Barbaro Updates: 119

updates are now here.

Update 950: No Barbaro update yet, as usual for this time of the morning.

I just spoke with Ramon Dominguez, who is at the airport waiting to fly out to Kentucky. He currently has three rides in the Breeders' Cup races. He rides Better Talk Now, Rob Roy (Sir Michael Stoute) and Friendly Island (Todd Pletcher). He will get acquainted with Rob Roy tomorrow morning at Churchill when he will see him and gallop him for the first time. He won't be riding Friendly Island before saturday (the Sprint race), and he won't gallop Better Talk Now either, Lisa always does that. I will catch up with Ramon again tomorrow hopefully, after he has ridden Rob Roy and ask him how he likes each of his chances. Ramon will be leaving Kentucky to ride at Aqueduct on friday before returning to Kentucky for the big races on saturday.

I did ask Ramon who he thought would win the Classic (Ramon does not have a ride). He believes Bernardini is the real deal, and he seems to be improving with each race. Ramon does have a soft spot for Invasor, who he rode to win the Pimlico Special. Of course Invasor has been very consistent all year (and is Tim Woolley's pick). Lava Man has also been super consistent, but as Ramon noted, Lava Man's good form is all in California, and there are question marks about him when he travels.

Update 949: Again the Barbaro update will likely be late this morning.

So this is why Mike Jensen was at Fair Hill a couple of mornings ago: The Quest. Looking to the future of the current crop of two year olds in the area. The article concludes:

"Dreams are free," said Peter Brette, Matz's assistant trainer, as he watched Chelokee graze after a morning gallop, "and this time of year, it's quite nice to have a nice crop of 2-year-olds."

The article mentions Barbaro's younger half-brother. His older half-brother is now retired: Holy Ground, half brother to Barbaro, retired.

Don't forget, 3 pm east coast time, there will be a feature on Barbaro on "Inside the Lines" on ESPN.

Update 948: Peter did call, did visit Barbaro and Barbaro remains well. Peter took him out for a pick of grass, groomed him and changed his bandages. Another upbeat report.

Update 947: It looks like no update tonight for Barbaro, likely due to Halloween (Peter is probably tricking and treating).

A nice AP story: Matz Back at Scene of Barbaro's Triumph that includes the following excerpts:

One moment, Matz's voice breaks and tears well in his blue eyes as he talks about Barbaro, whose career ended with a devastating misstep in the Preakness. The Derby winner was supposed to be taking on Bernardini in the $5 million Classic on Saturday, with Horse of the Year honors at stake.

The next, Matz is composed and focused on saddling 4-year-old filly Round Pond in the $2 million Distaff.

"It's nice to be back having such fond memories from before," Matz said Tuesday, ducking inside the barn to escape rain drops. "I just hope we have the same results."

and

Barbaro will reunite his human handlers -- Matz, the Jacksons, Richardson and jockey Edgar Prado -- on Wednesday night when they're honored at the National Turf Writers Association awards dinner.

The Jacksons plan to attend, then return home and watch the Breeders' Cup on television.

"Coming back, it'll bring nothing but warm, good happy feelings," Gretchen Jackson said. "Once you've won an important race at a track, you feel like that track is always a part of your life."

Update 946: Lisa Davison just called to update us on Better Talk Now and Film Maker. Yesterday they walked and then shipped to Churchill from Keeneland. Today they galloped on the dirt track at Churchill, a light gallop. Tomorrow they will train on the turf. They both appear to have come out of their breeze on sunday in good order. I asked Lisa how it was at Churchill, she said there were plenty of photographers!

The Daily Racing Form has the following article on Graham and Film Maker: Last chance for Film Maker to reach the top. The following is an excerpt:

"I think Graham Motion is one of the fine young trainers, but he's one of the finest young men that I know," said Adam. "He's a great family man, a great father - he has all the traits I look for, and besides that, he's a heckuva horseman."

