Barbaro Updates: 64

updates are now here.

Update 593: Just spoke to Peter Brette. He was unable to visit Barbaro today, I think he spent most of the day cleaning things up in his yard after the weather that came through yesterday (something I have neglected to do). As far as Peter is aware, Barbaro remains fine, so that is good enough for me.

Update 592: An excellent article on Lost in the Fog: HOME STRETCH.

Update 591: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg about Funny Cide. No real excuses, Funny appeared to come back from the race fine. Barclay is having the vet go over him thoroughly but nothing appears to be amiss. Barclay mentioned that his jockey felt Funny bobble a little going down the backside and did not pick up the bit from that point on.

Showing Up is still scheduled for his final work in tuesday before the Man o' War, we will follow him into saturday's race.

Update 590: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (saturday night). I saw Michael as I was leaving the woodchip track on my first set this morning. Due to the poor weather yesterday I went in today to ride a couple for Tim. Michael has a few riders come in on sundays, one of whom (today) is Emily. She took some nice pictures of Round Pond at Monmouth last weekend. Her partner is a professional photographer and is covering the 2006 World Equestrian Games.
update sunday, september 3, 8:25 am

Update 589: With the Woodward now complete (Premium Tap springs $64 upset) our racing focus will shift to Belmont next weekend where Showing Up will return to the races in the Man o' War: Man o' War is Showing Up's best option. This is the first of the three year old "big guns" taking on older horses (but not likely Fair Hill's Better talk Now who won it last year: Better Talk Now Unlikely to Defend Man o' War). Barclay mentioned to me a couple of days ago that Showing Up was likely to have his final breeze in preparation for the Man o' War on tuesday at Belmont. If Showing Up runs well in the Man o' War he will be on target for the Breeders Cup Turf.

I am beginning to develop an FAQ for this site. If you would like questions added, please list them in the comments section of that page.

This morning's update on Barbaro will likely be a little later than usual. I have a couple to get on beginning at 7 am, once I am done I will then try to get the update.

Good morning, Jo,

Looks like you and I are the only ones awake this A.M.
How is the weather across the pond?

Blessings, to you!

Sorry Faith, there is also Ruth Ann and myself. For me it is 2:38 p.m.

Jo, I only get the English racing, one hour or two at the best a day.

Awake in CT, too...almost constant rain since Friday night, but don't have the high winds here that other parts of the state have endured...and we still have electricity!!!

Hoping that the rain has stopped and the mud dried out in Barbaro's neck of the woods so maybe our big guy can get outside for a munchie of grass...he must have cabin fever - I know I do!!

Bluegrass Cat adapts to life off the track

DERBY RUNNER-UP ENJOYING RETIREMENT AT WINSTAR
By Maryjean Wall
HERALD-LEADER RACING WRITER

Second in the Travers Stakes behind Bernardini, Bluegrass Cat was first off the plane when a horse charter flight arrived in Lexington this week.

A full field of 11 other horses unloaded behind him. The scene was almost like his seven-length win in the Grade I Haskell Stakes, for he was in a van and on his way to WinStar Farm before the others came down the ramp.

You can watch a video of Bluegrass Cat's arrival and unloading at the airport by going to Thoroughbredtimes.com, clicking on the stallion directory and clicking again on the story, in the left margin, of his arrival.

The son of Storm Cat (the Kentucky Derby runner-up and winner of $1.8 million) was happily bedded down in his new home, munching hay, when I paid a visit this past week.

He turned to the door and seemed happy to see people. No doubt the transition from Todd Pletcher's busy racing stable to being the only horse inside the barn during the day has taken some adjusting on Bluegrass Cat's part.

He'll get 30 days in the stall while healing begins on the non-displaced fracture of his right hind pastern. He will not need surgery.

After the stall rest will come 30 days of walking for exercise. For now, he's wearing a thick bandage wrapped around his leg to protect the fracture.

Bluegrass Cat's fans, who were so disappointed to see him retire with this injury on the day following the Travers, will never know the answer to that "what-if" question: could he have defeated Bernardini on another track, under different circumstances, if he got another crack at the Travers' winner?

Hard to say, since Bernardini defeated Bluegrass Cat emphatically, by nearly eight lengths. But Bluegrass Cat certainly had a determined air about him, chasing the winner down the Saratoga stretch.

"He showed a lot of heart running down the stretch at him," said Larry McGinnis, WinStar stallion manager.

As McGinnis said, it was like Bluegrass Cat was saying, "I'm trying, I'm trying." But Man o' War wasn't going to catch Bernardini that day.

Bluegrass Cat has left a barnful of race horses behind to join his new barn mates: Tiznow, Victory Gallop, Distorted Humor and Speightstown. When he joined this group, he didn't receive just any old stall.

WinStar gave him the stall once occupied by the 1987 champion sprinter, Groovy, who died earlier this year. A brass plate engraved with Groovy's name hangs above the door.

Bluegrass Cat might soon learn that this previous occupant of the stall loved chocolate cream-filled donuts. Judging by Bluegrass Cat's apparent fondness for people, this might be a tradition of this stall that he'll be most happy to renew.

