    Barbaro Update: 100

    updates are now here.

Update 815: Peter just called, and he is on his way over to visit Barbaro. Once he has visited I will endevour to get an update.

Update 814: Still no update. I just spoke to Michael (10 am) and he still had not heard. Since we operate under the notion that no news is good news, there is no concern. Of course when I do get an update (will call Peter later) I will post it. I did speak to someone from New Bolton about the possibility of an interview with someone there. I think that is my next interview project.

Update 813: No update yet this morning. I saw Michael Matz as they were returning from the track. Michael had not yet heard from Dr. Richardson (not unusual for the time I saw Michael). Michael did mention Barbaro was well yesterday evening. It will be a few hours now until I do get an update, probably around 10:30 ish. In the meantime, here is an update on Stephanie's (Miracle Horse Rescue) work via Michelle: IN HONOR OF BARBARO RESCUE CHALLENGE.

Update 812: Another Barbaro article, this one the October edition of the Mid Atlantic Horse: Barbaro's Road to Recovery. Some nice pictures too. Cheryl (comments timestamp: 2:58 AM) highlights some of the material from the article. This is pretty funny:

"He's a public figure now," said Richarson, who also has become something of a media celebrity himself. Apparently word leaked out that Richardson was taking dancing lessons. Next thing he knew he was invited to dance on ABC's Dancing with the Stars, much to the mirth of Matz and Richarson's colleagues at New Bolton."

The Barbaro update should again be around 8 am.

Update 811: If you are reading this, we are live with the new dedicated server!

And more importantly, another comfortable day for Barbaro. I just spoke to Peter Brette (6:45 pm), who had heard from Michael, who visited Barbaro as usual. Barbaro did also get out to graze.

Update 810: Off to the dentist, shutting the comments down during the visit (see update 808 for an explanation). In the meantime enjoy the article in update 809.

Update 809: A great article from the UPenn Bellwether: How New Bolton Center Staff Joined Forces to Help Barbaro. It really details pretty much everything that has occured thus far.

Good afternoon Barbaro, I hope the new cast is comfortable, no pinchy toes and your hoof is growing, growing, growing. You are an incredible horse. Never mind Horse of the Year, I think you should be Athlete of the Year. You show everyone daily what it means to be the commsumate athlete in all the best sense of the word!!!! Butterfly kisses big guy!!!

Please pass on the petition for Mike Rea's home makeover to all your friends. How many times have you responded to others requests. Now it is time to ask a favor. Mike needs this badly. Forward to ten friends and have them forward to ten and on and on. We can do this for Mike. I can think of no one more deserving of this than Mike!!!!!!

    ####
So much for the beautiful Ohio weather, wind and rain and cold moving in, culminating in Friday's predicted sleet storm. Now all you Florida and Arizona people can laugh at those of us with four seasons!!!!

    ####
Alex, I am glad the board is up again. You and Tim are so good to us. It is all so greatly appreciated.

    ####

If you are sponsoring a MO horse, please go to the discussion board marked Horsey Mommies and tell us who you are sponsoring so we can see if any horse needs more sponsorship. Thanks.

    FOB's have a great day!!!!

    Rosemarie,

It is an eerie site to see yet another NYC highrise building with flames coming out of it. A plane no less. Must be very disquieting for all New Yorkers. I hope it is just a terrible, terrible accident and nothing more, nevertheless, another tragedy to those who live in the condos and those on the street.

Keep us posted from a NYC point of view.

Anyone up for a Barbaro vigil tonight a 7pm EST ?

We need to get Bobby back over 1,000 candles.

Please light a candle at that time, and or stop and send positive energy to Bobby - miracles happen every day and Bobby is one.

I don't believe it is anything but a terrible accident. As a precaution they have put a flight restriction around that area, but there is no indication of bad intent.

Glad to see another good Barbaro report. All clear sailing from now on. Time Time Time is our greatest ally. All the national press our boy is getting is wonderful now, too.

    ############

Have contacted the Northern (Demotte IN) branch of Indiana Horse Rescue, seems they're only 20 miles from where Blackie lives, so I'm gonna start going there to see what I can do to help. Will keep you all advised. (I think this is where survivors are from the severely neglected herd.) Once I make contacts there I will try to see what FOB's can do to help this Rescue with the Shipshewana auctions as well.

Thank you Alex for posting the Bellwether article. This is a must read to be copied for everyone's scrapbooks. What a comprehensive telling of Barbaro's most incredible journey. New Yorkers, are you all out there? Are you okay? I cannot imagine how frightening this must be, at least at first.

My kitty Felix is still not doing well. Diabetes has been ruled out but many other bad possibilities remain. Lab work will be back tomorrow. He is not using his right rear leg at all and is having trouble with his left rear. He is confused and frustrated and fearful and so am I. I had a great conversation with Senator Landrieu's animal welfare aide today.

Horse slaughter prevention is a VERY high priority for Senator Landrieu. After the recess, she may try to bring the bill to the floor by unanimous consent. But it is expected that there will be an objection, and it will still come down to Senator Frist's discretion. So she will urge Senator Frist to bring the bill up before the Senate adjourns. Senator Frist decides on these matters along with the Majority Whip, Senator McConnell.

Senator Landrieu will also be calling on all the senators, by letter, to co-sponsor the bill, with a goal of 60 co-sponsors.

