    Barbaro Updates: 70

    updates are now here.

Update 628: It is Mike Rea's birthday on tuesday: Please Don't Forget Mike Rea's Birthday!

Update 627: Tim called back and Randy's Bullet appeared to be cooling out in good order.

Update 626: Just spoke to Tim. Randy's Bullet broke his maiden at Laurel, was produced with great timing to win the race. Tim is now on his way back to the receiving barn to see him. He believes all is well, and will call back in 30 minutes with an update. Gator Nation was put on the front end, and for a second start it was a tough thing to do, he ran a little green down the lane.

Miraculous Miss, how fantastic was it to see her return with a win. She spotted the field a few lengths but came with a sweeping run and it was just great to see. She looked great in the paddock, very cool and calm. Clearly no ill effects from her Acorn experience. I saw Steve Klesaris directly after the race and congratulated him, he was pretty excited. Lil, his wife and assistant, was walking her back after the race and she just looked completely elated. Very cool! As far as the rest of Delaware, both Graham Motion and Michael Matz had winners also, so a decent day for Fair Hill, Ramon Dominguez cleaned up!

Showing Up seemed to run well in the Man o' War, he looked like he was trying to bite another horse early in the race. He was a little keen down the backside and I think that may have been his undoing. Anyway, a good performance for a 3yo facing older horses on the turf for the first time. I imagine the turf was a little yielding. I'll call Barclay in the next day or so to see how he came out of the race. It seems Barclay had a nice winner earlier on the card.

I received the following e-mail from Sue McMullen reporting on the top European racing today:

A feast of racing today for racegoers at York and Leopardstown. First York, where the St Leger was relocated from Doncaster while the latter is closed for rebuilding. There's an old saying that the fastest horse wins the Guineas, the luckiest horse wins the Epsom Derby and the best horse wins the St Leger and Sixties Icon, under a confident ride by Frankie Dettori, underlined this piece of racing folklore. Described as the 'easiest Classic he's ever won' and his fourth St Leger, Frankie had little to fear from anything else in the race and when he asked the favourite to quicken, Sixties Icon proved he was the class horse of the race and cruised effortlessly to the front, never in danger of being headed. Trainer Jeremy Noseda, winning his first British Classic, couldn't be there to savour victory as he is currently at the Keeneland sales so anybody reading this from the sales who saw a mad Brit leaping up and down watching a monitor, it was probably him. Sixties Icon is described by his groom Sean as 'a show off, just like Frankie!' It was a refreshing change to see some credit go to his regular work rider, Mick Deniro (I'm sure Alex will appreciate this!) as the jockeys tend to get all the glory when so much of the daily work at home goes unmentioned.

Meanwhile at Leopardstown yet another thrilling finish to the Irish Champion Stakes, which never fails to light up the season. The toughest mares in training, Ouija Board and Alexander Goldrun were taken on by Dylan Thomas, winner of the Irish Derby. An imposing individual, representing Ballydoyle and ridden by Kieren Fallon, Dylan locked horns with Ouija in the home stretch and at one point Lord Derby's tough-as-teak mare headed the Aiden O'Brien colt. But Dylan lengthened his stride (memories of our Bobby here) and fought back. So it was not Ouija's day but she gave him a real fight, battling her heart out to the wire with the game Alexander Goldrun, who was forced to challenge wide, in third.

This seems to be a day for the old sayings and another one is 'don't get beaten by one you've past' so Jamie Spencer might well have an attack of 'if only' as it could be said that he went too soon and ruined Ouija's chances. But you can't take anything away from the winner, who had the services of one of the world's best pilots, and the gallant mare lost nothing in defeat. Lord Derby, or 'Teddy' as he is known to his friends, has enjoyed the most incredible rollercoaster ride over the last few years and he is desperately proud of Ouija Board and all she has accomplished around the world, as indicated by this comment to RTE sport. "She has run a brave race and it was no disgrace being beaten by an Irish Derby winner to whom she was giving 4lb. She's a truly loyal horse and always tries her best."

Following victory in what is regarded as a seriously prestigious race in the global racing calendar, Dylan Thomas will be aimed at the Breeders' Cup, in either the Turf or the Classic.

It was also good to see Kieren in the familiar dark blue colours of his employers and regardless of the accusations made against him, there are many in the UK who believe a man is innocent until proven guilty and were outraged that he was suspended from riding while awaiting trial.

Note: Kieren Fallon is currently suspended in England from riding, and will not be riding in the Breeders' Cup.

Update 625: Before I report on racing today I wanted to give you an update on Lost in the Fog I just received from the press office at Golden Gate Fields (Tom Ferrall):

Lost in the Fog was resting in his stall at Golden Gate Fields Saturday, two days after receiving his first chemotherapy treatment at UC Davis.

The champion sprinter of 2005 had the chemotherapy treatment Thursday and was able to return home to Golden Gate Fields Friday afternoon.

"I think it (the treatment) affected him a little bit, but he's eating and he's drinking," reported trainer Greg Gilchrist Saturday. "He seems a little tired, but that’s to be expected. I think he'll snap out of it."

Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog, who was diagnosed with three cancerous tumors last month, will have his next chemotherapy treatment "Sept. 27 or Sept. 28."

Gilchrist said he thanks everyone for the tremendous support that he, owner Harry J. Aleo and Lost in the Fog have received.

Lost in the Fog vigil, tonight, 7 pm, whereever you are, whatever you are doing, spare some thoughts for the Fog.

Update 624: Just spoke to Peter who was just finishing up his visit with Barbaro (noontime). He said Barbaro was well, again, Peter was pretty upbeat. He is now off to Delaware Park, as am I. I also caught up with Kim, Peter's wife. She let me know that Barbaro's baby brother has now been weaned. No new pictures yet, but we are hoping for some.
update saturday september 9, 12:20 pm

Update 623: I just spoke to Peter Brette. He is planning to visit Barbaro after morning work, and on his way to Delaware Park (where he will be busy saddling plenty of runners this afternoon). I will get an update from Peter after his visit, hopefully by early afternoon.

While there is still no confirmation on whether Better Talk Now will run in the Melbourne Cup, I think it is quite likely. A race has been recently named after the three time winner Makybe Diva: Craiglee Stakes renamed for three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva. Makybe Diva herself has been retired to the breeding shed. Here is part of an e-mail I received about her first mating from Susan Senior:

Well the "deed" has been done between the Diva and Gallileo. Bloodstock breeding experts call it a "match made in heaven".
Some trivia and good for a smile - The Diva had her favourite song (I'ts only the beginning) played during her mating and the Barn was decorated in her racing colours of red, white and blue!!! This is the absolute truth! One respected and revered trainer George Hanlon is quoted as saying quite seriously "Horses are only human".

    It made me smile!

It is sad to report Electrocutionist - suffered suspected heart attack. He had recently run second to Ouija Board who is running today, in his penultimate start.

Update 622: Lost in the Fog received his first chemotherapy treatment at 11:30 am, thursday. He is now back in his familiar barn at Golden Gate Fields. Here is a detialed report of the treatment from UC Davis: Lost in the Fog: Chemo Begins. It includes the following excerpts:

Lost In The Fog tolerated the treatment extremely well and remained comfortable throughout. He remained bright and alert overnight, maintained a normal temperature, and had an excellent appetite and attitude.

