Barbaro Updates: 81

updates are now here.

Update 699: Peter Brette just called, he had spoken to Michael, who had visited Barbaro this afternoon. Barbaro remains comfortable. Peter plans to visit Barbaro tomorrow.

Update 698: Rachel from Kennett Florist left this update (timestamp: 9:12pm):

Afternoon all!

Sorry I never got a chance to post yesterday, things were a bit busy here at the homestead. Everyone seems to be in good spirits at NBC... they a litte help from the sugar fairy today. Barbaro had his carrots and treats delivered in a timely manor... we don't want him waiting on his stud muffins. We also found out he really likes the Nicker Makers, so Alie and I stopped and stocked up.

Mrs Jackson was at NBC today. She was out front getting her picture taken... forgot to ask her what it was for. She was standing in front of all the signs hanging on the fence at the entrance (one was hung on the day of our get-together by Della). The weather has gotten cooler here, it feels like fall. But I bet it feels good to graze on a crisp fall day!

WE BELIEVE!!

The Bloodhorse has a page in rememberance to Lost in the Fog: REMEMBERING Lost in the Fog.

Update 697: A couple of races in North America to keep an eye on for the weekend. The Louisana Super Derby is the principle 3yo race: Super Derby a Classic confrontation. Lawyer Ron, Point Determined and Strong Contender will each need impressive performances to move forward to the Breeders' Cup Classic. One of my all time favourites, Sunday Silence, used a win in the Super Derby to prepare for the Breeders' Cup Classic.

The second race, The Sky Classic Stakes, a grade 2 turf race, to be run on sunday in Woodbine: Better Talk Now seeks return to winning ways in Sky Classic at Woodbine. Lets hope we see Better Talk Now return to his winning ways, and if we do, I can get an interview with Ramon Dominguez, who I think will be in Fair Hill next week. Graham is quoted in the article:

"I've said all year that he's as good as he's ever been," Motion said. "I still believe that. But he'll have to step up on Sunday and prove he is the same horse."

and

"I still get emotional when I think back to the Breeders' Cup. It was a turning point for me in my career," Motion said. "Year in and year out, he gives everything he has. But to me, he has never gotten the respect he deserves. He's a great horse."

Update 696: One of my remaining sets was Chappy (me), breezing with Happy (Tim). Judge, who trains Chappy, had his neighbour and a couple of their friends visiting to watch. They all read this site, I thought that was very cool. For the breeze itself, Happy went very well, Chappy was fine, but I do think she prefers the turf (she seemed to handle the woodchip track when breezing so much better, which is a good signal to indicate a turf horse.) Her pedigree is also pretty much all turf. We shall see, we still have a little way to go before they are ready for the races.

Sue McMullen sent this e-mail, the preview of the key races at Ascot this weekend:

Saturday's card at Ascot is billed as 'The Mile Championships' and includes the best all-aged mile race in Europe, the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. The winner of this race is often crowned champion miler of Europe and since the World Thoroughbred Racehorse rankings were first published in 1979, 11 winners of the QEII have headed the mile category, with seven occuping second place.

Not suprisingly, nine very classy horses line up tomorrow and all eyes will be on the enigmatic George Washington. Bred by the Jacksons, George won the 2,000 Guineas in the same imperious and exciting manner as Bobby won the Kentucky Derby, but that victory also labelled him, perhaps unfairly, as having a somewhat fragile temperament, which Ballydoyle have tended to play down. He was slightly reluctant to go down to the start, proved difficult to load into the gate and then, to the amusement of onlookers, refused flatly to walk into the winners' circle, which prompted debate in the press about his 'temperament' and if it would withstand further racing. To be fair to him, he wasn't leaping about or uncontrollable when refusing to go into the winners' circle, just quietly planting his feet and saying 'no' but much was made of this 'aberration'. He was beaten on his next two outings, first at the Curragh in the Irish Guineas, where he faced what was described as soft ground, but was in fact bog-like, and also pulled muscles, but still managed to finish second. His injury resulted in time out of serious training to recover, and he made his comeback last month at Goodwood in the Celebration Mile, where just about everything went wrong for him. He was slow to break, was rank early on and hung badly right and didn't seem to like the straight, exhibiting the same erratic style of running as he had at Newmarket, but he still showed the electric acceleration in the uphill finish to grab third. In his defense, Goodwood is a totally different track to anything he'd experienced and it clearly didn't suit him, plus his pacemaker River Tiber seemed to have forgotten he was there. Ascot should suit him better and he is now apparently accompanied everywhere by a retired stablemate to keep him happy. Aiden is always very defensive of his horses, understandably, and describes George as an intelligent individual who wants to do things his way and was just inexperienced at Newmarket. Horses aren't machines and they sometimes get unfairly labelled especially by racewriters, some of whom have pretty fragile temperaments themselves and who know little about horses off the track, just because they are a bit different. As long as the seriously talented George can handle the pressures of the the big event, who are we to question how he does it and to be fair, he's coped well since Newmarket.

In 11 attempts O'Brien has never won this race, coming close to it with the hugely talented and very unlucky Hawk Wing, who was dogged with problems throughout his career, and the awesome Giants Causeway, who was only beaten on tactics by Observatory in 2000. Everybody knew that if he saw the whites of their eyes, nothing could get passed 'the iron horse' in a battle, so they brought Observatory so ridiculously wide he was almost in the car park and Giants Causeway didn't see him until it was too late. Sneaky, but the only way to do it.

Lining up against George, who heads the betting market, will be his stablemates Ivan Denisovich and River Tiber, plus his Irish 2,000 Guineas conqueror, Araafa and the Godolphin trio, Echo of Light, Librettist and Proclamation. And if that doesn't set the scene for a mouth-watering clash, add the heroine of the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, Naninna, and Court Masterpiece, winner of the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood (ahead of Araafa and Echo of Light) and Killybegs, winner of this year's Craven Stakes who finished ahead of George at Goodwood. Despite the quality and experience of the opposition, there is no doubt that an in-form George can beat this illustrious crew.

Another Group One on the card is The Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile, always a useful pointer to the following season's classics, won in the past by the likes of Nannina, Soviet Song, Reams of Verse, Oh So Sharp and Bosra Sham. Sadly it will be without the hot favourite for next year's 1,000 Guineas, the American-bred and very exciting filly Sander Camillo (by Dixie Union) as her next target is the Chevely Park. But eight nice fillies line-up, including the unbeaten Sesmen, English Ballet, winner of the Sweet Solera Stakes and Simply Perfect, winner of the May Hill.

Update 695: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (thursday night). I saw Michael Matz as I was heading out on my third set this morning. He had heard from Dr. Richardson. For the third set Tim and I took Chesapeake City Slew and Grandma out back to gallop up the hills. There were two other sets of horses out there galloping around, Tim thought it was a little like Newmarket Heath. I am not sure Newmarket has the deer we have, seemingly placed ready to spook the horses.

It is another beautiful morning at Fair Hill. During my first set, galloping on the dirt track, I saw Miraculous Miss galloping by me. She looks good, and I am guessing will be getting ready to work after her big win at Delaware. I also saw Red Aspen out grazing by Tim's barn. Tim said she ate up well last night after her nice win.
update 8:00 am, friday morning, september 22

Update 694: This morning's Barbaro update might be a little later, an hour or so. Just an FYI. In the meantime here is Fred Stone's painting of Barbaro: A Legacy of Hope
Barbaro
.

The Bloodhorse reports Horse Slaughter Bill on Hold. While this is clearly a set back, do not let it derail your efforts. You can also sign this petition.

Mike Rea will get to spend a little time at home this weekend: Good Morning Everyone and has been out to watch some soccer: One Tired Man. I really hope the soccer team was more successful than mine, who were unceremonially dumped out of cup competition mid week in england!

The IN HONOR OF BARBARO RESCUE CHALLENGE continues, this fifth challenge is to honor Lost in the Fog.

Finally, The Daily racing Form confirms Sue McMullen's e-mail yesterday (update 691): Dylan Thomas may go to Turfway.

Good morning everyone. Thanks to all and to Alex.

Pamela, (carrying over from last update), thanks for the info on Sen. Martinez...that's even better than I'd hoped for. Bravo for you work!

Barbaro, have a great day!

Another morning crew member checking in. TGIF!!

As everyone else - looking forward to a good report for Bobby today. I understand it will be later, but that's OK - my only concern is that it's "good".

The Fred Stone painting is absolutely gorgeous!!!
I'll take one for every room.

The Blood Horse article is discouraging - but -I'll not stop fighting - as long as this body has breath in it. Those "horror" houses WILL close. It's only a matter of when. If not through the Senate, then we'll have to use other ideas - picketing in Texas or the Belgian embassy or an overwhelming mail campaign to the Belgian owners/government. But stop - NEVER.

I, too, have to wonder why the politicians in Florida wouldn't overwhelmingly support this bill considering the importance of the equine industry in Florida. I know that the Martinez aide said the Senator is a supporter, but why doesn't he co-sponser as Nelson did. You know the old saying "talk is cheap".

You know this COULD be a good thing. I think we all have our Senator's "home" addresses and PH #s, right? We could make them so tired of us they will vote on it as soon as they are back and pass it just to shut us up!!!

Why is this week's sessions abbreviated? Are they only working a few hours a day?

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at September 22, 2006 10:06 AM

Janice, She said that he will get back to her either Monday or Tuesday to let her know if he is going to cosponsor the Bill.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at September 22, 2006 10:09 AM

Good Morning everyone...Lynda, Janice and Lily...looks like we are the early birds today...

Actually, I didn't sleep last night...was working on the bill and strategy stuff...I have a bone to pick with the title of the Bloodhorse article...
Sure we are up against a stiff deadline...but the article says...may not pass...while the title says it is on hold....

Nothing is impossible...Just ask Barbaro...
Whatever...I am not giving up or giving in...

I like an old Chinese proverb that goes something like this..."A journey of a thousand miles begins
with a single step..." (My apologies to the author for any misquotes) But I find the meaning very powerful at this time.

WE CAN DO THIS...

Posted by: Pamela at September 22, 2006 10:21 AM

If I recall correctly Sen. Martinez first went to Washington not as a Senator but as a Bush agency head appointee. That concerns me more than a bit.

Also, it still troubles me the AVMA continues it opposition to the bill. Press release following the house vote: http://www.avma.org/press/releases/060908_horse_slaughter.asp

It would trouble me even more if reason the horse farms and stables here in Florida are not endorsing the bill is because they are opposed to it, which might influence Sen. Martinez to go the wrong way. Many of the Kentucky farms are where they need to be and have endorsed the bill.

Posted by: Lily at September 22, 2006 10:22 AM

Pamela, read the article again, it does not say that it wont pass. It says that it "will most likely be put on hold until next year." This it quotes Senator John Ensign's Communications Director about it being next year, then it talks about the House Bill being passed and then what the bill would do.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at September 22, 2006 10:27 AM

Putting it off til next year means tens of thousands dead horses.

Morning carrots, skritches, studmuffins, etc. to our fearless leader, champion Barbaro Jackson, HOF, who continues to show the way!

FOBs, from Maid M (her department) with an assist from me:

Re: S1915. Keep up the efforts. All is not as it appears, today's no could well be tomorrow's (or next week's) yes and this morning's eclipse relates to events circa 9/7, the day the HR 503 was passed. [As somebody (Pamela? Sally?)wrote yesterday, Barbaro was "most likely" not going to make it in just about every article that was written about him after the setback.]

Civility rules. The more pleasant and understanding you are -- even if you disagree
completely with what's being said -- the more pleasantness and understanding you'll receive in return. Yesterday's successes had the common denominator of "polite, pleasant, friendly, non-polarized, there must be something we agree on, dogged determination." Absolutely it's a volatile, emotional issue, but alas, graphic, "how can you be so stupid not to see this" communiques are unlikely to win the hearts, minds and support of the very people you need, and in fact are quite detrimental, not least because they're both memorable -- and off-putting. [See Mary L's posts/recommendations from last night.]

Pam, Lily, Lynda,

I share your thinking on this. I, too, worry about the horses who will come to such a cruel end if this is postponed to next year. But if there are enough of us committed to the cause, we can always explore other ways - maybe a massive mailing campaign to the Belgian embassy with a threat to boycott all Belgian products in our country. I know you have to be very careful with boycotts - sometimes they hurt the innocent too, but I can't imagine anyone else would be hurt if all Americans refuse to buy Belgian chocolate.
Anyway - there are enough creative people here that ideas will surface.

Morning Barbaro, will check on your update later. Saw the beautiful portrait of you and Edgar. You certainly are a very photogenic beauty. We love you.Stay well. Thanks Alex.TGIF

Could someone please clarify the Belgium boycott (i.e. reason). Please, easy on the graphic details if possible.

One of my company's biggest selling items is Belgian chocolates which we will no longer sell if I could just get a bit more info. This would actually cost us tens of thousands in profit for the year, but I would gladly do this.

Thank you.

I dont even know what a Belgian Chocolate tastes like. I assume it's good chocolate.

Janice, waiting till next year just means we can hit the senators HARD. Make them wish they had of taken care of this before their break. Never ever give in or give up.

