Barbaro Updates: 66

updates are now here.

Update 603: Just spoke to Kathy Anderson, she visited Barbaro about 4:30 pm this afternoon. She was happy with Bobby, she had not been able to visit for a few days and was pleased with what she observed. He seemed bright and alert in his stall, which she said was quite warm (that being a positive thing since we are having decidedly wet fall weather right now)!

Update 602: Edgar Prado continued his winning ways by winning the riding title at Saratoga, and in doing so beating out probably the second (Gomez) and third (Velasquez) leading riders in the country: Prado edges Gomez to win third Saratoga riding title. Now Edgar, time to pay a quick visit!

Other jockeys in the news include Victor Espinoza: Debutante Win Gives Espinoza Del Mar Record, Joe Bravo: Joe Bravo Wins Six Races at Monmouth and Kieran Fallon: Fallon Withdraws Attempt to Ride in Breeders' Cup.

Update 601: New Bolton's release: Barbaro continues to do well:

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to please veterinarians with his progress after his most recent right hind leg cast change last week. "Barbaro is wearing the new cast satisfactorily," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "We continue to monitor him closely, and depending on how he progresses, we may change it again within the next two weeks."

The colt's left hind foot, which has laminitis, continues to improve gradually, according to Dr. Richardson. The bandage on this foot is changed daily.

"Barbaro's appetite is great, and we take him out each day to hand graze him," said Dr. Richardson. "His vital signs remain normal, and he seems very happy."

Barbaro is in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, September 12 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 600: Just spoke to Barclay Tagg, he worked Showing Up this morning as scheduled, on the inner turf, no dogs (i.e. on the rail). He went in 1:01.1 and was very pleased with the work. This will be his last work before the Man o' War on saturday.

New Bolton Center are releasing a Barbaro update today, that should be available shortly.

Its raining hard here now, training hours were cut short!

Update 599: Another comfortable night for Barbaro (monday night). Michael Matz told me as I was just pulling up on Chappy after galloping 1 3/8 mile in my second set. Michael had heard from Dr. Richardson as usual. It's a little bit rainy this morning but it's actually quite pleasant to ride.
updated tuesday 7:10am

Update 598: Another visit to Lost in the Fog has been posted to the discussion board: A Visit with Lost in the Fog, this was a visit from Saturday. The Bring out your best Barbaro tribute contest closes at 2 pm today. Thanks to all those who have submitted entries thus far.

The Jacksons and the managing partner for the ownership group of Funny Cide will be in Washington today: Time and Location Change for Whitfield Press Conference on H.R. 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. The presser notes the conference is 11 pm today, I assume 11 am, but when i called to check yesterday they were on holiday! ShellyA is also in DC for this: INFORMATION FROM DC.

I had been meaning to repost Sabina's link, it includes a couple of additional pictures of Barbaro, and more importantly, a link to this site!

Dan Hendricks is pointing the blame for Brother Derek's fourth last weekend squarely on his own shoulders: Hendricks: Derek wasn't quite fit. I guess I can see what he means. When a horse breezes so easily it means they have obvious talent, but if they are not being pushed then they are not always getting too much out of those breezes. Also, I have now added a link to the site's FAQ to the left.

Good morning Alex, Bobby and team Barbaro,

Thanks for all the great reading material Alex and for the link to Shelley's information from Washington DC. The countdown has begun. Let's hope we all have something to rejoice about when the vote is finally taken. I can't tell you how proud I am of the effort everyone is making to end this industry once and for all. I am also so proud to be a "Barbaromaniac".

Alex - thanks so much for the FAQ link. We can all learn from it.

Yeah Barbaro! ACN, wonderful!

Went to a cookout yesterday and Barbaro was brought up (not by me suprisingly), people were so sympathetic to his situation and many did not know how he was doing!

When I gave them the good news (thank God), they were thrilled! It was so nice to be able to speak on Barbaro's health due to this site.

Morning All,

ACN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Question:

With colder weather approaching will Bobby need to be moved from NBC to a warmer climate????? Don't know how cold weather correlates to his hoof regrowing.

