Barbaro Updates: 58

updates are now here.

Update 554: Horsetalk from New Zealand continues to be one of the most persistant online sites with Barbaro updates: Barbaro injuries highlight need for laminitis research. Again they cited this site re: yesterday's cast change. If you look at their homepage Barbaro has his own section of the site. Awesome!

Update 553: Just spoke to Peter Brette, and while he was unable to visit Barbaro today he had heard from Michael who had visited, and all remains well. He also noted that Round Pond appeared to come out of yesterday's fine effort in good shape.

An interesting poll question has been posed on the discussion board: Have you started watching more horseracing because of Barbaro?.

Update 552: Thank you Cecil Whig for the lovely front page article: Online outpouring of support for Barbaro.

I asked Michael this morning if Dr. Richardson had finally gone away for a few days (this was after Michael had given me the morning report). Michael said he had, and he also said he had told Dr. Richardson that given he was away on vacation there really was no need for the morning updates. They then wondered a little about what I would do ? So I guess (and HOPE) Dr. Richardson will still be calling in the reports!

Finally, something I had meant to get to for a little while, Mercy T. had a great idea to support Mike Rea, it is posted on the discussion board: A Barbarian Response to MikeRea's Letter. All feedback and support would obviously be welcome!

Update 551: Dave Wallace (Tom Albertrani's assistant) just called to give us a quick update on Bernardini. A few things about the Travers itself. When they were leading Bernardini over for the Travers he was very cool, calm and collected. Dave said it was very impressive to see considering his youth and all the attention he was getting. After the Travers, leaving the test barn (all winners and some other runners are tested after a race to check for drugs etc.) he was bouncing and was very full of himself, as Dave noted, just proud of himself. Dave also mentioned Bernardini's reaction to Javier Castellano's light tap of the whip with his left hand ... which caused Bernardini to swish his tail and pin his ears, almost as if Bernardini was wondering what the problem was since he was winning so easily at that point! (I think I noted something similar in my update directly after the race.)

Anyway, Dave said he has come out of the race in great shape. He will hand walk around the shedrow for a few days (probably about three days) before he goes back to the track and starts training again. I will plan to follow up with Dave later in the week to see how he is progressing.

Update 550: New Bolton Center's press release concerning yesterday's cast change: Barbaro has cast change:

Veterinarians at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital changed the right hind leg cast of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro yesterday, Sunday, August 27. "The cast was changed because there was a small crack in it," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "Based on new radiographs that were taken, the leg looked excellent under the cast. The pastern joint looks completely fused, and there is only a small area in the long pastern bone that has a little farther to go before we take him out of the cast completely."

In addition, the radiographs showed that there were no signs of infection. The cast change took place under general anesthesia, and Barbaro had another successful pool recovery before returning to his stall.

The colt's left hind foot has laminitis, but Barbaro seems comfortable with that foot as well. The bandage on the left hind foot continues to be changed daily.

According to Dr. Richardson: "Barbaro is bright and happy this morning with an excellent appetite."

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, September 5 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 549: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (sunday night). Just spoke to Michael Matz behind the gate. He said that everything looked good after the cast change yesterday. He expressed that everyone seemed happy with Bobby's progress.
updated monday 8:15am

Update 548: The New York Times has the following article: Bernardini and Barbaro: A Rivalry That Wasn't that does a nice job of highlighting both horses' accomplishments without make sweeping statements on who is the better. I also like the note of comparison with Cigar from Tom Albertani. He should know as he is closely connected to both horses. I think that comparison just illustrates that this year we have been blessed with superb 3yos.

A quick recap from the races yesterday. We know Round Pond was a very close second, here is another report: Promenade Girl wins Molly Pitcher. Stormy Kiss (Jackson owned, Tagg trained) was third in the Ballerina: Dubai Escapade takes Ballerina and George Washington (Jackson bred) was third O'BRIEN UPBEAT DESPITE GEORGE DEFEAT after a slow start.

Next weekend we will focus on the Woodward at Saratoga. Funny Cide is scheduled to run, he breezed 5/8ths in 1:00 in preparation for the race last thursday: Funny Cide Preps for Woodward With Bullet Work, an excerpt:

"I thought the track was slow, but safe," Tagg said. "He really worked well over it. I thought it was a serious workout for him. But we wanted to be safe with him because he's going to run for big money next Saturday."

I am not sure when this morning's Barbaro update will occur. If Dr. Richardson is indeed on vacation it may be a little later, but he may well still be providing Michael his morning update, I just don't know.

Comments

Good Morning Alex and team Barbaro,

Understanding that the update will probably be later, I'll not worry but will check back periodically during the morning.

########
To Everyone - please keep all of us Floridian members of team Barbaro in your prayers. It looks like all of us (no matter where in the state we are) are going to get hit by Ernesto. Along with that, please also pray that the horses are kept safely too. I always worry about them. I know that many horse owners have too many horses to evacuate.

Here's a lovely article about George Washington...

http://sport.independent.co.uk/general/article1222264.ece

"So far, so good, but perhaps too good. For as the stalls opened, George Washington, the 5-6 favourite, forgot that he was a racehorse and stood still, Hamlet-style."

