Barbaro Updates: 93

updates are now here.

Update 769: Just spoke to Peter Brette who had spoken to Michael, who visited Barbaro. Barbaro remains comfortable. Another good day. Given it is the anniversary of Barbaro's first win I asked Peter about his thoughts that day and what he knew of Barbaro going into the race. He said he figured Barbaro was a very good horse going into the race, and the result was more a relief than anything. He proved that day he was a good horse. Peter has ridden plenty of good horses to compare Barbaro with given his time in Dubai and Europe.

Update 768: Well you all now own an Appaloosa Gelding, congratulations and may he be one of many!

A couple of items on the racing front.

Miraculous Miss is back in the entries: Miraculous Miss Heads Cotillion Field. This is Philadelphia Park's biggest race this year. Miraculous Miss is stretching out for the first time (I think), but her running style should suit this race. I know she has worked the last couple of weekends, good 7/8th mile works in preparation for the longer race. The article notes that Mario Pino will take the ride, I must then assume Ramon Dominguez will be at Belmont.

I spoke to Joe Deegan, exercise rider for Perfect Drift. I mentioned to him how unlucky I thought they were last weekend in the Kentucky Cup. He agreed. It was a muddling kind of race, slowly run, and Perfect Drift had nowhere to go. He said he came out of the race well, and they are pointing for the Breeders' Cup Classic. I believe Perfect Drift is the current leading money earner, and if he starts in the Classic he will have set a record for the most consecutive starts in the race. When I spoke to Joe he was actually at Timonium Sales, less than an hour from here!

Alie, from Kennett Florist left this note in the comments, timestamp: 8:01 pm:

It's a beautiful day in Kennett Square. I just returned from NBC. Delivered Barbaro's
Treat basket. All seemed well. Dr Sweeny had someone in her office, so I didn't get to see her. Kathy at the front desk is always a joy to see & talk to. They were very busy. People were running around every where. I hold them about breakfast coming on Friday; you can't image the excitement that made. NBC is just a wonderful place for animals & people. Today we are celebrating; 1 year ago was Barbaro's first win. Wow how time goes bye. We can't wait to celebrate Barbaro being well & leaving NBC. We are so lucky to have found this wonderful world at TWR that B has opened up to us. We are truly blessed. God Bless Barbaro, the Jackson's, NBC, Michael, Alex, & all connected.
Alie

Update 767: A mixed bag of racing updates. Belmont Stakes winner Jazil will not be pointed for the Breeders' Cup. While he is currently in training, it does not appear he has yet worked and clearly won't be ready: NO BC CUP FOR JAZIL. Henny Hughes and Michael Matz's Round Pond are scheduled to run on saturday at Belmont: Henny Hughes has McLaughlin upbeat. And finally a Jackson bred horse fetched the top price on the opening day at Tattersalls: George Washington's Half-Brother Tops Tattersalls October's First Session.

A challenge has been established to raise funds for the Missouri Horses: MISSOURI HORSES NEED OUR HELP CHALLENGE. Here are instructions for the challenge.

Update 766: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). I just saw Michael Matz as I was coming onto the dirt track for my second set, to gallop Chappy a mile and a quarter. He had heard from Dr. Richardson.
update, wednesday, october 4, 7:35 am.

Update 765: Again, the Barbaro update will be after 8 AM. That is looking like the new standard time to expect an update. Many of you following Barbaro have realized today marks a special anniversary, one year since Barbaro made his debut, and of course one year since his undefeated record began. Here is our interview with Jose Caraballo, who rode Barbaro that day.

Bernardini did his final piece of work on tuesday, before the Jockey Club on saturday: Bernardini Breezes for Jockey Club Gold Cup. He went five eighths in 1:03 1/5th, which seeme to me like a simple maintenance breeze and nothing more. I am planning on going to Belmont for the races on saturday. And now for something slightly amusing.

Good morning, Barbaro! Good morning to all of your fans, too!

An entire hour of grazing? You are a shining star!

Round Pond just got a mention on Wire-to-Wire - she's running in the Beldame on Saturday.

I am enjoying reading all the Horsey Girls' stories - I just KNEW I had sisters out there somewhere!

Good Morning Alex, Bobby, and fellow "fans of Barbaro"

Looking forward to "ACN" and will check back later for that update.

