    Barbaro Updates: 71

    updates are now here.

Update 634: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (sunday night). This update came from Dr. Dean Richardson (who is now back from his seminar), via Michael Matz (Keeneland) to Peter Brette, this morning. Peter is planning to visit later today so will try to catch up with Peter again later.

Miraculous Miss seems to be in good shape after her great effort on saturday. I asked Lil (Klesaris) how she was this morning and she said she was doing well.

Update 633: Today's update on Barbaro will again be delayed, I don't anticipate hearing anything until at least lunchtime, since Michael is away at the Keeneland sales.

The Thoroughbred Times has a short article on Miraculous Miss' win on saturday: Miraculous Miss earns third straight graded stakes win in Endine which oddly does not mention why she had not run since her last win in April.

Bernardini worked for the first time since his facile Travers win: Bernardini Breezes in First Work Since Travers and it appears he is in very good order:

"He went great," said Tom Albertrani, who trains Bernardini for Darley Stable. "Honestly, this work was as good as ever.

"He came out of the Travers in great condition and, considering today was his first work since the race, he couldn't be doing any better."

Update 632: A nice interview by the Bloodhorse with Gretchen Jackson (today at Keeneland): Gretchen Jackson: It's Still Day to Day, But Barbaro 'Starting to Blossom', it includes the following two quotes:

"You're naturally guarded. But for a not medically-educated person such as me, in the last month since his crisis with laminitis, he seems to have gone so much in the right direction. He seems to use all four legs better to equal his weight, to spread his weight amongst four legs, to stand more. And he has never ceased from eating up a storm. Arms and legs included. He would like to grab your arm or leg or hand. He just is doing it all remarkably well. He's just phenomenal.

    and

"Yes, it's day to day. I never have asked Dean (Richardson) when is he going to get out of here. I have never asked him. Maybe Dean doesn't either. It (Barbaro's recovery) doesn't seem to have gone back. We haven't had a crisis since the laminitis. His coat is shiny. He lost a lot of his tail. Did you know that? (It's from) balancing him coming out from operations; I don't know if its hands on him or what. But he lost a lot of his tail. But that's all coming back. Everything is just starting to blossom, and you want to see light at the end of the tunnel. We haven't had Dean say there is light is at the end of the tunnel."

Update 631: Peter visited Barbaro about lunchtime today and all remains well. He received a massage this morning too (Barbaro, not Peter!).
Sue McMullen sent me this e-mail reviewing racing in France today:

The three trials for the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe were held at Longchamp today. The Prix Foy was won by Shirocco, ridden by Christophe Soumillon, who beat his stable mate Hurricane Run, ridden by Kieren Fallon. But you can't read too much into this as it was run at a pedestrian pace with the Arc contenders aware that the race is only a few weeks away. Fallon said Hurricane Run doesn't like small fields and tends to raise his game when the stakes are high, as we saw in the King George at Ascot. Shirocco is unbeaten this year and goes for the Arc then the Breeders Cup again, but this time he might go for the Classic. I wouldn't necessarily read too much into the form of this race as none of the Arc principals were going to be asked to do too much. It gave the two main Arc contenders, first and second in the betting, a nice workout.

The Prix Niel was won by another Andre Fabre trained horse, Rail Link, with Soumillon notching another victory, who beat Youmzain in a strong drive to the line.

The Prix Vermeille, for fillies and mares, was won by Mandesha, piloted by, guess who, Christophe Soumillon, who is owned by the Aga Khan's daughter Princess Zahra. Mandesha looked very impressive and she may be supplemented for the Arc, when her connections, including trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre have an opportunity to examine the timings.

Andre Fabre trains three of the first four in the betting for the Arc, Hurricane Run, then Shirocco, and third favourite Deep Impact, Japan's top horse, with Rail Link in fourth.

As usual, it will be some race.

The sportinglife adds a report: SHIROCCO CLAIMS HURRICANE SCALP. The Arc de Triomphe is the principal race for older horses in europe in the fall.

Update 630: Wendy offers a nice report on her visit with Lost in the Fog yesterday (saturday), its on the discussion boards: My Visit with Fog. It includes the following excerpt:

I walked back to Greg's barn and met him in his office. I introduced myself and we chatted for a short while. I had printed off the posts from yesterday morning so he could get an understanding of the website and what people have been posting. He pointed to the wall behind me and said, "Look! This is what I have received just today! There's so much that I have been sharing it with others." Then he said, "C'mon, let's go see the guy."

Update 629: Peter is planning to visit Barbaro around lunchtime today, after morning work in the barn, so I will catch up with him and get a report later (early afternoon I hope). You have made the paper: Barbaro's superfans. This is the article Kennett Florist refered to a couple of days ago in the local paper, I guess it has now only just gone online.

It is a georgeous morning again at Fair Hill. I did not have anything to ride but went to Tim's to see how Randy's Bullet and Gator Nation came out of their respective races yesterday at Laurel. They arrived back in the barn about 9:30 pm last night. Both looked well this morning. I saw Randy's Bullet shedrowing and then being led out for a pick of grass. He looked fine. Tim is now heading up to Monmouth to run Red Aspen in the sixth race.

Really neat article on the maniacs - I received an acknowledgement from NBC for my donation in honor of Dr. R - it is a great picture of Barbaro racing in the derby....I just wish the post office hadn't ruined it - evidently it got wet and some of the picture is distorted and some of it even gone from the paper...I'll keep it anyway - this is a special time :o)

    Go Barbaro!

It is wonderful to find out news on Barbaro here. I can't believe he has gained 10 pounds. That is great news. It is a beautiful day here; I hope he can enjoy it.

The article about Fog's last race posted yesterday was wonderful.

I am so pleased to be able to read that others share my concerns about horses. I too was upset when I read Silver Charm was in Japan. He was one of my favorites. So beautiful.

I was glad to read about all the good news yesterday, and very sorry to hear about I'ma.

It is good to know there are so many good people in horse racing. This site is an incredibly valuable resource.

Rest from the chemo LITF. You are back home again with those who love you.

May all the horses come home from tracks safely today.

Good Morning Big Ole Bay Boy!!!! I hope you are feeling just peachy this morning and get to go outside and graze away. I sure hope that you maybe get to go out at least a couple of times a week, I do not know your schedule, but would hope so anyway. It would make you happier I know, to see the trees and other skyward things. You can get antsy inside without windows for so long---UGH!! I was only in Hospital for 5 days and I HAD a window,Looking at a poor pitiful patch of dead grass and the side of the building-LOL! Well, Bobby, I think you are getting along rather nicely, for now. Do not forget to send some support to the Fog and now Ima needs some too. We all love you all very much and want you all to get well.

Mike Rea is also needing a little TLC. It is his special day next Tuesday. Bobby, you might send him another letter maybe? It probably would brighten his spirits alot. Alot of your Barbaromaniacs are sending their good wishes to him also. Just a thought...

Morning, Barbaro! Hope you're sleeping in today, maybe breakfast in bed! Have a good day full of resting and healing. Keep it up, one day at a time, big boy.

God bless Barbaro, make his bones stronger every day.

God bless Foggy, let the chemo shrink those tumors.

Thank you Alex, for all you do, have a semi relaxing day for a change!