Good morning, Faith, and anybody else who's awake! :-)

Still very blustery here in North Yorkshire, but no rain...yet! It's going to take forever for this mud to dry out! :-/

Mornin' Alex and Barbarians ...since 'all the news that's fit to print' is at the top, better get right in there for the Nobels! So it's *down to* Better Talk Now and Showing Up for the Man O'War.. oh c'mon. There's gotta be a horse named Anemic in there someplace.. YES! WOW!!!!

Jo (UK),

Thank you. Seeing BGC get off, was amazing.

Before I used to think Barbaro was absolutely beautiful. I still think the same way, but can also see the beauty in all those sweet horses. Too bad there are too many selfish people in the world that cannot see the beauty and personalities of the horses, but the kindness of the people on this board make up for those type of people.

Good Morning Faith,

I am doing fine, too hot to go anywhere. Sometimes it is almost like having cabin fever. Looking forward towards the end of September so that maybe we can see the sky. Have not seen it in about four months.

Did you see the link Jo (UK) put up? It was great to BGC getting off the plane.

Posted by: Socorro at September 3, 2006 10:56 AM

Good morning all Barbaro lovers! (Off course that would include everyone in horseland) Rainy and gloomy in the Green Mountains this morning but I'm on my way to Saratoga anyway as this is my last visit for the year. As usual the meet has flown by (or is it that I am getting older?) and winter is around the corner. Waiting for the update first but I'm so glad that Bobby continues to do well. We are kind of getting used to ACN but keep the positive thoughts and prayers coming for this wonderful horse and Mike Rea as well!! Sooo many thanks to Alex for all of the great work on keeping us all in the know. Not sure what we would have done without him. Hope everyone has a super day!

Posted by: Richie at September 3, 2006 10:56 AM

You're right, Socorro...each one has his/her own individual beauty and personality which makes every horse very special.

It's nice to hear that the Cat is happy and healing, and ready for those donuts! :-)

Posted by: Jo (UK) at September 3, 2006 10:58 AM

Socorro,

I also saw Bluegrass Cat, when he arrived at Lexington. He sure is a sweety! He looked healthy, and I didn't notice if he was limping. Hope he has a nice retirement, and lots of people to love and care for him. It has always amazed me how they can transport a horse by plane. It just seems that they would be jossled all over the place.

Blessings, to you,
Faith

Posted by: Faith at September 3, 2006 10:59 AM

Good morning Barbaro-

Hope your day is calm and peaceful...
Will check for update later.

Heading out for a gallop on the beach-
it's beautiful, clear and cool here.

Will Quiet Comments win the Man o War? Showing Up? Better Talk Now? or ...Anemic...? hmmm. Dr. Richardson once called this sort of thing 'a hitch in his gitty up' as I recall! †KAWilson

Faith,

Do you realize how lucky you are to live in Kentucky? I hope someday when we return to live in the US, we can either live in KY or TN.

My wish would be to have a horse, but what I am learning on this website is that there is alot of responsibility along with their health. The best would be for me to visit certain places where horses are rescued and contribute. The problem I have is that I get too attached to them.

That is why we now have six cats, we take them in to care for them and then don't have the heart to give them away.

Posted by: Socorro at September 3, 2006 11:08 AM

Good morning Alex and all the US early rises! Hello on other continents too!
#####
Faith... thanks for your kind words...I got up at 5:30 this morning to feed her and as I opened the refrigerator to get her food.....I remembered! But this too shall pass...it better hurry!

I have a question for ya'all (a former MI girl now adapting to the Southern lingo..:-)
During the race yesterday and Premium Tap coming down the stretch, I noticed his tongue hanging out and I had never seen anything like that before....so long and flapping in the breeze...is this usual? Someone said he didn't have his tongue contained....is there something that they put in the horses' mouths that hold them in during a race? It was very funny to watch...you always knew who was in front even from a distance. It looked liked he was carrying a flag in his mouth saying here I am..I'm winning!!

Posted by: D'Anne in NC at September 3, 2006 11:12 AM

Good morning, Richie,

You have a super day, as well.
Don't know if you were around several days ago,
when the morning update was "Barbaro has an "ok" night. Boy, did that stir the puddin'! Everyone went ballistic and thankfully, everything worked out, and all is well. Just goes to show how used we are to getting ACN.

As for Alex, he is our lifeline, and we would be lost without his leadership and devotion to keeping us up to date. God bless him!

Blessings, to you,
Faith

Posted by: Faith at September 3, 2006 11:12 AM

D'Anne...they use tongue ties over there, and sometimes it makes the tongue stick out like that. Alex explained it in one of his blue boxes yesterday and people were freaked out by it.

Look at this picture of Funny Cide...you can see the tongue tie.

http://www.suzyrice.com/BIRD/archives/FunnyCide_Wins_Kentucky-Derby.jpg

Posted by: Jo (UK) at September 3, 2006 11:16 AM

D'Anne,

Too funny! A flag in his mouth?
Alex explained it to us yesterday. I seems that they tie the horses tongue, so it won't flop around, but obviously it didn't work in his case. I have never seen anything like that before. Was wondering if it was going to be dragging on the track before the race was over.
Poor guy! It didn't seem to bother him, did it?

