Barbaro Updates: 85

updates are now here.

Update 721: Peter just called. He visited Barbaro this afternoon (1 pm), and was upbeat in his assessment. He groomed Barbaro, changed his bandages and put on his massage blanket. He also said Michael just called, who visited Barbaro on his way back from Delaware Park, later today. Barbaro remains comfortable.

Update 720: Here is the New Bolton release for today: Barbaro's progress pleases veterinarians:

Veterinarians at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital continue to be pleased with the medical progress of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, who remains in stable condition at the hospital. "The left hind hoof on Barbaro has grown about 18 millimeters in the heel area," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "It has to grow at least three times that, which could take more than six months. It's a very gradual process; the bottom of his foot has to completely heal as well."

Barbaro continues to be comfortable in his right hind leg cast, so there are no immediate plans to change it. "As always, we monitor his comfort very closely, and we will likely change the cast within the next two weeks," said Dr. Richardson. "Barbaro's vital signs continue to be excellent, as is his appetite. He definitely enjoys his daily excursions outside to walk and graze." Barbaro spends about 30 to 40 minutes outside every day, depending on the weather.

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, October 3, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 719: Just a quick FYI, New Bolton has a scheduled Barbaro update to release for today, but it may be released later this afternoon. I was chatting to them on another matter this morning and this is what I learned.

Update 718: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (monday night). I saw Michael Matz as I was going to the track on my second set on Chappy. He had heard from Dr. Richardson. While it was a bit of a chilly start to the day, it's absolutely gorgeous now as the sun is coming up. I am now heading to the woodchip track to gallop Chappy. We only have two more weeks to ride on the woodchips as we then begin the switch over to the Tapeta surface. As I am walking on to the track, I also asked Adrian Rolls if Better Talk Now was back from his Canadian exploits. He said he had arrived back in Fair Hill last night and all is well.
updated tuesday 7:20am

Update 717: We have a couple of quick reports, the first from a visit to Fair Hill this past weekend, and the second, a meeting with Mr Aleo (Lost in the Fog day at Golden Gate Fields is Saturday September 30, I believe it will be covered by HRTV).

Racing also returns to ESPN on saturday, so hopefully we will hear from Jeannine. The major race in Europe this weekend is the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe. Sue McMullen will hopefully keep us updated with this marquee race. And finally, Discreet Cat also runs on sunday: Discreet Cat vs. Bernardini unlikely to happen.

Good Tuesday Morning Alex, Bobby and fellow "fans of Barbaro"

Waiting to hear ACN as a happy way to start the day.

Everyone ready for the battle today??? The closure of the 3 horse slaughterhouses in the U.S. - Let's make it happen.

"Never give up" "Never give in".

Proud to be a "fan or Barbaro"

Good morning, Barbaro. Good morning to all Fans of Barbaro.

Hope everyone is well-rested and ready to take up the battle again.

Keep your eyes on the prize!

Waiting to hear a report on Barbaro. Got to get my morning fix. Also have come to count on Alex's very descriptive mornings at Fair Hill. A visual image seems to start the day off right.

#####

Barbars Walters mentioned on The View that she just returned from Australia where she conducted the first interview with Terry Irwin since her husband's death. She said the interview is very uplifting and moving. It will air as a special on ABC, Wednesday evening, September 27th.

####

Thanks SusanE for the very interesting reading material. Classes for Thoroughbred race horse owners. How interesting. Owners need to follow the example of the Jacksons and other responsible owners who truly care about the horses they breed. Paul Sorvino rescued a beautiful grey thoroughbred who will be trained for young equitation riders. I can see the smiles on those kid's faces now when they ride that beauty.

To all Fans of Barbaro, may your commitment be renewed today with the breaking dawn. Tired bodies and weary hearts gain strength in the knowledge that we can make a difference and we will. We stand united through example; our Barbaro's spirit and will in his daily battle.

Hi again Alex....hope your morning weather is great and all the horses behaved.

Bobbycakes good morning to my adopted son. Waiting for the ACN for you.

