    Barbaro Updates: 86

    updates are now here.

Update 728: Something Wild ran a nice third today at Laurel. I just caught up with Tim, by cell phone, as he was returning from the races. Something Wild was in a fourteen horse allowance field, "never win a race other than" condition. He broke sharply, was taken slightly off the pace, moved down to the rail going around the turn and basically ran a gutsy race. He seemed to cool out well. His owner, Walter Simek, from Arizona, flew in for the race.

Update 727: Peter just called, he had heard from Michael who had visited Barbaro this afternoon. Barbaro remains comfortable. A quick, upbeat report. And then Kathy Anderson called. She was just leaving New Bolton (6:35 pm). She again said he looked good, very bright. Mrs. Jackson and Dr. Richardson were both there during Kathy's visit. Barbaro was munching on hand-picked grass!

Update 726: Just moved the site. There was some whacky behaviour during the move, but I think it is now functioning. On a more somber note, we have lost two more athletes, Precisionist and Second of June, who many recently saw running second in the Woodward.

Update 725: Jeannine Edwards just sent me the following e-mail regarding ESPNs plans for racing this weekend:

Here is a preview of Sat's show.....

After a 3-week hiatus (during which I was on vacation riding in the WY wilderness.... doesn't get any better than that!) the live ESPN horse racing coverage continues on Saturday with the "Countdown to the Cup" series, 4-6pm ET. We're really looking forward to these next 3 shows, Sept 30, Oct 7, and Oct 14 in anticipation of the Breeders' Cup on Nov 4 (also on ESPN.) Most of the key contenders in each of the 8 BC race divisions will be in action over the next 3 weeks... we'll see all the stars of our sport, in their final prep races. It should be very exciting! We'll even have a look at the European contingent for the BC on our show this weekend, as we have a 2 1/2 minute international feature from across the pond.

This Sat's show features 4 big races... the Clement Hirsch and Yellow Ribbon from Oak Tree (Santa Anita), the KY Cup Classic from Turfway Park, and the Kelso Handicap from Belmont. Our "host" location is Santa Anita. I can't wait to see The Tin Man run in the Clement Hirsch... he's a marvel. 8 years old and in the best form of his life, after 2 seriously bowed tendons, ankle injuries, and various other minor ailments. He's spent about 3 years on the sidelines, and has been carefully managed by his trainer, Dick Mandella, who says The Tin Man is his all-time favorite horse and the barn pet. He's quite a character and has endeared himself to all those around him. He reminds me of John Henry... small, plain-looking, but with the heart of a champion. He'll be running in his 3rd Clement Hirsch and 3rd BC Turf... he first competed in both races in '02. We have a 2 1/2 minute feature devoted to The Tin Man on our show. Joan, one of our Associate Producers, is interviewing Mandella and The Tin Man's owners tomorrow (Wed) for the story.

In the Yellow Ribbon, 3-year-old Wait A While takes on older mares for the first time in the Yellow Ribbon on turf. Wait A While is shooting for her 4th win in a row. She'll face tough California mares like Dancing Edie and Live Life, but she appears to be on a roll right now for Todd Pletcher and has really made her presence felt in the distaff turf division. She gets a big test on Sat.

Our old friend Perfect Drift is running again this Sat, in the KY Cup Classic. He's such a cool horse, and always tries his best. I think the track was not particularly suited to his running style in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar. He's done well at Turfway (won 4 of 6 starts) but not since they switched over to the Polytrack surface... should be interesting to see how he handles it. He zipped through a sharp 5-furlong workout over the track about 2 weeks ago in his only "trial run" on the surface. Premium Tap, who last won the Woodward at Saratoga, and Gouldings Green, who's been super consistent this year, are his chief rivals.

At Belmont in the Kelso, it should be an interesting match-up between Godolphin's Ashkal Way, who's won 4 of his 5 starts and has been a pleasant surprise for his connections since coming to this country in the spring, Meteor Storm, an old (7) campaigner who's made over $1.3 million but hasn't raced since December (was nearly retired to stud) and may prefer more ground than the one-mile of the Kelso, and Friendly Island... a sprinter who's never raced beyond 7 furlongs and never been on turf. They're feeling him out for a possible start in the BC Mile on Turf. The Pletcher stable's confidence in him jumped way up when he scorched through a 1/2 mile workout on turf last week... :47.4 on a turf course that doesn't play fast.

Lots of great stories, interviews, and exciting racing to look forward to on Sat. And of course, we'll update everyone on Barbaro and include a tribute to the late great Lost In The Fog.

Update 724: I just met Rick Rosenblatt, who wrote this story for the AP, which was published yesterday: Barbaro looks good; still has ways to go. Rick was in Fair Hill, and likely writing a follow up story. He visited Barbaro yesterday, so I had to ask him for his report! He said he looked bright in his eye, and alert. Any unexpected sound garnered his attention. He was out grazing, and took a little nip out of Rick's trouser leg. Anyway, Rick seemed pretty happy with what he saw. He had previously seen Barbaro in the ICU, a couple of months ago. The AP also took a bunch of photos yesterday (so they are the most recent), you can see a few at espn: Horse Racing Photo Wire.

Here's another poignant poem: For Every Horse an Angel.

Update 723: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (tuesday night). I just saw Michael Matz by the clocker's stand. He had heard from Dr. Richardson. Also another absolutely gorgeous morning here at Fair Hill. Beautiful sunrise, a thin layer of mist coming out of the ground, plenty of deer grazing...I am currently stood behind the gate on a two year old to do a bit of gate schooling and then we'll open gallop a quarter down the lane.
    updated wednesday 7:20am

Update 722: Julie created this wonderful memorial to Lost in the Fog.

Fans will be able to celebrate Lost in the Fog on saturday at Golden Gate Fields: Track to honor Lost in the Fog. The following is an excerpt:

Golden Gate Fields will salute Eclipse Sprint champion Lost in the Fog, his owner Harry Aleo and trainer Greg Gilchrist on Saturday. A special DVD featuring each of the colt's victories will be given away, and career highlights will be shown throughout the day.

Golden Gate Fields has been swamped with requests about the video and had fans from as far away as Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey inquire about attending the day to pay their respects to the colt, who was euthanized on Sept. 17 after battling cancer.

Donations in the name of Lost in the Fog can be made to the Glen Ellen Vocational Academy, Northern California's only non-profit horse rescue and rehabilitation facility. The GEVA address is P.O. Box 2101, Glen Ellen, CA 95442.

"If it's something to help horses, I'm always for it," said Aleo, who has allowed GEVA to auction off pictures of the colt in the past.

This Bloodhorse article: Crystal Clear is a wonderfully written article about the Fog. It begins:

He was special; a simple word that seems inadequate, but at the same time says it all. He was speed incarnate, not just blazing fast but white-hot fast, able to run a second quarter faster perhaps than any horse before him. He was without pretensions, no blue-blooded pedigree or flighty temperament. He was all business.

An update was posted to the IN HONOR OF BARBARO RESCUE CHALLENGE, providing the status of the fifth challenge, this was swifty met, you have raised more than $9,000!

    Good Morning Everyone

CNN's Solidad O'Brien just discussed Barbaro. The piece did not last very long but she and Miles talked about how well his hoof is healing and how happy they are to see him doing so well. I had emailed them about a weekago concerning the Anti Horse Slaughter Bill and got no answer. Maybe if more of us would contact them, they would do a piece on the Bill.

Good Morning Barbaro, you have so much love surrounding you. Have a wonderful day.

Hiya, Bobbey! Brrr, it's cool here on the banks of the Thames this AM. I hope that you are keeping toasty in your stall, sweet prince. Wish I could borrow your massage blanket! Kita is sound asleep on the bed this AM, despite waking me at 4:00 AM to go outside. "All creatures great & small." Hugs, pets, & "scratches" from your pals in CT - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita (the horse-loving Husky)

    #### Thanks to Alex for explaining about the track surface that will be laid down at FHF. Thanks as well for all of your efforts to get the site back up & running.

To Steve, it must be great to see BDude enjoying some of his favourite foods again. Here's to another good day for BDude!

To Cathy in NC and Mary S: Yes, that was an incredible story on ABC/GMA yesterday morning about the soldiers who'd lost limbs getting to learn to ride horses. Very heart-warming and shows that horses can do so much therapeutic work! I remember that Louisville had a wonderful "Exceptional Equitation" program for young people with retardation. Sure wish that the 'Kaufman 400' could be freed to learn to do some of these interventions. It would be a 'win/win' for horses & humans! ####

Wondered about the pony and how he is doing..anyone know? I'll call the Bladwin County Humane Soc...if I don't get an answer here, but I'm sure someone on this post is monitoring him. It really bothered me all night!!

Don't forget 20/20 Special tonight on Terri Irwin at 10 pm on ABC. People online has an excerpt. She states, " I take it minute by minute." " He is my prince." She and the children will continue to be "wildlife warriors" in order to honor Steve daily.

A few hours off line last night and I felt the same way I do when the power goes out during a storm...very anxious.