Blessings, to you,
Faith

Posted by: Faith at September 3, 2006 11:20 AM

Thanks Jo
I wonder if being tongue-tied has any relation to this???Probably not!
Got to go feed the animals so I'll be back to see how our boy is doing today.
C U All later.

Posted by: D'Anne in NC at September 3, 2006 11:20 AM

Hi D'Anne,

Alex has a place on top of this board "FAQ" in the second paragraph, where people have asked questions (that was one of the questions) where he has answered that very question about the tongue.

Please let me know if you cannot find it and I will copy the answer for you. Thought you might be interested in looking at some of the other questions.

####
Reading about you getting up, "at 5:30 this morning to feed her" reminds me of what I went through with my babies.

We all get into a routine and where our babies pass on, it seems as if our whole life has come to a halt, like an automobile accident, it stops all of a sudden. Hoping in time the pain in your heart will lessen.

Good Morning, Barbaro! My night has been filled with many thoughts and prayers for you!
I'm leaving shortly for Mass and will be lighting another votive candle for you by the Holy Family niche (one for your friend, Foggy, too).
Seen Dr. R yet? I'm listening for a loud "neigh", smile!
It's rather a somber morning, still a bit of drizzle coming down -- you are probably SO READY to get out walking again -- just think the rains probably really freshened up your grazing spots for you! Your friend, Mike Rea, is waiting to get outside, too!
Off I go to light those candles for you and Foggy!
My heart beats for your heart,Barbaro!
Love, kisses on your nose, and "scratchies", and crunch those carrots!

Go, Barbaro! You miracle horse! I've been on a ship in Norway since 8/26 and just got home (Ohio) late last night. People from many countries on our ship asked about you with great interest and concern. But the internet satellite was "unstable" where we were for most of that time, so could not get updates. You just keep on keeping on, big guy. Your team is incredible! I'm soooo happy to hear the good news about you. And, thanks a million again, Alex, for posting updates.

Hi , just dropping in for a quick good morning to all .

Glad to hear ACN. It's so much better than okay.
Is the ground too soaked for Barbaro to get out today? I know they wouldn't want his cast wet.

Good luck today big guy, and continue to heal.
Love to you, and Foggy.

Glad to read each day, how Barbaro's days and evenings are going good; never to take anything for granted, I am indeed grateful for these continued positive updates for our guy.
Watched the Woodward stakes yesterday, rooting for my sentimental favorite, Funny Cide, such an underdog when he won two legs of the triple crown. Somehow, I believe he never received the proper accolades as he was not a Kentucky bred horse and bought by a group of middle class guys on a hunch. He is not a beautiful horse, but for me had the will and heart to win those 3-years races. Last night, Iheard the commentators say that his best days are behind him; it was kind of hard to hear them pass that judgement. Anyway, I think he is most deservingof a place in horse history.
Have a great day, Barbaro--we all love you...Keep going with your recovery!

D"Anne: Ever so sorry about your recent loss; my husband and I have been through this before and presently have a 15 yr. old female mackerel tabby who is dearly loved. I know how much this hurts and know how difficult it is to break the routine of feeding, looking for them in their favorite "spots", etc. You are in my thoughts. (I lived in MI a long, long time ago. CT, too, before Colo.)

The candles for B are low, so please spare a minute and light one. He still has a ways to go. Can hardly wait for him to be in a stall munching hay and enjoying retirement like Bluegrass Cat. Poor Barbaro has had to work harder in retirememnt than he did when he was racing!

Thank you, God, for ACN, and thank you, Alex, for all the updates.

FAQ question--what are the Beyer speed figures; how do they determine them, and are they the most objective way to tell which is the fastest horse? Thank you :)

I hope Funny Cide is OK; sad to see him not do so well yesterday. That was too funny how Premium Tap's tongue was flopping around. Wouldn't that have bothered him?

Hope everyone has a good day. We had 5 mins. of sun and blue sky this morning, now it's gloomy again. Yuck.

Bobby, hope you get to go outside today and pick your own grass. You must have cabin fever like the rest of us in the northeast :(

Grow, hoof, grow, and fuse, bones, fuse!

dear wonderful barbaro,
hopefully ,you will get some fresh air today..maybe..and i am thrilled you had another comfortable night.
.it is a long stretch a long journey you have, i know, BUT we are so grsteful we are to this point..inch by inch gorw hoof ,keep all things balanced..
i stay in the moment
..you are a warrior and a champion and as many wonderful fans of yours have written,. i will be beside myself wiht jjoy to imagine you grazing with your pals around you.
all healed.
thnak yuo dear lord.
.for today, you are safe ..and hopefully not in pain and happy as can be with all your loved ones taking excellent care of you.bless them--
thank goodness all horses ,as far as i know, have made it ..and i send love and support to brother derk . who is to say he loost some heart with what he has seen and felt? i dont want him to feel badly that he came in fourth. he is such a steady big beauty..
i suspect his mind ,sppirit and soul,
could use some of our love and light
..he remembers that day, i have watched him run and it seems as if focus and heart are not as clear as it culd be..just from my eye..
i am sure of it..and i think all horses that day knew something terrible happned..never underestimate a creature that is known to be a great observer of their human owners.--i thnk they feel everything and if the trainers and owners asare as sentient, then they get the most form their horse..as in any highly competitive sport..
.sometimes thier lives depend on their acumen..i
say to myself, just walkj in their hooves for a second,

bless fog and all
i treasure what alex has done here and all the wonderful people ,who own beautful horses making joy and history by following their heartswith wisdom and compassion..such a learning curve owning any pet, not to mention, bringing up children..

