Barbaro Updates: 61

updates are now here.

Update 574: Peter Brette just called, he had just spoken to Michael. Barbaro remains comfortable. Michael had visited a little earlier this afternoon, and was now on his way back to visit again. It is certainly a great thing Michael lives so close to NBC, and it is obvious how important Bobby is to everyone!

Alie left this comment re: Kennett Florist's visit today (timestamp: 9:07pm):

Hello Team BARBARO
I went to NBC 1:30 today. Steve went up earlier.
All was good. Our boy is going well.
We are so happy for his continued healing.
We are praying for Lost in the Fog.
Also please add a girl named Special to prayer list.
Thank you for lunch today, what a surprise!
You guys are unbelievable.
God Bless, have a wonderful evening.
We Believe
Alie

I also received an e-mail from Kennett Florist that the Barbaromaniacs are in the local Kennett Paper (its not online yet, I hope it will be).

The cartoon caption contest has been "judged" (thanks Sabina Pierce) and you can find the results on the discussion board: Just For Fun Caption Contest Winner!.

Finally: Michael Matz and Barbaro: Horse of a Lifetime.

Update 573: Jeannine Edwards has just spoken with Greg Gilchrist, Lost in the Fog's trainer. She sent me this e-mail:

Just spoke to Greg Gilchrist... Lost In The Fog is being examined and having his ultrasounds as I write this. They are scanning him to see if there has been any reduction at all in the size of the tumors. Greg seemed hopeful, albeit realistic, that there may be some options for Foggy. He said by this time next month... NEXT MONTH...they would have a better idea of whether or not Foggy is going to make it. That's a whole lot better than the "2 weeks to live" we heard 10 days ago. Greg said Foggy has gained some weight back, they are feeding him smaller meals 4 times a day, and when I asked what his daily routine is, Greg said "Whatever he feels like doing." They walk him, take him out for grass, take him near the track to watch training, give him baths, etc. He said right now the horse seems happy and perky, and because of the cancer treatment options available to humans, they are hopeful of being able to try something on Foggy. The problem is that cancer is very rare in equines, and so the treatment data is relatively obscure. Perhaps Foggy will become the "poster horse" for successful cancer treatment. Greg said he will give me an update on the ultrasound findings tomorrow.

Racing this weekend is on ESPN at 4:30 pm, NOT ESPN2 as reported yesterday in update 565.

Update 572: Bluegrass Cat has returned to his breeders in Kentucky in preparation for stud duty next year: Bluegrass Cat returns to the Blue Grass. The article includes a short video clip of his arrival.

Circle of Life: another lovely video by Melissa Harden.

Update 571: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg to catch up with Funny Cide. Barclay said he galloped three times around the "Clare Court" track today. When I first heard that I thought Barclay was kidding with me, then he went on to explain it is a small training track at Saratoga, about 3/8ths / half mile round. Funny Cide relaxes more galloping on that track. I know he is a very strong horse to gallop, so I guess anything to help him relax. Anyway all remains well for saturday. The Daily Racing Form had this article: Team Funny Cide thrilled to be back which noted the following:

There is a caveat to Funny Cide running in the Woodward. Trainer Barclay Tagg said he would not run if the track came up wet, and the weather forecast is iffy, based on the path of Tropical Storm Ernesto.

I asked Barclay about this and he confirmed that if the track came up really sloppy they would likely not run. Lets hope for better weather. The article also notes Funny's next objective, the Hawthorne Gold Cup, September 30.

Update 570: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (wednesday night). Michael Matz gave me the news as I was coming off the woodchip track on my first set. I was surprised to get the news so early so I hung around by the tunnel that goes under the dirt track so that MIchael could catch up and confirm that's what he had told me which he did. Just about to get on my second set which I presume will be Chappy who I think we are planning to breeze tomorrow.
updated thursday 6:40am

Update 569: This morning we have two more articles that discuss the merits of this outstanding three year old crop. The first: THOROUGHBRED BEAT showcases Bernardini, Barbaro, Lawyer Ron, Henny Hughes and Discreet Cat. The second: Bernardini towers over 3-year-old peers now discusses Bernardini and Barbaro, and interviews the trainer of Sweetnorthernsaint (who was actually betting favourite of the Kentucky Derby) Mike Trombetta. A couple of excerpts:

"The only thing you can say with any certainty is both were bound for greatness," said Mike Trombetta, trainer of Sweetnorthernsaint, the Laurel-based gelding that finished seventh behind Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby and second behind Bernardini in the Preakness. "Everyone saw what Barbaro could do. And now everyone is seeing what Bernardini can do. It's hard to compare them. They're alike in that they both win. All the time. No matter what happens, they just keep winning."

and

"We'll obviously never know what would have happened if they had run against each other at their best," Trombetta said. "It's too bad. I know I would have loved to see it."

and

Trombetta hopes to run Sweetnorthernsaint for many years, but he harbors no illusions. Asked if he expected to run into Bernardini again, he just laughed.