A wonderful day to all of the TWR family.

The story of the pony being dragged behind the truck just made me sick to my stomach. Why are such heartless people allowed to exist ?? I was always told that if a person could do that to an animal, he could do it to a human being. I never thought I would see the day when a man would tie a rope around a woman's neck and drag her through the streets of a Colorado neighborhood, and yet it happened. Hopefully, there will be a better outcome for this poor pony. The woman never had a chance. Such a sad, sad story and the inhumanity goes on.......

Posted by: Rosemary in Ohio at September 27, 2006 12:02 PM

Exactly my feelings...all night I kept waking up and thinking about that poor little guy? Last night he was in surgery......so I don't know what the outcome is and if anyone does have an update..I'd appreciate it.

Mary prayers for Toby. My Buster had it and they kept him going successfully for quite a while and I assume that medicine has come a long way since 1999. Prayers for you.....I know it's tough....bless you!

Good Morning fellow Fans of Barbaro

Debra WI emailed this to me and wanted to relay it along to all in case you are not aware.
I emailed them last night, told them that even though I am not a resident of Tenn., my concerns should be addressed by all US Senators I call, being this is a federal bill.

TENNESSEE PEOPLE! PLEASE HELP! WE HAVE THE ATTENTION OF ABC24/UPN30! Thanks for another great ACN update, Alex, and sounds like another beautiful Fair Hill morning!

Senator Ben Nelson’s (D-NE) Deputy Communications Director emailed me last night to confirm that he would get my letter directly to the Senator, who is on the Commerce Committee. Jim mentioned that Sen. Nelson has received MANY letters on this bill!

A couple of things I couldn’t post last night:
Lor in PA posted last night asking about horse rescues in her state. Lor—don’t know if this is close to you, but you might check Lost & Found Horse Rescue in York, PA. Here is their link: www.horsenethorserescue.org and phone is (717) 428-9701.

Sam I Am posted about Premarin and wondered about subsidiaries of Wyeth-Ayerst for a potential boycott of their products. Sam—Fort Dodge Animal Health, ironically is one of their companies! If you’re a pet owner, let your veterinarian know WHY you want no FD products used for your animals. If you’d like a list for specific species, let me know and I’ll post later. There is NO excuse for Wyeth not to care for the many PMU mares and the foals they are producing!

If anyone would like to order an “Until They All Have a Home Horse Adoption Bracelet” here’s the link: https://shop.theanimalrescuesite.com/store/item.do?siteId=310&itemId=29526&origin=85319 They’re only $15.95 and your purchase funds 14 bowls of food for shelter animals, plus a donation for the Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, TX. New item on this site! Stainless steel cuff bracelet, so guys can wear it, too!

And finally, for some really uplifting news, go to bestfriends.org and read all about their airlift of nearly 300 cats and dogs from Beirut to Kanab, Utah. They landed yesterday and all are safe and sound and soon ready for adoption. Chalk one up for the good guys!

Have a great day, everyone and BELIEVE IN BARBARO!

Have a good day, big boy, get in some grazing, munching, nipping and don't forget, healing too! God bless you and all who care for you.

He is a Bay like our Barbaro.
Have a doctor appointment today. After that I will be going by to check on him.
Paper reads, he has severe skin burns and bruising, with the knee joint on its front left leg totally exposed dur to abrasions from the pavement, said Hr Tim Stewart, who is treating the 3 1/2 year old pony at his Baldwin aninal clinic. he's doing very well considering what he's been through.

Conflicting information on the Baldwin County colt who was dragged. I read one message and my emotions soared with joy and then 3 messages later, I read the bad news - stomache dropped. How awful - no - awful doesn't quite describe it. We see the best and the worst on this site, don't we?

Thankfully everyone on team Barbaro - including all the "fans of Barbaro" are the best.

Any more information on the truckload of horses involved in an accident on the way to the slaughterhouse?

VERY IMPORTANT! 41 horses bound for slaughter overturned in a cattle truck just south of St. louis. Several have died and some are having to be euthanized. MOst have survived but are injured. The local Humane Society and Longview rescue ranch are taking the survivors and are going to try to keep them from being sent on for slaughter. They are going to need some financial help. Lets see what we can do for these poor animals that for some reason have been spared. The driver has been arrested, he had a warrant out for his arrest. I will get additional information and post it. I will also open something on the forum. Lets pull this together for these horses. I know we can do it. Jen

So as not to feel such overwhelming sorrow over these atrocities, we have to believe that for every evil there are multiple goods happening because compassion must win in the end.

The REALLY sad part about the pony here in Alabama is--the crime is only a misdemeanor. He will not be charged with a felony nor do any jail/prison time. He will get a little slap on the wrist a fine, maybe some type community service fulfullmint and thats IT! This white trash A$$ was shown on news with a ciggie hanging out of his skinny, no shirt wearing, getting handcuffed ugly selfs mouth. He looked like some skinny meth/crack head or something. I was gonna post about him last night, but site down. I saw Dawn in Omaha posted it--how did you get it? I only got to see it once on the news..cannot find it online on news site or newspaper site.Anyway...I am sorry that this happened in my state. We have so many freaks here already, but why torture a precious little pony? Did he neigh too loud, did he poop too much, was his mane too long, there is no excuse for what this hideous man did.

Another thing I found out from HSUS in Alabama that I did not know...in this state all horses are considered livestock ie: there is no state mandate dictating they have any type shelter/barn for the upcoming winter (or unbearable sun) I found this out because of two horses in a pasture w/no shelter that I called HSUS about to complain. He said there was not anything he or HSUS could do to,because the horses were only livestock, like cows, goats, pigs, etc. I was completely shocked. I have seen horses and other animals with ice on them w/no blankets in winter here. It may be Alabama, but it DOES freeze here and often.

BARBARO-I HAVE NOT NOR WILL NOT FORGET YOU BUDDY!! I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH AND AM ALWAYS HAPPY TO READ THE FASCINATING NEWS ABOUT YOU BIG OLE BOY. IT BRINGS A SMILE TO MY FACE. YOU ARE THE ONE BRIGHT SPOT AMONGST THIS HORRIBLE MESS OF HUMAN EXCREMENT,WE SEEM TO BE SWIMMING IN LATELY (ESPECIALLY IN ALABAMA) OUR SENATORS HERE ARE ALL JACKA$$SES AND DISAGREE AND ARE AGAINST s1915. SORRY BARBARO-GETTING OFF ON YOUR HEAD IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR POSITIVE OUTLOOK ON HEALING IS IT? So am I to understand that the horses were being hauled in a livestock trailer for cattle?? Is that not proof positive for these senators that this is INHUMANE TREATMENT of horses who are so much larger than cattle.

We must be the "good" that prevails over the evil now and help the humane society with the care of these horses. All things happen for a reason - they were spared for a higher purpose.

Wonderful news about Senator Carper. I'll email a thank you.

IMO We also need tougher penalties at the local level for people who mistreat/cause the death of an animal. Six months and a $1000 fine is too, too light--if the guy even gets that. I just wonder what in the world happened in this man's life that brought him to a point where he could do something like that.

Yes, I'd like a list for cats, dogs, horses. Thanks so much. I still don't use P&G because they did so much redundant animal testing. I don't know if they still do or not.

    Question for anyone
There was some discussion yesterday about bow strings. Won't there still be "rendering plants" or whatever the term is where the reamins of horses who have been euthanized humanely or died naturally are sent. Doesn't that provide enough hair, hoof and whatever else is needed to supply the demand?

While checking out Barbaro's great new pictures on ESPN site, I caught the headline of Terrell Owens attempted suicide. There is much to learn from Barbaro, the athlete. Here he is in his pictures with those awful, yet life-saving casts and bandages on those powerhouse legs for so many months. And yet the look in his eyes and the prick of his ears tells the whole story. Like Mrs. Jackson stated, he wants to the chance to live and every day he shows us that all things are possible with the right attitude.

MORE MOTIVATION TO BAN HORSE SLAUGHTER

Around 3:30 am (because they're sneaking around in the dark like the murderers they are) a trailer with 41 horses bound for the Cavel plant overturned in my metropolitan area, St. Louis. Dozens injured, an unstated number euthanized at the scene. The horses are in holding pens by the highway and those that aren't euthanized will probably be loaded onto another truck...

    http://ksdk.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=104394

The story does mention the slaughter ban briefly and provides links. God willing this will be a wake up call for people around here and these horses will not have suffered in vain.

Theoretically if enough people pray it's reasonable to expect a little divine intervention...

    FOBs:
This accident is a world-class opportunity to connect the horse/slaughter dot for the many many many people out there who aren't aware of it. Gently does it, and please, remember: When contacting your local station and dealing with "civilians" it's wise to steer clear of highly graphic...it's pretty hard to guess a random person's individual threshold, and ideally you don't want your "pitch" inadvertently blocked by somebody's unknown tolerance level.

Do you know or can you find out which slaughter house the horses were being transported to? If it was one in Kaufman or Ft. Worth, maybe I can get some coverage in Dallas about the slaughter houses if there is a local connection.
    Thanks.

