Barbaro Updates: 59

updates are now here.

Update 560: Just spoke to Kathy Anderson who visited Barbaro this afternoon. She reported Barbaro looked comfortable. Michael had also just left as Kathy was arriving.

For those of you interested in the anti slaughter campaign, a group is forming and becoming quite active, you can learn more on discussion boards: HR 503 Phone Campaign. They are seeking support for a phone campaign. The vote is coming very soon (september 7).

Update 559: Alie, from Kennett Florist just left this comment (timestamp 8:41pm):

HELLO ALL
I returned from NBC about hour & half ago. I've been tiring to post ever since. Everyone I was in contact with, seemed up.
Very much excited about the NBC (UPENN) BARBARO FUND. Since Friday another $4196.00 has been donated in honor of Dr Richardson's birthday. That's big news.
I can't wait to hear what tomorrow is, since it's really Dr R's birthday. It was very busy they had a lot of appointments coming in. I was told thing are good. Nothing gave me any impression of a problem. We delivered big cookies for very one at the main center. And of course carrots & horse treats for Bobby.
Next week NBC is having a big meeting with all staff not just the main building. They have never had anything serviced at this meeting. We are (KF) going to do coffee, tea, cream, sugar, cups. This will be for all 300 people. It's going to be an early morning for us.
We have a lunch in the works for next week. Not much else, for next week. This week is cover, except basket for sat. If no one calls for it, we will use fund money.
Alie

Amazing generosity!

Update 558: Just spoke to Barclay (Tagg) to catch up with Funny Cide and Showing Up.

Funny Cide is targeted to run in the Woodward this weekend at Saratoga. He galloped a mile and a half today, which is his usual gallop in between breezes when he is training. Barclay said he likes to breeze him every six days, and he is scheduled for his final breeze tomorrow. Unfortunately the weather may not fully cooperate so the breeze is still up in the air, and if he does not breeze tomorrow he may breeze the next day, a shorter distance (these are typical issues a trainer faces coming up to a race). Either way, he will run. Funny Cide is training well and all is good.

Showing Up's next start looks like the Man of War at Belmont on September 9. That is their current preference, if not, they will look at the Sky Classic at Woodbine on September 24. Their goal is to prepare him for the Breeders Cup with one race beforehand.

Update 557: Another Fog article: Peaceful days and hope for Lost in the Fog, which include the following excerpts:

"If so, we're on the right track," Gilchrist said. "His last two days have been his best in two weeks."

and

"I wanted to take him back for the quality of life thing, but I also decided I'm just not going to give up on this horse," Gilchrist said after Lost in the Fog had walked around his barn's shedrow and had a bath. "Right now, I'm standing right in front of him and if you didn't know the situation, you wouldn't even know anything was wrong with him. He's a pretty happy horse right now, enjoying life pretty good. That doesn't mean he's cured; he's still a very sick animal. But we're doing all we can to get him well."

We will have a Fog vigil, wednesday evening, 7 PM. Whereever you are, whatever you are doing, spare some thoughts for Lost in the Fog. He will have an exam thursday to determine his progress.

I asked Graham Motion this morning how his horses are after this weekend's races at Saratoga. He said they all came back well. He has had seven winners at Saratoga so far for the meet, so not a bad meet.

Update 556: Spoke to Michael Matz this morning, he said that Dr. Richardson reported Barbaro had an ok night last night (monday night). I got the update from Michael as I was coming off the woodchip track from my second set. For my first set, I took a two-year-old to the woodchip track for his first time and he was leaping so high in the air he would have made a Lippanzaner jealous. Michael Matz viewed the performance and afterwards asked if I was ok and I said "as long as I have my neck strap, I'm fine!".
updated tuesday 7:20am

Update 555: I think we knew this, but a quick reminder Fog to have new exam on thursday of this week, excerpt:

Lost in the Fog will be examined Thursday by veterinarians from the University of California-Davis to determine if the three cancerous tumors discovered two weeks ago have shrunk. Lost in the Fog has been treated with the steroid dexamethasone since last week.

The article also notes that The Fog sometimes also goes to the track to watch other horses train! This florist has been mentioned on the discussion board as one that might be able to help those wishing to send good wishes. One of our readers discovered a nice note posted on another forum noting Vic Stauffer's (race caller) visit to Lost in the Fog: Lost in the Fog update.

Brother Derek is nearing his return to the races after a long absense since the Preakness: Brother Derek Flashes :58 4/5 Work at Del Mar. His trainer, Dan Hendricks, was kind enough to provide us a Barbaro interview. I had forgotten to mention Lawyer Ron's return to the races: Lawyer Ron Takes Inaugural St. Louis Derby, who was another triple crown hopeful until Barbaro dominated the Derby.

Most Barbaro news yesterday was a rehash of the New Bolton update: Barbaro May Soon Get Cast Removed Completely and Barbaro's cast may be off soon.

Top of the morning to you, Alex!!! :-)
You've given us plenty to read this morning, so I'm going to grab another coffee and look at your links!

Team Barbaro morning shift checking in. Lots of good stuff to read - thank you Alex.

I'm praying the news about LITF is encouraging.

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 29, 2006 9:55 AM

Alex...just a couple of things

In the report about Brother Derek's workout it says that another horse "broke in" on him. What does this mean?

Will you let us know if he's definately going to be running in the El Cajon on Saturday?

