Barbaro Updates: 113

updates are now here.

Update 907: As we wait for our Barbaro update, I wanted to post this commentary about the Breeders' Cup Classic, from a European perspective, and with obvious focus on the Jackson-bred George Washington (via Sue McMullen):

We are flagging up the BC Classic as one of the best in the history of the race. With Bernadini, Lava Man and George Washington currently level in the ratings, and you add to that David Junior, Giacomo and not forgetting Perfect Drift, it's an awesome prospect.

Commenting on the continued debate about running turf superstar George Washington in the Classic, the first time he'll face dirt, trainer Aiden O'Brien told the Racing Post they've never had a horse with pace like his out of all their good horses (which is some compliment): "Everyone says that Danehills won't go on the dirt and that's very possible, but we won't know until he runs. It's a gamble but we are hoping maybe he can overcome all this.

"George is so quick and has natural early pace. I have always thought he could get a mile and a quarter. He is a very rare horse. What we are hoping will help is that this horse travels so well in his races and he has never been stopping at the end, even over a mile.

"Not having raced on dirt will be a big disadvantage, but that's been the case for many horses and, if it's possible to overcome it, then this horse could do it. The circumstances are all a danger more than any horses.

"We haven't seen much of Bernardini. Everyone knows about him, he looks a good horse and Tom Albertrani knows what to do and what not to do. We're going in at a big disadvantage, but it's probably going to be his last race so we might as well explore.

"We know what he can do over a mile on grass. I don't want to blow him up but all I can say is we've never had anything like this before."

So George will take his chance and we must hope that he does indeed 'overcome it'.

Given the wealth of talent that Aiden O'Brien has had in his charge, to state "we've never had anything like this before" is incredible praise. What is equally intriguing is I think Tom Albertrani will say the same for Bernardini.

Update 906: Once again the Barbaro update will be later in the morning.

The following: Barbaro: We Believe in Miracles is a new, up to date, video. It is very nice, but there are a couple of shots from the Preakness.

The following article: Barbaro still the focus of much support, well-wishers is another that highlights Barbaro's persistant support through his long recover. The following are excerpts:

"He has a nice hair coat and he looks good," says Richardson. "Since he started grazing in August he has put on over 50 pounds. But he doesn't look like a racehorse. He has been on the equivalent of bed rest other than to go outside and get walked once a day."

The right hind foot remains encased in a fiberglass cast, primarily to help protect his left. "We're pretty sure that he could be out of the cast in his right hind, except that we don't want to take any risks of overloading his left hind," Richardson explains. "In some parts of the left hoof he has good growth but other parts are slower.

"He's bright and inquisitive. He seems to have a real desire to go on."

and

"This summer Barbaro received a beautiful wedding invitation with an RSVP and everything," relates Rench. "Dr. Richardson wrote a little note to the couple saying: 'Thank you very much for the invitation and best of luck. At this point Barbaro does not have any interest in remaining monogamous.'"

In Richardson's opinion, if Barbaro makes an optimum recovery he will be able to be used as a stallion. Given his pedigree and brilliant record in his brief racing career, he probably would become a multi-million dollar stud.

But the Jacksons' primary concern isn't for Barbaro to someday have a love life. Like countless others across America, they just want him to have a long and happy life.

Update 905: I just spoke to Peter Brette, who visited Barbaro this afternoon. Barbaro remains comfortable. Peter groomed him, took him out to graze and changed his bandages. His usually routine when Peter visits.

Update 904: Alie from Kennett Florist left the following comment (timestamp: 9:19 pm):

Hope everyone is after the senators today. So just a quick upate, Beautiful but cool day here in Kennett Square. I Delivered treats for the big boss horse around 1:30. All was good at NBC. I felt a happy mood while visiting. Everyone in town is getting ready for the parade tonight. It is going to be cold. Our Christmas celebration parade is for Kennett square is Nov 24th. For a little town we have lots going on. That's all, for now. Good night & God Bless.
We Believe
Alie

I have also made a few updates to the FAQ.

Update 903: Here are details on those pre-entered for the Breeders' Cup, saturday, November 4: Contention Runs Deep in 2006 World Championships; 127 Pre-Entered. From Fair Hill we have Round Pond (Michael Matz: Distaff), Film Maker (Graham Motion: Fillies and Mares Turf), and 2004 Breeders' Cup winner Better Talk Now (Graham Motion: Turf).

Sue McMullen sent this list of european contenders:

Juvenile - nothing

Mile - Ad Valorem, Aussie Rules, Araafa, Echo of Light, Librettist, Rob Roy, Sleeping Indian, Ivan Denisovitch.
Distaff - Nothing

Note, Discreet Cat is only entered in case Bernardini does not run in the Classic.

