Thanks, Alex for the NPR segment on Precisionist and Old Friends. It was so good to hear Michael speak about the horses he cares for from the champions like Precisionist to those of lesser fame like Swans Way which I have bought a share(a donation of sorts to help with his care). Can still remember visiting the farm and even though many champions there, being drawn to Swannie and his sweet, soulful eyes. Sadden to hear about the ulcers in his eyes, must send a little donation. But I cannot tell you how fortunate he is to be in such a lovely sanctuary surrounded by loving people caring and loving him in his final days. This is how we need to give back to the horses that make it all happen in racing--without them we have nothing. Even though the thought of Ferdinand's end is so painful, it lead to something great--Old Friend's and the awareness that we need to care for God's creatures, great and small. Love and peace to you, Swannie and Old Friends.

The revision forces the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to sell "without limitation" every captured horse that is 10 or older or has proved unadoptable. The new rule applies to 8,400 horses in captivity, and many more in the future. "This consigns thousands of horses to death," says Howard Crystal, a lawyer for the Humane Society. Last week Democratic Rep. Nick Rahall of West Virginia introduced a bill to restore the old protections. "When Americans picture the West, I doubt they envision wild horses' being rounded up and sent to slaughterhouses to be processed into cuisine for foreign gourmets," says Rahall."

I am new to post, but I am not new to Bobby's plight. I have watched from the beginning, first in horror, then in hope, then in overwhelming sadness when the laminitis set in. Now I check every day and my heart is lifted every day with the news of his continuing healing.

I love you Bobby - get better every day. I can't wait for the day when you stand outside in your pasture with the sun on your back and freedom to run with the fillies by your side - you will always be the CHAMPION - thank you for your beautiful run for the roses. Now its your turn to be free and live long and happy.

(CBS) The following is a weekly 60 Minutes commentary by CBS News
correspondent Andy Rooney.

Someone is always warning us not to eat something. We're warned about
fast food all the time. Farm raised salmon is a threat because it may
contain mercury. You could become a thermometer. Beef was suspect a
few years ago because of the mad cow disease.

Recently it's been spinach. Consumers should not eat bagged fresh
spinach at this time, we were warned.

For years mothers have been telling their kids to eat their spinach.
Now, all of a sudden, they're telling them not to eat their spinach.
No one is supposed to eat it because it may contain the E.coli
bacteria. Supermarkets threw out bags of it.

Imagine being a simple, hard-working farmer who made a living growing
spinach and then waking up one day to find that your fields with a
couple of acres of spinach, representing your only income, are worthless?

I read where 17,000 farmers in India committed suicide a few years ago
because their crops failed. 17,000 farmers! You can imagine a lot of
spinach farmers doing that here, now.

I never liked spinach much. I like it okay raw in salad and, of
course, they warn you that raw spinach is the worst kind.

There are only a couple of things I won't eat. I don't care much for
Brussels sprouts, liver or custard desserts. I don't like anything
that shakes - you know, gelatin or Jell-O. I hated carrots when I was
a kid. I've gotten over hating them. Now I eat them but I don't like
them much and I doubt very much if they're any better for you than a
Hershey Bar.

I like steak, lamb and pork chops but you couldn't make me eat rabbit
or horse. When I was in France during World War II, horses would often
be killed in the fields by artillery fire and the French farmers would
wait until the shooting stopped and then rush out to carve up the dead
horses for dinner.

I don't know why anyone who eats beef finds the idea of eating a horse
so repulsive but I'm one of them. Horses seem so friendly and I don't
like to be reminded of the animal I'm eating. I often pass a farm with
cows grazing in the field and I think to myself how terrible it is
that human beings grow other animals just to kill them and eat them.

Most of us think of vegetarians as nuts and I'm not a vegetarian but I
wouldn't be surprised if we came to a time in 50 or 100 years when
civilized people everywhere refused to eat animals. I could be one of
them.

Of course, I'd be pretty old by then.

Countdown to the Cup: Where Will the Cat Strike Next?

The picture for the Breeders' Cup World Championships did not take on any new vibrant colors over the weekend, only the two "wow" performances by horses who were expected to do so, one of whom likely will not be competing at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4.
To briefly summarize a stakes-filled weekend that was supposed to provide some answers to the Breeders' Cup puzzle, Wait a While and Discreet Cat turned in their usual freaky performances in the Yellow Ribbon (gr. IT) and Jerome Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II), respectively; The Tin Man again was allowed to dawdle on the lead, and then just held on to win the Clement Hirsch Turf Championship (gr. IT) by a head over the hard-knocking T. H. Approval; In the Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II), Perfect Drift, as usual, finished second, again falling victim to a mistimed move, but this time ran into traffic problems as well; Premium Tap, taken well off the pace for some reason, was then sent into harms way and narrowly escaped with his life.