.
our vigil included some friends from london and locals..we made a pot luck dinner and shared articles and photos of barbaro and lost in fog..after we lit candles and offered prayers
...thank you everybody and may the day flow as you all wish,

The pictures from the World Equestrian Games are very interesting. Beautiful horses.

From what little I know, it appears some of these dressage movements - while beautiful - are contrary to the natural movement of a horse's legs (kind of like humans doing ballet, lol).

Is this true, and if so, is there a high % of horses injured in this activity? Just curious.

Anti Slaughter Issue

Bo Derick will be on ABC in a few minutes talking about the anti slaughter issue. It's ABC This Week with Geroge Stephanaplis

Posted by: ShelleyA at September 3, 2006 2:45 PM

Sarah, I don't think any of them are actually contrary, but it is hard for them to do if they are not collected. In fact, I don't think they COULD do most of them unless they were collected. Those horses you see in those pictures, and ones that you see in the Olympics have the ideal confirmation for a dressage horse. Not all horses have that confirmation and therefore could not do some of those moves. I rode one horse (Belgian/quarter) who had a pretty thick chest and a short, thick neck and it took him longer to warm up into a collection and he had a difficult time with the half pass. He could do it, but it was hard for him. He could not get past first level because of his confirmation.

Posted by: Pat G San Jose, CA at September 3, 2006 2:53 PM

Oops..in regards to injury...they do get injured, but you dont see life threatening stuff like in horse racing. Dressage horses tend to get pulled muscles, muscle soreness, Their back might hurt, stiff neck, they may pull something in a leg, or reach up and grab a quarter or something like that. Once the horse is fully capable of doing the movements, it is not too much of a problem for them. It IS work, but they can do dressage movements for a long time into their life.

That was very smart of the Jacksons. What I got from that instantly is that all horses have personalities and characters, and some (many) may be like Barbaro. It's almost a call to love all horses for their ancient bond to humans, and to not reduce them to that.

THE LAWYER RON EFFECT, BY WAY OF BARBARO

From today's St.Louis Post Dispatch

Derby dreams come true
Chad Morelli
Of the Suburban Journals
Collinsville Herald
08/30/2006

If this is the future of horse racing at Fairmount Park, Bryan Rey is already looking forward to next year.

"It's an even bigger thrill than I had imagined," Rey said. "There's 10,000 people screaming their heads off so that a horse will run faster."

For Rey, a 34-year-old Collinsville resident, Saturday's St. Louis Derby served as his first night at the racetrack. Though Fairmount Park announced the paid attendance at 7,848, many longtime patrons of the track estimated the crowd to be closer to 10,000 for the inaugural running of the derby.

The race accomplished everything that track officials hoped it would. The impressive field of horses attracted new fans, raised the profile of Fairmount Park and gave local horse racing handicappers an incredible night of racing. The $250,000 purse was the biggest in the history of the track.

In the end, it was 4-5 favorite Lawyer Ron running away with the race. He edged out second-place finisher Smokeyjonessutton, beating him by nearly a full length and claiming a $150,000 prize. Smokeyjonessutton picked up $50,000 and third-place finisher Lewis Michael claimed $25,000. The remainder of the purse was divvied up between the horses in fourth- through 12th place.

Lawyer Ron, a horse that began the year with hopes of competing for the Triple Crown, ran a disastrous race at the Kentucky Derby in April and finished 12th in the nationally televised event. His trainers later found bone chips in his right hind ankle.

Surgery followed, with the horse spending nearly three months in rehab before entering the St. Louis Derby.

"It's weird -- no one likes lawyers, but we all seem to like (Lawyer Ron)," Rey said. "That story of having high expectations, then failing, then coming back; it's all pretty amazing."

Lawyer Ron's story brought in thousands of fans at Fairmount. Many said they hope the horse will compete in the Breeder's Cup Classic at Churchill Downs in Kentucky on Nov. 4, one of the premier horse races in the nation. Winning at the St. Louis Derby was the first step on the path toward the Breeder's Cup.

"A lot of us out here are pulling for him," Rey said. "He seems like a great horse."

For Fairmount Park, the St. Louis Derby could be the first step on the path to a racing renaissance. Many of those in attendance said they enjoyed the bright lights and national attention the race brought to the track.

In an era where riverboat casinos have caused Fairmount Park to lose weekly attendance and reduce purse sizes, the St. Louis Derby finally found a way to bring back the casual fans.

"On a Saturday night, this is tough to beat," said Edwardsville resident Joseph Shores. "I'm not all that big on horse racing, but this is pretty exciting."

Track officials hope the trend will continue. Derby organizers are already planning a similar event for next year, hoping to attract more sponsors and possibly even offer a bigger purse.