I just loved the "horse in the Pub" story.

In honor of Bobby's anniversary, let's continue to fight on to have the anti-slaughterhouse legislation passed. As a group, you are creative, determined and generous with both time and money. I'm so honored to be a part, however small, in the FOB movement.

Have a wonderful day!!

Good morning sweet Barbaro. Happy Anniversary big guy! Enjoy your outdoor stays while the weather is so beautiful. Grow that hoof and heal.Butterfly kisses big guy.

####Thanks Alex for the cute Pub Horse story. There is also a nice story right next to it on the Police Horse Chubby's retirement. He's 24 and if I lived there, I'd take him in a second. He is the spitting image of my big grey that I lost in 1991. What a beauty. I see he was a crowd pleaser too, just like my guy.

#### Prayers for all who need God's blessings.

i would like to meet you in belmont but i am on the road in the mid west for performances and workshops ,including at the largest aquarium on the country.they have tow darling eels that are quite the clowns..dont know if i am up to a dip.then//.
i wish you a fine trip.//t.
i also want to send beloved barbaro such a big hug.
.his one year anniversary and the array of feelings around those that care and love him, too.
i am daily amazed by the grace and fierce focus of all his caretakers led by dr dean r.
the pressure does not get any easier but on the other hand ,it is very apparent to me that there has been such a mystery and power to the daily unfoldings.
love solves it all--
.each moment ,such an opprtunity to serve on a higher road.
.love you dear great soul. barbaro--
and to see picvtures of your chocolate musvcled being loom over the screen and those nipping teeth.

.i am focusing on their track records that shed light on how they deal wiht the anti- horse slaughter bill
. it is despicable thqt they ..this group..have such narrow and litmiited skills and those are spent in undermoning things that our forefathers wrote in our beloved contstituion.

Congrats to Mike Rea on his nomination for the White Horse Award. I hope you are able to get to the ceremony Mike.

####
To Lee from Ohio. I too contacted Oprah's show through the show idea email. This was four weeks ago. I got a canned response back from the show. I hope you have better luck because the ideas you had were the ideas I gave. She could have a riveting show and be a conduit of good for so many horses.

For Lyn Gilbert: Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Lisbon (Howard County) Md. has a book called Guidelines for Establishing a Horse Rescue Facility. They ask for a $100 donation, but it's full of practical information about starting a horse rescue. Kathleen Schwartz, the executive director, has a wealth of ideas about how to keep a rescue afloat.

They have a Web site, www.defhr.org, and if you click on starting a rescue, the link to the book comes up. I wish your friends the best of luck in their endeavor.

Thanks to the person who gave the link to Horse in the Pub story. You've heard the expression "only in California!"? Well, this sounds like a "only in England" story. Love that Peggy.

Got another laugh, too. As I was doing finds on the previous postings, yesterday and day before yesterday, (since I was unable to get on the site yesterday), I was doing a find on "pub". Amazed to see "pubic" popping up all over the place in postings, even in letters to senators, I believe; looked like the letter "l" had dropped off the keyboard. (That senator's office must have had a good laugh over that). So it just goes to prove that spellcheck doesn't catch everything, (like context). I'm especially sensitive to that since I made an error on a resume once, (that a friend who read the resume caught, fortunately) that would certainly have destroyed any chances for a job.

Hi Barbaro - waiting for this AM's update, but glad to know you are still doing well and enjoying this beautiful weather. Keep growing that hoof, handsome. Love

Anita MA, I think you are right about that.

For those of you who dont have XM Sat Radio, as I was driving in to work this morning Eddie Kilroy did a bit with a listener named "Madbomber". They said they had a killer buyer/hauler who had dropped a load at Kaufman who called in for some "coffee" (Eddie serves coffee up to his listeners all over the world every morning), and the Madbomber lined him up in his sites and took care of that truck. So that hauler wont be making any more runs anytime soon. OF COURSE IT WAS A RADIO BIT AND NOT REAL! but our Eddie is getting the word out there. Good job on XM 13 "Willie's Place" Thanks Eddie!

For all you "morning people"...

HAY, ALL! I'm part of Chief Shelley A's "group" working on S1915...our responsibilities are generally legislative...getting more co-sponsors and contacting Commerce Committee members and Senator Frist. When I told Shelley what I've been doing, she thought I should post the info here - WE CAN'T TAKE OUR CO-SPONSORS FOR GRANTED!