Update 902: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). I saw Peter after work. He had heard from Michael. Its likely Peter will again be visiting Barbaro today so I will try to follow up later.

The following is my interview with Dean McKeown, who just rode his biggest race winner in the Canadian International last sunday. Thanks to Sue McMullen for helping me get Dean's number. I used to work with Dean twenty years ago at Richard Whitaker's.

Dean On Collier Hill
A few years ago, 2002, I was riding Hugs Dancer and beat Collier Hill in the Cumberland Plate at Carlisle. I thought Collier Hill suited the way I like to ride, sitting just off the pace. I kept asking Allan Swinbank, Collier Hill's trainer, if I could ride him. Eventually he gave me the ride at York, this was in 2004, and we finished third in a group 3 race. He then ran poorly in the soft ground. He had bad joints so they preferred to run him on the more forgiving ground. If they (trainer and staff) could manage his legs I thought he would be a better horse on the firm going. We ran in the Stockholm Cup in September of that year, on good ground. The bends had been watered so there was a little give in the ground. When we jumped off from the start he was feeling the ground in the early stages, he sat last. This was not ideal, but they were going too quick. Foreign Affair made the running and I was 16 lengths behind. Collier Hill lengthened his stride around the final bend on the more forgiving ground (watered), he was 8 lengths behind at the eighth pole and just got in front at the wire. This was the first group win for Collier Hill, a group 3.

In 2005 we pointed him for the Irish St. Leger, 1 mile and 6 furlongs. He went to Dubai and won a group 3 again, he was then third in the Sheema Classic, a $3m race, he won $500,000 for third prize. He won a group race in Germany beating a Canadian International winner. He was then beaten a short head in a group 1 in Germany. Collier Hill kept improving all the time, and his joints seemed to also be improving. Collier Hill then won the Irish St. Leger.

In 2006 Collier Hill had two runs at the beginning of the year at Ascot, he then went to the Curragh to take on Kastoria. While he was beaten in a photo by Kastoria, he had had a significant hoof problem going into the race, he was also giving 6lbs. Going into the Canadian International his form looked good and it was surprising to see him at 12 - 1. It seems that because he is trained by a less fashionable trainer, and ridden by a less fashionable jockey his accomplishments are continually overlooked. I was convinced he would finish in the first three. The ground was on the soft side of good, which while not ideal for Collier Hill, is less ideal for north american-based horses which are used to only firm ground. I was in Canada to ride Collier Hill before the race, thursday - sunday (Collier Hill exercised the morning of the race). One thing I did notice was the turf close to the inside rail on the straight away was two inches shorter. This type of observation clearly helped in my tactics. The race set up very well for Collier Hill. He was allowed to sit just off a fast pace, we then kicked for home, he was perhaps headed a little by Go Deputy, but had enough to get his head in front on the wire.

Dean McKeown Background
This was the biggest win in Dean's quite long career. I joked with Dean that big wins are supposed to come early in one's career so you can parlay it into something special. That being said, if you look at Dean's career he has actually done very well. He was written off at the age of 21, at 24 he rode 3 winners the entire season. At 25 he came north to Richard Whitaker's to get a fresh start (this is where I met Dean). From that new beginning he did have a few years with a lot of winners. The fastest horse he ever rode was Orient (I rode Orient work once, her first bit of work as a 3yo. I was to never ride her again after that, and she blew away her work partner).

Collier Hill Background
As for Collier Hill. He was bought for $5,000 from John Gosden's stable, George Strawbridge was his owner. He won a bumper race at Catterick for his first start for his new connections, the idea was to take him hurdling. He was a "crap" hurdler. He switched to the flat and was a decent handicapper for a while. Once they figured out his preference for the going, and got his joints in order, the horse kept improving. He is now being pointed for a race in Hong Kong.

On racing on synthetic tracks.
I asked also asked Dean about synthetic tracks in the UK. Dean noted that initially they got it wrong in the UK in terms of the mix used for the tracks. There was kickback which was entirely unpleasant. The two polytracks they have now at Lingfield and Kempton are great. There is no track bias, a horse can win from anywhere, come from behind, sit on the front, wherever. I asked if the times were a little slower, and he noted that perhaps they were, but a track can control for that depending on how deep the surface is. The Lingfield times are generally quicker than the Kempton times. I mentioned that perhaps turf runners were enjoying this type of surface as much as, if not more than, the dirt runners. This did not surprise Dean. With no kickback, a horse can get a hold of the track much like they would a firm turf track. It will be interesting to see how these types of tracks get adopted in the US. Hollywood's meet opens shortly with the Cushion track.

