    Barbaro Updates: 75

    updates are now here.

Update 658: I just spoke to Peter who had spoken to Michael, who had visited Barbaro today. All remains well with Barbaro today.
updated 6:15 pm, friday september 15

Update 657: And now for today's report from Kennett Florist (timestamp: 9:13 pm):

Everything is good at NBC today. Brought Mr B a nice big baskets of green tops, pears, stud muffins and other treats to get him through the weekend. I will be stopping up tomorrow morning with a little something extra for him, just to make sure he is green top secure.

Also, wanted to repost the link for Senators that Mrs Jackson sent. Fans of Barbaro Unite. S1915 Passes Senate... sorry was thinking about the headlines.

    http://www.kaufmanzoning.net/horsemeat/109senators_Ensign_Byrd_vote%5B1%5D.html

I also wanted to note this offer (Fans of Barbaro Band for Horses), for those generously contributing to rescue organizations. Thanks Lisa and Skyler.

Update 656: Apparently Kennett Florist had trouble posting in the comments yesterday, so this was their report from yesterday, e-mailed to me by Rachel:

When we went to NBC Thursday we were told Barbaro was happily munching on his carrots and sharing some grapes with an ICU mate. We threw in some stud muffins as well since we know he adores them!

Check out the pictures from Mike Rea's Birthday party. Nancy has them up on his snapfish site and they are so awesome!

Mrs Jackson has sent the list of Senators as promised. It is the best info we could ask for. It lists senators by state and how they are voting, as well as all of their contact information. If your senator is voting yes, please know you can still contact him or her to ask that S1915 get out of committee and on the floor!

    http://www.kaufmanzoning.net/horsemeat/109senators_Ensign_Byrd_vote%5B1%5D.html

    Thank you all!!

    WE BELIEVE!!

Update 655: Well, the rain returned so the morning was cut a little short (a couple of my later mounts were canceled). I did take two of Tim's out back across the fields. The first, Gator Nation, it was his first bit of exercise since he ran over the weekend. He seems in good order. For the second, I nearly ran into the local hunt (foxes have no need to worry, the hounds are fat, and instructed not to kill I guess). In fact the local hunt feed the foxes in the winter time. I guess hearing the hounds speak is a signal that the fall is closing in on us.

A nice article on Lost in the Fog that also notes Barbaro: A grueling race for survival: Sprint champ Lost in the Fog now competing against cancer, the following is an excerpt:

Greg Gilchrist, who trains Lost in the Fog, knows the star of his stable will never again answer the call to the post, because he is in the race of his life, for his life.

"He's a warrior, and this is a race he really needs to win right here," said Gilchrist.

While Barbaro is strong enough to leave his stall to graze, Lost in the Fog recently began what most human cancer patients dread - chemotherapy treatments.

"He received his first one last Thursday and will need at least six more rounds of chemo," said Dr. Gary Magdesian, a member of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at University of California at Davis.

Update 654: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (thursday night). I just saw Michael Matz coming back from their second set. The rain seems to have eased off which meant a pretty busy (chaotic) first set on the woodchip track. My second set, I was jogging Chappy around the dirt track and saw two deer butting heads on the other side of the quarter pole. It would have been pretty cool to watch if I wasn't on a two-year old !
    updated friday 7:45am

Update 653: Now that Michael Matz has returned to Fair Hill I am hoping the update for Barbaro will be back to an earlier time this morning. As we wait I thought I would alert you to this generous offer posted to the discussion board: IN HONOR OF BARBARO RESCUE CHALLENGE. One of our site regulars has made a wonderful matching offer for Miracle Horse Rescue.

###oooh, Alex, re anonymous 'Fan' request for funds, beginning of group, etc. What a fascinating study of the politics of Language, mounted on your site. Too busy to keep tabs, myself, but others shall, I'm sure! I continue to believe (and even more so since referring to the highlighted note) that 'Fan[s]' has the sound of slamming-into-buildings and the like, but perhaps it can be more innocent, and/or even -good (to wit, the group mentioned, as conceived). I do find it interesting that as a word, it continues to have (specifically in its context here, but may just lend itself to such) the feeling of the *inclination* toward anonymity, whereas, "Friend", certainly less so, but this is my interest, and others may neither see nor intend it. Good luck. †KAWilson

Whoever the generous donor is (who will match donations on Miracle Horse Rescue) - God Bless YOU! Even though I donated last weekend, that was an offer I couldn't refuse and donated again.

    Alex,
Again - thanks so much for the FAQ, which helps all of us become more educated.

What a wonderful idea of the above fund!

Wanted to relay to folks that Mr. Reed Hillman (Lt. Gov. candidate in MA who is a personal family friend) has taken (and sent) some videos along with an article regarding this site to "the proper investigators". After speaking with him last night, he feels graphic details about horse slaughter is the ONLY way to get through politicians who are against this bill as they seem to feel what is going on is humane. Obviously, it is not, perhaps with the horrific details, minds can be changed.....I also told him about SALVATION. He too thought a picture of this colt, tagged would speak volumes regarding the thoughts that these horses are old, unwanted, unhealthy, etc....

I thought is respectful to mention that Mr. Reed Hillman is running for Lt. Governor in the November elections in MA which means he obviously has MUCH on his plate to tackle in regards to this, yet this man has gone above and beyond to help us with this horse slaughter situation. His wife has horses so I am sure there is a personal level to his fight as well, however, I give him honorable credit for all he has done and is doing for the bills as well as for this site and Fans of Barbaro....

In light of all of the sad news, here's some happy news. I heard from Micky's vet last night. Aside from having a "curious" physiology (it seems that all of his internal makeup is shifted oddly to the left, including his spine) preliminary reports are good! His blood work came back "remarkably unremarkable" and aside from a UTI that we're treating with ridiculously expensive antibiotics, nothing bad was found. The x-ray of his heart indicated that things look ok. The EKG will be read today, so I cannot say that we're all the way done with this until I hear from the cardiologist, but this was relieving initial news for me.

Thanks to everyone for thinking of us.

    Happy Friday Bobby!

What a wonderful gesture by the matching donor. How can any horse lover say "nay" to it!!!!!

Thank you Alex for another opportunity to help horses through TWR.

May you be brushed and pampered today Barbaro and may baskets of carrots and other goodies be waiting for you.

    Rest and grow strong Fog.

I spent the whole night reading Ruffian,Burning from the Start. What a great behind the scenes story of racing: the good, the bad, the ugly, and of course, that beautiful filly. I hope I will be able to read the whole book. I dread the ending.

I'm still smiling when I think of Mike, barefoot in the grass. Great pictures!!!

Alex--Thanks so much for bringing everyone's attention to the matching funds for Miracle Horse Rescue. I saw it on the message boards last night and think the generosity of this person is just amazing. My check is going out today! FOB raised well over $11,000 for the Barbaro Fund. Let's see how many horses we can help Miracle Horse Rescue save from slaughter!!

I feel so close to Mike Rea and his family after viewing his birthday photos last night. So heartwarming! I'm anxious to see the photo of his "wall of cards"!

I am so happy for Barbaro's continued recovery, and that Fog has a chance for some happy months or years ahead.

This board is helping to spread awareness, and that is the single most potent method of bringing about change. We are all writing letters, sending contributions. Barbaro's legacy is far reaching. Sadly, graphic is what gets attention from those who are unaware or barely aware of abuse. It's human nature. For me, the best thing is to focus on the positives, send money and send letters. And to make people aware. I can do that in my small corner of the newspaper world. That way, attitudes change.

I know for me that if I stayed focused on the negatives, I'd be so depressed I couldn't go out and do anything. But yes, we have to acknowledge these things exist. Then I hug my dog and cat and go on.

I'm trying to follow Barbaro's example. I think all of the readers of this board are doing that, and doing a wonderful job. I love Dr. Richardson's description of him; "I can deal." I hope you go on dealing for a long, long time, Barbaro.

Best of luck and prayers to Mary L., to Erin, to Fog, to the little colt, and to all those in need who simply want a chance to live and do what they do best.

Wow, so much emotion here last night. It's a bit overwhelming.

I will donate to Miracle Rescue--thank you to that Special Donor! Wow.

In the Senate right now, they are wrangling over what constitutes "torture" for humans. Surely, any human can see for themselves what constitutes inhumane, barbaric treatment of horses. Maybe our cause has more of a chance...