The first running of the St. Louis Derby did come with a few flaws, at least according to many of the seasoned horse racing fans.

Some complained of long lines at the concession stands and betting windows. Others said the facility should have done a better job with parking, as many fans were forced to park in remote areas half a mile from the track.

Additionally, some fans said they were unable to get racing forms, after many of the booths at the track were sold out. It was a similar story with souvenir T-shirts.

"This many people around, I'm sure they're scrambling to keep everyone happy," said Collinsville resident David Flocht. "But we've got beer and horse racing. Life is good."

Many, many years ago I read an interview with Bo Derek. She mostly talked about her horses. She was curled up in the straw next to a horse recovering from a broken leg. It was the first time I ever heard that a horse COULD recover from a broken leg, so I've always remembered that article. I still remember her love and passion for not just her horses, but animals everywhere. That is now how I think of her--as an animal rights advocate.

Good morning, beloved Barbaro and all the Maniacs! It is a beautiful Sunday in Virginia!! I am always happy to see ACN, big boy!!! Hope you get to go out today, with plastic sleeves for your casts, of course!! Gosh, Michael and Peter have taken such good care of you this week, and your other Daddy, Dr. R., will be back today or tomorrow! So much to look forward to for the Miracle Boy!!

I have a question for everyone. I have been purchasing (ebay) many 8X10's of Barbaro to put in an album. They are all fantastic, but the one photo I have been trying to find for weeks now, is the one of Bobby in the shedrow behind the red roses. I actually bought a tote bag with this pic on it, but haven't found where to buy an 8X10??? His ears are perked up and it is an awesome photo! I think it is by Barbara Livingston, but I'm not sure. Any ideas how I could purchase one?

I have beautiful pics of Bobby with Michael and Peter, the Jacksons; many of Edgar/Barbaro winning the Derby, but I don't think any have been done of Dr. Richardson and Barbaro. Maybe Sabina could take some?!? Have to have one of our boy with his Doc!!

Good morning to you, too, Foggy! As always, you are wished only beautiful days ahead. Stay strong and brave! Miracles do happen every day!

Have a beautiful Sunday, all!! Judy

He said the next week in the Senate the Republicans would concentrate only on issues of national security. The moderator asked him about immigration, the budget, anti slaughter, but he only again emphasized they would concentrate on national security issues only. So maybe make more phones calls and emails to Republicans. I will try to find the transcript. thank you.

Hi, Team Barbaro!

To those wondering about the weather here in Chester County (20 miles from NBC), THE SUN IS OUT!!!! Its still humid, but at least I can see blue sky and there is a slight breeze...so the odds are better that Barbaro will be able to go outside to graze today. Its been an intense couple of days with Ernesto flying thru - hope everybody is safe. I was all over yesterday and today and there is some storm damage, but not as bad as it could have been. For that, I'm thankful.

Emily, I loved the slide show of Round Pond...so pretty...

I hope the sun is shinning on you today Barbaro, everything is better when the sun shines.

I saw Bo Derek this morning. Her love of horses shines through when she appears on shows like this. I wish more celebrities who had horses followed in her footsteps and used their celebrity for causes like Anti-Slaughter Bill.

For all Bo's work with Anti-Slaughter Bill she will remain a "10" forever with me.

Not only does the tongue tie keep the horse's tongue in his mouth, but keeps the tongue from going over the bit. A bit under the sensitive tongue could very well make the horse go over backwards to get away from the pain. I have seen that happen, never in a race though.

Hope the sun is shinning where you are, if not, it should be in your area soon. Trust me it is up there.

Thanks again Alex and Emily for those terrific pictures of Round Pond.!!!!

Posted by: sharonlynn at September 3, 2006 7:47 PM

ALEX...that article isn't very positive when you first read it, and on reading it again I feel less panicky about the Fog but puzzled about the reporter and where all the quotes came from...ie are they all from the one interview, or taken from interviews from when Foggy was first diagnosed?

Is there any chance of you yourself getting in touch with Greg Gilchrist and talking to him, rather than us relying on disjointed and not so positive news articles?

Is anybody doing regular Foggy updates over there, just as you do for us? We include Foggy in our everyday thoughts and vigils, he and Barbaro are connected because they're both fighting the odds and proving that miracles do happen, so maybe Greg would talk to you so we can hear it from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

What do you think?

As previous posters commented, Home Stretch by Mark Emmons was a real tear jerker, but I just had to read it anyway. Mr. Gilchrest and Mr. Aleo are two more extraordinary people passionate in their quest to do everything possible for LITF despite the odds. Can't help but luv them all! Thanks so much for referencing the article, Alex.

Congratulations to Pomeroy and Premium Tap on their respective wins yesterday. It indeed was a sight to see. Not knowing anything about tongue ties, I thought poor Premium Tap was tuckered out from running so hard...I definitely have a lot more to learn about horses and racing!

Relieved to hear Funny Cide is okay and all the other horses that raced are too.

Barbaro: Lookin good on the bit they broadcasted yesterday during the race. Pretty soon,if weather permits, you'll be back grazing with Dr. R. by your side. Here's hoping the next time we see you you'll be cast free! Won't be long now.