Turfway Park saw a parade of Polytrack upsets, with the five Kentucky Cup races being won by 15-1, 25-1, 12-1, 17-1, and 12-1 shots; heavy favorite Point Ashley failed to corner sharply on both turns in the Oak Leaf Stakes and was outrun in the stretch after breaking from the 11-post; the always reliable Healthy Addiction won the Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup (gr. II) despite strolling home in :26 1/5 and :07 1/5; Ashkal Way's late-charging victory in the Kelso Breeders' Cup (gr. IIT) gave Sheikh Mohammed yet another major contender for the Breeders' Cup; and the steady It's No Joke won the Hawthorne Gold Cup (gr. II) over a mediocre field.

By Sunday afternoon, with the exception of Wait a While's spectacular performance in the Yellow Ribbon, it had not been a good week for heroes, freaks, monsters, or whatever name you want to give those rare horses with extraordinary ability who become embedded in public consciousness.

On Sept. 28, Invasor - who still is a national hero in Uruguay - came down with a fever and elevated white blood count that will force him to miss his much-awaited showdown with Bernardini in the Oct. 7 Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I).

Three days later, Japan's national hero, Deep Impact - like Invasor, a Triple Crown winner - had to settle for third in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fra-I) at odds of 1-2, while European superstars Hurricane Run and Shirocco both finished out of the money in the eight-horse field. The same day, Coolmore's English, Irish, and Yorkshire Oaks (all group I) winner Alexandrova finished a non-threatening third in the Prix de l'Opera (Fra-I).

But there still was one monster left to wreak havoc, even though it was only in the Jerome Handicap, a race not exactly front and center on the world stage. That monster was Godolphin's unbeaten and untested Discreet Cat, whose heroics, in what has been a brief and unusual career, have planted the seeds of greatness in many people's minds.

The Jerome, which did produce last year's TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Silver Train, normally is not a race that nurtures budding superstars. But in Discreet Cat's case, all his feats - no matter how small the stage - have been of gargantuan proportion, due to the spectacular manner in which they were achieved.

Ever since his six-length annihilation of fellow 3-year-olds and top-class South American 4-year-olds, including Invasor, in the UAE Derby (UAE-II), Discreet Cat has been a rising force bubbling just under the surface. Following yet another awe-inspiring victory in the Oct. 1 Jerome, that force is now only a grade I victory away from erupting.

But with Discreet Cat and Bernardini both owned by Sheikh Mohammed, it is not likely these two brilliant colts will square off in the foreseeable future, which is unfortunate for the sport, but certainly understandable. If you are fortunate enough to possess both the irresistible force and the immovable object, the last thing you want to do is have them collide.

In his five career victories, Discreet Cat has never even raised a sweat, winning by an average margin of 6 1/4 lengths, including an 11-length cakewalk in a solid allowance race at Saratoga off a five-month layoff and his 10 1/4-length "waltz" - as track announcer Tom Durkin described it - in the Jerome.

Although he wasn't beating major stakes horses, Valid Notebook was coming off a front-running, three-length score in a mile allowance race at Belmont, run in a snappy 1:34 3/5, and Noonmark was stakes-placed, having finished second, beaten a neck by Sharp Humor, in the Swale Stakes (gr. II) and third in the Woody Stephens Breeders' Cup (gr. II) behind Songster.

In the end, neither they, nor any of the others, could even warm up Discreet Cat, despite pulling nine to 12 pounds from the 1-20 favorite. Discreet Cat, carrying topweight of 124 pounds, broke sharply and decided he wanted to be on the lead, a tactic he hasn't used since his maiden victory last year at Saratoga. Jockey Garrett Gomez quickly realized it was best to let him have his way and just went along for the ride.

Discreet Cat went his opening quarter in :22 4/5 over a dead racetrack that was listed as good. After a sharp half in :45 4/5, Valid Notebook was already under pressure, while Gomez still hadn't moved a muscle. It was obvious that this was going to be another mere workout for Discreet Cat.

Down the stretch, Discreet Cat still had his ears straight up as he drew off effortlessly with those fluid strides of his, winning under wraps in 1:36 2/5. Although totally outclassed by the winner, Valid Notebook still finished 7 1/2 lengths ahead of third-place finisher Nar.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor left open the possibility of pointing for the Breeders' Cup, but at this point it looks as if Discreet Cat will be headed to the Hill 'n' Dale Cigar Mile (gr. I) before returning to Dubai. But, as we found out with Invasor, things change quickly in racing, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens with Bernardini.