Regarding our informing people of the horse slaughter situation and contacting them:
Forgive me if this has been posted yesterday or earlier by someone else. I touched on it during an earlier post but did not go into enough depth. Contacting as many people as we all want to reach can be an enormous and frustrating job for an individual trying to obtain a goal. If you can form a "net" that spreads far out, the job will be easier. Call 6 reliable people (more would be nice but 6 is "doable" for busy people)and have each of them commit to informing their senators. Then each 6 will call 6 of their reliable friends and on and on....and now you have a "networking" system of callers spreading far beyond your reach. There is power in numbers and this is the only way that I see most economical and sensible for informing and contacting. You may have a few not doing the calling but 2 of the 6 WILL call and you still have gained ground that you as an individual could not gain. I'm calling 6 today even if things looked stalled in Washington and building a network for the horse slaughtering situation.

Hiya, Bobbey! Greeings on a beautiful, sunny, & crisp Autumn morning. Hope that you have a nice horse blanket to keep you toasty at night! Wishing you a sun-kissed grazing day, sweet prince. Hugs, pets, & "scratches" from your pals in coastal CT - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita

Question for Alex: What is a Tapeta surface?

PS: There was just a great story on Good Morning America about horses that are being used to help veterans (who've each lost a leg) to learn to ride. It was a very heart-warming story. Why couldn't some of the Kaufman horses be adopted by VA facilities? Robin Roberts really liked that story. She should be contacted about S1915. Unfortunately, I'm off to work now. Perhaps someone could try contacting GMA today?

Posted by: Robyn Hoffmann at September 26, 2006 11:34 AM

Good morning everyone. I'm thrilled to hear that Barbaro had acn. Tapeta surface? What's that? Does the switch happen because of the changing weather?

To All Fans of Barbaro, keep up the good fight. In time we will be victorious!

Have a wonderful day big guy!

It warms my heart and I am so grateful for the level of committment I see on this board re: the horse slaughterhouse issue. It lifts me up whenever I start to get discouraged. And I agree that our brave Barbaro is our inspiration.

Good Morning Alex and the rest of Family Barbaro,

Alex, what a treat you must get every morning especially if it is going to be a clear day! Thanks so much for the detailed and informative updates and notes. Do you know whether this Sunday's race be televised?

Debbie (I'm in a rush so I apologize if I got the wrong name.) you're description of your visit to Fair Hill was great. It's nice to think that the doe was challenging the car to advance any further onto "her" property.

Last, but certainly not least, is to the Big Guy himself. How are you this morning Mr. B. I read that you had ACN, which makes me so happy. Looks like another spectacular day for your trip outside.

It was good to read the other day, that you felt good and showed it by bucking a little. Slow and steady. I know you must be sick of these words but you're doing better every day because of that and the super wonderful care by the Barbaro Medical Team.

Oops. Late again. Gotta run, actually with me it is walking also.

Love ya,

Good Morning Barbaro and Fans of Barbaro

So good to hear ACN, will never take those words for granted, though. Everday, Barbaro, you receive lots of prayers, positive energy and best wishes from all your fans. You inspire all of us to be the best we can be.

Will get started again this morning contacting my senators and as many other senators that I can reach on behalf of the Anti Slaughter Bill. Senator Dewine's office does respond. However, Senator Voinovich evidently doesn't feel the need to respond to his constituents.

Mr and Mrs Jackson, Dr R, Michael Matz, Edgar, and all who love Barbaro, you are in my prayers.
So many good things are being accomplished in honor of Barbaro. Thank you, Mr and Mrs Jackson, for sharing Barbaro with all of us.

Alex, you are the best.

BARBARO - We are happy to hear you are doing well. When you get well, we hope you stay with your mom and dad. We would love to see you, but it is more important that you are happy and safe. No one will care for you as good as they have. So, you stay home and don't run away. You never know who you may run into.

Kathleen,

You fascinate me!

Alex,

Thanks for the update. As we head into October we can all praise the good Lord that ACN is the common theme of the updates now for weeks and months. There is much healing left, we won't relax fully until Barbaro is rolling in the grasses, but ACN and this beautiful early fall weather sure feels good.

Much love to all

OKAY -

Onto the fight.

How many of you remember this:

In 2002, Georgia HB16 (flag change) cost Governor Barnes and state legislators their seat. Georgians did not want their flag changed, on Election Day the had the power to vote and took action. Had they listened to the voices of the people, none of the legislators would have lost their seats. Even the ones that did not vote were seen as ignoring the voices of their people and also lost their seats.

The moral of this story is LISTEN TO OUR VOICES, we may not have the power right now, but come Election Days, we will remember.

Dora, I know what you mean about the ebay auction for the Barbaro models - they were going for over $100 I say (one could only hope they would give the 'profit' to the Barbaro Fund.

