    Barbaro Updates: 58

    updates are now here.

Update 554: Horsetalk from New Zealand continues to be one of the most persistant online sites with Barbaro updates: Barbaro injuries highlight need for laminitis research. Again they cited this site re: yesterday's cast change. If you look at their homepage Barbaro has his own section of the site. Awesome!

Update 553: Just spoke to Peter Brette, and while he was unable to visit Barbaro today he had heard from Michael who had visited, and all remains well. He also noted that Round Pond appeared to come out of yesterday's fine effort in good shape.

An interesting poll question has been posed on the discussion board: Have you started watching more horseracing because of Barbaro?.

Update 552: Thank you Cecil Whig for the lovely front page article: Online outpouring of support for Barbaro.

I asked Michael this morning if Dr. Richardson had finally gone away for a few days (this was after Michael had given me the morning report). Michael said he had, and he also said he had told Dr. Richardson that given he was away on vacation there really was no need for the morning updates. They then wondered a little about what I would do ? So I guess (and HOPE) Dr. Richardson will still be calling in the reports!

Finally, something I had meant to get to for a little while, Mercy T. had a great idea to support Mike Rea, it is posted on the discussion board: A Barbarian Response to MikeRea's Letter. All feedback and support would obviously be welcome!

Update 551: Dave Wallace (Tom Albertrani's assistant) just called to give us a quick update on Bernardini. A few things about the Travers itself. When they were leading Bernardini over for the Travers he was very cool, calm and collected. Dave said it was very impressive to see considering his youth and all the attention he was getting. After the Travers, leaving the test barn (all winners and some other runners are tested after a race to check for drugs etc.) he was bouncing and was very full of himself, as Dave noted, just proud of himself. Dave also mentioned Bernardini's reaction to Javier Castellano's light tap of the whip with his left hand ... which caused Bernardini to swish his tail and pin his ears, almost as if Bernardini was wondering what the problem was since he was winning so easily at that point! (I think I noted something similar in my update directly after the race.)

Anyway, Dave said he has come out of the race in great shape. He will hand walk around the shedrow for a few days (probably about three days) before he goes back to the track and starts training again. I will plan to follow up with Dave later in the week to see how he is progressing.

Update 550: New Bolton Center's press release concerning yesterday's cast change: Barbaro has cast change:

Veterinarians at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital changed the right hind leg cast of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro yesterday, Sunday, August 27. "The cast was changed because there was a small crack in it," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "Based on new radiographs that were taken, the leg looked excellent under the cast. The pastern joint looks completely fused, and there is only a small area in the long pastern bone that has a little farther to go before we take him out of the cast completely."

In addition, the radiographs showed that there were no signs of infection. The cast change took place under general anesthesia, and Barbaro had another successful pool recovery before returning to his stall.

The colt's left hind foot has laminitis, but Barbaro seems comfortable with that foot as well. The bandage on the left hind foot continues to be changed daily.

According to Dr. Richardson: "Barbaro is bright and happy this morning with an excellent appetite."

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, September 5 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 549: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (sunday night). Just spoke to Michael Matz behind the gate. He said that everything looked good after the cast change yesterday. He expressed that everyone seemed happy with Bobby's progress.
    updated monday 8:15am

Update 548: The New York Times has the following article: Bernardini and Barbaro: A Rivalry That Wasn't that does a nice job of highlighting both horses' accomplishments without make sweeping statements on who is the better. I also like the note of comparison with Cigar from Tom Albertani. He should know as he is closely connected to both horses. I think that comparison just illustrates that this year we have been blessed with superb 3yos.

A quick recap from the races yesterday. We know Round Pond was a very close second, here is another report: Promenade Girl wins Molly Pitcher. Stormy Kiss (Jackson owned, Tagg trained) was third in the Ballerina: Dubai Escapade takes Ballerina and George Washington (Jackson bred) was third O'BRIEN UPBEAT DESPITE GEORGE DEFEAT after a slow start.

Next weekend we will focus on the Woodward at Saratoga. Funny Cide is scheduled to run, he breezed 5/8ths in 1:00 in preparation for the race last thursday: Funny Cide Preps for Woodward With Bullet Work, an excerpt:

"I thought the track was slow, but safe," Tagg said. "He really worked well over it. I thought it was a serious workout for him. But we wanted to be safe with him because he's going to run for big money next Saturday."

I am not sure when this morning's Barbaro update will occur. If Dr. Richardson is indeed on vacation it may be a little later, but he may well still be providing Michael his morning update, I just don't know.

    Comments

Good Morning Alex and team Barbaro,

Understanding that the update will probably be later, I'll not worry but will check back periodically during the morning.

    ########
To Everyone - please keep all of us Floridian members of team Barbaro in your prayers. It looks like all of us (no matter where in the state we are) are going to get hit by Ernesto. Along with that, please also pray that the horses are kept safely too. I always worry about them. I know that many horse owners have too many horses to evacuate.

Here's a lovely article about George Washington...

    http://sport.independent.co.uk/general/article1222264.ece

"So far, so good, but perhaps too good. For as the stalls opened, George Washington, the 5-6 favourite, forgot that he was a racehorse and stood still, Hamlet-style."

You had to see it...it was a gem of a moment!
And it's nice to see that Aidan O'Brien couldn't be happier with him :-)

Good Morning all ye' Bobby Heads!!!

Dee, I am so happy to hear about Chief! What wonderful news. The power of prayer is a beautiful thing.
Best of luck to Chief for a complete recovery!

Barbaro, have a great day...hope you don't miss the good doc too much. I wonder who will get to graze you today??? Maybe Pamela, or Sally? You are a lucky boy!

Too sad about BGC. Hope he wasn't/isn't in too much pain. Should he have run in the Travers?
    I wonder.

Have a wonderful day everyone, and as always, thank you Alex for a wonderful place to come and learn and to be with friends.

    Good Morning Barbaromaniacs!!

Bernardini will probably win the Eclispe award for hte best 3 year old this year, and that is fine he is a beartiful gear horse (that would have been beaten by Barbaro in my opinion).

However, Barbaro's place in history is very secure. Did you know that he is one of only six horses that went into the Kentucky Derby undeated and came out undefeated? That is totaly amazing!! BTW the other five are Smarty Jones, Seattle Slew, Majestic Prince, Morvich, and Regret. I also sent back and reread some of the the coverage of the Kentucky Derby. I didn't realized that Barbaro stumbled almost to his knees coming out of the gate and still won by the biggest margin in decades in a field of 20 horses that was the best group of 3year olds in years. Yes, Barbaro will never be forgotten for what he did on the race track.

He may not get the Eclispe award this year, but here are some awards would get:

Horse who gives the best hugs
Horse with most websites dedicated to him
    Most beloved
    Most famous worldwide
    Most courageous
    Most inspiring
    Most influential
Horse with most videos made of him (on & off the track)

I have left off the human connections on purpose because I'm very respectful of all hourse owners, trainers, exercise riders, jockeys, and grooms.

Please have fun adding to this list.

Barbaro - have a great great healing day. Try not to miss Dr R too much! Love and hugs

Sally, Barbara, Janice, and all Floridians:

I used to live in Georgia and would see all the evacations during hurricanes, what a pain. If you need to evacute there is a Community College in Tifton, GA, about 60 miles north of the Florida border Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, ABAC." I believe it is exit 64, if not, you can ask how to get there. Tell them you were told to evacute and they will assist you.

If you have pets, you can e-mail me and I will try to get some of my friends to assist you with them.

I will continue to check my e-mail, just in the need arises.

Jo, I agree with you. Totally understand that Dr. R may not be calling in, but I need to know the big guy is ok.

Posted by: mary at August 28, 2006 11:59 AM

Great to see all the positive updates! Came in from the Travers this a.m. and at work by 7 (whew). What a great weekend, with great horses in a beautiful location - one thing missing - BARBARO. However, Barbaro was alive and well and talked about consistently all weekend by MANY folks at the Travers....Bluegrass Cat was obviously not well at the race. He looked terrible going into the gate, tired and aggitated. Again, Bernadini had not much to run against (don't get me going on this topic) and with BGC suffering a fractured pastern, it was amazing to watch the 2nd place finish - that horse has the heart of champion....Met many great folks this weekend - horse racing is definitely an incredible sport and avenue for some fine folks. Can't wait until my horses race starting next month!

Prayers to Barbaro and all other horses and folks who need them today....

    Good morning Everyone and Barbaro,

Gee, I am really hoping that maybe Dr R was able to simply put a smaller cast or a leg brace type of support on you now. I bet you would really like to have that itchy thing off after 3 months. You be careful Mister. Your mom and your Pals Michael and Peter will be with you this week. You play nice with all of your nurses and keep eating and practice walking around slowly.

Anxiously awaiting official news on your recent cast and pictures of your bones.

    Have a great day everyone.

    ANC!

Sally, whether it's wise to stay or not totally depends on the storm, how big, exactly where and how hard it hits...and those are factors that aren't always known before it's too late to evacuate.

Be careful, kiddo. Evacuating stinks, but it's better than some of the alternatives.

    BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!!

Our very own Alex was FRONT PAGE NEWS in my local paper (The Cecil Whig) today. He was there in living color in front of his laptop, and on page A-2 he was on a horse.

The article was about how this site has grown since before Bobby's terrible accident. Alex said back in the day this site got a whopping 6 hits per day. Today Alex said we get about 12,000. He said that we actually crashed the site early on as the server could not handle the traffic.

AND OUR VERY OWN SUSANW was in the article. Alex quoted her and also quoted one of our poets. I am going to mail Susan (Anela to me) a copy of the paper today.

    Cheers Alex!

I came across the following article (please pass by if already read) that was posted in the SI.com on 8/24/06.

    What could've been . . .
As Barbaro fights for life, Matz reflects on fateful day

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/tim_layden/08/24/barbaro.update/

On Tuesday evening, trainer Michael Matz sat down at his home in rural Pennsylvania and watched the Preakness. It had been a while since he'd seen a rerun of the May 20 race in which his Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro, was pulled up by jockey Edgar Prado 15 seconds into the race with multiple fractures in his lower right hind leg.

That was a long, sad day, beginning in cool sunlight at Pimlico and ending in darkness at an animal hospital in Pennsylvania, where began the battle to save Barbaro's life. It was a day that took its place in racing lore, alongside those days when Ruffian and Go For Wand went down and sent the entire racing community into a funk that hasn't fully lifted.

What's more, Matz's wife, D.D., couldn't stomach watching replays of the Preakness, in which Barbaro is seen clearly distressed and confused, the lower part of his injured leg flopping inertly. "She doesn't want to see it ever again,'' said Matz. But D.D. was away for a week with the family's four kids, leaving Michael alone. So he watched.

"I wanted to see if something happened, if anything happened,'' Matz said. "I couldn't see anything. I think he just took a bad step. That's what I thought then, and that's what it still looked like.''

There was a pause on the other end of the phone line. I could picture Matz holding the cell phone to his jawbone. Matz shouted something at his barn workers about raking the barn area properly, the kind of thing you hear a trainer shout a dozen times a day.

I thought about Preakness Day, when I saw Matz a couple of hours before the race. He talked about having sent Barbaro out for a pre-dawn gallop. "He needed that gallop,'' Matz said, brimming with confidence.

Now he started talking again. "The morning of that race,'' Matz said. "I thought they might as well have handed me the trophy right there. He was a such a great horse and he was so ready to run.''

    Another pause.

"Maybe I had him too ready that day,'' says Matz. "I don't think I made a mistake; I think I had him in good condition. But when something like this happens, you second-guess yourself. It's only human.''

It was a theory that railbirds who couldn't help themselves floated in the aftermath of Barbaro's injury. The strapping colt had raced lightly. The Preakness was only his fourth start in 139 days. Maybe he wasn't seasoned enough. This was the same rationale that handicappers applied before the Derby, which Barbaro won by a comical six lengths. It's all nonsense. Nobody knows why Barbaro's leg snapped in the Pimlico loam. It just did. Horses are big animals with small limbs. Still, Matz beats himself up because he is only human.

He visits Barbaro every day at the New Bolton Center and changes the bandages on the colt's left hind leg, the one afflicted with laminitis, a disease that arose in July and poses the greatest threat to Barbaro's survival. Barbaro recently got outside his stall to graze, his first time in the sunlight since the Preakness. It was a major step in the horse's recovery, but doesn't alleviate the one element that most cuts at Matz.

"Every time I walk into his stall,'' says Matz, "he looks at me like he wants to do something.'' Much like he stood on the Pimlico track, confused that his jockey had stopped him, shocked that his body had betrayed him. Now Barbaro wants to run again. Which he will never do.

This weekend the racing world turns its attention to Saratoga, where Preakness winner Bernardini will try to assume leadership of the 3-year-old division with a victory in the Travers. After Barbaro's Kentucky Derby win, many handicappers and veteran horsemen predicted that his combination of cruising speed and stamina would carry him to the Triple Crown. Perhaps easily.