Jazz

Posted by: Jazz at September 5, 2006 12:34 PM

Wow.....it is POURING here!! Not exactly what we would have hoped for!!! And I'm sure not prepared.
I sure would have loved my very first rally to be a nice sunny day...but you play the hand your dealt!

I'm sure this will affect the turn out. I guess those of us here will just have to be louder!!

Desperately looking for a rain slicker or something. Have to pack up my computer now to check out.
Please check out my messages on the forum under Information from DC. There is some great information that I got from the professionals about how to make contacts.

Alex, thank you again for all your help in enabling us to communicate

And thanks to all of you for your good wishes. It helps knowing I have a whole team behind me!!

Please read the forum....it is NOT necessary to speak directly to your rep or senator. The staff member handling animal rights for that person has a tremendous amount of influence on their decision. It's very important to know that. Actually, when you call their office, find out who that person is, and direct your correspondence to them....you can always cc the official.

Catch you later...the buses are waiting.

BRAVO to the Jacksons and ShelleyA for taking action on HR503 and to represent the rest of us who are unable to physically be in Washington.

What time on Thursday Sept. 7 do they vote and how soon will we know the results? 9 years hung up in the mire of politics, let's hope there is some action this week!!

Good morning, everyone!

Since I posted this so late last night, thought it might be worth repeating, in light of the rally in Washington today. The Premarin horses suffer a fate WORSE than death for months or even years, and then are generally sent to slaughter once they're no longer needed. It's been my experience that many doctors prescribing Premarin have no idea how it's manufactured.

#####
Hi Everyone--I know it's late, but thought I'd post a couple of the facts I found on the HSUS website regarding horses used in production of the drug Premarin as it relates to the slaughter issue. Since estrogen replacement therapy has been proven to be harmful in many studies, I know Wyeth--the maker of Premarin and ironically, the parent company of Fort Dodge Animal Health--has shut down at least 1/3 of their PMU farms, and has plans to shut down another 1/3. The fact that far fewer animals will be bred to produce Premarin will hopefully mean far fewer horses sent to slaughter over the next few years. . .

5. What happens to unproductive mares?

PMU mares may be used for several consecutive years?provided, of course, that they become pregnant again during the brief summer breeding season. But because there is a serious overpopulation of horses throughout North America, and PMU mares are often untrained and difficult to handle, there is little demand for them once they have outlived their usefulness as estrogen producers. Typically, barren or unproductive mares are sent to the slaughterhouse.

6. What happens to the foals of PMU mares?

Foals are allowed to nurse and be with their mothers for only three to four months?instead of the normal six-month period. When the time comes for the mares to return to the collection barns, the farmers dispose of surplus foals. A few female foals may be kept for future PMU production, and some farmers even breed registered horses in hopes of selling the foals as riding prospects. Thousands of remaining foals are sent to unsheltered feedlots until they reach a desirable market weight. There they are slaughtered and their carcasses shipped to Europe and Asia for human consumption.

At CafePress.com, type in HR 503 in the search and it does bring up some great designs in support of HR503.
I purchased an Exceller t-shirt last year, and every time I wear it (a line on it says "A Champion in all respects, he deserved a kinder fate) you would not believe the people who knew Exceller, but did not know what happened to him, Ferdinand and what was happening here. They were shocked and wanted to help, so I would direct them to ExcellerFund.org, ReRun and OldFriends.

Praying for the vote this week to go our way. I have friends involved on my end calling, doing all we can here. Shelley, thinking about you and so happy you can be there. Feel us with you there in spirit OK.

Through all the seemingly tedious everyday routines, he remains very happy and content. What an inspiration this wonderful horse is to us all!

Great news again from NBC - so here's to another safe, progressive week.

Have a good one, everyone.

Hi everyone.....

Just back from 4 days in the mountains and no computer to check updates. B's ACN and that's music to our ears.

Kudos to Shelly and her updates from DC. Hope the vote goes our way.

While I was gone I received an email back from one of the N Cal writers covering Foggy. This is all old news now but at least she responded.

Hi Cathy!
The sonograms are inconlusive. The good news: The tumors aren't getting any bigger. But it's hard to tell if they're shrinking -- yet. We have a conference call with Greg Gilchrist soon. He's keeping a very positive attitude and The Fog is doing his part -- he's feisty as ever. Bloodhorse.com will have something posted later this afternoon.
Thanks!
Debbie

Hello,

I'm inquiring on behalf of a large contingent of Barbaromaniacs at the Tim Whoolley Racing site who are waiting with baited breath on the results of The Fogs sonogram. Do you have any news you can share on this?