(currently, there are a couple with Buy it Now at $89.00)

Hmmm, wonder if one could auction off the model and all the proceeds benefit the New Bolton Barbaro Fund?

Socorro, I echo your questions to Kathleen. K - if you need someone to talk to, the people here are very compassionate, very understanding. Otherwise, your posts make no sense to me. Am sending energy to you to help heal your heart and mind.

Good Morning, Barbaro!!! Its another sunshiny day here in Chester County. Will be a lovely day for you to graze outdoors. I know you are getting antsy, bored, but this is how it has to be until you're better. We're all being patient.Shine on you crazy diamond, but be patient.

Alex, I want to see Fair Hill when the autumn foliage peaks. It has to be even more beautiful than it already is. May also pick your brain about website design - since we know the excellent work you do...:)

LITF - still miss your physical presence, but I know you are greeting some beautiful animal spirits at the Rainbow Bridge. That is comforting to know, my Long Time Sun.

New mantra??? No retreat, no surrender (isn't that a Springsteen song?).

Will be e-mailing senators today. Someday, somehow, we're gonna win this one.

Must go...will light candles today. Will be an easy day for me to regroup and rest.

Take care, everybody.

Good morning all and another great day for Barbaro!!! Not sure if some of you caught "Good Morning America" today, but in the first segment when they came on, (7:00AM EST), they had soldiers who came home from the Iraq and Afganistan who have lost limbs. These soldiers spend time at the riding stables(not sure which branch, where they keep the horses for funerals at Arlington)for exercise as just sitting on a horse while the horse is lead by another soldier helps in their balance, actual walking with artifical limbs, and just better overall health. The comment was made about the three horses featured on how the horses sense the sensitivity of the issue and are very gentle. Oh course, I got all rainy eyes when I thought how wonderful this program is and then how dark about how we slaughter these beautiful creatures. At the end of the segment, you can certainly tell Robin Roberts on that show is a horse/animal person and she is usually the one giving an update on Barbaro. Bottom Line is the government, as military branches ,still use horses for the good, so how can they turn their heads, our elected officials.

I am always so delighted to hear Barbaro had another good night. I apologize for not being as faithful as you “regulars” who take time to post each day. Anna, Mary S, Melissa, Shelley to name just a few. Mary S in particular you make my day with your powerful prayers. While I don’t post often , be assured I do read and respond by doing what I can in terms of making calls or sending emails for the current Barbaromaniac effort. I’ve read over the past several days that we have hit a “wall” so to speak in the “Anti Slaughter” bill getting pasted.

An ideal came to me over the weekend, then again yesterday and more strongly this morning. You know like trying to tune in a radio station. It was so clear to me this morning that I had to post it. We were all called here to be a part of something much larger than can be easily explained. We were called from coast to coast and beyond the oceans. Who would have ever guessed that a nation of people come together, put aside their politics, and pool their religious believes on behalf of a horse. That said, prayer has played a vital role in Barbaro’s recover. Dr, Dean I am sure would be the first to agree with that statement. So my idea is this, if we are meeting resistance by trying to bring this Anti Slaughter measure thru the front door. Perhaps it’s time to set aside some serious prayer time (in addition to our Bobby time) just for this measure so it can be walked in the back door. If there are spies reading our postings, well they need to start getting real nervous about now. Prayer is a powerful weapon as God becomes the one they are fighting. God is faithful to open doors we can not. If this is indeed His wish to end the in human slaughter of horses, well the rest of this story will be history won’t it. If someone has already posted this comment, I am sorry but I must have missed it

Here is our letter to Senator Frist:

Dear Senator Frist:

As the Senate session approaches recess, we are fighting a difficult war, to put a stop to the slaughtering of horses for human consumption in the United States. We are told to deal with the facts and not compassion because politicians don't care about compassion. If anyone would read the facts and see the images of horses in a slaughterhouse, they would understand our compassion, and horse slaughtering would have stopped a long time ago. So, YES, we are COMPASSIONATE about seeing S.1915 pass because of the facts.

While politics are being played, horses are being slaughtered. You are an intelligent man and you know the facts. Those politicians that are trying to convince themselves that slaughtering is the humane thing to do are only fooling themselves and showing their true selves to the voters.

