    Barbaro Updates:78

    updates are now here.

Update 680: Just spoke to Peter, who visited Barbaro today at lunchtime. He gave him a grooming, and all was well. Peter confirmed Edgar Prado did visit Barbaro today, this morning. Dr. Richardson brought Barbaro outside while Edgar was visiting. This is the fourth time Edgar has visited Barbaro, and again, it appears he did this without any fuss. Very cool.

Update 679: Rachel from Kennett Florist left this comment (timestamp 7:08pm):

    Hello to All,

Just got back from NBC. We brought a big ole basket for the donor horses as well as lots of goodies for Barbaro, and a few snacks for the staff. The donor horse "Mom" was VERY appreciative as always. You all are wonderful.

Word is that Edgar had been to visit Barbaro and was able to get outside with him. A very happy day for both I'm sure.

    Rachel at Kennett Florist

And now for a more uplifting video clip on the Fog, during his racing career: Happier Times - Good Memory. Its an interview with Russell Baze, outside the Fog's stall the day before one of his big races. Very cool. Russell did give us an interview when it was first announced the Fog had cancer, coincidentally when Russell had just ridden seven winners from seven mounts.

Update 678: Another moving tribute to Lost in the Fog: Lost in the Fog: A Champion Remembered, posted in the comments by Alex Fleming (timestamp: 6:38pm). When looking at this tribute you realize how much better the Fog was against his competition. To win sprint races with the ease he won sprint races is exceptional!

Barbara Livingston also e-mailed me that she has updated her Lost in the Fog Gallery.

Update 677: Here is New Bolton's update: Barbaro continues to Improve:

According to veterinarians at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital, Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to gradually improve. "He had an excellent week," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "We replaced the boot on his left hind foot with a bandage because the hoof is doing well."

In addition, Barbaro continues to be comfortable in the cast that has been on his right hind leg for the past three weeks. "We won't change it unless there is a reason to do so, and we will continue to monitor his comfort closely before deciding when to replace or remove this cast," said Dr. Richardson. "He is enjoying his daily excursions outside to graze, and his appetite is excellent."

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, September 26, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 676: The Daily Racing Form has this article on Lost in the Fog: Lost in the Fog euthanized. It includes the following quotes of Mr. Aleo, the Fog's owner:

"We did everything we possibly could," a subdued Aleo said from his office on Monday afternoon. "But it's kind of heartbreaking. To have a great horse like that and he never got the chance to pass on his genes. And he never really got a chance to run his best races in his prime."

    and

"He did the right thing by us," Aleo concluded, "and we tried to do what we thought was right by him, always. But there will never be another one like him."

I called up the writer, Glenye Cain (we have corresponded a little over Barbaro over the last month or two), to get her perspective from the interview of Mr. Aleo. This is what Glenye told me:

Mr. Aleo's comments made the story. I do not know Mr. Aleo personally and this was the first time I had talked with him. You can only imagine how difficult it is for a reporter to talk to someone for the first time under such circumstances.

The thing that struck me about Mr. Aleo was his question "I hope we did the right thing?", he still questions whether they did the right thing for the horse, and that is and has been his sole concern. He did not want to allow him to suffer unecessarily. It was very touching. He was very subdued, a little shocked.

It is great that this summer we have seen two sets of connections to two great horses manage their decisions solely in the interest of the horse in question. They provide great examples to all of us.

Glenye also owns a horse, a retired thoroughbred race horse, that at one time in his career was trained by Graham Motion. Emperor Tigere is now a field hunter. Glenye acquired him from the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.

Update 675: I believe Edgar Prado is planning a special visit today. I called his agent who confirmed.

Update 674: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (monday night). I saw Michael Matz as I was walking on to the track with Chappy for my second set. He had just heard from Dr. Richardson. It is an appropriately foggy morning here in Fair Hill and I am jogging my second mile on Chappy as I call in this update from my cell phone.
    updated 7:15am

Update 673: Tributes to Lost in the Fog continue unabated. A couple of examples on the discussion boards: Lost in the Fog: Forvever Running Free and THE LAST BATTLE.

Calder Race Track issued a news release: Farewell to a Champion: Goodbye, Lost in the Fog. The Fog made his final start at Calder. There is a nice picture of him under exercise rider Sue Milne.

Golden Gate Field also issued a news release: CHAMPION LOST IN THE FOG EUTHANIZED. The following are two excerpts:

Gilchrist said it was tough to say goodbye to Lost in the Fog.

"It was very emotional," said Gilchrist. "I probably won't ever get over it. I always said when it got too bad, Lost in the Fog would let me know. I think he did yesterday (Sunday). If he was a person, he would have said, 'It's time.' That's life and we have to deal with it. People come and go. I'll just see him on the other side."

Gilchrist said Lost in the Fog will be cremated and it's likely his ashes will go to Southern Chase Farm in Florida, where he was raised.

    and

When asked how he would like fans to remember Lost in the Fog, Gilchrist replied, "Just remember him for the great warrior and champion he was."

Golden Gate Fields is planning to honor Lost in the Fog on Saturday, Sept. 30.

Here are the snail mail addresses of Lost in the Fog's connections.

The IN HONOR OF BARBARO RESCUE CHALLENGE has eclipsed $7,000!

Good morning, Barbaro and all Fans of Barbaro,

I just finished catching up on posts from last night and I have a fresh round of tears in my eyes. I know there are those in this world who would not understand a group of people eulogizing a horse they never met or saw race in person. I'm happy to say there are none of those people here! What a group the Fans of Barbaro has become! The talent of this group never ceases to amaze me. It makes getting through the difficult days so much easier. Thank you all for being here.

Hoping for ACN for Barbaro complete with grazing - both outside and in his stall!

Posted by: Anna at September 19, 2006 11:29 AM

Thank goodness for Barbaro's ACN. This morning I don't think I could have taken any more bad news.

Greg's statemnet that he will probably never get over The Fog's death just went straight to my heart. I am so gald that greg was there since he went so fast

Posted by: Mary at September 19, 2006 11:38 AM

they got to spend some good time together before he went. It's heartening to know that he didn't go down on a track in front of a crowd, but at home, where the atmosphere was more condusive to his comfort.

Posted by: Anna at September 19, 2006 11:41 AM

Good morning! So happy to read ACN. I was almost scared to check after yesterday's news. It was a really tough day, but what an amazing group of people that paid tribute to such a great horse. I am truly honored to be a part of it.

Fog will never really be gone - his spirit will live on through those whose lives he's touched.

But today is today, and I am going to focus on moving ahead. We need to regroup and focus on our Barbaro and the fight ahead with the anti slaughter bill. Plus, I just don't think I have any tears left to cry.

Posted by: Sheila at September 19, 2006 11:43 AM

    Good morning everyone,

Well, I finally got my computer going again and then I hear this sad news. I have not had a chance to catch up on the posts, but I echo everyone'sentiments.

Lost in the Fog: When you get to the Rainbow Pastures, look up a pretty little girl named Gallent Secret.....I think you two will have fun together while you wait for your reunions.

Barbaro: Hey Buddy, Gald that you're doing some heavy duty Chillin'. I know that is what is needed for you right now. I think pretty soon they are gonna take that thing off of your leg so you keep being a good boy. Do what the Doctor says.

Off to work, but I hope everyone is hanging in there. Keep doing all the wonderful things you do!

This is an old article (6/21/06) I found last night that I really liked. Thought it might make everyone smile today.

    Barbaro making healthy steps
Signs all positive on road to recovery
    By Sandra McKee
    Sun reporter
    Originally published June 21, 2006
Kennett Square, Pa. // Barbaro lifts his head from the fresh green hay he is eating in the back of his stall in the intensive care unit in the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals. He has heard something, and turns to see who has come to his stall door at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

Gretchen Jackson, who owns the Kentucky Derby winner with her husband, Roy, places her hand on the bars above the door.

    "Come here, baby," she says.

On the way through the hospital, Jackson has been excited. She can't wait to show Barbaro to his visitors, who include Kathee Renger, a friend who found Barbaro's mother La Ville Rouge for the Jacksons, who bought her and bred her to Dynaformer to create the Kentucky Derby winner.