You had to see it...it was a gem of a moment!
And it's nice to see that Aidan O'Brien couldn't be happier with him :-)

Good Morning all ye' Bobby Heads!!!

Dee, I am so happy to hear about Chief! What wonderful news. The power of prayer is a beautiful thing.
Best of luck to Chief for a complete recovery!

Barbaro, have a great day...hope you don't miss the good doc too much. I wonder who will get to graze you today??? Maybe Pamela, or Sally? You are a lucky boy!

Too sad about BGC. Hope he wasn't/isn't in too much pain. Should he have run in the Travers?
I wonder.

Have a wonderful day everyone, and as always, thank you Alex for a wonderful place to come and learn and to be with friends.

Good Morning Barbaromaniacs!!

Bernardini will probably win the Eclispe award for hte best 3 year old this year, and that is fine he is a beartiful gear horse (that would have been beaten by Barbaro in my opinion).

However, Barbaro's place in history is very secure. Did you know that he is one of only six horses that went into the Kentucky Derby undeated and came out undefeated? That is totaly amazing!! BTW the other five are Smarty Jones, Seattle Slew, Majestic Prince, Morvich, and Regret. I also sent back and reread some of the the coverage of the Kentucky Derby. I didn't realized that Barbaro stumbled almost to his knees coming out of the gate and still won by the biggest margin in decades in a field of 20 horses that was the best group of 3year olds in years. Yes, Barbaro will never be forgotten for what he did on the race track.

He may not get the Eclispe award this year, but here are some awards would get:

Horse who gives the best hugs
Horse with most websites dedicated to him
Most beloved
Most famous worldwide
Most courageous
Most inspiring
Most influential
Horse with most videos made of him (on & off the track)

I have left off the human connections on purpose because I'm very respectful of all hourse owners, trainers, exercise riders, jockeys, and grooms.

Please have fun adding to this list.

Barbaro - have a great great healing day. Try not to miss Dr R too much! Love and hugs

Sally, Barbara, Janice, and all Floridians:

I used to live in Georgia and would see all the evacations during hurricanes, what a pain. If you need to evacute there is a Community College in Tifton, GA, about 60 miles north of the Florida border Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, ABAC." I believe it is exit 64, if not, you can ask how to get there. Tell them you were told to evacute and they will assist you.

If you have pets, you can e-mail me and I will try to get some of my friends to assist you with them.

I will continue to check my e-mail, just in the need arises.

PS: I forgot to mention they (ABAC) have horses and could probably help out.

Posted by: Socorro at August 28, 2006 11:58 AM

Jo, I agree with you. Totally understand that Dr. R may not be calling in, but I need to know the big guy is ok.

Posted by: mary at August 28, 2006 11:59 AM

Great to see all the positive updates! Came in from the Travers this a.m. and at work by 7 (whew). What a great weekend, with great horses in a beautiful location - one thing missing - BARBARO. However, Barbaro was alive and well and talked about consistently all weekend by MANY folks at the Travers....Bluegrass Cat was obviously not well at the race. He looked terrible going into the gate, tired and aggitated. Again, Bernadini had not much to run against (don't get me going on this topic) and with BGC suffering a fractured pastern, it was amazing to watch the 2nd place finish - that horse has the heart of champion....Met many great folks this weekend - horse racing is definitely an incredible sport and avenue for some fine folks. Can't wait until my horses race starting next month!

Prayers to Barbaro and all other horses and folks who need them today....

Gee, I am really hoping that maybe Dr R was able to simply put a smaller cast or a leg brace type of support on you now. I bet you would really like to have that itchy thing off after 3 months. You be careful Mister. Your mom and your Pals Michael and Peter will be with you this week. You play nice with all of your nurses and keep eating and practice walking around slowly.

Anxiously awaiting official news on your recent cast and pictures of your bones.

ANC!

Sally, whether it's wise to stay or not totally depends on the storm, how big, exactly where and how hard it hits...and those are factors that aren't always known before it's too late to evacuate.

Be careful, kiddo. Evacuating stinks, but it's better than some of the alternatives.

BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!!

Our very own Alex was FRONT PAGE NEWS in my local paper (The Cecil Whig) today. He was there in living color in front of his laptop, and on page A-2 he was on a horse.

The article was about how this site has grown since before Bobby's terrible accident. Alex said back in the day this site got a whopping 6 hits per day. Today Alex said we get about 12,000. He said that we actually crashed the site early on as the server could not handle the traffic.

AND OUR VERY OWN SUSANW was in the article. Alex quoted her and also quoted one of our poets. I am going to mail Susan (Anela to me) a copy of the paper today.

Cheers Alex!

Sally,

You probably have a good feel for these hurricanes.

My son, lived in Orlando when Charley hit, it looked like a bomb hit his apartment complex. He was not given permission to leave school, but when the next one came, they were all out!

Take care and don't wait to long, gas was a huge problem.

I came across the following article (please pass by if already read) that was posted in the SI.com on 8/24/06.

What could've been . . .
As Barbaro fights for life, Matz reflects on fateful day

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/tim_layden/08/24/barbaro.update/

On Tuesday evening, trainer Michael Matz sat down at his home in rural Pennsylvania and watched the Preakness. It had been a while since he'd seen a rerun of the May 20 race in which his Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro, was pulled up by jockey Edgar Prado 15 seconds into the race with multiple fractures in his lower right hind leg.

