Barbaro Updates: 69

updates are now here.

Update 621: The discussion boards that we set up on 8/8/06 (a month ago) eclipsed 10,000 messages today. Amazing. Busiest day: yesterday (this site going down obviously helped that but..), 974 messages posted, 3429 visits (members and non members) and 181407 messages viewed.

Update 620: Racing around ... we have plenty of racing to follow tomorrow, unfortunately non of which is on network TV (or ESPN). Delaware Park has "owners day", which basically means the purses go up, they get a good card and offer some great food for those with the right tickets (this year I will get one)! The racing should be great. From Fair Hill we have Miraculous Miss making her long anticipated return, and she has been looking good in her recent works. Diabolical is also entered in the Kent for Steve Klesaris, he has done well since the Preakness. Michael Matz has plenty of runners (Peter will have a busy day), and I will have some great food! Tim has a couple of runners at Laurel, Randy's Bullet and Gator Nation, so I will have to keep an eye on those on the simulcast. I will also of course be following Showing Up's exploits at Belmont.

In europe there are two races of interest, the St Leger (third leg of their equivalent of the triple crown) and the Irish Champion Stakes. This is covered by the Daily Racing Form: Ouija Board-'Alexander' rematch, and below by our friend Sue McMullen:

plus we've got the Irish Champion Stakes this weekend. This, as you probably know, is ALWAYS one of the best races of the season. We've seen some magnificent battles over the years between the very best horses and this year's will be no exception. A mouth-watering clash between two of the best mares in the world, Ouija Board and Alexander Goldrun, and the young pretender Dylan Thomas, who is joint favourite with Ouija Board. If Dylan were to win, he would have to overturn the trend of this season and win a Group One against his elders.

Winner of the Irish Derby by an impressive three-and-a-half lengths, Dylan Thomas will be at the mercy of the two wonderful mares who fought out a thrilling finish to the Group One Vodafone Nassau Stakes at Goodwood in one of the best Flat races this season. On that occasion the globe-trotting Oujia Board prevailed by a short-head over Alexander Goldrun, both mares fighting to the line, and should she win again it will take her tally of Group Ones to a magnificent seven.

Update 619: Just spoke to Peter Brette following his and Eduardo's visit to Barbaro. Barbaro remains comfortable. Peter was pretty upbeat. They did not take him out to graze as Michael had done this this morning, straight after Fair Hill, and on his way to Keeneland (sales next week I think). Eduardo groomed Barbaro. Its a short report but a good visit for all.

Rachel at Kennett Florist left this comment (timestamp: 2:30 pm):

As a collective group your voices are strong and we applaud each and everyone of you for all you have done! Thank you Tim, Alex, Mr and Mrs Jackson and everyone who stood up and let their voice be heard!! We will continue to fight with you for the good of all horses!

All was quiet with NBC when Alie went up yesterday afternoon. The reports we get are the same as Alex. Barbaro continues to be doing well. We brought his majesty some green tops and pears and had a nice basket for the blood donor horses.

We are in the process of throwing together a birthday party/surprise for Mike Rea! His birthday is next Tuesday (September 12) and we're hoping to surprise the heck out of him! I've talked to his sister Nancy to make sure what gifts, treats, etc we get are things that he will enjoy. My brother and sister in law are both physical therapists so they're helping me with some ideas that would be things that would also be useful. This family and this man are amazing, and whatever we can do to help support Mike, we will do!

God Bless Barbaro and all that have come together because of him!

WE BELIEVE!!

Update 618: I just spoke to Steve Willard, Giacomo's exercise rider. Giacomo worked again today. It was the last day for them at Del Mar, and they are now shipping back to Santa Anita. Steve said Giacomo is doing well. He had a little light breeze to stretch his legs and keep the wind in him (5/8ths 1:04 I think). They are basically putting the miles into him, and he is keeping good muscle tone. His mental condition remains good and he is eating well. I am not sure yet whether they have his next race planned.

Update 617: I just spoke to Barclay Tagg to get an update on Showing Up. He jogged back to the gate today. He stood in the gate, and he also paddock schooled a little. Sounds like a nice quiet day before his big race tomorrow. Showing Up is the first of the three year old "big guns" to take on older horses, in the Man o' War. Good luck to Barclay and the Jacksons. Here is the Daily Racing Form's review of the race: Showing Up faces hotter competition, excerpt:

Having easily handled 3-year-olds in two turf stakes, Showing Up will face older horses for the first time in Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 Man o' War Stakes at Belmont Park. He will face Grade 1 winners Cacique, Relaxed Gesture, and Go Deputy in the Man o' War, run at 1 3/8 miles on the inner turf course.