Lost In The Fog was released from the teaching hospital at 11:45 AM Friday, September 8, into the care of his trainer, Mr. Greg Gilchrist, and his veterinarian, Dr. Don Smith, who will monitor the horse closely at Golden Gate Fields. Dr. Smith will collect blood at regular intervals to monitor the effects of the first round of chemotherapy.

Subsequent chemotherapy treatments will be scheduled based on the results of these blood tests and on Lost In The Fog's progress.

    and

Lost In The Fog was a model patient while hospitalized at the VMTH and behaved very well. He will, no doubt, enjoy his return to the familiar environment and faces in Mr. Gilchrist's barn at Golden Gate Fields.

The dedicated veterinarians and staff who have provided Lost In The Fog with round-the-clock care during his visits to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital are rooting for him. We sincerely appreciate the messages of support and encouragement that have poured in from Lost In The Fog's many fans and admirers around the globe.

The article includes a nice headshot of the Fog and also provides an e-mail address you can use to send your wishes: fogfans@ucdavis.edu.

The Barbaro update will likely be delayed today, just an FYI, but a few people are away and we might not learn anything until this afternoon.

Can't sleep, so I thought I would check on my boy! Have a wonderful day Barbaro! I love you very much.

Alex, I am also wishing you a great weekend.

Found the info at UC-Davis about Fog very interesting. Love the photo.

Good morning all and thanks Alex for the update on The Fog.

Really terrific of UC-Davis to provide such a detailed report and to acknowledge that so many are pulling for him. They seem as empathetic they are skilled.

Prayers and hopes and dreams for Barbaro and The Fog.

    Barbaro:

Not to happy right now. Seems like I a couple of weeks back I picked up a nasty follower from this site. And then yesterday after busting my rear end to find snail mail addys for people for the committee members (membes on that committee working to ban horse slaughter) so people could snail mail members I got shot down.

Maybe it's best I just hang here where no one but Alex can have at my email addy. Cause Alex will honor my privacy. He's really been good about that.

Well you keep hanging there. I wrote Foggy about how well you're doing to try to help inspire him to hang in there just like you've been doing. It's been a joy watching you eventhough at times its been pretty scary. But I guess it was for you too.

I love ya big guy. Have a great day. Oh its bath day too! oooohhh I hope you have fun playing in all the suds. And feel free to shake all that sudsy water over everyone. You just let them know how good it feels.

Hope you get to go out and graze some more. I bet that was fun having Eduardo come visit yesterday. Hope you didn't nip him for taking so long getting to you. Horsie hugs are good. And just those quiet moments hanging together are good too.

Great big thanks to Alex. It is so nice to be able to read such interesting updates from all over.

Lots of horses racing today. Prayers for safe trips around the track.

If you click on the link above (Lost in the Fog: Chemo Begins) you will see a BEAUTIFUL PICTURE of Foggy taken just a few days ago....boy, he looks great! I pray that the chemo does its job without taking a huge toll on him...Foggy and his dedicated people really deserve a successful outcome!

Barbaro - are you sleeping in this morning? You were so busy yesterday...grazing with Michael, a visit from Peter, and Eduardo grooming you - the loving touch of your old buddy must have felt wonderful. You have a spectacular day...better get outside before the RAIN comes back, and of course it's splish-splash for you today, isn't it? I picture you wearing a thick terry robe (in Lael Farms colors, of course) after your bath - image makes me giggle!

For all the brave horses putting hooves to tracks today...may God keep them in the palm of his hand and bring them all safe home! Special thoughts for Miraculous Miss; since I saw her earlier gate accident, I just pray that she is at ease with the gate now.

BARBAROMANIACS RULE - we're a motley crew, but we make things happen...and all thanks to Barbaro, our Commander-in-Chief!

    Good Morning Barbaro

Have a wonderful day. Hope your weather is great so that you can go outside to graze. Get lots of scratches and treats after your bath, and I am sure lots of spoiling from all those around you. You are our hero and we love you so much. So many things are being accomplished in your name.

Foggy, so glad you are back home. We are all sending positive energy, prayers and good wishes your way. Thank you Mr Aleo and Mr Gilchrist for giving Foggy a chance.

I have already contacted my Senators from Ohio, Mr Dewine and Mr Voinovich, concerning the Anti Horse Slaughter Bill and have heard back from Mr Voinovich's office, waiting on Mr Dewine.

Thank you Mr and Mrs Jackson, Dr R and staff, Michael Matz, Peter, Tim and Alex for all you do on the behalf of horses, and a special thank you to the members of this site who have worked so hard on the Anti-Slaughter Bill.

    Good morning, Barbaro and all!

It's foggy here in Maine this morning - a tribute to the Fog and his brave fight, perhaps? I pray for his recovery.

And I'll be praying that all our runners come home safe and sound today. Wish there were regular tv coverage but at least I have the Internet.

Have fun splishin' and splashin' today, Barbaro!

Good Morning, Special One. Today is bath day and another day to graze and continue on the mend. Was glad to hear about your buddy, Foggy. He got his first treatment and was the model patient just like you. We hold him close in our hearts now too. We know you don't mind.

Lots of good work has been done here by your fans on the TRW site, Barbaro, and it's all in your name. I always knew you were here for a higher calling than winning races. That's why I call you Special One.

I'm sharing my letter with y'all because I included y'all in it. I did so presumptuously, no apologies.

    Hi,
My name is Anna, I live in Texas, and I want to say thank you for sharing Fog with us, the public. I did not get to see him race, but I was made aware of him first by some of the wonderful photographers at Final Turn Gallery and then of his story by Tim Woolley Racing, where I join many others for daily updates on Barbaro's progress.

It's funny that in this day and age, some people still seem to believe that if they let themselves care for another (especially a mere animal), that they will be heartbroken if things don't go perfectly well.
The way I see it, one's heart simply grows with each being one takes into his or her sphere of affections- and that's a wonderful thing! That can include heartbreak, but how would we know if we didn't love first?

I know that Fog has many happy days ahead. If they are spent on this Earth, we mere humans can enjoy them with him. If they continue elsewhere, he will enjoy them no less.
Know that he is in our prayers. I dare speak for those of us who came together initially because of Barbaro- Fog is part of our days now, too.
    regards,
    Anna

    Margaret,

    My sincerest apologies.

I was the first who said that I had read of a possible snail mail delay. Never meant to offend anyone I just know that time is of the essence in corresponding with the Senators. Never, ever meant to hurt anyone's feelings. Believe me I know how much effort you put in detailing this information. You have been working so hard on behalf of so many of us to offer much needed information and it would be to the detriment of this effort for you to remove yourself. Please don't. And please remember, this isn't about us it's about the horses.

Again.................I never meant to hurt you and I am so sorry that you were. You have much more to offer that I. I defer to you.

