Barbaro Updates: 62

updates are now here.

Update 581: Chemotherapy Next for Champ Lost in the Fog, some relevant excerpts:

Gilchrist, during a brief teleconference from Golden Gate Fields, said the hope is that chemotherapy can put the 4-year-old colt's lymphoma into remission and give the horse as much as two years of quality life.

"It would have to be a miracle for Lost in the Fog to be cured," Gilchrist said. "This is something that puts it into remission and allows him to go on."

and

"We've come to another cross in the road. They feel that we were doing isn't really helping that much," Gilchrist said. "He could have two, three, four months (to live) with what we are doing right now. There are always exceptions, of course, when you are dealing with something like this. But with chemotherapy it could be as much as two years."

and

In the meantime, Lost in the Fog "is in very good spirits," Gilchrist said, although he has lost a little weight because they haven't been feeding him as much as they did when he was in training. "His quality of life is good right now. If you just walked up to him, you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with him. I don't think he's being affected by anything going on around him or within him."

Update 580: Just spoke to Peter and he had just spoken to Michael, Barbaro continues to remain comfortable. Michael was over this afternoon and was pleased with Bobby.

Kennett Florist's Alie left this comment (timestamp: 9:05pm):

Hello All
I went to NBC before 9 this morning with bagels, coffee, juices, cream cheeses, ect. with a side of green tops. I went back alittle before
4 pm. With snacks for the next shift. And evening carotts & treats for ICU. I cannot tell the number of people who ask me to express how much They appreciate all you guys do. All seemed well. Everyone rushing around, before the storm starts. So far we have only had a little drizzle.
I will check in tomorrow. Rachel will be back Tuesday.
Have a great night.
God Bless.
We Believe
From Kennett square & KF

And finally, we will have a vigil tomorrow, September 2, 7 pm east coast time. This will be for both Barbaro and Lost in the Fog. Whereever you are, whatever you are doing, spare some time for Bobby and The Fog.

Update 579: Lost in the Fog's condition unchanged from the Daily Racing Form. Relevant excerpt:

"There's really not much to say. Everything is pretty much as it was," trainer Greg Gilchrist said from Del Mar on Friday. "Yesterday, we scanned the horse again, and, really, there's no change. Things are no better. Things are no worse. Everything's pretty much status quo."

Gilchrist said that he and Lost in the Fog's owner, Harry Aleo, would consult with veterinarians, "and we'll discuss our options."

Update 578: Just spoke to Steve Willard, Giacomo's exercise rider. Giacomo had his first breeze today since his run in the Pacific Classic. As Steve said to me, he was feeling good and doing well so it was time to breeze him again. He breezed well, he went 5/8ths of a mile. He was blowing a little bit after the breeze (very normal) and cooled out well. Steve also noted that Giacomo's mental attitude is terrific after his last race. Steve was not yet sure what race they were pointing for next for Giacomo but great to hear he is doing well. Steve now gets a day off!

Update 577: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg. Funny Cide had his final gallop before tomorrow's Woodward. He did the same as yesterday (on the "Clare Court" track, galloping three times around). He went well and is feeling good! He will go out for a quick jog tomorrow as the race is quite late in the afternoon (lets hope the weather cooperates).

Fair Hill's woodchip track was a busy place this morning. The dirt was closed and there was plenty of traffic for one track in anticipation of the pending weather coming in. Right after the break a few of the Fair Hill "Big Guns" were out to breeze. Miraculous Miss, under Ramon Dominguez went 5/8ths, I think in about 1:01. This may be her final stiff breeze before she starts back (she has not run since the Acorn). Also out breezing were the Graham Motion pair, Better Talk Now and Film Maker. They also went 5/8ths, nice and easy, in hand (I think). I believe that may be their first works since their Arlington trip a couple of weekends ago. I was also out breezing, with Tim, hence I could not really watch the aforementioned breezes too closely. I did see Miraculous Miss at the beginning of her breeze, she was coming by between the 3/8ths and half mile pole, as we were turning in. She looked like she was galloping along. Our breeze also went well, nice and in hand.

Update 576: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (thursday night). Just saw Michael Matz on my way to the woodchip track for my second set to breeze Chappy. Tim and I are breezing in company; Tim is on Who's Happy. Unfortunately, the dirt track is closed today due to the impending weather which makes for a little too exciting a time on the woodchip track with all the horses out there. I think Miraculous Miss might also be breezing today after the break.
updated friday 6:55am

Update 575: The Woodward, the marquee race for saturday, is currently an eleven horse field, headed by Flower Alley, last year's Travers winner. Funny Cide will be in post position 10 (assuming the track is not sloppy and he does run). Flower Alley on his game. Coverage is on ESPN, 4:30 pm.

On the three year old front, Brother Derek and Bob and John are both making their first starts back since the triple crown, against each other on saturday in Del Mar: Brother Derek back, faces Bob and John. An excerpt:

The bar has been raised high. Bernardini has parlayed his Preakness victory into wins in the Jim Dandy and Travers Stakes. Lawyer Ron came back last weekend to capture the St. Louis Derby. Discreet Cat romped last weekend at Saratoga. Showing Up took the Secretariat Stakes. Yes, many of the top 3-year-olds from the first half of the year have kept on motoring right through the summer.

Now it's time for two more familiar names to show if they are as good now as they were then. On Saturday at Del Mar, two of the spring's biggest stars make their comebacks, with the added intrigue of racing against one another.

We know Bluegrass Cat has now returned home: Bluegrass Cat finds home at stud farm, a decision whether to perform surgery has not yet been made, excerpt:

Pletcher said he is not sure what will happen now but he said WinStar, which owns the colt, was leaning toward not performing surgery on the leg.

Lost in the Fog's test results should be made available (to his connections) today, the results are to be compared with previous tests: Lost in the Fog undergoes tests:

Results of the detailed physical examination, which took an hour on Thursday afternoon, won't be known for 24 hours until blood work is analyzed and comparisons are made between the ultrasound examination with previous tests.

For those considering visiting Fair Hill this weekend, check the weather! You are still welcome to visit us, be at Parlo 1 at 8 am, but if there is wet weather it will not be as much fun, and there won't be too much activity.

Comments

Thank you Alex for all the information re: upcoming races and many of the horses either now running or recently retired. I'm praying that the test results for LITF are good, as we've hoped.

Good morning, morning shift!

Looking forward to ACN for Barbaro and good news for the Fog.

Hope all in Ernesto's path have lots of Gortex and good drainage. The forecast in Maine is for showers on Monday from it.

Thank you once again, Alex, for your dedication to Barbaro and his loyal subjects. And thanks to Michael, Peter, and Kathy for being so generous with information about Barbaro.

Barbaro,

You are going to need an appointments secretary soon:

"Let's see, Peter, I can only fit you in once on Thursday, Michael has most of my afternoon booked! Was it a brushing you were thinking? Just, a second, I may have a cancellation, let me get this call, can you hold?"

Have a great day with your people, Barbaro. Luv ya, dude!

Thank GOD for comfortable nights, and who would know the up to the minute situation better than Mr. Matz? He's so awesome in his devotion and truly loves Barbaro and I'm sure B loves him. What's not to love in either case?

ALEX, thank you as always...I'm sorry you'll have a bummer weekend, weatherwise. I wish they'd let you visit Barbaro one day.. Perhaps when he's out of ICU...

I guess no grazing for B these next few days :-(

Posted by: Christine at September 1, 2006 11:15 AM

Good morning and thanks for the early morning update and good news. Hope we get good news later today on LITF.

Did anyone post this yet? Another type of Barbaro effect/comparison. It's amazing how he's always mentioned when it comes to heart warming stories! Sorry if it's a repost.

We're expecting 4-8 inches of rain today in MD! Hope they're wrong..........

Posted by: Anne at September 1, 2006 11:18 AM

Alex, again - thank you. Every day this is the first site I go to. I'm so grateful for your "investigative reporting" and the great stories you come up with. And Jeannine is a treasure!

Keep going, Bobby! I'm so glad he just keeps having comfortable nights. I hope when the weather improves, he can get back out there and do some serious grazing.

And everyone still facing Ernesto -- I'm thinking of you and hoping you make it through in good shape.

Posted by: J. Carson Black at September 1, 2006 11:20 AM

Hiya, Bobbey! ACN = absolutely cool news. You've reached the end of another "work week of healing", putting you closer towards your goal. Sorry that the weather will be so awful this weekend, sweet prince. Do you have to stay indoors when it is rainy outside? Wishing you extra pampering so that you don't get "cabin fever"! Thank you Alex for all the updates on Barbaro and Foggy. My heart, thoughts and prayers are with them all day.I light candles everyday single day for them and make vigils every day for both and also unite in all of the vigils that are requested on this site. I will send a donation to the Wild Santuary that is the most in need in the name of Barbaro. We have been shook up here in Puerto Rico with the Barbaro situation and we pray for him. We have been touched also by Foggy. I have learned so much about this sport on this site and my love for horses are growing so much and I want to make a difference in their behalf. I love and enjoy all the posts that are written in here. One day I will go to Fair Hill ,I think it is a wonderful place and I will see my favorite one, Barbaro, when he gets out of NBC. Hope we have positive and wonderful news about Foggy. If one day a movie is made about Barbaro, the perfect Dr.R,will be Hugh Laurie,Dr. House. We love you, Alex, keep on with the good work! Thanks Alex for all the updates (and clarifying for me when the horseracing is on Saturday... :)

The picture of Michael Matz and Barbaro (horse of a lifetime) is absolutely beautiful.

Here is an article regarding a horse that fell in a well and they called him 'second to barbaro, he is the luckiest horse in the country'

http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/news/state/15410269.htm

Belgian horse rescued after falling down well

RADCLIFF, Ky. - Radcliff Fire Chief Rick Ledford has performed plenty of rescues during his years on the job, everything from pulling children out of bannisters to people out of holes.

But nothing prepared Ledford for what he saw when he arrived at Charlie Ray's property on Wednesday.

Down in a 28-foot-deep cave stood Ruby, a 1,200-pound Belgian workhorse. The horse had apparently fallen into the cave while grazing. The ground around the cave entrance had streaks from where the horse tried to keep itself from falling in.

