Barbaro Updates: 67

updates are now here.

Update 609: A report from Kennett Florist (timestamp: 6:36pm):

Afternoon Everyone,

All is quiet this afternoon. The town hall meeting that was scheduled for this morning that we were going to bring treats for was postponed. We did bring some treats for the staff and our beloved boy. I'm still a little gun shy around those darn green tops. The stitches come out today!! LOL
The carrots were heading right up to Barbaro.

Anyway, also wanted to let you know we're planning a trip to Elkton, MD next Tuesday, September 12. It's just an FYI. Thanks again for all your calls and emails!

WE BELIEVE!!

Martine posted in the comments a conversation she had with the Fog's owner (timestamp 9:10 pm):

I had a nice conversation yesterday with Lost in the Fog's owner, Harry Aleo. Mr. Aleo is a very sweet man who took time -- at a time when things are obviously quite hectic -- to talk about the Fog and what a fighter is! Mr. Aleo was gracious and touched by the interest of others in LITF. Great guy, great horse. Best wishes to both of them!

Anyone that reads the comments below today can be nothing but impressed with everyones efforts for tomorrow's vote. Amazing. Vigil tonight, 7pm, east coast time.

Update 608: Barbaro remains comfortable. This took a while today, but Peter did just call (3:10 pm). He had Barbaro out grazing for 15 - 20 minutes, no problems at all. It was the first time Peter had grazed him so that was good!

Update 607: Still no Barbaro update, but just got off the phone with Peter. He is going over to visit this afternoon. Michael asked him to take Bobby out to graze, so I plan to get an update later from Peter.

Update 606: Still no morning report for Barbaro. I spoke to Barclay Tagg to get updates on Showing Up and Funny Cide. Showing up shedrowed today, which is very typical the day after a work. They all remain pleased with him going into the Man o' War on saturday. Funny Cide did his first bit of exercise since the Woodward on saturday. He jogged a mile. He felt good, the rider was very happy with the way he was moving, so at this stage he does not appear to have suffered any ill effects from his Woodward race.

The Thoroughbred Times has this article on the vote for tomorrow: Close vote predicted on horse slaughter bill, excerpt:

"I think it's changing by the moment," said Charles Stenholm, who was the ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee for six years. "It's going to be a very close vote. There's no question about that."

Update 605: Saw Michael Matz going on to the woodchip track for my first set this morning. He let me know that for the next few days he'll have to provide me evening reports from his visit with Barbaro the night before as Dr. Richardson is away at a seminar for a few days. Michael's evening report from last night (tuesday) is that Bobby was comfortable and all remains well. He visited about 8pm.
For whatever reason, I forgot one of my gloves this morning...my left hand glove. This is the hand that holds on to everything (neck strap, mane, and reins). So this might be a problem! But we survived the first set intact. And now about to get on Chappy. I will endeavour to post a report on Barbaro later today as I am able.
updated wednesday 6:55am

Update 604: Kennett Florist's report of their NBC visit yesterday (timestamp 1:03pm):

So glad to be back today!! There was so much to catch up with that I never got a chance to post until late tonight. It was so nice to be back at NBC today. (Good grief, what will I do when Barbaro goes home?) We welcomed everyone back from their long weekend with pizza and salad for lunch. Everyone expressed their gratitude for your kindness. We brought up a big basket of carrots and pears for the big guy! I can imagine he was wondering where his usual daily delivery of green tops was... "OK, I get that they don't deliver on Sundays, but what's with this long weekend thing?" All kidding aside, when I asked about Barbaro, Iwas told that he had a really good weekend.

Alie went back up later with a special delivery for a special friend, some apples, carrots and treats for the blood donor horses, and some other treats for the two legged beasts. I got to make a trip to Fair Hill, with goodies for Michael Matz, Peter, Alex, Tim and Dr Anderson.

Again, thank you all for everything you do... the candles, prayers, tributes, poems, jokes, etc. It truly is nice to be HOME!

WE BELIEVE!!

Having bolted out of Fair Hill early yesterday (drenched) I am now excited to return!