"Not on purpose," he said.

Its a big day for Lost in the Fog, here is a lovely poem, by Gloria (updates 60: timestamp 4:39 pm):

"In Our Hearts"

Lost in the Fog, such a mystical name,
For a magical horse who's achieved so much fame,
A sprinter who soars above mere mortal ground,
A champion who's proved that his talents abound.

Excitement and joy you have given us all,
And thankful we are that in your special stall,
Surrounded by comfort and care of your friends,
You can see all that love through your own special lens.

Your spirit is shining, to vanquish this foe,
And we will hold on until you say "let go."
We're with you, in this your most challenging race,
And praying that you will receive extra grace.

You're not "lost", but we're "searching" for ways to convey
How much you have shown us that words cannot say,
Please know that we value what sets you apart
For, Lost in the Fog, you've been "Found in our Hearts."

Thanks for the Articles. Nice reading! Definitely a very big day for The Fog.

Good morning Bobby and everyone! I hope you had another good night, Bobby, and an even better day ahead! :) The best of luck to LITF today, I am so glad that they are trying to save him with the treatments.....will be praying that they work.
Bobby and Lost, you are both in my prayers!

Posted by: Ruth Ann at August 31, 2006 9:09 AM

Good morning, Bobby, Alex and all!

Bobby, I hope you had a nice comfy night full of sweet stud muffin dreams, and also hope you get out for a walk and munch on some fresh grass soon.

Alex...any idea when we'll here about the Fog? I know they're way behind my time, but I'd like to have an idea of when news can be expected.

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 9:14 AM

Today we will all be waiting not only for Bobby's report but the test results for LITF. I just remembered that the Fog is out West, so those of us on the East Coast we will need more patience than usual.

Grow hoof grow!
Shrink tumors shrink!

Yes, it could be the afternoon before we here anything at all. Mabe even evening.

Good morning, Barbaro and all loyal citizens of Barbaro Nation!

I will be praying for good news from the West Coast re: Lost in the Fog. Also hope the weather here in the East will allow our boy an outside stroll.

Anyone trying to keep up with the WEG? The United States has absolutely NO coverage except for this thing called HorseTV (I don't even know if that channel even exists or not). There is a live feed here http://www.aachen2006.de/accom_video_e.htm

Does anyone know if there is a better way to watch it? This feed is terrible.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 31, 2006 9:25 AM

I love the poem by Gloria! I'm wishing so hard for a better prognosis for the Fog today.

Janice...imagine how much patience I'm going to need! :-/

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 9:28 AM

Lynda...I'm watching it now!! It's been covered quite well over here! :-)

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 9:29 AM

This is an interesting article. I don't know if it's been posted yet.

These are a couple of paragraphs that were interesting.
http://www.thehorse.com/viewarticle.aspx?ID=7522

Forms of cancer found in horses include melanoma, lymphoma, squamous cell carcinoma, granulosa cell tumor, and cancers of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, gastrointestinal tract, and bone.

Though statistics show more than 80% of gray horses over the age of 15 will develop at least one melanoma in their life, the tumors are usually benign. The most common form of metastasizing tumor is lymphoma. This tumor spreads to various parts of the body, and there are very limited treatment options for this form of cancer, which affects less than 1% of the horse population.

"We do have some chemotherapeutic protocols that are somewhat effective, but usually in veterinary medicine our goal of treatment is to maintain a good quality of life rather than to treat for a cure of the cancer," Davis said. "To clear the cancer completely from the system is difficult."

Because it is rare and horses do not often show symptoms until it is too late, it can be hard to diagnosis cancer in equines at the early stages.

"Most of the time when I diagnose lymphoma in horses, I will have a client that is just completely blown away because they'll say, 'A month ago I went to a horse show, and he performed great,' " Davis said. "There is no chance that horse was normal a month ago, but horses in general are all heart. They do what they know how to do, they do what they think they are supposed to do, and they are a prey species; therefore, it is to their advantage for survival to not let you know that something's wrong."

Jo, When it comes to equestrian sports, I wish I was over where you are!!!! The tv stations coudlnt care less about horse sports. They would rather show darts than dressage or jumping.

Well, I am hoping mabe I can buy WEG tapes. I would like to find the 1978, 1982, and 1986 WEG. but I doubt I will find them back that far.

Jo - I'm sure from that side of the Atlantic, you have more patience than the rest of us. Are you 5 hours ahead?

Lynda - have you contacted ESPN and asked why they aren't covering the games? I agree with you that they should.

Janice
PS - Has anyone heard from Cindilou lately?

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 31, 2006 10:06 AM

Lynda...it really surprises me that it's so bad over there for tv coverage of equestrian events! You'd think they could just knock off one of the weather channels! LOL

Maybe we have more sports channels here...unfortunately we still gets darts and other sports that would send me to sleep, but not at the sacrifice of other sports! :-)

I agree the live stream is worse than useless!