I asked Barclay if Showing Up will train tomorrow before the race. , He said he would likely jog a little.

Peter is heading over to visit Barbaro early afternoon. He is taking Eduardo with him, so this will be Eduardo's first visit in quite a while. I'll get an update later from Peter. Eduardo was very grateful for the gift basket I forwarded to him, very grateful.

Update 616: As I noted in update 615, Michael Matz reported this morning all remained well for Barbaro yesterday. It is another gorgeous morning this morning at Fair Hill.

Sorry, the site crashed yesterday, coincidentally just as the congress vote was coming in, and now we know: House votes to ban horse slaughter for food. I am amazed at everyone's efforts, but there is still a road ahead to get things completed. Lots of discussion on this issue on the discussion boards.

Lost in the Fog underwent his forst Chemotherapy session: Lost in the Fog has his first chemotherapy treatment, an excerpt:

Lost in the Fog, the 2005 Eclipse sprint champion, had his first of six planned chemotherapy treatments at the University of California at Davis on Thursday.

and

Magdesian said that Lost in the Fog's blood work would be monitored closely between treatments as would his bone marrow. Lost in the Fog's chemotherapy sessions will be spaced three weeks apart.

Morning All

Glad to see Barbaro is doing well and the site back up!!!!

Posted by: Mary L Ohio at September 8, 2006 11:54 AM

Thank you Alex for the updates on Barbaro, LITF and the slaughter house legislation. I hope Foggy's chemo produces the desired effect.

I think the Barbaromaniacs can be very proud of the effort that was put forth to have HR 503 passed. Now, on to the Senate. One suggestion - is there a way that we can somehow thank all those who voted "Aye"? Maybe we can divide the list up or something?

Hooray, this wonderful site is back!!! Alex, we know there is a cost of running this site. you mentioned the advertisements would help defray the costs. If this isn't the case, could you please let us know?

So glad Barbaro had a comfortable evening and the weather is supposed to be beautiful

Lost in the Fog, we are sending only positive thoughts and love to you as you begin your chemotherapy treatments. We hope you endure them well and they yield excellent results!

More work to do regarding anti-horse slaughter efforts. On to the senate we go! So happy for our victory, which is a victory for all horses and all animals! Great, Great! Barbaro, you were instrumental in the passage of HR503!!!

Alex - thanks so much for the Barbaro update, glad the site is working again.

I noticed yesterday a couple of comment about Michael Matz going to Florida, is that just temporary or is he moving his stable??

(On to the Senate for HR 503, I've already called my senators)

Good Morning, Team Barbaro!

Welcome back...good to see the site here again. Alex, if we can contribute to help defray costs, let us know.

LITF, am with you. Prayers for your healing, my Long Time Sun.

Barbaro, what can I say? Dear one, your presence and your story have brought out something magical...The Barbaro Effect. We were able to save some horses yesterday, but the fight isn't over yet. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Our new mantra????

Onto the Senate!

Susan, Its for the winter. He will be back. I had a question on the forum about the updates when he leaves. I guess Dr R will call him in Florida, and Michael will call Alex in Maryland. Dang. Hahahaha

Beautiful morning in Oklahoma with the full moon still hanging around. Finally got some relief from all the heat and lack of rain.

Thanks for getting the site back online, Alex. Glad to hear that Bobby continues to heal and great news about the passage by the House of the Horse Slaughter Bill. Will be much tougher in the Senate, but this may be the right time. With an upcoming election, and a close race, votes are on the table. A chance to avoid other controversial issues such as immigration and the WAR!

We can make a difference. As my grandmother used to say: The proof is in the pudding!

Alex it kills me sitting in this office and hearing about the wonderful mornings in FH. I was getting in my Neon today and I said to myself, Damn, today would be a great day to play hookie and hike all day in FH. But being the great manager I am, I went into work. BUT, I will be in FH bright and early tomorrow for sure! Plan to do the orange blazed trail and then switch to the green blaze right after the covered bridge. Should do 11 miles or so. Can't wait.

Cheers

I am so proud of everyone on this site for helping with HR503. What really blows me away is that without Barbaro we wouldn't all be here together to help on issues like HR503. Barbaro brought us here and Barbaro has brought awareness all over the country. I have to think Barbaro was on the minds of several of the congressmen/women when voting yesterday.