But consensus shifts quickly in the horse business. Even as Barbaro fought for his life after the Preakness, some handicappers suggested that he would not have beaten Bernardini in the Preakness. We'll never know. The underlying tragedy of Barbaro's injury is the loss of competition, which is the essence of racing and, indeed, of sport. Imagine if Bernardini had beaten a healthy Barbaro in the Preakness and then Barbaro had come back to win the Belmont Stakes. What a race the Travers would be.

Matz is a competitor, a three-time Olympic equestrian. "It hurts to be standing on the sideline,'' he says. "I wish I could send Barbaro out there to run. I can't, and I have to accept that we were lucky to have him as long as we did.''

Matz has other horses in the barn, including unraced 2-year-old colts by Came Home, Cherokee Run and Seeking The Gold. "Nice colts, but if you're asking me about my Triple Crown chances, compared to him,'' Matz said, letting out a loud laugh, "well, it looks like I'm in trouble.''

He will run a horse on Saturday at Saratoga, amidst the ancient elm trees and all the history that a track can muster. Then he will watch the Travers, because he always enjoys watching good racehorses in a big race. Although on this day, probably not as much as usual.

    Hi, gang,

Thanks to Alex, et al for this site. It's great to get breaking news faster than other news outlets are able to broadcast it. On the topic of journalism--two things:

I would guess that there was no one in the publications/public relations office at NBC yesterday to do a press release. This would indicate that everyone felt the cast change was going to be uneventful. I'm looking for a release at the NBC page later today.

The Cecil Whig is trying to give its "dead tree edition" a circulation boost by not putting the story about Alex on their website until tomorrow. Probably they do this with all their news /features etc. I just wonder how many extra hits they will get for this story today and tomorrow ;) Think we'll crash their server?

Have a great day, Barbaro. Floridians, take care.

Alex, really like the way you are posting articles of other interest like Bernardini, Funny Cide, Round Pond and updates on LITF, just to name a few.

You are able to obtain details and information directly from the 'horse's mouth' so-to-speak and put a 'real' spin on the world of horse racing. So much of what I read is from outsiders looking in and is far too critical of one horse or the other.

So keep up the good work. So glad Bobby has made it through another cast change and that Dr. Dean feels comfortable enough with his condition that he can take a few days of R & R. He certainly deserves it.

If anyone deserves a little downtime, it's you. So take time for yourself. We'll all be here no matter what!

Keeping my fingers crossed that the sonograms show that LITF is beating the odds.

    Have a great week all!

Grateful, relieved and KVELLING MIT NACHAS for another comfortable night on the way to that clear path out of the woods. As I've said before and will undoubtedly say again, for me, the Continuing Miracle Whose Name Is Barbaro is buffer enough re all the other stuff. LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH.

########### I apologize in advance to those who would prefer I post non-Barbaro material such as what follows, elsewhere; I am unable to negotiate to either the forum or the chat that Alex has so kindly set up, so I am "stuck" here and have something I want to share with this particular venue.

Before I wound up on this site in the wake of P day, the only inkling I (and maybe others reading this) had about other people feeling as I do about animals, came from interacting with vets, and the horsepeople I know from the barn, and last but far from least - from watching Animal Planet (standard cable, I believe, and channel 282 on direcTV). As further buffer against all the troubling stuff, I still find solace in the success stories on such shows as Emergency Vets and the multitude of "Animal Rescue" rype regular shows - most notably because of the portrayal of real people who daily make a difference in the lives of animals. Other people to whom it is NOT "just" a cat, dog, horse, iguana or rat. I am not alone.

Last night there were two back-to-back hours on Animal Planet that kept me from watching "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy". First, "Jane Goodall's Heroes" with her hosting, highlighting and honoring [and rewarding, with $ grants from Animal Planet] five animal rescuers/activists around the world who are striving to study and save and educate us about and preserve habitat for diverse kinds of dwindling if not endangered species. The portrayal of these people, and hearing her talk about how they share her passion, is really worth watching. That was followed by an hour of Katrina Reunions (from point of view of animal rescue heroes involved in reuniting animals with their people). Depicted a few of the many local organizations that stepped up to care for the countless critters in need. And those reunions! The best. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. ANYWAY, I'm sure these shows will be re-running on AP and I urge everyone reading this, to try to watch both of these programs (and recommend them to your friends as well).

Hoping for the "save" in the case of LITF; that his comfort-level/appetite/disposition continue to be conducive to healing; that the time is right for the right meds to be available to SHRINK those tumors.

My heart goes out to Monica who had to make the decision to let Sluggo leave "this mortal coil" and to all the humans who have had to do this as the last living act of love for a furry family member. Not a one can ever be replaced, and I couldn't conceive of life without a horse or without a houseful of cats.

I must admit I cracked myself up when preparing this Comment for posting, because at first I typo'ed "Desperate Horsewives" - which so many of us are, aren't we!?!?!?

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri at August 28, 2006 2:24 PM

Hey, just went online (this is probably old news by now..)
and found the article on Alex Brown and Tim Woolley Site

    http://cecilwhig.com/articles/2006/08/28/news/01.txt

Online outpouring of support for Barbaro
    * Thousands check horse’s status every day on trainer’s Web site

    also

    ‘He’s holding his own’
    * Barbaro walking on all four legs 100 days later; trainers try to move on

Every day, about 12,000 people from around the world look to Alex Brown to answer one burning question: How’s Barbaro?

Ever since the Kentucky Derby-winning Fair Hill horse broke his leg in a tragic Preakness misstep, the Web site Brown maintains has become a premiere source for fans who need a daily dose of information.

Before May, Brown lived a quiet life exercising horses for four Fair Hill trainers including Tim Woolley, who has kept a stable at the training center for 11 years. As a side project, Brown also maintained the Web site www.timwoolleyracing.com, which then mostly listed racing stats on Woolley’s horses. Back then, about six people logged on the site per day, Brown said.

But that was before the gentle bay colt called Barbaro burst onto the national horseracing scene. Barbaro, who lived and trained next door to Woolley’s barn, astounded everyone when he won the Kentucky Derby by more than six lengths May 6. Two days later, Barbaro came back to Fair Hill a sudden star and started training for the May 20 Preakness.

    Brown had an idea.

“I told (Woolley), ‘Let’s start putting up daily Barbaro updates, to try to build traffic to our Web site,’” Brown said.

Each day, he’d watch Barbaro scamper around the training track and he’d talk to the horse’s trainer, Michael Matz. Then he’d write an update and post it on Woolley’s site. The number of daily visitors to the site climbed to about 120 that week, Brown said.

Then came Preakness weekend. Barbaro burst through the starting gate early. He shattered his leg minutes later and paramedics rushed him to the New Bolton Center for Large Animals in Kennett Square, Pa. with the outlook grim.

“After the disaster at Preakness, everyone in Fair Hill was devastated,” Brown said. “It was just such a shock. We weren’t going to cover Barbaro anymore.”

But then, he figured, what the hey. He called the New Bolton Center that night to check Barbaro’s condition.

On his site, he posted what he’d learned: “Barbaro is now in the recovery pool (7:40 p.m.). He has a bone plate fusing his ankle and pastern and a cast has been placed over this,” it said. “Dr. Richardson described the surgery as one of the toughest he has performed ….”

Brown said his site was the first source to release the information that Barbaro had come out of surgery.

“We had over 3,000 hits in an hour, which crashed the site,” he said.

In the following few days, he continued to call Barbaro’s vet, talk to Michael Matz, and post updates.

Thousands of people started logging on to read them and to post get-well messages to Barbaro.

“We’re tracking about 12,000 visits to our site a day,” Brown said.

Before Barbaro, a daily site update took Brown 20 minutes.

“Now I probably spend four to five hours on it a day,” he said. “It’s a huge undertaking.”

He had to increase the site’s bandwidth to hold the deluge of traffic. And a newly installed discussion board shows just how much time fans are willing to devote to their beloved horse. Some visitors post more than 10 messages per day with kind words like, “BELIEVE IN MIRACLES - BELIEVE IN BARBARO n Susan.”

In the poem “Barbaro’s Goodnight Whisperer,” site visitor Cle Shaw writes:

“From Dawn’s earliest sunbeams grazing your face/You knew at once NBC was your new place/Handling all kinds of setbacks you willed your way through/Winning America’s hearts and your Dr. Dean’s too ….”

Through his daily postings, Brown has even garnered some fans of his own. After someone posted a picture of Brown riding a horse, a smattering of women posted notes deeming him a “hottie.”

Brown, 42, says he’s trying to not only keep people abreast of Barbaro news, but also to familiarize them with the horseracing industry.

“A lot of the people who visit our site, they’re not really horseracing people,” he said. “Now they’ve got an interest in the industry because they’re Barbaro fans, so we’re trying to educate them. We’re trying to cover horseracing at a high level.”

He plans to keep the updates coming at least until Barbaro gets firmly back on his feet.

“It’s been an interesting project, and we’ve got at least another four or five months left of it,” he said. “We’ll keep it up until Barbaro leaves the New Bolton Center, which is what everyone is rooting for,” he said.

So, by the way, how’s Barbaro?

“He’s great!” Brown said. “He’s out grazing and everything. There still could be a lot of complications, but today, he’s going really great. The best we could hope for

Here is an update on Lost In The Fog that was posted by Vic Stoffer, a racecaller here in California and Florida, to the Del Mar Fan Forum last night. He visted with Greg Gilchrist at Foggy's stable. Note the reference to a delivery of a basket of goodies and Mr. Gilchrist's gracious acceptance. Very nice story.

Posted: Sun Aug 27, 2006 11:40 pm Post subject:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went and saw Lost In The Fog today. He looked in great spirits and oblivious to the challenge ahead. I was thinking that's one great thing the horses have on us.

I told Greg Gilchrist how much I admired his dedication to his horse. But moreso how great he's been with the media and fans thoughout this champions career.

He and Mr Aleo clearly got it. And understood how much fun was to be had and how to rejoice in a once in a lifetime horse.

I believe they should hold their heads high.

As I was standing talking to Gilly a woman and her teen daughter walked up with a basket of apples and carrots, a card and a sketch that the girl had drawn of LITF.

Greg was so classy in how he greeted them. Took time to answer all their questions and just as they were about to leave ask them if they'd like to meet the horse. You should have seen the look on their faces as they walked under the shedrow.

I'm a pretty hardened racetracker and I thought I was gonna start blubbering and got the heck out of dodge.

Just another example that our sport is the best of them all. And our horses and horsemen are to be treasured.

How about a photo in a year of Barbaro and Lost in The Fog both standing in KY.

Longshot? Of course but they hit everyday.

I was blessed to have called them both to stakes wins at Gulfstream.

Tonight I say an extra prayer for them both.

    SALLY IN KEY WEST:
Glad to hear Ernesto decided not to visit you.
You guys down in Florida have been on a roller coaster.
My sister lives in Vero Beach. Being you are down that way, please keep an eye out for me. Not for her, per se, but for people needed animals evacuated or rescued.
I will call her later, but I posted earlier to Janice that she has friends who belong to a group that helps animals. They come in and help protect animals that have no safe place to go.

    Good Morning My Sweet Barbaro:

I hope you are comfortable today after having your cast changed yesterday. Alex reported that you had a comfortable night last night, and that makes us all very happy.

Patty, I will add to your list for Barbaro what Man o'War's groom, Will Harbut, said about "Big Red", "He's just the mostest horse". I believe that Barbaro is that too!!

They say that Mr. Harbut really loved Man o'War, and people came to visit him all the time. Not only for Man O' War greatness (he won 20 of his 21 races), but also to listen to Mr. Barbut talk about him. From what I have read about him, Mr. Harbut had a wonderful voice.

Oops i goofed! Just wanted to give everybody an update about Lawyer Ron. Looks like he came back from his injury in the K.D. Ok. Saw him Sat. night and he looked fabulous, so did Lewis Michael but it looked like he might of needed that race. I thought he would win much easier. Dallas Stewarts horse finished 2nd at 30-1 and made it close. Dallas was actually there with his horse and he was next to us in the grandstand. he was very pleased with the result. I was amazed that he actually showed up there. The attendance was about 8000. Let me tell you- it was packed to capacity. So this was a big event for this track, but everyone came out to see this very good 3 y o So when prominent people and horses show up, it is a great occasion. Thanks dallas for coming around the little people. and thanks to Bob Holthus for bringing Lawyer Ron to us. It was a great night. People cheered like it was the Kentucky Derby. Jen

Posted by: Trish at August 28, 2006 3:17 PM

I was going back through old updates just to see the progress Barbaro's made over the last 3 months. I came upon an excerpt of a post made by Kim Brette, Peter's wife. This is in update 26 so it's quite old, but it makes refrence to Eduardo(Bobby's groom) getting to see him at NBC. Thought I'd post the except:

After meeting with Dr Richardson, he took us to see the champ, he looked great, happy, in no pain at all, I asked him how many mints he was allowed he said as many as he would like, we didn't go overboard, no sugar overload...he is a three year old and those of us with the human version know what too much sugar does.