Mornin'Bobby! How's my big, handsome boy today? I'm sure you had a comfy night & are now eating a big hearty breakfast. Have a beautiful day & remember how much you are loved. Keep on healing! XXOO

Mike Rea goes home overnight & out to dinner. That is wonderful encouragement. Go Mike, Go!

Press on with the anti-slaughter bill. Nothing can stand in our way or dissuade us. We will be relentless!

Love & prayers to all for a beautiful FALL DAY! (Actually, last day of summer :>) )

Hoya, Bobbey! Brrr! It's cold, but with bright skies here in coastal CT this AM. May your day be a sunny one, sweet prince. Do you ever see the goats any more? Hugs, pets, & "scratches" - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita

#### Any more details on the proposed boycott of Belgium? Is this action to be restricted to Belgium or would it be extended to Japan & Franceas well? Brent & I had actually talked of trying to go to Belgium next year or in 2008. (His brother loves traveling to Belgium.) I'd gladly defer doing so and am willing to write a letter to the Tourist Board or Embassy, whichever or both. Please advise. ####

Bonnie, I mean that I did not see where it was verifiable that 'clerical error' had been corrected and the right bill had been delivered to the Senate, after last week's snafu of sending the wrong one.

Sweetie Barbaro, we have to wait a little longer today for the report from Michael. Hoping it is ACN . Last day of summer, so hope you get to go out to graze today. Heal and mend Barbaro. Butterfly kisses to you.

To Mike Rea, I hope you enjoy your overnighter this weekend. Camping out in the living room with the kids sounds like some very good medicine. You are one busy man!! God Bless you Mike!!!

Another day trying to move Senator Voinovich is the right direction.

To all Barbaro Fans, enjoy the last day of summer.

Update on the colt Salvation ############################################
Just got off the phone with Beth at the Grace Foundation North CA.
He is doing so well Beth said, this morning when she opened the stall to let him out of his stall to the paddock. He came out kicking and jumping all over the place. Acting so happy and full of him self.
He is eating great and eyes are bright. He played for a little while, then ran back in the stall looking for the little calf.

Benny was still sleeping in the hay. The little colt touched noses with the calf, like saying get up lets play.
Beth said Benny nurses on the colt's back hock. Said it looks so funny. Salvation doesn't seam to mind it.
Beth said to thank all of you all so much for your donations. They have received two hundred dollars with Pay Pale. Said it would help with feed and vet bills.

She also said someone at U Davis had called and said they would like to help the colt. Check his leg and health. Some one on this site works at Davis. I forget the name? But who ever you are thanks.
Beth said the colt will put his nose on her cheek, and nussal and nussal. Like giving her kisses

News 10 NBC came out today, going to do a article on him. Beth said it was funny, the camera guy got down to get a head shot of the colt's face. The colt ran over and put his nose on the camera. They interviewed Beth.

She said if you call your local channel 10 NBC news, they may air it in your town. It's going to come from KCRA NBC news 10. That would be great to help with the Slaughter bill! Don't you think?

Beth is a sweet lady and she is so happy the fans of Barbaro are helping.
She could not thank all of you enough.
The news 10 NBC there is 916-446-3333 if you're local 10 news wants to get the news clip.

She also said she hope to get to the Tim Woolley site soon to thank you all her self.
More pictures are coming later. Said she has been swamped with all the work lately.

Beth is calling the colt Salvation. Hope that gets on the news too.

Looked at the picture again this morning of Barbaro on the front page. It makes me laugh!

It doesn't matter what the Bloodhorse article says..I'm not stopping until both of my senators have co-sponsored the bill.

Posted by: Mary at September 22, 2006 11:53 AM

Good morning Bobby, Alex & everyone! Will anxiously await the morning update later this morning. Hope you had a good night, Bobby, and have a terrific day outside grazing in this beautiful weather!

RE: Anti-Slaughter legislation
And to Lisa Morin and Robyn,

I want to clarify so as not to cause a problem. I'm discouraged about the possibility of this vote not taking place until next year and mentioned a Belgian boycott (I didn't think of it but read that somewhere) as a possibility rather than just sitting doing nothing while waiting for Congress. However - I stressed that it must be thought about because boycotts are notorious for hurting the innocent as well. But as I said - there are so many creative people here that I'm sure we can come up with other strategies.

Janice

Posted by: Janice from Florida at September 22, 2006 11:57 AM

The article reflects what the politicans have planned - but we can change that.

I spoke to an aide in Senator Stevens office on 9/21. He is the chair of the Commerce committee, where the bill is presently pending, and he is a cosponsor. Despite the fact that he is a cosponsor, I was told that he does not presently plan to have the committee vote on the bill prior to the recess at the end of September. I asked that the aide convey to the Senator that I was very disappointed in his decision not the schedule a vote, and hoped that he would reconsider.

Stevens and Frist both need to contacted in their capacity as leaders in the Senate, not just their constituents:
Stevens as chair of the Commerce Committee, Frist as the Majority Leader of Senate, should be reminded that the agenda of the Commerce Committee and the Senate should reflect the issues the people want them to address, not special interests.

Okay, off my soapbox, here is the contact information. We really need to flood their offices with faxes and calls:

Senator Bill Frist, Senate Majority Leader
509 Hart Senate Office Building, Washington, DC 20510
202-224-3344; 202-228-1264 (fax)

Honorable Ted Stevens, United States Senate
522 Hart Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510
(202) 224-3004(202) 224-2354 FAX

There is still time for action to be taken - we need to get the message out! We need to make sure they understand we are not going away until the slaughter stops.

re: Anti Slaughterhouse issues

Just a few more thoughts - different ways to have the slaughterhouses closed

Law- what we're trying to do now

Stop the demand - won't happen - consumers of horsemeat obviously don't care

Financially impractical - this we can work on

Bad PR - this we can work on too.

Just some ideas - but I know all of you are so creative you can add more.

Good morning Barbaro, ANC that is just wonderful and makes it a Happy Friday! Keep up the good work and stay strong.

Does anyone know what the error was? If it was on paper, it can be fixed right away.

Well, whatever it is, we can't let is stop us.
My local new paper said that Bob Casey is ahead in the Senate race in Pa. So I think he will be getting and e-mail and a letter today from me.

Just called my local News, the guy who saids yes or no on airing a clip/video will not be in till 8 AM.
Was told they mostly cover local news. I told her I am Local, and I am working to pass this bill
S1915 and our Senators of Alabama are sitting on this bill and I want the people of Alabama to do something.
She didn't know anything about this, but she said when you call and talk to Kip. To let him know the house passed this bill and that the Senators of Alabama are not helping get this bill on the floor.
So be ready to let them know why it is local news to you.

I have not been reading the entire loops for a while, but wanted to let folks in Virginia know about another worthy, reputable horse rescue here, Eagle Hill Farms, http://www.eaglehillfarm.com/.

My husband and I have sponsored two foals and are planning on another one this winter. The owners are incredible folks, and "mom Annie" treats all of her adoptees like children. It is another rescue worthy of your consideration for contributions.

Also, keep hounding your elected reps and senators about the antislaughter legislation, ask friends and family in other states to write theirs or ask if you can write on their behalf. Thanks for the opportunity to post. Jean

So happy for Mike, a weekend home will be incredibly good medicine.

Good Morning Bobby and everyone,

ACN! ACN! ACN! How I never get tired of reading those words each morning!

Well it is TGIF (finally). What a week I have had LOL. A good way to cap off the week will be to send another goodie basket to NBC. I will get that done at lunch. It is a pretty neat feeling knowing that our boy is eating carrots and "scratchies" purchased by me.

########
Well, my Saturday biking in FH may be a wash as the storms that pounded the mid west last night bear down on the Delaware Valley. Just my luck as we all read of the stunning days at FH this week from Alex's updates.

In keeping with the TGIF theme, let me infuse some humor into the weekend:

If Horses Were in High School, What Cliques Would They Be In?

Quarter Horses: Definitely jocks. Strutting around flexing those muscles, showing off their butts...definitely jocks.

Thoroughbreds: Preppies. Sometimes athletes, never 'jocks'. Monogrammed blankets, leather halters, Nike eventer shoes, the latest custom trailer and tack. They are the "new money" rich.

Appaloosas: Could only be the stoners. They like to trip acid so they can watch their spots move.

Arabians: RAH! RAH! SIS BOOM BAH! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TEAM!! (need I say more?)

Shetland Ponies: Frightening, spiky hairdos, snotty attitudes and any color of the rainbow .... gotta be PUNKS. Some even sport tattoos.

Friesians: Big, buff, and always in black, they are the biker clique. Cigs hanging out of the corner of their mouths, dangerous glint in the eyes, daring anyone to cross their path.

Morgans: They're the nerdy teacher's pets, running around doing everything from yearbook to decorating the gym and ratting out the bikers, stoners and jocks. They have perpetual wedgies.

Drafts (all breeds): No real clique, they're just the big guys who sit in the back of the room and fart a lot (and then laugh). Who's going to STOP them?

Icelandics and Paso Finos: They're the little squirrely geeks who flit around a dance trying to fit in and fail miserably. The kind who wear Toughskins jeans from Sears (or would that be ripoff WeathaBeetas??).

Ahkle Tekl (Akle Takl? Ackle Tackle....!! Akhal Teke!!): Foreign exchange student(s). And no one can spell their names either.

Hackney Ponies: A breed this manic would have to be a band geek. Marching along with their knees and heads held high.....even going to the bathroom.

Warmbloods: Old Money Preppies, as opposed to the TBs who are new money preppies. All their tack is imported from Europe, they drink Perrier water and eat only organically grown feed. They look down on everyone and talk amongst themselves about summer in Paris and skiing in Gstad and wasn't it dreadful how provincial Spruce Meadows has become?

Cheers

ACN - Yippee! You ARE the Horse, Barbaro!

Alex - From your descriptions and pictures I have often compared Fair Hill to the visual of Newmarket I get from reading Dick Francis. It all sounds like heaven!

Thanks Alex for the updates and it must be wonderful seeing all the wildlife, etc.,..

Glad to hear Barbaro had ACN.

Saw the following article most of what we know but I thought i'd pass it along, (please bypass if already read)

http://www.sacbee.com/100/story/27518.html

Barbaro doing well, eating heartily

While the racing world lost champion Lost in the Fog to cancer this week, another four-legged superstar continues on his road to recovery.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro is making "excellent progress," according to Dr. Dean Richardson of the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.

Recuperating for four months in the center's intensive care unit, Barbaro now grazes daily outside and is showing signs of steady improvement.

His left hind foot -- which lost 80 percent of its hoof due to laminitis -- continues to improve. This week, doctors replaced its protective boot with bandages as the new hoof grows back.

His right hind leg, shattered in the Preakness on May 20, is mending well. Barbaro still wears a protective cast, which was last changed three weeks ago.

"We won't change it unless there is a reason to do so," Richardson said of the cast. "He is enjoying his daily excursions outside to graze and his appetite is excellent."

Owner Gretchen Jackson visits Barbaro daily. His friendly nips are another signal the 3-year-old colt is feeling better.

"He seems to have gone so much in the right direction," she told bloodhorse.com. "And he has never ceased from eating up a storm -- arms and legs included. He would like to grab your arm or leg or hand. He just is doing it all remarkably well."

Good morning, Barbaro and support group,
We check Barbaro's progress every day, affirm the praise for his owners, caregivers, and other team members, and hope this example of extraordinary courage and compassion influences all who are involved with horses (and especially with racing). We were delighted and impressed to watch Lost in the Fog's splendid victories on the Golden Gate video. Instead of donating online in Fog's honor, we're sending a contribution to the thoroughbred rescue operation that just purchased a portion of my family's farm. Keep up the great posts, all! Thank you, Tim and staff!!

Another good night for Barbaro--sweet music to my ears!!

I hope we all continue to work as hard as we can on getting this anti-slaughter bill out of the commerce committee and on to the floor for a vote. Bobby and Light in the Fog, if they could speak 'human', would be cheering us on in our efforts--Bobby from here on earth and the Fog from heaven!!

The bloodhorse article is not 'the last word' on this. The writer doesn't even mention that, in the week and a half prior to her article, the bill had gained 3 new co-sponsors!!!

We all have to flood the senators' offices with emails, calls, and faxes to make it a HOT issue!!

Keep fighting the good fight, and remember if you're MAILING your senators, to send letters to their LOCAL, rather than DC offices. news about the set back on the bill is stunning!!!

Some way different states are doing away with the S of horses. I am saying this because in the 80's there were many more S houses. So how was that done. And just in 1997 California passed a bill making it illegal. It is illegal in Texas but a federal loop hole was found. How did the other states CLOSE the loophole??? Not to mention the horses (which we all love) but the little town of Kaufman, it is said that their citizens cannot even go outside. The Belgium question was asked, and they are referred to because they own the plants, I know for sure that they own the Kaufman plant. According to Sandy K. they (Kaufman City gov.)have tried for years to close this plant down. It has had 29 water violations (don't know what period of time). If the government (federal loop hole that is allowing to be used by this Belgium company) is not worried about the CITIZENS OF A U S TOWN enough to help them then what makes us think that they will be concerned about the HORSES? I read that the plant doesn't even pay correct taxes. The town government has tried and been batteling this for years and years according to Sandy K. who lived there, I believe.