Ruby was shaken, but not in any real danger. Still, it took a team of rescuers nearly four hours to pull her to safety. A veterinarian gave her a muscle relaxer and then an anesthetic that left her unconscious for 30 minutes while rescuers used a crane to lift her to safety.

Once out of the cave, Ruby wobbled a little as well-wishers patted her muddy coat.

"She looks pretty good," Ray said. "It's been some kind of day."

Other than a few scrapes and a small amount of blood on her legs and her muzzle, the horse appeared to be fine.

"She's pretty much unscathed," said veterinarian Chad Bailey. "Second to Barbaro, she's the luckiest horse in the country."

Barbaro , Alex says the rain is coming soon, so I guess it will in your area soon too. I'm so happy you are all warm and cozy in a dry stall for this event. Can't get that cast wet. NO MORE CHANGES > we hope!

Stay high and dry , Big Guy , and our prayers are always with you. Also praying for your friend , The Fog.

Good morning, all!

Alex, thank you for ACN--music to our ears!

Wow, I had forgotten (or didn't know?) that Bob and John was the lukewarm favorite in the Belmont? That shows how the competition changed with Barbaro on the sidelines and Bernardini skipping that race.

Good luck to all racing this weekend. It's great to see so many of the spring 3yos back--so sad that the best one is in the hospital :(

Bobby, hang in there with all this wet weather...fuse those bones and grow that hoof!

Foggy, shrink those tumors! Praying for a good report for you today.

Love to all, and stay dry if you're in the East!

Good morning sweet Barbaro, so glad you had ACN.
Stay dry from the storms and maybe, instead of grazing outside, you will have baby carrots, spearmints and treats to look forward to and visits from Michael.

People have asked about Horse of a Lifetime. Regalmrj is the artist. Those eyes are so mesmerizing. The sketch is so positive ! Thanks so much Roseann for sharing your talent with us.

Well Good Morning, Barbaro!!
When I arrived home yesterday I found in my mailbox a BEAUTIFUL card with your picture (with Edgar on board!!) from UPENN!! Wow!
We have placed your picture in a place of honor with Our Lady, St. Jude, St. Joseph, and an angel kneeling in prayer!
Love you oh so much, Barbaro, and here's a kiss to your nose, lots of hugs and "scratchies"!
Know you are missing your special friend, Dr. R! I am thinking we will hear a loud "neigh" from you all the way here (York - Lancaster area, PA) when he gets back to you - smiles!! I'll bet you have another hug and a nip for him, too!!
Not sure if you've been able to go outside with Michael and Peter as the weather is a bit off, but at least the nasty humidity left - touch of fall in the air this morning! I'm sure the ICU staff is helping to keep you cheered!
Remember dear Fog and Mike Rea in your prayers, too!
Our prayers continue for you round the clock!!!
WE BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!!
WE BELIEVE IN BARBARO!!
My heart beats for you, Barbaro!! How beautiful and wise you are. . .
Keep the ears perked up and remember positive healing thoughts!
Our Lady, St. Jude, St. Francis are watching over you! Hugs & Carrots, Lou Ann, Pennsylvania

##################
Lynnette - loved your post this a.m. regarding "Ruby" the Belgian workhorse, Kentucky!
God Bless Ruby!! Had to be a horrid feeling. Sounds as if St. Francis was with her and I hope Ruby gets some extra treats for her ordeal! Thank you for sharing that!
###################

Suspect it will take a bit of time till we have official news for dear Lost In The Fog, as with human medical tests and procedures it takes time for scans and reports to be interpreted and consultations made. Have to take comfort in the fact meanwhile that she has Mr. Aleo and Mr. Gilcrist, and all our prayers continue all over the world.

Good Morning, Alex! Touch of fall in the air this a.m., hope you have lovely riding adventures this a.m.!
Please thank Mr. Matz for his reports and devotion! Lou Ann, Pennsylvania

Thanks for the early report on our favorite horse Barbaro. I am at ease once I know that Barbaro has had a comfy night. As the days go so uneventfully, it is one day closer to recovering for this brave guy. Unfortunately, the weather in the northeast has been so rainy..wondering if Barbaro was able to get out and graze at all and if he misses Dr. Richardson. Hoping everyone is continuing to pour on the attention.
Hoping that a positive report emerges today about Lost in the Fog. We all want to read good news about all horses!!

Good morning all! Not usually here this early to get the update so was glad to see that it was already posted.

Barbaro, glad to see that you had another comfortable, restful night -- keep it up! Have a fantastic day today, I hope that the waether allows you to get outside and graze a little. Is today the day that Dr. R comes back? Can't quite remember the schedule. At any rate, he will be back VERY soon :) Keep that handsome chin up, keep doing what the docs and nurses tell you, enjoy your snacks, and keep smiling :) BIG horsie hugs, kisses, ear scratches, nose rubs and MUCH LOVE!!!!

Good Morning Bobby, I am so happy you had ACN. Must feel so nice to have Michael with you alot while Dr. Dean is away. I'm not sure if you were able to get outside but if you didn't, you will soon. I'll be on here alot today keeping check on you and Foggy. Enjoy the day, I love you.

Sweet Day Foggy, I am hoping for the best day for you, my prayers are with you and Bobby. You are such a warrior and I love you. I will be keeping a watchful eye on news of you today. I am sure we have worked our magic on you. You have a feisty day and shrink those nasty tumors.

Good morning everyone~

I'm usually a lurker but wanted to wish everyone well who is in Ernesto's path. Prayers for Foggy that we get some good news today, and my thoughts are with Bluegrass Cat too that he can be spared surgery.

How nice it was to come home yesterday and find a postcard from the folks at NBC thanking me for my contribution to the Barbaro Fund for Dr. Dean---with such beautiful pic of Bobby from the Derby, it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you again to everyone there at New Bolton (and Kennett Florist too!) for all that you do to make our boy's days more comfortable.

Happy Labor Day everyone---stay safe!

Good morning Barbaraholics!

ACN - YES! Keep em comin'! One after another, after another...

Alex - do you guys go out every morning, regardless of the weather? What about wintertime? Do you ever sleep? Be careful out there tomorrow if you are working, it's gonna be nasty.

I'm going to the races later today - my son's first XCountry meet of the season (his last since he's a senior). Hopefully we'll get it in before Ernesto starts the show here in Nazareth, PA. Kind of like endurance racing (except no jumps) and being the two-legged type! It's fun running around trying to catch the vantage points during the runs.

Waiting anxiously on the test results for LITF. I'm sure Alex will let us know before the rest of the world finds out!

Shrink tumors shrink!
Fuse bones fuse!

God bless Barbaro, make his bones mend strong make them stronger each day.

God bless Foggy, help to make him stronger to conquer the tumors.

Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

TGIF...hope everybody has a relaxing holiday weekend. Haven't turned on the Weather Channel to get the latest on Ernesto but am anticipating a wet weekend. If its not too stormy tomorrow, will get to Fair Hill just for a couple hours of peace. I'll know more tonight and will post. Still have to leave at 10 to help my son move some things - the joys of being a mother-in-law to the best kids in my universe...:) - then I get to keep packing my thngs.

ACN - Bobby, am glad you are on course with your recovery...someone was looking over Ruby. Such a beautiful story. Hope you can graze in between the rain - but I have a feeling you won't be bored. You probably have many people who want to keep you company at NBC. I would loooooove to be your scheduling secretary...if I can keep Senior VP's happy, you will be a piece of (carrot) cake. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Foggy,my Long Time Sun, am praying for positive medical news today. I'll be with "the boys" and will check in as soon as I get home late this afternoon.

Had a delightful conversation with Becky F in MD last night - will be meeting her on the 9th so we can compare Barbaro stories...

Take care, everybody.

SusanW: I relayed to my trainer regarding Eagle being your mascot - he was excited and said he would have to work extra hard! My trainer was the hot walker, then groom for Allen Jerkins. With Eagle's Pedigree, the trainer is predicting some good things for him and said he is training very well. I have been up several times to watch the training - 5 a.m. and have been able to see some wonderful horses training at Aqueduct as well. What a site. Dozens of class horses - even some talked about often on this site....amazing. I have some wonderful pictures.

Posted by: Deb G. at September 1, 2006 1:35 PM

SusanW: Excited? Under statement on this end. I can barely hold myself back and am anxiously awaiting the announcement that he will indeed race on 9/23 for the first time! I can barely stand it! Also went into partnership with "Snuff Box"...another good Pedigree which I hope proves itself.

Well, yes, look at his pedigree, he's got Storm Cat, Hoist the Flag and aside from some usual suspects, he's got a horse in his pedigree that always impressed me...Terlingua, she was a good one, I always liked that daughter of Big Red. Great breeding.
New York always has class, but they pay the purses to get the good ones.

When I was young I grew up in Louisiana, and lived just two blocks from the Southern Pacific railroad tracks we would go down to watch the Sunset Limited which would roar past, on its way to California. You could hear it coming several miles down the track. When we heard it coming, we would jump up and down and shout with glee, here comes the
"Big Train", here comes the "Big Train",

thats exactly what I thought when the Derby announcer was calling the race when he said, and here comes the unbeaten colt, Barbaro he has broken away on the outside, and has swept past the front runners, Keyed Entry and Sinister Minister, he has now has taken over the lead, Barbaro has now broken into the clear and is really pouring it on, he's running away from the field, its now all Barbaro, and he wins the Kentucky Derby by seven.

The only thing I could think of then the announcer was calling the race was my childhood days when we use to jump up and down and yell,

here comes the "Big Train". here comes the "Big Train".

I believe the "Big Train", Barbaro, would have won the triple crown and take his rightful place as one of the greatest throughbreeds of all times. He is an unworldly courageous horse who will forever be my "Big Train"

GOOD MORNING, ANNOINTED ONE!

I see that you had "Another Comfortable OK Night" last night! I wouldn't expect anything less from the 'fighter' that you are, the conqueror that you are, and the Champion of Heart that you are!

Just keep your 'mojo running', Bobby ... and keep moving forward, dear heart ... Believe in Miracles, Believe in Bobby!!!

I anticipate good news from Foggy's "camp" later today ... he's another 'fighter' who doesn't give up ... love you Foggy!!