Thanks Alex for getting the site back up so quickly.

Thank you God for the miracle of The Fog, and for his right and perfect healing. Guide, inspire and direct those responsible for his care, as Divine Order manifests in every situation concerning The Fog. Let each caregiver see him with love and compassion, and with thoughts only of The Fog's highest good, and belief in his healing. Divine Love fills every cell of his body with healing light, and all that does not serve him, is now dissolved and dissipated in a right and perfect way. God Bless The Fog, and all who love him.

Wow, I was in serious withdrawal yesterday with the site being down.

The passing of the House bill was awesome!

Dear Barbaro....makes my heart full of joy that you continue to thrive and are heading toward a greater legacy than what can be achieved on a race track.

Dear 'Fog....I pray the side effects of your chemo treatments are minimal and that they will be successful.

On the horse slaughter issue...attacking the regulatory end is certainly one effective way to go, but the other is to attack the market...the profit that drives horse theft derives from European and Japanese appetite for horsemeat.

Yet both these markets are picky about their food supply, concerned about contamination. It dawned on me that my internet-friends in Europe (who aren't horsemeat eaters, by the way) might not know that American horse meat shipped there includes meat from stolen animals, animals on various medications, etc. So I posted about this where they would read it.

Two of them have already said they're going to contact their EU representatives and tell them American horsemeat could well be contaminated with substances banned for livestock in the human food chain. If we can shut down the demand for horsemeat, that's just as effective, in my opinion. It would also remove the "floor" price for the incompetent and irresponsible breeders that the AQHA is protecting.

My Congresscritter (the one actually "representing" my district, not the only one I contacted) responded to my email with a smarmy email supporting the current practice on the grounds that outlawing slaughter for human consumption wouldn't really save horses--horses would still be euthanized (true, but irrelevant--nobody's going to steal a horse just to put it down), taxpayer money was being spent to care for thousands of feral horses in the West (true but irrelevant), and people who adopted feral horses were incompetent and neglected/abused those horses (mostly not true, and also irrelevant.) I wrote back immediately, pointing out the flaws in his logic and his failure to address the issue of horse theft for sale to slaughter, and also the potential foreign relations nightmare if the Europeans (for instance) found out we were selling them contaminated meat. Didn't hear back again, of course.

But his letter suggests that this is the official line of those who support horse slaughter for human consumption. Reducing the tax burden on the American people by selling off "surplus" wild horses will appeal to many. Because Americans don't eat horsemeat, only those who work with horses know or care what horses are given (as feed, as medicine) and thus what might be in the meat...and the USDA is careful not to tell the customers abroad. Non-horse-owning legislators wouldn't know unless someone told them (and you can bet the slaughter industry wouldn't tell them.) Those who don't own horses (or any livestock, for that matter) are rarely aware of the extent of livestock (including horse) theft...so it's easy for legislators to ignore that...and again, they may not know it.

But anyway--if any of you have friends in horse-eating countries, just pass along the word that American horses sent to slaughter include animals that have recently eaten, or been given as medication, substances supposedly banned from the human food chain. American beef is safer than American horsemeat. If the market for horsemeat collapses, so will the economic power of the horse slaughter industry.

Good Morning Alex and everyone,

ALEX, there are not enough words to describe the goodness of your heart and dedication in keeping us together. You deserve much more recognition, but most of all you have the hearts of thousands on this website.

Always happy to hear that Barbaro is doing well. Truly believe the picture of Barbaro weighed heavily on the minds of the Representatives and maybe some had good hearts like Rep. Sweeney and Whitfield, etc. The Jacksons are incredible people. We should nominate them for "TIME - PEOPLE OF THE YEAR!"

Questions about LITF.
Is he comfortable at UC Davis like Barbaro? The article didn't say it, but does anyone know how the treatment affected him? Hope treatments help him and that he remains peaceful without pain.

THANK YOU!

PS: Please let us know how we can contribute to your website. This is the only one I am comfortable with posting.

Hi
I try to come here every day to check on how Barbaro is doing and see what else is going on and really appreciate the thoughts and caring attitude of others who post here and of course those who are caring for all of the animals.
As for the slaughter business is there an address where we can write to protest that where it may do some good and not end up in the trash bin? I think that it is horrible to take an animal that has given so much of themselves and kill it for this reason.