That was a long, sad day, beginning in cool sunlight at Pimlico and ending in darkness at an animal hospital in Pennsylvania, where began the battle to save Barbaro's life. It was a day that took its place in racing lore, alongside those days when Ruffian and Go For Wand went down and sent the entire racing community into a funk that hasn't fully lifted.

What's more, Matz's wife, D.D., couldn't stomach watching replays of the Preakness, in which Barbaro is seen clearly distressed and confused, the lower part of his injured leg flopping inertly. "She doesn't want to see it ever again,'' said Matz. But D.D. was away for a week with the family's four kids, leaving Michael alone. So he watched.

"I wanted to see if something happened, if anything happened,'' Matz said. "I couldn't see anything. I think he just took a bad step. That's what I thought then, and that's what it still looked like.''

There was a pause on the other end of the phone line. I could picture Matz holding the cell phone to his jawbone. Matz shouted something at his barn workers about raking the barn area properly, the kind of thing you hear a trainer shout a dozen times a day.

I thought about Preakness Day, when I saw Matz a couple of hours before the race. He talked about having sent Barbaro out for a pre-dawn gallop. "He needed that gallop,'' Matz said, brimming with confidence.

Now he started talking again. "The morning of that race,'' Matz said. "I thought they might as well have handed me the trophy right there. He was a such a great horse and he was so ready to run.''

Another pause.

"Maybe I had him too ready that day,'' says Matz. "I don't think I made a mistake; I think I had him in good condition. But when something like this happens, you second-guess yourself. It's only human.''

It was a theory that railbirds who couldn't help themselves floated in the aftermath of Barbaro's injury. The strapping colt had raced lightly. The Preakness was only his fourth start in 139 days. Maybe he wasn't seasoned enough. This was the same rationale that handicappers applied before the Derby, which Barbaro won by a comical six lengths. It's all nonsense. Nobody knows why Barbaro's leg snapped in the Pimlico loam. It just did. Horses are big animals with small limbs. Still, Matz beats himself up because he is only human.

He visits Barbaro every day at the New Bolton Center and changes the bandages on the colt's left hind leg, the one afflicted with laminitis, a disease that arose in July and poses the greatest threat to Barbaro's survival. Barbaro recently got outside his stall to graze, his first time in the sunlight since the Preakness. It was a major step in the horse's recovery, but doesn't alleviate the one element that most cuts at Matz.

"Every time I walk into his stall,'' says Matz, "he looks at me like he wants to do something.'' Much like he stood on the Pimlico track, confused that his jockey had stopped him, shocked that his body had betrayed him. Now Barbaro wants to run again. Which he will never do.

This weekend the racing world turns its attention to Saratoga, where Preakness winner Bernardini will try to assume leadership of the 3-year-old division with a victory in the Travers. After Barbaro's Kentucky Derby win, many handicappers and veteran horsemen predicted that his combination of cruising speed and stamina would carry him to the Triple Crown. Perhaps easily.

But consensus shifts quickly in the horse business. Even as Barbaro fought for his life after the Preakness, some handicappers suggested that he would not have beaten Bernardini in the Preakness. We'll never know. The underlying tragedy of Barbaro's injury is the loss of competition, which is the essence of racing and, indeed, of sport. Imagine if Bernardini had beaten a healthy Barbaro in the Preakness and then Barbaro had come back to win the Belmont Stakes. What a race the Travers would be.

Matz is a competitor, a three-time Olympic equestrian. "It hurts to be standing on the sideline,'' he says. "I wish I could send Barbaro out there to run. I can't, and I have to accept that we were lucky to have him as long as we did.''

Matz has other horses in the barn, including unraced 2-year-old colts by Came Home, Cherokee Run and Seeking The Gold. "Nice colts, but if you're asking me about my Triple Crown chances, compared to him,'' Matz said, letting out a loud laugh, "well, it looks like I'm in trouble.''

He will run a horse on Saturday at Saratoga, amidst the ancient elm trees and all the history that a track can muster. Then he will watch the Travers, because he always enjoys watching good racehorses in a big race. Although on this day, probably not as much as usual.

Hi, gang,

Thanks to Alex, et al for this site. It's great to get breaking news faster than other news outlets are able to broadcast it. On the topic of journalism--two things:

I would guess that there was no one in the publications/public relations office at NBC yesterday to do a press release. This would indicate that everyone felt the cast change was going to be uneventful. I'm looking for a release at the NBC page later today.

The Cecil Whig is trying to give its "dead tree edition" a circulation boost by not putting the story about Alex on their website until tomorrow. Probably they do this with all their news /features etc. I just wonder how many extra hits they will get for this story today and tomorrow ;) Think we'll crash their server?

Have a great day, Barbaro. Floridians, take care.

Alex, really like the way you are posting articles of other interest like Bernardini, Funny Cide, Round Pond and updates on LITF, just to name a few.

You are able to obtain details and information directly from the 'horse's mouth' so-to-speak and put a 'real' spin on the world of horse racing. So much of what I read is from outsiders looking in and is far too critical of one horse or the other.