Miraculous Miss is back in the entries, 11th race at Delaware Park on saturday. It has been a long road to get her back after the Acorn gate incident. I will be going over to Delaware Park, it is a great days racing altogether saturday.

Bluegrass Cat is adapting to his new life on a farm: Bluegrass Cat adapts to life off the track, relevant excerpt:

The son of Storm Cat (the Kentucky Derby runner-up and winner of $1.8 million) was happily bedded down in his new home, munching hay, when I paid a visit this past week.

He turned to the door and seemed happy to see people. No doubt the transition from Todd Pletcher's busy racing stable to being the only horse inside the barn during the day has taken some adjusting on Bluegrass Cat's part.

He'll get 30 days in the stall while healing begins on the non-displaced fracture of his right hind pastern. He will not need surgery.

After the stall rest will come 30 days of walking for exercise. For now, he's wearing a thick bandage wrapped around his leg to protect the fracture.

Finally one day to go for the anti horse-slaughter bill. We will have a vigil tonight, 7 pm (east coast time) for the passing of the bill. A list has been compiled of those not on board with the bill: List of Reps that are NOT for the bill. And we have this lovely poem: My Poem and Plea for HR503:

Help me find the words, Dear Lord, to reach the heart of man
That each will hear this message and will clearly understand.
To some, it may be humble prayer for those who can not pray
To others, a voice of wisdom that can end unspoken pain.

Each and every person bears a gift to stop this crime
All were born and living just to be here at this time.
It doesn't matter who you are or where you've stood before
An open heart is all you need to close this fateful door.

Time is of the essence lest another thousand fall
In excruciating slaughter, born of greed and hidden gall.
Captive bolt and bleeding while the others watch in fear
Sold for wealthy foreign appetites, when will Our Country hear?

America's companion who has carried her so far
Across the plains in covered wagons, homestead bound, to farm.
Express mail was a pony, through rain, through sleet, through snow
Throughout this nation's history are hoof prints leading home.

The cowboy's friend and livelyhood, his song beneath the stars
All the pretty horses prance through childhood dreams and hearts.
The bloodhorse is bred and trained to bear our triple crown
An artist gift is born where mare and foal are bedded down.

Please let these words and images move each of us to stand!
It is our duty and our right as stewards in this Land.
Call and write your congressmen on HR503
Let the USA shine proud again from sea to shining sea.

Good morning Bobby & everyone! I hope another good night was had by you, Bobby, as well as another great day ahead! Your candle as well as Fog's will be lit as always is every day!

What a heart-wrenching poem. Thanks for posting the list of reps not supporting this bill, Alex, I have made a very good note of those who will never have my support when they are seeking re-election.

Have a good day everyone, and I hope Bobby gets to see some sunshine to get outside today, enough with the rain!

Thank you Alex for all the great reading material. It'a always enjoyable to read the Kennett Florist report too. It's the next best thing to being there. Like you, they do such a great job of describing the scene.

Let's pray that Miraculous Miss is ready for the gate again.

Also - that the vote tomorrow finally closes these places forever.

re: the poem - just a line or two was enough to bring me to sobs.

Good morning Barbaro family!!!

'morning, Alex,
' morning, y'all

thanks for the update- it's great that he's doing well enough that Dr. R. feels comfortable leaving for a day or three at a time- while I miss the early updates right along with everyone else when a key member of Team Barbaro goes somewhere, it's an encouraging sign.

Posted by: Anna in Tx at September 6, 2006 11:19 AM

Patty in Dallas,
you mean Ortis is finally on board?
Way cool, if he is- he was very non-committal when I wrote!

Posted by: Anna in Tx at September 6, 2006 11:24 AM

Good morning barbaromaniacs! Alex, hang on tight this morning without your glove! I had to chuckle - I am ALWAYS forgetting the my most important accessories. Yesterday I got halfway to soccer practice without the ball. Ha. After work this morning I'm planning on faxing, emailing calling, etc. the congressmen from my state (MO) not on board with HR503. Happy to hear about Bobby's good night and Alex, thanks for letting us know that the updates will be in the evenings so we don't all start hyperventilating this morning!

Good morning, all!

Alex, thanks for the update. So glad for our Bobby, and hoping for a good, healing day for The Fog.