Just spoke to a Lady at The Humane society. She is going to get me an official statement for me to put her. I told her about this group of people and she was very appreciative of what everyone is trying to do everywhere. She said that the horses are being taken to LONgMeadow rescue ranch to be cared for. At this time, she does not know how many survived.. The Humane society owns this ranch and she said it is very full without these horses, so they are going to work with some other groups to take them in. HERES THE CATCH- the owner of the horses, was not the driver. at this time, they do not know who he is or what he will do concerning these horses. They are going to do what they can to keep them from him. NOthing is guaranteed without financial help. Many of these horses are injured and are going to incur expenses that he might not want to mess with. That is our hope. She will call me back shortly with the appropriate information and we can go from there. Jen

BOYCOTT OFCANADIAN PROVINCES w/ HORSE SLAUGHTERHOUSES:

Remember, Canadian S-plants are destinations for the same horses we're trying to save in the US! (I think they slaughter Canadian horses too.)

The slaughterhouses in QUEBEC may be vulnerable to a boycott of tourism, since tourism is one of Quebec's major industries. A thousand letters from Americans saying they will not visit the Province of Quebec until they stop killing American horses might get their notice.

Here's the link to contact the Premier of Quebec, John Charest: http://www.premier.gouv.qc.ca/premier-ministre/nous-joindre/nous-joindre-en.shtml

There's a form for email, and it accepts American zipcodes. Under 'Subject' choose 'Tourism.'

!!!!! OK here is the official word from the Humane Society on the trailer accident. JUdy just got off the phone with the head of the rescue group at the site. Many of the horses had to be Euthanized. Donations will be badly needed for this rescue. Lots of injuries. Donations can be made to HUmane society of MO 1201 Macklind ave st. LOuis, MO 63110 or 314-647-8800. Their horse rescue ranch website is Longmeadow rescue ranch.org. Please specify any donations made to this particular rescue. She once again, thanks the fans of Barbaro for any help they can give. she told the people out at the rescue that we were waiting to do what ever we could for them. I have offered to foster one of these horses for them, if needed. If one of these horses come to my place, I guarantee that it will not leave to any slaughter owner! Jen

    Sue W.

    That is great.

The only additional thing I wished they had stressed in the Corpus Christi story is that S. 1915 needs massive citizen support in order to pass. I just sent the Corpus Christi reporter Senator Bill Frist's phone number (202-224-3135 --- OMG; that is correct; I now have it oficially MEMORIZED), and said that it would be great if he could do a follow up and mention that people who support the anti-slaughter bill need to call and ask him to move S. 1915 to the Senate floor for an immediate vote with no markups and no amendments.

Otherwise, how will people know how to respond to this sad situation?

Maybe the Illinois story can get that in there, in the first go-round...Thanks!

Jen - if their owner was already shipping them to the SH, how can the Humane Society step in and rescue them? If he says that he wants them slaughtered, can the Humane Society keep that from happening?

I read on the KSDK site that 15 died. That leaves 26 in need of our help. I will send a donation today.

In contacting tv stations for publicity,

we now need to provide Sen. Frist's phone number (202-224-3135)for people to call to help pass the bill. Maybe someone will run it on the air....Say that people should ask him to move S.1915 to the Senate floor for an immediate vote without markup or amendment.

sheila- these horses are injured and need veterinarian care. Horses that are injured legally can not be transported for slaughter, the humane society will not give them up that way. Right now they dont even know who the owner is. It was not the driver. He would probably be responsible for the expenses incurred. that is definitly a bargaining chip, that and VERY BAD PRESS. Jen

On another note... for everyone trying to get the new legistration S1915 passed to protect horses from the cruel fate, slaughterhouses. This is a must read article, called All the Pretty Horses

They were trying to close the plants down in 2003 and the article mentions a woman, "Mary Nash, a former horse owner and Kaufman resident who helped spearhead the fight against the plants."

She actually owns the farm next to that hell place in Kaufman. Her own web site has lots of valuable info, contacts, emails, articles going back 3-4 years. Sad pictures of young horses waiting in pens & hurt. :-( She would be a great ally & someone to work with in. Check it out!!

    To Alex---

Thank you for your tireless efforts on keeping all of us updated---linked --- connectected to everything we want to know learn, read and watch. You are a marvel of sincere energy.

In May, after I had watched the Preakness; and was hungry for constant news on Barbaro's condition I searched fervently until I happened upon the Tim Woolley Racing site. At first I didn't know what to make of it --- but; it didn't take long for me to find out that this was the go to place for everything related to Barbaro, to the scantly coverd sport of thorougbred horse racing, equine interests, and all of the ancillary issues.

Consequently a grand group of folks of one mind where horse, animals and humane conditions are of upmost concern came together. The TWR site has taken on a life of its own!

TWR is the first thing I go to in the morning(before ny long time staples of NPR and the New York Times-- they can wait , news that the on the ball Alex brings to us cannot!)

Thank you Alex and Tim for allowing all of this to flourish.

    P.S.
When I looked at the photos of Bobby grazing tears came to my eyes-- I wondered about the thoughts that have been going through his mind over these last four months. He looked a little bit wistful.--- Then I looked at Dr. Richardson who was beaming with joy-- perhaps pride -- pride in Barbaro's resilience --- Then I thought of Nureyev-- and the trial his dedicated friend/ vet went through without pause to keep him going until the battle was one. Then I thought of Foggie--- and knowing full well that there was no other choice for wonderful Foggie --- a comet that blazed through the sky -- I began to cry.

    RE : S1915

I had a long talk with Senator Isaakson's aide Brad Swann yesterday-- I encouraged him to encourage the senator to COSPONSOR Or the bill etc. Brad asked me to email him (a yet to be poublished article that I have been working on re S1915) he gave me a lot of time and was extremely informative. The bill as we all know is now stuck in the commerce committee as per Isaakson's office; as well as per Senator Stephens office.-- Until the holds are removed it ramains mired. What to do next?

Ok, wait til you hear this line of newspeak.

Made my 4th call to Frist's office today and pushed and pushed and pushed. Finally was connected to a gentleman who said he's afraid to bring it up because the dems will debate it for days if not weeks to keep so-called security issues off the agenda.

Told him most dems are for S1915 and how could he be strong enough to consider a run for Prez if he can't even push this through, but he remained adamant. Sure did get hot in my house from all the hot air. Oh Barbaro, we're trying, we're really trying, but some humans are something else.

Marilyn- these horses in St. louis have just become our silent messangers. Fox just did GREAT STORY on the accident. the reporter said she was horrified to find out where these horses were going and went into detail how they were going to foreign lands. They said the Humane society was going to try to keep them from their owners but it would take a lot of help. Jen

Dear friends--those of you who have commented on the atrocities of people who injure animals also being people who injure people--YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. There is overwhelming amounts of research to back up this statistic. Something to emphasize when you hear the phrase "It's just a horse/pony/dog/cat/bird etc."

Stay strong! we are indeed stampeeding.....

I just emailed every single reporter at the Fox station in St. Louis, and asked that the broader implications of this trailer accident be covered. I sent lots of backup info.

I put Sen. Frist's phone number right ini there, and mentioned that the Missouri senators are not yet co-sponsors...so, if nothing else, maybe a gazillion tv reporters will make their own calls, and get their friends to do so also.

Oh, Alex, thank you for the photos; I am so teary just to see how good Barbaro looks. Remembering that terrible day in May, when I could only hope against hope that his owners would take the shot, and even when I gratefully learned that they did, still it was such a distant glimmering hope that he would be ever be grazing in the grass again
(that day came, deliciously. August 9) and looking so good now. My face is wet. (and no, I am NOT a wimp.)

And to see that the Barbaro Challenge has raised over 9 grand to save horses - I AM KVELLING MIT NACHAS! Please everyone don't forget that Stephanie of Miracle Horse Rescue needs the wherewithal for vetting and maintenance as well. Thank you all for your continuing generosity. Alex, thanks for keeping this in the forefront with the links in the updates. (And don't forget to keep voting for her in the Volvo For Life awards. A way to help MHR without spending $. There are also several search engines you can use, that benefit MHR. Details at TWF.)

FAYE thanks for the update on your visit to MHR yesterday. The history on that new baby is amazing. TG for people like Stephanie and places like MHR. Without them I could not sleep at night, wondering what would happen to my sweet innocent Blackie, the best horse I never rode. Hopefully she will never go there and will spend the rest of her happy life with me where she is now, but if she outlasts me, she will have a forever home with Stephanie. I thank you all - especially the FIRST challenge-maker (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) for making this thing snowball as it has. (btw I got the sweetest card from Stephanie yesterday by snailmail. What a woman!)

Hadn't read anything except the updates when I came to post; and just noticed in the first comment up, that we have yet another co-sponsor; Yippee! Keep pluggin' folks. We can do this.