Update 945: Many of you have inquired how Sabina Pierce is doing after her accident. Well here it is (comment timestamp: 7:05pm):

I just wanted to Thank YOu and all of the Fans of Barbaro for all their support while I convalese from my injuries from my riding accident during a x country event 2 weeks ago. All of the flowers, cards and gift baskets cheered me up immensely. I was laid up in the hospital with a burst fracture of my t12 vertabrae with 50% compression into my spinal cord. I had some great care at U of Penn's hospital during my stay from the nurses, to the helicopter, to the trauma team and also a vey good surgeon. The surgeon fused 3 vertabrae with bone from my hip just like dr. Richardson did for Big B. I now have a fusion of bones, with rods and screws for support and a chiseled hip just like the big boy.. I feel closer to him now more than ever..and I just like big B, had a very serious injury, the drs told me it was a miracle that I was not paralyzed. That they had never seen anyone with that injury walk away. I find myself not just very lucky, but very blessed. Barbaro is my inspiration to get better now too! Thank you all for your support and love!
Sabina

Bernardini had his final work at Belmont in preparation for his biggest race / challenge: Bernardini Has Final Work, Ready for Classic. The following are excerpts:

"I'll never get on another like him again," Harris said. "He's the complete package. He does everything you want him to. He was tough today. He gave me a hard time. I had to break my reins. I looked around to see if there was something coming, I didn't know what was going on. He's just full of himself. He's just that sharp right now.

"Once he got to the half-mile pole, he just settled in and it was easy sailing from then on," the exercise rider said. "He galloped out really strong. The farther he goes the stronger he gets. He has never been doing better than he is now. He's ready."

and

Two Tex Sutton planes will depart JFK Airport in New York Wednesday morning with Breeders' Cup horses. The first, to leave in the morning, will carry the horses trained by Albertrani, Jerkens, Shug McGaughey, Kiaran McLaughlin, and Rich Schosberg.

The second, slated to depart in early afternoon, will transport the Todd Pletcher-trained horses.

Update 944: I just spoke to Mrs. Jackson. She visited Barbaro (of course) today and all remains well. She will be on her way to Kentucky for an awards dinner tomorrow I think, the Barbaro team is being honored. On that note Mike Rea will also be heading out to Kentucky as a recipient of a White Horse Award nomination.

I spoke to Steve Willard. He shipped with Giacomo on a flight to Louisville today. There were about fourteen horses on the plane, including Brother Derek. Giacomo jogged yesterday, did not train today, and will likely jog / gallop a little tomorrow. As Steve said to me, Giacomo is back where he made history!

Update 943: I just completed an interview with Graham Motion, who runs both Better Talk Now and Film Maker in the Breeders' Cup on saturday. The interview follows:

Me: On the recent Keeneland Meet and the Synthetic Track:
Graham: This was my best Keeneland meet. I really like the synthetic track. It is very good for the turf horses, there was no need to scratch when a race came off the turf onto the polytrack. The polytrack just seems to level the playing field between the dirt and turf runners.

Me: I asked Graham if he thought synthetic tracks would be adopted more widely:
Graham: Yes, in the longrun. All the California tracks are mandated to adopt the track and it just seems momentum is building. Churchill may take a little longer given they are the home of the Kentucky Derby. This will change things if the Derby is run on a synthetic track, but a Breeders' Cup will inevitably return to California I guess.

Me: Better Talk Now and Film Maker, your two runners on saturday, have been consistent and good for a long time. To what do you attribute this?
Graham: A big part of the answer is they are both very sturdy horses. Fair Hill is also a huge part of it. They are away from the hustle and bustle of a regular racetrack. As they have gotten older, they have gotten better, and now we can pick our spots (i.e. Film Maker has run only three times this year with this upcoming race the season goal).

Me: And their chances on saturday?
Graham: I feel good about them both. Perhaps Film Maker has been a little more consistent over the year, but Better Talk Now has his best distance, a mile and a half, for the first time this year. For him he needs a race with pace up front, this was certainly not the case in the Arlington Million. Both these horses have done a tremendous amount for my career, and I am extremely fond of both of them. I have been pointing both for these two races since the beginning of the year, but you cannot expect this to happen.

Me: And who will win the Classic?
Graham: Bernardini has done nothing wrong. He has been very impressive. The only thing that would concern me is he has not been pressured. How would he respond if he was pressured? I think the english horse David Junior may be a live long shot. He has had this race as a target all summer, and he has a bit of an american dirt pedigree.

Update 942: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (monday night). I just spoke to Peter who had heard from Michael. Peter will try to get to see Barbaro later today.

way to go ACN

Happy Halloween, Alex, Barbaro, & all FOB!!!

I live so far out in the boonies, that it's usually a quiet night here.
Thank goodness!!!!

Great ACN! Thank, Alex!

So glad you did the interview with Susan Shapiro of WGAL 8, Lancaster PA. She's won numerous awards for her journalism, including her work on the horrible issue of puppy mills here in Pennsylvania, so I am very optomistic about the piece. Please keep us informed if you get additional info on the story.

Thanks so very much!