It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Just called c-Span to ask about the news conference and the Jacksons , etc. and was told ,by a rather curt woman ,that they are not carrying it . They must be getting lots of calls , which are getting to her ! I'm sure it's not her fault, but still...

Spread Barbaro Effect , spread. Big Barbaro, you are such a centerpiece for so much good.

Well. toronto would Know all about "tedious" having to constantly offer "inspiration" to the world, but, that's just the Linguistic/Philosophical Take on such words. With respect to Barbaro, it's the to-be-hoped-for, okey-dokey, hitch-in-the-gitty-up status quo, which we all long to hear re this beloved horse..Best wishes, †KAWilson

Prado Tops All-Star Cast of Jockeys During Saratoga Meet
by Claire E. Novak
Date Posted: 9/5/2006 11:03:42 AM
Last Updated: 9/5/2006 11:03:42 AM

With 10 mounts on Monday's closing card at Saratoga, jockey Edgar Prado rode three winners to earn the third riding title of his career at the Spa.
Showing typical diversity among trainers and bettors, Prado booted home Delta Sea ($17.80) for James Ferraro, Iron Goddess ($3.00) for Michael Hushion, and Moya ($25.80) for Shug McGaughey.

"It's been up and down this year, but [riding at Saratoga] really helped me to keep on going," said the 39-year-old jockey, who rode the undefeated Barbaro to victory in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and pulled him up when the horse was injured in the Preakness (gr. I).

Along with the peaks and valleys of the spring, Prado is enjoying a highly successful season in New York. Leading the nation with $12,688,398 in purse earnings, he came off a 65-win riding title at Belmont Park to finish the Saratoga meet with 46 wins.

"I think everybody worked really hard during this meet, and I take my hat off to everybody in the jockeys' room, they all did a super job," Prado said. "It's very special to win the title at Saratoga, because we're in the eyes of everybody – trainers, owners, and the public. There are no words to describe it... it's like heaven on earth right here."

West coast rider Garrett Gomez, who found success at Belmont in April while replacing the injured John Velazquez aboard trainer Todd Pletcher's best mounts, developed a strong following among New York horsemen and finished second to Prado with 42 wins.

Although Velazquez returned to riding in July, Gomez retained many of his key connections and turned the race for the title into a closely-waged competition. Riding at Saratoga for the first time in his 18-year career, the 34-year-old jockey brought home four of Pletcher's nine stakes winners, including the grade I Hopeful victory Circular Quay, one of his two wins on closing day.

"I'm more than thrilled with the way the meet went," said Gomez, who will return to Belmont for the fall meet. "It seemed like our momentum built. Our business turned out to be really good and we were lucky enough to get on some really nice horses. I enjoyed myself completely, my family had a great time, there were no expectations on me coming in and the doors that opened were phenomenal."

Thought by many to be the most talented group of riders seen at one meet on the East Coast for quite some time, the 2006 Saratoga colony included journeymen Cornelio Velasquez, Eibar Coa, and Javier Castellano, and young talent like Julien Leparoux, Rafael Bejarano, and Fernando Jara. Prado said this year's riding colony was the toughest he's ridden against in his 23-year career.

"You can pick from one to 10 and they still have a chance to win the race, that's how tough it is," Prado said. "It pushes you a little more every day. You want to win one, two, three. This year has been a real tough (jockey) colony. It was a constellation of the stars here in the jockey's room."

I went to NBC and reread the press release on Barbaro today.

On this second reading , I was especially sruck by the phrase " his vitals are normal , and he
seems happy " .Maybe that's not an exact quote, but close.

I am so happy , getting a deep feeling of warmth and true joy , when I think of his being happy. How in the world he is I don't know, after all the procedures and confinement , etc. , but through some special grace of God he is. Bless him.

