    Barbaro Updates: 88

    updates are now here.

Update 740: Sue McMullen sent an e-mail which highlights the fantastic racing we have from Longchamp on sunday:

A feast of racing in Europe this weekend, culminating in Sunday's Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, a mile and a half Turf race at Longchamp, France's premier track, which offers as much of a challenge in terms of its undulations as Epsom. First run in 1920 in its present form, the Arc is a spin-off from the Grand Prix de Paris which started in 1863 and evolved over the years, adding big prize money which attracted foreign runners and eventually the inclusion of older horses. By 1920 it was decided to 'rebrand' the race by creating a prestigious international event, a decision made by a committee that included the British Ambassador and the French racing authorities, so the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe was born, named after soldiers that served in the Great War.

The Arc weekend now offers a total purse of 4.5 million euros, with 2 million going to the winner of the Arc, a seriously prestigious race, which continues to be hyped as Europe's premier, all-aged Flat race, certainly over this distance. But it could also be argued that the Arc is the premier event for this distance at this time of the year, as nowadays the all-aged King George run at Ascot in July would also be a major target for a middle-distance horse. For example, Hurricane Run, last year's winner of the Arc, won this year's King George and will take some beating on Sunday.

In terms of this race's position in the racing calendar (outside the US), it would be the principal end of season target for a mile and a half turf horse, with the Breeders' Cup an option thereafter. It is unlikely that a European horse good enough to be a major contender for the Arc, would bypass this race and head straight for the Breeders' Cup. Ideally, they would be able to do both but the Arc is a very tough race to be a mere prep for the Breeders Cup. Having said that, it didn't exactly slow down the awesome High Chaparral who ran third in two Arcs, before winning both his Breeders' Cups. But it's a possible case of what might have been the year Sakhee, one of the toughest horses in training, won the Arc and just 20 days later went down a nose to Tiznow in the Classic at Belmont, on a surface that didn't suit him.

The Arc field is limited to 18, but given the nature of the track, a field of that size will inevitably result in hard luck stories and just occasionally, the race throws up a result that leaves a bit of head scratching. But it takes a very good horse to win, combining speed and stamina in equal measure and in its 84 runnings has seen some of the finest turf horses in the world added to the roll of honour. This year, just 8 go to post and while there have been some defections due to the going, the top three, Hurricane Run, Deep Impact and Shirocco stand their ground.

Just as the Irish are an integral part of the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival in March, adding a vital ingredient to its unique atmosphere, it has to be said that the British and Irish are just as important to the Arc weekend and thousands head off by train or by air, either making a weekend of it, or just going over for Sunday's racing, which also stages the Group 1 Prix de l'Abbaye, one of Europe's premier Sprints and the Group 1 Prix de l'Opera, limited to fillies and mares and which now includes Mandesha, who at one stage had been a possible for the Arc.

Tomorrow Sue will preview the Arc field. The Arc will also be broadcast on sunday, on HRTV. Of course also tomorrow we have some great racing in the US, broadcast on ESPN, 4 - 6 pm (previewed in update 725).

Update 739: Just spoke to Peter, who had spoken to Michael, who visited about 4:30 pm. Barbaro remains comfortable. Michael mentioned to Peter he was "squealing" ... I guess he saw Michael and assumed he was off to go outside. Anyway, whatever the reason for the squeal, squealing is good!

Update 738: Rachel from Kennett Florist just posted this update (comment timestamp: 9:21 pm):

Just back from NBC. Everyone seems in good spirits today... must be Friday! We had heard Mr B was low on carrots, so we loaded him up for the weekend. We also had a nice big basket of carrots and apples for the donor horses (and goats and pigs, etc). It is such a beautiful cool fall day here... I think it's time for apple picking (although we are up to our elbows in apples here these days :)... guess I'll have to bring some in the form of a pie!). Hope eveyone has a great weekend!

Also, wanted to thank each and every one who has worked so hard with S.1915. We're trying to do what we can at this end. Keep up the fight!

    WE BELIEVE!!

    Rachel at Kennett Florist

I also wanted to post another beautiful poem: We Are The Horses.

Update 737: A great AP article from Rich Rosenblatt: Barbaro an inspiration on and off the race track. I had noted in an earlier update that I met the writer when he was in Fair Hill a couple of days ago (Barbaro nipped his trouser leg). Anyway, here are some excerpts:

"You can just see it in him, he wants to survive," Barbaro's exercise rider Peter Brette said. "He does everything right to allow himself to get better. And he's had a really good month or so now. He's tougher than I gave him credit for."

    and

The cast could come off within two weeks and be replaced by a splinted bandage. It remains now because Richardson does not want to add stress on the foot with laminitis. "I'm being very conservative," he said. "The cast would be off the right hind if there was no laminitis in the left hind."

    and

"I really believe it's a miracle," Gretchen Jackson said. "Everything has just seemed to come together against incredible odds."

The outpouring of get-well cards, flowers and gifts hasn't let up, either. During his stay, the colt has been sprinkled with holy water and received hundreds of gift baskets and thousands of drawings from children wishing him well. Tens of thousands of e-mails have been sent to the hospital's Web site.

Jackson recalls one that read: "Believe in Barbaro: A Miracle in Progress."

"That about sums it up," he said.

The entire article is a must read.

Update 736: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (thursday night). I saw Peter coming back from my fourth set (Rocky), he had heard from Michael, who had heard from Dr. Richardson. Michael is not at Fair Hill this morning.

Lots of action this morning at Fair Hill, most of which is action you would rather avoid. One loose horse, one run off, all first thing in the morning. I think all involved are fine, but I know from experience, being run off with is the single worst feeling a rider can have. The last time I was run off with it was a stupid mistake on my part, I had forgotten to tighten my girth. I turned my horse round to begin his gallop (I had not ridden him before, and he was supposed to be breezing) and as soon as I did I felt the saddle slip forward on top of his withers. The horse took off, and there was nothing I could do except sit as still as possible and steer the horse to the inside rail. This I did, and we went for a mile and a half, I was then picked up by a pony. Anyway, it was an experience hard to forget.

OK, back to today, Chappy breezed second set, on the woodchip. She went a nice half, finishing strongly. She does seem to like the chips, lets hope she likes the new tapeta surface when it is ready.
update, 8:45 am, friday september 29

Update 735: The morning update for Barbaro will again be a little later, possibly around 8:30 am. Barbara Livingston e-mailed me a link to her Precisionist Album. Barbara also included this commentary in the e-mail:

Precisionist provided me my first Blood-Horse cover over twenty years ago, and the graceful chestnut gelding has been close to my heart since.

He was a brilliant racehorse - a true Hall of Famer - and after retirement he remained classy, tolerant and proud. The lanky chestnut held his head unusually high, with deep-set, brilliant, dark eyes. Those eyes understood the world.

I visited Kentucky for a whirlwind trip (less than 24 hours) Tuesday, and had a few hours to spare before heading to the airport. We decided to swing by Old Friends to see our old buddy Precisionist. We called. They mentioned Precisionist was failing, and nothing more could be done for him. The staff still allowed us to visit.

There stood Precisionist, resting against Michael Blowen as Michael rubbed Precisionist's 'special spots.' The famous gelding, in obvious discomfort, eased under Michael's touch. When Michael ceased rubbing him, Precisionist's ears flicked back. Michael kept rubbing. Several volunteers stood vigil nearby, tending to Precisionist's every need. Tears were rubbed away.

Precisionist eventually made it clear he wanted to rest and was led back to his sunlit stall, laid thick with straw. Staff volunteers brought him first-rate alfalfa and cleaned, cut carrots. After resting awhile, Precisionist dipped his head to eat.

Before leaving, I peered through the stall rungs. Precisionist was watching me. I looked into those soulful eyes one last time and said, 'Thank you, old boy.'

Precisionist was euthanized the following day and laid to rest at Old Friends.

He was so beloved, gallant, proud and beautiful; and Old Friends treated him like the champion he was. They understood.

    Hi Alex,

Those pictures are beautiful. I write this with tears streaming down my face. What a proud and soulful horese. Those eyes say it all. I am so glad he was surrounded by such wonderful people. I wish every horse had the same love and care that he did when the end draws near. A peaceful goodbye.

    Thanks

Shelley A is having surgery today. Please keep her in your prayers. She didn't want it posted on the board before and didn't want a big fuss about it. I will post an update later when I get it. Perhaps I should move the topic to the Message Forum.

And a thank you to Barbaro fans everywhere. On this site you have exhibited love and caring and real "family values". You have all, thanks to Barbaro, brought so much good to the world in general and my life in particular. Enjoy your day.

    Good Morning, Fans of Barbaro!

Alex, thank you for the links to Barbara Livingston's Precisionist collection. He is such a beautiful horse...and now another horse angel. You take such good care of us - even letting us know when the morning updates are going to be delayed.

Shelley, I knew about today...you are (always) in my prayers as are Ima, Alibi and Boxcar. Heal fast, dear lady.