So keep up the good work. So glad Bobby has made it through another cast change and that Dr. Dean feels comfortable enough with his condition that he can take a few days of R & R. He certainly deserves it.

If anyone deserves a little downtime, it's you. So take time for yourself. We'll all be here no matter what!

Keeping my fingers crossed that the sonograms show that LITF is beating the odds.

Have a great week all!

Grateful, relieved and KVELLING MIT NACHAS for another comfortable night on the way to that clear path out of the woods. As I've said before and will undoubtedly say again, for me, the Continuing Miracle Whose Name Is Barbaro is buffer enough re all the other stuff. LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH.

########### I apologize in advance to those who would prefer I post non-Barbaro material such as what follows, elsewhere; I am unable to negotiate to either the forum or the chat that Alex has so kindly set up, so I am "stuck" here and have something I want to share with this particular venue.

Before I wound up on this site in the wake of P day, the only inkling I (and maybe others reading this) had about other people feeling as I do about animals, came from interacting with vets, and the horsepeople I know from the barn, and last but far from least - from watching Animal Planet (standard cable, I believe, and channel 282 on direcTV). As further buffer against all the troubling stuff, I still find solace in the success stories on such shows as Emergency Vets and the multitude of "Animal Rescue" rype regular shows - most notably because of the portrayal of real people who daily make a difference in the lives of animals. Other people to whom it is NOT "just" a cat, dog, horse, iguana or rat. I am not alone.

Last night there were two back-to-back hours on Animal Planet that kept me from watching "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy". First, "Jane Goodall's Heroes" with her hosting, highlighting and honoring [and rewarding, with $ grants from Animal Planet] five animal rescuers/activists around the world who are striving to study and save and educate us about and preserve habitat for diverse kinds of dwindling if not endangered species. The portrayal of these people, and hearing her talk about how they share her passion, is really worth watching. That was followed by an hour of Katrina Reunions (from point of view of animal rescue heroes involved in reuniting animals with their people). Depicted a few of the many local organizations that stepped up to care for the countless critters in need. And those reunions! The best. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. ANYWAY, I'm sure these shows will be re-running on AP and I urge everyone reading this, to try to watch both of these programs (and recommend them to your friends as well).

Hoping for the "save" in the case of LITF; that his comfort-level/appetite/disposition continue to be conducive to healing; that the time is right for the right meds to be available to SHRINK those tumors.

My heart goes out to Monica who had to make the decision to let Sluggo leave "this mortal coil" and to all the humans who have had to do this as the last living act of love for a furry family member. Not a one can ever be replaced, and I couldn't conceive of life without a horse or without a houseful of cats.

I must admit I cracked myself up when preparing this Comment for posting, because at first I typo'ed "Desperate Horsewives" - which so many of us are, aren't we!?!?!?

Here is Alex in front of his computer

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri at August 28, 2006 2:24 PM

Hey, just went online (this is probably old news by now..)
and found the article on Alex Brown and Tim Woolley Site

http://cecilwhig.com/articles/2006/08/28/news/01.txt

Online outpouring of support for Barbaro
* Thousands check horse’s status every day on trainer’s Web site

also

‘He’s holding his own’
* Barbaro walking on all four legs 100 days later; trainers try to move on

Every day, about 12,000 people from around the world look to Alex Brown to answer one burning question: How’s Barbaro?

Ever since the Kentucky Derby-winning Fair Hill horse broke his leg in a tragic Preakness misstep, the Web site Brown maintains has become a premiere source for fans who need a daily dose of information.

Before May, Brown lived a quiet life exercising horses for four Fair Hill trainers including Tim Woolley, who has kept a stable at the training center for 11 years. As a side project, Brown also maintained the Web site www.timwoolleyracing.com, which then mostly listed racing stats on Woolley’s horses. Back then, about six people logged on the site per day, Brown said.

But that was before the gentle bay colt called Barbaro burst onto the national horseracing scene. Barbaro, who lived and trained next door to Woolley’s barn, astounded everyone when he won the Kentucky Derby by more than six lengths May 6. Two days later, Barbaro came back to Fair Hill a sudden star and started training for the May 20 Preakness.

Brown had an idea.

“I told (Woolley), ‘Let’s start putting up daily Barbaro updates, to try to build traffic to our Web site,’” Brown said.

Each day, he’d watch Barbaro scamper around the training track and he’d talk to the horse’s trainer, Michael Matz. Then he’d write an update and post it on Woolley’s site. The number of daily visitors to the site climbed to about 120 that week, Brown said.

Then came Preakness weekend. Barbaro burst through the starting gate early. He shattered his leg minutes later and paramedics rushed him to the New Bolton Center for Large Animals in Kennett Square, Pa. with the outlook grim.

“After the disaster at Preakness, everyone in Fair Hill was devastated,” Brown said. “It was just such a shock. We weren’t going to cover Barbaro anymore.”

But then, he figured, what the hey. He called the New Bolton Center that night to check Barbaro’s condition.

On his site, he posted what he’d learned: “Barbaro is now in the recovery pool (7:40 p.m.). He has a bone plate fusing his ankle and pastern and a cast has been placed over this,” it said. “Dr. Richardson described the surgery as one of the toughest he has performed ….”