So you can see the pieces falling into place.....contacting the "Big Six", including Senators Frist, McConnell, and Landrieu; and still contacting our own senators to co-sponsor. Our senators need to REMEMBER our calls when Senator Landrieu asks them to co-sponsor!!

Our voices ARE being heard. We must keep this going for the next few weeks in order to be successful.

Precious Barbaro: Another comfortable night....our Father loves you so much. May He give you a glorious day of grazing, sunshine, blue skies and gentle breezes. Father, praying and believing that You will lend Barbaro to us for many, many years. May He never lose the determination or the fight to live that we can see his beautiful eyes.
Father, thank you for the "Miracle of Barbaro".

Lost in the Fog: My heavenly "horse angel"...missing you and loving you so much. You will never hurt again because our Father allows no "bad things" to go on in His Heavenly Kingdom.
Father, thank you for my Lost in the Fog.

Barbaro Team: Hope your enjoying your day....may you have a pleasant afternoon. God bless you and yours.

Alex: Thanks to you and Tim for allowing the "Barbaro Family" to come together for our Precious Barbaro on Tim's website.

Candles are lit for my precious friends, "horsey" friends and our precious pets.

UPDATE ON MY GRANDBABY "KYKIE": My baby was released from the hospital late Tuesday evening. She is doing well but she tires easily which is one of the side effects of this disease called "Kawasaki's Disease".....very uncommon here in the United States. It is a virus that attacks the blood vessels in the body. She will have to see her doctor for follow-up visits to make sure that the blood vessels in her heart were not damaged as this would cause her to get complications later in life.

Once again, my son, my daughter-in-law and I wish to thank you for all your prayers and candles. I'm so glad you guys were with me at this "moment in time".

Pit bull mauls three horses at farm in Maryland
(10/11/06 - FREDERICK, MD) - At least one dog mauled three horses at a farm, and the most severely injured, a miniature foal, may not survive, authorities and the horses' owner said.

A loose pit bull was captured in the rural area after the attack, and its owners had not claimed it by Tuesday evening, animal control director Harold Domer said. If no owner comes forward after five days, the dog would become county property and could be deemed potentially dangerous.

A trap was set for another dog, a collie mix, that may have been involved, Domer said.

Horse owner Karin Walden said the 5-month-old foal, named Dot, had bites and puncture wounds on three legs and a deep gash in its belly that could not be sutured because of swelling and the possible presence of bacteria.

The other two horses were treated with antibiotics.

Update 806: A nice article in the USA Today: Against all odds, Barbaro perseveres, it also includes some new pictures.

This was a good article, nice pictures. Barbaro on the scale my favorite. What a beauty he is. And Dr. Richardson doesn't hurt my eyes either. (Sorry Mrs. Richardson you have a keeper.)

Thanks to the Jacksons for loving horses the way they do. We will never be able to say that you didn't give our boy all the chances he deserves. I know if I was in your shoes and Barbaro's shoes I would be doing all I could.

Keep on Keeping on. I so admire all; the Jackson's, Dr. Richardson, all Caregivers, including Mike and Peter, Alex, Tim, and anyone else I didn't think of. If you are taking care of our horse I admire you. As a matter of fact does anyone of you have a stable out back for me. I know you would take care of me very well and very well indeed. By the way, stable life is great just think of how Jesus came into the world.

You were worried about the six horses in a trailer that you saw...There are people who transport horses for a living..If you have a horse you want moved to AZ because you're moving there, you can hire people to come pick them up, load them onto a trailer and they will take them there. On the way to AZ, they may pick up other horses, drop other horses off for other owners...This could be what you saw...

Susan E. I'm praying for Felix. I hope the lab tests come out great and it is something treatable, and he will soon be his old self again.

    ###

As much as the vet wanted to save her (he had her home with him for two nights) it appeared that it would only get worse for Daisy, as it was not lymphoma (treatable) but a worse kind of cancer. She was still purring and liked her chin rubbed, although she couldn't eat or drink. So we held her and petted her and she went very quietly to sleep. My mom, I, and the vet were all crying.

Everyone there was so wonderful - they all loved Daisy. And everyone here has been wonderful, too.

Animals are lucky in that they can go before they really, truly suffer. I know we did the right thing, but needless to say, it's been a horrible day. I drove up to the top of the mountain outside of town and just walked around.

##Jake, My heart goes out to you. So sorry to hear about Daisy. But, you gave her the greatest gift of all, to let her go with dignity, I think you know that. It is the very hardest for those of us left behind. Afterward, there is almost a great wave of relief that comes over you, one of peace and the realization that they will never leave us, only in the physical sense, but will never be any further away than your next thought of them. I have been through this so many times having bred goldens for 35 years. Eadh day gets a little easier and you will find yourself smiling when thinking of Daisy. I will look for her star on my walk tonight. I know it will be the brightest one in the sky. Take good care.

Bobby, you are our miracle as so many have said so many times. I hope one day I will get to meet you as you have been in my thoughts every single hour of every day since your injury Alex, you continue to be the best. Thank you.

Jake I am so sorry My love to you and your mom and all your family

These tiny little babies take such a huge part of us with them when they leave us. But the love endures. She will be in your hearts forever. She'll have many of my kitty babies to welcome her at the Bridge, who will be happy to share warm sunshine and sweet breezes with her until you are ready to be reunited. If you close your eyes, you will see her lying contently, those warm soft breezes gently ruffling her hair, tail flicking every so slightly. If you listen when it's very quiet, you'll hear her purring.