Thank you, Alex, for all the wonderful racing information you're giving us about all of these great equine champions. Until I started reading some of these articles, I really wasn't aware of just how many great 3 year-olds there are this year ... it sure is a "Banner Year for Thoroughbreds!!" Again, thanks for the continual updates for all of us!!

Finally ... just a nice musical seque, if I may ...

One of the Barbaro videos that we all watched a few weeks ago had "You Are So Beautiful" sung by Kenny Rogers playing in the background. I'm sure that most of you remember it.

Well, I really wanted to find that song by Kenny and get it because I have always loved the song and now with the Bobby connection, it became even more special to me. I really didn't 'look' for the song and almost completely forgot about it.

UNTIL ... the other day I happened to be shopping in one of our "Ross" stores here in South Florida. They have a rack with a limited amount of CDs, DVDs, etc. at really reasonable prices. I was just 'browsing' through what was there and I noticed this CD call "Kenny Rogers, With Love" and it was very attractively priced at only $3.99. I picked it up to look at the track listing on the back and started reading from the top. I wasn't even thinking of "You Are So Beautiful To Me" at the time. And I read down the songlist, I came to #11 and my heart leapt!! There it was: "You Are So Beautiful". Needless to say, I grabbed the CD and bought it immediately.

By the way, the entire album is terrific with some great, great songs, so whether you can find it in Ross for $3.99 or elsewhere for a little more money, I highly recommend this album!

OK, Everyone! Have a Great Day ... I'm heading out, but I'll be back later on!!!!

LOVE TO EVERYONE AT BARBARO NATION!!!

Posted by: Linnie at September 1, 2006 2:49 PM

SusanW: Will definitely keep you posted! Eagle definitely has the better Pedigree (Affirmed too)and mom & dad are better as well, but Snuff is surprising folks around Aqueduct at a pretty sudden pace. Maybe we can get some Eagle's fans into the race for his first one! Would be AWESOME to have some of his fans there!!!

Try to find out if the HR rep in your area is also sponsoring HR503. Mine is Rep Susan Davis and she is co-sponsoring the bill. But I sent her a reminder anyway to vote.

I also wrote to Feinstein and Boxer and Feinstein wrot me back and specifically mentioned also sponsoring the "Virgie S. Arden American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act" (S. 1915).

Maribel: Regarding your question about BGC--I'm confident they're treating the leg--just opted not to do surgery. Since the bone was not displaced, it can probably heal quite well just by wrapping it properly in a splint or soft cast, and limiting his activity. Since there is always risk putting any animal under anesthesia, there was likely no need to take that chance since the fracture apparently didn't require plates or screws. Bad comparison, but my dog has a fracture we're treating the same way right now, although it's impossible to limit Seven's activity very much! :0)

Crossing my fingers for good weather for Funny Cide. I've always really liked him. Was driving home from VA on Belmont day that year (what year was that?) and had to pull over and get a hotel room for those few minutes to watch the race. Wasn't the track muddy that day at Belmont?

When I returned the key a few minutes later, the hotel manager asked why I was leaving. I answered that I only had to watch a horse race. He asked if I'd won. Nope, I said. He waived any room fee and I heard him say, Must've had a LOT of money on that race and lost.

I hadn't a penny invested monetarily but my heart was betting on Funny Cide.

Just wanted to add a footnote to my above post, it will be a few more hours before the test results are
in on "Lost in the Fog", so pray that the medical treatment has shrunk the tumors somewhat, I saw a piece on CNN last nite on cancer, a new procedure that alters your blood to add a trigger that attacks
tumors to have them self-destruct, without the need
of surgery. [Just remembered today is Sept 1st,its
my birthday]. Pray for our friend "Fog", did you ever hear the story how he came about having such an unusual name. When they called the horses in to
eat they had a signal that they would give and the horses would head for the barn. "Fog" who was still following his mother around, didn't show up,
they searched the entire foggy pasture and still
could not find this little colt. They by this time
were at wits end. All of a sudden the little lost colt appeared, as if by magic, when he walked out of the fog and was found. After that incident he
was all ways referred to as the colt who was "Lost in the Fog".

Some neat history: My horse "Way of an Eagle" is scheduled to run in the Belmont Futurity on 9/23, his great grandparents had the following winners in this exact race. I think this is pretty special!

Affirmed won in 1977
Secretariat won in 1972
Native Dancer won in 1952

Posted by: Deb G. at September 1, 2006 3:53 PM

SusanW: If he runs in The Champagne in October, well your ALYDAR won that race in 1977, same year Affirmed won The Futurity - wow, trivia!

Jazz: Yup, sounds like the stables around 5 a.m.! The horses can be pretty agressive and they have rules (which side of the barn to walk on, which side to stay away from, where to stand, where to sit). However, on race day, it is a more "friendly" atmosphere to be in the stable area. The rules exist so folks do NOT get injured or even killed by one of the horses....feel free to bring your mentor, I think it would be nice to have a bunch of fans for Eagle and I am certain the trainer and crew would love to have us there cheering on his efforts....he had a big smile when I relayed that Eagle was a new honorary mascot for the Philadelphia Eagles - a class act he is, trained by Allen Jerkins....

Good morning all,

Anne, thank you so much for the link to the amazing story of the horse who fell in the well! You're right, the Barbaro effect is evident! I hadn't seen it if it was a repost; but I decided to copy it and paste it for anyone who might not be able to find your post. It's quite a story!

RADCLIFF, Ky. — Radcliff Fire Chief Rick Ledford has performed plenty of rescues during his years on the job, everything from pulling children out of bannisters to people out of holes.

But nothing prepared Ledford for what he saw when he arrived at Charlie Ray’s property on Wednesday.

“She looks pretty good,” Ray said. “It’s been some kind of day.”

Other than a few scrapes and a small amount of blood on her legs and her muzzle, the horse appeared to be fine.

“She’s pretty much unscathed,” said veterinarian Chad Bailey. “Second to Barbaro, she’s the luckiest horse in the country.”

Poor Ruby! Glad to know she is going to be alright. She certainly had a guardian angel around her. Amazing!

Barbaro, So glad to hear of ACN. Have a wonderful day Sweetheart. TGIF and another day closer to seeing Dr. R. Lots of love to you Honey.

Alex, great updates as always. Have a wonderful weekend.

Concerning Native Dancer: As a huge Ruffian fan, I am always looking for more information....

Some pedigree researching brought up the fact that Ruffian's breeding, as well aS PRODUCING HER SPEED, also, tragically contributed to her demise. It said, essentially, that her sire, Reviewer, should never have been bred, because of his inherent unsoundness...thai came from his line from Native Dancer, who, unfortunately has been at the root of the trait.

Go to Google, and type History. It should take you to a site that has been researching TB breeding, and is dedecated to THE BETTERMENT of the breed. The breeding of the last 40 years has not been beneficial, even though there has been great speed and beauty.

### At work and trying to answer these posts - please forgive me if I forget anyone!

Jen: Yes, trainer wants him in the Futurity.

David: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Patti in Sherman Oaks: Great job!

Bobbie B: Thanks for the well wishes!

Otherlyn: Have not heard about that negative part of Native Dancer, however, in this great horse's memory and history, I offer the following:

Native Dancer (March 27, 1950 - November 16, 1967), nicknamed the Gray Ghost, was one of the most celebrated and accomplished thoroughbred racehorses in history, the first horse made famous through the medium of television.

Born at Scott Farm near Lexington, Kentucky, the gray colt was raised and trained at owner Alfred G. Vanderbilt Jr.'s Sagamore Farm in Glyndon, Maryland. A son of 1945 Preakness Stakes winner Polynesian by the mare Geisha, in his first season of racing Native Dancer won all nine races he entered, thrilling crowds with his come-from-behind running style. He was voted the Eclipse Award as Champion 2-year-old for 1952 with two of the three major polls naming him Horse of the Year.

In his three-year-old campaign, the undefeated racehorse received a great deal of media attention leading up to the 1953 Kentucky Derby. He won both the Gotham Mile and the prestigious Wood Memorial on route to racings most prestigious event but at the Derby, Native Dancer lost for the first time. Although jockey Eric Guerin was roundly criticised in the press, the horse had in fact been fouled twice during the race but recovered to barely lose to Dark Star.

Following his loss at Churchill Downs, Native Dancer quickly reestablished himself as one of the best horses in America. He won the Preakness Stakes, the Belmont Stakes and the Travers Stakes a feat accomplished until then only by Duke of Magenta, Man O' War, and Whirlaway, and by only two other horses since. Native Dancer never lost again that season and was named Champion Three Year Old Colt.

In 1954, Native Dancer won all three races he entered and was scheduled to be shipped to France to compete in the prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. However, he had to be retired as a result of a recurring foot injury with a record of 21 wins out of 22 lifetime races. Voted Horse of the Year for 1954, he appeared on the May 31st cover of Time Magazine.

At stud, Native Dancer was a highly successful sire, and is an ancestor of countless modern champions. One of his daughters, a mare named Natalma produced the great Northern Dancer. His tail-male descendants, particularly through his grandson Mr. Prospector, have come to dominate many U.S. Triple Crown races.

Native Dancer was inducted in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1963 and on November 16, 1967 he died and was buried at Sagamore Farm in Glyndon, Maryland.

In the Blood-Horse magazine ranking of the top 100 U.S. thoroughbred champions of the 20th Century, Native Dancer was ranked #7.

Posted by: Deb G. at September 1, 2006 5:12 PM

21 wins out of 22 lifetime races is AMAZING. I am proud to have Native Dancer and Northern Dancer in my two horses bloodlines....along with all the prestige of all the awards, I'd say great horse....

You could accuse several sire lines of being unsound. There are so many of them now that it is unfair to blame Native Dancer as the root of all of it. Jen

Otherlyn,
I attribute Ruffians' demise not so much to her Native Dancer lineage, but to the silly and foolish practice of "Match Races", with no other horses to offset the pace, you basically have a "speed duel" wire to wire.
Which is why, since Ruffian, there has not been and never will be one run again.

