Barbaro Updates: 79

updates are now here.

Update 688: Ed Fountaine, racing writer for the New York Post, did a quick interview with Edgar today about his visit with Barbaro yesterday. It will be in the New York Post tomorrow. Ed gave me a quick run down of the interview. It was Edgar's fourth visit. Compared to his previous visit in July, Edgar said that Barbaro looked brighter, had gained weight, and was walking around as if nothing had happened. New Bolton sent me one of their pictures from the visit, taken by Kathy Freeborn. It is of course our featured photograph.

Update 687: I just spoke to Peter Brette, who had heard from Michael, who visited Barbaro this afternoon. All remains well!

Alie, from Kennett Florist left this comment from her visit (timestamp: 8:39 pm):

Hi All
NBC was in good spirts today. I delivered treats for Bobby & staff. Of course carotts. The weather is nice today. So I am sure Barbaro must have loved his time outdoors. Have a great night. God Bless.
We Believe
Alie
KF

Update 686: This site is featured in the USA Today blog: Barbaro update: 'Excellent week', very nice.

I think one of our readers, Julie, is visiting Lost in the Fog's team tomorrow. I wanted to provide links to the articles I had not yet highlighted of the Fog:

Lost in the Fog euthanized: Eclipse Award winner loses battle with cancer, probably the best article, with good quotes from both his trainer Greg Gilchrist and his owner, Mr. Aleo.

Champion Ocala-bred race horse euthanized, this article is a great perspective from his breeder, Susan Seper.

Former owners recall impressive presence of Lost in the Fog, this article covers the perspective from the Florida Farm where the Fog was broken as a yearling.

Update 685: Pictures from Edgar Prado's visit yesterday are now available on Penn's site. Very nice.

Update 684: I just spoke to Mrs. Jackson, the main purpose of the call was to discuss the state of anti-slaughter legislation and acquire some contact information. Of course I had to ask how Barbaro was during her visit today, and he remains comfortable!

Update 683: The remainder of my morning went well. I broke a horse out of the gate to get his gate card (need approval by the gate crew before a horse first starts). I also took Chesapeake City Slew to the gate, Tim was with me, on Grandma. We walked / jogged out, this is probably their fourth time to the gate. I took a 2yo Waquoit colt to the gate, he galloped out, so it seemed like a very busy gate day today. We have a cool gate crew, and as a rider you have to really trust those you are working with when working in and around the gate. It is also a beautiful morning here at Fair Hill.

The IN HONOR OF BARBARO RESCUE CHALLENGE continues with a fourth challenge, another $500 matching challenge. Amazing, they have raised over $7,000 in less than a week thanks to your collective generosity!

Update 682: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (tuesday night). I saw Michael Matz on the track after I pulled up on Chappy, my second set. He had literally just heard from Dr. Richardson. Michael let me know that Barbaro went out twice yesterday to graze! I also saw Kathy Anderson this morning who visited Barbaro yesterday. She too expressed satisfaction. Kathy noted dozens of red roses which were delivered! I have also heard there may be photographs of Edgar's visit which I will of course try to follow up on later this morning. So basically, Barbaro had a slew of visitors yesterday and he remains comfortable.
updated wednesday 7:25am

Update 681: It has been four months since the Preakness, as noted by Barbaro's supporters in New Zealand: Four months on - Barbaro doing well. They also note Edgar's fourth visit!

I did want to return our attention back a little bit to current racing news: Countdown to the Cup: All Eyes on JC Gold Cup. The Jockey Club Gold Cup, October 8, will be our next big race to follow (although it is the Super Derby this weekend, featuring Lawyer Ron, so no doubt we will also take a quick look at that one too). The Jockey Club will be Bernardini's first race against older horses, and he is scheduled to meet Invasor. A race of great interest. Bernardini worked on monday in 1:02 2/5ths at Belmont. I think this was his second work since the Travers.

Also on the work tab recently was Giacomo. He worked on sunday, 3/4s in 1:14 (and possibly change). I asked Steve Willard (his exercise rider) about the move, and he said he did it easily (I have never worked a horse that far, in that time, and can say he / she did it easily!) Anyway , it seems Giacomo is pointed to The Goodwood, which runs the same day, different coast, as the Jockey Club.

The article also has a piece on Bernardini contending for Horse of the Year with the idea that Barbaro could still get the three year old honours. Steve, I like your thinking!

Good Morning Bobby, Alex and "Fans of Barbaro"

Another morning shift member checks in. Alex thank you so much for all the interesting reading material about the upcoming races. I, too, like Steve's way of thinking.

Good morning Marg

I'm backing off the LITF stuff for awhile. I just can't handle it. Maybe I'll try to watch and read the tributes in about a week or so. I'm just devastated about losing him so soon.

Good morning, sweet boy! I've missed you but losing your buddy The Fog really brought me so low that I couldn't visit. I am so happy with your latest good report from Dr. Dean - no more boot because your little hoofie is doing well - HURRAH! I know you had a wonderful day yesterday with your hero Edgar coming to visit - I'm sure he thought you looked much better than last time he saw you. WE LOVE EDGAR! Have a beautiful late summer/early fall day today, be a good boy for Dr. Dean, and enjoy all your treats. Love and kisses on your velvety nose!