One of the most touching things was how Eduardo and him were, Eduardo quietly walked in and looked every part of his body over, started picking the straw out of his tail, brushing his mane and stroking him, he truly cares about him and I think he loves going there to make sure his boy is okay.

I know we were all wondering about his groom. Glad he got to visit Barbaro.

    Barbaro has cast change

    August 28, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA —Veterinarians at Penn’s George D. Widener Hospital changed the right hind leg cast of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro yesterday, Sunday, August 27. “The cast was changed because there was a small crack in it,” said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. “Based on new radiographs that were taken, the leg looked excellent under the cast. The pastern joint looks completely fused, and there is only a small area in the long pastern bone that has a little farther to go before we take him out of the cast completely.”

In addition, the radiographs showed that there were no signs of infection. The cast change took place under general anesthesia, and Barbaro had another successful pool recovery before returning to his stall.

The colt’s left hind foot has laminitis, but Barbaro seems comfortable with that foot as well. The bandage on the left hind foot continues to be changed daily.

According to Dr. Richardson: “Barbaro is bright and happy this morning with an excellent appetite.”

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania’s George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, September 5 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

For more information on Barbaro, please see www.vet.upenn.edu.

Dear friends thank you all for the support you have shown and given us regarding out situation with Antonio (the blk Persian in SF).
We took him to the Vet Sunday and talked over every option that was available to us but in the end putting him down was the kindest and most humane think we could for the cat. We had to put his well being and comfort before our emotional needs. He passed in peace after having had a weekend with all the people that loved him.
It is a sad day for us but we pull through knowing that he is no longer in discomfort and that his last days were painfree and happy ones.
So, thanks again to all and continued healing for Barbaro and Foggy and the others that we have missed in our three day absence.

Alex just posted the following on the forum. A few bad apples spoiled if for us. Jazz

    Quote:
I just want to post that perhaps I was taking on too much when deciding to open up a forum, chat room and leave comments open for TWR etc. I thought it would be a good idea to allow discussion, and thought it would also be great for people wanting to learn more about racing and horses in general. Well I have come to realise that I was a bit of an idealist and perhaps I have taken on a little too much. While I am not yet going to shut everything down (other than my updates), it is something I will contemplate doing over the next couple of days. I am mostly exhausted with disputes amongst us, and i have been personally attacked on more than one occasion by more than one person. i am not going to reveal who these people are, and I am certain that they are truly good people, we just have different viewpoints, and different means of expressing those viewpoints. The real frustration is I know this is a very small minority, and again, I think that likely just good people anyway.

I had hoped we would all get along simply because we all had one main focus in mind, its all about Barbaro.

Anyway, just posting, please don't respond to this post nor e-mail me about it, as I do know it would be a shame to remove the discussion boards etc.

    cheers, alex

    Gooood morning Barbaro family!

ACN!! ohh my! that makes my heart sing!

Thanx for all the news Alex, I'm learning so much just by coming here every day...can't wait to see that article about you! A "hottie" huh?

To all our Florida friends, stay safe, evaluate whether to evacuate or not. I was brushed by Hurricane Andrew and fortunately escaped any real damage on it's way to punishing Miami. And I too worry about pets. I've talked to people who left their pets in the home while they evacuated. SOOOOO WRONG!! When Hurricane Rita threatened us, I stayed put with my two cats. If they couldn't travel, then I couldn't.

Okay babycakes, enough soapbox! I hope you have a grand day, even tho Dr R isn't there. I'm sure your Mom or Michael or Peter will be showing up to shower you with attention.

Now twitch your ears, flick that cute lil tail..Here goes!

    Eat your carrots every day
No more sling, so play in the hay

    Sunshine, breezes, grass everywhere
    There is nothing to compare

Grow hoof grow! Heal leg heal!
    That's become our daily appeal

Keep on doing like you are
You're our bright and shining star!

    Hugs and smoochies, babycakes!

Off to light candles for everyone.

Can someone explain why a horse would be referred to as 'it'?

Lawyer Ron's owner,(Mrs.), was in an interview and she stated, "We put 'it' on the dirt, then we put 'it' on the turf........". I would refer to 'it' as Ron, myself. But I guess there is something I don't know. Maybe she just needs to remain detached, so to speak.

Thank God for a positive weekend and a smooth cast change. Hopefully (and prayerfully of course), Doc won't have to change it for awhile.

Good article about Alex. And thanks Alex for your continued hard work.

Writers seem to be now theorizing the could-have beens:re: Barbaro vs. Bernardini. We were blessed this year with having two outstanding 3y/olds. They just didn't race contemporaneously, with the exception of the Preakness in which the head-to-head of course never materialized. So, everyone is forced to hypothesize and theorize and what the rivalry would have looked like.

More than likely (to my chagrine) Berbardini will be named 3 y/o champion, unless he is upset in the Jockey Club. If he is beaten, then things will be confusing for the voters, as the Barbaro effect remains strong. What I am waiting for in Bernardini is for him to run in a crowd (i.e. field more thank 12 horses) and get bumped around and jostled. Then let's see how he runs. I am not convinced that he can handle that. I think he is pampered and is used to running out by himself. We might have to wait for the Breeder's Cup Classic to see a large enough field to put these doubts of mine to rest. I am also looking forward to him having to stare a competitor down in the stretch for home, in a test of wills. He won't most likely have to face this in the Jockey, but will in the Classic.

It deserves mentioning that Bobby passed both of the above tests. The K. Derby is the Derby (i.e. a stampede), where bumping and get cut off are the norm. He has also shown his will to win, being tested twice in the lane only to push his challengers aside.

Berbardini (NOT bashing) still to me has much to prove. He beat a weak field in the JIm Dandy and another in the Travers. Before anyone casts their vote, I think patience is in order. Just my view from this side of the fence.

Posted by: Greg at August 28, 2006 3:34 PM

After visiting the candle site, it seems the numbers have picked up in the barba and foggy group...that's good. I also lit a candle for all the guys down in hurricane lane..Janice et.all and labeled it ...."FL." hope that is non-conflicting with another FL candle group designation already in existence.

Alex has been our lifeline with all that is going on with Barbaro and the horseracing industry.

Please, whoever is bashing Alex, stop! He has nothing but a kind heart and has taken his own life and put it on hold for US!

He has provided us with a means to communicate and learn so much more through these communications. Like right now, the hurricane in Florida and the horses/animals there in danger. It will be a sad day when we cannot come onto Tim Wooley's Racing to hear about the world.

Alex...is there any way we can all provide you with a site just for what you have been doing?

I am learning so much about horseracing. I have always loved it, but only the Triple Crown, really.

We can all disagree, but we should do it in a good spirited way. Alex has done so much for all of us. Just think, perhaps without this website, the NBC would not have had all those wonderful contributions.

Thank you for posting Alex's comments on the forum. I am so sad about this. Alex should not have to babysit any of us. He spends 4-5 extra hours working on this site for the benefit of all of us. I am not a horse owner and have never worked with horses but fell in love with Barbaro. I have learned so much about a wide variety of horse issues from those of you who have had the experience of being around these wonderful animals and I will certainly miss that if Alex takes down the ability to post.

I don't make anyone mad I just feel that we should have used this site and the forum to discuss Barbaro and other horse related issues. The personal discussions should be handled thru personal emails between those folks who want to carry on those kinds of discussions. This site is viewed by many in the sports world and I don't blame Alex for what he may decide to do. However, as I just said above, it will make me very sad.
Thanks for listening, I do not mean to offend anyone.

In light of Bernardinis success, and Barbaros' extreme situation, why can't there be co -champions of the 3 yr old division..

And if Bernardini goes on to beat olders, he may indeed win the horse of the year award and leave 3yr old honors to Barbaro. Horses seldom win both 3rd old and horse of the year, why I don't know, the Eclipe voters like giving only 1 to a horse..

    Kathy J.,

I am sooo sorry to hear about Twister. I'm sure he was a big part of your workday. Office cats offer so much.

We have an office cat here at work. He's a huge black cat and his name is Bart! I love him dearly. Great stress reliever. (He goes for rides on the forklifts!) He's getting to be quite old, 13 or so, I'm told. I dread the day....

    Take care.

Sharri - I agree with you. When it comes down to it, if our posts here only deal with Bobby and horseracing, how can their be any conflict?? We all love Bobby - that is why we are here. The only conflict I have seen is when we get so far off that topic! Alex, you have been a saint - I hope you will reconsider, but I understand if you cannot.

This is my 3rd posting. Alex, thank you so much for this site. So much good has come from it. For example, the wonderful birthday party for Dr. R would not have happened--with the donations to the Barbaro Fund. The organized vigils would not have occurred. You, personally have been the catalyst for more good than perhaps any of us will ever know, for I believe this community of caring has helped in some small way towards Barbaro's recovery. And this would not have happened if you had not had this site. But if the site is taking so much of your time, perhaps you need a break from it for a week or so. If we could just have the news for awhile that would be great. You must take care of yourself and return to this site renewed, for we are all in this for the long haul for Barbaro. Thanks again, Alex.

    Good Morning Mr. B,

Another successful cast change (hooray!) Another Comfortable Night (hip hip horay!) You are a marvel.

Joe Drape (NYT) has written some nice opinion pieces about Barbaro. This one (B&B) is no different. It's feels so good to read honest and thoughtful words, not just the ones made to sell newspapers. Thanks Alex for connecting us to it.

The post re the caller who visited LITF was very moving. When an experienced caller is reduced to an emotional reaction - it's big.

Barbaro and Lost in the Fog standing in a field together. It's the picture that will be seen around the world (apologies to baseball). So if the shot heard around the world happened, so can this picture.

Barbaro and LITF have a great day! Check in later.

    Love ya,
    Thanks.

    OK.

Up at Saratoga amongst trainers and horsemen ,alot feel that PIMLICO was neglegant in letting Barbaro run in the Preakness. They will not openly speak against the track, but there is alot of bitterness around against Pimlico. Not giving a horse of Barbaros quality more time before loading after the break thru the gate. They feel that Pimlico did not want to refund the millions bet on Barbaro to the public.

If Pimlico scratched him AND extended post time they could have gotten their bet money back intot he pools, they didnt want to chance it.

I heard this from alot more than one person up there..

ALOT ---ALOT of Barbaro hats and shirts were to be seen at Saratoga over the past week. Many spectators were wearing them. AND even with the performance of Bernardini, people still feel he would have got beat by Barbaro.

Saratoga people know horses, they saw Bluegrass Cat was washed out before the race, NOBODY headed him in the race, HIGH COTTON, Pletchers "speed horse" actually hurt Bluegrass Cats chances by not getting the lead and forcing the cat 3 wide around the track.

No sour grapes here on my part, Bernardini was best on the day, But beating that field and a BGC at maybe 65% still doesnt show me he's is(was) better than Barbaro.

On Barbaros campaign he beat ALL COMERS, not a field of 5 in the slop or 6 in a 2 horse race where the only competition he had was running as it turned out on only 3 legs.

The best horse I saw at SARATOGA this week was DISCREET CAT, I think he'd have won the Travers in a walk. VERY IMPERSSIVE ANIMAL..

Interesting to see if Godolphin runs him in the Gold Cup OR Classic..

To me he is the competition Barbaro would have had to beat if he was still sound.

If anyone has any questions or anything to ask , feel free, I will get back to them..

BUT BARBARO IS ALIVE AND WELL IN MANY PEOPLES MINDS AND HEARTS IN THE RACING COMMUNITY.

I want to add my sincere thanks to you for maintaining this site. I have been around horses pretty much all my life .... can't think of life without them. But I have to admit, I have learned many different things from you and others that have posted on this site, about a horse. I am grateful. I am also grateful that I can find information about Barbaro from someone that cares for him, knows his connections, knows his background (and now his unrealized potential as a champion), and.... most of all, just seems to be a good guy and not wanting to profit from this. You do strike me as a fellow that simply wants to spread the news about your boy, Barbaro. Thank-you. I want to add my daily best wishes and prayers for Barbaro from all of us here at the Gates of Eden Farm.

I was never interested in horse racing before. I thought it was a way that people got rich off of horses and discarded them after their use.

After being EDUCATED by this website I have a different perspective. I am sad that people do not have enough respect for ALEX and all that he has done, not only for BARBARO but for the whole racing industry.

It would be very sad to see our "link" into this world come to an end.

Hi Alex - I am behind you in your decision if you decide the close the forum here. Your posts have been most informative and is enough information for me to keep abreast of the daily progress for Barbaro. The discussion board was to be there for the daily forums, but it appears you have 2 sites to monitor, and that is more than what you need to manage. Do what you have to do - your work is greatly appreciated either way.

I am happy to hear that Bernardini is doing so well after the Travers...wish it was the same for BGC. I hope he is feeling ok and getting the care and attention he so deserves...I'm sure he is. I just wonder why they even ran him, if there were any doubt about his soundness. I hope that isn't the case.