    Jake,

I am so very sorry. I have been there, holding my little furry children when they have passed, most recently my boy Sam. Rest easy knowing she knew you were there, knew how much she is loved and as everyone says, she will be waiting for you.

She will always be with you, a love like that never ends. Never. I truly believe that kind of love takes on a different form when a loved one leaves us, be it human or animal. When it is quiet, listen. You'll hear her in the whisper of the wind on the trees, the flutter of birds outside, the gentle falling of rain. For all things beautiful, she is there, right with you, always at your side, until you meet again.

    Candles for the horses

I hope I'm not stepping on the toes of the person who started this group by mentioning it -- I don't remember who it was -- but there is a candle group called "HORSE", and it was started by one of us, for all of the horses who are injured and euthanized on the track. Lately, I've been using it for the slaughtered horses and to express my hopes for S. 1915; and I see some others are doing the same thing. There are usually only a few dozen candles lit. Maybe some of the rest of you would like to join in.

Again, I hope this does not upset the person who started the group for the track injuries. If it does, please speak up and we can start a different group.

Jake and family I am so sorry for your loss of Daisy, here is the poem "The Rainbow Bridge" I found once and have kept to help me through difficult times such as this:
    The Rainbow Bridge
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this gold land, they wait and they play.
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed.
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For at that instant, their eyes have met:
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past.
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over....together

Great articles on Barbaro, our boy. Thanks Alex. Hope you did o.k. at the dentist. It is a little intimidating. They make a big production out of it when you go into the dental office. They are always smiling too muchand prepare their little tray like they are going to do a heart transplant. Tipping you upside down doesn't help either. Glad you survived. Thanks alot

Good evening, Barbaro, horse of forever! On the front page of USA Today? On the ABC evening news? What's next? Anything is possible, eh?

Another Stan parent here - glad to hear he's doing well enough to graze and I'll check out the video again tomorrow at work (dial-up here at home!).

Jake - my condolences to you and your mom. Daisy had the best people in the world. We can tell from the way you wrote about her. She's up there with my Margot now..she's in good paws.

    Dear Jake and your mom,

I know exactly how you feel. My husband & I stayed with our precious cairn terrier, Pepper, as he was sent to cross rainbow bridge. That was almost 4 years ago & I still have a hard time dealing with it. Please find comfort in the fact that others are feeling your pain and wish we could do more to console you.

Jake, I came online hoping that all was well with Daisy. like the other animal lovers here the tears flowed when I read the news. I pray that you and your mom find some comfort in the peace she experienced in the end and the fact that she was so obviously loved for 20 years.

Barbaro, your ACN's feel like a hug, specially when I read things that make me sad. Keep inspiring us champ

You incredible, wonderful people! I am just crying my eyes out, reading one beautiful letter of condolence after another. What a powerful gift. I'm sure over the Rainbow Bridge Daisy is hearing all the glowing, wonderful things about her.

It's a good thing I got a new printer, because I'm going to print this up and keep it. Reading it just now was a catharsis. We've all been there, but the outpouring of love is unbelievable.

When I figure out how to post a picture of Daisy, I will. Might be the weekend.

So many beautiful expressions of what I feel. The sun and the breeze and the shadow. She probably even has a Command Control Center where she watches over her food. She was a character.

This is strange. We have another cat, Allie, who did this once yesterday and once today: she pulled the tablecloth up around her food at Command Control, just as Daisy used to. That was Daisy's trademark, and now Allie's doing it.

Friar Tuck - crying as I was, I cracked up when I knew the whole forest was sending us condolences.

You are great people. And you've made me feel so much better. I'm going to go print this up!

    Love,
    Jake

    Dear Jake,

Like Janice from Florida said there are no magic words for your loss. Just keep Daisy close to your heart and remember all the great times you had together. I lost both my boy dogs six months apart(3years now)and keep pictures in my wallet, in my bedroom and here in my jewerly studio. Somehow seeing those happy fuzzy faces make the pain seem less, but it doesn't completely go away. I will be thinking about you, your Mom and the Vet.

That is so interesting about Allie. I have noticed that when a person passes on, the survivors tend to try to perpetuate the things that the person left in the world -- to take on as their own certain habits, hobbies, customs, etc., so that they will not be lost. Hearing about Allie makes me think that maybe this is not just a human trait.

Glad to hear that your granddaughter is home. Just wanted you to know that my son had Kawasaki's disease when he was two. He's 25 now and healthy--I almost said as a horse! He took baby aspirin as 'blood thinner' and had frequent cardiac ultrasounds but, thank God, he had no complications. I used it as an excuse to steer him toward computers and singing instead of playing football :) emil/ml

Yes, a wonderful article from UPenn Bellwether but they omitted one very important person when they spoke about the "special" visitors for our guy. They mentioned the Jacksons, Michael, Edgar, Governor Rendell but what about Barbaro's other most loyal, special friend, who visits Barbaro religiously and has stuck by him through thick and thin? I speak about our own special...

I am so sorry your beloved Daisy couldn't stay longer. But I'm also grateful she had so many years to love and be loved by good people who always did their best for her. I wish all animals could claim that. Daisy will be with you every time you climb a mountain, or write, or when you just wake up and feel her paw on your face...

    JEANNETTE,

I just read about your grandbaby. Sweetie, this has been a tough week for you. We are all here for you and little Kykie. Medicine can do wonders. And we all know positive thoughts, prayers, white light, faith, whatever spiritual force moves you--can heal. Heal, Kykie, heal!