Good Morning:

Alex, thank you for the good news on Barbaro. Glad to hear his continued progress.

Strongly agree with Steve's remarks. The most important award Barbaro can win, is a long and comfortable life, a trophy does't mean a thing compared to this.

Perhaps this link has already been posted, but if it hasn't you may want to look at it. The home page of UPENN has a picture of Barbaro looking at a monitor along with his caretakers.

Looks like he is diagnosing his injured leg along with the staff.

Socorro,

I, too, thought the photo on the UPENN site was exactly what you described ( and it really cracked me up to think Bobby was learning how to read xrays) but then someone corrected me and said that it was a pregnant mare who was having an ultrasound done. I don't know for a fact, who it is but I like the Bobby explanation better.

Good Morning All Fans of Barbaro

Good Morning Barbaro

You sure had an wonderful day yesterday with all your visitors, especially from your pal, Edgar. You have captured his heart as you have done with all of us. It is a beautiful fall morning here in Ohio and I hope it is the same at NBC. What a wonderful day to go outside,- make sure that your best buddy, Dr R, takes you out as much as possible to breathe in that cool crisp air.It would be wonderful if you win 3 year old of the year. However, you have come so far since the Preakness, all the award that anyone needs is to see you healthy and happy. You are our award winner no matter what!

Alex, Dr R and Staff, Michael Matz and Staff, you are absolutely the best!

Good morning Babyface-you're just too cute! You had tons of company yesterday, the boot replaced with a bandage, out to graze twice! Wow! I can't wait to see your latest pictures, Bobby dear. You are our sunshine after the storm. ACN & all is well with you. I wish I could be there to hug your big, strong neck & spoil you. Have a beautiful day. Love you lots Big B :>) !!

Good morning Alex- Thanks for the great updates as usual! Tomorrow is the first day of Fall, I believe, the start of my favorite time of the year.

But we already have such good news. Yesterday I the NBC release said because the hoof was doing so well, the boot was removed from Bobby's left foot - in it's place a bandage. Way to go!

Hey Bobby,

You had another VIP visit you yesterday! On top of that, you were a 2 time visitor to the great outdoors.

I admire your courage throughout this ordeal. And I can't tell you how happy I am to read about your progress. I'm sure not nearly as happy as the way you are feeling. Now you'll be expecting to go out more then once every day!

Take care Big Guy and have a wonderful day.

Love ya,

Barbaro, what a popular boy you are! Many visitors, a wonderful grooming and new pictures taken of you, Edgar and possibly, Dr. R!. We anxiously await their arrival. The best is that you were taken out twice to graze. I bet you loved that as the weather was great.

ACN ! ! ! I love Michael M. being there and giving us such early reports. No waiting , just knowing as soon as we come on, brilliant ! Way to go , Barbaro. You ARE a walking miracle.

Trying to get over the worst part of Fog's passing and concentrate on S1915. Maybe thats one good way of honoring The Fog . They were speculating last night that we had lost in the Senate, but others said don't give up. I think we should be like Bobby and not give up. Maybe that is what he is teaching us.

When he was one minute away from the unthinkable he did not lie down and give up.Perhaps he was not cognizant, but then perhaps he was. After all he was the one with the aching foot and the broken bones. In any event, he did not lie down and so I don't intend to. I will make more calls today than ever ! ANd I hope you all will.Please.

Good morning to all andmake it a good day by calling , emailing , faxing your Senators. THe most important thing at this point is to ask your Senator to :
BE A CO-SPONSOR OF THE BILL

BE A CO-SPONSOR OF THE BILL
They also said last night it would be a good strategy to to ask the aide what you could do to help the Senator become a sponsor. Thanks.

JANICE from Florida,

Dear, sweet Barbaro. So many visitors yesterday, including your special buddy, Edgar. Two trips outside to graze - enjoy the late warm summer breezes while they're here. Hope you get to go out again today. Butterfly kisses to our boy.

Thank you Alex for the updates from Michael's mouth to us. How great is that!!

I'm sure if pictures were taken of Barbaro and Edgar, you will have them for us.

It would be nice for Barbaro to get the three year old of the year award, a tribute to his outstanding racing career and everyone involved with it, however to all of Barbaro's fans, a long and happy life, free of any pain is the award we wish for him most.

Barbaro should get the award for being the best horsey patient ever!!!!

Continued prayers for Mike, MaryL., Erin, Bryan, and all the other TWR family members who need prayers.

I thought Autumn begins tomorrow, but my newspaper says it begins on Saturday the 23rd, so everyone get out there and do all the things you wanted to do this summer, but didn't!!!!! You've got a couple of extra days!!

Posted by: Rosemary at September 20, 2006 12:16 PM

Good morning, all!

What an exciting day for Barbaro yesterday! I can't wait to see new pix of him with his buddy Edgar. And now a bandage on the left hind!! This is just what we all needed after the sadness with The Fog. I was wiped out physically from crying and like others, have to take an emotional break from it for awhile. Will send cards to Fog's buddies.

Alex, Randy Moss reported yesterday that Dylan Thomas IS coming here for the JC Gold Cup! What a race that will be...usually, everyone lays low before the Breeders' Cup but now we'll get to see some fun racing in the weeks ahead.