Barbaro, you champ, sounds like you are flying high. You continue to be such a good boy. Everyone is so please with your progress...keep on keepin on Bobby. You are the greatest champion ever!!

Does anyone know where to view the replay of the Travers...I would love to see it again.

    Alex,

    In reply to Jazz's posting:

You have no idea how much of a difference your website has made. I have never posted or participated in any discussions via internet.

We all appreciate what you are doing and cannot comprehend the work you are putting into this website. Many of us have are being educational and informed on horses, plus other things.

Sometimes when we are traveling I get upset, but realize that there are good and bad in every group.

This has become my connection to the US. I wish there is something I could help with or say to encourage you that there are more nicer people than, well you know, not worth wasting our time.

If I find something I don't like, I just move on, not worth giving them my time.

Again, thank you for what you have done for many of us, plus our friends (horses).

Thank you Alex for the wonderful news!

Guys, First of all, Alex rocks and I am ever so grateful for him, this site, and the Barbaro "family" I met here the day before the July 13th press conference when Dr. R spoke of "L" and thankful for the comforts and communal tears over the weeks thru all fellow posters on this site. Hate when a few "bad apples" shine on our parade which may cause changes.
Secondly, I place the Penn update on my office inter-window that looks out to the halls here where I work and just put up 8-28-06. I had a leftover happy tear on my face about reading it, and someone who I work near, saw me. Told her just really good news about Barbaro, and that I was fine. She started to tell me yesterday when she was leaving church services, someone said to her she is alot like Barbaro with a foot injury. This woman had a horrific motorcycle accident when she was turning a corner, and sideswiped a car and much of her foot had to be rebuilt, but is getting along quite fine now. She and her husband ride cycles for recreational purposes and they were in Tenn when it happened. I started to explain about Babraro's accident and "L" and all the great care and love he is getting over the last 3 months. She read the update, and asked about his ability to be a stud, etc. She only wished she was worth as much as he was, but she too is an animal person. So you see, when you least expect it, someone shines light on Barbaro and I am so glad I had the privilege to enlighten someone about this fine horse and all his caregivers.

So glad that Dr. Richardson is taking some time off.

It has been a very hard time for over four months now. We have all struggled with feelings we were all surprised to have for this great horse.

It has been a learning experience for all. I believe that all of you have handled in a very professional and compassionate way.

The amazing thing is that we took our lead from BARBARO. He continues to be steady, willing and ready for the next challenge in his life here on earth.

Alex, are there "obnoxious people" on this list??! How sorry I am about that, and especially so if you are terribly surprised.
Do not concern yourself about them, Laddie. I certainly don't. And thank you immensely for providing the opportunity to *get a few Things out there*..Not everything does *get out there* this Time, since, last time, some things got into the wrong hands. Perhaps you can see how that happens. In fact, I think you can see quite a bit now -as others of goodwill can-about what happened last time, and about what has gone on during the intervening years. It has been vital that good people see this. So don't concern yourself. Your fine efforts with this generous list of yours now surely belong once again to racing and horses and you and yours. And any other websites, lists, etc. shall soon prove out. Apples rarely fall very far from their trees. You've been great. Thanks again! †KAWilson

Mike C, once again thank you for your posts. It's interesting to get info from someone that spends time at the track. I too feel that Bernardini has not been tested. Not the way Barbaro was in the Derby. Not to take away from what Bernardini has done, just not as impressive as Barbaro's Derby race. I guess my one question would be, is it just that the media has to have one "superhorse" to focus on? Is because Barbaro's racing career finished that they move on to hype up another horse? I guess I'm just suprised that when I watch racing, they don't bring up any of the points you mentioned such as the # of horses in the field, being stared down at the stretch, running against quality horses, and so on.

Barbaro is only the 6th horse in history to come in and win the Derby undefeated. He ran against 19 other horses who were considered to be some of the best 3yo in 35 years. He won by a margain of 61/2 lengths which in the largest in a Derby in five decades. He performed this well against the best there are. How can anyone question that?

I know you said not to respond but, if you close down, this might be the last chance I have to say thank you for everything you've done. Being involved with the virtual world was a new experience for me. Actually, still trying to figure most of it out!!!

You know how more than 99% of us feel about you. It would be terribly sad to see the less than 1% win. But, sadly, that's what usually happens in life.

Mike C that was such an insightful post about what you heard in Saratoga in regards to Pimlico. But why was it being spoken about on the down-low? I'm sure a lot of us are wondering.

I was in Saratoga this weekend too. It was great.

Bonnie, I can't say I 'have a clue as to what is going on', but I think it is possible to see that there is a LOT OF BACK-BITING GOING ON, and Alex is in a position to know the BACK-BITERS TO BE QUITE WRONG, AND QUITE IN THE WRONG. My instinct is that, knowing the pain it is their *intent* to cause upsets him, as it would any decent individual, and Alex has proven himself sterling in terms of his efforts on behalf of Horse and Man, with this List. I repeat, I 'set some things out there' -you know, like the CA nadian horse striking Barbaro from behind as Perfect Allegory, and you know, things like that, though TRUE, may not have been entirely helpful :) Buck up, Alex, YOU have been Most Helpful. I repeat, *Not everything gets out to everybody this Time; Everything gets to only a few this Time*. The BACK BITERS HAVE SHOWN themselves. People KNOW what they are, and by Comparison, they finally can see what has happened over the last many years. -Oh, and if they have any sense, they can certainly also understand that one reason people who are innocent and HARMED need not *be concerned* about BACK BITERS -on the internet, or elsewhere- is that BACK BITERS CAN BE SUED. WALK ON, BARBARO! †KAWilson

I was thinking about those first X-rays we saw right after the accident and upon seeing todays update, I was awestruck at the miracle that has occured here. The "L" word threw us all for a loop, but the healing of Barbaro's RIGHT H bones was our initial concern. Well Folks, ITS ALMOST DONE!!!!!!!!!!!

REJOICE!!!! BE HAPPY!!!!!! JUMP UP AND DOWN!!! CRY FOR JOY!!!!

    Hi Barbaro Buddies,
I would hate not to be able to say that anymore. We all know what can happen here, and we have to try to get past it now. I know we all want to back Alex and he knows that to, and that is great.

Some times people have nothing better to do than to cause trouble, and it can be very difficult for those of us here who don't, because we care for Tim and Alex.

Lets move on and forget. We are here for our Beloved Barbaro. If Alex closes this forum down what are we going to do with all the positive energy and good wishes that I feel have helped Barbaro with his healing and doing so well. We need to try harder to ignor trolls. If not for Alex and ourselves most IMPORTANT for Barbaro.
You are all a great bunch of people! I would miss you all.Remember WE ARE here for Barbaro and we don't want to take anything away for him...not now he has come to far. Believe in Miracles, Believe in Barbaro.

Alex - thanks for all the good news and articles. I come here for the NBC updates!

Barbaro - you are doing so well. You are such a smart boy.

I believe you are the better horse Barbaro. Bernardini is a great horse but you are the super horse.I am still deeply saddened by the fate you were dealt - you certainly did not deserve it. It should have been you, yet again, in the winners circle Saturday. But, in this life, your will to survive and your bravery is what makes you great.

You, truly are, the gift that keeps on giving.

Alex, thank you for all you have done. We cannot comprehend the tremendous effort you have put into this site and the boards but you will never know how grateful we are. I, too have never posted to a site before this one and have learned tons about racing and horses. I was reading the discussion boards yesterday and I know the attack you are referring to. This is the first time that I have posted on this site, however, I have been, like so many others, a multiple-time-a-day visitor to this site. The updates have been great and I have learned so very much about horses and racing and my appreciation for them and the sport has grown.

My prayers are with Barbaro and everyone surrounding him, as well as Lost in the Fog and everyone surrounding him. It was a shame about Saint Liam and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone surrounding him as well. And I cannot forget Bluegrass Cat either.

I haven't followed racing nearly as much as I have since Barbaro's Derby win and everything that has followed, but is it this common to see so many injuries to top thoroughbreds? Has this year been out of the ordinary? I know a lot of disucussion regarding injuries has come about in recent months, but is it a common thing, or has this year been rough on the injury-front? I know it's probably been discussed in the forums, however I don't always get over to them.

I know it's not supposed to be replied to, however, Alex I like so many others have learned so much about racing and more importantly, the horses who race in the races themselves. This has been informative and I've found myself tearing up at times while reading some of the updates and comments on this page. It's become part of my daily routine and I truly appreciate all that you have done for Barbaro and us in keeping us informed and "connected" to those closest to him and him himself.

My appreciation for horses and the sport has grown and it's always been an interest of mine, but now I will be able put it into action, and will learn how to ride and take care of horses as I will soon be moving to my girlfriend's family's farm, where she has horses. She's given one to me that was born on her farm and I named her Trinity. Erin loves her horses and I am excited to put some of the things I've learned here to action when the time comes. Horses are truly remarkable animals.

To the above mentioned, my prayers and thoughts are with all of you and may you all recover from your injuries and the loss you have experienced. And Alex, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done for all of us. It's been truly a blessing.

    Sincerely,
    Ryan

    Leslie,

Every so often I go back and look at those x-rays. It's still hard to comprehend that Dr. R was able to put the pieces back together. I wish NBC would post the newest x-rays for comparison! (Sorry, I'm as interested in the science of things as I am in the miracle!)

    Alex,

Was there any mention of any more bent or broken screws? I remember a report from a previous cast change that stated one screw was bent. Also, could you find out (in your spare time..) how much new hoof wall and sole growth there is on the left hind?? Thanks again for the updates!

Posted by: joyce moore at August 28, 2006 6:50 PM

    Ryan,
Thanks for posting to the site today. Just like you I read all the updates for a very long time before posting. I am sure you will love living on the farm with your new horse Trinity.

I agree with Joyce that we should be thrilled to death with Bobby's progress! Grazing in the sunshine, and now what we've been waiting for all this time is almost at hand---the day when the cast comes off.

Re. backbiting, I suppose I've added my share, and for that I apologize.

Alex, I bet you never expected it to snowball like this. You have been grace under pressure, and from the first day I came here (on the day of the surgery, when I was desperate to find out something--anything!) you have been very good to all of us.

Perhaps you need an administrative assistant. So you can do the reporting, which is becoming more and more interesting as we head toward the Breeders Cup, and someone else can moderate here.

Or, perhaps, it's just asking too much. You've tried very hard to keep us on an even keel.

There's been so much love here, though, not just for Bobby but for Mike, for LITF, for pets and horses and people, and I am convinced that our vigilance has helped Bobby in some measure. One thing you can say for all the bickering and off-topic stuff-- we've never wavered in caring about Bobby.

I think we should all be proud of that.

Still can't get over the great news about Bobby's radiographs that Alex posted today. I have to believe that all the love and energy from this site helped in some way.

Three months ago, if anyone had told me I'd ever make such a statement, much less light candles, participate in vigils, write poems and show them to the public, and believe in miracles--well, I'd have laughed you right out the door.

Today, I'm having a hard time focusing at work and my thoughts keep returning to Bobby, his future, and this site and its posters, which has quietly and steadily become a very important part of my life.

I'm hoping we can all continue together as one for Bobby, and Fog, and the horse angels who haunt us, and our own beloved furred, feathered, and hooved loved ones.

There are a lot of great people I've met on this site whom I'd like to stay in touch with; hope you feel the same way. I'm not going to write a list, but here's my email addy:

Trolls are alive and well. Creating havoc and causing heartache on basically every discussion board on the net.

I too will greatly miss the chance to talk with all of you and "feel the vibes" that come from this site. I have learned alot here. I don;t feel so isolated with my feelings and thoughts because of this board.

I was once a part of the msnbc horseracing forum but, because of TROLLS and just down-right mean people, I left. It is truly amazing to me the venom that some people spew. I guess better on a message board than in a post office...

I truly hope that Alex won't let a few people get him down or worse, feel that this site isn't worth putting yourself up to be defamed. There has been a alot of good that has come from this site and, irrespective of what happens, TROLLS or others can't take that away. We have lifted Bobby, Mike, The Fog, Liam, and many others up in prayer and held vigils nationwide on their behalf. We have expressed to everyone at NBC how much we appreciate all the work they have done and are doing for Bobby by sending them treats and mostly, showering them with love. We've even been able to get the Doc to loosen up a little and realize that he IS a celebrity now. This site has become a phenemon and is written about in newspapers all over the world. This site is now home to many who check in on Bobby daily. Many don't post, they just check in. This site is an outlet for those who are feeling distressed on a particular day and need someone to talk to. Frienships have been made here that I am confident will last a lifetime. We have been through alot- the highs that Bobby is going to be O.K., to the lows that say is prognosis is "poor". Through thick and thin, we have been here- you lean on me and I will lean on you. You have a need? I can feel it. I have a need- someone here will take up the slack. Prose has been written here that is as good as it gets. We even took a stab at comics a while back! Videos have been made, art drawn, songs written- all because of this site (Alex and Tim) and of course for Bobby. We've lit faith candles for anyone or anything needing Divine Intervention.