    Margret,
I read you message on the discussion board. You are passionate about helping get the anitslaughter bill passed and tried to give helpful information to everyone. Thank you for all your time to compile the address list. But please don't think you got shot down. Before the anthrax scare, mailing letters would be an excellent idea. It's just that now all letters are held up for a month to inspect them before going to the Senators' offices. You proably didn't know that. I'm sure you have other great ideas to help get this passed. We need your help, don't give up on us.

s'okay, Jake, I enjoyed reading it twice. LoL

I was thinking about the Anthrax/snail mail issue- what about sending oversized postcards? I mean, they're open- so they'd be a heckovalot easier to pass inspection (however they screen the mail)- the only downside I could see would be that others could read your notes.
That's not even really a downside, because it just *might* make someone who isn't aware already, aware.

This is such a hard year for horse-racing. Bobby's injury, Foggy's illness, St. Liam's death, and now Electrocutionist's heart attack. Thank God for Bobby, and I think Foggy is doing well, too.

I feel for Sheik Mohammed. It wasn't that long ago he lost his beloved Dubai Millenium---another World Cup winner who was truly remarkable.

The highs are so high, and the lows are in the depths.

Hey you guys, I am watching HRTV (probably yesterdays races) and finally got to see Woodbines new track in action. WOW it brought tears to my eyes to watch those horses run on that polytrack. They all looked so smooth and FAST. Plus I didnt even hold my breath once for fear of a breakdown.

I promise as soon as we push the the bill thru the senate, I am back to ramming the synthetic racing surface petition down everyones throat. LOL

GOOD MORNING BARBARO AND THE FOG I HEARD YOU BOTH HAD VERY GOOD NIGHTS. HOPE EVERYONE WILL HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND.

GLAD TO HEAR FOG TOLERATED THE CEMO TREATMENT REAL WELL AND REMAINED COMFORTABLE HOPE YOU BOTH HAVE GREAT WEEKENDS.

    LOVE KATHY

    Posted by: Kathy - 8yrs at September 9, 2006 1:11 PM

I sent an email to the Fog, too. And, I also mentioned the source of my initial info. For those who would like to see it:

Thank you so much for your latest detailed report on the Fog's treatment and condition.

I learned about this horse on the Tim Woolley Racing website, originally to receive updates on Barbaro's recovery. Like thousands of others, I now go there daily, not only for news about Bobby, but also updates on the Fog, and news of other horse related events. I have learned so much.

Bottom line, it's the people, and their relationship with their animals, that has been the most heartening. It is wonderful to know that there are folks in the world like the Jacksons and Mr. Aleo, like Michael Matz and Mr. Gilcrest, and on and on through the jockeys, the exercise riders, the grooms, and now the fans . . . who all want a comfortable life for their special equine friends (racing or not).

And then, of course, there is the medical community. Through the dedication of the fine doctors and veterinary nurses, at both UPenn NBC and at UCDavis, these friends have a chance to not only lead productive lives, but also inspire millions with their courage and will to live.

My hat's off to you all.

WE BELIEVE IN MIRACLES (and if you haven't seen one today, you "ain't payin' attention.")

    All Best,
    Ann C. Wright, Ph.D.

It's interesting that there has not been much news about Barbaro doings, but realize this is good in that this sweet horse's progress is consistent and ongoing. It was September, 2001. My son was packing to go away to the University of Chicago from our rural, small town in Ohio. Four days before our departure for Chicago was 9/11. I tried not to show my concern for my son's safety, but I was scared to death.
A day before we left, as I was driving down our 1/2 mile lane, I saw what I thought were millions of leaves cascading down from the woods along our lane. I stopped my vehicle to walk around and examine the leaves closer because the scene was breathtaking. As I walked around I realized that I was not seeing leaves but millions and millions of monarch butterflies that had stopped by our woods on their migration route. I stood there as the butterflies fluttered and danced about.
I then knew my son would be okay in Chicago and like the butterflies he needed to take flight.
I will neveer forget that moment.
We found out later that the monarch's migration route and been disturbed that year and they had altered their route.
    They have never been back....

Despite the highs and lows, this website continues to be a source of inspiration and positive energy. The untimely death of Steve Irwin, for whatever reason, hit me pretty hard. Such an icon of zest and enthusiasm and someone that knew 'his purpose' on this planet. Can only hope that his legacy of conservation will continue.

Take time to tour the Australia Zoo website that Steve created. An amazing example of how one man made a difference to MILLIONS!

Hoping that Foggy continues to beat the odds and Bobby's road to recovery is simply time passing for full healing.

Tell Jan I had a butterfly experience too about 15 years ago, my son and I were coming back home and we took a wrong turn and ended up in a gorgeous forest in Virginia, it was breathtaking with the flowers and butterflies, we knew we were lost, then all of the butterflies flew towards the left of us so we decided to drive that direction, a state trooper was parked on the side of the road looking for speeders. We stopped and talked to him and told him we were lost , he had us follow him to the express way we needed and got home. Unbelievable but true, it actually happened! I guess butterflies do bring good luck!

Thank you God for the miracle of The Fog, and for his right and perfect healing. Guide, inspire and direct those responsible for his care, as Divine Order manifests in every situation concerning The Fog. Let each of his caregivers see him with love and compassion, and with thoughts only of The Fog's highest good. Open each heart to believe in his complete healing.

Divine Love fills every cell of The Fog's body with healing light, and all that does not serve him, is now dissolved and dissipated in a right and perfect way. God Bless The Fog, and all who love him.

I am so sorry...was typing so fast...

The Flash Evaporator is responsible for cooling down the units (APUs) during lift-off. The APU supplies the electric source that powers the aero surfaces during launch and landing and are critical to providing electricity to the controls of the surfaces of the shuttle....
In this case, they seem to think that perhaps a piece of ice formed in one of the Evaporator's tubes causing a signal to alert them...HOWEVER...
the APU still was running fine (i.e. cool) so they decided it was no big deal. They then went to MECO (Main Engine Cut Off) which means they shut the engine down...ejected that big orange fuel tank...and are traveling thru space courtesy of earth's gravity and the pull of space....
Before they attempt landing, when their mission is complete, they can manuever the shuttle so that the Sun will melt any ice that may be in the
    Evaporator...

Barbaro is happy, by all accounts from all concerned. So glad he and Eduardo got together yesterday. Nothing like quality time with old friends. Will be patient for my daily dose of ACN/ACD - and thank you Alex for letting us know the official report will be delayed today.

Lots of racing - may Michael and Tim have success
with their trainees, and may all the horses and jockeys finish upright and in good condition. And I am especially rooting for Showing Up.

I couldn't be happier at how LTIF is reported to be doing. At the bottom of the LTIF UC Davis article, is a link to an earlier article re the initial diagnosis - what an incredible feat. Seems like he could not be in better hands. As fascinating as the current article is re treatment and prognosis, I was transfixed by this one re what happened from the start.

I want to thank UC Davis and all the staff there, and especially Mr. Aleo and Mr. Gilchrist, for sharing the medical information with the world. These people are on a par with Barbaro's people, IMO.

I meant to post the message above, but got carried away with the races and space shuttle.

Glad to hear Jo (UK) is doing well, was a little concerned.

Also, received Sen. Chambliss an e-mail stating he will support s. 1915.