Fingers and toes crossed for the Fog on Thursday, and hoping that if the tumors haven't shrunk (and I hope they have!)they've at least stayed the same. I'm pushing the other possibility right to the back of my mind!

I see that NBC are down to weekly updates now, which is good! Everyone is going to be on tenterhooks when it comes to Bobby's right cast being removed!

I found this article...Rave Reviews for Woodbine's Polytrack Unveiling...and wasn't sure if it had been posted here yet

JO (UK) Rolls-Royce story too long/not appropriate here...if you want, email me and I'll send you info tonight...and no, I only drive one in my dreams! mllebutterfly@sbcglobal.net

Praying for The Fog to have a good report and, as always, for ACD for our guy! Watched Lawyer Ron in a nice win at St. Louis Derby the other day...I remember him even though I was focused on Barbaro, and glad to see him come through...seemed like his people were disappointed in his previous performances. I just love 'em all - even Bernardini - and don't seem to have the concern about the HOY award that others feel...Barbaro has proven that he has grander purposes than can be achieved on a race track!

ACD - heal, hoof, heal!!!

Good morning all! While waiting for positive news from Alex, I was reading links from recent updates and noticed this article about the new Polytrack surface that opened for equine traffic at Woodbine this past Sunday - to rave user reviews. I see that Jo (UK) found it as well and posted the link.

Ernie (the tee-shirt lady) is back from vacation; WELCOME BACK ERNIE! We've missed you. I'm looking forward to receiving my "Barbaro with nose in the roses" tee-shirt.

The news about LITF is so encouraging; and I am hoping for good news following further exams reportedly set for Thursday.

hi alex and all -- thank you again for all of the wonderful racing information, very touching tribute to both barbaro and the fog by Mr. Stauffer.

Well, it's a nice quiet morning here in miami, but I'm sure this time tomorrow will be quite different...here's to minimal power outages this year.

Good morning all. Thanks Alex for the sight--saw the article on you--very informative, love the background information--one of the things that I love about this sight and of course all the personalities that are emerging. Many people from all over the world with common interest-- love of the horse! For someone who does not get to the backstretch/barn area--THANKS!

Alex,

Is an "OKay NIGHT" any different than "a Comfortable Night?" It sounds like that is almost a downgrade?

My lip is quiverring a bit...

If you could, when you get a chance, could you please clarify that....? Thanks

Leslie in MN

Posted by: Leslie in MN at August 29, 2006 11:31 AM

I'd love to have seen that, Alex! It must have been quite an impressive sight for Michael to ask if you were ok!! LOL

Does an "ok night" mean the same as "another comfortable night"?

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 29, 2006 11:34 AM

Good Morning Barbaro. Have a great day with lots of treats and scratches.
Glad to get Michael's report from Dr. R.
Alex, just one question, do you think an OK night is the same as ACN? It is just me, the worry wort wondering.
Good Morning Everyone, have a great day.
Sharri

Posted by: Sharri in Ohio at August 29, 2006 11:34 AM

I think we've all noticed the not so positive "ok night" after ACN for so long now. Hope we're just being paranoid and overly anxious, but I'm a little on edge now.

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 29, 2006 11:41 AM

OK night? What does this mean? Not comfortable??

Posted by: Deb G. at August 29, 2006 11:49 AM

Good morning all , saw Barbaro had an ok night last night. I'm hoping that means the same as ACN. Thanks Alex,, and all the posting and links to read were GREAT. It's great to hear more about The Fog and Brother Derek. It all adds to our knowledge and interest in racing and horses.

Barbaro , hope that new cast fits like a velvet glove for you, and you get out to walk and graze. Bad weather is coming soon according to the hurricane/tropical storms reports so you enjoy yourself before the rains come.

### Alex, thank you for the report. It means the world to me to hear Barbaro is okay. It literally makes my day and I would be lost without it.

Barbaro , graze on , big guy and keep healing.
Home for Christmas !!!

Posted by: Bobbie B. at August 29, 2006 11:49 AM

Hey all -- ACN and OK, who knows but that they are the same thing if you learned the "other" English language! Betcha all is weller than ever. Cast may be off soon, great news! Wishing good news for Fog's Thursday exam. -- Peace, Susan in Saratoga

Posted by: Susan H at August 29, 2006 11:50 AM

Thank you Alex.
So sorry but I am a bit nervous about o.k. night as well.
Should we be?

Posted by: Jeri at August 29, 2006 11:50 AM

### Alex , I'm picturing you on a Lippazaner and also on a bucking bronco, leaping around. It's a good laugh this morning ( since you didn't get hurt !! ) I've seen the Lippazaners and thats some leaping. Guess that got you wide awake for the rest of the morning !! LOL

Posted by: Bobbie B. at August 29, 2006 11:53 AM

We are like trained dogs here..cant go changing things on us now! LOL LOL WE have to have our routine so if ok and comfortable are the same, please advise.....woof woof "Must have "comfortable treat" dont want "ok treat" ...woof.

Good morning Bobby and everyone! I'm glad you had another good night, Bobby, and hoping that your day ahead is a very good one! :)

Posted by: Ruth Ann at August 29, 2006 12:03 PM

Leslie, that is so funny!

I just reread Upenn's update from yesterday after the Sunday cast change, and it said Barbaro was "bright and happy". I like that even better than ACN. I think I'll hold that thought rather than "an OK night"!