We had intense storms pass thru Chester County last night...hope Barbaro was sleeping thru all of of them in his stall at NBC. I'm going up to the ranch today for Windy/Stormy day and be sure they're all OK.

    Not much else going on.

LITF, I know you welcomed Precisionist with gentleness and love, my sweet Long Time Sun.

Barbaro, its a quiet day here in Chester County. Just take it easy, hope you get outside to graze today and do what Dr. R tells you to do. Your spirit shines more and more. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Take care everybody. We need to keep pushing...we're making progress to saving our horse family (and maybe other animals as well.).

    No retreat, no surrender.

    Healing and Peace,

RE: St. Louis Accident & Media Attention re: Anti-Slaughter

Our local fox and NBC affiliates had in-depth stories about the horses rescued in the accident. They showed the pregnant mare that was on her way to be slaughtered and talked about the practice. The owner is no where to be found (coward). Again, if you can help out, please consider donating to the MO Humane Society to help care for the injured horses.

I emailed a local radio personality yesterday, McGraw Milhaven, about his comments on his radio show ridiculing the attention of this issue and he has emailed me back a question. I would like your help with my answer. Here's the question:

Are you upset at the way they are killed, or that they are killed at all.

If they found a more humane way for them to be killed, and set up some guide lines, would you be okay with that????

    McGraw

Posted by: Sheila at September 29, 2006 12:15 PM

Good morning Barbaro, awaiting ACN. Keep up the great work sweet boy. Dr. R. thank you so much for all you do.

Alex, thank you for this wonderful site, and for all you do.

Well everyone it's Friday, so keep the phone ringing and the faxes going our.

Thank you Alex for the link to the beautiful photos of Precisionist and the wonderful commentary that only the eye of a photographer can capture and share. What a wonderful and peaceful way to end a life well-lived. I wish all race horses received the same kind of loving care that Precisionist was given. Barbara L. is correct in saying Precisionist's eyes understood the world.

Barbara Livingston was given the opportunity to come full circle with Precisionist. So glad she had a few hours to spare so that she was able to make such a special moment happen. I think they were meant to say goodbye to each other.

    ####

My prayers are with you Shelley for a speedy recovery. I will miss your posts that are always so informative and helpful.

Sweet Barbaro, keep Dr. R smiling with the progress you are making daily. Enjoy the visits you get and the treats that come with the visits. I have to say, I envy that massage blanket Peter puts on you. I could use one myself on cold, dreary days like today. Grow that hoof big boy. Butterfly kisses to you.

Good morning Bobby, Alex & Everyone! The story and photo about Precisionist had the tears flowing, what a special horse he was! The photo in the article Alex posted with his head resting on the shoulder of Michael Blowen has to be one of the most precious photos I've had the privilege to see!

Posted by: BETTY FORD at September 29, 2006 12:28 PM

As always, thank you Alex for letting us know about Barbaro's update being a little late. I pray he had another comfortable night and that his healing will continue as the days go by.

Someone posted yesterday that they thought this board was just for Barbaro and I thought about that. The Preakness left me devastated and has changed my entire perspective on the world of horses. I've always loved them, since I was little, but now I feel passionate about knowing what is happening in this world. It has made me aware of how really important they are to us and the sadness when we lose them.

So as much as we love Barbaro and pray so hard he will recover, I believe that even if we post on other issues related to these beloved animals, Barbaro - even if not always mentioned in a post -is at the heart of why many us are now here and involved. He is the reason that we have been brought together as a community. This is why he is so special to us.

Thanks this morning for the story and beautiful pictures of Perfectionist. I visited Old Friends two years ago. What a wonderful place, with wonderful, caring people.

I pray Barbaro will continue to heal. I can not thank enough those close to him who are doing what they can to help him recover. And you, Alex, for your hard work in letting us know how he is. We love Barbaro.

    Carol Nichols,

    My thoughts.....

It's not just the way the are killed, but what they are killed for. Using them for some European or Japanese dinner is NOT OK.

More humane and guidelines would not be the complete answer - the purpose of the killing is still objectionable.
We dont' want our dogs and cats to be someone else's dinner, we don't want that fate for our equine friends.

    SHEILA:

    >>>>I emailed a local radio personality yesterday, McGraw Milhaven, about his comments on his radio show ridiculing the attention of this issue and he has emailed me back a question. I would like your help with my answer. Here's the question:

    >>Are you upset at the way they are killed, or that they are killed at all.>>>>

Sheila, thanks for sending him an email. We have to separate out downright evil people from those who don't know and aren't aware of a situation.. It shows something good that he asked questions..

My answer would be that horses should not be killed at all (excepting humanely euthanized for a valid medical reason). The reason is simply that horses are not in the class of food animals. They are working and companion animals and are capable of deep and trusting bonds with humans. The horse has made great contributions to humankind and is one species in only a handful that actually enjoys the company of humans. They are much like a dog - that is the relationship many aware people compare it to. If you're not aware of this, a horse may be seen as just another animal.

    >>>If they found a more humane way for them to be killed, and set up some guide lines, would you be okay with that????>>>

    No.

Thanks, Sheila. Have a good day you and everyone, specially you Barbaro!

I too have visited Old Friends and saw the love and compassion for the horses that they serve. Precisionist was blessed to have had Michael by his side and all the wonderful volunteers. I remember the first time I visited, they were a small farm with Sunshine Forever, Creator, and Ruhlmann being the champions they were caring for and I remember seeing the bucket with the fresh, clean, cut up carrots for treats for the horses. Those of you who want to help, but unable to have hands-on opportunities, this is a wonderful organization with loving people who are blessed to be able to address issue of our champions living their days with honor and loving care. Those of us that are concerned about our champions being in other countries (and in the case of Taylor's Special being in our OWN country) and being lost like Ferdinand and not given the honor of proper care after giving us so much, are thankful for Michael and Old Friends.

###A huge storm (which we seldom have) blew up yeserday afternoon and took out our power until this morning so I couldn't post that I got a call back from Kent Bacus (Sen Dole's aide ) yesterday evening. He was very upbeat about S1915. Told me that yes there were calls regarding the bill that were against it because the callers feared their rights to do what they wanted to do with their animals would be taken away from them. He thought if the bill is ammended that it may make a difference to these callers ( I suspect it is the "sell" word in the bill...just reading between the lines of his remarks ). He also said they have had many more calls favoring the bill. Kent said (twice)that the bill will most likely be going up for a vote in November of this year. He said Ms. Dole had not yet confided in him as to the way she is voting. I handled the call with the least emotion that I could...didn't want any confrontations with him....because it would ruin it for others who will be calling.

    D'Anne,

I received pretty much the same call from Kent yesterday after 5. I was just amazed he actually returned my call. Yes November is good news to some extent, but I keep thinking of the thousands of poor souls that will be brutalized in the interim, so I'll keep pressing.

Something more. I object to the words "upset," and "would you be ok?"

All here have approached this issue in a rational manner and we have taken it up on principle and seriously - not emotionally. Upset is not the right word here. We are not hysterical people, we are trying to get this world to evolve into a better place - even the misfits who participate in the slaughter, who don't yet know they'd be better off not engaging in this horror.

And we'd be "ok" is an understatement. We only want horses and every animal to be treated fairly and compassionately.

    Thanks, sorry for the soapbox..

My thoughts and prayers are extended to Michael, and all the volunteers at Old Friends, all the second of June connections, Mr. Aleo and Mr. Gilchrist, Pasqual, Suzie, and the rest of Lifts connections.

Good morning, all lovely horses and their fans... Just wanted to remind everyone that Harry Aleo and Greg Gilchrist will have their young Vicarino running in his second race ever today, in the 7th race at Golden Gate Fields. He won his first race by 5-1/2 lengths, and had a hard time finding his second race. With Fog's memorial tomorrow, it would be wonderful if Vicarino could win today, will have my fingers crossed for two very special people and Fog...

The video of the race is usually available shortly after through their website.

Info on the race and other events at GGF this week is here

(I know, where is that 'tiny URL' when you need it, racing off to work?).

Also have hooves crossed for good/better/great news from the Senate...

Barbaro, I hope you have been keeping the hoof fairy supplied...

Love and great respect to all,

Alex, thanks for the update! I cannot imagine what it would be like to be on a running-loose racehorse! I'm glad all involved are ok.

I forgot to mention yesterday that the blog link "chance encounter" indicates that you are a celebrity! Of course, we all already knew that!

Can anyone explain what tapeta surface is? Is the switch due to the changing weather? How long will you train and what happens at Fair Hill in the winter?

Thanks for all that you do.