I will spent time tomorrow writing Representative Sanford Bishop expressing my disappointment in him and not to count on my vote. Also, asking my friends to help me out by not voting for him for this very reason, if he doesn't care how defenseless horses meet their last days, he will not care about anything else unless it benefits him. The Preventation Act is not asking for any funds from the American people and this is how he voted!

Okay, I feel better. Getting my practice. Any suggestions for my letter, will be appreciated.

(posted in the middle of the night, 9/9 7:38 AM; re-posting so more will see)

    MIRACLE HORSE RESCUE

Sandie (9/8, 7:07 pm) - I missed whatever preceded your post to Faye, and I only address the MHR part. You said you would be happy to make a donation to Miracle Horse Rescue, and wanted to know how can you do this.

First - THANK YOU! SO MUCH! I am responding to you because I have a very special connection to MHR; I am an old lady (65 next January) with an unridable, crippled mare, and if Blackie outlasts me, MHR will be her forever home. Stephanie Pierce, founder and hands-on manager of MHR, will be her Mother.

Next - here's how to donate to MHR - if you click on my name below, at the bottom of the home page of my music website, there is a link direct to MHR and there you will find how to donate.

And have I got news for you! A donation to MHR will get you a Barbaro-with-his-nose-in-the-roses Tee-shirt! To get one of those tee-shirts that Ernie (corvinoballet.org - exact link at TWF, see Barbaro Tee-shirts) is offering, you must furnish proof of a donation to a horse welfare/rescue organization of your choice; and MHR is one of those directly linked at Ernie's site. So if you donate to MHR and get yourself a Barbaro tee-shirt, you will be "doing well by doing good."

And finally - please don't forget a way you can support MHR without even spending a dime. All it takes is a click. Stephanie, the founder and manager of MHR, is one of 5 finalists for Hero of the Year from her State (Nevada) in the Volvoforlifeawards.com competition; the substantial money prize if she wins, will totally be used to support the thirty-something horses who live at MHR. You can vote repeatedly, but have to sign out and back in to the volvo site again for each vote to be counted.

When I try to post links, my comment is usually held up, so I am not putting any URL's in this post, but will attempt to post them separately. In any event = the Miracle Horse Rescue link is at the bottom of the page that comes up when you click on my name below.

Though I directed these comments to Sandie, they are meant for all of you, of course, re how to help MHR. Check Faye's site for updates on General (blinded by an abusive owner with a 2x4) and other special needs TB's and other horses at MHR. What stories they have to tell!

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH.

This is the absolute truth! One respected and revered trainer George Hanlon is quoted as saying quite seriously "Horses are only human".

    It made me smile!>>

Beautiful! Congratulations to the Diva. That is such a lovable quote from Mr. Hanlon. Why can't all horses have people like this around them...?

Thanks so much for the news on LITF, and for letting us know about Electrocutionist. How very sad.

Thanks for the sweet story about Diva and Galilleo. I love the comment "Horses are only human". All of us who love them can certainly relate to that, can't we? Will be very anxious to hear if the union is "fruitful". Won't that be outstanding?

Hope everyone has a wonderful day today. I'm off to try to catch up on work and household duties after two very grueling days spent arbitrating a case ( work-related ) but will check back for news on our boy, the Irish races and everyone else

Mike C, I saw your comment about Frankel above. I lost respect for him a few years ago when he had Empire Maker. He was a little too arrogant for me. He made some unflattering comments about some other horses in the Derby, which his horse didn't win, then he was even more arrogant when he ran Empire in the Belmont. I want to apologize to any one who likes Frankel, I am responding to an earlier post and this is just my opinion. cindy a

We are LIVE at Keenland Racetrack just TWO days before the largest yealing sale in the world, and we are following trainer Michael Matz (hence the name) around to see what yearlings he may be interested in. As you may know, all horses selling Monday through Wednesday will be inspected by prospective buyers today and ONLY today. With most of the best yearlings selling these three days, we expect a LOT of drama here for the next several hours. So stay tuned for further coverage in the next Matz Report.

I love you this beautiful day Barbaro Jackson. I love all you people who worked on the congress so hard for the horse bill.

I told my senators aides that the bill is being called the Barbaro Bill (their senate bill 1916 or whatever ) They seemed to like it. Just hope they will vote for it. Lynda The Lucky Grape back at you for this edition of The Matz Report.

Early on in the inspection process we already have some HIGH DRAMA surrounding a pretty little filly by Storm Cat. She is HIP #4 and is consigned by Eaton Sales. Seven trainers are surrounding her including our very own Michael Matz. By looking at the faces of each trainer, you can see game faces, as each one will not let the other know how much they are interested in one particular yearling. In fact, they may walk off and shake their head like they are disappointed, but inside they may be screaming, "BUY THIS ONE!!!" As we watch Mr. Matz in action, we see him looking over the filly's hip and croup, as this may indicate either speed or stamina, or possibly both. Now he moves to the front and runs his hands down the filly's right front leg, feeling for correct formation and for possible abnormalities. Now he is picking up the filly's right foot and looking for a nice frog and good, clean, and deep sole. He asks the groom to walk her as he looks at her from the front AND back, looking for a correct way of going, or perhaps she is pidgeon toed? Splayed out? Hocks too close? Only Mr. Matz knows. He has apparently seen all he wants of this nice looking filly, walking away to go to the next yearling. There is no way of knowing what he is thinking, as he has his game face, and a Green Vintage Farm baseball cap pulled down so you can't see his eyes.

Until Next time, This has been Lynda the Lucky Grape, for The Matz Report.

This is Lynda the Lucky Grape back with another addition of The Matz Report.

After looking at the nice Storm Cat Filly in Barn #1, our Michael Matz took a walk to Barn Number 3, where another Storm Cat yearling was being taken out for a couple of trainers who were already there to inspect. This powerful looking young brown colt looks like he will turn some eyes. This HIP #20 is consigned by the Taylor Made Sales Agency. This time it looks like Mr Matz is going to let somebody else look this one over first. The trainer does basically the same thing that Mr Matz did with the little filly and then walks off to another horse. Mr Matz goes to the colt and rubs the baby on the head, and then feels underneath the yearling's throat latch. For possible breathing ability? He then feels the colt's two front legs, lifing each in turn to look at the feet. He then backs about four feet away and scrutinizes his back and hip. It looks like he is paying quite a bit of attention to the horses hindquarters, the machine of a racehorse. Ladies and gentlemen, I don't know if he likes what he sees, but he takes the Sales book out of his pocket and marks a page. This could be the one!!!! Who to buy for? We won't know until the colt goes through the ring, but rest assured, he has the bank account numbers for his owners, so he is loaded for bear!!!

Until next time, this is Lynda the Lucky Grape, for the Matz Report.

RESPONSE FROM SEN. BEN NELSON OF NEBRASKA TO MY SISTER RE SB 1915:

    "September 8,
    2006

    Mrs. Sherill ____
    Omaha, NE ____

    Dear Sherill __:

Thank you for contacting me regarding proposals to ban the
slaughter of horses for human consumption. I appreciated hearing
    your thoughts on this matter.

