Barbaro Updates: 87

updates are now here.

Update 734: Spoke to Peter Brette (6:20 pm) who had heard from Michael, who had visited Barbaro this afterenoon. All remains well, and Barbaro remains comfortable.

I attended a retirement party for Tom, who had worked on the maintenance crew at Fair Hill since its inception (or very close to it); basically 23 years. It was held in Chevation III, which is now the maintenance barn. In the old days it was a regular 40 horse stall barn. I used to gallop horses for Patti Miller from that barn. Anyway, it was a nice event. Nice comments from Sally Goswell (Fair Hill manager) and Dr. Fisher, who basically started Fair Hill, and hired Tom. They presented Tom with a gift, a Barbaro win picture of the Kentucky Derby, signed by Michael Matz. Tom will be missed. He always had a hello for you when jogging back and past where the tractors are parked, when they were preparing to begin the track renovation.

Update 733: Rachel, from Kennett Florist, has just provided this quick update (comment timestamp: 9:02pm):

Afternoon all!

All is well at NBC this afternoon. Quiet, but I was there for just a moment, dropping off some green tops, stud muffins and nickermakers... all of Barbaro's favorites!

WE BELIEVE!!

Update 732: I just spoke to Steve Willard, Giacomo's exercise rider. I wanted to get a quick update as I think he is pointing for a race next weekend (The Goodward). He said Giacomo is doing well. He had a nice breeze a few days ago, he jogged yesterday and was galloping today (jogging a mile and a quarter warm up, and then galloping a mile and a half). Steve said his mind could not be better, very good attitude, and really wants to go out and train. A good report from Giacomo.

Update 731: As we get ready for saturday's races on ESPN (update 725) I thought I would call Joe Deegan, Perfect Drift's exercise rider, to see how he was doing coming up to his race, the Kentucky Cup Classic. He told me Perfect Drift was training really well. He galloped well this morning, will gallop again tomorrow and then ship up on saturday to run. This will be his first race on the polytrack at Turfway, although he has worked on the track once. Joe said he worked well on the track, he quickened really well on it, and should handle the track well on saturday. I asked him about his last start in the Pacific Classic. He said that he came out of the race really well. He acted like he had not really run. He just really did not fire for the race, and perhaps the pace of the race did not suite him. (Relevant article: Perfect Drift to try something new in Kentucky Cup Classic).

Talking about the polytrack at Turfway Park, I spoke to my buddy Andy Durnin last night, he is working at Hollywood Park, where they have recently installed another synthetic surface (I forget its brand name). He said the track is really riding well in the mornings. They have not had any bad weather yet, to see how it handles rain (southern california), but thus far the horseman seem to be pretty happy with it.

Update 730: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (wednesday night). I saw Michael Matz ponying Peter as I was on my second set with Chappy. They were in deep conversation, but broke their dialogue to give me the news. Michael had heard from Dr. Richardson. Another nice morning at Fair Hill, although I think it might rain a little later.

Not related to Barbaro, but I had this chance meeting last thursday, pretty cool!

Update 729: Today's morning update will be a little later today, probably about 8:30 am. In the meantime Barbaro is starting to get invitations: "Barbaro did receive a wedding invitation a couple weeks ago.":

Barbaro did receive a wedding invitation a couple weeks ago. When I first opened it, his name was on the outside envelope and I thought, no this can't be. The wedding is in September and the girl had written a note saying she really hoped he could come but she would understand if he can't. We sent the reply card back saying he wouldn't be unable to attend because he didn't have a thing to wear and he wouldn't be able to dance. And Dr. Richardson happened to be over here and he saw it, so he signed a thank-you card and sent it to her. In his note, Barbaro wished them well in their marriage, but that he didn't plan to remain monogamous.

Nice work from Anna who was able to get some good news coverage: South Texas News Segment (video link) on the slaughter issues.

Good Morning Alex, Bobby and fellow "fans of Barbaro"

Thank you for letting us know about the delay of the morning update. We won't worry needlessly.

Anna - Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are incredible.

Fellow warriors - keep up the good fight. It will happen - I know it. These slaughterhouses WILL CLOSE FOREVER.

The wedding invitation caper is one of the funniest things I had read! It's a gorgeous day in Northern Virginia, great for a ride. We expect storms later, though.

Anna may the light of God enfold you! Thanks for all you do!

The article on the wedding invite is too funny! I can just see Bobby sitting in the front row with his front legs crossed and looking politely around and nipping the bridesmaid as she goes by him....:)
The rosary beads are a little hard for him too as he says he misses a lot of Hail Marys!!!!

Very powerful video Anna. Those sweet, loving horses saved. Everyone needs to see this.