Hiya, Bobbey! Nice to know that Michael M. will be keeping watch while Dr. Dean R. is away at his conference. You must wonder where your surgeon has gone away to again. RE: horse Slaughterhouses in Texas

Two of the three slaughter houses in the US are in Texas. One is in Kaufman and is called Dallas Crown. The other is in Fort Worth and is called Beltex Corp. How dare they use use our city and state in their names? I am appauled and outraged.

If you live is Texas, please get involved in stopping the slaughter of our horses.

By the way, the third one is in Dekalb, Illinois, so you Illinoisans get going, too!!

Posted by: Patty in Dallas at September 6, 2006 11:49 AM

Good Moring Alex..hope you survived your absent glove. It's going to be a long wait 'til evening for the reports...but I understand.

Bobby ....good thoughts and prayers going your way..so many happy reports are progressing for you day by day ....hooray!!!!!

LITF shrink those tumors....I'm praying for you every night sweet guy!
#########
Watched Hannity and Colmes last night and am disappointed in his attitude and flippant remark which was very brief towards horse slaughter in US. He was one of my favorites. Perhaps he should be enlightened. I think I'll send him my opinion of this today!

Can anyone tell me what the prognosis is on Special? Haven't heard anything and wondered if she is getting better or worse?????

Have a great day Maniacs and patience for the reports at night. Love you all.

Reminder everyone to be polite on the telephone re urging the passage of H.R. 503. The excuse that the reps on the fence want to use is that we are a bunch of hysterical animal rights nuts. Let's not give them the chance to use that accusation.

Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

Well, my e-mail to Mr. Hannitty didn't get thru...he "didn't like" me. Oh well. That speaks volumes to me right there. Aside from making what I thought were civil remarks was an invite to come to this website and see the Barbaro Effect for himself. I pity him that he can't face the results of his words.

Bobby, am glad to hear you are having ACN and ACD. The sun is trying to come out here in Chester County...hopefully you should be able to graze today. Shine on you crazy diamond.

LITF, you are always in my prayers and meditations, my Long Time Sun.

Shelley, I bet you have tons of stories to tell us. Do tell...:)

Take care, everybody.

Barbaro, I think you are feeling frisky with all the cooler weather you have been having up north. It is still hot here, not in the 100's any more, but still hot, coller at night though. I hope you get to enjoy all the carrots and pears, peppermints and all your little heart desires. I know you are still bored, I hope they try to keep your active mind occupied,my big ole boy. I love you very much, and am thinking of you always.

I'll be calling my reps in PA today who are against HR 503 for sure - this all has to end - it's truly a disservice to every horse that has to go through this and frankly it's an abomination from a human and animal rights perspective. How anyone can do this to these wonderful animals is certainly beyond me.

Hi there Dora!

Nice to "see" you again!

No word on the bracelets, unfortunately. With all the incredibly important things going on for Mr & Mrs Jackson, this is not surprising.

You may be interested in knowing that the Jacksons have trademarked Barbaro's name (yeah for them!), so to use his name without express permission (which we would NEVER do) would result in legal action. Yikes!

So, sorry. Wish I had better news.

Good morning, Barbaro,and Everyone,

Just checking in for the update, and to remind EVERYONE that this is call day. Even if you can't commit time to making several calls, try to make even just one or two. Your single call could be the "seed" that takes root in the heart of someone who has the power of the vote.

Also, please pray, that God will bless our efforts on behalf of the voiceless innocents. THANK Him in advance for a just and merciful outcome. We, Barbaro, Lost in the Fog, and horses all over this land are in His hands.

Have a wonderful day.

I am deeply saddened that we cannot have these, but maybe later...It is extremely unfortunate, but I know we have to do what is proper and this is the way to go. I appreciate you responding to me so quickly. I am sooo glad to be back in the loop with you guys and to know how Barbaro is doing, you will never know how I was pulling my hair out when I could not get no info from anyone---UGH!!!!!!

