    Barbaro Updates: 65

    updates are now here.

Update 597: Another comfortable day for Barbaro. Just spoke to Peter Brette who had heard from Michael Matz, who visited Bobby this afternoon.

Update 596: Returning to Fair Hill, I had three more to ride after the break. Two of which were nicely uneventful, one of which was intent to try to remove me from the saddle (rearing, leaping and lunging). Fortunately luck prevailed, although I had to apologise for some colourful language. Tim breezed Red Aspen and Gator Nation after the break on the woodchips. Tim was on Red Aspen and Jesus Bracho (Fair Hill's resident jockey) was on Gator Nation. The 5/8ths breeze seemed to go well for all concerned.

Perhaps slightly off topic (perhaps not), but it seems the animal world lost a real hero and advocate, Steve Irwin: A Huge Loss to the Animal World. One of you had recently written to Steve about the Wild Animal Sanctuary closure in Colorado: The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado is being forced to close it's doors. Lets hope Steve's tremendous legacy continues!

Update 595: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (sunday night). I saw Michael Matz as I was on my way to the woodchip track for my third set. He had heard from Dr. Richardson, who has now returned from his vacation.

Mondays are usually a little chaotic at the track, many horses have had the sunday off and are pretty "fresh". Given the weather we had saturday, quite a few horses will have had two days off. This monday did include a loose horse early on the woodchip track. I cannot name the rider, she said she would not speak to me again if I did, but all was well. Barclay Tagg (who must be in town just for the day) caught the horse by the gap (it was not one of his). I asked Barclay again about Funny Cide, he said they had him thoroughly checked over and he seems fine.

I also caught up with Graham Motion, and asked him for a job. His immediate response "What happened ?" I then mentioned I just wanted to go with Better Talk Now to the Melbourne Cup. I tried to convince him that he really needs someone on his team with Melbourne Cup experience (I know where the closest bar to the paddock is located etc.) He smiled. It seems they will make a decision in the next couple of days about running, there are a few things they need to sort through before a decision to run can be made. It will certainly be a very sporting venture if they do go.
    update 8:20 am, september 4

Update 594: Bo Derek was on ABC yesterday discussing the Anti Horse-Slaughter legislation: Perfect '10' Actress Rallies for Horses, she even makes reference to Barbaro in her short clip. The vote on this issue is scheduled for September 7, so this will be a busy week. The discussion boards are very active on this issue.

It looks more and more likely that Better Talk Now will be pointed for the Melbourne Cup: Better Talk Now pointed for Melbourne Cup. I need to see if I can get a job with Graham! What a great adventure this would be. I witnessed Makybe Diva's first Melbourne Cup victory, and having been to many races around the world, this was my most memorable racing experience.

It does beg the question, why don't US-based horses compete for the Melbourne Cup. A couple of reasons might include, timing (its the same week as the Breeders Cup), and the distance of the race (its way too far for many of the horses in the US who are used to a mile and a half being an absolute marathon). Anyway, the Melbourne Cup is known as the race that stops a nation (it actually stops two nations when you include New Zealand). It is so refreshing to see how our sport really can be capture the imagination of countries in such a significant way, if only for a day.

We have been voted with a Yeah (I thought that was pretty cool)! The Barbaro update this morning may be a little late, I am not sure. It is Labor Day, but this does not impact training horses, i.e. Fair Hill will be business as usual. That being said, it might be tough for me to get the update up until a little later.

Good morning, Bobby, and a Happy Labor Day to all! :) Hope you have another good day, Bobby, will be lighting my daily candle for you! Enjoy the beautiful sunshine and green grass!

    Barbaro,

Happy Labor Day! Say Champ, I'm sure you've given political aspirations a passing thought as a second career, but today might be a good time to think what an effective change agent you could be as a LABOR ORGANIZER! You guys could really use a "racer's union" what an upside for equine pros all over the country.

It would be just like you, our hero, Barbaro, to make such a sacrifice...but on second thought I want you to forget all about it. It's just to dangerous a business, organizing workers for better conditions. I couldn't stand worrying about you, you see Bobby, the history of labor attempting to organize is one of our country's bloodiest chapters. Ten Mining organizers were hanged in Pennsylvania! Ouch, that's too close for comfort!

Bobby, forget what I said, just stick to the grazing and the stud work: it's fun, it's safer, pays good, and you won't have a care in the world. Just follow orders.

    Love you Champ!

A Happy Labor Day to everyone and I hope you enjoy a day of R & R. To those who won't have a day off to enjoy - bless you!

Congratulations Alex for the Yeah award - and to be top of the list!

This week is an important week for all of us. Let's hope and pray that the anti-slaughter legislation is finally passed putting this horrible practice behind us. Keep in mind though, it will only end it in this country and will continue in others as long as there is a demand. Perhaps we should try to convince the consumers (European countries) that it's time to take horsemeat off their menus. Where there is no demand - there will be no production.

Barbaro, LITF and team Barbaro - have a wonderful day!!

    Good Morning Barbaro and all:

Just went to the link that Alex posted about "Bo Derek," and there are some negative remarks. Perhaps, some can go and post our support for the horses, not the person.

This week will mean alot of writing for many, but that is an opportunity for us to start posting at every opportunity available.

Sorry if I was supposed to put ####, but this is related to an important issue.

Posted by: Socorro at September 4, 2006 10:54 AM

Congratulations to Alex for the YEAH (see update)...a well-deserved recognition for all he does for us and for all horse-related issues!!!

Barbaro - are you awake yet, or sleeping in because of the holiday? I pray for you to have ACD and maybe grazin' in the grass if the mud has dried up! Be nice to Dr. Dean when you see him...he really needed a vacation because you've been "high maintenance"...but who deserves it more that you? Love you, sweet courageous boy!

Foggy - hope you had ACN too...and you keep showing Mr. Gilchrist & Mr. Aleo that you want to live, just like Barbaro has shown his people. God bless you for your determination and for success with your upcoming chemo - you are a beautiful child of God!

Love to God's exquisite equines...known and unknown to us!

Thank you Alex for so much-- all week traveling I've checked the site, thought of how much you have done

thinking too about all the wonderful people surrounding Barbaro and also LITF, owners, trainers, jockey, everyone, made me want to recommend a book I loved SWEET WILLLIAM by John Hawkes. It's unique, told from a former race horse's point of view which might sound strange but I couldn't put it down-- a look at just how important it is where a horse ends up. It touches on so many of the things we've talked of, kindness, slaughter-- you have to read it.