Bluegrass Cat: Wishing you the best as well. I only saw you race once and you were awesome!

Mike Rea and family: prayers and best wishes for today, tomorrow, and always.

May everyone have a safe and happy holiday.

Hey Bobby-how's my handsome boy? Another comfortable night & today the weather has improved. I hope you are out for a graze, feeling happy & inquisitive. Have a great afternoon sassy boy, & I'll check in again later. Much love, many prayers & kisses to you!

Fog-we're all pulling for you & you can do it. Just don't give up! Thank you Mr. Gilchrist & Mr. Aleo for not giving up, but giving every opportunity for Fog to get better. The recent tests showed things had been stopped in their tracks--that's remarkable news. We're all praying for another miracle!

I won't have the time to scroll through all the posts, but wish everyone well.

Mary S-your posts are inspiring & the power of those words touch me--surely that Power reaches Bobby & Fog, touching them with healing & love. Bless all who love Bobby & Fog!

NANCY IN CT--The sun is finally out now!! Yay!

God bless Bo Derek for her activism, and the Jacksons for being the best mom and pop a horse could have.

Precious Barbaro - Good boy! Another comfortable night! Yes! You are doing great. We are all here for you. Your parents Roy and Gretchen sent a very clever message to Congress. They are wonderful, special people - we all admire them greatly. Praying for you always, Barbaro. We love you very, very much.

Dear Foggy - Come on, you can do it. Stay calm and eat lots of nutritious food. Love and prayers to you.

Thank you Jesus for answered prayers. Please continue to steadily heal our beloved Barbaro and little Foggy. I pray you help us to save horses from the atrocities that are committed against them.

In Celebration of Barbaro...Our Hero!

This is the online book I have created for Barbaro. Many of you have written in the book and I thank you so much for that.

I have this on the forum under "To All Barbaromaniacs". And I am uncomfortable discussing this here but those who have wrote to me told me to keep posting it here so everyone is aware of it.

Alex posted the link to the book in Updates 48. Just click on that link and write what you want.

Keep in mind that I am buying the original for the Jacksons, then copies to Dr. Dean, Michael, Edgar, Eduardo, NBC hospital, Peter, Alex and Tim.

So if you write, there is a thank you section where you can individually thank each and every one involved with Bobby. And of course, write to Bobby.

Please people...regardless of how you think of me,,,,this is not for me! This is something I did for all of you here to express your feelings for everyone who is in Bobby's life.

The book has 88 pages so far. I won't discuss the book here again, out of respect for Alex posting it and the forum.

I watched a very interesting race Saturday, The
Woodward from Saratoga, the horse that impressed
me the most, was big and reminded me alot of Barbaro
I later found out that he was A 32/1 longshot and
not really given a chance, as four of the other horses in the field were four super class throughbreeds including Kentucky Derbt winner,
Funny Cide, even though he wasn't given a chance,
there was something special about this big horse,
I even liked the little Jig Jog dance step he performed on his way to the starting gate. He started from the no. 8 post position [the same as
Barbaro when he won the Derby].
The race started and this big horse just seemed to fly around the track in about fourth position
I noticed some thing strange, it looked like part
of the horses bridle on the left side had come loose, but a close-up camera shot revealed it wasn't part of his bridle, but was his huge tongue that was just a flopping out of his mouth into the wind.[I haven't seen anything like that since Michael Jordon, lead the
Chicago Bulls to six NBA Championships, when asked
about why he stuck out his tongue, Jordon replied,
because I play better]. Well this method of tongue
wagging seems to also work in horseracing as well,
because "Premium Tap" with his tongue just a flapping, ran away from the field and won The
Woodard at Saratoga, he not only won the race he became the longest, longshot to ever win The
Woodard. He paid $64.00 for a $2.00 bet.

I think you should keep posting here occassionally. New people post all the time and they might not know where to look for it.

Your book is "all barbaro" and belongs here.

Thank you for your generosity, Sharonlynn.

I think it shows all of Barbaro's personality. The eyes, the look that says "these roses aren't bad. But they belong here in front of me where I can see their beauty", and of course the look of an "old soul". The same beauty that all of us see in this beautiful creation from our Heavenly Father.

Thank you, Alex, for that excellent article for Lost In The Fog, and I stand and salute Mr. Gilchrist and Mr. Aleo, and yes the tears are flowing . . . .

Barbaro, Lost In The Fog, and Mike Rea:
I lit three votive candles, one for each of you, in the Holy Family niche before Mass this morning. Your intentions are thus remembered around the clock; and you also are being remembered at several Shrines.

Barbaro, the sun has come out just about an hour ago (I'm not too far away from NBC), and so perhaps you and Dr. R were able to put on your Wellies and step out a bit. . . if no Wellies for you well perhaps tomorrow. I hope you had one of those famous hugs for Dr. R!

Peppermint kisses, "scratchies" and hugs to you!
Sweet dreams and a comfortable night, and don't forget healing positive thoughts!

We heard you prefer your fly spray to be "rubbed on", not sprayed - bless your heart, you go Barbaro!!!