Here's a link to horse rescue org'ns in your state. I hope one of them is close to you.

    http://www.lovemypets.com/lmp/Rescue/?ParentCategory=177&ShowTheCategory=1

Anyone can google or goodsearch 'horse rescue +state' to find them in your area. If you can get involved with horses - up close and personal - it will change your life, because they're pure joy. Helping with my local rescue & sanctuary is what carries me through these grisly days working on closing S-plants.

Good luck! Let us know what you find.

Jen--Just read your 1:50 post regarding the slaughter truck. How tragic, but maybe these poor horses who were killed and traumatized will help so many others who would have suffered the same fate. Let's hope this horrible tragedy gets LOTS of press and creates even more awareness of the slaughter issue. It's just such a coincidence that this had to happen the SAME WEEK we're all working so hard to get this bill to the Senate. Maybe this awful accident will help to push it forward. How wonderful that the remaining horses will be saved! We all know they couldn't have been once the truck pulled into Dallas Crown. . .

Bless them all and bless the pony in Alabama.

Also, if any of you have students in college, please see if you can get them involved. What a nationwide resource that would be!

From the AP article... Dr. Richardson said,
"Basically, he's really not doing anything wrong the last couple of weeks, but there's still a long way to go."

My comment to this is... AND DR. RICHARDSON YOU ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING WRONG NEITHER. I love the care you are giving this great horse. You have decided to be a good VET and YOU deserve praise.

Also, to the Jacksons, other caregivers, folks on this website you all deserve praise too. It has been our LOVE and faith that has endured through the last four months. We are here for the long haul.

    Everyone
I just got an email from a reporter at KTVI St. Louis wondering whether they had been on some website; they are getting lots of mail. They seem to be on board now -- yes, St. Louis? They are all over anti-slaughter? Maybe we can leave it to the locals there to keep the pressure on them to keep covering this.

My email back to the reporter:

I belong to a grassroots coalition to ban horse slaughter, and our meeting place is at timwoolleyracing.com . We are working very hard to get this story out into the media because of the time-sensitive situation in the U.S. Senate, where nothing is happening on this bill...We feel terrible about this accident in Sullivan, but, as I said, it is a teachable moment.

Thank you for helping to get the word out. Most Americans have no idea that this is the fate of stolen horses, horses stolen at auction, etc. Most women have no idea where Premarin comes from. If this can get picked up by local, and then national, news over the next week or so, we do have a chance. Always, it is important to let people know what they can do -- call Senator Frist, call their own senators.

Carol Nichols, post 9/27 12:00 pm, reports a friend's dog is suffering from congestive heart failure. I have a simple tip for maintaining a critter with this malady, that cannot POSSIBLY hurt, and that a vet may not think to tell you. (None of mine ever did; I figured it out myself.) RAISE THE SURFACE THEY EAT FROM. The condition keeps the blood from circulating properly, so putting the head down to floor level where the food & water bowls usually are, makes the critter feel faint. Solution - put their bowls up, elevated off the floor. (I've seen a device for this purpose on sale at Petsmart.) My landlord's Gizmo (a/k/a "dead dog walking"), whose pill-pushing Nanny I am, gets his nummies from a bowl on an overturned cardboard box, elevated about to his head level. I used the same trick when I walked my old QH Joe (who eventually died of CHF) into a ditch where he could stand and eat grass at his head level without putting his head down, which he couldn't do anymore. (Anything to get them to eat!) Just a little commonsense tip that may really help, that you (sadly) are unlikely to hear from your vet. CJ the craziest catlady in Hammond IN

Mr. Frist, I happen to be a fellow Tennessean, and have been a patient in your office. I am getting numerous complaints about you, and your staff. People are telling me that they have tried contact you about the horse slaughter issue, which is a very important, and urgent issue. Your staff has been rude to people who have been trying to contact your office, and you have personally ignored any of these issues. Being from Tennessee, this is an embarrassment to me. You may think that this issue is not important to you, but I guarantee you that if you intend to further you career in politics, it is an issue that you should be on top of. People fighting to stop the slaughter of innocent horses are massive in number, and could ruin your political future. As for myself knowing that your staff being so rude to people, and you ignoring this issue, is enough to campaign against you for the next election. I assure you, ignoring this issue, is certain political suicide. I hope that your staff, is not too rude to ignore this, and that you will address this issue very soon. Thank you, Vicki Jasch

    Good Evening, Fans of Barbaro!

Just contributed to Hsmo.org. NOt much, but this accident just tears me up. This is what we were waiting for - just wish so many beautiful horses didn't have to be traumatized or euthanized. Such brave souls.

Was in a pet supply store earlier today getting things for the girls (my cats). One of the owners was "talking horse' to another customer. Apparently she was talking about a horse whose rider wanted it slaughtered for a really crazy reason (that was the rider's error - not the horse's)...that's all the opening I needed. I explained to her about TWR, Fans of Barbaro and S1915. The other customer was listening intently...and she also took my Reiki card.

    Today was a productive afternoon.

LITF, I feel your shining presence and I know you greeted all the new horse angels with gentleness and love, my Long Time Sun.

Barbaro, I love the new pics. Dr. R looks so relaxed and happy - you're so good for him. Shine on you crazy diamond. I'll be back after yoga to tuck you in.

Alex, thank you for navigating to the new host. You take such good care of us and I don't thank you enough.

For the warriors fighting to get S1915 to the Senate for the vote...

    No retreat, no surrender.

    Healing and Peace,
    Lyn Gilbert

    NEWS ALERT
PLEASE TAKE THIS OVER IN YOUR AREA

Please hit the local FOX affiliates

    Ask them to cover this
Give them the wider implications of the story

Oh, heck, here is what I sent to Fox St. Louis. I sent it to EVERY SINGLE REPORTER -- I just put them all into the email line. You can just cut and paste it and send it...But do send it to EACH REPORTER; that was what worked in St. Louis.

    MARILYN'S LETTER TO FOX AFFILIATES

Please pick up and cover a story out of Fox St. Louis, concerning the accident near Sullivan, Missouri which involves a trailer of horses bound for slaughter in Chicago. See Horses to be slaughtered for human consumption

This story presents a perfect, newsworthy, teachable moment concerning S.1915, an amendment to the Horse Protection Act, which would finally outlaw the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the U.S.

    S. 1915 is currently in trouble -- languishing in the Senate Commerce Committee. The House has already passed the companion bill, but the Senate bill will die soon if it is not moved immediately to the Senate floor for a vote. Citizens can call Senator Bill Frist at 202-224-3135 to urge him to bring the bill to the floor for a vote without markup or amendment. They can also call their own senators and ask that they co-sponsor the bill.

Here is some in formation on horse slaughter in the United States:

Decades ago, Americans were outraged to learn that horsemeat was an ingredient in pet food. Ultimately, this use of horsemeat was banned due to public outcry.

Now, three foreign-owned companies on American soil are slaughtering 90,000 American horses annually, and sending the horsemeat to Europe and Asia for human consumption. Several of the foreign countries that still serve horsemeat do not allow horse slaughter on their own soil, which is why they turn to the United States. I believe that the only reason we still allow it in our country is that many Americans are not aware this repugnant practice is occurring here. However, that is changing, due to a grassroots movement to make people aware that the American horse -- an icon of American history and a trusting, hardworking companion -- is at risk.

Ninety-two percent of the horses slaughtered in this country are young and in good health, and include former racehorses and recreational horses.

Estimates are that 50,000 American horses are stolen from their owners annually, and most of these are sold to slaughterhouses as food.

Other horses are sold in good faith by their owners at auction. The owners believe that their horses are being placed in good homes, whereas in fact they are being purchased by slaughterhouse agents.

Still other horses are "retired" Premarin mares. These are mares that, during their working life, are kept constantly pregnant so that their urine can be harvested for the menopause drug Premarin. When their useful life is over, the mares are sold into slaughter. Not incidentally, the successive foals that the mares are forced to bear are also slaughtered for food.

Unlike cattle, sheep, and pigs, most horses in the United States are not raised as "livestock"; they have known and trusted humans on a one-to-one basis. They are torn away from secure surroundings and transported in horrifi c conditions in which horses are often gravely injured due to overcrowding and panic. The slaughter itself is often painful and terrifying, despite ostensible safeguards.

What would happen to the 90,000 horses that are slaughtered each year, if the American slaughterhouses did not exist?

First of all, those numbers would drop, because tens of thousands of horses would no longer be stolen and sold into slaughter. Those horses would remain with their rightful owners, and drop out of the statistics. (In California, horse theft dropped dramatically after horse slaughter was banned.)

The five to ten thousand horses that are imported for slaughter from Canada and Mexico would no longer be sent across the borders into the United States. These horses would also drop out of the statistics.

Of the remaining number, the healthy horses would be purchased at auction by individuals or by horse rescue services, rather than by slaughterhouse agents. (The horse rescu ers who are in the best position to provide information on how many horses they can place are banned by law from lobbying on this issue, so their input is unavailable to Congress unless the legislators seek it out.)

