Barbaro Updates: 116

updates are now here.

Update 927: No update yet this morning for Barbaro, but all was well yesterday. I saw Peter this morning and he is planning on visiting Barbaro after work, so I will try to catch up with him later to get today's update.

I have a new project, her name is Hawty Creek. She is owned by a friend and came in to Judge's barn for a couple of months to get fit. I rode her out back today. Since she has not been ridden for a while we did not do too much. After she cooled out I turned her out in the porta pad, and of course she rolled. She got very muddy. Some of which I have now removed. The rest will come off tomorrow when i get her ready to train!

Update 926: Horseracing in the US faces many problems from a marketing standpoint. Perhaps the introduction of synthetic tracks will solve some of those problems and at least make the sport a little more attractive to the casual fan. Another problem is the economics of campaigning a top horse. It makes too much sense to retire them and breed from them. It has been speculated that this fate will end the brilliant, yet very short, career of Bernardini before he is likely to be at his very best: Enjoy Bernadini while you can.

The Fair Hill Halloween Party was fun. No update yet for Barbaro since yesterday morning, but I will endevour to get an update later this morning.

Update 925: An easy win for McDymano in the Breeders' Cup Steeplechase: McDynamo Does It Again In Breeders' Cup Steeplechase. I am now off to the Fair Hill Halloween Party, so no Barbaro update this evening, although that is not unusual for a weekend.

Update 924: A quick reminder, Barbaro vigil at 7 pm, every saturday. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, spare some time for Barbaro.

Update 923: A nice win today for Real Lace, who broke her maiden at Laurel. She had a nice confident ride from Luis Garcia. Here is the chart. She seems to have come out of her race well. Congratulations to Equivine Farm.

Update 922: Joe Deegan just called. He breezed Perfect Drift this morning, 5/8ths in 1:02 and change. It was what they wanted for the breeze, a nice maintenance breeze. Enough to keep him ticking over. He is obviously plenty fit enough. He cooled out well after his work. He will walk tomorrow, which is usual after a breeze. This was also reported in the Bloodhorse: Perfect Drift, the Old Warrior, Tunes Up for Classic.

Update 921: For images of horses getting ready for the Breeders' Cup go to HorsePhotos.com For the last two days they have featured Lisa Davison, yesterday on Better Talk Now, today on Film Maker.

Update 920: As we close in on the Breeders' Cup we should not forget there is actually a Breeders' Cup race today: McDynamo chasing history in Breeders' Cup Grand National Steeplechase. Of course McDynamo is by Dynaformer, father of Barbaro.

Update 919: I just spoke to Lisa Davison, who galloped both Better Talk Now and Film Maker this morning at Keeneland. All remains well with both, they galloped about a mile and a half - mile - 1 mile 5/8ths. They are both scheduled to work tomorrow. Lisa will work Better Talk Now, Fen is flying in to work Film Maker. Fen is Film Maker's regular exercise rider, but stayed behind at Fair Hill.

It was windy and brisk this morning at Keeneland after the rain had moved through. Of course the rain really had no impact on the training surface (as it would on a dirt track). Lisa said, if anything, it just makes the track a little tighter, which is a good thing. The other thing Lisa noted was the lack of a need for a renovation break. With a dirt track you need to have a break to harrow the track at some stage of the morning so the track is more usable. Since the synthetic track does not have any kickback, there is really no need to have it harrowed, it remains pretty much the same all morning.

It is interesting to note in this article re: horses working this morning at Keeneland, preparing for the Breeders' Cup that at least one horse shipped in from Churchill Downs: Keeneland's Polytrack Popular With Breeders' Cup Hopefuls on Saturday, an excerpt:

Trainer Dallas Stewart shipped Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Lemons Forever from Churchill Downs to work over the Polytrack instead of training on Churchill's muddy dirt surface. Coming off a fourth-place finish in the Oct. 8 Spinster Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland, the 3-year-old daughter of Lemon Drop Kid went five-eighths in :59 and 4/5 under exercise rider Lee Guidry.

"Her work was excellent," Stewart said. "She was crisp and clean; everything was perfect."