As she leads her guests through the routine of entry - a foot wash outside the building that houses the ICU, and putting on blue paper shoes and a hospital cloak that covers every inch from neck to ankles - she says: "He's beginning to look like he used to. I think he's put on some weight. He looks really good."

And, in fact, as Barbaro approaches his stable door, he does look good.

"Why, he's blooming," says Renger, handing Barbaro a piece of carrot. "I didn't expect to see him looking like this."

If you didn't see the cast covering the lower half of his right rear leg or the "skin rubs" on his left side, irritation from the sling that transported him from stall to surgery to recovery, you'd think you were seeing the old Barbaro - not the one fighting to recover from the broken leg he suffered in the May 20 Preakness Stakes.

In the pictures distributed in the days after his four-plus hours of surgery, Barbaro, though looking better than expected, still showed signs of having been through a major event. He seemed a smaller version of the horse everyone admired as he danced toward the Preakness starting gate, and his ribs seemed more prominent than usual.

But in his stall, Barbaro's ears are pricked. His coat is shiny. His eyes are bright as he anticipates treats. In the course of the next 40 minutes, he will have an array of carrots, apples and peppermints. His ribs, perhaps helped by such a diet, have all but disappeared.

As he is admired, Barbaro shifts his weight to his injured leg and attempts to scratch his belly with his left hind leg.

"I think maybe the skin on his side is itching as it heals," says Gretchen Jackson, watching closely. "You know [trainer] Michael Matz and [assistant trainer] Peter Brett come over here every afternoon to take care of his side. You can see how well it is healing.

"It has just been amazing. People are so kind and care so much. Barbaro certainly isn't forgotten. And I know it takes them a good half hour to come up here to take care of him.

"Look at that," she says, interrupting herself. "Look at the way he moves around to get his food. He's so quick."

    Jackson pauses.

"You know, we were planning to race him his 4-year-old year," she says. "Economically, it would have been stupid. But we were going to run him on the grass. He's such a wonderful horse. You just hate to see him in here."

Around Barbaro's stall are handmade signs from the Jacksons' grandchildren and Matz's children. And there's a get-well card from Paco, the pony that led him to the Pimlico starting gate. They are just a few of the signs, cards and gifts that have arrived for the racehorse that has captured hearts around the country and the world.

Jackson marvels at the way people beyond Barbaro's immediate connections have rallied around him and worry about his recovery. She worries, too.

"I think he's looking at three months or more before he can maybe go someplace else," Jackson says. "We're really scared to ask what can happen."

Dr. Corinne Sweeney, director of the facility, says the main concerns now are laminitis, an infection that can occur in Barbaro's left foot due to overuse, and the healing process. Though the bone is mending, it has to continue to heal before the screws and plates give out because they cannot support the horse.

"But there is no reason to think at this point it won't continue to heal well," Sweeney says.

"We just go week by week," Gretchen Jackson says. "Last week, when they took the cast off, Dr. [Dean] Richardson said the leg didn't look grotesque at all, that it had shape. That was so good to hear ... but the job isn't finished yet."

Just before Jackson left Barbaro yesterday, the exit door beside Barbaro's stall was opened for another horse, and Barbaro was obviously ready to go, too. He came to attention and moved swiftly toward the outdoor light.

When freedom didn't come, he let his irritation be known, bucking and slamming his good hooves and his bad one on his stall floor. Jackson says she was glad to be there to calm him, and talked soothingly to her horse.

"Hey," she says, leaning toward him. "Your breath smells really good, like peppermint."

Barbaro flexes his jaw in a pressure-releasing yawn.

"I take that to mean he's thinking it over," she says.

Posted by: Mary at September 19, 2006 11:47 AM

Good morning to all, Alex ### I'm glad you had foggy weather to ride in this morning. It seems so appropriate and is maybe a fitting salute and goodbye to a great horse.

ACN - Thank God. Our complacency can be quickly shattered when we go through a day like yesterday. If we get too comfortable thinking it is all so normal , life has a way of knocking the breath out of you .

So for ACN I am so grateful and once again I am awake to the realization that Barbaro is achieving miracles. Things can turn around so fast, so fast , that I thank God for the care he is taking for Barbaro, and I realize once again he is a horse being used for higher purposes.

I wish for day to be filled with good moments and warm memories for you all.
Barbaro , I hope you get out to graze today and have a fun old time.

Good morning velvet nose with the peppermint breath!! So glad to hear ACN for you. You're such a smart boy, resting and eating at the same time. Your job right now is to heal thoroughly. So you just keep resting and grazing and eating your carrots and peppermints. Our prayers and love are with you always.

I hope today brings fewer tears to the TWR family. Although Fog's time here on earth was much too short, he was blessed with such a loving family and was able to do what he loved, run like the wind.

Thank you Alex for helping us easily move through the many tributes and articles on LITF.

Healing prayers to all those who need them.

It's time to go back and work even harder to save the horses in the name of Foggy and Barbaro.

Thank you Mrs. Jackson for sharing your baby with us.

    Hi Everyone:
Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious here, but my husband just gave me some info I hadn't thought of, since he speaks with many of our politicians' communications directors on a fairly regular basis. He suggests sending any letters to the LOCAL office of your US Senators, which should be listed in your phone book blue pages. Those of you in more populous states than Nebraska might have to do a little digging, but here in the Cornhusker state, both Nelson and Hagel have offices in Omaha. Sending them locally, they don't get as tied up with the security issues they have in Washington following the anthrax scare. They're read over and bundled as inter-office mail and then expedited to Washington. Also, the less bulk to your mailings the better--a brief letter of a couple of pages will move through much faster.

    Hope this is helpful!
Keep up the great work, everyone and keep the faith.
Believe in miracles and believe in Barbaro!

Please send the Slaughter petition link to everyone you know - we went to a party of about 50 people this weekend and most had not heard about it - Tell them to call or e-mail their Senators too.

Good morning carrots, skritches and bowl of grass skritches to champion Barbaro Jackson, HOF. Keep up the good work.
Good morning thoughts from the foggy and then sunny forest to champion Fog. The Merry Men get the point: Hope you're having a good day, wherever you are.
    Now to other business:
Maid M is on my case to remind that concentating efforts on S1915 -- and making sure that everybody's ducks (horses? ponies?) are in a row would be a fine idea this week, with the additional comment that being pleasant (even if you're thoroughly, legitimately annoyed!) will be more efficient than the alternative. She also feels that it's no mistake that Mrs. Jackson come "on board" to convey her feelings about the responsibility of owning Barbaro, and how he/she/we can make a difference.

    Hello all Barbaro Fans:

I have been taking care of my dad, so I just heard about Foggy. I am crying softly at work. What a true champion and warrior. We'll see you again.

Barbaro, you keep fighting and I'll keep praying.

Thanks to all for the poems, I just can't read them all right now.

Good morning, Handsome. I'm so glad you've had ACN. Now I can begin my day with a positive feeling and hope that your day is even better than your night. You're quite the champion, and it's obvious as each day passes that you have the determination to succeed and the friends and caregivers who support you without question. I love you, Barbaro, and I pray each day for your continued happiness and comfort.

    Be well, Precious Boy.

Glad to hear good reports about Barbaro and hope to continue hearing even better.

Yesterday was a very sad day for everyone linked to “Lost in the Fog” in one way or another. Whether it was his immediate or extended family, it was not easy for many.

Many of us had hope for “Lost in the Fog” and even though we knew he was fighting the worst fight of his life we didn’t want to see anything but for him to win this fight. He didn’t lose; he won the hearts of millions. May he be in peace.

Thank you for bringing everyone together.

Socorro...I've been forwarding the petition link to everyone, and I've had a few surprises where people haven't wanted to sign, and what I don't understand is how people who love horses can think that closing these slaughterhouses could be a bad thing.

Can someone enlighten me as to why horse-lovers could have these mixed emotions? Is it that they're ignorant of what actually happens at these place?

This is what someone sent me today....