####
FsOB:
A little backstory: As ShelleyA posted yesterday, we are the foot soldiers. We are calling senators as the public face of public dismay and disbelief that (misquoting Mrs. Jackson here) someone would eat Barbaro.
Also, we as Fans of Barbaro, are an addition to a well-designed and orchestrated campaign that has been going on for some nine years, but has been given new impetus by the mainstream appreciation of Barbaro.
Now, this is the key point from here on out: We need to be on the tally at day's end. The best way to get on the tally, is by keeping your message short, sweet and generic. That way, they'll be less likely to know that you've called before. Remember, details are no longer necessary, since they were fully covered in the "Dear Colleague" letter circulated by Sen. Landrieu.

Finally, as Shelley A suggested, if a little time could be devoted to finding people (friends? relatives? co-workers?) who haven't yet called/e-mailed,and persuading them to do so, that would be great.

Cheers,
Friar Tuck

Greetings all:

Just finished calling the Big 7, the committee members, the IL senators and the TX and PA senators.
Senator Specter's aide told me that he is now a co-sponsor and supporter of this bill.

i've just finished emailing the 7 senators and my activist sister in law is asking her friends to come out for the cause as well. We need to keep on them all day every day. I do what i can with work but it doesn't take long at all. There is an urgency now and we need everyone to step up to the plate.

I really like this new Close up portrait of Barbaro. It feels like you can get right up close to him and touch his soft nose, yet he has that look of greatness in his eye. The look we have all seen...."hey...I'm great, I'm Barbaro, and the rest of you can eat my dirt and have a nice view of my tail"

AAAHH the memories will never ever leave us....

Quite a sobering post from Daryl. Folks, we all have worked so very hard these past few weeks, for some months & yes years for many. We can't let all who have worked so hard and especially the horses down at this late hour. If everyone could just push a little bit harder, concentrating on the Big 7 and Commerce and especially Senator Frist. Frist is the key to getting this bill onto the Senate Floor for vote. Please, please...everyday..please.
Thanks for listening.

Lord God, wrap S1915 in Divine Love and Divine Order. Open the heart of every member of the Senate to clearly hear the voice of the horse, and feel the Magnificent Spirit of the horse. Compel each member to immediately move S1915 to the floor in a right and perfect way, and then vote with their hearts and their conscience for the highest good of all.

So happy to read on this Halloween all is still going well for Barbaro..During the grueling summer of anxious moments for Barbaro, I thought that I would see each holiday as a milestone for Barbaro's progress. Regarding different ways to get the word out about S1915 and HS. I was able to post to craigslist for houston under 3 different categories - general, politics and pets (all those animal lovers). You have to change the posts up a bit, because they don't like duplicates. I was able to use America's Dirty Little Secret twice though, and Help Save Texas Horses once. Anyway, just wanted you all to know it is relatively easy, and as I understand it, widely read.

We have to keep the pressure on this week. It will be increasingly urgent over the next two weeks to let the senators know that we are still here, every day. Thanks!

Dear FOB's:
I just want to repost what I did earlier as it seems to be off the page now. I read a quote from Senator Ensign's spokesman, Jack Finn, in the Tennessean: (S.1915) It could pass legislation but it's doubtful." I called Ensign's office and talked to Mike (the anti-Katie)! What a wonderful young man! Here's what he told me! It's a competition, and it's in no one's favor. When the senate reconvenes they will have many issues facing them. He said we are SWIMMING UPSTREAM! Here's what he said we must do: 1. Call your own two senators and tell them to push. I called my two senators, Coleman & Dayton of Minnesota, and brought forth Senator Landrieu's letter to Frist. I asked my senators to support her. 2. Call the committee members. This means we really have to step up these contacts. 3. Get on Frist! I look at this as a wakeup call. We have competition! We have only a few short weeks to get our work done! The senate will be in session for a short time! Everyone has to step up! Call, fax, e-mail and post new ideas! We all have had to swim upstream at times in our lives. Now let's do it again and save our horses. Do it in the spirit of Barbaro!