We will continue to fight for S.1915 and someone will make a difference. Please be the person that makes a difference. You have the POWER to put S.1915 on the floor. Whether or not the Bill passes or fails, you did your job. You can always look back and say to yourself you did the right thing. Facts have been presented and ignored. Our voices are being ignored.

In 2002, Georgia HB16 (flag change) cost Governor Barnes and state legislators their seat. Georgians did not want their flag changed and took action in the elections. Had they listened to the voices of the people, none of the legislators would have lost their seats. Even the ones that did not vote were seen as ignoring the voices of their people and also lost their seats, some were incumbents with over 20 years experience.

Please have the courage to place S.1915 on the floor. The majority those aware of slaughtering horses for human consumption are against it and many more will become aware during this election year.

Respectfully,

Thanks again for the updates and items about Fog (such a beauty) and of course our beloved Barbaro. I pray every morning I will read your "another comfortable night..."

I'm not very strong, but if I were, I'd like to go to those slaughter houses and stand in front of the doors and not let anyone in. It breaks my heart and those people should be ashamed. No amount of money justifies this. How do these people sleep at night???

###
Funny thing happened with my dad at the rehab facility. He had a stroke on 9/11 and is there to get better. Well last Monday, he swore that he saw smoke coming from the vent in the ceiling. He went on and on about this. I was so concerned, I wasn't sure what was going on. There wasn't any smoke and I was worried about his mind. Well, my dad and I had talked about Barbaro and LITF. So the next day, I told him that the smoke he saw was really fog and that Foggy had come to say goodbye. He liked that alot. And who knows, maybe that is what it was. anyway it made him feel better. This lapse hasn't happened again....so who knows really.

Heaven knows I mentioned it to his nurse, who is a big horse fan, and she was calling about the anti-horse slaughter bill. Just one person at a time.

I am so happy to hear about Senator Kennedy. His aide was one of the nicest that I spoke to yesterday and actually suggested I followup with an email so he could pass it around. There are some good people in government. Let's not forget that. Granted, maybe not enough of them.

The aide in Senator Biden's office was really pleasant, too. At the end I said something about recognizing there were many critical national and international issues the senators have to consider and before I could go on, he said but this is important, too, meaning HR1915.

Posted by: Sally in Key West at September 26, 2006 2:36 PM

I may get in trouble with ebay but I emailed the seller a nice note informing them that these are still available but I bet they didn't know that. Didn't say where 'cause I don't want them buying them all up. Threw in that they must be a lover of horses since they sell the models so I sure hoped they were working for the passage of S1915. Guess they could report me to ebay to kick me off but that will only save me money. Seller will probably think what a nutcake but maybe they really don't know about the model or S1915.

We have a wonderful Therapeutic Riding Center in our area. It began as a place for physically and mentally challenged children to attend. The horses do things for those kids that no other programs can. Well, I saw an ad in our local paper this week for volunteers to help with a new program for Veterans that they will be starting in November. Horses help mankind so very much, mankind needs to return the favor.

###

This is an excerpt from the People magazine article entitled "Whoa". " Helmut Blume, a veterinarian who was a USDA inspector for 37 years, sold for 300 dollars each two of his own horses, which were suffering from an incurable foot disease, to buyers he knew were sending them to be butchered.'I felt I at least got some of my money back,' says Blume, who currently has six horses on his 12-acre Salem, Ore. farm. '(Horse owning)is a business. You want to make a profit.'"

He actually sounds proud that he turned a profit.
I will never understand some of the things human beings do.

DORA -

You could be joking, but seriously don't think it isn't happening. Where I used to work, we would pose as someone else to find out our competitor's prices and what they had to offer.

I was young, I wouldn't do that anymore. That's why I say, things come back to hunt you.

If I remember correctly, did you say you were JW at one time?

If they want to use our name, they would have to figure out what the initials stand for.

Hi Alex. Thank you SO VERY MUCH for your endurance and patience and hard work. Your updates are rivaled by none!

Good Morning everyone. There is a reward for us somewhere down the road. A horse will come up to each one of us someday, and we will just know that he/she is thanking us, in their own way. We will know!

#### Future project,maybe?
Being ordinary citizens, is it possible for us to reach out to citizens in France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, and Japan? Within the business equation, "Supply and Demand", these countries are half of that equation - Demand. If we reach out, maybe we could cut down on or eliminate the demand entirely. Just people to people. And by showing sensitivity to their different cultures, in some way, maybe we can express our sorrows over our horses? Just a thought. We have some very eloquent writers in this Posse. I have relatives in Italy who could spread our plight within their media circles. Just something to think about as we face another day.