The reason is money and that is very hard to fight and we need to get the word out to the TEXAS Senators that we know who they are wanting to please, not the people that elected them but the special interest groups. Why is it better for a company to be in Texas, do what they do and have to ship it all the way BACK to Europe (Japan, France, and Belgium )???? I just wonder what breaks they are getting from our government that make it so rosey to do their horrible business on our horses and to ruin the lives directly of the people in Kaufman. My guess on the question is the obvious - more MONEY for the plant to operate here than in Belgium, money for SOMEONE else ? This situation continues getting over looked because of the more "serious problems" in the world today. But, we have always had serious world problems that for each generation were awful. Pearl Harbour was that generations equivlent of 9-11, that was handled but we did not stop trying to have a quality life. And that is what we are striving for here is quality of life for people and horses.

Keep getting the word out ( I am a 4th generation Texan and I did not know that this situation until it came up here on this site. However, I did know about the premarin mares.

Don't give up and lets come up with some ideas.

Lets give all our money to the horses for saving and no more donations to political campaigns.

Lets start rescue ranches in each state, buy all the horses and PUT THE PLANTS OUT OF BUSINESS.

We can dry up the source that the people selling their horses for money and S have and then their will be no place for them to take the horses.

Pray for guidance

First of all, let's not get discouraged by the bloodhorse article - it's one article. We need to keep pressing our senators to pass this before the session is over, and we sure will. They will know that we want this pushed through as soon as possible.

However, one thing I thought of is - wouldn't it be great if somehow we, as a country, or at least those of us opposed to slaughter, could save all the horses going to slaughter until 2007/till they come back from break - they say (and this is their biggest argument) that if they close the houses the horses will have no where to go and/or be neglected.

Well let's keep the houses from slaughtering any more by getting them rescued and adopted/in someones care. Yes, it will take a monumental effort on a lot of people's part, but Barbaro has shown us anything's possible if you persevere and believe.

Last I checked, going by last year's figures, we need to save about 90,000 horses, even less than that, as 2007 is only 4 or 5 months away, so let's say we need to save 45,000 (half a year's worth). Multiply 500 dollars to save a horse on average, you get 225,000 dollars that we would need to raise. We have raised over 7,000 dollars just "us" in less than a week for the Barbaro challenge. Think of what we could do if we save ALL the horses going to slaughter at the auction.

This would:

1. Put the slaughterhouses out of business - no horses, no money, no business.

2. Prove that we can take care of and save every horse that they say "we can't do" cause there are not enough of us able to rescue them or facilities to house them.

3. Would totally prove and negate any possible opposition that anyone in Congress could possibly think of when they do bring it up in session whenever that is.

4. Also, a lot of those on the Commerce Committee opposed to this are up for re-election. Let's get them out, and less oppostion when it would be brought up.

I say, yeah, we keep fighting and praying about this till they break session, but also keep that in mind, that if we rescue the horses from slaughter, then we cut their supply off, and they will just shut down because they'd have no revenue at all. Just something to think about.

I've been thinking about this for a few days now and thought now was a good time to post it. If by chance we don't get it to the floor in a few weeks, lets consider "Plan B". I think it could be done, I really, truly, do.

Barbaro has shown us anything is possible - if we believe and persevere.

Believe in miracles. Believe in Barbaro.

The first time I saw a picture a picture of Redaspen,[ two pictures of which was posted
on this web site,] I was immediately struck by the beauty of this big powerfully built
throughbreed and how much Redaspen reminded me of another big red horse,
"Big Red" [Secretariat]. I'm happy for Tim that she won the ninth at Laurel yesterday,
she not only won, but won in a convinceing fashion, going away, Redaspen is a wonderful looking horse with loads of talent, if she stays healthy, she might carve out a very sucessful racing career, akin to the
original "Big Red".

Sorry, my math was really off when getting the figure together of the money we need to raise :( . It's actually 22.5 million (ouch) sorry about that everyone. But I truly believe it can still be done. Anything is possible.

But I don't know if 45,000 is the figure we would be working from. I just averaged last year's into a half-year figure. I don't know if they are busier in the summer or winter...

Ryan and Kate:

I think you guys are TOTALLY on the right track. We need to come up with solutions and get them to the right people. I for one, am tired of the AVMA and AAEP still opposing the slaughter ban because of the potential for abuse and neglect. I think we need to start flooding their mailboxes with the suggestion that THEY take some responsibility and consider administering a fund to reimburse their veterinary members for their HUMANE euthanasia/disposal of these potential "unwanted" horses. AAHA--a similar veterinary organization--had NO trouble setting up a similar fund to reimburse their member veterinarians for treating heartworm-positive Katrina dogs (to the tune of over $250,000 in about 4 months time--pretty much your figures for horse rescue, Ryan). I have that full report from AAHA and intend to write a similar proposal to submit to AVMA and AAEP.

I also think you're right on with the idea of a massive fund-raising effort to keep these horses out of the hands of the killer buyers in the meantime. They outbid the sanctuaries and other legitimate buyers, so let's beat 'em at their own game. Look what we've done in just about a week for Miracle Horse Rescue! (And we haven't even tapped into potential large-scale donations yet!)

The Barbaro Effect rolls on. . .

##### Lost In the Fog

I"m Free
Dont Grieve for me, for now I'm Free
I'm following the path God laid for me
I took His hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all

I could not stay another day
To run, to race, to work or play
Challenges left undone must stay that way
I found that place at the close of the day

If my parting has left a void,
then fill it with remembered joy
A championship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Ah yes, these things I too will miss

Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
My life's been full, I savored much
Good fans, good times, my beloved grooms touch

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
dont lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts and share with me
God wanted me now, "He set me Free"

One last thing while I'm on a roll here. . .pressure needs to be put on Wyeth--the makers of Premarin AND parent company of FORT DODGE ANIMAL HEALTH to be accountable for the lives of their horses. This is a HUGE company that could certainly afford to set up their own sanctuary for retired PMU mares and foals, OR make sure they are TRULY humanely euthanized, rather than trying to squeeze a few more dollars in profit from these poor animals by sending them to slaughter. Last I checked, Fort Dodge manufactures euthanasia solution, so kind of seems like they could put it use! If anyone wants a list of FD equine products so you can discontinue using them, I'll be happy to post.
Accountability for these animals would eliminate many of them going to slaughter in the first place. . .

Who may call their senators? After seeing the video.
When I talk to Jo at Fox15 news. He didn’t know our Alabama House of Representatives voted No on HR 503. Didn’t know the bill passed. Nor did he know our Alabama Senators in Alabama are planning to vote No on the bill S1915. I don’t think he is interested in the horses. But he was interested in the senators.

(Have not done any work yet this morning) ;)

I was thinking, when we do get this passed whether it's in a few weeks or in 5 or 6 months - we are going to have to plan to rescue a lot of horses - it can be done - but as someone (and sorry for not confirming who) posted previously, we should open more rescues/facilities to help those already open.

I was on a website yesterday that actually has training/information for people who want to start a rescue of their own - I'm sure there are more of them. The one I saw was in Maryland. Here's the link: Days End Farm Horse Rescue: http://www.defhr.org/

While there are many rescue facilities out there that probably could handle the immediate increase when they close the houses, it couldn't hurt to have more out there to help. :)

Sorry for posting so much, just had a lot I wanted to say.

Well its bordered by some public grazing land and this morning it was so foggy we barely saw the huge looming cows until we were almost on top of them. They mustv gotten through a fence. Neverthless my dog freaked! I was so glad I hadnt let him off leash! Just a Friday morning story...reading the early morning track updates reminds me of our walks and little adventures we have.

Very distressed over your portrayal of Arabians...
They are the love of my life, and my last two are gone now. I've never seen another breed equal them in intelligence, spirit, or love of people. However each is entitled to his own opinion but I would love to be able to change yours. But know I can't. My Baraka could if only she were here. Actually I enjoyed reading your lists, but can't debate now, because I have to fight my own Senators !!

I'm getting a cauliflower ear like the boxers of old, because of pressing the phone to my ear every day, all day. I hate speaker phones!

Barbaro , I love your ACN . Now do a comfortable day and make us all happy , big guy. We love you.

JUST WANTED TO SHARE, BUT WE KNEW THIS ALREADY

Dear Ms. Wilhelm:

Thank you for your letter regarding S. 1915, the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. As you are well aware, S. 1915 would amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption. You will be happy to know that I am a co-sponsor of S. 1915. This bill recently passes the House of Representatives, and I am hopeful it will be debated on the Senate floor soon.

Throughout my legislative career I have maintained a strong commitment to protecting the rights of animals. I am a co-sponsor of S. 304, the Sportsmanship in Hunting Act which amends the federal criminal code to prohibit knowingly transferring, transporting, or possessing a confined exotic animal for purposes of allowing the killing or injuring of that animal for entertainment or the collection of a trophy.

I was also proud to support the passage of P.L. 106-152, a law banning the interstate trade in "crush videos." Under this law, it is illegal to engage in the interstate commercial distribution of materials depicting animal cruelty, specifically the crushing of small animals by women wearing high-heeled shoes.

In recognition of my efforts on behalf animal rights, the Humane Society of the United States has awarded my voting record on animal welfare legislation a score of 100%. Although I am proud of the accomplishments made on behalf of animal rights in the 108th Congress, I am aware that there are still many animal welfare issues remaining to be addressed. Rest assured that during the 109th Congress, I remain strongly committed to protecting animal rights.

Again, thank you for contacting me. If my office can be of any assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to contact me again.

I am reposting Mirth's post from yesterday:

Ara,

Shall I keep 'reminding' Hillary because she's my senator (and doesn't know I can't vote)?

If S 1915 doesn't make it this year, we WILL regroup and find ways to save as many horses as possible. There's enough expertise and talent on this board to work miracles. We've done so for Barbaro.

What an honour it is to know all of you.

I want to add my voice to this post. Although I can't vote, I want to say that I will join in any regrouping that occurs if this bill doesn't pass this go 'round. And the earlier we start the better. Love the idea of the tourism boycotts to Texas and, I think, the other state was Illinois, where the slaughterhouses are. So many things can be done. It is just BEYOND ME that these slaughterhouses don't pay their fair share of taxes (I think someone said that). I don't know how someone like me could research that but it really rankled me!

Just some more basic math (promise this will be correct and positive).

Let's say 45,000 horses need to be rescued in the next six months. And let's say a horse rescue can hold 45 horses. (I know not all can probably do this but on average) That's just 1,000 rescues in the entire country. There's 50 states, 20 in each state is not out of the question. I don't know how many there are presently, but if we can get 2000 open or even 3000 in the entire country, then each one would only need to hold/take care of 15-20 horses.

We can surely take care of the horses that would be going to slaughter (another argument by the opposition), and let's keep in mind, many of the horses would be retrained and sold to people who want to adopt them, allowing the rescue to help more horses in the future.

When planning any kind of demo or contact with Congress, try to find some of the people whose horses have been stolen, and see if they'll join in.

I think it would be effective if people whose horses were stolen, whether or not they know for sure the horses ended up in slaughter, came with pictures of their horses in good health, so they could say "Does this look like an abused, neglected, starving horse? [name of horse] certainly wasn't unwanted. But like too many fine, healthy horses, [name of horse] was stolen to feed foreign appetites for horse meat." or something similar.

The problem I have, as other Texas posters have mentioned above, is that our Senators (and dang near all our Reps) are sellouts to big money and big business. Hutchinson cares about money more than she cares about people, let alone horses. Unless you're a lobbyist from Halliburton or something, a major campaign contributor with the right connections, you might as well be a cowflop under her boot. (Yes, I'm bitter. Y'all don't know how many times, on how many issues, I've tried to communicate with both Senators and my local Rep, only to get these smarmy self-serving canned replies back from their staffers. But that's another rant.)

Still...I've tried. Another email went off today.

Posted by: Anita MA at September 22, 2006 3:15 PM

Ryan good points, also there will be ALOT less horses stolen (no slaughterhouses to sell them to.) The rescues have to spend money at auctions to outbid slaughter house buyers, which that could be used to take care of the horses.

Congrats Tim & RedAspen!!!

Wow - How impressive was RedAspen's win yesterday???

These were not just any fillies she was up against. As a matter of fact, RedAspen raced against Michael Matz's, Baby Melody. So now you know these are not just any fillies ;)

For those who missed it, RedAspen really performed yesterday! She went 3 wide against Baby Melody and tired her out and then she even went 4 wide again on the final turn and headed for home, RedAspen not only held off a strong late charge by Cozy Gain but she managed to put some distance in there during her awesome drive for the win.

I was blown away. This is absolutely terrific for Tim Woolley. I wish I did bet on races, she paid a sweet $19.20 for the win. Very nice run.. Can't say enough about it. I am very excited about her next race.

Way to go Tim! You must be so proud of her. Any ideas on where she will go from here?? Again, congrats! This is a very important win for your stable. Enjoy. You deserve it.