Dear sweet Barbaro, what an inspiration you are. I'll love you even if you DO turn orange from too many carrots! Hope you can get outside and chow down on some tasty grass today.

Foggy, dear one, I pray you are healing. You must be strong. We are all here for you.

WAY TO HELP THE WILD ANIMAL SANCTUARY AND GET RARE RACING COLLECTABLES:

    Hi Chris,

I have a gentleman that has collected unique and rare horse race programs from all of the famous races (like Seattle Slew, Affirmed, etc…) for many decades – and has an amazing amount of collectible things he wants to donate to us. In any case, it’s great news – yet we would need a good way to utilize these unique items so that it benefits the animals here. I thought of you (and all of the Barbaro fans) as a possible way to help – by possibly listing a special offer for the fans. We could maybe host a Barbaro Party (on a web site) where everyone who comes to the party (virtually on-line) and makes a donation for the Lions, Tigers & Bears of lets say $10 would get a chance to win one of the many amazing collections. The guy has everything from very expensive framed collections (I’ve attached a photo of one of the framed collector’s pieces) to individual racing programs for hundreds of famous races, horses, jockeys, etc…

That way, just about every person that makes a donation would get something valuable back. Some might win the amazing triple crown collector frames… and hundreds of others could win racing programs that are very rare or unique. This is just an idea of how to make this unique donation work for the animals – as the only other way is to list the entire collection on Ebay or something. I just thought this might be a great connection to Barbaro’s fans.. What do you think?

    Chris,

I've e-mailed ESPN a couple of times, but the only address I have is their general "contact us" one on their website. They did a really effective story on the slaughter of former racing thoroughbreds after Ferdinand was killed so I thought the fact that a bill was in play would be a natural fit for them. I haven't received any response (and I didn't expect one, because I have no inside contacts).

Good morning, Beautiful Barbaro: ACN -- my three favorite words. Hope you will be able to go outside today for some Barbaro-picked grass. It's gray and gloomy this morning in Colorado. Rest well, continue healing and know I am with you every single step of the way. You are an unfolding miracle and have given us such purpose and joy. Thank you, brilliant, brave soul. I love you.

Alex: are you buckled up? LOL Love your deer description this morning; we have lots of deer traversing our land and have witnessed several bucks head-butting while the ladies stand back in a group observing this ritual. Never a dull moment in nature -- and isn't it all quite wonderful?

Will send check this AM to MHR; thanks to the "Fan of Barbaro" who is offering matching funds for our equine friends. Truly amazing all that is coming forth as a result of our beloved boy, Mr. Barbaro Jackson Himself.

Mike, Erin, you are in my thoughts and prayers -- always.

Foggy: I love you and am sending postive thoughts and healing wishes your way. The Barbaro Effect is all over you as we have plenty of love to share.

Alie, Rachel & Family at Kennett Florist: THANK YOU for all you are and all you do. I am sending another check for the Barbaro Kitty (as it were - LOL) to keep our boy in carrots.

Sheila: Kudos to your company! During a lunch yesterday with our "big fish" here, there was mention of purchasing a racehorse so employees could purchase shares, however, the talk turned to perhaps purchasing/rescuing one of these horses from slaughter and keeping it in Kentucky at one of the "Big Fish"s farm. I thought that would be wonderful. Of course, they still want to do the racehorse purchase!

I get chills every time he rounds the final turn and I hear them say "and here comes Barbaro, the undefeated Barbaro". It's still so impressive. I can't believe how he just pulls away from the pack in the final stretch. If anyone else hasn't watched it in a while I recommend you do so.

Barbaro Team:>) I just received an email from one of our New Mexico Senators> I'm not computer "literate" so I don't know how to send it to our comment board.

    Dear Friend:

Thank you for contacting me regarding horse slaughter. I appreciate you taking time to write.

As you may know, on September 7, 2006, the House of Representatiaves passed HR 503 which prohibits the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption. The corresponsing Senate bil to HR 503 is S 1915, The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

Due to the lack of legislative days left this Congress, it is highly unlikely that either of these bills will be considered in the Senate. However, I will be sure to keep your opinions in mind should one of these bills come before the full Senate for consideration.

Again, thank you for writing. I hope you will continue to keep me informed of issues of importance to you and your community.

    Sincerely,
    Jeff Bingaman
    United States Senator

I WAS TOTALLY DEVISTATED TO RECEIVE THIS EMAIL. I wrote back with my reply that we WILL NOT GIVE UP in getting this bill thru the Senate and onto President Bush for signing.

I specified once again that these "horrible" slaughter houses need to be shut down NOW. I also stated that it's a shame that 2 of our Representatives and 2 senators are not dealing with this bill right away. I also specified once again that New Mexico has shelters and/or sanctuaries to house our horses. We are the VOICE for these precious horses that cannot speak for themselves. Heaven help us.

I also stated, again, this question: Senator Bingaman, would you eat your cats or dogs?

Well, Barbaro Team: This is not a good way to start my weekend but I will not give up in trying to save our American Horses.

The early ACN update is a great way to start the day. Tim and Alex, thank you, again.

Barbaro, you are such a good boy. Keep healing and feeling happy.

The "Fan" who is donating to the match-challenge is a true blessing. I am grateful for the opportunity. There is a thread in the Discussion Forum that gives details, and information on how to participate.

It's good to know, that for just $20, (the cost of an extra-large pizza), we can do so much good.

I am sending $30...to catch the match, plus go an extra mile.

Thank you Barbaro, for being a beacon, an icon, and a source of inspiration. All these good things, including the work on legislation etc, is because of you. You are our miracle.

Also, Thank You, FANS OF BARBARO, or whatever you want to call yourselves. The fact is that you are HERE. Even if you never post a comment and simply lurk, and/or are unable to send a dime, your prayers and positive spirit of love are a part of this miracle. You are doing good.
    God love you for it.

Love you, Barbaro! You are too much! Determined to live, determined to get well, determined to enjoy life and all the good wishes (and treats) from all your fans. Against all the bad odds, you raised your beautiful, proud head and said, "I'm going to make it!!!" What a champ! Keep those ACN's coming Alex. (Did you know horse liniment is good for human aches and pains, too?) Love your descriptions of the lovely Fair Hill countryside and the wonderful wild critters you see there.

Wonder if anyone caught last night's episode of Animal Planet. A beautiful buckskin gelding had to be euthanized by a Humane Society vet because the neglect he had sustained for too long from his owner, before being rescued, had ruined all four hooves beyond repair. He was in terrible pain. We must contribute to our local rescue organizations, as well, to ensure they have enough staff to do their jobs in a timely, efficient manner and support stiffer penalties for animal abusers in the courts!

I suspected it might be hard for them to take this up before recess. They have some big bills on their plate right now, like a bill regarding The Geneva Convention.

Plus, probably, a lot of hot-button issues (from both sides of the aisle) they need to put up before the election.

Remember how bad things looked at one time for Barbaro. But we just believed even harder. The Senate may not have many days left for voting, so we have to work harder and believe even more. If we all try and contact President Bush, just one phone call from him would put that bill out for a vote. Let's just go to the top with everything we've got.

Posted by: Dale C. / Davis CA at September 15, 2006 3:34 PM

This just makes it very important to make sure that in this election we are very careful for who we vote for. In MO Talent WILL vote NO on this bill. An email today from ASPCA on pending Horse Slaughter Bill in the Senate. Barbaro, look what you've helped do, kiddo!

Americans have long had a love affair with horses, both domestic and wild,” says ASPCA President Ed Sayres. “The recent public and media interest in the recovery of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro is a clear indication of the fascination, awe and empathy we feel for these magnificent animals. The history of our nation is indelibly linked to these great creatures and, with the passage of this bill, we are one step closer to treating horses as we should—as valued members of our humane community.”

A big thank you to all ASPCA News Alert readers who took action on this historic legislation. Originally introduced in 2001, the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act calls for a full and permanent ban on horse slaughter for human consumption. The bill now has to pass the Senate, where a vote is currently pending a vote. If you have not already done so, please visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center, where you can contact your senators and urge them to support S. 1915, the Senate version of this bill.