Everyone, have a good day. Healing to all in need.

Posted by: Jane in CT at September 20, 2006 12:24 PM

Good Morning, Fans of Barbaro!

Alex, thank you for all you do. Getting the updates so quickly from Michael Matz is so settling to the "family". Right now so many of us need that comfort that Barbaro continues to recover. We've been thru such an intense time - lots of highs, but also some very sad lows. Between Steve Irwin and LITF, we all can appreciate how beautiful life truly is and how much we need to tell those we love exactly that...that we love them unconditionally (and now that Luis has finally surfaced, boy do he and I need to talk about just that...) and will treat them with respect and care.

Martita, loved your post, love how you think. I'd love to meet you and just listen to you for a while. You're wiser than I am...

LITF, I miss you my Long Time Sun. I feel you but I still physically miss you. I don't know why this hurts me so much...but I'll work thru it and see the Divine Wisdom in all this.

Barbaro, you grazed twice yesterday and saw Edgar and Peter. Dr. R is very happy with your progress - each day is one more day closer to when you can go home. When that day comes, boy is there ever going to be a party..nationwide, worldwide.

Take care, everybody.

Healing and Peace,
Lyn Gilbert

Alex:

There aren't enough words to thank you for all the work you go to, bringing us updates, along with providing links and insights into so many other aspects of racing and the horses and trainers!

Is there an address where we are able to write to Edgar Prado, or his agent to have a note forwarded? I just think it's wonderful that he's visited Barbaro FOUR times now! What a great and compassionate man.

#####
Hang in there, Mike Rea--you're doing great!

I am saddened immensely by the turn of events that led The Fog's family to have to make the difficult decision that they did. They will need all our prayers during this painful time.

On a spiritual note, I would like to offer the following thoughts for any who might be receptive to this way of thinking. It might help to ease the grief.

I believe we're all spiritual beings -- that our physical self is not our "real" self. The Fog is spiritual too. Thus, what we understand as his "death", is not really the true fact of his "being". In reality, he has not "died" at all; he has simply passed from our physical eyes -- from our physical sense of him -- to his true being, which is spiritual. The Fog is still with us, we just can't "see" him, because we can only "see" right now with our physical eyes.

It has been said that "death" is a kind of "door", where we awake on the other side, only to realize that we're not "dead" at all.

What makes us so terribly sad, is that The Fog has passed from our physical sight. But if we could peer -- just for a moment -- past this mortal "veil", we would see The Fog again. And we would see and understand that he has never been out of God's Loving Embrace.

We are the ones in the "fog", so to speak -- the mortal "fog". Jesus was able to "see" past the mortal condition, and so was able to heal and to raise people from the "dead" because he understood so well the "unreality" of the thing called "death". Most of us are not quite so skilled, even though Jesus said that we could do what he did. When we pray to "see" the truth, many times our doubt that we will succeed clouds our spritual vision, so we might feel that we've failed. But God does not fail. And even though WE can no longer see The Fog, GOD sees him, because he's still present -- he still exists among us. He still LIVES...in the truest sense of the word.

Yes, if we could just glimpse for a moment, the spiritual realm, we would see The Fog in his full glory. And Secretariat, and all the others, all around us, every day.