    Hi Family

TGIF and praise the Lord for ACN!
    #######
As has been my fledgling Friday tradition, I will entertain us with some TGIF equine humour:

All I need to know in life I learned from my horse
*When in doubt, run far, far away.
*You can never have too many treats.
*Passing gas in public is nothing to be ashamed of.
*New shoes are an absolute necessity every 6 weeks.
*Ignore cues. They're just a prompt to do more work.
*Everyone loves a good, wet, slobbery kiss.
*Never run when you can jog. Never jog when you can walk. And never walk when you can stand still.
*Heaven is eating at least 10 hours a day... and then sleeping the rest.
    *Eat plenty of roughage.
*Great legs and a nice rear will get you anywhere. Big, brown eyes help too.
*When you want your way, stomp hard on the nearest foot.
*In times of crisis, take a poop.
*Act dumb when faced with a task you don't want to do.
*Follow the herd. That way, you can't be singled out to take the blame.
*A swift kick in the butt will get anyone's attention.
*Love those who love you back, especially if they have something good to eat.

Just found our boy's name mentioned in the following article. Made me smile to think that Michael Matz and Barbaro were making history with the decision to race in the Florida Derby then rest 5 weeks before the KD. Here is a small part from the article. Thank you Mr. Matz for following the path that would be Barbaro's destiny.

Gulfstream's Florida Derby in same spot for '07

Mike Welsch, Daily Racing Form 9/28/2006

Gulfstream Park will tweak its 3-year-old stakes program in 2007 but won't be making any changes to its cornerstone event, the $1 million Florida Derby, which for the third straight year will be run five weeks before the Kentucky Derby.

Gulfstream Park received some criticism last year when it moved the Florida Derby to a spot five weeks in advance of the Kentucky Derby; it had traditionally been run four weeks in advance. The detractors were silenced this year, however, when Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby after winning the Florida Derby

    Way to go champ!

    Quote from above
    _______________________________________________

    _________________________________________

    Pam,
I could not agree more...thank you for saying this so clearly.

Mrs Jackson has called upon the Fans Of Barbaro to rise up in the name of all horses and that is exactly what we will do. Each of us are doing what we can seprately on our own, yet we are united by Barbaro. We are Inspired by Barbaro. We muster up our strength and fortitude by the example that he has set. We are further inspired by the care and concern that we show for each other.

In the world of racing lingo, it had been said that Barbaro "Had gears that had not even been tested yet" and that he "Ran hard without being asked".

    The tables are now turned.
I believe that some of Barbaro's untested gears are transfering over to us.
He is handing them over and it is now up to us to "run with out being asked"

And I think if Barbaro were the wagering kind of horse, he put all his carrots and peppermints on "FANS OF BARBARO...TO WIN!"

Well said! They say that everything happens for a reason. If Barbaro had won the Triple Crown he would have been a hero and well remembered. But because of the accident, he will be remembered for all he has done. For fighting hard in the face of adversity and in the test of his character. He has brought us all together. He is primary in all our thoughts and prayers, but he has the Barbaro Effect. We think of Mike Rea, Michael Matz, Erin, Foggy and the Anti Horse Slaughter Bill. We pray and light candles for all of them and for all our friends here. And for all our kids with fur.

We are fighting for Barbaro and for all others. Imagine how he will always be remembered for all this. It is a small miracle that we all came together. He is also a small miracle.

Bobby, You keep fighting and I'll keep praying.

Just got into an argument with an insensitive co-worker. Yesterday I sent a link to the MO Humane Society encouraging a select group of my friends here at work to consider helping the rescued horses. My insensitive co-worker commented to me that his only thought upon seeing those horses was that he wouldn't eat something that looked that scraggly anyway.

What is wrong with people in this world? I had to excuse myself I was so angry and didn't trust myself to respond appropriately.

Not a good way to start my day. I guess I can cross him off of the list of people that I respect.

Thanks guys for letting me get that off of my chest. My husband told me this morning he thinks I am getting "obsessed" (this comment came after he saw the email I received from the local radio host in response to my email about his insensitive comments re: the horses on his radio program). So venting to him I guess is now out of the question.

This is what's wrong with the world I think. No one cares enough about anything, and then when you stand up for what you believe in, you are considered "obsessed". UGGHHHH.

Happy Friday, BTW. Jazz, thanks for helping me smile this morning!

As I sit here with tears running down my cheeks, I want to thank you so much for your moving tribute to Precisionist. I'm so glad you were able to see him one last time before he left this life...and I am so glad to find out about Old Friends, which I will now look into more.

And Barbaro Jackson, you continue to do it, as I knew you would...accomplishing what no one could have imagined by bringing so many humans together and inspiring them to go out there and save and improve lives for so many of your equine family.

Of course, we have yor human family to thank for that too--your human parents--the Jacksons, Michael, and Dr. Dean...and of course Tim and Alex who have provided the place for all of us to congregate, organize, and galvanize our efforts.

Thanks so much, Alex and Barbara Livingston, for the piece on Precisionist. It made me cry a "good cry". He was so loved; that makes all the difference. What a special horse! He was the first Breeder's Cup horse I fell in love with. I will never forget him.

In the early 90's, I went to Claiborne Farm to visit. I was shown around the farm and got to visit with all the stallions, but the guy I wanted to see the most was Ferdinand. I had my picture taken with him and then the very nice groom cut a small lock of his tail for me. I remember thinking that Ferdinand had the most beautiful head I had ever seen. He had a sore hoof that day and wasn't in the best of spirits, but I looked into his eyes and saw the Champion he was. I had so enjoyed his racing career. This special chestnut was a Derby and Classic winner!! I was honored to be in his presence. I found out that he was later sold to Japan as a breeding stallion because he hadn't done very well in America. I thought that it was nice that he would get another chance, even if it wasn't in the US.

Fast forward some 10 years; I was at Blue Ridge Equine Clinic with my show horse, waiting for her minor surgery to be over with. I was mulling through catalogs and saw Ferdinand's picture on the front. To my unspeakable horror, I read that he had died in a Japanese slaughterhouse; Ferdinand, our Champion! I couldn't believe it and became physically ill. My heart was broken. If someone had told me, I would have paid to bring him home myself, whatever the cost. It just tore me up. I still think about it and it will forever be hard for me to deal with. How could this have become his end?

This horror must stop. The anti-slaughter bill will pass, but there will be negatives attached. Horse lovers and vets everywhere will have to be more diligent. We have to turn in any abuse and/or neglect cases we see. We must see the big picture. Horses serve us - we MUST serve them, for their ENTIRE life. Maybe people will stop breeding, buying, and owning horses they can not afford and do not want. There is beauty in EVERY horse. They are noble, brave, and loving. They deserve a good life, always!

This is long, but I had to put my feelings into words. Thanks will never be enough to our beloved Barbaro for all that has been accomplished through this website and the "Fans of Barbaro". Thank you, Alex. What you have done is truly remarkable. You have made such a difference.

Love you, Bobby, always. You are such a shining light. Have a great day, big boy!

You are welcome about the video of Terri Irwin's interview from Australia. These horses may not exactly be wildlife, but I feel the need to be warriors for them right now. Steve and Terri have definatly been an inspiration for me during this last few weeks of struggle with Congress and now the Senate. To borrow a phrase from Steve Irwin...HORSES RULE!

The photo of Precionist and Michael brought me to tears. You could just tell in P's eyes that the time had come for him to go to the Rainbow Bridge, where he will once again be able to run free with all of his friends. He had a wonderful life and he will be missed.

Great news on our Big B again. ACN i just love those initials. Have a great day Barbaro - Cooper and all his friends send you many "woofs". Enjoy this crisp fall day as you graze outside with the sun shining brightly down on you. Luv and scratchies.

mcgraw@ktrs.com is the email address. I also sent him an email but did not hear back from him.

Someone posted this Mahatma Gandhi quote in messages which I think is appropriate for our grassroots effort:
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

Googling and found a neat website called ourfirsthorse.com. A lady (I assume) named Mikki is blogging their experiences as a first time horse owner. It's funny and interesting and informative. But she has a section re horse slaughter in which the question is being asked whether she should support S1915. I blathered on too long on the site I think but you might want to drop a comment. She lives in TN. She is against slaughter on general principles and wouldn't send her horse but isn't sure it should be banned. Let's kindly convince her.

I first learned about our Kentucky Derby winner a few years ago (Ferdinand) and knew the outrage that no one would call us and get him sent home.
Then I read about Exceller,(Horse of the year 1986) and my heart too was broken when I read how he died. He knew. and his groom was with him and gave the description that haunts me to this day.
Which makes it all the more important we make sure our beloved horses are saved S1915 and we bring HOME our Champions...They are OURS.

Just called Sen. Santorum's office (PA) and he is not a cosponsor yet, the person I talked to said that he is waiting until it comes out of committee ( he is not on the committee ) to see what the final version is. He sponsored anti-puppymill legislation and is an animal lover.

I am finding myself really looking at the horses in the old movies I watch now. I watched "Suspicion" last night with Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine and during the riding outing scene I looked at all the horses eyes and ears and listened to them snort. I do that all the time now and I see their personalities. This is because of my awareness now about the slaughter horror.

I forgot to post this but I got it Sept.15th:

    Dear Mrs. Byers:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the protection of wild horses. I
appreciate hearing from you and having the benefit of your views.