Brown said his site was the first source to release the information that Barbaro had come out of surgery.

“We had over 3,000 hits in an hour, which crashed the site,” he said.

In the following few days, he continued to call Barbaro’s vet, talk to Michael Matz, and post updates.

Thousands of people started logging on to read them and to post get-well messages to Barbaro.

“We’re tracking about 12,000 visits to our site a day,” Brown said.

Before Barbaro, a daily site update took Brown 20 minutes.

“Now I probably spend four to five hours on it a day,” he said. “It’s a huge undertaking.”

He had to increase the site’s bandwidth to hold the deluge of traffic. And a newly installed discussion board shows just how much time fans are willing to devote to their beloved horse. Some visitors post more than 10 messages per day with kind words like, “BELIEVE IN MIRACLES - BELIEVE IN BARBARO n Susan.”

In the poem “Barbaro’s Goodnight Whisperer,” site visitor Cle Shaw writes:

“From Dawn’s earliest sunbeams grazing your face/You knew at once NBC was your new place/Handling all kinds of setbacks you willed your way through/Winning America’s hearts and your Dr. Dean’s too ….”

Through his daily postings, Brown has even garnered some fans of his own. After someone posted a picture of Brown riding a horse, a smattering of women posted notes deeming him a “hottie.”

Brown, 42, says he’s trying to not only keep people abreast of Barbaro news, but also to familiarize them with the horseracing industry.

“A lot of the people who visit our site, they’re not really horseracing people,” he said. “Now they’ve got an interest in the industry because they’re Barbaro fans, so we’re trying to educate them. We’re trying to cover horseracing at a high level.”

He plans to keep the updates coming at least until Barbaro gets firmly back on his feet.

“It’s been an interesting project, and we’ve got at least another four or five months left of it,” he said. “We’ll keep it up until Barbaro leaves the New Bolton Center, which is what everyone is rooting for,” he said.

So, by the way, how’s Barbaro?

“He’s great!” Brown said. “He’s out grazing and everything. There still could be a lot of complications, but today, he’s going really great. The best we could hope for

Here is an update on Lost In The Fog that was posted by Vic Stoffer, a racecaller here in California and Florida, to the Del Mar Fan Forum last night. He visted with Greg Gilchrist at Foggy's stable. Note the reference to a delivery of a basket of goodies and Mr. Gilchrist's gracious acceptance. Very nice story.

Posted: Sun Aug 27, 2006 11:40 pm Post subject:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went and saw Lost In The Fog today. He looked in great spirits and oblivious to the challenge ahead. I was thinking that's one great thing the horses have on us.

I told Greg Gilchrist how much I admired his dedication to his horse. But moreso how great he's been with the media and fans thoughout this champions career.

He and Mr Aleo clearly got it. And understood how much fun was to be had and how to rejoice in a once in a lifetime horse.

I believe they should hold their heads high.

As I was standing talking to Gilly a woman and her teen daughter walked up with a basket of apples and carrots, a card and a sketch that the girl had drawn of LITF.

Greg was so classy in how he greeted them. Took time to answer all their questions and just as they were about to leave ask them if they'd like to meet the horse. You should have seen the look on their faces as they walked under the shedrow.

I'm a pretty hardened racetracker and I thought I was gonna start blubbering and got the heck out of dodge.

Just another example that our sport is the best of them all. And our horses and horsemen are to be treasured.

How about a photo in a year of Barbaro and Lost in The Fog both standing in KY.

Longshot? Of course but they hit everyday.

I was blessed to have called them both to stakes wins at Gulfstream.

Tonight I say an extra prayer for them both.

Patty, I will add to your list for Barbaro what Man o'War's groom, Will Harbut, said about "Big Red", "He's just the mostest horse". I believe that Barbaro is that too!!

They say that Mr. Harbut really loved Man o'War, and people came to visit him all the time. Not only for Man O' War greatness (he won 20 of his 21 races), but also to listen to Mr. Barbut talk about him. From what I have read about him, Mr. Harbut had a wonderful voice.

Oops i goofed! Just wanted to give everybody an update about Lawyer Ron. Looks like he came back from his injury in the K.D. Ok. Saw him Sat. night and he looked fabulous, so did Lewis Michael but it looked like he might of needed that race. I thought he would win much easier. Dallas Stewarts horse finished 2nd at 30-1 and made it close. Dallas was actually there with his horse and he was next to us in the grandstand. he was very pleased with the result. I was amazed that he actually showed up there. The attendance was about 8000. Let me tell you- it was packed to capacity. So this was a big event for this track, but everyone came out to see this very good 3 y o So when prominent people and horses show up, it is a great occasion. Thanks dallas for coming around the little people. and thanks to Bob Holthus for bringing Lawyer Ron to us. It was a great night. People cheered like it was the Kentucky Derby. Jen

Posted by: Trish at August 28, 2006 3:17 PM

I was going back through old updates just to see the progress Barbaro's made over the last 3 months. I came upon an excerpt of a post made by Kim Brette, Peter's wife. This is in update 26 so it's quite old, but it makes refrence to Eduardo(Bobby's groom) getting to see him at NBC. Thought I'd post the except:

After meeting with Dr Richardson, he took us to see the champ, he looked great, happy, in no pain at all, I asked him how many mints he was allowed he said as many as he would like, we didn't go overboard, no sugar overload...he is a three year old and those of us with the human version know what too much sugar does.