Sweet Warrior Foggy, Good morning to you too. I hope you are eating and staying strong during this bad time for you. I know you will pull through, you have that big famous heart and will push ahead to better days. I love you, will hope to hear more good news about you today.

Good morning everyone. Assuming ACN again for our inspirational guy, Barbaro.

I watched Showing Up yesterday and was pulling for him but I'm OK with Edgar winning. Glad everyone came home safely.

Got my UPenn thank you in the mail on Friday and it was in an envelope so the picture luckily didn't get messed up. Are some of the thank you's just postcards? That would almost guarantee the post office will damage it. Do we have a final donation total yet?

Looking forward to "the next round" with the horse slaughter. And a great article about the Barbaromaniacs!

Thanks Alex for the updates and all you do to keep us informed, even on your day "off" (if there is such a thing.) Have a great day..........it's really nice today in Maryland.

Good morning, Starshine! I just know you had ACN and will have ACD. Since today is Sunday, that means you've completed ANOTHER ACW.

Bobby, you're almost two months out from the laminitis diagnosis and hoof resection. Every day with you is an inspiration.

    oh, ugh:

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, a member of the GOP leadership, said Senate action is unlikely before the recess. Spokeswoman Jamie Loftus said Ms. Hutchison hadn't decided whether to support the ban.

Sen. John Cornyn, also of Texas, opposes the ban. Spokesman Brian Walsh said the senator was concerned about owners' rights and believed the industry would simply shift "to foreign factories which treat horses even less humanely."

Good luck and safe racing today to lovely Redaspen and all the other horses and riders out there.

Glad to hear you are continuing to heal. I hope you get to go out and graze today weather permitting.

I received both the postcard earlier and the envelope for Barbaro Fund donation in honor of Dr R's Birthday, I donated more money for Dr R BD so maybe that is the difference? I love the written message, so eloquent.

    Good morning Bobby,

I haven't had a chance to write as I have been busy coming back from saratoga, helping to get HR503 passed, and going to belmont yesterday.

I hope you are having a pleasent sunday and enjoying those carrots.

During my visit to saratoga I went to the thoroughbred hall of fame museum. the gift shop had a wide picture of you at the during the derby. You were in front and the cavalcade of the other 19 horses were stretched out behind you. It really is an amazing picture. I hope that when they vote for the eclipse awards they will remember you outstanding feat.

Saw the jackson's at belmont yesterday. Showing Up tried so hard to win. He just missed second. For the first time against older horses,I think he did great!! When he was going out on to the track I wished him good luck and told him to win for Bobby!!!

I hope LITF is coping with the chemo therapy. As a cancer survivior, enen though I never had to go through chemo, I can understand what you are going through. Hang in there. We are all praying for you.

Shelley, thank you for all that you did in DC and I hope Ima is okay.

Shelley A: Best of luck with I'ma. Anna in Texas...
It was my understanding from another Texas poster that Hutchison has been opposing the ban all along.

Cornyn...Well, I certainly do not want anymore slaughter houses to open, but we would be getting them out of the U.S. and protecting our American horses. The killers are surely not going to pay to have them shipped overseas for slaughter. I don't want to see any horse harmed in this dreadful way though. It is amazing how politians will twist the facts to suit their beliefs. ugh!

    Good morning, All,

About horses begin transported out of the US for slaughter: Don't the anti-slaughter bills include a BAN on transportation of horses ANYWHERE for the purpose of slaughter? That's my impression.

    Good morning, beautiful Barbaro,

Hi, I've tried to post all morning and keep getting interrupted so Hello all, with a very late good morning !

Barbaro Jackson, I'll bet you smell like a gardenia blossom this morning after your Sat. splish splash. Humiliatin' for a tough guy like you ! But you know you enjoy getting out of the stall, even for a bath. My Arabian didn't like a bath , but tolerated it good naturedly. In your photos you seem to like the soapy scrub.!

    ##### Shelley, I join everyone else here wishing the best for Ima, and you , and the others. God bless.

Thank all of you who commented on my post last night. I do feel we are a band of warriors following Barbaro , our champion. We will win this battle over horse slaughter. I'm beginning to think that informing the public and arousing them to call Senators is more effective than us calling them over and over. We want a public outcry. How to get to that point is another matter , and we all need to work on ideas. You all have some great ideas already.

Happy Sunday to all , especially to Barbaro and The Fog, both of whom I hope are doing well today. I will be so glad when every one returns and we get back to our acns. Bless all here.

Open each heart to believe in The Fog's complete healing, and in his complete recovery.

    ################# MORE MIRACLES IN PROGRESS

Since this was posted by Stephanie of MHR toward the end of the last cached batch of msgs, I wanted to repost to get more exposure. Her post:

I would like to take this moment to THANK CJ, Faye Cohen and a very special donor who
wishes to remain anonymous at this time, but is very much a part of the Barbaro family here. All
of you have truly Helped Heal the Hearts of Horses in Need at Miracle Horse Rescue.

With the passing of H.R. 503, our efforts in rescuing horses in need are going to be much greater. We here at Miracle Horse Rescue are about to embark on one of our biggest challenges (other than our daily challenges). On October 7th, one of my directors, Darla Halstead and myself will be leaving for Oregon. We are attending an Auction on Sunday in hopes of rescuing horses from certain demise. We do not know how many we can rescue due to limited funding as we are caring for 34 now at our facility. However, our special donor has added to the funding but again, we know that it is limited because of the individuals whom we will be bidding against and they seem to have unlimited funding..(GRrrrrrr!) The horses then will be taken to a very special place, friends that have a ranch in the Oregon area (and whom have adopted three horses from Miracle Horse Rescue)there they will receive shots, their Coggins testing etc., and give them time to rest.
Once this is accomplished, then they will make the trek to Nevada, where we will meet up in
Reno to make the swap and bring them HOME. I hope that we can bring home several and then
locate reponsible, caring, FOREVER homes for them. If you are interested in participating in this effort please feel free to email me at rescue@miraclehorse.com

Once again, THANK YOU CJ, FAYE COHEN, and OUR SPECIAL DONOR. We have all come together in the efforts of the horses due to a very special horse, BARBARO!!!!!!!

Just my observation, but now that I realized I get HRTV I have it on and the horses are so beautiful and they each have their own personality and presence and I can see that. This really brings the slaughter issue back home to me again.
Dawn wrote about that idiot rodeo rider who was so glad to SELL and load his "favorite" rodeo horse (that could no longer perform due to wear and tear from the rodeo years) on to the slaughter truck to be shipped to Texas. I can only imagine what an arthritic horse that had trusted his human felt in that cramped truck and then in the killing line at the death plant. SICK.
A bullet would have been better.

Bless Bobby's heart . . . he's going to be warm today with all the jerseys! But the layered look is in! And, isn't that what we're really all about? Putting aside the "competition" for the "cooperation"?

Barbaro, let's hope Peter takes you out today for some nice grazing. It is a gorgeous day! We love you and hope beyond hope your hoof is growing!

Wendy, great story about seeing Foggy; thank you for sharing! He is in our thoughts and so much love is sent his way. Take it easy, sweet horse and rest.

The article about all of us who love Barbaro brought tears to my eyes. It really is remarkable.. thank you Barbaro for touching us in such a profound way. You are in my heart!