Both these colts are similar in several ways. Not only do they possess extraordinary class and brilliance, they seem to know exactly where they want to be - and should be - during a race. And whatever they decide, the result is always the same.

I pray that the precious hoof will keep regrowing. I pray for no more infections. I pray for Barbaro to become stronger day by day and no matter how long it takes, we'll celebrate his homecoming.

It breaks my heart that they were going to be slaughtered in that horrific place and then survived a horrific trailer accident. Thank you to all who contributed to the LOST IN THE FOG wreaths & donations from me - Grandma Bea. I just came up with an idea, and all of you made it happen.

Today was a great day spent talking to Marcy from the florist and the gal GEVA Organization, filling me in on all the wonderful details that took place this past Saturday at Golden Gates Fields.

Thank you all for bringing out total dollars for the wreaths between $1100 & $1200, which did not all go to the wreaths. A check was presented to Harry Aleo & then to GEVA for just shy of $300.00. This would not have happened if it weren't for the love of horses and animals from all of you wonderful animal lovers on this site.

I have not seen the wreaths yet, but am promised photographs. And if I can find someone to help me scan them, I will post them on this site for all who did not see, to get a glimpse of what they looked like.

Marcy thanked me today for giving her this opportunity to be part of a wonderful memory in the horseracing world. It was me who could not thank her enough for the great work she did for us all.

Mr. Harry Aleo was presented with a list of all who contributed to the wreaths and donations to GEVA. Everyone's name and address, minus the amount contributed by each.

For those who were lucky enough to be there thank you so much for the touching reports. My eyeballs got another cleansing. L O L

Although this venture was exciting, it is my hope we never have an exciting venture like this again.

Just wanted to pop in and remind everyone to keep making those calls. It's wonderful that Eddie Kilroy is on the board and is doing his thing.

It's very important that we don't loose sight of OUR mission.

For those of you that have senators not on board as co-sponsors yet, keep calling and writing. The aides are in regular contact with their senators and the word will be passed along. It is especially important that they know where the people stand during election time!!

Another idea is to find out your senator's campaign schedule. There's a good chance they will be "shaking hands" somewhere near you. What a wonderful opportunity to politely say "Is there a reason you won't co-sponsor S1915?"

For those of you fortunate enough to have both senators already on board, you can contact the senators on the Committee on Comerce, Science and Transportation. There are 22 members on that committee. If my numbers are correct, there are 10 members that have no co-sponsored that you can contact. If everyone on that committee co-sponsored, it would help move it out of committee quickly.

And the third thing is to keep the pressure on Senator Frist's office to put this on the calendar.

You are all seasoned veterans of this battle....I just don't want to loose the energy that we had last week when the senate was in session. Recess means nothing....if anything, it is a gift of time to gather more support so that this bill can be passed after recess.

Also, keep after your friends and co-workers to make those calls as constituents of your state.

This is a great group of people doing wonderful work. I'm very proud to be a part of it.

I would like to tell them off totally , but we

are advised by all the knowledgeable on this site

I have been so proud of Ellizabeth Dole until this

as I watch her hide and take no stand. There must

be a lot of agriculture money in the eastern part

of the state. I know the farms there are thousands

and thousands of acres big. Not on the scale of

the midwestern U.S. but big for us. Although why

the ag people want to retain the right to feed

A friend of mine who's working with another group on the ban & rescue issues sent me this today:

"I talked to Earlene (humane society farm manager) last night and she said this is really a strange case. First, who owns the horses - the original killer buyer? The driver of the truck? Does the truck company have any liability for the accident in the first place? I also heard the driver was not necessarily on the straight and narrow either. She did say they were going to put a lien against the horses for care/med etc. and, if we had to, we'd probably all pitch in and just buy them at the killer price, which isn't much anyway.

Susan e.- That is interesting what you said about the owners of those horses. I wonder if the real owner is not wanting to come forward because of the transportation violations. The cattle truck, the fact that stallions were being hauled with other horses. Several apparently. No telling how many violations there really are. the owner may not want to be identified in case he would be recognized at any future sales. I would like to know more about the stables in OK that holds these horses over for them. That person also doesnt want to give his name. the stable is George Baker Stables in Stroud OK. I also think that someone out to check for tatoos on those Thoroughbreds and see who used to own them. Jen

I just got back from my desk after a meeting and checked the posts since I put up the link to the Missouri horses and may I just say YOU GUYS ROCK!! (I need a MUCH bigger font here!!)