How to handle the tens of thousands of elderly and unwanted
horses is an emotionally charged issue. While horses are not raised
for consumption in the United States, processing is often seen as
the most viable method for the disposition of horses who are infirm
or no longer serviceable. However, I appreciate your concerns that
this is not a humane option, and America should not slaughter its
horses for the dinner plates of Europe and Asia. The Horse
Slaughter Prevention Act, S. 1915, has been introduced to
permanently prohibit the slaughter of horses for human
consumption. This legislation has been referred to the Senate
Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, of which I am
a member. I will keep your thoughts in mind as we proceed with
    our work in the Committee.

Thank you again for contacting me with your comments. The
legislative process will only work with the input of concerned
citizens, and I encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts
    and ideas.

    Sincerely,

    Ben Nelson
    U.S. Senator"

    BNN Breaking News
Sydney Bristow was alegedly spotted on the TWH site today using yet another "ALIAS", Pamela. Cunningly using humor as cover, Sydney was exposed whlie describing the fundamentals of rocket propulsion. In a rare interview, 007 called the use of carrot camouflage "simply brilliant". When asked about the Carrot Posse, Capt. Carrot replied, "what posse?" and "Sydney who?"

In a BNN exclusive, Rep. Bobcat Goodlatte was spotted by roving reporter, Miss Moneypenny, in a Virginia library this morning during taping of a campaign piece, er, during taping of a humanitarian effort, reading Black Beauty to a local Saturday morning childrens reading hour. After the reading, Bobo, slammed the book shut and was observed muttering repeatily , "I just don't get it, I just don't ....". --to which eight year old Katelyn King rolled her eyes and exclaimed "Hello?", before walking up to BG and calmly explaining "No need to be emotional mister. You see, Anna Sewell's 'Autobiography of a Horse' is .....".
Thank you Moneypenny and thank you Katelyn.

Finally, on a lighter note, once again from TWH, Laura in Key West was indentified as the source of a run on color ink jet cartridges and poster photo paper today after she posted a link to "Lifecycle of the Elite Racehorse". Churchhill Downs, Inc, HP, Cannon, Kodak, Office Depot, Best Buy, and Barbaro (major stockholder) all expressed thanks to Laura.

This is Lynda the Luckyn Grape back for the 3rd installment of The Matz Report.

We have followed Mr Matz to Barn #6, where he is asking a groom to take out HIP #27 and, oh my, a brilliant looking son of, who? You guessed it, Dynaformer. Now we all know what Mr Matz is thinking here. His mind is totally focused on this colt right now, but you KNOW deep down he is thinking about his precious Barbaro. Could this be one like him? What a pedigree!! His Momma is a Deputy Minister mare, so a great pedigree there. Mr Matz goes to the horse, looks him over, and then runs his hands down the horse's front legs, looking at the feet. He then straightens back up and runs a hand over the colt's back and hip, checking for balance on both sides. This horse looks like he has a lot of growing up to do, but so did Barbaro at this age. Mr Matz then goes behind the colt and asks the groom to move him forward, which he does. Again, we can't tell what he is thinking, but he has GOT to be thinking..."mabe.....?" Again, he has taken the catalogue out of his pocket and makes a mark. He thanks the groom and moves on to another barn, his stride purposeful, giving absolutely no impression how he is thinking one way or the other.

Until Next time, this is Lynda the Lucky Grape, for The Matz Report.

    Hello Maniacs!

Steve delivered a basket to NBC early this morning full of carrots, apples, pears & treats. The mood there was quite but relaxed. We're all really busy with the mushroom festival here today (there's a hundred thousand people outside, I'm told) but Dr. Sweeney and the head of nursing @NBC stopped by our booth and talked to Rachel and Alie. They said that he's a happy horse today! :)
Hope all is well with you guys.

    Cindy,
Yes, that right horses that have just been weaned are put in a pasture with other young horses usually. Someone may start to put a halter on them and lead them around gently, eventually walked through the ranch/barn so they can get used to different sights, sounds, smells, they get touched, groomed, feet cleaned. I think this period is really critical as the horse learns to let go of mama and bond with a human. So, hopefully the human is gentle yet assertive and patient.

This is the 4th and last installment of The Matz Report

As I have been following our Mr Matz around today, I have noticed the complete professionalism and stoic appearance each time he looks at a horse. Many trainers are this way as they refuse to give an edge to another fellow trainer. Each individual yearling is approached with silence and care. Each trainer marking in their sales books which ones they will bid on and, I am sure, wondering how much money they will be able to spend. How much will their favorite yearling go for? It could be a few hundred thousand, or a few million. Many a trainer will leave Monday's first sale day disappointed that they were not able to bid high enough to get that favorite yearling. Will our Michael Matz be able to pull one out? Lets hope and pray so. Well, so Long for the Matz Report for today, as I need to get some sleep.

So for today, so Long from the Matz Report.

The monarchs usually show up in my neck of the woods in the next couple of weeks, following the dune line and taking advantage of the updraft to conserve strength... their appearance also usually coincides with the migration of the king mackeral off shore.

We get the sulphur butterflies as well this time of year and they coincide with the arrival of speckled trout in the Pamlico sound. An old timer told me about this ten years ago and it's never failed to happen yet...

Sandie, yes as do I. I really hope that doesn't offend anyone, it really is just for fun, but it does describe I think quite well what alot of us here have been doing since back in late May.(ie) neglecting alot of things due to care and concerns over Barbaro. I just wanted to put a funny spin on it.

Yes plenty of things have been neglected, but many very important other things have not. That is why I refer to this summer as the Summer of Barbaro.

This was by no means even close to a regular summer for me, I am sure every single person here will agree, that this was no ordinary summer for them as well.

And re: the rules, for the guys out there, hope there is occasionally, no news--but that is probably viewed as good news. LOL. Now when is that pizza dude with my pizza?

These hamsters are put in to these plastic balls, then are put on tracks and "run" inside the balls.
Whichever hamster reaches the finish line first wins....all cheered on by their owners and "tempted" by treats held above the ball as it progresses down the track.

Four hamsters compete against each other, then there is a final "race" with the winners of each individual heat. (I picked up the terms quickly!). I had to stay for all of it, which lasted about a half hour.

Gus, Snowball, Pancake and Ratface squared off for the final race. Parents were nervous watching their kids prepare for the final race. Some kids were making fake "wagers". I was very caught up in this and doing my own handicapping.

I picked Snowball to win but Gus clearly ran away with it.

    I suddenly want a hamster. I'm a middle-aged woman and want a hamster.

SHANNON - loyal to the end (except when elderly father showed up) I stay at my post with my legs crossed...no break yet! Doesn't help that I'm chugging Diet Coke! Tried to atone for earlier absence by posting info on other Delaware races...even if we didn't have anyone there!

A horse was pulled up in a race at Golden Gate about 20 minutes ago....not a word yet...hope everything's ok...I knew a police horse named Henry - used to race not very successfully - one day came to a stop on the track as if to say "Out of here, on to a new job"...hope it's something non-threatening like that out at Golden Gate.

RUSSELL BAZE (Foggy's jockey) just won a race at Golden Gate - BRAVO!

    Dear Sweet Barbaro,

I am back from Kentucky and checking in on you. I see a lot of great news here on your site!