    Another observation from watching HRTV:
These beautiful creatures run their hearts out not knowing the risk for the reward of a bath, praise and pats, and some extra treats.
They are not meant to be used up like a tube of toothpaste when all the life is squeezed out of them they are thrown away to the slaughter house.

They deserve to be cared for and then humanely euthanized. ( But a bullet is better than the death house. )

    Hi Everyone,

Congratulations to Tim on Randy's Bullet's win!

Congratulations's to Miraculous Miss and her connections on her great, successful return to the winners's circle.

Good Luck to Red Aspen today for safe and lucky racing.

Healing thoughts and wishes, always for Bobby. Every step of the way, every minute of the day good thoughts are flowing your way.

To my darling Foggy --- Show the world that you are stronger than that stupid disease. You are going to make it!There is tremendous love surrounding you. With love there is healing.

    Happy Birthday to Mike Rea.

A special prayer for a twelve year old mixed breed doggie named Lady who looks like a little fox (rescued at age one by my friend Marriane; and given as a gift to her parents who were mourning the loss of their dog). Lady has spent the past wee at the vet in New Bern, N.C. where she lives (near the outer banks; on the coast of North Carolina). Over the holiday weekend she was unable to get up. Her legs failed her. They are trying to discover what it is that is ailing her. If she is unable to get up by tomorrow; they have no chonice but to put her down. Marianne's parents are elderly and are unable to carry her about. Marianne lives in another state and has two dogs of her own to worry about.

Lady needs some healing energy sent her way. I know that the good folks on the TWR site have love and prayers to spare for all the animals in need.

Thank you on Lady's behalf for your kindness.

Love and healing thoughts; and positive energy,

    Bobbie B.!
good grief, North Carolina? Isn't it bad enough that man left Kansas and left my poor Pomeranian with the name "the Dog formerly known as Roy Williams"? (I can't change his name again, since he is a rescue dog and this is his second name).
No, our Bobby is loyal to Philadelphia, and still waiting for an update, but I know everyone is busy today.

Very cool article re: the Barbaromaniacs; thanks Alex for sharing it with us. The generosity, goodwill, caring, and purpose (HR 503, for example) of the Barbaromaniacs is truly mind-blowing but certainly is no "accident". Although I never would have wished injury for Barbaro, I thank him for his shining example of pure goodness. Guess that's what unites us, though, isn't it?

Faye & CJ, Thanks for directing me to MHR. I signed their guestbook and received a lovely response back from Stephanie thanking me for my "kind words." (This was before I had even donated.) She sounds like such a wonderful woman, and she most certainly is doing great work at MHR. I really enjoyed the website and loved looking at all the pictures of those sweet angels and reading their stories. MHR is a little piece of heaven on earth! Oh, and I've been voting for Stephanie like a mad woman in the Volvo for Life Award. I so hope she wins!

I'm very happy this morning. I just picked up my mail from yesterday to find I had received my Barbaro Fund postcard with that beautiful picture of Barbaro and our hero Edgar! On the back where they thank you someone had written in, "In honor of Dr. Dean Richardson's birthday," which made me feel really good. It warms my heart knowing that I've contributed, if only in a small way, to the care of the animals at NBC. What an honor, indeed!

Foggy, hope you're having a good Sunday babykins. I loved reading about your visit with Wendy. She's a lucky, lucky girl. Your Mr. Gilchrist is such a nice man. I feel so much better knowing that you're being taken care of by someone so kind and who obviously loves you so much. You stay strong honey. I just know those treatments are going to make you better. Love you Foggy!

Hello sweet Barbaro! It's so amazing how you have inspired so many people from so many different places to come together as one to fight for compassion and kindness in this country for your brothers and sisters. You are an amazingly gifted boy, and your achievements have now far surpassed any race you might have won. I am so proud of you. Everday you lift my spirits and make me proud to say that "I love Barbaro," and oh honey, how I do love you!
You have a wonderful day sweetheart! Lots of hugs, kisses and nuzzlies to you Bobby!

Barbaro - it's a beautful day in the neighborhood (CT)....feels a bit like early fall, and I know you feel like a million $$$ 'cause you had a massage. So who deserves it more? Saw you and your doc on HRTV again (repeat of yesterday's update) and you sure are gorgeous...bandages, casts and all! Do you ears fit through the slits in your Cowboys hat? Turn on your tv - the game is on! Love you, big boy!

WENDY - thanks so much for your moving account of visiting Foggy. I'm impressed that you actually got to see him....Greg Gilchrist seems like a great guy, we've heard other stories about people bringing treats and being taken in to see Foggy. He is such a beautiful horse, especially with that off-center blaze!

Well Barbaromaniacs - we're now famous. Actually, Bobby is famous - we're just the tag-a-longs.

Shelley A - I'm breathing a sigh of relief that Ima is out grazing. She's being a "horse". that's good - returning to normal. Thankfully the new caretakers are giving her time to heal.I'll continue to pray for both of you. Please let us know ASAP after you see her tomorrow.

Wendy - thank you again and again for your description of the LITF visit. I'm thrilled that you were there and can tell us all about it.

Jo - things are back to normal now that you are posting again. You are a fountain of information and excel at giving us all the race results.

Someone mentioned they thought "transporting of horses" was part of the HR 503 bill. I do recall reading that in the bill, which I think would prevent those purchasing them here to send them to slaughterhouses elsewhere.

######### I just talked to Shirley Rea, Mike Rea's Mother, on the phone today; called to give the family a heads-up to watch for the mail - I sent him a 2 CD set of my last live horsey musical show as a Bday gift. (Thought the family might want to screen it for suitability.) She was so sweet, they had just gotten back from Church (Mike goes out on field trips), and she was arranging to pick up her own dog, who'd been with a caretaker who is no longer able to care for the dog (I believe she said his name is Dreyfuss). They have found a motel near Sun Bridge rehab where Mike is, where the dog can stay, and also there is a pool where Mike may be able to start some hydrotherapy. She said how happy he and his family all are with the responses from people from TWR.

Alex, please thank Peter for the updates.

I have been thinking all day of LITF eyeing up those treats..so cute!

Great interview with Mrs Jackson - she sure does love our boy. She is very optimistic in her words! Although I'm sure she is concerned that evrything continues to be good. Dr Dreamy did say in a past interview that he could see the path through the woods - which is great.

    WE LOVE YOU BARBARO!!!!!

Love Dr. Dean and Mrs. Jackson! The Bloodhorse article is so fabulous!!! Sounds like Dr. R. is the one who wanted to keep going when things got bad with B in July.

My favorite quote is from Mrs. Jackson who talks about being madly in love with Barbaro. From everything I have read previously I absolutely believe her. The headline about Barbaro beginning to blossom is wonderful. I am going to print this out and take it to work to place by my desk. What a great day!!!!!

'Gretchen Jackson: It's Still Day to Day, But Barbaro 'Starting to Blossom'

    Date Posted: 9/10/2006 4:15:42 PM
    Last Updated: 9/10/2006 6:09:59 PM

Roy and Gretchen Jackson were at Keeneland Sunday looking at September sale yearlings. But their Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Barbaro wasn't far from their minds. Gretchen Jackson talked about the ups and downs with Barbaro, who continues to recuperate at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center from the shattered hind leg he suffered in the Preakness (gr. I).
THE BLOOD-HORSE: We get regular reports on Barbaro from the New Bolton Center. From your standpoint, how is he doing?
GRETCHEN JACKSON: "You're naturally guarded.