As you may know, on February 1, 2005, Representative John Sweeney of New York
introduced H.R. 503. This bill would prohibit the shipping, transportation,
moving, delivering, receiving, or selling of horses to be slaughtered for human
consumption. H.R. 503 was passed by the House of Representatives on September
7, 2006 by a vote of 263 to 146. Senator John Ensign of Nevada has introduced
similar legislation (S. 1915) in the Senate. Should the Senate consider either
    H.R. 503 or S . 1915 , I will be sure to keep your views in mind.

You may be interested to know that Senator Ensign introduced an amendment to
H.R. 2744, the Fiscal Year 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill, that would
prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to support horse slaughter for human
consumption. I was proud to vote for this amendment, which passed the Senate on
    September 21, 2005, by a vote of 68-29.

As Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee's Subcommittee on Research,
Nutrition and General Legislation, the subcommittee with jurisdiction over many
animal welfare issues, I have worked actively to support the humane treatment of
animals. You may be interested to know that I authored S. 1139, the Pet Animal
Welfare Statute (PAWS), that would increase standards for raising dogs and cats
and ensure that puppy mills are eradicated. I am also a cosponsor of S. 1110,
Engine Coolant and Antifreeze Bittering Agent Act, that would en sure o ur
children and pets are no longer susceptible to sweet tasting, but poisonous
antifreeze. I have also been a consistent advocate for Animal Welfare Act
funding and the prohibition of animal fighting through my cosponsorship of S.
382, the Animal Fighting Prohibition Act.

Thank you again for contacting me. If I can be of further assistance with this
or any other matter, please do not hesitate to call on me in the future.
    Sincerely,

    Rick Santorum

Shelly A ..get well & return to us just as soon as you are able. I trust in your guidance as we work to get S1915 passed through the Senate.

Re: McGraw....the method of MURDER is not the issue. Our horses should NOT and will NOT be MURDERED for the consumption by foreigners or anyone. Horses are not a food source. We breed them & break them to trust the human touch and then assume the responsibility to care for them for their lifetime. Just my opinion and how I care for my own furkids.

Like most of the Nation, had I not found this site while searching for Barbaro updates I would have remained naive to the issue in question....banning the slaughter. I've never really felt a purpose until now, meeting all of you, and feeling compelled to jump in. This Nation is nothing less than magnigicent and I am so proud of all of you and the difference you are making.

    Dora,
I'm sad about your turkey, too. My son-in-law's grandmother lived on a farm in IL and a wild turkey flew in and lived with her geese. One day someone (USDA? I forget which agency) knocked on her door and told her it was illegal to keep a wild bird. Don't these people have anything better to do? The turkey lived there of its own accord and could have left at any time. She couldn't even shoo it away. She loved her turkey, too.

I did some faxing this morning to the Senators and will email this afternoon. Has anyone considered a mailing blitz to Good Morning America and the Today Show, since they’ve both featured Barbaro and his ongoing recovery on their shows? If enough of us work at it, we just might be able to get the Horse Slaughter Ban Bill featured on the morning shows...which would be very powerful, I think!!! He appreciated it all too, I guess he was always hungry only getting chicken feed, so I did make his last days happier. I did not see him in Aug. while i was so sick(in Hospital etc. boyfriend lives 45 min. away) I felt guilty cause he lost weight (turkey-not the boyfriend) Thought maybe he was sad and missing me, plus no veggies/fruit.

From the FACTS that we KNOW, it seems that from the moment the killer buyers take possession of the horses, all the way to their grim deaths in a slaughterhouse, these horses are subjected, to what I consider, MORE than inhumane treatment, which I also consider unacceptable. And finally, as you say, to be used for human consumption on top of all of that, I don't see how anyone, in good conscience can think that it is a good idea on all counts. I have tried very hard to look at this question from all perpspectives, and I keep coming back around to the FACT that this is a cruel, inhumane, barbaric, and totally unacceptable practice...and that doesn't even take into consideration that it is ILLEGAL. So, anyway you slice it, it seems to me...slaughtering horses simply have no place in our world. The short answer to the entire problem is RESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP.

In Defense of Animals sent me an email this morning about a bill they are voting on in the House and trying to get slipped through the senate without anyone knowing. The Animal Terrorism Bill - they say it will hurt all people trying to help animals - if people go undercover to try to help animals and the company loses money because of that, it is considered TERRORISM! I don't understand the bill but maybe someone should look into it as they say it will hurt all animal causes including undercover work in slaughter houses. I saw yesterday someone who spoke to a senators office had that listed to be voted on TODAY.

Also the Animal Welfare Institute has great brochures that you can call and they will send them to you for free - 703 836-4300. It is about horse slaughter and tells what happens if you sell your horse at an auction, etc. I ordered some to put at all pet stores, feed stores, vets and I will give them to my horse vet. Maybe everyone can list some phone numbers on their brochures of horse rescue organizations who would be willing to have their names listed as alternatives to selling or slaughter in their area.

A few days ago ShelleyA posted a link to a horse rescue farm not far from my house (about an hr maybe) and I'm going to be going there next weekend for orientation.

I've not worked with horses before (but have always wanted to), and I am really excited to be able to help out in any way I can. If anyone from the southeastern PA/NJ/DE area is interested or want to know more about it, the website is: www.lastchanceranch.org

    ara,

Oh my, the name of my farm is Journey's End. My two beloved horses are buried in their pasture under apple trees we planted and the grave markers say, "Here my story ends. I am home and I am happy." I have goosebumps. I never heard of the Black Beauty Rescue Ranch. Thank you so much for bringing these words to my attention. They will mean even more to me now.

I'm so sorry for your loss of your turkey. A friend of mine had one wander onto his ranch about 10 years ago, and made himself right at home with his other animals, and was a beloved member of his family until he passed away earlier this year. They called him "Lurch" because he was soooo big and because of the way he walked. I hope he greets yours at the Bridge with love

There is an element of people in this world who NEED to maim and hurt "something". We humans have a certain amount of protection from "them" that the laws give us, but the animals do not and you are correct when you say thatlaws are needed for animals to protect them against these "crazies" that abound "out there".

    Today's strategy

These are our instructions for today (from yesterday's comments); seemed like a good thing to repost:

    MARILYN/CA.
Even though the bill may be up for unanimous consent, we have to keep storming them all with phone calls, right? Make sure that they know what their phone lines would continue to be like, if they stretched out the process?

Or is there a different strategy at this stage?

Well by and by, Fritz laid an egg and mom said well what do you know....it's a girl ..you can't name her Fritz. I thought and thought and said O.K. how about Fritzene? I am a Barbaromaniac and Fan of Barbaro -- I do not post here often, but I check this website at least 4 times a day. I love reading about great horses and learning more about racing. It has certainly given me a new perspective on the sport. Barbaro and the people around him have moved me profoundly. There really are NO words to adequately express the emotions evoked by this animal and his spirit.

I chuckled to read about Alex's experience of being on a runaway horse. Just the other weekend I had the same experience with my 21 year old 16.3 hand anglo-trakehner mare. She spooked at some speeding traffic and bolted. I was dodging branches and tree limbs praying I could get her stopped before the last tree's low hanging limb which surely would have been my demise. She stopped. . . I thought older animals were more sedate?

I posted this before and had no reply. Does anyone have any suggestions how can I possible locate information on the wherebouts of a retired racing TB by the name of Yogurt Man? He was at Philadelphia Park when racing.

For all those Senators and people who are against the anti-slaughter bill and who think of horses as livstock,go and view the last images of Precisionist with Michael. Tell me they are just livestock and not companion animals.

You might try posting on the TWR forums, since questions tend to get lost quickly here. Start a new discussion group and call it "Where is Yogurt Man?" That should get the attention of anyone who knows where he is, and you can explain more fully in your message. Good luck!

Thanks Marilyn for posting the Dash Movie. When Garth Brooks mom died of cancer, he was so distraught not just for himself, but for his dad as well. He worked with Gary Scruggs, Kevin Welch and John Hadley on a song called "Pushing Up Daisies" for his Scarecrow CD. The refrain says " There's two dates in time that they'll carve on your stone, and everyone knows what they mean. What's more important is the time that is known in that little dash there in between, the little dash there in between."

The Dash movie extends the meaning of those powerful words with such beautiful imagery.

Being a part of Fans of Barbaro has certainly enriched my dash far more than I could ever have imagined.

The mayor will call as was decided yesterday if there is anything that we should know so that it can be posted immediately. If there is nothing posted that means there is no news.

It is understandable that there will be questions that pop into all of our minds from time to time, but we have been asked by the mayor to keep on calling our senators and spreading the word as best we can. That is really ALL she asks us to do, because that is the ONLY thing that will save the horses.

The mayor is a lovely and gracious lady who is totally appreciative of all that is going on over here on behalf of banning horse slaughter, but it is impossible for her to respond to each and every question of ours, or to field a myriad of calls that overwhelm her office. This fight is HUGE, and one that the mayor understands only to well, and we need to HELP her by allowing her the space to do what she has to do, by not imosing upon on her time frivolously. What is going on is more senstive that one can imagine.