I am blessed to have both of my senators as co-sponsors (Connecticut) so my faxes to them have started off with a big "thank you" and then segued immediately to asking them to use their considerable influence-clout-contacts as Senior Senators to enlist more co-sponsors, and to help get this on the calendar post-haste! Sooooo...for anyone who has a sponsoring Senator (if they haven't already done this) I think a thank-you message is in order...and then move to the big push for help! I also offered to provide them with links to slaughter sites etc. while giving them the courtesy of saying that since they are co-sponsors I assume that they are already well-versed on the issue!
Next...for anyone who has a Senator up for election (whether or not they are currently sponsoring)...FIND OUT WHERE THEY STAND (at a campaign q & a or by contacting their campaign office). Senator Liebermann is involved in a very controversial reelection campaign (lost the Democratic primary, campaigning as an independent, major alliances/sponsors in the Republican Party), so I will make my way to challenger Lamont's people and tell them I need to know his position before making my choice on election day!

I'm thinking silly thoughts today , I guess
I'm more lighthearted thinking of Barbaro's
anniversary day. Been thinking of what new
to say to my Senator's aides that i call daily.

I think today I will discuss ( if given time )
why horses are not llivestock , and the
difference in cattle.

I think my main point will be the Olympics
and how horses are right there with people.
Can you imagine Princess Anne, Princess Royal

of the United Kingdom riding a cow in an
Bovinian event ?
Jumping , eventing , etc. on cows ? Imagine the
pageantry and beauty of it all.

Cowboys riding cows , moving great herds of
horses over the plains and mountains to the
railheads to be shipped nationwide, and eaten.

I don't know if the people who equate horses
with cattle as livestock , actually don't know any
better , or is it just the money ? MONEY as
always I guess. Sorry to sound so cynical
today. I'm not really ! Call those Senators! bye

Hi Alex - I loved the "amusing" side bar -
From one Peggy to another....Cheers, my girl and many more! LOL, I'd love to see her stroll up to the bar for her favorite on a hot day. We had a saddlebred that loved Coca Cola right out of the bottle and would beg over the top of his stall, if he saw someone come into the barn with one. It was his favorite treat in the summer.. I guess it was fortunate that we were too young then to have anything stronger around :o).

Cheers, yourself, Alex!

This morning I was wondering why the Cowboys don't love their horses anymore?

Posted by: Cathy Potter at October 4, 2006 2:01 PM

Alex I have a question for you or for anyone who might know. I am not sure what the winters are like where Barbaro is. Will he be able to go outside all year??? It concerns me because I think he will be upset if he does not get to go outside. But if it is icy or snowy well ya don't want him to be on that really either. Just curious as to what the winters are like there and how it might effect Barbaro's grazing.

Barbaro you are doing so well you just keep doing it big guy.

Posted by: Mary Langkamp at October 4, 2006 2:12 PM

Alex, loved the story about Peggy the cart horse and her pub privilages! I used to have a lab, Daisy, that also had pub privileges and she was always a proper lady too!

Posted by: chris byers at October 4, 2006 2:14 PM

Barbaro, on the anniversary of your first victory, we think of your unexpected journey this past year - and are even more thankful for all the talents and gifts you have demonstrated, including a remarkable adaptability. Your will to live has been a tremendous inspiration to us all in many ways. And your path has had unintended positive effects on our world as a whole. You are indeed:

Undefeated. Unsurpassed. Unforgettable.

Thanks to you and all your connections for helping to motivate the rest of us to reach deeper within ourselves and find the best we can be, do, and give. There are countless others who need our help, and I know the Fans of Barbaro are up to the challenge!

MO Horses:

I tried to leave a message on Longmeadow Ranch's anwering machine yesterday but it kept stopping ans starting so I did not know if it went through but they did and someone left me a voicemail this morning that they would be putting updates on the hsmo.org website

http://www.hsmo.org/m_eventsprograms/inthenews.php

and since I emailed too I got this reply:

Darla is holding her own. She has been moved from critical down to
guarded condition. The medications seem to be doing their job. Our
veterinarian stated that she likes to be brushed.