    TO ALL MY CYBER FAMILY:

I am overwhelmed and grateful for your love and support as Felix fights his fight. We still don't know what is wrong, but he isn't talking or rumbling and he can barely walk on three legs. We hope to know more tomorrow. Lizzie is watching over her brothercat as I type this. He doesn't want to be held, and that hurts to see.
I hope to have the wisdom to make the right decisions for him.

Cloud should be coming home tomorrow, I think. It is encouraging to read we've picked up more sponsors on SB 1915. And to learn than Conrad the Mustang Killer is getting exposed.

A friend emailed me today, excited at Bobby's USA today front page spread. We believe. We will always believe. I believe in a lot more mysterious things now than I did 5 months ago.

Sorry if I am rude and have not read the posts tonite...been away....to those going thru bad spots in their life...love and prayers...

To Debbie.....please tell me what Debbie you are....I read tons of words, but sometimes do not always place the "Debbie" in the right state....I embrace what you said about Bernardini...I stand corrected...cause horse racing will always go forward...I did not mean to offend...and after MY smoke cleared, I realized you spoke the truth...we always hold on to what we believe would happen...and that is not what life is about...My support will go to the horse that can win...and Bernardino may do that...and I can be relentless on what could have been...geez, must be getting older...I will never slam Bernardini again...CAUSE I THOUGHT HE WON AND BARBARO DID NOT....

I have learned the only thing in life THAT IS CONSTANT...is change...I embrace that....I vented that nite...and it is over....Barbaro has given all of us more than we ever imagined...that is the one miracle...other miracles are horse as being saved...so much money has been donated and the awareness is crucial...Yes, Barbaro has accomplished that thru us...

I have moved on....ya know, if some other horse had won race when Barbaro was injured...the focus would have been on that horse....human thing I guess...

I am so pleased that the tracts have changed for the good to save God's special horses....

I apprecite your words Sally...but I am goina have to realize history moves forward and we must glory in that...I am not crumbing...just trying to be in the main stream...we all have our thoughts...Lord, knows I vented....

God's speed, wisdom, and protection for all the beasties that race...

I know you read all this Sally...but I hope Debbie reads this to understand....I do understand and accept it...

Continued healing and protection for Bobby...he has changed so much in the racing world...that is, indeed his legacy...and a fine one at that...

Sweet dreams to Barbaro and to all of you....

    Alex,
I don't know if this was already posted somewhere, but if you can get your hands on the October issue of Mid-Atlantic Horse, there is a fantastic article on OUR BOY! Some photos that I've never seen before are included along with some info I haven't read anywhere else. It is written by David Yeats-Thomas & here are a few of the great excerpts from the article:

"Barbaro's coat is shiny and his eyes are bright and there's certainly nothing wrong with his appetite. As Richarson spoke, Barbaro munched grass continuously, looking up only occasionally to prick his ears at some cows that were grazing in the next field. Apparently he's made friends with one of the cows, a brown Swiss named Mocha who plods over once in a while and touches muzzles with Barbaro."

"Nor has Barbaro lost his legendary crankiness. Richardson, who is one of only three people allowed to take Barbaro out for a daily half hour of grazing warns people not to get too close. Even his trainer, Michael Matz, one of the other two people who take Barbaro out to graze, has to watch his step. When Matz, who was visiting at the time, moved closer to Barbaro for the photographer, he put his hand on the horse's shoulder. Barbaro's head shot up and his ears went back in warning. Obviously Matz, who knows Barbaro as well as anyone, must have said or done something to irritate the winner of the Kentucky Derby." (There is a GREAT photo of this too, showing a very-annoyed-looking Barbaro with Dr. Richardson & Michael Matz wearing big smiles!)

Mid-Atlantic Horse has great Barbaro coverage every month. Enjoy!

Thanks Cheryl..what month is that article in mid-atlantic? Could you imagine Dr. R. on dancing with the stars? I hope not, he is way too valuable at NBC. In fact, I think we all love B so much because all of the people surrounding him have such class. No one has been a sell out. Everyone just loves the horse and is not in it for themselves.

Does anyone know how we can get a hard copy of the U-Penn article?

I love it, Dr. Richardson takes dance lessons, a man after my own heart. Dance on, dance on!!!

And oh by the way the author's interpretation of "crankiness" could simply be a high energy horse sowing his oats after being cooped up in a stall with a cast on one leg and a bandage and boot on the other. I also have heard him described as personable and engaging.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I know how much it hurts right now . . . and it won't get any easier for a while. I went through it a year ago with my dog Bo and I still cry over him. You will miss Daisy. You will know that you did everything that you could for her. You will remember all of the wonderful days you had together. You will have a very sad space inside you. You will find its easier some days to think of her and some days thinking of her will make you cry. You have lost a loved one. Not a pet, a friend, a companion, a confidant, someone to talk to, someone to laugh with, someone who was always there for you. I know your pain, but understand that you have that pain because of your love for Daisy - and hers for you. It hurts so much because Daisy was so lucky to have had her life with you. You're not alone - we're all crying too.