The mayor is working continuously and diligently to do EVERYTHING that she can, in her sphere of influence, to get the job done. And she has asked for our help and the help of many, to call our senators, and get them to co-sponsor S-1915.

Please try to appreciate just HOW difficult and uphill a battle this REALLY is. And the mayor is in the thick of it, right up there on the front lines. She has not only my admiration, my support and my prayers, but those of all of you also. She is aware of that and is deeply grateful.

As for the article in the Dallas Morning News that your post mentions..I would have to think that what they reported was correct, although, court dates can and do get changed. Indeed, when the mayor contacts I will be sure to ask and post it for you.

Cheryl Jones-Lurch would have been a very appropriate name!! My turkey DID lurch about-he too was huge, and had huge feet, thick legs, very fat, guess thats why he did not fly away. Unlike domesticated turkies, wild ones CAN fly. Ours could not or chose not.

Renee Antaya-You should have seen how our turkey wanted to "get" our dogs!! He would strut and drum and puff out and the whole nine yards. We had to fill in and cover with tall wooden boards so he could not see the dogs.He always tried to get out of pen to attack them, and they are a rottweiler mix(over 100 lbs. & lab 80 lbs.) Very comical to see him, AND hear him trying to be so mean to the dogs!!

D'Anne-I bet you had some kinda fun with your Fritz/Fritzene!! I had a cat once we were gonna call Sugar, later he/she had a little something extra "down there" so we named HIM Harry!!! LOL

Thank you for listening, I am just blabbing. You know someting sad? I have thousands of pictures of all my cats/dogs/chickens, and not one single one of my precious turkey. I do however have one long perfect feather. I will cherish it, and the memories. I will be back later guys. I seem to have forgot to do the chores, yea Pa I am coming to the washboard...

The last time I was on a horse, was a run-off.
It was several years ago ona friend's horse. Long story short, shortly after our ride started (still walking), the horse decided he wanted to go back to the stables - across town!

I ducked under trees, absolutely NO control! He was going full-board. He made it to the stable just fine, after he left me on the ground with the wind knocked out of me!

Thanks, Alex, for the interesting post this morning! I agree--there is nothing quite as heart-in-throat causing as a runaway! When I first started riding my big Qtr/Percheron cross out in the pasture, he got scared and took off with me. Now this was a big, strong fellow and it took all the strength and finesse I could muster to finally get him circled to a stop--that was the way I have been trained to control a runaway in an open area--gently, firmly pulling his head around until he is slowed in a circle. Glad he ran out of resistance just before we were to run into a dropoff!!! Yep, scary stuff--but won't trade horses for anything!!! Can you use that technique with a D-ring racing bit? It would be a little harder | would think since you use continuous (closed?) reins with race horses.
Again, thanks for the great updates and stories.

    Sheila:

Tell McGraw, that it is not a question of "either/or"...it is a question of "right & wrong,",and "good & evil."

There is no "right way" to kill a horse that has been stolen or thrown away...if there is no merciful reason to end its life.

If a horse is beyond medical help, and suffering, then the "right way" is to quickly and gently euthanize it, with its last moments being respected. These are sentient beings...quite aware of their own presence, and everything going on around them.

The WRONG way to kill a horse is in every single step in the slaughter-house scenario.

The WRONG way is and evil that must stop ASAP.

Alex, Thank you for your continued updates about our Beautiful Barbaro. I haven't posted in more than a month, but I have not given up on prayers and concern. Today's adventures at Fair Hill hit home for me. When I was ten I used to ride at field trials with our Weimeraner. One time I had a horse run away with me. He even jumped over a fence, twice, as we went around and around the club house. I was thrown over his head, landing on my back when my dad's friend stopped him by bravely reaching out and grabbing his harness as he went by. He was no race horse, so my ride, I'm sure, was safer than those this morning. I am glad to hear all are OK! Oh, I forgot to say, it ended up they thought the reason for the horse's "craze" was he had a broken bit. Scary thing to be so out of control and so vulnerable. Alex:

Great account of the run-away. Wow, even an experienced rider, such as yourself, can never underestimate, for a moment, the power of a horse. Nor their humor. No doubt, that horse thought if was "big fun" and a pretty good joke on you.

My only fall came, when I chose a different horse (Penny), from my usual reliable ride on Belle. I visited the riding stable with a "new boyfriend"....(I was only 11, and THOUGHT he was a boyfriend") Penny was much prettier than Belle, so I chose her to look good for the guy.

On the way back in, Penny decided to run for the stable, and there was no stopping her...so I just decided to "get off" ( I was too scared, and inexperienced to have the sense to stay on). So I just slipped off the back, and landed flat on my back.

When my boyfriend and the others dismounted, and came running up, I was OK...but what I did NOT know was that I had snorted a big booger out of my nose. Unbeknownst to me, it was hanging out onto my lip. He very kindly pointed it out.

So much for making a "pretty"impression.

I am so ashamed that I neglected Belle that day. For two summers, I was one of the very few people who had wanted to ride her, becauuse her face was disfigured from the misuse of a twitch.

Happy to say, though, the next summer, I was able to purchase her for $100, and take her away from that place.

After bringing Belle home, she was never made to wear a bit, or to be ridden again. Nor have I, been on a horse, since my last ride on her back. It was two days before I took her home. I was 12 years old.

    Alex---

Thank you for Barbara's Livingstans sensitive comments and the supurb link to her up to date album on the great Precisionist -- May he rest in peace -- whose life was a quiet and steadfast example of how it should be for all the horses ---and the antithesis of how it was for an equally great and beautiful chestnut TB who also didn't measure up to expectations as a stallion-- Ferdinand--- To live out their years enjoying the beauty of nature--- being part of the beauty of nature -- in the companionship of caring loving folks who accord them the dignity they deserve by just being...by just being who they are...

Best of luck to Shelley A. whose knowledge, sincerity and tireless efforts are an inspiration to us all.

Keep on keeping up the good work, Bobby---Every day in every way you are getting better and better...
    Healing thoughts and positive energy...

You were the only one to respond and give me your advice as to the letter and making additions to it. Because of your response, I was able to write an edited version of the letter and send it off to the Senators in both email and snail mail.

I loved your post of the horse named Belle
How long did she live; and what ever became of her after you brought her homne?

I also had a similar riding mishap when I was slightly older than you were. It frightened me so, despite the fact that I didn't fall off the horse. I too was a very inexperienced rider. Despite the fact that I loved horses I never had the enthusiasm to ride again after that experience.

Loved your story. Had a similar experience as a trail guide at 13 I worked 12 hours a day one summer doing everything and loving every moment. Saved $160 in a coffee can. At the end of the summer my folks let me buy the horse. Had her for four years. I started college & gave her to a good home. I really miss having a horse.

Just wanted to say Daisy's holding her own, although the chemo set her back on her heels a bit. It's not really bad like human chemo, but it has put a hitch in her gitalong.

Saw Cornyn on TV last night (So sorry, Texas). He's far more interested in the bill on detainees, but that's a done deal so now I think they've moved on to warantless wiretapping. From what I can see he's pro-waterboarding and anti-horse. Sadly, all of them, Republican and Democrat, are only thinking of how to play the game to make the other side look bad, and the election is the most important thing to them, period. So I guess threatening not to vote for them is the best we can do.

    CRR and cathy potter:

    Thanks for asking.

We were told that Belle was a GH/Welch cross. She was dark Bay with a greyish brown nose, and no white anywhere.

I always describe her as "too leggy for a pony, and too round, for a QH." She had a short back, that was nice and straight for her age. She lived at my grampa's dairy farm for four more years. The Vet thought that she was about 29 or 30 when I bought her. (I saved my $100 in a coffee can too...A&P brand)

She lived for four more years; became a very friendly, sweet girl. She was perfect in many ways...never nipped, excellent feet for her age,(grampa was fussy about her feet), loved baths and brushing, got along with the cows, and NEVER soiled her stall, (it was as though she was house trained.)

She developed a chronic cough in the spring of her last year. It got worse over the summer. Late that fall, Grampa had a talk with me. He told me what needed to be done, and that Doc Lamoreaux would be there.

One weekend, I kissed her, and said good-by after my "farm weekend" as always. The next weekend, my grampa told me that they had led Belle to the back of the pasture, and put her down there. She was ready, and he was with her. (Grampa loved her too.) They burried her there. We planted a silver maple on the spot. I was 16.

About fifteen years ago, I drove by, and looked at what I think might be the same now-old silver maple, at the edge of the field.

There is a lot of development there now, so I just want to remember it all as though the farm is still there. Saddly, even my two only photos of Belle cannot be found.

Over the years, as I grew up, I had not thought as much about Belle, as when I began to visit Barbaronation. I am greatfull that we are now so often "together again," and that now she might live a little in the corner of YOUR hearts too.

    Thanks for asking.