HEY GUYS,
As you already know, the Senate returns to DC on November 9th and reconvenes on the floor of the Senate on Monday, November 13th. The following week they will again recess for the Thanksgiving holiday break. After that there is no guarantee that they will return before the end of the year.
The whole point of contacting the Senators during this current recess is so they can take immediate action upon their return. Just think, all the years and years of fighting for this are coming to a head. Should we fail, consider this, we must start at the bottom of the mountain once again as NO pending legislation is allowed to carry over into next year. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD IT'S A POSSIBLITY THAT THIS ISSUE MAY NOT EVEN COME UP AGAIN. THIS COULD BE OUR LAST CHANCE!!!
I know that some of you have some very creative ideas to draw attention to this cause, but, please, listen to this.WE ARE OUT TIME, GUYS The powers that be do not want us spending any of our precious time on anything other than calling the Senators and getting this bill out of committee and onto a vote. They have asked us to join in their efforts, but it is important that we follow their instructions. They have made it easy for us by pointing us in the right direction. THAT OF CALLING, FAXING AND EMAILING the Senators. IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COMPLETE THIS SPECIFIC MISSION. OUR REPUTATIONS WILL BE FORGED IN THIS EFFORT.
WE MUST MAKE THOSE PHONE CALLS, FAXES and EMAILS to ,SPECIFICALLY, THE BIG SEVEN SENATORS AND THE COMMITTEE MEMEBERS.
I PERSONALLY CHALLENGE EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU TO MAKE THESE CALLS, FAXES AND EMAILS!
THIS IS OUR TIME...FANS OF BARBARO...WE CAN DO THIS .....CARPE DIEM....

Dearest Barbaro, it is so good to hear ACN for you. Happy Halloween! I wonder if you will get cany corn today?? Don't pass it up, you will like it!!! Mend your toe and grow that hoof today. Don't pull any pranks or tricks and treats will be yours aplenty. Butterfly kisses, big guy!!!

It seems our most important work for S1915 is ahead of us. I know we are tired and feel that more than phone call and emails and faxes are in order. But if we stay the course, that is , keep doing what we are doing for the next few weeks, we are making a difference in the tallies. We are making our voices heard. We are America speaking up for what we believe.

No fancy talks. Keep it short and simple, they will tally your call, fax or email. We are the foot soldiers. We are so close. Don't give up now.

Soap Opera time means time to phone the seven senators' offices and also the commerce committee. Keep the ball rolling!!!!!!!!

I was thinking, wondering the other day how Barbaro would be able to graze when the weather gets icy and so cold the grass isn't growing. I wondered how slippery earth might be a problem? And then I saw in an article yesterday that they are considering moving Barbaro to a warmer place for the winter. Does anyone know more about this?

It seems Barbaro would be not close to the ones he knows best, Michael and Dr Dean and all the vets and the Jacksons, wouldn't he be lonely, miss them? But if he has to stay inside, that seems a problem too?

Can there be something like a green house I wonder? I know his mental health is so important too--but to be away from what has become his home, his friends...that seems it would be sad for him too???

This is just a small version of my original flier. Hope it's visible here. I'm posting this to give those who haven't yet seen it, an idea of what it looks like. This image is an active link to the larger printable image. Please use it with my blessings, distribute the flier wherever you think it'll do the most good! This fight is not even close to over yet! Don't consider it a victory till we see these butcher shops closed! We must keep calling, faxing, and e-mailing the Senators, and do it often! C'mon folks horses' lives are at stake here!! We owe it to them, and to ourselves to do all we can! Let's give them a chance to go on living. After all the years of service, companionship, and love they've given us.

It's hard but we just have to keep at it. The fat lady has not even come close so let's just remain persistent with the Senators, everyday, everybody. Keep it simple....like to Frist..."please bring S1915 to the floor for immediate vote". And the others...."please use your influence and ask Frist....blah, blah, blah.
You know what I mean. It's the tally that's important now not the content.

Thanks for the sobering reminder of how much the Senate has to do in the short time they are in session after the recess. This is our number one issue, but they do have other priorities, too...and unfortunately, an animal welfare issue is exactly the kind of thing that will be put onto the back burner. Our ONLY hope is if our efforts to contact the senators do not flag.

And we must find more people to help us call, fax, and email. If there is anything you can do to get the word out that you have not already done, please do so now. Maybe your local library will let you put a stack of flyers on the desk...be creative in coming up with new ideas to reach more people. Please just make sure that whatever flyer you use contains the instruction to call at least Senator Frist and their own senators...make it easy by providing the phone numbers...Let's get those tallies up, up, up!

As many of you know this is a tiring fight, but don't give up. Let's think about those that have been fighting this issue for nine (9) years! They have not given up and because of them, the Bill has made it this far.

To those who have been fighting this fight before we became involved, THANK YOU! EVERYONE, when you get tired, think about their courage and strength.

SOMETHING NICE:

Talked to Senator Landrieu's office and thanked her for everything she was doing to push S.1915, and the lady (extremely nice) turned it around and said to THANK EVERYONE FOR ALL THE SUPPORT THAT WE WERE GIVING HER! Her thank us?