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 10:07 AM

####
Lynda - Somewhere I found information that NBC (TV network) will have WEG coverage on Sept.24 - 4:30 - 6:00 pm EST.

I agree - when it comes to equestrian coverage, living in the States is the pits! ESPN used to cover Grand Prix show jumping, but even that has vanished.

Posted by: Marg in Maine at August 31, 2006 10:08 AM

Janice...yeah, it's 11.10am here.

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 10:10 AM

Janice; ESPN is useless. They barely do a decent job with horse racing. Believe me, if the World Championship of Ping Pong was on, they would prempt horse racing for it.

Jo: Hahaha yea they could! Or at least one of the 50 news-all-day channels LOL.

Marge; Yea, I heard that too. But I am not holding my breath. Usually, when they show Olympic 3 day eventing, they show mostly the cross country and only a little bit of the show jumping. They show very little dressage if they show any at all.

This "HorseTV" is supposed to have rights to the WEG, but from what I am getting off of the Chronicle of the Horse web site, very few cable companies even have that station.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 31, 2006 10:15 AM

Jo - I have some questions and hope you may have some answers.

Are all European tracks grass? Has anyone compared the breakdown rate on grass against the breakdown rate on dirt? I believe I read somewhere that the grass is a better cushion, in the event of rain, it is far more treacherous. I'm also wondering about the breakdown rate of European racers vs. American racers. There has to be some way to find out if the horrendous breakdown rate in the states is due to track conditions or poor breeding or just running horses that arent' sound.

Have you read anything about these issues over there?

Janice

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 31, 2006 10:23 AM

Good luck to Lost In The Fog. I'm praying for you buddy! Hold your head up! xoxo

Posted by: Darla at August 31, 2006 10:24 AM

Lynda - I have to agree about ESPN. I've noticed that even shows like Wire to Wire are telecast at 2:00 AM. I don't think the cable company determines that schedule, I believe it's the network. With all the channels ESPN has now, you would think there would be room for more horse related events.

Janice

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 31, 2006 10:26 AM

Janice, yes, I really hate that. I wish it was on in the early afternoon here and I would watch it all the time. Yea, its the station, not the cable company when it comes to things like when the shows come on. If stations wonder why more people don't watch horse sports, it is because they either don't get up at 2am to watch Wire to Wire (I used to do that when I lived in CA!!) Or people tune in to watch a race and its preempted, so they shut it off thinking it's not going to be on.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 31, 2006 10:31 AM

Lynda,
Do you remember a few weeks ago (can't remember which race it was) when golf ran more than an hour and a half late and the race that was supposed to run at 5 came on at around 7? I wonder how many people gave up waiting. I know there were a bunch of us Barbaromaniacs that waited (we were all complaining on this site) but I bet lots of people didn't.

Janice

GOOD MORNING BOBBY AND STAFF I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT DAY. I KNOW WHAT I WANT TO BE A VET. WHAT THE STAFF AT NBC DO IS REALLY GREAT. I LOVE BOBBY AND ALL OF YOU. HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY. BOBBY BE GOOD AND DO EVERYTHING THEY TELL YOU TO. REMEMBER YOU ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND SMARTEST HORSE EVER.

Posted by: Kathy - 8yrs. at August 31, 2006 10:46 AM

I loved the piece from Jeanine, Alex - I miss most of the racing programs other than the triple crown and the Breeders cup, as hubby and I are also golf fanatics, but the article gives all the dates, so I'll know what's coming up and hubby's prett easy to negotiate with for a little horse time :o) - good to see that Barbaro is still doing great - and we've offered prayers for Lost in the Fog - have a great day - it's going to be a beauty by the looks of it when the sun was coming up this AM....watch out for those deer!

Peg

Posted by: Peg at August 31, 2006 10:47 AM

Janice, No, I don't remember that, but if it was a few weeks ago, that's when I was working 12 hour shifts at work, so I was sleeping. That does not suprise me. Did they even say anything during the golf broadcast that the race would be late? How much did they show after the golf was over, I wonder? I know they have cut into the racing, and then when they actually get to it, they don't update anything and they even barely show the end of the race. No interviews, no going over the race, nothing. I have seen that too many times. What is going to happen now that ESPN has the Breeder's Cup? They are liable to preempt that.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at August 31, 2006 10:48 AM

Alex - thanks so much for the good report. I laughed so hard reading it. ;>) I guess all of us Barbaromaniacs are so paranoid about Bobby's condition and interpret every single word used to describe it that we have infected you somewhat.

LOL, LOL, LOL

Janice

Lynda,

12 hour shifts - yikes! re: the race, if I recall correctly, they did do an abbreviated broadcast. During the golf game they had a trailer across the bottom of the screen from time to time stating that the race would follow. They didn't do it immediately though, and I was surfing all over the place looking for the race. I finally gave up and got on this site and saw that others commented about the race being delayed due to the golf game. So I knew then that it wasn't my cable company goofing up. Recently there was a basketball game but that wasn't a very long delay.

