Barbaro Updates: 114

updates are now here.

Update 913: No Barbaro update yet. It was another chilly morning this morning at Fair Hill, although there was more cloud cover. A lovely sunrise, just a shame it was appearing coming back from the second set (ok, clocks really do need to change). As suspected, a pretty busy morning. Quite a few breezers, one loose horse and just plenty of things going on.

It is nice to see New Zealand continue its Barbaro coverage: Barbaro has a good week.

Sue McMullen sent this regarding the recent sale of Shirocco, and the less than spectacular success of Godolphin in Europe this year:

We reported earlier this week that a sale had been agreed between Sheikh Mohammed and Baron Georg Von Ullman for the purchase of Shirocco and this has now been completed following a satisfactory veterinary report. The five-year-old son of Monsun has been retired and heads to Darley Hall Stud at Newmarket. Sheikh Mohammed's racing operation regard this attractive horse, winner of four Group 1s and described as having a 'fantastic temperament', as a great stallion prospect. They must also be hoping he will bring them some good fortune in what is by their standards, a very lean time at the top level. This year they failed to achieve even one Group 1 victory in the UK, the first time this had happened since the establishment of Godolphin in 1994. They have also been very unlucky with the death of their top horse Electrocutionist and now Iffraaj is to retire to Kildangen Stud in Ireland following a minor injury, plus Shawanda, the dual Group 1 winner purchased from the Aga Khan has also retired through injury without representing Godolphin on the racecourse. This classy daughter of mighty Sinndar was to be another star in their line-up and had been due to make an appearance for them in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, but although she had been reported as training well she went lame only hours before the race. Her previous appearance had been in last year's Arc, when she finished a valiant sixth but suffered a leg injury in the process. Shawanda will prove an immensely valuable addition to the paddocks.

Of course in the US, Godolphin is represented by Discreet Cat, and Bernardini is owned by Sheikh Mohammed (under the Darley banner rather than Godolphin).

Update 912: A quick reminder, the Barbaro update will likely be late morning again. Fair Hill will likely be quite busy this morning in anticipation of some wet weather coming through tonight, which will leave the dirt track either closed or in grim shape tomorrow.

The Daily Racing Form provides a quick update on some Breeders' Cup contenders preparing for a week on saturday: DRF Clocker Report: Thursday, October 26. I will try to catch up with a couple of the contenders today to see how things are going.

The Cushion Track at Hollywood Park is preparing to play host to its first meet: New 'Cushion Track' Attracts Out-of-Towners. This will be the second major racetrack in the US to adopt a synthetic racetrack. Lets hope the favourable reports from training over the track persist during the race meet.

Update 911: Rachel, from Kennett Florist left this comment (timestamp: 8:33 pm):

All is quiet at NBC today... I think they are recovering from the Halloween parade last night! They entered the parade (it's a judged event) as they have in the past. They have a miniature pony that in the past has been Smarty Jones, etc. He was dressed in a blue drape with fake casts on his hind legs... yep a Barbaro stand in! It was so cute. They had a little boy dressed in scrubs that had "Richardson" across the front and "but cuter and nicer" across the back! There was a little girl dressed as Edgar in the jockey outfit. They had adults carrying picket fences with get well posters all over them (representing the main entrance of NBC). They were also pulling a cart of flowers and carrots that had our logo on it! What a hoot! I hope someone got pictures for NBC, because mine came out really dark. It was a great night, even as cold as it was. Love, love, love this town!

We brought the big guy all his favs today!

Update 910: Peter Brette visited Barbaro again today, which is looking like the routine while Michael Matz is overseeing Round Pond's training at Keeneland. Peter took Barbaro out for a pick of grass, groomed him and changed his bandages. All remains comfortable.

Update 909: Just spoke to Steve Willard, Giacomo's exercise rider. All remains well with Giacomo as he gets ready for the Breeders' Cup Classic. Steve is very happy with the way Giacomo feels. He is training well, jogging a mile and galloping a mile and a half each day. He will likely work one more time, sometime this weekend. He will ship to Churchill either on the 29th or 31st of October. Once at Churchill they will likely paddock school him a little just to help him get used to his new surroundings (of course they are not entirely new, he is one for one at Churchill).

Update 908: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (wednesday night). I just spoke to Peter who had heard from Michael. Peter again plans to visit later today so hopefully I will catch up and get another later report too.