If she ran for President, I would vote for her. We need more people like her.

REPOST: The backstory is important. Absolutely no need to get demoralized. Absolutely huge need to maintain the pressure to get the tallies up, so that there's a public face to the political pressure that is already being applied.
-----------------------------------------------
Tuesday skritches and carrots to undefeated champion big boss horse of forever and fearless leader, Barbaro Jackson.

####

Landrieu.

Finally, as ShelleyA suggested, if a little time could be devoted to finding people (friends? relatives? co-workers?) who haven't yet called/e-mailed,and persuading them to do so, that would be great.

Cheers,
Friar Tuck

Visual-- This Halloween, after dark...a winged Pegasus emerges from New Bolton....going trick or treating with a goat and a cow who are dressed as attendant elf-like creatures. In high spirits they go out into the night. With his hoof the goat knocks on the door of a near-by home, someone comes to the door and thinks it's just kids dressed up in very convincing costumes. The three imposters tell them they want candy hoping it's a household that won't push healthy food on them, like carrots. The willing treaters come up with bags of candy for them including imported chocolates, truffles and home made butterscotch pralines. Pegasus and his elves laugh all the way back to New Bolton.

We were talking the other day about dreams, or signs. This morning, I had a client file open on my desk, and went to get more coffee. When I got back to my desk, streaks of color, like a beautiful rainbow, were streaming across the client's file. Well, I have a crystal clock on my desk, and decided it was just the sun through the crystal (even though I haven't seen that before in the three years I have been here, and it didn't move). Anyway, just now, as I am getting ready to leave, I happened to look up at something that caught my eye - and on my ceiling there is a circle of white with three smaller circles in the middle, and a rainbow of color around the outside of the larger circle. Now I know this sounds crazy as hell, but I'm hoping I can lean on my credibility with this board, because I really saw both of these things, and felt the need to post about it. I also have a very real sense these "rainbows" have to do with Bobby, and/or all the horses we are saving, and will save. I have to leave now, but I will look up what a rainbow means when I get back. Please don't make fun of me while I am gone!

HI Alex,
I just wanted to Thank YOu and all of the Fans of Barbaro for all their support while I convalese from my injuries from my riding accident during a x country event 2 weeks ago.

Hello All
I just talked to Rachel. She is doing ok. Doctor gave her some medication, to try for a couple days. If she doesn’t feel better, in a couple days they will run more tests. I told her no work. She wants to pickup stuff to work on. But I am not giving it to her. She is to rest. If we don’t answer your emails right away, please be patient we will get to them. I want to thank you all for your prayers, good thoughts, & messages for Rach. We will keep you up to date
Now, the Boss Horse, got lots of Halloween goodies. He knows he is loved, I’m sure. The staff at NBC was just bubbly happy today. All dressed in costumes. It was neat. When I walked in with cupcakes the stampede started. This was before Dr Sweeney announced them. We had 12 dozen cupcakes half was gone by the time I carried B’s baskets in. Everyone just kept saying tell fan of Barbaro “Thank You”. It’s a great day in Kennett Square.
Sunday, fundraiser, we have two Barbaro hats signed by The Jackson’s & on the way to KY to get Michael to sign. Email us just like the print. Let’s start at 25.00.
That’s all, for now. God Bless.

I am thinking they made up some lie to tell the neighbor and maybe he thought he was being helpful but poor Dilly knew something was not right. This totally goes against the pro slaughters arguments that no horses are stolen, that all are unwanted and I think as from the aticle posted yesterday the killers are scrambling to kill as many and make as much money as possible now that their dirty little secret is out. I will email the pittsburgh NBC affiliate and see if they can show the slaughter piece Alex was interviewed for ( and scenes of the horrible New Holland auction) I pray they find Dilly safe.

## Just finished calling and faxing all commerce committe members and the Big 7. Talked at length with an aide in Senator Boxers' office who said they just had a meeting and she asked for the names of the senators who are not co-sponsors yet. He said she is very aware of the short time they have when they return and she is making this a priority. He also said she is very aware about the horses from CA still being sent to slaughter - huge waste of taxpayers money spent to pass Prop. 6 and no enforcement. More reason for a federal ban, I reminded him.

I remind Frist's office every time I call, on the last day of the senate session in October, they met on a Saturday and passed such important, urgent legislation as animal terrorism and INTERNET GAMBLING. They can make time for this bill, doing it is another issue. We have to keep going and not let up now. Reading the horrible statistics is more motivation.