Janice

Posted by: Janice from Florida at August 31, 2006 10:57 AM

Janice...all the courses I've seen televised in the UK are grass, and I've been wondering why your main tracks are dirt-track and not grass.

As to your other questions, I've been wondering about the answers myself, especially after reading about deaths at the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and I hate the Grand National because it's pretty certain that a horse will die, although I heard this is the first year they all survived, but I'll have to check up on that. I usually blank out this race every year because it upsets me so much.

Anyway...I found this article which shows there are investigations into fatalities on UK courses at least, but I haven't found out if the statistics have been published yet.

It would be interesting to compare US with UK statsitics, but something that might affect results is that we have steeplechases here and I'm not sure if you do over there. At least I haven't seen any races where your horses jump fences, but I'm pretty new to the racing scene!

Here's the link...but be prepared for a couple of disturbing images.

Jo, we don't have too much steeplechasing here, but we do have some. Saratoga will have, like a steeplechase a week, and Colonial Downs has it, as well as Keenland when it is open. There may be a few other tracks, but it's not nearly as prevalent as Europe.

I am not sure about the dirt track thing. I always though turf racing was more elegant. Definitely cleaner LOL.

Jo, I have seen that video before. We have groups like that here and you do have to be careful of them. Even though they have good hearts, I think, they would have us put our horses in padded stalls or else let them all be wild. I am afraid that if we did all they wanted us to do we would not be using horses for anything and they would be treated like cows.

Good morning all. Love to Barbaro and Fog. Big day for Fog--prayers are with him.

Posted by: Linda at August 31, 2006 11:24 AM

Lynda, I agree with you...tey're hearts are in the right places but sometimes they can be a little extreme. I've just been to their website through the link at the bottom, but couldn't face watching the video of horse deaths on the track...bad enough when you see something like that by accident.

Still it would be nice to see some statistics from the Jockey Club published, but these things seem to be swept under the carpet, much like over there when a horse breaks down and is vanned off. It's like it never happened.

I do agree with you about grass courses...call me soft but they always seem so much more horse friendly!

Have you done a search on any of our courses?
Check http://www.yorkracecourse.co.uk/ out...it's very close to me and where Enticing ran recently :-)

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 11:26 AM

Jo

thanks so much for that information. I've been wondering if it's just a USA problem but it appears that it's not. I've also wondered if running the other direction (I assume all European tracks run clockwise; ours - counter clockwise) has any effect. I don't know why that would, but just a thought.

I can't stand steeplechase and would never watch it. You almost know that there ARE going to be breakdowns.

I do appreciate the link you provided, and even more so, I really appreciate the warning. Knowing me, I'd better not check it out. I would carry those images to my grave. At the very least, I probably wouldn't be able to sleep right for weeks. I just don't have the strength for that. I'm a real wuss and can't stand to see animals suffer.

Well - I'm hoping and praying as I know many of our fellow Barbaromaniacs are that horse racing on both sides of the Atlantic can be made safer for our equine friends and that care for horse becomes more important than winning. If horse racing is to survive - that is what must happen, IMHO.

Have a great day one and all! I'll check back later for a "Foggy" update.

Jo, thanks for the link!! I haven't done too much of a search, but when Gary Stevens went over there to ride, I found a news site from there that gave horse racing updates, so I could keep track of how he was doing. I think Europe does a great job with their horse racing updates. I think part of our problem here is that we are drowning in too much horse racing, and sports in general.

Good Morning Everyone,

ACN, Barbaro, what wonderful words to see. Everyday is a new day and another step closer to the day you will be able to go home. Have a wonderful day with lots of treats, scratchies and and a trip outside if the weather permits.

Foggy, we will all be sending love, positive energy and prayers you way to day, I just know that we are going to hear a positive report today as a result of the sonogram.

Thanks as always, Alex, for the early report, you are the best! Please let Michael know that we admire and care for him. He is a true gentleman and a wonderful trainer.

Janice...as Lynda pointed out this is quite an extreme group, but nevertheless the problem is here as well. I'm not sure if it's as bad as in the US, but it would be interesting to compare statistics and see.

I have a problem with steeplechasing too. It's nice to see these beautiful animals when they fly, but not fall! I prefer show-jumping...don't know, but the horses just seem to be more in control, and sturdier!

Good morning, all!

Alex, so glad for the ACN report! I can just imagine you "ambushing" Michael Matz, saying, "did I hear you right??? I have a whole site full of Barbaromaniacs who analyze every word I say, so I've got to get it right!" LOL

Lovely poem, Gloria. Prayers for good test results for The Fog today, and some outdoor grazing for our Bobby.

Very nice that Barbaro had a good evening. Wheww....!!!

Let's keep the good news flowing! Lost in the Fog we are all on pins and needles, waiting to hear good news from your camp. We love you, buddy and Barbaro sends you his good wishes.