It is especially telling when, at the end, the woman being interviewed says that it's not the ill, thin, horses that the killer buyers want....it's the healthy horses that bring the most money.....there goes yet another argument proponents of slaughter use.

Good Morning all..
I am praying that all the horses in MO are safe and no longer suffering. What a tragedy. Maybe some kind soul gave them a quiet place and a soft bed of hay to rest in last nite. Haven't had a chance to look at the link provided by Anna.

Been busy moving,(no internet for a few weeks)so I am really feeling out of the loop of all that has gone on...but so glad to be back.

Good morning everyone,
Went to our local Humane Society last night and dropped off about 100 of our flyers, they were really glad to get them. They are going to be posted and passed out to all.

Barbaro, I just mailed you a box of SPONGE BOB bandages, gray duct tape on a beautful hoof, does not make me happy. Tell Dr.R. to use them!

Good Morning, Fans of Barbaro!

Anna, I just posted an appreciation for your getting thru to the media....wonderful work. To all the people who are fighting so hard, you are showing all your compassion in action.

Didn't see my post from last night...but have contributed to the Missouri horses. This is what we have been waiting for - their story will galvanize and inform people about this horrendous practice. We can end this once and for all.

LITF, I feel you here and with all the newest horse angels. Maybe that is why you left this existence. Horses have knowledge that we humans do not - and a reason for doing things. I trust your wisdom, my Long Time Sun.

My heart breaks for that little darling in Alabama. He told me his horse name is Topaz.

I was getting some cat supplies yesterday and the woman at the register was discussing "horse stuff" with another friend of hers. She started talking about a rider who wants the horse sent to slaughter because of an error on the RIDER'S part. THe horse is trained for Western riding - rider is trained for English riding. SO the horse is confused and gets stressed.

Talk of an opening. I told her about S1915, TWR, Barbaro (of course) and then she asked for my Reiki card. I guess my mission is to inform people one person at a time.

All in all a very productive day.

Barbaro, I would love to see you dance at a wedding. That was so kind of Dr R. to write a response. The new pics of you and Dr. R are wonderful. Dr R. does love you and it shows in his relaxed demeanor. You two are best buds. As good as he is for you, you are soooooo good for him. You two are certainly enjoying this time. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Have a great day everybody.

Healing and Peace,
Lyn Gilbert

Tried to post earlier.

When I get up to see Barbaro, was hoping to meet you too!
And give you both hugs and kiss's. Sure it will be tears of joy.
This day will come! AND can't wait!
Oh happy days!
Thank you for all you do for us, if not for you we would not be here!
Praying together, and fighting together.

When I couldn't post it I thought, Alex don't want this old lady kissing on him. : )

For all Buckeyes for Barbaro, I received a canned response from Sen. Voinovich, so I need to call now. Sen. Mike DeWine is at least in support.

Good Morning Alex!

Thanks, Alex. Now I can start my day on the right note. So happy Barbaro had another comfortable night. I keep praying...

I could almost envision him walking down the aisle with pink and red roses, but I suppose he'd want a tux since he's so diginified :)
For someone to want him at their wedding just confirms - once again - how much he is loved.

Have a great day.

I was able to catch the winning performance of GEORGE WASHINGTON that Alex detailed in his updates a few days ago...It was on WIRE TO WIRE...The show is on ESPN and reviews the key races of the week...

My impression was that GEORGE was just wonderful...he was blocked in by several horses and appeared to wait patiently until he was able to slip through a very tight hole....Then off he went to victory...

I thought the Godolphin complaints were sour grapes...perhaps the result of wounded egos...

"not remaining monogamous" Why Barbaro---you sly Ole Dog You!! We always knew you was "Da Man" but to be "Da Man" to ALL fillies, is more than we could ask for, son!!!

That article was funny and nice to wake up to this morning. Yesterday was a yuck day. I do not know how many of the horses in MO had to be put down,(15?) It was and is still terrifying to think of. I try not to dwell on it, then think of that horrible man on tv that dragged and ultimately caused the death of that sweet little pony. I am still queasy. It is too early for those images in the brain. I will be back later on.

LOL!!! That is so cute for Barbaro to receive a wedding invitation. I know I would be honored to have him attend any event where I was. I hope some day Mr/Mrs Jackson will allow tours to visit Barbaro. I read that Mrs Jackson made a comment to the effect that he would have to reside at a place where everyone could see him because he didn't just belong to them any more, he belonged to a whole lot of people! What a celebrity he is! I love him SO much. I am going to be in Utah/Arizona for a week and don't know how I'll make it without my daily updates. I'll have Barbaro withdrawal!! I trust he will have ACN every night next week! Enjoy your grazing Big B. Hugs and kisses!