" WE " are to blame for this. Overbreeding,
Horse Racing, (don't you love Barbaro ?), Greed............etc.
Once again humans have screwed up the delicate balance of life.
To just stop the killing would be cruel in its own right, I know for a fact there are
tens of thousands of horses out there that would welcome a release from the
emaciation and/or other hideous cruelty that humans have subjected them to........
My friend and I have encountered many over the years,
she personally has several "rescues" in her barn right now,
( ...and I have owned horses in the past too, I love them).
I sent your plea on though, to my friend and her myriad friends in the horse world,
with the hope that some balance and justice may come of the uproar....
To stop all the slaughter would be cruel as "WE" do not have the means
to take care of all these poor horses. "WE" do not even take care of our children properly....and don't forget how well "WE" took care of our Katrina Victims.
It is a very sad situation but it must be looked at calmly and with great foresight.....
the answer will not happen quickly, in the meantime, our hearts ache.

    _______________________________________

She said "tens of thousands of horses out there that would welcome a release from the
emaciation and/or other hideous cruelty that humans have subjected them to"

So a welcome release is subjecting them to the horrors of the slaughterhouse floor so they can be eaten, rather than humane euthansia???

I don't get this way of thinking!

I am so sad about Lost in the Fog, the poem is wonderful, and I know he is running free now! It must of been so hard for Greg, we have had to put some of our dogs to sleep, they become a part of your family and sadly I always kept them too long, but they let me know when it was time. They seem to have a sense. He was a champion, still is. No one can take away his acheivements. His people loved him well, he was blessed to have them.

FROM CANTER IL RE HORSE AUCTION/KILL BUYERS

This is the rest of the emails between me and Keely Morgan yesterday.

    "Susan,

Our representatives will be at the sale on Saturday. We will not be
purchasing any horses this year unless there is an absolutely dire
circumstance due to our current financial situation - donations have
been down this year. For the past 3-4 years, NO horses at this sale
have sold for meat - due to the combined efforts of CANTER & the
blessing of the HBPA (the racing organization that puts on the sale)
to work on this sale with them. We advertise the sale in as many
places as possible with many hours of hard work - all volunteer - to
be certain that there are enough buyers there to keep the prices up
and have had great results for several years now and we certainly
hope that our advertising efforts alone this year will be enough to
be certain that no horses fall through the cracks. If you are
interested in talking more about this sale, you can contact me at
    618-345-4491."

CANTER IL SOUTHERN DISTRICT CAN USE DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEERS FOR THE SEPT. 23 AUCTION. THE EMAIL INFO IS POSTED ON FORUM UNDER ANTI-SLAUGHTER.

On another note entirely, am I the only one who can't picture Bobby eating "while laying down in an upright position?" How does a horse lie down in an upright position?

I keep thinking and hoping someone will explain this, but I got to the bottom of this list of Comments without seeing any.

Barbaro Team:( I finally came to work today.....I was off yesterday but oh, I was just so devastated for The Fog.........Today isn't any better......I was going to call in sick because I am still feeling so sad for Lost in the Fog..........feeling the same way I felt yesterday when I read that he had been euthanized. I can't bring myself to read the posts that Alex put up....I just can't believe that he is gone. I think what hurts me the most is knowing that Lost in the Fog ran the last races so hard even though he had those terrible tumors inside of him........I can't get over the picture I have in my mind of him and Mr. Gilchrist standing by the racetrack. Jo in UK--I totally agree with your thoughts. I, too, was shocked when one of my horse-owning, animal-loving friends told me she doesn't think slaughter should be banned because of abuse and neglect. There are laws in place (not strong EN0UGH laws, granted) for people who abuse animals, and not to sound harsh, but bullets are cheap and a very quick death, if that's the only option. How the cruelty of slaughter can be justified as an attempt to PREVENT cruelty is just beyond me. . .

I just thought of something that is finally making me laugh, instead of cry. You guys were talking about how Barbaro was lying down but upright--my boyfriend's rottweiler mix (named Alex, for Alexandra) eats like that every day---she is THE absolute laziest eater!! I have never seen a dog eat like that. She has done this since she was a puppy, now she is close to 150 lbs. Now, I will pretend when I see her that I am looking at our boy Bobby...LOL She IS AFTER ALL almost as big as him--ya oughta see her feet!!!!!bigger than mine!
Barbaro-you should be happy today Edgar is going to come see you! Do not get too excited though, you are not going to do that thing you used to do "whisper--race" So, be a good Big Ole Boy and mind your nippy manners, maybe he will take you out to graze or something. Have a very frisky, good day!:)

Forms of endearment with names: adding ie or y to the end of a name to show affection. Eastern Europeans use ula or ela. This is not done to diminish respect of a person or animal, it's actually a sign of much love and affection. If we call the Fog - Foggy - it's because we feet a ton of affection and emotion for him. No one here should get insulted by that. In my heart and memory of him he will always be Foggy.

I dedicate this poem to our friend "Lost in the Fog" who just left us, and went home.

    Do not weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
    When you awaken
    in the morning's hush
I am the swift, uplighting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
    I am the soft stars
    that shine at night.
    Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.

Yesterday I asked David Letell to repost the lovely story about how LITF got his name. He reposted it late last night just before a new page started.

I am re-posting it here, as it is a truly wonderful story and one I will remember always remember about The Fog. Thanks David.

    ##

As requested I'm re-posting an updated version of how our friend the "Fog" got his unusual name.

There is an old mexican tale about certain creatures that have the power and ability to
desaparecer, to disappear, vanish and reappear. This story was told about a young colt, who at that time had'nt been weened and was still nameless. When the signal was sent out for the horses to come eat, all showed up but this little colt, the entire crew of stablehands throughly searched the entire meadow, but were unable to find this little lost colt. The crew was at their wits end, when all of a sudden , as if by magic this little colt suddenly appeared of the fog , the stablehands were amazed and believe that this little colt was blessed with supernatural powers and had the ability to desaparecer and was one of gods special creatures, after that incident he was called, and later named, "Lost in the Fog", he went on in his fantastic racing career to win many races and set many track records, last year he easily won the Eclipse Award as the nations top sprinter, which makes me believe that the stablehands may have been right, in their belief that he had supernatural powers, and was one of gods special creatures. So don't worry or grieve today, "Fog" just received a higher calling and went home--- FOTF---Friends of the Fog.

Would like to pass on some important tips on Barbaro from Peter Brette, who worked him out on a daily basis and had the most knowledge about what kind of horse Barbaro was, and why he he was so special.

"He was a bigger, stronger, better athlete than any horse I ever sat on before," said Brette, who resides in New London. "He was so well balanced. He was very intelligent. You would show him things once and he had it down.
"I remember a training session early this year in Florida when another horse came flying by him, and he just took off. It was like driving a Porsche. You put your foot down, and he bumps you right up. That was the sensation. I said something like, "Good God, he's getting stronger and stronger."

On another note entirely, am I the only one who can't picture Bobby eating "while laying down in an upright position?" How does a horse lie down in an upright position?
    _______________

Visualize a dog lying down, paws extended forward
with food bowl between his front legs. That's the same thing, generally, that Barbaro was doing.
It is unusual for a horse, but goes to show just
    how resourceful Barbaro really is.

Alex - I have taken a fancy to the name "Farouche", being of French extraction. It means "wild, untamed, fierce" even "shy, timid". When I was young, we used to refer to feral cats around home as such, when they would run and hide. So I read your write-up on her and then started to wonder: Do you update the write-ups on the different horses in the TWR stable? I see you have a photo of Luke, the stable pony; do you ever post photos of the other horses that you have in training or racing? I hope you have time to read this post!

Didn't think I'd smile yet today. But, oh, you guys, the TV viewing list for Bobby is hysterical. I hardly ever really LOL at the computer, but "Dark Shedrows" did it. With "General Horspital, As the Carrot Turns, and One Life to Trot," I think our boy has just about maxed out his TV time allowance. But it's nice to have a regular routine before going outside to play.

So excited about the Edgar visit coming up today. Where is Sabrina? Pictures are absolutely imperative!!! Also would love one of his highness, reclining with the silver bowl of hand-picked grass. What a visual!

Can someone enlighten me as to why horse-lovers could have these mixed emotions? Is it that they're ignorant of what actually happens at these place?

    Sorry...$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is in the wrong
place. But that is a very big feature
also. I forgot to mention laziness as
    a reason...if one doesn't SEE something
then they don't have to do anything..
All of agriculture is afraid of losing
what's left of private ownership. The
problem is they can't bring themselves
to see that horse slaughter isn't going
to affect private ownership. But, it's
EASIER to buy the lies and do nothing.
    This is a HUGE issue.