Don't know if this will help but a friend "in the know" said that if the bill doesn't go up for vote before the recess not to worry too much as we may have even a better chance after the election.

I'm not letting off on the pressure at the moment but I thought this might be something to consider.

Bless all of you for caring!

Thank you for the offer.

Louise offered, but if she can't for some reason, then I will appreciate it.

Do you live in Georgia? Do you remember that race, completely changed Georgia's Government.

We lost alot of good people due to the Flag issue.

Be sure in your contacts with your senators to mention now that Senators Kennedy and McCain are now co-sponsors. They (esp kennedy) are well respected and that could be enough to push the rest over to also become co-sponsors!!

what great news to hear!! I am sending both those senators thank you emails for that, I suggest others also send thank you notes to them!!

Future project-Margie

Margie that is a great idea!! I sent a e-mail to Mr. T. Boone Pickens yesterday asking if he could help get the word out to people in these countries about most of these horses being "pets" that were stolen and sent to slaughter, and also being given shots that are labeled "not for animals intended for human consumption". I read an article that stated most people in these countries do not know that these horses are our companion animals that they are eating. I'm sure that eveyone knows but Mr. Pickens is a very wealthy business man here in Texas and him and his wife joined the anti-slaughter campaign about 6 months ago. His e-mail is boone@boonepickens.com incase anyone else would like to send him more information.

SOCORRO-
Oh yea-I was a JW, not baptized tho. Got out kinda ran out, was raised that way by mom(when she was living) all my aunts,granny-they were ALL JW. All my relatives still living are still active, but hardly none of my cousins, only their moms, no dads, just my aunts. weird huh? Funny thing is...it is so ingrained into myself-I still have never experienced a birthday party/cake/present or holiday party/presents etc. Even in school my bro-sis and I were not allowed to attend on days of "holiday" partys. Was not allowed to sing patriotic songs, had to sit during Pledge of Allegience, etc. So, I basically am kinda a weirdo. Sorry for the personal (really personal) info (TMI?)

People from Tennessee #####

Have I read that Senator Frist is retiring ? ?

I think he is. .. So could we not appeal to his

legacy . His legacy is where he is vulnerable.

Senator Frist is a medical doctor who goes on
mission trips to do surgery on children, & people
in the third world who have no medical care. This
man has a heart and a conscience , but also has
the dispassionate eye of the scientist/doctor.

Steve--I am so glad he ate. I agree, whatever and whenever he eats--it does not matter. My little brat Sweetness loved cheese, blueberry muffins and pizza, she tried to eat her Iams but instead really focused on her fav. blueberry muffins oh yea, she would get really healthy for some reason when I had these around. Boy do I miss her sweet little black hairy self, had the sweetest little meow, sweetest little yellow/green eyes. Let me shutup-i already cry enough, now I will start about her brother Boo again too.

Good Luck Steve, give the boy anything he wants. My Grayson (one of the my cats at boyfriends house) loves yogurt & pudding cups, ya oughta see him try to stick his head in cup!!!hilarious...he is a little piglet!

SO....I hit the phones and placed a call to my contact, the fabulous Frank Walker, who was so kind to me last week...He was in a briefing, and I was able to leave a voice mail re: co-sponsoring the bill...Frank is a good guy and returns his calls, but he knows that I will be calling throughout the day...hoping to catch him...

Karen W - thanks for the email address. My 2 Senators here in NM told me late last week that National Security, on our turf as well as abroad, will eat up all of the time in this Session. Since then, all I can think is educate, educate, and educate some more. I have been trying for over a week to get an editorial published in my local paper. The editors are ignoring it. And I was very cautious in my words not to be too graphic. I quoted numbers, and gave a very general outline. Most people cannot handle the factual info regarding H.S. I do feel that reaching out and spreading the word of this horrific activity will be a real boost in protecting our dependant animals.

Posted by: Margie at September 26, 2006 3:55 PM

###
Dora--Good for you. I thought about doing that, too, but didn't. I'm glad you did. I did get a response from the seller who just reiterated that the Breyer site was sold out so apparently I didn't reach them at this time. I just replied that I knew there were dealers selling at the original cost due to the fact that Barbaro has an ongoing life threatening (hate! to say that) injury. Hard to appeal to those who don't want to hear.