For those curious about the shipping plans for the Breeders' Cup for the european runners, here they are (from Sue McMullen):

I've just spoken to the IRB at Newmarket. The euro runners are travelling on three flights; two on Sunday, one of which carries the Godolphin horses and the other the rest of the euro runners apart from the Ballydoyle contingent, who fly on Tuesday (they usually travel a bit later than the rest).

So George Washington will be coming over on the tuesday flight next week.

#### A co-worker sent me this today and I thought I'd post since it gave me a chuckle with the parallels to all we've gone through with S1915 (plus it reminded me of Bazonka Donk, the rescued hinny!)

Lesson for Today!

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a
well. The animal cried piteously for hours as
the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the
well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and
help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began
to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the
donkey realized what was happening and cried
horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he
quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally
looked down the well. He was astonished at what
he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his
back, the donkey was doing something amazing.
He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel
dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it
off and take a step up.
Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey
stepped up over the edge of the well and
happily trotted off!

Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds
of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well
is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of
our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out
of the deepest wells just by not stopping,
never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

NOW .......
The donkey later came back, and bit the farmer who had tried to bury him. The gash from the bite got infected and the farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.

MORAL FROM TODAY'S LESSON:
When you do something wrong, and try to cover
your ass, it always comes back to bite you.

HAVE A GREAT DAY, EVERYONE!

Good Morning all!

Thank you Alex! Good boy, Barbaro. Another day of healing for you. Rest well, grow that hoof, stay strong. We love you SO much.

It is snowing here. Beautiful until people start sliding around on the roads. It very strange to be traveling well from my house near the foothills to an area about midway to my office. There things all went horribly wrong. Not a single plow, not a drop of mag sulfate, slush by the tons, icy puddles, people spinning, sliding, banging into each other. Fortunately my vehicle is big and wide, and is all-wheel, all the time, so it is pretty safe but it's pretty unnerving when a big ol' truck comes sliding down backwards at you. All turned out well, though Took me about an hour or so to travel five miles but I got here and turned my angst onto the senators' offices. :)

Will check back later. Love to all, prayers for all who need them (like you, LindaH :))

D'Anne...yep, poly is very different to dirt but it's very different to grass too, and he's adapted well to it, so I guess Aiden's hoping he'll adapt to the dirt too.
As he said, they really don't know what to expect and how he'll act on the dirt, and he also has a bit of extra distance in the Classic. They're taking a gamble and hoping it pays off, but if it doesn't at least they know they tried.
I know I've said this before, but I just want him safe, and that begins with the flight!

Shannon...see you at the races! :-)

### Good morning everyone,

Blizzard in Colorado today. Swift but nasty, get prepared all of you east of here.

### Dawn, wonderful story and so true.

Barbaro, sweetie, keeping healing and we will keep up this end. Always brings a smile to know you are doing well.

### LVBarb, sorry you feel neglected. I think we are all overlooked sometime here but it is about the bigger picture. Barbaro may not speak English, but he has spoken volumes about the will to live, the strength to fight and the determination to be more that we thought we were. He has given us a look inside ourselves. And, (my thoughts only) compassion is very sexy. Take care and please work with us.

### Linda H., prayers for you and hope you are doing well.

D'Anne...he's such a character, and he has an arrogance about him because he thinks he's royalty, but then being bred by the Jacksons qualifies him as just that! :-)

He does seem to have matured even more from his posing in the gate episode to his last race, which was the QEII. They were really expecting him to act up in the Celebration Mile (still can't find the video!) but he was on his best behaviour.

You're going to love him! :-)

I amk so excited we got a second fax machine at work that is really high tech and high speed. We have become faxing fools.

Cool thing is thatpeople who are too shy to call usually don't mind sending a fax with their name and adress in support of the bill. Many of my coworkers have been really wonderful.

So thankful for your comfortable night, and pray your day is comfortable too. You are such an intelligent horse, but I pray that you will continue to have patience as you heal.

I am happy that there are such wonderful people to bring you great treats, and give you loving pats on your velvet nose. Just remember that these are love pats, so please don't bite them. I am sure that your little nips are just your way of saying you love them, and appreciate their loving care.

To All:

Yesterday after I called everyone on Shelley A's list, I again called my two Georgia senators (whom I have been calling periodicaly).

I asked the aids who answered (after I made the pitch) as to whether they were getting many calls today (yesterday)-- I had called around 2;00PM --

"Not too many" was the reply. "Why should we be getting more?"