One of the most touching things was how Eduardo and him were, Eduardo quietly walked in and looked every part of his body over, started picking the straw out of his tail, brushing his mane and stroking him, he truly cares about him and I think he loves going there to make sure his boy is okay.

I know we were all wondering about his groom. Glad he got to visit Barbaro.

Barbaro has cast change

August 28, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA —Veterinarians at Penn’s George D. Widener Hospital changed the right hind leg cast of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro yesterday, Sunday, August 27. “The cast was changed because there was a small crack in it,” said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. “Based on new radiographs that were taken, the leg looked excellent under the cast. The pastern joint looks completely fused, and there is only a small area in the long pastern bone that has a little farther to go before we take him out of the cast completely.”

In addition, the radiographs showed that there were no signs of infection. The cast change took place under general anesthesia, and Barbaro had another successful pool recovery before returning to his stall.

The colt’s left hind foot has laminitis, but Barbaro seems comfortable with that foot as well. The bandage on the left hind foot continues to be changed daily.

According to Dr. Richardson: “Barbaro is bright and happy this morning with an excellent appetite.”

MIKE MATZ...SARATOGA'S 8TH TODAY..

Posted by: mike c at August 28, 2006 3:20 PM

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania’s George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, September 5 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

Dear friends thank you all for the support you have shown and given us regarding out situation with Antonio (the blk Persian in SF).
We took him to the Vet Sunday and talked over every option that was available to us but in the end putting him down was the kindest and most humane think we could for the cat. We had to put his well being and comfort before our emotional needs. He passed in peace after having had a weekend with all the people that loved him.
It is a sad day for us but we pull through knowing that he is no longer in discomfort and that his last days were painfree and happy ones.
So, thanks again to all and continued healing for Barbaro and Foggy and the others that we have missed in our three day absence.

#########

Alex just posted the following on the forum. A few bad apples spoiled if for us. Jazz

Quote:
I just want to post that perhaps I was taking on too much when deciding to open up a forum, chat room and leave comments open for TWR etc. I thought it would be a good idea to allow discussion, and thought it would also be great for people wanting to learn more about racing and horses in general. Well I have come to realise that I was a bit of an idealist and perhaps I have taken on a little too much. While I am not yet going to shut everything down (other than my updates), it is something I will contemplate doing over the next couple of days. I am mostly exhausted with disputes amongst us, and i have been personally attacked on more than one occasion by more than one person. i am not going to reveal who these people are, and I am certain that they are truly good people, we just have different viewpoints, and different means of expressing those viewpoints. The real frustration is I know this is a very small minority, and again, I think that likely just good people anyway.

I had hoped we would all get along simply because we all had one main focus in mind, its all about Barbaro.

Anyway, just posting, please don't respond to this post nor e-mail me about it, as I do know it would be a shame to remove the discussion boards etc.

cheers, alex

Gooood morning Barbaro family!

ACN!! ohh my! that makes my heart sing!

Thanx for all the news Alex, I'm learning so much just by coming here every day...can't wait to see that article about you! A "hottie" huh?

To all our Florida friends, stay safe, evaluate whether to evacuate or not. I was brushed by Hurricane Andrew and fortunately escaped any real damage on it's way to punishing Miami. And I too worry about pets. I've talked to people who left their pets in the home while they evacuated. SOOOOO WRONG!! When Hurricane Rita threatened us, I stayed put with my two cats. If they couldn't travel, then I couldn't.

Okay babycakes, enough soapbox! I hope you have a grand day, even tho Dr R isn't there. I'm sure your Mom or Michael or Peter will be showing up to shower you with attention.

Now twitch your ears, flick that cute lil tail..Here goes!

Eat your carrots every day
No more sling, so play in the hay

Sunshine, breezes, grass everywhere
There is nothing to compare

Grow hoof grow! Heal leg heal!
That's become our daily appeal

Keep on doing like you are
You're our bright and shining star!

Hugs and smoochies, babycakes!

Off to light candles for everyone.

Can someone explain why a horse would be referred to as 'it'?

Lawyer Ron's owner,(Mrs.), was in an interview and she stated, "We put 'it' on the dirt, then we put 'it' on the turf........". I would refer to 'it' as Ron, myself. But I guess there is something I don't know. Maybe she just needs to remain detached, so to speak.

Thank God for a positive weekend and a smooth cast change. Hopefully (and prayerfully of course), Doc won't have to change it for awhile.

Good article about Alex. And thanks Alex for your continued hard work.

Writers seem to be now theorizing the could-have beens:re: Barbaro vs. Bernardini. We were blessed this year with having two outstanding 3y/olds. They just didn't race contemporaneously, with the exception of the Preakness in which the head-to-head of course never materialized. So, everyone is forced to hypothesize and theorize and what the rivalry would have looked like.