I HOPE THAT WAS A JOKE ABOUT DR. DEAN BEING ON DANCING WITH THE STARS!!??? I AGREE WITH MARY 150% ABOUT WHY PEOPLE LOVE BARBARO SO MUCH. MICHAEL MATZ IS PRACTICALLY A SAINT, PETER IS A HUGE SWEETHEART, THE JACKSON'S ARE WONDERFUL, HONEST PEOPLE WHO DEFINITELY GIVE HORSE RACING A GREAT NAME. DR DEAN, WELL-- MANY OF US HAVE HAD OUR TIFFS ABOUT HIM ON THIS SITE, DUE TO SOME OF US GALS LUSTING FOR HIM-- HOWEVER, IF HE LEAVES BARBARO, I WILL BE REALLY UPSET AND CROSS HIM OFF MY VOTE FOR SEXIEST MAN OF THE YEAR!!!(KIDDING) I DON'T THINK HE WOULD DO THAT TO THE JACKSON'S THOUGH.

I agree with your construction of "crankiness". Were I in Bobby's horseshoes, I'm sure I'd have done some serious kicking of heinies by now. This is the horse for whom the nurses line up peppermints on the edge of his stall; the horse that has "endeared himself to everyone". The horse that has brought Dr. Dean to the verge of tears and to heights of near-giddiness in the ol' paddock. Also the horse who tried to snack on Miss America's fingers (tastes like chicken), but I feel that was justified on his part since she failed to bring treats.

On that note, Bobby, my Velvet Nosed nipping squealer, I'm tucking you in early. Felix has been snoozing at my left hand this past hour and I'm just going to curl up with him for awhile. Your job is to sleep well, heal, be careful getting up and down, and have ACN! You are now halfway through ACW already. You are also two days shy of three months since the Day From Hell. Good night, amazing one.

Good night, Barbaro Nation, and thank you. Get well, Steve's kitten.

    Hi everybody,
The poem The Rainbow Bridge has really helped me to cope with the loss of my chocolate lab Sandy to cancer 14 years ago, I loved her so much, I keep her pictures where I can see them everyday. Also 2 yrs ago my white chihuahua Ren passed away suddenly and I was heartbroken, but I have his picture and Sandies picture copied to the poem, because I know we will all meet again someday at the rainbow bridge. I now have a black lab Night and a chocolate lab Boo that I love, they are wonderful and caring pets and very loyal. When I look into Boo's eyes he reminds me so much of Sandy sometimes but he could never take her place. Just stay strong and remember they love you and you love them.

you're very welcome, i know that poem causes me to cry too, but knowing we will be with ...all of our beloved furry friends can also be quite comforting, even though we might have to brace ourselves and give them hugs all at the same time will be well worth the wait to able to be reunited with them again, and see the love and sparkle in their beautiful eyes and know that they never stopped loving us and we never stopped loving them, and that nothing will ever separate us and them again. Just remember to tell them all we love them unconditionally, and all of the horses too.

Mentioning that Barbaro has a cow friend reminded me of a strange thing that happened a few yrs ago.
I have a 24 yr old TB (retired jumper) Anyway his pasture had cows in the next pasture. He is 17.2 so the fence only came to his lower chest. He LOVED to stand at the fence and poke his head and neck as far over as he could to let the cows and calves lick him! They licked him all over his head and neck and he loved it. I have never seen or heard of that before. He seemed to enjoy their company even when they weren't licking him. He also has always had other horses with him so he's not lonely, just must like cow company! None of the other horses did that.

    Jake,

I'm so sorry for your loss of Daisy. My heart aches, as I know that pain all too well. My gorgeous Tigger told me it was 'time' at 18 yrs. Having 17 &1/2 yrs together, Tig was my one and only baby. We went through thick and thin together, everything you could imagine. Loss of my Mom, a marriage, divorce, career change, relocation .... on and on.

Tig would snuggle with me every night, right by my side. Or he'd curl up in the crook of my bent knee. I will always smile a sweet smile, thinking of him! If I feel a 'thump' on the bed, I know he's visiting..

Bless you, your Mom, and Daisy. She'll be with you forever. Please know, and trust that.

Love and prayers for you all.

I think just some of them because my friend's husband won't let her put her horses with the cows. He thinks they may hurt the calves. I'm sure my horse Phoenix wouldn't. But Phoenix was the ONLY horse in that pasture that had anything to do with the cows, strange.

Oh JAKE-Your mom! I know that she has to be devastated about Daisy! I am so sad for you guys right now, and for her sister cat Allie. My cat grieved something awful after his sister was gone. He was never quite the same. I can appreciate the pain of loving them too much, and learning that there is a time to letting them go. It has always been so tough to do. I try not to be selfish with my love. I do not wish to keep them until they are beyond the point of no return, I would not wish that on any being. I pray you and your mom and little Allie will be alright and remember the happy hairy fun times with Daisy.

FELIX-I pray that news will be good for your mama. She is quite sad right now, and worried.

BDUDE-I cannot wait to see a pic of you! I bet you ARE louder than my Siamese cat. He is quite silent, for some reason, except when hungry. He is not like typical Siamese, he is quite large (16 lbs) and not very vocal. If he wants to talk, he will-he just never has much to say!! Hope little sick kitty recovers, prayers for newest baby.

CAHILL-good job on eating and recovering! Keep it up, and you will be a-ok real soon!

ROCKETT & CHINA-I have not heard anything about you lately, pray all is well and you are being frisky.