BARBARO - GREAT ACN! We are calling the Senators on your behalf.

Getting great remarks from all the aides.

Mary S.

Happy to be of service. I thought the video would be a distraction for Jo (UK) who had accidentally stumbled on some slaughter photos. She, as I would be, was horrified.

Thank you for your lovely posts every day. I'm now going to make it a daily practice to read them out out loud. That way I'll be using 3 senses - sight, hearing and speech.

Blessings to you and all FOBs

Keep calling & faxing. We want the Senators to know that this issue WILL NOT go away, nor will we until those slaughterhouses close - permanently.

Senator Ensign's office said they are receiving many calls due to the great organization in support of S.1915.

Asked him the same question everyone is asking, what can we do, told him we are calling, faxing, and e-mailing, he said that's all that can be done. To continue doing it.

Good morning Alex and thanks for the update. Following the synthetic track story... thank you for bringing real feedback from those who work with it. Looking forward to seeing US tracks convert to a safer surfaces, using the expereince of our UK colleagues as a guide. Now if only we'd shift our obsession with speed, which may come to pass on Polytrack.

Barbaro, from our hearts to yours, grow that hoof, comfortably, evenly and completely, with healthy tissue and strong structure beneath to support the active life you are returning to. Enjoy your daily trips outside, a taste of more to come.

I've made my calls for this morning and told both my Senators (staff) that it would be a real shame for the Senate to fall down on the job after the House had finally gotten the bill passed!

I handed out the Humane Society flyers at my yoga class, so hopefully generated even more calls.

I received an email from the Missouri Humane Society, urging me to call my Senators too. They are apparently trying to keep count, so I went to their site and counted myself for my state. And they don't even know about all the other calls!

Will make more calls this afternoon. Good JOB, everyone!!

Great tribute to Fog--hope it hasn't been posted:

Crystal Clear

By Davant Latham
He was special; a simple word that seems inadequate, but at the same time says it all. He was speed incarnate, not just blazing fast but white-hot fast, able to run a second quarter faster perhaps than any horse before him. He was without pretensions, no blue-blooded pedigree or flighty temperament. He was all business. He was the most talked about 3-year-old of his generation, yet he never ran a mile. He singlehandedly brought national attention to a beautiful little track by the bay, but only ran three races there. He was honest -- 11 smashing victories from 14 starts -- and was managed by two honest, straight-talking individuals. No made-for-TV sound bites here, just the straight stuff. He was not quite the fairy tale horse; he was too real for that. He was brilliant, vibrantly alive, and physically imposing, but has passed quietly into that soft, black night. He was Lost in the Fog.
He was appreciated, again a simple word that understates his public appeal, and yet in our age of overblown superlatives, "appreciated" may say more than it seems. As the wins accumulated, his adoring owner would marvel, "Can you believe I own this horse?" Harry Aleo fully appreciated The Fog. In April at Golden Gate, everyone that passed Harry said, "Thanks for running him here, Harry" or "Thank you, Harry." In the paddock, the crowd pressed against the railings for a view, and more cries of "Thank you, Harry" went out. And more than once someone said, "Can you believe this is our horse?" After that day's inconceivable second-place result, the crowd still cheered for him. The people fully appreciated The Fog. Even the stud masters appreciated The Fog; the paddock at Saratoga before the King's Bishop (gr. I) was a convention of every major stud farm waiting to shake Harry's hand and gaze at greatness.
The track managers and various leaders of horse racing seem obsessed with take-out and slots and simulcasting rights. After all, it is business. But perhaps the money makes one forget the cleanness and purity of it, the courage and beauty of the Thoroughbred. The heart of a lion within an animal of prey, the sensation of flight without wings, the exhilaration and exhaustion one feels after witnessing a tenacious stretch duel or a tremendous performance. Slots will not save horse racing; exotic wagers will not save horse racing. Fans will save horse racing. Perhaps we've been too focused on the dollars to see what Harry and the Golden Gate crowd saw. Maybe The Fog came to remind us what we have is truly "priceless."
He came to the right people. Sue Seper foaled and raised him simply, but well, while christening him with the perfect name. Greg and Karen Dodd started him under tack and at times wondered if he had enough "fire," but also battled the desire to keep him and race him themselves. Greg Gilchrist took him, looked temptation in the eye, and took the road less traveled, away from the Derby trail. Not to say he did not travel, for Greg took The Fog crosscountry several times, and certainly their "less traveled road" made all the difference in creating a legion of followers.
Much to everyone's surprise, The Fog ran poorly in his biggest race, but perhaps that too was a part of the master plan, that he could be defeated on the biggest day of all and yet still be the overwhelming champion of his division. Perhaps the thing within him was already there, hiding from view, but there just the same. In spite of that race, he was named champion sprinter and carried the hopes of many into the New Year.
The Fog was hailed as a sure thing in his first start of 2006, yet ran a stunning second. His next start may have provided the most satisfying victory of all when he regained his former glory with a scintillating performance in the Aristides Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) at Churchill Downs. The Fog was his old self, rewarding his faithful while running breathtaking fractions before gearing himself down as he ran to the line that so many would have pushed him toward a year prior.
In the end he, like us, was transient. Flesh and blood. He will always be special. He was Lost in the Fog.