I am so proud of everyone here who is in the business of sharing and spreading good will and love, which is 99% of the posters here. I love everyone here.

Alex: I know that you asked that we not reply to your post. Please know that we all appreciate you greatly and if I could take any insult every heralded your way, I would take that on anytime, anywhere. Just know this Alex: if this board is closed on the account of a few contempteous, lost souls, then bad has won over good in this case. Please don't let that happen.

I just want to say that this web site and Barbaro has given me so much!
I knew NOTHING about horse or horse racing. Last night I was telling my husband everything I have learned and boy did I feel smart and actually I knew what I was talking about. :)
I have shared happiness laughter and cried.
I have met some nice people and some not so nice people. But we are not all perfect right??
I have chronic pain and let me tell you some days just out right suck! But this site has given me strength if BARBARO CAN DO IT SO CAN I.
I hate so see it close down. I think it does so much good for so many people. I have to say I was not much of a prayer person but since Barbaro has come into my life I participate and he has made me a firm believer in Prayer.

Barbaro is now the intimidator. Even the press can't handle him.

    To All Barbaromaniacs:

I just read in the NY Times website that they are discussing BGC's injury and whether surgery is imminent.

I apologize to Alex for posting this here, but this is the extent of my technology.

Can BGC end up in a bad way like our beloved Barbaro??? Bobby was my favorite, but BGC was a close second.

    Love to Barbaro and Foggy.

I too have had a difficult year, and Barbaro has kept me going. If he can fight, then so can I. You know he, I think, is a Taurus too.

    All, take care.

Frankly, saying Barbaro can't read is like saying retrievers can't count. Anybody who has ever attempted to distribute treats equally between them knows otherwise. [Plus, what about Barbaro's peppermint and carrot accounting skills? Not to mention his healing ones?!??!?]

Keep up the excellent work, (undefeated) Champ.

LNB, it's likely that the surgery won't be difficult, considering how Bluegrass Cat came out of the race. Of course, any time there's anesthesia, as we all know (and freak out about, rightfully so, every time Bobby goes under). But I'm thinking he'll be as good as new, except they won't race him--he'll go right to stud. That's just a guess, though.

    Drew,

Under what circumstances is the horse bobbing it's head?

    Joyce,

In the video I saw, which peaked my curiousity, the horse was standing still.

Later read an article (don't have time to re-locate just now) that a certain horse would have been awarded more "points" if not for the "head-bob". Don't know what the circumstances were in that instance.

    Thanks Joyce,

Jo, thank you too. Sorry for these messages I just thought I should post a reply while I still can (just in case).

I think of Barbaro a lot and though I've never seen him in person, he's touched my life, same as so many others. At times I say to myself, I can't do ths or that, yet I think hey, yeah I can because Barbaro's fighting through all he is fighting through (and I'm sure the sugar cubes and carrots don't hinder his spirits either hehe ;)) It just warms the heart that he's doing so well despite it all and it's almost as if he knows what he must do and he knows he's recovering. And I can't imagine how much that healing itches either .. I mean, I'd get a skinned knee as a kid and it'd itch so bad when it was healing. I'm sure if he could talk he'd say please someone scratch my bandage for me! hehe

Seriously, though, this horse means a lot to me, as to all of you as well. I didn't say in my previous posts how great the report was today - it's truly a testament to the healing power of God and the knowledge and care and love Dr. R and those around Barbaro have given him through all of this. I'm just so glad that he's doing so well. :)

Just a quick note about Trinity - Erin told me she's fast and hates to have a horse ahead of her. She'll often go riding on one and the other will ride alongside them. Erin tells me her and Kansas often fight over her attention so she said she looks forward to having me there to give Trinity attention and take some of the pressure off ;). Also, she's told me Trinity likes things her way sometimes, yet she has a good disposition.

Pamela - you had me laughing re Barbaro reading the column.. haha

    Good AFternoon, Team Barbaro!

    #####

I don't understand it. I go to work with "the boys", come home and find people are attacking Alex? Sorry, Alex, I have to put in my 2 cents. Whoever those people are, yes, you can express your opinions, but do not...I repeat...do not EVER virtually attack the one person who has given so much of himself to keeping all of us informed about the phenomenon named Barbaro. Go somewhere else. We're family here.

Alex, please do not shut down the comments. If you need an admin, I'd be honored to help out (I was one in my corporate life) until you could get one hired. If you feel you have to shut down, I understand. Believe me, I do.

Whoever is doing this is so empty inside...that's the sad part. They're putting their emptiness and sadness onto Alex and that's not right. Not at all.

Bobby and LITF, this may be the last time I can tell you both how much I love you and pray for miracles. Be strong, be brave - both my crazy diamond and my Long Time Sun.

LNB...we were all concerned when we heard the news about BGC...I don't know if surgery is needed or not....Thanks to Dr. R....injuries can now be repaired and horses' lives saved...

The good thing is that the injury was noticed and attended to so that it didn't lead to a catastrophic breakdown at a later time...

    Drew,

If you could post a link to the video or describe the points scenario, it would really be helpful. I'm not sure if the points you mentioned are being deducted in a certain class at a show or not. If this is horse show related, let me know which type of class you were watching.

Head bobbing/tossing can be caused by many things. Head tossing by a horse that is not moving may be nothing more than a sign of irritation caused by flies or interest in other horses. Some horses are also very sensitive to the sun which may also cause them to toss/bob their heads.

Head bobbing while in motion may be due to soreness in one leg. Depending on which gait the horse is in the head may come up when the affected leg is placed on the ground. A bi-laterally lame horse may not show a head bob but rather a stiffness in gait.

Head bobbing by a sound horse in the show ring is usually due to the rider. I see this A LOT in western pleasure classes. The horses have been slowed down so much that they have to rely on using thier heads and necks in order to remain in a canter. These are typically the same horses that are very heavy on the forehand (rider error) and seem to drag themselves around instead of working off their hind quarters.

Additionally, an inexperienced rider maybe heavy handed and hitting the horse in the mouth with the bit at every stride causing the horse to toss its head.

    These are just some possibilities.

I was going to order the US racing channel today because I've got the bug and I love following all the horses that Alex tells us about, but a big part of the bug is being able to talk to people here about them and get excited, nervous, happy, sad...it's all about being able to share.

Re: JENNYS ON RADIO, J J JAKE, DR. DORIGHT

Thanks so much to the gals who provided me with websites for information about the horses we've been worrying about. Please forgive me if I'm repeating parts of your posts.

I found unanswered queries about the outcomes of accidents to Jennys and Jake in the thread 'Whatever Happened To' (http://thoroughbredchampions.com/forum/index.php).

That seems to be GOOD news, and I followed it up on the 'Hail & Farewell' page of 'FlyingFilly.com' (http://www.members.aol.com/theflyingfilly/mainhome.htm). Neither Jennys On Radio nor J J Jake is listed there, so I hope it's safe to say they both survived. Susan E, I've sent an email to FlyingFilly to ask if they can confirm.

I'm very sad to report that Dr. Doright was euthanized at Saratoga yesterday. Poor baby.

Thank goodness that Barbaro - and Alex - continue to shine on.

Barbaro- Never had to be whipped to win or to get his attention. He KNEW what he was doing. And don't think about bringing your horse to look him in the eye. He would laugh (nicker) and then take off. Now your horse is looking at his backside. Courage. Will. Determination. Intelligence. Fire. Competetiveness. Desire. Stamina. Toughness. All this rolled into one package some call Bobby, others Barbaro.

Right leg almost healed. Thank you Father.

Left hoof growing. Thank you Father.

Posted by: Greg at August 28, 2006 8:36 PM

Drew et al. re head-bobbing: head-bobbing can occur under two circumstances: (1) the horse is cantering or galloping - it's a natural part of that gait! or (2) if the head bobs at the trot, the horse is lame, i.e. it is favoring a leg which is causing pain.

There is also head-TOSSING, which is considered a "resistance" in the show ring and is thus marked down.

    Hope that helps!

I hope it wasn't the same outcome for Jennys and Jake. Maybe they ARE happy and convalescing at their barns. Let's hope so.

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 28, 2006 8:38 PM

LNB - I read over at Bloodhorse that they were considering surgery, but the injury could very well heal on its own. The reason they are thinking about surgery is because he'll be going to stud in February, and probably want to help him along a little.

Believe it or not, there are all manner of "broken legs" that respond very well to surgery or heal on their own. Hairline fractures, etc., and it depends where the break is. Fortunately, it not an automatic death warrant if a horse "breaks its leg". Bobby's was a catastrophic injury and harder to deal with by far, and poor Saint Liam fell in such a way that his femur broke into 20 pieces, and there was no place to put screws.

Bluegrass Cat will be kicking up his heels with the ladies in no time!

    Team Barbaro:

Fantastic news re the cast change and the radiograph results. Things are going exactly as they should and for that, I am so grateful to see the power of prayer and healing working...its positive energy building on positive energy. All of us play a part no matter how big or small. That's the beauty of all of this family.

I was so sad to hear about Dr. Doright. After talking with Gallant Secret's owner yesterday, I can understand the heartache they go thru when a horse is so gravely injured. These animals are so beautiful and they want to race - they want to fly (or come close to flying). That's one thing Mrs. Fortney alluded to yesterday - that Gallant Secret would look toward the track with a look in her eyes that expressed her desire to race...that knowledge haunts me knowing what happened to her.

Am still planning to go to Fair Hill this coming Saturday...just to observe. If anybody else is coming, let me know if you need coffee...I'll bring some down.

Renee, you and I can help keep Alex sane...Alex, the offer stands for as long as you need it.

Alex, what an article about this site! Congratulations on being such a resource for everyone. And how sad that some people have misused it.

I hope that whatever you decide, you will keep the updates going. Have you thought about adding a course to your Internet marketing about the psychology of the Internet? It does bring out strange behaviors...I follow a few music sites and, while the music is all about peace and love, the posters sometimes rip each other apart. Weird.

As a friend once said, "The more you get to know people, the more you like animals."

Can Dave Wallace tell us why the jockey got off Bernardini as they were going to the post? ESPN cut away and I'm not sure I heard what happened. I was worried that something had gone wrong with him, too. Thank God, it didn't.

JEN--so glad Lawyer Ron won. I liked him at Derby time, too.

Vic, the race caller's post, reduced me to tears. Go Foggy!

ASHLEY--thanks for the post about Eduardo. Has he been able to see Bobby lately?

Prayers for Sluggo, Antonio and Twister. Heaven opens its arms to you.

MIKE C--your comments are interesting. Are you a horseman?

And last but most important, our sweet Bobby! I am SO glad it was the cast that was cracked, and nothing else! You rock! I hope Dr. R gets in some good golf games and I hope someone took you out today to graze. You are one heckuva horse.

I love you so much!!!!! Have a good night eat some Studmuffins, baby carots and relax. Sweet dreams tonight and may the angels hold you safely in their arms and keep you warm.

Barbara Kerr (and anyone else interested),

I got a response from the timesunion writer after I emailed him yesterday about his column re: Barbaro vs. Bernardini. I'll post his response and my reply below:

    Good morning, J.:

Thanks for the thoughtful e-mail. I think Barbaro a noble and incredibly gifted horse. His performance in the Kentucky Derby, as you note, against a powerhouse 20-horse field, was remarkable (keep in mind, more horses weren't entered in the Travers in part because of Bernardini's seeming invincibility).

We'll never know how Barbaro and Bernardini would've fared that Preakness day (though if you judge by speed ratings, Bernardini compares favorably).

My case against Barbaro is this: He will not have raced enough or won enough significant stakes. The Kentucky Derby win is enormous, but it is still only one race, not a season.

To rebut your bulleted points, Barbaro would win Newsmaker of the Year, if such an award for horses existed, but in my mind, Horse of the Year or the Eclipse for 3-year-olds is won on the track, where, if not for Barbaro's phsyical breakdown, he may very well have won those awards.

You may disagree and probably still do so, but write anytime.

    So, I wrote back:

    Hi Brian,
Well, there's still Time Magazine's Person of the Year :) For a horse, Barbaro has made quite a lot of news.

I just hope Bernardini and the key competitors stay healthy so it CAN all be decided on the track. It was a shame to lose Bluegrass Cat Saturday. Awards are becoming more a matter of who survives the process of attrition.

    Hello to all,

I read the post from Jazz about Alex being bashed, that has to end. WE are all adults here and it does'nt have to get PERSONAL, EVER!! You know who you are that Alex was referring to, if you don't having anything nice to say don't visit THIS site. Please reconsider Alex, but I understand if don't want to. It is hard when you are working so, so hard for people and them you get slapped in the face for no apparent reason!!

The majority of us all appreciate your insight and knowledge about the horse industy, thank you again for going the extra mile for us!

Sweet Barbaro, I'm so glad you are continuing to do well each day. I know the fresh air you get each day really helps your recovery. Keep your strength up and listen to your doctors.