I have been thinking for some time if they were going to mention bringing Barbaro here for the winter. I know there is no place here even close to New Bolton, I don't think there is anywhere. But the vet who did surgery to save my rescued thoroughbred is here and he is a good friend of DR. Richardson. In fact Dr. Richardson was at his clinic watching the Preakness. It helps his mental state so much to go outside and graze. I wish Dr. Richardson could come along for the winter!

What was it?

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at October 31, 2006 8:25 PM

Dear FOB's:
Earlier I posted a comment by Senator Ensign's spokesman stating he thought "it could be passed but it's doubtful." I asked Mike, Ensign's wonderful aide, about that and he said there is so much competition (from other bills) that we ARE SWIMMING UPSTREAM! He said call your own senators and have them push. Remind your senators of Senator Landrieu's letter to Frist. Great leverage! He said to call committee members. And call Frist. I asked aides if calls made during evenings & weekends, that go to VM,are tallied. Here's a list that said yes: Ensign, Frist, Stevens, Reed, Reid! So if you have a cell phone & free night & weekend minutes, call, call, call! Leave a short, concise message. Also, Senator Clinton has not voiced her position. 202-224-4451 and her VM calls are tallied. Senator Norm Coleman (Mn) has not voiced his position. 202-224-5641 and his VM calls are tallied. We have 3 issues: short time before the senators reconvene, short sessions & competition! But we are making inroads. With one aide I introduced myself as a member of Fans Of Barbaro. She chuckled, nicely. I asked her why the chuckle. She said there must be a million of you! Great! They hear our voice. NOW LET'S SCREAM LOUDER!

PLEASE LOOK AT THIS FLYER!!!!!!!!!!!

Ballydoyle high flyers lift off
Tuesday October 31st 2006

O'Brien'sBreedersteam outto avengeRock loss

THE five-strong Ballydoyle team for the latest renewal of the Breeders Cup departs from Shannon this afternoon on a direct flight to Kentucky with their champion trainer Aidan O'Brien following 24 hours later.

Louisville is their initial destination with an estimated 10-hour airborne trip completed by road to Churchill Downs, traditional home of the Kentucky Derby and widely regarded as one of the best tracks in the USA.

A triple scorer already at the unofficial Olympics of flat racing, O'Brien will be saddling three runners in the Mile in a bid to gain compensation for Rock Of Gibraltar's defeat by French raider Domedriver in Chicago four years ago. First reserve Ivan Denisovich is almost certain now to get a run in the Mile with Michael Kinane up to join Ad Valorem, in the hands of another former Ballydoyle stable jockey Jamie Spencer, and Aussie Rules.

French Guineas scorer Aussie Rules bounced back to form on his recent American debut in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland with leading US rider Garrett Gomez aboard and that partnership remains intact.

Kinane is entrusted with the plum rides on O'Brien's other, higher-profile candidates George Washington in the Classic on dirt and Scorpion in the Turf.

Most attention will centre on the switch from grass to dirt being undertaken by the Coolmore partners with four-time Group 1 victor George Washington on his final outing before going to stud.

Whether his career as a stallion takes off is anyone's guess, but the owners are well aware that the top miler in Europe's fee could be doubled and his reputation cemented worldwide if the colt can transfer his brilliance to the new surface.

O'Brien is only too well aware of the stiff task facing what he regards as one of the best horses he has put through his hands since Giant's Causeway went agonisingly close against Tiznow at Churchill Downs in the 2000 Classic.

"All the odds are against George Washington - the 10-furlong trip and the surface are new to him - so his ability is what we're going on. He will only canter on the track on Friday morning.

"A good draw would help and we hope he jumps with them at the start," added the trainer, whose horses won't be finished for the campaign for some weeks yet.

Last year's English St Leger winner Scorpion, only back in action recently, could go on to Hong Kong after the Breeders Cup while he may target the Hollywood Derby in California with Ivan Denisovich.

Ouija Board arrived as part of an 11-strong European party on Sunday evening and looks set to start a warm favourite for the Filly And Mare Turf.

Connections reported that Frankie Dettori's mount enjoyed a dream trip to Louisville and were pleased to discover favourable fast conditions on the turf course.

#### I just found out that a 2 y old Qh filly I sold to a man in Georgia for a race prospect has disappeared... He told me she was a pig and couldnt run. when I pressed him for an answer to where she was he gave me a suspicious answer. A girl scout camp. I pressed him for a name of the place she was at and he wouldnt give me an answer. I asked him is she went to a killer, and he got very defensive. I am praying for my BG. My son (5) named her because she was his baby girl. This is breaking my heart and makes me even more determined that we stop this slaughter of our horses. jen

I posted the following in the 'News and Politics' forum on MySpace and will post it to various other forums.