    "Salvation" the colt

Just hung up from talking to Beth at the Grace Foundation. She said that the baby had looked very peaked yesterday, but that he had a brighter look today. They have brought in a dogey calf who also needs a friend to be with him because they are both so "lonely" her words. They put straw all around in his paddock so that he could be comfy. He is drinking water from a bucket and they gave him iron and other supplements which is starting to help perk him up also. He is eating hay and is beginning to be interested in eating some special foal food which is excellent news.
Beth believes that Salvation WILL make it...and he is going to UC Davis for his leg problem. She
said that it looks like someone had tied something around his legs...it is an old wound.
And, I see that the pictures have arrived which
    she said she had sent.
I have tears in my eyes as I type...I am very, very happy with this upbeat news as I know we all are. Oh, yes she said that there were so many children around the colt and the calf that she had to get some of them back...she said that they will not lack love there....how precious.
Let's work even harder folks at putting these hideous as well as illegal slaughterhouses out of business.

Thank you and God Bless You All.

I think the colt will help a lot! Can't wait to see the little sweetheart.

I was sad and angry to see some jerk writing to our own paper here in Tucson about how he didn't think keeping horses from slaughter was even worth thinking about, comparing them to unborn children, which was worth thinking about. Seems to me he can't hold two ideas in his head at once. This awful paper (which has really gone downhill since Lee Enterprizes bought it) went out of its way to publish a stupid cartoon the other day that was anti our anti-slaughter bill.

When will people realize that just because you want to help animals, does NOT mean you don't want to help people, or address other important issues?

Okay, off soapbox here, but dang, it made me mad!

I told them our story, and asked them to do a human interest story about Fans of Barbaro.

They requested that I e-mail them alitte bite about us and our story (done) also I told them about what good we do, not only for horses but also for people.

Hopefully they will respond and we will get some TV coverage.

To all of you Pittsburgh people, I let them know there were alot from the viewing area.

    Have a good one.

    That's GREAT NEWS about "Salvation."

He will be in our prayers...and his little calf friend too.

Oh, how I hope and pray that they will BOTH live full and happy lives. The colt's name is perfect ! Maybe, just because they are stall-mates, "Salvation" will be the salvation of a little meat-aminal.

What beautiful irony, that this little poster-boy's first act will be to save someone who was actually born to die in slaughter.

What a great story!...it seems that it would be an especially sweet tale to tell our children.
...all in all, pretty good beginning for a little slaughter-tag colt's adventures.

    Good Morning Fans.

Reading the posts here and I suddenly was overwhelmed. It truly is amazing at how many things have happened and will happen because of Big B. I feel badly that he had to be injured for all of us to get together. BUT, and it's a big but, look at how much has happened!!!!!! B. will go down in history not only as a true and valiant racer, but as a leader of peoples as we fight for all of his equine relatives. It is just amazing - no other way to put it.

Foggy darling, hang in ther. Continue to feel our love and prayers. XXXXOOOO

Big B. - You have no idea just what you mean to the world. Or maybe you do??? XXXXOOOO

Alex, thanks for the morning ride update. And thanks for having us all here. ----(hugs)

I will email trainers: Parelli and Clinton Anderson - this weekend - and ask for support.

Don't know IF anyone out there watches RFD-TV - but there are several hours, daily, of horse-related programming - and they are out of Nebraska. Could be a good contact. I will email there also.

ALEX, definite signs of fall when the deer butt heads and the hounds bell. I am very glad to hear your local hunt club is a non-kill organization. Some of the foxes might be your morning companions! Maybe the foxes and hounds can repair to The Whip together for a few Tetleys and some post-hunt story telling.

EXACTLY!!! I get so tired of people who try to send those of us working for animal welfare on a guilt trip as though we don't care about humans? Look at all the love on this site for little Erin Brennan and Mike Rea!

A HUGE majority of prisoners doing time for violent crime got their "start" abusing and killing animals, so working for the good of animal welfare is working for the good of all. Jane Goodall is one bright and shining example of this. Keep up the great work, folks!!

We poor humans have so much to learn.

And, for all of us, it seems to revolve around a sun, of sorts . . . our precious inspiration, Barbaro. Regardless of where we started this journey, we have moved as a unit from curiosity, to concern, to active participation in a marvelous display of humanitarian ideals.

    Hello Everyone,

As many of you may know, Skyler and I have been working on awareness wristbands in honor of Barbaro for quite some time.

As with most legal issues, it has been a very lengthy process to obtain approval to produce these.

With the legislation at hand and the urgency involved in generating support for the Senate bill, we both felt compelled to take a proactive stance to increase awareness of the horse slaughter issue and to assist in funding the rescue facilities who will care for these horses. Time is of the essence and the time to make a stand is upon us all.

Mrs. Jackson's request for help has intensified our belief that we must act now and do whatever we can to prevent another horse from such an unkind, disgusting fate.

After much thought, a new logo was developed and wristbands are being produced at this time. Both Skyler and I have absorbed the costs of these bracelets and will never make a single penny from them. Our only hope is that these bracelets will create a whirlwind of interest on the issue of horse slaughter and generate funds which will help to care for these so called "unwanted" horses.

We have produced a small amount of bracelets. If you would like to receive a bracelet all that we request is that a donation be made to one of the deserving facilities which support rescued horses. Suggestions would be Thoroughbred Charities of America, Miracle Horse Rescue, Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, Re-Run, Canter, etc. The amount of the donation is up to you, whatever you are comfortable with. Please be prepared to provide proof a donation has been made.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to honor every single request, and right now only one wristband per request can be sent. We still hope to obtain the proper approval to actually sell these for charity but until that is accomplished, we only have this supply to offer in honor of your donation and to promote equine awareness. We will also pay for shipping the band to you.

Our love for Barbaro and your friendship and support over these past months has been our driving force. Let's all band together for horses.

    Fans of Barbaro

    Believe in Barbaro

    Ara,

Not sure if someone else is working on it however I have photoshop/etc at home and can put a flyer together if one is not already "in the works" so to speak.

If we want to do that, I could start a post under the horse slaughter section of the forum where we could discuss what we want it to say, etc. Again, if someone else is working on it, that is fine too.

Just offering to put something together if everyone wants that. Let me know what you all think.

Problem is that everything that helps with pain is making her sick!! It will be a miserable few days for our Mary but I'll keep you posted as I hear.

I am in love already. Will he get a home once he is ready or will he stay at the rescue? If I had the appropriate place to put him, I would take him in a minute. He looks so forlorn, like he needs some love and attention. Please God, look after him and all of the others, they are on the right path because you have blessed them.

On the verge of tears here again :( But they are happy tears for the horses that are saved :)

    Ooops, sorry ara, sorry Debbie ;

I thought that ara had contact with Beth, who has "Salvation" and the calf.

My bleery eyes sometimes don't connect correctly with my blurry brain. ( Must be too much time spent staring at the computer and reading the posts too quickly.) I'll slow it down and get it right.

....but I AM excited about the "little ones"...this is just wonderful, no matter WHERE the pictures come from.

Was inspired by earlier post about getting local media attention to this story and sent the following to St. Louis area media:

    To News Organization,

I am writing you to consider airing a story as a follow up to the recently House passed Anti-Slaughter legislation. This legislation is currently awaiting a vote by the Senate before it can become law. In the meantime, up to 90,000 horses per year are sent to foreign-owned slaughter plants for foreign consumption as food.

There is a local connection to this horrible practice, although the plants are not in the St. Louis area. These slaughterhouses obtain their horses at auctions by “killer buyers” who are not always known to the horse’s sellers. One such sale is getting ready to take place next week on September 23 at Fairmount Park.

A local non-profit organization called CanterUsa has a branch in Southern Illinois that rehabilitates retired racehorses for eventual replacement at suitable homes. This organization is in dire need of financial support to purchase some of the horses up for auction next week that might otherwise end up in the hands of the horse killers.

Another potential public interest in this story would be the amazing grass roots efforts taking place by a uniting of citizens across the country who have been following the medical progress of Barbaro, the Kentucky Derby winner whose injury at the Preakness stunned the nation. Since his devastating injury, this group of ordinary people (some like me with no previous horse experience) have come together at timwoolleyracing.com to follow his recovery. This group which calls themselves “Fans of Barbaro” is now becoming involved with passing this legislation and helping rescue these beautiful creatures.

Please check it out! I think our community would love to rally in support of these animals, and would be impressed by the power of ordinary citizens brought together by a wonderful horse named Barbaro, and the selfless time donated by Tim Woolley and Alex Brown, the exercise rider who tirelessly provides updates about Barbaro on the website.