Many carrots and scratches!!! You are such a sweetie!!!

J Carson Black - Thanks for all the information. When I hear a broken leg it makes me nervous. That's why this place has been so amazing. I have learned so very much. I even had my best friend check out the Travers on Sunday. He has heard me continually talk about horses. Another convert?

If this is the last post, prayers to Barbaro, Foggy and BGC.

Also to MM, and Mike R.

Thoughts to St Liams and Dr. DoRight's family and all Barbaromaniacs who lost their four legged kids.

    And always, thanks to Alex.

Gotta go home now, hopefully ACN!!

Unlike some of you totally knowledgeable horse people, my only previous equine experience was with my sister's two evil-tempered Shetland ponies on our farm. But there is something about Barbaro, that absolutely gorgeous bay, and his incredible spirit and courage that have totally captured my heart. Life doesn't always offer second chances, but thank goodness, Barbaro has been given that chance. We will continue to hope and pray that he will enjoy a long, wonderful life.

I have been so very grateful for this web site since the horrible day at the Preakness. Bless Alex for his willingness to put his real life on hold for 4-5 hours a day to keep us stoked with the latest information about Barbaro and ultimately about other horses and races. I can't tell him in person, but I want to send a virtual thank-you for everything he has done to keep Barbaro's light shining for all of us.

Alex...thanks for the site and the daily updates, its terrific that you and the site got the front page article...an honor well deserved.

Barbfan (08-27-06) thanks for the comparison stats: Barbaro: 2.01.39 vs. Bernardini: 2.01.60...i had been wondering about the same...Barbaro's got my vote.

thanks to all for the upbeat and heartwarming love and optimism generated by this site on behalf of and inspired by Barbaro....keep praying...believe...claire

Time for me so say goodnight to all here - hopefully not for the last time.

Thank you Alex for all you have done for us. I've learned more here than I might ever have from a book(s).

Thanks to all for your sympathies for our office cat (Twister) that I had to put down today. Without all of your love and support, I'd be a total wreck today. My prayers to all friends that have lost a wonderful pet.

A very special thank you to Dr. R. and Mr. and Mrs. Jackson If not for you, we would not all be here praying for a wonderful champion and inspiration named Barbaro.

And finally, goodnight sweet Barbaro. Keep healing and getting strong. Baby carrots and studmuffins will keep coming until you walk right out of there!

Everyone in FL please stay safe.

He has put so much effort and dedication into keeping all this going for us, it is really a shame a few can spoil it for everyone. So much good has come from this site, please don't let anything happen to it. Mike's not back to normal yet, LITF still needs surgery after his tumors shrink, and our Bobby has to leave NBC and start a family!!!!! We all need to be united towards these common goals. ALEX, has made it possible for us to be part of these miracles that are in progress.

Ryan...like you I've only been taking more of an interest in the racing scene since I met Barbaro, and in that time I've heard about so many breakdowns.

The last was just yesterday at Saratoga...poor Dr.Doright. I find it really hard to deal with when the last thing you hear about these beautiful animals is 'broke down. vanned off'and you so desperately want to hear that they're ok.
My thoughts are with those who loved Dr.Doright.

I've never known of anyone quite like you. Thank you a million times over for leading us through these 3 incredible, emotionally trying months. We've been down, but our spirits have soared many more times than not. The very best thing about you is that you find it important to share information you have. That is one mark of an excellent character. You have done everything with grace, calm and tons of class. Thanks..

I am convinced that Barbaro is the most influential and important horse, and maybe nonhuman animal, who has ever lived. He has set new standards for what is possible and what can be done, and enormous benefit will come out of his just being Barbaro.

OK heres how to settle the Barbaro/Bernardini dispute..

IF both were sound and entered in a race, WHO'S THE MORNING LINE FAVORITE??????...

BARBARO-undefeated against all 3 yr olds in training on the derby trail, won on ALL SURFACES. WON DERBY , A 20 HORSE FIELD IN THE LARGEST MARGIN IN 35 YEARS..35 years of derbys covers over 600 horses..

BERNARDINI-won a prakeness that was practically given up to BARBARO with a weak field, won the Jim Dandy in the slop on the front end with a 5 horse field, won the Travers against 5 alowance type horses and a Derby 2nd place finisher who was broken down...

YOU TELL ME THE MORNING LINE FAVORITE...

I'll go on record here today, Bernardini will not finish in the top 3 IF he runs in the classic and he'll never get the front against Lava Man..

Uh...Mike C., I think you painted a rather stark and deceptive picture of the differences between Barbaro and Bernardini. Bernardini's margin in the Travers was the largest since 1979. He had a Beyer of 116. Any trainer will tell you how good that horse is, and that they have not yet reached the limits of his ability. Tom Albertrani is not a boastful man, and yet he thinks of this horse in the same breath as Cigar.

What good will it do for Barbaro to denegrate Bernardini? The simple fact is, we will never know how they would have fared against each other. I, for one, can't imagine what the Preakness would have been like if Barbaro wouldn't have broken down. Barbaro, after all, "galloped" the stretch in four strides. Barbaro won on three different surfaces, and was undefeated going into the Preakness, and he did win by the largest margin since the fifties. And anybody who saw him still gets shivers from his dominance.

But we don't know. We might have had an Affirmed/Alydar situation.

Barbaro's running his own race now. Nothing can take away from the fact that he has inspired thousands, maybe even millions. He has gone beyond mere racing, he has gone beyond a Triple Crown.

But give Bernardini his due. He is not a second-rate horse. To say that not only tries to bring him down, but it brings Barbaro down as well.

This board still has more heart, soul, prayers and love than ANY I have even been on.
On another site where I am able to do so, we just knock out the nasties ....zap you're gone.
Mike C., that issue came up with me too. That Our Bobby has been undefeated on all surfaces.
I am so glad the cast change went well, I was wondering when, surprised there was only one crack.

Alex, I just want to add my Thanks to you for all that you have done in providing this outlet to all of us. I have met so many wonderful people and learned so much. I am one of the people with no "horse knowledge" before I found this site. Boy has this site changed my life! Just one example of a life change I can see as I look around my living room. My coffee table is presently covered with books about horses. All of these books have been suggested by the wonderful people on this site.

Just one more thought...I was so proud of the Barbaromaniacs when I saw the posting by KF regarding Dr. R's birthday party. I was thrilled & amazed that we could come together to raise that much money for the Barbaro Fund in honor of Dr. R!
I always marvel at what can happen when people join together for a greater, higher collective good!

not a nasty just someone who wants comments to be for comments tired of wading through all the rest. not a troll either and I would never be on an anti-barbaro site.

    J Carson Black...I agree.
Please guys, give Bernardini a break. His trainers are good enough to call Alex and give him updates for us. Tom Albertrani is one of the good guys, at least from what I've heard he seems a really nice bloke, and I think he'd be really disappointed and sad to hear all this.

I for one wish Bernardini all the luck in the world and just hope he manages to have a career that doesn't end in heartbreak, so please try to be nice and not so resentful of his successes. He's a beautiful and special horse, with spirit and personality, and he's loved...just like our Barbaro.

Can we not just wish him and his people well?

Hi all: Hope everyone's weekend went well. NY/NJ was pretty wet this weekend so my horses were unable to train. They are supposed to go Tuesday. Hope the weather holds out.

Loved the story on Foggy. You keep fighting boy. Make those tumors shrink.

To RFC: My condolences on the loss of Antonio. Just remember he's on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge; no longer in any pain and happy with all his new found friends. When the time comes, you'll see him again and he will be thrilled to see you. I went through the same thing four years ago with my cat. She was twenty years old and had thyroid problems for years. She then was diagnosed with Leukemia and there was nothing that could be done. It is the worst feeling in the world to have to make that decision but I knew she was suffering and it wouldn't have been fair to keep her around for my benefit. I look forward to seeing her again though. She was my baby and actually the first cat I ever owned. I was a dog person before that. Now I have two more cats and I love them to death. Every now and again I think of her though. You take care.

To My dear sweet Barbaro: You be strong baby and keep fighting. Your doing great. Baby steps will lead the way home. Love ya,

    ###### non-Barbaro-related bad horse joke alert

Susan E (8/28, 8:18 pm) said: "Hoping for many more days and nights posting with all ya'll,"

And I wondered why it had taken so long for this particular bad horse joke to energe. "Posting" is something an English rider does on a horse; it is the word for what the rider does when the horse trots, rising with every other beat. The multi-meaning never occurred to me before that particular usage. THANK YOU SUSAN E!

Forgive me, for I have punned again. But what do I know? I'm just a half-baked Kosher Ham from Hammond . . . who is witnessing the Continuing Miracle in Progress Whose Name Is Barbaro, and sometimes getting silly in the process! Forgive me if I amuse too much . . . .

After googling Barbaro several x's a day until it was more difficult to find, I found TWR site. No, I don't watch horse racing, nor do I own a horse (wish I did). I am just an animal lover concerned about Barbaro's well being. I've only been posting for a short time now. I've so enjoyed the humorous posts, then came the more sad ones concerning sick pets. Along with the sad posts, an outpouring of empathy from others who have been through it.

Good wishes, baskets for Bobby and NBC staff started flooding in. A special Dr's birthday was planned here on this site. So much good has come from here. Of course with the good there must always be the other side, the bad. Most of us here are so thankful to all the hours of work that Alex puts forth for us to hear the news of our sweet Barbaro. So again Alex, a heartfelt thank you for all you do.

Sweet Bobby you have a very peaceful night. Sweet dreams precious one! May God bless you with complete healing to your bones and hoof.

I hope this is not the last time I say goodnight to all of you. It has been a fun time here, a lot of love, laughter, caring and good wishes for Bobby's healing. I don't think there has ever been a horse that has brought so many people together for good. Barbaro has captured many hearts (including mine!) I hope that good will continue right here.

    Have a blessed night.
Believe in the miracle of Barbaro!

Guys...I just heard on the NBC(TV) Network News that among the passengers on this weekend's ill-fated flight was 16 yr old Paige Winters, who had come to Lexington to buy a horse.....

    God bless her soul...

    Confused-
To answer your question.... Do you know how to SCROLL??? Please scroll by what you do not want to read out of the thousand people that do it you are the only one complaining. If you keep it up this site will be closed down and you will have nothing to complain about. :) I am not trying to be mean but this is the second time I have seen your post.

Alex has posed an interesting POLL from the discussion board, that I can not access via the link provided. Any others like me who are stuck "out here"? I want to register my position in the Poll - on the question whether I watch more horseracing since coming to this site, and the answer is absolutely yes. Now I default to TVG during the day when doing "mindless" work/chores in front of my computer or elsewhere, whereas formerly I would default to Animal Planet or TV Land mostly. Interesting question and I can't get into the forum to have my position counted. CJ in Hammond IN

Correction re the Poll - not because of this site, but, BECAUSE OF BARBARO, of course. Same answer holds. CJ

    Pamela...it's awful :-(
I heard more details today on the news over here. They're saying that the wrong runway was used, and not the one supposed to be for commercial flights. It's tragic. Is it right there were quite a few people on that flight who were Kentucky horse people?

It is true - Barbaro and Bernardini ....... clearly both talented - extraordinary - well loved horses. We know only that they have gone onto different paths in life - and we do not and cannot know what "could have been." And so .... I agree with many of you ............. let us be supportive - and joyful for the successes of others - and grateful for safe crossings at the finish line. I cannot help but think that Barbaro would want it this way.

    Good Evening, Team Barbaro!

Am not feeling too well so just want to bid all the Barbaromaniacs a good night. Need to get some sleep.

Alex, Tim, KF, NBC, the Jacksons, Michael Matz, Edgar, Peter and Kim, Eduardo, Messaging, Luke the Pony...good night. Sweet dreams and get ready for another great day tomorrow.

Just wanted to tuck in two wonderful, inspiring horses...LITF and Barbaro.

LITF, hope you had a comfortable, spirited day, my Long Time Sun. There are many of us here praying for you. You are so brave in my eyes...I'm a cancer survivor and if I can do it, so can you.

Barbaro, you have inspired so much good in the last few months. Unbelievable. You are a true catalyst - and a darn good looking one at that...:) Good night, sweet one. Dream of Michael Matz or Peter Brette coming to visit...and taking you outdoors. Shine on you crazy diamond.

You do realize that there are a couple of hundred more or less goofy women and a few good men posting on this site, hmmmm? (And a few who are......uh......disputatious?) Do you really think that a whole slew of the other 11,800 logging on every day aren't reading all this wonderful stuff? It ain't just the updates, though they are terrific and very helpful.

We all know you're tired. We all know you've gone above and beyond the call of duty. We all know we can be a pain in the butt sometimes. But we love you, pal. You're our StudMuffin and our WebDaddy. We couldn't get along without you and I bet you'd miss us too. Ya think?

If we can do anything to help maintain an even strain, we will. Could you use an assistant? Just ask. Please. But keep this place alive if you can, because that's what it is. Alive.

Love ya, big guy. See you in the morning.

    j carson black.