Let us try with all our might, not to dwell too much on sadness and grief. Those are heavy emotions that we don't want to spill over into other demonstrations of healing that we are trying to accomplish. Mortal mind or evil has a way of getting us "off the track", and we don't want to be "tricked" into thinking that God does not heal. So let not our spirit be broken or discouraged, but let us rejoice that not only is The Fog truly "healthy" -- albeit beyond our physical sense -- we must continue to affirm, without doubting, and without ceasing, the manifestation in this physical realm of the healing being revealed to us each day for Barbaro!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Linnie, I didn't get to read all the tributes, but I did read your poem. Thank you, Linnie. It was beautiful. I hope your spirit will be lifted today as you go about your duties.
Also notified the senators from Texas and Illinois we will not book any travel to their states until the slaughter houses are shut down. We just pulled a 200 plus person convention out of Dallas and booked elsewhere.
God continue to bless Barbaro and help direct us to fight to stop the slaughter.
For anyone who wants to call Senator Stevens who is holding the Bill S1915 in his committee
his D.C. phone is 202. 224. 3004
Please put some pressure here today folks, maybe it will help. I had to leave a voice mail, but perhaps someone will listen. ASK FOR THE ANIMAL RIGHTS OR ANIMAL WELFARE AIDE - LEAVE THAT PERSON AVOICE MAIL IF NECESSARY.
Think what it might mean if this aide gets thousands of phone call on S1915. I told them I am a Friend of Barbaro member and I call the bill Barbaro's Bill in his honor. Trying to get it in their heads by personalizing it.
Please call , call today.
Lord God, wrap S1915 in Divine Love and Divine Order. Open the heart of every member of the Senate to clearly hear the voice of the horse, and feel the Magnificent Spirit of the horse. May each member be immediately compelled to move S1915 to the floor in a right and perfect way, and then vote with their hearts and their conscience for the highest good of all.
TO ALL FANS OF BARBARO REGARDING S.1915.
GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!
CAROLE! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH FOR GETTING THE WORD OUT ABOUT THE SENATORS THAT ARE UP FOR RE- ELECTION.
I can't stress this enough to everyone, I spoke directly with Senator Kohls office and had an "off the record" conversation in regard to what they feel we REALLY need to do to get this bill on to the floor by Sept 29th. AGAIN, as Carole posted earlier, we only have until September 29th..
Please, please, please, please, contact the REPUBLICAN Senators who are up for Re-election. These Senators will be the key people who will therefore put pressure on the committee to get this bill on the floor by SEPT 29TH. AGAIN, my source said that the only way this WILL happen is if the REPUBLICANS who are up for re-election are contacted.
"IT WILL BE THE "WILL" OF A REPUBLICAN Senator who is up for re-election that will make this happen." my source quoted.
PLEASE, PLEASE, MAKE THE CALL.
I know someone posted it previously, but what is Sen. Rick Santorum's position on the bill? He's a Republican and he's in a tough re-election fight in Pennsylvania (where Barbaro currently resides) and it might help him change the way he is perceived by the voters if he were to push a bill like this one. He might be a good one to focus on? Just a thought.
Okay, Barbaro Team: I just got this email from my New Mexico Representative, Heather Wilson. I am going to respond but I wanted to let you guys read it first......very negative.
Dear Jeanette,
Thank you for your email about the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act HR 503. I appreciate hearing from you.
The purpose of the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act HR 503 is to amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes. The bill passed by a vote of 263 to 146 on September 7, 2006. I voted against the bill.
I did not oppose this bill because I like the idea of horses being slaughtered for foreign dinner tables. Rather, I opposed HR503 because I believed it to be a flawed piece of legislation. The problem I saw with the bill was that it made no provisions for the care and accommodation of horses no longer wanted by their owners.
Horse ownership is expensive, and owners may decide to get rid of certain horses for a variety of reasons. They may be old or infirm, they may be exceedingly ill-tempered, or perhaps the owner's financial situation has changed and he or she can simply no longer afford to care for the animal. Selling horses for slaughter is not lucrative for horse owners, but it does provide an outlet by which owners can manage their horse populations, and by which horses can be transported and processed humanely under the watch of US Department of Agriculture inspectors.
Currently, approximately 90,000 horses in the U.S. are slaughtered annually for consumption in Europe and Japan . Ideally, every unwanted horse could find a new home in a shelter or through a horse adoption program, but unfortunately those avenues would quickly be overwhelmed by the sheer number of horses that are currently sold for slaughter each year. The best-case estimates I saw speculated that up to 20% of these 90,000 could be placed in adoption programs or shelters, resulting in around 72,000 unwanted horses with no place to go.
The problem with HR503-and the reason why I chose not to vote for it-is that it provides no alternatives or funding for dealing with these tens of thousands of unwanted or problem horses that could no longer be managed through the existing method. If an owner can no longer find a market for an unwanted horse, the owner may feel forced to get rid of the horse in a less humane manner, or may simply abandon the animal. As Representative John Dingell, the ranking Democrat on the House Energy & Commerce Committee put it, "What you are going to find is you'll be up to your eyeballs in dead horses with no place to put them."
Again, thank you for contacting me about this issue. If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Sincerely,
Heather Wilson
Member of Congress
Posted by: Debra, WI at September 20, 2006 3:39 PM
Jeanette, Ms. Wilson sounds just like the AQHA rep who appeared at the House hearing on HR 503. Both of them reference "ill-tempered" horses. I guess if a horse misbehaves, the punishment is death by slaughter? Hmm. That's odd, because most misbehavior is the result of abuse or bad training, which are not the horse's fault. And even if a horse were truly so ill-tempered that it can't be around humans, wouldn't it be much more humane to simply euthanize the horse, the way they do with dogs who attack people? Their implication that slaughter is a justified punishment for misbehavior is one of those things that makes me scratch my head . . .
