    Barbaro Updates: 61

    updates are now here.

Update 574: Peter Brette just called, he had just spoken to Michael. Barbaro remains comfortable. Michael had visited a little earlier this afternoon, and was now on his way back to visit again. It is certainly a great thing Michael lives so close to NBC, and it is obvious how important Bobby is to everyone!

Alie left this comment re: Kennett Florist's visit today (timestamp: 9:07pm):

    Hello Team BARBARO
I went to NBC 1:30 today. Steve went up earlier.
All was good. Our boy is going well.
We are so happy for his continued healing.
We are praying for Lost in the Fog.
Also please add a girl named Special to prayer list.
Thank you for lunch today, what a surprise!
    You guys are unbelievable.
God Bless, have a wonderful evening.
    We Believe
    Alie

I also received an e-mail from Kennett Florist that the Barbaromaniacs are in the local Kennett Paper (its not online yet, I hope it will be).

The cartoon caption contest has been "judged" (thanks Sabina Pierce) and you can find the results on the discussion board: Just For Fun Caption Contest Winner!.

Finally: Michael Matz and Barbaro: Horse of a Lifetime.

Update 573: Jeannine Edwards has just spoken with Greg Gilchrist, Lost in the Fog's trainer. She sent me this e-mail:

Just spoke to Greg Gilchrist... Lost In The Fog is being examined and having his ultrasounds as I write this. They are scanning him to see if there has been any reduction at all in the size of the tumors. Greg seemed hopeful, albeit realistic, that there may be some options for Foggy. He said by this time next month... NEXT MONTH...they would have a better idea of whether or not Foggy is going to make it. That's a whole lot better than the "2 weeks to live" we heard 10 days ago. Greg said Foggy has gained some weight back, they are feeding him smaller meals 4 times a day, and when I asked what his daily routine is, Greg said "Whatever he feels like doing." They walk him, take him out for grass, take him near the track to watch training, give him baths, etc. He said right now the horse seems happy and perky, and because of the cancer treatment options available to humans, they are hopeful of being able to try something on Foggy. The problem is that cancer is very rare in equines, and so the treatment data is relatively obscure. Perhaps Foggy will become the "poster horse" for successful cancer treatment. Greg said he will give me an update on the ultrasound findings tomorrow.

Racing this weekend is on ESPN at 4:30 pm, NOT ESPN2 as reported yesterday in update 565.

Update 572: Bluegrass Cat has returned to his breeders in Kentucky in preparation for stud duty next year: Bluegrass Cat returns to the Blue Grass. The article includes a short video clip of his arrival.

Circle of Life: another lovely video by Melissa Harden.

Update 571: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg to catch up with Funny Cide. Barclay said he galloped three times around the "Clare Court" track today. When I first heard that I thought Barclay was kidding with me, then he went on to explain it is a small training track at Saratoga, about 3/8ths / half mile round. Funny Cide relaxes more galloping on that track. I know he is a very strong horse to gallop, so I guess anything to help him relax. Anyway all remains well for saturday. The Daily Racing Form had this article: Team Funny Cide thrilled to be back which noted the following:

There is a caveat to Funny Cide running in the Woodward. Trainer Barclay Tagg said he would not run if the track came up wet, and the weather forecast is iffy, based on the path of Tropical Storm Ernesto.

I asked Barclay about this and he confirmed that if the track came up really sloppy they would likely not run. Lets hope for better weather. The article also notes Funny's next objective, the Hawthorne Gold Cup, September 30.

Update 570: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (wednesday night). Michael Matz gave me the news as I was coming off the woodchip track on my first set. I was surprised to get the news so early so I hung around by the tunnel that goes under the dirt track so that MIchael could catch up and confirm that's what he had told me which he did. Just about to get on my second set which I presume will be Chappy who I think we are planning to breeze tomorrow.
    updated thursday 6:40am

Update 569: This morning we have two more articles that discuss the merits of this outstanding three year old crop. The first: THOROUGHBRED BEAT showcases Bernardini, Barbaro, Lawyer Ron, Henny Hughes and Discreet Cat. The second: Bernardini towers over 3-year-old peers now discusses Bernardini and Barbaro, and interviews the trainer of Sweetnorthernsaint (who was actually betting favourite of the Kentucky Derby) Mike Trombetta. A couple of excerpts:

"The only thing you can say with any certainty is both were bound for greatness," said Mike Trombetta, trainer of Sweetnorthernsaint, the Laurel-based gelding that finished seventh behind Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby and second behind Bernardini in the Preakness. "Everyone saw what Barbaro could do. And now everyone is seeing what Bernardini can do. It's hard to compare them. They're alike in that they both win. All the time. No matter what happens, they just keep winning."

    and

"We'll obviously never know what would have happened if they had run against each other at their best," Trombetta said. "It's too bad. I know I would have loved to see it."

    and

Trombetta hopes to run Sweetnorthernsaint for many years, but he harbors no illusions. Asked if he expected to run into Bernardini again, he just laughed.

    "Not on purpose," he said.

Its a big day for Lost in the Fog, here is a lovely poem, by Gloria (updates 60: timestamp 4:39 pm):

    "In Our Hearts"

Lost in the Fog, such a mystical name,
For a magical horse who's achieved so much fame,
A sprinter who soars above mere mortal ground,
A champion who's proved that his talents abound.

Excitement and joy you have given us all,
And thankful we are that in your special stall,
Surrounded by comfort and care of your friends,
You can see all that love through your own special lens.

Your spirit is shining, to vanquish this foe,
And we will hold on until you say "let go."
We're with you, in this your most challenging race,
And praying that you will receive extra grace.

You're not "lost", but we're "searching" for ways to convey
How much you have shown us that words cannot say,
Please know that we value what sets you apart
For, Lost in the Fog, you've been "Found in our Hearts."

Thanks for the Articles. Nice reading! Definitely a very big day for The Fog.

Good morning Bobby and everyone! I hope you had another good night, Bobby, and an even better day ahead! :) The best of luck to LITF today, I am so glad that they are trying to save him with the treatments.....will be praying that they work.
Bobby and Lost, you are both in my prayers!

Good morning, Bobby, Alex and all!

Bobby, I hope you had a nice comfy night full of sweet stud muffin dreams, and also hope you get out for a walk and munch on some fresh grass soon.

Alex...any idea when we'll here about the Fog? I know they're way behind my time, but I'd like to have an idea of when news can be expected.

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 9:14 AM

Today we will all be waiting not only for Bobby's report but the test results for LITF. I just remembered that the Fog is out West, so those of us on the East Coast we will need more patience than usual.

    Grow hoof grow!
    Shrink tumors shrink!

Good morning, Barbaro and all loyal citizens of Barbaro Nation!

I will be praying for good news from the West Coast re: Lost in the Fog. Also hope the weather here in the East will allow our boy an outside stroll.

Anyone trying to keep up with the WEG? The United States has absolutely NO coverage except for this thing called HorseTV (I don't even know if that channel even exists or not). There is a live feed here http://www.aachen2006.de/accom_video_e.htm

Does anyone know if there is a better way to watch it? This feed is terrible.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 31, 2006 9:25 AM

I love the poem by Gloria! I'm wishing so hard for a better prognosis for the Fog today.

Lynda...I'm watching it now!! It's been covered quite well over here! :-)

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 9:29 AM

This is an interesting article. I don't know if it's been posted yet.

These are a couple of paragraphs that were interesting.
    http://www.thehorse.com/viewarticle.aspx?ID=7522

Forms of cancer found in horses include melanoma, lymphoma, squamous cell carcinoma, granulosa cell tumor, and cancers of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, gastrointestinal tract, and bone.

Though statistics show more than 80% of gray horses over the age of 15 will develop at least one melanoma in their life, the tumors are usually benign. The most common form of metastasizing tumor is lymphoma. This tumor spreads to various parts of the body, and there are very limited treatment options for this form of cancer, which affects less than 1% of the horse population.

"We do have some chemotherapeutic protocols that are somewhat effective, but usually in veterinary medicine our goal of treatment is to maintain a good quality of life rather than to treat for a cure of the cancer," Davis said. "To clear the cancer completely from the system is difficult."

Because it is rare and horses do not often show symptoms until it is too late, it can be hard to diagnosis cancer in equines at the early stages.

"Most of the time when I diagnose lymphoma in horses, I will have a client that is just completely blown away because they'll say, 'A month ago I went to a horse show, and he performed great,' " Davis said. "There is no chance that horse was normal a month ago, but horses in general are all heart. They do what they know how to do, they do what they think they are supposed to do, and they are a prey species; therefore, it is to their advantage for survival to not let you know that something's wrong."

Jo, When it comes to equestrian sports, I wish I was over where you are!!!! The tv stations coudlnt care less about horse sports. They would rather show darts than dressage or jumping.

Well, I am hoping mabe I can buy WEG tapes. I would like to find the 1978, 1982, and 1986 WEG. but I doubt I will find them back that far.

    ###########

Jo - I'm sure from that side of the Atlantic, you have more patience than the rest of us. Are you 5 hours ahead?