I have what are probably dumb questions. You know how we microchip our dogs and supposedly they can never be euthanized if they end up in a pound or lab. Plus you can find the owner. Is there a reason people can't do this with their horses? At least stolen horses could be returned to their owners. Also, I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that the owner that sold to a kill buyer didn't get much for the horse. Is there a way to get to owners directly without going thru the auction so that maybe it is less expensive and risky to get the horse. A massive education to sell to rescue places rather than kill buyers?

Attn Barbaro lovers!

You will love this video. It's an interview with Laura Hillenbrand (author of Seabiscuit). She talks about how great Barbaro's KD was..second only to Secretariats. She talks about looking for a horse like Barbaro all of her life. She also says she thinks he's the only horse in history to win the KD without being urged (whip). Alex, anyone, can you clarify that?

The video is long (21min) but so worth it. She also has wonderful things to say about Michael Matz and the way he trained Barbaro and also how she thought the Jackson's decision to save Barbaro was the right one.

To All,

When you are contacting your senators, or mine, please bring up the fact of stolen horses, from loving and responsible owners. When I spoke to Alexander's and Frist's staff, they were not aware there were so many. Don't know if that will help, but it sure won't hurt.

I just called Sen. Stevens office and talked to Brad who was given my call when I said I was calling about the horse slaughter ban and asked for an aide re Animal Rights.

I identified myself as a friend and fan of Barbaro the racehorse, mentioned the website, and he promised to pass on my request that S 1915 get out of Committee and onto the Senate floor for a vote. He reconfirmed that Sen. Stevens is a cosponsor.

Here's the good part: he specifically said the Committee is working on 1915 - it is not just sitting there, they are processing it. I think he is saying they are determining whether to send it out "as is" (unamended as passed 9/7 by the House as HR 503) or whether to suggest amendments. I think this is good news.

I wanted to share the FULL PAGE ad in the Daily Racing Form today:
GREED IS A TERMINAL DISEASE

The Farm Animal Welfare Coalition bases its pro-horse slaughter position on a concern for the fate of all the so-called "unwanted horses."
The coalition consists of such "horseman" as The National Pork Producer's Council, the National Milk Producer's Federation and the National Cattleman's Beef Association.
They have to come up with a rationale for horse slaughter that sounded sensitive and sympathetic, although their logic has made them the object of derision in the press. Follow their line of reasoning and a chicken never had a better friend that Colonel Sanders.
Each year tens of thousands of horses go through the auction ring. Some horses sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars per head, others for just hundreds of dollars per head. But they all have one thing in common: by definition, they are all "unwanted" by the seller and wanted by the buyers.
SO WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE IS ONE THING:
MONEY
Those horses unfortunate enough to be unwanted at a sufficiently high price fall prey to the bottom feeders, the killer buyers who pick them up on the cheap and send them to slaughter for human consumption. It's a nefarious business that the above mentioned coalition so zealously defends. We don't know about you, but we'd send The Farm Animal Welfare Coalition back to the drawing board in their efforts to justify the injustifiable.

Ad paid for by the National Horse Protection Coalition.

I have my own travel company and I mentioned a couple days ago, I have notified everyone we will not book ANY travel to Belgium, Texas or Illinois until the slaughter houses are closed. I am working with other travel companies to join the boycott. Also when our clients ask why we are doing this, we email, fax or hand out flyers.

I believe the House bill getting delayed by 10 DAYS to the Senate because of the "Clerical Error" was no mistake. We are dealing with a dirty business being kept alive by the dirty people.

I think you are all right about the rescue organizations. I have my own rescued thoroughbreds and volunteer at 2 other rescues and we have raised a tremendous amount of money to keep helping more horses. IT CAN BE DONE if we all work together if this does not get to the floor next week.

##### Synthetic form of Premarin information from the fda.gov website:

WHAT IS CENESTIN?
Cenestin is the brand name of a synthetic conjugated estrogens product, a new drug product manufactured by Duramed Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

WHAT IS CENESTIN MADE OF?
Cenestin is made of nine synthetic estrogen components. These synthetic components are chemically derived from a compound obtained from plant material.

IS CENESTIN THE SAME AS PREMARIN? HOW IS CENESTIN DIFFERENT FROM PREMARIN?
No, Cenestin is not the same as Premarin. However, both Cenestin and Premarin are conjugated estrogens drug products. Cenestin is a synthetic product chemically derived from a compound obtained from plant material; Premarin is made from pregnant mares’ urine. Cenestin and Premarin are both approved for the treatment of vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause. However, Cenestin is not approved for long-term uses, such as the prevention of osteoporosis. Premarin is approved for certain long-term uses, including the prevention of osteporosis.

the exact thing happened with Sen. Burr
they called back very soon ! I've been trying to

is leaning toward the bill. Burr has not released a position yet. Sounded like something he had to pass from his body. ( Sorry )

I asked Stephanie of MHR to post this info - which I first learned from her during the HR 503 campaign - but she just pulled/tore a muscle hoisting a bale of hay and I don't know when she'll be able to get to it - so here goes; I've said it before and I'll say it again, but IMO this is a very important fact that might sway some Senator.

The rationale for opposition to the slaughter ban centers around, what will happen to the unslaughtered. As we are seeing, Rescue organizations around the country can step up, given private funding. But the Senators are not hearing from Rescue organizations, and I want to explain why, and how this impacts on our cause.

The Senators are not hearing from Horse Rescue Organizations in favor of the slaughter ban --
they could tell the Senators how each of their facilities can absorb X number of horses, and that private donations support the horses who cannot be adopted out -- because as NFP 501(c)(3)'s, the rescue organizations are PROHIBITED BY FEDERAL LAW FROM LOBBYING. It's as simple as that. Please consider passing this info on to the Senators you call.

Tell the Senators you talk to, that this is why they are not hearing from horse rescue organizations, who would confirm that they can/will take the unslaughtered.

We need to be the voice of the rescue organizations, no less than we need to be the voice of the horses.

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH.

A man and his ever-nagging wife went on vacation to Jerusalem ...

While they were there, the wife passed away. The undertaker told the husband, "You can have her shipped home for $5,000, or you can bury her here, in the Holy Land , for $150."

The man thought about it and told him he would just have her shipped home.

The undertaker asked, "Why would you spend $5,000 to ship your wife home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and you would spend only $150?"

The man replied, "Long ago a man died here, was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead.

I JUST CAN'T TAKE THE CHANCE!"

Susan O you have mail

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at September 22, 2006 4:18 PM

Anita, Ryan, Barb M & All,

If S 1915 doesn't pass, we will find ways to save horses - one at a time - until it does. There must be hundreds (thousands?) of rescue org'ns all around this country. We just need to locate them. Or open them. There's one an hour from my home that I didn't know about until 2 weeks ago. I'm sponsoring a horse there.

We will throw our considerable might into boycotts, harrassing (politely) the media, and everything else we can think of to raise public awareness. If all Americans were aware of this barbarity there'd be rioting in the streets.

Plan 'B' is what we will organize around if S 1915 fails. In fact we've already begun. There are thousands of us with unfathomable smarts and passion. The slaughter plants are on borrowed time.

WE CAN DO THIS. AND WE WILL.

Yes Mirth, I agree! I accidentally tripped on my train ride home last night and all of my Salvation flyers fell on each of the train seats. It brought tears to my eyes, people were keeping them! They didn't just throw them on the ground!!!

C.Jaffe,

So, let me get this straight, rescue organizations are prohibited by law from lobbying? Does that mean someone from a horse rescue organization can't call her/his senator and ask they vote for S1915?
A non profit such as this should be able to be heard!

Also does anyone here know if Dr. Richardson, Michael Matz, those at Fair Hill support S 1915?

Hi fellow Barbaromaniacs,

DON'T GIVE UP! STAY FOCUSED ON OUR PURPOSE--JUST LIKE BARBARO. Evil can only triumph when good people do nothing. Bobby is our hero. Every horse, every animal deserves love and compassion. Like Lost In The Fog--I grieve for him, but am comforted that he was cared for until his very last breath here on earth.

Jen--bless you. What a beautiful poem. I lost a friend to breast cancer this summer. What a fitting tribute for Foggy.

Barb M--I'm with you. Big money has big power. "Clerical errors" are easy ways out.

Love and scratchies to Barbaro--heal, great one, grow that hoof. Cyberhugs to all my fellow Fans of Barbaro.

Peace,

Good morning Alex and the Barbaro family!

Alex, loved that article about George Washington. He surely is an individual! I'll be rooting for him!

Hayyy Barbaro sweetie!

Heard you had ACN!! gosh, you don't know how those words just lift me up and starts my day off right. Hope you have a great day today, lotsa goodies and grazing. Now let's hear a whuffle cuz here comes the song

Eat your carrots every day
Booties gone so you can play!

Sunshine, breezes, grass everywhere
There is nothing to compare

Grow hoof grow, heal leg heal!
That's become our daily appeal

Keep on doing like you are
You're our bright and shining star!

Will be back later to check up on you. Hugs and smoochies!

I'm so glad to see that nobody is giving up getting that bill passed. The media is letting us down, a lot of senators (including my own) are disregarding our pleas. But somehow, someway, we will prevail! If the bill, heaven forbid! doesn't make it on to the floor, then we have to lay out new strategies for saving horses.

Posted by: Toby at September 22, 2006 4:43 PM

Lord God, wrap S1915 in Divine Love and Divine Order. Open the heart of every member of the Senate to clearly hear the voice of the horse, and feel the Magnificent Spirit of the horse. May each member be immediately compelled to move S1915 to the floor in a right and perfect way, and then vote with their hearts and their conscience for the highest good of all.

Good Afternoon Alex an everyone.
###back home late last night.... when we came in I quickly posted a hello....slept too long this morning and just now am getting to the posts. We did about 32 hours of driving in the past 7 days....I'm still simulating those road bumps.

Mary S. Thanks for your help in defining the prayer for protection while I was in Baltimore. I'm looking the author up later and gleaming what I can from the web about him........
Mary .....the Love of God surrounds YOU!! I appreciate your posts while my family goes through a trying time. You exibit such love and compassion through your posts...thank you again and God bless.

After breezing through the posts, I see that I am way out of the mainstream news.....will have to catch up.
Did I read Alex's post correctly that the horse bill has been put on hold? I'm not surprised with all the IMPORTANT junk that they have to get done in Washington like salary increases for the Senate etc......SAD!!!!

Bobbycakes another great night and day! One of my only pleasures right now is seeing those words.
I'll be back later to read and possibly post.
Glad to be back with all you "maniacs" :)

From the conclusion of my email to Senator Frist:

I urge you to move this bill out of committee now, and call for a vote on the Senate floor. A year's delay would mean another 90,000 horses killed; and once Americans learned of this assault upon their beloved icon, they would be doubly outraged to find that the Senate had the opportunity to stop the slaughter this year, and let it slip by.

Good Morning everyone!

thanks for the updates, Alex! Redaspen is a girl?? whoops...she is BIG. and gorgeous....

I'm happy to hear of yet another comfortable night for our boy, and continue to pray for those days to continue, although I wonder what I'm going to do with my time when he's off to his home. Will probably be driving everybody at TWR absolutely nuts about your trainees :)

Will check in later. Still waiting to hear back from my senator here on the status of the pending matters to be heard this month. No verification yet on postponement of S1915. There's way too much at stake to settle for postponement. I was told politely that there are urgent matters before the Senate. I understand that but S1915 is urgent too. We'll just keep on keepin' on

Love to everyone,

On the subject of slaughter I don't live all that far from the Grace Foundation (a couple three hours--which by CA time is nothing). One of the parents where I work has a daughter who this weekend is going to Sacramento to adopt a neglected horse. I asked this parent to come tell me where her daughter is adopting from next week. Apparently this horse is from Nevada... .

New family at work. They tell me they are all animal lovers in this family. I can't imagine that they'd go this far from home... .

I will keep in informed as I find out. At least one horse is being saved.

Very smoky today in the Bay Area. There is a fire somewhere and high winds. I hope we don't have another firestorm... .

Bonnie MacRaith at September 22, 2006 04:34 PM posted in response to mine of September 22, 2006 04:16 PM, re horse rescues being forbidden, by law, to lobby.

C.Jaffe,

So, let me get this straight, rescue organizations are prohibited by law from lobbying? Does that mean someone from a horse rescue organization can't call her/his senator and ask they vote for S1915?

A non profit such as this should be able to be heard! [end of Bonnie's post re this topic]

Bonnie, as I said, this is a fact. Not For Profit 501(c)(3)'s are prohibited by federal law from lobbying. Stephanie of MHR told me that she has her HUSBAND, who is not an officer of MHR, call her legislators. (It is Miracle Horse Rescue Inc., a federally recognized NFP 501(c)(3).)

Stephanie of MHR alerted me to this legal nightmare; if you want details re what law it is, her phone number is listed on some of her posts at TWF re the In Honor of Barbaro Challenge [there's a new challenge up, in honor of The Fog), or you can go to the MHR website which is linked to the site that comes up if you click on my name below (scroll down to bottom of page that comes up, there is a hyperlink to MHR).