Those horses that are legitimately at the end of their lives -- again, estimated to be only 8% of the original figure of 90,000 horses slaughtered per year -- would be humanely euthanized. (Each year, 900,000 American horses already meet a natural or accidental death, or are humanely euthanized; so the additional numbers of euthanized horses would not create the disposal problem that is frequently cited as a concern by slaughter proponents.)

The American public overwhelmingly disapproves of horse slaughter. This will become increasingly apparent as the grassroots movement to publicize this national travesty takes hold. A year's delay would mean another 90,000 horses killed; and once Americans learned of this assault upon their beloved icon, they would be doubly outraged to find that the Senate had the opportunity to stop the slaughter this year, and let it slip by.

    Alex

I would like to post the letter I sent to each Fox reporter in St. Louis, to get them to cover the wider implications of the slaughter horse trailer accident, but my post is being bounced. ("Held" -- but those tend never to go through.)

This letter worked, so I would like to share it.

Maybe it is considered too long by the site program.

Could you check into this, as it is a problem that keeps coming up?

    Thanks!

DEBBIE L.A. I send the email of Salvation too our senators. Do you think they will open it?

And I live in Baldwin County Alabama where the Pony was dragged. He is up for adoption.

Let's don't forget to pray for him and for all the ones fighting for their lives in Missouri...and for all of the ones being moved toward Kaufman, etc.

Yea Stewart! The fans of Barbaro are making a difference. This horse is a miracle. not only in his healing but the ability he has to bring people together for a great cause. All his fellow brothers who arent so lucky to have owners that love him, they have us! Jen

Posted by: Jen at September 27, 2006 5:45 PM

Hi Alex! I am literally worried about Barbaro and the fact that he has been confined for so long and it seems that this will be quite awhile longer. A horse with his energy and spirit and having been bred to run like the wind I would think could only handle so much of this type of confinement. I do understand why the confinement is necessary, but it absolutely breaks my heart to see the latest pictures from espn knowing that this beautiful champion would like nothing more than to run in the hills of Pennsylvania as he once was able to do or atleast to some reasonable extent given his prognosis. Mrs. Jackson and the writer of the article posted today both indicated that Barbaro's attitude is unpredictable from day to day and it seems he is nipping at people a bit more than in the past and getting "upset" more in his stall. Your thoughts about all this would be appreciated.

While I have to admit this is a stupid and disgusting marketing ploy, I find it fascinating that PETA is rallying for cockroaches but has NOTHING about horse slaughter to be found on their website. Found this story on the St. Louis Fox News link posted earlier. The PETA crowd has some amazing priorities:

PETA Upset At Six Flags Roach-Eating Contest Last Edited:
    Created:
GURNEE, Ill. (AP) -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants Six Flags Great America to scrap its Halloween-themed cockroach-eating promotion.

A spokeswoman for the animal rights organization says the contest at the amusement park's FrightFest is, quote, "gratuitously cruel."

The Gurnee park says anyone who eats a live Madagascar hissing cockroach will be rewarded with unlimited line-jumping privileges. The bugs are up to three-inches long and the contest begins October seventh.

The park is also holding a cooked roach eating contest on Friday, October 13th.

Amusement park officials are defending their menu choice.

Great America spokesman Jim Taylor says the bugs are nutritious, high in protein and fat free.

Turned to the sports section in our local newspaper this morning, [I live 35 miles from the Mississippi River near Vicksburg, MS.][There are several river boats that have very reasonable
    seafood platters available.]
The article was on how well Barbaro is doing, and he again looks likes the magnificent champion that he once was. It stated in the article that his outsde grazing time has been extended to 30 to 40 minutes a day, up from 15 to 20 minutes a day.Just got thru downloading some magnificent pictures of Barbaro, from Tim Wooley's site taken, yesterday. The pictures bring to mind some advice that Barbaro's father, Dynaformer, gave him recently when he said, "Son I think you'll really enjoy this retirement thing".
Frankly, I've enjoyed this "nickering thing", more than racing.
    Love your Dad, Dynaformer

Marilyn- these horses in St. louis have just become our silent messangers. Fox just did GREAT STORY on the accident. the reporter said she was horrified to find out where these horses were going and went into detail how they were going to foreign lands. They said the Humane society was going to try to keep them from their owners but it would take a lot of help. Jen

I was just looking at Senator Coryn's website to get an idea of just who we are dealing with here. To start with there is a picture of our dear Senator on the upper left corner and on the right corner is a picture of a cowboy on a horse!!!!! Then I see dated September 27, 2006..CORYN CONDEMS OBSTRUCTION OF TERRORIST SURVEILLANCE BILL..."HE blaming the Democrates for invoking a obstructionist procedure which prevented consideration of this bill"!!!!! JUST WHAT DOES HE THINK HE IS DOING TO S1915 by putting a HOLD on it????

    Believe in Barbaro

I too contacted the abc affiliate about Senator Frist's non-action which is in fact aquiescence in the brutal slaughter that is ongoing. Every call I make to his office gives me just more incentive to fight harder and tougher. Would prefer not to use harsh words, but then again he has left me no choice.

Thanks to Jen and many others for providing the info and number to donate to the Missouri Humane Society for the horses in the accident this morning. I just donated -- the nice young lady I spoke with asked if I was a Fan of Barbaro as soon as I told her I was calling from Maryland, so I know many more of you are doing the same -- hopefully we can keep these precious few from being returned to their "owner" or being delivered to the slaughterhouse.

Thanks always to our Leader, Barbaro, and all his family & friends! I think that covers everyone here!

    FOX AFFILIATES

On the FOX news affiliate sites, go to the red "People" tab. St. Louis had email addresses for each reporter there.

My local affiliate does not; but some may.

This is how I emailed each reporter to ask them all to look at the broader implications of the horse trailer accident, and sent them info about horse slaughter.

If everyone can check their local FOX websites now and, if possible, ask each reporter to pick up this story, cover the horse slaughter bill issues, etc., -- that would be great.

I have been trying to send you all my letter so you can use it; but the site will not accept it for some reason.

    I will try again.

    http://www.myfoxstl.com/myfox/pages/Traffic/Detail?contentId=1018296&version=9&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=10.3.1

Here is some information on horse slaughter in the United States:

They are torn away from secure surroundings and transported in horrific conditions in which horses are often gravely injured due to overcrowding and panic.

(The horse rescuers who are in the best position to provide information on how many horses they can place are banned by law from lobbying on this issue, so their input is unavailable to Congress unless the legislators seek it out.)

PETA has NO credibility WHATSOEVER, and we NEVER want to be mentioned in the same sentence with them. That would retard our progess immenseley..I can't say that strongly enough. I understand, you were just reporting their latest off the track venue, but I am just reminding us, PETA is not helpful in any valid way in the fight for animal rights. Frankly, I think they have been so blatant about what they DON'T DO, that itis common knowledge by now. Just in case, though, I have said it again!

I just got off the phone with James at the Cavel Slaughterhouse in IL ((815) 756-8051).

I asked how long the horses were kept prior to being slaughtered. He told me they kill them within 2-3 hours.

I asked what type of testing is done to prevent tainted meat from entering the food supply. He told me that 'the USDA does the testing'. I asked him how that was possible since the USDA is federally funded and the funding stopped last year. He said they 'still follow the USDA guidelines'. He couldn't tell me how many horses were tested each day (therefore, none) or what specifically the guidelines are.

Get this, he told me that they 'watch for symptoms'. I asked how it was possible to observe hundreds of horses each day, when they only have them for 2 - 3 hours? He again referred to USDA guidelines. I informed him that bute, de-wormers and banamine do not have 'symptoms' to watch for and that these drugs are clearly labeled 'not for use in food animals'. I also told him that many other medications require a 30 day holding period for the meds to leave the horses system. Yet again, he referred to USDA guidelines.

He also told me that they 'don't get racehorses' because the racehorses are sold to the Amish (yeah, I want to see an off the track TB pulling a cart at 30 + MPH, must be fun to watch). He then stated that most of the horses come from the Amish. So, apparently the ratio between equine and human in the Amish population is something like 10,000 to one. I don't think so. He then backtracked and said the horses come from auctions and are brought in by the same buyers.

I also asked what the facility does to ensure that stolen horses are not slaughtered and if they trace brands or scan for micro chips. I was told that they only rely on police reports to locate stolen horses. He said that they don't 'have the technology' to scan for micro chips. So, this company rakes in millions every year, doesn't pay taxes and still can't afford $250 for a universal scanner??

So much for a 'regulated industry'!!

Now that I'm fired up again, it's time to call Frist (again).

Joyce- that is very interesting that he said that about the amish. It is true that they are down right cruel to horses. NOt all but most. they will beat the spirit out of theses horses in a minute. But these people do not haul horses. If they go anywhere it has to be by someone who drives. Those people dont give medications, hell they hardly feed them. But he is a liar. Jen

    Hah!

I broke the email code for the FOX news reporters.

If your FOX affiliate does not list email addresses, just make them up as follows:

firstlastname @ fox stationnumber callletters .com

So, John Auble in St. Louis is

    johnauble@fox2ktvi.com

St. Louis actually has links to email for the individual reports, so you can find John Auble's address online; but some stations do not provide this info.