Lynda - have you contacted ESPN and asked why they aren't covering the games? I agree with you that they should.

    Janice
PS - Has anyone heard from Cindilou lately?

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 31, 2006 10:06 AM

Lynda...it really surprises me that it's so bad over there for tv coverage of equestrian events! You'd think they could just knock off one of the weather channels! LOL

Maybe we have more sports channels here...unfortunately we still gets darts and other sports that would send me to sleep, but not at the sacrifice of other sports! :-)

I agree the live stream is worse than useless!

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 10:07 AM

    ####
Lynda - Somewhere I found information that NBC (TV network) will have WEG coverage on Sept.24 - 4:30 - 6:00 pm EST.

I agree - when it comes to equestrian coverage, living in the States is the pits! ESPN used to cover Grand Prix show jumping, but even that has vanished.

Posted by: Marg in Maine at August 31, 2006 10:08 AM

    Janice...yeah, it's 11.10am here.

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 10:10 AM

Janice; ESPN is useless. They barely do a decent job with horse racing. Believe me, if the World Championship of Ping Pong was on, they would prempt horse racing for it.

Jo: Hahaha yea they could! Or at least one of the 50 news-all-day channels LOL.

Marge; Yea, I heard that too. But I am not holding my breath. Usually, when they show Olympic 3 day eventing, they show mostly the cross country and only a little bit of the show jumping. They show very little dressage if they show any at all.

This "HorseTV" is supposed to have rights to the WEG, but from what I am getting off of the Chronicle of the Horse web site, very few cable companies even have that station.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 31, 2006 10:15 AM

Jo - I have some questions and hope you may have some answers.

Are all European tracks grass? Has anyone compared the breakdown rate on grass against the breakdown rate on dirt? I believe I read somewhere that the grass is a better cushion, in the event of rain, it is far more treacherous. I'm also wondering about the breakdown rate of European racers vs. American racers. There has to be some way to find out if the horrendous breakdown rate in the states is due to track conditions or poor breeding or just running horses that arent' sound.

Have you read anything about these issues over there?

    Janice

Good luck to Lost In The Fog. I'm praying for you buddy! Hold your head up! xoxo

Posted by: Darla at August 31, 2006 10:24 AM

Lynda - I have to agree about ESPN. I've noticed that even shows like Wire to Wire are telecast at 2:00 AM. I don't think the cable company determines that schedule, I believe it's the network. With all the channels ESPN has now, you would think there would be room for more horse related events.

    Janice

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 31, 2006 10:26 AM

Janice, yes, I really hate that. I wish it was on in the early afternoon here and I would watch it all the time. Yea, its the station, not the cable company when it comes to things like when the shows come on. If stations wonder why more people don't watch horse sports, it is because they either don't get up at 2am to watch Wire to Wire (I used to do that when I lived in CA!!) Or people tune in to watch a race and its preempted, so they shut it off thinking it's not going to be on.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 31, 2006 10:31 AM

    Lynda,
Do you remember a few weeks ago (can't remember which race it was) when golf ran more than an hour and a half late and the race that was supposed to run at 5 came on at around 7? I wonder how many people gave up waiting. I know there were a bunch of us Barbaromaniacs that waited (we were all complaining on this site) but I bet lots of people didn't.

I loved the piece from Jeanine, Alex - I miss most of the racing programs other than the triple crown and the Breeders cup, as hubby and I are also golf fanatics, but the article gives all the dates, so I'll know what's coming up and hubby's prett easy to negotiate with for a little horse time :o) - good to see that Barbaro is still doing great - and we've offered prayers for Lost in the Fog - have a great day - it's going to be a beauty by the looks of it when the sun was coming up this AM....watch out for those deer!

    Peg

Posted by: Peg at August 31, 2006 10:47 AM

Janice, No, I don't remember that, but if it was a few weeks ago, that's when I was working 12 hour shifts at work, so I was sleeping. That does not suprise me. Did they even say anything during the golf broadcast that the race would be late? How much did they show after the golf was over, I wonder? I know they have cut into the racing, and then when they actually get to it, they don't update anything and they even barely show the end of the race. No interviews, no going over the race, nothing. I have seen that too many times. What is going to happen now that ESPN has the Breeder's Cup? They are liable to preempt that.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 31, 2006 10:48 AM

Alex - thanks so much for the good report. I laughed so hard reading it. ;>) I guess all of us Barbaromaniacs are so paranoid about Bobby's condition and interpret every single word used to describe it that we have infected you somewhat.

    Lynda,

12 hour shifts - yikes! re: the race, if I recall correctly, they did do an abbreviated broadcast. During the golf game they had a trailer across the bottom of the screen from time to time stating that the race would follow. They didn't do it immediately though, and I was surfing all over the place looking for the race. I finally gave up and got on this site and saw that others commented about the race being delayed due to the golf game. So I knew then that it wasn't my cable company goofing up. Recently there was a basketball game but that wasn't a very long delay.

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 31, 2006 10:57 AM

Janice...all the courses I've seen televised in the UK are grass, and I've been wondering why your main tracks are dirt-track and not grass.

As to your other questions, I've been wondering about the answers myself, especially after reading about deaths at the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and I hate the Grand National because it's pretty certain that a horse will die, although I heard this is the first year they all survived, but I'll have to check up on that. I usually blank out this race every year because it upsets me so much.

Anyway...I found this article which shows there are investigations into fatalities on UK courses at least, but I haven't found out if the statistics have been published yet.

It would be interesting to compare US with UK statsitics, but something that might affect results is that we have steeplechases here and I'm not sure if you do over there. At least I haven't seen any races where your horses jump fences, but I'm pretty new to the racing scene!

Here's the link...but be prepared for a couple of disturbing images.

Jo, we don't have too much steeplechasing here, but we do have some. Saratoga will have, like a steeplechase a week, and Colonial Downs has it, as well as Keenland when it is open. There may be a few other tracks, but it's not nearly as prevalent as Europe.

I am not sure about the dirt track thing. I always though turf racing was more elegant. Definitely cleaner LOL.

Jo, I have seen that video before. We have groups like that here and you do have to be careful of them. Even though they have good hearts, I think, they would have us put our horses in padded stalls or else let them all be wild. I am afraid that if we did all they wanted us to do we would not be using horses for anything and they would be treated like cows.

Posted by: Linda at August 31, 2006 11:24 AM

Lynda, I agree with you...tey're hearts are in the right places but sometimes they can be a little extreme. I've just been to their website through the link at the bottom, but couldn't face watching the video of horse deaths on the track...bad enough when you see something like that by accident.

Still it would be nice to see some statistics from the Jockey Club published, but these things seem to be swept under the carpet, much like over there when a horse breaks down and is vanned off. It's like it never happened.

I do agree with you about grass courses...call me soft but they always seem so much more horse friendly!

Have you done a search on any of our courses?
Check http://www.yorkracecourse.co.uk/ out...it's very close to me and where Enticing ran recently :-)

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 11:26 AM

    Jo

thanks so much for that information. I've been wondering if it's just a USA problem but it appears that it's not. I've also wondered if running the other direction (I assume all European tracks run clockwise; ours - counter clockwise) has any effect. I don't know why that would, but just a thought.

I can't stand steeplechase and would never watch it. You almost know that there ARE going to be breakdowns.

I do appreciate the link you provided, and even more so, I really appreciate the warning. Knowing me, I'd better not check it out. I would carry those images to my grave. At the very least, I probably wouldn't be able to sleep right for weeks. I just don't have the strength for that. I'm a real wuss and can't stand to see animals suffer.

Well - I'm hoping and praying as I know many of our fellow Barbaromaniacs are that horse racing on both sides of the Atlantic can be made safer for our equine friends and that care for horse becomes more important than winning. If horse racing is to survive - that is what must happen, IMHO.

Have a great day one and all! I'll check back later for a "Foggy" update.

Hiya, Bobbey! ACN = always comforting news to receive before I make my over to Little Rhody for work. I hope that NBC has a sunny day today so that you may get outside for a nice graze, sweet prince, and get to see the goat. May your day be a glorious one filled with carrots, studmuffins, & a massage. Do you ever see any pretty fillies in your perambulations around NBC? Jo, thanks for the link!! I haven't done too much of a search, but when Gary Stevens went over there to ride, I found a news site from there that gave horse racing updates, so I could keep track of how he was doing. I think Europe does a great job with their horse racing updates. I think part of our problem here is that we are drowning in too much horse racing, and sports in general.

    Good Morning Everyone,

ACN, Barbaro, what wonderful words to see. Everyday is a new day and another step closer to the day you will be able to go home. Have a wonderful day with lots of treats, scratchies and and a trip outside if the weather permits.

Foggy, we will all be sending love, positive energy and prayers you way to day, I just know that we are going to hear a positive report today as a result of the sonogram.

Thanks as always, Alex, for the early report, you are the best! Please let Michael know that we admire and care for him. He is a true gentleman and a wonderful trainer.