Barbaro, have another healing day. In just a short time one of those cast will be off. What a glorious day!

Alex, thanks again for all your hard work. I am a horseracing fan and I love all your updates on other horses. But my heart and thoughts are always with Barbaro.

Posted by: Patty in Dallas at August 29, 2006 12:05 PM

Alex, thank you for the update. Can you**please** clarify why Barbaro only had an ok evening? Is Dr. R using different terminology because he is vacationing? Sorry for the question, but you never say ok evening. Am I reading into things? Is the cast change comfortable for our boy?

I loved the article about Lost in the Fog and his traininer Greg Gilchrist. Greg seems like a wonderful person. Keep going out and watching your buddies and continue enjoying your food, our love. We are all keeping you in our thoughts. Those tumors must shrink!

Since the Fog is having his next exam on Thursday, I invite anyone who would like to join me in a vigil at 7PM eastern time Wednesday night to pray that the tumors have shrunk so they can be removed.

Hay Barbaro, another thought. You must be quite the swimmer after all the time you have spent in the pool. Maybe when you heal, you could be a two sport horse!

Thanks to Alex & Tim -- hope you guys have enough time for your real jobs !

I'm sure everyone has heard the saying that "great minds think alike". Today is a perfect example. Many of us picked up on the "OK" rather than "ACN" and reacted the same way. Aren't we worriers?? I guess we will have to wait for further clarification.

OK Night? works for me. Its a little cloudy in Chester County...but Barbaro can still get outside to graze.

Greg Gilchrist is showing his class and compassion...good to see LITF is surrounded by a lot of positive energy. Good Morning, my Long Time Sun. I'm glad you're around the energy of the track...gives you so much to live for...

dear alex,
ti loved the copy for your articel on your work and site..and also glad yuor morning breeze was so peppy..thank you so for the supportive and wonderufl updates on the horse nation ..and for beloved barbaro, surgery is always challenging for humans espec. the going under part..and the body has to clean itself out afterwards and one doesnt really feel so great..
i imagine that going under in surgery afffects horses as humans..it is my prayer that his system cleans it all out and the race to get him healed all in balance.. TIME AND REST tlc..our love ,prayers...it is here for you barbaro..
may good green grass and his wonderful nutritionists and staff, will get him clean and ready to roll.
.the after effects i would imagine --stay in the blood and are halluvinatory as the body sheds the toxins ..the post op revovery..so they had to get the cast and leg checked out so it is coim-lex and we are blessed to have the best care he can have..
you great being barbaro,
, we pray for your resumption of your healing and hoof growing and system clean and clear to enjoy your grazing.--have no fear..faith...dear lord keep you safe and well on your jmorning recovery..
.we are all here ..to support you and all concerned.
.i pray for everyones heart and joy..even though i tremble, am on edge,worry..i got to let it go.. , i let go and focus on this moment..the only moment i have..
in peace and love and strength..for all..
take care of our hearts so bobby will feel our love big time..

Starting my day with good thoughts for Barbaro and Fog and wishing the best for all you folks in Florida. Batten down the hatches! Here in "tornado alley" it's been a calm year!

What a FABULOUS idea to nominate Mike Rea for an extreme home makeover! How can ABC NOT do this!?!? Keep us posted on how we can help.

####
Landfall for Hurricane Katrina was 1 year ago today--right about now. Please keep all the victims--human and animal in your thoughts today. Estimated 250,000 animals in NOLA alone and just 15,000 rescued.

I'm in for the vigil for Fog tomorrow night.

Have a great day, everyone. Strength and healing to our champ, Barbaro!

re Brother Derek (and now that internet has returned here) and my past notes re Barbaro being 'struck from behind', I believe I stressed the word, Allegory, in this Incident. And, yes, Alex, do stay on; those Flying Rides are the Most Rewarding-provided you're sitting a Noble Steed, and both of you, with Talent! Best wishes, †KAWilson

ALEX - are you having a mid-life career change to a rodeo rider??? As my English Nana would have said, "Mind your head!"

We're really creatures of habit here, so "OK" gives us all the shivers...praying that it's just a synonym for "comfortable." ...or maybe just a wee bit less positive because of lingering effects from cast change?? Trying hard not to panic.....

MR. GILCHRIST - you and all of The Fog's people are such a class act! We're all praying for a good report from Thursday's appointment! How thoughtful of you to introduce that little girl to your best boy...you may have changed her life in ways you can't possibly know yet! You're awesome!

To our Floridians...keep a sharp eye and don't get foolhardy - I worry ALMOST as much about tropical storms as hurricanes, and we ALL worry about you down there in paradise! Bail out if necessary!

Barbaro - wishing you a marvelous day - not ok, not even comfortble...MARVELOUS! Love you, handsome!

Good morning, Starshine!

You're doing well this morning, right? Am I being overly analytical about "okay" vs. "comfortable"? Please don't be regressing, baby.

Hold on to your neck strap, Alex, literally and metaphorically.

Alex, you don't need coffee in the morning do you? One ride like that will shake the cobwebs pretty quickly, I imagine!

God bless Barbaro, keep him strong, make him stronger.

God bless Foggy, let his test results be good on Thursday.

God bless Chief, help his systems to adjust...

Have a great day everyone!

Goood mooorring Barbaromanics (and of course our wonderful Bobby!!!!)