    Hello to all --

I am very glad that Bobby is doing so well-- Keep on keeping; and healing!

Every day you are getting better and better in every way. Every minute of every day healing energy and positive thoughts are flowing your way!

Sad to report that the little twelve year old doggie Lady (that had the ruptured discs and was unable to get up on all fours) was euthanized by the elderly couple who were her parents. It seems she was in distress -- continually panting heavily. With the inability to move around her organs would have shut down.

Thank you to all who offered up prayers and healing thoughts for Lady and my friend Marianne and her parents. Now Lady and Foggie are talking about the kind folks at the TWR site that had such good thoughts for them during their ordeals.

About Foggie--- I can't get over it. I am still in shock.

Can somebody please post the DRF article that mentions the interview with Mr. Aleo of which Alex spoke. I am one of those who can never get it to open up on any computer that I use, no matter how many times I log in etc. It is so frustrating!

    Thanks

Anita...I knew nothing about racing before I 'met' Barbaro, but I've got to know lots of horses that I like to keep an eye on, and Michael Matz's horses are included....good luck, No Fair!!

I had taken down the California ones the other day once I found out that was incorrect info. There's only Nevada on there now. And only Nevada has been there since last Thursday or Friday. Not sure what people are referencing. Maybe the old ones. But I had to take them down anyway because of the 1MB size limit per person of attachments stored on the server.

In SPADES it isn't going to be easy.
And that's why I am working day and
night, with the knowledge that I
possess, to do WHATEVER is in my
power to do, to stop ILLEGAL
    slaughterhouses from doing busines
on our soil. Please, never mistake
    my devotion, and single minded
determination to get this done, for
    unkindness or rudeness. In our
    business we understand that things
can't always be "nice". Facts are
usually harsh. And I have made up

Just had a story to kind of lighten some of the heavyness of recent news...

Was up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania over the weekend - drove up in the afternoon, was a nice sunny day saw a lot of horses as well as cows, sheep etc (as it's farm country in PA). Saw some beautiful horses as I was driving as well as some newborn colts. Was nice to see.

The story is - I had driven past where I was supposed to go and there was a corner house. I was turning around at the corner, and, well, to my surprise, I saw two horses right up behind a house. A buggy was a few feet behind them but they weren't tethered from what I could see. It was funny because I'd never seen horses right up alongside what looked to be a garage door and a driveway right next to it. They looked somewhat out of place, yet not bothered by it at all. I had to laugh.

As I am typing this I realize this may be one of those stories that is only funny to the person telling it, but since I took the time to type it, I'm going to post it (at the risk of jokes being sent my way) and I did put the ##### up there so I didn't make you read the whole thing ;) so dont blame me hehe.

Like the idea of the "bronzed boot". Maybe they could do an online auction--after all, one of Secretariat's horse shoe nails that they pulled after he won the Belmont sold for over $6000!

    FIRST THINGS FIRST ....

GREAT NEWS FROM NBC ABOUT THE ANNOINTED ONE ....

I especially love the fact that the left hind is doing so well that they've replaced the boot with something 'less' restrictive!!! GO, BOBBY, GO!!!!

I'd like to thank Alex for posting my poem to Lost in the Fog at the top of yesterday's page, along with Kerrie's. I had no idea it was there until I read someone's post to that effect and then went up to 'take a look'. Again, thank you and I share that moment with everyone here who poured their heartfelt feelings out for The Fog yesterday ...

Finally, for now, J Carson Black you posted this to me and I'm a little confused as to what you're referring to, specifically. If you can tell me if this is regarding a particular post of mine, I'd appreciate knowing which one it is.

    Here is your comment:

Linnie - you sound like Steve Haskin. That was the scenario he was considering. Barbaro as top three-year-old, and should Bernardini win the next two races, the JCGC and the Breeder's Cup - he would win HOY.

Why does LAEL STABLES change the colors on the jocks hat,,,sometimes it's Blue(as with BARBARO) sometimes its white(as with SHOWING UP) and today with NO FAIR it was the green color of their silks.

Any reason they change them on certain horses??

Great news from NBC's update today! Way to go Barbaro!! GROW HOOF GROW!!

The video tribute to The Fog is powerful...and it clearly shows what a kick-butt champion he was. But I gotta say, these video tributes are major tear jerkers.

well Renee, I was lucky , but thats one day I dont want to remember, the last image I have of him is on 3 legs, that why I WILL BE THERE when he out on his own grazing..

I was there at Calder when he won the Tropical Park Derby too, went to Florida just to see him run, to confirm what I knew already. That he'd win the KENTUCKY DERBY..

He was always a man amongst boys,, he was that much better, and he knew it too...

    Just an awesome, awesome specimen..

    SOCORRO

Please believe me when I tell you that
there is a whole agenda regarding not
getting this bill passed. The have
    all kinds of excuses..too early..too
late and on and on and on.

And yes, it will take a MIRACLE

The news from Senator Stevens office is
signalling the death knell of S-1915.
But, it only makes me want to work
harder...and if it is not to be this
year, then we will have to see to it
that it comes up next year. I can't
bear to think of that eventuality, be-
cause of the horses that will be
    needlessly murdered.

I will put your important posting on

Some of the recent posts indicate that the Senate is not going to look at our Bill before recess. This is very upsetting since many have suggested that if it is not heard this session it will be lost. I can't stand the thought that thousands more will suffer from those MURDEROUS hands. How can the Senate not address an issue that has overwhelming support from their constituents? I don't get it!

Does anyone know if Mrs. Jackson has returned to Washington?

Ara, I am getting so tired of hearing the excuses that "it's too late," or "there are more important things for the Senate to deal with." How long will it take them to get this bill passed? It wouldn't take that long, dambit. And when is it EVER the wrong time to do the right thing? Yes, there are a lot of important issues to be considered right now, but that shouldn't stop them from doing their jobs and passing bills that the people want to see passed.

    This is so incredibly frustrating!

Four months... I am still amazed at your strength and courage. You continue to give to all of us. You have a great presence that remains unexplained. To see you gives us comfort and love. You are truly a gift from God.

I offer my poem (again) in loving honor.

    Just Look in His Face!
    (In Honor of Barbaro)

Just look, old souls you see,
Has he been on earth many times before?
    Oh, what wisdom you see.

Just look deep, old souls you see,
His eyes' always are waiting for what is next.
Always remembering from the last race what he needs for the next.

Just look deeper; don't you want to watch those old souls too?
He is watching, grazing, running, healing, and pleasing.
Did you look for that old soul hiding there?

Just look, make it quick, don't miss those old souls resting there,
See an old soul asking to be set free
You want to be inside of that old soul too.

    Just look
    Just look deep
    Just look deeper
    Just look, make it quick

Thanks to all caregivers, including folks at this website, for getting you to this point. My prayers always for the future.

Lord God, wrap S1915 in Divine Love and Divine Order. Open the heart of every member of the Senate to clearly hear the voice of the horse, and feel the Magnificent Spirit of the horse. May each member be immediately compelled to move S1915 to the floor in a right and perfect way, and then vote with their hearts and their conscience for the highest good of all.

    S1915
found some interesting info on the internet and wanted to pass it on
two of the secret deals that the Dallas Crown and Beltex Corp. have does include the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and the deal is that they get $3 dollars for every horse that goes through there plant.
The second deal is with Texa A& M Cooperative Extension and they are given $2. This money is to support the education program on prevention of stolen horse.

WHY ?? Neither one of these need this "butcher money" A&M says it is legal because of an 1997 Ag. code.

This is what ara if referring to. And how many others are there? This is only a small representation of why and how deep this corruption goes. And we as citizens should be outraged. I am sick of this lobbying by deep pockets, while our elected officials, corporations and other special interest groups line their pockets.

Keep fighting for the passage of this bill and lets show them that we are aware of all the secrets. Call the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and tell them to stop or we will boycotte BEEF and call T&M and tell them to get some education grants or government grants or to just use common sense because the killers are not going to check to see if a horse is stolen before it is killed not will it prevent someone from stealing a horse.