Dear Barbaro, even though I couldn't check on you on line, you were in my thoughts and prayers constantly as I made my way through a dream trip in the land of your birth. I met your Sire, saw where your Dam lives, saw where YOU foaled, and I had my picture taken with your statue at Churchill Downs, where your name was spoken over and over. All through my trip, when people spoke of you, it was in terms of WHEN you will stand at a horse farm, Sweet Boy, not "if". You can do it!! Keep healing, Handsome! One day I know I will make a trip to see you in person. Keep the faith, Barbaro! There are even more people out there that love you and wish you well than we realize!

Great news on Lost in the Fog! Feel the Barbaro Effect, LITF!! Heal well!

    Happy Weekend, Barbaro Nation!

    Love,
    Sue xoxoxo

Skylar - thank god I am not the only one who has witnessed this. My friends daughter entered her hammy in one at a pet store here about a year ago. He was fast out of the gate, set a nice pace but was forced to concede when he stumbled over a landmine (equivalent of cow patty for hamsters )that a competitor in front of him had dropped. Maybe I can talk her into entering him in another maiden allowance. I will even put the Lael silks on him in B's honor.

Here is a heartwarming story about a valient champions last race, he not only was assigned
the highest weight of 124 lbs to 117 lbs, for the rest of the field,he had three cancerous tumors, two the size of a football.

Lost in the Fog at Churchill Downs.
2006 Aristides Breeders' Cup Handicap Results
    Date: 06/03/2006

2005 champion sprinter Lost in the Fog visited Churchill Downs for the first time in his career, in the $150,000 Aristides Breeders' Cup Handicap (G3). Despite coming into the race off a two-race losing streak, he was the highweight in the race, carrying 124 pounds with the rest of the field carrying 117 or less, and he went off at odds of 1-2 in a field of six before an on-track crowd of 10,620.

Lost in the Fog was first out of the gate but 8-1 shot Exciting Metro took over the lead shortly after, getting the initial quarter in a brisk 22.09 while Lost in the Fog stalked him to his outside. Rounding the turn, Lost in the Fog passed Exciting Metro as the pacesetter faded from contention, getting the half in 45.07. 7-2 second choice Kelly's Landing, who was fourth down the backstretch, circled the field and was a length behind Lost in the Fog at the top of the stretch. However, under steady encouragement by regular rider Russell Baze, Lost in the Fog kept the late challenger at bay, prevailing by 1 1/4 lengths at the line in a time of 1:08.52 over the fast track. It was 3 1/4 lengths back from Kelly's Landing to 9-1 shot Level Playingfield in third. The win is his 10th in 13 career starts, of which nine wins were in stakes events.
Winning owner Harry Aleo said, "The 'Fog' is back and now we can continue his racing career. That was a turning point today. Lose that one and it's 'Bye bye, baby,' but the old 'Fog' was back today, and hopefully he'll get better. Now it's on to Florida. I'm looking forward to that Breeders' Cup. I'd give my right arm to win that one this year."
Winning trainer Greg Gilchrist said, "We came here because simply if you're going to have a stallion, and you're going to showcase him - this is the place you want to be. You don't want to be in Northern California. You saw him at the head of the stretch. He had every reason to get beat and he came away from it. I think every race that if he can stay sound, he will move forward off of it." Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog will start next in the Summit of Speed at Calder.
Jockey Russell Baze is mobbed by the media after the race. Baze said, "He's definitely the best sprinter I've ever been on. He's got such an economic way of running. When he switches leads in the turn, a lot of horses slow down, and he speeds up. It's just natural for him to speed up when he switches leads there. I didn't move on him or anything. I just let him run his race and he just bolted to the front, and then he relaxed and had his ears back looking for the next challenge. When (Kelly's Landing) came, I asked him to run and just laid the body down and went on off.

This Thursday the "Fog" under went his first of six chemotherapy treatments, and as reported by
this web site all went well, so include "Fog" in
    your prayers.

    An aside :

Sunday Silence (Shadai Stallion Station), Bago, War Emblem, Silver Charn, Roses in May, Mr Blowen, are all in JAPAN.

In light of recent research and interest in Horse Slaughter issues, and re-visiting Ferdinand, I am so uneasy about these horses and others being sent to stand at stud in Japan.

What's with it with the owners? Don't they know Japan's "track record" concerning most stallions who end up there?

My thoughts on Showing Up, Yes, Showing Up is younger but he's a great colt and very strong, we have seen him do his thing. To me it looked like Cornelio was holding him back before the last turn, his arms looked strained and Showing Up wanted to go.

Then ofcourse you have Ramazutti who I believe was Go Deputy's rabbit, and I think Ramazutti actually ended up tiring out Showing Up as a result, which is what they would of planned since Showing Up enjoys the challenge.

Just glad Edgar Prado didn't let Cacique take the bait! But, you have to give Go Deputy credit, he is the oldest of them at 6. I am not sure how I wished this race would of went.. accept that I was torn between Showing Up and Cacique for first place. But they were both in the top 3 and thats good enough for me.

Thanks to Nuggster for staying at her post and reporting on Delaware for us! I will see if BNN can afford a raise.

Congrats to Cacique-excellent move Edgar Prado!! I am so sorry Showing Up went 3rd, but at least it was our own Edgar that won 1st!! It was extremely nice to see the pretty blue w/white cross-srtipes running today on Showing Up.

Barbaro-we are all happy you are so good boy!! It has taken a long time to get you into the postion you are in right now. To think just a little while ago, you could not even go outside, and now--just look at ya!!! I am so proud of you Big Ole Boy!! I love you so much. Did ya see your old stablemate Showing Up run? Not as good as you old friend, not anywhere as good as you. I wrote Foggy today, I wished him to have the perserverence of your fortitude. I told him you would tell him to be strong, like you have been being. You are a very strong willed, and feisty Big Ole Boy-with your nipping everyone and such!! I think that ius what lept you tough thru your ordeal, I told this to Foggy, I bet you he snickered at that one.

I love all you guys on site, miss our chats, and discussions, late at nite-miss you Daphne & Pee, hope Pee is excellent health. I love you too Bobby, do not get so pushy, YOU, you know I love you more than I can stretch my arms wide... :) LOVE YA ALL !

Otherlyn...I suggest you talk to Deb G....she knows all about that...she even emailed some of the new owners for us in Japan (The ones she knows are dedicated to being good and gracious owners)...

I do remember making a joke about how some horses run like crazy because they are afraid they will wind up in JAPAN...Deb G said it was nice to know that people cared about the fates of our great American Race Horses...

    You should talk to her...

Posted by: Pamela at September 9, 2006 9:51 PM

David Letell--thank you for the post on Fog's spring race at Churchill, carrying 124 lbs.; and as we well know now, pounds of tumors. Moreover, given the function of the horse's spleen (Fog's is cancerous) during a race, even that much more impressive. He's a warrior of the highest order.

    To Marky :

The horses that they eat in Japan are bred for meat. The at stud TBs that are "used up" or no longer desirable as studs are "disposed of" which is the polite Japaneese term for "slaughtered for pet food.