I thought the same thing when I saw "ok" as opposed to ACN. Of course, with everything Bobby has been through in the last couple of months it is only naturally for us to worry. He's probably tired from Dr. Richardson's b-day celebration and the cast change :-)

Here's praying he continues on his road to a full recovery. We will be here for the duration.

Posted by: Nancy in CHIC :-) at August 29, 2006 1:18 PM

Saw the word "ok" and started to panic. Then I walked away from my computer, grabbed some coffee, and thought more about it. I've decided we're just spoiled rotten. "Ok" is still pretty decent, particularly considering what Barbaro has been through. Remember when laminitis hit, we'd have been thrilled to hear "ok". Now we're in a frenzy! Barbaro was under general anesthesia yesterday, so it makes sense that he's maybe less than chipper. He's gone through so much, he deserves "ok" every once in a while. Plus...ok doesn't mean "uncomfortable" or "not good". Keep the faith! (Still, I too would like a clarification from Alex!).

Good Morning Champ! Hope your all stretched out and ready to enjoy another day of relaxing. Have a wonderful time outside and let the sun shine on your back. Soak it up big guy, but don't forget your bug spray! Love you lots.

Anyone remember Big Daddy Wolf? My notes say the trainer was Tim? New trainer maybe? For those who remember Miraculous Miss when she flipped in the gate, seems she is doing well, she has had a workout. Maybe we will see her soon! Michael Matz trained Choreograph was entered in Race 8 at Saratoga yesterday but was scratched. The Jacksons/Lael Barclay Tagg trained Stormy Kiss ran on Sunday at Saratoga for the Ballerina Breeders Cup and placed 3rd. I also show the Jacksons/Lael Klepto Cat having had a workout on Thursday at Saratoga as well. And finally Michael Matz trained Rasta Farian is running on Thursday at Saratoga in Race 6, lets hope she pulls out a nice win.

Morning all,

Glad to hear Barbaro is doing well this morning. I was worried about the ok as well but as a few have said on the main page it says he had another comfortable night so I'll go with that :). I'm sure if anything was wrong we'd hear about it asap.

Hope Fog's test results are positive and as always my thoughts and prayers are with him and everyone around him and of course they are with Barbaro and everyone around him. Hope he gets that cast off soon :). Hope BGC is doing well as well and everything is ok with him too, as well as anyone I left out.

Thanks again as always, Alex for the updates and careful on the horses! Would much rather be doing that than be sitting in this office ;)

Good morning Barbaro. I too was worried about the "ok" night. Maybe you were just a little extra groggy from the cast change. We all know that you are the champ and you'll get through this whole thing. Our prayers are with you and we believe in you. You are one impressive horse. First on the track, and now in this race.

We love you Barbaro.

Hi all, I emailed Alex about our collective nervousness about "ok" versus comfortable and have asked if he could clarify this for us. I am hoping the new cast is not giving Bobby any problems.

Posted by: chris byers at August 29, 2006 1:41 PM

Here is a wonderful post from last night about how extraordinary our Barbaro was on the race track:

I have been watching and betting on racing for over sixty years and this years Kentucky Derby, I saw the greatest racehorse in my life, Barbaro, was awesome, and he just crushed the Derby field.
Barbaro had an unconventional breeze at Churchill-fast and a very long stride (over 25 feet). His internal speed figures were super, best of the week. Barbaro never really quickened--he simply extended his long stride down the stretch and showed complete superiority. He had a stride length of 24 feet going into the first turn, on the backstretch and on the far turn. He maintained the same basic speed for each quarter to the end--but when he hit the stretch, he extended his stride length to 24.9 feet. Thus, he covered the last quarter in fewer strides than he took for each previous quarter. For another horse to beat him that horse would have to have been on even terms at the quarter pole and had a stride length of a minimum of 25 feet down the stretch. And that would have been a real stretch. I believe he would have gone on to win the triple crown and set many track records, he was not only the best racehorse
I ever saw, but was in a class by himself.

Good Morning Barbaro Team! I've only posted here a couple of times, and I agree with all of you that Barbaro's purpose may be bigger than the Horse of the Year award. However, I still want to get my 2 cents worth in.

Cannot deny that Bernardini is a beautiful horse and true competitor (fantastic blood lines!) but he still has not won over any horse that Barbaro hadn't won over. This year's Kentucky Derby was so talent laden...

Re: Jerry Bailey's comment on the 7 1/2 length win by Bernardini over Blue Grass Cat being more than Barbaro's 6 1/2 length win over him, 1)Barbaro never felt the touch of the whip; 2)BGC was not an injured horse in the Derby; and 3) the Travers field did not contain 20 horses. I want to acknowledge BGC's courage to even finish the race.

Barbaro also has proven his versatility by winning on dirt, in the slop AND on turf...I don't believe Bernardini has raced on turf yet (or if he will). If Bernardini wins his next race and then goes on to win the BC Classic over older horses, then yes, he should win HOY honors. But we all know that Barbaro will have made a larger impact on the industry, maybe not just by his racing career (and hopefully his progeny), but by the attention he has brought to so many areas of concern in the industry.

Thanks for letting me put my thoughts down in writing...hope you all have a great day!

Healing prayers to you, Barbaro and Foggy!!!

Good Morning All,

I have to say that I feel bad about not picking up on the "OK" as did so many others. I certainly hope that all is fine with our Big Guy, and he did have a comfortable night last night.

But I do remember Dr. R saying somewhere since the L word was mentioned that he wasn't going to jump to conclusions should there be sporadic episodes of departures from the norm.