I am so glad our Barbaro had his boot replaced with a bandage and that the hoof is growing. Also, that he is still comfortable in the cast. Such a good feeling that he is continuing to do so good. I know he wants to save as many horses as we can.

    ####
ara is right we have to keep working as much as we can, calling, writing, e-mailing everyone, friends and politicians and the bad companies affiliated with the killers to stop. Bombarding all fronts totally. And continue to find the secrets no one wants us to find.

I hope it is ok to post here, I think it reaches more people, I don't have time to go to the forum and many others don't either.

Loved the story of how Lost in the Fog got his name. We were lucky to have had the Fog and his spirit on earth for as long as we did. It is just so hard to let go.

Loved the story with Mrs. Jackson, what a very wise person she seems to be, such depth,
consideration and caring, an inspiration for everyone. How can anything be more honest than loving a horse (horses) or any animal and getting that in return?

Come on everyone get busy !!!! We are doing something so good and right here because of Barbaro, lets make him PROUD !!!!!!!

Where is Sandy K.??????? She was posting great info several days ago. Did they take her hostage to shut her up.
    Sandy K. where are you?

I am still in awe at the Beauty that I witnessed in his stall @ the Training Center in South Florida & 2 Days later, winning the Holy Bull. I like many others, knew we were looking at a Champion of Champions. I wish everyone on this board would call the Photo Office @ Churchill Downs & order the Picture Of Barbaro in the Derby Post Parade, with Edgar rubbing his mane. Best of all pictures, IMO. I just need to say that I couldn't agree more with your approach to S1915 in a manner associated with pleasantness, respect and patience will go much farther than 'forcing' the issue. At least this is how I am. I would not respond positively to anyone who was not listening to my words and respecting the information I am trying to disseminate in a straightforward way.

For example, if I was told that something was not going to take place until a specific timeframe due to reasons which were unknown to me, and the person who told me this is in a place of 'authority' or has the ear of someone in a position of authority, I would interpret that as a helpful 'hint' that their attention is currently being diverted elsewhere. I would be better off 'heeding' these words rather than trying to override or ignore them and take an even harder stance to 'push' my agenda through. If I am being politely told that 'this' isn't happening right now, or not at least until after a certain date, I would regard and respect that completely and I would 'back off' a bit until I could get their attention in a more positive setting. And if I heard this same information from more than one 'person in authority', I would tend to believe it and follow the groundwork that is being set forth right now, understanding that there are other more pressing matters that are being given priority and attention at this time. And I am being told that. Why would I not listen and respect that? Anyway, just my response to your comment.

As far as whether or not the Mets come under the NY umbrella? Well, if you're a Mets fan, which I assume you are because you are a Giants football fan, then let me congratulate you and your team on being the first to clinch a divisional championship. The 'other' New York team's magic number is 3 ... fait au compli as far as I'm concerned.

Now back to that umbrella ... it depends on the size of the umbrella ... if it's one of those great big golf umbrellas, then, yes, it can be 'shared', but if it's one of those fold-up mini umbrellas, sorry to say but "there's no room at the inn" or under the umbrella!! But let's just take it one 'spoke' at a time for now ... there's a long way to go and if there's another "Subway Series" in the offing, then all bets are off and I hope the Mets get soaked!!!

    Cheers!!

AMY ... if I may say something here ...

We all need to understand the beaureacracy of government and how it works, whether we like it or not.

To us, getting S1915 passed right now is Priority #1, but we would be very short-sighted and self-centered to believe that this is the Senate's Priority #1. I watched the news last night for the first time in a long time ... actually it wasn't really the 'news', it was "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" which I love to watch when I remember to watch it.

Anyway, I got my own eyes opened very quickly just watching what is happening today in our government and what the Senate is really having to deal with right now, especially with the advent of mid-term elections right around the corner.

Just trying to be realistic here, and please don't shoot the messenger (me), if you don't like the message, but in light of mid-term elections and what is going on with our government, administration, etc., am I really that naive to think that the Senate is going to focus on the passage of S1915 right now? Sorry, but I don't feel that way, much as I 'hate' to accept it but it is reality right now. Also, if information is filtering down from certain governmental agencies and offices saying this, I can either frustrate myself to the point of complete exhaustion and aggravation, or I can 'listen' to what's being said and respect the voices that are speaking these words. Why would I want to swim upstream with the current right now is downstream?

I have learned the very hard way, believe me, that the more you chase something, the more it runs away, but if you 'allow' it to happen in the right timeframe and with all due diligence and respect for what is really happening in the Senate right now, then victory will be ours, but we may just need to be a little patient, continue our slow and steady progress but 'listen' to the words of advice we are getting from 'those in the know.'

I know people are going to jump all over me and disagree vehemently ... that's their right and their privilege; I am just stating how I feel and what has worked for me in the past.

    ################################################
Ara, I am getting so tired of hearing the excuses that "it's too late," or "there are more important things for the Senate to deal with." How long will it take them to get this bill passed? Great news about Edgar being at NBC!!! I'll bet that put a big smile on Bobby's face. Does it for me :)

So glad for the medical update, too. We can't take anything for granted...

"Wire to Wire" this afternoon opened with about 3-4 mins. of coverage on LITF. It was quite beautiful and moving, and there were some voice clips from Mr. Gilchrist.

Yes, I saw fog this morning as I headed out very early, and thought it appropriate...

A note about the Salvation flyer--yesterday I couldn't even see the thread on the forum, and thought it had been deleted; today it's there. Anyway, a few people were concerned about the wording about humane euthanasia...I just posted in a few places there that I put the phrase about the bolt designed to "humanely euthanize" him... with quotation marks deliberately around those two words because it implies that that's what THEY say it is, but WE know it's anything but. Essentially, I am quoting what THEY say about their horrible "process" (I think that word disgusts me as much as anything, when they talk about "processing" horses!)

So, don't be concerned that we're saying WE think it's humane. We're saying WE know it's not.

Of course, I meant it just as a kick-off and model for whatever anyone wanted to do, so feel free to change as you see fit!

    With the discussion on S1915...

I must add that the excuse that they (the Senate) have more important things to do...was a talking point sent out by the Administration just days before the House debate and passage of the bill...

I know how frustrating it is...between you and me, isn't it amazing how busy they are, but they are recessing early to go home and campaign...

Everyone has brought up some excellent points...
I think the thing to do is to focus...pick a plan and stick to it...I think Mrs. Jackson has given us tremendous advice...

And remember, when you are there alone fighting for this issue...glance at the posts and keep in mind that there are thousands of us for every one person posting...and there is power in numbers...

I am proud of you all...

My interpretation of past conversation is that if it doesn't pass this session it is completely off the table. I've not followed politics so I don't know what is so. Can anyone clarify. Thanks

    HAY, FRIAR ...
Did you hear me use words such as 'give up' or 'surrender' here? I'm a Scorpio, and if I'm guilty of anything it's exactly the opposite ... taking down the ship with me because I REFUSE to give up! I'm only saying to continue doing what we are doing BUT in a polite, civilized, organized way, and not to bombard these people with paper work that is going to be thrown away if it comes in reams and reams and reamsful.

No, the Fat Lady hasn't sung yet, and I'm not saying that 'it's over' at all ... all I saying is, just like Ali, we have to "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" and dance a little "Ali Shuffle" in the mix ... maybe even a little "Rope-A-Dope". We've got to pick our spots and not tire ourselves out in the first round, ya know!! Sometimes "Less is More" ... and Ali proved it over and over not by "comin' at you" like "Smokin' Joe Frazier", but with timing, patience, finesse and smarts. In other words, we've got to "Work SMARTER not HARDER!"

And as far as the umbrella is concerned, if you're a fan of "The Evil Empire", why did you ask about the Mets? Just curious...

It is a known fact that the Texas Cattleman's Association gets $3/hd for each horse. They SAY it is to pay the USDA inspectors since the federal funding stopped paying.

It's also interesting that Dr.Bonnie Beaver, the
"veternarian" that testified against this bill in committee (sure many of your remember her!!)is a professor at Texas A & M. That poor excuse of a vet actually testified that slaughter was humane. I'll never forget that woman....who, by the way, specializes in cats and dogs.