"For me, who is madly in love with this horse, it's increased my awe for him since his injury. He has just carried that look throughout that 'I can deal.' He's just told us more than our brains have told us. We've just responded more to him and how he's been than going by the medical books.

"We were like that (close), at least I was, (to not) putting him through any more hoops when he got the laminitis. I was really upset; is this fair to keep him (alive)? (Dr.) Dean Richardson said, 'I'd like to try a few things. I will not keep going if there is (no way to control) pain.' It was pretty dire straits there. And we all agreed (to keep going) because there's Barbaro, looking out his stall door, saying, 'Hey, can't I vote, too? I want to be given every chance' They've done a super job at New Bolton."

TBH: Following Barbaro's injury, you could have limited the information released about him. Why didn't you?
JACKSON: "When he won the Kentucky Derby, I thought we lost our horse. He was the world's horse; he was everybody's horse. Everybody knew him. He started getting fan mail and all that stuff that happens to a Kentucky Derby winner I suppose. And we just thought we owed it to the public, all those people who sent him notes, flowers, carrots, sugar, mints. I mean you should see what the public has done."

TBH: How do you approach Barbaro's situation now. Is it still day to day?
Jackson: "Yes, it's day to day.

TBH: What are you doing here today at Keeneland?
JACKSON: "We come down here every year, and if we can pick up something that we like -- breeding, conformation, and the price is right -- we get it."

I read this site every day. I am in awe of the poetry and quality of the posts. They just get better and better each day!

I am very ashamed that I have made no meaningful contribtion to this site in quite a while.

You guys managed to throw a mean birthday party as well as win in the House of Representatives. You did it with such aplomb!

yes it is great that Barbaro is loved by his owners - in love by Mrs Jackson - and I know we won't admit it by Dr Dreamy is so in love this Barbaro. He is saying 6-12 months more - he doesn't want Barbaro to leave. How cute is that.

I'm sure with his healing and his rehab it may be that long - but is Dr Dreamy gonna be with him through rehab?? I bet he is - can't let go of his new love.

WE ALL LOVE BARBARO - how did I fall in love with a horse I have never met is beyond me!!

Dawn in Omaha posted this yesterday
    #####
    Hi Everyone:

So irate after reading an article in my local paper today regarding the horse slaughter bill, that I simply had to post. If you'd like to read the entire article, here is the link:
    http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pg=46&u_sid=2238973

And here is a small excerpt that just stunned me:

Horseman Jim Berry of Osceola, Neb., who raises and breaks horses, says slaughter is needed as an option for disposing of unwanted horses.

"I'm afraid if they shut down the slaughter plants, these horses will be turned loose, because people won't know what to do with them," he said.

The annual cost of feeding and maintaining a horse is estimated at more than $2,000.

As a rodeo cowboy, Berry was fond of Big John, his roping horse, which developed a painful arthritis-like condition. He said he made sure Big John was sold for slaughter, not to a new owner.

"The only way to rope on him was to have him drugged up," Berry said, "and I wasn't going to have that happen to him."

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?! What kind of sick, convoluted logic IS this!?! This man who was "fond" of a horse and could obviously afford travel and entry fees to rodeos to rope on Big John couldn't afford to have a vet put him down or the bullet to put through his head and then call a rendering truck!?! I am just blown away by this. . .

I took the liberty of looking up Mr. Berry's contact information, courtesy of whitepages.com, should anyone besides me feel compelled to let this "rodeo cowboy" who "raises and trains horses"--God forbid--know how you feel:

    James Berry
    13899 P Road
    Osceola, Nebraska 68651-4878
    (402)-747-2801

If he's stupid enough to go on record with his statement, then I'm more than happy to let the Barbaro Nation know about it.

Done with my rant now. . .thanks for indulging me.
Wouldn't have DREAMED of doing this before this site.

    BELIEVE IN BARBARO

Posted by: Dawn in Omaha at September 10, 2006 02:15 AM
    ------------------------------------------------
James Berry when you get arthritis I hope your kids put you down. To bad there is no slaughter houses for people!
You know he got money sending Big John for slaughter.
These are the people who we will have to fight to pass this bill.

    Good Evening, Team Barbaro!

Mrs. Jackson in love with Barbaro...that is so beautiful...we are all in love with him, but I remember her face when she talked to ABC to announce he had begun to graze. She glowed - just glowed. This interview shows her depth of feeling for Barbaro. What a wonderful person she is.

LITF, its still afternoon out your way so hopefully you are getting some fresh air today. When its time, get lots of rest tonight, my Long Time Sun.

There was some discussion here about radiation in treating cancer in horses, some people saying it is used, some saying it isn't. Per UC Davis, it is, but it is only recently being used in equines, only with some very modern technique now available there. Research continues.

I am a Jane in Ct. and have been posting on this site since the Preakness, but don't think I am the one you are looking for. Glad our Bobby had a good day, lets hope for ACN.

    Good evening everyone!!

An uneventful day for Barbaro which is wonderful news!

I loved the "You might be a Barbaromaniac if..." quotes. Too funny.

I am leaving early in the morning for Greenwich Conn. and haven't packed so I'll have to catch up on posts tomorrow.

I hope everyone has a good evening.

    Good night Sweet Barbaro,

You are in my thoughts and prayers. Continue to heal and have ACN's.

Guys, the Jazz man is tired from a day of outside work around the house and an Eagles Victory.

It is 8pm, I will pray for Bobby and LTIF and head to my couch for the Simpsons and the Family Guy.

I love you all FOR SURE.

    #### MORE "You know you're a Barbaromanianc when"

*You risk your job to lurk, scroll and post on TWR

*You start watching horses races for the first time since Ruffian

*You're 43 years old and you restart your childhood habit of asking your parents to buy you a horse for your birthday

*You're seriously thinking about heading to the basement, braving the spiders (you know they're there, and they're probably all brown recluses), and digging out your childhood Breyer collection to display in your living room

*You're thinking those Breyer models would look really good in a nice mahogany or cherry breakfront cabinet, and you find yourself cabinet-hunting online

*You're a confirmed agnostic who regularly lights candles, participates in vigils, and has come to believe in the power of positive thinking and in miracles

What an incredible person Gretchen is. And Roy, too. God bless them. They have shined a light, and I knew they would do right. They're good people, they love their horses, and they are aware of the bigger responsiblilty of owning a Derby winner. (Something the people who last owned Ferdinand never understood.) They have inspired Harry Aleo and Greg Gilchrist, who would have done right by LITF anyway, but have now opened up their barn and their hearts to the collective prayer and love of people they've never met.

Barbaro has made a difference! And how lucky he was to have broken down at the beginning of the race, to have had Edgar in the saddle pulling him down to a measured stop, that he had the sense -- and athleticism - to run on three legs, that New Bolton was an hour away, that, yes, he was a Kentucky Derby winner, but also that he had an incredible combination of people who stood for him. He had his groom, his trainer, his vet, his jockey. He had Dr. Richardon and his staff.

And he had Gretchen and Roy Jackson.

    Now, he has us, too.