Good morning sweet Barbaro. It is truly yucky weather in Ohio, rain, cold, gloom. No problem for you though, if you can't get out to graze, the sweet fresh grass comes to you, courtesy of your loving mom. She is one terrific lady. Be a good patient and follow doctor's orders. Grow hoof grow. Butterfly kisses to you big guy!!

Thank you Alex for getting us up and running. I never knew I was such a creature of habit. I wake up, get OJ and cereal bar and go to TWR site. When one of them is missing, I become undone. You have us all spoiled Alex.

####
Prayers for Mike Rea's total recovery, for little Erin and for all the horses we lost these past few days.

Hi Socorro. Missed you yesterday.

Posted by: annie inTX at September 28, 2006 2:04 PM

This is a Bill that has left the Committee!

For Immediate Release
09/27/06

Senate Commerce Committee Approves Pool Safety Bill

S. 3718 would require manufacturers of drain covers to make and distribute only those drain covers that comply with anti-entrapment provisions of the national consensus standard. It would also encourage States to pass legislation that promotes the use of further layers of protection to increase awareness of effective precautionary pool and spa safety measures. Similarly, a second level of the legislation would authorize a federal grant program. Qualifying States which choose to accept federal funds would have to pass more comprehensive pool and spa safety legislation. If a state passes more comprehensive pool and spa safety legislation, federal funds would be available as part of a grant program to assist with enforcement and education within that state.

-------------------------------------

HEY! Summer is OVER!

They are wasting our Government money on drain covers safety?

Hi Sharri and Rosemary

Here is the response from Voinovich. He was just re-elected several years ago and I believe he has said he will not run again.

Thank you for contacting me. One of the most important aspects of my job is keeping informed about the views and activities of my constituents, and I genuinely appreciate hearing from you. Please feel free to contact me again regarding this or any other issue that may concern you.

Sincerely,

George V. Voinovich
United States Senator

I will keep trying.

No response for me from DeWine, but he is up for election. Just to cover all the bases, in case this goes to next year I also e-mailed Sherrod Brown, who is running against him.

###### If anyone wants to know- the official press release from the rescue group was e-mailed to me yesterday. I have forwarded to several people already. Channel 5 here in St. louis had a good segment. GREat JOb Marilyn. Jennifer Blome said she had tons of e-mails about the slaughter issue and she detailed the need to pass the bill. They also talked about what people need to do to help the unwanted horses. The cost of the rescue is over $10,000 so far. Help is needed badly. Jen

Bobbie B,

Kent was out but I did leave a voice mail. Tried to be as pursuasive as I could be (without being nasty) and also asked what I myself could do to get this moving. Of course I left my number, we'll see if he calls.

Had thought Senator Dole was with us, so this is kind of a shock. Please anyone who can call her office: 202-224-6342. Thanks.

Posted by: laura, nc at September 28, 2006 2:33 PM

I asked this last nite but no answer so I'm trying again today. Hope someone is on that can answer.

I saw Frist on the news last evening saying he didn't want to bring up a particular bill (other than S1915) because the Democrats would filibuster it. Laura NC mentioned that was said to her when she called.

It takes 60 votes to break a filibuster so even if the nays on S1915 filibustered, aren't there enough votes to break it? Someone posted there are 27 co-sponsors and 43 (I'm assuming that is in addition to the 27) for the bill. Is this a tack we could take with Senator Frist? I'm getting worried that bombarding him continually will just tee him off and he'll dig in. But I sure don't know how the man's mind works.

I had wondered exactly what a "hold" really was and found this.
According to the Senate’s official site, a hold is:

“An informal practice by which a Senator informs his or her floor leader that he or she does not wish a particular bill or other measure to reach the floor for consideration. The Majority Leader need not follow the Senator’s wishes, but is on notice that the opposing Senator may filibuster any motion to proceed to consider the measure.”

News to me that Frist could actually override the holds but maybe the rest of you knew that. But I guess that's why we're pushing him and trying for more co-sponsors. Sorry I'm just new at this and still trying to connect the dots.

Sam I Am

I think we're all learning the process but maybe this excerpt will help. It's not easy to end a fillabuster

"Ending debate in the Senate is often the most challenging aspect of the legislative process for the Senate's leadership. Short of voluntarily yielding the floor, an individual Senator can only be silenced through a formal procedure known as cloture. The process of cloture takes 3 calendar days and 60 votes to play out. It is easy to see why Majority Leaders prefer to reach a negotiated settlement with a Senator conducting a filibuster, the colloquial term used to describe an extended debate. The power to use a filibuster as a tool to gain negotiating leverage over both the policy agenda and legislative content again proves that individual Senators can, and do, act apart from their party and their leadership if they so wish."