Posted by: Dora J Crow at September 6, 2006 1:48 PM

Several people have written to me since yesterday (the first, a rather nasty note, which included some annoying attachments), and I have been asked by each to respond. I did so, each time, but each server refused my response. I then posted my response to the Chat Room, as the first person had suggested. I tend to *accept* what otherwise we might agree are social anomalies from internet types, since, as you might be able to tell from my letter, these breaches, though serious, in social behavior are among *the least* of what I -and my country, US, and its leadership- have had to deal with, for the last many years. This was in Thoroughbred Times;

Close vote predicted on horse slaughter bill

A former Congressman from Texas predicted a close vote on Thursday in the House of Representatives on H.R. 503, a bill that permanently would ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

"I think it's changing by the moment," said Charles Stenholm, who was the ranking Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee for six years. "It's going to be a very close vote. There's no question about that."

Stenholm and Matt Brockman, the executive vice-president of the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, spoke on a teleconference on Tuesday in opposition of the measure, which is sponsored by Representative John Sweeney (R-New York).

Earlier Tuesday, a rally to generate support was held on Capitol Hill.

"The American public is overwhelmingly opposed to the slaughter of horses for human consumption," Representative Ed Whitfield (R-Kentucky) said. "After years of enduring delays, Congress finally has the opportunity to stop the slaughter of horses. I urge my colleagues to support H.R. 503 and end this cruel and brutal practice once and for all."

The measure currently has 203 co-sponsors—15 short of the number needed to guarantee passage. Stenholm expects those numbers to fluctuate in the hours leading up to the vote on the bill, which amends the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, purchasing, selling, delivering, or receiving of horses to be slaughtered for human consumption.

"I learned a long time ago—in my 26 years in Congress—that I never announce my vote count particularly when we know we've had an uphill fight," Stenholm said. "I'm just going to say, based on our own count and the agricultural groups that are working this very, very hard now, we're making substantial progress and believe we will have the votes to defeat H.R. 503."

Stenholm represents the Horse Welfare Coalition, which opposes the legislation because of long-range concerns about forcing three plants to close that, according to the National Horse Protection Coalition website, slaughtered more than 90,000 horses last year. The plants are located in Fort Worth and Kaufman, Texas, and DeKalb, Illinois.

"It is unconscionable that for decades, we have supported a practice that the American public is overwhelmingly opposed to," Sweeney said. "This is an industry that exists only outside the borders of the United States, where horsemeat is consumed as a delicacy. The practice of horse slaughter is a contradiction to our culture, history, and economy. The time has come for it to end."

Sweeney's version of the bill was discharged from the House of Representative's Energy and Rules Committee in late July. A second version that included six amendments, ranging from having Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns assume responsibility for all unwanted horses to starting a pilot program that would ban horse slaughter in Kentucky and New York, was favored by the Agricultural Committee, which voted 37-3 not to support the bill.

The 13-member rules committee will decide what version of the bill will be sent to the House floor.

Stenholm said he feels "real good about our side of the vote—but we won't know until the votes are counted."

"Horse slaughter is un-American and completely unacceptable, especially since it is only happening as a means to satisfy the eccentricities of foreign gourmet diners," Representative Nick Rahall (D-West Virginia) said. "The legislation we are considering this week will ensure the decent and humane treatment of these creatures."—Jeff Apel

HSUS tote board showing just under 6000 calls. Not sure how accurate this is. If you haven't called, please check the Message board to see if your rep is going to support HR503 and make the call. My rep's office was very polite--and very non-commital.

Also, in searching for French newspapers to write re horse on the menu found info on countries using horses for meat on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse_meat.

Thought this was interesting--
A UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) 2003 investigation has revealed that salami and chorizo sometimes contain horse and donkey meat, without this ingredient being listed as legally required. Blechh. Wonder if any of this gets imported. No more Italian salami for me no matter where produced.

Some had asked for Hannity and Colmes email address, here it is (well, Mr. Hannity's email)

Hannity@foxnews.com

I sent him a lengthy email in regards to his remarks about horse slaughter, however, in the end, I relayed he could turn this around and help the situation by doing a media investigation in regards the inhumane horese slaughter being done and how thieves are making a profit out of this, etc.......if enough of us write, perhaps he would reconsider this avenue. It would be an excellent topic for FOX news to get involved in for investigative reporting...