Is it ok if I forward the email content to Mr. Reed Hillman so he can pass this along to his "investigators"????? so they can get the feel of what is really going on and how terribly scared this little healthy, wanted colt was????

I love Lieberman and Dodd!! Two great guys.

    Dear Ms. Antaya:

Thank you for contacting me regarding legislation to amend
the Horse Protection Act. It was good to hear from you.

I strongly support the Animal Welfare Act and similar
measures that strengthen regulations relating to the care,
handling, and treatment of animals. I believe that animals
should not be forced to experience needless pain and suffering
and have worked to advance legislation to protect animals
throughout my tenure in the Senate.

As you know, Senator John Ensign (R-NV) has introduced
S.1915, the Virgie S. Arden American Horse Slaughter Prevention
Act, legislation to prohibit the slaughter of horses in the
United States for human consumption. Specifically, this
legislation prohibits the shipment, transport, possession,
purchase, sale, or donation of horses to be slaughtered for human
consumption. Senate bill 1915 has been referred to Senate
Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and I am
pleased to cosponsor this important bill. On September 7, 2006,
the House of Representatives passed H.R. 503, the House version
of S. 1915. I will be sure to keep your views in mind should
this come before the Senate for a vote.

You may also be interested to the know that the Fiscal Year
2006 Agricultural Appropriations bill contained a provision that
suspends the salaries and expenses incurred by horsemeat
slaughterhouse inspectors, which in effect temporarily suspends
the slaughter of horses for a period of eight months, beginning
in March 2006. This legislation passed the Senate on November 3,
2005 and was signed into law by the President on November 11,
2005. However, in February 2006, officials at the Department of
Agriculture issued a ruling that the inspections are still
mandated by law and announced that the Department will charge
slaughterhouses in order to pay the cost of the inspections,
beginning in March 2006. After the USDA announcement, several
animal rights groups filed for a temporary restraining order in
the US District Court in the District of Columbia.

Thank you again for contacting me. If you would like to
stay in touch with me on this and other issues of importance,
please visit my website at http://dodd.senate.gov and subscribe
to receive my regular e-mail issue alerts. Please do not
hesitate to contact me again if I can help you in any way.

I got this email from Senator Arlen Spector on S1915:

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Byers :

Thank you for contacting me to express your support that I share to protect America 's horses.
You may be pleased to know that in the 109 th Congress (2005-2006), I am diligently working to protect animals by sponsoring crucial animal protection legislation and supporting legislative measures on the Senate floor. The Humane Society of the United States rated my record at 100 percent on their scorecard for the 1st Session of the 109 th Congress.

I supported the Ensign-Byrd Amendment to Fiscal Year 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill that prohibits the use of appropriated funds to pay the salaries or expenses of personnel to inspect horses for slaughter. You will be pleased to know that the House and Senate Conference Committee met to resolve the differences between the two chambers' versions and kept the language previously mentioned in the final conference report. The President signed the FY06 Agriculture Appropriations legislation into law on November 10, 2005. Also, I am a co-sponsor of Senator John Ensign's legislation, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2005. You can be sure that I will continue to address these important issues.

Again, thank you for contacting me about horses in our great nation. Please continue to keep me informed of your views on this or other matters of concern. If you need any additional assistance, please feel free to contact me or visit my website, at http://specter.senate.gov.

    Rescue Me

The sparkle of life has long since left my tired eyes
Years of neglect have brought me here
A steel hand is all that I have felt
The bang of an auction gavel sealed my fate
The huge steel truck stands before me

But a golden ray of sunshine comes upon me
A soft voice whispers in my drooping ears
A gentle hand touches my tired withers
Although I flinch, I do not feel the sting of a whip

Calming words and a soothing voice ease my fears
A halter and lead rope are gently placed on me
Another trailer stands before me now, I am urged to go inside
I struggle with fear and pull back hard on the rope
Awaiting harsh words and whip lashes, I pull harder

But no harsh words hurt my ears
No sting from the whip piercing my skin
I only hear more gentle soothing words
With fear and trepidation, I step into the trailer
My entire body quivers in fear
A huge mound of fresh green hay awaits me

At my destination, I am gently led into an enormous stall with deep, soft bedding
A trough of clear, cool water to drink from
A feed tub with fresh grain awaits me
I peek out of my stall door to a pasture of lush green grass
I wonder to myself, "Is this the Rainbow Bridge?"
The horse in the stall next to me nickers,
    "No, it's an equine rescue."

great news about the Miracle Horse Network challenge, I will also donate

So glad Barbaro had ACN. He is the reason we are all united to take on this slaughter problem. So he is never forgotten even when we are focusing on this problem.

I have been doing some research and have found out some good information. So much is out there and space is limited.

    Great info site is www.thln.com
Texas Humane Legislation Network - horse slaughter

The slaughter of horses for human consumption is ILLEGAL IN TEXAS, foreign owned companies that process horsemeat are using Federal loop holes to continue killing horses - as a result Texas is providing 39.5 million pounds of horse meat to France, Belgium and Japan.

other interesting facts picked up from the site: 86% of Americans say NO to slaughter
    14% say yes

Five Reasons Why Horse Slaughter is an American Disgrace:

    1. End the Corruption: "Special Interest groups are secretly thwarting the will of Congress and the American people. 2004- bill passed the House - Rep Bob Goodlatte held the bill hostage in committe. Could not get to the floor. 2005 Congress attempted to honor the will of the people by adding and amendent to an Ag. Appropriation Bill that was passed by both Houses of Congress making it illegal to use federal funds to inspect the horsemeat, thereby stopping horse slaughter. Now the special interest groups reached out to Rep. Henry Bonilla and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture to help them subvert the amendment".

comment: Special interest groups are our problem

    2. End the Horror - "to equate slaughter with humane euthanasia is dyprocisy"

    3. End the Lies - "horses are brought to slaughter under false pretenses - all deserve a better end".

    4. End the Ignorance - the vast majority of Americans are unware of this horrific practice. Four independent polls, 66-75% of Americans who were unaware of this practice were horrified and disgusted when they learned about it. 89% of the people in Texas didn't know what was going on.

    5. End the Irresponsibility - the decision must be in the hands of the American people. Cntact your Senators and Reps.

From what I can tell the special interest groups are keeping this going. It is illegal in TEXAS to be doing this and they are still doing this because of Federal loop holes (I don't know which ones but someone does) a site I was on said that they (Dallas Crown )has a public relations firm in Washington and they are owned by a Belgian company. I am not sure contacting our Senators is enough when you look at the big picture. Texas Senators are not going to bite bite the hand with deep pockets (of money) that feed them. I think K.B. Hutchinson is on the Ag. Committee. It will take big bucks to fight this, we can prove the majority of the American people are against this practice, and yet our elected officials refuse to end it. It is a no brainer and should not even take this much time with so much on everyones plates ( all the problems everyone has both personal, professional and now ethical things happening in our own country that are hard to deal with, we are almost overwhelmed daily, but we hang in there trying to do the right thing.) Our elected officials should be ashamed adding this clearly simple decision to all the other stress we have to deal with.

Another poll site is paid for by T Boone and Madeline Pickens (to stop horse slaughter) www.endhorseslaughtering.com/poll

    Also www.horseprotection.org has info.
Sorry for the length but so much info to relay.

    Love and prayers to all

I wasn't trying to be tacky about the pictures.
In fact, thank you so much for the ones you sent to me. I have already said above, somewhere, that I am fairly well computer illiterate and if it were left to me none of us would ever see the
pictures...and that's why when Beth mentioned to
me about sending the pictures, I told her she needed to keep on dealing with whomever she was dealing with about them...

I appreciate all that you are doing in getting them to us and I am also hoping that someone will come up with a plan to get them in flyer form so that we can pass them out to EVERYONE. I believe

I'll tell you where I see it.

Look at the second picture. It shows the tag up close. On the tag are markings. The first marking, on the left is a column of blue rectangles, then to the right are numbers, then right of that a thin line, then another column of blue rectangles.

If you look at the first blue column on the left, and follow thst line down, the flat part of the nailhead sticking up, is in line with where the bottom of that column would lead.

I hope that makes sense to you. What do you think? Do you see it?