Personal property rights

IMPORTANT

EVERY form of economic regulation is a "taking". The Senate (or any other legislative body) is allowed to engage in this kind of "taking" as long as the legislation is "rationally related to a legitimate public objective". This is a standard that is very deferential to Congress's analysis of the need for economic regultion in an area, as Senator Cornyn and others are aware.

Congress would barely be able to legislate at all, if it could not "take" through economic regulation.

Anyway, the Senate is not taking away their business; they have a slaughterhouse, pens, bolts, hooks; they can do a lateral move to cattle. This will require some economic adjustment on their part -- as in the case of ANY economic regulation -- but it is not as if the government were confiscating their actual assets and business.

Per the opposition, I thought the personal property issue related to horse owners, and their rights to dispose of their "property" as they saw fit, rather than an issue involving the assets of the foreign owned SHs. This is getting very complicated, isn't it? I just don't want to say the wrong thing.

A note about what is newsworthy

I had a conversation with Luke Burbank of NPR the other day. He had covered the story of 503 when it passed in the house.

He explained that, unfortunately, is it only when a bill passes or is moving in some way that it becomes newsworthy. He said that since almost all bills that come from the House to the Senate die in committee, it is not news that one is sitting there. He was very nice about this --just explaining how it all works. He applauded our use of the political process and understands that we need to get the word out to more people so that they will apply pressure; and he did say that he would try to get the issue onto NPR again this week (although it is up to his editor).

Notwithstanding all of that, Debra WI has found a way to make this story newsworthy, at least in Tennessee. Here is her recent forum posting:

HELLO EVERYONE, IMPORTANT NEWS: ALTHOUGH WE MUST STAY ON COURSE BY GETTING MORE COSPONSORS, SOME OF US CAN HELP BY ALSO CONTACTING THE TENNESSEE MEDIA. I spoke with my Washington Contact today and was told that if Senator Frist is not responding, we must keep on the media, if the media is contacted by the Tennessee Constituents telling them that their Senator, Senator Frist is not responding to their phone calls, faxes, or emails, the best way to get to Frist is the Tennessee media. ALTHOUGH YOU WOULD THINK THAT THE MEDIA WOULD AIR A STORY ABOUT BANNING HORSE SLAUGHTER, IT INTERESTS THEM MORE THAT THEIR SENATOR IS NOT RESPONDING TO HIS CONSTIUENTS.

This is Marilyn again:

So, Tennessee would be a great place for some dignitary to speak about slaughter issues at a public forum of some kind, and invite the press; and that would be a springboard for the Tennessee press to also talk about Senator Frist's nonresponsiveness. And then, of course, we would leverage the national press into the picture.

Anyone know any famous musicians or music stars in Tennessee who would like to jump-start this??

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at September 28, 2006 3:28 PM

Jennifer Blome emailed me this morning to thank me for my info. She says she has been trying to cover this story for a long time!

Again, the trailer accident provided the hook for the media.

The media needs a hook.

A press conference by an advocate can be a hook. See my post above at 3:28. This does not just apply to Tennessee...

Watch out for my statistics. I went back and looked; some sources say only 40,000 horses are stolen annually, not 50,000; some say the figure on horses who die through accidents, euthanasia, etc., is 690,000, not 900,000. I am planning to use the lower figures from now on. I think it is best to be conservative. I had been using, I think, the Rozzane letter in the forum...

Breeders' Cup saddled with nagging issue

GRAND PRAIRIE — The $14 million Breeders' Cup arrives here next Saturday, setting the stage for a strange confluence at Lone Star Park.

Not only will the event showcase the best thoroughbred racehorses in the country, it will serve as a platform for members of an unlikely alliance seeking to stop the slaughter of horses for human consumption; horse lovers will hand out pamphlets at the track decrying the little-known industry.

With two of the three U.S. horse slaughterhouses located in Texas, each less than 45 minutes from the site of the Breeders' Cup, their proximity to the track is a reminder of the thin line horses walk between vastly different fates: glory on the track or ignoble death at a packing plant.

Sometimes, one fate follows the other. Ferdinand, the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner and 1987 Breeders' Cup Classic, winner was slaughtered for food in Japan in 2002 after he failed at stud. Similar ignominy might await any of the horses in the Breeders' Cup, slaughter opponents say.

Vet: Pony dragged behind truck at Loxley had to be euthanized

9/27/2006, 1:54 p.m. CT
The Associated Press
SUMMERDALE, Ala. (AP) A 3-year-old pony's fight to stay alive after being dragged behind a flatbed truck has been lost.