Yet another law that seems inane and barbaric -

and that is why WE MUST BE THE VOICE OF THE RESCUE ORGANIZATIONS, NO LESS THAN WE MUST BE THE VOICE OF THE HORSES.

Bottom line - tell your Senator's aide that this is why they do not hear from the rescue orgs. It may just sway someone.

I have my second call in to the City Secretary of the town of Kaufman to see if something I read about them trying to close the plant Dallas Crown down ( don't know how or why) by Sept 30,2006. It seems like all the things they have tried thus far have failed so this may not even matter.

Surely, if there is an attorney or money for an attorney out here an injunction or something can be done to stop the process while the situation is worked out. I am sure there is something legal that can be figured out if only for 1 day or 1 week. Anyone with legal connections??? Where to put the money from donations toward saving the horses or towards legal counsel to close down a plant that could be inviolation of laws. The government (Federal Loop hole) must be giving them some incentive to do business here in the US.

BarbM - great comments and dead on - so proud of the stance you are taking with your business. What courage, I will book a trip through you when I can!!!!!

Sam I Am - Microchip, great idea, they probally do the expensive horses. They should.

Ryan - thank you so much for all your ideas, they are great

Elizabeth - my sentiments exactly and it is so SAD that money takes precedent for those kind of people over everything - BUT THEY CANNOT TAKE IT WITH THEM ! And they sell their souls for it here on earth.

Dawn - those words abuse and neglect are just buzz words to make the people feel better about the murder of horses. These people have no feeling or hearts. And they surround themselves with people like them and they all make each other feel good, you know like the Emperor has no clothers childs story. Only an innocent child speaks out.

I can tell you this much - I confirmed that this is so, during phone calling sessions campaigning for HR 503; the aides to several Reps acknowledged this, and one, who at first said "WHAAA?" put me on hold while he checked with somebody, then returned and acknowledged it as well. I suppose it is to prevent shennanigans involving donations to NFP's in exchange for promises of lobbying; it could be abused, and not all NFP's are legit.

Pls contact Stephanie at MHR for details about this prohibition. She may be able to refer you to something explaining it. Click on my name below, then scroll down to bottom of page that comes up, and there is MHR hyperlink that has her phone and email. Pls contact her. CJ in Hammond IN

OK! Couldn't help myself. Blame it on Jazz! ;-) This week has been so intense, I wanted to inject a little more humor to help keep us balanced and centered. Sorry it's so long.

Feature this: Barbaro’s Personal Take on What it Means to be a Race Horse

OK, here’s the deal. First you’re born. And, everyone makes such a big fuss about how beautiful you are, and how proud all you relatives would be. You get to follow momma around for a while, learning the ropes, so to speak. You get to make new friends and play a lot for a while, but then your people tell you to wash your face, stand up straight, and smile for the nice prospective new owners.

Then you get to take a vacation to a nice new home, where the big kids are all teaching these special people how to accompany us on a run. You try to teach them a trick or two, and by golly, they end up in the dirt. It takes a while for all this training.

Later, after they’ve treated you to some really decent spa living, you get your own pony. It’s great to have someone to talk to. Humans are so cute, but pretty stubborn sometimes . . . they can get a little nippy. Best advice I can give the new guys . . . give the humans a little of what they want. Pretend to be what they call “well-behaved,” if you have to. They come around.

Then, they get so excited when you run. Good grief, that’s what I do. Doesn’t seem to take much to fire up a human. They have little watches and timers and stuff. I just want the wind in my mane and an absolutely clear view in front of me. Some one else can watch my back.

You win a few races for them . . . well, duh! Just be prepared when they try to dress you up in those prickly blankets made of flowers. What are they thinking? Bless their little hearts.

Then, you reach the time for a major change. Actually, it hurt a little. But “no pain, no gain.” And, besides, I had my favorite jockey to remind me (just in case I might have forgotten) to stand up straight . . . glad I picked up on that “lesson.” And, all my people were there. Gosh, what a scene. Com’on folks. Let’s get on with it. “I can deal!”

Then, you get to take a ride in a big van that kind of hugs you all the way to the new place. It’s kind if like a camp. You get lots of rest, and every now and then, you get to go swimming or play in the bounce swings. If you want, you can eavesdrop on some interesting scientific stuff, but that gets boring after a while. Anyway, you get these cool new things on your leg . . . makes it pretty comfy, actually. And, you get this fabulous Nike (or something) shoe on the other foot. I am just too hansom for my height! And, best of all, you get all these treats. Well, you also get tons of attention from some pretty special people (they almost seem to speak “horse”) . . . but, you get all these treats!

It just tickled me how excited my humans got when they started to take me outside. They made a big deal about my silver bowl of grass. They’re even happy when I don’t need the Nike anymore. It’s nice to see my humans happy.

Not really sure what tomorrow will bring, but I prefer to live in the now. And, NOW life is good. I heard that a bunch of carrot people (what will they think of next) are rallying around me on an issue designed to save some of my relatives from a bad, bad end. Momma never told me about this part of being a racehorse. Makes me feel proud. Humans are trainable (even if they do resort to speaking in abbreviations like ACN, and BIB, and MM! Funny language . . . human. )

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I, for one, think being a racehorse is terrific. When it’s all said and done, you have have this great big beautiful family . . . and lots of treats. From my perspective, being a racehorse is good. I’d recommend it to anyone.

And, someday, I’ll tell my kids all about it.

Hi Annie -

Hi Cheryl G and Pamela -

You guys must be hung over (from not sleeping could be your excuse).

Weather here is a little better, I can go outside and not melt, it's probably around 104 (feels like a sauna).

Guys write checks for 76 mil? They don't know what checks are, they just open their wallets.

My husband had a student open his wallet several and offer him several thousands (AED) in exchange for a quiz (not a test or exam), my husband refused it and the student turned to me and offered me the money.

Sometimes they just want to give us gifts because they like us and don't want anything in return. The gifts they tire to give us OM! Almost makes us want to pass out.

Promised my husband when S1915 gets passed, I will spend a little more time.

We went to his work and spent 50 mins. faxing, then went to eat, but found it difficult thinking about the horses, whether they were eating or not, the conditions, what they were experiencing and had to get back to TWR and see how things were going. Feel so much better.

Was I have withdrawals from TWR?

Someone asked earlier if it would be a good idea to write to the AAEP and remind them of what their mission statements says. I emailed them this week as well as the Amer. Horse Council (AHC) and sent them both the Barbara Reeves stats. I think it's a great idea for everyone here to also write to them. Vet practices around the country have taken the AAEP stance and the AHC needs to know they are NOT representing the majority of individual horse owners from the people. Lots of other horse organizations look to these orgs for direction and have just blindly followed the thinking that if slaughter is banned there will be an influx of unwanted, abused and neglected horses. I also think it's a great idea to start hammering Merck and Fort Dodge on the PMU farms too. It's unconsionable to expect a horse (pregnant to boot) to stand in a tie stall 24/7. Not to mention babies sent to slaughter.

Colorado senators have not responded to my emails and faxes yet. We could use some help with others calling their offices, too (Allard and Salazar).

Posted by: Debbie T, Colorado at September 22, 2006 7:47 PM

I'll post a message on the flyer thread so it gets "bumped" to the top again. When a thread is not used it often "seems to disappear" but there is a drop down where you can go back more than it shows or even select "show all". You'll see it in the top left frame. The flyers we made up are under Salvation Flyer to Fax to Senate.

Jen and anyone else who wanted the flyers or couldn't find the thread on the forums for them, I posted a message in it so it would be "bumped" back to the top.

Just go under Anti-Slaughter Issues and you'll see the thread named "Salvation Flyer to Fax to Senate". Go to the end of the thread and there's two attachments in message 59 that I posted which will bring you to the flyers themselves. Just click on the the two links and you can save it to your computer and/or print them. Hope that helps.

Thank you from today's posts:
Friar Tuck, you, Maid Marion and I need to talk re celestial influences. I find you are in sync with my insights...there is strength in numbers of those with knowledge of this type of energy. Your support means a lot to me.

Same thanks for your kindness, compassion and support to Bobbie B and Lindann. Today has been a wonderful day. I feel a lot better.

Margie, another vigil is definitely a great idea. The more I witness the power of prayer, the more in awe I am of this group.

Lynnette, the situation I had to resolve was solved today. So October 14th at Fair Hill is ON!!!! Yahoo! I'll bring coffee and donuts. Alex, is 8 am. OK???? Lynnette you can e-mail me at lyn.gilbert@gmail.com.

For Steve - I know this is a heartbreak for you. I will send energy to BD for his peaceful transition and to you to ease your sorrow. BD will be greeted at the Rainbow Bridge by so many loving animal spirits...LITF, Gallant Secret, St. Liam, Alcor (the polar bear) and my crew - Beemer, Romana,Mara, Josephine, Shadow, Paco. He will never be alone.

Must go. The last few days have been exhausting and I need some down time in prep for a very busy weekend.

Take care, everybody. You are the best.

Dawn in Omaha,

Yes, hormonal therapy can help with osteoporosis, however, there are other sources for this than Premarin which requires mares to be stall bound. Your doctor would know but I know of one at least called estriol that is not made by those poor horses.

I don't know if anyone is familiar with Glenn Beck but he is a talk show host on the radio and also has a show on HNN. I have become a great fan of his because he isn't afraid to tell it like it is. He has become the 3rd most listened talk show host in America. He has had several senators on his program including John McCain and Rick Santorum and wasn't afraid to ask them the tough questions. I think we could get him to address the horse slaughter issue on his programs if enough of us contact him. He reads all of his e-mails personally. The contact information is as follows:

Bonnie--Someone just cut out a very small chunk of my original post, which was actually a response to a question asked earlier today about Premarin alternatives. Trust me--Premarin is the LAST drug I'll take should HRT become necessary--in fact I posted earlier today about the fact that Wyeth should be taking responsibility for the PMU mares and foals they are producing, considering they are the parent company of Fort Dodge ANIMAL Health! Thanks for your concern.

I just want to make a point about Salvation. this foal is very small and under weight for his age. the person who was responsible for his birth is just as sick as those who buys for slaughter. That is abuse. I raise horses and he is not even close to where he should be at growth wise. I wish we could find out who bred this foal and take it out on him. Jen

Dawn,

Yes, now I just saw all your posts. There are lots of alternatives to Premarin and as someone said the reason it is so prevalent is because it is commercially pushed big time. My doctor had handfuls of "samples", I said no thanks. Thanks for bringing this up, this is a huge business. Exposing them would help make a dent in this whole issue.

I am going to call Wyeth Lab. who makes Premarin.

Bonnie--Great job contacting Wyeth and Audubon.
I frankly don't think many doctors prescribing Premarin even have a clue how it is produced. I know my OB surgeon didn't! It can be tough to try to "educate" a doctor, but maybe that's something for all of us of the female persuasion to work toward!

BELIEVE

JEN He's probably a premarin foal.

Also yesterday I sent money to Marcy for the flowers for LITF, very nice people there!

ALSO I went to GGFields website and they mentioned making donations to Glen Ellen Farms(retirement home for TB). Mr Aleo and Gilchrist strongly support this retirement home for TB. So, I will make a memorial donation to them also. I know it will be used for a good cause. Their website is glenellenfarms.com. They also mention LITF on their website.

Haven't had time to read posts today. Just wanted to say I received a letter from Hutch. "S1915 was referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, on which I serve. As the Committee considers this legislation, you may be certain I will keep your views in mind."

So basically - nothing. I do not believe this woman is going to vote for S1915. Remember her aide said it is not "politically correct" here. Did we have a Texas "blast" today?? Will check posts after I finish my last appointment.

Has anyone considered writing or calling College and University campus newspapers? The school year has started across the US and with concise information, we can expose the slaughter issue to a population with enormous net experience. They'll understand the issue immediately, and devote energy toward political pressure.

where the Crown Slaughterhouse is located, and I
thought you might be interested in what she said.

I am crying as I write...this hurts so much, but
I feel that if you know, that it will encourage
you to stay focused, do only what will work, don't
squander any energy on things that won't work.

The mayor said that there are 400 horses stand-
ing in the pens RIGHT NOW. They are GOOD horses.
Horses that are in GOOD condtion.

Kill days are Monday and Thursday, so the ones
there right now will be murdered on Monday.

USDA slaughter numbers are WAY UP she said.

I told her what is going on over here on TWR. That there are many voices now raising a mighty protest. I told her that the people here are gaining all the time on becoming knowledgable on this issue and have long since been mobilized for action. That for the most part we are doing as the mayor suggested.

THIS IS IMPORTANT
She wants us to call and keep calling especially
Texas, but also, she reiterated that we need to
CALL ALL SENATORS, no matter whether they are ours
or not. CALL, CALL, CALL, AND KEEP CALLING SOME
MORE...She sees that as our MAIN task

And passing out flyer/packets with information to
everyone you can find. People right around you
are not aware that horse slaughter is going on.
So, you don't have to go very far from where you
live to make people aware.