Posted by: Amy L. at September 20, 2006 3:43 PM
Debra in WI...I contacted Sen Mel Martinez (R) and spoke with Amber...all I could get is a "he has supported legislation like this in the past, but I don't know what he is going to do with this one..." I tried to engage her in some friendly persuation regarding the bill, but she wouldn't commit to more than her previous statement... To be perfectly honest, she sounded a bit short, which I interpeted to be fatigue...I told her I knew how busy these last days are, and I stressed how wonderful it would be to see legislation passed before the recess...adding that it would certainly reflect well on our FL Senators...
I also contacted Senator Bill Nelson (D)...the tone was much friendlier...I spoke with Tony, who said that Senator Nelson was definitely for the legislation. We discussed the fact that he is on the Commerce Committee and how he could use his influence to get the bill out of committee and onto the floor...I then requested that he co-sponsor the bill, and how nice it would be to get
this legislation passed before the break.I added that if we couldn't get it thru one way, then unanimous consent could be another...Tony was very nice and expressed genuine interest in helping me...
I will definitely call Senator Martinez's office again this afternoon...and every day until the break....Debra...I think your advice is right on the money...
Amy L. There is the crux of this issue - an ill tempered horse gets slaughtered for meat because he misbehaves, when it is probably human misbehavior that caused the problem. Even IF the horse is born that way, humane euthanasia is the answer, but then the meat could not be used for consumption. Hence - NO MONEY. Then it becomes just plain old greed when they send the horse to slaughter. And only greed.
Hey - if people can't afford the horse, if they can't afford to euthanize it humanely, if they can't afford to take care of it, THEN DON"T GET A HORSE!!! I'd like to drive a $60,000 car, but I can't afford it, so I don't have one!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRR! HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! SPIT!
I get so annoyed at the irresponsibility.
I called Sen. Santorum's office around noon and talked to a live person! He took my message and was polite , but was in a big hurry. probably lunch or other phones ringing. I had to wait on hold for a couple minutes.
I told him the Sen. should take advantage of Barbaro being in his state and so-sponsor the barbaro bill s1915 and publicize it. I said it would probably take him up another 5% in the polls and gain him many more votes of all animal lovers.
I guess this seems oppotunistic and it probably is , but we are talking about lives here and very short time to do anything. Alls fair in love and war AND POLITICS AT THIS POINT.
I sent an email to the White House telling Pres. Bush to support this bill and go to Barbaro's stall in PA to sign the bill and raise his poll numbers 10 points. I said he should prop the paper on Barbaro's back/shoulder( withers) to sign , because Barbaro has carried this whole thing !!
Hey - if people can't afford the horse, if they can't afford to euthanize it humanely, if they can't afford to take care of it, THEN DON"T GET A HORSE!!! I'd like to drive a $60,000 car, but I can't afford it, so I don't have one!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRR! HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! SPIT!
I get so annoyed at the irresponsibility.
Your post is SO well said. How right you are
Thanks again so much for all you do to keep us updated, not only on Bobby, but everything else.
I continue to pray for strength and comfort for all o The Fog's special people. If I feel so sad about his passing and I never ever saw him, I can only imagine the loss they are feeling.
What a blessing you are. You have brought so much joy to so many people. I praise God every day for you miraculous recovery. Glad to hear all the good reports on you from yesterday. I bet you were quite happy, with visits from all you special people and two outings! I pray you will continue to stay safe, happy, and healthy under God's protection.
Hello All~ It’s a beautiful day here in Kennett Square! I am happy to report that I have found our counterpart in CA. The shop is Ashby Flowers, 3000 Telegraph Ave, Berkeley, CA 94705, phone 800-644-7662. The shop owner’s name is Marcy, and she is WONDERFUL. She’s an animal lover herself and will work with all of us Barbaromaniacs in floral designs and horsy baskets. She will accept credit cards at a minimum of $10.00, and checks for any amount. Mail or call her directly. Grandma Bea has already contacted her. I wish we could go to CA. and do this tribute to Lost in the Frog ourselves, but it’s a little far from Kennett Square. My heart goes out to Fogy’s family & friends.
Below is an e-mail posted by Barbara Reeves in the mailing list at MarvWalker.com. Barbara says to feel free to cross-post this e-mail, and use it when contacting your Senators. It is long, but worth the read. Also feel free to use portions of it, if you feel the whole e-mail is too long.
Barbara Reeves wrote:
A few years ago, I was on the pro-slaughter (necessary evil) side. I didn't really have any facts to back up my stance, just a "gut" feeling about how I thought the industry worked. I decided to do some research so I could use logic and reason to counter the anti-slaughter arguments. My research sources included calls to the slaughter plants, economic data from the American Horse Council (a pro-slaughter organization), census data from the Government, stolen horse information from netposse.com, and a few others. By the time I was done (after more than a month of data gathering and number crunching), I realized that the anti-slaughter side was actually on the right track.
Forget about the emotional side for a moment, and consider the raw numbers and economics. Sure, things will be hard for a while, but what about the long term effects? If the bottom of the horse market falls out (which it has been doing slowly anyway), what will happen? In my estimation, show horses and other high priced horses should only be minimally effected. That class of horses does not rely on slaughter to set price trends. Their prices follow the demand for the sport/horse, trends in horses/sports, and the generally economy. The sector that will be hit the hardest are the low priced horses, poor quality horses, and "common" horses (those already in a saturated market).