The slaughter of American horses for human consumption in foreign countries needs to stop. There are three remaining slaughter facilities in the US. One is located in Illinois and two are in Texas. We Americans do not eat horses nor do we use them to produce dog food or glue.

90,000 horses were killed in these plants in 2005. Many, if not most, of the horses are young and healthy and were obtained either by theft, as a result of the PMU industry, or under false pretenses. Thousands of horse lovers have spent over a decade trying to put an end to the slaughter of horses in this country and we need your help.

HR503, and anti-slaughter bill was passed by the House earlier this summer. The companion bill S.1915 is currently stalled in committee. We need to continue to contact our Senators and respectfully ask that they co-sponsor S.1915 and take action to get this bill out of committee and onto the floor for a vote. After taking yet another break, Congress is currently scheduled to reconvene on November 13th. If this bill is not voted on by the end of the session, we will once again have to start over in 2007 to put an end to the slaughter of our horses. This is simply not acceptable.

The pro-slaughter faction claims that:

1) There is a need to slaughter horses.
This is absurd. The vast majority of the horses being killed are young and healthy. In fact, the slaughter plants ARE NOT ALLOWED to accept ill or injured horses. Killer buyers DO NOT purchase infirm or emaciated animals simply because there is no money to be made from doing so as horses are bought and sold by the pound.

2) There is no way to manage the 90,000 horses that are killed each year if slaughter is stopped.
FALSE. Just a few years ago over 300,000 horses were slaughter in one year. The substantial decrease in numbers DID NOT create economic hardship nor did any humane society report an increase in claims of neglected or abused horses. Father, since California made it illegal to transport horses to slaughter facilities, horse theft dropped by over 34%.

3) This a property rights issue.
FALSE. The passage of S.1915 will NOT take away the option of having a horse humanely euthanized. In fact, owners will still have the right to shoot their horses if they so desire. Actually, the property rights of horse owners will be PROTECTED as the risk of having a horse stolen will decline.

4) If slaughtering horses is made illegal, the cattle industry will then be targeted.
FALSE. This is ONLY about horses. The cattle industry needs to be concerned about Mad Cow disease, not horses.

5) People can't afford to euthanize and dispose of their horses.
FALSE. It costs $150 - $300 to eithanize a horse. This is less than it costs to properly feed and attend to a horse for one month.

6) The cattle industry claims that horses are not a 'native' species and should not be protected.
The fact of the matter is that CATTLE are not native to the US and were imported by Europeans. Horses have been here for many decades longer than cattle. Further, the cattle industry makes this claim for one reason, MONEY. Many cattle ranches lease government land for their cattle to graze on. Wild horses share this land and are seen as a thread to the vegetation. The treat is not due to horses grazing but to the mass destruction that occurs due to the cattle grazing. Horses clip off the vegetation whereas cattle rip out the entire plant.

This country was built on HORSEPOWER. Our horses should not fall victim to the whims of those in foreign countries who eat horsemeat as a delicacy. We do not eat cats and dogs in this country, imagine the outrage if we began slaughtering them and sending the meat to Korea.

The plant in Illinois has accumulated tens of thousands of fines due to myriad citations which have yet to addressed or corrected.

I spoke to a manager at this facility and was told that the horses are killed within a few hours of arrival. It is impossible to evaluate the horses for safe consumption during this short window of time. Many medications and dewormers that are used to treat horses are clearly labeled, 'NOT FOR USE IN FOOD ANIMALS'. NONE of these substances are tested for. Therefore, human health issues are a serious concern. As evidence of this, these foreign owned plants operate in the US to avoid the strict regulations in their own countries in addition to paying little or no income taxes to the US.

Please help put an end to this immoral, inhumane treatment of OUR horses. You can help by contacting the following Senators and committee members. Be polite, but forceful in requesting that S.1915 becomes law. The horses are counting on you, please don't let them down.

I am wishing each of you a lovely evening..

And Barbaro..stay warm, and enjoy your Halloween treats.

I admire each of you so dearly..lawyers, accountants, golf professional, and it goes on. Such huge hearts..so pure...for the love of horses, for the love of all animals and people.

I do not remember how I found this website..and Mr. Alex, thank you...

I am just a clerk, with a huge heart for all animals..my heart goes out to each person that has a heartache..praying for you...

My heart especially goes out to animals suffering..horses slaughtered for no reason, animals abused.