Janice...as Lynda pointed out this is quite an extreme group, but nevertheless the problem is here as well. I'm not sure if it's as bad as in the US, but it would be interesting to compare statistics and see.

I have a problem with steeplechasing too. It's nice to see these beautiful animals when they fly, but not fall! I prefer show-jumping...don't know, but the horses just seem to be more in control, and sturdier!

Alex, so glad for the ACN report! I can just imagine you "ambushing" Michael Matz, saying, "did I hear you right??? I have a whole site full of Barbaromaniacs who analyze every word I say, so I've got to get it right!" LOL

Lovely poem, Gloria. Prayers for good test results for The Fog today, and some outdoor grazing for our Bobby.

Jo, I think jumpers may be sturdier, at least the ones who are warmbloods. they have thicker legs. I like steeplechasing, but it seems like the races with many horses are very bad. I saw some crazy steeplechase that was in Checkoslavakia (I KNOW I spelled that wrong LOL), I think it was an extreme race or something and it was horrible. Horses falling everywhere, inside ditches, in deep water, etc. The race must have been 6 or 7 miles and I dont hink more than a few horses finished. At least 20 had started. It was just plain stupid in my view.

We just saw that "Glenn Ford passed away." Sorry to see that.

Here in the UAE we do get to see English Horseracing and Equestrian Competitions, but not the horse races in the United States.

Isn't it true that, "You don't realize what you have until you lose it" and "You always want what you can't have."

So, my question is which woud you prefer?

Posted by: Socorro at August 31, 2006 12:39 PM

Socorro, well, we used to have showjumping coverage here quite a bit, and then it was taken away. I used to watch it every weekend inbetween the horse races. Now I have to hope OLN shows a jumping competition mabe twice a year or something and the horse racing coverage, even though it seems to be more of it, it still get preempted. So, I think we are missing what we used to have. I dont think it was ever, " We don't realize what we have until we loose it". We (or at least I) knew what we had and then we lost it.

This report just came in about Bluegrass Cat...
(sorry if it's already been posted)

Bluegrass Cat finds home at stud farm
Despite broken leg, horse arrives safely in Kentucky

His racing career over, Bluegrass Cat began phase two of life Tuesday when he arrived at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky.

Bluegrass Cat, who broke his right hind leg when finishing second in the Travers Stakes here on Saturday, arrived at WinStar Tuesday.

"He arrived safely there," trainer Todd Pletcher said at his barn at the Oklahoma Training Track Wednesday. "We loaded him on the van here and he was capable of walking on by himself. It went as good as we could have hoped for."

Bluegrass Cat vanned to Albany where he boarded a plane and flew to Lexington. Pletcher said he is not sure what will happen now but he said WinStar, which owns the colt, was leaning toward not performing surgery on the leg.

Bluegrass Cat will begin his stud career at WinStar next season.

    QUESTION:

Will Bluegrass Cat be alright without the surgery?

If he goes to stud, will he be okay without the surgery?

Hopefully he will not be shipped out of the United States.

Hopefully, the owner of BGC is making his decision in the best interest of BGC and not because of money issues.

hank you Jo (UK) for sharing that information.

I know it seems strange not to do surgery on BC, but we have a retired race horse at our barn who had the same injury when she retired. She healed up on her own with no surgery...Gaits aren't always smooth, but she's a happy, pampered mare! Still pretty spunky, too!

I'll be anxiously awaiting for news on the Fog. My stomach is in my throat. But I am so happy to hear ACN for Barbaro! Positive thoughts, positive thoughts, positive thoughts! As for BGC, same questions as above. It sounded like he has a fairly serious leg injury if they were concerned about him walking out on his own. Will not treating this injury create permanent lameness?

Good morning Barbaro and fellow Barbaromaniacs. So glad to hear ACN once again. I am really enjoying the articles about the strong 3 year olds we have. Most of them have been written well and speak highly of our Bobby. Of course, like DebG, I have my own opinions. I had to watch Barbaro's Kentucky Derby again after reading the articles and it's just SOOOO impressive. If you haven't watched it in a while, you must do so.

Good luck today LITF. We are all here for you.

As for Alex's comment yesterday regarding roving reporting, my son offered to drag me around in his farrier truck...but I don't think an "in depth look at horses hooves" is exactly what he had in mind.

Just got this report through. Don't know if anybody else has seen it...it's a new one for me.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro feasts on fresh handpicked grass everyday while he recovers at Penn’s large animal hospital, but whether the recuperation time will lead to a full recovery remains unclear.

Barbaro — a colt who fractured his leg severely during the Preakness in May — has been kept under close watch by animal surgeon Dean Richardson, who performed the surgery immediately after Barbaro’s injury.

According to the latest update, Barbaro remains in stable condition after a summer of physical ups and downs at the New Bolton Center, located outside of Philadelphia. He had the cast on his hind leg changed Sunday.

“He has made improvements in certain areas, but there are still other issues with this recovery,” said Penn School of Veterinary Medicine spokeswoman Gail Luciani.

These “other issues” do indicate the end of his career, however, owner and Penn grad Roy Jackson said.

“He seems to be all right, healing slowly, but he will never race again,” he said.

Both Roy and his wife Gretchen visit Barbaro every day to check up on his condition and supply him with only the best in hay and grass.

Since Barbaro was admitted to New Bolton Center, he has garnered much national exposure and publicity. Richardson appeared on The Early Show and Good Morning America to discuss Barbaro’s status. In addition, an anonymous donation established the Barbaro Fund, which raises money to support the New Bolton Center’s needs.

Barbaro’s condition will likely remain unpredictable.

“Nobody knows how he’s going to turn out,” Jackson said. “We wait day to day.”

Barbaro, you gorgeous guy, so glad to read those three little letters "A C N" this morning. Now I can breathe much easier and begin to look forward to my day. Hang in there, Champ, we're always with you.

    HERE IS A GREAT STORY!!!!!

(an e-mail I received and very appropriate for this site!I Love it and hope you all do too!!!)

Just up the road from my friend's home is a field with two horses in it. From a distance, each looks like every other horse. But if a person stops and watches the horses, he or she will notice something quite amazing. One horse is blind. His human caregiver has chosen NOT to have him put down, but has made a good home for him.
Listening, one will hear the sound of a bell that comes from the smaller horse in the field. A small bell is attached to her bridle. It lets her blind friend know where she is, so he can follow her. Upon observation, one sees how she is always checking on him, and that he will listen for her bell and then slowly walk to where she is,trusting that she will not lead him astray.

Like the human caregivers of these two horses, GOD does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need.Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by God and those whom he places in our lives. At other times, we are the guide horse, helping others see God.

Good friends are like stars. You don't always see them, but you know they are always there.

Tim Woolley Racing website is a blessing for all of us!! Thank You Alex!!

I know the Smarty one sold for a few thousand, I wonder what a Barbaro one would go for?
They show more talent painting with their hooves, noses and tails than a lot of "art" I have seen at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

It may be while before they're up to KF speed, but then they don't have the incredibly appreciative NBC staff waiting at the door with eager anticipation!

KF - congratulations on your ever expanding roles at NBC... you deserve it. Thank you for setting such a terrific example of service above and beyond, all heart. Love you all.

Off to the coal mines...he he. At least it may help keep my mind off. Not that it already isn't.

Thanks be to God for another good night for the Champ. And thanks to all the good people at NBC, especially team Richardson.

Saying prayers today for Lost in the Fog. Prayerfully, we will get good news about him. It is my understanding that if the tumors have not grown, they might attempt surgery (not today...). According to Bloodhorse, there is one tumor that is inoperable, irrespective of the results of today's scan. Anyway, The Fog is in God's hands, as he has been all along.

Love all of you and hope you have a blessed day.

Sarah and Mary...I see that Michele has already posted the link which is good because I think I deleted it after I read it!

I know it's not as upbeat as we're used to, and it's not meant to panic us, but for starters, until the cast comes off his right leg we don't know if he's going to walk on it, and secondly, he needs to regrow that left hoof.

This is stuff we already knew, and it's why we're all here watching him like hawks!

ok, the article Jo posted that sounds weird to some of us:

It's U of Penn student newspaper, and it sounds like they have pieced together tidbits from various stages of Barbaro's recovery. They report that "he'll never race again" as if that's something new.

Good morning Barbaro! ACN - music to my ears. Hopefully you'll be able to get out and munch some nice fresh green grass the recent rain has produced.

Praying for good today news for LITF.

There's a great new article at Bloodhorse.com regarding the first day at Woodbine over the brand new polytrack track!

    http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35106

A quote from the article - a tribute to Barbaro:

"From the moment I heard about (Polytrack) and what it did as far as reduction of injuries to horses, I was determined that we had to do it," said David Willmot, president and chief executive officer of Woodbine Entertainment.
"For someone like me who has had two Horses of the Year destroyed on the racetrack, we owe the horses this. We also owe the public who have had to watch Barbaro."

Barbaro will go down in history as a major contributor in saving many horses' lives in the future. THAT'S what his real legacy will be.

    I love you, big fella!