So, what will happen when those horses lose value? Breeders who breed these horses will lose money, horse dealers/traders with this stock will lose money, auction houses will start losing money. It may take a few breeding seasons, but eventually, these people will get tired of losing money. Breeders will sell out or switch to a better breed/type that will bring in money. Horse dealers/traders will do the same. Auction houses will have to start figuring out how to bring in better horses, different horses, or different "things" to sell. No one likes to lose money!!! Because of the falling prices, the average horse buyer will start demanding better quality for his/her money. It's Toyota's lovely "Trade Up" instinct. So, it's only logical to think that sellers/breeders will follow the money and start breeding/selling better horses. Eventually, we will have a more stable horse market, see better prices, and see better quality horses being bred.
-------------------------------------------------
Here is a post I put on another forum regarding some questions. I thought it might be useful toward this discussion.
Abuse is a totally separate issue from slaughter. If you want tougher abuse laws and more enforcement, contact your State Legislators. Get them to pass tougher punishments and get after the local authorities to enforce the laws. You cannot complain if you do not try to do something about it.
The horses that would have gone to slaughter at auctions will be sold at auction, sold privately, donated to a rescue, donated to a therapeutic riding center, donated to a vet school, donated to a zoo or big cat sanctuary, or humanely euthanized.
Slaughter is going away. The people that frequent auctions (other than killer buyers) will still go to auctions. Prices for auction horses will go down, but the slaughter buyers buy a SMALL percentage of horses. Last year, 80,000 something horses were slaughtered. There are 9.2 MILLION horses in the USA, 3 million of those registered Quarter Horses. Barely 1% of the horse population was slaughtered.
To put things in perspective, the mortality rate for horses is 10%. That means that over 900,000 horses a year die from illness, injury, accident, or natural causes. Those 900,000 horses are buried, rendered, or incinerated. Only 10% of horses slaughtered are old, sick, injured, or otherwise unuseable. So, that means that only 8,000-10,000 more horses a year will need to be put down. The other 70,000 to 80,000 will be in fine shape to stay in the market.
Alive - Died - Would have been Slaughtered
9,200,000 - 900,000 - 90,000 (we'll round it up to make it look
better)
That last number looks pretty insignificant when you consider the other two. At least, it does for someone who has taken classes in statistics and economics. The horse economy will be able to absorb those horses. They didn't spring up from no where, they were already here.
As for the people employed by the slaughter industry. The truck drivers will drive for someone else. I see LOTS of trucks going down the road with "now hiring drivers" signs on them. The actual plant employees quit on a regular basis anyway (it is a VERY high turnover industry), so they'll get jobs wherever they normally would. The plant owners are from Belgium (and rich), so I imagine they will go home or start up some other business. The USDA inspectors will still work for the USDA. They will just go on to inspect other slaughter facilities.
The REASON for slaughter is that people in Europe and Asia like to eat horses. That is it! There is NOTHING we can do about that. They are entitled to do what their culture finds acceptable. Slaughter does not control horse population and it is not needed to control horse prices. When horses were at their highest price, slaughter buyers still bought, and paid a premium price (up to $1 a pound on the hoof at one point). The ONLY way to stop horse slaughter is to make it illegal. Nothing you do about breeding or population control will effect the number of horses slaughtered.
The ONLY private sale horses that will be effected (price wise) are those of mediocre or low quality and those that are "common" (breeds or types that already have a saturated market). So, people breeding quality horses that are not in a saturated market and are currently selling for good prices should NOT be effected much. If you think you fall in this category, but you do end up having problems selling, then you were wrong and/or the market in general in your area is going down (as it has been for the last 5 or 6 years). Breeders that produce quality foals that have a good market, and they (the people) know how to properly market their foals, will survive. When things settle down, prices will go up, prices will be more stable, we will see better horses being bred (since that is where the money will be), and profits will be better than they have in the last 5 years.
I base these opinions and forecasts on my own knowledge of the slaughter industry (which is from independent research of ALL sources, I was pro-slaughter once upon a time), knowledge and experience on both the amateur and professional side of the horse industry, and knowledge gained from taking courses at college in economics, statistics, philosophy, history, theory, and research methods. My opinions are not just pulled out of my rear end, or regurgitated from some worthless PETA web site (who I despise by the way, PETA makes it hard for the rest of us to get through to people...).
------------------------------
Also, here is my Summary of all of the areas I researched. I do speak a little on the "emotional" side of things, but most information is "just the facts."
In 2004 just under 66,000 horses were slaughtered here in the US for human consumption overseas (nearly 20,000 were exported live to Canada, Mexico, and Japan for slaughter). Their meat is exported to France, Belgium, Italy, and Japan. Horsemeat is generally considered a delicacy in these countries and is higher priced than beef. France alone consumed 300,000 horses in 2003, Italy 350,000 horses. The French numbers may change however. French government officials have suggested to stop the sale of horsemeat in restaurants due to health concerns. Many medications and topical treatments that are commonly use on horses are never to be used on animals intended for food. There is no withdrawal period. (the US numbers are from the USDA, the world numbers I got from a pro-slaughter news article written in 2004.)
