Barbaro Updates: 66

updates are now here.

Update 603: Just spoke to Kathy Anderson, she visited Barbaro about 4:30 pm this afternoon. She was happy with Bobby, she had not been able to visit for a few days and was pleased with what she observed. He seemed bright and alert in his stall, which she said was quite warm (that being a positive thing since we are having decidedly wet fall weather right now)!

Update 602: Edgar Prado continued his winning ways by winning the riding title at Saratoga, and in doing so beating out probably the second (Gomez) and third (Velasquez) leading riders in the country: Prado edges Gomez to win third Saratoga riding title. Now Edgar, time to pay a quick visit!

Other jockeys in the news include Victor Espinoza: Debutante Win Gives Espinoza Del Mar Record, Joe Bravo: Joe Bravo Wins Six Races at Monmouth and Kieran Fallon: Fallon Withdraws Attempt to Ride in Breeders' Cup.

Update 601: New Bolton's release: Barbaro continues to do well:

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to please veterinarians with his progress after his most recent right hind leg cast change last week. "Barbaro is wearing the new cast satisfactorily," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "We continue to monitor him closely, and depending on how he progresses, we may change it again within the next two weeks."

The colt's left hind foot, which has laminitis, continues to improve gradually, according to Dr. Richardson. The bandage on this foot is changed daily.

"Barbaro's appetite is great, and we take him out each day to hand graze him," said Dr. Richardson. "His vital signs remain normal, and he seems very happy."

Barbaro is in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, September 12 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 600: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg, he worked Showing Up this morning as scheduled, on the inner turf, no dogs (i.e. on the rail). He went in 1:01.1 and was very pleased with the work. This will be his last work before the Man o' War on saturday.

New Bolton Center are releasing a Barbaro update today, that should be available shortly.

Its raining hard here now, training hours were cut short!

Update 599: Another comfortable night for Barbaro (monday night). Michael Matz told me as I was just pulling up on Chappy after galloping 1 3/8 mile in my second set. Michael had heard from Dr. Richardson as usual. It's a little bit rainy this morning but it's actually quite pleasant to ride.
updated tuesday 7:10am

Update 598: Another visit to Lost in the Fog has been posted to the discussion board: A Visit with Lost in the Fog, this was a visit from Saturday. The Bring out your best Barbaro tribute contest closes at 2 pm today. Thanks to all those who have submitted entries thus far.

The Jacksons and the managing partner for the ownership group of Funny Cide will be in Washington today: Time and Location Change for Whitfield Press Conference on H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. The presser notes the conference is 11 pm today, I assume 11 am, but when i called to check yesterday they were on holiday! ShellyA is also in DC for this: INFORMATION FROM DC.

I had been meaning to repost Sabina's link, it includes a couple of additional pictures of Barbaro, and more importantly, a link to this site!

Dan Hendricks is pointing the blame for Brother Derek's fourth last weekend squarely on his own shoulders: Hendricks: Derek wasn't quite fit. I guess I can see what he means. When a horse breezes so easily it means they have obvious talent, but if they are not being pushed then they are not always getting too much out of those breezes. Also, I have now added a link to the site's FAQ to the left.

Good morning Alex, Bobby and team Barbaro,

Thanks for all the great reading material Alex and for the link to Shelley's information from Washington DC. The countdown has begun. Let's hope we all have something to rejoice about when the vote is finally taken. I can't tell you how proud I am of the effort everyone is making to end this industry once and for all. I am also so proud to be a "Barbaromaniac".

Alex - thanks so much for the FAQ link. We can all learn from it.

Yeah Barbaro! ACN, wonderful!

Went to a cookout yesterday and Barbaro was brought up (not by me suprisingly), people were so sympathetic to his situation and many did not know how he was doing!

When I gave them the good news (thank God), they were thrilled! It was so nice to be able to speak on Barbaro's health due to this site.

I hope the rain stops by the time the rally begins and that you find a rain slicker to keep you dry.

So big thanks for the update on "everybody's" colt as well as Foggy & all the others. Also thank you for the phone campaign info. Morning All,

ACN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Question:

With colder weather approaching will Bobby need to be moved from NBC to a warmer climate????? Don't know how cold weather correlates to his hoof regrowing.

Jazz

Posted by: Jazz at September 5, 2006 12:34 PM

Wow.....it is POURING here!! Not exactly what we would have hoped for!!! And I'm sure not prepared.
I sure would have loved my very first rally to be a nice sunny day...but you play the hand your dealt!

I'm sure this will affect the turn out. I guess those of us here will just have to be louder!!

Desperately looking for a rain slicker or something. Have to pack up my computer now to check out.
Please check out my messages on the forum under Information from DC. There is some great information that I got from the professionals about how to make contacts.

Alex, thank you again for all your help in enabling us to communicate

And thanks to all of you for your good wishes. It helps knowing I have a whole team behind me!!

Please read the forum....it is NOT necessary to speak directly to your rep or senator. The staff member handling animal rights for that person has a tremendous amount of influence on their decision. It's very important to know that. Actually, when you call their office, find out who that person is, and direct your correspondence to them....you can always cc the official.

Catch you later...the buses are waiting.

BRAVO to the Jacksons and ShelleyA for taking action on HR503 and to represent the rest of us who are unable to physically be in Washington.

What time on Thursday Sept. 7 do they vote and how soon will we know the results? 9 years hung up in the mire of politics, let's hope there is some action this week!!

Good morning, everyone!

Since I posted this so late last night, thought it might be worth repeating, in light of the rally in Washington today. The Premarin horses suffer a fate WORSE than death for months or even years, and then are generally sent to slaughter once they're no longer needed. It's been my experience that many doctors prescribing Premarin have no idea how it's manufactured.

#####
Hi Everyone--I know it's late, but thought I'd post a couple of the facts I found on the HSUS website regarding horses used in production of the drug Premarin as it relates to the slaughter issue. Since estrogen replacement therapy has been proven to be harmful in many studies, I know Wyeth--the maker of Premarin and ironically, the parent company of Fort Dodge Animal Health--has shut down at least 1/3 of their PMU farms, and has plans to shut down another 1/3. The fact that far fewer animals will be bred to produce Premarin will hopefully mean far fewer horses sent to slaughter over the next few years. . .

5. What happens to unproductive mares?

PMU mares may be used for several consecutive years?provided, of course, that they become pregnant again during the brief summer breeding season. But because there is a serious overpopulation of horses throughout North America, and PMU mares are often untrained and difficult to handle, there is little demand for them once they have outlived their usefulness as estrogen producers. Typically, barren or unproductive mares are sent to the slaughterhouse.

6. What happens to the foals of PMU mares?

Foals are allowed to nurse and be with their mothers for only three to four months?instead of the normal six-month period. When the time comes for the mares to return to the collection barns, the farmers dispose of surplus foals. A few female foals may be kept for future PMU production, and some farmers even breed registered horses in hopes of selling the foals as riding prospects. Thousands of remaining foals are sent to unsheltered feedlots until they reach a desirable market weight. There they are slaughtered and their carcasses shipped to Europe and Asia for human consumption.

At CafePress.com, type in HR 503 in the search and it does bring up some great designs in support of HR503.
I purchased an Exceller t-shirt last year, and every time I wear it (a line on it says "A Champion in all respects, he deserved a kinder fate) you would not believe the people who knew Exceller, but did not know what happened to him, Ferdinand and what was happening here. They were shocked and wanted to help, so I would direct them to ExcellerFund.org, ReRun and OldFriends.
People do care, they just need to know.

Praying for the vote this week to go our way. I have friends involved on my end calling, doing all we can here. Shelley, thinking about you and so happy you can be there. Feel us with you there in spirit OK.

Through all the seemingly tedious everyday routines, he remains very happy and content. What an inspiration this wonderful horse is to us all!

Great news again from NBC - so here's to another safe, progressive week.

Have a good one, everyone.

Hi everyone.....

Just back from 4 days in the mountains and no computer to check updates. B's ACN and that's music to our ears.

Kudos to Shelly and her updates from DC. Hope the vote goes our way.

While I was gone I received an email back from one of the N Cal writers covering Foggy. This is all old news now but at least she responded.

Hi Cathy!
The sonograms are inconlusive. The good news: The tumors aren't getting any bigger. But it's hard to tell if they're shrinking -- yet. We have a conference call with Greg Gilchrist soon. He's keeping a very positive attitude and The Fog is doing his part -- he's feisty as ever. Bloodhorse.com will have something posted later this afternoon.
Thanks!
Debbie

Hello,

I'm inquiring on behalf of a large contingent of Barbaromaniacs at the Tim Whoolley Racing site who are waiting with baited breath on the results of The Fogs sonogram. Do you have any news you can share on this?

It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Just called c-Span to ask about the news conference and the Jacksons , etc. and was told ,by a rather curt woman ,that they are not carrying it . They must be getting lots of calls , which are getting to her ! I'm sure it's not her fault, but still...

Spread Barbaro Effect , spread. Big Barbaro, you are such a centerpiece for so much good.

Well. toronto would Know all about "tedious" having to constantly offer "inspiration" to the world, but, that's just the Linguistic/Philosophical Take on such words. With respect to Barbaro, it's the to-be-hoped-for, okey-dokey, hitch-in-the-gitty-up status quo, which we all long to hear re this beloved horse..Best wishes, †KAWilson

Prado Tops All-Star Cast of Jockeys During Saratoga Meet
by Claire E. Novak
Date Posted: 9/5/2006 11:03:42 AM
Last Updated: 9/5/2006 11:03:42 AM

With 10 mounts on Monday's closing card at Saratoga, jockey Edgar Prado rode three winners to earn the third riding title of his career at the Spa.
Showing typical diversity among trainers and bettors, Prado booted home Delta Sea ($17.80) for James Ferraro, Iron Goddess ($3.00) for Michael Hushion, and Moya ($25.80) for Shug McGaughey.