More than likely (to my chagrine) Berbardini will be named 3 y/o champion, unless he is upset in the Jockey Club. If he is beaten, then things will be confusing for the voters, as the Barbaro effect remains strong. What I am waiting for in Bernardini is for him to run in a crowd (i.e. field more thank 12 horses) and get bumped around and jostled. Then let's see how he runs. I am not convinced that he can handle that. I think he is pampered and is used to running out by himself. We might have to wait for the Breeder's Cup Classic to see a large enough field to put these doubts of mine to rest. I am also looking forward to him having to stare a competitor down in the stretch for home, in a test of wills. He won't most likely have to face this in the Jockey, but will in the Classic.

It deserves mentioning that Bobby passed both of the above tests. The K. Derby is the Derby (i.e. a stampede), where bumping and get cut off are the norm. He has also shown his will to win, being tested twice in the lane only to push his challengers aside.

Berbardini (NOT bashing) still to me has much to prove. He beat a weak field in the JIm Dandy and another in the Travers. Before anyone casts their vote, I think patience is in order. Just my view from this side of the fence.

Posted by: Greg at August 28, 2006 3:34 PM

After visiting the candle site, it seems the numbers have picked up in the barba and foggy group...that's good. I also lit a candle for all the guys down in hurricane lane..Janice et.all and labeled it ...."FL." hope that is non-conflicting with another FL candle group designation already in existence.

Barbaro my hero.......love you!!! Glad to see that your leg looks good after the cast change......keep healing love of my life!!

Alex...I know you don't want replies to your statement but I have to reply.

Alex has been our lifeline with all that is going on with Barbaro and the horseracing industry.

Please, whoever is bashing Alex, stop! He has nothing but a kind heart and has taken his own life and put it on hold for US!

He has provided us with a means to communicate and learn so much more through these communications. Like right now, the hurricane in Florida and the horses/animals there in danger. It will be a sad day when we cannot come onto Tim Wooley's Racing to hear about the world.

Alex...is there any way we can all provide you with a site just for what you have been doing?
Maybe each of us pay to be a member and that would entitle each of us to communicate with Bobby and the world...please!

Jazz:

Thank you for posting Alex's statement. I am so very, very sad. Alex has been really wonderful with all of the updates, stories and pictures. It would be such a shame for it to all go away.

I am learning so much about horseracing. I have always loved it, but only the Triple Crown, really.

We can all disagree, but we should do it in a good spirited way. Alex has done so much for all of us. Just think, perhaps without this website, the NBC would not have had all those wonderful contributions.

Just think, perhaps without this website we wouldn't have all the Barbaro Effect...

Please be nice to Alex.

Thank you for posting Alex's comments on the forum. I am so sad about this. Alex should not have to babysit any of us. He spends 4-5 extra hours working on this site for the benefit of all of us. I am not a horse owner and have never worked with horses but fell in love with Barbaro. I have learned so much about a wide variety of horse issues from those of you who have had the experience of being around these wonderful animals and I will certainly miss that if Alex takes down the ability to post.

I don't make anyone mad I just feel that we should have used this site and the forum to discuss Barbaro and other horse related issues. The personal discussions should be handled thru personal emails between those folks who want to carry on those kinds of discussions. This site is viewed by many in the sports world and I don't blame Alex for what he may decide to do. However, as I just said above, it will make me very sad.
Thanks for listening, I do not mean to offend anyone.

In light of Bernardinis success, and Barbaros' extreme situation, why can't there be co -champions of the 3 yr old division..

And if Bernardini goes on to beat olders, he may indeed win the horse of the year award and leave 3yr old honors to Barbaro. Horses seldom win both 3rd old and horse of the year, why I don't know, the Eclipe voters like giving only 1 to a horse..

I am sooo sorry to hear about Twister. I'm sure he was a big part of your workday. Office cats offer so much.

We have an office cat here at work. He's a huge black cat and his name is Bart! I love him dearly. Great stress reliever. (He goes for rides on the forklifts!) He's getting to be quite old, 13 or so, I'm told. I dread the day....

This is my 3rd posting. Alex, thank you so much for this site. So much good has come from it. For example, the wonderful birthday party for Dr. R would not have happened--with the donations to the Barbaro Fund. The organized vigils would not have occurred. You, personally have been the catalyst for more good than perhaps any of us will ever know, for I believe this community of caring has helped in some small way towards Barbaro's recovery. And this would not have happened if you had not had this site. But if the site is taking so much of your time, perhaps you need a break from it for a week or so. If we could just have the news for awhile that would be great. You must take care of yourself and return to this site renewed, for we are all in this for the long haul for Barbaro. Thanks again, Alex.

Good Morning Mr. B,

Another successful cast change (hooray!) Another Comfortable Night (hip hip horay!) You are a marvel.

Joe Drape (NYT) has written some nice opinion pieces about Barbaro. This one (B&B) is no different. It's feels so good to read honest and thoughtful words, not just the ones made to sell newspapers. Thanks Alex for connecting us to it.

The post re the caller who visited LITF was very moving. When an experienced caller is reduced to an emotional reaction - it's big.

Barbaro and Lost in the Fog standing in a field together. It's the picture that will be seen around the world (apologies to baseball). So if the shot heard around the world happened, so can this picture.

Barbaro and LITF have a great day! Check in later.

Love ya,
Thanks.

OK.