Hello Barbaro, heard you are still doing good. Had a chance over the weekend to visit the New Bolton Center. What a great place for our horse to heal. Signed your get well card. Saw the barn you were housed in and peaked in the window to see you. Ran into your owners, the Jacksons, on our way out. What good owners they are! They were bringing you all kinds of horse goodies. I bet they were good. One of the workers told us there is a two humped camel, owned by a shiek, that was there for recovery. I am sure with all the wonderful people that work there, and with some help from God, it will not be long before you are better. Keep up the good work, God loves you, and we do too!

Holding on for Bobby's recovery....
--------------

Hold on to what is good even if it is a handful of earth.

Hold on to what you believe even if it is a tree which stands by itself.

Hold on to what you must do even if it is a long way from here.

Hold on to life even when it is easier letting go.

Hold on to my hand even when I have gone away from you.

I will Hold on to you Sweet Bobby J.

###No, Shelly, not having a bad day, in the least! -and just thinking, as a matter of fact, that I hadn't been *complete* with that bit of the Work, so thanks for your added note. You have [in your earlier post], and no doubt inadvertantly, *perfectly described* "gracelessness", by linking two words; ie. tedious, and inspiration. I was lax to suggest that this is a linkage that is merely of linguistic and philosophical significance and interest. It is also philological and -medical (physical). -"respiration"might be "tedious", but when "inspiration" is "tedious", Shelly, you get: gracelessness. In fact, yes, that is the picture of Canada, likely, always, from my research, but certainly, since 1992.Thank for your note. Best wishes, †KAWilson

Posted by: Kathleen A. Wilson at September 5, 2006 4:43 PM

Kathleen - huh?

Anyways, tedious to the horse perhaps for his daily routine and being couped up in a stall. Most horses I would think wouldn't stay as bright under the circumstances. Just looking at it perhaps from a horse's standpoint.

Canada is a beautiful country.....

That being said - let's remember why we're here and just drop it.

Best wishes to everyone on Team Barbaro.

###We're here for Barbaro, -yes. And Barbaro, as I have stated elsewhere on this list, has many meanings, ONE of which is LARGE, and is likely unknown to you. Many things may or may not be known by you, and if, in 2006, you believe that "Canada is a beautiful country", you are seriously in the Dark on that. But you ARE correct to say that that is not the point of this List. I wrote because I was attempting, in other tasks today, to describe something which I found difficult to describe. I looked at the list -just to take a break- and saw the two words in your note, and it became quite clear. Generally speaking, this list should not be used for these matters. I hardly ever read it, in fact, except for the updates, and to post as I see fit[test -or, most favorably aspected] :) So if you wish to respond to this, feel free to write to me fieldfare@klis.com and as time permits and volition directs, I will respond to you. Best wishes, †KAWilson

Cheryl Jones - regarding animal issues in northern NM. There are a lot of pockets of very rural, and old communities in these parts, very well hidden and off the beaten path. And 'stuff' goes on. Cock fighting, dog fighting, cattle and horse abuse, grazing cattle on BLM land when their is nothing for them to eat or drink, breeding sick, lame, and old horses in hopes of selling the foal and getting money, using unwanted puppies to train fighting dogs (I rescued one), cutting off the ears of pit bull puppies without using anethesia, cutting out tongues of dogs so they can get a bigger bite on people (this tactic mostly used by meth people), and I could go on and on. A lot of this is a result of the drug problems, relatives in the law enforcement agencies that won't go after their 'own'. Add to this people that move here to find a more peaceful life and for the most part will walk around with their heads in the clouds. A lot of people come here in the early Spring to try and become 'hippies' for the summer. When the weather starts getting cold, they leave, and they abandon all of the dogs they accrued over the summer. We brace ourselves for dog dumping season every fall. Most of the puppies under 6 months old are shipped to Denver for adoption. There is a shortage of dogs up there due to the effective spay and neuter programs. There is a very old world attitude here and I really can't cope with it anymore. I am sure you have moved to a more progressive area than I am in. I am not saying anything that people here don't already realize. Even our Governor referred to cock fighting as part of 'our' culture.

Sorry for the length of this post. I could write a book on this subject. It's like nothing you can imagine.