    Alie,

I will pray very hard for Erin. I know how terrible her family feels. I found out last week that my stepmother has metastasized cancer to her liver and abdomen from ovarian cancer she suffered from two year ago, and she will be undergoing surgery on Tuesday. Of course, it is always much more hard to understand when a serious illness strikes a child...it just seems so unfair. I will keep Erin and her family in my thoughts and prayers, as well as everyone at KF. Please let us know how little Erin is doing. Stay strong and believe. We are all here for Erin, her family and all of you. I'm going to light a candle now for Erin. God bless her.

I will definately include them in my prayers. Please let them know that we are here. There seems to always be someone here.

Cancer is scary. But the research has advanced a great deal in the treatment of cancers. Hopefully Erin and her family will have options. My heart breaks when I hear of someone fighting cancer. A child, I'm now in tears.

I will be begging God for strength, support and loving care for Erin and her family.

    Take care.

Please, God hold little Erin in your loving arms, and surround her with his healing light. I have faith in the healing power of God to restore Erin to her natural perfection. God's healing life, love and strength are flowing through every cell of Erin's body, making her whole and well

    My dearest Annointed One ...

It seems as if I haven't written you here in days, or months even ... everything has been a whirlwind since Thursday's House Victory, and how sweet that was. It was all for you, Bobby ... how could we display any less effort and energy and strength and courage than you have already shown all of us ... how could we blaze your trail unless we followed in your footsteps? We can't and we won't because you have led the way in triumph and we will not do any less because we would be ashamed to stand so small in your shadow.

You will not be denied this complete victory, Bobby ... that is your mission, your purpose and just the tip of the enormous legacy that is still to be written ... the first sentence has yet to be composed, but the words will literally transcend and lift off the pages in the hands of the perfect storyteller, but that is such a long, long way off.

And so, the Senate will pass this bill ... the Horse Protection Act ... but we who know and love you will proudly refer to it as "The Barbaro Bill" or "The Barbaro Act" or "The Barbaro Referendum" ... whatever the final word, your name will be attached in a very prominent manner and fashion ... nothing less is deserving of The Kentucky Derby Champion who would be King!

Love you, Sweet Boy ... we're all working our tails off for you so that you can grow yours back!!

Thank you, Faith, Mikki and Molly, Jake, and all for the prayers and heartfelt support for our fellow travelers in need, Erin and Sandie's stepmother, plus I would like to add on this anniversary all those caretakers and rescue workers on 9/11 who are now suffering with little or no assistance for the incredible damage to their lungs and bodies.

Children especially, and Barbaro and Lost in the Fog are not much more than children along with the other young horses on the track, remind us how precious and fragile life can be. Would that we could shoulder their pain and lift them into the healing light... Thank you all for such spiritual uplifting as I have never found in one group.

Posting for the BNN (Barbaro News Network)

Hello, this is Lynda the Lucky Grape, here with today's shorter version of The Matz Report.

As you all know our very own Michael Matz took a look at the yearlings being offered for auction on Monday thru Wednesday yesterday, and we are positive that he found some that he liked. We do not know how many owners he may be buying for, but we DO KNOW that the Jacksons were there, and they were looking as well. The Matz Report will keep a close eye the next few days on the sales and will report any activity from them.

This is Lynda the Lucky Grape, for The Matz Report.

Mike C- you still out there? I miss your insight as I seem to always learn so much from you. You always get me thinking too. Well, usually I'm already thinking, you just put it better into words.

Micael & DD Matz- thank you once again. You mean so much to Barbaro and to fans like me.

To Mike Rea and family - may the light continue to shine on you

    Alie,
It is just so awful that a little one would have such a terrible disease. I have a granddaughter the same age and it is like a stake thru the heart. I will pray for healing for her and strength for her family and loved ones in the days to come. Please let us know if there is anything we can do. Is she in the hospital? Would she like cards to put up? Coloring pages? Or perhaps only prayers at this time?

Posted by: Sam I Am at September 11, 2006 2:56 AM

A section from Gretchen's article really struck me:

"We were like that (close), at least I was, (to not) putting him through any more hoops when he got the laminitis. I was really upset, is this fair to keep him (alive)? (Dr.) Dean Richardson said, 'I'd like to try a few things. I will not keep going if there is (no way to control) pain.' It was pretty dire straits there. And we all agreed (to keep going) because there's Barbaro, looking out his stall door, saying, 'Hey, can't I vote, too? I want to be given every chance' They've done a super job at New Bolton."

We know the vets and the Jacksons decided to keep going. But it was looking at Barbaro that kept them going. I'm telling you, this horse is one in a million. He told them what to do. He wasn't through yet and by god we'd better give him a chance. This is really emotional for me to think about.

Thank you to The Jacksons, Dr. Dean, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, and so many others. (oops Edgar)

We are witnessing something special. I'm sure it's the closest thing to a miracle I've ever seen. Thank you Barbaro. I will pray for you nightly.

Hey guys, I just thought of something that might be a very important item to put into our emails, phone calls, etc. to our senators.

Supporters of horse slaughter want people to believe that many of the horses led to slaughter are "unwanted" horses and how will our infrastructure absorb all these "unwanted" horses if slaughter is banned, blah, blah, blah. My point is this: If so many of these horses are "unwanted," then why do the killer buyers have to outbid people for these horses at auction or steal them? If people are bidding on these horses they are obviously not "unwanted!" Maybe we should all mention that as a counterpoint to the opposition's contention that we won't be able to deal with all the "unwanted" horses if slaughter is banned. See what I'm getting at? Horses being bid on, and obviously those that are stolen, are NOT UNWANTED HORSES!!! This won't be an issue if slaughter is banned! I think this could really be important as this point is one of the biggest so-called concerns the slaughter opponents is throwing out there!

I wrote another poem recently, and have just posted it on the forum under "Barbaro Poems and Videos." The title is "What He Doesn't Know." Hope it will be an encouragement.

These words published today seemed especially meaningful to underscore the inspiration: "He has just carried that look throughout that 'I can deal.' He's just told us more than our brains have told us. We've just responded more to him and how he's been than going by the medical books." Gretchen Jackson, quoted from bloodhorse.com

New prayers going out for Erin and family, as well as for Barbaro and Fog, as always, and for many others here who are facing their own personal needs for miracles. And for those horses who are still caught in a terrible cycle until we can get final legislation passed.

Posted by: Gloria at September 11, 2006 3:52 AM

Thank you God for the miracle of The Fog, and for his right and perfect healing. Guide, inspire and direct those responsible for his care, as Divine Order manifests in every situation concerning The Fog. Let each of his caregivers see him with love and compassion, and with thoughts only for The Fog's highest good. Open each heart to believe in The Fog's complete healing, and in his complete recovery.

Divine Love fills every cell of The Fog's body with healing light, and all that does not serve him, is now dissolved and dissipated in a right and perfect way. God Bless The Fog, and all of those who love him.

I know, I know...mean ol' Auntie Susan is all "don't do this...". Humor me. The St. Liam affair was way too frightening.

OKAY, good night Barbaro Nation. Everyone sleep well and have a safe and peaceful day tomorrow.

Posted by: Susan E. at September 11, 2006 4:09 AM

In the article where Mrs. Jackson commented about Bobby's look of "I can deal" - just my belief - Bobby absolutely can deal!! I think Barbaro is a warrior in this life - I believe he has assisted warriors of the past - and he has chosen to be a warrior in this life - he signed on for this, as did we all. He is an evolved spirit - and has called each and every one of us (and I beleive we all know and feel this in our hearts) We HAVE to be here - we really have no choice. Barbaro has a job to do, and I believe we are all here helping him do his job. He is a messenger - for the highest good of all. The Ambassador of The Spirit of the Horse! He has called the best for the best.