"It's been up and down this year, but [riding at Saratoga] really helped me to keep on going," said the 39-year-old jockey, who rode the undefeated Barbaro to victory in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and pulled him up when the horse was injured in the Preakness (gr. I).

Along with the peaks and valleys of the spring, Prado is enjoying a highly successful season in New York. Leading the nation with $12,688,398 in purse earnings, he came off a 65-win riding title at Belmont Park to finish the Saratoga meet with 46 wins.

"I think everybody worked really hard during this meet, and I take my hat off to everybody in the jockeys' room, they all did a super job," Prado said. "It's very special to win the title at Saratoga, because we're in the eyes of everybody – trainers, owners, and the public. There are no words to describe it... it's like heaven on earth right here."

West coast rider Garrett Gomez, who found success at Belmont in April while replacing the injured John Velazquez aboard trainer Todd Pletcher's best mounts, developed a strong following among New York horsemen and finished second to Prado with 42 wins.

Although Velazquez returned to riding in July, Gomez retained many of his key connections and turned the race for the title into a closely-waged competition. Riding at Saratoga for the first time in his 18-year career, the 34-year-old jockey brought home four of Pletcher's nine stakes winners, including the grade I Hopeful victory Circular Quay, one of his two wins on closing day.

"I'm more than thrilled with the way the meet went," said Gomez, who will return to Belmont for the fall meet. "It seemed like our momentum built. Our business turned out to be really good and we were lucky enough to get on some really nice horses. I enjoyed myself completely, my family had a great time, there were no expectations on me coming in and the doors that opened were phenomenal."

Thought by many to be the most talented group of riders seen at one meet on the East Coast for quite some time, the 2006 Saratoga colony included journeymen Cornelio Velasquez, Eibar Coa, and Javier Castellano, and young talent like Julien Leparoux, Rafael Bejarano, and Fernando Jara. Prado said this year's riding colony was the toughest he's ridden against in his 23-year career.

"You can pick from one to 10 and they still have a chance to win the race, that's how tough it is," Prado said. "It pushes you a little more every day. You want to win one, two, three. This year has been a real tough (jockey) colony. It was a constellation of the stars here in the jockey's room."

I went to NBC and reread the press release on Barbaro today.

On this second reading , I was especially sruck by the phrase " his vitals are normal , and he
seems happy " .Maybe that's not an exact quote, but close.

I am so happy , getting a deep feeling of warmth and true joy , when I think of his being happy. How in the world he is I don't know, after all the procedures and confinement , etc. , but through some special grace of God he is. Bless him.

Hello Barbaro, heard you are still doing good. Had a chance over the weekend to visit the New Bolton Center. What a great place for our horse to heal. Signed your get well card. Saw the barn you were housed in and peaked in the window to see you. Ran into your owners, the Jacksons, on our way out. What good owners they are! They were bringing you all kinds of horse goodies. I bet they were good. One of the workers told us there is a two humped camel, owned by a shiek, that was there for recovery. I am sure with all the wonderful people that work there, and with some help from God, it will not be long before you are better. Keep up the good work, God loves you, and we do too!

Holding on for Bobby's recovery....
--------------

Hold on to what is good even if it is a handful of earth.

Hold on to what you believe even if it is a tree which stands by itself.

Hold on to what you must do even if it is a long way from here.

Hold on to life even when it is easier letting go.

Hold on to my hand even when I have gone away from you.

I will Hold on to you Sweet Bobby J.

###No, Shelly, not having a bad day, in the least! -and just thinking, as a matter of fact, that I hadn't been *complete* with that bit of the Work, so thanks for your added note. You have [in your earlier post], and no doubt inadvertantly, *perfectly described* "gracelessness", by linking two words; ie. tedious, and inspiration. I was lax to suggest that this is a linkage that is merely of linguistic and philosophical significance and interest. It is also philological and -medical (physical). -"respiration"might be "tedious", but when "inspiration" is "tedious", Shelly, you get: gracelessness. In fact, yes, that is the picture of Canada, likely, always, from my research, but certainly, since 1992.Thank for your note. Best wishes, †KAWilson

Posted by: Kathleen A. Wilson at September 5, 2006 4:43 PM

Kathleen - huh?

Anyways, tedious to the horse perhaps for his daily routine and being couped up in a stall. Most horses I would think wouldn't stay as bright under the circumstances. Just looking at it perhaps from a horse's standpoint.

Canada is a beautiful country.....

That being said - let's remember why we're here and just drop it.

Best wishes to everyone on Team Barbaro.

###We're here for Barbaro, -yes. And Barbaro, as I have stated elsewhere on this list, has many meanings, ONE of which is LARGE, and is likely unknown to you. Many things may or may not be known by you, and if, in 2006, you believe that "Canada is a beautiful country", you are seriously in the Dark on that. But you ARE correct to say that that is not the point of this List. I wrote because I was attempting, in other tasks today, to describe something which I found difficult to describe. I looked at the list -just to take a break- and saw the two words in your note, and it became quite clear. Generally speaking, this list should not be used for these matters. I hardly ever read it, in fact, except for the updates, and to post as I see fit[test -or, most favorably aspected] :) So if you wish to respond to this, feel free to write to me fieldfare@klis.com and as time permits and volition directs, I will respond to you. Best wishes, †KAWilson

Cheryl Jones - regarding animal issues in northern NM. There are a lot of pockets of very rural, and old communities in these parts, very well hidden and off the beaten path. And 'stuff' goes on. Cock fighting, dog fighting, cattle and horse abuse, grazing cattle on BLM land when their is nothing for them to eat or drink, breeding sick, lame, and old horses in hopes of selling the foal and getting money, using unwanted puppies to train fighting dogs (I rescued one), cutting off the ears of pit bull puppies without using anethesia, cutting out tongues of dogs so they can get a bigger bite on people (this tactic mostly used by meth people), and I could go on and on. A lot of this is a result of the drug problems, relatives in the law enforcement agencies that won't go after their 'own'. Add to this people that move here to find a more peaceful life and for the most part will walk around with their heads in the clouds. A lot of people come here in the early Spring to try and become 'hippies' for the summer. When the weather starts getting cold, they leave, and they abandon all of the dogs they accrued over the summer. We brace ourselves for dog dumping season every fall. Most of the puppies under 6 months old are shipped to Denver for adoption. There is a shortage of dogs up there due to the effective spay and neuter programs. There is a very old world attitude here and I really can't cope with it anymore. I am sure you have moved to a more progressive area than I am in. I am not saying anything that people here don't already realize. Even our Governor referred to cock fighting as part of 'our' culture.

Sorry for the length of this post. I could write a book on this subject. It's like nothing you can imagine.

Not only Another Comfortable Night (thanks, Alex, Michael, Peter, Dr. R) - What a wonderful report from NBC - I am KVELLING MIT NACHAS - especially upon seeing the new photos (THANKS FOR THE LINK, Alex, I missed it B4) of Barbaro by Sabina and with Sabina. They portray without a doubt, how good this horse feels. Made me cry again!

Got my Barbaro T-shirt (nose in the roses) just before the weekend (THANKS ERNIE!) and so was able to wear it to the joint where we performed last night. Remember my tale about a patron who did not realize Barbaro was still alive, who was so thrilled when I was able to tell him he was recovering and doing well? He was there last night, admired the T-shirt - which got the conversation immediately to Barbaro - and was so happy to hear the continuing good news.

I sent the HSUS slaughter ban link to virtually everyone in my address book. Please all, remember to send the info out to all your connections, even those you don't identify as "horse people." It's scary how many people don't know a thing about this subject.

Margie...

thanks for the enlightment and don't apologize for the length of the post..For some reason (stupid of me) New Mexico didn't come to mind when you mentioned the West. It is abhorrant and repugnant to have those practices continue and as it appears, even condoned. I wish that there could be more proactive people like you out there. I wish we could do more. I suppose it's rather like the starfish thrower. If you save one, it matters for that one, and for that you should feel proud.

Isn't Barbaro (Horse of Forever) Jackson a superstar?!

Wasn't the e-mail from the northern cal reporter posted by Cathy Potter heartening?
While I was gone I received an email back from one of the N Cal writers covering Foggy. This is all old news now but at least she responded.
Hi Cathy!
The sonograms are inconclusive.
Thanks!
Debbie

I contacted my Rep (Mike Rogers) from SE Michigan and got a noncommittal responses. "I'm not sure how the Congressman will vote on this matter, but he has voted in the past to ban the slaughter of horses." I voiced my "strong request" that Rep. Rogers vote in favor of the bill. I followed up with an e-mail.

I wonder whether this is on the radar for a lot of the reps. Maybe if more people call it'll get their attention.

Great to hear that our beautiful boy is doing so well and is "very happy." Thanks, as always, for the updates.
____________

Shelley A,

Stay warm and dry (if you can). I hope you know how proud we are of you!

I'll be with you all for tomorrow's vigil.
____________

Kathleen Wilson,

Your posts to Shelley in Toronto regarding the "gracelessness" of my country shocked me. It goes without saying that it is more than bad manners to disparage a nation on this board, and that doing so damages the gracious spirit that Alex and the caring people who post here are working for. Until and unless ALL of us remain respectful of the individuals (and the heritages) of the others here, a great disservice is done to this website and to its owners.