As you can see my Chris Byers post, the vote is VERY close. Everyone of us can make a difference by calling today. Your call might just be the one that takes us over the top.

Remember, Congressman Whitfield told me yesterday that if it doesn't get passed this week, we probably won't have another chance!!

For those of you that think one person can't make a difference, YOU"RE WRONG. When it's this close, one person CAN make a difference.

Alex, thanks again for posting this information in the update. Today is really the last chance we have before the vote tomorrow.

Posted by: ShelleyA at September 6, 2006 2:10 PM

Guys, if you send a big email it probably wont go through, because they limit how much room one email can be. It is better to send a short email, or write him snail mail. Its not that he wont read it, his email box at the FoxNews email wont take it because it's too big!!!

Good Wednesday and keep up the good healing to Barbaro, Horse of Forever, and all of his equine friends...

To all working on HR 503 from Maid M: If possible, people are even more critical -- and sensitive to being criticised [read: therefore snippy and snarky] than they were yesterday.
So when calling, interacting, persuading, etc.,
heed Edie's 01.14 post:
"Reminder everyone to be polite on the telephone re urging the passage of H.R. 503. The excuse that the reps on the fence want to use is that we are a bunch of hysterical animal rights nuts. Let's not give them the chance to use that accusation."

Just got off the phone with my representative's assistant (Rep. Barrett of S.C.). I was happy to speak my peace regarding HR503. They were very gracious there and seemed to appreciate the call. Let's hope that it will help our horses!

Good morning Barbaro! I'm so glad you've had so many good days. Let's hope that nasty rain clears out of there so you can go outside today! I bet you don't know how many horses (due to your Barbaro Effect) you'll be saving!

RE: ANTI SLAUGHTER POEM

Whoever wrote this, it's lovely. Very eloquent. Thank you.

BARBARO MANIACS--has anyone else felt all keyed up and full of anticipation the past few days? Going to sleep thinking of getting this legislation passed, waking in the mornings doing a mental countdown for the vote? I know the voting will be close tomorrow, but as of the Library of Congress site (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:h.r.00503: ) that I found that has the bill listed, there were 203 co-sponsors. While it's not a guarantee that they will vote yes (although if they co-sponsored it you'd think they would), just wanted to pass the info along.
If we can swing enough to add to the 200, we could get it passed.

Had a question - I wanna call all the reps in PA that are not in my district who aren't supporting it (Weldon and Micozzie in my district are) but do they always ask for your address to make sure you are in their district when you call? Just curious. Could someone let me know? Thanks so much.

Lynn, we lost Kansas on Saturday. :( Erin told me after I knew something was wrong when she called me but she wouldn't tell me, but she eventually did. He was an older horse, however, showed no signs of illness or anything. Was totally out of the blue. The horse was loved by all of us, but had the strongest bond to Erin.

I told her I had posted on here about it and that everyone was praying and had us in their thoughts and she was so thankful to everyone. Trinity, as Erin tells me, is upset too, as she and Kansas were stablemates/ran together. Erin said she was going to give her some special attention and treats. I won't be able to get there for a few weeks so it was hard not to be there for Erin.

Hi Ryan,

It is a common practice for the aides to ask for the caller's address because it lets the rep know how many people are interested in a certain topic. Whenever I called to a rep other then my own, I would say so at the beginning of the call. One aide told me he will log the call as a non district caller but it would be logged.

I agree, it's nail biting time! 203 co sponsors when the House went on recess. Unless someone got to them, we should be able to count on 203 plus some cross overs as noted by Shelley on the discussion board.

Alex, thanks for the superb updates. I understand about waiting for Barbaro's update for the next few days.

Glad that Funny Cide is ok. I remember that if the track was off because of bad weather, they would scratch him, while the rain wasn't as severe as here in NY/NJ area, it didn't look like he liked the track.

I can't figure out why "Charlie" Rangel would be against the bill. Perhaps there are minorities working in the killing plants and he's concerned about their livelihoods? That's understandable, but shortsighted. It's not good for the soul to be working in such places. The people can find jobs - real jobs - that are productive, fulfilling and beneficial.

it's a real concern- each member's fees contribute to the AQHA organization itself, which, in turn, supports the slaughter.