This is a maiden claiming race, $10,000 purse.
He's back toward the tail of the field...moving up into fourth...2 off the lead...he's leading, he took off like a loaded gun! He won! "Whoa, he doesn't look great, he's pulling up shortly after the wire"

Nothing on the breakdown at Golden Gate...and I've got to run to the store
Sorry, all - maybe you'll all get dish network now...I guess I won't win any awards as a race-caller...I will now return to my more comfortable role as the one true Dr. R. impersonator in the posse!

Hello, Precious Barbaro:) Thanking our Father for giving you a good night and that He will continue to give you another comfortable day. Thank you Barbaro for being the "Miracle Horse" sent to us from our Heavenly Creator. He has opened avenues to help our horses thru you. I truly believe that. And we now have another "Miracle Horse" in Foggy. We have "Miracle Horses" in the East coast and West coast to help us to be the voices for your horse friends that need our help.

The Barbaro Effect and Foggy Fanatics will continue to move mountains for our "horsey" friends that cannot speak for themselves. They have made us aware of the terrible situations that their equine friends are facing everyday. They speak to us through their eyes......filling us with inspiration and knowledge to get the job done of saving our American Icons which are our precious horses.

Thank you Barbaro Team.......thank God I found this group of friends that I would have never met otherwise. I thank our Father everyday for blessing me with all of these Barbaromaniacs and Fog Fanatics (great name by the way). May God bless you and yours.

Hello everyone - Good Bobby and Foggy news!!!

I'm sssooooo glad to hear Miraculous Miss won today. Even more glad to know she's OK. After seeing her during her last outing, I was more than a little afraid. It was awful to watch - in fact I turned away. When I heard them say that they got her out and appeared to be unhurt, I couldn't believe it. Also - good news about Showing Up and Gator Nation. Is Randy's Bullet OK? Any news?

Just a couple random thoughts before I go ...

Barbaro is walking through the woods, dangerous woods , but the path is getting a little clearer. Our group is with him , following and helping when we can.

Some , Barbaromaniacs all , clear the way with the sharp edge of humor , slashing it through the air like swords.

Some, carrots and veggies , laugh and joke and dance behind Barbaro , lightening the load forr all.

More from the Barbaro Nation, march while praying and entreating the heavenly Father for Barbar's healing. Others use their gifts for strenghtening Barbaro and the group. Some write emails with brands of fire and waft them on the wind to the unlucky recipients. the letters and cards cut through the brush and help clear the way.
Barbaro makes his way , on two injured legs, refusing to limp, refusing to stop. And the Barbaro Nation , all of us , in our different warriors garb , follow.

Good night , Barbaro , I love you. Good night all.

Nice day for Fair Hill! Especially happy for Randy's Bullet and Miraculous Miss! And all things considered, a very good outing for Showing Up too, as well as a nice ride by Edgar on Cacique, and a fantastic day for European racing. Alex (and contributors), thanks for all the updates.

Glad to know that Barbaro just keeps marching along to his own healing drummer, slow but steady. And that Lost in the Fog has been a "model patient" - wouldn't expect anything less. Still praying that each continues to find the strength and spirit to beat the odds. They are winners in every true respect of the word.

Please keep in your heart those other horses who are not lucky enough to have owners and caregivers like "our" two colts. And let's keep taking whatever action we can to help those other horses too, in honor of these great champions.

Just wanted to let you all know that I'ma Wild One has suffered some injuries apparently inflicted by another horse while at her temporary home. She has been transported to her new home, has had medical attention and is being nursed back to health.

Goodnight, Sweet Bobby J. You gained ten pounds!!!! So happy to hear that! Sleep well, beautiful One.
Fog, as always, you are in our hearts and we are praying for you.

    ######
Our Champion Ferdinands demise was a combination of unfortunate circumstances..The Japanese do eat horsemeat and the majority of them do not have the utter respect we have for Kentucky Derby winners. His death was found out by someone doing a "where are they now" type piece. No one in Japan even thought to contact anyone here, and numerous people in the racing community said, Why didn't they contact us, we would have paid to bring him home. But it was too late.
Things are looking up. Stallions send overseas are now getting stipulations put into the contracts, that when their time at stud is done, they will be returned to the U.S. People like Nick and Kim Zito have made numerous trips to Turkey, Japan and other countries to monitor the welfare of our Champions.
Organizations like OldFriendsEquine.org are raising money, I have a share in the return of Alysheba from Turkey(and I believe his plane fare is paid for..I think he is sold out!!) Not sure though, but a worthwhile place to contribute to.
The Thoroughbred Club of Japan has just donated Criminal Type to Old Friends. So there is an awareness there now that just wasn't there when our beloved Ferdinand was sent to slaughter.
So, things ARE looking up. Old Friends has also just acquired Breeders Cup and Hall of Fame horse Precisionist!!!!
    Love to Family and Posse,

I would like to take this moment to THANK CJ, Faye Cohen and a very special donor who wishes to remain anonymous at this time, but is very much a part of the Barbaro family here. All of you have truly Helped Heal the Hearts of Horses in Need at Miracle Horse Rescue.

With the passing of H.R. 503, our efforts in rescuing horses in need are going to be much greater. We here at Miracle Horse Rescue are about to embark on one of biggest challenges (other than our daily challenges) On October 7th, one of my directors, Darla Halstead and myself will be leaving for Oregon. We are attending an Auction on Sunday in hopes of rescuing horses from certain demise. We do not know how many we can rescue due to limited funding as we are caring for 34 now at our facility. However, our special donor has added to the funding but again, we know that it is limited because of the individuals whom we will be bidding against and they seem to have unlimited funding..(GRrrrrrr!) The horses then will be taken to a very special place, friends that have a ranch in the Oregon area (and whom have adopted three horses from Miracle Horse Rescue)there they will receive shots, their Coggins testing etc., and give them time to rest. Once this is accomplished, then they will make the trek to Nevada, where we will meet up in Reno to make the swap and bring them HOME. I hope that we can bring home several and then locate reponsible, caring, FOREVER homes for them. If you are interested in participating in this effort please feel free to email me at rescue@miraclehorse.com

Once again, THANK YOU CJ, FAYE COHEN, and OUR SPECIAL DONOR. We have all come together in the efforts of the horses due to a very special horse, BARBARO!!!!!!!

God bless Alex, Tim and all his team who keeps everyone up to date on my care.
And please God, bless all the people who love and pray for me.
    Amen
Oh, I almost forgot, please God, bless my buddy Foggy. He's a real fighter, like me, but he could use some extra bright healing light, sent his way.
    Amen

It is inclusive and tolerant. It recognizes the strength of having a group of diverse people, all with different opinions, unite for a common goal. What a beautiful way to have the evening wind down. Your words illustrate that we are indeed the Barbaro Nation. Thank you.