Thanks, Alex for bringing the site back up, you are wonderful! Sorry we crashed it for you!

Thank you Lord, for HR503's passage!

I have already e-mailed my senators (Durbin, Obama). I had contaced Obama previously and he is on board. The HSUS site has a statement you can include in your message and stresses the importance of bringing it to vote quickly..

God bless Barbaro, keep him strong, make him healthy.

God bless Foggy, give him the stregnth he needs to endure the chemo, let it work!

What a wonderful day! Good news about Barbaro and good news for every other horse in America! I really liked the article you linked to Alex, especially the part at the end: "lobbyists for horsepackers said the bill would set a precedent for meddling in veal calf, hog and poultry barn and poultry slaughter operations." RIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good morning all,
Thank you Alex for being so diligent to get the site back up and running - you are a trooper and we appreciate all that you do.

Barbaro,
So glad to hear that you are still doing so well, comfortable, slow and steady. Enjoy your day today, get out and get some fresh grass fro yourself, soak up the sunshine and crisp, clean air. Keep that handsome chin of yours up and you eyes bright. You are such an inspiration to so many, just look at what was accomplished yesterday in your honor. You are always in my thoughts and prayers. BIG horsie hugs, kisses, ear scratches, nose rubs and MUCH LOVE!!!

LITF, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you start this new journey towards healing. You keep your handsome chin up as well and those beautiful eyes bright. Do just what your docs and nurses say - you have so many rooting for you on this - you are not alone. God Bless

Glad the site is back up. I have been unable to read posts this a.m., however, would like everyone to know that now that the bill has been passed, it has to go through the senate floor for signature! I would urge everyone to call their U.S. Senators and leave messages to please immediately pass this bill through. I called last night and left messages on their voice mail. If we don't light the fire, it could sit stagnant.....PLEASE CALL!!!

Alex & Tim..thanks so much for maintaining this site for all the "Maniacs". Bet in your wildest dreams you didn't expect what has evolved.

Barbaro Nation.....what an effort!!! Good things really can happen.

Yesterday, before the vote, I had to attend a meeting. (They actually expected me to work.) When I returned to my computer I was following the "play by play" of the vote when the site crashed. Long story short I remembered that I saved the link to the forum where I found out that we won. Then, quietly crying at my desk hoping no one notices.

Congrats to all. Be back when I get to the office.

(I know this may not be off topic but just in case)

Thank you to everyone for your calls, emails, letters, and prayers (most importantly) about HR503. Yesterday was a great victory for us but it's not over yet. We have to get to the Senators now. But our efforts surely did not go unnoticed! :) And they won't with the Senate either. :)

But I want to acknowledge Barbaro for being the unifying thread of all of us - without him fighting through all he is fighting through, a lot of us would not have known about this bill being presented to Congress. I am not usually political but I surely was the last few days. It just goes to show that when people (and animals) come together with a common goal, great things can happen.

I also want to thank the Jacksons, Alex for all the work he does for us on this site to keep it going, Dr R and all the staff at Penn who are taking such great care of Barbaro, and everyon else around him and also everyone here. It's just such a blessing to know all of you.

Good morning to everyone. Have a great day. (p.s. it's Friday ;) )

Congrats on the good work. Now, on to S1915 AND the carefully respectful persuasion of President Bush.

Continuing prayer, for the health and healing of BARBARO, and LOST IN THE FOG, and also for Shelley's ALIBI and BOXCAR.

Tim and Alex, once again, THANK YOU for this site...so exciting to have seen Alex on CHAT last night, ( I was a bit fingertip-tied ), but enjoyed the fine comradery and conversation.

BARBARO, our beloved champion, and inspiration: Enjoy your day and continue to be "good." I know it might be getting difficult for a young strappin' boy like you to remain cooped up, and a bit bored, especially when you are feeling better each day, but you are so smart...hang in there, Sweetie. Fitzpatrick Votes to Stop the Slaughter of America’s Horses
Votes for H.R. 503, the “American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act”

Fitzpatrick Voted to Prohibit the Slaughter of Horses

Washington, Sep 7 -

Today, Congressman Michael Fitzpatrick added his voice and his vote to legislation that would ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. The legislation, H.R. 503, the “American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act” passed the House by a vote of 263 to 146 (Roll Call: 433).