Update 918: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (friday night). I went over to Michael Matz's barn and caught up with Peter Brette, he had heard from Michael.

Morning training was predictably pretty much a loss. I shedrowed four, I am guessing that's what most people did. It looks like the rain has blown over, the sun is trying to get out, and the wind is picking up. I guess decent Halloween weather. There is a Fair Hill Halloween Party tonight, I think I will go in my Eagles T. O. shirt!

WOW - I just watched the Lost in The Fog video - he was as dominant as Secretariat - never thought I'd say that.

He won most of his races like Bobby won the derby.

May he rest peacefully.

ALEX -

You are the greatest!

Have you noticed that we are learning to be patient and trust you when we don't hear about Barbaro?

For you to go over and check on Barbaro to put us at ease, you are amazing. We hope you will be allowed to visit with Barbaro so that you can give us one-on-one report about him and make us feel closer to him.

Posted by: Socorro at October 28, 2006 4:05 PM

THANKS ALEX!
We always love our update! I hope big boy has a good day.
I'm not sure if he can go out when it's wet even if the rain has stopped. I'm doubt Dr wants that left hoof getting wet. If he can't go out today I'll bet his mon will see that he gets fresh picked grass from the farm!

Just checking in while getting the house ready to be appraised (can you say deep clean).

Mary L, THANKS for the info on the beanie babies. I too was a collector and have the tag covers, they're all in boxes now. Remember the McDonald's craze with them?? They are cute!

OK, I only do canned speghetti sauce and I am in dire need of something "real". Can someone start a thread on the forum to place recipes? I don't know how to do that and that would be a great way to share. Just a thought.

Bye and take care all.

Vigil at 7 pm EST this evening.

When we pray for Barbaro, and focus on his physical healing, I humbly ask you to include prayers for his peace of mind and continued courage. His is a difficult path.

Thank you God, that right and perfect decisions are made by Barbaro, and for Barbaro.

Also, in light of our vigil this evening, I thought it might be helpful to repost this article, Doc Steady about Dr. Richardson - it tells us part of what Bobby is dealing with, and the seriousness of the day to day.

Dear Alex -
Thanks again for another update which starts our days. I just want to really tell you how much you are appreciated and thought about. It has been a tense few months for us, praying and hoping that Barbaro will recover and be able to enjoy a rich life. Perhaps not the life envisioned before the race, but an even better one. He is has truly opened our eyes to the importance of horses. His name will be forever linked with strength, courage, endurance, fellowship and love not only for his Kentucky Derby win, but also in the race of life.

I know the road ahead is still a long one, but I've lots of prayers left for him and will keep saying them.

Thanks as always to you, Dr. Richardson, the NBC staff, the Jackson, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, and Kennett Florist and all the others giving of their time and support to see him reach the most important finish line - returning home.

I just wanted to say a word about Erin, Annie's daughter (KF floral designer). Erin is in the backstretch with her treatments, and has done well tolerating them. I know this is in part, due to the mighty prayers we have all offered for her. Please keep this beautiful child in your prayers.

Thank you God for the opportunity to show our faith for all of those in need. The list may be long, but we are a powerful group, and up to the task of supporting all of them with prayer.

Today is St.Judes Feast Day.
My patron Saint along with St.Francis.
Many prayers for Barbaro's recovery went to both of them, but especially St Jude.
When most people thought Barbaro was a hopeless case( and were saying this horse should be put down,God had a different plan.
And we see the results of the Miracle of Barbaro.
So many poor Horses have been Rescued , so much attention has been brought to the horrid Slaughter of these beautiful creatures.
Because of Barbaro and now the FOBS.
Thank you Jacksons,Dr Richardson,NBC,TIM & ALEX for having the faith to say YES WE WANT THIS HORSE TO LIVE.
And I say "Thank you St.Jude "
WE BELIEVE IN MIRACLES !!!!!
WE BELIEVE IN BARBARO !!!!!!!!