Barbaro, I think you should see what you can do about getting Alex a special pass in to visit you! (Understanding ICU regulations and all, but just maybe you could whisper in a few ears. . .)
Keep those ears perked up! Love you so much!!

HELLO BARBARO NATION AND BOBBYHEAD FAMILY ....

Glad to see that our Annointed One is having another comfortable day/night ... Great News, dearest Bobby!!

I'd like to offer thanks to Mary L and Susan in TX for their 'directions/instructions' last night on how to better navigate Pedigreequery.com and getting all the vital stats there. Your suggestions worked like a charm ... thank you both so much.

Thank you, Alex, for your continued updates on Showing Up's next race in the Man O'War next Saturday at Belmont! I will greatly anticipate watching that race and if he's wearing #8, I think I will just 'die' ... not really, but it will be incredible if he is wearing that #.

I hope all of my Bobbyhead family members are fine and well and enjoying this long holiday weekend ... Someone's post last night of "You'll Never Walk Alone" for Bobby and Foggy reminded me that Jerry Lewis' Annual MDA Telethon begins tonight ...

OK ... haven't read any posts for today yet, so I will eagerly do that now!!

Hey guys! Just thought you would want to know that the first thing Dr. R. did on his return to NBC was to track down the source of the late night calls and hang-ups to his house...seems that they were coming from a phone hidden away in Barbaro's stall...Barbaro later confessed that it was "just to hear the sound of his voice..."

I see everyone is asking about Premium Tap's tongue flapping incident...he was quoted as saying..."tongue-tie ...schmong-tie....I was just waving hello to my good friend Barbaro..."

Hope that clears up the matter.

Hope you are having a very pleasant PM munching on vegies and keeping yourself intertained with all those get well cards & letters & NBC staff making their rounds. It is almost 7Pm here in Ohio. When do go to sleep?

FOGGY! You also are a loveable hunk of horse. Alex posted a very nice article about you today. I will not mince words, chemo is a challenge. But
if that is truly the only other medical option left-- then with that upbeat, winning, attitude and your continued attunement to the healing vibrations being sent to you(on a regular bases) along with the love that surounds you----those nasty invaders will be held at bay or eliminated from your body. Simply keep keeping all channels open (like Barbaro) and stay tunned to the incoming, manifested, healing vibrations. It is their nature to help. Will touch base with you & Barbaro again another day.

Thank you for the BGC eg fracture input.

The story of The Fog is just heartbreaking, but it does reaffirm my faith in the human race to see his connections rally to give him all of the support they can. Isn't it ironic that mankind seems to be at its best when they act as loving as the animals with which they share the planet.

All of our love and courage goes out to The Fog and his connections.

Well, the article on "Foggy" had tears streaming down my face again. What beautiful spirits inhabit the bodies of Harry Aleo and Greg Gilchrist ... I can't help but think of Michael, Peter and the Jacksons whenever I read about Foggy's loving, caring, compassionate connections.

And Foggy himself ... what can I say ... as the old Janis Joplin song from the 60s ... "Just another little piece of my heart now, baby!" Does anyone remember that song? Well Foggy now owns another little piece of mine!!

He is such a glowing spirit with light emanating from his entire being ... you can just 'see' the aura around him. What a fighter and fearless champion he is. In some ways, his journey is much more 'treacherous' than our beloved Bobby's, and my heart and soul cry for Foggy.

Last night I spent almost a full hour at both sites on gratefulness.org, lighting candle after candle for Foggy and Bobby ... I don't know what else to do but I am so very very very glad that he has people like Greg and Harry with him ... they will never give up on Foggy as long as he believes in himself, and that's not even up for debate! HE BELIEVES!!

And speaking of touching and warm ... I watched Andre Agassi's final tennis match today and I have never, ever seen a more humbling, gracious "Farewell Speech" than the one he gave Centre Court this afternoon. I cried right along with him for the years, tears and memories he has given tennis fans all over the world. Best of Luck, Andre ... We Will Definitely Miss You on the courts!!

All of the folks who "tuck Barbaro in" every night reminded me of a documentary I saw earlier this year on the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya. This is a foundation that rescues orphaned baby elephants, and their caretakers literally take them out to the bush every day to learn to be elephants, and then tuck them in at night in their stalls with a blanket over them, since they don't have the herd to keep them warm on cold nights. The caretakers actually put down a small mattress and sleep alongside the baby elephants. It's truly heartwarming, and I get a similar mental picture with all the folks who post to wish Barbaro a good night. Thought it was worth sharing with all the animal lovers out there. You can see the babies photos at www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org. Thanks for indulging me, and a good night to all of YOU!

Anti Slaughter Bill....How You Can Help

http://www.hsus.org/legislation_laws/citizen_lobbyist_center/national_day_horses.html

Posted by: ShelleyA at September 3, 2006 11:27 PM

Good day, all. I'm happy to hear that our two basic boys, Big B and the Fog, are doing as well as, or better than, expected today. Bluegrass Cat, congratulations on your new digs, and you heal up and get out on those beautiful pastures with the girls... so many should be so lucky!!