    Mary S,

Thank you for posting that article above, the story of Barbaro's ride that fateful day. I had just a few minutes before read the story of the Indiana horses which is just devastating, and then to reread the events of that day at the Preakness - I am in agreement / sick in tears and gratitude. I found myself reading faster and faster as the van made its way toward NBC and salvation. I wish all these horse were on such a trip... Barbaro saved himself, with the assistance of all these wonderful, caring people. These other horses have been horribly betrayed, and the contrast is overwhelming. They have no chance to save themselves - other than with the innate will to live. The path is clear, for we who care...

Am posting here, this post from TWF on thread In Honor of Barbaro Challenge; it is from
MichelleFOB, and is an update from Stephanie. (Message 1144.1136)

    Hi Cathy and All,

I spoke with Stephanie's husband briefly this morning, and Stephanie contacted me this afternoon to let me know about the auction, and how the horses are doing...

Stephanie is one extremely busy woman! She has been going non-stop since they got off the
plane... and after getting the horses, she has been spending her days working with them, getting
them all settled in at her friend's ranch (for now), and buying feed, hay, deworming them, etc...

Their "to-do" list is a "mile long!"

The auction was *very* emotional for Stephanie - Thank goodness her friend Julie was there to
help by sharing her knowledge of these auctions, who are the KB's, etc...She pointed out to
Stephanie 2 KB's sitting to their left (Stephanie and her friends were sitting in the front row of the auction-house...they paid a girl to "hold" their seats early on Sunday, while they made "rounds" and checked on horses).
There was a moment when Stephanie was very surprised to see the woman who helped her with
the purchase of "Cloud" walk up to the 2 KB's who were sitting one seat apart from each other,
and she sat right in the middle of them - she was with them! Stephanie did not know this when
working with her to get Cloud for us...

Stephanie was bidding directly against the KB's on the younger mare in foal, with a foal at her
side...After the KB's were out-bid by Stephanie, and her friend Julie (she also rescued a horse)
and other legit buyers, they got up and walked out! The Belgium mare went to a home with kids,
and they were already riding her there! (she was very gentle).

The horses are getting settled in and are doing well - She said that Cloud is a real sweetie, and he is already enjoying the pasture with her friend Julie's horses (he is easy-going, and so they have "allowed" him to join the herd! : ) The others are in stalls and separate turn-outs - Stephanie has been working with the younger pg mare's foal - who is now a "weanling" (the filly is 6 months old and starting to cause her mom to lose weight - it was time to give the young mom a chance to regain her weight and strength for the baby to come! This filly was not halter-broke at first, but she is already accepting the halter, and allowing Stephanie to lead her around!

Stephanie took pictures of all of the new horses that were saved by the FOB's, and she planned to
take the camera to a drug-store today to load them onto a disk so she could post them soon for all of us to see them! She is thinking about us...

I hope this helps to give you this update from today...(this is the first time she and I have talked since the auction...Things have been so hectic for Stephanie - she's got her "hands full" right now, but she's so happy to hear about the "co-sponsors" for the new ones (they are all girls - except Cloud - he'll be in "heaven" - like his name, "Cloud Nine" LOL : )
Blessings to you all - You have been a true inspiration and should be very proud!!

    G'nite fellow FOB's.
Tomorrow, early, I head for Barbaro-land ...... and IF I weren't so tired now ..... I'd be leaping sky high with excitement ! Once I'm on board - in my seat - I'll be able to breathe a deep, deep breath ......... and realize that I really am heading east .......... to visit Fair Hill ........ Kennett Florists - and be as close as I can to the "Big Boss" ........ at New Bolton.
The plan is to hook up with Lyn G and Ryan during the visit .................. and Alex, of course, on Saturday morning. The earlier article about New Bolton folk was outstanding ........ and I look forward to bumping into some of them.

Good Thursday morning Alex, Bobby and Barbaro nation

Loved the new article (with new pictures)from Mid Atlantic Horse, Alex. thank you! What really tickled me was Mrs. Jackson saying that Barbaro isn't just their horse anymore. Does that mean he belongs to all of us now too? How thrilling to even think that. I'm so pleased that Bobby is getting so much press lately. Now if only we could get some of those reporters to bring up the slaughter house issue...........

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning, fellow Fans!

A wild, wet and windy morning in Maine! Throw in a little thunder and lightning and you've got the picture! I'd rather be snuggled in bed still but the job calls.

Hoping for ACN from NBC and more carrots and treats than you could possibly eat for you, our star of a horse. Perhaps it's time to explain the concept of sharing with you, eh?

Alex - thank you yet again. We'd be crazy without your updates. Also, please pass on our appreciation to Michael, Peter and all who aid you in feeding our insatiable appetite for information.

    Hay Barbaro:

You made it on the evening National news with Charles Gibson. And a few minutes ago I heard your name mentioned on the overnight news. There was older video (I think the UPENN video) too!

You laid your ears back at MM! Bet he told you it was time to go back in and that grazing time was over for the day. I'd lay my ears back too!

But its nice to know that you've made friends with the cows next door and that one of them actually comes over from time to time to visit with you. Mom and Dad might have to think about seeing if they can bring her along with you when its time to go home...

I hope you have a good morning. Be nice. On second thought since your da boss hoss you might have extra privileges...

    Mary S
I can't thank you enough for the link to the article you posted last night. It was the most detailed chronicle of the events of that fateful day in May. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Jake

I hope today is a wee bit better for you, although I suspect, that may be a long time off yet.

    Steve,

Please give us a "kitty" update today. I hope and pray the poor thing survived. You are wonderful!