God Bless you, and everyone who loves you, and that is alot of Bararo Maniacs and then ofcourse team Barbaro! Keep fighting the good fight, you really are a champion! No matter who gets horse of the year, you are the horse of the year, decade and the century! I loved the Today show report on you, I taped it and watch it often! They say that the eyes are windows to the soul and that is certainly true in your case, your eyes are so bright and alive and full of courage and determination, the very things that made you a winner on the race track and are now helping you to beat the odds and win over adversity! I believe in miracles and I believe in Barbaro!!!

Dora, thank you for posting the info about Martita, who is too shy to tell us about her wonderful dancework ;)

Prayers and hugs for all humans and animals who are in need of love and healing today. I see Avi and Cahill mentioned just today...

###
Alex or anyone who is "hands on" with horses, why do you sometimes see horses that are two-toned in the winter? Looks like they visited Dora for a color and clip ;) Half of them is dark brown and the other half is lighter brown?

###
Cindy a
I have a killer recipe for herbed oyster crackers. I've never met anyone who doesn't like them, though they probably aren't great for one's arteries ;)

Now, to "business": The other day I posted about a story on the front page of my local paper about a woman who rescues Premarin mares. I faxed them a letter and today was excited to see it in the paper, no easy feat when there are so many political letters now pro/con different candidates. (I borrowed the opening from someone here who offered it to me.) They printed it virtually intact except for taking out the web links.

So I apologize for the length of this, but here goes (I thought I read that the call-in day was 11/14? If I got it wrong in this letter, sorry but hay, that makes all the more calls (I hope) on the 14th, too!)

To whom it may concern:

The article in Tuesday's Post about Kathleen Schurman's efforts to save mares from slaughter could not have been more timely. At this moment, Senate bill 1915, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, is stuck in the Senate Commerce Committee. This bill would ban the slaughter of Premarin mares and other horses that are being sold to foreign countries as horsemeat.

Along with many others, I have been active in calling the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Frist, and asking him to move this bill to the floor, so that the Senate can vote on it before this session ends. Our state is fortunate in that both Senators Lieberman and Dodd have co-sponsored this legislation, and Rep. Shays also stood up on the floor of the House in support of it when its counterpart, HR503, was passed on September 7th.

It is America's dirty little secret that the pony that a little girl falls in love with may one day end up on a European or Asian dinnerplate as gourmet food. Every day, horses are bought under false pretenses by killer buyers, whom legitimate horse-rescue organizations such as Ms. Schurman's Locket's Meadow Farm must outbid in order to save from a gruesome death that pro-slaughter advocates dare to call "humane euthanasia." A horse that is stolen has a 60% chance of going to slaughter. A foal with a deformity may be cast aside and slaughtered instead of being raised as a companion animal to be used in therapy for children who immensely benefit from being able to relate to another living creature with limitations.

The videos showing slaughter are too graphic to watch, yet advocates such as Montana Senator Conrad Burns maintain that this method of "disposing of unwanted property" upholds Americans' right to do with their property as they see fit. Well, I have a lawn and a car, but the laws don't allow me to let the lawn grow up into weeds or the car to sit next to the curb as a rusted wreck. With "rights" come responsibilities. If you own a horse, you have a responsibility to treat it humanely. If you can't afford the cost to properly euthanize it, should that be necessary, you shouldn't own it to begin with.

November 14th will mark the second of two national call-in days to support S.1915. I urge everyone with a conscience and a sense of humanity to contact friends and relatives in other states, particularly Texas and Illinois where the three American slaughterhouses are located, to in turn contact their senators by phone, email or fax and support the passage of this legislation. Contact information for all senators can be found at: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm. More information can be found at www.hsus.org.

Two years ago, December 13th was officially proclaimed as "National Day of the Horse." Since that day, nearly 200,000 American horses have died brutally by having a bolt slammed through their brains as they struggled in horror, surrounded by the stench of death. Horses are a symbol of America. Just as we don't eat cats or dogs, we don't eat horses. Don't let foreigners dine on our animals. It only adds insult to injury to know that in a recent year, one of the slaughterhouses paid only $5 in taxes on their $12 million-dollar profit.