Good Morning Alex and All

Thanks for the updates, Alex. You were working with Mr. McKeown 20 years ago?? Meaning you were riding before you learned to crawl??? Amazing...but we knew that about you.

Hay MisturSteeeenker another day of healing behind you. Keep it up!! We love you so much.

The senators aides sound as though they are beginning to wear down a bit. This can't be new, getting barraged before a senate session that coincides with an election. I'm getting a lot of big sighs. No snips, just sighs. Will keep on keepin' on.

Love to all Especially LindaH, Mike Rea, Erin, Skyler, (forgive me, whomever I left out, you are still in my thoughts) and all the voiceless ones who need our love, care and prayers.

Hi friends,
I was at a fundraiser for our Representative, Marcy Kaptur (Ohio) on Sunday. I thanked her for her support of 503. When I asked her what we could do to move this thing along, she said "keep calling your senators." So let's keep fighting like Thoroughbreds, most notably our hero, BARBARO.

Ohioans: DeWine IS for 1915, Voinovich has not committed. Can't say on Brown.

Barbaro--love you, big boss hoss. Keep that attitude front and center, babycakes. Grow that hoof. Enjoy your treats. Think of those fillies and mares, big boy. Someday.......

Senator Burns' aide -- MUST READ

I am completely stunned. I just had an incredibly wonderful conversation with an aide in Senator Burns' office. Now, I don't want everyone to overwhelm her with long phone conversations. Just call and say your quick piece, and get off. I was able to plant the seed very powerfully with her, and all she needs now is to see the calls coming in.

I started out with my quick version -- I just was going to say my piece and hang up. But she asked where I was from. So I said I am from California, but it affects us because California horses end up in a Nevada feed lot for holding before they are transported, even though California has banned this kind of slaughter. She was surprised (not challenging, just surprised) to hear that about Nevada. I told her that even though California has banned slaughter, Californian horses can be stolen... (Stolen?? she said. I told her the theft stats, then about the auctions, then about the Premarin mares and foals).

I told her that HSUS and all the animal welfare organizations back the bill.

I told her about the slaughter method -- that horses try to evade the stun bolt that is designed for cattle. That it is not humane euthanization, that the drugs cannot be injected because of the food usage.

I told her about the transport, and the trailer that overturned in Missouri.

I told her everything, and she just listened carefully and took notes. She said, you are very well informed. I said, I am just a volunteer who feels strongly about this, and I have friends who do, and we have taught each other.

Then, she said, let me ask you a question -- not from the senator, from me. I said, I understand; we are just having a conversation at this point. She said, what would you say to my sister-in-law who raises horses and gives lessons and has a family and can barely make ends meet but does not want to go and get a town job. What should she do with her horses at the end of their life? I said that most people who care about their horses would have them humanely euthanized by a vet. It costs about $200, and that is less than a month's feed, etc. She said that is a very good answer.

She said I have written down many things, and I will tell the senator. She said I am an old cattle rancher.

And I was stunned that I was talking the whole time to a cattle rancher, and she listened with such interest and courtesy the whole time...Sorry this post is so long, it was just amazing.

Please call Senator Burns' office and just say you are calling in support of National Call-In Day for S. 1915 -- don't try to keep her on the phone, she just spent a LONG time with me, and she got it all! Just give her a nice, huge tally for today.

Miss Mish,

Thank you so much for the update on HSMO accident horses. I have donated, but will be sponsoring one of them soon as I get my paycheck. LOL

My husband and I volunteer at Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines near where we live in PA. They have about 80 horses in 2 barns. It is truly "a labor of love" and we're there every Sat. & Sun. doing what you will be doing, mucking & bedding stalls, feeding, grooming, cleaning the barns. I'm 58 and if I can do it, you have a much better chance at 40. LOL

Thank you for the great post and I hope you will keep all of us up-to-date on the HSMO horses as they progress. Maybe you could start a thread on the Discussion Board with your experiences.

I talked to Sabina last Saturday. She is home and progressing nicely, but still in pain. She is adament about riding again. Sabina is a very strong person and I have no doubt that she will.