Many special interests have a lot of money invested in NOT getting this passed. That's why we have to go back to our grass roots operation and get the constituents of each state to speak up and be heard.

I agree with Friar Tuck and Linnie. Polite, respectful is the only way. How do you feel when you are attacked? I know that when I am attacked I just get my back up and get defensive.

And, although we are in a hurry to get this done, there ARE many pressing issues in the senate that need to be addressed. Issues that are just as important to other people as this one is to us.

Let us not loose sight of the fact that we must remain respectful and dignified in our fight. I have faith that the organizations that got the bill passed in congress know what they're doing and have a plan.

Again I say, we are the foot soldiers and must gather our strength in numbers and not by being overly agressive or rude to the very people that can make this happen.

    Hi all,

I really don't post much..but I have to respond to the frustration of many (including myself)...our government is
so slow......but maybe "the reason" God allowed Barbaro's injury was to awaken us to the slaughter issue. I never realized people would eat horsemeat. Everyone knows Barbaro's name, he's a celebrity....and it really helps drive home the importance of getting the measure passed.

    ###
    Ryan,

I live in Denver in Lancaster county.. the county is home to puppy mill capital of the USA and the infamous New Holland animal auction. I hope and pray that they don't have any agents there for slaughterhouses. My parents had an agent purchase a palomino pony for me when I was 11 from that very auction. Its hard to stomach the thought that only 15 min away horses could be trucked to slaughterhouses. Something is rotten in paradise.

Cathy, I am not saying that at all, if you're referring to my comments. I have no idea when this is going to get to the floor for a vote ... all I am saying is that it may not happen between now and October 15th ... that doesn't necessarily mean that it won't happen during the current Congressional 109th Session. I never said that and I want to go on record now for those who may be confused by my words.

What I am 'hearing' is that we need to methodically go after our own 2 state senators for co=sponsorship ... if we get more co-sponsors, that, in itself, will push the agenda forward, but we've got to stay focused on that goal ... getting more co-sponsors which could and would get it out of committee and onto the floor for a vote. But without a plurality of co-sponsors, this Bill will not get much attention because it will be 'seen' as "not that important right now" because of a lack of total co-sponsors. It's a numbers game, and if we don't get the numbers up, nothing will happen very soon. So, yes, we DO need to keep contacting our own senators politely and with all due respect; that will get the most leverage and action because they listen to their constituents first and foremost. I can't say this anymore clearly based on what I know and how I interpret the suggestions of others, including Mrs. Jackson. The only way we can bypass committee is to have enough co-sponsors to do that; without the co-sponsors increasing, it will stay mired where it has been.

So, definitely, YES continue with your quest in a organized, polite, orderly manner ... aggression and force do not work as we already know with another ongoing situation today in our country.

Hi Mary: Thank you for finding that great article it really made me cry and smile at the same time. I really needed to read that especially almost three months later how far our Bobby has come since then. The love and care that the Jacksons continue to show for him is truly inspiring and I love hearing about it. There are good horse people in this world and it is good to be reminded of this when other owners are so focused on the business and not on the care and compassion for these magnificent creatures.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to the connections of Fog who are also very good horse people. I know this must be a devastating time for them and I am so sorry for their loss.

I myself own shares in four racehorses in two separate stables. Three of them are with Fantasy Lane Stable. They are a great group of people who put the welfare of all of their horses above all else. I am very proud to be a part of them. The other stable I am associated with is Karakorum Racing. I own shares in one horse with them. I'm not so sure about them yet mainly because I don't get the constant updates that I do with Fantasy. I hear from the head honcho of Fantasy two or three times a day and I know every move that is made with my horses and how they are on a day to day basis. I can't say the same for Karakorum.

Anyway, thank you again for the wonderful update. Lorraine

    Pamela,

They have what is called "unanimous consent". If the bill has more than the majority of co-sponsors (I think 51) they can just put it up to vote by unanimous consent without bringing it to the floor for debate.
If even one senator objects, then it can't pass by unanimous consent and has to go to the floor.

They key here is that, if there are enough co-sponsors, and they KNOW it's going to pass, the senators who are NOT for the bill can save face by just not objecting. It is a great tool for deal making. If it's going to pass anyway, these guys (that oppose) can make their own deals for something else that they are backing.

I hope I explained that okay.

    Hello "fans of Barbaro",

Like many others, I'm delighted at Bobby's good report but still sad about Foggy. I may be able to watch and read all the tributes to him - just not yet - too painful. Several of you have said "how can I be so upset about the passing of a horse I've never met?" Others may not understand, but I sure do and feel the same way.

On to S1915. Along with the other Floridians here, I will respectfully contact Nelson and Martinez again about co-sponsoring. I am also giving out our flyers and asking feed stores to hang them - which they are happy to do.

I brought this up before - isn't there a way we can go after the Belgian Company that owns these slaughterhouses? There has to be a way to find out who they are. ShelleyA said that if they close, they'll be closed for good - no other company will move in to take them over because of the controversy.

The people involved in this legislation for years have had the best legal minds in the world working on getting them closed. They always find a loophole.

Our energy is best spent trying to get this bill passed. That will close them for good....with NO loopholes!!

You have a good group, many people working on this in Florida. That's great!!!

    Update on the colt salvation

Just talked to Beth at Grace Foundation in Folsome CA. Checking on the colt.
His leg doesn’t seam to be hurting him she said he runs and walks on it just fine. She has had her vet to look at it.
And he thinks it has calcified no heat in it! An old rope burn he thinks. Maybe when they branded him. He only holes it up when he is standing.
She is taking him for x-rays later this week at U Davis. If it is broken and healed back.
They won’t do anything. He just will never be ridden. He will be a pet for the children. To love on and play with.
She also said she was cleaning his stall today, and he got out and went visiting the other horses.
The scratch on his little face is from getting kicked as he came off the trailer. But she said it’s a light scratch and much better looking now. He loves to nuzzle people; he was all in her hair and face.
She put a halter on him, and he got very full of him self! Pulling her around the stall.
He is eating very well, on a special diet for babies. He has alfalfa to eat all the time.
He and his friend seam very happy. He is acting like a normal colt of his age.

I ask Beth if she had received any donation sense his arrival. She said no.
I’ll get a check off in the mail in the morning. Special diet and alfalfa is not cheep.

Just thought you may like an update of Salvation

Linnie: We'd have to alter the forest by-laws if you want to start a band of "Whimsical Women" and you'll need a co-sponsor for your bill. Plus, you're up against a bunch of 400+ year olds who think "change" is a nasty word. Dunno...Maybe we should just stick with the US Senate. Whaddya think?

    Cheers,
    Friar Tuck

Posted by: Friar Tuck at September 19, 2006 10:43 PM

Well, Friar, as long as you don't have to alter the forest IN-laws! But I don't like bylaws either ... too much 'red tape' and I don't like to be 'stuck' or held back or muzzled!!

Hmmm... have to think about this one ... but I already have a Co-sponsor for the "Whimsical Women" ... did you really think I would propose this 'bill' WITHOUT one???? O ye of little faith, Friar ... O ye ....

If I'm up against a bunch of 400 year olds, then I'm right in my backyard here in South Florida, if you know what I mean?? And 'they' don't like change either ... that's why they're called "The Condo Commando" ... and talk about by-laws ... you can't even LIFT the book on those!

Stick with the US Senate? With their track record and in the current 'configuration'? Don't think so ...

Besides, your by-laws can't be as convolluted and complicated as either A) the Condo Commando or B) the 'real' Senate or C) that teeny tiny print on the back of a credit card statement that tells you what you need to be 'aware' of but you can't read well enough to figure out or ) all of the above!!

So, I'll take my chances in the Forest with my Co-sponsors who are already 'in place' and 'at the ready' ... just ready to 'join forces' with the Merry Men ...

    Whaddya' you think?

Thanks for the update on Salvation. Nice to have a moment to delight over a success story amid the rest of our business. If i'm not mistaken, wasn't the Grace Foundation going to be included as a donation site for the bracelets?

    Alex,

At Philly Park the color of the cap cover is determined by the fact that they are constantly lost in the jockey's room.