All of the three year old horses are the best and are champions! We love all of you!

Keep on getting better, Barbaro. You amaze me every day.

Alex: Thanks as ever. What would we do without you?

Jo, I think jumpers may be sturdier, at least the ones who are warmbloods. they have thicker legs. I like steeplechasing, but it seems like the races with many horses are very bad. I saw some crazy steeplechase that was in Checkoslavakia (I KNOW I spelled that wrong LOL), I think it was an extreme race or something and it was horrible. Horses falling everywhere, inside ditches, in deep water, etc. The race must have been 6 or 7 miles and I dont hink more than a few horses finished. At least 20 had started. It was just plain stupid in my view.

Lynda...that sounds even worse than the Grand National! I was reading somewhere about a race called the suicide run, and it sounds horrific...maybe even worse than what you saw in Czechoslovakia!

Just seen a report on our racing channel about Dunstall Park, Wolverhampton. It has a polytrack!

If you love SteepleChase, then you need to visit Fair Hill in May and in Sept. After you stop by Tim Woolleys and say hi to Alex you can head to the grandstands for a nice day of racing. Here is a link for you and all.

Good Morning everyone:

Glad to hear Barbaro had ACN and looking forward to when they remove his cast. No more anesthetic for Barbaro.

Hoping everything turns out positive for LITF.

###
We just saw that "Glenn Ford passed away." Sorry to see that.

Here in the UAE we do get to see English Horseracing and Equestrian Competitions, but not the horse races in the United States.

Isn't it true that, "You don't realize what you have until you lose it" and "You always want what you can't have."

So, my question is which woud you prefer?

Posted by: Socorro at August 31, 2006 12:39 PM

Socorro, well, we used to have showjumping coverage here quite a bit, and then it was taken away. I used to watch it every weekend inbetween the horse races. Now I have to hope OLN shows a jumping competition mabe twice a year or something and the horse racing coverage, even though it seems to be more of it, it still get preempted. So, I think we are missing what we used to have. I dont think it was ever, " We don't realize what we have until we loose it". We (or at least I) knew what we had and then we lost it.

This report just came in about Bluegrass Cat...
(sorry if it's already been posted)

Bluegrass Cat finds home at stud farm
Despite broken leg, horse arrives safely in Kentucky

His racing career over, Bluegrass Cat began phase two of life Tuesday when he arrived at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky.

Bluegrass Cat, who broke his right hind leg when finishing second in the Travers Stakes here on Saturday, arrived at WinStar Tuesday.

"He arrived safely there," trainer Todd Pletcher said at his barn at the Oklahoma Training Track Wednesday. "We loaded him on the van here and he was capable of walking on by himself. It went as good as we could have hoped for."

Bluegrass Cat vanned to Albany where he boarded a plane and flew to Lexington. Pletcher said he is not sure what will happen now but he said WinStar, which owns the colt, was leaning toward not performing surgery on the leg.

Bluegrass Cat will begin his stud career at WinStar next season.

QUESTION:

Will Bluegrass Cat be alright without the surgery?

If he goes to stud, will he be okay without the surgery?

Hopefully he will not be shipped out of the United States.

Hopefully, the owner of BGC is making his decision in the best interest of BGC and not because of money issues.

hank you Jo (UK) for sharing that information.

Hi, Socorro:

I know it seems strange not to do surgery on BC, but we have a retired race horse at our barn who had the same injury when she retired. She healed up on her own with no surgery...Gaits aren't always smooth, but she's a happy, pampered mare! Still pretty spunky, too!

I'll be anxiously awaiting for news on the Fog. My stomach is in my throat. But I am so happy to hear ACN for Barbaro! Positive thoughts, positive thoughts, positive thoughts! As for BGC, same questions as above. It sounded like he has a fairly serious leg injury if they were concerned about him walking out on his own. Will not treating this injury create permanent lameness?

Good morning Barbaro and fellow Barbaromaniacs. So glad to hear ACN once again. I am really enjoying the articles about the strong 3 year olds we have. Most of them have been written well and speak highly of our Bobby. Of course, like DebG, I have my own opinions. I had to watch Barbaro's Kentucky Derby again after reading the articles and it's just SOOOO impressive. If you haven't watched it in a while, you must do so.

Good luck today LITF. We are all here for you.

Foggy, everyone has you in their thoughts today as you go for your ultrasound. Hope you get nothing but good news! We'll be waiting.

As for Alex's comment yesterday regarding roving reporting, my son offered to drag me around in his farrier truck...but I don't think an "in depth look at horses hooves" is exactly what he had in mind.

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 1:35 PM

Just got this report through. Don't know if anybody else has seen it...it's a new one for me.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro feasts on fresh handpicked grass everyday while he recovers at Penn’s large animal hospital, but whether the recuperation time will lead to a full recovery remains unclear.

Barbaro — a colt who fractured his leg severely during the Preakness in May — has been kept under close watch by animal surgeon Dean Richardson, who performed the surgery immediately after Barbaro’s injury.