My husband has been in town all day passing out
our flyer/packets to people he's never seen be-
fore. They are horrified...they didn't know.
By the way, he began his conversations with
these perfect strangers with, "do you have
horses"?...and the conversation took off from
there, and he was able to not only talk to them,
but give them everything they needed to know,
facts and figures...phone # for senators, and
other info. to help them get the job done. I will
admit that our copy bill is hefty, but it's
worth it. There are 400 horses standing at
Kaufman...I'm not complaining.

PLEASE, hear the Mayor's message and heed it.
Do what WILL work. DO IT NOW...and keep doing it.
...and pray.

I know that everyone is working hard..don't give
up now...time is very short.

God Bless the 400 horses standing at Kaufman

Thank you very much.

Anyone near Kaufman that can do and protest this weekend???? Please someone - 400 horses - thats alot of horsemeat!!! Sorry - but its true. Does anyone know someone in Texas that can help us out??? How about the Dallas Cowboys? I personally don't know any of them - but perhaps Monday morning they can be there to protest - I know I am saying the improbable - but we need to do something this weekend to help the horses. Wish we knew Laura Bush!

Sorry if I'm rambling but I'm really upset right now.

We need to do exactly what the mayor asks. If you
can't pass out flyers and info. then CALL...and vice versa. Remember, it is the senators that WILL decide the fate of future horses standing in that pen in Kaufman. Barring a miracle, we have to understand that the 400 standing there now, will be lost. But let's do what the mayor asks
so that soon the pens at Kaufman will be empty
FOREVER.

I don't know how to say it any differently, but
we MUST stick to what works. Shelley A. has said
that all along...and the mayor of Kaufman agrees.

400 horses! That just pisses me off. Most of them are probably Quarter Horses like April. I have not been able to keep up with the discussion board and all of the posts but I did see something where the pro-slaughter congressmen and women think the slaughter houses are a good way to handle ill-mannered horses. It is my experience that in 99% of ill-mannered horses are a result of mishandling by owners and/or trainers. So the horses have to pay the price with their lives!

It's very interesting that you asked about college newspapers.

This morning I had this brainstorm, that one of my best friend's daughters is a college senior working for the local public university's tv news station. She also knows all of the newspaper kids. I called her mom up right away. The daughter is away at a wedding, but the mom agreed with me that the university students would be hugely receptive to this issue. She had me email her my most informative letter, plus a bunch of links, and she will share it all with her daughter when she gets home.

You must be picking up my thoughts....

The mayor of Kaufman TX was at the rally asking for help. She was told that the ONLY way this could be done is by the federal government.

She has tried everything possible but, because of the interstate commerce, her state CANNOT help her.
She is a lovely woman who wants the world to know that her community is appalled by this practice and that is has hurt her town. Businesses have left and new ones won't come there because of the slaughter house.

She has lawyers trying but they always find loopholes. And of course, we know where the state of TX stands.

So I agree.....we MUST stay focused and do what we have been told. It MUST be passed on the federal level. There is NO other way.

I know you are sick of hearing this from me but we are FOOT SOLDIERS and should be following the orders of the leaders. Our orders are to pass the word, make phone calls and send letters. We must stick to the task at hand.

Your post re: Crown S/H ( can't even write out the words;

I'm sick. absolutely sick. this makes me feel so inadequate. I can see those sweet innocent animals, wondering what has happened? Why are they not in their homes, with their loved ones? Have we become so sick and depraved as a society that no creature is sparred from being considered "disposable"? Are we so morally disfunctional we can't fathom that someone who has been a loving companion should become a source of revenue because that companion is no longer "convenient"? Having worked in small animal rescue, having heard the excuses that are given for surrenduring small animals, I can only imagine that of those 400 animals who are sound and in good condition, are victims of stupid, irresponsible owners who just suddenly realized that another mouth to feed might cut into the "luxuries" part of their budgets. IT JUST MAKES ME FURIOUS!!

Maybe I'm projecting a lot, but I don't think that my suspicions are too far off the mark in a lot of cases. I've got friends in TX who have already climbed on board the bandwagon. I'm gonna drop them notes right now. This is so horrifying.

Susan O and everyone...I just assumed that everyone saw the feature NIGHTLINE did on the slaughterhouse that Mayor Kaufman is talking about....It showed it...It is not some huge, clean modern plant...it is a hole in the wall nasty facility where you can peek through the fence and see the horses in the trucks, in the lines and even...getting the bolt...
I am sorry to upset anyone...I forgot that those of us who saw it the night before the HOUSE vote
had not related the story the next day because of the vote that was taking place...
Mayor Kaufman was in the piece and said "That's it across the street"...It was really a dirt road alleyway...Beautiful horses were in the backs of open trailers...you could reach out and pet them...
One lady in the piece went there to retrieve her horses that she had sold to a person who lied to her about where they were going...
guys...THEY WOULDN'T LET HER GET HER HORSES...eventhough the were days from Slaughter...

I believe that the govt. knows exactly what is
going on. You have to keep in mind that when
big bucks are involved it is very easy to
"hear no evil...see no evil". Don't you
believe that if they knew, a decent person
would do everything they could to stop it
wouldn't they? I think they would. But
that has never happened, and that's why
the slaughterhouses are still running.

Whether there are 400 horses standing in a
slaughter pen in Kaufman, Texas is no never
mind for the men in Washington. This is
way, way down on their list of important
things...they are working on some other
dirty little secrets. We have dealt with
this group on other matters, and unfortun-
ately what we found out was not pretty,
and eye opening. And that's why I spend

No, we will never get through to the staunch supporters of slaughter. They don't really care what goes on. They have their own business interests and agendas. They are lost souls.

That's why it's so urgent that we get all the others. There are MANY who will support this bill. Most are decent people that, when it is put out to vote, will not vote to slaughter horses. But it will mean nothing if we can't get it to a vote. Convincing them to be co-sponsors is the key. Getting a majority (51)of co-sponsors will be the way to get it to a vote.

Just be grateful that we don't need them ALL. All we need is a majority.

You would not see the senators. You have to make an appointment with the aide that is handling this matter. That's how it works.

People like Mrs. Jackson speak directly to the powers to be. But the constituents are handled by the aides.
As I've said before, don't underestimate the power of the aide. The HSUS course that I took in DC told us that the aides have a tremendous amount of influence. They gather the information and then meet with the senators to let them know what the constituents have to say and what they want from them.

The opinion of the aide is more often the way the senator will go. They told us to make the aides our friends and not to alienate them by acting like we are upset because we "only" got them and not the senator.

Thought I'd come to the source and ask you to pray for my mother's cat, Daisy. Daisy is a gray mostly-Persian with the personality of a kitten in a middle-aged body. She started to get neuropathy last night, and my mom was up with her until four-thirty this morning, comforting her. The vet tested her and says she has lymphoma, which often responds very favorably to treatment in cats. This will sound familiar - we're going to use steroids to shrink the tumor in her thoracic cavity. (Shades of Lost in the Fog.) Cats either respond very very well, and she could start feeling better overnight and her neuropathy could start to go away, or they don't respond, in which case we'd have to think of other options. Just like LITF.

So I hope you will all pray for Daisy and keep her in your thoughts. Shrink, tumor, shrink. Respond, Daisy, respond. My mom's 85 and she loves Daisy so much - crying as I write this.

I'm going to go light a candle and if I can do it, she'll be under "Daisy".

Thanks,

Jake

Good Evening, Fans of Barbaro!

I'm going to call it an early night, but I wanted to tell you I've been signing petitions, e-mailing for S1915. Just knowing about the 400 is breaking my heart.

SusanO, with my last penny, I'd bail you out...you are the second person I've been in contact with on TWR that has died or should have died...and they are now here. Isn't that a miracle???? A lot of us have gotten a second chance to do some good on this planet and what a wonderful karma that is. We are so blessed to be here, now.

Lou Ann and Linda A and Marilyn/CA, thank you so much for your prayers, support and kindness. I'm actually doing much better today than yesterday. Each day will be better now that the negativity and blocks have been removed and transformed.

LITF, may the Long Time Sun shine forever.

Barbaro, tomorrow is bath day...sleep deep, dream dreams of going home. Champion Heart may be born yet...:)

Gotta get some sleep. Its been a rough week.

You are all the greatest.

Good evening "fans of Barbaro"

Very distressing information today. I can't even read it all. It will stay with me and I won't be able to sleep. I feel so helpless. Phone calls, flyers, faxes, emails talking to relatives, co-workers, pet store owners, feed store owners and everything else I've done hasn't changed a thing - the horses are still being slaughtered. This is so frustrating. I'm glad that there are many others on this board committed to closing these S.H. I certainly am and will continue on until they are closed.

Thanks, Pamela. There are a couple of parallels with Lost in the Fog. Harry Aleo is 86, and my mom's almost 86. And they're using medication to shrink the tumor.

But I have to tell you, Daisy can't run a lick!

She has plenty of other good qualities, though. :)

I think that what you say has great
validity. There are a lot of people
who really don't know. Some kind of
know, but just assume (hope) that
the horses are humanely euthanized.
I liken it to the govt. Most of us
are busy and don' pay much attention
to what the boys in Washington are
up to. They represent and speak
for us, even though most of
America doesn't even know who the
vice-president is, much less the
more complicated nuances of govt.
The people of Texas, and I am
mainly talking about agri. be-
cause that is what I know, just
let Cattle Raiser, or AQHA make
the plans and they go along with
the "party line", not knowing
anything about it. The vet
associations are the same.
Most of the vets themselves have
very little idea just WHAT their
associations are promoting.
The lesson is that we all need
to take a more active role in
finding out what it's all about.

I'm from Texas and I have done everything I knew to reach the senators, Hutchison and Cornyn. If they don't have a conscience, how can we expect any better from the people who live with this malignancy in their midst? There has to be a way to stop this!

if you can find info on Texas Senators and post here, would help, Phone numbers/fax and or email addys.

Worst thing we can do is act on emotion, that is what those against this bill are saying that this is a emotional issue and not a common sense one. That we are not thinking about the so called welfare of "unwanted, sick, agressive" horses.

We need to keep balance, be well enformed and convincing.

If I could I would travel to Texas to meet with the government there and Mayor of Kauffman, but I think our voices need to be heard at the FEDERAL level also.

The issue is Slaughter of horses for HUMAN CONSUMPTION. That is what we are against. We know good horses are being sent to slaughter, stolen horses are going to slaughter, etc. We need to work on getting these Senators to Co-sign the bill. if there are enough cosponsors of the bill, it will be GREAT and may not have to be brought up for a vote, as it will show majority.

CALL, EMAIL, FAX, VISIT your State office!!!

We are the FANS OF BARBARO and we WILL BE HEARD!!!

my daughter will be posting later as she had a GREAT Visit at the Ohio Government offices today. She heard some very positive words, and yet some not so positives things.

Oh Flyers are best used for the Public campaign to bring awareness, and not sent to Senators, she was told that they are just being tossed. But she has heard some good things from ones she hwas been posting around the campus area.

of course they won't give them back they are not honorable people and besides they pay 5-30 cents a pound and sell it for $20 a pound.

per Duane Furright " in 2004 The U S Senate passed Resolution 452 declaring December 13 as the National Day of the Horse. The purpose of this day is to encourage the people of the United States to be mindfulof the conrribution of horses to the economy, history and character of the United States.
So why then are we allowing foreign interests to butcher horses and ship their meat over seas?
Horse slaughter interests have powerful allies in Congress who hold key positions that have for the past 3 years held up bills in committee".

I Wanna Run Free is a song by Maria Daines at www.Maria-daines.com/music-19.html especially for the support of the horse, according to Willie Nelson it is great.

Another site that has a list of people and organizations for anti is this site www.saplonline.org/horses.htm #### this site has some GRAPHIC PICTURES be very careful!!!

Can we find out just who these powerful allies are?

You are making a difference and the fact that you are taking action means you are not helpless! The fact that every single one of us is writing, faxing, calling and spreading the word about S1915 is adding to the pressure. And that's a good thing!

I can only fax letters from work and they are few and far between but the main thing is that I send them! I have concentrated my efforts on the CST Committee, Bill Frist, and specifically those Committee members up for re-election.

I am weighing in, and maybe Shelley will in
awhile. This is all we can do. Besides
calling, we have to talk to people. Engage
them in conversation. It is time conuming,
just ask my poor husband, who was out most
of the day making contacts. But, most people never dreamed of such a thing as
horse slaughter. And it is up to us, in
our OWN spheres of influence to expose it
so people will have a chance to do some-
thing. If they don't know they can't act.
And, in our case, we have made it possible
for the people we give the packets to, to
have everything they will need to know in
the packet. Telephone numbers of senators,
facts and figures page from Roxann, and all
that they will need to make the calls.
Mary L. mentioned last night that she was
told by one senators office that some
people had been calling in and they were
NOT informed. It was as if someone just
told them to call and they complied. This
is not effective at all. We need to know
our subject and say it. I think that
Shelley is suggesting that we always be
polite and stay withing the bounds of
socially acceptable behaviour..and that
is right advice. Sorry to have taken up
so much room.

Hi, Barbaro Team: I was reading the posts about the 400 horses in Dallas Crown.....

I had posted a comment a few days after HR503 was passed. I remembering asking anyone that once the slaughter houses become aware of this victory for HR503, won't they start purchasing MORE HORSES to slaughter?