A veterinarian at the Baldwin Animal Clinic in Summerdale said the animal's injuries were too great to overcome and the tiny horse was euthanized Wednesday morning.

Jet, a shetland pony, sustained massive skin and muscle trauma when it was dragged along 500 feet of asphalt on Alabama 59 in Loxley. Police believe the man accused of dragging the pony behind his truck Saturday night is Jerry Cruthers, 46.

Additional charges are pending against Cruthers. He was originally charged with animal cruelty and reckless endangerment and now faces a felony charge of killing or disabling livestock.
Cruthers remains in the Daphne City Jail. Police said he had been drinking alcohol at the time of his arrest and told officers he didn't know the pony was behind the truck.

Police Lt. Danny Bell said Cruthers would not be released until his identity is confirmed.

Rick Kirkland, the pony's owner and operator of Dade City, Fla.-based Palm Amusements, said he had used the pony for children's rides as part of his carnival show. The show was held at Loxley.

"I have told the police that I will assist with the prosecution in any way that I can," Kirkland said.

Slaughter will be exposed in Texas

Proximity of two slaughterhouses to the track hosting racing's championship day probably will get national attention

by Bill Heller

Horse racing's dirty little secret is about to be revealed. On October 30, the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be held at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, and, either through demonstrations by animal activists or stories by enterprising journalists, everyone in the country will learn that Thoroughbred racing's championship day is being conducted in the back yard of two foreign-owned slaughterhouses that inhumanely butcher American horses, including Thoroughbreds, for human consumption overseas.

These slaughterhouses operate despite a 1949 Texas state law prohibiting the selling, exhibition for sale, possession for sale, or transfer for sale of horse meat for human consumption. That makes this sordid picture even uglier.

The two slaughterhouses, Beltex Corp. in Fort Worth, some 20 miles west of Lone Star, and Dallas Crown Packaging in Kaufman, about 40 miles southeast of Lone Star, maintain they are not subject to Texas state law because the horse meat is sold overseas.

Texas Attorney General John Cronyn, who has since been elected to the United States Senate, ruled on August 7, 2002, that Texas state law does apply and that the owners of the companies should be prosecuted. The companies responded by filing a federal lawsuit and have remained open pending the resolution of that litigation.

Meanwhile, horses are slaughtered every business day.

The French-owned Beltex has been slaughtering horses since 1978. Belgium-owned Dallas Crown Packaging has been operating since 1994. In 2003, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 49,325 American horses were slaughtered at the two Texas plants for human consumption overseas.

Paula Bacon, mayor of Kaufman, is not particularly proud of her city's industry. "It is gruesome, inhumane, and everything you think it would be," Bacon said in July. "It has an incredible smell, with thick, thick black flies [everywhere]. This morning in Texas, I got up at 6:30, and I opened the back door. I'm looking for fresh air, and then it hits me, the smell of urine and blood. I thought, 'They're killing today.'"

Bacon, 50, grew up in Kaufman, a city of 6,600. She remembers the stories she was told as a kid. "People would go around saying these horses are old and sick and have a defect in their legs that would cripple them later in life," she said. "They put a buzz out."

Bacon's friend, Mary Nash, also grew up there. "The stories floating around town were that they all had diseases," Nash said. "That's what they were telling people when they slaughtered horses, that it was okay to slaughter them."

Nash discovered the truth when she returned to Kaufman in 1987 and took a closer look. "I remembered the first time I got a good look at the horses," Nash said. "I was amazed. I thought these horses looked a lot better than any horse I ever rode when I was a kid in Kaufman. A lot better. I thought, 'My God, why are these horses being killed?' These horses are gorgeous. I was so disgusted. It made me so mad."

Ultimately, she responded by creating her own anti-slaughter Web site.

Horses are slaughtered for human consumption at only one other plant in the United States, Cavel International Corp. in DeKalb, Illinois, which reopened on June 9 amid great controversy.

Soon, there will be national controversy. How will people respond to the Breeders' Cup being held in the neighborhood of two horse slaughterhouses in Texas? What message will millions of television viewers glean, that Thoroughbreds better be good enough to compete in the Breeders' Cup so they do not wind up slaughtered down the road? Or that the Thoroughbred industry thinks slaughtering horses for human consumption is okay?

Thoroughbred racing received black eyes from the death of Racing Hall of Fame horse Exceller, who perished in a Swedish slaughterhouse in 1997, and the fate of '86 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner and '87 Horse of the Year Ferdinand, who is believed to have been slaughtered in Japan in 2002.

How will racing's championship day in Texas look in proximity to horse slaughter in America?