I wonder how many little girls inspired by movies like "Flicka" know the truth--that on any given Monday or Thursday, another 200 horses held in feedlots in Kaufman, Texas, will be "processed" for slaughter because our government had the audacity to honor horses while simultaneously condoning the brutality of their deaths. Please don't let this horror continue.

(BTW, they headlined the letter "'Dirty little secret slowly being revealed'") And maybe I played a bit loose with the 200,000 number--I think I learned that by watching the games they play in Congress ;)

Good day, all!

Hi Jo and Socorro

I'm down in Devon - probably could see the sea if I stood on my roof. As it is there is a hill in the way.

That looked a nasty fall - didn't look good did it? Usually the presenters tell you how the horse is and when they don't I think it's a bad sign. Hurdle races can be worse than steeplechases, because the hurdles can trip the horses.

I have an ambivalent attitude towards the jumping season. I love the horses and with good luck they are around for years so you get to know them much better than the flat ones. But I don't like the falls and I as I get older I find I'm getting worse, not better. I always feel most sorry for the lads and lasses who look after the horses as if there is a fatality they have to go back to the yard to the empty box. People in the racing business must be made of strong stuff - I think in the main they are compassionate people who are in it because they love horses. National hunt racing is far less lucrative than the flat and the jockeys get hurt too.

Alex or anyone who is "hands on" with horses, why do you sometimes see horses that are two-toned in the winter? Looks like they visited Dora for a color and clip ;) Half of them is dark brown and the other half is lighter brown?

they grow a winter coat, and I would assume (I know, that's dangerous) that the winter coat is 'drier' as the air, skin, etc. in winter is. Less oil in the hairs would help create the lighter color.

of course, I could be waaaayyyy off on this!

Lynda...I don't think it's unusual for a steeplechase horse to run on the flat. Wasn't Teton scratched from that last race? Collier Hill did a bit of jumping and now just does the flat races.

Jane...when a horse is clipped you get that two-tone effect.

Liz...I didn't see the actual fall (thank god!) just the jockey-less horse with a very bad looking front leg :-(
Also in that race I hated the way the jockey was whipping your Kingscliff when he so obviously had nothing left to give! This happens a lot in steeplechasing...it's as though the jockey becomes frantic (the riding styles of some are far from pretty on the home stretch) and forgets the horse isn't a machine.

I didn't want to watch any more.

Thoughts on a cook book, we could do that. Proceeds to go to the Barbaro horse rescues all of them, or to the Barbaro Fund.

Don't get too excited. My kitchen is kind of a combo of high tech and retro. The major appliances are old friends, 1970's models, harvest gold, Tappan and Kenmore, BUT I do have a sleek little black wine cooler. LOL
Hubby knows if the fridge ever goes out I want a Viking to replace it. Fortunately, I have a VERRRY nice hubby, who also happens to double as my sous-chef.
Any time he sees me eyeballing a new gadget, he gets it for me. I make pretty near everything from scratch, the machines make life a lot easier doing things my hands can't, plus they can all work independently and I don't have to baby sit them.

Debbie L.A.

My girlfriend was an information operator for the phone company. They did compile and publish a cookbook. Everyone donated recipes, they had it printed and then sold it.

Problem with my recipes is that I don't measure much. Makes it hard to write down. I recently wanted a better whole grain roll recipe than I was finding, so I started experimenting. That is one of the few I actually used measurements for.

Tonight we do set our clocks back an hour. Next year we will not be doing it till November. They passed a law. For real, I am not joking.

About horse coat color-peoples hair in winter has old summer hair mixed with new growth of winter hair/coat. Lighter portions can be attributed to sun damage. Sun lightens hair/coats of all mammals. Cats/dogs also have that same problem, their coats seem thicker and abnormally colored, they have a "nap" like a carpet. I would imagine the darker the coat, the more obvious it appears. I know it is this way with humans/cats/dogs/goats I have been around all year.

Posted by: Dora J Crow / Montgomery, Alabama at October 28, 2006 5:08 PM

D'Anne:

I had my Viking mixer before Emeril got one. LOL He even picked the same color I did. You should have seen me when we first saw him with it. "JOHN, THAT'S MY MIXER, HE'S GOT MY MIXER!!!!!"