Posted by: Sam I Am at September 26, 2006 3:56 PM

SALLY-you are so bad!! I only sent info to two folks, and one did not go thru, came back to me,koo-koo!! luv-ya :) You can do a bid retraction, but have to say either 1. entered wrong amt. or 2. seller changed description of item or 3. cannot contact seller, Just so ya know

I was involved with them, but found it difficult to knock on peoples' doors. I remembered how I used to feel when I wasn't a JW and would have them knocking at the my door.

As for my son as he was growing up, I let him make his own decisions, even as a child. Never liked forcing my believes on anyone.

A person can see something in one perspective and another can see it in a different perspective, you put them together and you have a great combination.

Sally--
You might contact the seller and tell them that you just discovered they aren't sold out and ask them to ignore your bid. I had to do this once when an item was advertised as no longer available and lo' and behold there sat an entire shelf of them at a local store. My seller was very nice, apologized and said she had wrong info and this was actually after I won. Don't know about this seller tho...their description is technically correct but very misleading.

Sally Key West-
I hope that is your highest bid, if it is maybe it will not be so bad. You could give it as a gift, or sell it yourself and give the proceeds to the horse charity of your choice.

Posted by: Dora J Crow at September 26, 2006 4:08 PM

Margie I agree, right now is the time to call, e-mail, fax these senators. But I agree with you that the more people become aware of this more and more voices will be heard. I would not eat horse meat period. But people in other countries have other beliefs, however I think if they were educated as to where these animals were coming from or what was given to them that could make the meat not fit for human consumption they may change their minds.

Socorro - great letter, great info on the Georgia flag, it will happen over the horse issue !!!

Judy Walker - I am in for the prayer every night at 7:00 eastern time ?? Thats 6:00 Texas time.

Pam Mross - you may not be strong but you are with us, we will get this done.

Louise - your story gave me chills

I am working on K.B. Hutchinson to cosponsor, have been e-mailing, faxing and calling.

Same for John Cornyn, thinking of other ways to reach him, his wife does radio spots for education maybe I can reach her e-mail, fax or phone.

Calling, e-mailing, faxing Senator First and Stevens. Senator Frist's office was a little tired around 5:30 yesterday when I called (couldn't believe that they were still there) but they were very polite. I kept taling and they said that they understood. But could only put a check in a block.

It is a sad thing that politics today are "good old boys" making deals in back rooms out of public view. Most of the time thwarting the will of Congress and the will of the people. Vote them out of office like Socorro said the people in Georgia did.

Talk radio shows are also a good way to bring awareness to this situation. I have a list of local people to e-mail or call.

Thank you Alex for all your articles, they are so interesting

Barbaro, my prayers and love continue as we mount this drive to save all horses from the horrific end of their lives at the hands of the foreign owned companies that are driven by greed and inhumanity to the noble horse.

Debbie LA, D'Anne, Socorro et al re "that post" the term "sucking wind" is..well....kinda crude. "That post" baffled me too, as it relates to the here and now, or doesn't, actually. I generally don't respond to such posts but I'm really scratching my head over that one.

Dora J. Crow, sweet one, you really said it best. I often forget EVERYONE I want to include in my prayers, but you said it so eloquently, quoting one of my favorite verses of all times and the title of a book by one of my favorite writers of all times, Mr. James Herriott. Bless ALL creatures great and small

I also forgot to convey to you all last night ( I was absolutely THRASHED ) that my best responses yesterday were from Senator Kennedy's and Senator Biden's offices. I just read that Senator Kennedy is now on board. He is so amazing. I also just remembered that he just lost his sister, Patricia Kennedy Lawford, on September 18th ( that was bad week, wasn't it) and I didn't even think to convey my sympathies to the lovely man in his office yesterday. In case anyone is inclined to call today, you might give your condolences along with your thanks. I gotta do that right now

Will check in with you all later

Please repeat what you told Senator's Kennedy's people about what would happen to horses not slaughtered, you may have things I can add

Thank you!

Another Comfortable Night for the bestest big bay boy. What a good boy! Alex, what would we do without you? I was re-reading updates and comments from Day One and the Big Picture begins to emerge. Wow.

How wonderful that Sen. Kennedy has become a co-sponsor of S 1915.

The news of use of horses in therapy for amputee soldiers is BIG, IMO. Maybe we should mention this in talking to aides of uncommitted Senators from this point on. I plan to.