I'm just blown away!

I spoke to Dawn (what a coincidence!) the clinic manager at the main clinic coordinating dispersal of all the donated goods, and told her if I posted the info on this site, you guys would heed the call. I'll be talking to her this afternoon and she will be THRILLED to hear about all of the sponsors. They are going through SO MANY supplies and this will be a huge help! I've left messages for so many of my vendor contacts since last week and haven't had calls returned, but yet YOU all stepped up to the plate in a matter of MINUTES and made those wonderful donations. Tears in my eyes now, so I better post this. . .

I hope to sponsor another horse come pay - "Mortie" is 20. How can anyone have a horse for so long and then sell it for slaughter? The cough and pnemonia seem to be illness born out of the cramped filthy conditions at auction and on the truck and the horses are so scared and stressed out their bodies get sick.

Update on our colt Salvation!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just talked to Beth DeCaprio at The Grace Foundation of Northern California. The Colt's full name is Jeremiah Salvation Grace.
He was taken to UC Davis, and you will not believe this. His leg was broken and had cut through the skin. Some how it has heal back.
mended it self. All the Vet's were amazed!! They told Beth if they has seen him the day of the break, they would have only given him a 50/50 chance of surviving, with vet care. Well this little guy didn't have any vet care, and it's healed up great! Has a little infection, treating it with antibiotics. UC Davis couldn't believe he lived, much less walking on it! He will go back in two weeks for new x-rays.
Beth is trying to take photos to get the x-rays posted, for us too see them.

God knows how much pain this little guy went through, while this leg healed. Thinking about that, Makes me want to hurt someone!!

Beth also said she tried to post on TWR last Friday and had spent two hours writing to update us. But some how lost it.
She is going to get some new pictures out to me soon.

19 horses rescued Beth said "They are all doing really well". They are beautiful horses and very, very sweet. They have such desire to be with humans. It is amazing to me the ability these horses have to forgive humans. She also said 4 of the mares rescued will be having babies in the spring

She was sad to hear about the truck load of horses. It wasn't on her news.

Good news the Vet's say Salvation is doing great!

when horses get hauled from place to place under stressful conditions (not counting flipping in a truck) it is very easy to get colds and pnuemonia. Under ideal conditions, horses should be hauled where they can put their heads down to clear their lungs and noses. That should be at least every couple of hours. Shipping fever can be a very serious condition. Many of these horses probably havent had vaccinations or decent care in awhile, so their immune systems are compromised anyway. Sale barns are just germ factories. They may have picked up a virus there and then the stress just made it worse. It will be a long haul for these guys. they are in good hands now. Jen

Mary S. This sounds aweful but the horses at these auctions are usually sold by the pound. The going rate I believe is about 45 cents a pound. If Stephanie is around I think she could provide more accurate information. She has to make some tough decisions on who to save and who to leave behind. It breaks my heart. When I was growing up we used to bring my cousin's pony in all the time....grant it it was a pony but it was funny! We were always getting in trouble for that....especially when he had an accident!

All-I was driving back to North Carolina yesterday and listening to NPR and heard the Precionist's "All Things Considered" on the radio. I just wept, it was such a moving piece.
I had my doggie with me and the look of concern on her face as she watched me cry was so bittersweet. It is certainly worth a listen.

You know, when you train and a horse gets sick, you call the track vet...I wish I could help more with your question, but it almost is like "kennel cough", unfortunately, sometimes I have to board my dogs for trips and they come home sounding awful. So I call the vet and say...excuse me, my dogs are sick...they say NO, it will pass in a few days. Jen, good explanation...!!!!!!! I still remember the days when my old boss got busted in Saratoga for using Lasix before every horse has an L after his name.
It's tough, maybe Alex could Faq another on this.

I believe they go for between $400 and$500. Depends on the condition of the horse. The problem is that the killer buyers drive up the price or else other people could buy them for less.
The meat is sold by the pound but I don't believe the horses at auction are actually sold like that.

#### I have come up with an idea that I hope I can get organized. It would be to raise money for rescue organizations. I would like to start a "Ride for Rescue". It would be for people to ride their horses, get sponsors and raise money for all these organizations that need help so bad. I think that this would be a big success and if I had a lot of help in several areas of the country we could get them going everywhere. It would require getting sponsors to support the ride. I am going to contact some people who have experience with this kind of thing and see what we can do. If there is anyone else on this site that feels that they could get this organized in their area, that would be great. Let me know if anyone if interested. Jen