Hiya, Bobbey! I hope that your splish/splash day was wonderful. B. & I attended my workplace's annual Summer picnic and I wore my Barbaro hat. People asked me all kinds of questions about you: "How's the horse doing? Is he better? Do you REALLY check on his condition twice a day? Why don't you put a sign outside your office every day to let us know how he's doing? That's the horse whose picture you have, isn't it?" They were amazed to hear about HR 503 this week and how wonderously well you are recovering. Yes, the sweet prince is a miracle horse! Hi Everyone:

So irate after reading an article in my local paper today regarding the horse slaughter bill, that I simply had to post. If you'd like to read the entire article, here is the link:
    http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pg=46&u_sid=2238973

And here is a small excerpt that just stunned me:

Horseman Jim Berry of Osceola, Neb., who raises and breaks horses, says slaughter is needed as an option for disposing of unwanted horses.

"I'm afraid if they shut down the slaughter plants, these horses will be turned loose, because people won't know what to do with them," he said.

The annual cost of feeding and maintaining a horse is estimated at more than $2,000.

As a rodeo cowboy, Berry was fond of Big John, his roping horse, which developed a painful arthritis-like condition. He said he made sure Big John was sold for slaughter, not to a new owner.

"The only way to rope on him was to have him drugged up," Berry said, "and I wasn't going to have that happen to him."

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?! What kind of sick, convoluted logic IS this!?! This man who was "fond" of a horse and could obviously afford travel and entry fees to rodeos to rope on Big John couldn't afford to have a vet put him down or the bullet to put through his head and then call a rendering truck!?! I am just blown away by this. . .

I took the liberty of looking up Mr. Berry's contact information, courtesy of whitepages.com, should anyone besides me feel compelled to let this "rodeo cowboy" who "raises and trains horses"--God forbid--know how you feel:

    James Berry
    13899 P Road
    Osceola, Nebraska 68651-4878
    (402)-747-2801

If he's stupid enough to go on record with his statement, then I'm more than happy to let the Barbaro Nation know about it.

Done with my rant now. . .thanks for indulging me.
Wouldn't have DREAMED of doing this before this site.

Dear God. "I made sure he was sold to slaughter...". Please tell me that's someone's sick idea of a joke.

I hope this guy has kids. I hope he's raised them up to be like him. I hope HE gets a debilitating disease and they make sure he's "sold to slaughter."

I'm sure his horse was so grateful, during the last 24-72 hours of agony and unimaginable terror on this earth.

Just checking in after a busy day. Glad to hear Barbaro is doing well, but did DR R. say B will be at NBC for 6-12 more months?? A knew it could be 4-5 more, but not another year? Makes me wonder how well that left foot is healing. I feel sorry for him. I am glad he is so loved there.

Also, my heart sunk a lttle hearing Fog is tired. I hope he is better tommorrow.

Congrats to all the winners today.

Hang in there Fog. You can do it! We're all behind you for this miracle. Just don't give up. I hope you enjoyed & felt encouragement from the cards we sent you.

WHY DONT THEY TREAT THE FOG WITH RADIATION THAT IS THE TREATMENT TO SHRINK THE TUMORS???????tHEY GIVE THAT FIRST-THE CHEMO KILLS ALL THE CELLS AND IS VERY BAD-SEEMS THAT THEY ARE DOING THIS BACKWARDS-I AM NEW HERE BUT CARE ABOUT THE FOG-bARBARO YOU ARE THE VEST-EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE NOT TREATING YOU RIGHT YOU GO BARBARO-YOU DESERVE TO LIVE AND HAVE A HAPPY LIFE AND I PRAY FOR YOU EVERYDAY@@@@yOU ARE MY HERO!TOO BAD PEOPLE CANT BE MORE LIKE ANIMALS-THE WORLD WOULD BE A FAR BETTER PLACE!

Posted by: maralynn at September 10, 2006 3:12 AM

Radiation does NOT SHRINK TUMERS. Chemo does

I should know, I had chemo. and radiation too

Posted by: Mary L Ohio at September 10, 2006 3:18 AM

Radiation kills cells (supposedly) but you have chemo to reduce tumers.. not vice versa, and Radiation to a horse would probably be not a good thing.. they are a lot different than humans.

MARY - I saw the interview with Dr. R on HRTV when I was "covering" today's races for all those who don't get that channel. Yes, he definitely said he would be there for 6 months to a year more...it takes a very long time for the hoof to grow. He also said that "Barbaro is STILL a champion to him" and "he has 2 injured hinds and he still walks better than most horses." And used the word "THRILLED" about the big guy's condition - all in all, a very uplifting interview!

    Shelley A,

I am so sorry to read about Ima. You mentioned to me last week that unexpected things can happen at any time with these horses, and our personal experiences seem to just continue confirming your comment. Ima certainly didn't deserve this after she made the decision that she didn't want to race... You and she have all our prayers tonight for her rapid physical and emotional recovery and her overdue happiness. After all you have done for horses, that is the very least we could ask for you and yours. Hang in there...

Thanks Jan, yes i am proud of her. She still has a way to go (Vets are like human doctors in amount of school and interning!!) she has doubled up on some things to get through school a bit earlier. She is weighing 2 optons, Surgery or Private pratice (like the dog/cat vets). She has been working with Large Animals this last year (horses, cows, etc) and really feel in love with doing that, but she also likes the smaller animals too

she was approached with a $$$ offer to go to a research place in Columbus. She spend one day job shadowing and called me and said Mom, I can not do that, no matter what the money is.. Said she would end up sneaking all the animals out and home!! Some can do that work, and others can not. I really think she is going to stick with the surgery part of it, as all her internships this next year is with surgical hospitals in columbus or at the OSU Farm. I told her she could be a female Dr R!! ha ha

    Nancy,

Thanks for the info. I am very willing to wait and let his hoof grow. I just get so worried about him sometimes. I love that he gained 10lbs in 1 week. I had sent him a basket on Thursday so hopefully that helped.

To whoever posted the hubby rules....that describes my life this entire summer! I am normally a very serious, professional person, but now my life is so filled with Barbaro. Actually, that makes it pretty wonderful.

Good night sweet Barbaro! Hope you had a good day. You're such a good boy and you absolutely melt my heart. You settle down now for a good night's rest too. I can just see you all comfy-cozy in your fresh straw...ah, what a picture. Wish I was there with you. I'd love to watch over you as you sleep. Night-night honey. Good morning, Bobby...it's been a while since I've been able to say that to you! I promise to try to do better, but know that even when I'm not here I'm thinking of you and lighting my candle every day.

Foggy...keep fighting, brave one. The above applies to you too. You and Barbaro are connected in this battle to survive, and you're both educating people along the way. You're both very special boys!

David...thanks for sending that lovely email from all of us here.

I'm so sad to hear about Electrocutionist. How does a 5 year old die of a heart attack? It raises even more questions.

Shelley...I'm so shocked to hear about I'm a Wild One! And did I hear that Alibi and Boxcar are sick too? (sorry, I'm stll catching up on posts from Thursday) Seems I'd better get some extra candles today when I go to Scarborough. You'll all in my thoughts.

Dawn...this James 'SICKO'Berry has left me speechless!! How do you do something like that to a horse that you've had such a bond with and were supposed to be fond of?? And admit it!! Does he realise what he condemned this horse to and what the last hours of life were like? I think he's just dug his own grave...hopefully!

On a positive note, it sounds like an exciting night's racing, and even though I couldn't watch it felt like I was right there! I hope everyone came home safe and sound and are happy horses this morning.