Alex, as always, a million thanks.

Compel each member to immediately move S1915 to the floor in a right and perfect way, and then vote with their hearts and their conscience for the highest good of all.

Just finished round one today - emails to the seven and my own senators in Wisconsin. So many posts I've forgotten who posted the following website, but thank you to who that was. I am hoping everyone on the board will call Senator Burns today. He is on the Commerce Committee list, above. He is our hardest sell, so he needs lots of calls. Do we need to waste resources on Senator Burns giving his staunch position? Why not focus on folks on the fence who we can readily sway.

This reminds me of the pro-life / abortion debates. Anyone who strongly believes in either will not be swayed.

I understand that it seems hopeless to deal with people like Senator Burns, but if they don't get calls, they won't understand that they may be out of step. Please read my post at 5:51. I caught the ear of an aide who had truly never thought about any of this before, from the anti-slaughter position. We spent about 20 minutes together on the phone, and she truly listened. She said she would talk to the senator about this. She needs to be able to say she got a ton of calls. I really believe that if everyone on the board calls Senator Burns today, it might be the start of a new attitude in his office. Believe me, this woman is telling everyone in the office everything I said, right this minute. She is older, smart, savvy, from a cattle ranch background. She is not one of the young kids.

Please call and just give a simple statement of support for S. 1915:

A very nice young man was helping me put it into my car and he said something like...boy this paper will sure last you a long time! I told him that I had been faxing Senators over the horse slaughter issue..we talked for a few minutes and I handed him the only "flyer" I had out of my purse. He said thank you, and he was going to make copies and give them to people at the Community College he attends! (Every little bit helps) :>)

SHELLEY A -

Since we are making calls do you think we need to address the following:

House Passes Bill to Amend Horse Protection Act

Despite NACo opposition, the House of Representatives by a vote of 263-146 passed H.R. 503 on September 7. The bill would ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption, as well as export of horses for slaughter for the same purpose. Currently, there are approximately 60,000 to 90,000 horses slaughtered per year for human consumption outside the United States. If the legislation became law, many of these horses could be abandoned or neglected by their owners who no longer wish to care for them. As a result, local animal control facilities would be required to provide care for these horses. This unfunded mandate would represent a large cost to county governments. The companion bill in the Senate (S. 1915) is not expected to be considered in the Commerce, Science and Transportation committee, thereby killing the legislation for the 109th Congress. (Contact: Joe Dunn 202/942-4207 or jdunn@naco.org)

Thank you so much, those of you who have added Senator Burns to your call list for today. (He is on the Commerce Committee as a non-sponsor, so he is really already on our lists...) He is one of our staunchest opponents, and yet I had a long and very positive educational call today with one of his aides! (See 5:51, above.) Please call and give a quick statement of support so that Senator Burns will be surprised by both the tally and by what his aide has to say:

"I am from [state your home state], not from [the senator's state]. But horse slaughter affects the horses in my state, because horses are stolen from here, and purchased at auction by slaughterhouse agents, and they end up being transported to Texas or Illinois and slaughtered. Until we have a national solution to this problem, horses in my state will still be at risk. And I am calling the Senator in his capacity as a member of the Commerce Committee [or as the Senate Majority Leader or whatever], hoping that he will help to move this bill to the floor for a vote, so that we can solve this problem once and for all."

TO all FOB's,

I contacted my Vietnam Vet friend about how horses help disabled Vets in therapy and he said he would send an e-mail to all the "troops" - he knows alot of other Veterans and non-Veterans.

Here's what I had him send:

**************************************************
Did you know that America's Horses help disabled veterans who have returned from Iraq? See the video and stories below. Did you also know that our American Horses are being slaughtered every week here in this country by FOREIGN-OWNED companies that pay no taxes to the United States. Our government is letting these companies operate here in our country - now that's what I call UN-AMERICAN. There are two slaughterhouses in Texas and one in Illinois. These companies ship horse meat to foreign countries that advertise American Horse on their menus as a delicacy.

If you love your freedom and the freedom of America's Horses, then please contact your Senators and tell them you support Senate bill S1915 (American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act). If you need contact info for the Senators from your state, let me know and I will e-mail them to you.

Instead of killing our horses, think what they could do for Veterans who are disabled and others.

Ah, Katie. Young? Curt on the phone? Yes, I think I've spoken with her before. She is not the one I talked with today. Anyway, after the very lengthy, PROSELYTIZING call I got to have with a sympathetic aide earlier, I think we don't really need to chitchat with that office at this point, just rack up the calls. Thanks for calling Senator Burns!

Well, I just had the worst conversation with someone named Katie at Senator Burns office!!