When I called my representative I used the following wording. It is suggested from the following website https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2006_horses_cosponsorhouse6

"I am a constituent and I am calling to ask that my Representative please protect American horses from slaughter and support H.R. 503, the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I also urge you to oppose any amendments to H.R. 503. I am very concerned about American horses and I don't want them slaughtered."

The gentlemen that took the message was very polite. No anger on either side.

Hope this helps.

I just called Rangel's office in Washington. The woman I talked to said he is FOR HR 503, and against the slaughter of horses.

Posted by: J. Carson Black at September 6, 2006 3:55 PM

OK I've got the phone numbers for 15 Reps from California not on board.
Someone give me a script. I'm in my office and have to be discreet. Would email be just as effective?

Posted by: cathy potter at September 6, 2006 3:55 PM

I wouldnt be surprised that quarter horses do make up a lot of the horses slaughtered. They breed several hundred thousand every year. Dont know the exact # but its alot. The TB foal crop is about 37,000 a year, the Aqha is 5 times that. where do these horses go? there are a lot of irresponsible breeders out there. Passing this bill will help curtail that because these people wont have anywhere to dump them. I pointed that out to Todd Akin and invited him to attend a typical sale barn and see what it is all about. Probably wouldnt though, he'd get his shoes dirty! Jen

Posted by: Jen at September 6, 2006 3:56 PM

Perhaps that's one reason the Jockey Club breeds thoroughbreds the old-fashioned way? AQHA allows, and probably encourages, artificial insemination.

Posted by: J. Carson Black at September 6, 2006 3:58 PM

the Paint horse assoc. is on record for supporting slaughter. Jen - As is the Appaloosa horse club.

you guys have to remember that alot of these horses are coming from the backyard breeder. They want a cute foal and then when they grow up they cant handle them. They become unmanageable and nobody wants them. It is as bad as puppy mills. It is really bad in MO. Everyone wants to own a stallion and breed horses. It is a joke. Jen

Jake

Great news about Rangel. He must have changed his position since the HSUS list. One more for our side!!

What I'm really worried about are the ones that won't vote at all. That way they can't say they voted to slaughter horses. But they won't vote to ban it either. I hope he is voting.

J. Carson Balck... After seeing Rangel's name on the list, I called the office in Washington Again. Earlier someone just took my message politely but didn't and that was it.

I just don't understand how these organizations who are founded upon horses (without horses they wouldn't have an organization to begin with) and claim to love their horses can turn their backs on them like this. It's so hypocritical and an injustice to these animals. It's truly sad.

Guys, I was able to be in DC this past weekend but only took in part of the HSUS conference(part Sun and part Mon). One of the sessions I did attend was a panel, and the woman was from the Doris Day Foundation, and alot of talk of course around anti-horse slaughter. She told the group in the morning session on Monday that the American Vet Med. Association is not for the bill. She did not elaborate more if totally against it, but not coming out for the bill. When I do get a chance, or if anyone else may know the dynamics around it, I will research it. Since my time was so limited there, it struck me as odd and my thoughts went immediately to how Dr. R would feel about the whole thing.I had to leave at the end of that session, so did not have time to follow-up with her one-to-one.

The AQUA deserves to be disbanded. I still can't get over the testimony of their person at the earlier hearings. It was unbelievable. But slaughter does serve the interests of QH breeders because they simply don't have to worry about an overpopulation of overbred horses if the unwanted ones can be slaughtered. The answer is not slaughter; it is more responsible breeding and ownership of horses. But I don't know how you can convince the AQHA of that when their people see no difference whatsoever between horses and cattle, and when they're making money by overbreeding AND via slaughter. The AQHA should just merge with the dambed Cattlemen's Association and stop acting like they're an association for the benefit of horses.

ShelleyA,

In not voting, they are voting to keep it going - it's like they say, (and I can't remember the exact line) but in not making a decision, you are in fact making a decision to allow what's going on to continue.

If I have a choice to pay a bill and if I have the money but I don't pay it, it's worse than not having the money in the first place, if thats makes sense. Both ways, my bill is unpaid.