Not only Another Comfortable Night (thanks, Alex, Michael, Peter, Dr. R) - What a wonderful report from NBC - I am KVELLING MIT NACHAS - especially upon seeing the new photos (THANKS FOR THE LINK, Alex, I missed it B4) of Barbaro by Sabina and with Sabina. They portray without a doubt, how good this horse feels. Made me cry again!

Got my Barbaro T-shirt (nose in the roses) just before the weekend (THANKS ERNIE!) and so was able to wear it to the joint where we performed last night. Remember my tale about a patron who did not realize Barbaro was still alive, who was so thrilled when I was able to tell him he was recovering and doing well? He was there last night, admired the T-shirt - which got the conversation immediately to Barbaro - and was so happy to hear the continuing good news.

I sent the HSUS slaughter ban link to virtually everyone in my address book. Please all, remember to send the info out to all your connections, even those you don't identify as "horse people." It's scary how many people don't know a thing about this subject.

Margie...

thanks for the enlightment and don't apologize for the length of the post..For some reason (stupid of me) New Mexico didn't come to mind when you mentioned the West. It is abhorrant and repugnant to have those practices continue and as it appears, even condoned. I wish that there could be more proactive people like you out there. I wish we could do more. I suppose it's rather like the starfish thrower. If you save one, it matters for that one, and for that you should feel proud.

Isn't Barbaro (Horse of Forever) Jackson a superstar?!

Wasn't the e-mail from the northern cal reporter posted by Cathy Potter heartening?
While I was gone I received an email back from one of the N Cal writers covering Foggy. This is all old news now but at least she responded.
Hi Cathy!
The sonograms are inconclusive.
Thanks!
Debbie

I contacted my Rep (Mike Rogers) from SE Michigan and got a noncommittal responses. "I'm not sure how the Congressman will vote on this matter, but he has voted in the past to ban the slaughter of horses." I voiced my "strong request" that Rep. Rogers vote in favor of the bill. I followed up with an e-mail.

I wonder whether this is on the radar for a lot of the reps. Maybe if more people call it'll get their attention.

Great to hear that our beautiful boy is doing so well and is "very happy." Thanks, as always, for the updates.
____________

Shelley A,

Stay warm and dry (if you can). I hope you know how proud we are of you!

I'll be with you all for tomorrow's vigil.
____________

Kathleen Wilson,

Your posts to Shelley in Toronto regarding the "gracelessness" of my country shocked me. It goes without saying that it is more than bad manners to disparage a nation on this board, and that doing so damages the gracious spirit that Alex and the caring people who post here are working for. Until and unless ALL of us remain respectful of the individuals (and the heritages) of the others here, a great disservice is done to this website and to its owners.

Barbaro and Fog, you both are in my thoughts and prayers - may God continue to heal you both inside and out. Keep strong and keep fighting - we are all pulling for you both.

#######
I had posted this late Saturday night (sorry for bringing it up again), just wanted to let you all know who may not have seen it with the holiday weekend and all - and I'm sorry to 'bring down' the mood and all the wonderful news and progress with the horse slaughter bill with a semi-off topic subject, but on Saturday we lost Kansas - I won't make this long but could you please pray for Erin and myself, and especially Erin as this horse and her were so connected.

Erin is keeping busy and trying not to think about but I know it's hurting her and unfortunately I can't be with her right now but will be in a few weeks. Erin also tells me Trinity is beside herself, as her and Kansas were close too (stablemates, etc).

Kansas and her got to spend a lot of time together recently preparing for a commands and barrel racing competition, where they won both. :)

More importantly though, he saved Erin's life twice - once he scared off a bear (yes, it's true) and another time he ran from where they were to the barn where her dad was and whinnied and jumped to get his attention until he followed him in a truck to Erin who had passed out and needed to go to the hospital. He was a truly remarkable and intelligent horse, as so many are, as you all know.

Please keep them in your prayers, and we thank you for your prayers and for reading this, from the bottom of our hearts.

Just got this email. From the Humane Society of the United States in case anyone else wants to call in.

September 5, 2006

Dear Sharon,

National Call-In Day for Horses is tomorrow! A vote on the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503) is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7. Your help is needed to permanently move American horses beyond the reach of slaughterhouse butchers.