I said that I was called to ask him to re consider his position and she said "That will NEVER happen" She then proceeded to tell me how wrong we were and how horses would be left to die with bullets in them if horses were not allowed to be sent to slaughter. She said it would be a bigger mess than it is now and that people had the right to dispose of them the way they saw fight. I, of course, explained that many are stolen and purchased at auction by underhanded methods from people who thought they were going to a good home. She said "Well, this bill is wrong and you people don't undertand and that's the last thing I have to say about it!"

I was shocked!!

To Barbaro: May God bless you with a complete and speedy recovery.

To everyone who supports the Horse Slaughter Bill: Please read the post from 6:58pm about the ammendment. Before deciding that horse slaughter is wrong, please take into consideration what would happen if this bill is passed. Thousands of horses that are slaughtered each year would instead be abandoned or neglected. Yes, there are horse sanctuaries and kind people who willing adopt abandonded horses every year, but there are not nearly enough of these people and places to handle the influx of unwanted animals this bill will cause. Please ask yourself which is worse? Putting an animal out of its misery or letting it suffer for months or years to come?

Outlawing horse slaughter is not the answer. Instead, we should be supporting a regulatory system which ensures the humane treatment and disposal of these creatures. Numerous equine associations, like the American Quarter Horse Association, have voiced their concern over this bill and its potential repercussions. These associations have the horses' best interests at heart. Please think twice about your position. Yes, horse slaughter is a sad alternative, but it may be a necessary evil. I've raised and shown horses for 23 years and I would much rather know that horses were being disposed of with dignity and maybe even purpose, than standing abandoned and alone, starving in a field somewhere.

I had a terrible conversation with Katie one time, too. She explained that owners can do whatever they want with their horses, even have them slaughtered for food, etc. She really believes all this stuff herself, I think. That's why I was so astonished to talk to someone in his office today who has an open mind on the issue...I thought from talking to Katie that Senator Burns had probably surrounded himself with yes-women; but he hasn't. He has a rogue thinker in the group, and I was thrilled that she answered the phone today. I'll bet they have taken her off phone duty, though!

Posted by: ShelleyA at October 25, 2006 7:32 PM

Well Shelley A, I got something similar and more negative when I called and yes got that Katie gal..

she flatly told me she wished these Anti-Slaughter People would STOP Calling as Senator Burns is not going to change his mind and "we" are just wasting "her" time..

I then asked to speak to Senator Burns to get that from him, or to have HIM return my call. She refused to do so and again stated that she is tired of these calls.

I Reminded her (and to tell Senator Burns) that he is a ELECTED official and she and him are also "paid" by US the American Voters. I explained to her that her views and thoughts should not be a part of her job to voice. I told her I was not impressed by her tone of voice and level of communication!! (she really pissed me off). She is NOT his voice nor should she state so without him backing it up.

I am typing up a letter to send to his office to complain about her actions and attitude. She was VERY UNPROFESSIONAL and too opininated. Sounds like she is a bit overwelmed by the phone calls but still she needs to maintain that professional attitude and not act like this..

His office is the only one I got a real Negative feedback. The others were QUITE NICE about the phone call, asked me who and where I was from, and said thank you and will convey your message to the senator..

argghhhhhhhhhhhh. but unlike Ms Katie, I did keep MY composure and did not let emotions get in the way of being cordial.... I am representing all the FOB's and I will not let someoen like her ruin that by doing what she is doing. I like to kill em with kindness..

Maybe more blitzing to Burns office is in order?? ha ha...

Kimberly - You posted "Outlawing horse slaughter is not the answer. Instead, we should be supporting a regulatory system which ensures the humane treatment and disposal of these creatures."

Hay all

Called Senator Burns' office. Said I was a neighbor, but would really appreciate his help. The aide was very nice, said she had a long conversation with "someone" earlier "who really drove the point home". Thought that was great, so whoever you are, you deserve a big pat on the back from all of us.