Also a new book, EROS AND EQUUS: A PASSION FOR THE HORSE. Incredible photographs and short pieces

-- it is by Laura Chester and is simply beautiful

    Happy Labor Day

Good Morning Precious Barbaro, I hope you had another comfortable night and I hope you got to see Dr. Dean. Looks like sun today so I am sure you will be outside, maybe see your goat. I love you, heal and grow. I will be keeping a check on you.

Sweet Warrior Foggy, I hope you had a painfree sleep. Eat good and take your meds, you will beat this. I love you and will keep a check on you.

Thanks so much for the yeahs & neighs website. From that site I finally found a workable link to my US Representative. I have sent a letter urging him to vote for HR 503.

Also, the letter the Jacksons sent.."Would you eat Barbaro", must have been very moving. The actual thought makes me sick!

Speaking of Barbaro, I hope he had a wonderful night and enjoys his Monday. Has anyone been to visit lately? Any stories?

Socorro...just got home and read your post.

This is steeplechasing, yes it's big in this country and I don't watch it because of those things that horrified you. I watched one race last week, thought I'd see if there was a race where a horse and rider didn't fall, but three horses fell. I watched in horror as one struggled on the ground, willing it to get up, and it was only during the replays when a different camera angle was shown that I saw the jockey eventually get the horse to its feet. I don't know if it was injured...but horses aren't built to fall this way.

So, once again, my heart was in my throat...I won't watch steeplechasing any more.

    So...how's our Barbaro this afternoon?

Posted by: Jo (UK) at September 4, 2006 12:06 PM

-gee, Alex, 'all the credit you deserve..' -and that doesn't even mention our Nobels! Don't knock the wall before your grain ration, you'll get all the credit you deserve when the Time comes :) -on a *slightly* more fretful note, though, are you really looking for a new job? I wouldn't doubt it, but it's probably the same sort of joke a lot of the contributors seem to make here.. An especially Happy Labor Day, then, when all or most should be able to relax, guilt-free (while JUST a Few of US WORK...) Best wishes, †KAWilson

oooh. A runaway horse; that is bad. Did anyone try looking right at the creature and talking it back to the right place? I did that once with a flight-y, runaway horse named, as I recall, Sheba, in the early-ish 1980's, one evening at the Northfield-Mt. Hermon School. A memorable experience, and, worth trying, if the horse quite rightly respects the person who does it. Something for your 'little black [barn] bag', anyway. Best wishes, †KAWilson

Great to hear Barbaro had ACN. Wishing him all the best.

Keeping LITF in my thoughts and many others that don't get the recognition. Wouldn't it be great if all horses at least had one great race in their lifetime.

There was a program that showed Funny Cide winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Amazing win, by almost 10 lenghts! Unfortunately, they were speaking Arabic, but watching the race was still great.

    #####

    Jo (UK),

Thank you for telling me the type of racing that was. Why would anyone race their horse in that type of race?

It puts the jockey and horse at risk with no doubt.

###-and by the way (though I assume quasi-rational people know this): 'talking' a high-bred, valuable, flying. escaped horse back to a barn two fields away is NOT a trick to be tried at home, so to speak. But, when open fields, nearby busy roads beckon, and the only thing a group of (pre- cell phone) people who are accosted by such an animal can do is try to contact authorities to shut down traffic, tranquilize the animal, etc. etc., the'easy way' is worth trying, first. Sometimes, a very well-trained horse -or even one with innate good will and intelligence- will respond EXACTLY as Sheba did. But as anyone with animals KNOWS, you better be quick with this, and RIGHT ON. I recall there was an instructor present, with the group, whose name was Ann. She couldn't believe that one of her otherwise not-so-talented elementary dressage students (me) did this. And when we got back to Sheba's barn, (running -not as fast as Sheba was, though!) and she was safely tucked in by the hapless barn worker who had left her door open, Ann started on the Arab mare again, with B-a-d girl, Sheba.. and of course, that was -the Wrong thing for then; -the Bad Moment was ..Past. No, Ann, I said. Sheba is a Good Girl now..Anyway, with horses or any animal -their innate Nobility, a Given- try the Noble Way first (well, no. that's wrong; you might FIRST Pray and Work to see this never happens). -anyway, try Word, if it does happen. It can prove the best and easiest way Home... Best wishes, †KAWilson

Sweet Bobby, ACN for you. Still on a high from the report from Saturday, when Dr. Dean said he had rising optimism and the cast on your right leg might be taken off very soon!!

Alex, YEAH!!!!! and keeping fingers crossed for the Melbourne Cup.

    Kathleen,
All I know is, I was grazing a horse at Delaware Park in 100+ degree heat and dropped him when I
almost passed out. He took off so fast there was no way to talk him back...Luckily another trainer brought him back.
    #######
    Sharonlynn,
This is sad news about Steve Irwin, I agree.
My condolences go out to Terry, Bindi, Bob, and the rest of his family.

ACN for our boy Bobby, is wonderful news. Its the kind I long to hear everyday for you Big Ole Boy!! :)
I love you so very much and wish you to feel constantly better every waking day.

Foggy-you are so beautiful. I just looked at Barbara Livingston's pix of you, and you are just marvelous! I saw you running on a clip on tv the other day, but could barely see you. I think you are a very precious being and pray you will be feeling ok during your chemo, you poor baby.

To Steve Irwin's family,Terri,Bindi, Bob, it is a horrible tragedy to lose your daddy. I am still coping with the sudden loss of my mom years ago. It is awful to go thru alone, with support of family and friends it is so much easier to get thru the days. I pray for your continued well being.

Mike Rea and family, I pray you have continued good health and healing all the way around! You guys have been thru so much and need a little boost. Good luck!

Top o' the morning to you Alex!...thanx for the update. Glad to hear our baby had ACN. I'd love it if there had been a camcorder out there at Fair Hill this morning. It must have been a sight to see, with all the horses having to be exercised and feeling rather frisky. 'twould be wonderful if you could get to go to the Melbourne Cup, we'd miss you but would be happy that you're happy!

Heyyyyy Barbaro, I'd say rise and shine, but you've probably been up for awhile. Such a good boy you are! ACN! Keep on keeping on, sweet baby, you're walking the walk and we're there right beside you.