Barbaro and Fog, you both are in my thoughts and prayers - may God continue to heal you both inside and out. Keep strong and keep fighting - we are all pulling for you both.

#######
I had posted this late Saturday night (sorry for bringing it up again), just wanted to let you all know who may not have seen it with the holiday weekend and all - and I'm sorry to 'bring down' the mood and all the wonderful news and progress with the horse slaughter bill with a semi-off topic subject, but on Saturday we lost Kansas - I won't make this long but could you please pray for Erin and myself, and especially Erin as this horse and her were so connected.

Erin is keeping busy and trying not to think about but I know it's hurting her and unfortunately I can't be with her right now but will be in a few weeks. Erin also tells me Trinity is beside herself, as her and Kansas were close too (stablemates, etc).

Kansas and her got to spend a lot of time together recently preparing for a commands and barrel racing competition, where they won both. :)

More importantly though, he saved Erin's life twice - once he scared off a bear (yes, it's true) and another time he ran from where they were to the barn where her dad was and whinnied and jumped to get his attention until he followed him in a truck to Erin who had passed out and needed to go to the hospital. He was a truly remarkable and intelligent horse, as so many are, as you all know.

Please keep them in your prayers, and we thank you for your prayers and for reading this, from the bottom of our hearts.

Just got this email. From the Humane Society of the United States in case anyone else wants to call in.

September 5, 2006

Dear Sharon,

National Call-In Day for Horses is tomorrow! A vote on the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503) is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7. Your help is needed to permanently move American horses beyond the reach of slaughterhouse butchers.

Last year, almost 100,000 American horses suffered and died in the United States in foreign-owned slaughterhouses so that their flesh could be flown to Europe and Asia for human consumption. We must send a clear signal to the world that our horses are not here to be slaughtered for food and we do not want them on the chopping block for foreign diners.

Here's what you can do to help:

1. Make the call Sept. 6. Call your U.S. Representative, Scott Garrett, at (202) 225-4465, or call the Congressional switchboard at (202) 224-3121. If you're not sure what to say, try this: "I am a constituent and I am calling to ask that the Representative please protect American horses from slaughter and support H.R. 503, the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I also urge you to oppose any amendments to H.R. 503. I am very concerned about American horses and I don't want them slaughtered."

2. Let us know you called. Follow up your phone calls by letting us know you called to support the end of horse slaughter in the United States.

Please take both steps! We must light up the phones in the Capitol because there already is very vigorous lobbying by the slaughter industry and its allies. We must counter them at every turn.

Please encourage your friends and family to make the call, too. Your calls will not only make a difference, they will help make history. Help us end horse slaughter in the United States forever.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle
President & CEO
The Humane Society of the United States

On the long drive to our gig last night, I was telling my music partner about the great day that Edgar Prado had, leading jockey at Saratoga, and also mentioned how Victor Espinoza had a winning streak that tied Bill Shoemaker's record, and that VE was being compared to Mr. Shoemaker by the announcers, re riding style. My pal started raving about Shoemaker, said he was his all-time favorite jockey, and then said,
"My favorite Kentucky Derby of all time was watching him win on Ferdinand." I said, "Do you know that Ferdinand wound up being slaughtered in Japan?" and he practically crashed the van - he was dumbfounded, said "HOW COULD THAT HAPPEN?" and I told him; how Ferdinand was sent to Japan as a stud and when they were through with him he wound up at a slaughterhouse. My pal just couldn't believe it, and also was kind of taken aback that he never heard about it before. (He fancies himself on top of all the news he needs to know.)

We need to talk about this stuff with the non-dyed-in-the-wool horse-people. And don't forget to mention Ferdinand.

I got a laugh out of it myself.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at September 5, 2006 7:26 PM

Sept. 2, 2006 — Bo Derek made a splash in "10," but now she's making waves in Washington as an ambassador for animal protection. She's also lobbying Congress to stop the commercial slaughter of America's horses.

Bo Derek: This has been a very dirty, quiet, little secret in my opinion, these slaughter houses. … This horse meat isn't going to countries that need the protein, where there might be a famine. It goes to gourmet restaurants that actually, in some instances, advertise "eat an American horse."

The story of Ferdinand, the great race horse, it got the thoroughbred race industry involved. … Ferdinand was an American hero, Kentucky Derby winner in 1986. … He was sent over to Japan … as a stallion. And when he got older and was no longer useful as a stallion for breeding, he was slaughtered for human consumption. … That began this drive to end horse slaughter in our country.

You can liken it to Barbaro. Look at the concern our country has had over this horse who hurt himself racing for us. … In fact, the owners of Barbaro sent out a letter to every congressman and [congress]woman in the House, "Would you eat Barbaro?"

It's handwritten letters that still affect our representatives. Congressman [John] Spratt [D-S.C.] said it's the — what did he call it — the butterfinger letters. He said, "It's the letters you can see a housewife maybe sat down and had butter on her fingers, and there are smudges on a handwritten letter." And he said that those letters will still affect his vote more than anything, more than any lobbyist.

Ryan, all of you are in my prayers...Kansas was a loyal, brave and noble horse. This has to be so hard for Erin as well.

Its been raining in Chester County all day...don't know if Barbaro will be able to graze today...

Take care, everybody.

From the link

One year ago, Barbaro was just a two-year-old colt trying to get a foot in the door of the horse racing scene.

He’d never run a race. No one quite knew his potential. On May 4, 2005, his trainer Michael Matz led him to Fair Hill Training Center’s practice-starting gate for the first time.

In a real race, horses are loaded one-by-one into a starting gate. When the buzzer sounds, the gate doors open and the horses charge out.

At least that’s what happens on a good day at the racetrack. On a bad day, an anomaly inside the gate could cause a horse to have a bad start. That could squash his chances of winning.

Practice with the starting gate doesn’t always guarantee a perfect race, but it helps. Barbaro can attest to that.

The steel-green practice gate at Fair Hill Training Center sits on a one-mile track and has four doors in which to load horses. Matz and others who train at Fair Hill use it to get their horses prepared for the gates they will spring from on race days. Horses like to be around other horses, so trainers put them through gate training more than one at a time.

Last May, with the help of Fair Hill gate operator Bryan Craft, Matz led Barbaro through the open gate and back again a few times to get him familiar.

Barbaro stayed calm and dignified, so they moved him on to the next step in gate training: breaking.

Breaking is when the race begins and the horses rush out of the gate onto the track. To get Fair Hill horses prepared for this, an exercise rider will get on the horse, Craft will sound a bell, the battery-operated gate doors will open and the rider will steer the horse out of the gate and onto the track. They start slow, and eventually over a few days work the horse out of the gate at a full gallop.

Matz brings his horses to the practice gate about three times a week, Craft said. Even experienced horses get a few runs through the gate this often.

“This way it’s just part of the horses’ normal routine,” Craft said Wednesday. “A lot of trainers, once they get the horses OK with the gate, they never see the (practice) gate again unless it becomes a problem. But all of Michael’s horses are pretty good about being around the gate because he brings them here so much.”

Barbaro’s first time with the practice gate still stands out in Craft’s mind.

“Barbaro was just a perfect student, as far as the starting gate goes,” Craft said. “We didn’t know how good he was until he started breaking. That’s when Michael and everyone started saying, ‘This horse might be all right.’”

Barbaro never made a bad step inside the Fair Hill practice gates during trainings, Craft said. But at his very first race, in November at Delaware Park, the horse didn’t want to get in the gate.

“It was his first time ever to the races, and everything was a little different,” Craft said. “He was just a little bit of a pain in the (rear) at first.”

They got him in the gate eventually n and he managed to win the race. It set the tempo for his entire career so far: Of the six times he’s raced, Barbaro hasn’t lost one yet. Craft said he’s never had another problem getting Barbaro into the starting gate at a race.

“We just brought him back here and schooled him three or four times and he’s been great ever since,” he said.

Other big-name horses have run into major trauma at gate time. While prepping for his first career start, during a schooling session at the gate at Philadelphia Park, Smarty Jones rammed his head into an iron bar, fracturing his skull. He underwent months of treatment and finally made it back to racing, winning the Kentucky Derby two years ago.

This year’s Derby race started a bit scarily for Barbaro too, Craft said.

“Some people said he stumbled when he came out of the gate,” he said. “He took a bad step and bobbed a bit when he came out.”

Craft said he watched replays of Barbaro’s Derby start dozens of times and realized where the horse may have initially slipped up.

“I saw that before the doors opened, he lifted up his right leg two inches off the ground,” Craft said. “Then when the bell went off he had his leg lifted up and it just tripped him up a bit.”

Matz asked Craft this week what they can do to prevent a similarly stumbled start in the Preakness next weekend.

“He said, ‘How do you stop him from doing that?’ I said there’s nothing you can really do, you just train him well enough so he can get out of the gate and run a quick race,” Craft said.

Craft said Matz will probably bring Barbaro over to the starting gate a few times between now and when the team leaves for Baltimore’s Pimlico Racetrack a week from now.

About Barbaro’s early Derby stumble, Craft added: “He recovered from it pretty quick.”

And besides, even after the trip-up, the big guy won the race.

TLC,
It is exactly what it sounds like, learning. A horse can't just go into the gate on his first try, he has to be shown the gate, until he is comfortable with it, walked through it, has to learn how to stand in it with the doors open...has to learn how to accept the confinement.
If it fails, as in the case of Miraculous Miss's accident, back to school to get a new gate card !!
Sorry I didn't answer before, wasn't here.

According to CNN 12% of Americans are happy with Congress for the way they handled the horse slaughter bill. 84% say they wish Congress had done more.

I haven't heard if this bill has finally gotten defeated. But I think this is good.