Exceller and Ferdinand were slaughtered overseas, a discovery that took diligent research after they had been slain. That delay somewhat deflated the news impact of their demise.

But less-accomplished Thoroughbreds are still being butchered daily right here in America, not many miles from the site of Thoroughbred racing's crowning event. Soon everybody will know.

Right, ESPN will do a good job. Should someone talk to Jeanine Edwards about this? Maybe Alex can.

I just meant, the big push is right now to get this to the Senate floor. I'm not sure when that particular window of opportunity will end for S. 1915.

Soccoro
That is a fabulous story.

So, the hook would be -- "Two years ago, the Breeder's Cup was held in Grand Prairie, Texas, virtually in the back yard of two foreign-owned slaughterhouses that were killing thousands of young, healthy horses every year for export to foreign markets as horsemeat. Today, ESPN checks to see whether anything has changed in Texas."

And then they also mention Illinois.

Hi Marilyn ... I guess I'm a little confused by your post ... I think that the location of the Breeder's Cup being in KY is very pertinent because it is within fairly close proximity to the slaughterhouses in both TX and IL, and of course, Kentucky IS THE PREMIER thoroughbred bastion in the world.

You may be looking at it from a different viewpoint because I know that you are very very well-versed on all of this, much moreso than I am, so will you please clarify the reason for your statement so that I understand it, too. Thanks so much, Marilyn, and you are doing a great job of educating and enlightening all of us!!

#################Isn't the Breeder's Cup in Kentucky this year? So the location is not so pertinent...But still, it is a good platform. I'm just worried that it will be too late. I don't quite understand the Senate's timetable...at what point it will be too late for this session.

Does anyone know whether Mrs. Jackson has any plans to have press conferences on this, leading up to the Breeder's Cup? That does seem like a perfect venue for her as a spokesperson.

Hello Nation...

Just got back from vacation and am trying to catch up with posts. You've been "busy bees". Getting a lot accomplished, and more co-sponsors. I'm so very proud of you all.

I'm at work, and I need to try and catch up here as well.

I was on a fishing trip in the mountains and had an amazing experience. A group of 4 trail horses got loose and were trotting up the trail towards me. I set my gear down and stepped in front of the lead horse, grabbed his rope and began to soothe him. His 3 followers stopped behind and I softly spoke to him, caressed his neck & head and waited for their caretaker to come for them. When the experience was over and the horses were gone I broke into tears and was completely overwhelmed with emotion. The experience of contact with a horse....very moving. I passed out flyers and spoke to people, who like so many are totally unaware.

Jen...I'm soooo with you. I cannot believe the inhumanity on this planet. Often I feel like I could move to the mountains away from humans and be with my animals. And then their are times that we have the capacity for great humanity, like everything the FOB's are doing on s1915.

Being away from any news & internet for a week I'm really out of the loop. Please someone bring me up to speed. I'm aware of the accident and will send money at my break.

Frist is ignoring us so I suppose we have to keep at him. I'm in California....so anybody....what can I do to help at this point?

When do they go on recess? What's this BS about Pool Covers?

FOR ALEX OR ANYONE WHO CAN ANSWER ...

Horse racing's dirty little secret is about to be revealed. On October 30, the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be held at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT THIS IS AND HOW IT DIFFERS FROM THE 'REAL' BREEDERS' CUP NOV. 4 IN KY? WHAT ARE THE WORLD THOROUGHBRED CHAMPIONSHIPS?

THANKS!!

You were concerned about the location, Kentucky is no too far from Illinois, close enought wouldn't you think? More of a reason, close to our thoroughbreds.

That was a good observation.

Linnie Kentucky is a TB bastion all right, but maybe not in the world..don't forget UAE when you're talking "world"!!! They're pretty big, won't you think?!!!

Well, since I live in the USA, naturally, I'm going to embellish one of our TB strongholds. Never having been to the UAE, I have no way of knowing except from what I read about all of the sheiks buying up horses in the millions of dollars.

But the historic culture and tradition will ALWAYS be Kentucky! There is only ONE "real" derby and it's called "THE KENTUCKY DERBY!" and nothing can take the magic, stature, prominence or magnificence away from that.

Personally, I don't care about the UAE because they all have kazillions of dollars there to spend, and I'd rather listen to "My Old Kentucky Home" anyday!!

But thanks for the correction, ara.