    Eat your carrots every day

Grow hoof grow! Heal leg heal!
    That's become our daily appeal

You're our bright and shining star

Have a good day, babycakes. I hope you get to go out with your buddy Dr R for some goood grazing. Will check back later. Hugs and smoochies!

If not where can I find it going forward?..Here is my question..how long does it take to train a horse to race? I imagine it is different for each animal and also depending on the age etc but some gen info on this would be great...again many thanks for all you do....

I don't think the tragic and untimely death of Steve Irwin is an 'off' topic for this site.

He was a light that shown around the world and his zest for life mirrors the countless postings on this website to live life to it's fullest.

I loved his enthusiasm and energy. He was genuine. What you saw, was what you got. He didn't adlib for the camera, but truly believed he could make a difference for conservation, the environment and educating THE WORLD about even the ugliest and most dangerous creatures that share this planet with humans.

He brought an awareness of the animal kingdom to young and old alike that can never be replaced. He wasn't afraid to face death and in doing so, he gave life and living a new meaning. Just a phenominal soul that will be greatly missed!

May his family and friends be comforted with so many memories and continue his life's work and reach out to all those he touched.

    Jennifer,
Not stepping on any toes here.
I guess the proper term would be pensioned for Funny Cide, since he can't be a stud, obviously.
I hope they have given it some thought, I have too much respect for Kentucky Derby winners to see him being dropped down.
If Sackatoga Stable has a farm for him, great, even better, send him to a Kentucky farm where his fans could go to see him...and we would.

Good morning, all, glad to have a non-labor day to pursue all these more passionate interests... Speaking of such, the world will miss the passionate Steve Irwin and hopefully his legacy will continue. He was an incredible showman with a cause for the greatest good. He harnessed the media to help pull that wagon, and would that we had such a representative for horses!

Edgar Prado is riding at Saratoga in a few minutes in the Grade I Hopeful, astride Unbridled Express. These are the two year olds who may be the three year old stars of tomorrow. Only five horses running, though. Edgar did win the last race going away on Delta Sea...

Have a peaceful day, our big boys Barbaro and Fog. Fall is in the air, the sun is getting lighter and shadows longer.

ALEX: Perhaps slightly off topic (perhaps not), but it seems the animal world lost a real hero and advocate, Steve Irwin: A Huge Loss to the Animal World....>>

No it's not off topic. He was a great advocate for animals, as we all are here.. It's very sad.

If you go to the link provided by Susan E...(I was able to access the article after typing in horse slaughter then clicking on sports...go figure)...you will find it hard to escape the mindset presented by the pro-slaughter brigade...here is an exerpt...

    "Get past the emotions"

But Charles Stenholm, the horse industry's lobbyist, said these complaints are purely emotional. Stenholm, a former West Texas congressman and Democrat, said lawmakers will get past that and defeat the bill.

"It's looking better every day as more and more people get the facts, once they get past the emotions and think about the welfare of the horse," he said.

Gee guys, did you know that our problem is we are too emotionally involved with these animals?
I guess the Europeans are too because these slaughter houses are illegal there...gosh...there must be something going around...LIKE COMPASSION MAYBE!

    ALEX,
Thanks for posting the info in regard to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado! Our thoughts and prayers are with Steve's Family.

    Also,
I thought I would mention that I had A LOT of tech problems over the past few days and finally was able to fix them and get back online. With that said, it gave me some time to reflect on everything that has been going on since the Preakness...and was inspired to create a video dedicated to Alex and Tim for all they have done to bring us all together to FIRST - KEEP US UPDATED ON BARBARO WHILE ALLOWING US TO COME TOGETHER TO PRAY/SEND POSITIVE ENERGY FOR BARBARO, SECOND - SHARE OUR THOUGHTS WITH ONE ANOTHER IN REGARD TO WHY BARBARO HAS CAPTIVATED US AND THE NATION, THIRDLY - TO REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN LIGHT OF...(OH YEAH...FINALLY - Alex has been great at educating us on EVERYTHING TO DO WITH HORSERACING!!!!):0)!

THANK YOU ALEX AND TIM. I KNOW IT CAN'T BE EASY DOING ALL YOU DO. THAT BEING SAID, WM & CL referenced a song and wrote a beautiful tribute to Barbaro. I couldn't get that song and vision out of my head ever since.
Thus... IF ANYONE WANTS TO VIEW THE VIDEO, I'VE POSTED IT UNDER "POEMS/VIDEOS" in the discussion forum.

An article today on bloodhorse.com, regarding a new poll showing 69% of Americans against slaughter, includes the fact that: "Two major supporters of the bill are T. Boone and Madeleine Pickens. On Aug. 30, they began running full-page ads in USA Today, The Dallas Morning News, San Antonio Express-News, and San Diego Union Tribune asking the public to contact their lawmakers about the bill."

Not sure if everyone was aware of this effort...but hope many readers will also take action after seeing the ads.

Gosh guys...this makes me so mad I can't stand it...but we have to speak for the horses and THIS IS THE WEEK TO DO IT....

The deadline approaches...PLEASE...call, write to our congress...many sites include easy methods for doing so...it only takes seconds!

Just in case you need a little more motivation...

    Here is another exerpt...

Once the horses are unloaded, they're lined up to go through a "knock box," where a bolt is shot from a hammer into the back of each horse's head. The bolt immediately renders the horse brain-dead, Tucker said.

"In fact, it's rather amazing to see a horse go down, because it's instantaneous."

Gee...can you tell this guy loves his job!

These are OUR horses...in OUR country...we are ripping apart the fabric of our heritage so someone can dine on what they consider a delicacy...OUR HORSES...

If it is such a good thing..why is it illegal to perform these acts in their own countries...

Please, I urge you to act NOW...these people are selling our soul for a lousy buck!

It's kind of strange that proslaughter advocates have tried to pass horse slaughter off as thinking about the WELFARE of the horse??? Thats a strange little spin that I guess proslaughter people use to try to get support from folks who don't understand really whats going on with the horse slaughter industry or they have made themselves believe that to ease their conscious. I hope and pray that nasty business ends!! Good luck in Washington!

***HR 503 Press Conference, Jacksons will speak***

Lead cosponsors of the bill, Reps. Ed Whitfield (R-KY), Rep. John Sweeney (R-NY), Rep. John Spratt (D-NC) and Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV) will hold a press conference Tuesday, September 5th at 11:30 pm in room 121 of the Cannon House Office Building. Please note that this is a change from
the original announcement that the press conference would be held at 1:30 in room HC-8 of the Capitol.