What is the big deal with the article?????????

Barbaro is healing but is by NO means out of the woods. Alex calmly reminded us of this when he addressed why he used "OK" when describing Barbaro's night a few back.

Family, we are witnessing a miracle here plain and simply. Hence, every day when I hear Bobby had ACN, I rejoice and thank God.

Remember, "little drops of rain make the mighty ocean". This is how we must view each day of Bobby's progress. By Christmas, if by the graze of God, he is still having ACN, then we can firmly begin to believe he has made it.

    Good Morning, Everyone,

So glad to see ACN. Barbaro, you are such a good boy. You must know how loved you are, and have figured out how to comply with THIS particular "training"program. You are a remarkably good and wise boy. God is with you.

Sharonlynn: Your sensitivity to the "signs" in Hidalgo really touched a cord in me. A few weeks back, there was some discussion of somehow adding Mustang blood to Thoroughbereds to improve their soundness...for the GOOD of the breed and to the benefit of the horses.

I looked up a lot of information on Mustangs, and about Frank Hopkins, (FrankHopkins.com)... as a result of what someone such as I can tell, the addition of pure Spanish Mustang blood would not compromise the integrity of thoroughbred lineage (they have common ancestry).

I wish some University, or breeder somewhere would be willing to begin the process.

Thanks Judy for posting the article on Woodbine and the new polytrack course. I was watching racing from there last night and only realized then at they had just installed it. Everyone was raving about it. I hadn't realized that Woodbine was only the 2nd racetrack in NA to implement this. I am proud and relieved to have it at my local track! Hopefully this story will make the rounds to the other tracks - it is very positive, and the cost has to outweigh the negatives. It is good for business when racing fans know that their tracks care about the horses, despite the costs. Yes, Barbaro's story will help this cause. Your injury dear boy is not in vain!

I'm just watching the Irish racing at Tralee, and I've just seen a jockey, Hayes, kicking, hand urging and using the whip on Da Pooch, a 3 year old filly, while they were still in the starting gate! The poor horse didn't want to go into the gate to begin with, and she looked so distressed!Surely this isn't allowed! Can anybody tell me?

"Claire Court" is a very heavy , narrow training track in the barn area of the main track as opposed to the Oklahoma Training track at Saratoga.

Its nornally used to re-hab injured horses cause of its deepness and safety. Its a really cool track cause it goes around the barns and under trees.

I saw Funny Cide train over it I believe 2 years ago when he prepped for a stakes race up there against Mineshaft and Evening Attire. The Saratoga Handicap or Saratoga Breeders Cup, or to that effect, Funny Cide Ran 3rd I think.

Sorry you witnessed that. It's hard for us animal lovers that have a great deal of caring in our souls to see these things. I was exposed to a dressage horse once that was rescued from Europe because he had been so mistreated. After a few months, he started to come around and trust people. He ended up doing very well.

Re: FOG. It's a sunny, cool morning here in Saratoga. The morning workouts -- what a wonderful way to start the day -- were a sheer delight. Horses and ponies going about their work with ease. People watching, sipping coffee, chatting about who looks good. The all do.

The 8th race today, THE NEW YORK TURF WRITERS CUP (Grade I) $150,000 Run in Memory of D. M. Smithwick. A hurdle race. Seven horses aged 5-10 will run 2 3/8.

Outside the West entry gates -- you who've been there may remember -- a fountain. Around this fountain, a circle of jockey statues painted with the colors of stables. Like the ones you see on lawns, only different. In the outstretched hands of these jockeys, signs painted with the names of last year's Saratoga Stakes winners.

On the southeast side, lit by the morning sun, the simple sign: LOST IN THE FOG, Kings Bishop Stakes, August 27, 2005. A winner's sign in the circle of winners.

Fog, we wish you a big win, place and show from your test today. As they say, it's a beautiful day to save lives. Good luck, big fella! -- Susan in Saratoga

    Hi Renee,

Not really feisty, just trying to, as they say in the rap community, "Keep it real....." LOL

    ######
Thanks for your concern. I took OtherLyn's words to heart yesterday. When you cannot change a person's mind to love you, then why waste energy and life trying to do so? I went the route of constant gifts and such to no avail. As they say, "Can't buy me love.........."

So I decided yesteday to just forgive and move on. Does it mean the pain is gone? Nope. Havn't slept in 3 days. BUT, it allows me to keep it real. Nothing I can do will change matters so I stopped trying. Eventually I will be fully back to the Jazz Man I am capable of. But, since this exact thing happened TWO times now in my life, the shock and "Shame on Me For being so Stupid..." hurts more than anything.

    Sarah,

This how they sell newspapers and get ratings on TV. Did anyone see the early projections of the hurricane that hit and fizzled in FL? CNN had it tracking right to New Orleans!!! Yep!! They hyped it up to get ratings.

What will make you tune in at eleven?
    1. Hurrican could devastate N.O. one year later!
    or
    2. Weak Storm to do no damage....

The same damn thing Baltimore news did with Bobby early on.

Again, what would make you tune in at 11?

    1. Kentucky Derby winner's chances of living are bleak and he is hour to hour (exact teaser I heard).

    or.

    2. Barbaro had ACN

So I agree the atricle was slanted, but really not telling us something we don't already know.

    Cheers!

    Jazz

Margie...I don't know how some of these of horses can tolerate people being near them when they've been treated so badly.

I can understand the use of the whip when it doesn't hurt or scare a horse (I've heard it's also a steering aid), but since I've known Barbaro and been getting more involved in the racing scene I've seen the whipping rules badly abused, and if this is going to keep happening then the whip needs to be banned...end of story.

I'm really sorry I posted that Bobby article cos it seems to have caused panic in the ranks, and I never meant for that to happen. Ok, it wasn't one of those articles that makes us want to shout YIPPEE, but I didn't see it as negative either...just reality.

Listen to Jazz says...he's keeping it real!!

Alex: Clare Court is a part of the old, 19th century racing grounds...it's tucked away in the woods behind the backstretch, I think.

I have to say that I'm surprised that they're running Funny Cide in the Woodward--he's not been up to a Grade I for a while (the JC Gold Cup a few years ago, I think), and he's been successful at lower levels. Even if they wanted to race him at Saratoga, there had to be easier spots for him, I would think.

    ###### The reason I am posting the following on this site is because I'm not sure a lot of people see the discussion boards. Wild Life Sanctuary has been posted here before and it made people aware, me included.

I had sent an email to Best Friends and received a reply which is posted on the discussion board. However, they were rather vague on how they planned concrete help for the Wild Animal Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary has a new video..they call it the closing video and I want to tell you, the sight of those animals, lying under a tree, or cavorting in a pool, all unaware that their lives will be taken shortly breaks my heart. They have already known abuse, and to be euthanized because there is no money available to help keep them alive is a crime! No ifs, ands or buts about it!.

I'm sending a donation today. If any of you can spare just a few dollars, please DO send it immediately. If they can get enough to keep it operating while they figure out long term plans, it will help each and every animal that is there.

Another caveat to the article that was posted--it came from the U Penn student newspaper. The "student" reporters (who are supposed to be learning on the job) are not always as careful or accurate in their characterizations as "professional" working journalists might be, which may account for the odd tone/composition of the article.

    Susan W :

Thanks for looking up GENUINE RISK's info for me. I know that GENUINE REWARD has never been raced, and that he now stands at stud. But there WAS another foal in 1999, out of CHIEF HONCHO, named COUNT OUR BLESSING.

All I could find is that the foal was training in Maryland with someone named Jimmy Murphy. That is where to trail ends.

Gosh I sure would hate to think that one of the only tow living offspring of GENUINE RISK may have simply disappeared. (I think of FERDINAND and EXCELLER).

LITF, well, today is the day we find out if your tumors have shrunk...my prayers are for another miracle...if Bobby can do it, so can you, my Long Time Sun.

Bobby, am keeping an eye on TS Ernesto - his arrival could put a monkey wrench in some people's weekend plans...am still going to FH Saturday morning rain or shine just for a couple of hours (I'm a morning person and could be there before dawn knowing me)...kind of hope to see some of the deer or foxes that Alex sees. Right now, the sun is peeking out so if you can get outside grazing...nudge whoever's turn it is to lead you out...don't know how long it will last. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Right now, don't know if I'll be able to make it to DC on 9/5 after all...family things have cropped up. Shelley, will keep you posted.

    Repost from this a.m.:

FOB: Did Barbaro ask you about those dobs:
Lawyer Ron, Brother Derek, Showing Up...?

He was practicing his spelling most of yesterday and he may have been too distracted.

Jazz: Maid Marion is pretty good with this "oops it happened again" stuff. If you want her, contact friartuck@robinhoodradio.com

    Fog: Good luck later...