(I know I botched that but hope that made sense)

To apply it to this: Yes, they are not voting either way, but in not voting, they are really in fact saying that they aren't against it or are unwilling to stand up against it, and that's even worse than opposing it. In not voting, they are still saying 'no' to HR 503.

Laura in Key West and J. Carson Black:

New Mexico is truly a gorgeous state, with unimaginable beauty. I thank God each morning for what He has created as I drive through the Rio Grande Gorge and up into the mountains to get to work.

I did not refer to NM as a third world country. I said, "Old world attitude". I am involved in canine rescue here. One of the worst cases of abuse happened over a year ago. The sight brought grown men to tears. We COULD NOT get local law enforcement to act upon this. After the animal was dug out of the frozen ground, it was taken to a vet and immediately euthanized. Pictures of this abuse were sent to the Governor and State Attorney General. The "Word" came back immediately to the District Attorney in my county to prosecute the case immediately. We are still not over this event, and we never will be.

I rescue 10 - 12 dogs on the average every fall. I take them to the shelter and the most donation I can afford is $20 per dog. Over the years, I have kept 4 of the dogs and they live a happy comfortable life into old age.

It's not that I am a 'newcomer' and want to change things. I just can't cope with dependent animals suffering to the extent that they can and do suffer here.

you got that right. And in my very humble opinion, the road to departure from one's post is paved with rocks that have fallen from that elected official's head that are engraved "I don't care what you all think, I'm in in for the perks"

Where in the process do they forget their campaigning and all the charm and empathy they put out there to get them where they are?

Posted by: lynnette at September 6, 2006 4:19 PM

I believe that the AAEP was not supporting the bill because it had no provisions for unwanted horses. that seems to be the main hang up with the bill. somebody seems to think that the government will get stuck feeding these animals. Why would they feed hungry animals- they dont feed their hungry people? It shouldnt make a difference. Jen

Posted by: Jen at September 6, 2006 4:20 PM

I am stunned to learn that my Representative Ander Chrenshaw (Jacksonville, FL) is opposed to this measure.

I, perhaps like some of you, thought that there was no way my congressman would be against this bill.

I have written him and phoned again in order to try and persuade him to change his mind. I stressed the importance of the issue, and why he should reconsider.

I presented fact and figures as to why our country should not stand by and allow this practice to continue.

I also added, on a personal note, that my family
was close friends with his father. Yes, I confess, I played that card. But I did it by saying my parents would want him to reconsider his position.

Why is this all important. Because you should not take it for granted that someone you have supported (and perhaps even known personally) would never be against this legislation.

Take time to call and write...even if you learn they do not support our cause.

I guess life holds many surprises, but it doesn't have to be the final word!

perhaps spending a day..or an hour at a slaugtherhouse would convince the fence-sitters.

Posted by: Anna in Tx at September 6, 2006 4:34 PM

I have called some, faxed some, emailed some...don't know if I'm having any effect at all, of course.

I did write a very *un*emotional letter to email or fax, since TX congresscritters in general are so money-bound that they won't listen to anything else. I make five main points: first, that the horse slaughter industry depends on criminal activity (thievery) and functions like "chop shops" for cars, converting valued personal property into unidentifiable chunks. Second, that regulation of the industry has failed since theft continues to be an important source stream. Third, that feeding and management of horses as non-food animals means most horsemeat is contaminated with substances dangerous to consumers (antibiotics, hormones, anti-inflammatory and pain meds, pesticides.) If the consumers realize this, it will be a foreign relations nightmare ("Americans poisoning us with contaminated meat...") Fourth, that no human need is served by export of horsemeat--it isn't going to feed the starving, but the rich, and the countries purchasing it have horses aplenty if they want to eat horsemeat. If they're too squeamish to kill their own, tough noogies. (Well, no, I don't say "tough noogies" in the letter.) Fifth, that responsible horse owners and breeders have other ways to dispose of animals that have terminal illness or that they cannot support (overbreeders are incompetent businesspeople--why subsidize stupidity?)

In phone calls (but not letters, since I don't have access to the written proof--can't find the reference) I also mention that the Texas slaughter facility paid minimal income tax on its enormous profit.