Several owners of Kentucky Derby winners, including the owner of Barbaro, will speak. Respected Texas oilman Boone Pickens and his wife Madeleine, a longtime horsewoman, will also be heard.

The bill, in one form or another, has been bottled up in the House Agriculture Committee at least nine years. The bill has over 200 bipartisan cosponsors, with scores of other members committed to vote for its passage.

Whoa: the Croc Hunter died?? I just turned CNN on. I know when I first started watching Steve I thought he was a bit crazy. Then I realized that what I had mistakenly taken for crazy was passion. Say what you want but this man was passionate about animals and our environment. He was passsionate about snakes--okay so I'm not so into snakes. But he wanted us to know about the world we live in.

I guess I'm just reeling from the surprise.

Alex you have nothing to apologize for. I'm not sure you can say anything that I haven't either heard or said on more than one occasion myself.

    Hola Barbaro Nation,

I am so impressed by all the maniacs fighting against slaughter. Pam, I hear your call to arms I am ready. I am writing form letters for all my friends, finding phone numbers and annoying them til they do something. The Barbaro effect grows.

Our Champ continues to give us ACN's and LITF has possibilities that give us hope. These are blessings.

I am very sad though about Steve Irwin. I saw him in action when he went to Florida to swim with and film Manatees. There were hundreds of people watching and his love and dedication for animals was palpable. He was one of the leading animal activists in the world and an all around fun, great guy.

Barbaro que tengas un buen dia.

    HR503

Willie Nelson is advocating to save our wild horses from the slaughter.

I had a woman say to me last week, "You know, I am not against slaughter. Wild horses need to be culled, and I'm not against having farms for horse slaughter purposes. After all, they're just herd animals anyway." And..."The only problem is Americans won't eat the meat."

    OF COURSE WE WON'T!!!!!!!!!!

I guess she never saw how wild stallions stay with their mares and foals to protect them from danger.

HORSES ARE MUCH, MUCH MORE THAN HERD ANIMALS!

    Hello Barbaro family,

What a shock about Steve Irwin. What a loss for animal lovers everywhere.

Someone reported on the Blood Horse article which states that 69% of Americans support the ban of the horse slaughterhouses. In all honesty - that percentage surprises me. I would have thought the percentage to be higher. That means that 3 out of 10 people favor them???? How awful!

If HR 503 was voted on solely in the state of Texas, believe me it would not pass. If those that are interested would go to the forum, the list of Texas reps (26) and their DC phone numbers is listed there. It is too late for letters. Please call them. Tell them the light is shining on this dirty little secret - that you won't go to Texas to vacation, that it should be an embarrassment to the state (2 slaughterhouses here)whatever you feel you should say. I was told these guys are listening to the American Vet Med Assoc, and the American Assoc of Equine Practitioners - both of these organizations are against HR 503! Also, the USDA seems to be in bed with these slaughterhouses.

Sorry for the long post - this just hurts my spirit. More info on the forum.

Question your reps that are against HR503 - ask them - what happens to this part of the bill?

I am originally from the east coast, and after 12 years here in the west I have my property up for sale. The leading reason I can't take it here anymore is the attitude towards animals - ALL animals.

I just read about the death of Steve Irwin on this website. I am totally stunned and deeply saddened. What an amazing human being he was!!!! If you look up "enthusiasm" in the dictionary, it has to mention Steve. He was larger than life, a loving person and an incredible personality. He has a beautiful family, who will need all our thoughts and prayers for a long time to come.

As Janet posted earlier today, "Steve Irwin is a phenominal soul who will be greatly missed"; so tragic, just heartbreaking. Hard to imagine the world without him......

I was happy to hear ACN again today for our beloved Barbaro. Keep piling up the ACN's boy, and before you know it, that cast will be off!! Yea!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad Dr. R is back, too. Hoping he had a fun break and got a chance to rest. He surely deserves it, for all he and his staff have done to bring Barbaro to this point in his recovery. We love you, Dr. R, and all the good people of NBC! Barbaro loves you, too!

To the Jacksons, Michael, Peter, Dr. Anderson, Alex, Tim, Edgar, and everyone else at Fair Hill who has loved Barbaro with all their heart, have a very Happy Labor Day! Barbaro is with us and he is doing so well! God Bless you all. Judy

    How to contact a Congressman/Congresswoman:

At this point it might be easiest for you to google "House of Representatives Members". That will put you on to the site and just click on 'members'. Find the rep for your district, click on his/her name, and it will give you their Washington phone numbers or faxes. Almost all of them will not do the email thing. Call on Sept.7th.

    Cindy A -

It's rural in Northern NM. Animals are looked upon as - if you can't make money from them or if they can't do your work for you or if you can't consume them, then they are worthless. There is very little 'companion animal' attitude in these parts. Only people that move here from other parts of the country have a 'companion animal' respect. It is almost overbearing here.

Margie, When I visit my daughter in northern New Mexico I see alot of poverty there. Where there is poverty animals often come second or rather last as I'm sure you know. Poor people in Brazil think it's really weird that we Americans will spend thousands of dollars on a sick cat. And, I'm not saying that all "poor" people treat their animals badly, I'm just saying that I can understand it not being a priority.

MARIBEL, RE YOUR QUERY RE HR503 INFO AND " IS THERE ANYTHING WE CANADIANS CAN DO TO HELP???
    I FEEL SO HELPLESS !!!!!!!!"

YES! It is my understanding that there are slaughterhouses in Canada, and that many use horses exported from the US, especially from the high plains border states. Canadian citizens need to be made aware of the presence and practices of these slaughterhouses, for a start. Hopefully your Parliament will ban the transport, sale, etc. of equines for slaughter for human consumption.

We need to dry up the source by outlawing it and creating citizen opposition, which will lead to the permanent closing of these places. Putting these issues out into the light of day for public scrutiny is the first step.

Another wonderful day. Barbaro remains comfortable, and the Fog has a chance (lots of advances being made) and I remain hopeful.