Last year, almost 100,000 American horses suffered and died in the United States in foreign-owned slaughterhouses so that their flesh could be flown to Europe and Asia for human consumption. We must send a clear signal to the world that our horses are not here to be slaughtered for food and we do not want them on the chopping block for foreign diners.

Here's what you can do to help:

1. Make the call Sept. 6. Call your U.S. Representative, Scott Garrett, at (202) 225-4465, or call the Congressional switchboard at (202) 224-3121. If you're not sure what to say, try this: "I am a constituent and I am calling to ask that the Representative please protect American horses from slaughter and support H.R. 503, the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I also urge you to oppose any amendments to H.R. 503. I am very concerned about American horses and I don't want them slaughtered."

2. Let us know you called. Follow up your phone calls by letting us know you called to support the end of horse slaughter in the United States.

Please take both steps! We must light up the phones in the Capitol because there already is very vigorous lobbying by the slaughter industry and its allies. We must counter them at every turn.

Please encourage your friends and family to make the call, too. Your calls will not only make a difference, they will help make history. Help us end horse slaughter in the United States forever.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle
President & CEO
The Humane Society of the United States

On the long drive to our gig last night, I was telling my music partner about the great day that Edgar Prado had, leading jockey at Saratoga, and also mentioned how Victor Espinoza had a winning streak that tied Bill Shoemaker's record, and that VE was being compared to Mr. Shoemaker by the announcers, re riding style. My pal started raving about Shoemaker, said he was his all-time favorite jockey, and then said,
"My favorite Kentucky Derby of all time was watching him win on Ferdinand." I said, "Do you know that Ferdinand wound up being slaughtered in Japan?" and he practically crashed the van - he was dumbfounded, said "HOW COULD THAT HAPPEN?" and I told him; how Ferdinand was sent to Japan as a stud and when they were through with him he wound up at a slaughterhouse. My pal just couldn't believe it, and also was kind of taken aback that he never heard about it before. (He fancies himself on top of all the news he needs to know.)

We need to talk about this stuff with the non-dyed-in-the-wool horse-people. And don't forget to mention Ferdinand.

I got a laugh out of it myself.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at September 5, 2006 7:26 PM

Sept. 2, 2006 — Bo Derek made a splash in "10," but now she's making waves in Washington as an ambassador for animal protection. She's also lobbying Congress to stop the commercial slaughter of America's horses.

Bo Derek: This has been a very dirty, quiet, little secret in my opinion, these slaughter houses. … This horse meat isn't going to countries that need the protein, where there might be a famine. It goes to gourmet restaurants that actually, in some instances, advertise "eat an American horse."

The story of Ferdinand, the great race horse, it got the thoroughbred race industry involved. … Ferdinand was an American hero, Kentucky Derby winner in 1986. … He was sent over to Japan … as a stallion. And when he got older and was no longer useful as a stallion for breeding, he was slaughtered for human consumption. … That began this drive to end horse slaughter in our country.

You can liken it to Barbaro. Look at the concern our country has had over this horse who hurt himself racing for us. … In fact, the owners of Barbaro sent out a letter to every congressman and [congress]woman in the House, "Would you eat Barbaro?"

It's handwritten letters that still affect our representatives. Congressman [John] Spratt [D-S.C.] said it's the — what did he call it — the butterfinger letters. He said, "It's the letters you can see a housewife maybe sat down and had butter on her fingers, and there are smudges on a handwritten letter." And he said that those letters will still affect his vote more than anything, more than any lobbyist.

Ryan, all of you are in my prayers...Kansas was a loyal, brave and noble horse. This has to be so hard for Erin as well.

Its been raining in Chester County all day...don't know if Barbaro will be able to graze today...

Take care, everybody.

From the link

One year ago, Barbaro was just a two-year-old colt trying to get a foot in the door of the horse racing scene.

He’d never run a race. No one quite knew his potential. On May 4, 2005, his trainer Michael Matz led him to Fair Hill Training Center’s practice-starting gate for the first time.

In a real race, horses are loaded one-by-one into a starting gate. When the buzzer sounds, the gate doors open and the horses charge out.

At least that’s what happens on a good day at the racetrack. On a bad day, an anomaly inside the gate could cause a horse to have a bad start. That could squash his chances of winning.