Everybody: Okay, try this for a theory on the OK earlier in the week: Every single day until OK day Doc R saw Barbaro circa 06.00 and passed on the info to Michael Matz & Co. who passed it on to Alex, who was good enough to pass it on to us. What was the one thing different about the OK day? Yes, it was the first day of Doc R's vacation, and the first day in ages that the routine to which we'd become accustomed was varied. That's it. Later that day KF did a site inspection and discovered that all was copacetic at NBC. Dr. Anderson then came back with comfortable. The next day (yesterday) was ACN, but the update was a little later which caused consternation...then Peter Brette's comfortable yesterday afternoon...then Michael telling Alex
"comfortable" at the crack of dawn today.
The article Jo (UK) posted is clearly a rehash of old quotes/info that's been edited together (rather poorly in my view) to make a story. Bottom line: Barbaro is a champ, and he's moving right along. How do you know? We've now had 4 "comfortables" and counting, and no word of Dr. R having cancelled his vacation has made it to our hypervigilant ears.

    Cheers,

    Hi Deb G,
Here it is, it was written by students.

Hypervigilant is right. Just a bunch of overprotective parents hanging on to every word and proud of it. Your right FT this has all been since Dr. Dreamy has been away.

A side note to the polytrack. I read prior to the Del Mar opening this summer that they would have the new track installed for the 2007 meet. The rest of the California tracks are supposed to install also. Good news for the horses and especially at Del Mar who had sooooo many breakdowns this summer.

    Woodbine Debuts New Polytrack Surface
    by Jennifer Morrison
    Date Posted: 8/31/2006 7:21:20 AM
    Last Updated: 8/31/2006 9:03:14 AM

Horses break from the gate in the first race at Woodbine as the track unveiled its synthetic surface Wednesday.
    Photo: Michael Burns
Demi Song bounced his way into Canadian Thoroughbred record books at Woodbine Aug. 30 when the gelding won the first race over the track's new Polytrack surface.
Woodbine is only the second track in North America to hold a race meeting on the wax-coated sand, fiber and recycled material surface. It offers a high and even absorption rate and a much safer and softer surface for racehorses.

Certainly Demi Song, ridden by longtime Woodbine jockey Emile Ramsammy loved the spring to his step, winning by 10 3/4 over his five rivals.

It took just seven weeks to install and replace the old Woodbine main track with Polytrack while racing continued over the inner harness track.

After five training days and the six races run over the surface last evening, it is virtually unanimous that it was worth the wait.

"Woodbine Entertainment has made a great move," said Ramsammy. "You can definitely feel the difference (riding the horses). When there are horses around you, you don't even hear them, you don't even know they are there.

"That will help front running horses not be too aggressive and horses who need to be aggressive not worry about the clickety-clack (of hooves) behind them."

Polytrack, which cost Woodbine $10 million to install, is an invention born in England by Martin Collins, who addressed eager Woodbine horsemen earlier this week to answer questions about the surface.

While Polytrack did yield some kickback to trailing horses, a problem that affected Turfway this winter, riders equated it to feeling like "snow" and not the painful dirt that hit horses and jockeys in the face on the old track.

"I don't think there will be any bias to the track,' said Ramsammy. "I think the track is very fair. There is a little bit of kickback but nothing compared to the original dirt track which stung and hurt."

"It revolutionizes horse racing," said trainer Vince Tesoro. "This is a genius move by Woodbine. They have done it for the horses and in turn, the horsemen and the fans. Everyone is in awe of the surface."

Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., is the only other track on the continent to have a race meeting on Polytrack.

Thanks Renee (& Joe)! Seems like old info. I think I'll just stick to the positive ACN and as Friar noted: Dr. R has NOT cancelled his vacation, which means ALL IS WELL!!!

Dang, I watched the UK horse racing video - made me completely cringe. Those poor horses, not to mention riders. It seems as though the riders almost expect it and literally KNOW how to jump off. It is obvious that once the horses tire, they can no longer fully jump those fences. Should be banned....

Woodbine has been working on this all summer, even at the cost of lost revenue. I am very pleased with my Canadian counterparts for setting a new standard up here. My local track also has plans to convert. YAY!

Yay! I found GENUINE RISK's second living baby. He lives at the same farm that his famous mom does, and he looks just like her. I wish the photo was Barbara Livingston quality, but, I'll take the image as peace to my heart anyway. He can bee seen here: > Photos of Liz Tobey of Thoroughbred Champions, on MSM Search.

He does not look in the most robust of health, nor does he look happy. I am hoping the picts were just taken on an "off" day.

RE: "OK"--don't sweat that, either! It was two or three days ago. It is NOT a distress call. We all have "ok" days but that doesn't mean our conditions are deteriorating or that the Grim Reaper is on our doorsteps. Six weeks ago we would have rejoiced to hear Bobby had an "Ok" day.

"Ok" was TWO or three days ago. He's back to "comfortable". ENJOY, and keep the good thoughts coming!

Hope all are well and happy this beautiful last day of August

Thanks to Alex for the great early morning update and verfication of that update :) You are the best...I would certainly vote for you if you were to run for President, but as a UK transplant, we'd have to rewrite the rule book in order to get you nominated. If you will accept, I'll get started on the campaign! Otherwise, we'll appoint you President of BarbaroWorld, okay?

Prayers for Foggy today. I have such a beautiful vision of a little colt emerging from a fog-cloaked meadow..as though that is a foretelling of his emergence from this crisis. Be strong, Gorgeous Fog. We love you.

Prayers continue for Mike and everyone else who needs them. Barbaro, you have my heart. Have a happy, healing day, Sweet Boy!

Yes I'm in the Palm Springs area. A mere 108 today.
I was walking down my hall this morning and took notice of 2 lithos I inherited from my father by Fred Stone. One is of Seattle Slew winning the Derby. The other of Exceller with Shoemaker up. It hit me who this horse was and the terrible end he had.
HR 503 should definitely be named the Exceller Bill (of horses rights).

HI everyone. Lots of stuff going on today...looks like everyone is hangin' in there.

So I have question in light of Alex's update about Funny Cide and a possible scratch. I would love input from any of the mirad of owners, trainers, and players here.

This weekend is the final weekend of live racing here in Minnesota. Laurie H and I were hoping to finally be able to meet each other on Sunday (Fan Appreciation Day) at Canterbury Park.
It's been a beautiful summer here but now, as luck would have it, Ernesto is locking up all the weather systems and its supposed to rain all weekend here.

I love the races, but I am a fair weather participant only. Can we have your input as to how much SLOPPY conditions actaully affect the safety of the race? Do these condtions make it worse, better, the same????

Barclay Tagg seems to be indicating that Sloppy conditions are unsafe and he would scratch for that reason.

Laurie and I were hoping to meet and have a fun time at the track and send you some pictures from our little cyber family gathering. But neither one of us wants to be there if its too nerve wracking. I know that things can happen under the best of circumstances too.

I would like to know from you guys if this fear of sloppy tracks is unfounded or not.

I love knowing the horses' names. I wish we could know the history of why the name was picked. That isn't public knowledge somewhere is it? Like is there a National registry we have access to.

I know that Barbaro's name was from a picture in the Jackson's home that was owned by one of the parents. Which I love becomes that tells me that the Jackson's are traditional and family-oriented.

Has any one heard Barbaro's brother name yet. I believe I heard they have six months to pick and that it may come from the same picture I mentioned above.

Although I teach high school journalism and not college journalism, I would have to say that this UPenn newspaper article is an assignment to someone. The journalist got the quotes correct, but I don't think this article is one to get upset over.

I certainly would stick with what Alex says, much more current and in the know.

After all, how accurate can it be with no mention of Alex and Tim and the Barbaromaniacs.

Let's give the student reporter a break. He/she probably didn't know who Barbaro was before this journalistic assignment.

while I love the idea of Barbaro and Fog t-shirts, no, I have not done anything about it. I'm unwilling to use what I see as an inferior product (re: the do it yourself iron ons), as I've tried that with less than satisfactory results.

At some point, hopefully within a couple of months, I'll have various horse prints available. I'm just not 'set up' for it yet. When I reach that point, perhaps I can offer a quality t-shirt or some other wearable art, too. I'll look into what that would entail.

Don't worry about the slop. There is a cushion under there and a good trainer will know if his horse can handle it. Some horse simply don't like to run in it because, if not a front runner, they get all kinds of mud thrown up in their face. So do the jocks , but they get to wear three pairs of goggles.
Some horses absolutely love it!! Mudders.

Lisa M., you echoed my prayer for LITF. I'm praying those tumors are gone. or are shrunk to almost nothing. He's such a beautiful horse, and so young to have this happen to him. Praying all day today for the best of news from California.

Susan W., I agree with you about Funny Cide. I still get upset about him losing the Triple Crown as he is one of my favorite all -time horses!! The Funny Cide book was really good reading, too. As to why he might not race if the track is messy, the day of the Belmont the track was really messy and I think Funny Cide DOES NOT LIKE to run in the muck!! I don't think it would necessarily be unsafe for him to race. Could be wrong, though as I'm down here in Alabama and not too many people even know what horse racing is!! It's all about football and NASCAR.

OK, I have noticed some potential issues arising from some of the comments over the last couple of days.