The 2005 population of horses in the US is approximately 9.2 million horses (from the American Horse council's census). The 66,000 slaughtered horses represents 0.7% of the total population. It looks like we'll hit about 120,000 horses this year (2005), which is 1.3% of the total population. In 1990 over 315,000 horses were slaughtered in the US. The number of horses slaughtered has steadily dropped in the last 14 years while the number of foals being born has increased (with some major fluctuation of the number slaughtered). Drops in the number of horses slaughtered have been almost 80,000 a year at times. During those years we did not see a huge influx of "surplus" horses or a large drop in the price of horses. The number of horses slaughtered every year follows the demand for their meat, not the overall horse population. This illustrates the lack of a need for the slaughter industry to regulate horse population.
The American Horse Council estimates that 10% of the horse population dies every year, either by accident/injury, illness, or natural causes. That means 920,000 horses will die this year. That HUGE number (800,000+) of horses dying from ways other than slaughter has not created a bad environmental impact, like the AMVA and AQHA would like you to think. So the number of horses that will die outnumbers those that will be slaughtered by 9:1. Statistically speaking, the number of horses slaughtered every year is insignificant. (the American Horse Council, which is an arguably pro- slaughter organization.)
California passed similar legislation in 1998. Since then, horse thefts have dropped almost 40% and continue to drop every year (based on police reports filed for stolen animals). Horse prices have remained steady. Abuse cases in California have not risen at all, and have declined in areas, while the national average is on the rise. Also, during the years that the Illinois slaughter facility was closed, abuse numbers leveled off and even began to fall. Ironically (or maybe not), Texas has the highest rate of horse abuse in the nation. This illustrates that ending slaughter will not encourage the mass neglect and abuse of horses.
The method of transporting horses to slaughter is inhumane. Horses often travel 36 hours or more without rest, food, or water in cramped double decker trailers (this is standard operating procedure, ask any killer buyer). These trailers are built for shorter animals such as cattle and pigs; most horses cannot lift their heads. Horses often slip and fall in these trailers arriving at the plants dead or severely crippled. Transportation reform laws were passed in 2002 but they have not done any good. Even proponents of slaughter like Dr. Friend of Texas A&M agree that the transportation of horses to slaughter is inhumane.
The slaughter itself is also inhumane. The chutes that hold the horses are made for cows. Horses are much more flexible with longer necks. They are also more intuitive than cows and have a skittish nature in stressful unfamiliar environments. They thrash about making the captive bolt operator's job very difficult. The operator often has to stun a horse 3-4 times before rendering the horse unconscious. Sometimes the horse is slaughtered while still alive. USDA considers a 95% rate of unconsciousness before being butchered very acceptable. That means that 3,300 horses (at best) were slaughtered last year while they were still fully alive. The captive bolt gun is used to stun the horses. It's like a spike on a leash. It is shot into the horse's head and then retracts back in to the gun. It can be a humane method of a killing a horse (much like a well placed bullet), but the assembly line fashion that these horses are run through makes it nearly impossible.
Horses that go to slaughter are not generally old, sick, crippled, or dangerous. By the slaughter houses' own records (Dallas Crown and Beltex in Texas) only 10% of horses killed are old, sick, injured, or otherwise "unusable". Just like beef consumers, people who eat horse want young tender flesh. It's just plain ridiculous to think that all of the horses being slaughtered are 25 yr. old nags who can barely walk... (this is based on what the actual slaughter plants record) Most horses going to slaughter are not "unwanted", they are simply at the wrong auction at the wrong time.
And did you know that 40-50,000 horses are stolen in the USA every year? You can verify these statistics with Stolen Horse International, http://netposse.com. Did you know that the only reason the slaughter plants scan for microchips is to remove them so they do not contaminate the meat? This was testimony from plant workers.
One interesting statistic, roughly 70% of all horses that are slaughtered in the USA are quarter horses (stock-type, some with verifiable AQHA papers). This is fact based on the slaughter plants' records. There are over 3 MILLION registered quarter horses in the USA.
There is no hard proof or evidence that stopping horse slaughter will cause a rise in abuse and neglect, thousands of unwanted horses lining the streets, or environmental problems. BUT, there IS evidence to suggest that stopping horse slaughter will NOT cause these problems.
FOR PAMELA ...
Hi Pam ... you posted:
Debra in WI...I contacted Sen Mel Martinez (R) and spoke with Amber...all I could get is a "he has supported legislation like this in the past, but I don't know what he is going to do with this one..." I tried to engage her in some friendly persuation regarding the bill, but she wouldn't commit to more than her previous statement... To be perfectly honest, she sounded a bit short, which I interpeted to be fatigue...I told her I knew how busy these last days are, and I stressed how wonderful it would be to see legislation passed before the recess...adding that it would certainly reflect well on our FL Senators...
I also contacted Senator Bill Nelson (D)...the tone was much friendlier...I spoke with Tony, who said that Senator Nelson was definitely for the legislation. We discussed the fact that he is on the Commerce Committee and how he could use his influence to get the bill out of committee and onto the floor...I then requested that he co-sponsor the bill, and how nice it would be to get
this legislation passed before the break.I added that if we couldn't get it thru one way, then unanimous consent could be another...Tony was very nice and expressed genuine interest in helping me...
I will definitely call Senator Martinez's office again this afternoon...and every day until the break....Debra...I think your advice is right on the money...
I think it's terrific that we stay on top of our own state senators in this, and I'm with you regarding Martinez and Nelson. Unfortunately, Martinez, the Republican Senator, is not up for re-election this term, but we need to keep in touch.
I just emailed Sen. Nelson again in response to his email to me; I will follow up with phone calls in the next day or two to both Nelson and Martinez' offices.
Great work, Pam!!
Senator Santorum has always been a friend of animal rights. However, he has not yet made the decision to be a co-sponsor of S1915. I hand delivered information to his DC office when I was there a couple of weeks ago.