I was afraid that I was seeming too freaked out over an "imaginary "rump-nail. ( one of those 60's flash- back things maybe.)

All of us get so perplexed as to how people can partake in this "business". I think it is due to their ability to detach - mentally - from the situation. Part of my training in nursing school (geriatric), was how to identify abused patients. I DO NOT want to offend anyone here, but when abuse occurs it is USUALLY a male family member. The reason being is that SOME males are able to detach very quickly, hence, the father or mother may be at risk, ESPECIALLY if money/inheritance is involved. Those of us that cannot detach from this horror are here right now, trying to deal with it all.

Forgive me if I offended anyone. That was not my purpose. Yesterdays' posts were upsetting to us all and we can't understand how people can do this. Detaching may explain it.

    SALVATION
Just hung up again from talking with Beth at Grace
Foundation...The tags are attached with DEEP glue,
which will wear off in time. I suggested that they could snip it off carefully, as ripping it off would cause pain. The are having an open house tonight and they WANT everyone to see the tag to impress upon them that this baby is only living by the grace of God. Salvation has just been given some more supplements...she said he is
MUCH perkier than yesterday...and then he was
very drawn down when he first got there, but his
tummy looks fuller today....and as we spoke, Salvation, was EATING his foal food!!!!

The calf's name is Benny and she has told the
children that we have been calling him Salvation,
which it seems to me is going to "stick".
Everything look up...isn't it just wonderful.

I just fiddled around with Salvation's picture and put it into a Word document, then added some copy at the top.

It doesn't print out well enough in B/W to really show him clearly (I want THEM to see the tag!)

I don't even have a clue how to post it here. I am sure with so much talent here others can/will do much better. I just wanted to play with it...

If anyone can tell me what to do next, please e me at
    jfieberts@charter.net

    Here's the copy:

THOSE WHO APPROVE THE SLAUGHTER OF AMERICAN HORSES CLAIM THAT ONLY OLD, UNWANTED ANIMALS ARE KILLED.

This photo shows a TWO-MONTH-OLD baby that was rescued from slaughter in California. He is wearing a slaughter tag.

The bolt designed to "humanely euthanize" him would miss his small head, meaning he would be killed in some other horrible way by someone employed by foreign blood money to carry out this evil in an ILLEGAL operation that is carried out in 3 states.

For the sake of conscience, put an end to this practice NOW.

Please do all you can to get S.1915 directly onto the floor of the Senate for an immediate vote. It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes of the time left in this current session to pass it, and it would be the right, nonpartisan, American thing to do. Thank you.

(The idea would be to send it as a fax by adding TO: and FROM: at the top. Short and sweet. I don't really know about the bolt thing, but it stands to reason it's located in one place and can't be adjusted for someone so small)

HELP? Anyone know how to take this further? I'll post it on the forum, too.

Posted by: Jane in CT at September 15, 2006 6:45 PM

Most commonly, cows and hogs have ear tags for identification by their owners. they only know them by their numbers. Those tags stay on them unitl they die. They are put on with tag guns. kind of like ear piercing. Hip #s can be put on several ways, usually by the sale barn they go through. By sticker or with paint that doesnt rub off. Either one is hard to remove. Jen

Posted by: Jen at September 15, 2006 6:46 PM

Ara & Beth: Then thank you for the info! I was actually curious about the tags. Have seen farm animals tagged and branded, but never slaughter horses. I only found the info. on line. I would assume they have various ways to do it. Nice of them to use GLUE on the little helpless colt before he goes for slaughter - geesh...

    PMU adoptions

I am a quiet reader of this site, from California. For the other California readers in particular, I just wanted to share this website I have found, for Canyon Creek Farm in Acton (near Palmdale, Southern CA). This apparently started out as a training facility, but the women who run it had done so many horse rescues that they have now changed the mission. They have nonprofit status, and a large part of their focus is rescuing PMU mares and foals from Canada. Do check out their website. It is really interesting, and well worth a look if you have the werewithal to commit to adopting a horse.

    J.Carson Black,

I could put it on a postcard - I have some graphics programs at home that I could do it on, and also, it's pretty much what I went to school for (even though I can't seem to find work in the field ;) ). I'd just have to know what we would want on the non-picture side/a caption.

Also, if we wanted a flyer too I could do that (as per my earlier post).

The only thing that would pose any issues is how to mass produce them (I could go to Kinko's I'd imagine though)

You have a good day, babycakes! Eat goodies, maybe go out and graze, if the weather is nice.

I too just got through the list and lo and behold, both of Nebraska's senators are ON BOARD! Super news seeing how our representatives all voted NO.

This is a copy of the response I got back from Ben Nelson, who is on the committee.

    Dear Linda:

Thank you for contacting me regarding proposals to ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption. I appreciated hearing your thoughts on this matter.

How to handle the tens of thousands of elderly and unwanted horses is an emotionally charged issue. While horses are not raised for consumption in the United States, processing is often seen as the most viable method for the disposition of horses who are infirm or no longer serviceable. However, I appreciate your concerns that this is not a humane option, and America should not slaughter its horses for the dinner plates of Europe and Asia. The Horse
Slaughter Prevention Act, S. 1915, has been introduced to permanently prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption. This legislation has been referred to the Senate
Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, of which I am a member. I will keep your thoughts in mind as we proceed with
    our work in the Committee.

Thank you again for contacting me with your comments. The legislative process will only work with the input of concerned citizens, and I encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts
    and ideas.

    Sincerely,

    Ben Nelson
    U.S. Senator

I have now sent him the picture and story of Salvation, so we'll see what happens!

    SALVATION AND BENNY

The following message was sent to you by ADOPTAK9 while viewing
    your Member Profile:

I just signed up on this message board, so I'm just figuring out how things work. My friend and I brought Benny to The Grace Foundation yesterday. Benny is a one-month-old orphaned calf that is the
injured colt's new roommate. Beth said the colt was whinnying for Benny when he couldn't see him this morning. I think Benny was actually hoping the colt was his mama. Since Benny is being bottle
fed, hopefully this will help the colt to bottle feed as well.

If you want, I can e-mail you some cute pics of the two of them together.

Beth also said that tomorrow at The Grace Foundation's Open House, they are going to have a contest to name the colt. They are going to ask for $5 donations for each name suggestion.

    Patty

    ==================================================
Just received this e-mail, and am passing it right
along to you all. Sounds like Salvation may be
getting a new name...but he is always going to be
Salvation as far as I am concerned. And more
important than his name is the fact that he is
being very lovingly cared for, and in the end,
    that's all that matters. Right!!!

This is Annie from KF. I want to thank you all so much for all the cards, gifts, prayers and good energy...and for the money sent to Erin's trust account that Alie set up. I can't tell you much it means to me to know you all are there and praying so hard. Please pray hard and pray often. I believe that her doctors are awesome and they may get her to the "odds" and even more than the "odds"...but I am sure that the prayers and love she is receiving will get her to destruction of the tumor and full recovery.
Thanks are not enough. All my love

Also, wanted to repost the link for Senators that Mrs Jackson sent. Fans of Barbaro Unite. S1915 Passes Senate... sorry was thinking about the headlines.

Well I got brave and finally sent my letters to my Senators. Happily both Senators from CA are voting Yes to end horse slaughter. But I'm going to paste a copy here so you guys can see what I wrote.

    Dear Senator Feinstein:

I know you are voting to ban all horse slaughter (S1915). I am writing you to ask that you help get this bill to floor bypassing all committees as soon as possible.

Horses are dying everyday. Horrible cruel deaths that no animal should be forced to endure. Horses are domesticated animals that rely on us for food, water and shelter. Some are family "pets". Some are used on ranches, racetracks and other activities. All have endured man on their backs--regardless of what kind of mood they're in.

Horses are not bred for being part of the food chain. Yet we allow foreign companies to operate in this country killing and murdering domesticated animals. These companies pay hardly any tax (they did pay 5 dollars in taxes last year).

Horses are stolen from loving homes and sent to slaughter. Kill buyers go to auctions buying and buying animals. Those are then sent to slaughter. Slaughter houses say it's only the old and infirmed horses that are sent. Yet there are many many reports that indicate this is not the case.

This horrible practice needs to be stopped once and for all. I won't go into the gruesome details of slaughter--let me just say it's a horrible horrible way to die.