Any update on the Indiana horses? I was going to sponsor another Mo horse but after reading about the Indiana horses - donated there. Jeez - wish I could sponsor or support them all.

Dr. R on Dancing with the Stars???? Now THAT is an exciting thought. I love that show...but I'm afraid some posters (Pamela?) are going to have to take their comments to the chat room ;)

I love the picture of the Boss with his ears flattened in irritation -- I think Mr. Matz was interrupting his grass chomping time and he wanted to remind him that if he wanted to touch him, he could wait until he was inside NBC and in his stall. Maybe you could be a horse model when you are completely healed. Have a great day, sweetie. We will all be thinking and praying for you today as well as contacting our senators on your friends' behalf.

Mary S - Thank you for posting that article about what happened right after the Preakness. I probably couldn't have read it at the time, but 5 months later knowing where Barbaro is now, it was very interesting. I really enjoyed reading about the details, particularly when Barbaro rested his head on Edwardo's shoulder while in the ambulance on the way to NBC.

Look at Barbaro's eyes in the picture where he has
his head low, grazing. There is so much there it is almost frightening.

I can see power, strength , courage, warning,
a being apart. Perhaps we see what we want to .
Maybe his eyes are reflecting mirrors , and we are
seeing what we project onto him. Maybe thats one of the sources of his power. He can make you see.

    MARY S
That was a great article. Thanks for sharing. It reminded me of how tough and strong Bobby has been from the very beginning. This is no ordinary horse. Also made me wonder how on earth people can treat other horses so badly when humans can have the motivation to do so much good. Also made me wish Eduardo could have another Bobby visit. Esp. this winter when there is no grass to graze on :(

I think it's the UPenn article that has THE most touching pix I've seen--Dr. R is leaning against Bobby with his eyes half closed, and Bobby is looking strong and straight ahead as if to say, "Hey, buddy, I can be strong for you, too." It's just precious.

    dear Alex,
i am again, struck by the clever and kind inclusion of barbaro food for us.
.the articles are absolutely redemptive and wonder material..like the sun rises ofver hawaii.
.the islands, floating like open pedaled flowers--serence yet turbulent..volcanos simmering..
..in the middle of deep pacific currents..
wow. if anyone is tired and disocouraged by cruel, heavy handedness of people in power..whether in marbled halls or horse anuctions..
just look at what love has done .THE HISTORY IS ALL THERE AND STILL IN THE MAKING..
.all these incredible people working as a team for one goal..may the great horse of our time,,barbaro ,continue daily to be heartened and nourished by all these higher selves..
i am led to hawaii today,-- where i have danced many times..to audiences that really get it.
.their souls are open and free of clutter.their beautiful rituals are based on grstitude for all of nature;s rhtyms..
there for dearest barbaro and fans of barbaro,
today i want to offer platters of freshly backed pumpkin bread to be served wiht the famous tingly pumpkin soup hawaiians make tinges of cinnamon and butter..
..we might have some sweet muffins crusted with walnuts and cream vanilla icing..to be washed down wiht a tea that harbors on some ancient musky yet ginery scent...
may we toss the birds some seeds and pass the plates of fresh pineapple mangos, papays, and bananas
..chocolate chip cookies heavy with macademia nuts and powdered sugar ..are everywhere for dogggy bags
..maybe the wind ,so full of orchids and magnolias, may cast our senses through the forest leaves, upward ,where daisy now hangs wiht the fog and precisionisin tha blue black sky loaded wiht other stars..twinkling twinkling..tand many others who have done their road here.
i know dearest barbaro,, through looking in your eyes, that you do get weary..but simply know how we love you and how we will work to support all the wonderful people working day and night --dr dean...NBC--etc...toease your every unspoken and spoken nipping velvet nose --worries..
once again, yesterday, in my city, as i left juilliard, there was chaos but this time i ran like a little meerkat and made it out of the city to my home on the island ,in two hours..by the time th efire was out, i was safe i n my town... unfortunaley, the smells of buyning buildings and screams of runninng people, brought me back to flashbacks of that day.
i resolved to clean the house from top to bottom and then look at my barbaro shrine and scrapebook among other treasures ,to see where i am now..the past is anohter country i have left.
the books are full of beautiful pictures..gleaned from trips to other lands.
.how grateful i am for having the opportunity to say thank you
just wish i had more green stuff so i could buy a few more horses and take care of anyone else in our extended family.in nned...
in the light and in the dark..may your day dearest barbaro,
    be easefull.
.may you be surrounded in ligtht and strength and hope ..
    all to all
i wear all of you. like garlands that surround my arms and ankles...i carry you all about me like a beautiful necklace..

I thought it would be a good idea to re post this each day so everyone has the information handy. And it's also a good idea to call members of the committee.

With all the site problems yesterday, I thought it best to re-post this list. These are the senators that were mentioned in Alex's update as being the "key to our success"

    SIX SENATORS TO FOCUS ON

Senator Frist, Majority Leader to get on calendar
    202-224-3135 phone
    202-228-4637 fax

    Senator Stevens,co-sponsor and Committee Chairman
to help move it out of committee
    202-224-3004 phone
    202-224-2354 fax

Senator Ensign, Sponsor of S1915 and committee member to move it out of committee
    202-224-6244 phone
    202-224-2193 fax

    Senator Landrieu, co-sponsor
    202-224-5824 phone
    202-224-9735 fax

    Senator Reed, co-sponsor
    202-224-4642 phone
    202-224-4680 fax

    Senator McConnell
    202-224-2541 phone
    202-224-2499 fax

Also, please stay after your own senators. Those that are not on board yet to co-sponsor.