Some people are frustrated that the noise to signal level has deteriorated and there is too much "chat" and not enough interesting content (responses to the updates, links to news articles, other relevant anecdotes, reports from Kennett Florist, reports from visiting the races etc). When they note their frustration publicly (i.e. here) there are sometimes remarks made that can only be perceived as being a little offensive (this is my interpretation anyway).

I understand it is not possible to eliminate chat completely, and actually there is advantage from having some of the chat here ... nevertheless I would ask to try to limit stuff and consider the other forum and chat we have as media you can use.

it is REALLY important that posts that should be skimmed, or disregarded by the majority, should begin with the symbols: ############ If this truly becomes a standard then those not involved with the chatter can scroll down without thinking about reading the content of the comment (this is what I currently do with those posts).

I do think we have built a great giving community here together (I am excited to learn the final tally for the Barbaro Fund in honour of Dr. Richardson etc.), I really hope we can continue with your good work, but despite all the good, if these comments end up in a "fight" it will be a lot easier for me to remove them entirely (click of a button actually).

    Thanks for helping.

    Yes, Linda Lee..."HSI" is good.

I don't know why but it is extremely interesting, and important to me to findout what ever became of them....and to know that they are/or/have lived out a full and happy life. This is the HSI quest. AND, of course, to promote BARBARO's causes, while visiting with all of you wonderful folks.

My prayers go to Barbaro and LITF today - hope we get a good report - waiting with baited breath that's for sure. Wish they'd have told us an approximate time of the test ;)

    #####
Mirth (I think - someone else has a similar name to yours - I remember you are a future vet tech though ;) ) that's great that you sponsored a horse, I'm excited for you! I know it's been posted previously but if you can (or anyone) let me know how I can do that I'd really appreciate it. I'm doing some extra work for my aunt and rather than just spend it I'm going to save the money and put it towards that.

    #####
Had one other idea I wanted to throw out there - I mentioned this yesterday but not sure if anyone noticed - sorry for the repeat.

I was thinking it may be a good idea to post the many links/news/pictures/sites people find and post them all on one website, or I guess even a thread in the forum now that I think about it, which would help everyone to be able to find the info if they can't look at it when they first read the post on the board and have to look through archived posts to find it.

Sorry if this is already being done somewhere, I don't always get to the forum so I'm not sure all that is/isn't there. Any input would be appreciated. I'd be willing to get a webpage created that would do this, if everyone thinks it'd be a good idea. If not, I won't be offended in the least, just at thought I had! :)

Now, Barbaro and LITF you guys heal today and Fog hoping and praying you get a great report today after your tests.

    ####
Also, about the Wild Animal Sanctuary - where is it and where can donations be sent? Sorry if it was posted already I have had to try to do some work today as past few days I've done hardly anything at work! ;) However, I'm tryin to keep up ;)

When I came in your main home page looks like its being worked on...it just has a bunch of hyperlinks.

You asked the other day if anyone was having issues with how things looked. So there you have it.

    Alex, y'all,
the 'find' function is quite useful for cruising past what you don't want to read to get to what you DO, as well- if a person prefers to read only about Barbaro or only about Fog, or whatever, at that moment.

if you don't know how to use this, in your browser, up at the top, go to EDIT-select-FIND (or FIND IN THIS PAGE) and this will pull up a box. Type in the name or subject you wish to go straight to and voila!
    there you are.

    uh oh...Sorry, Alex, I'm a laugher, not a fighter!!

Leslie, LMAO, don't look to me for wagering. I don't bet, here's a reason why.
Belmont Stakes, Lemon Drop Kid. Husband says, I like that name, I think I will go online and bet 500 on him. The "expert" here just laughed and said 80-1...LOL. He tried to place the bet, but stopped because registration was a pain, and gee, guess who won the Belmont.
    Lemon Drop Kid.
I really hope Ernesto stays away and Funny Cide can run. I am really interested in seeing his progression, and I think this could be a decisive race for him. Not that he would be retired, like I said, being a gelding, he doesn't him much else to do, but if he does poorly in the Woodward AND the Hawthorne, I can see a dropdown.
I hope he does well. I always loved him and Sackatoga Stables.

Jo, I don't know if current races need this ## sign but I will put it just incase. I saw La Coruna :) Mike C, I was watching as well and I hope for the best.

I am waiting on Race 6 at Saratoga, We have Michael Matz's Rasta Farian, with Javier Castellano up, There is also Barclay Tagg's, Miracle Moment, with Cornelio H. Velasquez and there is even Todd Pletcher's, Somethinaboutbetty with John R. Velazquez.

Also awesome about this race is, Edgar Prado ( did I mention how much I admire this man?) on Mark Shuman's, Mambo With G, cool name huh? And last but not least, the 18yr old wonder (Jazils history maker ) Fernando Jara on William Mott's, Crystal Current.

Someone asked before if people were more excited about racing? It has been coming back to me slowly since Barbaro. And I have to say, Race 6 at Saratoga is going to be exciting for me. So yes I am excited about racing.

Welcome home, Bluegrass Cat. As Dynaformer said to Bobby, "If you thought racing was fun, wait till you try retirement!" (wink wink nudge nudge).

Also just found this nice article on ESPN.com about Brother Derek. Dan Hendricks, his trainer, has some great comments about our boy, Barbaro.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=2565632

"I think that was the best race he's (Brother Derek) ever run," Hendricks said. "He had a compromised trip. He could easily have been second with a little luck. But that's what makes the Derby special. That's what makes Barbaro special. He made his own luck, ran fast, and won easily."

Haven't checked the updates for hours; assume all is status quo and we are still waiting for LITF news - hoping for JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE, please, thank you very much! Grateful as we are, we need JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE . . .

    ############## - or not? Beats me . . .

Great Horse Songs (That I Did Not Write)

The Horse As "Deus Ex Machina" (example - The Barbaro Effect)

THE BLUE-TAIL FLY (a/k/a Jimmy Crack Corn) - everybody knows the tune (recorded/popularized [in my generation] by Burl Ives, Pete Seeger, Leadbelly, and others.) Reputed to have been Abe Lincoln's favorite song.

    refrain: (after every verse)

Jimmy crack corn an' I don't care,
Jimmy crack corn an' I don't care,
Jimmy crack corn an' I don't care,
My Massa’s gone away. (anybody don't know the tune?)

When I was young I used to wait
On Massa 'n bring him his plate,
And pass the bottle when he got dry,
And brush away the blue tail fly.

When he would ride in the afternoon,
I'd follow along with the hickory broom,
    The pony being rather shy,
When bitten by the blue tail fly.

One day he ride around the farm,
The flies so numerous they did swarm,
    One chanced to bite him on the thigh;
The devil take the blue tail fly!

The pony run, he jump, he pitch,
    He threw my Massa in the ditch;
He died and the jury wondered why -
The verdict was the blue tail fly.

They buried him under the 'simmon tree,
His epitaph is there to see:
"Beneath this stone I'm forced to lie,
The victim of the blue tail fly."

    REFRAIN ONE LAST TIME

This is a great example of a folk story with an equine as deus ex machina - eh wot? ("My Kingdom for a horse ...") I may be misusing the literary device term, but it sure works for me. Meaning the fortuitous thing, person, event, whatever, that makes things happen, often resolving the plot, that sometimes seems to have come literally from out of the blue (as per its literal stage origin definition).

I AM DEFINITELY ADDING THIS TO MY HORSE SONGS repertoire. In a class by itself, not like Tennessee Stud or Stewball or Oh That Strawberry Roan, great songs all, but about the horses themselves. Blue Tail Fly = HORSE AS DEUS EX MACHINA; which is what's happening with the Barbaro Effect. LITERALLY, haha. Which is why I was not sure whether to ######### this part.

KEEP CALLING YOUR REPS about HR 503, please go to the TWF (which I STILL can't get to - my 'puter maven guy is coming tomorrow) and find out what you can do. This is very serious, the AAEP opposition to the Bill is scary. Not a slam dunk by a long shot. DO IT FOR BARBARO.

######### Anxiously awaiting my "Barbaro with his nose in the roses" tee-shirt from Ernie, convinoballet.org, and pls remember you can get yours and make a contribution to Miracle Horse Rescue at the same time (SUCH A DEAL!) Don't forget to vote for Stephanie Pierce (Nevada) at the volvoforlifeawards.com site, to help General and the other TB's living out their lives at MHR, as pictured for us by Faye who's lucky enough to be hands-on with them. RENEE-

A HOT WALKER is almost exactly what it says, it a person who walks a horse after a race while he's still"hot"..they kind walk the horse till he cools out and can be washed and cared for post race..

Posted by: mike c at August 31, 2006 7:18 PM

    ####

    Renee...
A hot walker is used to cool horses down after a workout. Hard to explain, but it is a machine with long arms with lead lines attached. You clip the horse via it's halter to the lead line and the machine walks them around in a circle. Lazy way for us humans to cool our horses down!