Please help Mrs Jackson (that's Barbaro's human mom--the horse that broke down in the Preakness Stakes this past May) and all the horses that have no voice. They need your voice to tell the rest of the Senators who are currently voting No on this amendment to listen to the voice of reason.

    Thank you for your time.

    A Barbaro Fan

    To all,

Please don't become complacent thinking that because your Senator is on board, he/she will end up voting for this bill.

Harold Ford, Representative from TN was co-sponsor of HR503, but when it came up for vote last week, he voted against the bill. Did he think that since he signed on to co-sponsor, we wouldn't be watching to see how he voted? Who knows why he changed his mind, or who changed his mind. Just keep on these people....

    About angry letters shaming senators...

This might be unpalatable, but Maid M has sworn to make life not worth living if I refuse to post. Her question:

"Any chance -- given that you have right (and the might of Fans of Barbaro on your side) that you can send along the picture of Salvation with a slightly more dispassionate "look at this most interesting photo, are you sure you don't want to reconsider your position..." type message? In this climate people respond to polarizing by polarizing (i.e. you say yes, they say no. End of story.")

I sent the Oprah Winfrey web site information on the bill through congress and hopefully they will bring some attention to the issue. I would watch her show more often if there was an important issue we have. Shows with Tom Cruise jumping on the sofa are not worth the time. Dr. Phil is very monotinous. Hope it works because this would be a very big breakthrought and reach many people.

Yesterday someone mentioned trying to find information about the ownership of those "house of horrors". Has anything been discovered? I think we should also go after the Belgians. Let them know their businesses (slaughterhouses) are NOT welcome in this country. If they'd close them, we'd be more inclined to buy their other products such as chocolate.

The key thing is, how well will that picture come across once it's faxed? When I print it out, in color now, it's kind of light. What we need is a "fax test". Anyone have a fax number they're near and I can fax it to you? Let me know at jfieberts@charter.net

Precious Barbaro:>) Praying to our Father to keep on giving you more comfortable days and nights. Heavenly Father, please hold Barbaro close and protect him Lord. He has become such an inspiration to all of us who love him so much. All that we are doing for our "horsey" friends would never had come about if it wasn"t for Your magnificent creation in this horse named "BARBARO". Thank you Lord Jesus

Lost In The Fog: Praying to our Father for you also that He will hold you near and heal you from those "terrible tumors" that are trying to invade your body. I bet they are having a hard time with all the prayers and vigils that we are sending to Foggy. Praying to our Creator that Foggy will become yet another "Miracle Horse" just like our Barbaro.

Salvation:>) What a beauty you are.....It's hard for me to type because I am crying so....Father, please protect Salvation and his buddy Benny........thank you Jesus for saving Salvation and the other horses from those "evil idiots".......God, if only I had alot of money I would be using it to buy your horses who cannot speak for themselves. God, please continue to help us overcome yet "another mountain" as we go to the Senate to save our "horsey" friends.

Lisa and Skyler:>) Thank you, the bracelets are beautiful....I wish that I could donate at this time but I'm going thru a "real rough" time. I have just become so overwhelmed with alot of negative issues going on in my life. I never have enough monies left over for anything. Maybe someday I'll be able to contribute and get me a bracelet.

I hope we are having a vigil tomorrow for Barbaro, Foggy, Salvation, Erin......

Barbaro Team: I pray you had a much better day than I did today. This anti-slaughter bill has become the most important thing to me right now. I fear for all of our "horsey" friends that we are trying to help. God, with you everything is possible and nothing is impossible. Please Father, help us to get this bill passed ASAP.......our horses are crying out to us to save them. Thanks to our Precious Barbaro.....the battle is on to close these "inhumane slaughter houses".

Ara: That is understandable. They deserve him for rescuing him, and they have been VERY generous with sharing his info. with us. Working with children will be a wonderful thing for that little colt. He will get so much love and affection from children on a daily basis and hopefully lot of CARROTS. I would seriously consider it though. I sent the pictures to Reed Hillman in MA (he and his wife have horses and the room) and asked if he would be interested in rescuing some even if it meant going to good homes in MA. They love horses up there!

I thought he looked like a TB or QH - can't tell.

    EXCELLENT SLAUGHTERHOUSE CLOSING NEWS!!!!!!

There is an article on the website of American Horse Defense Fund that says the city of Kaufman, Tx voted in March 2006 to order Dallas Crown, one of the slaughterhouses in Texas to close by September 30, 2006!! They have been fighting for years to get the "plant" closed, but due to a slow lawsuit, it still remains open. It sounds like only a temporary closing, but horses will be saved while we work on getting S1915 passed in the Senate and signed into law.

    Here is the link

    ahdf.org/html/slaughter06.html

If that doesn't work, just go to ahdf.org - it's pretty easy to find from their home page.

When I asked Beth about where Salvation would go she sounded so definite about his staying there that I didn't pursue it because I thought that I might be overstepping somehow...as you say, she has been nothing but nice to me about the updates,so to speak. We have the space and many, many friends, cow, horse, people, and even a couple of goats...but we became concerned about the trip that Salvation would have to make..in our case from California to Florida..so we thought maybe we should just let it be...the children, and Grace Foundation, I believe will take very good care of him. Beth has convinced me that he will not lack love and care.

I think it would be wonderful, however, if it worked out for everyone concerned, if your Mr. Hillman were able to have him. I'm sure he would have a very good home in MA.

The bottom line is that I know we ALL want to know that he is cared for the way he deserves

    Thank you.

    Good evening everyone,

Interesting article in the new People magazine about the horse slaughter issue. Focuses on Willie Nelson's anti-slaughter position and also tells of a couple of folks (including a Congressman) whose horses were stolen from them and sent to slaughter. Also mentions the recent win in the House. I don't see the article listed on the People website but for those of you with access to the magazine it is pg 229 (Sept 25).

    ATTENTION: ERNIE:

    1. I have not, will not, have opportunity to review well in excess of 1000 comments posted here from September 14-15, 2006.

    2. I did read of Mrs. Jackson's specific request that this "virtual group" be called "Fans of Barbaro" or "Barbaro Fans".

    3. Many, by virtue of comments here and the forum, expressed concern that "Fans of Barbaro" connotates or denotes more frivolous, temporary involvement than "Friends of Barbaro", preferring the latter.

    4. How, then, did you conclude continuing with the name, "Barbaromaniacs", is more appropriate than either?

    5. Do you have reason to believe Mrs. Jackson approves of or is pleased with your plan to deliver to New Bolton Center a new poster bearing the name "Barbaromaniacs"?

    6. If so, please share the source of your information.

I read the post, then did a search on the Ensing-Byrd Agricultural Appropriations Amendment...and all the yes votes did was to stop the flow of money to hire inspectors at the slaughterhouses last year (not insignificant, but WE HAVE LOTS OF WORK TO DO AND VERY LITTLE TIME).
I guess what I'm trying to say is that just because a Senator voted "yes" to cut off those funds does not necessarily translate to a "yes" vote on S1915. The critical thing now, other than getting that bill out of committee where it's been stalled (no pun intended) for almost a year, is to get CO-SPONSORS. If your senators don't have an * after their name, THEY ARE NOT CURRENTLY CO-SPONSORS...and we need a full-court press on those people...particularly those who voted yes for the amendment.
Sorry to seem negative (although I prefer to call it realistic), but I had the idea from some posts that people thought that list was some kind of "pre-vote" commitment to vote for H1915...NOT NECESSARILY...
but the good news is that the Fans of Barbaro can make it happen!!!
    God bless us, everyone!

I posted the updated flyer image into the Salvation Flyer to Fax to Senate thread so it will be there, not the one I said before. I figured no sense making duplicate threads for the same purpose :).

About pictures of Salvation in forum - there is a thread under horse slaughter section for photos of Salvation - we can post them there. Only thing is, the forum limits each of us from posting more than 1000kb (or 1MB) of attachments.

So we'd have to make sure that they are under that size - now I have the photos but some are already there. They are big photos and I can edit them down to a smaller size (but not too small dont worry) and I can email them to a few of you who can post them - I would in a second but I am posting the Salvation flyer images and I already am 1/3 of my quota for them and may have to post one or two more versions of it.