According to the latest update, Barbaro remains in stable condition after a summer of physical ups and downs at the New Bolton Center, located outside of Philadelphia. He had the cast on his hind leg changed Sunday.

“He has made improvements in certain areas, but there are still other issues with this recovery,” said Penn School of Veterinary Medicine spokeswoman Gail Luciani.

These “other issues” do indicate the end of his career, however, owner and Penn grad Roy Jackson said.

“He seems to be all right, healing slowly, but he will never race again,” he said.

Both Roy and his wife Gretchen visit Barbaro every day to check up on his condition and supply him with only the best in hay and grass.

Since Barbaro was admitted to New Bolton Center, he has garnered much national exposure and publicity. Richardson appeared on The Early Show and Good Morning America to discuss Barbaro’s status. In addition, an anonymous donation established the Barbaro Fund, which raises money to support the New Bolton Center’s needs.

Barbaro’s condition will likely remain unpredictable.

“Nobody knows how he’s going to turn out,” Jackson said. “We wait day to day.”

Barbaro, you gorgeous guy, so glad to read those three little letters "A C N" this morning. Now I can breathe much easier and begin to look forward to my day. Hang in there, Champ, we're always with you.

HERE IS A GREAT STORY!!!!!

(an e-mail I received and very appropriate for this site!I Love it and hope you all do too!!!)

Just up the road from my friend's home is a field with two horses in it. From a distance, each looks like every other horse. But if a person stops and watches the horses, he or she will notice something quite amazing. One horse is blind. His human caregiver has chosen NOT to have him put down, but has made a good home for him.
Listening, one will hear the sound of a bell that comes from the smaller horse in the field. A small bell is attached to her bridle. It lets her blind friend know where she is, so he can follow her. Upon observation, one sees how she is always checking on him, and that he will listen for her bell and then slowly walk to where she is,trusting that she will not lead him astray.

Like the human caregivers of these two horses, GOD does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need.Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by God and those whom he places in our lives. At other times, we are the guide horse, helping others see God.

Good friends are like stars. You don't always see them, but you know they are always there.

Tim Woolley Racing website is a blessing for all of us!! Thank You Alex!!

Love to you all, Betsy in FL.

I know the Smarty one sold for a few thousand, I wonder what a Barbaro one would go for?
They show more talent painting with their hooves, noses and tails than a lot of "art" I have seen at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Good morning to you, O Prince of Light, Fleet of Foot and Bright of Eye, from the West Coast fleet in Foggy land. May you have a peaceful day while we struggle and fidget, hoping and praying for your brother today.

A reminder to any who wish to email best wishes to Lost in the Fog, Greg Gilchrist and Harry Aleo, you may send by simply using this address in your TO: line -

questions@goldengatefields.com

and you all know the SUBJECT...

It may have been mentioned earlier, but just in case - there is a wonderful post in the discussion forum by VanDamme1 yesterday, 8/30, at 6:12 pm under the folder, FLORIST UPDATE FOR FOGGY. She gives background on the florist family (Ana's) and the research so far on what the Fog likes (NO pears!!! and all ORGANIC to fight the cancer, of course!). It may be while before they're up to KF speed, but then they don't have the incredibly appreciative NBC staff waiting at the door with eager anticipation!

KF - congratulations on your ever expanding roles at NBC... you deserve it. Thank you for setting such a terrific example of service above and beyond, all heart. Love you all.

Saying prayers today for Lost in the Fog. Prayerfully, we will get good news about him. It is my understanding that if the tumors have not grown, they might attempt surgery (not today...). According to Bloodhorse, there is one tumor that is inoperable, irrespective of the results of today's scan. Anyway, The Fog is in God's hands, as he has been all along.

Sarah and Mary...I see that Michele has already posted the link which is good because I think I deleted it after I read it!

I know it's not as upbeat as we're used to, and it's not meant to panic us, but for starters, until the cast comes off his right leg we don't know if he's going to walk on it, and secondly, he needs to regrow that left hoof.

This is stuff we already knew, and it's why we're all here watching him like hawks!

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 2:08 PM

ok, the article Jo posted that sounds weird to some of us:

It's U of Penn student newspaper, and it sounds like they have pieced together tidbits from various stages of Barbaro's recovery. They report that "he'll never race again" as if that's something new.

Good morning Barbaro! ACN - music to my ears. Hopefully you'll be able to get out and munch some nice fresh green grass the recent rain has produced.

Praying for good today news for LITF.

There's a great new article at Bloodhorse.com regarding the first day at Woodbine over the brand new polytrack track!

http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35106

A quote from the article - a tribute to Barbaro:

"From the moment I heard about (Polytrack) and what it did as far as reduction of injuries to horses, I was determined that we had to do it," said David Willmot, president and chief executive officer of Woodbine Entertainment.
"For someone like me who has had two Horses of the Year destroyed on the racetrack, we owe the horses this. We also owe the public who have had to watch Barbaro."

Barbaro will go down in history as a major contributor in saving many horses' lives in the future. THAT'S what his real legacy will be.

I love you, big fella!

GOOD MORNING TO YOU ALEX!!!
Thanks for the update and for getting us all the racing info to keep us in the loop! You're the best and you make it easy for us to visualize being there with you as you get your updates from Michael.

LOST IN THE FOG,

What is the big deal with the article?????????

Barbaro is healing but is by NO means out of the woods. Alex calmly reminded us of this when he addressed why he used "OK" when describing Barbaro's night a few back.

Family, we are witnessing a miracle here plain and simply. Hence, every day when I hear Bobby had ACN, I rejoice and thank God.

Remember, "little drops of rain make the mighty ocean". This is how we must view each day of Bobby's progress. By Christmas, if by the graze of God, he is still having ACN, then we can firmly begin to believe he has made it.

Grow Hoof Grow!

Love to Bobby and to all

Good Morning, Everyone,

So glad to see ACN. Barbaro, you are such a good boy. You must know how loved you are, and have figured out how to comply with THIS particular "training"program. You are a remarkably good and wise boy. God is with you.

Sharonlynn: Your sensitivity to the "signs" in Hidalgo really touched a cord in me. A few weeks back, there was some discussion of somehow adding Mustang blood to Thoroughbereds to improve their soundness...for the GOOD of the breed and to the benefit of the horses.

I looked up a lot of information on Mustangs, and about Frank Hopkins, (FrankHopkins.com)... as a result of what someone such as I can tell, the addition of pure Spanish Mustang blood would not compromise the integrity of thoroughbred lineage (they have common ancestry).

I wish some University, or breeder somewhere would be willing to begin the process.

Thanks Judy for posting the article on Woodbine and the new polytrack course. I was watching racing from there last night and only realized then at they had just installed it. Everyone was raving about it. I hadn't realized that Woodbine was only the 2nd racetrack in NA to implement this. I am proud and relieved to have it at my local track! Hopefully this story will make the rounds to the other tracks - it is very positive, and the cost has to outweigh the negatives. It is good for business when racing fans know that their tracks care about the horses, despite the costs. Yes, Barbaro's story will help this cause. Your injury dear boy is not in vain!

I'm just watching the Irish racing at Tralee, and I've just seen a jockey, Hayes, kicking, hand urging and using the whip on Da Pooch, a 3 year old filly, while they were still in the starting gate! The poor horse didn't want to go into the gate to begin with, and she looked so distressed!Surely this isn't allowed! Can anybody tell me?

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 2:58 PM

"Claire Court" is a very heavy , narrow training track in the barn area of the main track as opposed to the Oklahoma Training track at Saratoga.

Its nornally used to re-hab injured horses cause of its deepness and safety. Its a really cool track cause it goes around the barns and under trees.

I saw Funny Cide train over it I believe 2 years ago when he prepped for a stakes race up there against Mineshaft and Evening Attire. The Saratoga Handicap or Saratoga Breeders Cup, or to that effect, Funny Cide Ran 3rd I think.

Jo,

Sorry you witnessed that. It's hard for us animal lovers that have a great deal of caring in our souls to see these things. I was exposed to a dressage horse once that was rescued from Europe because he had been so mistreated. After a few months, he started to come around and trust people. He ended up doing very well.

Re: FOG. It's a sunny, cool morning here in Saratoga. The morning workouts -- what a wonderful way to start the day -- were a sheer delight. Horses and ponies going about their work with ease. People watching, sipping coffee, chatting about who looks good. The all do.

The 8th race today, THE NEW YORK TURF WRITERS CUP (Grade I) $150,000 Run in Memory of D. M. Smithwick. A hurdle race. Seven horses aged 5-10 will run 2 3/8.

Outside the West entry gates -- you who've been there may remember -- a fountain. Around this fountain, a circle of jockey statues painted with the colors of stables. Like the ones you see on lawns, only different. In the outstretched hands of these jockeys, signs painted with the names of last year's Saratoga Stakes winners.

On the southeast side, lit by the morning sun, the simple sign: LOST IN THE FOG, Kings Bishop Stakes, August 27, 2005. A winner's sign in the circle of winners.

Fog, we wish you a big win, place and show from your test today. As they say, it's a beautiful day to save lives. Good luck, big fella! -- Susan in Saratoga

Hi Renee,

Not really feisty, just trying to, as they say in the rap community, "Keep it real....." LOL

######
Thanks for your concern. I took OtherLyn's words to heart yesterday. When you cannot change a person's mind to love you, then why waste energy and life trying to do so? I went the route of constant gifts and such to no avail. As they say, "Can't buy me love.........."

So I decided yesteday to just forgive and move on. Does it mean the pain is gone? Nope. Havn't slept in 3 days. BUT, it allows me to keep it real. Nothing I can do will change matters so I stopped trying. Eventually I will be fully back to the Jazz Man I am capable of. But, since this exact thing happened TWO times now in my life, the shock and "Shame on Me For being so Stupid..." hurts more than anything.

Regarding the article, maybe weird wasn't the right word. It was definitely unbalanced journalism with all the 'bad' stuff...not a word said about grazing outside, signs of hoof regrowth, the results of the radiographs from Sunday's cast change, etc.

Sarah,

This how they sell newspapers and get ratings on TV. Did anyone see the early projections of the hurricane that hit and fizzled in FL? CNN had it tracking right to New Orleans!!! Yep!! They hyped it up to get ratings.

What will make you tune in at eleven?
1. Hurrican could devastate N.O. one year later!
or
2. Weak Storm to do no damage....

The same damn thing Baltimore news did with Bobby early on.

Again, what would make you tune in at 11?

1. Kentucky Derby winner's chances of living are bleak and he is hour to hour (exact teaser I heard).

or.

2. Barbaro had ACN

So I agree the atricle was slanted, but really not telling us something we don't already know.

Cheers!

Jazz

Posted by: Jazz at August 31, 2006 3:25 PM

Margie...I don't know how some of these of horses can tolerate people being near them when they've been treated so badly.

I can understand the use of the whip when it doesn't hurt or scare a horse (I've heard it's also a steering aid), but since I've known Barbaro and been getting more involved in the racing scene I've seen the whipping rules badly abused, and if this is going to keep happening then the whip needs to be banned...end of story.

I'm really sorry I posted that Bobby article cos it seems to have caused panic in the ranks, and I never meant for that to happen. Ok, it wasn't one of those articles that makes us want to shout YIPPEE, but I didn't see it as negative either...just reality.

Listen to Jazz says...he's keeping it real!!

Posted by: Jo (UK) at August 31, 2006 3:27 PM

Alex: Clare Court is a part of the old, 19th century racing grounds...it's tucked away in the woods behind the backstretch, I think.

I have to say that I'm surprised that they're running Funny Cide in the Woodward--he's not been up to a Grade I for a while (the JC Gold Cup a few years ago, I think), and he's been successful at lower levels. Even if they wanted to race him at Saratoga, there had to be easier spots for him, I would think.

###### The reason I am posting the following on this site is because I'm not sure a lot of people see the discussion boards. Wild Life Sanctuary has been posted here before and it made people aware, me included.

I had sent an email to Best Friends and received a reply which is posted on the discussion board. However, they were rather vague on how they planned concrete help for the Wild Animal Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary has a new video..they call it the closing video and I want to tell you, the sight of those animals, lying under a tree, or cavorting in a pool, all unaware that their lives will be taken shortly breaks my heart. They have already known abuse, and to be euthanized because there is no money available to help keep them alive is a crime! No ifs, ands or buts about it!.

I'm sending a donation today. If any of you can spare just a few dollars, please DO send it immediately. If they can get enough to keep it operating while they figure out long term plans, it will help each and every animal that is there.

Another caveat to the article that was posted--it came from the U Penn student newspaper. The "student" reporters (who are supposed to be learning on the job) are not always as careful or accurate in their characterizations as "professional" working journalists might be, which may account for the odd tone/composition of the article.

Susan W :

Thanks for looking up GENUINE RISK's info for me. I know that GENUINE REWARD has never been raced, and that he now stands at stud. But there WAS another foal in 1999, out of CHIEF HONCHO, named COUNT OUR BLESSING.

All I could find is that the foal was training in Maryland with someone named Jimmy Murphy. That is where to trail ends.

Gosh I sure would hate to think that one of the only tow living offspring of GENUINE RISK may have simply disappeared. (I think of FERDINAND and EXCELLER).

Really dumb question coming...

What time is it now in California...just tense about news on Foggy?

Posted by: Lynn in Austin, Texas at August 31, 2006 3:58 PM

Lynn, it's 9 a.m. west coast time. I'm wondering if they will even release results today? We're so spoiled with our daily updates on Barbaro, it may not be the same for LITF. I hope not, it was just a thought that crossed my mind this morning.

Lynn...are they awake in CA yet? My day's almost over! LOL

I think we should all meet at the Kentucky Derby next year (with Barbaro in attendence of course) and toast him with Renee's newly created drink
"The Barbarotini" instead of the Mint Julep!!!

The article makes me a little edgy because of the unknown factor about why Barbaro was just "OK" earlier this week. If something was going on that we haven't heard the explaination for. Just to verify that it was the anesthesia recovery would be helpful.

OTHERLYN...Thank you for noticing my "signs" from the movie Hidalgo. It was a sign, first time I saw the movie, only at the part the horse was on the ground and ended up winning the race then being set free...powerful movie....gonna be on AMC again Sept. 17 Sunday...I definitely will watch it!

ANYBODY HERE KNOW WHEN WE CAN EXPECT WORD ON FOGGY? I am a nervous wreck!