Posted by: Lynn in Austin, Texas at August 31, 2006 7:19 PM

Renee Antaya: A hot walker is a stable hand who leads a horse around in the cooling out process following a race or a workout. Walking hots is usually the first job given a novice stable employee then you can go to a groom, assistant trainer, trainer, etc...

As we await news on The Fog, I thought some might enjoy reading the article on bloodhorse.com about Woodbine debuting its new Polytrack surface. CEO of Woodbine says "we owe it to the horses", himself having to have two horses he own euthanized on a racetrack from injuries.

HRTV was comparing all sorts of statistics with respect to this new track vs. dirt. Guess what???

It's fair and unbiased. Now there are NO excuses.

Have a restful evening tonight, munch on some good treats, and as you go to sleep count the goats going over head. May the angels hold you tight and keep you safe and healthy.I love you Barbaro!
God Bless you and keep you,
    Renee

I will check in later for news about Foggy. Take Care Barbaro Buddies. Great Day.

    Her response..."Oh wow...that is incredible"!!!
She also said they have been getting alot of calls about Foggy today...ahhhhhh!

To all interested in the anti - slaughterhouse legislation and I believe that is most of you. I received a long email from Rep. Dave Weldon of Florida. It was rambling about the overpopulation of wild horse and the drain on the economy, blah, blah, blah. I got the clear impression that he does not support the ban of slaughterhouses. (He never actually said "yes" or "no"). I want to make those of you traveling to Washington aware of this as I suspect you probably want to visit those opposed to the ban rather than "preach to the choir". I emailed back that I was going to tell every horse person I know about his position and do everything I can to see that he does NOT get re-elected. Needless to say, I am very upset about this.

    TO MY DEAREST ANNOINTED ONE:

So happy that you are continuing to be "OK" every day ... "OK" to me means that you're great in 'manspeak' ...

Last Night I 'vigiled' for one full hour between 7 and 8 PM ... lighting so many virtual candles at gratefulness.org for Bobby and Foggy ... I played inspirational music by my favorite singer/songwriter, Neil Diamond. I smiled and I cried and I prayed and thanked God for healing both of you.

I haven't posted for a day or so, but I've been reading all of the posts here.

BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY GREETINGS TO DR. RICHARDSON YESTERDAY ... THE GREATEST MIRACLE WORKER SINCE ANNIE SULLIVAN WITH HELEN KELLER. 'NUFF SAID!

BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY GREETINGS TO JEANETTE C. ... Hope it was happy and "Barbarolicious!!"

THANKS TO SHERRY FOR HER KIND REMARKS A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO ABOUT MY 'CHEERLEADER' POST ... I ONLY HOPE THAT I CAN DO AS GOOD A JOB AS THE 'REAL' CHEERLEADERS DO FOR OUR BOBBY!

WELCOME TO ALL THE NEW POSTERS HERE ... I LOVE NEW INPUT AND PERSPECTIVES ... THE FAMILY IS GROWING FOR OUR DEAREST BOBBY ... HALLELUJAH!!

I have read almost all of the articles about Bobby, Foggy, Bernadini, 'Cat ... etc. What can I say ... They all deserve our respect, our merit, and our recognition. But in my heart it will always be "Big Red" and "Bobby" for me ... nothing will ever take that away from me.

Obviously, I survived that nasty male intruder named "Ernesto", and I'm happy to read here that all other Floridians also made it through. Now I hope for the same for the Carolinas and other 'threatened' areas in his path. May you all be safe and warm and dry from the gathering storm.

And again, continued thanks to Tim and Alex for this "Barbaro Nation Home" ... a place for comfort, dialogue and, most of all, love!!

OK, I think I'm caught up for now and just waiting for more 'news' on Foggy's tests ...

    Ryan,

Sorry to be so late responding. I've been out most of the day, just catching up on posts.

I'm not the vet tech, but I am sponsoring a beautiful bay gelding named Cool Storm who lives in WillKill NY. I found him through the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, mentioned on this site, of course. Their homepage is http://www.trfinc.org/index.php and you can read there about retired Thoroughbreds available for adoption or sponsoring. These horses are not winners, they're just lovely racehorses who could easily have ended up in slaughterhouses had they not been rescued by these wonderful organizations.

I'm going to meet Cool Storm in 10 days, and I can hardly wait! There's a photo of him, and his very sad story (before he was rescued) at http://www.trfinc.org/sponsor/avail.php?id=3

Thanks so much for asking about TRF.

I can see why you're angered. His solution is to kill these beautiful creatures. Does he know **wild** horses aren't the only ones who meet that horrible fate? Ignorant. I know this sounds crazy -I know nothing about wild horses. But could there be a massive program to geld stallions, in an effort to control the populations? It would be an enormous undertaking I imagine, but overpop. is a serious problem in the animal world, with other bad ends beside slaughtehouses. It's the only other solution I can think of.. Is it ridiculous and impossible?

    Hi, Christine:

The way I understand the wild horse situation is that it is not so much that the population is out of control,it is that the grazing land is disappearing. Because of all the land development going on, land where they used to graze are now homes, malls, etc...It is such a shame...

Posted by: Sue W. at August 31, 2006 11:50 PM

Bobby is so blessed to have special people that love him so. I hope he and Michael enjoy their time together.

Speaking of special people, I think The Fog also has a very specisl person in Mr. Gilchrist. If you look at Barbara Livingston's album of LIFT, you can just see the love Gilchrist has for him in all the photos of them together. I am praying very hard that tomorrow's announcement about the tummors will be good.

    RE: Wild horse land situation

..habitat loss is part of it. I am also given to understand that these lands are managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Dept. of the Interior, and cattle and sheep ranchers, and some mining and logging companies, lease grazing, mining, and timber rights on Bureau lands. Usually these leases are for pretty cheap prices, especially the grazing rights. Sometimes wild horses and burros are just in the way of these business interests. Guess who loses.

    >>The way I understand the wild horse situation is that it is not so much that the population is out of control,it is that the grazing land is disappearing. Because of all the land development going on, land where they used to graze are now homes, malls, etc...It is such a shame...

Ah! Sure thing. I go to FLA every few months and you can see the overdevelopment in Palm Beach/Broward. It IS a shame.

    Hey Buddy Barbaro,

Hope you had a "happy healing" day. You are in my thoughts constantly, and I pray every day that our Heavenly Father will bless you with his healing power, to restore you to your natural perfection. You are my Magnificent Champion!

Now it's time to say your prayers:

Now I lay me down to rest,
With thoughts of all who think "I'M BEST"
When I awake and find you here,
So happy knowing that you all are near,
    Carrots, apples and spearmint, too,
Sent with love from all of you,
I feel your love and best wishes each night,
Just want you to know, I'm winning this fight,
Heavenly Father, bless all who care,
For all your creatures, through daily prayer. Amen

Rest well, big guy! We'll be here for you, every step of the way.

    Blessings to all,

Susan E. Regarding wild horses amd BLM, right you are!! The wild horses are out with no place to go after everyone else gets their rights to the Bureau land...the business interests always come out on top, you are so right, excellent point!

The BLM are the ones who round up the wild mustangs and offer them for sale. Some find nice homes, others, unfortunately, fall into the wrong hands..We have adopted several wild mustangs at out barn..They are so smart, very healthy and sound..Just need to have a good trainer to get them gentled, because they are wild indeed!!

To kathi - thanks so much for the local phone number for Dave Weldon. I will pass it around to everyone I know.

To Dale - You're right on - I did read that the USDA has definitely been on the wrong side of this.

To Christine - I don't know if that solution is feasible or not, but do think it should be investigated as a possibility.

To Sue and SusanE - land for grazing - I believe you're right about that issue.

    ################
To Christine - I think Much of Florida is becoming overdeveloped. South Florida is probably the worst, but guess what's happening - many S. Floridians are all moving up the coast. I'm in central/east coast Florida. I have 2 new neighbors - next door and across the street - both moved up from S. Florida.

Do you also do the updates on Tim's horses from the button on the right of the Update screen? I check them from time to time but notice that the races mentioned for the future are now in the past. You probably update at the top of the page but sometimes I miss those. I didn't type the #### since you said you skip those messages. Is there a way you prefer we ask you a question, i.e., the Message Board? Love, love, love this site but my "to do" list grows by leaps and bounds: call my representative, write a letter, send donation to..., etc. All such worthwhile causes that I otherwise would have no idea about. Well, I'm not trying to add to your "to do" list...just wondering. Thanks.

Michael Matz is obviously so dedicated to Barbaro, and I am so thankful there are kind, compassionate, generous people such as Mr. Matz in this world. I have no doubt his visits with Barbaro are as tremendously healing for him as they are for Bobby. Thank you Mr. Matz for your love of this animal so many of us have come to think of as our own. Your kind heart and giving nature will be rewarded, many times over, of this I am absolutely sure. You're one in a million, and Barbaro is very fortunate to have you in his life.

Barbaro, I hope you have another comfortable night. Dream sweet dreams, and get lots and lots of healing rest. You are such a joy and I am so very proud of you and how hard you have fought to get well. You are a champion through and through and I will always, always love you! Good night sweetie pie. Hi All -- missed the update on Jennys on Radio, sounds good? So glad, thanks Alex.