But who knows what these people pay attention to, other than corporate entities that give them money for votes. I am SO not happy with the AQHA for opposing anti-slaughter legislation...but then it took them forever to admit they had a problem with HYPP (sorry...reining in long rant...) I wrote the AQHA about my opinion of their opposition to this bill months ago...no response. Like the rest of this bunch, they only want to hear what agrees with them, but if enough QH people withdraw from the organization for this reason and say why, maybe it change.

Posted by: Elizabeth at September 6, 2006 4:34 PM

Shelley A....you know, we kinda saw this coming yesterday when the party line seemed to be one of
"why are we bothering with this issue when we have more important things to do."

And, as I am sure you know better than all of us, politicians will look for this type of non-vote to really support a certain side of the issue.

But, as someone said, we have carrots and we know how to use them!

A fun way of saying we won't give up!

Posted by: Pamela at September 6, 2006 4:34 PM

yeap, Ryan, I can relate, too! Good thing for me is the report I'm working on is down to the photo editing, which I can do in my sleep..lol

Posted by: Anna in Tx at September 6, 2006 4:34 PM

I agree, Anna. Also, maybe these other horse associations should follow the Jockey Club's lead, and only do live breeding. (Of the horses, that is.)

Re: The last HR503 hearing we listened to live?

Does anyone have the transcript or know where it can be found? - Where they talked about the slaughter houses in Texas being Foreign owned and only paying $5 in taxes?

I am asking because if these people don't want to vote yes or no regarding the horses, Then they should vote yes or no as to whether they want a Foreign owned company making, (I think they said about 12 million US dollars) and taking it home to their Country, and only paying $5 dollars in taxes to the US Government.

Surely if they dont care about the horses, they would care about the Foreign companies getting rich off America and not paying taxes.

I think this a very useful approach to use with the people reluctant to vote either way.

One of the main speakers against HR 503 at the hearing in July was a woman veterinarian (who's name I don't remember)...and a major national veterinarian association has also come out against the bill...

Both endorsed the idea that without being able to resort to slaughterhouses to dispose of unwanted horses there will be higher incidences of abuse and neglect...however, that has not proven true in California where slaughter of horses is already outlawed...

Responsible breeding and ownership of horses is the answer to this argument...the cost of providing a humane end of life to a horse who you
have taken responsibility for is part of the cost of ownership or business, as the case may be...

Sorry to go on...

I have a list of all those in Pa who are opposed to it with their phone numbers in Washington - I'll post after lunch for those in PA - have to go now as its my lunch... you can go here: http://www.house.gov/ and in the first drop down select a rep's name from anywhere in the country, press "go" and it takes you to their website where you can get the number.

Here is a link to the House Agriculture Comittee website - it shows the 6 amendments they have to the bill, all of which are unreasonable. Not sure who is on the committee was trying to find it - but here's the link that shows you the amendments named after representatives: Salazar, King, Conaway, and Peterson

Ah, think I have it:

Subcommittee on Livestock and Horticulture
Robin Hayes, (R-NC) Chairman

Jurisdiction: Livestock; poultry; meat; seafood and seafood products; inspection, marketing, and promotion of such commodities; aquaculture; animal welfare; grazing; fruits and vegetables; marketing and promotion orders

Robin Hayes, NC
Chairman
Richard W. Pombo, CA
Tom Osborne, NE
Mike Pence, IN
Vice Chairman
Mike Rogers, AL
Steve King, IA
Randy Neugebauer, TX
John R. "Randy" Kuhl, Jr., NY
Virginia Foxx, NC
K. Micheal Conaway, TX
Jean Schmidt, OH
Mike Sodrel, IN
Ed Case, HI
Ranking Minority Member
David Scott, GA
Stephanie Herseth, SD
Jim Costa, CA
Dennis A. Cardoza, CA
John T. Salazar, CO
Leonard L. Boswell, IA
Rick Larsen, WA
Earl Pomeroy, ND
John Barrow, GA

Since all those that are on that committee have amendments named after them, I'm guessing this could be the committee that is working on it. Maybe we should focus some attention on them?

Website I found this is:

http://agriculture.house.gov/inside/legislation.html

Hope that helps...

See you all after lunch.

Ryan