SALLY ... IT'S ALL OF US ... I am but one spoke in a very large wheel here. Each one of us does what we can with the strengths that we have. For me, telephone work isn't good because I have a hearing loss which makes conversation of a business nature a bit difficult for me and I don't have any long distance service. My strength lies in writing and that's what I enjoy doing ... so I just took the bull by the horns and sent emails from everyone in my family and friends circle to Sen. Martinez instead of asking them to do it and then hoping that they would. I had all the pertinent information as to names, addresses, email addies, etc. so it was all legitimate and I knew that each of these people supported this bill anyway! Of course, I did place several phone calls to Sen. Martinez' office over the last several weeks as well as to Frist and I also sent a whole slew of emails to Sen. Frist a couple of days ago ....

Every little bit helps from all of us!

Thank you, Capt. Carrot ...

But WE ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE ... And I'm just very proud of each and every one of us.

Hello, Barbaro
Hello Everyone

I just spoke to a male aid at Senator Frist's office. He told me that the three committies that Senator Frist is on, have nothing to do with the committees responsible for moving S1915 to the floor. He DID say that, as Majority Leader, Frist can urge committee expidition of bills and also urge collegues to vote one way or another.

He told me how busy the Senator is, and that most of the calls, and correspondances are handled by staff...and that the Senator is given updates on voter concerns.

I told him that I had wondered if the Senator ACTUALLY reads the e-mail, or listens to the VMs. I said that I am a bit alarmed to think that we are being represented by "un-elected staff" rather than by our actual representatives.
He assured me that the Senator is AWARE if the interest in the issue.

Instead of arguing, or taking a chance on antagonizing him, thus producing a "deaf ear" to my call, I asked him to please record my comments, and/or add my "yay" to the proper column, and, please make sure that Senator Frist, (busy man that he is), is at least apprised of the ground-swell on this issue.

He said that he would do so.

It was one more "drop" to fill the "glass." I will call, and e-mail Senator Frist's office again tomorrow anyway.

Hi again ... I am sure that the Sheikhs would buy Kentucky also ... thanks goodness they do not have that kind of leverage and free rein here .... they certainly have the money to buy it, though! LOL

Of course, I am so partial to The Kentucky Derby, Socorro, because of Secretariat and Barbaro's fantastic wins on that track, and nothing parallels the "Run for the Roses" in my opinion. So, I thank you for the 'vote of confidence' for Kentucky.

I also love Elvis' "Kentucky Rain", one of my favorites also, along with Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman!" Do you know that song also?

Just sent another letter to the newspapers in Colorado. The one I sent over the weekend was pretty long, so I sent a shorter one:

HR 503 and SENATE BILL S1915 – ANTI-HORSE SLAUGHTER ACT

On Sept 7th, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed HR 503 263-146. This was in direct response to outrage by the American People to the brutality of slaughtering (for human consumption in Europe and Asia) the Icon of the American Spirit – the Horse. These slaughterhouses are on American soil (two in Texas and one in Illinois) and slaughter 90,000 of our horses every year. Since the House bill has passed, they have ramped up the slaughter (essentially doubling it) in anticipation of a Senate passage. The slaughterhouses made over $60 million last year. The horses are either bought at auction or stolen from private owners.

Now, the corresponding bill S1915 has been put on “anonymous” hold by 5 US Senators as they have more “important” issues to discuss.

The “important” issues seem to include Senate Commerce Committee Approves Pool Safety Bill (9/27/2006) S. 3718 which would require manufacturers of drain covers to make and distribute only those drain covers that comply with anti-entrapment provisions of the national consensus standard. Is this a respresentation of the IMPORTANT issues they need to address?

Our Senators, Allard and Salazar have both come out AGAINST banning this slaughter. They are banking on the fact that most people do not know that this is even going and in our country no less. We do not eat horsemeat, it has not been used in pet food in years and the National Zoo in DC has stated they do not use it for their carnivores because of public complaints. The three slaughterhouses made $60 million last year, but only one paid taxes and that amounted to $5.

Horses are not raised as food animals – they are workers, companions, athletes and therapy animals. They have an important place in American history and they deserve to be treated with respect.

Please contact our Senators and let them know we will not have this happening to our horses. Slaughter is not humane and we owe our horses better than that.

Maybe they will print this one

Good Morning BarbaroWorld Family

Thanks to Alex for the updates and the neat by-story. You are a popular young man, aren't you?? Loved the story out of the UPenn publication, especially about the wedding invite and the little lady who has no internet capability, now taking herself to the library to keep up with our boy.

ACN! Great news, as always. Soon to be ACN the night before release from the hospital to HOME! I can FEEL it.