Thanks, Cheryl G. Daisy came from the Humane Society - a PetSmart graduate. She's not pure Persian, her face is a little less flat, but she gets the watery eyes. And her eyes are green, not copper-colored. But she's gray--gray nose, gray gums, gray all over, except when she lies on her back, she's got a little white bikini.

Otherlyn...that is such a wonderfu story about your sweet horse. Just makes me miss mine that much more. Both of mine were castoffs. My Arab/QH was "too dumb" (selectively, because she sure wasn't dumb after she knew she was loved) and my palomino QH who was "too wild". She too became an entirely different horse when she had a home with a loving family.

The ONLY time I came close to falling from her was when she was galloping and we came to a slope, she proceeded down, I started to slip, she slowed up and raised her head so I wouldn't fly off over the top of her. She would do anything to keep me from being hurt.

I had my share of unintentional dismounts by other horses, though Runaways..bucks...rears...but probably the most momentous was when a friend's stallion I was riding with a bareback pad, took off when he saw a mare coming toward us. It was like in the cartoons. I was like Wiley Coyote. Suspended in mid air until I hit the ground in a belly flop... WHUMP not pretty Thought I'd NEVER breathe again.

Glad we both lived to tell the tales :)

Sometimes working behind the scenes is even more effective...even though we are the poorer for not having access to her expertise, at this time anyway. And I am basing my opinion on what I saw to be a very passionate person who stood up for what she believed, no matter what...and for that reason I just know she is working somewhere to make a better life for out horses.

Alex, great story about Barbaro. It's encouraging news.

    ###
Re the 26 surviving horses in St. Louis - 3, including a pregnant mare, are receiving "critical care" attention at a veterinarian hospital. The pregnant mare is reportedly doing better today. 8 are well enough that they are at the MO Humane Society rescue ranch. Our local news here in St. Louis still is giving the story attention but their angle is primarily the incident itself & what will become of the horses. There's not enough exploitation of the core issue: the slaughter issue in the first place. HOWEVER, it's an excellent start and we just need to keep getting the word out there!

I'll go there and vote right now!

What a nice story, just remember Belle is always with you no matter what. Her spirit stays with you. You and she will be reunited one day. Just to give you an idea, my first greyhound Bailley crossed the rainbow bridge six years ago. The day after she died I swore I smelled her farts at work...you can laugh. Since that day it has happened a couple more times, usually at work. Can't explaine it but I know she is with me.

WOW, those photos of Protectionist are powerful. A very touching story...

Getting run away with is an awful feeling. I also had an incident when I was a kid on one of the flightier ex-track TBs where I rode running back to the barn and no way to stop him... I didn't have a boyfriend or a booger, but I was SO embarrassed in front of all those other barn kids!!! HA!

Glad to hear Chappy is doing well. I hope she likes the synthetic surface as much as the chips. Glad that to hear about Shelly A's surgery, to read about Otherlyn's Belle, and all the posts (i've had a busy week and notg otten here much! i really miss it!) And of course, as always, glad to hear ACN!!!! YAAAY Barbaro!

And to everyone working on S1915, thank you so much for the incredible effort. I got to ride yet another older TB last night, and it was so nice. This animal was neglected in that he was apparently left in a field to run around and forage, which is not a good plan. he's way under weight and out of shape. Still what a sweetie he is! He has wonderful manners, and you can tell, as you're putting him through his paces, that he's remembering what he'd learned years ago, that he's trying really hard to please. When a big storm blew through, with wild blowing winds and loud loud rain on the metal roof of the arena, it didn't bother him at all, unlike some of the other animals: I think he was just glad not to be out in it! How fortunate that he ended up in a nice neighborhood riding stable, and not elsewhere.

a lovely evening to all of you,

What a beautiful poignant story -- and what a graphic picture you paint of Belle -- your grand parents farm -- the loss of the photos...

It is almost like a short story -- It is worthy of a short story -- from the booger to the silver tree--

It brings tears to my eyes,

With all the misery and cruelty in the world there are still some lovely people; and some very tender stories.

I shall nevr forget this one!
Thank you, Otherlyn, for sharing this.

    Renee Antaya:

I sit, I read, I laugh, I cry. How WONDERFUL, that you smell those farts! Really! Sounds like Bailey had/has a silly sense of humor, and really knows how to "delight" you. Don't you just love it?

Coinsidently, and oddly enough, one thing that keeps me close to Belle, is that I can close my eyes and smell her skin. It is sweet, warm, and "horsey." This is a very strong connection. The best way I can describe it, is that it is from the area on the left side of her neck, just at that little dip before her shoulder.

I hope you continue to enjoy the smell-connection, as I do.

Life and memories are more than just thoughts. They are in our blood, in our cells, and in the spirit of everything around us. Everything that we see and touch becomes a part of us.

The beautiful part is that we can share it all. Barbaro, God, bless him, is our touchstone.

Alex, great story about Barbaro. It's encouraging news.

I told him that there were a lot of folks our here trying to get horse slaughter banned, and that they need to be trail blazers in the reporting of this...He said they were..hope it's true.

If Dr Richardson would happily accept a party after Barbaro leaves then I am sure a party is what he will get. Where do I send the ballons?
I have a mental picture of Barbaro at the next Ky Derby being led by Mr. Prado, the Jacksons, Mr Matz, Mr Brette, Dr. Richardson, and all the staff of NBC in the parade.....with Alex taking notes on what they were talking about. Yes sir, I believe I would like to see that. What a horse he is.

I am sorry for your experience with Dr. Frist's office. I am also sorry to say that it has Dr. Frist has admitted to obtaining cats under false pretenses in order to experiment on them when he was studying to be a doctor. It is well known, and one reason I wouldn't even vote for him for dogcatcher.

His quality of mercy is severely strained.

But perhaps voters letting him know how they feel might persuade him to show some kindness, for once.

"Then, I'll happily accept a party."

Just saw on ESPN, the show, PTI (Pardon the Interruption) they were laughing about the Chinese Animal Olympics and especially one of the commentators said that the animal rights activists are ridiculous, and this was simply funny. The pictures they showed were of a chimp lifting a barbell and a kangaroo with boxin gloves on. Of course they didn't show the horse boxing. URRR! The ignorance of people who are spreading this misinformation. Any suggestions on how to let ESPN know how wrong they are and what a dis-service they are doing. By the way,the one commentator also said animals are only for eating or wearing (and laughed heartily). Said he had to give credit of that quote to Charles Barkley (former NBA player).

DJoAnn, right now their ultimate fate is in question. The MO Humane Society wants custody, but they cannot locate the owner (coward that he is). I cannot imagine that they would ultimately go to the slaughterhouse - the dark side wouldn't want the negative publicity.

Donations are needed for their care, several of the horses were critically injured, including a pregnant mare.

Dear Dr. Richardson, you will have a major party when this is all done because you saved a horse whom is loved by all. You will have to say goodbye to him someday, but you will definitely be able to see him again because he will be with Gretchen and Roy at his home where he belongs. Just keep the faith. Our boy is going to be just fine. Believe in miracles, believe in Barbaro. He won't let you down. Not now, not ever.

My sweet boy: You keep beating those odds little one. You will be just fine. Your going to go home and graze on the farm with your four good legs and be very happy. Maybe later on, you'll have a little girlfriend and have beautiful baby Barbaros. Sleep tight sweetie. Grow hoof grow. Love Ya.

First thank you to Barbara Livingston for those beautiful pics of Precisionist. I knew that that photo of him with his head down against that gentlemen was probably near the end. Poor guy. He just seemed so tired and worn out. It was the humane thing to do.

I'd like to think that Fog gave similar indications to Greg. Greg always said that Fog would let him know.

Weird. I swear I heard KGO this morning at 5:45 say something about GGF tomorrow and a memorial service. That it would be in the sports section coming up. And then they never got around to it. And they were going to talk about Fog. Well, maybe KTVU will air something at 5. KGO is in San Francisco and KTVU is in Oakland. Although both are here in the Bay Area maybe the latter is considered more home.

I know I'm gonna try to make Fog's service tomorrow. I hope others will be there. Perhaps some of us can even meet if anyone is inclined to feel that way...

Now about that article the one that Dr R talks about having a party when Barbaro is released from the hospital. Now I don't want to put the cart before the horse (excuse the pun)here. Is anyone interested in having the biggest blow out party ever?!

KF, the Matz's, Mom and Dad Jackson, Dr R, and everyone from Fair Hill. Now wait a sec I'm know I'm forgetting someone...oh BARBARO!!!! Silly me. How could I ever have forgotten our precious baby. Perhaps we should also invite anyone from NBC who would like to attend.

We might have to plan for afterwards only because Barbaro getting out of the hospital will probably be one of those hush hush things--and we won't know until after it happens. Although news does travel fast and we would definitely be in the first to know.

    Good Evening, Fans of Barbaro!