You can probably just use the name of any Fox reporter, plus my formula, to generate an email address.

This worked with my affiliate, which did not post email addresses of reporters. My group email to all of them went through perfectly.

Go to your FOX affiliate's website and click on the red "People" tab to find all the names of the reporters.

    Go, team!

Alex, thanks for the articles by JE and the Bobby photos. I think we all needed cheering this morning; I know that I've been distracted and tearful this morning thinking of the horses in the MO trailer accident...that's my backyard, so to speak; I know that highway very well... those poor horses...but maybe we can all get the ban passed and save the survivors.

    DEEP breath

Loved Jeannie's story about the Tin Man in particular! 3 years out of commission but HE wasn't sold off, and now look at him! A champ and a beloved barn pet.

The pictures of Bobby are gorgeous. He has fire in his eyes. The one with Dr. Dean throwing back his head, with that broad grin, is priceless and says it all.

    AND we have another co-sponsor!!
    Back to work...

Be patient, Dear One. Don't loose that light shining through the windows of your soul. Some of us, here, have loved ones, or are even fighting infirmity, ourselves. You are OUR inspriation. Because of you, we here, are not alone.

Keep the vision of blue skies, soft sweet pastures, and the sights, smells, and sounds of other horses before your mind's eye.

Listen to our heart-whispers, as we send love and strength to you. Don't give up...stay the course. You have never been defeated.

Thinking of you A LOT today...resting a bit (like you): pacing myself, gathering strength, so-to continue. The race is loooong. The long ones are won not by speed, but by Heart.

You have great Heart, Dear Barbaro...and you also have mine.

Thanks for your letter. You've been a tremendous help in directing us in how to contact our affiliates.

Friar Tuck sums it up in earlier post

    Cheers,
    Friar Tuck

This is where we should be directing our energies along with the phone calls. This opportunity, although tragic, has been dropped into our laps.

    D'Anne:

There are a couple of posters who overreact pretty regularly. As far as I have been told, nipping is a good thing - he is full of himself. Never heard about "overanxiousness" and I have read ALL the news articles. It's a bad thing if he does not respond to people or food or lays down and does not want to get up. So far he is showing the same fighting spirit he has always had - and more!

I emailed the national Fox News at fox news channel.com , then went to extreme bottom of page , clicked contact us, then on second page roll down until see newstip or contact box on left. I then just filled in about the wreck and horses without being too long( didn't know how many charaters it
would take ) Might not help but it adds another voice to the drumbeat.
    I called today Sen. Burr 202 224 3154
    Sen. Dole 202 224 6342
    Sen. Frist 202 224 3135 twice so
    far
    Sen. Stevens 202 224 3004
Called Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson in
Ga., called off the Senators list on Senate.gov and didn't write their numbers down. Called both Alabama Senators also, off same list where you can check for name or state. Didn't write their names down either. I use the senate .gov site and call
when I recognize a name not on the sponsers list.
I called also that abc affiliate in Tenn. of the
earlier post today. Ask to speak to one of the
producers and he told me that itis common in Tenn. for the Senators ,once elected , not to call back.
This might seem haphazard to you, and I guess
I should write more lists , but I prefer to call
from the website . Oh yes , tried to reach the mayor of Kaufman twice today because I would like to give her phone number to Dan Woodley at Sen. Burr's office. He is the animal welfare aid I have spoken to there. I would really like help with

Good news everyone and Patty in Dallas

The assignment desk man at KFAA channel 8,here in Dallas really listened to me !!!! Started out with the reason we are on the TWR site, then told him about Mrs. Jackson's request of us and the responsibility she felt being the owner of a Derby winner, our mission, Senator John Cornyn stalling the bill, the hurry up need and the slaughter truck wreck in Mo. He made very informed comments along the way as in an understanding way and it was so great. He said that they had done things on the anti-slaughter before and that he would look into it now. I gave him Mayor Paula Bacons name and number and he also took my name and number. I felt like I was talking to someone that understood where I was coming from.

First up beat thing I have encountered! It really helps.

I forgot to mention I also called Sen Vitter (LA ) and talked to an aide that wasn't the animal welfare person, but the only one I could reach. He was pro-horse ( he said ) and really listened at least, and promised to tell the Senator my views although I am not a constituent, since it is a national issue.

I also sent an email and a web site to the horse wreck story to a sports writer here inthe Charlotte observer. Tom Sorenson. I already sent a letter and
literature to Tommy Tomlinson , the best writer at that paper. But he hasn't responded.

    Hey guys...
Just when you think all of the best pictures of Barbaro have been taken....Alex comes through, once again (and no, his vet doesn't look bad either)...It's hard to pick a favorite...It is so good to see Dr. Dean looking relaxed and Bobby looking feisty...I also got a charge outta Bobby taking a nip out of the guys trousers...(apologies to the guy, but we think this is Barbaro being cute)...

The thought of saying a final farewell to The Fog is giving me a lump in my throat, but it is something that we must endure...and all those feelings of sadness well-up again...I will try to remember him as he should be... a Champion in every sense of the word...so worthy of our respect and our love...so dearly missed.

Posted by: Pamela at September 27, 2006 10:10 PM

Barbaro has always been a nipper - hense the name the Chipper Nipper - if he stopped then it would be time to get worried. Since he is still at it - thats a good sign. I think its more of a play thing that a hurt thing. He wants the attention and if he's not getting it WHEN he wants - a little nip to remind everyone who is the greatest of them all!!! I wouldn't mind a nip from the Chipper Nipper!!!

I'm sure some days he is more bored than usual and he nips more than usual - probably trying to say TAKE ME OUT FOR A WALK AND A GRAZE. I'm tired of being in this stall!! I would say normal for a 3 year old colt!!

    Just my opinion!

Can someone re-post the bogus reasons Senator Cornyn lists for leading the opposition to S.1915. I saw them on this site yesterday but cannot find where they might be archived.

Also, are there any statistics on how many rescue organizations across the country are willing to take how many horses otherwise bound for slaughter in the next year? Is someone maintaining a list? One of the main arguments to continue slaughter is that no-one will take them and they will starve, etc., so therefore slaughter is somehow humane. It would shut that argument down to be able to say yes, x number of organizations are willing to take x number of horses right now.

Thank you and I applaud your efforts.

Hey Sally...That was actually a tongue-in-cheek kinda thingy...But here is something to think about...

How do you know that Barbaro wasn't trying to steal the guys wallet? Could the boredom drive him to a life of crime? I don't think his buddy Dr. Dean would allow that...hehehe

Keep up that good work each and every day, enjoy the fresh air and sunshine on your outings with Dr. R, and keep that most handsome chin up. You are still my inspiration and I think of you always. Hi D'Anne!
The interview and article with Mrs. Jackson was in the Sunday Philadelphia Inquirer Sports section. She did not write the article. I would imagine you could go online and find it there. I haven't read all the postings on this site today so someone may have already told you this.
Linda H. in Denver - I have to say I was miffed by your comment regarding some regular posters over reacting on a regular basis on the sight. Did I take it personally? Yes, I did. That may be my problem, but so be it. What I really want to say is if posters cannot express their concerns and ask questions on the site without being criticized or ridiculed then I would say that this is not the sight that the friends of Barbaro would think it is or want it to be. Not everyone is "horse knowledgeable". Sometimes a question or comment or observation creates concern and that concern can be allayed by asking. I still have the concerns I wrote about in my email and to pick one - the knipping - to comment on, which is the least of my concerns seems well....
Thanks Sally for your information. I didn't even know about the nickname for Barbaro.
Otherlyn, what a beautiful message. It says it all and does so well. Blessings to you and all you speak of in your message.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years

Loved the new "Bobby" photos. I needed new wallpaper, so now I have Barbaro and Dr. Dean every time I turn on the computer. Actually it replaces another Barbaro photo. I even have it at work.

So tragic about the wreck and the horses who lost their lives but as everyone else said - they were going to their death and this at least brought media attention to the issue.

I gather others are having trouble getting through to Frist - his mailbox is full. Made calls and faxes to other senators on the list. I'm really upset with Martinez - supposedly a supporter but not co-sponsor.I've been faxing every day and calling when I can.

Can somebody please give me some back history on the current legal status of horse slaughter, with research links?

    My specific questions are:

I have read in the Comments that there are aspects of horse slaughter that are already illegal, but that S. 1915 will close loopholes so that the slaughterhouses will really have to stop this time. In what way is horse slaughter currently illegal, or what aspects of it are illegal? Under federal law? Which statutes?

I have also read that there is something up with the inspection -- that it is illegal for USDA inspectors to inspect the meat? Is that right? Under what statute? And that the inspectors are being paid directly by the slaughterhouses, to circumvent this?

Also, does anyone know which ports are used for the export of horsemeat to Europe? to Asia?

If anyone can give me explanations or, better still, research links to specific pages that answer any of these questions, I would be very grateful.