Practice with the starting gate doesn’t always guarantee a perfect race, but it helps. Barbaro can attest to that.

The steel-green practice gate at Fair Hill Training Center sits on a one-mile track and has four doors in which to load horses. Matz and others who train at Fair Hill use it to get their horses prepared for the gates they will spring from on race days. Horses like to be around other horses, so trainers put them through gate training more than one at a time.

Last May, with the help of Fair Hill gate operator Bryan Craft, Matz led Barbaro through the open gate and back again a few times to get him familiar.

Barbaro stayed calm and dignified, so they moved him on to the next step in gate training: breaking.

Breaking is when the race begins and the horses rush out of the gate onto the track. To get Fair Hill horses prepared for this, an exercise rider will get on the horse, Craft will sound a bell, the battery-operated gate doors will open and the rider will steer the horse out of the gate and onto the track. They start slow, and eventually over a few days work the horse out of the gate at a full gallop.

Matz brings his horses to the practice gate about three times a week, Craft said. Even experienced horses get a few runs through the gate this often.

“This way it’s just part of the horses’ normal routine,” Craft said Wednesday. “A lot of trainers, once they get the horses OK with the gate, they never see the (practice) gate again unless it becomes a problem. But all of Michael’s horses are pretty good about being around the gate because he brings them here so much.”

Barbaro’s first time with the practice gate still stands out in Craft’s mind.

“Barbaro was just a perfect student, as far as the starting gate goes,” Craft said. “We didn’t know how good he was until he started breaking. That’s when Michael and everyone started saying, ‘This horse might be all right.’”

Barbaro never made a bad step inside the Fair Hill practice gates during trainings, Craft said. But at his very first race, in November at Delaware Park, the horse didn’t want to get in the gate.

“It was his first time ever to the races, and everything was a little different,” Craft said. “He was just a little bit of a pain in the (rear) at first.”

They got him in the gate eventually n and he managed to win the race. It set the tempo for his entire career so far: Of the six times he’s raced, Barbaro hasn’t lost one yet. Craft said he’s never had another problem getting Barbaro into the starting gate at a race.

“We just brought him back here and schooled him three or four times and he’s been great ever since,” he said.

Other big-name horses have run into major trauma at gate time. While prepping for his first career start, during a schooling session at the gate at Philadelphia Park, Smarty Jones rammed his head into an iron bar, fracturing his skull. He underwent months of treatment and finally made it back to racing, winning the Kentucky Derby two years ago.

This year’s Derby race started a bit scarily for Barbaro too, Craft said.

“Some people said he stumbled when he came out of the gate,” he said. “He took a bad step and bobbed a bit when he came out.”

Craft said he watched replays of Barbaro’s Derby start dozens of times and realized where the horse may have initially slipped up.

“I saw that before the doors opened, he lifted up his right leg two inches off the ground,” Craft said. “Then when the bell went off he had his leg lifted up and it just tripped him up a bit.”

Matz asked Craft this week what they can do to prevent a similarly stumbled start in the Preakness next weekend.

“He said, ‘How do you stop him from doing that?’ I said there’s nothing you can really do, you just train him well enough so he can get out of the gate and run a quick race,” Craft said.

Craft said Matz will probably bring Barbaro over to the starting gate a few times between now and when the team leaves for Baltimore’s Pimlico Racetrack a week from now.

About Barbaro’s early Derby stumble, Craft added: “He recovered from it pretty quick.”

And besides, even after the trip-up, the big guy won the race.

TLC,
It is exactly what it sounds like, learning. A horse can't just go into the gate on his first try, he has to be shown the gate, until he is comfortable with it, walked through it, has to learn how to stand in it with the doors open...has to learn how to accept the confinement.
If it fails, as in the case of Miraculous Miss's accident, back to school to get a new gate card !!
Sorry I didn't answer before, wasn't here.

According to CNN 12% of Americans are happy with Congress for the way they handled the horse slaughter bill. 84% say they wish Congress had done more.

I haven't heard if this bill has finally gotten defeated. But I think this is good.

I don't know how many of these Senators are up for re-election but maybe a next step would be to talk to those folk running for office and finding out where they stand on this issue.