Posted by: Lynn in Austin, Texas at September 1, 2006 5:38 PM

Just curious Deb G. You mentioned at one time you were part of a sydicate group. How many "others" also own that horse you talk about?..

Native Dancer and Northern Dancer are GREAT horses, many horses running today also carry those legacies. From knowing horses myself, a good pedigree does not always guarentee a good race horse. Look at all those million dollar horses bought each year, but only a very small percent will ever earn that back or race. Look at the Green Monkey, 16 million, and still hasn't been able to run yet.. Will he earn that money that was paid for him?? Then look at horses like Smarty or Funnicide.. not "great" pedigrees but dang good racing horses!! Just at times a matter of luck and hope.

Breeding is Very complex at times!! Comes down to genes, etc to determine if a horse will be a good runner or a dud.

I truelly hope your horse does well.

Galloping: is cantering or any type of "gallop" that is controlled and not close to full speed

breezing: is a full speed gallop, racing pace, we also use the term "working"

jogging: also trotting, its a slower gate, front left and rear right hit the ground at one time (left diagonal), then the front right and rear left (right diagonal)

Deb G,

I only have had time to just skim through the posts today, but I have to say that I am so much enjoying your enthusiasm for your Horses. Proud Mama!!! You and many others that gather here like SusanW, ShelleyA, DebraL in WI and all the others, have dubunked my naieve notion that TB owners are all Wealthy Aristoracts. You inspired me to beleive that maybe one day I too can participate in a TB partnership.

I have Snuffbox and Way of an Eagle (VERY COOL NAME!!) in my virtual stable. I cant wait to see an ENTRY NOTIFICATION for them. IF you dont mind, Can I live vicariously through all of you! ?? LOL ! Everytime one of you guys's horses runs, I am feverishly checking on results and so hoping they are safe and do well. I guess I am in a "Barbaro" Partnership with all of you already.

Thanks so much for sharing your hopeful enthusiasm....it's making my day!!!

Kat: I am in a limited partnership with the general partner being the actual trainer, thus, he has a vested interest and I feel good about his training tactics. 5 others own Eagle and I am not sure how many others own Snuff Box.

Ok, I am going to stay POSITIVE and BEAMING about my horse's Pedigree and NOTHING will take me off that pedestal right about now! Pedigree horses have HIGH PRICE TAGS for a reason. I am well aware of other horses being claimed, etc...Lava Man is a perfect example, however, history shows the better Pedigree, the better race, the better money.....

My heart was broken when Landry got the boot - took me a couple of years to warm up to Jimmy - still not my favorite but he did a hell of a job for the Cowboys.

Leslie in MN: THANKS SO MUCH for your support. Gosh, Shelley A. where has she been?? Would like an update on Boxcar!

Leslie: You CAN be involved in horse racing. Check out "horse racing partnerships" on line. There are many of them. Read up on it, make a small investment and PLUG ON! It is very exciting and I have become more involved. NO, I am not a wealthy aristocrat (sigh), however, I have cancelled things in my life so I can invest and maintain my horses monthly. Small sacrifices and you can have that horse!

I thank Alex and the Tim Woolley crew for this site as I have been able to talk to and meet so many great folks with such a huge interest in horse racing, horses, heck, animals, and now football in general! I smile and smirk often reading these posts! Barbarotinis - we have to patent that drink! I look foward to all the Barbaro updates and am HOOKED on this site! I come and go and every time I come back - love the new posts and info.!

Alex,
I have been a long-time "lurker" and an occassional "poster"; it seems that with Dr. Dean's absence my neurotic self is surfacing. We had become accustomed to updates that included comments on Barbaro's appetite, vital signs, grazing, hoof healing, baths, treats, and "antics" in general. Since Dr. Dean has been on vacation the information has been limited to ACN.... Please tell me if that's because the other information constitutes "medical" updates and NBC will not provide those in Dr. Dean's absence?? Otherwise I can't help but be concerned that there's something else happening.... (Yes, I am a worrier, and admittedly obsessed with Barbaro's well being, as are many posters to this site)... you have been incredibly patient with all of us. Thanks so much for keeping us informed.

Deb G,

How terrific that you (may) have a couple of yours running in September. I hope they go well and safely.

I loved your post about Native Dancer. You may know that his son Northern Dancer was Canadian, and I followed his every hoofprint when I was young. I believe Northern Dancer has sired more Breeders' Cup winners than any other horse in history. When he died, my entire country mourned.

I just discovered that 'my' new sponsorship horse, Cool Storm, has both Northern Dancer and Secretariat in his pedigree, though he's certainly not a champion. I've been away from horses and racing for a long time, and it's such a thrill to find that I now have a connection with the Dancer through Cool Storm. http://www.trfinc.org/sponsor/avail.php?id=3

Colour me happy!
______________

Thanks, Alex, for ACN on Barbaro. Waiting, hoping for good news on LITFog.

Posted by: Mirth at September 1, 2006 6:35 PM

Native Dancer has long been on my list of favorites. He was Beautiful and so fast. And a true treasure. But those 22 races that he ran were run at a time when most horses of his class were able to run 40 to 50.

We have not had breeding for soundness for too long. Knowing this, we must be extra careful to give the TB racers of today necessary consideration for inbred leg and bone fragility.
....Or better yet...start breeding, not so much for speed but for SOUNDNESS...introduce new blood. There are studies being done, but the industry has blinders on in this race.

So glad all is well one more day for our boy Barbaro. Without the updates here, I don't know what I'd do. Still hoping for the best re LITF - we haven't heard yet, have we? I am so grateful that his people are of the same ilk as Barbaro's people.

Hope everybody in the storm's way is holding up OK. So far, so good, right?

I rec'd this from a barn friend this morning, re the mother of someone in one of her dog groups. Please email me potlucky@sbcglobal.net if you can help with an adoptive home for this poor soul. THANK YOU. (I can't take him because my eldest cat, Junebug, 16, hates dogs.)

Dear ______,
My mother is in the hospital now. When her condition improves, she will be moved to a nursing home. As a result, she will have to put her yellow lab, Chance, up for adoption. She got Chance about 3 years ago to cheer up my dad when he was deteriorating. Now my dad is gone, and Chance is too much for my mother to handle. He is an intelligent, loving dog who does have separation anxiety. However, we have left him alone in the house for over four hours with no problem. He just doesn't like to be crated. Currently, he is vacationing at LouBelle's Kennel, but he needs a home. Could you please give a shout out to your members to see if anyone knows a good family who would like to adopt Chance?
Thank you so much. (signature of sender omitted)

Thanks for the well wishes!

Becky,

Here's the story........it's quite long...

Leaning Into Love
By Cynthia B. Astle

Each week as I prepare the news briefs for UMNeXus, I test the selections against certain criteria – cultural, geographic and theological diversity, uniqueness, magnitude, primacy (as in “the first” of something) and other qualities taught in Journalism 101. Not all of these goals can be met every week, although I think after five months NeXus is improving steadily.

One criterion, however, comes not from journalism, but from the perspective of faith: Where are examples of the selfless love that Jesus taught as the core of discipleship? In other words, where is the good news of the Gospel this week?

The past 10 days, for me at least, this question has been answered not by a church story, but by a sports tale starring Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro and his Peruvian-born jockey, Edgar Prado.

Barbaro was widely favored to win horse racing’s Triple Crown: the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes. When the Preakness arrived May 20, Barbaro was so full of energy that he broke early from the gate and had to be brought back. The horse wanted nothing more than to run.

However, an irony of thoroughbreds is that their awesome power and speed rest on four fragile legs. Barely 75 yards into the race, Barbaro apparently stepped wrong on the Pimlico Race Course and shattered the bones in his right hind ankle.

When he realized the horse was injured, Prado used all his skill and strength to bring the mighty animal to a stop. Then, in an act that few brawny men would dare, the hundred-pound jockey leaped off Barbaro’s back and leaned against the thousand-pound horse to keep him from falling. Prado’s action probably saved Barbaro’s life, New York Times photographer William Rhoden reported on its web site.

The typically stoic Prado later acknowleged to national media that in the two days after the Preakness, all he did was weep for Barbaro, whose injury ended the horse’s career and may yet claim his life. Barbaro’s owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, are known for doing right by their horses, often paying thousands to rehabilitate horses that will never race again, because “we’re their keepers,” as Roy Jackson put it.

“We’re their keepers.” That’s the way of love – a sense of responsibility for another life, however banged up it might be – that we easily forget. It’s what the Rev. Chester Jones, top executive of the General Commission on Religion and Race, means in his recent commentary on Bishop Janice Riggle Huie, the newly installed president of the United Methodist Council of Bishops with whom he served in Arkansas: “Without apology, she used the word ‘holiness’ -- loving God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and loving our neighbor as ourselves.”

I think that’s what has so captured me in the image of Edgar Prado leaning against the injured Barbaro: The moment of loving, the embrace that shares the pain, putting oneself between the beloved and injury, risking safety, even death. It is this love we see in Jesus Christ.

Whatever happens to Barbaro, Prado’s career will progress. As one of racing’s leading jockeys, he’ll earn top dollar for himself and his horses’ trainers and owners. But his actions in Barbaro’s tragedy have shown that Prado’s true worth as a human being lies not in his ability to win races, but in his ability to love one of God’s creatures more than a high-stakes purse.

As with Barbaro, the future of The United Methodist Church looks uncertain. We blame many causes: our diverse theologies, our debates over scriptural authority, our church marketing, our politics, our “worship wars,” or our fights over the inclusion of LGBT people. We hold on to outmoded ways of thinking and doing, forgetting one of Jesus’ most potent parables, that a seed must die in order to bring new life.

Perhaps, in the end, we dwindle because we aren’t where the people are, because we aren’t putting ourselves between them and danger, doing what we can to keep away more of life’s injuries. All of us devoted to John Wesley’s theology that God is love share a hope that Methodism again will become a movement. Perhaps a first move might be to emulate Edgar Prado, Barbaro’s faithful jockey: We could lean into love, and risk whatever happens.