XXXXX Now for a sweet scene at Saratoga today. A grey pony named Sonny was trackside entertaining a group of small children this afternoon. With a mouth as soft as silk he politely took mint after mint from their small hands (some just toddling, held up by parents) He was a rock star with the kids. Kind, patient, and big, showing the best of horse to future American voters, maybe even a congressman in the group.(had to say it!) Parents were in awe of him and how he held the kids in his kind spell.

One dad said they'd brought baby carrots a day ago and Sonny looked at them with disdain, wanting the mints. (We know somebody who's not so fussy!) So ends a good day at Saratoga, night to all -- Susan in Saratoga

I found an interesting video on the derby website that shows what I believe is Barbaro’s arrival for the race. (If you click on the word video right below the picture box, then it shows toggle arrows of the various Barbaro races, however, this one is dated 04272006 and should just start playing.) It has similarities to the grazing video w/Dr. R from CBS news. Our boy looks magnificent and when he heads toward his stall decides he wants to go back out and tries to drag his human with him (at the very end of the video)!! There is no sound to the video and that is actually quite soothing after my daily dose of watching the Derby replay:

“Barbaro in the clear, poised as they move into the far turn
And here comes Barbaro, the undefeated Barbaro, comes up on the outside
And he takes the lead as the field turns for home
In the Kentucky Derby, Barbaro turns it on!!”

We're all praying for a full recovery for you, so we can watch your babies run in the Derby in the future.

I hope you get to walk outside a little bit this weekend and I think Dr. R will be back to see you on Tuesday. I bet you missed him this week, haven't you?

    #####
Again, the talent on this board continues to amaze me. Great artists, poets, speakers, and overall just plain great people.

I don't post much, but every day I'm in awe at what we can do when we join together.

Leslie and Laurie in MN: I hope the weather holds and you are able to go to Canterbury this weekend. I would love to meet you both, but I'm actually looking for a house with some acreage again this weekend. Maybe next year, I'll have a couple of horses of my own. You'll both be welcome to visit and help out.

Barbaro: Praying for you again tonight and waiting for word of ACN. If you behave, maybe we'll send you some stud muffins next week! May need to check with KF to see how your stash is doing.

LITF: Praying for you as well. Shrink Tumors Shrink. Keep the faith, you are going to be our second miracle.

Alex: from the bottom of all of our hearts, thank you for everything you do.

    Good night all.

    Story of interest--one lucky horse!

Posted on Thu, Aug. 31, 2006

RADCLIFF, Ky. - Radcliff Fire Chief Rick Ledford has performed plenty of rescues during his years on the job, everything from pulling children out of bannisters to people out of holes.

But nothing prepared Ledford for what he saw when he arrived at Charlie Ray's property on Wednesday.

Down in a 28-foot-deep cave stood Ruby, a 1,200-pound Belgian workhorse. The horse had apparently fallen into the cave while grazing. The ground around the cave entrance had streaks from where the horse tried to keep itself from falling in.

Ruby was shaken, but not in any real danger. Still, it took a team of rescuers nearly four hours to pull her to safety. A veterinarian gave her a muscle relaxer and then an anesthetic that left her unconscious for 30 minutes while rescuers used a crane to lift her to safety.

Once out of the cave, Ruby wobbled a little as well-wishers patted her muddy coat.

"She looks pretty good," Ray said. "It's been some kind of day."

Other than a few scrapes and a small amount of blood on her legs and her muzzle, the horse appeared to be fine.

"She's pretty much unscathed," said veterinarian Chad Bailey. "Second to Barbaro, she's the luckiest horse in the country."

    #######Kathy A. from Toledo,

Yes! God Bless the folks at Woodbine track for installing the new poly track and doing it for the horses! They are already receiving rave reviews.

You asked about goats, I know this has been said but simply put some horses like to have a companion, often times a creature smaller than them, a pony, a goat, etc. My dog is in love with a little pony and gets her to play with him. So, for lack of a better word these creatures are like a playmate or best buddy.

    Bless all the Beasts!

Barbaro and LTF are leading the way in new research for diseases most often fatal to equines. Both have sacrificed their careers yet have touched so many lives and opened the hearts, minds, and yes, pockets of many.Bernadini may be a great horse but he did not win the Kentucky Derby..the most coveted win of all among owners and breeders. Barbaro is right up there with Seabiscuit and Secretariat. Thank-you Barbaromaniacs, we need each other, and the whole world needs a little of what Barbaro has in their lives. Good night all.

Barbaro Family...I am amazed every day to see folks post on here that have never posted before or that don't post often...they love the prayers, the links, the silliness and the love we have for each other and all the animals.

This is a true gift we have received from above.
I just love all that post here...We truly have a bond for our boys.

I absolutely love Barbaro....he has the MAGICAL IT !! It is so indescribable....what is it?....maybe we should all try to describe IT. They say Princess Diana had IT....But Barbaro...he far out does anything I have seen in my lifetime...what is it....I absolutely love him and I mean love in a very sweet, pure way. I pray for him and I see something in him I have never seen in something or someone " with a beating heart". So what is it BarbaroNation? His beauty, heart, courage, innocence...????

He has been given to us for a reason....he is a miracle and a once in a lifetime experience.

Posted by: Lynn in Austin, Texas at September 1, 2006 4:28 AM

    Lindann,

Maybe Big B is a higher evolved creature, a devine messenger in a racing horse's body, an expressive, alive, passionate being that reminds us all of those qualities within ourselves.....

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at September 1, 2006 4:34 AM

Mike C: Couldn't agree with you more. Just when I thought I'd never love another horse [more than/as much as] Secretariat, along came "Barbaro the Magnificent" .... and the rest is history, as they say. My three all-time fave's:

    1) Secretariat
    2) Ruffian
    3) Barbaro

.... and not necessarily in that order as noted above!

    Bonnie MacRaith..

Yes, Barbaro is a higher evolved creature....something so much different and better and indeed a divine messenger....look what he has accomplished....he is a miracle.....

Ahhh.Bonnie and Lindan...Barbaro is indeed an evolved creature..as Peter's friend said before the race
"He is an old soul"...oh how true...he has walked amongst us before...here to teach us all a true lesson.

Posted by: Lynn in Austin, Texas at September 1, 2006 4:58 AM

Rest well tonight, Barbaro. Keep doing the right things. You and the Fog are in my prayers.

Posted by: PJV at September 1, 2006 5:04 AM

    Lynn & Lindann,

It's so nice to know others "get" this about him, thanks!

Does anyone know if there are less racing accidents on turf (grass)? I was looking at a racing site in Australia and they race exclusively on grass, short cut grass.

    ########### Another Old One Gone

News from The Blood Horse - RIP Pirate's Bounty, son of Hoist the Flag

Leading California Sire Pirate's Bounty Dead
    Date Posted: 8/31/2006 1:46:08 PM
    Last Updated: 8/31/2006 1:46:08 PM

Pirate's Bounty, a California leading sire, was euthanized last week at Marty and Pam Wygod's River Edge Farm near Buellton, Calif., because of the infirmities of old age. He was 31.

River Edge pensioned Pirate's Bounty after the 1999 breeding season because of declining fertility. The Wygods bred and raced Pirate's Bounty, a son of Hoist the Flag out of the stakes-winning Stevward mare Bad Seed.

Pirate's Bounty is represented by 63 stakes winners and the earners of $31.9 million. His eight graded winners include grade I winners Pirate's Revenge and Private Persuasion, plus eight-time stakes winner Feverish.

Pirate's Bounty, who stood his entire career at River Edge, twice led the California sires list and was runner-up numerous times. He also topped the state's 2-year-old list.

Pirate's Bounty won the 1979 Millburn Stakes at Meadowlands and placed in two stakes at Aqueduct for trainer Lefty Nickerson. He won four of 15 career starts and earned $95,984. [end of story]

Does anybody know where to find a picture of him? I haven't looked yet.

WHAT A GOOD BOY. A ripe old age, at home among friends. Sad, but still a good end, as ends go, wouldn't you say?

Bonnie - apparently a 31 year old horse is equivalent to a 93 year old human. Here's an interesting article on horse age and related stuff:

    http://www.mitavite.com.au/news_VN_B20.asp

btw John Henry is happily in retirement at the Kentucky Horse Park at age 31. Saw a bit on him on TV not long ago, a visit between him and his old jockey, Chris McCarron.

mike c - so glad you escaped the clutches of Saratoga and made it back here.

Special good wishes and prayers tonight for those who grace our lives with their beauty and courage, their spirit and passion - Barbaro, Lost in the Fog, Jennys on the Radio, Comic Review, Special(?)...

I watched the video link given above of Barbaro arriving at the Kentucky Derby site this spring. How awesome this horse - watching him move, with no sound, is just astounding. Such presence, such poise. He is breathtaking. And beautiful.

I heard today that our most complete companions never have less than four legs.

Fog, may the news be blessed. We need you.