    #########
How to post photos/attachments in general is: You do same process as you would post a message, type it, etc then at the bottom before you press post, you press the "attach" button and from there it will bring up a window. Press "browse", find the folder where your image is (my suggestion is save them to your desktop for ease) select the photo and press "attach". It will attach it, then press "done". Then press "post" to post your message and photo/attachment/whatever :)

Like I said, some already posted photos of him on the board "photos of salvation" so check before you need to post any. I do have the ones Debbie is sending to everyone (she sent them to me earlier - Thank you Debbie by the way! :) )

Sorry this was a long post and sorry for anyone who didn't want this info, but a lot of people asked about it and I just wanted to make the information known :).

Being from the State of Tennessee horses are very much a part of my life. My husband and I have 13 horses that all but one came to us through circumstances beyond their control. The acts of cruelty are beyond understanding. What could any of these animals ever done to receive such abuse? As I have followed this sight I have come to realize we are not alone in our love of these great creatures but one of many. The fight to stop horse slaughter has been long. In the past the abilty to continue this practice has been hidden in the small print. We must remain active and "keep our eye on the ball" so to speak. These animals provide to us enjoyment, assistance to our handicapped, sports, and most of all love and loyalty. They have over the life of this country given us so much. It is important that we speak for those who cannot. Abuse is not limited to only slaughter but comes in so many other forms. Barbaro will hopefully be remembered for not just
his racing ability but through his will to live
so might so many others. The Jacksons have been such people to respect. To see people in their position give of their heart on behalf of one of Gods creatures has been a gift to so much and so many. I would like each person that has shared in the post to this sight to know that at least at my house it and they have made a difference. Miracles do exist. From such a terrible accident so much good has come.To Alex a special thank-you. To Barbaro and the Jacksons thank-you seems not enough.

Debbie, after seeing the photos of Salvation and little Benny, it's hard not to tear up. Most of the tears are from happiness, that these two special souls have found each other. I can't believe that anyone could vote to kill these animals if they saw the two of them, their personalities clear, in this series of photos. Tears are running down my face as I write this. Thanks to the wonderful people at the Grace Foundation, and at all the rescue organizations, for their pure goodness. And seeing these two, I know their love has been rewarded a thousandfold, just by being with them.

It just occurred to me: LARRY KING!!!! Larry King is a horseracing NUT. If Gretchen and Roy could go on Larry King, update Bobby's condition, and show these photos of Salvation and Bobby...

Honest, I think it could be fantastic! Larry King loves race horses. He loves to share the fact, too. If Gretchen and Roy, maybe Dr. Dean and Michael Matz, would go on for a shorter segment, you know, a fifteen-minute segment...

    Nirvana!

Yes, I thought about that. But damn, does it tug at the heart. Benny is such a sweet thing. I think what shot me in the heart was the two of them together. Yes, the cattlemen would really get mad. Of course, the cattlemen are already against this---slippery slope and all that. I'm thinking of a wider audience on Larry King. Soccer moms, ballet moms, pet moms. People who loved Norman in "City Slickers". I'm thinking purely Larry King, I'm not thinking cattlemen at all.

I don't think it would be a problem for Larry King. Sending those photos to some senator from Texas or Oklahoma? Yup, problem. Larry King? Nope.

If Gretchen and Roy could go on, talk about Barbaro, and then talk about the anti-slaughter bill, and we see pictures of these two...

It would bring the house down.

Debbie, re. Salvation - it is a lovely name, but it may have a whole group attached to it. And we don't want just one group. "Salvation" is beautiful and fits him, but "salvation" is also very religious, and it speaks mainly to one religion. As much as I love the name (please, people don't get mad at me for this!) I wonder if another name might be more appropriate, to reach as many people as we can.

    Any ideas?

    Hi fellow Barbaromaniacs/Fans of Barbaro,

I apologize for being behind in the times here, I have been so busy with S1915 that I have been living in my yahoo mailbox.

So glad to see the little guy Salvation rescued.

Thank you Mrs. Jackson for the list of supporters and non supporters.

Could someone please brief me to prayer vigils....are we having one for Bobby and Foggy tomorrow?

I read the article Alex (thanks Alex) posted and I think Foggy needs some more prayers.

Debbie in LA....thanks for the pics...Salvation is quite the charmer....God bless those who saved him.

For those of you who wrote in the Barbaro book I am making online, I think now is a good time to revisit and thank Mrs. Jackson for allowing us all to use Barbaro in our name and also for protecting our little babies. Just a thought!

Boy, did I miss all the info that comes from us here.

Religion: Having faith and prayers is what has helped Barbaro.

I'd say that colt is a BLESSING and certainly a higher power had a hand in his fate....

Salvation is a word in the dictionary. I don't get this, step on toes? This is like trying to take the Pledge of Allegiance out of schools and I don't like someone telling me we cannot use a religious name for this horse because of stepping on toes. Under God is something I will always live with, what I grew up with and I am an American and believe it SHOULD, in fact, exist....if someone does not like it, then go to a country which has never had it and stop trying to CHANGE ours.....sorry, but I am a VERY patriotic individual with a TON of faith and noone will ever take that away from me....

Have you ever thought that those that do not want to be associated with religion are stepping on the toes of us who do??????? Why do we need to cater to others who have no faith?? Barbaro is FAITH....I love the name Salvation. The little colt has been salvaged and saved - how perfect is that??? I thought we voted on this already?

I agree with Deb G. Salvation is the perfect name for the baby. He has been saved...he is Salvation in a nutshell.

Posted by: sharonlynn at September 16, 2006 3:11 AM

I didn't say I was against religion. I have prayed for Bobby, LITF, and everybody else. I said that when you're going out to the whole world, trying to save horses, you might step back and use a slightly less religious name. I was ASKED if it was too religious. Is answering that question to the best of my ability that such a crime? Salvation is a lovely name, agreed. But rightly or wrongly, on national televison (which I'm hoping we can get to), it tags us as one religion, and that is not true. There's more than one religion backing the passage of this bill.

Plus, it was only a suggestion.

I think the better suggestion was that we try to get some national exposure by approaching Larry King. Can we concentrate on that?

We can fight that battle another day.
I thought it was funny in the U.S. House
before they got started they had a prayer.
Kids can't pray in school. But the House can????
Lets not fight now. Pass this bill fight later.
    Save the horses first Okay.

    J. Carson Black: I understand what you are trying to say. I just get heated over the fact, and it runs deep. We fight in war right now due to religion and a complete false use of the Bible for that purpose. Pledge of Allegiance is gone, Under God is preached about, complaints about religion constantly....I will stop here.

I guess my point is: A car SALVAGE yard does not mean they are Christian, saying you want to SALVAGE a couch, old car, furniture and so on does not mean you are Christian. It is a word, used most likely daily to describe THE ACT OF SAVING OR SALVAGING something....

Salvation appropriately suits this horse. I would find it hard to believe if someone would not support this little colt and his near demise given a name which just happens to be mentioned in the Bible. There are lots of things mentioned in the bible. Drinking wine - should we not drink wine because it is mentioned in the Bible and we might step on toes of others who DO NOT BELIEVE IN WHAT WE BELIEVE IN. THIS MESSAGE BOARD HAS BEEN BASED ON BELIEVE IN BARBARO, I BELIEVE, PRAYERS FOR OUR BOY, ETC...IT HAS, IN FACT, BEEN FAITH BASED, POSITIVE and most certainly Barbaro himself is, in fact, a Salvation as well.....he has been saved....
apologies on this topic, but I have lost friends deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan who have died for our freedoms here and all because our enemies (terrorists) feel the BIBLE and KORAN speak of killing over it....

Posted by: Deb G. at September 16, 2006 3:25 AM

If another web site who has no faith and another form of religion who does not believe in this room would like to find a rescued slaughtered horse and name them something unfaith based, then so be it.....but here, I feel we are faith based and Salvation is alive and well....

I am sorry, but if this room were to change the beautiful name of this colt, then we have lost site of our own beliefs and what we stand for and feel strongly about. Changing a name to cater to a Senator is, I feel, cowering. My character causes me to stand strong behind what I believe in. Trying to prove our point by alligning the name of this little colt for religious aspects is just not appropriate. EVERYONE knows and understands what salvation, salvaged and being saved means....