My question was answered............

Father, please protect these magnificent horses from the horrible fate that they are facing....Please provide us with a "MIRACLE" to save these horses.

Thank you Father.....

Susan O

I know it is tough, if you have done all you can with senators, try raising awareness more locally, contact 4-H groups, race tracks/trainers/owners.. write letter to the editor of your paper about the bill, contact radio and tv stations in your area. The more people know the better it will be ! My daughter has been doing that for me, and she now has the power of 45,000 students at Ohio State, as she is posting flyers around, talking to other vet students, message boards.

Awareness and more voices will help!!!

Thanks Ara for what you are doing!! I want to do more but I have pushed myself too much tonight with posting and some emails I have sent out, but I did because I am so into this bill and saving the horses taht a little extra pain on my part is nothing to what they are goin thru.

But if you can email me the addys of Texas contacts to me (locarumo@gmail.com) I have some saved emails I can use to send them .. but will do tomorrow as I really really need to stop pushing myself and typing with my bum shoulder/arm... but heck worth it after i saw your posting on Dallas crown... plus daughter will be here soon to change my dressing and help me get ready for night wear, and she will not be happy to see what I have done, ha ha ha... :)

Posted by: Mary L Ohio at September 23, 2006 12:19 AM

My daughter was just sitting quietly drawing while I was doing a little computer work.

She came over and asked if I wanted to see what she had made for me.

I cannot believe, in light of the 400, that she drew a pen of horses and hay outside the pen to feed them all. She has never drawn anything like this before.

I have not said a word about the 400, there is no way she could have known about them.

I'm taking this as a sign.

Ara, just made the comments onn flyers aas i saw on message board some were faxing flyers to senators.. okay to fax to supporters or to people you wan tto convince but they are just getting trashed in government offices . Find a great 4h grouop to post them around town, so far my daughter and her friends at OSU have posted 150 flyers, and that is her money she spent to have them printed up.. but she now has a "silent" partner that is going to print up 500 more to put around town. Columbus is big. she is amazed how many people do NOT now about this issue OR that horses are being slaughtered for food overseas..

I will get the message board she has set up so you can see how mnay upset students there are

This is the first time I've been able to get on board all day, I'm so out of the loop since school has started. I just read the article Alex linked about the anti-slaughter bill probably being held back this year. The last line, "One of the main concerns of those who oppose the bill is what will happen to horses previously headed for slaughter," makes me so mad! So lets just keep kiling these innocent creatures. I cannot believe the reasoning, or lack of! I am not into politics at all, so I don't know if we have reached a real impass or not. The article did not sound like there was much of a chance left for this year. We've sent our E-mails, letters, faxes, made phone calls, signed petitions, maybe all we have left is fervent prayer .... we know that works! A vigil for this would be good. Maybe it's planned, I don't know if that already been planned? What lse can be done?

FOLKS, LET'S SEND SOME FAXES TO THE MEATCUTTERS AND RELATED LOCALS IN THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE TOWNS AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.

Another thought--NOT trying to offend.
If you're religious, and slaughter offends your religious beliefs, DON"T HESITATE to use when contacting the Senate.

They will listen more if they understand that we are not just a bunch of left-wing tree huggers (whom I admire, but it isn't effective with politicians these days).

SUSAN E.

I second the bad idea version. As I have said
so many times, and Shelley has said, and Mary L.
has said, we have to stick closely to the program that works. I wish that I could say it
in a way that makes sense to more folks. We are the foot soldiers, and we have to do what has been outlined for us so many times just today.

Mrs. Jackson is doing all that she can in her
sphere of influence, just like we are supposed
to be doing in ours.

I get tired too, calling these senators who
sound less than delighted, mild understatement,
to hear my voice. But, I know I have to do it,
and then I remember what's riding on it. I
figure I'll have plenty of time to rest in
eternity. Whomever reads this...let's all
just stick to the program...

Ara,

Butting in here, but I have to get off my computer soon.

What about the universities in Texas? Young people are often passionate advocates of causes. Would contacting the student newspapers help spread the word? Disseminating a lot of flyers? Perhaps they would organize a protest at the Texas S-plants, in particular the one at Kaufmann? I'd be happy to donate to the cost of flyers.

Good evening Bobby--It must have been a beautiful day for grazing. I'm glad to hear how good you feel & that you always have lots of loving company. Now have a good restful night of healing & awaken fresh as a daisy in the morning. Love you lots, Bobby. Nite nite XXOO Lots of love & prayers. You're the greatest!

Good luck & safe running for George Washington tomorrow. He sounds like the kind of horse I'd love to work with, as I always had a lot of success with horses like him. Interesting personality & temperament!

Good night wonderful Barbaro & all my fellow fans!

This could be a good idea it seems to me.
Someone would have to contact the school
newspaper and broach it to them. Tell
them what it's about and see if they are
any anywise interested. What do you think
about that as a starting place? They are
probably unaware just like the rest of
America...and now that you bring it up,
there a bunch of other schools that we
could the same thing.

Debbie L.A. Your 11:51 am post has warmed my heart. I wish that NBC had that on video. Anyway, thanks for giving me a chance to smile through my tears. As Ara advised, I'm going to channel my anger and grief into productive action...fax, call, email, and hand out flyers. Gotta be thick-skinned around here (NY)--many people don't want to give you the time of day, but that's OK b/c if I can get through to one person, then it's worth it.

God Bless the 400, my heart goes out to you magnificent creatures.

God Bless Barbaro.

I'm assuming there is no way we could watch George Washington race? Can you get us a photo? I guess because of the Barbaro connection, I'd love to see him.

Praise God for your continued healing. I pray believing and expecting therewill continue to be good reports for you tomorrow.

Hiya, Bobbey! Tomorrow is the first day of Autumn AND it's splish/splash day for you as well. May you revel in your extra-special grooming, sweet prince. Please trust that you are loved and revered by so many people! Hugs, pets, & "scratches" - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita

#### Sending healing thoughts to Daisy the Cat.

Luke, so sorry to read of BDude's situation. Trust me, a beloved pet's spirit never truly leaves one's side.

Can anyone describe for me what a "Nicker Maker" treat is? Never heard of it before reading Alie's note today.

Congrats to Lisa on the nine pups. My first Husky, Natasha, was delivered of six pups via emergency C-section due to a perforated uterus. What lovely pups they were and Tash was a great Mum.

Barb M. - Is the boycott exclusively focused on Belgium or does it include Japan & France?

Annie in TX - Perhaps someone besides the mayor in that town in TX could contact Robin Roberts & Diane Sawyer at ABC. Robin seems to genuinely get a kick out of Barbaro. And Diane is a native of Louisville, KY. Just a suggestion, perhaps they would take up the story. I am devastated to read about that ghastly slaughterhouse and shall probably have nightmares. What a sick world! ####

Fall is upon us Barbaro. It seems like yesterday I heard "And here comes Barbaro, the undeafeated Barbaro" You are a miracle everyday and a very special gift from God. Have a good weekend of healing.

Remembering you Lost in the Fog, your legacy lives on.

Good luck to all who are racing this weekend

Good Evening, Fans of Barbaro!

Susan H - am sending energy to you for your upcoming surgery and for your healing.

C. Jaffe - another "second chance" person. This is starting to get interesting.

Lisa - your daughter's drawing is giving me chills. Its almost like the horses are talking to her. Should we set up a candle group on gratefulness.org? Call it the 400? I don't know how to set it up...anybody know????

Susan O - let me know where the penny is to be sent. When the SH's are shut down permanently, I'm going down and personally clear the energy from the locations. I've been visualizing the ceremony all night. All of you are welcome to add your energy and prayers with me.

J Carson Black - prayers for you, your mom and the beautiful Daisy. This is the perfect place to ask for prayer.

#####
Sally - Stormy and Windy. What can I say and where do I start. Stormy is wearing the cribbing collar and he looks totally different. He's starting to put on weight, does NOT crib anymore. He's even standing differently - more balanced. He looks different each time I get up there. I lunged him for the first time 11 days ago (first time for me, anyway) and it was exhilarating. He was loving the exercise. Willow and I set up a ring in one of the pastures and we'll work him there so he can get some muscle in his hind legs. Windy is the most loving, sweet horse I've come across in a while. When I got there today, they both were at the fence just watching me come to them and the love I felt from them was overpowering. Windy just came to me and kept sending love to me. Who needs valium when one is around a horse???? His healing abilties are astounding to me. He is going to help a lot of people. I know this.
#####

Anyway, dear Fans of Barbaro, I need some sleep.
More tomorrow after the powwow.

Take care, everybody.

Healing and Peace,
Lyn Gilbert

I'm sorry that I don't know a thing about TX, but how about putting up a message tomorrow morning to ask for help in finding and contacting the universities? Maybe the Kaufmann mayor would have some ideas. Could be tens of thousands of students might get behind S 1915.

Now I must sign off. Again, thanks for the tremendous work you're doing here. And I'm serious about helping with the cost of flyers. Just let me know, okay? Email me at: meadow1209@yahoo.com.

When calling the senators, (ALL OF THEM),
you are suppsed to ask for the

AID FOR ANIMAL RIGHTS ISSUES

I am calling to ask you to please ask senator
Frist to put senate bill S-1915 on the FAST
track to the senate for a vote BEFORE you
recess.

I am against horse slaughter in the United States,
and I am asking that you ask the senator to do
whatever is in his powr to get S-1915 out of
committee and passed by the senate IMMEDIATELY.

Remember Frist and Stevens are the heads of the
commerce committee and they could move the bill
in five seconds if they wanted. We are supposed
to continue to call them and get others to do
same.

When you are talking to the other senators you
can say the same thing, only you are asking them
to CO-SPONSOR bill, if they're not already.
There is a list someplace on discussion telling
you who is on board already, and it would make
a good impression if you already know if he is
or isn't a co-sponsor.

Ask them to co-sponsor and to urge Frist and
Stevens to move the bill on to the senate for a
vote BEFORE they recess.

Again, tell him that you are opposed, let them
know that you know that it is illegal, and you
don't like foreigner owning it, paying no $5.00
in Texas. One MAIN point to use is that you are
opposed to using horsemeat for human consumption.
With these talking point, and whatever else you
already know, he will know that you are familiar
with your subject which is IMPORTANT. We cannot
just call and say someone told us to call..and
tell them to vote on it.
This gives you a nice, little conversation that
lets them know that you have half an idea of
what you're talking about. Be pleasant, be
cordial...some people when talking to Texas
have told them about the boycott of everything
Texas by some people...the aid that heard that
sounded taken aback the other day...said he
hadn't heard that...but he sounded struck by it.
It got his attention. And all of this can be
said with poise and calmness.

Now, do a little practice, I have it written
in big letters in front of me, just for a re-
minder in case I go blank. Make it converssa-
tional, not memeorized. And GO GET 'EM'. Let
us know how it goes...and keep on calling...
especially TEXAS...and FRIST...

Hope this is beneficial.

Buddy Barbaro,

Guess you're sawing logs by now, but I have to come in and say goodnight to you, and I'll be really quiet. I'm so proud and thankful that you have tacked on another week of happy, healthy and healing days.
I feel that I have been running in circles all week, trying to get just one little glimmer of hope from the powers that be in DC. But like you Champ, I am not a quitter, and I'm never gonna give up until we get this issue resolved. There are too many counting on us to do this. So, dear buddy, keep on the sunny side, keep leading us with your grace, and we will follow you in a right and positive direction.

Rest well, Majestic Prince, tomorrow will be another day of beautiful beginnings, and a new hope for all of us.

Heavenly Father, continue to surround our dear Barbaro, with your loving, healing light, and hold him safe in your loving arms.

Dr. Dean and the medical staff of NBC, my heartfelt appreciation and deepest gratitude for the expert skill and loving care you have given our dear friend.

Just a thought - let's don't forget about Illinois. We seem to be concentrating on Texas which is great, but there is another nasty little place we should think of boycotting also.

THat means Chicago, O'Hare airport and others, all the places in Illinois. I guess this is correct that there is a slaughter house in Illinois ? I don't know this personally , so correct me if I'm wrong. I'm probably too late here to reach many of you, so I will repost this tomorrow.

Good night Barbaro. Your friends are fighting as hard as we can to save your friends. And we will win , I can't promise you when, but I promise you that we will.

We all love you , big horse. Take care , have another comfortable night and be ready for a big Saturday with guests, a bath , and grazing. Bad weather is coming in soon so get out soon as you can.

Take heart everyone. We can beat them. Cockroaches run when exposed to the light. And through Barbaro we are going to have the light.

Barbaro , you had me at hello.

You made such a difference in his life during his last weeks. He was blessed to have had you in his life, as we were all blessed to have witnessed his magificence. He truly graced us with his presence and I for one, will never forget him.

Good night sweet Barbaro. Time to settle in and get a good night's healing sleep. Pleasant dreams honey. I pray that you're comfy and happy and ready to take on another day. Hugs, kisses and nuzzlies to you big guy. I sure do love you Barbaro!

There will be miracles...