When my husband and I worked in Wilkesville, OH..we had 27 cats we fed everyday, and before we left...everyone of those cats had homes..the dairy farmers took them.

God Bless Each Of You.
I pray God pushes the Senate and passes the anti-horse slaughter bill.

Good night...Happy Halloween.

### Am I nuts ???? The email from Daryl S. hit me like a ton of bricks this morning .....
not a shock - but I guess I was caught "off balance" for a while ......... and then I moped around for hours - remembering childhood Halloween celebrations w/my Mom and Dad - who both passed away last year .............
and all of this combined, left me, in tears - feeling, like the rug had been pulled out from under me - and I, with a thud, came crashing down ! However, I am now ready to forge ahead -
and it came to me: Bernardini - Sheikh Mohammed - Darley Stables .......... we have all read of how passionate the Sheikh is about his horses - truly in love with them ..............
perhaps, just maybe .......... he could - should be contacted - regarding providing assistance with S1915 ??????? Am I nuts ???? It's worth a shot, huh ??

Thanks for listening, guys !

Dear friends,

Barbaro, great one, Happy Halloween! Hope you got lots and lots of treats and no tricks. Or you can pull the tricks. A little nip here, a little nip there......

###
Sabina--God bless. Glad you are doing well.

Rachel--rest up, friend. Take care of yourself.

Jen--omigod--I am so sorry to hear about your filly. Damn these disgusting excuses for humans. And the scumbags who stole the mare. These senators need to be reminded that it's OUR COUNTRY. WE THE PEOPLE. BLAST IT ALL, THEY NEED TO LISTEN TO THE WILL OF THE MAJORITY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. I am so fed up with the corruption nationally and locally. They need to get off their hineys and pass some legislation to bring decency back to our country.

okay, okay, I've got to take a breath. This just makes me so mad.

A cyberhug to all FOBs.

Peace,
Kathy from Toledo and the cats

I know this has been said over and over, but we cannot allow Horrors like this to contintue.

Good Afternoon, Fans of Barbaro!

####
had a conversation with Avi's owner this morning. He was going to be euthanized no matter what. She had her mind made up when he got here earlier this spring. I got the gift of communicating with Avi's shining spirit so I got the best part of this situation. It should be in about 2 weeks.

Sabina, it is so wonderful to hear how you are doing. You are in my prayers.

Alie, thanks for letting us know about Rachel. Tell her to rest and get better. Prayers for you are on the way.

Barbaro, you saw your MOM - Mrs. Jackson - today!!!! (as always. We all know how much she loves you and we are all so grateful to her for letting us into your world. She is an amazing lady and Mom...)

Well, I just took a telemarketing phone call and ended up educating the woman about S 1915. She had no idea about the slaughter issue and wanted to know more. I did some good today. We may get a new visitor here...I know if she does come here, she will be welcomed with open arms.

Gotta go and find out about Jury Duty tomorrow.

HI, FOB!

Now that I just posted, I scrolled up and saw the heartbreaking news about the missing/stolen horses. All I ask myself is why...why...why. Why put these beautiful animals thru this and why put their owners thru such grief and sadness. Sometimes its just too much.

Then I read Martita's post. England is one of my favorite (probably THE favorite) places on earth. To have you go there in one of your beautiful daily missives helps my little heart. Thank you for your prayers (thanks to all of you) for your prayers for Avi. For energy healing/prayer/Reiki people, I'd like to coordinate a vigil over the weekend to continue to prepare Avi for his transition. Martita, we have GOT to meet. I have to see you dance.

To all those who are sick, sad, lonely or who have animal family members who are sick, my prayers are with you all.

Healing, Love, Peace,
Lyn Gilbert

Sherry, Didn't Sheikh Mohammhed send holy water from the Jordan River to Mrs. Jackson for Barbaro? I wonder if she has asked for his help with S-1915??

Sabina,

So glad to know you are recovering. I will continue to pray for you and your complete recovery. It's truly a miracle that you were not paralyzed. Yikes, I don't even like to say that word, let alone type it. May God bless you each day as you heal. My thoughts will be with you Sabina.

Mary S.,

I believe in the rainbows you saw today. They are a message from above, no doubt. Thanks for sharing with us I feel so much when I read your prayers. And thank you for adding the bill info. to Craig's list!

Alie,

Thanks for the update about our dear Rachel. I hope she will be feeling better soon. Send her our love. She, like all of you, is very special to us.

Sweet Barbaro,

I hope you are having a lovely day Sweetie. Love and hugs to you Angel.