    J. Carson Black. I am sorry if I stepped on your toes or Deb G. I just feel the name fits the reasoning

Posted by: sharonlynn at September 16, 2006 3:43 AM

Posted another version of the Salvation Flyer in the thread on the forums under horse slaughter. Should be sufficient to email or fax, although Jane said it was bit dark. I'd like to see if we could test a few more times as fax machines can be varied in their quality. But as she said, we need to be able to see the tag clearly to get the point across, however sad it was he was or any horse was/is there in the first place.

I don't want to prolong the issue, however about Salvation's name, I feel it fits, however, I also see the other side of it as well. Personally, though, I feel that while the word "salvation" may reference Christianity, however, I don't think that the general public would take offense to that, more so the cirumstances that brought him to needing to be saved. And the topic would be horses, horse slaughter and him when brought up, not necessarily the name he was given.

(I know this is fictional, but Lucky in 101 Dalmations was "lucky" to be alive as he was so small when born)

Salvation was "saved" from horse slaughter. To me, the name fits. Only other name I could think of is Second Chances (which has a nice ring to it)(but the poor guy didn't even get A chance)

But really, the name he has isn't as significant as the fact that he IS alive and IS being taken care of and will be ok. Let us not forget why we are here - Barbaro, our love for him, and the love all animals give us unconditionally no matter what we do to them or put them through.

We're here to be their voice. Let us not argue, but stand together, a unified voice for horses, for animals, and for Barbaro.

You didn't step on my toes, sharonlynn. It is a beautiful name. I was just trying to be honest about how it might come across to some people. I'm the big toe-stepper here. Gonna stick to happy platitudes from here on out.

I did wish someone would consider the idea of Gretchen and Roy going on Larry King to promote the bill and catch people up on Barbaro. But then we got caught up in religion, which kind of proves my point. Perhaps the idea has no merit, but I was hoping for some discussion.

Not to be. So, goodnight Barbaro, and sweet dreams. I hope and pray you continue to get better every day.

And a special prayer for Foggy.

Deb, no one can take your faith away from you. It was given to us all and God's in all of us, no matter if we believe or not. It's our choice to "use" that part of us or not. It's our choice to believe. No one can ever take your faith away from you or your beliefs. I'm Christian myself and I agree with you, however, no one can take our faith from us or the spirit of God that is in us. No one, not ever.

    J. Carson Black: It's not you, it's just the whole offending others theory. I just can't stand it any longer. Our COUNTRY needs to stand up to this and not keep changing our very ethics, standards, culture and beliefs for OTHERS who have come to this country and want us to change for them....ugh

That would be a great idea. Sorry I've been jumping back and forth between here and the forum. I'm sure Larry King would love to have them on. Not sure how to go about making that happen though?

Ryan: Thanks, I needed that. Sorry for the strong posts, I just stand strong behind how I was raised and what I believe in. The OTHERS can go to the moon for all I care and preach to the moon rocks to stop practicing their own religion, whatever that might be, I am sure they will try to change it...We don't preach to them to become christian and we don't go to other countries and try to change their religious practices....good grief, I need some sleep....

Ryan, Alex knows Michael and Michael knows Gretchen. Gretchen is one of the most influential people behind this bill. I don't see what the harm is in asking. Larry King loves horseracing. And who wouldn't want an update on Barbaro? Barbaro's still news.

Everyone, I just wanted to reiterate what I had said before.

We are here for horses and all animals....

We're here to be their voice. Let us not argue, but stand together, a unified voice for horses, for all animals, and for Barbaro.

If we are not unified in our efforts then we will never get this horse slaughter ban passed and we will be no better than we were before we met each other on this board.

Let's keep this about Barbaro and about the love animals give us. Let's love each other, for our animals love us unconditionally. Fighting with each other, we won't get anywhere.

Let's stand together for the sake of Barbaro, LITF, Salvation and the animals that are depending on us to fight for them. For if we don't fight for them, who will?

We're here to be their voice. Let us not argue, but stand together, a unified voice for horses, for all animals, and for Barbaro.

Thanks, Ryan, I agree with you. Thank you for reminding me not to get bent out of shape and to concentrate on what we are here for. So what do you think of us asking Alex (through Michael) to approach Gretchen about this? I think it could work. Especially with photos of the colt and the calf, Salvation and Benny. It would be a powerful statement for our side. I can't imagine better spokespersons than Roy and Gretchen Jackson.

Cindy/Ryan: I'm with ya....just breathing rapidly LOL Ok, I feel better. I am not upset with or arguing with anyone, I was truly just frustrated with the OTHERS (meaning folks who are trying to change our country to disrespect God and our own beliefs) who provoked the mention of changing the name of our little colt. I know Grace Foundation will most likely name him, but we will always have our little Salvation in our hearts :-)

Hope you have a goodnight.....tomorrow is another day of "bombarding" as many as we can to help us save our American Horses.

Why don't we just forget about the committee's, Senate and any one that doesn't want to help us save our horses.

I say we "BLOW UP" these slaughter houses. We get the horses out, close all the doors then "BOOM".....sending them to hell where they belong.

Ok, really going to bed. I enjoy everyone here. Even though there is some bickering at times, everyone is here for common purposes. Barbaro, horse slaughter and wishes well wishes for racehorses, injured horses, sick horses, horses that are racing, etc...this is a GREAT site....bickering will happen, it is normal. I did not consider this bickering or arguing, just a point regarding well, the ability of what I feel is a dark force attempting to take over a light force (not regarding anyone here, just in general in regards to taking away God from those of us who want him) - don't EVEN ask me to elaborate on that. Just how I feel.....

Love to ALL of you....now, I will say some prayers for all who need them.....yup, and NOONE will ever take that away from me....God Bless

Sounds good to me. I totally agree - that would be a good way to get the "message out" so to speak.

Should we start a thread? Email Alex? How would we suggest it to him/them. That's kinda what I was asking in my earlier post.

Deb, I agree that there are some things that we have become too "politically correct" about as a society in general throughout the world even, many issues even other than religion. But no matter what, no one can separate us from our faith and what we believe in, no matter what it is or what law they change or pass. Don't be discouraged.

    JCarsonBlack,

On the message board under Celebrity Contacts, I have posted that I wrote a rather long letter to Larry King about the Barbaro Effect and the H1915 bill and Fans of Barbaro etc. I asked if he could please ask Roy and Gretchen Jackson to come on his show with updates on all these things. Gave him the TWR website to refer to.

I hope something comes of this. If others write to him too, maybe he will realize it is a great human interest story.

We've put contacts and what we're doing on the board, please visit it sometime.

    RE: The Colt--a respectful suggestion

How about we work on getting the picture and info out to the Senate and the public, and work on the slaughter ban, and let the children name the colt, since he is theirs, and they're having the naming contest?

I was really into naming the colt yesterday, but having read that the children are having the contest for their baby, I defer to them.

    SUSAN E.

Your answer to the problem of Salvation's name is the right one. We are very far removed from this baby, not in spirit, but physically. And we can call him Salvation if we want to over here. I,in fact, cannot think of him as anything other than that. And he won't mind at all if we call him
Salvation and the children call him something else.

We DO need to get really busy passing out flyers
to everyone we can find and continue calling our
Senators to be co-sponsors...that's where our energies need to be focused so that more Salvation's can be rescued...that's our
    mandate right now.

And Salvation was a very happy interlude in the
midst of some very ugly business. I am happy tonight thinking of him in his new life.

Our battle is not won and we are fighting heavy
odds. So, for Barbaro, for Salvation, for what is right and decent, contact everyone you know.

    Thank you.

REMINDER: THE COLT'S NAME...not really our call, is it? I read somewhere on the Prospero Forum that the Grace Foundation is going to have a fund-raising contest to name him...a $5. donation for each name submitted. I am so sorry, but now I can't find the message to copy it back here...maybe because I'm too exhausted to be alive LOL

For those interested in horse rescue --- and it seems that most of you are! -- we have a feedlot here in Washington State where horses are brought before being sent to Canada for slaughter. There is a hardworking group of people there who are allowed to post information on these horses in hopes of getting them adopted before they are shipped. It is called Columbia Basin Equine Rescue and here is their website:
    http://www.columbiabasinequinerescue.org/DEF-Home.asp
I have rescued two horses from this feedlot and wish I could bring in more. They have both been loving, delightful companions and so grateful to have been saved.
Seeing the horses posted on this site is a shock to those who think only the old and lame are sent to slaughter---they never think of the pregnant mares or mares with new foals. It is high time this attrocity is ended once and for all.