    Thanks!

I see we lost two horses in the past 24 hours. One was to a tumor similar to LITF I suppose. I hope he didn't suffer. But it seemed like he was in a good place with people to look after him that put his needs first.

And while some may blast me for this--that other horse that was put down; it just shows how lucky Barbaro is. All the right people and treatments available to him were near enough to be effective. Of course sadly that other horse had been through quite a number of medical experiences. So maybe enough was enough. I know not many would agree.

And seeing as how I don't usually read the comments section anymore--you can blast me all you want. I guess I believe that a doctor administering that overdose--if its a real reason (and not just some selfish--I don't want to be bothered anymore)is humane. When is enough enough? To me, its a personal question. And one that any reasonable animal owner needs to ask themselves as well as the animal.

LITF's trainer said that Fog would tell him when it was time. That to me was reasonable.

Well Barbaro my time is nearly up. Great photos of you. I'm glad you're not looking to fat yet. With you unable to "work out" I don't want you gaining too much weight.

Your eyes seemed so clear and alert. And those ears are all pricked just listening for our voices on the wind I guess!

So you get a good nights sleep. I will check on you tomorrow. Comfy dreams and rest.

Alex if you get a chance can you ask Jeannine where she was in WY? I have family there and it would be interesting to see if she was near them...Thanks. And I still think your the greatest ever.

Jen

Composting horses instead of slaughtering them?

The "fine" vets at Texas A&M, who provided testimony before Congress *against* the Anti-Slaughter bill, now see horse composting as a potential response if the bill becomes law.

Sorry to respectfully disagree, but why FOX? They are the WORST network when it comes to humanity for either humans or animals. That's an uphill battle right there.

Check this out. It's the local NBC affiliate's "picture of the day". I wish they would include that the injured horse that is looking so wistfully at his rescuer was ON THE WAY TO BE KILLED!!!!

    Makes me hopping mad.

Posted by: Sheila at September 28, 2006 12:18 AM

    Linnie,

Each Fox affiliate must be different. Our local station in Dallas is always running stories very synpathic to animals and their plight. They always end their stories with, If you would like to help, please...........

Posted by: Patty in Dallas at September 28, 2006 12:25 AM

Have gotten a second wind tonight and sent the following to our local St. Louis NBC affiliate:

    To KSDK,

I was moved by the picture today of the rescuer petting the injured horse that was rescued after the horrific Hwy 44 accident. I am appalled that this horse, along with the others, was bound for a Northern Illinois slaughterhouse.

I am a member of the “Friends of Barbaro”, a group of concerned citizens across the country that have been following the progress of the Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro since his injury in May. Initially coming together to follow the recovery of this great horse, our common cause has morphed into more – a desire to see the end of legalized slaughter of these beautiful animals whose carcasses are shipped overseas and fed to foreign people.

I hope that this awful accident generates media attention to this issue. The Anti-Slaughter Bill, S1915, is currently stuck in a senate committee after being passed by the House of Representatives earlier this legislative session. With the recess beginning next Friday, our hope that the slaughter of these animals will come to a legal end soon is fading.

The Friends of Barbaro’s greatest weakness is that we don’t have the political clout to encourage our Senators to move this bill to the floor, despite evidence that illustrates that a great majority of the American people condemn the slaughter of horses. We don’t have celebrity. We don’t have money. We are hoping to find someone who can help us spread the news that this practice goes on in our country to apply political pressure to our legislators to end it for good. Can you help?

Approximately 90,000 horses are killed by these slaughterhouses each year specifically for the purpose of sending their meat overseas. Horses represent an important symbol to our great country, and to allow this practice to continue in light of their national legacy is appalling.

Check out timwoolleyracing.com, the forum that we’ve used since May to organize our grass roots efforts in this area. Spread the word to the St. Louis public. Don’t let these poor horse’s suffering on Hwy 44 mean nothing. Look at your picture of the day. This practice has to stop.

    Thank you for your consideration.

I forgot to mention that I contacted the author of the "Barbaro" article in the Orlando Sentinel (in which he talks about the Barbaro Maniacs). I had mentioned to him that it would have been nice to have included some information about the slaughterhouse issue. I was surprised that he answered me. He said the newspaper ran an 2 articles a few years ago. Well, I emailed him again today and suggested that they use the wreck in Missouri as a way of leading into the slaughterhouse issue. I asked that he present the idea to his editor.

I agree with you about FOX. But in the same way that we contacted all NBC affiliates because one affiliate had footage of Salvation, we are contacting FOX affiliates because they can get hold of their sister station's footage.

FOX near St. Louis started giving great coverage after we all sent them tons of info about horse slaughter so that they could tie that into that story. The reporter apparently had not known about the slaughter of horses for human consumption until this.

See Jen's post at 4:45, after we blitzed them with info.

So...we are using FOX. I have sent my best summaries to every single reporter at several stations; if nothing else, they are now definitely aware of the issue!

God bless Precisionist and Second of June..take good care of them Lord, help them find Foggy.

God bless all our innocent horses who suffer, especially all involved in the accident today. Take care of all of them, whether they are with You or still with us. For those who lost their lives, thank you for letting them cross the Bridge with humane dignity instead of at the murder factory.

    See you in the morning.

Time to tuck you in babycakes, fluff your bedding, turn on your night lite, whisper a lullabye in your ear. I'll be checking on you in the morning. Hugs and smoochies!

###My heart aches for the horses who are being put through this torturous death..my heart aches for all animals who, through the cruelty of humans, die unnecessary deaths....my heart aches for a mama cat and her 5 kittens who will die if they aren't rescued soon...I am so sad right now I just can't see thru the tears.

Here is my letter to Senator Ensign (the original sponsor of S. 1915) about this vicious idea in the article mentioned by Lily at 12:10:

    ******

    Slaughtering horses for compost???!!!

    Dear Senator Ensign,

Have you seen this terrible idea out of Texas A & M?

    http://agnews.tamu.edu/dailynews/stories/AGEN/Sep2706a.htm

In anticipation of the passage of the Horse Protection Act amendment, Texas A & M is coming up with a new use for the slaughterhouses -- composting all the horses they would otherwise have killed for human consumption. In other words, they are assuming that the same number of horses will die in the same slaughterhouses -- just for a different purpose!

The article appears to be based upon the presumption that the 90,000 horses that are currently slaughtered annually, would still need to be destroyed if S.1915 is enacted into law. This is not the case.

As you know, ninety-two percent of the horses slaughtered in this country are young and in good health, and include former racehorses and recreational horses.

Estimates are that 50,000 American horses are stolen from their owners annually, and most of these are sold to slaughterhouses as food.

Five thousand horses are imported for slaughter, from Canada and Mexico.

Other horses are sold in good faith by their owners at auction. The owners believe that their horses are being placed in good homes, whereas in fact they are being purchased by slaughterhouse agents.

The horses that are imported from Canada and Mexico would no longer be sent across the borders into the United States. These horses would also drop out of the statistics.

Of the remaining number, the healthy horses would be purchased at auction by individuals or by horse rescue services, rather than by slaughterhouse agents. (The horse rescuers who are in the best position to provide information on how many horses they can place are banned by law from lobbying on this issue, so their input is unavailable to Congress unless the legislators seek it out.)

Those horses that are legitimately at the end of their lives -- again, estimated to be only 8% of the original figure of 90,000 horses slaughtered per year -- would be humanely euthanized. (As you know, each year, 900,000 American horses already meet a natural or accidental death, or are humanely euthanized; so the additional numbers of euthanized horses would not create the disposal problem that is frequently cited as a concern by slaughter proponents.)

I know that creating a new industry to encourage additional horse thievery, the importation of additional horses for slaughter, and the additional purchasing of otherwise marketable horses at auction by slaughterhouse agents, can hardly have been your intent in sponsoring S. 1915 to amend the Horse Protection Act.

I hope that you can make your views on this issue known to the people at A & M.

    Thank you --

    #### Alex, thanks for your continued work to stabilize the electronic lifeline for all of us.

To Steve - Glad to hear of BDude's continued rally.

Great to hear that Zeke is improving and good wishes to Toby.

I need to sign off now. The death of that poor horse in AL really sickened me. Perhaps some FOBs there will try to find a sympathetic State rep or senator to sponsore some legislation to strengthen penalities for killing horses. It is well-documented in the clinical literature (ie, that studies the progression of domestic violence) that frequently those who will kill a loved one start much earlier by torturing or killing animals. Perhaps someone in AL who is sympathetic to animal rights could approach the advocacy community that works to combat domestic violence. Peace to you all as you do your part to stop this disrespect of equine life. ####

One day at a time, Barbaro.

Talked at length to a girl at the Humane Society when I called to make my donation to the precious horses who were rescued. I believe there are NO mistakes, as in the accident. She did not know slaughter houses existed. Very disgusted with animal issues in her state as is verified by our list. Exposure is the key - people don't know about this horrible injustice to unknown heroes. Thank God they did not endure the slaughter house.