I have a sad track story to report... My tenant owns Arabians here on the West Coast, and a 3 year old filly named Puff's Magic Dragon from her beautiful stallion has been racing here in California on the fair circuit (one of the places where Arabians can race). She was known to be so level headed and easy that she was gate certified on the first try, and easily won her first race in Stockton.

She had been moved to Fresno for the races this weekend, and was backtracking with her exercise rider (opposite direction from any horses breezing, I guess...) when she dodged toward the inside of the track and collided head on with one of two quarter horses running hard with each other. Her rider was thrown free, the quarter horse rider was pinned but is ok, but the Arabian filly died instantly and the quarter horse was euthanized because of a broken shoulder. Quarter horses are bigger and heavier than Arabians, and she would not have stood a chance in any case, and the exercise rider and trainer haven't yet spoken to try to find out why she dodged. This filly was known to have not set a foot wrong on her path so far, and my tenant said she just feels any horse can have that moment of inexplicable reaction that is hard to believe based on previous behavior.

Needless to say, a number of people are broken up about this accident, and the 60 year old woman who is in charge of the track activity could not believe this Arabian filly had been involved because she had been so consistently cool.

Another reason for candles... I wish I knew the name of the quarter horse. I'm so sorry to pass this along but it is one way to relieve the tears. I know you will share them.

I haven't read today's posts, so I hope Butterfly Dreams has been reported okay, and I know Brother Derek and Bob and John are probably nursing injured egos but will be in the winner's circle again, beautiful horses all.

Shelley A -

I had intended to thank you earlier for explaining the "green" horse behavior at the track, and hope you got the message that Comic Review, the horse who hit the rail and catapulted last weekend at Golden Gate Fields, was only seriously bruised. How fragile life is, how grateful for those who survive to run another day if that is what they love to do.

And so grateful for all your efforts toward passage of the Anti-Slaughter bill. At least we have enlightened senators here in California... have to work on the other states.

Shelly

that is indeed a very tragic story. My girls, one a QH/Arabian and the other a QH, will greet both at the Bridge. Seems fitting, doesn't it?

You are right that sharing tears doesn't really relieve sadness but it sure is comforting. You just never know when the inexplicable might happen. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for little Arabian fillies/mares. They're almost dainty. I hope this girl's owner and trainer aren't beating themselves up about this. There just is no good explanation. If there is any good to be garnered by any of this, it is that she didn't suffer, and that the riders are okay. There is just so much tragedy in the world of horses, isn't there?

Sorry to hear of that tragic accident. It's true, it just takes a few seconds for something to go horribly wrong. Even the most sensible horse can do something totally out of character and cause a disaster.

Hello Barbaro family...

Barbaro...ACN...Thank you God...

Alex...thanks for the FAQ section, terrific info for us budding horse fans...

Foggy and Greg Gilchrist...remember when things didn't look so good for Barbaro? I recall the Jacksons saying something like: "Barbaro's alive, and he's acting like he wants to go on living, so we're going to help him go on living"...having read the article on LITF and Greg's words, stay positive, miracles are happening...Foggy is now in team Barbaro's prayers as are you...

I'm lighting candles now thanks to someone providing the web site...www.gratefulness.org, thanks again.

wishing Barbaro and Foggy ACN.

Thanks, Pammie ... I hadn't heard back from Bill Nelson regarding his position on this bill, but I am very glad to read that he sponsors it!! Great! But he's a Democrat, so I'm not at all surprised! Oops!!

This is going to be the week for a full-court press for anti-slaughter legislation...I heard from Sen. Bill Nelson of Fl...who supports the measure hands down...

Thank you for your thoughts, Pamela and Cheryl. It does seem a true statement about so much tragedy in this world of horses, and the more you know about this world, the more tragedy there is... The only consoling factor is that, hopefully, the more consciousness there is, the better the conditions we can actually affect. For those other conditions such as this track accident - I don't know... it is hard to justify in the name of entertainment, but once again this was a very happy horse, doing what she apparently loved to do. Everyone who came in contact with her knew how special she was, so we have heard.

Very tough world, emotionally.

Shelley in CA ... Such a tragic story about the Arabian/Quarterhorse accident. How does this happen? Well, both beautiful souls are now with all of the other Horse Angels who have welcomed them with their own open hearts.

God Bless Them All ... May they fly high and free in Heaven!!

Shelley in CA,

What a horrible accident and such sorrow for everyone involved. I'm saddened by these tragic stories - wish that somehow they wouldn't happen.

SHELLY IN CA...I am in tears from the tragic accident you reported. My prayers go out to you, Puff's Magic Dragon and the quarter horse that had to be put down. Prayers also to everyone who had witnessed such an awful heartbreaking sight.

LINNIE...I will email you the link to the Picture It program. And, I will try my best to explain how to cut, paste and all that happy stuff LOL.

SUE H...thanks for your nice words about the book and me. Honestly....without you guys, there would not be a book...thanks for caring.

ELIZABETH...I'll keep you aware of the progress of the book.

JEANETTE C...yea, the pic of Bobby with his nose in the roses is definitely "HIM" and that will be the cover of the book. Where did you buy yours? I may buy one, scan it and place it on the cover..not unless I am not allowed to...don't know that much and don't need to be getting in trouble copying a pic LOL.