When I spoke to him last week, they hadn't had time to discuss this yet because last week and this week were very busy with other issues. I told him I would be back in touch next week.
I suggest you give him a quick call and mention that you are a constituent and ask him again to co-sponsor.
His aid who is handling this is Matt Beynon and his number is 202-224-6324.
Dear All
Our Senators are our employees. They answer to us, and have taken oaths to represent our will, not their own. We, the people, determine how and what they vote for. Even the President of the US is our employee. Always keep that concept in all communication, because it will remind those we write and call that this is their oath and duty as elected officials. If we win, they win. If we lose, they lose.
Get that aid's name and stay in contact with that one person.
Trying to get over the worst part of Fog's passing and concentrate on S1915. Maybe thats one good way of honoring The Fog . They were speculating last night that we had lost in the Senate, but others said don't give up. I think we should be like Bobby and not give up. Maybe that is what he is teaching us.
I talked to a wonderful assistant to Senator Nelson yesterday who is totally in support of our efforts. He said the senate has 2 other big issues right now and only 2 weeks left before recess and they might not be back until JANUARY 2007. He advised me to BE VERY PERSISTANT NOW! He said the Senator is also in support but I asked him to urge him to be a co-sponsor and get this bill to the floor. TIME IS OF THE ESSENSE according to him.
Good luck to Master of Disaster who's running at Monmouth Park today, race 8, post time 3.54pm....and as usual, hoping that all horses have a safe day.
SUGGESTION:
An approach could be to call the offices, get friendly with the aides, get their names and send e-mails and faxes to the aides and the Senators.
BEG/PLEAD and thank them for their time.
Shelley A
Just called my senator and ask to speak to the aid handling animal rights. She stoped, then asked me what was it about. Told her S1915, she said she will let the senator know. She never said, if they had a aid just for animal rights.
She was very short with me.
I will keep trying!
I also e-mailed the President's office to see if we can get any support from him!
He has alot of Republicans friends that he would like to see get elected or stay on in the Senate.
Dumb Question,
WHAT ARE THE SENATORS DOING BETWEEN ELECTION AND JANUARY 7??? TAKING A VACATION???
Sorry, but they had a 5 week summer recess and are barely accomplishing anything and now this?
FOR BARB:
I talked to a wonderful assistant to Senator Nelson yesterday who is totally in support of our efforts. He said the senate has 2 other big issues right now and only 2 weeks left before recess and they might not be back until JANUARY 2007. He advised me to BE VERY PERSISTANT NOW! He said the Senator is also in support but I asked him to urge him to be a co-sponsor and get this bill to the floor. TIME IS OF THE ESSENSE according to him.
This is exactly what I said to Nelson in my email to him today ... that time is of the essence.
Here's the email I sent to Sen. Nelson today (a similar one with some minor changes was also sent to Sen. Mel Martinez):
Dear Sen. Nelson & Aides:
Thank you for your email dated 9/18/2006 @ 9:44 AM in response to my original email to you of Friday, September 8th regarding S.1915, American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.
I appreciate your past support on this issue and I also want to thank you for your continued compassionate stance on all issues of animal rights and welfare.
But I do need your help and your advice at this time because I don't know the best way to proceed on getting S.1915 passed and into law as quickly as possible. Your email to me did not state your position on this bill and whether or not you actively support it's passage, so I am still unsure as to where you stand at the present time.
I do know that we need more co-sponsors for S.1915, and along these lines, I encourage and urge your consideration and participation in becoming a co-sponsor for the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.
In this connection, is there anything further that I can do at this time to make this a reality, Sen. Nelson? Would you like additional corroborative information on why S. 1915 needs to be passed without amendment during this current Congressional Session? I look to you and your aides for suggestions and advice because time is of the essence for those of us who want to see the ongoing barbaric slaughter of our American equine companions stopped immediately and quickly.
Please help me. What more can I do, as your constituent, to convey and stress how important it is to have you become a Co-sponsor of S.1915 now. I will be guided by your advice, and again, I humbly thank you for your time, consideration and support.
Most Sincerely and a member of "Fans of Barbaro"
Anyone other than myself here from Alabama?
The aid handling animal rights for Senator Sessions name is Clay. I didn't get to talk to her, she is out to lunch. But I was sent to her voice mail. Hope she calls me back.
I just had a pretty good conversation with Suzanne in Stevens office. She asked me how are they really killed. I told her & suggested she visit the HSUS site to see. I first asked her about S1915, she gave me the pros & cons, that (old & ill bit) thats when I told her about Salvation. She then started asking me more questions. She said she would tell him,"put a bug in his ear" She also told me about a mother who called yesterday about her daughters horse being stolen right out of the pen & taken to S. I hope this helps.
DEBBIE L.A.
I just called Senator Sessions
office. Got a person. I asked
for Clay..she was hesitant. I
could tell she wished I hadn't
called. She rang Clay..no
answer..first woman said,
"do you want her voice mail"?
I said, yes...and left my
message. I don't live in
Alabama, but no one asked.
Not much satisfaction here.
It seems to me that once
they know what it's about
we get blocked.
Thank you.
I did tell them my name.
Barbaro I think that's funny you keep getting roses when you don't like them. But people mean well. They think you won the Run for the Roses, and deserve some. I hope you are able to get out twice again on this fine early fall day in this part of the country. It's breezy, so hopefully that's keeping the flies away. I can't believe they replaced your left cast with a bandage!
Still am very sad about Fog. Will again call the Md. senators to bug them about S1915, and will try Ted Stevens office, although I know he supported shooting wolves from the air to help keep up the moose population for the hunters. But we must be positive.