Have informed various chamber of commerce's about boycotting their states - all are surprised, supportive and refer me to someone higher up who I also talk to. Senators' offices in Illinois and Texas have silence when I mention boycott.

God bless Second of June (hard luck horse his whole career) and Precisionist.

Mentioned on discussion is an amber alert-clearing house for horses and owners who are desperate to sell. We could save so many more horses if the horse rescue organizations did not have to outbid the horrible "killer buyers." Just a thought because even if the bill passes, they are on a rampage to kill as many as possible until they are closed for good. We can probably put them out of business faster than the senate can.

Love you Barbaro and wish every horse had loving owners like you and Foggy. All should learn from their example.

MARILYN/CA/Can somebody please give me some back history on the current legal status of horse slaughter, with research links?

    Thanks!

I found this re a hold on a bill and have a question.

According to the Senate’s official site, a hold is:

“An informal practice by which a Senator informs his or her floor leader that he or she does not wish a particular bill or other measure to reach the floor for consideration. The Majority Leader need not follow the Senator’s wishes, but is on notice that the opposing Senator may filibuster any motion to proceed to consider the measure.”

News to me that Frist could actually override the holds. I saw Frist on the news this evening saying he didn't want to bring up some other bill because the Democrats would filibuster it. It takes 60 votes to break a filibuster so even if the nays on S1915 filibustered, aren't there enough votes to break it. Someone posted there are 27 co-sponsors and 43 (I'm assuming that is in addition to the 27) for the bill. Is this a tack we could take with Senator Frist? I'm getting worried that bombarding him continually will just tee him off and he'll dig in.

I know it's late so if I don't get an answer tonite, please bear with me because I may post this tomorrow, too.

Thanks to all of you for your humor, your dedication to horses, your ideas, your persistence.

So the pony in Alabama died. May he rest in peace and haunt his killer. I'm hoping for "Les Miserables" here, only ramped up.

Sheila, thanks for the addy on Jennifer Blome. I emailed Mike Owens two weeks ago and he called me--and was very dismissive. Said it sounded like the rescue groups were just trying to push their agenda (yes, Mike, it's called life. There's always at least two sides...). I had emailed him because of his piece in June on track fatalities.

I'm going to email J. Blome now and copy Owens and see if they'll act.

Good night, Barbaro Nation. It really has been a rough week, hasn't it? We have all done some great work and I'm so proud I'm in tears every time I think of the Barbaro Fans pouring in donations from all over the country to our poor accident victims today.

    Susan E....

I am concerned (ok worried) about the agenda for the Administration in the Senate...I think they are going to push the anti-terrorism thingy to the hilt in a run-up to the election...

We will still hit 'em hard, but I see Frist bringing anything to do with Terrorism to the floor for a vote...It is the only campaign issue that seems to register with their base...

I wish they weren't so predictable...hope I am wrong...I still believe the squeeky wheel gets the oil, but this looks like a Karl Rove production and he isn't flexible...

    Hi Everyone
It's late and I'm writing this during a commercial. Barbara Walter's interview of Terry Irwin is on. Fitting somehow. It's been a day.

Tragedies in all areas. The horses in the trailer, the precious little pony, and this afternoon, another horrific shooting at a high school here. I'm really spent, so I think I'm just going to listen to Mrs. Erwin share her amazing life with Steve, and reflect on what is beautiful and real in this world. People really do love each other, and people really do love animals and care for them, even to the extent of sacrificing one's life. God is good, God answers prayers, I have my loved ones, my career, my friends, all of you here, and tomorrow I'll start campaigning with a fresh outlook.

    #####

Pamela..thanks..The look on our boy's face, those incredible eyes sent me in to paroxyms of laughter, in spite of everything. It was just what I needed

Love to all, especially you, Little Mr. BJ, prayers for all who need them, Fog will remain in my heart forever as will the little pony and the precious horses who lost their lives today, Precisionist and Second of June, and as upset as I am that the horses bound for slaughter lost their lives, at least they didn't have to endure that final indignity and horror, and their survivors will be loved and live in the comfort they deserve

USDA Moves to Thwart Federal Law
Public Comments Needed to Encourage Democratic Process

    February 8, 2006

    Dear Humanitarian:

With the help of constituents like you, we convinced Congress to pass an
amendment to the 2006 Agriculture Appropriations Bill that prohibits
your tax dollars from being used to fund the federally mandated
inspection of horses slaughtered for human consumption-thereby
protecting America's horses from slaughter. The measure was
overwhelmingly approved in both the House of Representatives and the
Senate, and it was made official on Nov. 10, 2005 when the President
    signed the bill into law.

However, the horse slaughter industry refuses to give up-and the ban on
horse slaughter is at risk as a result. They have found an ally in the
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) who is willing to manipulate a
very clear federal law to allow the foreign-owned slaughterhouses to
    continue operating.

The USDA has issued regulations approving a petition submitted
surreptitiously by the three foreign-owned horse slaughterhouses in the
United States that would enable the horse slaughter industry to fund its
own inspections. This crooked plot will allow the slaughter of tens of
thousands of horses for human consumption in 2006-circumventing
Congressional intent and flying in the face of the will of the American
    people.

    WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Please send comments via mail, email or the USDA website before March 9,
urging the USDA to withdraw the regulations that would allow the horse
slaughterhouses to keep operating. It is very important that the agency
hears from as many concerned Americans as possible.

Here are some issues you should include in your letter:

    1.
The USDA should not be considering any proposal that will allow
the slaughterhouses to continue operating. Such an action is a clear
violation of Congressional intent and federal law.
    2.
President Bush signed into law the 2006 Agriculture
Appropriations bill, which Congress amended to prohibit horse slaughter
by removing funds required to inspect horses intended for slaughter.
This was NOT simply a way to alter how inspections are funded.

Additionally, please write your Members of Congress to urge their
support of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, H.R. 503 and S.
1915, if you have not already done so. A permanent ban on horse

I haven't come anywhere near to reading all the post. So sorry to her about Perfectionist and
second of June ( I which they would have tried to save him).

Bad as the accident with the horses sounds, it could really work for the good. Just spreading the word about this horrid business, and the survivors hsve snother chance. I pray their reprieve will be permanent.

When my son handed out the flyers in Austin, he said a lot of people were already aware and upset about the existence of the slaughter houses.

    Bobby

It is 10:45pm I have been trying to get here since this afternoon OMG!! FINALLY-no more "BARBALEXWOOLLITIS SYNDROME" You guys, the Terri Irwin interview was so sad! I was already crying because my pet wild turkey died today at my boyfriends house. I am so sad. The pony is gone, the horses hurt on overturned truck in MO are gone, Precisionist is gone, Steve Irwin is gone, Oh it is truly a stinging eye month all the way around. The only thing making it better is the fact that our boy Bobby is getting better, and stronger every day, and looks quite the handsome Big Ole Boy of Old!! Couple this with Mike Rea's progress, and it makes me cry for joy--sting a little more eyeballs.

You guys/gals here are quite the force of nature. I know without you I would be somewhere in a bar with a bottle crying, talking about Barbaro, the Fog, and slaughterhouse cruelty, and my poor sweet dead wild turkey. Seriously--you laugh...I am so glad I got to express to ya'll. The daddy just ain't the sympathetic listner--AT ALL!! Man, we could all use a really big strong pitcher of Barbarotinis right about now, huh, Pammie?

Steve--How's Bdude hanging? I hope he don't eat all your Subway sandwich up tonight!! Feel frisky lil man (the cat folks-not daddy Steve) get your minds outta the gutter...LOL

Barbara Kerr & Dan-I hope all is well with the treatments. I pray for you to be strong and feel great soon.

Erin Brennan-I hope you are feeling better after going to the Dr. Don't forget to hug on your stuffed horse really tight!! love ya sweet girl

Mike Rea-Keep up the good work and healing dude!!

I never mind anyone use the things I write; it's why I post them; but the one about the icky composting idea is rather specific to that issue. Pieces of it would be useful, but probably not the whole thing.

I have previously posted the subtraction analysis, and I think that section of the letter has lots of uses.

It is hard to pick numbers for these things, though. Today I discovered that the 900,000 horses who die annually from accidents, euthanization, etc., shows up in some places as only 690,000...so I have changed that in my latest version. I always think it is best to use conservative numbers...

A more generally useful letter appears at 5:36 pm, above.

You are welcome to use anything I post that seems useful, but, again, make your own judgments about the numbers you use.

    Thanks!

Thank you so much! I will save all of that for my files. It helps me understand the current legislation much better.

Alex -- is there any way to find out about an older TB racehorse? I used to do equine massage and I had an incredible experience with a stakes winner from Philly Park by the name of Yogurt Man around 1993. I often wondered what happened to him -- he was an amazing animal, just like Barbaro and so many other wonderful animals gracing this site.

Good nite, Barbaro. Too tired to write much; just want you to know how much I admire you! Your courage has meant so much to so many of your "brothers and sisters". God Bless you, Big B. Talk to you tomorrow when I'm more awake. Sweet dreams, sweet Prince! I love you!