I explained that Oct 25 was National Call In Day. "That's curious." was the reply

Both senators (Isaakson and Chambliss are in favour; BUT have yet to co sponsor)

Bobby -- Every day in Every way you are getting better and better. Keep your spirits strong; and keep on keepin'

RE: Bobby's long road to recovery ---Dancing In My Dreams (the Phipps Filly) who was foaled and raised at Claiborne was at NBC for 13 months for her five surgeries and subsequent recovery., after a breakdown on the track. She is now a brood mare (Ch Dancing Forever) and lives at a very nurturing farm in Kentucky near Lexington. I can't quite recall the name.

Marky,

That's great that your co-workers are helping. We need more people. While this group can certainly make noise :) it's important that we spread out our support base.

If each one of us can get 5 or 10 other people involved and they can get 5 or 10 involved, it would be wonderful. I urge everyone to use their address books and ask people to make the call. You don't even have to go into detail (most people don't want to even hear the details) but tell them that this is an issue near and dear to your heart and would they PLEASE make a call, fax or e-mail.

I'm sure we have members out there that belong to some sort of group (book club, quilting, knitting...and kind of clubs) as well as those that have co-workers that might help. I've just asked people to do it as a favor to me.

Ro in Ohio got her 4H groups involved in making calls.

This group has been awesome. I just think if we try to expand our caller base, it would be even more helpful!!

Thanks for everything you do

Dawn, that's just great!

Daryl, my mom was an Arnie Palmer fan. When she was confined to a wheelchair, I got his autograph for her. When he walked around the corner of the clubhouse, she let out a shriek like a teenage girl ;) People flocked around him like a rock star. Like Tiger Woods today. Such a warm and wonderful gentleman.

###
Jo, I'm excited about George, too. The Churchill Downs dirt surface is tricky; some horses don't like it, even if they've run well on dirt on other tracks. I think you're a Sunday Silence fan(?), but I was for Easy Goer and he never handled that track in either the Derby or the Breeders Cup, which was run at CD that year. There could be some upsets in the making...I'm sentimental for Perfect Drift, my "horse with the ears," but of course just want all to run safely and competitively.

Jane...I've heard it mentioned before that Churchill Downs can be tricky, and they either love it or hate it. Why is the dirt there different to other dirt tracks? I'm hoping that George won't be phased and will love it!
As much as I love George, I have so many favourites in this race, and all the BC races. I'm just looking forward to seeing them run together, and finishing safely.

With Perfect Drift's ears, Premium Tap's tongue, Lava Man's funky perm, George's attitude, Bernardini's untouchability...I could go on and on...it's going to be a very exciting Classic! :-)

I had PRK 10 years ago before they had LASIK. Back then they had strict guidelines for who was eligible. With the newer better equipment I believe they are now doing people who just a few years ago weren't candidates.
Word of caution - don't go by price. They are YOUR eyes and deserve the best. I have heard horror stories about some of the $499 places so just check them out first, ok?

She was even on 60 min when they did a show about the surgery a few years ago. The industry keeps it very hush hush when there is a problem! Be careful! Otherwise, it's the best and the easiest. Precious Barbaro: Praying to our Father to give you a glorious day of healing and health. May He also give you calmness and inner peace on your road to recovery. You still have a long road ahead of you but it will be worth it when you get to go home with your parents, Papa Roy and Mother Gretchen.
Father, thank you for the "Miracle of Barbaro"

Lost in the Fog: My Eternal Angel horse....your candle is lit for today. Missing you, loving you and thinking of you always.
Father, thank you for "The Fog".

Barbaro Team: Praying for another glorious day for all of us. May our Father continue to guide us on this road that Barbaro is leading us thru. We will be victorious for our "horsey friends" and animal families. Father, thank you for bringing so many people into my life thru your magnificent creation "Barbaro". Please protect them, Father, and bless them daily.

My candles are lit for my boys.....

Mary S.--I have also been asking our Father to fill our Barbaro with peace and calmness on his road to recovery. Barbaro has done so well. Our angels are whispering words of encouragement to him as he faces each new day that will bring him closer to going home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson.

Praying for all that need healing and support thru any trials they may be facing. Please know that we are always close to you in our prayers and will not leave you.