Today’s vote to end the slaughter of America’s horses is the most recent example of Fitzpatrick’s commitment to the humane treatment of animals and the conservation of our nation’s wildlife. In 2005, the Humane Society gave Congressman Fitzpatrick a 100% rating in their congressional scorecard. The average House rating was only a 45% out of 100%. For his efforts, the Humane Society honored Fitzpatrick with their Humane Advocate Award.

“Horses are a part of our nation’s natural landscape. Horses are inexorably linked to our history and our heritage,” Fitzpatrick said. “Over 100,000 horses were slaughtered last year in this country to supply the world with horsemeat to be consumed not as a dietary staple, but as a delicacy. Americans do not eat horsemeat and there is no reason why we should promote their slaughter. That is why I support this ban.”

An amendment to last year’s FY06 Agriculture Appropriations Bill that would have effectively ended horse slaughter in the U.S. passed the House 269-158 and the Senate 69-28. However, the ban was removed during conference between the two chambers. Fitzpatrick expressed his support for the horse slaughter ban during debate on last year’s amendment and continues his support today.

“The history of the humane movement was founded on fighting cruelty to horses,” said Anne Irwin, executive director of the Bucks County SPCA, and vice president of the Federated Humane Societies of Pennsylvania. “Here in Bucks County and across Pennsylvania, we have so many horse owners, horse clubs, and horse lovers. We are so grateful to Rep. Fitzpatrick for his leadership in promoting the humane treatment of our horses.”

H.R. 503 does not remove the rights of horse owners to do what they want with their horses. If a horse is sick, dangerous or old, owners can still have them humanely euthanized. Horses can continue to be kept by their owners, can be sold to a new home, or placed in one of the many horse sanctuaries located across the country. 540 rescue facilities and 34 Equine Sanctuaries operate across the United States and over 100 have opened their doors this year. These equine rescue organizations will take unwanted horses and find them good homes.

“This legislation does not affect animal industries that are integral to American business or our quality of life,” Fitzpatrick said. “Nor does it infringe on the rights of horse owners. It instead deals with the slaughter of horses; a practice that holds no value for American consumers. I am proud to have voted for this legislation.”

Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick is serving his first term as Representative of the 8th District of Pennsylvania, which includes Bucks County and portions of Montgomery County and Philadelphia.

Thanks Alex for getting this back up and all the good updates on Barbaro. I appreciate your efforts so very much. I have called both of GA's Senators' Offices....Chambliss and Isakson. Both will vote in support of S1915. I have asked that both become cosponsors of this bill to get it out of committee as soon as possible. I am excited that after soooo many years of hating the slaughter of horses, seeing the "meat" trucks at the sales, and cursing when a horse was lost to them, that MAYBE we can get this stopped. This is a wonderful cause. (Thanks M/M Jacksons) Y'all are doing wonderful work!! Thanks, too to everyone that has worked to help stop this.
We continue to pray for Barbaro, LITF, Mike, and send our best wishes to all from the Gates of Eden Farm.

CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY! Now, please....

Posted by: David at September 8, 2006 2:08 PM

Good Morning Team Barbaro,

These last 2 days have been exciting and I have to congratulate everyone here who stepped up, and made a difference on the passing of the bill to ban horse slaughter.

I've researched it, and Canada has a thriving horse slaughter industry, which will very likely increase now dramatically due to the ban in the US.

I want to pass along to our Canadian readers, the name and URL for the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition at http://www.defendhorsescanada.org/index.php

3 large plants exist - 1 in Alberta and 2 in Quebec. Canada slaughters an average of about 62,000 horses a year, of which about 25,000 come from the U.S., according to Agriculture Canada statistics. These are grim statistics.

As Canadians, it's our turn now to focus our efforts on how we can help change the legislation in Canada, and follow the US's lead.

Let's do what we can to keep the momentum going!

I just spoke to Chris Heyde from saplonline.

Right now there are 22 co-sponsors in the senate. We will need a vote of 51 to pass.

He is regrouping and coming up with a plan to move foreward and will be contacting me.

The best thing to do right now, is to "politely" contact your own senators and ask them if they will become a co-sponsor. That is the FIRST step.

Then we can move onto the second step as advised by sapl and HSUS.

I will start a thread for this on the forum, but just wanted to give you a heads up.

If everyone stays organized and on the same page, we can be more effective.

Posted by: Shelley Abrams at September 8, 2006 2:19 PM

Hi Shelley,

From what I understand, the good news is, there can no longer be horses transported from the US to Canada when HR503 (and it's senate counterpart) pass through the senate!