I never said I was normal, but I do love that machine, and the processor!!! It makes the current "store models" look like cheap junk. I even make my gyro meat in that processor (Alton Brown's recipe if anyone is interested).

Cora-I really do not measure, unless I am following somebody elses recipe. My mama never did either, it really is a bad habit. My new stove is a high btu black/stainless Kenmore. Quite gorgeous it is, but that black shiny top is murder to keep clean. One speck of dust-it looks like you never clean at all. OOOHH!! We used to have an antique O'Keefe & Merritt stove. Loved it! here is a url to see what it looked like-middle picture :http://www.antiquegasstoves.com/pages/pictures40.html
My mom & dad bought it used from someone moving in 1960, it was those folks only stove they ever had. It was from 40's I think. It was porcelain ceramic, white, with silver that was EASY to clean up!! The ovens got to where they did not work properly. The top was fine, but I needed a stove that stayed on, not go out in middle of cooking whole chickens!!

Sunday marks end of daylight savings time

October 27, 2006

Boston-area residents and others across the country can look forward to an extra hour of sleep as clocks turn back one hour in observance of daylight savings time at 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

THIS IN BOSTON GLOBE ABOUT NEXT YEAR TIME CHANGE

The time shift occurs twice per year in North America: one hour is lost on the first Sunday in April, and the hour is gained back on the last Sunday in October. This policy was enacted by the Uniform Time Act in 1966.

Lawmakers made recent changes that will extend DST four to five weeks beginning in 2007. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 will change DST?s duration from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday in November. Those in favor of the change said the US will save on energy costs by taking advantage of the extra hour of sunlight during the extended period.

When we bought this house, everything was gold except the range hood. It was avocado-BLECCHHH!!! We painted it gold right away. My counters are a color similar, but more neutral than harvest gold. In a country kitchen, with paneling on the lower half, eggshell white walls above with blue trim and pink roses, the gold appliances actually look pretty neat.

It would be great if we could get this cookbook done. It sounds pretty easy from your post above. I want you to start working on your measurements though. I'm no cook and I don't even try a dish if I can't get exact measurements! Then sometimes it's a flop!

Emeril didn't learn from me.
I have never seen anyone so in love with butter and fats like he is. Have you ever seen him "stir fry"? When he's done, there's a big soupy mess in the bottom of the wok. Anytime he makes something that sounds good, I find myself "cleaning things up a bit", just to lower the fat content.

Congratulations on getting your wonderful, lengthy letter-to-the-editor printed in your local paper. (4:37 pm) It was terrific; and the best thing about it is that not only did the paper give you a soapbox to educate the readers about horse slaughter, but you were also able to instruct the readers to call Senator Frist and their own senators about the slaughter. Great job!

CORA-When my mom was alive, we diligently used it every day. The oven was too small, griddle knob broke off, BUT It was so easy to clean. It would gleam and shine like nobodys business when cleaned up. My mom removed the hood cover off of it. but ours had ceramic porcelain on backsplash. It was so pretty. She tried twice to buy different stoves, putting our monstrosity into shed. All newcomers were totally gross, they went back to store and out came monster old faithful. And we'd sigh and say, why did we try anyway?

After she died in 1988, I kept having problems with oven. I would be cooking away,or so I thought. Oven would be cold as a stone. To refurbish stove, it would have had to be sent to that place I showed you. That stove weighs more than a car! We had to have floor reinforced to put it in our old kitchen! Do you know I still kept it anyway for YEARS, til I could not stand it any longer. For 5 years I comparison shopped. I wanted a 6 eye Stainless Jenn-Air (I think) gas stove that I had seen at Sears, but it cost almost as much as a Viking. It was out. I got the blk/stless one on sale, with cpns and almost say I love it, not really. I love the IDEA of it. Very pretty but vacuous,no substance. It probably weighs 2 lbs.HA.

I never cried so much as when the goodwill took away my O'Keefe & Merritt stove. I let them pick up while I was gone, I knew I would not let them have it otherwise. SORRY FOR THE LONG POST.