CLOSING DAY AT SARATOGA - and EDGAR WRAPS IT UP! (with 46 wins)

Did everybody see that EDGAR PRADO won top jockey at Saratoga JUST NOW? He was in a close contest with Garrett Gomez, and both had some great rides today. Especially - GG on Circular Quay in the 4th - VERY IMPRESSIVE, from 15 lengths behind, dead last, and WON IT RUNNING AWAY! Then in the 5th Edgar had a glorious ride with Iron Goddess - living up to her name. MORE LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH.

But just now in the 8th at Saratoga, EDGAR CLINCHED IT!

    GO EDGAR!

This is not about racing, but everybody should know that the finals of the Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration were cancelled because 5 of the 8 finalists had been 'sored'--their feet and/or pasterns had been deliberately injured to make them step higher.

Maribel, this thing is much, much , MUCH bigger than President Bush. The powers that be years ago allowed this to happen and throwing him into it just because you think your own PM is a "Bush Clone" isn't going to solve any problems. If the House passes this, and the Senate passes it, he will sign it.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri at September 4, 2006 9:43 PM

It's been my experience in dealing with Politicians is that they listen to two things, $$$$ and thier OWN constituents. I have written to my own congressman regarding HR 503. He may be receiving hundreds of letters from accross the country but he's going to listen to mine much more than any others. The bottom line is to contact your OWN representatives. Call their offices, they keep track of phone calls from their own constituents. I will be calling my Rep tomorrow.

A little history - when I lived in France in the 1960's one could easily buy horsemeat at the butcher. I don't know what the law is now in France around horsemeat but in those days it did provide meat for poorer families. The family I lived with never bought it. Now the problem as I see it, for many countries, including the US, is not so much that horse slaughter exists as WHY it exists. My opinion is irresponsible breeding, over-breeding and "throw-away horses" from the race track, from the wild horses, etc.

The anti horse slaughter legislation will help as it will throw light on these groups that bring in herds of horses on a regular basis. Could there be laws for breeders, like they're trying to shut down "puppy farms", can irresponsible horse breeding farms be shut down?

In light of Steve Irwin's death, I would like to take this opportunity to mention that I, along with several others on this site, have been made aware of a dire situation in Colorado. The Wild Animal Sanctuary there is being forced to close it's doors and approximately 150 animals, including lions, tigers, and bears, will have to either be placed in new homes or euthanized. I feel that supporting this sanctuary would be a wonderful way to honor Steve's work which was a big part of his life. I am not one to ask people for support for anything, but this is something that has weighed on me since I read about it. When I saw their video, which is at www.wildanimalsanctuary.org/closure, I knew that my mission was clear. I simply ask that you go to this web site and view this video and you will see what I mean. Just click on "View closing video". Steve would have wanted to help this facility and save these animals. Many of us are making donations to the facility in his honor and we have even suggested that they add his name to the facility's name. Thanks to all who are will ing to help and God be with the Irwin family.

    ### Well, He did veto stem cell research

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at September 4, 2006 10:05 PM

I believe that Bush limited the amount of FEDERAL dollars going to stem cell research. He didn't stop private enterprises from doing stem cell research.

Posted by: Sarah at September 4, 2006 10:07 PM

    ####

Bonnie, no, he didn't veto stem cell research, he was against embryonic stem cell research and that didn't is what didn't get funded. The Adult stem cell research got piles of money and that is where the future is right now. To put it in horse racing terms...

Adult Stem Cell research is going into the far turn while embryonic stem cell research still has its tail stuck in the gate.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri at September 4, 2006 10:09 PM

    ############

There is more money going to stem cell research now than there ever was. The money wasn't limited. YOu have to make the distinction between embryonic and Adult. Adult is when you take stem cells from adults and Embryonic is when you take stem cells from an embryo, which then kills it. That is what he was/is against.

Bonnie, thats a part of what I wanted to talk about, I am concerned that when the bill passes that even though they cant slaughter for consumption, they are still going to be slaughtering. I dont think it will really slow them down. With the situations you just mentioned, plus the injured, old, unwanted and infirm horses. There is still going to be a slaughterhouse. So where are the 90 thousand horses that are being slaughtered a year going to go? I am concerened if we cant find homes for these beautiful animals at a wildlife sanctuary or victims of Katrina, What in the world are we going to do with these poor babies being sent to these places? Has anyone posted thoughts on this stuff? I dont want to be a downer, but I still think that the slaughterhouse will be active and like Bonnie pointed out I hope there are followup considerations.

    #### I should have qualified my statement that Bush limited the amount of federal $ going to EMBRYONIC stem cell research.

    Anti-slaugher bill:

For what it's worth, from everything I've read, Bush is expected to sign, so I don't think we have to worry about a veto.

Posted by: Sarah at September 4, 2006 10:17 PM

Laura that is why I brought up the idea that foreign companies are allowed to be in this country. They are not subject to our laws and therefore dont have to abide by them. That needs to be fixed.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri at September 4, 2006 10:18 PM

    ################################

Sarah, that would be more accurate, but still not all the truth. The Feds hadn't ever given money to embryonic stem cell research. The scientists and schools and whoever complained that they were not getting enough money from private corporations wanted the money from the government. Those 56 or 57 stem cell lines were the first embryo stem cell lines to recieve funding.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri at September 4, 2006 10:21 PM

    Laura,

I suppose after HR 503 it will become apparent what the next step will be. I hate to develop more laws, but it seems some group needs to be developed that over-sees horse breeding farms. Many people who buy horses for their kids are not aware of the amount of time & money it requires to keep a horse, so these horses are eventually "sent away". How can that be changed? Raising people's consciousness! HR 503 is doing some of that!

I've been to a horse burial, it's alot of work to bury a horse, not something the average person can do. Our local large animal vet has referrals for people with an aged or injured horse, but it's expensive. So, I say go to the source and help educate people so they know what they're getting into when buying a horse.

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at September 4, 2006 10:22 PM

The President also limited the embryonic stem cell research to the a certain amount lines that were already in the research bank, not allowing new lines to be introduced in the USA. There was news last week that a breakthrough might have been reached that stem cells may be able to be removed from a embryo without destroying it, thus allowing new lines a a HUGE ray of hope and light for millions in search of discoveries. Hopefully they will have confirmation soon that it will work for sure. (I hope I got all that right without looking it up)

Lynda: You are CORRECT! I had forgotten all the details. Yes, Bush is the FIRST president to allow any FEDERAL funding of embryonic stem cell research ... and it was related to those existing lines.