CARROTS CAPTURE CONGRESS

I a stunning show of Produce Power, the Carrot Posse and its followers help HR503 ride to victory....Armed with carrot sticks, they beat the opposition into submission.

One member of the opposition was heard to say,
"There was this eggplant, see....She jumped outta nowhere and kicked the poopie out of my amendments...It was horrible..."

Others added "We never saw it coming...It was produce pandemonium"

Meanwhile, horses all over the country are celebrating the victory....The most famous of all was Barbaro, who, while taking the victory in stride added," If those $#%*# guys think that they can make burgers outta my buddies...Well, they can #$$* #$%&* @#$#$@ and stick it

The 14 thank you calls were well received and the people answering the phones seemed very happy that they were being thanked. I really thanked Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick as he had the great article posted on his web site that I posted above here and I gave him TWR 's website!

The 4 that voted no I was very polite and just said that I was dissapointed and hoped that their view might change in the future.

We had one not voting but Congressman Mike Doyle was a co sponsor of the bill and attended Mayor Bob O'Connor's ( Pittsburgh ) Funeral yesterday.

So glad this site is back up! Alex, thanks again and still, for all your hard work that brings this info to us. And thanks again and still to Tim, for providing the site. It was such a comfort to be redirected to TWF for Alex's update posts in the interim. (Due to a cookie problem I have not yet solved, I can read at TWF but can't post there - so I am still stuck here.) I trust these topics are OK to post here without warning sign, as they are topics that are and have been covered in updates up top.

How 'bout that Congress!?!?! ON TO THE SENATE! Thanks to all those who facilitated the nagging (pun intentional) of the Reps.

Cathy, that's true - there's money at the bottom of this. I always thought the senate was more reasonable than the house, but they're also more entrenched, and better able to buck trends and popular opinion.

Does anybody have a timeline for when the sponsors of the bill will bring it up in the Senate? If it's before the election, we'll have some leverage if we're loud enough. If it's after, there may be a sea change. Who knows?

###### Bobbie B., I'm not bashing the president. I'm saying that he will probably sign the bill, but he could also issue a signing statement that would negate it. So I think there needs to be some pressure on the White House as well as the Senate. He is not for the bill at this juncture. And he makes lots of signing statements. That's simple math.

I am not a fast typer....so someone may post this info before I can. But, this is what I know when I talked with Sen. Chambliss' office this morning. S1915 is still in "committee". That means it won't be voted on as long as it is stuck there. In limbo so to speak. The thing that can help bring it to vote is to add cosponsors to the bill. Which means it has more supportors. The stickytrick to that is admendments, which politicians are famous for. Call your Senators. Ask those that aren't already cosponsors to become one. Ask them to pass a "clean" bill without the stipulations of admendments. I am simply amazed the House bill made it through the house the way it did. I have to believe THAT was durn near a miracle in and of itself.

That's why it's VERY important to get more senators to co-sponsor. Even if they tell you they will vote in favor, ask them to co-sponsor. The more support this bill has, the faster it will move.

And I agree, I do not believe that President Bush will veto especialy if it is STRONGLY supported by co-sponsors.

I don't know the answer to your other question. About how long it will take to close the places. I imagine as soon as the President signs it into law, it should take effect.
Hopefully, if we can get this passed in the senate, the killer buyers will start looking for other work and it will slow down until it stops completely!!

Just got this e-mail from my Rep. Arlen Specter

Dear Ms. Nichols

Thank you for contacting me to express your support that I share to protect America's horses.

You me be pleased to knoe that in the 109TH Congress (2005-2006). Iam diligently working to protect animals byspomsoring crucial animal protection legislation and supporting legislative measures on the Senate floor. The Humane Society of the U.S. rated my record at 100% on their scorecard for the 1st Seccion of the 109th congress.

I suppoeted the Ensign-Byrd Amendment to Fiscal Year 2006 Agriculture appropriations bill thatprohibits the use of appropriated funds to pay the salaries of expenses of personnel to inspect horses for slaughter. You will be pleased to know that the House and Senate Conference Committe met to resolve the differences between the two chambers' versions andand kept the language previously mentioned in the final conference report. The President signed the FY06 Agriculture appropriations legislation into law on November10, 2005. Also,Iam a co-sponsor of Senator John Ensign's legislation, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2005. You can be sure that I will continue to address these important issues.