Also called Senator Obama's office, and the first question to me was if I had been able to attend the book-signing event. I was really upset that I didn't because contrary to the bookstore's website's information, the local stations reported that Senator Obama spent quite a bit of time taking questions and answers and there were several hundred people present. So it wasn't just a shove, sign and smile and thank you event. I said that regretfully I wasn't able to attend, explaining how spread out "Denver" is, and that I wasn't able to take off enough time from work to get there, be there, and come back. She said that was too bad, because he would have "loved to have spoken to you". I said that I'd had that sense from seeing him in the various interviews he's conducted over the past few years, particularly since the 2004 convention, that he's very approachable and receptive, and that he is really a man of the people. She said "that he is" I asked if they were tallying the calls requesting support and/or cosponsorship of S.1915, and she said not very accurately but the numbers are impressive, and he will NOT disregard that. I said that there seemed to be two different opinions among my colleagues as far as the Senator's position is concerned at this time. She said "not that I know about". I asked her to clarify and she said she believed he is working to get this on the floor, and is most DEFINITELY in support of the bill. She said the senators have a lot on their agenda, mostly to do with the war, anti-terrorism, domestic economy and so on, but they don't want to be perceived as putting anything on the backburner. I said I would continue to pray that is so, and reiterated that I think he would make a fine candidate in 2008. She said "thank you for your support and being so concerned and involved", and "you should tell everyone you know who has called that they should be proud that they are no longer the silent majority". There you have it. That's the key. Silence is no longer part of our forte, is it. Just like the adage, if you don't vote, you have no say. Now we are empowered to say what we think before we get to that point and MAN is that effective.

Love to all.

oh yeah... the other offices are pretty much "m-hmmmm m-hmmmmm m-hmmmmm well i'll let him/her know thanks for calling" today.

Still don't get the haveaniceday. But that's okay :)

The nicest one I contacted today was from McConnells office. . Hmmm maybe I need to tell that nice gal to give Katie some pointers???

I have 4 more calls to make and I am done for today.. Daughter let me have her cell phone so I am making calls TO all the senators.. I started with the TOP 7 first and worked on down from that...

One comment (from NY Senate offices) was why I was calling them as I am not from that state..

My answer was simple.. all Senators make choices and decesions that affect ALL States. I don't believe in "boundries" and go by the saying "united we stand, ".. I told the aide that I was very involved in this bill and the horses and was trying all avenues to get the word out, including calling all Senator offices.. She was greatly impressed with talking with me and my knowledge on teh bill issue.. and how hard I was working for something I believed in.

She said to me" " Gosh I wish more Americans would be like you and your Friends of Barbaro, Stand up for what you believe in and fight for it... More lawmakers would take notice if "we" got involved in laws and decesion making"...

She made my day!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kimberly,

If a person should abondonden there own horse, them maybe that person sould go to slaughter. Any caring person with a heart, would never do that. The world does no need these type of people. The sad part is that we all know that they are our there.

Maybe a LAW passed to put these people away for that kind of treatment to animals should be in affect.

We as people can help ourselves, animals need our help. That is why we need to pass S1915.

There is good and bad in everything!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kimberly,

It is impossible to kill horses for human consumption in a humane way. The reason is that the chemicals that are used euthansia are not acceptable for human consumption.
That is a fact and cannot be disputed.

No one has said that someone could not put their horse down....I think the key word in your post was DIGNITY. You sound like a caring person so I would have to think that you are not familiar with how these slaughterhouses operate. Do a little research into the way these horses die. Also, please do a little more research into how these horses are transported to slaughter. And then re-evaluate your opinion.

Our horses deserve more from us than a painful, frightening, horrendous end to their lives.

We must remember that not everyone has been as involved as we have. Many people are under the impression that it is a humane end of life. I believe it is up to us to lead them to the informaton and let them learn the truth.

Kimberly, please write again after you look into this.

Please read the following:

June 30, 2006 ? Colorado Springs, CO -- In the midst of a federal legislative battle regarding the fate of unwanted horses, nine university professors from four states report that a ban on horse processing would actually do more harm than good to horse welfare in this country.

The proposed Horse Slaughter Ban (H.R. 503) would also devastate the U.S. horse market by devaluing horses as much as $29 million or $304 per horse, according to the report released today. The analysis, ?The Unintended Consequences of a Ban on the Humane Slaughter (Processing) of Horses in the United States,? was commissioned by the Animal Welfare Council (AWC).

The report?s authors hail from prominent universities, including Texas A&M University, Cal Poly University, Utah State University, West Texas A&M University, University of Louisville and University of California at Davis. The report was presented by the Animal Welfare Council during briefings of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate, on June 20 in Washington, DC. Representatives of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) were in attendance to provide expert opinions as equine veterinarians. In opening remarks, Dr. Douglas Corey, President-Elect of the AAEP, commented to House and Senate members, ?We are here to talk about a horse welfare issue, but not the type of horse welfare issue you may think. This is about the consequences of removing a humane option for potentially tens of thousands of unwanted horses in this country.?

For more information, please see the following website: www.animalwelfarecouncil.com

Please note the name of this group. Animal WELFARE Council. This isn't a group of people with ties to the horse slaughter business. These are people that ultimately care about the well-being of the horses concerned. And the above text was taken from the American Quarter Horse Association website.