Hope I haven't offended with this - just my opinion.

There is an old mexican tale about certain creatures that have the ability to
desaparecer, to disappear, vanish and reappear. This story was told about
a young colt, who at that time had'nt been weened and was still nameless. When the signal was sent out for the horses to come eat, all showed up but this little colt,
the entire crew of stablehands throughly searched the entire meadow, but were unable to find
this lost colt. The crew was at their wits end, when all of a sudden , this little colt walked out of the fog and appeared,as if by magic the stablehands were amazed and believe that this little colt was blessed with special powers and had the ability to desaparecer and was one of gods special creatures. Lost in the Fog went on in his career to win many races and shatter many track records, last year he won the Eclipse Award as the nations top sprinter, which makes me believe that the stablehands
were right, in their belief that he is one of gods special creatures.
[We pray that you win this race.] FOTF---Friends of the Fog. Get well soon.

OMG, Annie, I just found out about Erin. Reiki is on the way to your family. Is there anything I can do? I'll stop down at KF tomorrow (today is Windy/Stormy day) and catch up. Prayers going out as well.

Five years ago today our world appeared to be falling apart from the forces of hatred - it was less happy, less safe. But today I look around and see the power of love, determination and miracles that have come out of our sweet Barbaro. The Barbaro Effect transcends all the hate and darkness that seems to overwhelm us sometimes. All of us are here as part of a force that can make our world better - and isn't that such a gift?

    Alie & Annie

Along with everyone else, I was very saddened to read about Erin's diagnosis. However, I also believe in the power of prayer and of course will add my prayers to those of all the other Barbaromaniacs pleading for her cure.

Gee, thanks for passing along the email on racing at Longchamp in Paris. When I was a college student, I lived right next door to that track--well, technically, across the ring road from it. I always wanted to go in but never had the $$$! I remember it struck me as very fancy, and unfortunately I had no change to spare and no suitable wardrobe in those days!

    Good Morning Mr. B.

Loved reading Mrs. Jackson say how strong and intelligent you are, and that you have been that way through every step of recovery. There is still plenty of road to travel to get to FR (full recovery), but all systems are go at this stage.

Alex-thanks as always for fabulous updates. It seemed as if the writer in the article about MM was just clueless as to her long layoff.

Mike Rea-glad that you keep doing well!

Have to bring my nephew his birthday present, so I'll check in later.

    Good Morning:

It is great to hear from Mrs. Jackson. To hear her comments is like hearing a mother talk about a child. Hoping to hear the news that the cast is coming off and laministis is no longer a problem.

Mr. Aleo and Gilchrist, LITF is special to have an owner and trainer willing to go through everything they can to know they have done everything they could have done, instead of giving up and going along with what the norm is.

To anyone who had a family, friend, or in anyway was affecteded by 9/11, my heart goes to you. Not much more I can say, as I cannot say that I know or understand what it is like to have lost someone under your circumstances. Each circumstance is different.

    Good morning, all!

Bobby, I haven't forgotten you...everything's been in upheaval since the victory in the House Thursday.

Just popping in to say how proud I am of how well you are doing, sweet one, and how cool to read your mom's thoughts about you. May today be another day of healing and growing hoof, with a nip here and there, and some tasty carrots and lush grass.

Foggy, I pray for you each day. Chemo, do your thing!!

Fellow Barbaromaniacs, congratulations on all you've done. Just amazing.

    Prayers for both of you.
    #### I don't know what I am going to do when I leave for MD on Thursday......my parents aren't computer people. Maybe I'll pop over to the library and have a look at Tim Woolley so I don't get stale.....I'll be gone for 8 days....funny how you get attached to people and animals.....like it's your lifeline. Better thought.... maybe I'll just pop up to Fair Hill and see the countryside for myself in person. Mother lives about an hour away!

I would like to take a moment to pause and remember all of those lost on September 11, 2001

The Office Workers, The Police, The Firefighters, and the Passengers and Crew on the planes. One of those was my friend Al Marchand. He was my Police Lt. in Alamogordo, NM until I moved here to The Keys. When he retired he decided to fly for United as a flight attendent. He really encouraged me to come here and fulfill my destiny. I miss you Al. I know that on that fateful day, you were doing all you could to protect those passengers. I will remember you always my friend.

My prayers also go out to little Erin---such a terrible thing for anyone, let alone a child. May she find comfort and peace, and may her parents and caregivers find strength and wisdom to help her however they can.

    #####

It's been 5 years since 9/11/01...it doesn't seem like it's been that long. My brother in law was working on top of a NYC bank building and saw the planes fly into the WTC. He just passed away last month from a brain hemmorhage. I'm originally from NJ, now live in GA, so I felt like I was right there. All the scenes were so familiar to me. I just want to lift up all the families of the victims in prayer today, for God to give them comfort and peace.

Wouldn't it be nice if people could come together in peace like we do on this site. Have a blessed day Barbaro friends!

Good morning to "His Majesty" - our sweet Bobby!
may you enjoy the beautiful day and eat grass in the sunshine!

    #####
Today here in Pittsburgh is the same EXACT weather as 5 years ago. I remember it like it just happened. It was a Tuesday. I was working at the time in the buying offices of the now defunct Kaufmann's department store chain headquartered in Downtown Pittsburgh. Most of the buyers and senior board had flown to NYC the night before for the monthly meetings with the clothing vendors all headquartered on Broadway in Manhatten. I was riding the bus in and looking out the window at the beautiful morning. It was cool and there was not a cloud in the blue sky. I thought to my self that it was going to be a great day! I was going to sit outside and take a long lunch and leave early since the bosses were away. I got to work and turned on the radio to the local oldies rock station were the DJ's always had hilarious jokes and all of a sudden the announcement about the first plane going into the Tower came on and no one knew what kind of plane it was - maybe a small commuter plane and this was a freak accident. THEN came the news of the second plane going into the other Tower and everyone was absolutely SHOCKED. Those of us left ran up to the employee lounge to watch the TV. Then came word of a plane going into the Pentagon. We knew this was an attack and we were dumbstruck. All of our bosses were in Manhatten and you could not get through to them by phone or email as there was too much traffic. I was so shocked seeing the World Trade Center burning and then watching people jumping out the windows to their deaths instead of letting themselves be burned alive. Then the Towers fell.I remember in the aftermath seeing a helicopter shot of the Statue of Liberty in the harbor with the black smoke of the Towers rubble in the back round.
Next we were told to evacuate Pittsburgh as Flight 93 and those brave souls were still in the air and they flew over our airspace. Then a scramble to get out of the city as we were ordered to evacuate. My family in Germany in the meantime were leaving me messages because the news there kept saying a hijacked plane may have to be shot down over Pittsburgh.
I finally made it home and numbly turned the news on and the day was sunny and hot just like it will be here today.

Thanks so much for leading us to the article by Bloodhorse with Gretchen Jackson. It was a great interview, truly showing us what a wonderful kind and compassionate person Ms. Jackson is; her love and concern about Barbaro clearly comes through. Barbaro has been so lucky to have the affection from these owners, Mr. Matz, and the entire medical staff at New Bolton. Although she says she has not gotten the all clear sign from Dr. Richardson, I would think that Barbaro's ongoing progress without complications are great signs for his future recovery. So let's not let up in our prayers and hopes for this fantastic horse...Believe..