Up at Saratoga amongst trainers and horsemen ,alot feel that PIMLICO was neglegant in letting Barbaro run in the Preakness. They will not openly speak against the track, but there is alot of bitterness around against Pimlico. Not giving a horse of Barbaros quality more time before loading after the break thru the gate. They feel that Pimlico did not want to refund the millions bet on Barbaro to the public.

If Pimlico scratched him AND extended post time they could have gotten their bet money back intot he pools, they didnt want to chance it.

I heard this from alot more than one person up there..

ALOT ---ALOT of Barbaro hats and shirts were to be seen at Saratoga over the past week. Many spectators were wearing them. AND even with the performance of Bernardini, people still feel he would have got beat by Barbaro.

Saratoga people know horses, they saw Bluegrass Cat was washed out before the race, NOBODY headed him in the race, HIGH COTTON, Pletchers "speed horse" actually hurt Bluegrass Cats chances by not getting the lead and forcing the cat 3 wide around the track.

No sour grapes here on my part, Bernardini was best on the day, But beating that field and a BGC at maybe 65% still doesnt show me he's is(was) better than Barbaro.

On Barbaros campaign he beat ALL COMERS, not a field of 5 in the slop or 6 in a 2 horse race where the only competition he had was running as it turned out on only 3 legs.

The best horse I saw at SARATOGA this week was DISCREET CAT, I think he'd have won the Travers in a walk. VERY IMPERSSIVE ANIMAL..

Interesting to see if Godolphin runs him in the Gold Cup OR Classic..

To me he is the competition Barbaro would have had to beat if he was still sound.

If anyone has any questions or anything to ask , feel free, I will get back to them..

BUT BARBARO IS ALIVE AND WELL IN MANY PEOPLES MINDS AND HEARTS IN THE RACING COMMUNITY.

Gosh darn it......just read Alex's comments. Why, in the name of Heaven, would anyone attack Alex?

I guess, there's always a FEW people who - apparently lacking control over their own obviously pitiful lives - have to go and try to pull everyone else down in the misery gutter with them.

This just makes me so mad.

That is such incredible news, brings tears to my eyes. Praying it continues through that "clearer path through the woods"!

A L E X --

Thank you for all the hard work you do. And thank you for this site and enabling all of us to post positive feedback.

WONDERFUL posting updates regarding BIG BARBARO's cast change and bone fusing!! Prayers are answered. Thank you to Dr. R and staff @ NBC for all their care of this magnificent horse.

PRAY FOR BARBARO AND ALL THOSE WHO LOVE AND CARE FOR HIM.

I was never interested in horse racing before. I thought it was a way that people got rich off of horses and discarded them after their use.

After being EDUCATED by this website I have a different perspective. I am sad that people do not have enough respect for ALEX and all that he has done, not only for BARBARO but for the whole racing industry.

It would be very sad to see our "link" into this world come to an end.

Barbaro,

You wonderful, wonderful man you!!!! So glad you got the cast change over with and the recovery pool is behind you too. So ecstatic that Dr. Ricardson said all but the long pastern has fused. Good work guy! Please keep on doing what you've been doing and keep growing that LH hoof fella. We all love you and are praying for you around the clock so you just relax today, eat lots of baby carrots, graze in the grass and get a horse massage before bedtime tonight. Remember, all of God's angels are watching over you while you sleep!! Bye for now.

Alex...how nice of Dave to call and give you an update on Bernardini. I was laughing as I was reading it because you HAD mentioned about that swish of his tail when he tapped with the whip! LOL

He sounds like a real character ` :-)

I'll look forward to the next update!!

Hi Alex - I am behind you in your decision if you decide the close the forum here. Your posts have been most informative and is enough information for me to keep abreast of the daily progress for Barbaro. The discussion board was to be there for the daily forums, but it appears you have 2 sites to monitor, and that is more than what you need to manage. Do what you have to do - your work is greatly appreciated either way.

I am happy to hear that Bernardini is doing so well after the Travers...wish it was the same for BGC. I hope he is feeling ok and getting the care and attention he so deserves...I'm sure he is. I just wonder why they even ran him, if there were any doubt about his soundness. I hope that isn't the case.

Barbaro, you champ, sounds like you are flying high. You continue to be such a good boy. Everyone is so please with your progress...keep on keepin on Bobby. You are the greatest champion ever!!

Does anyone know where to view the replay of the Travers...I would love to see it again.

Have a great day all.

Alex,

In reply to Jazz's posting:

You have no idea how much of a difference your website has made. I have never posted or participated in any discussions via internet.

We all appreciate what you are doing and cannot comprehend the work you are putting into this website. Many of us have are being educational and informed on horses, plus other things.

Sometimes when we are traveling I get upset, but realize that there are good and bad in every group.

This has become my connection to the US. I wish there is something I could help with or say to encourage you that there are more nicer people than, well you know, not worth wasting our time.

If I find something I don't like, I just move on, not worth giving them my time.

Again, thank you for what you have done for many of us, plus our friends (horses).

Oh Barbaro, what a wonderful day this is.

Finally, reports coming from NBC with words like "looks excellent" " fusion fully taken" "radiographs show no infection" " a little more time before CAST COMES OFF ALTOGETHER"

Keep that excellent appetite and keep healing!

Thank you Alex for the wonderful news!