Hello, Dearest Annointed One ... So glad that you had ACN last night and are continuing to heal and improve. Continued loving thoughts are with you, Sweet Barbaro!!
################################################

I have been reading some googled articles on the latest regarding The Breeders Cup races, especially The Classic at 1 1/4 miles. I'm simply overwhelmed by the depth of talent in this field ... and YES, INVASOR IS BACK IN!!

So, we have Bernardini and Lava Man and Invasor and Perfect Drift and George Washington and Lawyer Ron and David Junior and Giacomo and Flower Alley and and and. This is incredible and there is no way that it can or should be said by anyone that Bernardini will not face any competition in this race ... this race is overflowing with great speed, strength and talent ... except there is one entry missing.

But, while all eyes are on the Classic, all hearts will still be with our beloved Barbaro wondering, wondering, wondering what "might" have been ...

It's still a thoroughbred racing dream field and this should be quite a race ... one that will remain in our memories and our hearts forever ... Good Luck and Godspeed to All ...

Jo, it is odd about the track surface at CD. Maybe Alex knows why it's different? I hope they work George over it, at least. This race might be decided by an ear, a tongue, some hair follicles, a persistent attitude, sheer brilliance or...charging from the back of the pack...a late rush from Giacomo?? Hmmm, maybe that's why Alex keeps us updated so... ;) It's gonna be amazing, except for the one horse missing as Linnie said.

###
Lynda, when you first wrote you needed LASIX, I thought you wanted to run at Aqueduct! LOL

50 tough questions to ask a doctor about Lasik surgery:

(Practicing my link skills -- hope it works!)

LASIK

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at October 26, 2006 8:32 PM

LYNDA- I agree that you should have only the best working on your eyes. I had Lasik seven years ago when it cost a forune no matter where you went. Now many places are offering the surgery for rock bottom prices and I would be careful. You only have two eyes and any errors can not be remedied.

JEN - I am going to Breeders Cup as well.

Afternoon All!

WE BELIEVE!!

I had an interesting conversation with a young woman in Hutch's office (I know, but I called still again) Anyway, she said - I don't know why everyone is calling - you know they are not here right? I said yes, and explained why.. blah, blah, bottomline give the message, tally the calls so when they get back.... She said OH, well please feel free to call back when they are here too - but I will pass it along for now.

Also, I am going to a "house party" for Jim Henley (EX rep. Culberson's opponent) just to ask his thoughts/position on HS, and to "get the word out" so to speak. Say a prayer - until Bobby I have never been a "political activist" - don't feel I speak the lingo - but with Barbaro as my inspiration for courage, and the picture of Darlin in my heart I should be OK (but pray anyway).

Lynda - Do a lot of research. Ask questions. I watched a surgery being performed by my doctor, he suggest it to all of his potential patients. I spoke with the man fifteen minutes after his surgery. I debated for two months. I checked out the doctor with the state. Go with the best, not necessarily the most expensive. Most places have financing. It really will change your life. My eyesight was 400+ before, the next day it was already 20/80. Now I am 20/25 in one eye and 20/15 in the other. It took four months to stop trying to put lenses in and to stop reaching for glasses in the morning. Do not go with the first place and ask people in your area. Word of mouth is a great place to start.

LINDA H AND LYNDA P ...

Linda H; Are you serious? I just checked out the Lasik Vision Institute page and they are offering surgeries as low as $499 and even $299 if I qualify

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at October 26, 2006 7:28 PM

#################################################

JUST AN FYI ... Cost has come way down on this and you don't have to pay a fortune to get this done today ... I personally know people that paid $299 per eye and had no problems at all. One of the main differences is the extra benefits and frills, but all of the doctors who do this surgery MUST be board certified and you just need to know that beforehand. Also, find out how many of these surgeries this doctor/institute has performed and get references and call these people and ask them.

I know people that paid in the thousands of dollars and people who paid less than $1000 and both have successful results.

Also, there are several different types of corrective surgery and that changes the price also. Just collect information and do interviews with 3 different places and then make up your mind based on what you've seen, heard, learned and your own personal comfort level.

Our candles are over 1,000 for our Beloved Barbaro. Wonderful.

Some may ask why do we all have such a close link. Barbaro is such an inspiration, and has been a true fighter, full of life and spirit and has open a horizon that we all have came together as one loving family.

Mary S..my prayers are with you.

Everyone have a lovely evening..

I thank you personally for letting me be a small part of this happy family and for fighting such a wonderful cause.

We will get the anti-horse slaughter bill pass. We will find lovely homes, and volunteer, donate or whatever we can...We do give our very best, with open hearts.