Those that are already co-sponsors to let them know how important this issue is to you as a constituent so they will help move it.

Remember, at this point, most of them know the details. They just tally up the calls at the end of the day. Keep it short, polite and courteous. It's the NUMBER of calls that will make the difference.

Thanks and good luck to us all!!!!

Well, well, the patient is getting an attitude for the cameras. Ears back, side glances to Michael, making Dr. R laugh. You are the big boss horse aren't you. As long as you keep growing that hoof, you can show all the attitude you want. You are our reason for being here. Butterfly kisses to you big guy!!

Please remember to email friends to sign Mike Rea's petition. It has not grown by much since yesterday. Send it to ten and have them send it to ten. It does work that way. Mike and his family are so deserving of this makeover.

In the ambulance, Barbaro nestled his head on Hernandez's shoulder, as Miller watched.

"Eduardo is his buddy. That's what happens when you rub a horse every day," Miller said.

I know I read that Eduardo got to go once to see Barbaro at New Botlon does anyone know if he gets to continue to do so??? I sure hope that he does I sure think he should be able to do so.

I don't post very often, but wanted to let Jake know that I feel so badly for him and his Mom. We've all been through saying good bye to our beloved pets, and its hard. Its not supposed to be easy, losing someone you love. The pain honors the love. And the love heals the pain. Bless little Daisy, she lived to be a beloved, elderly kitty. It doesn't get better than that. And Jake and his Mom made that happen for her. Its a wonderful thing to have, the love for and of, an animal DJo-Ann

My thoughts are to call our Commerce Senators who are co-sponsors since we believe Senator Landreiu is going to make a push.

If you know your Senator is on Commerce and a co-sponsor, please give them another call.

I tried to post some info on how horsemeat is shipped, but I got the "malicious posting" hold notice...Maybe it will post again later. Meanwhile, what I saw indicated that horsemeat is shipped from Dallas to the port of Houston; maybe it is flown out from there, or maybe shipped by boat; I don't know.

From DeKalb, it seems to be air shipped to Charles de Gaulle (Paris), and perhaps elsewhere. I did not see any specific information as to which carriers are used.

I am sure this is incomplete information; it is just from online research.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of horses are slaughtered and meat sold in parts of Europe, Asia, and Canada. Not the old, lame horses, but young, rideable horses in their prime.

As we know, horses sold at auctions, purchase by killer buyers paying less than what the horse is worth. making the animal worth more dead than alive.

In U.S. few regulations govern the transportation of slaughter-bound horses....

I do not people understand after a horse has serve his life for companion to humankind...why they cannot give the horse a good life which it deserves.

California pass a law in 1999 outlawing the practice of selling horses for slaughter.

A nationwide ban has to come together to stop this..which fans of Barbaro are so desperately trying.

But experts also believe that even if U.S. bans against this. the killer buyers will simply ship horses to Canada, where horse slaughter is legal..

We have more to work on...

    Good morning, everyone.

Thanks again for all the wonderful posts for Daisy. I printed them up and bordered them with colored pens and gave them to my mom to read.

I love the article on Barbaro! And the photos. He looks fantastic! And his usual feisty self. Watch your step, Michael!

maybe somehow a law could be made to make it illegal and prohibited to transport horses and burros from the U.S. to Canada, that would be a big step to protect the horses and burros even more. if it could just be done somehow...

S1915 bans transportation of horses for human consumption, thus making it illegal to take them to Canada.

SHELLLY A - ARE YOU STILL ON?

I just talked to an aide in Sen. Jack Reed's office to ask for his help to get S1915 out of committee. He said that this bill was already on the legislative schedule after the election when the Senators returned. I asked if he had a specific day on the schedule, and he said it has not been determined yet. I also asked if it would help to call Sen. Frist office to ask that it be put on the schedule before the end of the session. He said that couldn't hurt. It sounds like it is out of committee already. Do you know anything about this? I don't want to get too excited because I don't know if I really understand what he said.

    ##Marilyn,

Dallas and Chicago are both hubs for American Airlines, how convenient, so they fly the horsemeat from all 3 slaughter houses. They are getting paid ALOT of money for this. Hopefully they will feel some heat from all of us.

    Mary and everyone
This is why we just need to focus our attention on calling and faxing the Big Six senators, plus our own senators. The bill will help a lot, if we can just get it through the Senate.

    Patty,
I don't think ShelleyA is still on, but I can try to answer your question:
If there's no specific day on the schedule it's not officially on the calendar yet, though it seems like positive news. Speaking of officially, it's not officially out of committee, but it sounds like it's going in the right direction. Getting it on the calendar is the reason we are calling the Big Six committee members and Sen. Frist's office, so we need to just stay focused on this and keep doing what we're doing.

    Cheers,
    Not ShelleyA but

I just had a nice conversation with one of Senator Feinstein's aides. I know the senator is a longtime supporter of this issue, and a co-sponsor; but she is not on the Commerce Committee. Nevertheless, I asked if she would be willing to make S. 1915 a personal priority during the recess. I suggested that she might check with Senator Landrieu to see what she is doing on this -- personally writing to each senator about co-sponsorship -- and that perhaps Senator Feinstein might be willing to so something similar. The aide said she would give the senator all this information today...