I have a "Killer" meatloaf recipe but is has half & half, eggs and breadcrumbs. You need all these to bind the ingredients together. I suppose you could substitute egg whites and a lower fat milk.
What make it so good are the veges, red onion, scallion, carrot, celery, red & yellow bell peppers, and the seasonings, garlic, cumin, cayenne, S&P. I served it to my high end clients and they have loved it.

I remember the wood stoves. I'm 50, so I never cooked on one but I had an old aunt who did. She was born in 1895 and used that wood stove till she died in 1970. He son bought her a gas stove in the 60's but she wouldn't use it. My cousin got the woodstove when she died and his wife uses it sometime. You really need to know what your doing to cook on it, it's an art.

Socorro-Mason-Dixon Line from Infoplease.com

Mason-Dixon Line, boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland (running between lat. 39°43'26.3"N and lat. 39°43'17.6"N), surveyed by the English team of Charles Mason, a mathematician and astronomer, and Jeremiah Dixon, a mathematician and land surveyor, between 1763 and 1767. The ambiguous description of the boundaries in the Maryland and Pennsylvania charters led to a protracted disagreement between the proprietors of the two colonies, the Penns of Pennsylvania and the Calverts of Maryland. The dispute was submitted to the English court of chancery in 1735. A compromise between two families in 1760 resulted in the appointment of Mason and Dixon. By 1767 the surveyors had run their line 244 mi (393 km) west from the Delaware border, every fifth milestone bearing the Penn and Calvert arms. The survey was completed to the western limit of Maryland in 1773; in 1779 the line was extended to mark the southern boundary of Pennsylvania with Virginia (present-day West Virginia). Before the Civil War the term ?Mason-Dixon Line? popularly designated the boundary dividing the slave states from the free states, and it is still used to distinguish the South from the North.

I DID NOT KNOW THIS!! VERY INTERESTING!!

With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week.

Larry LaPrise, the man that wrote "The Hokey Pokey" died peacefully at the age of 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.

Shush..
You know its funny :) Just a little giggle before the races!

To all of you with horrible weather, do not feel bad it has been raining here in the Sunshine State on and off since last night. We are getting the very outer effects of the storm from up north. It is a crappy gray day, we all have that in common today.

Debbie, your right. She is pretty funny, she was sitting here looking at me with top soil all over her nose, so I went looking, I found my plant all turned up with a pizza crust sticking out of it. Guess its time for hide and seek!

Posted by: Shannon & Zeena at October 28, 2006 7:28 PM

Lawmakers made recent changes that will extend DST four to five weeks beginning in 2007. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 will change DST?s duration from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday in November. Those in favor of the change said the US will save on energy costs by taking advantage of the extra hour of sunlight during the extended period.

Thanks for the info, Dora .. it's just my 2 cents but I think it should be the other way around.

We need the extra hour of daylight in the winter months because that's when it tends to get dark earlier anyway; the summer usually gives us more daylight time to use. Personally, I don't like it getting dark so early in the day during the winter, so if they were going to extend the DST by 4/5 weeks, they should have tacked it on at the end of the year, rather than going back to March when Spring is coming and daylight is already becoming longer each day.

Does anyone else agree? Disagree? Don't Care? LOLOL

Posted by: Linnie at October 28, 2006 7:29 PM

Debbie L.A. - A big apology that was supposed to be for Mary Langkamp, too much going on. Sorry.

Shannon - How did the pizza crust end up in the plant? I know Zeena is funny. She goes fishing from an RC boat and I saw those photos of her in her seat belt. You know I am kidding with you though, right? You are pretty funny yourself.

Posted by: Debbie B from Miami, Fl at October 28, 2006 7:34 PM

Linnie - I totally agree. I hate it when it gets dark here by 5:30 pm. Just too early for that.

You could have two sections for the cookbook. Horse terms here:

"In Training" for the more healthy dishes

I LOVE THIS CONCEPT, SKY!!