Re: HR 503 The Jacksons, Barbaros owners, sent personal letters to each of the US Congressmen, in support if HR 503. In that letter they said, "Would you eat Barbaro?" They really pulled no punches. Any congressman who votes against the bill will neeed to do so with that in his/her awareness.

To those kind folks posting questions on where the 90,000 horses would go... Horse slaughter is all about money. Foreign corporate profits. First, a depressing % of horses taken to slaughter are rustled. Proof: In CA, horse rustling went down something like 40% when they passed a state ban on hourse slaughter. A TX legislator had a herd of his own stolen to slaughter, and even as angry as he was, he was still unable to get anti-slaughter legislation passed. Other horses are sold to kill buyers who mislead the owners, pretending the older horses are going to so-called "rescue" organizations. So it's a false argument that all of those horses are unwanted. In fact, most of the horses you see are perfectly fit. Think about it -- prime is not from the aged or the infirm.

Other surveys put the anti-slaughter public sentiment closer to 80% As to the numbers killed, no one knows how many (or few)of the 90,000 are willingly sold to kill buyers each year. Not stolen or lied about. BUT we have dropped from OVER 300,000 horses sold to slaughter each year to under 90,000. Somehow we managed those extra 210,000 without a major crisis. One other argument you hear: It's simply not fair to say horses not slaughtered could be abused. We have laws to deal with animal abuse. Killing the victim hardly seems like a better choice than prosecuting the abusers.

Let's keep the faith on the home stretch with this. For the horses! -- Peace, Susan in Saratoga

You got the Mit Nachas part 100% right. And perfect usage as well - Kvelling Mit Nachas for the latest great accomplishment of our beloved Edgar Prado.

How to Cuss at a Horse (as needed)

Alex, in update 596 today, talks about having to apologize for "colorful language" today, when his ride mightily tried to unseat him. My old riding instructor Arthur Konyot (grandfather of dressage contender Tina Konyot), when he had occasion to verbally vent at a misbehaving horse, used the phrase "Schweinhund!" (pig-hound)

Happy Labor Day to all. As I spent the day with my family I reflected on what Barbaro's journey has done for me. As I picked up nick nacks in the local goody shop paying close attention to the "horse" related items, I realized that Barbaro has increased my awareness of horses in general. This is the Barbaro Effect at its purest. To take a "non-horsey" person like me and infuse the love of these animals into their everyday spirit. This is why the anti-slaughter bill will pass. It's because "ordinary people" who have spent their days up to now not thinking about this issue now think of it because of Barbaro and this site. Thank you to everyone. I am starting a new book called "The Chosen Horse" that I would've never read had it not been for Barbaro's journey. I feel like my eyes are opening to a whole new world.

But here is a very simple question ... It's not important whether or not Pres. Bush loves horses or not ... actions speak louder than words ... so, can you or anyone else just answer this very simple question:

Is Pres. Bush supporting the ban on the slaughter of horses or not?

Can someone just give me a "Yes" or "No" on this based on FACT, not conjecture?

Very true about Steve Irwin, not only to the animal world he brought to life to the eyes of children but in many facets of the Wild Animal Kingdom.

Our prayers are with his Wife and Children at this time of great loss.

Many people may have thought he was a bit extreme but he was a great advocate to the animal world and as he once said would like to be remembered for his enthusiasm...

Sad news about Steve Irwin...very shocking. Speaking of animal sites closing down, the Catskill Game Farm in Catskill, NY is closing it's doors. No longer will families be able to visit & learn about the world's wildlife. All the animals will go to auction this month. Animal rights groups worry the unusual collection may go to game farms where they are shot in pens, rather than retired & protected.

Dear Father, Hear & bless thy beasts & singing birds, and guard with tenderness small things that have no words. Amen.

What I'm seeing tonight on this blog is if you live in Texas, you love horses. That logic worries me because, is there not slaughter houses in Texas? So living in Texas, or being from Texas is not the end-all to the person's position on HR 503.
And this issue is also about business. People are making money off of the slaughter of horses. Those people will fight tooth-and-nail not to lose their business/ monetary interest.
So does anyone have knowledge as to the WH position? Not what you think...but REAL knowledge...?
Were the Texas slaughter houses allowed into Texas during Bush's governship?
Any issues arise regarding the slaughter house during his governship that might give us an idea?

So Glad to come on and see another good day for Barbaro!! Keep up the great work!

Alex, any word on Butterfly Dreams? I have not found anything on her yet!

Thank you, Lynda, and I do agree in that Pres. Bush is definitely "Pro Life", so I am hoping that he is also "Pro Life" about this issue also.

Maybe the more intelligent question from me would be this:

Does anyone know how all of the Congressmen/women from TX feel about this issue? Are they 'for' or 'against' the slaughter of horses? Maybe if we knew and understood their positions, we would have a better handle on the situation.

I'm sure that not 'all' of the Florida Congresspeople from the state where I live are in favor of this ban either ... I'm trying to learn more and I'm really curious about TX since it was brought up here ... by the way, not by me, just to set the record straight.

Again, peace and let's move forward to a successful conclusion on September 7th.

    Linnie,

I dont know exactly what his position is, but i know he really likes horses and he IS prolife, and he has not vetoed anything yet. So those are all good things.

    Dearest, Sweetest Barbaro,

So happy to hear you had ACN last night and ACD today. Also so happy that Dr. Richardson is back with you again as I'm sure you missed him last week!! Get a good night's rest tonight, knowing that so many of us will be praying for you as you sleep. Keep letting your body heal until the day when you can walk out of the ICU for good. I love you fella.

LITF - my continuous prayers are for you as you begin your chemotherapy this week. You are such a beautiful guy and my prayer is always for a miracle for you beating this horriible disease. I know you are a fighter!!! So glad you are surrounded by wonderful people who will go the extra mile and then some to get you better.

Will send emails and will call my representative on HR503 as it breaks my heart that this slaughter goes on. I hate that any animal EVER suffers at man's hands and I have always thought we will have a lot to answer for to God as to how His beloved creatures have been treated by us (usually for money). However, I don't think bashing President Bush, which has become such an easy thing to do, is productive in trying to win people's hearts on this issue.

Thanks to Anna and Nancy for their messages of congratulations to me on the birth of my grandaughter. As I peered through the nursery window this morning, I thought intensely about God's miracles and tied the birth of this baby to the continuing recovery of Barbaro. As we anticipated a healthy baby, I was reminded not everything turns out the way we wish it to be--accidents, illnesses, and other catastrophes can wreak havoc in our lives. Praying for Barbaro all of these weeks has deepened my own beliefsthat with faith, hope and prayers, we can better deal with life's challenges, big and small. Additionally, with the supportand love of family, friends, and even anonymous people communicating online, we develop strength to go forward. I think there are many lessons learned from the "Barbaro effect." Let us all continue to root him on.!!

Don't mean to be negative or offensive, but please stop disparging President Bush about his stand on the slaughter of horses. You don't know his position. You are just assuming his is not against it. That is unfair until you know exactly where he stands. If he wouldn't sign an antislaughter bill into law, I would be the first to roast him.

I can tell you that the people of North Texas are extremely compassionate people when it comes to animals. Please don't put us all in the same basket.

Separate issue? Or do we have trouble?

Those in Texas..any history of legislation that either would have closed the slaughterhouses or "look-the-other-way" that would give us all a little insight?
Did he ever try to close the slaughterhouses as governor?

    Good Evening, Team Barbaro!

This is the big week for the anti-slaughter bill...for those who are there, I admire you so much for taking the action needed to save these beautiful animals. Wish I could be there, but there were family commitments and I had to be with Stormy today...no way around it. I was on him for a few minutes today for the first time and the session was a very intense one. I'll be sending energy down to you during the week.

The Jacksons are showing their class and conviction with their anti-slaughter work. They amaze me...Barbaro has galvanized them as well.

I'm still in shock about Steve Irwin. Have Animal Planet on right now and watching the footage thru tears. Can't help but feel that there is a reason why he left this existence now - but watching the footage, I remember his passion. There is footage of his daughter's birth and the look on his face just reduces me to tears. He loved life and ALL life - what a gift he is. The sad part of me says "its not fair- why do the good die young?" But the spiritual side says "there is a reason...open your heart, open your mind, open your spirit. The answers are there waiting for you...and you will act on them with your words." There is also footage of him and Terri on a beach where dozens of beached whales are dying and its heartbreaking. It brings to mind the whale that swam up the Thames in January who didn't survive. I wrote a song about her (that reduced my UK girlfriend to tears in about 2 seconds from her account.) - just need a melodymaker.

Alex, the "YEAH" is well deserved...saw the site earlier today.

Edgar - your awards are very much deserved. Congratulations on what has been an intense year for you. You are an inspiration.

LITF and Barbaro, you two are amazing to me. Thank you for the lessons you continue to teach us. I love you both, my Long Time Sun and my Crazy Diamond. Its time to rest now. Sleep well, sleep deep and dream of the sunshine and green grass.

BUT no one seems to know his stand on the issue, so let's give him a break. Besides this is a vote for the Congress and Senate. The slaughter houses in Texas have been here for a very long time and certainly not something us Texans are proud of.

    LINNIE, JAN, LYNDA, PATTY, etc.

I have no idea what Mr. Bush's position is on anti-slaughter. Haven't seen or heard a thing. The administration might not have formulated its position yet.

On TWR Forum, there's an entire section devoted to this issue with lots of information and links to other information. There are people there, like Christian, Edie, and DebraWi, who are posting what their various groups have learned in our campaigns thus far, and you can email them, or me, or Kerrie, or anyone else who's posted on this issue in Forum.

Additionally, try Googling HR 503 and/or Anti-Slaughter; you'll find lots of informational websites and news releases.

I think you'll be able to find most of what you're looking for with these methods.

As I posted earlier tonight, let's please don't get sidetracked in Red v. Blue issues. If disagreements start, nothing will get accomplished, the bad guys can win, and TWR comments, forum, and chat may be closed down.

I thought it might help to clear some things up by letting everyone know that this legislation will not prevent horse slaughter...so, for those of you concerned about some side issues that relate to that, horse slaughter would still be legal...the bill is meant to prohibit doing so for the expressed purpose of obtaining their meat for human consumption.

So, I don't think we have to worry about horses over-populating the planet yet...Gee, I didn't mean that to sound sarcastic...You know what I mean...

True Pam but it will also put a big "dent" into the number of horses being sent to the slaughter houses, thus slowly putting them out of business. How many will want to stay open if they can not sell their "product" overseas for human consumption? I got that question today from a reporter with the local tv station. he says in essence, it will put some out of business as most do it for the sell to overseas.. Now to get dog food companies to stop using horsemeat!

Okay horse people, I have a question for you. My husband and I took a drive out to the country today to look at all the horses. We saw what looked to be something like a blindfold over many different horses faces. At first I thought they were like blinkers but after looking more closely, they were complete blindfolds with no openings whatsoever for their eyes. Both my husband and I have never seen this before, and we were both wondering how they see where they're going? Like I said, we saw this on several different horses, in many different pastures. I also have to say, I'm absolutely on Cloud 9! We've been planning on taking this trip for a while now, and my biggest hope was that we'd find some horses in a pasture close to a road where we could pull over, get out and walk up to the fence and a horse or two would come up to me so that I could pet them. Well it happened! We found the most beautiful horses-a couple of bays and a chestnut colored horse. I walked up to the fence, made a little clicking noise and the next thing you know, two of them were right there letting me pet their noses and scratch behind their ears! I was absolutely in heaven!!! I have to say, there's nothing quite like looking into the beautiful brown eyes of a horse. Absolutely melts your heart. While I was petting the bay I was thinking of Barbaro and the chestnut colored horse with quite a striking blaze reminded me so much of Lost in the Fog. I'll remember this day for a long time, that's for sure!

Another comfortable day for our precious boy! Atta boy Barbaro! Now it's time for you to go nighty-night. Get all comfy honey and have sweet dreams. Good night to you sweetheart. Lots of hugs, kisses and nuzzlies to you sweetie pie. I love you Barbaro!

    There will be miracles...

The only money is in selling the meat for human consumption. Without that, there will be no slaughterhouses. The only reason to slaughter is because they can't use drugs to euthanize if they are selling as food.
The slaughterhouses would be out of business

Yes, thank you SO much ShelleyA for your tireless commitment to HR 503. I have emailed and telephoned my rep (happy to say he responded and is on our side!!), have signed petitions and forwarded them on to everyone in my address book and asked them to forward them on so as to inform as many people as possible about this disgusting industry, and have written a heartfelt letter pleading people to get involved and also forwarded that on to as many people as I could. I have also personally written letters to several media personalities in hopes they would address the issue of horse slaughter on their respective shows. Sadly, I have not received one response from any of the media people. Until a few months ago, I was completely unaware horse slaughter was even occurring in this country. I have witnessed horse slaughter on video and have been haunted and deeply disturbed by it since that day, and am compelled (even somewhat obsessed) with bringing about an end, once and for all, to this hideous, despicable industry. I have had a hard time sleeping as I'm so emotionally invested in this issue, and I just don't feel like I've done anywhere near enough. My husband keeps telling me that I've done all that is within my power, but it just doesn't feel like enough. I only hope that all the people I wrote to and sent the petitions to got involved too. I guess that's all one can do. You cannot force people to become involved and I just hope that I've reached a lot of people who were just like me...completely unaware and now that they know, will no longer be able to sit back and just do nothing.

So again, thank you ShelleyA for all your hard work, and thank you to everyone who has worked on this issue. I love you all!

They separated us into states. Only 4 people from PA!!! They want us to combine our meetings tomorrow with everyone from that state instead of individual meetings. So I have a meeting with Senator Spector at noon and Senator Santoum's office at 2PM. I've already met with my congressman.

There are people here from Florida and Texas as well as many other states and they will be "walking the halls" tomorrow afternoon also.

The information that you are all waiting for won't be available until tomorrow. The buses are picking us up for the rally at 8:45AM. After the rally, we are meeting in a room at the Capital and will be given packets of information that will include who is co-sponsoring and who is against this bill.

In the meantime, keep those e-mails and faxes going. I probably won't be home until tomorrow night and I'll try to get those names out to you as soon as I can. Call in day is not until Wednesday so it should be fine.

Here's the suggestion......ask your congressman to vote yes on Thursday. But ask your senators to be co-sponsors cause there's still time for that. Also, ask the senators to make sure, if it is passed on Thursday, that the senate will bring it to a vote BEFORE their next recess in October. That's very important.

Also, ask them all to vote on the original bill WITHOUT the amendments. Be polite, not threatening, and make it a little personal if you can.

We even had role playing in the class tonight with the instuctor being the congressman and senator!! There were about 100 people there tonight.

That's about it for now from DC......I'll have my computer on for a while so if you have any questions, let me know.

Thank you God for the miracle of The Fog, and for his right and perfect healing. Guide, inspire and direct those responsible for him, as Divine Order manifests in his care. Divine Love fills every cell of his body with healing light, and all that does not serve him is now dissolved and dissipated in a right and perfect way. Give him a long and happy life Lord. I just read your post in the chat section. I am not able to post there now, but was wondering if you sent that email to Oprah? She may not be a news person, but remember Oprah in Texas? "Oprah talks and people listen". Just a thought...

    Hi, Margie

I know it's late, but I was a bit curious about your comments about attitudes about animals of those who live in the West. I lived in CA all my life before moving here to CO, and I'm bewildered. Were you speaking of elected officials?

    just wondering...

    ###RE: Horse Slaughter Bill

President Bush cannot sign ANYTHING unless it has been passed by Congress, so I would think that is where we should focus our efforts at this point instead of expending energy on worrying about subsequent events. I do not know President Bush's stance on this but I cannot imagine he would veto it if it were put on his desk.

Whoever said to contact your OWN representative first is very correct. I have contacted Rep. Salazar and am waiting for an answer. He responds only to those in his district.

Alex, thanks a million for all you do.

Barbaro, sweetie, have a good night and God bless.

They'll miss you, but what a joyous day that will be!

ea, wait until it passes both houses before worrying about the President. When it comes time, we can threaten to roast him alive if he doesnt sign it

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri at September 5, 2006 4:05 AM

I just asked my mom, she said he would sign it anyway. No worries about the Prez.

Hi Everyone--I know it's late, but thought I'd post a couple of the facts I found on the HSUS website regarding horses used in production of the drug Premarin as it relates to the slaughter issue. Since estrogen replacement therapy has been proven to be harmful in many studies, I know Wyeth--the maker of Premarin and ironically, the parent company of Fort Dodge Animal Health--has shut down at least 1/3 of their PMU farms, and has plans to shut down another 1/3. The fact that far fewer animals will be bred to produce Premarin will hopefully mean far fewer horses sent to slaughter over the next few years. . .

    5. What happens to unproductive mares?

PMU mares may be used for several consecutive years—provided, of course, that they become pregnant again during the brief summer breeding season. But because there is a serious overpopulation of horses throughout North America, and PMU mares are often untrained and difficult to handle, there is little demand for them once they have outlived their usefulness as estrogen producers. Typically, barren or unproductive mares are sent to the slaughterhouse.

    6. What happens to the foals of PMU mares?

Foals are allowed to nurse and be with their mothers for only three to four months—instead of the normal six-month period. When the time comes for the mares to return to the collection barns, the farmers dispose of surplus foals. A few female foals may be kept for future PMU production, and some farmers even breed registered horses in hopes of selling the foals as riding prospects. Thousands of remaining foals are sent to unsheltered feedlots until they reach a desirable market weight. There they are slaughtered and their carcasses shipped to Europe and Asia for human consumption.

A few thoughts on this sad day:

In rememberance of a remarkable man, Steve Irwin, who touched so many lives in his 44 years. God bless Steve and his beautiful family. It gives me comfort to know that Steve is welcoming God's creatures at the Rainbow Bridge. RIP

President Bush is a wonderful, Christian man, who loves horses! Enough said.

The Jacksons and Shelley are heros in this fight vs. animal slaughter! Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

Barbaro is a hero to us all. His special qualities make him this amazing survivor who has taught us humans the value of life.

Sleep well, sweet boy. See you in the morning! I love you, and all your "people", too.

Love also to Foggy and Special and all the others who need our prayers.

Sweet Warrior Foggy, healing prayers while you sleep. May all that nasty disease leave your body. I love you. You are a strong boy, keep fighting we are all with you always.

    Debbie -CO

Sorry to say Rep Salazar of CO does not support
HR503 - he also drafted one of the poison pill
    amendments-

    Salazar Amendment

    John T. Salazar, D-CO
This amendment to H.R. 503 would require the Secretary to assume responsibility for all unwanted horses.

I believe the Secy is Secy of Agriculture.

I still just don't get how anyone could support this terrible end to horses.