Posted by: Anne at September 1, 2006 6:45 PM

Otherlyn: Please don't take this the wrong way, but are you a breeder? horse person? Sorry, but Native Dancer was an incredible horse and to win 21 out of 22 races and all the awards he won is point blank AMAZING. Reading his history and notable mentiions and awards, I am sure the industry, bloodhorse, etc..was not WRONG with how they felt about him. He was, indeed, a GREAT horse. Perhaps other horses ran 40 - 50 races, but did they even win one or two of ten of them??? That would be nearly a 100% statistic of races won to ran....meaning 40 - 50, they would have had to win 39 or 49.... Native Dancers stats speak volumes for his superiority....

SusanW--my last (and best memories of a match race was from the summer of 1988 when two "regional champions" squared off at Aksarben in a match race--Explosive Girl and Who Doctor Who--the mile 70 was fair with trainer Donnie Von Hemel's Explosive Girl handling distances better, and trainer Herb Riecken's Who Doctor Who an accomplished 6f sprinter. It was an exciting race with Girl leading much of the race until The Doctor made his patented move around the turn for home and drew off. Both of these champion athletes always raced with a lot of heart, and that day was no different. The Match Race drew attention throughout the country as well as the Cornhusker Handicap that day. Bill Mott and Julie Krone won the 'husker cap that day but was anticlimatic for over 20,000 in attendance, they came to see the Match Race.

I know that someone has likely already asked this question - but I can't seem to find the answer. I just rewatched the CBS video - the hair loss/scaring on Barbaro's left hip? I assume it is from the sling??? It just seems a little more intense than sling usage in the footage.

Last weekend - at 4pm Pacific - while everyone was holding vigil for Barbaro, I was driving by Bay Meadows. I just can't imagine folks being okay with some stranger "just dropping by" but I sent Lost in the Fog a ton of prayers and energy - as well as Barbaro... I'm just so close - I wish I could do something for LITF........ at least leave something for him.... anyone know if that would be welcome there??? I'm only a half hour from Bay Meadows...

Much love to Barbaro and all other horses....

Lost in the Fog's condition unchanged
By CHUCK DYBDAL
Results from Thursday's examination of Eclipse sprint champion Lost in the Fog revealed little change in his condition, with three cancerous tumors still present.
The tumors had been discovered in Lost in the Fog two weeks earlier in an examination at the University of California-Davis after he had been sent there with a suspected case of colic.

Veterinarians from UC Davis gave Lost in the Fog an ultrasound scan and did blood work on him Thursday at the equine hospital at Golden Gate Fields.

Lost in the Fog had been receiving dexamethasone, a hormone, in hopes of reducing the size of the tumors.

C'mon Maniacs!

We know we have great healing power here. Without losing sight of our goals for Barbaro, we MUST focus a great deal of our collective healing energy toward Mr. Foggy.

God Bless LITF and may his tumours quickly realise there is no place for them in this beautiful horse's body.

not to get too new agey, but we know we have some healing power here.

Posted by: mish ~ future vet tech at September 1, 2006 8:16 PM

At first when I read the update I was admittedly a little disappointed - however, after thinking about it, he's only been on medicine about two weeks - and maybe while it hasn't shrunk them yet, it is quite possible it has prevented them from growing and stopped it from progressing. We need to keep praying and keep optimistic - remember, Barbaro has had some days where it didn't look so good but now look at him - he's able to go outside and graze now.

We have to stay positive and trust that both he and Barbaro are getting the best care (as we know - their doctors are great :) ) and are in God's healing hands. Of course we'd like to have seen the tumors shrunk a lot so far, but he's still a happy horse as we have heard and he has his appetite and is feisty and everything. And they said as long as he is in no pain and happy and comfortable they are going to do the best they can for him. We just have to take comfort in that.

Thoughts prayers and love to both Barbaro and Fog - and to those we have lost and those around them all.

Love, Light and Protection for Bobby

Posted by: Mary S at September 1, 2006 8:16 PM

I will accept "status quo" as a good thing rather than bad. Things are no worse and we MUST continue to see the cup as half full rather than half empty.

LITF, you will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Be strong and enjoy all of the treats that you are getting. Miracles do happen and I believe that yours is on it's way in the form of those tumors beginning to shrink. You can prevail.

Posted by: TLC (Laura) at September 1, 2006 8:18 PM

Regardless of tumor size - appearances are not always as they seem. Remember appearances for Bobby on 7/13? Only a few weeks later we have "grazing in the grass". Appearances change. Jus keep the faith! The Fog is in God's very capable hands.

Some of the scarring on the hip is due to the fact that they took some bone from Barbaro's hip to use as graft material in repairing the fractures.

Posted by: Jennie (Kentucky) at September 1, 2006 8:21 PM

With the status quo statement I'm hoping they will continue with the present drug schedule. Sounds like more time is needed for the drugs to start doing their job.

Praying like made for Foggy!!

Tons of love to our Barbaro.

Posted by: Kathy J. - Hilton Head Island, SC at September 1, 2006 8:23 PM

re: status quo not a bad thing....

I agree. The physics of it is simple. The tumor has to cease growing before it begins to shrink. Perhaps this small window of treatment has ceased the growth, but not enough time for us to see remission.

Love to Fog. Peace to family, particularly Pasqual, the happiest, proudest man to ever lead a horse.

Posted by: Terry Lilly at September 1, 2006 8:23 PM

I agree, I'll take status quo...Ryan said it well, after two weeks, at least he's not worse and his appetite is good and he's feisty. He is in God's hands and God will take good care of him, but it will be on His timetable. We just need to keep praying and know that God will help him...

Thanks for the update..

Just read about LITF's test results. I would have thought since tests had been scheduled from two weeks of beginning treatment, then docs thought shrinkage would have taken place by now? But....at same time, it's a good sign they haven't grown so maybe that's what they were looking for?

It's a disappointment, but like BOBBIE B and some of you have said, maybe the chemo needs more time to work. It's a DARN good sign the tumors haven't grown.

By his words, Mr. Gilchrist sounds disheartened. That is quite understandable, but it looks like they have to tough it out... like Barbaro's loved ones did. It's very hard..

Let's pray Fog's condition stays stable and he continues to eat and carry on normally.

Let's not give up. He just needs more of everything, including our prayers and positive energy..

Don't they usually say any medication takes 2 weeks to kick in? So maybe that's the case with Fog. I'm thinking positively and feeling sure that with time and all the love and healing energy being sent your way, things will begin to turn around.

Shrink, tumors, shrink!

Bobby, you stay dry, OK? No trotting through the wet grass, just nosh on your carrots and fuse your bones and grow that hoof, OK? Bath time tomorrow :) And send a horsey prayer to your bro Fog, please...

Posted by: Jane in CT at September 1, 2006 10:15 PM

Michael and Peter's dedication to their boy is heart warming. It's really just wonderful.

Hang in there Barbaro. Before you know it, the sun will be shining again and those pesky flies will be swarming around you (ok, annoying you) as you graze with a warm breeze blowing around you. Please be patient and you'll be outside before you know it. You need to stay inside, like the rest of us, until the weather clears up. Do you enjoy watching tennis? Some great matches on and one of players, Andre Agassi, reminds me of you- he is a fighter!!

Hoof, please grow for Barbaro!!
Tumors, please shrink for his friend, Lost in the Fog!

Daphne - Agassi has been amazing hasn't he! Just like the good ole days - he could pull this off - a last win at the US Open - how great would that be.

Fighter - oh yes he is - perhaps Barbaro should be watching tennis - he would learn alot about fighting to win!!!

I am so glad to see Barbaro still doing so well. I hope he doesn't miss Dr. R. too much.

Alex, thanks for the updates on Miraculous Miss, Giacomo, LITF and Funny Cide.

I watched Miraculous Miss have that dreadful mishap at the starting gate...Glad she wasn't injured.

I can't wait until Funny Cide and Giacomo retire. I don't want them to get hurt.

You know I am a Giacomo cheerleader also. (smiles)

RE: updates

When Michael is pleased with Bobby, I grin like an idiot!! What is our boy doing on this long weekend? It sounds like trips outside won't be possible for a few days, poor baby.

Thank you, Alex and Alie, for your wonderful updates, especially on this holiday weekend.

As for Fog--his condition has not worsened. That is very good news. There is still hope. He hasn't been on the meds for very long and it can take time for the meds to affect the tumors.

Posted by: Susan E. at September 1, 2006 10:31 PM

So disappointed to read that Lost in the Fog's condition has not changed for the better. I am sure they are doing everything possible to give this great horse a chance, and hope they can keep up the faith.
Always glad to read about the latest person seeing our Barbaro and finding him doing well. Hope he is not too bored being indoors with the storm coming this weekend. I guess he has gotten adjsuted to being in the stall so much anyway, but hope our guy stays content!

Chemotherapy Next for Champ Lost in the Fog

Lost in the Fog, champion sprinter of 2005, will begin chemotherapy treatments for his cancer at the University of California at Davis next week, trainer Greg Gilchrist said Sept. 1. The process could last for as long as nine months.

Gilchrist, along with owner Harry Aleo, were disappointed to learn earlier in the day that Lost in the Fog's tumors had not shrunk in size since the horse began treatment with injections of the corticosteroid Dexamethasone 10 days ago.

Doctors came down from the university Thursday to do a scan," he said. "Nothing had changed. Nothing had gotten any smaller. Nothing had gotten any larger."

Aleo and Gilchrist made the decision on chemotherapy on the advice of Dr. Gary Magdesian, UCD's chief of equine medicine. He told them that it was unlikely that Lost in the Fog would derive any benefit from further use of the steroid, which if effective enough on Lost in the Fog's football-sized tumors, could have made surgery a possibility.

"We've come to another cross in the road. They feel that we were doing isn't really helping that much," Gilchrist said. "He could have two, three, four months (to live) with what we are doing right now. There are always exceptions, of course, when you are dealing with something like this. But with chemotherapy it could be as much as two years."

The treatment at UC Davis would consist of up to six treatments, if they prove successful, six weeks apart.

Because cancer in horses is considered rare, Gilchrist said, the treatment "is pretty experimental." He said that if midway through the process, it is determined that chemotherapy isn't helping, they would stop.

"Horses don't suffer the same side effects (from chemotherapy) that people do," he said. "With horses, they pretty much get over it in a day and move on."