Again, thank you for contacting me about horses in our great nation. Please continue to keep me informed of your views on this matter. If you need assistance, please feel free to contract me.

WASHINGTON - A ban on horse slaughter overwhelmingly passed the House yesterday despite determined opposition from some in agriculture and the Bush administration.

The House passed the legislation 263-146. The entire Kentucky delegation voted for the bill, which would stop all buying, selling, donating or moving of horses for the purpose of slaughter for human consumption.

The bill would not actually outlaw the killing and eating of horses.

Identical legislation has been introduced in the Senate by veterinarian John Ensign, R-Nev., and Mary Landrieu, D-La.

It's unclear whether there is enough time to pass the measure in the Senate before Congress adjourns at the end of the month, said Rep. Ed Whitfield, R-Hopkinsville, who led yesterday's debate on the House floor.

The bill's main sponsor, Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., called the vote "a great victory for principle."

"Americans do not eat our horses and it is unconscionable that for decades, we have been using federal taxpayer dollars to support a practice that the nation is overwhelmingly opposed to," Sweeney said.

More than 90,000 horses of all breeds were slaughtered last year in the U.S. by three foreign-owned plants, which shipped almost 40 million pounds of horse meat to tables in Belgium, France, Japan and other countries. Thousands more American horses are shipped to Canada and Mexico for slaughter.

Groups such as the American Cattlemen's Association and other slaughter supporters claim that a ban is the first step toward forced vegetarianism.

They also argue the ban will strip horse owners of personal property rights; impose high costs on poor horse owners; and subject unwanted horses to neglect, cruelty and starvation.

Supporters of the ban maintain that current practices are inhumane. They allege horses are shipped in double-decker trailers that don't allow them to stand up; stallions are not segregated from each other or mares and foals; and horses are often alive and conscious as they are butchered.

Whitfield said many slaughtered horses are stolen or bought by "killer buyers" without horse owners' knowledge.

"The nasty part of this business is that so many horses are being obtained illegally or through misrepresentation," he said.

Opposition to the ban was led by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., chairman of the powerful House Agriculture committee, which had blocked similar legislation for years even as Congress voted several times for language intended to stop slaughter. The language was either stripped out or circumvented behind closed doors.

"This is an emotionally charged issue," Goodlatte acknowledged yesterday. But, he argued, the ban will only cause more horses to suffer because their owners cannot get rid of them by sending them to slaughter.

The ban "will flood the already overburdened, unregulated ... horse rescue facilities" with 272,000 unwanted horses in the first six years, Goodlatte said.

He attempted unsuccessfully to amend the bill to block implementation until the Secretary of Agriculture had certified sufficient horse sanctuaries existed to care for all unwanted horses.

Whitfield said the bill will not create a horde of abandoned horses. He pointed out that the number of horses slaughtered has dropped from 300,000 to 90,000 in recent years without a corresponding increase in unwanted horses.

Many prominent Kentucky owners and breeders, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, and other horse interests support the ban. Texas oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens and his wife, Madeleine, paid for a national survey that showed a majority of Americans support the ban.

Opponents include the American Association of Equine Practitioners, headquartered in Lexington, the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association.

Agriculture Sec. Mike Johanns on Wednesday issued a letter recommending a vote against the ban. But ban supporters say the USDA, which regulates horse transport and slaughter, has failed to correct inhumane conditions.

"The Department of Agriculture really does not have the resources to police the issue," Whitfield said.

-------------------------------------

It bothers me the chairman of the ag committee for GWB is vehemently opposed to the Bill.

Hi Margie,
I hope your day is better today. Bill O'Reilly's e-mails are Oreilley@Foxnews.com and Bill@BillOreilly.com.

Thanks Renee. Yes. The day is better today. Thanks for asking.

Should we pick one famous person to email each day of the week?

allright , okay , I surrender , since I'm secretly mortified that you all might be right.

I just hope that ya'll are really joking and not displaying the venomous hate I've seen so much of lately in the media. I am an old lady so what do I know. But , if in the future , Pres. Bush is found to support this bill, or signs it without statements, etc., then I want to hear an oops sorry from you. I'm old enough to be your grandma so don't argue with me now.

### Deb G. , I pray for the military every day and have admiration and respect for you. I just don't want political arguments to aggravate Alex. What would we do if he took it away. God forbid. So I will be nice .

#### Cathy Potter - you don't have to apologize to me but thanks, your niceness brought me around to playing nice. I love you guys and mostly , Barbaro Jackson.