Over on the Neil Diamond Board, they did a cookbook of all dessert recipes and they named the book "Crunchy Granola Sweets" after one of Neil's songs titled "Crunchy Granola Suite" .... just a different 'take' on the last word. All of the recipes in the book were named after Neil's songs over the years. They typed it up themselves and put it all into a 3 ring binder and then 'sold' them for $20 each. All of the proceeds were then donated to the Jennifer Diamond Foundation - in memory of Neil Diamond's niece.

I do NOT bake AT ALL ... NO DESSERTS because I am the WORLD'S WORST DESSERT/CAKE/COOKIE BAKER. But I did buy a book just to make the donation. I've never even opened it but the recipes are all terrific ones.

I DO like to cook, though ... BUT I am a very healthy 'chef' these days ... only healthy meals out of my kitchen but I can still make them "Barbarolicious" so I'll be happy to contribute to the recipes.

And, may be that's a good name for the book ... "Barbarolicious!!"

Posted by: Linnie at October 28, 2006 7:37 PM

Yeah, it's gray up here in Delray Beach today ... I'm not at all surprised to read that you ordered both versions of the Barbaro Beanie ... I just knew that you would! I'm not a collector, and after Mary pointed out the differences, I went back to take another look and I definitely prefer the rarer Kentucky Store version so that's the one I put on my Wish List for B'day and Xmas!! I'm glad that Mary let us know (THANKS SO MUCH MARY L) because I wouldn't have even noticed after only seeing the lesser priced one yesterday. But the Store Version is really really beautiful and worth the extra money for sure!

WHOA, WHOA, WHOA ... JO ...

Now THAT'S a PICTURE-PERFECT way to spend the nights IF they are cold and dark WITH snow falling outside AND you are snuggled in front of a crackling fireplace. I AM ALL WITH YOU FOR THAT ONE, JO! THAT IS MY DREAM!

But you need to see the alternative down here ... "HoHum", which means "Hot and Humid" ... well maybe NOT as hot as the summer but still temps can be in the mid-80s in December and there is NO snow on the ground, white or otherwise, it is not crisp and cold outside and anyone down here who has a crackling fireplace going needs to be hospitalized for taking hallucinogenic drugs! Either "that" or they have their A/C turned down to 40 degrees, if that's even possible! LOLOL

I LOVE your description, Jo .... along with Hot Buttered Rum and a romantic, passionate man by your side ... Now THAT'S Picture Perfect! And probably a 'figment of my imagination' and I should ALSO be committed for hallucinogenic drugs!!!

Well you must take lots of pics, Debbie, but I can relate to a shrine very easily ... you should see my Office/Den ... it is SHRINED to the MAX with memorabilia/souvenirs, etc. from all of my Heroes ... Frank Sinatra, Neil Diamond for the music; Secretariat, Barbaro, Mickey Mantle, the Yankees, Joe Namath, the Jets, and Muhammad Ali for the sports, and "My Boy, BRILLIANT BILL" for politics! All of these people/animals are proudly displayed in all four corners of this room BUT there is not ONE SQUARE INCH OF WALL SPACE LEFT FOR ANYTHING ELSE ... NOTHING! I have re-arramged and moved and transferred as much as I can and there is nothing left for me to change, remove, add on my walls. And I mean they are covered from ceiling to almost the floor! LOLOL

But I love looking at all of it ... it inspires me. I can't even put up that gorgeous poster we got at Calder of Bobby because there is just no place to put it ... believe me I have tried to envision somewhere but I would have to remove other things that I also love to do that ...

SO .... I've come up with the answer ...

The Great Chicago Bears who are having one heck of a year so far!!!! We got Brian Urlacher!!! All great players and all great people. Then to the north of me up in Green Bay ya got Brett Favre.

You folks up in Pennsylvania have the horse racing corner of the world we in the midwest have the football corner of the world. Although I have to confess that back in the day of the Great Pittsburgh Steelers I was a Steeler fan.

Thank you Alex, as always, for everything you do to keep us updated on our precious Barbaro. You are amazing and so generous with your time. Have a great time at the Halloween party tonight. You most certainly have earned some good ole R&R!