Your response to Kimberly was very well-stated. Anyone who feels slaughter is a "dignified" death for a horse is sadly ill-informed. I've been shocked that a few of my friends who are horse owners are also concerned about passage of this bill.
Anyone who can properly afford to keep a horse should SURELY be able to afford the average $250 it takes to have a veterinarian HUMANELY euthanize the animal and properly dispose of the remains. And frankly, a well-placed bullet is quick and cheap! As for the AQHA, AAEP and others, rather than continuing to promote slaughter as a dignified end to a horse's life, they need to look at alternatives--such as establishing a fund, much like their counterparts, the AAHA, did for the care of rescued Katrina animals. Abuse and neglect will continue in this society, whether horses can be legally slaughtered or not. Sad but true.

Keep up the fight and BELIEVE

THEN I called Sen. Frist, and, of course, I had to leave a voicemail, but this was 'great' for me because I was able to say what I wanted and needed to say ... and it was this:

After I expressed my support for S 1915 and encourage him to please use his influence to get it set on the calendar and to the floor for a vote, I ended with this:

Sen. Frist, I am going to leave you with a direct quote of yours ... "Surely the World's Greatest Deliberative Body Can Rely on Argument In the Light Of Day. Let's Keep working together, so I can send this bill to the House next month when Congress comes back into session." So, Sen. Frist, in other words, and please forgive me for saying this, BUT We Need You to Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and get S 1915 onto your calendar and to the floor for a vote as soon as congress reconvenes November 13th. Thank you very much, Senator and have a great day."

I then called Stevens, followed by Ensign's office (Mike)who said they are "getting inundated with calls from "Fans of Barbaro" ... YAH, I GUESS SO!!

Called Sens. Landrieu, Reed, Mitch McConnell (also getting lots of calls; very nice person on the phone); Sen. Harry Reid (also getting lots of calls); Inouye and YES, MARILYN, CA, I also called Conrad Burns' office expressing my support and vote and urging Sen. Burns to reconsider his position.

So that covers my two sens, the Big 7 plus Inouye and Burns!

Now I am going to follow up all of these with emails!!!

FANS OF BARBARO ... WE ARE MAKING QUITE A NAME FOR OURSELVES!!!! HAY, HAY, HAY!!!!

Kimberly,
I would not want to be a horse owned by you.

There is a very big difference in humanly put down with a good reason than brutaly killed and tortured. God Bless those you own.

Today is the first time I have been able to make calls from the office, as my bosses are out.

Mike in Senator Ensign's office said his ears are falling off from getting so many calls and he also needs his lunch or he might pass out. LOL

Has anyone been able to get through to Sen. Allen today???

I've tried several times and got a message each time. At the end of the message it advises you to call back and hangs up, I can't even leave a message.

Does anyone know a local number for him??

Thanks

Cheryl Jones
I am so excited that Senator Burns' aide mentioned my call. She listened so carefully; I really felt like I was in the presence of someone who was CHANGING HER MIND about slaughter. I was so glad to hear that she confirmed this in her conversation with you.

Chris...hmmmm, you have a good point there. Maybe this was the plan?

I posted that because the person has the incorrect information. The bill is not asking or holding any government agency financially responsible.

Thank you for addressing your concerns and allowing us to explain to you how all this would be handled.

The horses slaughtered comprise one percent of the population, about 90,000, and the majority of that number are stolen or bought under false pretenses from unsuspecting owners. These horses are not unwanted or old, the majority are healthy. Cavel (slaughterhouse in IL) General Manager Jim Tucker said, "Stressed horses result in an inferior product, and injured horses must be turned away." The argument that owners have no way of disposing of their horses is not a valid one because all they have to do is call a rescue farm or any of the organizations, arrangements can then be made. Please do not forget that about 900,000 horses die each year due to injuries or old age. Many owners losing their horse this way will want to replace their horse, so the 90,000 horses sent to slaughter would not even be sufficient to replace the ones lost due to natural causes.

If the slaughterhouses didn't exist, then we wouldn't have to worry about our horses being stolen.

The sad thing is that horses that meet their death other than a slaughterhouse are actually better off. I am saying this respectfully, not in a negative way, please visit or view the tapes of a slaughterhouse.

Please remember that many are trying to mislead the American people for the sole purpose of money. We have nothing to gain except peace of mind and give the horses their due respect. People with hearts do not abandon their pets.

Kimberly, I am glad you posted your view and hope that your curiosity will bring you to ask more questions. There are many knowledgeable persons here that would be more than happy to provide answers.

Cora, I spoke to a nice young lady in Senator Allen's office and was asked if I wanted to leave my name.

Renee... I guess Mike can't get TO his lunch, because his hands are so busy picking up the phone. :)