Miraculous Miss earns third straight graded stakes win in Endine

Puglisi Stables's and Steve Klesaris's Miraculous Miss rallied from last to first Saturday and notched her third consecutive graded stakes win in the $200,900 Endine Handicap (G3) at Delaware Park.

Longshot Gilded Gold set the pace in the six-furlong contest, and when she straightened for home with a two-length lead, an upset appeared possible.

Miraculous Miss, with jockey Ramon Dominguez in the irons, was eighth and last as the field entered the stretch. With clear sailing on the outside, Miraculous Miss charged past the field with a momentum that carried her to a 1 1/2

-length victory in 1:09.82 over a fast track. Gilded Gold held on for second, a half-length clear of Coli Bear, who was part of an entry with the winner.

Trained by Klesaris, Miraculous Miss began her winning streak on March 5 with a victory at Gulfstream Park in the Forward Gal Stakes (G2). She followed that on April 15 at Aqueduct, winning the Comely Stakes (G2). She was out of action until the Endine, but the time off obviously had no ill effects.

The Endine was her fourth graded stakes victory overall, as she closed out her two-year-old campaign by winning the Valley Stream Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct, capping an undefeated three-race juvenile season.

The [isd]Mr. Greeley[/isd] chestnut filly has earned $417,120, winning six wins of seven career starts. Her only loss came on February 4 at Gulfstream when she finished fifth in the Old Hat Stakes (G3).

Bred in Kentucky by Dr. Akijiro O'Hara, she is the first stakes

winner from four winners out of the [isd]Silver Deputy[/isd] mare No Small Miracle, who also produced Vosburg Stakes (G1) runner-up Tiger Heart.

Good job exercising your right to vote!

    From Mrs Jackson's Bloodhorse interview:

He has just carried that look throughout that 'I can deal.' He's just told us more than our brains have told us. We've just responded more to him and how he's been than going by the medical books.

I want to be given every chance' ...

Sweet with news of Big B. and Foggy and Bernardini and Miraculous Miss.

Sour with the date from hell 9/11.

God is with all of us today since this was a horrific crime against all humanity.

    Thanks Alex for this site.

    Good morning, Barbaro Nation.

What an emotional experience, reading everyone's posts this morning. Bobby and Fog are not the only brave ones on this site.

Recalling 5 years ago, and the uncertainty and fear and rumors....unable to reach my brother in law in NYC on business in downtown Manhattan; my brother working in a high rise in the San Francisco financial district, hearing rumors that they'd been targeted too...my sister's 5th grade class in Omaha, far from the attacks, freaking out when the fighter jets were scrambled from SAC because all they could hear was a huge Air Force contingent flying low and fast....everyone trying to remember who was travelling today, and who was in NYC or DC today....and the news footage of NYC and DC, over and over.

And all the days of quiet and empty skies that followed. And feeling helpless because we wanted to DO something to help.

We are a resilient, strong, determined people in this country and our friends in other countries, and you can see that shining through by the people on this site.

    GOOD MORNING, ANNOINTED ONE ....

AND HELLO AGAIN, HELLO TO BARBARO NATION, BARBAROMANIACS AND BOBBYHEADS WORLDWIDE!!!

Even though I haven't been 'here' much for the past couple of days, I have been working my tail off with others on "What's Next?" with the Senate Vote. I am focused 'like a laser beam' because it's what I need to do.

That said, however, I have read many of the posts here and just want you all to know that I have lit candles for little Erin and for Ima at gratefulness.org. Thanks for the links and my heart and prayers are with them and their families and friends.

Today is 9/11 and I am reflecting on the horrific occurrences of that day that forever changed America and many of us in our hearts and minds. Good Will and Peace throughout the World is my deepest wish.

Dearest Bobby ... stay well, strong and resolute ... we will win for you, dear heart ... nothing will keep us from moving the mountains if we have to!!

As we commemorate the awful day in American history I am saddened especially by the fact that there is not yet a memorial for those heros who died on Flight 93. The people of Sh_________ are doing there very best to make this happen, but they need our help. I don't know what exactly we can do, but if you have any ideas and want to help in this endeavor let me know please. Thanks.

I have been off this board lately, but had to come on here and post a sentimental story and share it with you folks today given I feel you all have become a sort of family to me:

Some of you may know I purchased a racehorse named "Way of an Eagle". Which, no doubt, I am excited about and have been patiently awaiting his FIRST workout notification via Equibase. Not to mention his first race may be The Futurity if all goes accordingly. Well, I purchased this horse in memory of my father, who died from Agent Orange related illnesses. He loved horse racing and LOVED EAGLES and was very patriotic (serving 28 years in the Army and surviving 3 wars). Well, TODAY I RECEIVED THAT FIRST WORKOUT NOTIFICATION I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR AND
TODAY WOULD HAVE BEEN MY FATHER'S 78th BIRTHDAY........how amazing is that....

THANK YOU POP... I got chocked up on this one...

    Renee and Phyl:

The city of Broomfield here in Colorado unveiled a beautiful memorial to the WTC, Pentagon and Flight 93 last night. There are 2 or 3 bronze sculptures set in stone, plus several standalone bronze sculptures showing people helping people. All of them are pretty big.
It is really touching. I saw it on the news last night.

What a beautiful story and tribute to your father who was a patriot in every sense of the work. Especially today, 9/11 when we remember all the fallen and pray for those who lost loved ones. It's an emotional day for all remembering where they were when they heard the news of the attack. God willing, we will not allow this sort of thing to reach our soil again.

Annie & Erin..........your extended family here at TWR is a powerful one. Many prayers and thoughts are with you through this trying time.

Mrs. Jackson may be in love with this magnigicent horse but I am so in love with her for all that she and Mr. Jackson stand for in the racing community.

Thanks all of you for your generous well wishes! My other boy, Snuff Box, also worked out for the first time on Friday. Eagle is special to me. He is my first horse purchase into a partnership and the name is what sold me - in honor of my father and his love for Eagles and the true spirit it reflects. Eagle is the same way, a genuine spirit that horse has.

Chris Byers: I have spoken with Kerry and Kennedy from MA and my dear friend, Reed Hillman (running for LT Gov) as well as Congressman Richard Neal, whom I used to babysit his children. I grew up with these politicians as they were friends of my father/family. They are actively assisting us and have made several phone calls in the right direction for us. Along with the extraordinaire efforts of all of us here and those of Shelly A and so on and the celebrities (Bo Derek, Willie Nelson, etc...), it seems this will go through sooner than later....I am awaiting a few phone calls on this. I also know they will NOT tell me exactly what they have done or who they have called (kind of like a traffic tickets disappearing LOL).....I just know we have a lot of folks working on this....Reed Hillman told me he has never seen so many people fighting so hard to push a bill through and thought it was AWESOME of the efforts. I told him to look at this site so if ANYONE IS FROM MASSACHUSETTS, PLEASE VOTE FOR REED HILLMAN FOR LT. GOVERNOR IN NOVEMBER - HE HELPED US WITH SOME PHONE CALLS ON THE HR 503 BILL!!!!! and he is a very honorable and wonderful man with high moral ethics and extensive wisdom in many areas....