Just a thought - let's don't forget about Illinois. We seem to be concentrating on Texas which is great, but there is another nasty little place we should think of boycotting also
_____________________________________

I am concentrating on what the mayor of Kaufman
told me today regarding Texas. We really have to
hit them hard because they are totally entrenched
in their stance. LOTS OF VOICES need to be ringing
their phones off the hook.

The mayor also said that we should be calling ALL
senators in ALL states...not just our own. The
senators need to start to get nervous about how
many people are phoning...they're not used to it.
We have to let them KNOW that decent Americans
don't like it and will not tolerate it..politely,
always.

The 3 slaughterhouses are in Fort Worth, Texas,
Kaufman, Texas, and DeKalb, Illinois.

And, Illinois IS one of the states that we need
to contact, and let our voices be heard. All
states need to be contacted, and contacted again, until someone gives us word that time is up. Get as many people as you can to do it also.

The reason Texas needs to be especially targeted
is because they are so bull headed on the subject.
Lot's of money is at stake here, and the old
saying, "them thats got the gold, makes the rules"
or something close to that!! But, it fits here.

Hope that this helped you a little bit.

GOD BLESS YOU, and the mighty effort you are
putting forth for the lives of our beautiful horses. I am deeply, deeply moved by your guts,
and your selflessness. To me, this is what
America is supposed to be about. Somewhere
along the way we seem to have lost our way
as evidenced by the existence of slaugher-
houses in our land. But, it appears that one
horse is leading us back into the light a-
again. Barbaro has caused us to unearth the
cruel practice that we are all now fighting.
We are not just fighting to end slaughter-
houses in America, but we are also fight-
ing the kind of unholy spririt that could
permit it..for to permit it, is to participate
in it. And we are choosing not to permit it.

I hope you will post your message again through-
out the day, to make sure that everyone sees it.
We can use it when talking to senators. I think
all senators should be told it is happening.
Perhaps you will also put it on discussion, too.

You are very brave and I admire what you are
doing. Thank you so much, keep on going, and

Prayers coming your way for little Daisy, and for your mom. I know all to well about those persians who are really kittens in grown cats' clothes. They are so special. I'll pray that Daisy's vet's hands are guided by God and she'll be healed.

If I may make a suggestion before hitting the hay.....I know we are all upset about Texas but remember they only have two senators, the same as every other state. Don't waste to much energy on those that you CANNOT change. Instead, go after the other states where we can make a difference. And there are many of them. Many of the senators have good records on animal right issues and may just need those calls to give them a little push to become co-sponsors.

We don't need them ALL. Just a majority. If we place to much emphasis on Texas we could be wasting a lot of valuable time and loosing site of all the senators that we do have a good chance of getting on board.

This is probably too late to get a response but I was challenged on saying that horse slaughter is illegal. To be honest I had just seen that posted here a number of times and couldn't site a source. What law makes it illegal in case someone asks again. Thanks.

The congress passed a law several years ago, the way I understand it, that said the govt. could no longer pay the USDA inspectors that worked there. So, the Belgians decided to just pay the inspectors themselves, so it was thwarting the will of the congress...and that makes it ILLEGAL.

If anyone has something to add, or wants to
correct this, please do...as it an imortant
part of our talking points when talking to
senators.

I live in Fort Worth. Beltex, one of the 3 US slaughterhouses, is right here in my city. Our Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison already supports the legislation in the Senate. The other Texas Senator, John Cornyn, is the one you need to concentrate on. He currently opposes the bill. He has higher political aspirations, so he may be attuned to hearing voices from around the country. Good luck, everyone.

Daisy has my prayers and so does your mother also. I sure can "relate" with that "C" word. Daisy has great people that love her and now has the Barbaro Glow to give her some peace and love. I also offer a prayer for you to help both in this difficult time.

We are such great animal lovers here!! Who ever does not understand the power and the passion and the devotion we have with all animals, do not have a pet of their own or have a empty and lonely soul. My life would be so empty and difficult if I did not have my animals around me, be it domestic or the glorious wild life

Posted by: Mary L Ohio at September 23, 2006 4:09 AM

It is only illegal in California because they passed their own legislation.
The federal bill that was passed last year was just to the stop federal funding to pay the inspectors. But through a loophole, they were able to hire private inspectors. That may just have made the situation worse.

Great Suggestion, and I agree with what you said. Dewine in Ohio is a Animal Activist and is REAL CLOSE to being a co-sponser. Voinovich needs some work and says he "supports" but we need CO-Sponsers

so we need to see who supports the bill but has not become a co-sponser and ask them to consider being a co-sponser.

Deb WI. is there a list somewhere of who supports and who is sponser and not ? or anyone else that can find the information. I would go look but my evening pain meds are kicking in

Re: S1915 - One other point that might mean something to some senators:
The USDA has basically gone around the will of Congress as expressed last year. Congress meant to cut off the funding for inspections, which would effectively end horse slaughter for human consumption. But the USDA (and slaughter plant ownership) found a loophole. This means the Congress had to spend time and effort this year on a new bill that would effectively do what they meant to do last time. A brief excerpt from an email from Senator Barack Obama, D-IL mentions this point:
"Late last year, Congress made it clear that it does not support the commercial sale of horse meat abroad...." "The amendment" (eliminating funding for federal USDA inspections) "which I voted for, passed the Senate by a vote of 68 to 29 and was eventually enacted into law."
"In response, however, the USDA...announced that it will continue performing inspections at horse slaughterhouses by charging the slaughterhouse companies a fee-for-service beginning March 10, 2006. I view this initiative by the Administration as nothing more than a brazen maneuver to circumvent the clear intent of Congress."

If nothing else, they might want to make a point that when they make a law reflecting their will and the will of the people, they expect it to be a law...not to be sidestepped by another branch of government. It seems a waste of taxpayers' and their representatives' time to have to go back to the drawing board to achieve the original purpose. Just some thoughts if they will help.

Yes, there is a list on the forum from Mrs. Jackson's information. I'll find it tomorrow.

Posted by: shelleyA at September 23, 2006 4:17 AM

Someone else probably already thought of this. I haven't been able to be on site today...

ANYWAY...while extremely furious and anguished at the kill factories stepping up the pace, I am heartened that they are surely doing so because they are very worried they'll be shut down soon.

They are nervous, they fear this bill will pass, and we have them on the run.

Stay strong and keep fighting, everyone.

I can't get Kaufman's Crown S/H out of my head.
I can't get those 400 out of my head. As I wrote earlier, I attribute a lot of this to human stupidity, failure to accept responsibility and failure to respect the lives of those who ask for nothing but the care these people supposedly commit to when they take a horse into their lives.

I'm not much at writing verse, but this sort of came to me, for the Kaufman 400 and for all those like them who were once loved and cherished companions

**************************************************

Please come back for me….I don’t like it here

You loaded me in the trailer..as you have hundreds of times…
We have ridden the trails, the meadows, the beaches, quiet roads, quiet days…
You didn’t stay with me this day.. You left me here in this place….
Please come back for me,…I don’t like it here

There are many like me…did you think I needed their company?
So many..so close, so warm, yet some shiver…
Some look frightened..some tired…some bewildered, like me
Please come back for me…I’m frightened too

We’ve been together for so long..I can’t help but look for you..
I want to see you stroll back, bridle and lead in hand to take me away…
I promise I’ll never resist the trailer ever again…
Please come back for me..

Your children wove their tiny fingers through my mane…
They sat on my back, their laughter like bright sunshine…
It was long ago, they’ve gone on with their own lives..
Do I have no more purpose in yours?

I promise to stay well..I won’t eat so much…
If you keep your commitment to me that you swore to when I was young..
Love me, feed me well, I’ll do my part..I won’t colic, I won’t founder, I swear..
Please come back for me..I don’t think I can live without you

There are men here who look strange, as though they know things..
Some are gruff, some look sad…it’s just a job that they do
It’s not a good place, I don’t know why…but I know
Please come back for me…I know you will

The days go on…You don’t come…I’m so frightened…so scared
I’m tired, but I can’t lie down…I can’t lie in warm sweet-smelling straw
The smells here are bad…there’s no comfort here, no rest, no love
Did I betray you? Disappoint you? Please forgive me..come back for me...I love you still

Ara--thank you so much for all you've done and for the valuable information you've given us.
Barb--way to go! Money talks!

Since the slaughter industry as a whole employs many illegal aliens, I'm sure the horse slaughter plants are no different. It'd sure be nice to arrange a visit from some INS agents next Monday and Thursday! (By the way, for a real eye-opener on the slaughter industry and those how employees are treated, pick up a copy of the book "Fast Food Nation".)

My heart is breaking for the mayor of Kaufman and for those 400 innocent horses. I feel in my heart that Barbaro has brought us together for a reason--maybe many reasons--and we will keep on until we win this fight. I think a vigil for the 400 should be part of our prayers tomorrow night.

Bless Barbaro. Bless the 400. BELIEVE

Thank you.

Posted by: Gloria at September 23, 2006 4:25 AM

Thanks for responding to my question re horse slaughter being illegal.

Does anyone know what the current number of co-sponsors is? The last I heard it was 21 but I'm hoping it's better than that.

I was googling to find out more about why someone would co-sponsor when they don't support the bill. One article I read made it sound like it's a 'quid pro quo'--co-sponsor for me and i'll cosponsor for you--at least it helps get the bill out of committee. In a little defense of the aides and senators, while googling the above, I found there are a bajillion action groups urging their folks to contact congress to get their bill thru. I am convinced that the number of contacts has to be great just to get someone's serious attention.

Posted by: Sam I Am at September 23, 2006 4:26 AM

ShelleyA - agree - Texas will not change. There is too much at stake for these guys. Hutchinson is not going to co-sponsor (and this is from her aide) - neither is Cornyn. I doubt either one will vote for it. I really like the idea of them wondering/squirming about a boycott - but again, it is a phone call that might be better spent elsewhere.

I'm one of those people that is always collecting quotes, and here are a few that really pertain to all we are fighting for with S-1915. Thought I'd post a few here in case anyone would like to use one in their correspondence:

"The greatness of a nation and it's moral progress can be judged by the way it's animals are treated. ...I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man." - Mahatma Gandhi - Hindu spiritual leader (1869-1948)

"A civilized society must count animals as worthy of moral consideration and ethical treatment. The question is not, Can they reason? nor Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?"- Jeremy Bentham, 1748-1832 (An 18th Century supporter)

"Animals do feel like us, also joy, love, fear and pain but they cannot grasp the spoken word. It is our obligation to take their part and continue to resist the people who profit by them, who slaughter them and who torture them." - Denis de Rougement - Author

"All the arguments to prove man's superiority cannot shatter this hard fact: in suffering the animals are our equals." - Pete Singer (Australian Philosopher)

"We call them dumb animals, and so they are, for they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because they have no words." - Anna Sewell, Black Beauty, 1877

"The worst sin towards our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them. That's the essence of inhumanity." - George Bernard Shaw

And for those of us who might be getting a bit discouraged:

"Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little." - Edmond Burke

WHAT? Per this article about the little colt and the other horses saved by the Grace Foundation, the slaughter house they were saved from, is in Fallon, NV. I thought there were only three, 2 in Texas and one in Illinois. WHAT GIVES?

http://www.news10.net/storyfull2.aspx?storyid=20079

An El Dorado Hills horse sanctuary and the local community joined forces to rescue 17 horses from a Nevada slaughterhouse.

Last week the first of the horses began arriving at Grace Foundation, an El Dorado Hills horse rescue program. Through donations, raffle sales and recycling efforts, people, many of them kids, managed to raise the $7,500 necessary to save the horses from a Fallon, Nevada slaughterhouse -- all in one week.

The full story from News10's Jonathan Mumm is linked above. [end of story] [If this fails to post due to URL, I will try posting without it.]

I know it's not your job, Alex, with everything else you're going here, but someone at Tim's establishment needs to update the "horses" page. Some of the horses listed as in training are now racing (and winning) and I'd sure like to see it up to date. Bet their owners would too!

Can you give him just a little nudge?

Has this article been posted from Dallas Morning News from Friday morning? More info about the status of S1915, and Senator Cornyn. More reason to keep calling each and every senator who can make a difference.

Barbaro, keep healing and rest well tonight. You are in our thoughts, and so are your fellow brothers and sisters.

Cheryl Jones - Your poem is beautiful. The last words say so much. I wish the owners who sell and betray their innocent, trusting horses could have a copy. I often wonder, who are these people? Why are they so cruel and hardened that money means everything and life and suffering means nothing? How can it be?

Dawn - I enjoyed your quotes. I think the first two may be particularly useful for our purpose. They might persuade someone - hopefully.

The thought of the pitiful "400" is shocking - horror, horror, horror.

Sleep peacefully amidst your thick hay bed - and know that your effect is felt far away ............ and that much good is being done in your name. I too will "try" to sleep peacefully now .... it is difficult when the feelings of frustration and helplessness try to invade my desire to make a difference. I had to climb out of bed ..... to post information on one of the horse boards I frequent. HOW to relax when there is so much to do ??

Perhaps I can borrow your dreams about green topped carrots ??

Good morning, Jo! I have the following horses that Michael Matz has running today:
