Barbaro Updates: 84

updates are now here.

Update 716: I spoke too soon. Peter just called (8:20 pm) and he had heard from Michael who had visited Barbaro earlier this afternoon. All was well.

Update 715: No later update today for Barbaro, which is not unusual. The Thoroughbred Times has a story on the status of the anti-horse slaughter bill in the senate: Vote on horse slaughter bill may be delayed until next year. Keep up your great work, each person's effort makes an impact.

Update 714: I have created an archive page of Barbaro updates, which includes all the updates. I did this for two reasons:

a. it is hard to find the old updates, now you can

b. if this site goes offline temporarily (if we have technical issues), you can use the archive site, which I will continue to update

Update 713: I just interviewed Edgar Prado, the interview appears below. I had called up his agent last week to confirm Edgar was coming down to visit Barbaro. I had mentioned to his agent during the call that I would really like to interview Edgar. He asked me to call back in a few days. So I chose today, when I knew there was no racing at Belmont.

When I called back (after I got off my last horse this morning) I was not expecting to be past on directly to Edgar to begin the interview. So I was in my truck, interviewing Edgar over my cell phone, looking for scraps of paper to make notes. Once the interview was complete, I told Edgar I would call back in 45 minutes, so he could hear the interview before I published it. When I called his agent back, Edgar had left, but his agent gave me Edgar's cell number to call. I did, and after I read back the interview Edgar asked me when I was next coming to Belmont. So likely I will go up for the Jockey Club, and meet with him in person. Very cool. and of course, here is the interview:

Me: What were your first impressions of Barbaro?
Edgar: I first rode him in the Tropical Park Derby. I was very impressed with the way he handled himself on the track, and when he came back after the race he was not even blowing, he could not even blow out a match. I had not ridden a horse with such a turn of foot since Kitten's Joy, a really nice turf horse.

Me: At what point did you realize you were going to win the Kentucky Derby?
Edgar: Before the race: I was very comfortable after he won his races on the dirt, and I could tell he still had room to improve. I was very confident he was training so well coming up to the Derby, he was handling the racetrack so well, and his pre-Derby breeze (under Peter Brette) was exceptional.

Edgar: During the race: Between the 3/8ths pole and 5/16ths. He was going so easily, I had not asked him, and he was going so well. I really did not need to urge him too much, I did not use the stick, a nice hand ride.

Me: How does Barbaro compare to others you have ridden?
He could run on any track and any kind of surface. I could put him anywhere I wanted (in a race). He had acceleration that was incredible. He was only a three year old and was just developing. He had the right to be one of the best horses to ever run a race.

Me: Why do you continue to visit Barbaro?
I like him very much. He gave me the biggest thrill of my life in the Derby. The courage he is currently displaying in his recovery just shows how special this horse is. A horse like this does not come around too often, I am honored to have been part of his story, he is very special.

Update 712: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (sunday night). I saw Michael Matz while I was on my second set, jogging Chappy two miles on the dirt. Michael had heard from Dr. Richardson. Michael was on Messaging standing by the clockers stand when i passed him, he was talking to Barclay Tagg. I asked Barclay if they had finalized plans for Showing Up's next race, not yet was the answer. I wonder if he saw George Washington's win! I also saw Graham Motion, and congratulated him on Better Talk Now's victory. It seems he will now not go for the Melbourne Cup. Its possible he may run again in Canada, but is now returning to Fair Hill. Graham thought the pace did not really suite Better Talk Now, and he really did run a great race.

Another poignant poem: Four Hundred Horses.

ACN!!!! Well, I sure don't like Monday at work, but knowing our Bobby is safe and sound and healing makes the day go better!!!!

Thanks Alex. I had a hard time starting my day without seeing ACN! Reading the articles and knowing that there is still "doubt" that he will survive kind of brought me back to reality that ACN's are such a blessing. I always knew that he wasn't out of the woods yet but I was hoping that the doubt had diminished a little bit. Maybe I was getting a little too upbeat about his condition. Kinda like putting the cart ahead of the horse (no pun intended).

Good morning, Barbaroooo, ACN- YAY!

g'morning, Alex, thank you- g'morning, y'all!

I mentioned this last night, but will again this morning- my local NBC affiliate is interested in a 'local' angle on the issue of S1915 and it's effect. I have a list of Texas based rescues to start calling, but if you know of a rescue (or lack of) case in the South Texas (like south of San Antonio) area- please click on my name and email me about it?
thanks!

Good Morning Sweet Barbaro! ACN :) Have a good day, it is beautiful outside!

Everyone have a great day!

Posted by: Rosemarie at September 25, 2006 12:30 PM

ACN - I was beginning to worry. Just shows we are spoiled by Alex being on the spot so early every day. Thank you Alex , it's important today of all days to know our boy is okay.

God bless the 400 and God be with all of you here who woke up today with broken or hurting hearts. Mine is also. So much work and we couldn't stop this.

But as Jazz says above , Bobby is safe and sound and healing , and that should make our day go better. Truer words were never spoken.

Let's lean on Barbaro's strong shoulders today, they are there for us , as we are here for him, symbolically, yes , but true nevertheless. He is a light God sent us, so we will persevere in this fight to save horses just as Bobby perseveres.

I hope this doesn't sound too cheerleader because I mean this on a deeper level since I am thinking
of the 400. God bless , and help , all here.

ACN, which is music to my ears.

Good Morning all, sweet Barbaro, Alex and all Fans of Barbaro.

It was a tough weekend visiting dad in the hospital, but this always cheers me up. You keep fighting Bobby, and I'll keep praying.

Prayers to all who need them.

All I can say at this point is, "Grow, hoof...grow!"

Thanks to all of you who posted comments and ratings for the article on associatedcontent.com ("Barbaro and the 9-11 Connection"). It is still showing as the #1 emailed article. Continuing to email it and post comments keeps the plight of Barbaro and the legislation before the public.

The article was actually submitted on 8/31, though not published until 9/11.

I would encourage others to write for associated.com. It's a great way to get publicity for equine and other animal issues. You do not have to be a professional writer to do this...well-written pieces of 600 words are more are typically welcome, whether filled with facts or submitted as opinion pieces.

Good Morning, Fans of Barbaro!

Anna in TX, dreamed of a horse bucking.

am praying for the 400. There is a reason for all this. No matter what happens, they will never be forgotten. I swear it.

Barbaro, ACN. That is wonderful news. Did you know there is a lovely article in yesterday's Phila. paper about you? Two articles, actually. There is a picture of your lovely Mom outside of NBC. She just glows in that picture. She is part of a group of people who are using their wealth and influence to help others - look at Bill & Melinda Gates, Bono, Sir Richard Branson. They are awakening to the responsibilities they need to shoulder and are giving back. What wonderful times we live in to see this enlightenment. Maybe we need to approach the Jacksons to form some sort of foundation that we could join and work thru for horses. ITs a nutty thought. Those of us who are writers/poets, could form some sort of publishing co. Another crazy idea that came to me at 3 a.m. today. Shine on you crazy diamond. Keep inspiring us.

Foggy, miss you still, but feel your shining spirit, my Long Time Sun.

Mary S. I love all your prayers. You shine so brightly.

Take care, everybody.

Healing and Peace,
Lyn Gilbert

So glad to hear Mike Rea had a great overnighter at home this weekend. Soon you will be home for good. Keep smiling Mike. When you smile it is contagious!!!!!

Thank you Alex for the update. Enjoy the beautiful weather at Fair Hill.

Flyers to distribute and letters to write - all in the name of Barbaro.

Here's a story that ran last Wednesday in the Palm Beach Post. It mentions that the Senate could take the issue up in November?
SECTION: NEIGHBORHOOD POST; Pg. 8

HEADLINE: BILL'S PASSAGE FIRST STEP TOWARD SLAUGHTER BAN

BYLINE: Amy Bower Doucette

BODY:

Horse lovers across the country have won an important battle in the fight to stop the slaughtering of horses for human consumption.

The Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503), a bill introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., passed the House on Sept. 7 by a vote of 263 to 146. It must pass the Senate, which is expected to act on the bill in November, and be signed into law by the president.

But the fight is far from over. The agriculture industry, specifically the National Cattleman's Beef Association, is lobbying against the bill. One association member, Paxton Ramsey, a rancher from Texas, recently posted an editorial on the organization's Web site. In it, he criticized the bill as being "driven by emotion, not facts."

"It does not surprise me that some folks are repulsed by the idea of processing horses for food," Ramsey said. "My goal is not to persuade anyone that horse processing is desirable, but it certainly should not be outlawed as an option for managing horses. That's precisely the goal of H.R. 503, and it is a serious threat to animal agriculture as we know it."

Horse slaughter for human consumption is a business that most Americans are unaware of, yet it brings in millions of dollars in profit to the buyers, auction houses and slaughterhouses each year.

Americans do not eat horse meat, so there is no market for it in the United States. The slaughterhouses are foreign-owned and the meat is sold to consumers in France, Belgium and Japan.

Jennifer Swanson, co-founder of Loxahatchee-based Pure Thoughts Horse and Foal Rescue, which works with other rescue organizations up North to pull horses from "kill pens" before they are taken to slaughter, explains the reasoning behind the market for horse meat abroad.

"Europeans believe they are eating wild horse meat," she said. "But these are people's horses. They have carcinogens in them like wormers that are not intended for human consumption. They are supposed to wait 30 days before killing the animals to allow the toxins to leave their system, but they don't. The saying is: 'Four days from stable to table.' "

Horse meat is sold overseas as "Cheval Tartar," or raw horse meat.

The process of killing horses for food is identical to the one used for cattle. The animals are stunned by a captive bolt gun.

"They use a captive bolt, a retractable gun," Swanson explained. "Cows have flat heads. Horses have the long necks to fight it. Their first instinct is to move their head. They have to aim it to get them right between the eyes. They are not rendered unconscious every time and the vivisection starts when they are alive."

The Cattleman's Association argument that the end of horse slaughter will have an effect on the beef industry makes no sense to Swanson and one of her volunteers, Cheryl Hanna.

"They are afraid that if horse slaughter stops, people are going to start rallying against the slaughter of cows and pigs, too," Hanna said. "They think it's all interrelated, but it's not. One has nothing to do with the other! Most people that are against horse slaughter are not vegetarians."

Said Swanson, "We raise horses to be our pets."

########Socorro

USDA?? i sent out 3 emails to Johannes when the USDA was cutting funding. funny thing when HR503 passed i got every email back that very same day!

when horse's are humanely euthanized they CAN NOT be used for foreign dinner plates or food..because of the toxins..

i have been on the one slaughter house site, i see since 3 years ago they have changed it.. but on the first page they say they take ONLY the old and sick and infirmed.. then if you scroll through the site they talk about how the meat of a 3 year old or younger is what is preferred!!!

i have been involved with this for 16 years.. i have heard it all.. if you hear anything else please don't hesistate to ask..

all companion animals and pets should be humanely euthanized, when they are old, sick and nothing more can be done for them.. their lives should be taken gently not in a cold slaughterhouse, for nothing more than profit and greed.

it's all rehdoric and LIES being spread by the slaughter houses and those that oppose us.
just like this is an emotional issue.. or it's part of a larger agenda!! i have 2 words for that, but i cant post them.. lol

Good Morning Barbaro Nation and FOB's,

THANKS for the update ALEX! We all count on the updates to keep us connected!

######
Can anybody contact Mr. T Boone (Pickens) and see if he would put up the $$$$ to save the Kaufman horses??? Apparently his daughter gave money to the Grace foundation to help save SALVATION and the other horses from the feedlot in Nevada.

######
We don't own horses so yesterday we went out in search of some. Went up near Julian, CA and found some super nice people to let our daughter (4 yr. old) go bareback on a Tennessee walking horse. Got to feed the horse "cookies" made of molasses and oats (almost took my fingers with them)! It was a great day but now back to calling and faxing the Senators.

######
I had seen that the Committee reviewing S1915 is meeting on Tuesday. . . let's hope they move the bill forward!!

ACN for Barbaro, the wonderhorse!! Another step closer...

Posted by: Jo (UK) at September 25, 2006 12:54 PM

I have been reading the posts everyday, but have felt too deflated to post myself. I am not done with this fight by a long shot, but sometimes the realities of the horrors being committed is just too much for me to take. This morning I woke up and the first thing I thought about was that those horses are being killed right now, as I sip my morning coffee. I almost felt guilty about enjoying the cup. I am ashamed of my government right now. My two MO senators haven't even bothered to reply to my emails & faxes. It's such a shame that our great country condones this. I have found myself eating less meat too because of this. Although there is a marked difference between horses and livestock, this issue has changed my perspective in ways that I didn't anticipate (like not eating much meat these days). I think I look at beef and think about horse and then my stomach turns. The only bright spot in this dark time is the people on this website, fighting relentlessly for what's right. Ara, Socorro, Debbie L.A., ShelleyA you guys are our generals! Thank you for encouraging us and providing the facts.

As for Barbaro, I dreamed about you our most wonderful boy. I know that you have a long road ahead, but you are doing everything right. Keep up the good fight. We're with you.

Thanks Alex for sharing the information with us.

Came across the following article....not sure if it was already posted, if so, please pass by. Sorry for the length of the story.

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/0924montini0924.html

Finding humanity among local folks with horse sense

Back in May, we all felt pretty good about ourselves for the way we encouraged the owners of Barbaro to do everything in their power to save the thoroughbred's life.

But, really, what choice did they have?

Millions of people were watching on TV when Barbaro, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, broke his leg during the Preakness. advertisement

By the time the horse arrived at an animal hospital in Pennsylvania, there were homemade signs attached to the facility's fence reading "We Love You, Barbaro," "Believe in Miracles," "Beat the Odds" and so on. Schoolchildren filled the stall next to Barbaro with get-well cards and flowers.

Nothing like that happened last October, when a thoroughbred gelding named Polish Times broke his leg at Santa Anita racetrack in California.

"It doesn't go well for a lot of these beautiful animals, once they get hurt," said Holly Marino of Horse Rescue of North Scottsdale. "A lot of them wind up at the slaughter auction."

Polish Times' trainer didn't want that to happen to a horse that had won nearly $500,000 over a long career. So, he loaded his 8-year-old horse into a trailer and drove him across the desert to Arizona.

"We win most of the battles to save these horses," Marino said. "We give them the time they need to heal. Then we try to find homes for them. This horse was so patient. He had a huge metal brace on his leg and the doctor came out every two weeks to ultrasound him and then have a farrier change the angle of his shoes to make sure he healed correctly."

It's an expensive proposition, but one that Marino has done for thousands of horses over the years.

"We're so selfish as humans," she said. "It's all about 'me.' Working with horses has taught my family so much about giving and not taking. It has been one of the greatest things for us. A blessing."

After months on the mend at Marino's place, Polish Times was able to move around more freely and has been sent to recuperate further at Rancho Tierra Madre in Cave Creek.

Owner Jim Gath told me, "There are 40,000 thoroughbreds born every year and only one of them eventually wins the Kentucky Derby. Only 3,000 or 4,000 make money. What happens to the rest? You never hear about them. When one gets hurt on national TV everybody cares. But for the rest of them, some of them anyway, there are people like Holly."

Marino has worked with all breeds of horses, as well as donkeys, mules and more. Most of the money comes out of her family's pocket, but she also has received grants and her non-profit organization accepts donations at (602) 689-8825 or www.rescueahorse.com.

"All the reward that I need is to see a horse that came to us broken down being able to run again," she said. "This horse (Polish Times) is like that."

Not long ago, Polish Times was adopted by a woman who owns a large ranch near Yellowstone National Park. He'll move there next summer. Without a jockey on his back or the rails of a track to restrain him, he'll be able to gallop at a speed of his choosing and not always have to turn left.

"When you put Polish Times next to another horse there are no pretensions," Gath said. "There's just acceptance. They live in the moment. They're honest. They're smart. They don't judge."

Maybe that's why human beings who share those characteristics, like Gath and Marino, are said to have horse sense.

I really don't understand why the cattlemen think outlawing horse slaughter will have any impact on the beef industry. That has got to be a smoke screen for something else. Thats like comparing apples and oranges.

Barbaro, I'm glad you had a good night. Keep healing big boy!

##### Lynette - thank you for that post, it was heartening .

##### Steve , continue holding him close in your heart , you are making memories that will be worth everything to you in the future. Love to Big Dude.

##### Louise in Ohio , You and your Dad will be in my prayers . Best wishes .

##### Shiela , I know how you feel . It gets to me also, and it just hurts the heart and spirit. but our spirit is renewable, thank goodness, and we will continue this fight and I know you will too.
One thought , if I may ask you this , try not to associate cattle and beef with this at this time if you can.

That's what the cattle people are afraid of and use to turn others against us. Its just a thought and I am with you on this and in no way am criticising you. Please don't feel that I am telling you what to feel or say- we are all in this together. We are family, if only cyber !!
It's just a thought. Thanks for listening to my opinion . I can tell how much you care and how despondent you are this morning , as am I . But remember we haven't lost in the long run.

It's a bad day for the 400 but maybe their souls will later help us win this battle. It's all unthinkable , but let's remember Barbaro.

There he stands , like a beacon light in the darkness of all this , getting better and stronger.

He's getting testy and biting more. I hope that means he is feeling better. Doesn't like being cooped up !! When he was so injured he didn't think much about it , so that alone shows he's better. I am too wordy this morning so I will quit. Don't let it get us down , call the
gutless wonders who are not , (yet) sponsors ! !

Your updates get my day going. Thanks as always for letting us know about our beloved Barbaro and to also hear about your morning rides. Always interesting. And the other news is great to read as well.

KERRI -

Unfortunately, I didn't get involved until recently and didn't realize about USDA until we started discussing the issues.

There is someone directly Under the Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics, that I worked for, but if the need comes up he is an amazing person.

Just got a telephone call from Laural Folley at the Meadows Race Track,Washington, Pa.
Her boss is the President of the Meadows, and they asked me to sent them copies of our flyers, and they would post them at the track. She asked for 50 of them. Hopefully this will put the word out.

ps. I called her last week for some help.

QUESTION
I am being asked this time when I call Senate offices if I am calling for an organization or just me personally. Was not asked that in the past. Is it better to say it's just me or better to say part of Fans of Barbaro?

Here are 2 that I have called and comments. More later.
Jon Kyle (R-AZ) animal welfare aide is Lucy Murfitt but person who answered wouldn't put me thru--don't know why--said he'd take the message
Joseph Biden (D-DE)--animal welfare aide? don't know--said he'd take the message and said he really didn't know much about S1915 other than it was an anti-slaughter bill--he was very cordial, took my info and said he could get the info to the right person

Lord God, wrap S1915 in Divine Love and Divine Order. Open the heart of every member of the Senate to clearly hear the voice of the horse, and feel the Magnificent Spirit of the horse. May each member be immediately compelled to move S1915 to the floor in a right and perfect way, and then vote with their hearts and their conscience for the highest good of all.

I just called E. Dole and Mr. Burr's ( both not co-sponsors of the bill) office number for their support of S1915. Told them I come from their side of the state that is primarily horse people. Both secreataries said they would immediately post our intentions about the bill. I will also email them for extra security and emphasis that they DO indeed get our message. nything else I can do for you guys and gals ...jut ask!

Kerrie,

You are right on regarding USDA - Secretary of Agriculture - I am convinced he is EVIL as he single handedly thwarted Congress and the people last year after the bills passed.

Someone commented about microchipping horses to help cut down on theft. We have microchips in our horses due to hurricanes in Florida but it doesn't help if they are stolen. Testimony from workers - they cut out the chips before slaughter because it taints the meat - EVERYONE knows these horses are stolen and are pets but all they care about is the money. Slaughter is promoting more crime and it needs to stop. SICKENING! I have been asking my senators - WHO IS PROTECTING THE AMERICAN TAXPAYERS WHO OWN HORSES? All the money we have to spend to protect our property and horses from slaughter houses that PAY NO TAXES!

God bless Barbaro and our 452 friends on Black Monday.

D'Anne #####

I called and emailed Sens Dole and Burr this morning also. Tried to use different talking points , but I've called about a hundred times ! Glad you're calling too today , maybe it will all add up and impress them.

I've also been writing hand written letters for snail mail to some Chambers of Commerce in Texas.
Telling them I am joining the national boycott of
all things Texas, even internet orders , until they stop the killing. I think these chamber boys, who are so ra- ra will be a little shocked that this has started.
Everyone please write these notes or letters.thanks

Better to say you are calling as an individual than an organization. They want to hear from their constituents and it means more than an organization.

Lynn Gilbert...you never have a nutty thought. I too have hoped that one day, when Bobby has completely healed, that the Jacksons will be able to redirect thier energies to perhaps form a Foundation. For now, they must focus on him.

Mary S... Thank you for begining our days with your words of devotion. They help me focus. And they make me feel more connected with all of you as we prepare for our individual tasks at hand.
Tough, emotional stuff going on. We need to stick together.

SHEILA - Welcome

I was just like you for awhile and used to enjoy reading everyone's comments, names of Barbaro, tributes, etc. and my husband's first questions, how many new names, tributes, poems, etc.

I became a vegetarian (not VEGAN) because of our travels, and personally never liked eating meat.

When we were in Nepal (they don't eat beef, considered sacred), in a small town, we stayed in a local hotel that had a cow. The cow would leave in the morning and come back at the same time everyday. It was hilarious to see the cow standing in front of the gate waiting for the keeper to let her in. The cows in no way are used as a food source.

It was funny because we went during monsoon season and the cows would be on the sidewalks sitting under porches, while we had to walk in the rain on the road with potholes full of water and mud. You know how people would gather in the center of town and sit around, that's what the cows do.

Wow Alex! The interview with Edgar is wonderful.
My favorite line is:
"He had the right to be one of the best horses to ever run a race"

That's coming from one of the best jockeys in the world. Remember Peter comparing Barbaro's acceleration to a Porsche? Sounds like Edgar sort of comfirmed that.

He stopped to pose for pictures and sign autographs with all the people that asked - including my 4 year old, who had a blast (although I think I was more excited about getting Edgar Prados aotograph =)!!). ACN...Another Comfortable Night...Makes my day! Barbaro is, indeed one of the blessed ones. He is cared for and loved by so many capable hands and hearts.

The number, 40,000 TBs born each year is alarming. Where DO the 30,000-plus who do NOT make $ in racing or competition end up? These are animals with a possible 30+ lifespan.

Can it be that "industry" breeders are just as indifferent to the eventual fate of individual animals as puppy-mill-people are? 40,000 per year sounds like "pony-mill" to me.

Can't the Jocky Club address the overbreeding issue? They CAN, but WILL they?

Hello fellow Fans of Barbaro

I just sent a breaking news story to Action News. Please do the same...let's get the media out to Kaufman Texas
I put Mayor Paula Bacon down as the contact and her phone number 972-932-2856
I told them what is happening
I attached the Facts sheet along with it.

http://www.abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=stationinfo&id=3299803

I think they may be our only chance right now being the email goes right to the newsroom.

See you all later, back to calling Sen. Frist and faxing.

Precious Barbaro...I love you and will check up in a few hours.

D'Anne and Bobbie B,

As I do almost daily, I too called the offices of Sen Dole and Sen Burr. Nothing new to report. By the way Sen Burr's aide on this issue is Dan Woodley, and though I have yet to reach him directly I am sure he is tired of hearing from me on his voice mail.

A lawyer or other associate of HSUS or any pro-horse group...Tell them you'll only talk to them by calling the organization and asking to speak to them, to verify. But, you will not discuss this issue on a private line.

A person, who you don't know, that claims to be working for this cause...Be cordial, reveal nothing, and direct them to this Discussion Board.

Reveal NOTHING and believe NOTHING!!!!!!!!

People wishing to KILL THIS LEGISLATION have called some of our members and posed as all of the above, hoping to gain inside information, plant false information, and guide us to the worst possible course of action.

Remember, these operatives are paid to be charming and friendly and give you the feeling that you're getting the 'real story' and 'priviledged information'. They will try to make you feel like you're SO important and influential that they chose only you to contact. This is their job and they're quite good at it.

Just spoke to my connection in Senator Specter's office. Senator Specter has been a co-sponsor and great supporter of this bill from the beginning.
The advice I got was as follows....I sencerely hope this information is helpful.

Call and write to your OWN senators. They are only interested in their own constituents. Best to spend your time calling all of your friends in your state and having them call also.

Keep it simple. Let them know that you are asking for their support for the anti slaughter bill and please consider being a co-sponsor for S1915. We don't need to get into the technicalties of which bill (HR503 or S1915)
is brought to the floor. It is possible that either one could come up but that won't make a difference if you make your wishes known.

It is the VOLUME of calls from that state that will make the difference.

If e-mailing, NO ATTACHMENTS. They are not permitted to open attachments.

If faxing, keep it short and to the point.

Although the term mark up really refers to discussion at the committee level, there is no reason to include this wording. During mark up they CAN add amendments but it's not what the term means.

He also suggests calls to Senator Frist. He gave us the number for the majority leader's office and suggests we call this number instead of his senate office. It is 202-224-3135

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, if the bill does not come up this week, it does NOT mean anything. It just means they are under time constraints and it will be considered when they return after recess

Lastly, I have to tell you that I completely trust his advice. I met him in DC and have been in constant contact. He knows what we're doing and is very willing to help us. He has always responded to my questions quickly and has been a wonderful ally as is Senator Specter.

I wish us all GOOD LUCK......I KNOW we can get it done!!!

Laura NC #### and D'Anne,

I have called Sen. Burr for 2 months and finally talked to Dan Woodley in person the other day. He was very nice , took notes, told me the things he hadn't heard when I told him about the issues from our side. At least he listened and seemed thoughtful. He is very powerful in what will be told to the Sen. He didn't say that of course but my daughter used to work for Rep.Spence of SC so she has told me a lot of how it really goes in these Washington offices.

Keep calling , and every time, leave your name and number , or email , and ask for a call back.Good luck and thanks.

You might want to copy your note and paste it into a Word doc, and then repost it here several times per day.

I just wanted to thank you for getting the interview with Edgar Prado. He is a great man and to hear him talk about Barbaro just brings a smile across my face from ear to ear.

I am soooo glad to hear an update on Big Dude aka Mr. Boob, I was feared to ask because I know how deeply sad it made me when people inquired about my Sweetness, and my Boo. You just have them for so long, it seems like a lifetime, but it is never long enough--for I am a greedy cat mom, I always want them to stay forever. I know its impossible, but I have always been an unrealistic dreamer, of the impossible, myself. Take care of the special boy, he sounds wonderful, I wish I could see his picture. I bet he is adorable. I will pray for you guys.

Alex, that interview with Edgar was great! Meant to comment on George Washington the other day. It's a shame that all that controvery overshadowed what was a wonderful race for him, from what I've read.

Hey Barbaro sweetie!

ACN!! awwww aren't you the bestest boy? Keep on keeping on, you're going to make it!

Now let's hear a whuffle or a snort while I sing you your morning song. Ready?

Foot (or is that ear) soldier reporting in:

I've made many calls. Been put on hold a lot and had to leave voice mail. Seems every aide is in a meeting or about to go to a meeting. The person I spoke to at Senator Kennedy's office was accommodating. Said send an email because they can pass the information around to each other and they have a large staff. Hadn't thought about that. Some pushback from some offices--call your own senator kind of stuff. Finding each office has a flavor of its own. Some nice, some indifferent (like I have really interrupted their day).

Another question:
I have read somewhere here or on the message board that this may come to a vote in November. Other than the fact that the slaughter will continue for more months (and I'm not saying that isn't huge), it could still be signed into law without going back thru the House, couldn't it? Why is it being said that if it doesn't get done this week, it won't get done this year? Just curious. Thanks.

Barbaro--we're in this with you for the long haul. So, any lurkers--know this--WE WILL NOT GIVE UP. This is about ethics, values, and decency. Barbaro's owners and connections know what that is. Many others do, too. We are a COMMUNITY. We support each other, as well as Barbaro. We are resolved to win, just as he is resolved to win. So I guess you can say we have a bit of Thoroughbred in us all.

Stay strong Barbaro! Stay strong my friends!

We received this automated letter from Sen. Mike Crapo -

In our letter nowhere did we mention "HUMANE" or anything having to do with emotional feelings.

SHELLEY, my Latin blood just went up (like the Mafia), any suggestions, please e-mail me ssgafriends@yahoo.com

I am walking away to calm down before I answer him back. My intentions are to tell him to read my letter before sending his #%^$%@ (not really) automated letter. I guess it doesn't take Einstein to figure out that those absolutely opposing will have these kinds of automated responses.

$@@%&*&!#@#$&^%%##@$$%$%$!@#$%$%^

----------------------------------------------------

We share your interest in ensuring the humane treatment of horses. However, we must also balance the needs and rights of livestock owners. I understand the goals of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, introduced by Senator John Ensign (R-Nevada) in the U.S. Senate, and introduced by Representative John Sweeney (R-New York) as H.R. 503 in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, I have concerns with this legislation, as it does not achieve this necessary balance.

As you may know, S. 1915 and H.R. 503 would prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption and prohibit the trade and transport of horses intended for human consumption. S. 1915 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, whiles H.R. 503 was passed by the House of Representatives by a vote of 263-146, 1 Present on September 7, 2006.

Currently, the Humane Slaughter Act (HSA) and other federal regulations enforced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture provide extensive regulation of the transport and slaughter of horses. Additionally, there are serious concerns and questions regarding the effect a ban on horse slaughter could have on the welfare of horses. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) reports that existing horse rescue and retirement facilities have a maximum capacity of 6,000 horses. If slaughter was no longer an available option for horses, some horses would likely be directed to these unregulated facilities, which could cause additional strain on the facilities and result in less than adequate care.

Please rest assured that I will continue to work to ensure the maintenance of practical and humane treatment for animals. I will continue to follow any developments with this legislation and ensure that Idaho's best interests on livestock issues are represented at the national level. Your thoughts and concerns are important, and I will keep them in mind as I address this important issue.

Posted by: Socorro at September 25, 2006 4:53 PM

My husband made me feel better, I can call him by his name and he can't say I am insulting him, SENATOR CRAPO!

Posted by: Socorro at September 25, 2006 4:54 PM

Socorro and everyone

Here is a piece of something I wrote. It addresses the "concern" that there would be too many un-adoptable horses with "welfare" problems if not for slaughter. Feel free to use it if it makes sense to you.

*********

What would happen to the 90,000 horses that are slaughtered each year, if the American slaughterhouses did not exist?

First of all, those numbers would drop, because tens of thousands of horses would no longer be stolen and sold into slaughter. Those horses would remain with their rightful owners, and drop out of the statistics. (In California, horse theft dropped dramatically after horse slaughter was banned.)

The five to ten thousand horses that are imported for slaughter from Canada and Mexico would no longer be sent across the borders into the United States. These horses would also drop out of the statistics.

Of the remaining number, the healthy horses would be purchased at auction by individuals or by horse rescue services, rather than by slaughterhouse agents. (The horse rescuers who are in the best position to provide information on how many horses they can place are banned by law from lobbying on this issue, so their input is unavailable to Congress unless the legislators themselves seek it out.)

Those horses that are legitimately at the end of their lives -- again, estimated to be only 8% of the original figure of 90,000 horses slaughtered per year -- would be humanely euthanized. (Each year, 900,000 American horses already meet a natural or accidental death, or are humanely euthanized; so the additional numbers of euthanized horses would not create the disposal problem that is frequently cited as a concern by slaughter proponents.)

I'm late saying "good morning," so hope it was for all (or is for those out West).

I know it was a wretched day for 400 horses in Kaufman, Texas. Yesterday as I watched horse show competition at the Big E (Eastern States Expo in Mass) all I could think of was the fate of horses and the 400.

I wanted to email Cornyn and say, how can you sleep at night? But it's a waste.

Alex, thank you for the wonderful interview with Edgar! Funny image of you in your truck trying to find bits of paper ;)

I wasn't heartened at being reminded so starkly about Bobby's struggle still being a struggle. Don't need any downers right now. I hate reality sometimes.

Posted by: Jane in CT at September 25, 2006 5:03 PM

Oh. Right!

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at September 25, 2006 5:04 PM

This is what we used in our letters (bits and pieces from everyone's suggestions)

-----------------------------------

Opponents to S.1915 contend that there are insufficient resources to care for the thousands of unwanted horses, citing a lack of equine shelters. The number of horses slaughtered in this country is less than 1% of their total number. The number of neglected, abused or abandoned horses is even far less. In fact, the majority of horses that wind up at slaughterhouses are young and fit, stolen, or purchased under false pretenses from unsuspecting owners. The organizations leading the ban against slaughter are actively working together to provide more sanctuaries and solutions for horses. The average cost for veterinarian-administered euthanasia and carcass disposal, approximately $225, is a fee that can be added to the purchase price and set aside for future proper euthanasia and disposal. We strongly believe and support that owners should bear the responsibility, not the government.

Thank you Marilyn for writing your concise response to the question - what will happen to all the horses that would have gone to slaughter?

I am starting an email campaign here in Canada on behalf of the Canadian Horse Defense Coalition ( www.defendhorsescanada.org ) to bring awareness and help bring an end to the horse slaughter industry here. This will be a useful response I'll remember to use.

Keep up the great work, everyone in the US, with your US campaign. We will use your example as we address it here in Canada.

Barbaro had Another Comfortable Night - for which I will never cease to be grateful. Nonetheless, I am beginning to wonder whether Barbaro has set a record for number of days being categorized by his doctor as "stable but serious"! I guess until the left rear hoof has grown to the point that Dr. R says he can go be a horse in a field, that will be the label. (Why not, "stable but serious, and improving"? As long as that hoof is growing - and it is - he is "improving" - right?)

GELATIN GELATIN GELATIN - makes human fingernails and equine hooves grow.

Keep up the good fight, calling Senators re S 1915 - to get it OUT OF COMMITTEE and on for a vote. Please remind the aide you talk to, that they are not hearing from rescue facilities because NFP 501(c)(3)'s are forbidden by federal law, from lobbying.

When addressing the responses such as "Crapo" it might be good to fax the Myth and Fact sheet from the HSUS. It is accurate and addresses all the issues that those canned responses bring up.

You can't e-mail links but you can print this and fax it.

Does Canada allow slaughter, or are Canadian horses just exported to Illinois?

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at September 25, 2006 5:20 PM

Marilyn and Everyone,

Canada slaughters 45,000+ per yer at 3 major facilties - 2 in Quebec and 1 in Alberta.

Marilyn - I went to http://www.ahdf.org/slaughter.html

This site listed 4 slaughterhouses in Canada:

BOUVRY EXPORT CALGARY, Ltd
Fort McLeod, Alberta

YAMATRA IMPORT-EXPORT, Inc
Yamachiche, Quebec

RICHELIEU MEAT, Inc
Massueville, Quebec

BARTON FEEDERS CO Ltd
Owen Sound, Ontario

Of course, I don't know how recent this information is.

Just a thought: Are there ANY slaughterhouses in Europe or Japan, does anyone know?

#### Does anyone know (ALex) if the ceremony for Foggy is going to be televised on HRTV SAt?Since they cover Golden Gate, i assume they would be the ones to show it. Marcy at the florist, didnt know. Jen

I still think that a big talking point is that none of the slaughterhouses in the US pay taxes...How does a business located in the US get away with that, if that is true?

Here's a copy of a letter that Linnie composed that is very good for Senator Frist. You guys might find this helpful

Dear Sen. Frist:

As the current Republican Majority Leader of our esteemed Senate, I know that you are aware that HR 503, the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, was recently voted on and passed, without amendments by an overwhelming margin of 263-146. The Senate companion bill, S1915 is currently seated in the Commerce Committee where it has been languishing since October of 2005; this bill must be moved out of committee as quickly as possible and without amendments, for vote and passage on the Senate floor.

As the Senate Majority Leader, I respect and admire the influence that you hold to ‘get things done’, and so I am beseeching your intervention and your political ‘clout’ to get the Horse Protection Act, S1915, successfully voted on and passed as soon as possible.

Time is of the essence, Sen. Frist. We must stop the continued barbaric, inhumane and very painful slaughter of our American equines because it continues on at this very moment. I humbly ask you, as a concerned American for all animal rights, that you take these powerful steps now to insure the successful movement and clearance for an expedient vote and passage of S1915 as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your time and your consideration, and most importantly, for your support. I am proud to call myself a member of "Fans of Barbaro".

Most Sincerely,

I had seen that the Committee reviewing S1915 is meeting on Tuesday. . . let's hope they move the bill forward!!

Is this true?

Had my neice from TN email Senator Frist, and told her to call too.
3 neices in MS have called and emailed.

All this is fine and good, but I still feel sick.
Knowing what's happening as I write.
Why are there so meny deff ears out there.

The video of Salvation, I could not open it.

I got a email today, from a Bank in Texas saying my account in Texas had been closed.
Funny I don't have an account in Tx.

Praying For all who are hurting here.
For Barbaro too.

I pray every day for you, Barbaro. It makes me so happy to hear of your progress. I also pray for all the horses in danger of slaughter. I love you.

It is true that there have been years that they have paid only $5.00 in taxes. If you go to www.marynash.org upper left hand corner there is a listing for new info on Dallas Crown taxes for 2000-2004. There is also a memo from a attorneys office that I believe SAPL requested.

Thanks Anita for researching that for Canada. Unfortunately, there are more smaller facilities that "process" horses than what is readily listed online. Canada's annual horse slaughter industry is a $60 million business.

ATTENTION EVERYONE BULLETIN
FROM THE MAYOR OF KAUFMAN

I do not want to defocus us today as our mission is critical, but I have just finished a conversation with the mayor, and she is waiting for me to call her back with the list that was made up for calling senators today. She wants to go over with me to see if we have the same list.

ALSO, the mayor has said that there are three lawsuits pending, and that the opposition is trying to paint her in an untruthful light. They are getting ready to subpoena her computers, and she wanted me NOT send the list by computer for that reason. I report that so you can see just what nasty business this is...so that it will encourage you to fight alll the harder.

ALSO, THIS IS A FEDERAL ISSUE...our US Senators represnt us on the FEDERAL level, and the mayor thinks, and has requested, that we CALL ALL SENATORS, as we had planned in the first place.
The mayor said that IF this bill could GET TO the senate that it would be passed, but GETTING IT THERE is what we are supposed to about today. That is THE KEY to getting this mission accomplished.

Please know that I DO NOT want to muddy the water.
Directly after hanging up with the mayor I called Shelley A. to confer, and she wasn't there. So, I have made a prayerful decision to go ahead and post what the mayor said. It is a change from what Shelley A. posted earlier as per her conversation with Senantor Specter's office.

The mayor of Kaufman has been in hand to hand combat with these people for a long, long time, and I, personally, think there is nothing like experience. So, I am taking her at her word, and I believe she knows what she is talking about.

If there is ANY news to the contrary will post it immediately.

THE MAYOR OF KAUFMAN, TEXAS WANTS US TO CALL ALL SENATORS THAT ARE NOT ONBOARD, TO ASK THEM TO CO-SPONSOR S-1915...AND THIS IS BASED ON THE FACT THAT THIS IS A FEDERAL ISSUE. WE MUST ASK THEM TO MOVE IT ON FOR A VOTE ASAP...THAT'S THE KEY.

I'll be back after I go over the list with the mayor. Just keep calling till I get back to answer question if there are any.

God Bless Us and the next 400

And Shelley, Anita

Thank you for the information on Canadian slaughter.

I must say, I am very surprised. I didn't think Canadians would tolerate it.

But then...I think of Canada as something like heaven...I'm sure the reality is somewhat different.