Sincere thanks to all of you posting about Eagle. Yes, very special day. We are heavily honoring 9/11 here at Fort Bragg. I am heavily honoring my father's birthday at the same time and now, Eagle's workout and progress to his first race.....I am not a holy roller in any sense, however, Barbaro was named after a picture found in their grandparents attic revealed a hound dog named well, Barbaro. Can a human spirit be instilled in a precious animal brought onto this earth? I don't know, perhaps.....I just know this whole Way of an Eagle has been the talk of my family due to my father's Eagle fascination so yes, the workout notification received today on his birthday is a true blessing happening in my life. I can be pretty tough as needed given my job, however, I BELIEVE....

THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO DO:

The soul person right now responsible for getting this bill out of the Commerce Committee is Senator Stevens from Alaska (he NEEDS to be contact by as many folks as possible). He is the man responsible for taking it out of the Commerce Committe.

    Then:

Senator Frist sets the Agenda to hear the identical bill to come up with the Senate version to be passed. Once the Senate version is passed, it goes for the President's signature.

The important folks to contact RIGHT NOW are:

    Senator Stevens/Alaska: 202-224-3004
    Senator Frist/TN 202-224-3344

These two guys are the most important RIGHT NOW for getting this bill rolling, however, all of the above need to be contacted....

Everyone in MO- Mccaskill is on board for this bill. She is totally opposed to any slaughter. Her aide told me that they were surprised by Talents stance on it because his wife is a major horse lover. He is pretty firm on this not passing. Another reason to get rid of him! Lets help get him out- Spread the word! Jen

ACN...way to go Barbaro! Have a great day sweetheart. I'll check on you this evening. Be a good boy!

Lost in the Fog, you hang in there honey. You're a strong, brave boy and you will beat this. I know you will. Have a good day and get lots of rest sweetie pie.

In remembrance of all those who lost their lives on 9/11/01 and their families who have endured so much pain and suffering, the thoughts and prayers of this nation are with each and every one of you. God bless you all.

Let's all remember to take the time today to tell the people in our lives how much they mean to us. Hold that hug a little longer, give that extra little kiss, and always remember to say "I love you" each and every day.

Dedicated to all those who lost so much on 9/11/01:

    We little knew that morning,
God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
    You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
    You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you,
You are always by our side.
    Our family chain is broken,
    And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
    The chain will link again.

Jen, I'm glad to hear McCaskill is opposed but she won't take office till January, assuming she wins. Will she talk about this issue during the campaign and put some pressure on Talent?

Posted by: Susan E. at September 11, 2006 6:06 PM

Susan- I dont know if she will but Ben is the one to talk to. He is the one the deals with "issues". Maybe we could tag team him and see if we could get her talk a little about it. The # is 314-918-8683 Anyone else interested in calling her would be helpful. This might put the pressure on him since the race is so close. Or maybe it wont come to a vote till after the election. Thought you all might be interested in what Senator Lieberman from CT has to say about the Hores Slaughter Bill.

    Dear Ms. Antaya:

Thank you for contacting me to voice your opinion in support of
    protecting our horse population.

As you may know, in 1971, Congress passed the Wild Free-Roaming Horses
and Burro Act (WHFBA; P.L. 92-195) with the intent of preserving wild
horses and burros from slaughter and various other abusive practices. It
set forth provisions for the Department of Interior's Bureau of Land
Management (BLM) to implement rules for transporting horses and for horse
processing plants and to set aside federal lands for horses and burros to
roam without threat. I believe that BLM should do everything in its power
to support and provide the necessary resources to protect and diversify
the wild horse population. Additionally, BLM should follow the guidelines
set forth in WHFBA in order to safeguard our horses while simultaneously
protecting our land and natural resources.

In an eleventh hour maneuver, Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT) attached a
rider to the 2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill allowing BLM to sell wild
horses that are ten years or older for slaughter after three unsuccessful
adoption attempts. Unfortunately, this provision was added without
debate and without going through the normal legislative process. I am
disheartened that this action was taken. Please be assured that I have
worked, and will continue to work, with my colleagues in order to reverse
this decision. Fortunately, Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) has introduced
legislation (S. 576), which would reverse this particular provision and
restore the prohibition on commercial sale and slaughter of wild
free-roaming horses and burros. I am a cosponsor of this important
measure. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Representatives Nick
Rahall (D-WV) and Ed Whitfield (R-KY) have also introduced legislation
that would permanently reverse this provision (H.R. 297).

The House of Representatives passed legislation introduced by
Representatives Rahall and Whitfield on May 19, 2005, that bans BLM from
using any of its $26 million from the fiscal year (FY) 2006 Interior
Appropriations bill (H.R. 2361) for selling horses for slaughter from
western lands. Similar legislation was not included in the Senate version
of the bill; and the language was unfortunately stripped from the final
version of H.R. 2361, which the President signed on August 2, 2005 (P.L.
    109-54).

During debate on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's FY 2006
Appropriations bill (H.R. 2744), the House passed an amendment on June 8,
2005, introduced by Representatives John Sweeney (R-NY) and John Spratt
(D-SC), which prohibits funds from being used to pay for the inspection of
horses under the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA). On September 20,
2005, Senators John Ensign (R-NV) and Robert Byrd introduced an identical
    amendment to H.R. 2744 in the Senate (S.Amdt. 1753), which I supported.
That amendment was reported out of a House-Senate conference committee and
was passed by both chambers. The President signed H.R. 2744 into law on
November 10, 2005 (P.L. 109-97). This legislation is only effective for
    FY 2006.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) now claims that it is
required to inspect horses under FMIA since P.L. 109-97 did not ban
slaughter outright. It is allowing for fee-for-service inspections at the
request of the three existing horse slaughter plants. I strongly believe
this interpretation is wrong. Fee-for-service inspections are usually
reserved for game animals and those not covered under FMIA. At the same
time, USDA is arguing that they are required to continue the inspections
because of requirements under FMIA. It seems as if it is trying to have
it both ways. When Congress passed the law, its intent was to discontinue
the practice of slaughtering horses for meat for human consumption by
refusing the funds required for meat inspection of horses for FY 2006.
The Humane Society of the United States, the Fund for Animals, and other
animal protections groups filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in the
District of Columbia. They argued that not only did USDA violate the new
law, it violated FMIA by allowing inspections funded through private
entities and not by USDA. Unfortunately, the district court rejected the
civil action and injunction requested by the animal protection groups.

Due to the recent actions by USDA, I believe it is time for Congress to
pass a complete ban on slaughtering horses for human consumption.
Representatives Sweeney and Spratt have introduced a measure that would
permanently ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption (H.R. 503).
The House passed H.R. 503 overwhelmingly on September 7, 2006. The
legislation has now been received in the Senate for further action. In
addition, Senator Ensign introduced the Virgie S. Arden American Horse
Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1915). Like H.R. 503, this legislation
prohibits the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving,
possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses or other equines to
be slaughtered for human consumption. I hope you will be pleased to learn
that I am a cosponsor of this bill.

As a lover of horses, please rest assured that I will do all I can to
ensure that not one more American horse is needlessly slaughtered for
human consumption. To keep track of future actions on S. 1915 or H.R.