Gilchrist said he takes Lost in the Fog out of his stall every morning for about 30 minutes to graze, and for about 30 minutes in the evening when he has time. They often walk to a spot where the popular colt with the odd ball blaze can scan the track.

"You can tell he knows where he's at because he kind of picks his head up," the trainer said.

Oh I am sad to read this about LITF. I am sure his vets know the best course of action, but it just sounds like they have given up on getting rid of the cancer altogether. However...at least they are continuing to treat his cancer. Maybe there will be a miracle...oh please let there be a miracle. What a special guy he is.

Thanks for the update on Fog. I'll echo what the last writer (at this writing) said. 'it can take time'. I mean, like, YEAH. Leave it to trainers of race horses to expect 'instantaneous'! Fog's in quite a Fight, I'd say, and I hope they'll all go the [reasonable] distance with this. He has demonstrated prodigious strenth in his racing career, especially considering the load he's been carrying, and this horse, like Barbaro, has a lot to teach us. Quite remarkable that 'there's been no change'. Tumors of the size described are horribly aggressive, and 'no change', at this point, can be considered, ironically, a step in the right direction. Best wishes, †KAWilson

I was hoping that they would allow the steroid treatments for a little while longer, but I guess the docs said there is just no chance. So at least they have this option.

I sent Gilchrist an email asking him to be patient for 2 more weeks - that since the tumors hadn't gotten bigger that 2 more weeks could help to shrink them.

I'm no doctor but it just seems logical that it would take longer than 2 weeks - in two weeks the meds are just starting to run through his system -and two weeks to start doing what its suppose to. Just my opinion.

From what I have read on the UC Davis web site, this steroid only keeps the cancer from getting worse, it is not doing anything to shrink it.

Okay, so ONE treatment a week for six weeks, and this blew me away - that horses don't suffer the same side effects from chemo that people do. I can't believe it, but that is crucial. I immediately thought Fog would get very sick like people do, and spiral downward. This is extremely good news, and he has a fighting chance.

Definitely, there is no reason to surrender now. It's just going to take more time.

Isn't ALIE just adorable...She brought our royal boy "evening carrots."

Posted by: Christine at September 1, 2006 11:03 PM

Well, they say where there is life, there is hope! To me, the fact that the tumors have not increased in size is a note of hope, being that it was characterized as an aggressive type of cancer. I'm glad that they are going the extra mile to give LITF chemotherapy. And of course, I'm still praying that those tumors will shrink or he will go into remission.

Keep strong, Foggy! We're all in your corner

Does anybody have the email addy of Greg Gilchrist or Harry Aleo? I just want to thank them for doing this for Foggy.

Hello Otherlyn, I noticed your post on Native Dancer, and of course, (for reasons long ago mentioned) he's a tremendous favorite of mine -and, I think (apparently, others have, too) an extraordinary and eminently breeding-worthy sire-practically, a progenitor, at this point! re 'soundness' in this line -this is a HUGE issue at this time, and being very busy, myself, at this moment, I'm going to have to almost leave it there for now. Just consider, for a moment, what would be going on if, say, one of science's most hallowed tenets (i.e. 'natural selection', or as we've come to think of it, 'survival of the fittest') were effectively 'turned on its head', at a particular point in history, such that, the fittest were at a distinct DISADVANTAGE for survival; that in fact, in many ways, the *fittest* were actually targeted. In some ways, that is what is going on with the horse disease, laminitis, which might as well be called, horse 'gout'. Our environment -and probably for the last many years- literally CANNOT support the oxygen and calcium needs of our biggest and best animals. This is becoming dramatically clear at present...such that, I believe, we'll soon have to change the word, 'fittest' in that old 'survival' ditty we're so fond of, to something more like 'most favorably aspected'! Actually, these horses are *teaching* Quite a Bit at present. In a way, Barbaro is teaching the same Advanced and Accelerated Course, Fog is...Best wishes, †KAWilson

*** Lost in the Fog Update -- Sept. 1, 2006
Veterinary specialists Gary Magdesian, Larry Galuppo, Mary Whitcomb, Suzanne Brenner and David Wilson traveled to Golden Gate Fields near San Francisco on Thursday, Aug. 31, to examine Lost in the Fog and repeat the abdominal ultrasound examination in conjunction with Don Smith, the horse's veterinarian, who was present for the entire procedure.

Lost in the Fog was very bright, alert, comfortable, eating well, and physically looked very good and in good spirits. He has not shown any signs of abdominal discomfort this week. The tumor in his spleen and the second tumor high in the abdomen between his kidneys and below his spinal column have not changed in size during the past two weeks, and no new tumors were detected in the spleen or liver or other abdominal or thoracic organs.

These findings indicate that the dexamathasone treatment has controlled the previously rapid growth of the tumors but has not caused them to shrink.

The location and size of the tumor high in the abdomen precludes the possibility that it can be removed surgically; however, chemotherapy remains an option, with the goal of inducing remission of the tumor masses.

Lost in the Fog's trainer, Greg Gilchrist, and Dr. Smith are currently weighing the potential benefits of chemotherapy against potential adverse side effects and will engage in further discussions with UC Davis veterinarians Gary Magdesian and Alain Theon before making a final decision regarding whether to embark on chemotherapy.

Jo, no I think they said there's no hope for a cure. But there is hope for a remission, which would give Fog a chance for several more good years.

And as J. CARSON optimistically pointed out, we don't know what can happen in two years, ie, maybe there will be a cure by that time. It's buying time...

Deb G: Sorry it took so long to reply to your previous post.

I am in no way meaning to dis or deminish the Great NATIVE DANCER. I am only sharing some information that I ran across.

The fact of the 22 races he ran, as opposed to the usual and customary 40 to 50 starts for TB racers of that time, certainly attests to the care and wisdom of his people. Thank God that they DIDN'T race him more. What a tragedy it would have been had he had a disabling, or fatal breakdown.

I have an extreme interest in the reason for and prevention of TB breakdowns. This manifested primarily because of BARBARO. I have always loved horses, and have had more than just a passing interest in TB history and pedigrees for many years.

I offered the source of my posted info offering for anyone who might be interested in checking into it.

Speaking as one from outside the racing industry, I hope that my research, opinions and concerns will be not be viewed as any less valuable than the opinions of anyone who is involved with it on a daily basis.

Facts are facts. The fragility of today's racers is a true problem. It seems that horse people would welcome an explaination and possible beginning of a solution to what is plaguing our beloved beauties. ( I say "our" because I love them too.)

IF some celebrated sires, and dams have passed on a plague that has taken a half century to manifest, then, it seems that it would be a good thing to take steps to reverse the problem. If by knowing that a horse has a possible predisposition to breakdown, because of genetics, then precautions can be prepared, and taken to best insure its safety.

It's a fresh look and different perspective on at something that LOOKS really great on a horse's pedigree, but what might doom him to a life of pain or early demise.

It is not good to pretend that the elephant is NOT in the room.

Here is where I found the NATIVE DANCER/RUFFIAN pedigree/genetic falts information. Deb, as a horse person, please take it for what it's worth. It IS very interesting, albeit just too sad, because of all of the horses bred, raced, and who may be passing it on. Breeding the Best to the Best is not always about racing records and speed. What looks good on paper is sometimes only good for the paper.

http://www.reines-de-course.com/ruffian.htm

Deb, please don't be mad at me.

ALEX, sorry for this long post. I beg your indulgience in my explaining myself to Deb. I will refrain and go to the message boards.

I've never posted here before, but wondered if, having read the UCDavis article below, we could help in setting up a fund for the Fog, similar to Barbaro's fund at New Bolton?
"Despite the many advances Dr. Theon and his colleagues have made in the treatment of tumors in horses in recent years, Lost in the Fog's condition highlights the tremendous need for further research and funding in this important area. " Any suggestions anyone?

Otherlyn: No worries. I am not mad, and will take it as a "piece of info., to put in the puzzle of breakdown history". Not sure why you picked Native Dancer to research though - out of ALL the horses in history. I am sure, if you go through the entire horse racing history, there will be breakdown and predispositions to several variant characteristics (ie soundness, strength, speed, lack of speed, etc...the list goes on). I understand your willingness to offer the info., however, picking Native Dancer and knowing the horse is in my, as well as others on this board's bloodline, is a "slap in the face" to the positive vibes we carry toward our horses. I am certain Barbaro's folks or the people on this board would NEVER care to hear something negative in Barbaro's Pedigree or any Pedigree.

Again, your continued support and interest in breakdowns is appreciated, however, since you took this on since Barbaro's breakdown, there are many horses to follow breakdowns in Pedigree - Native Dancer was not a good one to pick as he was an AMAZING horse and highly honored and awarded, horse of the year, etc...again, don't take this the wrong way, but if someone posted a basic "HIGH" on their Pedigree and horse they own, I certainly would not research to see if it carries "bad blood or pedigree history" so that I may attempt to relay to the happy owner that their horse has a bad history to it....

I just chose to stay on route to the positive and the positive side of horse racing involving Pedigree and leave that to Breeders. Horse slaughter needs more attention than Pedigree faults. If Pedigree is causing so many breakdowns, then so be it and let's start another forum on fighting that. I just feel Native Dancer was AWESOME and history proves that....you can't always believe what you read in the media. If we did, Barbaro would be DEAD by now....

Whew, Thanks, Deb G...

Actually, I didn't choose NATIVE DANCER, I was interested in RUFFIAN (My favorite TB of all time), and found that it had a lot to say about NATIVE DANCER, and REVIEWER, that I had not previously known or had even considered. Indeed, it just might be a crucial puzzle piece.