I don't know how many of these Senators are up for re-election but maybe a next step would be to talk to those folk running for office and finding out where they stand on this issue.

If this bill failed to pass (I HAVEN'T HEARD ONE WAY OR THE OTHER SO PLEASE TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION BEFORE BASHING ME)I wonder if it can be repealed at some point and how we'd go about it?

Well Barbaro my friend I have taken more than my fair share of time here today. Have a good evening and a sound snooze tonight. I continue to watch from afar and am so happy that things seem to be going well for you. Hang in there. We love you Barbaro.

Shelley in Toronto & Joyce Moore,

Do not attempt to adjust your television ......
You briefly entered the Twilight Zone, but thankfully no one got hurt! [Except, inexplicably, Canada - of all things to besmerch in this world full of things that actually ARE awful!] I visited the Twilight Zone last week and came back with no answers to the "Weekly Jumble", but it was interesting in a wierd way, I guess.

Yeah, Barbaro,
For your name and the word "happy" to be in the same sentence . . . Oh, JOY JOY JOY. That has to be the best sentence I have read in MONTHS.

Along with so many others, I add my thanks to Shelley A. for her dedication and hard work. I printed information I found on the web about Excellor after the T-shirt was mentioned. I'll have to read the print-out at home because if I read it here I will not be able to work.

Congratulations to our Hero, Edgar Prado! Well done, sir.

Does anyone know if Barbaro's groom has been able to visit him at NBC? Of all the special people in his life, perhaps Barbaro knows him best. I'll need the opinions of the "horse-people" to know if that assumption on my part is correct.

Thank you for giving us the news, Alex!

I have a question (maybe a dumb one) - if your Congressman is co-sponsoring the bill, would you still call tomorrow? Thanks...

Posted by: Patti in Sherman Oaks, CA at September 5, 2006 8:39 PM

Just spoke to Rep Tod Akin for MO about the HS bill. He said he doesnt know enough about it yet to give a definitive answer on how he will vote (Or IF) I would think he ought to get off his butt and find out. When is the vote coming up? Jen

Renee,
Barbaro is actually trying to BITE his pony! I love that photo cause it shows Barbaro "all full of himself", just finished winning the Kentucky Derby, and then as if to "show off" bites the pony. LOL

Patti in Sherman Oaks -

YES! Call him/her anyway. Constant whining works. (That's how I got rid of my ex).

Posted by: Margie at September 5, 2006 8:46 PM

If your rep is a co-sponsor, it means he/she already supports the bill -- but it still couldn't hurt to call or write and encourage their continued support. I know some reps have bailed in the past so we need to keep as many on board as possible. And by all means do call anyone who is either opposed or on the fence. The election is coming up and if enough constituents express an interest, who knows what could happen?

To All, Concerning negative promotion of HR 503

I just returned home from running a few errands. I had talk radio on and heard Shawn Hannity "poo-pooing" the importance of the US Congress debating and concerning themselves with the Horse Protection Bill. Now, either this widely listened to radio host is just ignorant as to what HR 503 is all about, or he is a heartless strictly-polital hack, who has been courted by some pro-slaughter groups...I really can't say for sure.

I am inclined to think, the FORMER...that he just has no idea that the bill is about the prevention of cruel & inhumane horse slaughter in our civilized and compassionate America.

I tried to call the show but cannot get through. I am going to try to E-mail him via FOX NEWS and try to better inform him.

He just kept harping on what he called, "a horse protection bill," saying that the Congress needs to focus on "important" issues instead, especially in light of the November election coming soon.

Please, help me, if you can, and take a moment to try to get through to him. He has literally millions of listeners. I don't think he realizes what or how important the issue really is, or that he might be greatly contributing a negative slant to a just and immediate cause.

Thanks.

The Horse Slaughter Legislation is getting some buzz from Wolf Blitzer today...

I believe he sighted a poll that showed only 12percent of Americans are for the slaughter of horses...

Republican spokeswoman Torie Clark said on the Situation Room show that, while she loves horses..."they come back ....and the legislation they are dealing with is about horse slaughter...this is not what they should be focused on..."

This was in response to a question about accountability from our politicians...

As we all know, these matters have been scheduled for MONTHS ...IMHO...I don't think the legislators have been putting aside their accountability for this reason...

PAMMIE,

Great work on the dog food issue. SHAWN HANNITY needs to realize that we don't even feed horses to our dogs (and have not done so since the last big outcry in the 1970's).

If Hannity and others of his ilk were to dine out in France, etc., would they purposely and willing order a horse steak? I seriously doubt it.

JEN in WARREN COUNTY--thanks for the update on Akin. I live in Carnahan's district (and I'm Still With Mel) but I plan to fax/email all the MO reps tonight.

AKIN is up for re-election.

I called Carnahan's DC office today and was told the Animal Welfare aide had "just stepped out". I left a VM and asked for a CB but haven't heard anything; I'm not taking that as a negative.

BTW, I love Canada.

OK, RE REPS TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT BY NOT SHOWING UP FOR VOTING;

Remind them nicely that this is an election year! Dodging hot button issues by not showing up for the vote is a very bad idea. We have ways to track them and let everyone know who's showing up for work and who isn't.

One person's "unimportant" issue is another's electoral litmus test.

I just received this e-mail Alert from the ASPCA
National Call-In Day for Horses-Help Us End Horse Slaughter!
With a vote on the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503) expected this week, your support is urgently needed! Wednesday, September 6, is the national call-in day for constituents to urge House members to permanently protect horses from slaughter in the United States.

Last year, almost 100,000 horses suffered and died in the United States in foreign-owned slaughterhouses, so that their flesh could be flown to Europe and Asia for human consumption. We must send a clear signal to the world that American horses are not here to be slaughtered to serve the foreign market for horsemeat.

Make the call on September 6! Please call your U.S. Representative tomorrow, September 6, and urge him or her to vote YES on the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act! Tell your Representative: "I am a constituent, and I am calling to ask that Representative __________ please protect American horses from slaughter and support H.R. 503, the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I also urge you to oppose any amendments to H.R. 503. I am very concerned about American horses, and I don't want them to be slaughtered." To find contact information for your representative, click here, or call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

The time is now! A vote on this bill is imminent. As always, thank you for your continued support to help us protect Americas horses!
----
I have contacted my representative and recieved a generic answer and will try again tomorrow...and the next day. Thank you to everyone in the Barbaro Nation working on this issue.

Some Christian (mostly Catholic) thoughts pertaining to HR503.

"If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men." Francis of Assisi.

"Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission?to be of service to them wherever they require it." Francis of Assisi.

"Animals are God's creatures, not human property, nor utilities, nor resources, nor commodities, but precious beings in God's sight -- Christians whose eyes are fixed on the awfulness of crucifixion are in a special position to understand the awfulness of innocent suffering. The Cross of Christ is God's absolute identification with the weak, the powerless, and the vulnerable, but most of all with unprotected, undefended, innocent suffering." Reverend Andrew Linzey.

"Animals have done us no harm and they have no power of resistance. There is something so very dreadful in tormenting those who have never harmed us, who cannot defend themselves, who are utterly in our power." Cardinal John Henry Newman.

"They too, are created by the same loving hand of God which Created us...It is our duty to Protect Them and to promote their well-being." Mother Teresa.

"Animals possess a soul and men must love and feel solidarity with our smaller brethren -- the fruit of the creative action of the Holy Spirit and merit respect -- as near to God as men are. He reminded people that all living beings came into being because of the "breath" of God. He spoke of St. Francis's love for animals declaring, 'We, too, are called to a similar attitude.'" His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

"We may pretend to what religion we please, but cruelty is atheism. We may make our boast of Christianity; but cruelty is infidelity. We may trust our orthodoxy, but cruelty is the worst of heresies." Humphry Primatt. Dissertation on the Duty of Mercy and the Sin of Cruelty to Brute Animals.

Pamela, props to you for contacting Hills and getting the answer to the question on their pet food.

Politics is not a pretty place... but the word is getting out on HR 503! Remembering history, not every rights issue [slavery, voting rights, etc]had 100% support from the populace or the Congress. If Congress had dealt with this issue properly years ago they wouldn't have to deal with it now.. like not fixing your roof and being surprised it's leaking! If they don't deal with it this year we'll be back in double the numbers next year.

Virtual hugs to all putting forth the energy to bring this issue to a humane and compassionate resolution. I can hear a collective whinny, and we are not even into Tuesday call in day. As to no-shows at the vote... perhaps it will be pro-slaughter ones who wouldn't want their record to show a no vote, in an election year, afraid of the constituent backlash in November. - Peace to all, safety and compassion to the horses, Susan in Saratoga

Couldn't agree more, Friar Tuck ... flies and honey ... a definite "Daily Double Winner" ... across the board!!

I'm all geared up for tomorrow's calls and I sent an email with a direct link to Wayne Pacelle's instructions at USHS for everyone! I just love the way politicians are saying that they are going to concentrate on "the important issues". (Read: I'm not going to do a thing until after the elections.) Where have they BEEN all these months that they have done nothing on ANY issue. If they don't have compassion for animals, how can they have compassion for people?

I have emailed my representative in CO but have not heard back (surprise). I will email again and also call. With the elections coming up, I am going to vote against anyone who did not support HR 503.

A "Heads Up" for all interested parties ...

I do not intend to disparage or speak negatively about anyone on this board intentionally; however, suffice it to say that I have had some personal email exchanges with an individual whose posts today are causing some 'concern' for other people and other countries.

Without mentioning any names, let me just say that the emails I received from this individual were aggressive, attacking and nasty, to say the least. I emailed this individual back and instructed that I never be contacted or emailed again.