I don't mean to sound so vague here, but I don't want to start anticipating something that is not.

Hail in summer?? What's happening with the weather? Shannon...I remember Alex telling us quite some time ago that he excercised Big Daddy Wolf so was watching out for him in his last race.

Good morning everyone. I, too, hope OK is as good as comfortable. But it's great news that the pastern joint is fused and there's no infection in the right hind. Maybe some days and nights are better than others.

I loved Vic Stauffer's take on LITF. Looks good, and I'm so glad the tumors are shrinking. That's my dream, too, to see both these horses standing in Kentucky.

Bobby, have a good day, and eat lots of grass!

Thank you for your wonderful article ( and photo ) on Alex Brown and Tim Woolley Racing. I don't know what I and many others would do with out that site not only for Barbaro updates but I am learning so much about horse racing and related issues also. I am hoping the rally in Washington DC on Tuesday Sept. 5th on the bill to ban horse slaughter will convince our representatives to end this cruel barbaric practice.
Thank you again!

Sincerely,
Chris Byers

Posted by: chris byers at August 29, 2006 2:16 PM

David: Completely agree with you. Barbaro is the best I have seen. Was watching him early on. I own a racehorse, just purchased another. Was at the Travers and watched Bernadini. Good horse, not great. Racing against nothing really. His beyer speed is based upon calculations: see this site for info. on how they calculate beyer speed: http://www.horsehats.com/Beyer-Speed-Figures.html
Also, Bernadini's strong length lead was due to the fact he was running agsint "nothing" really. Bluegrass Cat had a fractured pastern, putting him that much more in length behind Bernadini. I am not putting Bernadini down - I think he is a good horse, but getting much more credit than his ability might be worth. We shall see when he races in other races, with more significant horses.....Barbaro is an amazing spirit and showed superior speed and stride.....

Not sure if everybody's seen this article....

Peaceful Days and Hope for Lost in the Fog

Since Lost in the Fog returned to trainer Greg Gilchrist's barn at Golden Gate Gate Fields from UC Davis nine days ago, the focus of his care for what was diagnosed as terminal cancer has shifted.

Instead of simply making what were believed to be the colt's final days as comfortable as possible with pain medication, efforts also are being made to shrink three cancerous tumors and perhaps extend his life.

"We're using steroids and also holistic medicine that we consulted someone on," Gilchrist said Monday morning. "It's just like a human situation right now. We've all had a mother or father or sister or brother or friend touched by this disease. This is following right down that road."

Veterinarians from UC Davis are scheduled to scan Lost in the Fog's tumors Thursday at Golden Gate Fields' small equine hospital to determine if they have begun to shrink.

"If so, we're on the right track," Gilchrist said. "His last two days have been his best in two weeks."

The first tumor, located in Lost in the Fog's spleen, was discovered Aug. 13. An operation tentatively was scheduled to remove the spleen, but a laparoscopy performed Aug. 18 revealed two more cancerous tumors: one in a ligament suspended from the spleen and a larger one along the roof of the back.

In a national conference call, Dr. Don Smith, Lost in the Fog's racetrack veterinarian, termed the cancer terminal, and Gilchrist said that he would bring the horse back to Golden Gate Fields instead of having him euthanized at UC Davis.

Unlike his experience on the racetrack, in which he was favored in all 14 starts -- 11 of them wins -- Lost in the Fog remains a huge longshot to survive. Still, according to Smith, cancer accounts for only 0.2 percent of deaths in horses

A QUESTION FOR PEOPLE: A quick question... I've been thinking about this for awhile. What exactly does it mean to have a fused pastern? I'm assuming it means that Barbaro will lose all mobility in that joint. Would he basically be walking as if he had a clubbed foot? In the videos, he seems to be walking normal. I would think a fused joint would result in an awkward gait (even at a walk). Any insight into this and how it impacts Barbaro's mobility would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

PS Thinking of you Barbaro! So happy that you are doing well!

Jo, thanks for the article you posted. LITF captured my heart as well, just like Barbaro and so many others recently, all of whom I'd never had heard of if not for Barbaro. Just a testament to how amazing a horse he really is. Oh, wanted to mention that I spent a term studying at the Univ of Manchester in Spring 2004 - loved it!

J.Carson Black - in one of your posts you said you were glad the tumors were shrinking - was that a typo or am I reading too much into it? If it wasn't where did you hear that (it's possible it was posted previously but I may have missed it) - if so, I'm so glad too. But the word was that they wouldn't test him till Thursday, unless you have inside info? Please clarify as I got excited after I read your post. Sorry if I'm mistaken or read too far into it. I almost double majored in english so I pay attention to detail in writing, my apologies.

Lynn, thanks for the note - yeah I think I'm drawn here even more now after posting ;) Can't get enough haha

Just a side note: Trinity is broken, but after reading Alex's post (and he's experienced in this), can't help but wonder what my first ride will be like on her - she's only 2 herself, almost 3. ;) haha

It sure is pretty cloudy here in Pa - (I work and live not too far from Fair Hill actually, maybe 30 min drive? (I think) ) Hopefully Barbaro gets out early or has already gotten out to graze a little before the rain comes!

Erica...fused means it has healed back together.
I would think that he would probably have somewhat of a hitch in his gait, but that would be from the combination of all of his fractures.
My ex-racehorse had a broken sesamoid bone when he was pulled off the track. It healed and he could walk, trot and canter fine...just no heavy sport work. Hope this helps!