When my Shanty and I were volunteering at a handicapped rider facility, there was a woman with both legs gone below the knee, who owned and rode a re-habbed Standardbred. An eye-opener for me.

Mike - thrilled to hear that your little old 6 lb bundle of love started eating. (!) That is the best news possible with an ailing kittie. Jake - hope Daisy also continues improving.

As far as eating strange things rather than "cat food" - my small animal vet subscribes to the philosophy, when they are sick, whatever they will eat is OK. (except only onions and egg whites and chocolate) When my last kidney failure patient cat, Monkey, who made it to 19, was reaching the end of her life on earth about 3 years after diagnosis, she survived at the end on oatmeal with 1/2 & 1/2, sweetened with maple syrup. She also liked egg yolks fried up in bacon grease. (I was just trying everything, and that worked.) The vet said fine, and my health food store professional says that maple syrup contains certain nutrients not available from other foods, that are very beneficial. You might also try Colostrum as a food additive; it counteracts the acidic effects of kidney failure. Available in powder form, and they love it.

Dora J Crow - glad you are "mobile" once more. You think your cars from the early 90's are old - I drive a 1977 Mark V Lincoln Continental, and you should have seen the way that baby held the road for me when the right front tire exploded week before last at 65 mph with an 18-wheeler right next to me... Funny thing, as it happened, I was singing one of my songs, that starts: "Janis asked the Lord for a Mercedes Benz, and the very same year she met a tragic end; I just want some mercy - you can keep your Mercedes Benz - and then I wrote - Dear Lord, Please protect my Ford; I've said it before but I never meant it more! If you're not dead like they say you are, please take care of me and my car! Rock & Rollin' down the Road ...."

Keep up the good fight - never retreat - never surrender.

Ernie - your post late last night about winning horse blankets on EBay and having them sent direct to Miracle Horse Rescue, was indeed a wonderful thing. Can you please repost that info? THANK YOU! CJ in Hammond IN

Hola Barbaro family

Thank you for ACN champ.

SusanO I really admire your efforts on the list. I know it is a lot of work. Thank you.

Today I apparently inverted senator Isakson's Fax # and faxed one of the fact sheets to a bakery in DC....OOPS. I know because they faxed back asking if this was real.

It gives me hope that most people react with shock when they hear about SH's for the first time.

Marky, I love it about the bakery! There are no coincidences. :-)

you know it Annie. I faxed back with a few websites and asked if they would hang it in the bakery.

Not quite the same as "landing" senator Kennedy, LOL, but every bit helps. MA FOBS that is great news!

I just went to Sen. Kennedy's website, and under "contact us" filled in an email form; I scrolled down all the possible topics, and the slaughter ban was NOT listed, so I had to check "other" on the form. Here is the text of what I just sent:

Topic - "Other" - Horse Slaughter Ban

Dear Sen. Kennedy - Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for having signed on as a co-sponsor of the Horse Slaughter Ban, S 1915. I wish I lived in MA so I could vote for you!

Is there ANYTHING you, with your seniority and stature, can do to get S 1915 to the Senate floor for a vote before year's end? Horses continue to die in this horrible way every day until the Senate follows the lead of the House (which as you know, passed HR 503 by an overwhelming margin). If so, I implore you to do so.

THANK YOU for signing on as co-sponsor, and PLEASE try to get this to a vote ASAP. (my name)

Hello Barbaro and everyone-
I just wanted to say you all are so inspiring and infectious in your enthusiasm about getting S 1915 passed. Keep up the great work!

I love your prayers. I looked through the posts today just to find them.

Then I called his office, (202) 224-4543, and got a nice aide named Derrick who took the info; he knew who Barbaro is, btw. I then I asked him, does Sen. Kennedy have any advice for a large group of people across the nation, what to do to try to bring S 1915 to a vote; reminded him horses are still dying horribly in the meantime; he said Sen Kennedy always tries to get legislation he is interested in, to a vote, but when I pressed, what advice if any does he have for US (I told him we were targeting Sens. Edwards & Frist, what ELSE was recommended) - he said he would look into it and try to have some answer for me later today. Will call back later and keep you posted.

thanks, Cheryl

############# Dora J Crow - you said, your cat Sweetness seemed to get better whenever you had blueberry muffins around for her to share with you - FYI - Blueberries - like Cranberries - are specific nutrients for fighting problems with urinary tract. So anyone with a kidney patient cat - consider this. CJ in Hammond IN