I suggest that those of you here who are finding some dissatisfaction with the posts of this individual do the very same thing and completely ignore these posts which are, at times, completely unintelligible anyway, as were the emails that were directed to me without my consent or request ... complete gibberish and I couldn't make heads or tails out of any of it.

Enough said, I'm sure!!

Just sent this email to Hannity.

This legislation is not a joke. Yes there are numerous important issues that face all Americans today. Polls show only a fraction of Americans are in favor of horse-slaughter. Would you be in favor of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner who suffered a catastrophic injury ending up on the table of a French diner? Did you know that past Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand & Champion Exceller did? This is a barbaric practice that should be stopped.

Americans do NOT want their beloved horses ending their lives in this despicable way.

Linnie,
It stinks that this person was so awful to you. She should probably be blocked from this site and the discussion boards, too, for the things that she has said (the intelligible parts, anyway). The only reason I find her interesting is because it's like a game now to try to figure out if she's genuinely stupid, just ignorant, completely nuts, or all three! I was "invited" to email her, but did not, specifically so that she would not have my email address.

If it becomes a continuing problem, perhaps we should ask Alex to step in.

I'll try not to yank her chain .... but sometimes she just attacks with no provocation at all.

During research and composition for emailing to my congressman, I wanted share information (and make sure I have it right) that originates from one of America's fondest lovers and friends of horses (and animal lover), Former President Ronald Reagan. Anyway, I ran across this article some may find interesting (esp. starting witht the 8th paragraph):

http://www.rachelmarsden.com/columns/reagan.html

Additionally,

"I've often said there's nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse."--Ronald Reagan

Finally, I seem to remember (but can't confirm) that the horse leading Former President Ronald Reagan's funeral procession was indeed a horse rescued from slaughter; and if true, oh, how proud President Reagan would have been.

Cheryl PA I like your 9:35 post, I feel that way exactly about animals!

Margie, You enlightened me yesterday some about NM. I just read your post today about some horrible things done to animals there. Sounds like your living in hell out there. LA has embarrassed me by allowing cock fighting. Supporters say it's family entertainment...thats scary! Also, they have hog/dog fights here that animal activist are trying to stop. I hope they are successful. I can't imagine enjoying watching animals kill each other and suffer. Very sick indeed!

Barbaro, I'm so proud of you for being such a good boy and following all your Dr.'s orders. Keep it up Big Boy.

LITF, I hope you had a comfortable day and will have a comfortable night. You are in my prayers daily!! You are such a fighter!! Going light candles for you and Barbaro!

#### Hannity fancies himself as a "bad boy". He certainly wouldn't want to be confused with a "bleeding-heart liberal". He doesn't care about anything except being cool.

I love Reagan saying "nothing's better for the inside of a man as the outside of a horse".

The saying to describe Hannity is "All hat and no cattle".

I don't know why we always have to have serpents in the garden. This is supposed to be a place to care about Bobby, and by extension, others, like LITF, pets, friends, horses in general (slaughter legislation), etc.

Maybe I shouldn't have said serpent, though, because I like snakes. Snakes do good things, like keep down the rodent population.

Just to let you know - you can email Shawn Hannity. His email address is Hannity@foxnews.com. I sent an email a few hours ago when I read here that he had a very callous attitude about the issue. He has children. I tried to make him understand that it would be like taking a beloved dog of theirs and having it stolen and finding out later that it was taken to a slaughterhouse and became food to send to another country. It was worth a shot anyway.

Thank you for contacting me to express your support that I share to protect America 's horses.

You may be pleased to know that in the 109 th Congress (2005-2006), I am diligently working to protect animals by sponsoring crucial animal protection legislation and supporting legislative measures on the Senate floor. The Humane Society of the United States rated my record at 100 percent on their scorecard for the 1st Session of the 109 th Congress.

I supported the Ensign-Byrd Amendment to Fiscal Year 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill that prohibits the use of appropriated funds to pay the salaries or expenses of personnel to inspect horses for slaughter. You will be pleased to know that the House and Senate Conference Committee met to resolve the differences between the two chambers' versions and kept the language previously mentioned in the final conference report. The President signed the FY06 Agriculture Appropriations legislation into law on November 10, 2005. Also, I am a co-sponsor of Senator John Ensign's legislation, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2005. You can be sure that I will continue to address these important issues.

Again, thank you for contacting me about horses in our great nation. Please continue to keep me informed of your views on this or other matters of concern. If you need any additional assistance, please feel free to contact me or visit my website, at http://specter.senate.gov.

Sincerely,

Hello Barbaromaniacs:>) It's been so hard to keep up with everyone due to the fact that I was reassigned to another Division at the courthouse where I work. Extremely busy.......we had a little over 800 cases heard today throughout the courthouse.....

Anyway, I think this has been posted before but I just want to repeat it........

If you go to the www.kentuckyderby.com website and click on "The Derby Entrants", you'll see a screen to click on whatever horse you want to view. Of course, that has to be Barbaro....When the video screen comes up, you'll need to click on "videos" and it should take you to the video that has Barbaro arriving for the Derby.

I am so mersmerized with this video (it doesn't have any sound) because it just shows our Precious Barbaro in all his glory. In this video, you'll see Barbaro looking straight at the camera about 3 times at least. He just looks so "majestic" in all his beauty. It's just an awesome video........you'll have to view it for yourself. It's like Barbaro's is say, "Yes, I am beautiful...tell all your friends"......So I'm telling my Barbaro Team.

Laurie H,

I'm assuming that the beef people feel threatened. Horses and cattle are both considered livestock. Maybe they feel that if HR 503 passes, we'll go after them next. Believe me, I'm certainly not defending them. I quit eating beef years ago.

Posted by: joyce moore at September 6, 2006 12:33 AM

Jake, I guess 'real people' are few, then.

Posted by: Anna in Tx at September 6, 2006 12:34 AM

Laurie H., because they fear they'd be next, and many cattlemen have horses, too.

Posted by: Anna in Tx at September 6, 2006 12:37 AM

Thank you again!

Posted by: Laurie H. in MN at September 6, 2006 12:37 AM

Posted by: Anna in Tx at September 6, 2006 12:40 AM

Anna in TX,
Thank you for the explaination! It makes sense. But I would almost think that they would welcome another "division" being shut down. More demand for their product.
Thank you for the explaination and the response Anna!

OK I feel I have to stand up and defend my home state of New Mexico. I have watched it be bashed for two days now and feel like I have to step in and let everyone know that where ever Margie lives must have law enforcement or animal control problems. I have lived in Eastern New Mexico and Southern New Mexico a good part of my life and while yes ranching is big business the cattle and horses are very valuable and many sleepless nights are spent protecting them from all types of dangers. Cock Fighting is legal but there is a large and vocal movement that wants it outlawed. My family rescued many fighting roosters ourselves. Cock fighting is not something I am proud of, but its not happening on every street corner either. This whole deal reminds me of the people who move to The Keys and then complain about how it is not like where come from. There are so many monied people who have moved into the Northern NM area increasing the land value but bring no jobs, but expecting the native/locals to live up to their expectations. I am sure the law enforcement etc are doing the best they can, and if they are not, then those that are complaining should run for office or do something to change it. I guess what I am trying to say, is that New Mexico does not consist of Albuquerque and Santa Fe and the surrounding area. Its the 5th biggest state in the country. Dont lump everyone into the pile that one person is saying is a problem in their area. Believe me, there are no hippy wannabe's where I grew up. Them cowboys would run 'em outta dodge, especially for mistreating their dogs. You see a cowboys dog is his partner, he needs him to work the cattle...and guard the truck.

Posted by: Laura in Key West at September 6, 2006 12:41 AM

Laurie H., there is little or no division, as the horse and beef meet aren't competing.
It's apples and oranges, basically- horse meat gets shipped out, for the most part. A lot of the beef stays here in the U.S.

Laura in Key West, I missed a lot. Slamming New Mexico? One of the most beautiful places imaginable, and still relatively unspoiled? She's my sister state. I feel like she's actually my own state, sometimes. We were all one territory in the olden days.

I watched every single Derby video of past performances for every single horse,on the Derby website. Many times in fact.
At the end of it all,I just knew,it was going to be Barbaro....
What a thrill it was, what a great horse.
I won a lot of money on him,but that was secondary. The horse was just plain beautiful.
I did not even bet on the Preakness,I just wanted to see him win for fun.
He would have too!

Hi Gang!!!

So glad to be back today!! There was so much to catch up with that I never got a chance to post until late tonight. It was so nice to be back at NBC today. (Good grief, what will I do when Barbaro goes home?) We welcomed everyone back from their long weekend with pizza and salad for lunch. Everyone expressed their gratitude for your kindness. We brought up a big basket of carrots and pears for the big guy! I can imagine he was wondering where his usual daily delivery of green tops was... "OK, I get that they don't deliver on Sundays, but what's with this long weekend thing?" All kidding aside, when I asked about Barbaro, Iwas told that he had a really good weekend.

Alie went back up later with a special delivery for a special friend, some apples, carrots and treats for the blood donor horses, and some other treats for the two legged beasts. I got to make a trip to Fair Hill, with goodies for Michael Matz, Peter, Alex, Tim and Dr Anderson.

Again, thank you all for everything you do... the candles, prayers, tributes, poems, jokes, etc. It truly is nice to be HOME!

WE BELIEVE!!

I believe you can E-mail him at:

hannity@foxnews.com

or go to Fox News and follow links to contact him. You might also fire a letter or two to some of the other Fox personalities while you are there. Being "squeeky wheels" is effective but, as my Dad always says, "...it's the far*in' horse that gets the cart!" Let's make a mighty wind!

Shawn was being really ignorant and coldhearted on his show today, concerning HR503. He never called it by its true title, he just ranted that Congress has more important issues to consider right now, than "the horse protection bill" (as he kept calling it.) He hammered this repeatedly during most of his 3 hr show today.

I am hoping that as many of us as possible will write him to let him know exactly what this bill is and why it is important and compassionate to pass it ASAP.

I am a Compassionate Conservative. I really thought that he was too...that is until today. He LOVES Ronald Reagan, (as do I). We need to remind him of Reagan's love for horses, and ask him...W.W.R.D? What Would Reagan Do?

Looked at the video of Bobby at the KY Derby. He is gorgeous from all angles -- and that tail of his.

Also, looked at the others -- all good looking but of course none can compare -- but Jazil seemed to have the most pitiful little tail. Is that just not his best feature or did something happen to it?

OTHERLYN, I JUST SENT MY EMAIL TO SEAN HANNITY- I'LL CUT & PASTE THE MAIN PART. I PUT IN SOME OF CHERYL'S(PA) RELIGIOUS QUOTES SINCE SEAN IS EXTREMELY CONSERVATIVE AND ALSO A PHOTO OF BARBARO, TO HUMANIZE HORSES MORE!! THE PHOTO ISN'T BELOW OBVIOUSLY!! THANKS FOR GIVING ME THE HEADS UP!!! I DON'T HAVE AS MUCH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE SLAUGHTER HOUSES AS SOME OF YOU ALL DO, SO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL HIM AND OTHER MEDIA.
THANKS-
CHERYL G

Hi Sean, I am a fan of your shows and my Mother absolutely LOVES you, I am not involved in Partisan Politics what so ever. I did vote for Bush in the last election, but I have a mind of my own and I definitely use it to make the best decisions for our country and our beloved Animals.

Every year, more than 65,000 horses are killed in the U.S. so their flesh can be sold for food in Europe and Asia. Horses previously used for racing, in rodeos, at riding schools, and for Premarin production are the everyday victims of the horse-flesh trade.

When horses are too old to be economically useful to these industries, they are packed onto trucks and shipped without food or water. The trip to the slaughterhouse is often very long and stressful. Most transport trucks are too small for the horses to fully stand up, causing significant discomfort to the animals. Horses frequently arrive at the slaughterhouse dehydrated, severely injured, or dead. Many horses are then improperly stunned, leaving them completely conscious as they are hung upside-down by a rear leg. Their throats are then slit and their bodies dismembered, Not a pretty sight.

I am asking you to please help support the Anti-Slaughter Bill, HR 503. We need the voice of well respected media like yourself.

I definitely love sports, I'll pass along a photo of my favorite Race Horse Barbaro, who was injured in May racing for the Triple Crown after winning the Kentucky Derby. Barbaro is one of the LUCKY ONES, his family (Yes, I'm referring to his humans as family) has the financial resources to care for him regardless of what may happen.

Thank You-- Please take some time deciding how you feel about HR 503, as this issue is extremely important to multitudes of people. Below Barbaro's photo, I've included some quotes, including one from Pope John Paul II.

Sincerely,
Cheryl Gorder

But now, after another day of inspiring your "Effect" on us, it's time to grab your blanket and trot off to bed. Get plenty of sleep tonight Barbaro. Let the healing continue. And remember Honey, only sweet dreams for you.
I'll be here first thing in the morning to check on any updates. Sleep well Little One. Good night. I love you. XXOO

I didnt hear Sean Hannity today, I am surprised by this. I think he needs to realize that after months of bipartisinism this is something that we have come together for. Yes, there are many pressing issues facing our Country, but the world keeps turning too. An issue that has "turned" up in the mean time is HS503. Maybe he needs to get on the back of a horse, say hey city boy. See how our Country was built!

############
J Carson,
I really dont know where the post are, this morning and this afternoon, last night.. I guess, but I have run across them the couple of times I checked in. I just know that my butt and most of my familys have been up at 3 am pulling a calf, or making sure the coyotes are are staying away from the barn. Hauling water not only for the cattle, but the deer, and other wildlife that need it. You know the drill. I also know that some of the most spiritual moments of my life were sitting beside a stream at Pecos, watching the trout. Its a great state, the Native Americans revere the animals. It may be simple but its not a 3rd world country.

Why is the beef industry protecting horse slaughter? Because some ranchers also raise horses specifically for slaughter. Because most European nations still ban the import of US beef because of a couple of mad cow scares a couple of years back.

I do not mean to offend anyone's political affilitiations, but it is a waste of time to try to communicate to Sean Hannity about his views on anything. He is self-righteous and narrow-minded and is hypocritical--against abortion, for the Iraq war, criticizing those who are on the left of his belief systems, accusing people of being un-American if they question the President's policies. Someone like him would not be open to understanding why this H.R.503 has real significance.

People called New Mexico a third world country? Good Heavens. I'll tell you what I love about New Mexico. The wilds. The lack of strip malls, and malls, and cookie-cutter houses. The fact that people work the land. The fact they still have beauty there, and it isn't fenced in. (Yet.)

It's real. It isn't fake. It's where you'd want to raise kids, where they could enjoy simpler things -- and I know there are a lot of places like this, and they're all considered backward - that kind of beauty you can't get in a city.

One of my favorite people is Don Imus. Talk about a good way to get children with cancer to believe in themselves - what he does is incredible. I look at his ranch on TV most mornings, and my heart just fills up with light. The junipers, the mesa, the fresh clean sunlight, which isn't touched by smog.

I love New Mexico!

Otherlyn thanks for the email address. I just got done sending my rant to Hannity. It's below.

Normally I can tolerate opinions that are different than mine without thinking about them for many hours later, becoming more frustrated with each passing moment. I’m hoping that sending an email will alleviate my growing concern over the insensitivity you exhibited on today’s program.

I am referring specifically to your so-called “horse protection” bill that you imply has no place in our government because of the “more pressing” matters of the day. I beg to differ. Our current global state of affairs did not get here by accident. In today’s world of civil unrest, bloody wars, terrorism of all kinds, and the widening gap between the upper and lower classes we need to think how things got to the point of chaos we find ourselves in to find an ultimate solution.

I daresay that our current state of chaos is caused in large part by our increasing disregard and disrespect for humanity, goodness, decency, and righteousness. In the name of “bigger issues” we bypass the stories of those we deem insignificant and unimportant. We trample on the lives of the innocent. We do not give voice to the cause of the helpless. Our government is “too important” to deal with the everyday. It is this dangerous thinking that has caused us to slide down the slippery slope of the mass destruction we find ourselves in today.

The “horse protection” bill you speak of is more correctly referred to as HR503, the “anti-slaughter” bill that makes it illegal to kill helpless animals who do not deserve the fates our government currently allows. It is just this type of legislation that can begin to restore the sense of decency so desperately needed in our society. By supporting issues such as this, our government can help us remember the principles and values that bind us together, regardless of our political persuasions.

I’m certainly not suggesting that this legislation leads us down the right path towards solving the bigger problems our country currently faces. But to argue that because it doesn’t solve these pressing issues means it has no place being considered implies that any legislation deemed “not worthy” of our government is also meaningless. Isn’t this how we find ourselves in the bind we’re currently in?

Save the horses. Maybe in restoring our decency to these beautiful innocent animals we can begin to infuse the humanity so sorely needed to begin the difficult work that lies ahead.

DEAR ANNA & LAURIE -

As far as where the Beef Assoc. stands , I got curious why they would be against the bill and came upon the National Cattlemen's Beef Assoc. website.. I didn't find anything about H.R. 503, but what I did find was somewhat reassuring. It's lengthy, and I apologize for that. I tried to condense it a bit (not much luck there), but maybe you can skim it:

"The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Public Lands Council (PLC) announced February 21, 2006, a national campaign aimed at promoting the purchase of wild horses and burros.

"Letters from PLC President and California rancher Mike Byrne, and BLM Director Kathleen Clarke went out to more than 15,000 grazing permitees across the West urging public lands ranchers to consider buying the animals.

"In February 2006, PLC President and California cattleman Mike Byrne, and BLM Director Kathleen Clarke sent letters to more than 15,000 livestock operators across the West who hold BLM-issued grazing permits or leases. The letters (text of which is pasted below) urge public lands ranchers to consider buying the animals.

Dear Permittee:

Wild horses are a part of the history of the West that is still with us today. Like the American public, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Public Lands Council (PLC) value this important part of our heritage. We all understand the importance of managing the horses in balance with other rangeland resources and uses required by law.

The law requires horses to be managed on the range at the appropriate management level (AML). The cost for caring for horses that have been removed from the range to reach AML is enormous and strains the BLM's ability to deliver other services. The BLM has worked hard through adoptions and other efforts to maintain appropriate levels but needs your assistance.

For this reason, the PLC and BLM are joining together in an effort to encourage the purchase of older horses.

The BLM currently has approximately 7,000 horses available for sale. The horses are primarily mares and geldings 11 years and older. The BLM is offering these animals for sale so they can continue to live out their lives under private care and ownership. Since March of 2005, the BLM has sold approximately 1,500 horses.

We recognize and appreciate that many of you already provide support to wild horses and burros through water use and grazing on private lands intermingled with the public lands. We are asking you to consider continuing to help by purchasing some of the older horses. The BLM will deliver loads of at least 20 to a central location for pickup or individual animals may be picked up at the nearest BLM wild horse and burro facility.

"Interest and advocacy groups’ response to the purchasing of older animals has been very limited. Now more than ever, we need stewards from the ranching community and other supporters who care about public lands to step up and purchase these horses. We would like to thank those who have already purchased some of these animals.."

"Ranchers understand the importance of managing these horses in balance with other rangeland resources... But over population and horse welfare have become a concern. Now more than ever, we need stewards from the ranching community and other citizens in rural communities to step up and purchase these horses."

Again, I'm sorry for the length of this, but unless I'm missing something, they seem to be pro-horse people.

Thank you, Shelley A. for your good work.

Goodnight Sweet Barbaro - You are the Impetus.

Sheila, so well stated. It reminded me that when I have heard it's "just a horse," I wonder why people don't make the connection. Your words underscore again how compassion and respect for horses may very well translate or lead into other decent thoughts and actions. And no matter how many other big or important challenges there are, "smaller" things can be significant in their own right and must still be addressed. Thanks for sharing what you wrote.

Shelly A, thanks for the info from D.C. and the latest list of which reps in our areas are still not on board. Hope the phones will light up tomorrow.

Hi Glenda, and thanks .... but this person is not an issue for me anymore, but if continual harrassment is suffered by too many people here, then, yes, I do believe that other measures should be taken at that time.

Linnie,
It stinks that this person was so awful to you.

Gosh you guys..I am sort of overwhelmed today. So many things....so many things. The HR503, the excitement for Barbaro and his continuing progress, the loss of Steve Irwin, Mike Rea's recovery and getting him noticed for Extreme Home makeover, the beautiful videos from everyone, the Jacksons in Washington, and many many other things.

I find myself just starring at boards today and not knowing what to say to you all. I am in AWE of everyone here. I cant beleive that I am part of this. Someone said this yesterday and I was thinking the same thing. We are participating in an historic event.

This past weekend I had the priveledge to meet one of our cherished members of Barbaro Nation in person. The commradere of this board, dedicated to this marvelous hero Barbaro, has changed us both in ways we never expected. Niether of us have much experience with horses. WE knew nothing about most of the issues being discussed. We talked at length about why we are here and how Barbaro has influenced our outlook on these things. We talked about how we now have some new friends and we feel we can get outside of our own little world and participate in something bigger. We know that we must continue to seek out the greater good in Barbaro's situation and each of us work with our own little piece of them.

Thank you to all the people who have chosen the HR503 work as thier personal contribution. For me, I am going to try to hook up with the Campainging for Barbaro folks and lobby for safer track surfaces and raise a few dollars for these issues. We all do what we can.

I want to tell you about a gift that I received this weekend from my new Barbaro Nation friend.
I was presented with the most wonderful handmade beaded bracelets...two of them, in the Lael signature colors of green and blue. Each of them has a small silver charm that says "Believe" and one also has a silver Kentucky Derby ROSE charm as well. The are the most cherished bracelets I have now. They are inspired by the Miracle of Barbaro and were given to me in the simplest terms of friendship and kindness. Thank You!!!

Barbaro...I am humbled by you and all of your new friends. You are the one with casts on your legs, but we are the ones who lean on you.

"YOU LIFT ME UP"

Thanks so much to all of you awesome folks who are joining up for the many causes for the betterment of animals. It's truly inspiring and so nice to feel that I'm not alone in my beliefs.

I was really dismayed today when I sent the "quick and simple" version of how to contact our Representative via email to some friends and co-workers, and the ONE who slammed me was the ONLY horse owner in the bunch! She cited the fact that the AQHA, AVMA and AAEP are NOT behind the bill. I agree that ending commercial slaughter will not end suffering and neglect of horses (and sadly might cause some cases) and know that much work needs to be done, but killing these animals in such a brutal manner hardly seems a justifiable answer to this problem.

Love this quote from Henry Beston, which seems appropriate for all we are working for:

"For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings: they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the Earth."

Strength and sunshine to Barbaro and Fog.

(Don't forget Mike Rea's birthday 9/12).

Bobby, sweet Bobby, another great day! Here's to a great night, and many, many, many more of both in the days, weeks, months and years to come. Sleep well and be careful getting up and down!

Foggy, I believe that tonight, you are healing too.

Bobby, here's the letter I've sent to the Missouri delegation. I could see your beautiful face while I composed it. Send some of your magic to Congress, baby.

THE BARBARO EFFECT SHALL CONTINUE!

I live in the Hon. Russell Carnahan's district, but as a citizen of Missouri, I am contacting the entire Missouri delegation regarding this legislation, as well as many other representatives throughout the U.S.

I am one of several thousand concerned citizens across the country who have been working together via the Internet in this election year to educate ourselves, the public, and our Congress, about horse slaughter in the U.S. By now, you have heard from many of us, as well as representatives from well-respected organizations such as the Humane Society and the horse racing industry, to name but a few.

I am urging you to vote "yea" when HR 503 comes up for vote on Thursday, September 07, and to reject the last-minute amendments recently tacked on in committee that undermine the intent of this legislation.

Every year, more than 65,000 horses are killed in the U.S. so their flesh can be sold for food in Europe and Japan. In 2005-2006, the number exceeded 90,000. Horsemeat is not a necessity for survival in these markets and is NOT a tool to alleviate world hunger; it is a delicacy consumed primarily by more affluent citizens.

Horsemeat is in higher demand in Europe and Asia now because so many countries have banned American beef due to the mad cow scare. Yet, ironically, the vast majority of domestic horses receive vaccines and other medications on a regular basis, particularly show and race horses. Premarin mares are pumped full of hormones to enable them to come into cycle and be re-impregnated as soon as they have foaled, so that they continue to produce a certain hormone used in human female hormone replacement therapy.

Horses previously used for racing, rodeos, at riding schools, as pets and companions, for pleasure riding, and for Premarin production are the everyday victims of the horse-flesh trade, as well as our nation's wild horses and burros. Contrary to what opponents of this legislation claim, the vast majority of horses killed in the three American slaughterhouses are young and healthy. They'd have to be, wouldn't they? Their flesh would not be considered "prime" and would not command such a high price overseas otherwise, just as we do not slaughter and package sick and aged cattle and hogs in our own country for our own human consumption.

Many horses sent to slaughter were not intended for such by their owners. Many owners, unable to keep their horses for a variety of reasons, sell them in good faith, believing they will go to a good home. Unfortunately, these horses end up in the hands of "kill buyers" whose sole motivation is to sell the horse for slaughter.

There are many horse rescue organizations across the country who stand ready, willing, and able to help with unwanted horses. If HR 503 and SB 1915 pass, these rescue organizations will no longer be forced to try to outbid "kill buyers" at auctions and private sales, and can take more horses into their organizations. I'll be happy to provide you with the names of some horse rescue organizations if you'd like.

Horses bound for slaughter are packed tightly onto trucks and often shipped without food or water, after being forced into the trucks by whips and cattle prods. The trip to the slaughterhouse is often very long and stressful, sometimes in excess of 24 hours. Most transport trucks are too small for the horses to fully stand up, causing significant discomfort and trauma to the animals. Horses frequently arrive at the slaughterhouse dehydrated, severely injured, or dead. Unloading the trucks again involves whips and cattle prods and brutality.

When they enter the slaughterhouse, the horses can hear and smell the slaughter ahead of them. They are forced into a "kill box" where they are struck in the head with a stun bolt. However, horses are by nature "prey" animals, which means when hurt, frightened, or both, their adrenaline level skyrockets and their instinct is to lash out with their hooves and run away from the source of fright and pain. When in the "kill box", a struggle usually ensues, prolonging the pain and fear, and making it far less likely that the stun bolt will cause brain death. More often, the horse is injured but conscious and alive.

As we know from recent events, many experts believe that humans on life support, even when brain dead, can still experience pain. Horses, too, are mammals, with similar brains and nervous systems.

Back to the slaughter: after being hit with the stun bolt, horses are hung upside-down by a rear leg. Their throats are then slit and their bodies dismembered. Many horses are still alive at this point in the proceedings. I urge you to view a video of actual slaughter, available at www. HSUS.org.

Please do not accept the argument that stun bolts are a humane method of execution/euthanasia. Do you know of a single American state, or any sovereign nation with a death penalty, INCLUDING North Korea and Iran, that uses stun bolts for execution? The answer is no, and the reason is simple: stun bolts do not guarantee death.

WE DO NOT EAT HORSEMEAT IN AMERICA. Even our pets do not eat it. The practice of including horsemeat in our domestic pet food ended almost 30 years ago. Why are we killing our horses and burros for gourmet consumption in foreign countries?

Horse slaughter has been outlawed in many states. For example, after horse slaughter was outlawed in California, horse THEFT dropped by 40%. Yes, horse theft is not merely a colorful tale of bygone days in the Old West. It is alive and well today to help feed the demand of slaughterhouses.

We do not have horse slaughterhouses in Missouri, and it is my understanding that it has been outlawed in our state. You'll recall that in the early 1990's, a French company opened a horse slaughterhouse in Desloges, MO. It did not remain open very long. The citizens of our state would not tolerate its presence. It is equally unacceptable to tolerate its presence in Illinois and Texas.

I urge you to please help support the Anti-Slaughter Bill, HR 503; and to reconcile it with its Senate version, SB 1915. We need to stop horse slaughter in this country, and ban export/transport of our horses, mules and burros to the Canadian and Mexican slaughterhouses (and others overseas).

I also urge you to NOT permit any "grandfather" provisions that would allow the three American horse slaughterhouses to remain open; and to include language in this legislation to encourage and reward responsible horse breeding and selling practices, and humane euthanasia practices for horses who are too sick or infirm to keep alive.

Thank you for your courtesy in reading this missive, and for supporting the Anti-Slaughter bill.

Even though I am very familiar with HR503, I have to say I still can't help but feel sick to my stomach. I would hope that our own unpleasant feelings we experience when reading this can be transferred to the people with the power to end this practice.

Although graphic, the points in your letter are not only true, but necessary. May the recipients of your letter feel as sick as we do when reading this, and may they be compelled to make a difference.

Thank you for your efforts in writing this letter, I know it must not of been easy.

Just curious on my sports page under horseracing
[on the internet]there is a picture of Barbaro
grazing outside, the picture was taken by Jamie
Squire/Getty Images. Barbaro is wearing a blue blanket that is trimed in red. I have checked on Barbaro daily ever since his injury, and sometimes checked several times a day. When I look at the above picture I noticed its either a very old picture, or a miracle, because Barbaro does't have
a cast on either hind leg, anyone have a clue?
Oh, by the way, he looks wonderful.

## David,

It's probably old - Pre-Preakness, or around Fair Hill. He has a blue/red VF one he has worn in some Getty images I have seen. And if there is no casts, it is old. Barbaro as you know, still has his cast on his right rear, as well as left foot. He still looks fabulous though! Hope this helps.

Susan E. - What a pointed and pragmatic letter you have prepared. Wish we had that letter to reproduce to every one of the recalcitrant, stubborn and worse legislators who continue to support the slaughterhouse concept. Powerful, to the point.

To those asking for more candles for Barbaro and Fog, I don't see any evidence that BB is for Big Brother, but do see that the "gratefulness" site is having a malfunction. If you try to light more than one candle for a group, it reverts to what it calls a "new" group (apparently the BB group), and that "BB" group with the high numbers now includes candles for our Big B, Fog, other horses, Harry Aleo and Greg Gilchrist, and many more - I noticed this last night, but didn't have time to follow up. I think that explains the sudden loss of numbers for the Barba and Foggy sites and the sudden explosion of numbers for "BB".

Hope for a massive turnout of telephone calls tomorrow... what an opportunity we have to make a difference, in spite of Fox pseudo-journalists.

Ryan, so very sorry to hear about Kansas. Horses are so sensitive, so attached to their buddies, and such incredible souls that the void must be enormous for you and Erin and your horse family. I hope you can all console each other and celebrate your memories of Kansas...

Bless the beasts tonight; may we have a victory to celebrate in their honor soon. Thank you, beautiful Barbaro, inspiration to the imagination, bigger than life bearer of dreams. Boost your brother, guide him out of the Fog and into the light you inhabit. We cherish you and the family who surrounds you with love.

Actually, if you go to the "gratefulness" site to light candles and look at any other candle, it also reverts to the "new" group which is the "BB" group...

Great good weather morning to you and your charges, Alex. Thank you again for your above and beyond efforts to keep this family intact and to provide a forum for horse health and welfare issues. You have fostered a community of substance and compassion. Congratulations, Champ!

NANCY IN CT--Up early today...I think there's another Jane in our state. She just signs as "jane"...jane, are there two of us? :)

Naughty, crazy...call us what you will. I am proud our CT reps are on board! I called and emailed Shays today. I think he co-sponsored the legislation to make provisions for pets part of disaster planning, so I'm not surprised he's pro HR503.

#######

JEANETTE--wow, what a Derby video. Bobby knows how to mug for the camera, doesn't he? What a great tail :) Will it grow back now (along with his hoof?)

########

SHARONLYNN--how do I access your book? You said there was a link on update 48, but I can't find it, and can't find it in the forum topics either. Please e me at jfieberts@charter.net. I want to add my .02 in praise of the great Bobby folks. Thanks :)

ERNIE--My T shirt didn't have washing instructions. How do we handle the decal?

Congrats to Edgar, what a guy!

ShelleyA--we're so proud of you.

Here's what I emailed Hannity. Thanks to others who included all the necessary (and horrible) details about the slaughtering process:

Dear Mr. Hannity,

Ronald Reagan must be rolling over in his grave.

A compassionate and caring horseman and animal lover, Mr. Reagan would have been appalled had he heard you dismissing the importance of HR503 to be voted on Thursday.

Do you have a pet cat or dog, or know anyone who does? If your pet had been disabled or you couldn't keep him, can you imagine your beloved animal being slaughtered for food by putting a bolt through his brain?

That's what happens in American slaughterhouses today. There are two such facilities in Texas and one in Illinois.

People sometimes sell their horses, thinking they are going to a good home, only to find that butchers have bought them and sent them to these slaughterhouses.

This in inhumane, and inhuman. More than 100,000 horses a year meet their fate in this disgusting, horrible way--including a Kentucky Derby winner, Ferdinand, and champion Exceller.

Can you imagine Barbaro being slaughtered if he couldn't recover from his injuries?

These animals are not slaughtered for the American market; it is not part of our culture to eat horses. But abroad, in France especially, these horses end up on the dining table as gourmet food.

There are many important issues facing Congress, but this is a very important election year, and those of us who are truly compassionate about supporting life are watching closely to see how our representatives will vote on this issue.

Think of it as a litmus test: If you don't care about protecting life in one of its most valued forms, then perhaps you don't care about life at all.

I would invite you to watch a video of horses being slaughtered, and then tell me that this is a practice that should continue to be allowed.

Let's hope that Congress can accomplish SOMETHING this year. This one really is a no-brainer. Every representative should vote in favor of H.R. 503, with no amendments.

Best regards,
J. Fieberts

I too was angered when I heard Shawn Hannity make his dismissive remarks while watching Hannity & Colmes yesterday, so I fired off this email to him. (Sorry that it's kind of long, but I really felt the need to give this man a piece of my mind.)

Dear Mr. Hannity,

I was extremely dismayed to hear your dismissive remark regarding "horse protection" on your television show today. Shame on you Mr. Hannity. While I understand there are many important political issues right now, to make such a remark is not only irresponsible but shows your apparent ignorance regarding the issue of horse slaughter in the United States for human consumption abroad. I understand you also made the same type of dismissive remarks regarding "horse protection" on your radio talk show. While you may think that the House of Representatives has far more important matters to tend to, I will have you know that many people have worked very hard on this issue for years. Are you at all familiar with horse slaughter for human consumption abroad? Have you ever taken the time to educate yourself about this issue? If you have not, I would highly recommend you do just a little research before making the kind of remarks you made today. To simply dismiss this issue as not important is not only misguided at best, it is appalling. While you may not care about the welfare of America's majestic, noble horses, many Americans do and want to see an end to horse slaughter in our country. Is that not what our government is supposed to be all about by the way? What the people care about and want? The fight to ban horse slaughter in this country has been going on for a number of years now. I am sorry if the timing of this bill offends your sensibilities. It would also serve you well to remember that concern for this issue does not preclude one from being concerned with other important issues. I believe the government can handle terrorism and horse slaughter all in a day's work. If they cannot, God help us all.

Mahatma Gandhi once said that a country will be judged by how it treats its animals. If we continue to allow the horrific slaughtering of our horses by foreign-owned slaughterhouses so people in Belgium, France, and Japan can eat high-end horse meat in fancy restaurants, I think our country will be, and should be, judged very harshly indeed. Horses have played such an integral part in our nation's history; they have taken us into war, pulled our plows, raced for our entertainment and profit--often to their own destruction in doing so--they deserve far better treatment. They deserve our care and respect. They are not a food animal in this country. Why then are we allowing OUR horses to be slaughtered for human consumption abroad? Are you aware that Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand ended up in a Japanese slaughterhouse? A KENTUCKY DERBY winner! Same thing happened to another great champion, Exceller. These horses were considered to be elite athletes and yet somehow still met a horrific end in a slaughterhouse. Do we want to represent ourselves as people who only care about the profit an animal can provide us and once their money-making days have ended, we callously dispose of them and send them off to be brutally butchered? How do we reconcile allowing our horses to be slaughtered while claiming to be a compassionate, caring nation? People from all across this great country have embraced the injured reigning Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro. How loud do you think the public outcry would be if we were to learn one day that Barbaro was led to slaughter?

Mr. Hannity, have you ever witnessed a horse being slaughtered in one of these slaughterhouses? Opponents of H.R. 503 will lead you to believe that slaughter is humane euthanasia. I invite you to watch this clip and then honestly ask yourself if this looks anything like humane euthanasia to you. Click here to watch the 8-minute video: "The Reality of Horse Slaughter"

I could go into all the statistics and facts regarding horse slaughter but I'm asking you to do some research for yourself on this issue. I am assuming you are not familiar with this topic due to the dismissive nature of your remark today, basically inferring that horse slaughter is not important given the current political problems plaguing our nation and the world. If you are educated in regards to this issue, then you are simply callous and without compassion. In the grand scheme of things, I suppose horse slaughter is not the most important issue our government should be addressing, but it is an extremely important issue all the same and deserves far more respect than what you gave it today. It is a dark stain upon our country to allow the continuation of this horror. Quite simply, it brings our country great shame. We are weakened as a society when we allow such cruelty and brutality; we are hardened and made indifferent when we turn our backs on defenseless creatures that depend on us for their welfare; in essence, we learn to devalue life, be it human or animal. To quote Francis of Assisi, "If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men." No truer words were ever spoken.

So, in closing Mr. Hannity, I hope you will take the time to think about what I have said here. Hopefully, even if you still believe this issue not to be worthy of our government's time, you will think twice before making such dismissive remarks about the protection of America's magnificent horses, if for no other reason than out of respect for the thousands of people who do believe this issue to be of utmost importance and who have worked tirelessly to put an end to this cruel and brutal industry once and for all.

Sincerely,

Sandra Gehri-Bergman