The fog is happy and enjoying life, and the last two days have been his best in two weeks.
I know I've said this before (probably more than once!) but what a lovely man Greg Gilchrist is!
He wouldn't give up on this horse when the prognosis was so dire. Let's hope it's good news on Thursday...I'm in for the vigil!

Jake said Bluegrass Cat likely that the surgery won't be difficult, considering how Bluegrass Cat came out of the race. Of course, any time there's anesthesia, as we all know (and freak out about, rightfully so, every time Bobby goes under). But I'm thinking he'll be as good as new, except they won't race him--he'll go right to stud. That's just a guess, though.

Jake when are they doing Bluegrass Cat surgery?
Anesthesia freaks me out, big time. Where is he?

Saying a prayer for the Cat right now!

If you remember they said Gallent Secret surgery was not life threatening too, and she died.

Ryan, I saw it up above somewhere. I don't know how much they're shrinking.

Debbie - I have no idea. I check Bloodhorse a lot - if he has surgery, we'll know it there. Or, besides Tim Woolley, the best place to go for breaking information is thoroughbredchampions.com - the forum there.

Posted by: Debbie A.L. at August 29, 2006 3:05 PM

Dear Horse Lovers, Here is my response from Senator Feinstein. She is on our side.

Thank you for writing to me to express your opposition to the practice of horse slaughter for human consumption. I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.

Like you, I believe this practice is wrong, and was glad when Californians passed a state initiative prohibiting it in 1998. As you may know, I was a cosponsor of an amendment which aimed to stop this practice by withholding funds for U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA) inspections under the Federal Meat Inspection Act. I, along with several congressional members, sent a letter to the USDA urging the agency to stop these inspections and effectively end this practice.
Unfortunately, the USDA has ruled that these three horse slaughterhouses may continue operation under a fee-based inspection process in order to abide by the Federal Meat inspection Act.

You may wish to know that I have cosponsored both the "Virgie S. Arden American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act" (S. 1915) and a bill to restore the prohibition on the commercial sale of wild free-roaming Horses and Burros (S. 576). If signed into law, the "Virgie S. Arden American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act" would effectively end horse slaughter for human consumption in the United States. At this time, S.
1915 has been referred to the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation and S. 576 has been referred to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, of which I am a member. Please know that as a longtime fan of horses, I will do what I can to see that this practice ends.

Again, thank you for writing to me about this issue. If you have any additional comments or questions, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. staff at (202) 224-3841.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator

I was always drawn to just look at Edgar gazing up, but today I just noticed that Barbaro has his lead strap in his mouth..LOL He he is holding it in his mouth as if to say " Here it is buddy, come on take me for a walk! " Awe.. It's just precious, can't believe I never noticed that part before.

Barbaro, I read that you had an "ok" night. I pray everything is all right with you today. I got so used to "ACN" that I'm spoiled by those wonderful words. Here's more healing light, energy and love for you so that we can hopefully get back to those "ACN's." I love you, Handsome, and you're in my heart 24/7.

Posted by: Mary Allen at August 29, 2006 3:25 PM

What does OK mean ?

I thought quite hard about the right words for this morning. ACN has become our "mantra" and any report I hear that is positive basically gets communicated as another comfortable night.

This morning Michael told me Barbaro had an "OK" night. I got a sense that things were not as fantastic as things had been, but yet "OK" remains "OK", we have been in much worse situations. I thought I would simply report ANC, but then I thought I really owe it to those of you who read this site in the morning, to add the very (very) small down grade in the news. very small.

We have been warned on numerous occasions that before this is over, Barbaro will have ups and downs in his well being. I don't even think this is considered a down, I just know that the news has been so super good lately that any word that does not support that could create concern. so please don't be concerned. I will get updates later today I am sure.

Continued healing for the two boys, Barbaro and Foggy and all of the other animals and their owner that may not quite be 100% at this time. Stay well/stay strong.
Alex has been very forth coming with his posts so if "OK" was an ominous OK he would have clarified. So don't stress just keep that positive flow going.

Renee, I can't remember where I read it, but I think Edgar is planning on visiting the big guy again; once his schedule opens up a little.

I too adore ALL the Edgar and Barbaro photos. And the fact that Edgar has visited him without any press and in the early morning etc, really speaks volumes about the class this man has. I admire him.

Alex, thank you for the clarity and honesty. I just need to keep reminding myself Barbaro is in ICU, not in a Med/Surg "bed" as humans, so for ICU, it is still serious in nature.Perhaps the residuals of the anesthesia made for an "OK" nite. But continue in the good, positive thoughts for our sweetie Barbaro.

thank you alex. you're the best. i agree with deb g, it's sure to have something to do with the whole anesthesia/cast thing. he probably has very unpleasant memories from the time it took 15 hours or thereabouts to recover, i think horses remember alot more than we sometimes give them credit for. i'm sure he'll bounce back in a day or two.

Another beautiful day in Tryon, NC and SOooooooo glad to see that posts are going forward. Thank you Alex for another day with these fine people.

Good Morning to my sweet Barbaro.

I hope someone can update me on Foggy's condition. I know a little about cancer and it's treatment as my dad and son are currently battling this disease, but my question is how can there be appreciable shrinkage in the tumors in these past few weeks? Is the drug that they are injecting into Fog as potent as to see shrinkage so soon??
Thanks in advance for your insight.

Sweetest Barbaro, I hope that OK means you had ACN.

I wish that your day be filled with baskets of carrots and apples and sugar treats and maybe even a graze with Michael.

Keep healing and growing that hoof.

Hope Dr. R enjoys a little R&R even though the weather is terrible.

Alex, may you always have your neck strap to keep you safe.

Posted by: Dawn in Omaha at August 29, 2006 3:40 PM

It seems the dept. of agriculture ( refuse to capitalize them) is the big problem. Are they hand in glove with the big money on this? That's usually the answer to most of these problems. What can be done about them. Ya'll know I'm talking about the horse slaughter bill, right, since I didn't really say.

If they can go around laws made by our congress, who can effect them and stop them ? I'm at a loss.

Barbaro , the main page says ACN so i'm sticking with that ! Hope your new cast is not uncomfortable. Home for Christmas, big B., home.

I also picked up on OK rather than ACH. Is it the same?

I'm with Nancy in CT as far as HOY is concerned. I think Barbaro has done more for the sport than any Triple Crown could do. The will, stamina and physical strength he had to have in order to come this far after such catastrophic injury is all the proof anyone should need to see how great he is.

Keep it up Bobby. ACN at NBC is ADCTR - another day closer to recovery.

I mailed Bobby a bag of real peppermint sticks on Thursday so maybe they will make him feel better.

Posted by: Cathy at August 29, 2006 3:45 PM

I am going to stay positive with Dr R's statements about the healing in his leg, he was very very pleased.

I am hoping that Barbaro's OK night stems only from him getting acquainted with his new cast. Hopefully, he just misses the old smelly one.

But as always I am hoping for a good snug fit, and if Barbaro doesn't like it, and it doesn't fit just right, he will let them know.

Love you Champ!

Looks like we are all going to need a good chin strap, and keep things in perspective...

Once again, Alex...you are our best buddy! We all can see how careful you were about being as precise as possible... I can just imagine the thought and concern you put into the update...(just like you do everyday) and we are deeply appreciative!

Just read Alex's update. I hope it is not the cast , which would require another change. That happened once before if I remember right.

Maybe it is just anything, headache from anaethesia, anything so I guess I shouldn't speculate. Just pray for the best. God has taken care of him so far !! He is a miracle walking.

Let's send him love, prayers , best wishes, and anything to bolster him up. He's such a strong guy , so brave , he tolerates it all in good humor. I will try to emulate him.

Posted by: J. Carson Black at August 29, 2006 3:55 PM

Good morning everyone,

I too was taken aback by "OK". We're so used to "comfortable" but thank you Alex, for the clarification.

Remember, Dr. Richardson said Barbaro was not out of the woods yet but had "a clearer path through the woods", or something along those lines. He's not there yet and we need to still keep praying, positive thoughts, etc, as I know we all continue to do every day.

Someone mentioned a vigil this week for Fog, great idea, let's include Barbaro as well OK?

Grateful these comments are here as I can check today when I'm able for updates and also quickly see that so many of us share the same feelings. This, alone, helps.

Alex, I can't tell you how happy I was to come in and find you and the site up and posting! Glad you wear a neck strap...could you tell me (a novice) what it is about a wood chip track that would make a horse react by leaping? Does it feel extra nice, or what? Thanx for all the good articles. As I've said before, I'm learning more and more each day just coming to this lovely place!

Glad you clarified the "OK" ....it could be a number of factors, maybe our baby was just a wee bit restless, could have been after effects of the anesthesia. While I'm thinking it's not a cause for alarm, I am going to be checking the site all day for any updates.

I hope those tumors are shrinking. I'm happy to note that Foggy's trainer and owner are going to be proactive about him, doing all that they can do to help him in his battle with the cancer.

And now to my darling Barbaro...ah sweetie, did you have a bad dream last night? And no Dr R to come in and tell you all was well? Remember this, brave soul, you are a champion, you are a fighter, you will overcome any adversity, you WILL recover!

Can you twitch the ears for me please? Here comes your morning song

Eat your carrots every day
No more sling,so play in the hay

Sunshine, breezes, grass everywhere
There is nothing to compare

Grow hoof grow! Heal leg heal!
That's become our daily appeal

Keep on doing like you are
You're our bright and shining star!

Be back later to check up on you, babycakes, Hugs and smoochies

Time to light candles for Barbaro.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at August 29, 2006 3:58 PM

I was reading the posts from last night and I had to crack a smile about the friendly banter regarding Barbaro and Bernadini. I think it was Pamela that jumped in and reminded us that this is, after all a spectator sport. It's ok to root for a team if you want to.

I have always enjoyed and learned so much from the postings of many of you. Most subjects have input from all perspectives....drawn from all the different experiences you each have.

In the interest of GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP, there is the idea that each horse respected and treated fairly at the start of every race and may the fastest horse win that day. Good wishes to each of them. ABSOLUTLEY!! OF COURSE!!!

But also, in the interest of healthy competition, there is also choosing "YOUR HORSE" and sticking with it. Earlier this year I was viewing one of the races with my DAD. "HIS HORSE" was Brother Derek and "MY HORSE" was Barbaro. He was "BARBARO-SCMARABO-ing" me, and I was "BROTHER DEREK-SCHMOTHER DEREK-ing" him. Certainly we were not wishing ill will toward each others horse and he is as heart broken as I am about the accident. The subject was the race, but the competition was amoung the humans involved.... as in, which one of us was gonna get to say "HA! TOLD YOU!!"