If this bill failed to pass (I HAVEN'T HEARD ONE WAY OR THE OTHER SO PLEASE TAKE THAT INTO CONSIDERATION BEFORE BASHING ME)I wonder if it can be repealed at some point and how we'd go about it?

Well Barbaro my friend I have taken more than my fair share of time here today. Have a good evening and a sound snooze tonight. I continue to watch from afar and am so happy that things seem to be going well for you. Hang in there. We love you Barbaro.

Shelley in Toronto & Joyce Moore,

Do not attempt to adjust your television ......
You briefly entered the Twilight Zone, but thankfully no one got hurt! [Except, inexplicably, Canada - of all things to besmerch in this world full of things that actually ARE awful!] I visited the Twilight Zone last week and came back with no answers to the "Weekly Jumble", but it was interesting in a wierd way, I guess.

Yeah, Barbaro,
For your name and the word "happy" to be in the same sentence . . . Oh, JOY JOY JOY. That has to be the best sentence I have read in MONTHS.

Along with so many others, I add my thanks to Shelley A. for her dedication and hard work. I printed information I found on the web about Excellor after the T-shirt was mentioned. I'll have to read the print-out at home because if I read it here I will not be able to work.

Congratulations to our Hero, Edgar Prado! Well done, sir.

Does anyone know if Barbaro's groom has been able to visit him at NBC? Of all the special people in his life, perhaps Barbaro knows him best. I'll need the opinions of the "horse-people" to know if that assumption on my part is correct.

Thank you for giving us the news, Alex!

Just spoke to Rep Tod Akin for MO about the HS bill. He said he doesnt know enough about it yet to give a definitive answer on how he will vote (Or IF) I would think he ought to get off his butt and find out. When is the vote coming up? Jen

Renee,
Barbaro is actually trying to BITE his pony! I love that photo cause it shows Barbaro "all full of himself", just finished winning the Kentucky Derby, and then as if to "show off" bites the pony. LOL

Patti in Sherman Oaks -

YES! Call him/her anyway. Constant whining works. (That's how I got rid of my ex).

If your rep is a co-sponsor, it means he/she already supports the bill -- but it still couldn't hurt to call or write and encourage their continued support. I know some reps have bailed in the past so we need to keep as many on board as possible. And by all means do call anyone who is either opposed or on the fence. The election is coming up and if enough constituents express an interest, who knows what could happen?

Glenda O, thanks for the "Twilight Zone" chuckle! I don't post much at all but I do often read everyone else's posts, and when I get to those I find myself shaking my head. The TZ reference is perfect.

To All, Concerning negative promotion of HR 503

I just returned home from running a few errands. I had talk radio on and heard Shawn Hannity "poo-pooing" the importance of the US Congress debating and concerning themselves with the Horse Protection Bill. Now, either this widely listened to radio host is just ignorant as to what HR 503 is all about, or he is a heartless strictly-polital hack, who has been courted by some pro-slaughter groups...I really can't say for sure.

I am inclined to think, the FORMER...that he just has no idea that the bill is about the prevention of cruel & inhumane horse slaughter in our civilized and compassionate America.

I tried to call the show but cannot get through. I am going to try to E-mail him via FOX NEWS and try to better inform him.

He just kept harping on what he called, "a horse protection bill," saying that the Congress needs to focus on "important" issues instead, especially in light of the November election coming soon.

Please, help me, if you can, and take a moment to try to get through to him. He has literally millions of listeners. I don't think he realizes what or how important the issue really is, or that he might be greatly contributing a negative slant to a just and immediate cause.

Thanks.

The Horse Slaughter Legislation is getting some buzz from Wolf Blitzer today...

I believe he sighted a poll that showed only 12percent of Americans are for the slaughter of horses...

Republican spokeswoman Torie Clark said on the Situation Room show that, while she loves horses..."they come back ....and the legislation they are dealing with is about horse slaughter...this is not what they should be focused on..."

This was in response to a question about accountability from our politicians...

As we all know, these matters have been scheduled for MONTHS ...IMHO...I don't think the legislators have been putting aside their accountability for this reason...

Thanks for your comments to those with words of support today. I had to take a break for awhile as it was definitely getting weird.

I'm certain almost all here have an appreciation for the beauty that's Everywhere.