Barbaro, sweet boy, I hope you have a wonderful, rejuvenating day. Enjoy your bath and maybe the weather will cooperate so you can go outside and graze for a while. I know you're probably getting very used to those daily excursions, and I hate to think of you being disappointed if you can't go outside. Not to worry though, as members of your family will come to visit, and Mom Jackson will bring you some fresh, tasty grass! It does my heart good to know that you are so loved and well taken care of! Hot Buttered Rum Cocktail Recipe courtesy Emeril Lagasse, 2002
Show: Emeril Live
Episode: Butter Is Better

1 stick unsalted butter, softened
2 cups light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
Pinch ground cloves
Pinch salt
Bottle dark rum
Boiling water

In a bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Refrigerate until almost firm. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the butter mixture into 12 small mugs. Pour about 3 ounces of rum into each mug (filling about halfway). Top with boiling water (to fill the remaining half), stir well, and serve immediately

Hope that Emeril does not mind. Sounds horrible to me.

Deb, Nope no mudslides, but I did enjoy a Dr Pepper once in awhile ( ok alot of them )

1 pint glass only fill halfway using 1/2 coke and 1/2 beer.

Fill a shot glass with one ounce of Amaretto

Plunk the shot glass into the pint and bottoms up. It fizzes so much it tastes just like Dr Pepper.. and its a very fun and quick way to forget your name and where you are. LOL

Mary L. - Thank you again for the link to the beanie baby Barbaro's. I thanked someone else by accident. I ordered both of them.

As for the Chicago Bears. They are my team too. I was born in Oak Park, Illinois, but my parents moved back to Miami when I was young. I have always been a Bears fan though. They have been really great for the past couple of years, making up for all of those horrible years after the Super Bowl.

Debbie last year I got to go to the game on Christmas Day up in Green Bay when Da Bears clinched the North division. I never in a million years thought I would ever get to go to a Packer/Bear game but I did. What an experience. I do have to say that when they did Lambeau over that place is beautiful now. Didn't even know I was going to that game til Christmas morning. See we know some of the peeps from Da Bears and we got our tickets from Tony the Chicago Bears equipment manager. What a game and what an experience we had to pay him for the tickets after the game so we went over by where the buses were for the players. We got to see those division champions shirts right away. The guys always have a camper in the parking lot where they have those great Chicago Vienna Beef hot dogs, chips, pop and booze. We had such a great time. Did you ever get to come to Platteville when Da Bears were here?? I miss them so much. I got to meet so many kewl people while they were here. Fans, players, coaches just lots of people and I miss them all. I also got to meet alot of very famous people. Use to talk to Jim McMahon all the time he was my favorite of all times. I use to give Brian Urlacher messages from his mom at training camp. Got to meet her through a message board then she emailed me and I would give Lach the message. With all the practicing those guys did it was hard for them to make contact. Mike Brown he is so kewl. Olin Kreutz he is so funny he is such a practical joker. They are all such kewl people. I wish everyone could get to know them the way we did. They are just like everybody else they just play football and make alot of money. But they are all really nice people. Never met any of them that were not. I am hoping they can go all the way this year. Still unbeaten kinda like 1985 all over again.

Shannon - I thought that you can only start betting the day before the race? I plan on making all my bets once I am there. You never know what late changes may occur.

Susan0- What a fabulous link!! Link monster.. You go girl.

I had never seen Man In Havana.. Thank you for sharing that awesome link. Now is that something to get excited about or what. Barbaro's baby brother!!

I have to say, although I cant see him from the front.. even from the side, his face profile looks very similar to another handsome boy we know. Ok maybe I am a little partial to B. :)

Mary L. - No I never did. I have only seen the Bears when they have been down here to play the Dolphins. That used to only be in the pre-season. When I was a teenager I had posters on my walls of Jimbo, Walter Peyton and The Superbowl Shuffle. My mom was worried about me.

Jo - You are very brave and tough if you can drink bourbon. That stuff burns me all the way down my throat. If anyone ever offers me a buttered rum I will have to say undoubtedly, NO!!!!!!!!!
