling a need to see a shrink. But these little chats have really helped me, no I'm not kidding. I was wondering what you would like me to do for you, just say the word, it would be a pleasure to return the favor.

    Love you so much, Bobby.