HERE IS MY STORY ON HOW I CAME TO FALL IN LOVE WITH BARBARO AND DEPEND ON THIS SITE FOR HIS DAILY UPDATES EVER SINCE: (I wrote this for my blog after the Preakness)

Confessions of an irrational thinker who loves a horse...May 22, 2006--

I woke up Saturday morning with the usual glee that I have the morning of a Triple Crown race. I plan my day around ESPN coverage. I get queasy during the parade to the gates. The second Barbaro kicked his gate open thinking the race had started, I got a horrible sinking feeling. Could he recover from this confusion and get his head back on straight. They brought him back around and reloaded him in the gate. Several seconds passed and the gates opened...they were off. When the announcer quickly said "Prado has pulled Barbaro up!"... I know enough to understand what that means and became a wailing mess. I couldn't see through my tears, I was curled up in a fetal position with sobs wracking my entire body. This continued for most of the night. I went to church Sunday without any sleep and for the sole purpose of filling out a prayer request card. I didn't care that those cards were mostly used for humans. After church and lunch, the thought of going back to the house and pacing while searching for morsels of information about Barbaro seemed unbearable, so we drove around and stopped at a car dealership..."Just to look". Scott (my husband) was trying to get my mind off of things, and I was trying to fill this giant hole in my heart. After walking around the lot, I came across an SUV that was pretty and I asked what color it was. The salesman who was new, went inside and came out with the key and said he thought the color was called 'Saddle'. With the frame of mind I was in, this seemed like a sign from Above. What are the odds? I thought...and could this one single thing be solely responsible for the outcome of Barbaro's surgery? I had to at least make an offer. I now have a new SUV. There should be a rule against that sort of thing. No one should be able to write a check for thousands of dollars if they have cried themselves to sleep the night before. On the bright side...the headlines today have been as follows:

Barbaro 'bright and frisky' following surgery.
Barbaro 'eating and flirting with the mares' post-surgery.
Barbaro 'came out of surgery and practically jogged back to the stall'.

Because of this...I have zero buyer's remorse.

Otherlyn: There are so many opinions and media reports about so many things, careful in the research, it will drive you batty!

Very neat that you are researching it all though. Your efforts might assist in all the breakdowns lately. For instance, the breakdowns at Arlington - is it the track, something under the dirt, hardpacked, gravity pulling leaving so many broken legs following racing? or could it be a coincidence of past breeding making legs more fragile.....I am not even sure, but they might have research teams on this kind of stuff - I vote for you to be on it or start one!!

I pray you are happy and that your dreams are filled with romps through green fields and plenty of delicious carrot tops.

My heart, too, is with Lost in the Fog during this most trying time for him and for his people. Like you, he is a winner, and he deserves all the tender loving care he can get.

I wish for you both peace and happiness, and lots of hands and backsides to nip at.

Otherlyn,

That's a fascinating article. I want to read it more closely tomorrow.

Deb G,

I don't think that Otherlyn is at odds with you. Native Dancer WAS a fabulous horse, and to suggest there is a genetic flaw (recessive, I presume?) doesn't take anything away from his glory at all.

Seems to me that future Thoroughbreds could benefit from genetics research all over the map. But what do I know? I just sponsor one. :-)

Now would you guys please kiss and make up. xoxox

Wow. what news on Lost in the Fog. As I am finishing up my own round of chemo, my heart goes out to LITF as he will be starting his. I pray that he tolerates it well and experiences less side effects than us "humans" do. If it works, he will set the standard for treatment for other horses that come down with this type of cancer. LITF even though you are just a horse, I am adding you to my cancer support groups prayer chain. You need all the support and prayers you can get during this time. I understand what you will be going through

Ahh Barbaro, another good day for you, and glad that Peter and Mike are taking you out and being there for you. As far as HR503 goes, yes, the Congress votes first and then they forward it to the Senate if it is approved in the House. But it is good we wrote to the Senators and that we keep the messages coming. I read somewhere on this website that the vote may be postponed from Sept. 7 to the 14th??

Posted by: Deb G. at September 2, 2006 12:48 AM

Oh dear God ... I don't know what to say ....

But I heed these words from Greg Gilchrist:

"It would have to be a miracle for Lost in the Fog to be cured," Gilchrist said. "This is something that puts it into remission and allows him to go on."

and

"We've come to another cross in the road. They feel that we were doing isn't really helping that much," Gilchrist said. "He could have two, three, four months (to live) with what we are doing right now. There are always exceptions, of course, when you are dealing with something like this. But with chemotherapy it could be as much as two years."

TWO YEARS!! God Only Knows what can happen in TWO YEARS!!

Greg's words ... "IT WOULD HAVE TO BE A MIRACLE!!!"

Well, we all know that MIRACLES HAPPEN WHEN WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER!!

And The Barbaro Beat Goes On! I believe with all of my heart and soul that the choices that are being made for Foggy have EVERYTHING to do with the fact that NO ONE gave up on Barbaro! And Greg was inspired by this and he sees how Bobby is being healed... Thank God that Greg Gilchrist is a spiritual being that also BELIEVES!! But anyone with a name such as GilCHRIST HAS TO BE A BELIEVER!!

HEAL ON, FOGGY ... YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN AT LEAST 2 YEARS ... AND IT WILL BE MORE AND MORE AND MORE AND MORE BECAUSE YOUR SPIRIT WILL NOT BE DENIED!!!

Pardon me for saying this, people, but I just KNEW that the news would be encouraging and uplifting ... I just KNEW IT! I sense the fighting spirit of this 'being' who descends from Secretariat, and that was enough for me!!

AND THE BEAT GOES ON AND ON AND ON ... AND THE CONNECTION BETWEEN BOBBY AND FOGGY IS INEXTRICABLY BONDED ...

THERE IS NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER IN MY MIND OR HEART OR SOUL THAT BOBBY'S LEGACY FAR, FAR TRANSCENDS THE MORTAL AND THE EARTHLY ... SOMEHOW, SOME WAY HE HAS PROJECTED HIS WILL, HIS SPIRIT, HIS ESSENCE AND HIS LOVE TOWARD FOGGY AND HIS CONNECTIONS ... AND THEY, JUST LIKE THE JACKSONS AND BOBBY'S CONNECTIONS, WILL NEVER GIVE UP AND WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

Believe in Bobby
Believe in Foggy
BELIEVE IN MIRACLES THAT HAVE THE MOST FAR-REACHING EFFECTS THAT WE CAN EVER, EVER IMAGINE!!

I AM IN AWE OF THESE TWO GALLANT CHAMPIONS WHO REFUSE TO GIVE UP ... WHO REFUSE TO GIVE UP!!

My heart is filled with love and admiration and respect and tears of joy at this very moment. I know I have said a lot, but words are so meaningless right now ...

"Be Still and Know I Am" ... the mantra of God's Miracles!!

Concerning your question about starting a fund for LOST IN THE FOG.

Personally, I can't answer your question. However, there are several people here who might be able to help you, but they just might not be here right now.

You might try addressing the question to ALEX...and/or if you do not get a reply tonight, then try again tomorrow.

I appreciate the research. Maybe someday, they will come up with Superhorse! Breaks, accidents, death, it has been part of the horse racing industry for many many years. Yes, we could use the research to benefit from it all. Just being protective of my lil pony!!

Have read the reports on "Fog" being given Chemotherapy, would suggest that Gilchrist
get in touch with his new method of cancer
tumor treatment that would take a sample of
Fogs blood, modify it, put it back in, and the modified blood seeks out the tumors and destroys
them. I realize this is a long shot, but its better
than him being put down. Here is the article on the treatment.

Scientists 'train' cells to fight skin cancer
Treatment hailed as 'proof' gene therapy works

By JEFF NESMITH
COX NEWS SERVICE

WASHINGTON -- Government scientists revealed Thursday that they had successfully used genetic engineering to "train" the white blood cells of two melanoma patients to attack and destroy the cancer.

The experiment failed to help 15 other melanoma patients.

However, it represents a "proof of principle" that gene therapy can be used to successfully treat cancer, other scientists said.

Mark Origer, 53, was successfully treated for melanoma using genetic engineering.

Plans are under way to expand the experiment with efforts to treat breast and lung cancer, said Dr. Steven Rosenberg, the National Cancer Institute researcher who directed the melanoma experiment.

By inserting a gene that enabled the white cells to recognize melanoma, the NCI scientists caused the cells, known as lymphocytes, to swarm through the bodies of two men, finding cancer cells and destroying them.

The two patients have been cancer-free for nearly two years, even though the cancer had metastasized throughout their bodies when the treatments were begun.

The experiment represents a personal victory for Rosenberg, a surgeon and biophysicist who has spent nearly two decades at NCI searching for a way to turn the human immune system against cancer.

If the success rate can be increased and applied to other types of cancer, the use of genetically modified lymphocytes would be an entirely new approach to treating the disease.

"This may be the most important paper I have ever written," said Rosenberg, whose team describes the new treatment today in the journal Science.

He said lymphocytes -- sometimes called "killer cells" because they attach themselves to diseased cells and destroy them -- normally do not attack cancer because the body does not program them to recognize cancer cells.

His team implanted a gene that does recognize melanoma into white cells taken from the patients' own blood, grew billions of the genetically changed cells in a laboratory, then reinjected them into the patients.

"These results represent the first time gene therapy has been used successfully to treat cancer," said Dr. Elias Zerhouni, director of NCI's parent agency, the National Institutes of Health.

"Moreover, we hope it will be applicable not only to melanoma but also for a broad range of common cancers, such as breast and lung cancer."

Rosenberg said he is awaiting Food and Drug Administration approval to attempt the treatment on lung and breast cancer patients with lymphocytes that have been changed to recognize those forms of cancer.

The melanoma experiment caused Mark Origer, 53, the postmaster of Watertown, Mass., to become one of NCI's most ardent supporters.

"I am so thankful that place is there and that there are brilliant minds working on these problems," Origer, one of the two patients in whom the treatment succeeded, said in a telephone interview.

He said his frightening struggle with melanoma began in 1999, when his wife noticed a small, dark mole between his shoulder blades.

After the mole was removed, a biopsy showed it contained melanoma cells. Despite repeated operations and chemotherapy treatments, the cancer continued to spread, he said.

"It's an emotional roller coaster," he said. "You fight it and you feel you've done all you can do and sometimes you get your hopes up and think you've finally defeated it. And then it shows you who's boss."

Origer said doctors finally told him they could not stop the cancer's spread.

"They told me there are some treatments that would buy me a year, but that's all," he said.

He said he and his wife "went to the Internet" in search of clinical trials and learned of the NCI research.

After he was accepted to participate in Rosenberg's research, blood was drawn from his arm and the white cells were separated out.

Rosenberg said in an interview that some melanoma patients produce white cells that are capable of recognizing telltale "knobs" on the cancer cells.