I think those of us who had Barabaro as "MY HORSE" are feeling like we somehow need to defend him due to the fact that he's out of the game now.
Its been hard...you know..really... Heartbreaking to see Michael Matz second guessing. Hard to watch Barbaro suffer through so many hardships. Emotions run high.

My take is: as long as healthy competition stays within the boundaries of good sportsmanship, its all good.

If you ask me: What is your wish for all racehorses? I would say 'A safe and happy life running like the wind, as they so love to do."

If you ask me: who do you think will win this race? I would say "MY HORSE"

They are all beautiful, aren't they?

*************************************************
Barbaro, I am hoping that you are feeling better today...maybe you just dont like your new cast or you are tired huh? Hopefully we can find out some more later on.
hang tight everyone...

I hope that they have a big cardboard cut out of Dr. Dean in your stall...AND HURRY UP WITH THAT GOAT!

Leslie...Loved your take on "Sportsmanship"!!!
I agree...May all the beautiful horses run like the wind and return home safely.

I am not surprised that Big B may be a bit off. General anesthesia is hard on the body.

If anyone has had general anesthesia they know it can take a day or so to get the cob webs out of the head and the body feeling good again. In fact, some chronically ill patients are considered "high risk" for general anesthesia.

Luckily, Barbaro is young, strong and heatlhy, so he should recover from anesthesia relatively quickly. But, it may take a day or two.

Leslie in MN...You said it much better than I ever did!

Thank you Alex for the clarification and honesty in relaying the precise words used this morning when you inquired.

We must all keep praying for Bobby and keep lighting candles.

Believe in Barbaro

Good mid-morning all. I was worried to see the "OK" connotation in this mornings update as well, but scrolled to read Alex's last post explaining what that meant. Still, looking forward to another update today.

Barbaro, it has been a couple of days since I last left a message here for you. Hopefully, "OK" means that the night was restful but maybe not as restful as some of the others. I'm sure things will be back on track soon. Keep that handsome chin up, enjoy your time outside today, soak up the sun and the fresh air as well as all of the happy, healing thoughts and prayers that are being sent your way. Love you bunches and think of you always. BIG, BIG horsie hugs, kisses, ear scratches, nose rubs, and MUCH LOVE!!!

Hey, Barbaro Nation

Remember the word GRIM...OK is fine by me.

Pamela, great idea of the cutout of Dr. R.

Maybe Dr. R. can call in to tell Mr. B how his vacation is going. :)

Bring on the prayers and carrots.

....Hey...maybe we should make Pres. Bush send Bobby his copy of MY PET GOAT!

Posted by: Pamela at August 29, 2006 4:10 PM

Thank you so much Alex for the clarification.

We so appreciate you and have been so used to ACN for so long that we are nervous. Just can't help it and will check often today.

Good thoughts and prayers for our Barbaro

Pam...lol! At least Barbaro could read it!

Good Morning Barbaro! How great is the love of God, that he is healing your leg and growing your hoof. Praise God for another fine day of recovery! Keep up the good work! Thank you Dr. R. and also other care takers. Many prayers for Foggy to have a good Thursday exam coming up.

SORE ALEX
Thanks so much for the morning update...you were leaping and a hopping, so cute, made me laugh being you were able to sit down and type that to us. What's the horse's name? Maybe I could ride him on mornings I just can't wake up LOL. Everytime I hear the 12 days of Christmas, I will think of Lord Alex leaping. Such a visual!
Also..special thanks for the clarification of "OK". We got to remember here now, that Dr. Dean is away and calling in for the reports. Not the same as when he looks in Bobby's eyes each morning and sees his comfort. Someone other than Dr. Dean seeing him in the morning, probably disturbed the big guy. Just my opinion.

FOGGY PRAYER VIGIL...thanks Patty for posting that, once I read we got til Thursday to work our magic, I felt we need to send positive healing (alot) on Wednesday. Definitely count me in.

Precious Bobby, I hope you are not missing Dr. Dean too much even though I know you are. Be good, he will see you in a couple of days. Healing thoughts for you as always. I love you and will check you all day.

This is true - I called my ancient cat Nuff Nuff on my last trip to see my family in Germany. She went into such a funk.

Shannon...back by popular demand! Thanks...I love this video!

"There can be miracles, When you believe"

Hold that thought!! :-)

Ryan...What did you study at Manchester?

Debbie A.L...what happened to Gallant Secret was awful and unexpected, but we have to stay positive for Bluegrass Cat.

Got a big storm about to hit us here so wish me luck!!

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 29, 2006 4:20 PM

Jo...hope the storm is kind to you...

...I have to confess...I am hooked on Discreet Cat...do you know when he will run again...

(Bobby, I swear I am not cheating!)

Leslie - I love the way you put that.

I do get mad when people gratuitously slam other horses, so I argued the case for Bernardini. And I do love that horse. But Barbaro is number one in my heart, and deep down inside, I believe he could have won the Triple Crown--although that isn't for us to know.

I think Bernardini is an exceptional horse and wish him well. I feel guilty that I couldn't appreciate his Preakness win, but who could? And I would love to see him keep winning.

But Barbaro is running the race that matters most.

Thank you for your wonderful post, and you