    Mr. Black.

If you think that Bernardini has come even close to beating the quality of horses that Barbaro has beaten, you need to take off your glasses, or read a few books on horseracing.

Mr. Black it says pace makes a race, when you go to the front and walk on the lead unpressured its near impossible to lose. When you do this against inferior horses you have to be quite a pig to lose.

The quality of horses Bernardini beat is very questionable, if you think different , its fine, its your opinion and I think very little of it.

Cigar , unbeaten in 16 was not a GREAT horse, he beat inferior horses for 2 years, was he good, YES. Great...NO...
Until Bernardini gets headed in a race and comes back or takes a lead...or runs against true grade 1 competion he will be a GOOD horse not great....

Like I said, LAVA MAN won't let him walk and dont forget about a horse named SHOWING UP who just may try dirt again in the WEAK older horse dirt division this year....

Alex, I do so hope you can find your way clear to keeping this board up. I can't tell you how much it means to me, and I'm sure the rest of the Barbaro family, to be able to come in and check on our boy. I like to read the articles you post and hear all the latest on horses that are racing. This has been an education for me!
And I would miss you, and every one of our family!

Posted by: Toby at August 29, 2006 12:11 AM

Gosh...call me crazy (and I know many of you do),
but I cannot believe that Barbaro would want Bernardini to know what a nice horsey he is....
He would want to kick his big, horsey B-hind...

Horses have a complex social structure in which they vie for supremacy. I believe that Barbaro would want to be the Leader Of The Pact... Not Mr. Horsey Popular.

In the movie Seabuscuit, when describing the first time he saw the horse...

"Smith would say later that the horse looked right through him...as if to say "What the hell are you looking at?...Who do you think you are?"

...not, "Hi, I am the Biscuit and I am a Pisces."

I understand what you guys are saying, but this is a SPORT...you are supposed to have favorites and you are supposed to want to crush your opponent! You want to yell and scream and jump up and down that your horse is better than the other horse...and, most of all...you want your horse to prove it!

This doesn't mean you wish the other horse ill!

Let's not be so sentimental about this that we forever think of Barbaro as those awful last moments in the Preakness...Let's make the impenetrable image in our minds that of Barbaro
thundering down the race track, breathing fire and spitting flames...Going Mach II with his MANE ON FIRE...

AND, kicking horsey butt and taking horsey names!

    Thanks, guys...

Posted by: Pamela at August 29, 2006 12:12 AM

Hey, Lyn, I've been singing Shine on, you Crazy Diamond for days, and I didn't know why...cue Twilight Zone music...

The AZ and UK folks are willing to give poor Bernardini a break. I live in AZ and have relatives in the UK. Good on you, mates!

Bobby, keep on fusing that pastern. I can't wait for the day when your leg is cast-free!

And extra prayers for all the people on that plane, the horse people like Jeff Williams who used to come to this site...tears are filling my eyes. And for all the lost pets and horses, my heart goes out to the people who love them.

    And go, Foggy!

Heck, I like Lava Man too being more or less on the west coast, but if Bernardini is the best horse, I'm still a happy camper. A good competitive race with everybody home safe and sound is all I ask.

Posted by: barbara in az at August 29, 2006 12:17 AM

    It's Ms. Black.

And if you are slamming the "weak crop" of horses this year, then you're slamming Bobby, too.

I'm not saying that Bernardini is the Second Coming, or that he doesn't have a lot to prove. But I think he will prove it.

Talk to the trainers who have seen the horse work. It's entirely possible they don't know anything about horseracing either.

Guess I've lost that competitive fire, 'cause for me it really is just watching the horses race, with the best one winning that day. Would much rather watch a close one that a walkover by my favorite any day in any sport...

Barbaro has changed my life for sure, brought me back to an old love, but it doesn't mean I only cherish the images of his racing days. He's quite the fellow in the latest photos, casts and all...

    WARNING: LONG REMINISCING POSITIVE POST!

Some of you were talking about how you found this site. Well,Jo of Central Fl posted this website on an AOL horse racing message board and I've been here ever since, though I can't remember the exact date.
Like others, I lurked awhile before I started posting. The AOL board was loaded with nasty people and it was very depressing. When I found this site, it was like a breath of fresh air. Here were positive people, all with hope for this magnificient horse! I had found a home. May sound stupid to some, but I really love this place! I have learned so very much from so many different people! I had not been involved with horses for several years, and even then I was involved in show jumping and hunting and knew little about racing. And it has rekindled something in me and brought me back to something I love and enjoy so very much, horses! It's my goal to get back and involved with horses and I'm not sure when or where that will be, but it will happen.
Sorry for my long windedness but I am so AMAZED and AWED by this horse, Barbaro, and all he has done and accomplished, and how much more he will do for people and horses. His path in life is not the path with Bernardini and those still racing, it is new path that he is foraging as he goes along. Look at the Barbaro effect. Just awesome the awareness he has given to so many.
Ok, I'll be quiet now and sign off...

Go Barbaro Go! Always in my prayers..

Thank you Alex, from the bottom of my heart.

haha! you crack me up, Ms. Black! Now, where'd that chicken head off to?

I owe a lot to Barbaro and his tail of courage...not just spiritually and hopefully, but creatively, as well.
That doesn't mean I don't think other horses deserve their day in the glorious sun.

Bernardini, Lava Man, etc., they're beautiful creatures doing what they've been bred and trained to do. While they would fight for supremacy in the wild (if they ever met), they aren't in the wild.

Alex, I owe you a lot of thanks, too.
as we say down here, you're good people.

Barbaro, my sweet baboo...I'll say goodnight to you later after I watch a little Andre Agassi...don't worry, big boy, you're still my numero uno!

But before it gets any later, I'd like to share what this site means to me...from the start I made it clear that I'm a horse lover and not much of a racing lover...so now I lovingly shake my fist at lots of you who have "made" me watch more racing in the past few months than I've seen in my entire life...albeit with eyes squinted and peeking between my fingers in fear of what I might see.

This has been a place of great information and education to me...primarily about Barbaro, of course, but radiating out from him all the wonderful articles--good news and bad--about so many other of God's beautiful equine creatures!

And I so much appreciate those of you who have shared information with this novice without EVER making me feel stupid for asking questions! For example, just in the last few days I saw a reference to barrel racing...what on earth is that, I wondered. And within minutes (thanks, Barb!) I had an excellent explanation of something totally unknown to me before.

Despite personal differences on some subjects (I, for one, have nothing against Bernardini - it's not his fault!), the blessing here is that ??? numbers of people join together to make things happen...treats for our boy, gifts for Alex and the NBC staff, a great birthday surprise for a great doctor, campaigning for track safety, badgering our national representatives to support the anti-slaughter bill, supporting those among us with sick animals or whose pets have recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge or who have human medical problems....DO I NEED TO GO ON? I think not...except to say that I pray I "see" you all tomorrow because I think this group, with its collective energy, can work all sorts of miracles!

    God bless us everyone!

It is - when you exercise riders ride, both in the countryside and on the tracks - do you use the extreme short stirrups as the jockey does in the race, or do you ride with longer stirrups as more "balanced" than extreme forward (2-point) seat? A question that never occurred to me before this week, btw. Thinking of you riding in the great outdoors, can't picture you doing it with the extreme jockey-type stirrup length and seat. INQUIRING MINDS . . . Thanks.

Just checking in on Barbaro and Fog. My neice is visiting me from TX this week so I haven't read post today other than updates from Alex. So glad to hear my sweet boy is doing well after the cast change, that always makes me nervous. Is there any news on Fog? I went over to the discussion board but couldn't find anything new. Hope he is doing good!! I wish he had an update site like this one. If anybody knows any news I would appreciate it. cindy a

Wonderful news about Barbaro. So please you recovered from anesthesia and all news is positive. We love you, our boy!

Alex, what a special article about you and this website. We are all so proud of you! We appreciate all your diligence in bringing us news about our Barbaro and all the other wonderful horses and horse news, in general.

**Dear Alex, I just read your post (missed a lot of what has been going on) and need to tell you we really love what you've done for us by bringing us together and allowing us the honor of being able to express our love for Barbaro and know we aren't alone and yes, perhaps, learning more about horses than we did before we found you.. or you found us.. which was it? Anyhow, you have as much class, Alex, as Dr. R, Michael, Peter, Kathy, the NB staff, the Jackson's and of course, our friend, Barbaro. You are truly a gentleman and I'd like to think the rest of us can act with as much class and dignity as you do and as the the most special boy who brought us together, showing us what true class really is, Barbaro! It's easy for us to say he has class but let's make him proud of us, the way he's made us so proud of him!!

Here's to you, Alex.. I raise my glass!!

Just a note to remind everyone that we are in the homestretch for the Anti Slaughter Bill. The rally is a week from tomorrow and the vote is a week from Thursday. PLEASE. if you haven't contacted your representatives yet, PLEASE do it this week!! We have to get this passed.

In case this site does shut down, please don't forget this important cause.

We are all here for Barbaro.....let's do this for him! And this is an issue that is near and dear to the Jackson's. Let's do it for them. They have all done so much for us.

    PLEASE!!!!!

    Goodnight Alex and All

I believe I speak for others when I say that although I have a wonderful family and many friends, I honestly do not know how I would have gotten through the days following the "L" announcement without you all and this website.

And now we can rejoice in how far Barbaro has come and how he is truly beating all the odds.

I know we are here for as long as it takes - good days and even bad days.

We have felt for our friends that have had to let their pets go, we are praying for Foggy and we pray for the animals that have lost the fight and continued on to the Rainbow Bridge.

I agree with Nancy - God Bless us All and God Bless This Most Wonderful of Animals, Barbaro for bringing the very best out of us all.

You know I felt sad for Michael Martz, talking about Barbaro, and what might have been, but I really believe it is us human beings that are sad.I know I am terribly sad that he will never run another race.
I truly think Barbaro has moved on,I don't think he is sad he can't race,I think he is happy he can walk !He can walk again ,in two casts!
He took all the skills his trainers and handlers
and jockey taught him,and used them to survive.
His discipline, his spirit, his courage, his intelligence,a lesser horse may have given up,
but not this Champion of all Champions.
I don't think he cares if Bernandini is horse of the year. That is a sporting award for an active
    athelete.
The race Barbaro is attempting to win is of a magnitude that far exceeds all of that.
So we should not be sad.
When Barbaro walks out of NBC,he will have accomplished something far more difficult than
a horse race, and the whole world is going to know it and rejoice.
Good night Barbaro, and god bless all your connections, and supporters. We love you.!

Yikes...seems I should read the posts before I post...hey, I didn't know anyone was slamming Bernardini...well, of course I wish him the best...to do otherwise is foolish...Remember,
a champion is measured by the formidability of the competition....

I am afraid that Bernardini just isn't my type...oh, I certainly wish him well...but I have my eye on a horse called DISCREET CAT....NOW THAT IS A HORSE.....

For Twister's and Antonio's people, I am truly sorry. You'll miss your babies till you meet again. They'll watch over you.

Gulf Coast Maniacs...sigh. Here we go again. Go away, Ernesto, go away! Keep safe and don't hesitate to shout out if you need anything. We will find a way. If we can surprise Dean Richardson and raise that much $, we can do anything.

Bobby, I am tucking you in early tonight. Family calls. You know how that is. I love you, Big Horse, and I'm thrilled to pieces about your progress today. Do you know, the St. Louis Rams are trying on the Barbaro Effect! Yes, they have a billboard showing a very sad-looking Ram with the slogan "Believe".

Anyway, be extra careful tonight and I'll see you tomorrow, one way or the other.

    BARBARO NATION:

This belongs on the Forum, strictly speaking, but I don't have time to go there now, so please forgive me. If anyone could spare a good thought tonight, my family could use it. Tomorrow my niece has to undergo a C-section due to complications; she isn't due for another month. We are concerned, needless to say. Julie, the baby, her husband, and their son, and the rest of us, could use all the good vibes we can get.

Thanks, good night everyone, and hope to see you tomorrow.

Alex...you're the best. I don't know what else to say.

I like many of you love Barbaro very much. I am so proud of him and happy that he is doing well. Again, I think many of these writers are jealous (they have nothing to write about when it comes to Barbaro, that was taken over by the national press).

Alex, congrats on the lovely article. It was great to see you sitting at your computer just like us. Think about what a great community you have fostered here? What I admire the most about you is that you give us the news in such a respectful manner.

I have learned so much about horse racing from you and from reading the other posts. I am so sorry you have been attacked. It is so wrong. You are appreciated. Thank you for all that you do.

    Hello Barbaro,

I hope you had a wonderful day of baby carrots, spearmints, grazing and amusing yourself with your Medical Team.

I would love to be able to post to you a "good night" every night, but that may come to an end. If it does Barbaro, I will be out here, wishing you a "good morning", a great day of healing and grazing and a "good night" with only sweet dreams. I love you so much Barbaro.
Go to sleep now Honey. Get plenty of rest so tomorrow can be another day of healing. Remember, only sweet dreams tonight Barbaro. I wish a lifetime of sweet dreams for you.