TGIF...have to catch up on a lot so here goes:

Alex, love Mr. Rosenblatt's article. Thanks for posting this.
Linda A - so honored to be on your list...your friendship means a lot to me.
Marilyn, thanks for letting me be part of your dash - you are certainly part of mine - as are all of the Fans of Barbaro...:)
    J. Carson Black - good to see that Daisy is OK...prayers are on the way.
Otherlyn, your story about Belle just brought tears to my eyes.
Dora J. Crow - my sympathies for the passing of your beloved turkey.
Steve - how is BDude doing? also in my prayers
SusanW - per your Reiki request - is already out to all of you...the pic of Precisionist with Mike B typifies what the bond of horse with human is all about. For some reason, I picture LITF with Harry Aleo and Gregg Gilchrist in the last few days...there is nothing like a horse hug or earning a horse's (or cats' and dogs' or other sweet animals) trust. There is so much love showing in Barbara L's photos. And of course, there is our sweet B with Dr R...two best buds.
Sheila - be calm...if you need to vent, come here. We'll listen. And that co-worker can go to hsus.org and look at the video. 15 seconds should do it.
    Cheryl G- please don't go...we need you.
ShelleyA - glad to hear the surgery is done and that you are resting. Energy has been on the way to you all day as well as to Ima, Boxcar and Alibi.

LITF, you are greeting all those who cross the Rainbow Bridge...someday it will be my turn, my Long Time Sun. (but not yet...)

Barbaro, its nearly time to tuck you in for the night. Sleep deep and dream of the blowout party that is going to be thrown once we find out you are safe at home. We are gonna celebrate and make it one for the record books...:) Shine on you crazy diamond.

Good night, all, Take care. Tomorrow is the proverbial new day.

    Alex,

Thank you for the writings and photos of Precisionist. What a beautiful horse, and what beautiful people for taking such excellent care of him. My tears are flowing, Barbara's words were very moving.

    Rachel at KF,

I absolutely adore you! Your posts are so sweet. Thank you for all you do for us, and for Barbaro.

    Dearest Barbaro,

Have a wonderful weekend Sweet One. You are our miracle in the making. Thank you for your incredible spirit, and for never giving up. You are truly loved. You create changes for the better just by being you. Love, kisses, and may warm sunbeams shine upon you as you graze outdoors with your best buddy, Dr. R. We love him, too!

Cheryl G - besides, Dr. R has a sense of humor. I still have the video of the time Bobby tried to bite Debbye Turner (CBS) and I love Dr. R's goofy smile - he looked just like a kid in school who had been caught doing something he shouldn't have. He was proud of Barbaro the Rebel.

Now I'll bring out the big guns - Daisy wants you to stay, too. She loves talk about Persians.

The bill has become a power play issue in DC. Many politicians are trying to help us, however, the key players, in my opinion, are hanging on tight to this bill for many reasons. A few are: money going into political pockets from each horse brought to slaughter. Power and ego trips in DC amongst politicians - sad, but true. We just can't give up. Get this, I received a hand signed letter from U.S. Senator Burr. Shamefully, it stated he sponsored the bill, but nothing has been done on it since November of 2005. Now, if I am seriously missing something, the bill was recently passed and his letter astounded me to the lack of knowledge he truly has on a bill he claims to support. Regardless, I am not giving up and it is good to see others here have not either....even the politicians I know who have made calls and are helping us are just as astounded by the lack of "importance" this bill is getting by some in DC...there are deeper reasons here than we know of. I also contacted Bill O'Reilly, Greta Van Susteran and a few others who might be interested in the slaughter house situation and illegal aliens working at the plants as well - no response from them....

Especially for Sheila and other Missouri "Fans"...appreciate how several of you have kept us aware of the news on the 26 horses saved from the accident...and what we can do to help.

I already donated a small amount 2 days ago to the Humane Society of Mo for these horses. But last night when opening my mail, I had a check for a refund of an overage in my mortgage escrow account. I have NEVER received a check before...usually, it all evens out or I owe a little to the account at the end of the year. Anyway, I felt this was just too coincidental, since I had been wondering what else I could do for those horses. So I called this afternoon and donated the exact amount, $433.94. Of course we all can use "found" money, but I wasn't expecting it, and didn't NEED it. I am thrilled that I was in a position where I could gratefully pass it on. AND I HOPE THAT ANY "FAN OF BARBARO" WHO FEELS THEY CANNOT DONATE $$ RIGHT NOW WILL CONSIDER THEMSELVES TO HAVE GIVEN PART OF THIS DONATION! The lady I spoke with said they have talked to a lot of Fans of Barbaro and this must be a great group. I told her yes, they are all amazing.

Just wanted to say again that I really think there are a lot of people who do much that we don't even know about, in $$, anti-slaughter work, rescue/rehab work, and in thoughts and prayers. I only mention my donation because I want you to know that you can each have an impact on what others are inspired to do, even if you aren't aware at the time.

Barbaro, you are the cornerstone of the inspiration! And we will keep working till there is no slaughter to be feared for any of your brothers and sisters. Love and peace to you all...

Sally in Key West-my boyfriend rescued a wild turkey from some folks who mistreated him. We had him for most of this year. He was already really old, at least thats what my bf said. He was reallt fat and had big feet and big ole toes but he was really nice. He had a cool red, white and blue head and neck and googly thing that hung down from his neck. You could pet him anywhere, really sweet. I will really miss him. He liked me better than Louie, i always brought him squash and apples and tomatoes and cabbsage-he loved all veggies and fruit and bread. Thanks for thinking of me.

The pictures of Percisionist are beautiful. What a dignified horse. It looks like he had a great place to live in Florida and was treated with respect. Isn't that the same area of Florida were Fog was born?

I received a nice picture of Fog today and a sweet card from the lady who cares for the donor horses at NBC.

Loved the article about Barbaro. What a difficult decision and stressful time they have all been through... yes, B is quite the fighter!

    Love the squeal!

Oh, Fellow Fan of Barbaro! I am so appreciative of your gesture to donate your "found" money to the horses saved here in Missouri. What a generous and heartfelt action you took on behalf of us all.

I am so in awe of all of the people here. I feel so proud to be a part of this, words just cannot express how wonderful I think you all are.

To those of you who have contributed in other ways: faxing, emailing, passing out flyers, talking to people about this issue in general, and our accident here, thank you for fighting for the animals.

You guys are just the absolute best.

If I am on the internet (as on this site) I can only print ONE THING (picture, page, whatever) each time my computer is turned on. If I want two THINGS, I have to, No, not RESTART, but, yes, SHUT DOWN this damn thing, wait a few minutes, then turn it on again.

Well, I used my ONE THING to get a print-out of a picture from msn.com "Week in Pictures" of a young girl comforting one of the injured horses from the slaughterhouse truck accident in MO. The picture is so telling . . . the girl's head gently leaning against the horse's neck, her hands touching him so tenderly, the kind of touch he probably hasn't felt in a long, long time, - but it's her closed eyes and loving face and, in turn, his closed eyes and relaxed face, that say what words will never be able to. I'm not sorry I printed it.

BUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTT, of course when I tried to print Jazz's hilarious post, this machine went haywire and threw me into a time of crisis.

So I took Jazz's advice, pooped, and I guess I'll have to take my stinkin' butt home now......

Hi Everyone! TGIF! I've promised myself EVERY night this week I'd go to bed at a decent hour and EVERY night I've been catching up on posts here and sending slaughter bill emails until midnight (and then up at 5am) so glad I can "sleep in" tomorrow.

I just wanted to let you know I spoke with a gal today at one of the 4 vet clinics in Missouri that have taken in the injured horses from the terrible truck accident Wed. morning. I was able to secure some product donations from several manufacturers for them today. This clinic has most of the horses with the worst leg injuries, so they are going through bandaging materials and cohesive wrap like crazy! They are making sure donated product gets split up amongst all 4 of the clinics caring for the horses, so it's a great team effort.

She also told me that the horse rescue team (which is separate from, but works with the MO Humane Society) had most of their equipment destroyed just trying to save animals the other night since it was such a terrible accident. I told her about the TWR website and asked her to email me details about the rescue group, including how we might help out with donations, etc. Haven't gotten that letter yet, but will certainly post when I do.

It's been an eye-opener for me talking to so many people in the animal industry today who were completely unaware of the slaughter industry. I've emailed them all details of this wreck and mentioned the pending legislation, so again--this terrible tragedy has served a greater purpose. And where did I first hear about the accident--on a post right here, of course!

After seeing so much horrible news about animals--the Chinese "Olympics" story being one--and thinking about all those injured horses, it is so wonderful to be able to log on to TWR and remember how many DECENT people are out there! Thanks fellow FOBs! Have a safe weekend, everybody! And you, too, Barbaro--sweet strong boy.

Your news is troubling for sure..and it is not surprising because there are many laws already in place that make just about everything TERRORISM. So, this is just one more thing along those lines, and I think we SHOULD give it a LOT of attention and find out more about it. Surely, we agree that helping animals, or people either one, whether they are undercover, or out in the open, is a good thing and shouldn't be condemned by the powers that be. I will not call HELPING, under any circumstances, terrorism. While we are busy trying to get horse slaughter banned the govt. is trying to pass a bill that would certainly not be helpful to our cause. This is cause for concern and further research.