Barbaro and his lovely family, The Jacksons have given us every reason to stand by and fight for the innocent, to give hope where hope is needed, to be a caregiver in all ways..

I thank you...plus Mr. Alex, you are a good man..

Isn't it wonderful living in a small town. Everything here centers around the village square. I can't wait to see the little ghouls and goblins at this year's Halloween parade on Saturday and then soon after the square will manifest itself into a living Christmas card.

Lynda Pellitteri-
Linnie is correct about the quality and pricing. Pricing has come down dramatically since it was introduced years ago. My nurse sister Mary had it done in Canada, by the Dr. who invented it. She was nearsighted all her life since she was a child, had to wear very thick glasses. She saw perfectly afterwards, but had the"halo" problem with lights at night afterwards. (BUT-that runs in my family also, nightblindness= auras or halos) She consequently has to wear her eyeglasses at nighttime to drive. She is so silly, and loved her glasses so much-she prefers them anyway!! I have a nutty family, as you can tell by moi!

THE LONG WALK TO FREEDOM...
my trip to sOuth africa, introduced me to a deep vein of faith that came
right out of their land and their people..their plants and their animals
.....the many tribes, the dutch, the english, the french, the
germans..all melted into the red and green dusty hills..for miles..
,...the sun filtering through gnarled trunked trees.
.. the limbs, filled with creatures..new chirps and barks and
whinnies.around the clock...
as with another big event in my life, the death of princess Diane,
i realized some things never die..the values of life are not ended in
death
...THE FOG..PRECISIONIST, JUNE SECOND,DARLIN.,BELLE,. AND thousands of
horses that never were heard ..
nelson mandela's long tortuous residence in an island prison..harsh
..bitter..sparse...only the sound of ocean breaking on the concrete
piers..sea birds, and winds tossing spray onto the walls..living in
dampness and darkness.days,months,years..in silence from the outside
world..it seemed no one cared or heard for years..the horse nation
...could relate..in a way..the metaphor..all the quiet suffering...is
what i mean..not to compare..apples and oranges..but..it strikes me..
so in the fabric of these memories
what does it take to get the job done???
..--rules of civilization.
education
..we have to communicate with fierce grace and compassion and
understanding . end of story
...or history has shown that we will all be tossed away..in another
layer of refuse.
....dreams ruined and crushed..
..AS s1915 ,is tossed about in the hands of regional politicians, who do
and dont care WE KEEP ON ..great job everybody..wow...
welll done ..from all the posts i read last night into the wee hours,
...and my own efforts to tackle the often silly, enfuriating commentary
from those i can not understand..
well lets do it again..
keeping the integrity of the site..and the honor of being able to
communicate with each other
...is some kind of gift
.. FROM the kennett florist family to the increadible staff at NBC and
all the reporters..who do get it..and MIke C.
his compassionate skill showing in his writing..

My kitchen smelled beautiful I kept thinking I wished I could invite you and all my new FOB friends to dine with me. YES, DEAREST JO ... I DID AND I RESPONDED ...

Lynda - The surgeon I used was the one that my regular doc recommended. I started to do my research and found that four people I know had used him. When I met my husband he had my surgeons info, he was considering the surgery then. Two of his friends had used the doc too. Don't just jump into it. It is good that you are asking all these questions. I too have halos at night and some problems with bright lights at night when it is raining. There are so many little things that you may get, but the good way outweighs the bad.

All you gals are welcome to come and eat, but so sorry to inform you that me and the dad and the boyfriend done et all them vittles up!! BUT---- I DID make spaghetti, albeit not from fresh, but I added so much fresh garlic, shallots, mushrooms and cooked that Bertolli olive oil & garlic sauce dang near to death to make it less acidic for me and the dad's stomach probs(Ulcers, hiatal hernias etc) It is UMMMM good too!! YUMMMM I sitll have loads left. I am used to cooking for 6-12 folks. When my mama was alive my family and my aunt's fmily ate together every week. I had to learn, as my sister's did, to cook for a crowd (12 or more) I do not even know how to cook for two! My dad gets furious with me I have so much leftovers!! COME ON DOWN, I WILL HEAT IT UP AND RUN GET SOME ITALIAN BREAD FOR SCRAPING PLATES WITH...YUMMY

Lynda

I know some people get halos but I didn't. I actually saw better at night that I did before the surgery.