When these cells encounter a melanoma cell, they "clomp onto (the knob) and inject molecules called perforins that cause the cell to burst open," he said.

However, most melanoma victims and all the victims of other forms of cancer do not produce white cells that can recognize cancer cells, Rosenberg said.

After his lab located the gene that allows some lymphocytes to recognize and home in on melanomas, they spliced it into a retrovirus. Lymphocytes from Origer and the other 16 melanoma patients were then infected with the retrovirus.

Billions of the altered lymphocytes were grown in the laboratory, and were then injected back into the patients from which they came.

For Origer and the other patient for whom the treatment succeeded, it was only a few months before scans showed cancers beginning to shrink.

Finally, they disappeared altogether.

"I was sitting in Dr. Rosenberg's office, waiting to hear the results, and he walked in with a smile on his face," Origer recalled.

Rosenberg said he believes the reason the treatment failed in the other 15 patients was because the implanted gene did not cause their cells to readily recognize melanoma.

"I now have genes that are from 10 to 100 times more effective at finding the melanoma marker," he said.

He said he also has genes that can cause lymphocytes to recognize breast cancer, lung cancer and many other tumors.

I do feel "closer" to Fog now that he will also be under going chemo, and I just finished up mine. Amazing how animals can touch our lives and make them better and wake up the rest of the world that animals and horses have feelings and also deserve the best we can give them, and what we can "toto give them. He is blessed, as is Barbaro to have owners who love their horses so much that money does not matter. I also am aware that not all owners of horses can afford to do the same thing, BUT that does not mean they do not love their horses any less and will do what they can financially do if something comes up.

I have a special "token" that was given to me the day I started my chemo. I now plan to send it to the owners of Fog to give them strength to get that great horse through this.

Cheryl - I got two emails from her today - she seemed in high spirits! Don't know where she is tonight - maybe she had a hot date with Dr Dreamy!

Hi Sally, Baby

I love that you have come out to play tonite.

I am so incredibly grateful that my Zeke-boy came home to me...he is doing soooooooo well. He has a titanium plate and 11 screws that hold his right leg together...(sound familiar)..And when he goes out, I have to keep him on a leash..kind of like hand grazing...But I love it.

He had his cast removed yesterday, and he is moving along very well. Some open "road rash" sores keep him busy licking, and he is very tender-footed with himself, but he is a survivor, and is doing FABULUS.... I am so proud of him...I love him so much.

Mostly, I want to thank you all for the support and prayer you offered up to Zeke. It has been a Godsend having all of you on his side..Thanks for keeping him...

Here is an excerpt/abstract from the yesterday's Palm Beach Post about a promising treatment for melanoma that may be applied to other cancers. What is interesting about this article is that people in the study who had advanced cancer (large tumors, multiple metastases, etc.) were successfully treated. It does shed hope on the future of cancer treatment, more so than anything I have read in a long time. Perhaps this could apply to animals as well. Perhaps today's medicine for Lost in the Fog can save him for tomorrow's medicine that may cure him. I am aware that treating animals is different than treating people, but the article does give one a sense of hope for all creatures great and small in the face of this sinister disease.

Excerpt from the Palm Beach Post: August 31, 2006:

"National Cancer Institute's Dr.Rosenberg has long led a tantalizing research field: how to harness the body's immune system to fight cancer. White blood cells called T-lymphocytes hunt down germs and other foreign tissue. But cancerous cells look a lot like healthy cells, making it hard for those T-cells to spot a problem.
By 2002, Rosenberg had made a breakthrough. He found small numbers of cancer-fighting T-cells inside some patients with advanced melanoma. He literally pulled those cells out of their blood, and grew billions more of them in laboratory dishes, enough to have a chance at overwhelming a tumor when they're pumped back into patients. About half significantly improve after this so-called "cell-transfer therapy."

The link to yesterday’s entire article is here (which can be accessed free for ONE week after publication date):

Also a a follow up article

God bless Lost in the Fog, may your tremendous spirit aver">follow-up article today that also discusses the new treatment

the inherent and inalienable power you have to heal your body of this stealth that has been exposed.

May the power of our collective prayers bring this disease into complete remission/effacement.

Prayers for sweet Barbaro, too!

You have been with Zeke from the beginning of all this...your support is immeasurable...Thanks sweety, and to Sally, if I had the technology and know-how, I definitely would send pics of Zek grazing, cause he does just that...he grazes the grass in the yard....he is so beautiful...big, strong, 130lbs.of pure muscle, and the head the size of a Mastiff. His conformation is gorgeous...but, that's just me...his mom talking...Thanks ladies, I love you for loving Zeke.

QUESTION FOR ALEX:

Alex, Do either Michael or Tim go to Florida for the winter with their horses? Do the horses exercise all winter at Fair Hill? If Bobby is still in NBC when/if Michael & Peter go to Florida, what will he do without them?

Not the best of news about Foggy. However, hopefully the Chemo will help him.

Love you, Bobby & Foggy.

In dogs, lymphoma is one of the types of cancers that really can respond dramatically to chemo...If it sends the animal into remission (and ther is a high percentage of chance for remission in dogs - let's hope for the same in horses), there is a good chance for good quality of life for 2 years, jsut as stated in the article....In that 2 years, the way medical techonology keeps advancing, who knows what they will find - It just depends on how the animal responds to the treatment (and most animals dont feel the side effects of chemo to the same degree as we humans do)....

Good luck Fog - Keep fighting...I know how your owners feel....

GROW HOOF GROW!!!! Bobby: Never forget: You are the Undefeated Barbaro and a bright shinig star....

Mike Rea: Keep it up - It's so exciting to hear about your progress...

Alex, Tim, Peter, Michael, and all of Team Barbaro: thank you so very much.

Ha ha Therese

My Ms Maggie still wants her frozen towels!! She also has a thing for ice cubes as that is the only way she would take water after her surgery. Once you get Zeke to rehab part of it, email me and I will give you some more "neat" tricks to keep him from over doing things.

I told Ms Maggie about Zeke and I am sure she helped send those vibes towards him (she likes the boys any how!!!) and yes she is fixed.. ha ha..

I am glad to hear of Zeke, I was getting ready to email you when I saw your post, and I will email you also. I hope sometime to see a pic of Zeke to show Maggie!!

Thank you for all your hard work. So much good has come from this site and it just continues to reach farther and farther.

FOGGY
I pray you and all who love you remain strong. I feel prayers are being answered, the tumors have not gotten larger or spread and your trainer, owner, and doctors have decided to aggressively treat the disease. And, in addition, apparently chemo is not too hard on horses. I am thanking God and believing there will be a miracle.

BOBBY
You magnificent horse, I am so happy to hear Michael is "pleased" with you. I continue to pray God will complete the healing and fusing of your bones, grow your hoof, protect you other three hooves, and keep you from infections. Have a good night. I pray believing and expecting there will hear more good reports about you tomorrow.

For anyone interested in the Forego Stakes at Saratoga tomorrow, here's a good article...

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=2568162

I thought Mike C. might especially enjoy this: I've been following Commentator (probably the favorite) for a while, and have to laugh every time I think of a friend/racing fan in New York who told me before the Whitney:

"They had the new president of NYRA on TV and he said Zito was thinking of starting Commemorate (!) in the Whitney. I thought to myself, just another sharp guy who will take the NYRA far. He doesn't even know the horse's name. It's not Commemorate, it's Commentator. Ah yes, NY racing is in good hands."

Everyone's entitled to a mistake! So I'm giving the guy a break. But now I think of Commentator as "Commemorate"!

I will never forget Barbaro's name though. Never. His name has left more than an impression. It has left an imprint. Sleep well, Barbaro. And rest easily, Lost in the Fog.

Sweet dreams Champ. It's been a good week, you got a new cast, and Dr. Dean Sawbones felt good enough to throw you to the wolves while he's out getting recharged. Watch out, he's coming back with more new ideas!

The lightning and thunder is exciting, I bet you can tune into your immersion environment there, what with music on the radio most of the time. Whaddya like these days? Rap, gospel, country, rock, jazz, classical? - you sophisticated stud you!

Try the 'scared horsey' angle if there are some loud thunderclaps, and get a green intern begging you to take treats to soothe your 'frazzled' nerves.

Heck, what is louder and more sudden than a starting gate bell, eh Champ?

So no jumping around or kicking now, just curl up in your mound of straw and sleep in. All this rain is going to make lots of new tender shoots in your grazing patch.

I found a bunch of horse treat recipes, so I'm going to send you the healthiest thing I come up with, what do think of a no sugar treat? Hey! I heard that dismissive snort!

###Cassie, great story. The day Barbaro goes home, none of us should be allowed to shop (we will be so high!!).

Hang in there LITF. My husband had chemo for lymphoma last winter/spring, six treatments, three weeks apart (each), and the tumor was gone after three months. We expected the worst with side effects, etc., but he NEVER was the least bit sick (he actually felt better after each one - go figure), never lost his hair, etc. I believe one of the drugs they gave him was Ritoxin (sp?). Prayers and positive thoughts are coming your way, LITF, and you will do just fine.

Good night, sweet Barbaro, sleep tight.

Time to say goodnight boys...candles are lit and prayers are said!

Precious Bobby, You keep doing what you are doing and heal! Probably a scared little boy tonight with the winds and rain...I hope Michael your buddy is there with you while you sleep. You get a good one big guy, will check on you in the morning. I love you.

Warrior Foggy, I am pleased that those nasty tumors did not get any bigger. You be a brave boy and take your chemo. Try to eat and keep strong. You will beat this champ, I have no doubt. I will check on you when I wake up, until then, get a good peaceful sleep and happy dreams to you, I am with you. I love you, sleep tight.

One more article, about Funny Cide, who will run in the Woodward if it's not too sloppy tomorrow (go away rain!!). I didn't realize that Edgar Prado had been his jockey (at least once in 2004).

Excerpt: "Win, place or show, Saturday they will be showing up to watch the horse who once showed the world that anything was possible. And for this, just seeing him again will be good enough."

Again, as always, may it be another comfortable night and day for Barbaro - and The Fog. Candles lit for them, and the Angel group, those who have gone from us too soon.