A horse squealing is perculiar sound only to horses. Horses will squeal when your saddling, their feeling really good and are impatient. Stallions will squeal if they get to near each other. I'm sorry I don't know how to articulate it better. But I guarantee you that once you hear it you'll never forget it and you'll know what it is in a heartbeat.

It's not a snort and its not a whinny. And its not even a sound in between both of those.

Barbaro was just telling MM that he felt good and he wanted out of his stall! Now!

Alex if you ever turn a video camera on one of the horses in Tim's barn--could you get a sound bite please? Just so the rest of these good folk know what a squeal is?!!! You can even send me the video and I'll try to cut out the audio. (forgive me I'm tooting my horn trying to keep up with you...which will never happen in this life.

Not sure what there gonna do when Barbaro starts needing 3 or 4 people to hold him...But in a way that would be great. He'd just be telling everyone how good he felt.

For those going to Fog's service tomorrow--it'll be foggy. I know the rest of you are wondering what the heck. I mean the Fog's in--its all cloudy. And damp. It won't be much over 60 degrees. Might be good to bring a light jacket or sweater just in case. Kinda appropriate weather considering Fog.

And not one word on KTVU about Fog's service tomorrow. And they've even interviewed Russel Baze (with Fog in the background--you can see this at KTVU.com). But the rest of know and we'll be there for Mr. Aleo and Greg.

A hauntingly beautiful image--just so sad that the "X" marking the horse to indicate it has been treated reminds me so much of the "X" markings on houses that were checked for survivors after Katrina.

Thanks Alex for posting the article from the Twin Cities, "Barbaro and Inspiration on and off the Track." The comments made by Dr. Richardson and by his owners about the grit of this horse and his will to live is so touching and heartwarming. After shedding so many tears of grief and sorrow over the horses who recently past away and then the delay in the Horse Slaughter Act, reading more positive news on Barbaro bring me tears of joy. There has always been something magical about this horse, as so many of us continue to follow his recovery process and believe in him. His saga has propelled all of us on this site to forge ahead and fight for all his brethren in this country. Whatever happens, and hopefully he will survive, Barbaro will hold a very special place not just as a Derby winner, but as an inspiration that has brought out the best in us.

DEB. If you haven't found anything on Yougurt man: You can try to find him by using past performances. You will see the last time he ran, where, his trainer, owner and his jockey. You may have to call some of these people to track him down. If you try this go to Equibase.com then click Other products then Info by horse then Life PP. It costs about 8$ for a copy of past performances. Maybe there is an easier way than this..let me know if you find him. Good luck!!

Thank you to those of you who responded to my inqury about Yogurt Man -- I posted on the TB site. I will let you know if I learn anything. Since you all are horse lovers, I should share his story.

I was massaging horses at the race tracks in the early 1990's, and Yogurt Man was one of my "patients." I only ever worked on him once, but it was such an incredible experience, his essence has been burned into my heart. The trainer asked me to work on him because he had suffered an injury in his hindquarters. He was a stakes winner. At that point he must have been around 5 years old -- a small TB, probably around 15.2 or 15.3 When I entered his stall, he was standing with his rump toward me, his head hanging dejectedly in the corner. I began to talk to him -- no reaction at all. Once I was certain he would allow me to approach him and touch him, I began the bodywork. He was essentially unresponsive until I started working on his hindquarters. The scar tissue from his injury crackled under the skin like tissue paper. Eventually I moved to his rear and started to apply pressure to the point of his buttocks with my elbow. This elicited a response and Yogurt Man began to lean against me. I was between his hind legs and the wall. I braced and continued to apply the pressure, and he nearly sat on me. I continued the pressure and vowed to do so as long as I could and wasn't in any danger. Eventually Yogurt Man stood up and moved away from the pressure. I did a little more bodywork on a much brighter, more responsive animal. When I stepped away from him at the end, he walked over to me, snuffed into my hands, and laid his head in my arms. I was moved to tears. I left this magnificent animal and never crossed his path again. He would be 18 now, and I would love to know if he is still alive -- if so, where he is and how he is spending his later years.

At the BLACK BEAUTY RESCUE RANCH IN TEXAS
Enshrined above the entrance gate are these words:

"I have nothing to fear, and here my story ends. My troubles are all over, and I am home."

My friends, this is what we are working so hard to accomplish for ALL horses. Let us keep on until we succeed so that EVERY horse can be afforded a life devoid of fear...where trouble is left far behind..where their stories can end in peace and dignity, as the saying above implies.

Father, thank you for the "Miracle of Barbaro".

My "Eternal Horse" Lost in the Fog: May you run and play in our Father's Kingdom with your "horsey" friends that were waiting for you and may all of you welcome the "new" friends that have also crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.
    I miss you so much.

Father, thank you for giving us Foggy's presence for the short time that he was here.

Father, please send positive healing to Mike Rea, little Erin, and the horses that were rescued from the accident this week.

Please Father, spare these magnificent horses from the terrible fate that they were about to face.

Barbaro Team:>) Hope everyone one has a night filled with peace and rest. May you wake to a beautiful morning that will lead to a glorious

Mary S., Thanks for posting "A Message from the Jacksons." How kind of them to do that for national publication!

Very encouraging words of how they have felt, especially saying that they "have witnessed a powerful interest in all activities that support the welfare of the horse." We don't want to let them or Barbaro down. We will persevere and carry on, just as Barbaro and they do, one day at a time, for a better future for all.

Sweet Barbaro, I had almost forgotten how sweet the sound of a totally gleeful squeal could be.

In order to let my mare out into the pasture, I had to take her through my gelding's stall. I would lead her from her stall through his and she would prance in anticipation of her freedom. She would pause in the stall door, every muscle tense and rippling and then she would burst out of the door as if it were a starting gate (she had never been in a starting gate in her life).
Bedding and stall pads would go flying and she would gallup and buck and squeal to the farthest corner of the pasture, come to a sliding stop and turn around in her most regal head-up manner and let out such a snort that echoed throughout the entire valley.

She was louder than any stallion I ever heard. It was a daily ritual that I loved and almost forgot about until now.

Enjoy your mini bucks and squeals Barbaro, rest and dream of romps in lush green pastures. Grow that hoof and it will soon come to be. Butterfly kisses big guy. Sweet dreams!!

When I saw your post last night I wondered what the incredible experience was. That is a neat story about him. It sounds like he is pretty special, I hope you find him.

Good Night Fellow "fans of Barbaro"

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy reading all about the horses in your lives.

Deb - hope you are able to locate Yogurt Man.

Rosemary - loved reading about your mare.

Everyone adds something to this site and I appreciate each and every one of you.

I do know that the 3 horse slaughterhouses in our country will close. The strength, determination and commitment shown by so many here will make it happen. What a celebration we're going to have when that day comes. I pray it is soon.

Robyn Huffman & Sherry--Thanks for the kind words. It means a lot right now. My dad and sisters and even my boyfriend really dont seem to care that I am upset.Well-then again all you guys understand better anyway. Sherry-my middle name is Jean, what was your moms? Sorry for you not having her with you, I do not have a mom anymore either.

Pat in Az--You know what is seriously gross? Once we got baby chicks and raised them, I started feeling guilty eating chicken. Now chicken is my all time FAVORITE food besides chocolate or Italian. I cannot give it up. (sorry if this offends thee) I will still eat it, and fish. I do not like red meat, but will eat venison. We used to have pet goats, everyone wanted to buy them to eat!!I was like OMG people eat goats!! We made sure they went to a farmer with children with other goats when we sold them. My boyfriend still checks on them. I REALLY miss their crazy selves!! I do not miss them getting out though!! Pet Nanny could jump a 6 ft. fence like a deer, and off she would go, then we would have to drag her back--bad thing for bad backs...

WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE GET THE ANTI-SLAUGHTER BILL PASSED THIS SESSION. If the animal terrorism bill gets passed first, and the Senate continues to delay the slaughter ban, the animal terrorism bill could really screw us up. Supposedly it's to protect food production, but it's very, very broad. For example, it will put the kibosh on thoroughly investigation puppy mills. It will be much, much harder to get accurate inside info on the slaughter houses for fear of prosecution. I'm sure certain Senators know that, and that's why they put a hold on the slaughter ban--to pass the other bill first.

KEEP UP THE CALLS, FAXES, ETC. AND LET THEM KNOW WE'RE ONTO THEM AND WE'RE NOT GIVING UP.

And you, Barbaro - you're the most beautiful thing in all the world, inside and out. You are such a brave boy - keep on and be patient. You're getting there and we are here for you always. All love and prayers and XXXX and OOOO.

Thank you, thank you for saying that because it is all too true. And we have to be very mindful of the animal terrorism bill which I am as opposed to as I am allowing horse slaughter. But our fight is VERY far from over, and I hope that we can stay focused for the long haul. We are going to have to fight and fight hard. We can rest later, but not now. Keep us posted on the animal terrorism developments as we must be vigilant.