    Good evening everyone-

REMINDER ABOUT HR 503 ANTI-HORSE SLAUGHTER BILL

We are members of a horse advocacy group formed in honor of Barbaro, (still in planning stages as far as name and mission statement), and want to let everyone know about our progress re: HR 503, the anti-horse slaughter bill that's coming up for a vote in the House of Representatives on Sept. 7.

So far, we have contacted (via e-mail / fax / standard mail) all of the congressmen not listed as co-sponsors of this legislation, (237!), focusing extra energy on Texas and Illinois, the states where the slaughterhouses are located, and we intend to contact all by phone as they return to DC from now until the vote on the 7th.

We'd like to issue a general invitation to help us with the phone campaign. The congressmens' phone numbers are found at their websites, which can be accessed at www.house.gov with the zip-code + 4.
You can also access this information at www.visi.com/juan/congress.

If you could then post at the forum (see HR 503 phone campaign folder) when you have called a congressperson, we can keep track of who still needs contacting.

Anyone who wants to help out with e-mails can go to www.hsus.org and www.saplonline.org to contact the congressperson in your district. To find out more about HR 503, you can go to www.house.gov.

Thanks to everyone working on this issue. Hopefully together we can make a difference.
The Barbaro Effect in full force!

I have been reading posts since day one, never posted on this or any other site before. I am a lifelong horse racing fan and i have 2 retired thoroughbreds I rescued. Wanted to share my personal experience of July 15. I drove 2 hours to Calder to offer Edgar my encouragement and see one of my favorites - Lost In The Fog. That night was the first vigil and on the way home at exactly 7pm, I was praying for Barbaro (had not been able to think of anything else) and I looked to see where I was and I was passing Palm Meadows (Barbaro's Florida home all winter) and there was a beautiful sunset and I knew right then we were going to get our miracle. Pray so much the same for Fog. Sent a basket of carrots to Fog last week, got a great letter and picture back from the florist who delivered (Ana's Florist that I got from this site). Please call your reps, I have been working on HR503 for years. There are many states with little or no co-sponsors, now is the time to hound them. Remember, 2000 of our precious horses are geting slaughtered every week while we are trying get this banned. Love you Barbaro!

Sweet dreams to you too, Fog...keep your pecker up and keep fighting those odds, sweetie. I love you too XXXX

Hello, Everyone, (and I hope Alex has a bit of time to read this one too).

Just checking in after a week in Florida, then back to Michigan again. I tried the Chat, but had some keyboard problems so came back here. But first, as always, I checked the ever-precious updates. I am so very happy to see that our champion is still on the mend, and doing better every day.

I don't know the details about the "troll problems" that I am getting little glimpses of. I HAD been in the happy habit of reading EVERY post, but, since it has been a week, such activity is not practical, so, I have simply skimmed the boards.

What I do surmise, is that we are all connected, here, because of our love, (for the very very most part), of Barbaro, and all things horse, and all things Barbaro, and Mike, and Edgar, and the Jacksons, and Tim , and ALEX.

We are privileged to gather here at kind generosity of our hosts, Tim and Alex.

I am so grateful, and blessed to have been able to visit, laugh, cry, pray, learn, and share, with everyone here.

Please be encouraged, Alex. You are such a blessing. Words are too poor. Here is our Love, and thankfullness.................

Posted by: Otherlyn at August 29, 2006 1:33 AM

Barbaro might care if Bernardini took his oats or his tribe of mares (when he has them) but he doesn't care if he takes Horse of the Year. Animals are pure truth, they care about what really matters, you can't get by without your food or your close friends/family but you can get by without an award.

Thanks Sally for giving us the update on the party in Cancun. I hope one of them thinks to take a photo to post here for us so we can enjoy the festivities.

Bernardini, is a georgious boy, and a great hacehorse. If Barbaro were competing, ther is no doubt in my mind that he would fly past Bernardini, and all the others. He is just THAT special horse-in-a-million. But Barbaro now has other, and more important work to do.

It is not productive, to dis Bernardini. He is doing the best he can,and his people seem to be thrilled and proud of him.

And, as I said, he is a beautiful boy. Just look at his photos.... see the fire in his eye and the strength of his spirit. I Love him too... and wish him well ... and hope for many safe "flights" for him.

    Fog to have new exam
    By CHUCK DYBDAL
Lost in the Fog will be examined Thursday by veterinarians from the University of California-Davis to determine if the three cancerous tumors discovered two weeks ago have shrunk. Lost in the Fog has been treated with the steroid dexamethasone since last week.
Depending on what they find, veterinarians will then set a course of treatment. If there has been no growth or the tumors have shrunk, options include chemotherapy or radiation, said trainer Greg Gilchrist. One of the tumors is located near his abdomen, just below his spine, and is inoperable.

Lost in the Fog is stabled at the Golden Gate barn of Gilchrist. He leaves his stall every day and sometimes is taken to the track to watch other horses. His appetite remains good, Gilchrist said, and he continues to nip at his trainer, a sign that he is in good spirits.

I just went to drf and saw this article, I hope it wasn't posted already, if please excuse. cindy a

Thought you might like to read this article on a new break through in cancer research that might benefit our friend "Lost in the Fog".

WASHINGTON: Scientists have identified a small synthetic compound that causes cancer cells to self destruct, throwing up promise of effective and personalised anti-cancer treatment in the future.

Most living cells contain a protein called procaspase-3 which, when activated, changes into the executioner enzyme caspase-3 and initiates programmed cell death called apoptosis.

In cancer cells, however, the signalling pathway to procaspase-3 is broken. As a result cancer cells escape destruction and grow into tumours.

Paul J. Hergenrother, a professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and other researchers identified a synthetic compound that directly activates procaspase-3 and induces apoptosis, reported science portal EurekAlert.

The researchers screened more than 20,000 structurally diverse compounds and found that the compound called PAC-1 (procaspase activating compound one) killed cancer cells in 23 tumours obtained from a local hospital.

The researchers tested the compound's efficacy in cell cultures and in three mouse models of cancer.

"This is the first in what could be a host of organic compounds with the ability to directly activate executioner enzymes," Hergenrother said.

"By bypassing the broken pathway, we can use the cells' own machinery to destroy themselves," he said.

"The potential effectiveness of compounds such as PAC-1 could also be predicted in advance and patients could be selected for treatment based on the amount of procaspase-3 found in their tumour cells."

Such personalized medicine strategies are preferential to therapies that rely on general cytotoxins, the researchers say, and could be the future of anti-cancer therapy.

Many cancer treatments use cytotoxins to kill the actively and rapidly dividing cancer cells.

Maybe, this is the miracle we've been praying for.

    Evening All!

There have been so many wonderful posts today. It's so uplifting to start my day with an ACN message and end it here with everyone passing on their good thoughts and prayers to so many.

Alex--such a nice article and I hope there will only be more to recognize the wonderful work you do every day with your horses and on this site!

Barbaro has so transcended what he would have been had he not been injured and continued racing. He is now a catalyst for so much good-- bringing us all together to raise money for The Barbaro Fund, helping to pass anti-slaughter legislation, and an Extreme Makeover for Mike Rea!?!
To quote the hottie, Ty Pennington: "LET'S DO IT!!"

As you fall asleep tonight, or get up in the morning, please say a prayer or send your kind thoughts to all the victims and survivors of Katrina, both human and animal, on this first anniversary.

Bless all the victims of the Lexington plane crash.

Strength and sunshine to you, sweet Barbaro.

Good Night, Special One. Have been away from the site for many days, but have stayed close to you in thought. Am thrilled to hear that you are still doing great on your road to recovery and that the healing in the right leg continues.

Thanks for the great coverage on Dr. R's birthday party. Sounds like it was really a success.

Nice article about you in the Cecil Whig, by the way.. I look forward to tomorrow, to news of ACN for our boy, to hearing of your morning rides, and everything everyone here in this wonderful community from far and wide has to share.

Some more good news about "Lost in the Fog".

    Posted: 8/24/2006 7:42:47 PM

Lost in the Fog undergoing treatment to shrink tumors

Champion sprinter Lost in the Fog is receiving oral and injected treatments designed to shrink the tumors in his spleen and along his spine, and trainer Greg Gilchrist has not given up hope for the Lost Soldier colt.

"He's doing well. I was just giving him a handful of carrots a minute ago," Gilchrist said from his barn at Golden Gate Fields on Thursday evening. "We are treating him to try to shrink the tumors he has.

"If we could do that, they would become operable, and then he would have a chance. We've gone to a little more drastic measures using a few drugs that we didn't have before."

Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog will undergo a sonogram in ten to 12 days to check on his progress. In the meantime, Lost in the Fog is living in his stall, eating, and walking twice a day, much like a normal horse.

"The horse is doing well. He's not in any pain," Gilchrist said. "He's eating well, and he's holding his weight pretty darn well for a horse in his condition. He's not the happiest I've ever seen him, but he's not a depressed horse."

Good nite, beautiful Barbaro. I'm so happy that you are feeling soooo good! Sweet dreams and here's hoping your "Daddy" Michael can take you out to graze tomorrow in bright sunshine. You are such an ambassador for good will. I am so proud of you and all your "people" too.

Good nite to you, too, Lost In the Fog. Hope you have a nite of tumor shrinking. Keep being a big, brave boy! I think your name is awesome and I do love your funky blaze!

I hope Dr. R has a few nice days off to just play some golf or maybe sleep a little!

Also, my best to the many "unsung heros" at NBC who have done so much for Bobby for over three months. You are amazing!

My continued best to Mike Rea - such an example for all!

Thank you Alex! You are amazing and you mean so much to all of us who depend on this incredible site! You are a remarkably loving person!

Has anyone else noticed that Bobby's "star" is really an abstract "heart"? Is it any wonder? Bobby is all heart! Sleep well, sweet prince! Love you, Judy

I count my blessings every day, because if you complain, things will always get worse!! Thanks to Alex and DR. R. and the staff at NBC for all the good dedicated care given to Barbaro and all the other animal friends at the Hospital. I know they are true believers in the healing powers of one that is greater than we. I light candles for Bobby and those who need prayers, it is just a great way to express our feelings.

I do want Alex to know that there are plenty of concerned people out here that don't post much but read your updates every day. Thanks so very much for your extraordinary effort on Barbaro's behalf and ours as well. You are Numero Uno in my book!!!

Good night sweet and spunky Bobby.

Precious Barbaro:) Your candle has been lit and praying that our Heavenly Father will give you a night filled with lots of love and healing. May you wake up to a beautiful day tomorrow. Amen

Lost in the Fog:) Your candle has also been lit and praying to our Heavenly Father to let us see yet another "miracle horse" in you. May He shrink those "terrible tumors" and keep your road to recovery free from discomfort and filled with positive healing. Amen

Barbaro Family:) May you have a restful sleep and arise to another glorious day. God bless you and yours.

Thank you Alex for all the effort and time you put into this website. There aren't enough words to express how very much you are appreciated by the Barbaromaniacs for all that you do.

Father, thank you for "THE MIRACLE OF BARBARO".

I have been watching and betting on racing for over sixty years and this years Kentucky Derby, I saw the greatest racehorse in my life, Barbaro, was awesome, and he just crushed the Derby field.
Barbaro had an unconventional breeze at Churchill-fast and a very long stride (over 25 feet). His internal speed figures were super, best of the week. Barbaro never really quickened--he simply extended his long stride down the stretch and showed complete superiority. He had a stride length of 24 feet going into the first turn, on the backstretch and on the far turn. He maintained the same basic speed for each quarter to the end--but when he hit the stretch, he extended his stride length to 24.9 feet. Thus, he covered the last quarter in fewer strides than he took for each previous quarter. For another horse to beat him that horse would have to have been on even terms at the quarter pole and had a stride length of a minimum of 25 feet down the stretch. And that would have been a real stretch. I believe he would have gone on to win the triple crown and set many track records, he was not only the best racehorse
I ever saw, but was in a class by himself.

Precious Bobby, I hope you are getting a good healing sleep. You probably will miss Dr. Dean today but you will be in good hands with your "family". I bet it feels like old times with Michael walking you. He needs you to be strong, give him a nudge for me. I love you and will check on you as always when I wake up. Sleep comfy big guy.

Sweet Foggy, You are such a trooper. I hope you are sleeping comfy and dreaming of all good things, like eating alot of carrots. I will check on you too when I get up, until then I love you, sweetie, keep fighting, you are not alone, we are all with you.

    I love you, sweetie XXXX

Good morning, Alex and all...I'm so happy to be saying this this morning! :-D
(Thank you for another day, Alex X)

Cindy...thank you for that bit of news of the Fog. It's nice to know that he's getting little outings to the track to watch the other horses...and he's still scoffing his food down and nipping, which is even better! :-)

A gorgeous morning here in North yorkshire...but not sure how long it will last! I hope everyone in the hurricane's path are safe this morning.