####
Anna, YOU ROCK Great story, you are the best for facilitating it.

####
LindaH I have been trying for almost two weeks now to get through to 9News here and the Today Show, especially the Today Show since they have had NO current reports on our boy and NOTHING on S.1915 You are so much more eloquent than I. If you have a moment, maybe you could drop them both a line with your wonderful flyer attached?? Will send you an email later today as well..XXXOOO

Yesterday really sucked. Bad news all around, uplifting news about our boy, great new pics, he DOES need a shave, however, but I love the Dr. Dean-look-alike buzz cut...imitation is the best form of flattery of course, and then last night the great interview of Terry Irwin. It was just awesome. My heart broke all over again for her loss of her prince, but she shared so much of her life with him, of her beautiful children who look JUST like him, and even though the universe lost such a remarkable person, he will go on.

Will check in with you all later. Alex almost received another hysterical woman email earlier. Thank goodness the site is back up and working. NO MORE tripping over the chord, (whoops) whoever is responsible, and you KNOW who you are.

Love to all

Question - How in God's name do you fit 41 horses on a trailer - like sardines likely, that's how.

No wonder the trailer flipped in that horrible accident. It took me this long to look at the story and see the pictures.

Hopefully this tragedy helps highlight the efforts here - it is a glaring example of unsafe transportation for these poor creatures.

Let this story help bring the slaughter issue to the forefront and not let these poor suffering horses die and suffer without being part of a greater cause.

But, the calls are more than she can handle and she said that if she had anything to say that we should know, that she will contact me, and I will post it immediately. In the meantime, she encourages us, as good foot soldiers, to continue calling the senators to co-sponsor...that is her ONLY request that pertains to us, because that is the ONLY thing that is going to save the horses.
It's very cut and dried.

The mayor said that "Texas Monthly" was there to do an article, and she said she is hoping for the best with this article, as it could be helpful. But, when the press is involved "you never know"
she said.

So, I am asking you, on behalf of the mayor, to please, please continue what you are doing. The mayor is doing EVERYTHING that is within her power to do in her sphere of influence. She is a besieged woman, what with the three lawsuits pending, and I am asking you to please honor her wishes in an effort to help her as much as we can.

And of course, Thursday is kill day at Kaufman.
Please pray, as I know we are.

I repeat, if there is anything that we need to know from the mayor it will get posted immediately. This will be posted on discussion and will re post later, so that everyone has a chance to see it.

Hi everyone, just got off the telephone with Senator Santorum office, spoke to his aid asked were he stood on s1915 anti-slaughter, and the aid said he did not know. Also asked if he would please co-sponsor the bill. The aid said he would relay the message, and that he had gotten alot of calls. I explained that we need his help, and this is a election year, and he needs our help also. Remember, if your senator does not get re-elected, you may not have a job. New faces everywere.

He said the senator would get back to me. (we will see).

Good morning Alex and Barbaro family

Got a much needed laugh out of the wedding invitation sent to Barbaro. I'm sure if he could attend, he'd be the center of attention.

Kudos to Anna, who perservered and got a TV station to air a story about the slaughterhouses.

Hey Barbaro sweetie!

AGN!! awwww now I can start my day. I'm sure you would have loved to attend that wedding, altho I dunno if you'd have enjoyed the refreshments. They might have had to have a few stud muffins for your delectation.

Twitch those cute ears, a nice whuffle would help, here's your song

Eat your carrots every day
No more bootie so you can play

Sunshine, breezes, grass everywhere
A little nip here, a little nip there
What could possibly compare?

Grow hoof grow! Heal leg heal!
That's become our daily appeal

Keep on doing like you are
You're our bright and shining star!

Have a great day babycakes! I'll be in later to check on you. Hugs and smoochies

Off to light candles

Someone just told me that December 13th is National Day of The Horse and that was put into effect by the 108th Congress to honor everything the horse has done for our country. Is this true??

BOBBIE B.
I called Martinez office and talked to someone ,who said she is sure he sponsored it. Then I said I need verification so this can go out over the internet.
She started disemmbling then saying that she didn't KNOW FOR SURE. Then she referred me to
Thomas.gov and the Martinez website to check for
myself.
I think they are just saying what we want to hear
now to get rid of us. Don't be discouraged. I was
earlier , but just decided I will keep calling anyway. Makes me mad enough to bite horseshoe
nails into ! But I will continue to be polite.
I'm so sorry they are now trying to trick us.
thanks, BB

Ask for Frank Walker in senator Martinez's office. I only got a recording, and did leave the message..evidetnly, he is the aid for animals rights issues.

I think we need to let THEM KNOW that WE KNOW that these aids are PAID BY US, to take our messages directly to the senator. We sound more well versed when doing this. I got quite a run around in one of their offices, and I just kept saying, don't you have an aid for animal rights issues?...and the girl answering the phone finally said, "yes"...but I had to really keep after it to get her to say that. FYI!