I've given up. Have one nice one I'm saving for a BIG race!! :)

MY LOUD MOUTH FRIEND THAT I WAS TELLING SALLY ABOUT LIVES IN CHICAGO NOW --I SHOULD GO AHEAD AND TELL HER TO KEEP ON IT, RIGHT? OR NOT SO MUCH? I GUESS THEY COULD HAVE CHANGED THEIR MINDS SINCE THAT WAS POSTED. SINCE THERE IS A SLAUGHTER HOUSE IN ILLINOIS AND ALL-- WE DEFINITELY WANT IT CLOSED!!!

Janice - I can not watch the foggy memorial videos - I did watch the interview with his jockey that Alex posted above - and that is all I can watch right now. I was so emotional yesterday that I just can't bear it today. Maybe someday I can watch - but not now. The video of him and his jockey was too funny and I enjoyed it so much that I can't watch anything else for a while.

Hi Debbie LA & Fans of Barbaro,

I also read yesterday that the Grace Foundation has not received donations. For this reason, we have added the Grace Foundation to recommended facilities to donate and receive a free Fans of Barbaro, Band for Horses bracelet.

Please, make a donation (any amount would be appreciated I'm sure) and help this facility and others care for these beautiful animals.

Visit www.bellaregalo.com/band_for_horses.html for all the information on getting a bracelet!

Less than 200 bracelets are left, so hurry :)

    Thanks to all!

Barbaro, our boy, what a great update from New Bolton. We don't mind an gradual improvement, as long as we hear the word improvement. Replacing the boot on your left hind foot with a bandage? This sounds excellent, just take it easy and let that hoof continue to grow. Your right hind leg seems comfortable. Continue to be patient and the cast will be removed before you know it!

Edgar came to visit you today? I bet you enjoyed grazing with Edgar watching you. What a picture to see!! Your buddy Peter groomed you today, as well. Exciting day, Barbaro. So happy for you and that your Dr. R was there as well!!

Just because both of your senators voted yes for the last bill does not mean they will support this one. I don't see them down as co-sponsors.

It does mean that you have a better chance of getting them to co-sponsor so stay on it!!

The Grace Foundation was added last night as a recommended recipient for donations.

I have not had access to email all day (we lost both telephone and internet service at my business), and the computer I am currently working on has limited capabilities (no Word, Excel, etc), so I am unsure if any donations have been made to the Grace Foundation.

We just want to help horses with these bracelets and create awareness for the hs issue.

Hope this clears things up. If you have any questions, feel free to email either myself or Skyler.

    Sally in Key West:(

I share the same feelings about Lost in the Fog.....I was completely devastated when I read that the Fog was gone........I went to work today to keep busy but kept coming to the website to see the update from NBC.....I can't read the posts about him much less see the videos. I ask myself over and over what it is about Lost in the Fog that has me feeling so bad....I think about him running his last races with those "horrible invaders" growing in his beautiful body and start crying all over again because he was doing what he was trained to do......even with the cancer in him.

Good news about our Precious Barbaro. We love him so....I pray constantly that our Father will let him live for many, many years...

Oh, crap.......Got to go get more tissue..........

Such good news sweet Barbaro, you are comfortable in your cast and Dr. R. said you had an excellent week. He hardly ever says that, so it must be true. You got visits from Peter who brushed and polished you and Dr.R took you out to graze. You even had special private moments with your buddy, Edgar. He came a long way to visit you. You deserve all these things and more. You are such a good patient. Keep healing and growing that hoof. Butterfly kisses to you.

I live in Ohio Amish country and you'd be surprised what you hear around town. Sometimes the Amish boys get a little too tipsy at parties and pass out. The horse takes the buggy and them home. At least the horse knows the way. Let's see a car do that!! (It really can be very serious, many accidents between cars and buggies occur with tragic consequences for the horse most of the time. Very sad!) You do get used to seeing buggies in peculiar situations. I like the big fuzzy dice that hang from the rear view mirror of the young boys' buggies!

Quick question for you horsey people...

How big was Lost in the Fog? I know Barbaro was big (17 hands) but Lost in the Fog looks really big and stocky. It seems like his legs are like tree trunks and his rump looks large too. Is he stockier than some of the other thoroughbreds and if so, is that why he had that great speed in the Sprints? Okay that was more than one question...

Barbaro Jackson, great news about you again today and it sounds like you had a very busy and exciting day today. Keep up the good work and try not to get too spoiled. We're all still here praying for you, even though we are sad about Foggy.

Prayers out to Foggy and all of his connections. May God wrap his comforting arms around all of you and hold you tight.

Thankful for all the great news about Barbaro. Please keep healing, we all love you so much. So, wonderful that he is surrounded by love.

Was difficult to sleep last night thinking about the Fog and knowing he deserved better than to end up with cancer. I am SO GLAD they took him home and let him die surrounded by love.

Unable to lurk today, much less post. I'll never catch up on all of today's, but from what I've seen, I have tears. Tears for Fog and the lost pet. Tears of joy for Salvation's report (thank you Deb LA!).

And tears of joy and laughter at Bobby's people here going about our daily business and fighting for horses.

I wish we could have seen Bobby and Edgar out grazing. Edgar's emotions must have been overwhelming him. It speaks volumes about what a wonderful man Edgar is that he did NOT invite the press. Just a man and horse, catching up with one another.

By the way, I'm pretty sure that Bobby speaks Spanish fluently. Just a strong hunch.

The Fog has been tough but "Circle of Life" story - In June, I had to let my beautiful Zoe girl go to sleep after a bout with lymphoma that we werent successful in fighting, just like the Fog ....But tonight, I am waiting for pups from my other girl dog Junie (8 or 9 beautiful boxer pups apparently based on puppy ultrasound) - Of course, she has no interest in her whelping box but much prefers to sit in an armchair and unstuff it as she pants, and circles - Needess to say, let the unstuffing occur....Whatever Junebug wants, Junebug gets at this point in time....Please everyone, good thoughts that the pups come soon - if June cant sleep, she doesnt belive I should sleep - And I want to see these babies - They will never know one minute of life not being totally loved....

Did anyone watch Steve Irwin's memorial, it was so moving. I finally shed all the pent up tears from Barbaro, Fog and Steve. I am worn out.

    Good Evening, Fans of Barbaro!

Just finished watching the Steve Irwin memorial and I am drained from crying...especially when his daughter was reading the eulogy about her Daddy. That did it for me...but it was a beautiful memorial to a beautiful man.

    Good night, all.

    OMG Debbie,
I'm busted!!!! Actually, I haven't even read any posts today, but just scrolled up a little, and read yours...Yes, I'm a lurker...

Got your pics, thank you SO MUCH. Like everyone else, I've been so emotional lately with all that's been going on, but it's so nice to know that Salvation is doing well, and of course, that our boy is too. The NBC report was so comforting.

Have a wonderful night, I'm off to bed so that I can be well-rested for my 22 "kids" (3rd graders!).

Thanks, Debbie, for giving me a shout...I appreciate it!

    Buddy Barbaro,

Sounds like you had a very busy day, champ...First you get your bootie off, then the gentle man Edgar came to take you for a walk. Bet he was pleased at how well you are doing. Can't wait to see pictures. Then Peter came to give you a nice grooming. Wow! You must feel like a million bucks.
You are doing so amazingly well, and I couldn't be happier with the progress you have made. Slow and steady, buddy. Like Dr. Dean said, "you are doing excellent." Music to my ears...as is the
joy I feel every time I see ACN, ACD. Before long you will be at the end of this part of your journey, and will be going home. What a wonderful blessed day that will be, to see you come struttin' out of NBC, head held high, tail swishing, and the road lined with people as far as the eye can see. What a beautiful sight that will be. That is my fervant wish, for you, dear Barbaro. If anyone deserves to have the very best life possible, it is you, buddy. You have endured this struggle with such patience, a calm resolve and sheer determination. You showed every one what the true character of a true champion is. For that, I will always be grateful for the chance to be by your side along the way. Rest well, Majestic Prince, sleep sound and wake up to a beautiful morning and the start of another happy, healthy and healing day.

Dr. Dean and the staff of NBC, thank you for taking such wonderful care of Barbaro. With your expert skill and wisdom, our dear buddy is nearing the clearing in the woods. What a wonderful testament to the care that you have given him.

Heavenly Father, continue to surround Barbaro with your loving, healing light, and keep him safe in your loving arms.

I still can't believe Fog is gone. I was very sad about Steve Irwin's passing, but for some reason Foggy's death has just affected me more. Maybe because of his innocence and the cancer he had to suffer from, I don't know. Doesn't matter what video I watch, I constantly cry and break down. I sure miss that horse. Hi, Genia:( Welcome to the "club".....there are a few of us here that feel just like you do. I have been hurting since yesterday when I read the news about him being gone. Yes, maybe it is the fact that he was courageous and such a warrior doing what he was trained to do. Even when the cancer had already started to invade his beautiful body. I have never hurt like this...He was so young.......maybe tomorrow will be better and I'll start to feel better. In the meantime: Father, please hold us close....we are so distraught about Lost in the Fog.....we know that he was very ill and you did what was best for him. Help us to "Let go and Let God".....

Hi Jeanette, Yes it's been difficult. When I first logged into Tim Wooley's site yesterday at work, I saw Fog's picture, and I thought "Awww, he's so cute." Never could I imagine Alex would report Fog's being euthanized so soon. I think you pinned it right on the nose, his being a warrior making all of us so proud of him, and all of a sudden this devastating disease taking over. and so young.. God, I hate cancer, seems worse when it strikes at a defenseless and beautiful animal. It's just too sad, unbearable right now for me. But he's not suffering anymore, the only great consolation here. But I do miss him and that so adorable blaze down his face. One beautiful racehorse. I'll never forget our Fog.

    Great article from Thoroughbred Times:
"Former Owners Recall Impressive Presence of Lost in the Fog"

    http://thoroughbredtimes.com/todaysnews/newsview.asp?recno=66587&subsec=1

Brief excerpt: The Dodds purchased Lost in the Fog for $48,000 at the 2003 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s August yearling sale from the consignment of their friend, Kelli Mitchell.

"He had a great deal of presence, he was just a stunning horse," said Karen..."He's a horse that it wouldn't have mattered to me who he was sired by. He could have been by somebody I never heard of and we would have bought him anyway. As soon as we both looked at him, it was instant. We both knew."

"It was fate, it was predetermined," Karen said. "I think the Lord wanted us to have that horse, and that horse was supposed to end up with Mr Aleo.

"We were all praying for a miracle," Dodd said. "They've done a tremendous job with him, and even though this is a difficult time for everyone, I think they made the right decision. The horse wasn't just a commodity to them. He was part of their family. He laid it down for them every time, and when it got to be a time of crisis for the horse, I think they did the same for him."

El Dorado Hills, CA--Usually when the slaughter truck arrives back at the feedlot in Fallon, Nevada, it is hauntingly empty. This time it contained a miracle passenger, the sole survivor of the 39 horses taken to slaughter the week before. "This happens very, very rarely," says Shelly, a worker at the feedlot. ”It is one in a million chance.”

The brand inspection performed at the feedlot showed only one brand. When she was unloaded at the slaughterhouse, the workers noticed that she had an additional brand on her front shoulder. Because the initial paperwork did not match, the slaughterhouse was forced to send her back to the feedlot for re-inspection.

But this is only the beginning of this serendipitous story which begins one week ago, Thursday June 15th, when Beth DeCaprio, executive director of the Grace Foundation of Northern California (a non-profit animal rescue organization), received a call about two orphaned foals left behind at a feedlot in Fallon, Nevada after their mothers had been taken to a Canadian slaughterhouse.

The Grace Foundation responded quickly, agreeing to pay the going meat price (55 cents per lb.) to save these un-weaned foals from suffering the same fate as their mothers, a fate they only escaped after the slaughterhouse truck ran out of room.

We then move to today, June 21st –the date set to pick up the foals—when Beth received another call from Shelley; the local veterinarian had an emergency and wasn’t able to perform the Coggins test necessary to transport horses across the state-line. She would have to wait one more day to pick up the baby foals.

Back at the feedlot in Fallon, Nevada, the slaughter truck arrived with its single lucky passenger. As soon as the horse was unloaded from the truck, she ran whinnying to the back of the corrals. “She was going crazy,” recalls Shelly. “It was obvious she was trying to get someone’s attention.”

Then, another worker at the feedlot heard a tiny whinny coming from the other side of the fence where the orphaned foals were being held. The mare who barely escaped the slaughterhouse on a technicality was none other than one of the mothers of the thought-to-be orphaned foals.

"It’s amazing to me all the things that had to happen for this mare and her foal to be reunited," says Beth. "Just think: If the initial papers had noted the second brand, the mare would right now be exported overseas as meat. If the veterinarian had been able to perform the Coggins test, we would have picked up the foals before the truck arrived, and nobody would ever have known that the mare was the foal’s mother. In that case, the mare’s brand would have been re-inspected and she would have been shipped back off to slaughter. So many things had to add up to make this reunion possible that I can’t help but think this was some sort of miracle.”

Facing bad publicity, the owner of the Fallon, Nevada feedlot agreed to sell the mare along with the foals for meat prices to The Grace Foundation, which will have to come up with an additional $750 for the meat price and fees for the mare, on top of the $1300 they have already committed for the babies and another mare and foal they agreed to take.

"We will find a way," Beth says firmly. "This mare survived the slaughterhouse and six days back and forth to Canada to be reunited with her foal. Can you imagine saying we couldn't take her because of the money?"

When the horses are picked up on Friday, they will be taken to The Grace Foundation ranch where they will join forty-four other horses, all victims of abuse and neglect. Their journey will not end there. Eventually they will join the equine team of healers and will spend their lives working with disadvantaged and emotionally and physically challenged kids.

"Their lives will have purpose," Beth says. "One day this mare will make an impact on a child's life and we will fully understand the reason she was spared.”

I cannot stop crying, I was giving up last night, swore I couldn't come back here for a few days. Even though I knew Foggy lost his fight, it became reality when I was saying my usual goodnight to the boys. He was so young and he pushed along and tried his hardest to fight. May God bless us all and keep everyone safe tonight and from now on. Praying has done me alot of good over my life, but it seems I have prayed more often and more diligently having a group to help me. I used to be affiliated with the Jehovahs Witnesses(that is the religion I was raised as) I do not attend now. I do read the bible and I definitely do BELIEVE in God and his Love. I am sorry if I offend anyone by this outpouring of myself. I apologize to all of you. I just know that you have to believe in a Gracious Glorious God, if all you have to do is look at a tree-or anything-humans,horses--magnificent works of GOD. No other "thing" could bring forth this beauty upon us. Anyway, Having faith and hope has gotten me this far, and I think it has gotten our Bobby out of some pretty wicked jams too, with God on our side WE CANNOT LOSE THIS FIGHT!!

Today, Barbaro, had a visitor, Edgar Prado who rode Barbaro in the Derby victory, Edgar, got to assist in his outside grazing, Edgar, who was making his fourth visit to see Barbaro said, he was the finest horse he'd ever ridden. Trainer Bob Baffert, said "Sinister Minister got cooked on the lead," "Point Determined didn't run his race. Bob and John had a really rough trip and didn't get to do his thing. We weren't going to beat (Barbaro). He was just awesome."
So maybe Edgar was right. [today is the 20th of Sept which is exactly 4 months since his accident]

It won't be very long before I can post this happy
story, we have been patiently waiting for this
    day to arrive.

    This could happen,
An Equine Ambulance with sirens going full blast pulls up to the main entrance to Lael Stables, the door to the ambulance opens and the ramp slides forward and extends its self to the ground. Exiting the Ambulance will be this famous champions support staff, each carrying arm loads of gifts consisiting of carrots, mints, stud muffins etc. And finally this exquisitely powerful and handsome figure emerges wearing his autographed custom made blanket from Churchill Downs that says "Barbaro" on the side, he then does his famous little happy Jig, Jog steps as described by his morning excerise rider. When this gallant warrior who was critically injuried, in the Preakness, his injuries touched the very soul of an entire country and it felt his pain. After many months of healing and recuperating against life threating odds, this valiant warrior finally gets to say, what he has been looking forward to saying every day for many months, Mom, Gretchen, I'm home.