Thank You,

I replied to this with:

Thank you so much for the update. I am glad she is responding to the medication. I am working as a Fan of Barbaro at www.timwoolleyracing.com with many others to put an end to the horrific horse slaughter. Mrs. Jackson ( Barbaro's "mom" ) is really pushing for this and we all called and wrote our House reps for HR 503 and now we are calling and writing to get S1915 passed.. Your site has given us the faces of slaughter and Darla just spoke to me and I feel kind of like her "mom", too, and I was happy tp sponsor. Next pay I hope to send more for her. I live in PA so please give her hugs and kisse from me and please keepus all updated as we have come to regard these poor babies as our own. I would give any thing to be able to brush her. Thank you for all you are doing.
Sincerely,
Chris Byers

MY BABY LIKES TO BE BRUSHED!!!!

Chris- yes they were being hauled illegally. Just to note- I live about an hour from LOngmeadow. Yesterday i called a friend who used to run a nonkill animal shelter. IN 93 she was able to raise $100,000 for flood relief victims. Within a couple of hours yesterday, she had 3 fund raisers set up from all her old contacts. She also has a contact that is friends with the owner of the St.Louis Rams. They are going to see if they can get her involved. So this weekend, there will be a donation boot at a schooling show, and then plans are to have a charity show, that should raise a lot of money. Her friend has reindeers and they raised a $1000 one afternoon just letting people get their pictures taken with them. I am also looking into a ride for resuce trail ride. We will save theses horses from slaughter, and it will because of Fans of Barbaro! Jen

Happy anniversary, Champ. You are the greatest. Hope you get an extra carrot and maybe even a butterscotch nip (my horse loved those!)to celebrate. Keep growing that hoof, and enjoy this beautiful fall weather outside grazing. Thanks, Alex, for the interview with Jose-- another testimonial to how special our beloved patient really is. Brought tears to my eyes for the lost potential, but the fact that Bobby is happy and on the mend is what makes us happy now.

Cathy, cowboys don't love horses anymore because they are like some of our senators stuck ups, greedy and self centered. They only think about fame,no compassion whatsoever.Whatever happened to Tim McGraw? He has the guts to dressed as a cowboy just to impressed and give false message to people, not to me anymore.Compassion is always in our hearts,if you ignore it, you never had it.

Barbaro, sweetheart today is a year that you started your path to fame and inmortality. You are one of the greatest.God bless you, sweetie.praying for you every single day and lighting candles.

I live in Texas and I can tell you, there ARE still REAL cowboys who love their horses.

wearing a hat doesn't make one a cowboy, any more than wearing a tattoo makes one a Hell's Angel.

Posted by: Anna in Tx at October 4, 2006 2:52 PM

Hi Everyone....If you don't mind, I'm re-posting my message from yesterday. It hasn't changed and I didn't feel like typing all over again!!!
While Eddie is "slamming", let's keep doing our part.

It's very important that we don't loose sight of OUR mission.

For those of you that have senators not on board as co-sponsors yet, keep calling and writing. The aides are in regular contact with their senators and the word will be passed along. It is especially important that they know where the people stand during election time!!

Another idea is to find out your senator's campaign schedule. There's a good chance they will be "shaking hands" somewhere near you. What a wonderful opportunity to politely say "Is there a reason you won't co-sponsor S1915?"

For those of you fortunate enough to have both senators already on board, you can contact the senators on the Committee on Comerce, Science and Transportation. There are 22 members on that committee. If my numbers are correct, there are 10 members that have no co-sponsored that you can contact. If everyone on that committee co-sponsored, it would help move it out of committee quickly.

And the third thing is to keep the pressure on Senator Frist's office to put this on the calendar.

You are all seasoned veterans of this battle....I just don't want to loose the energy that we had last week when the senate was in session. Recess means nothing....if anything, it is a gift of time to gather more support so that this bill can be passed after recess.

Also, keep after your friends and co-workers to make those calls as constituents of your state.

This is a great group of people doing wonderful work. I'm very proud to be a part of it.

Thanks Jen , for getting in touch with your contacts and it is so great they will be fund raising for our babies! every penny counts.

I am glad hsmo will be putting medical liens on them so the killers can't get their hands on them - I know there are legal hoops to go through. Plus the public will howl with outrage if they try.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri at October 4, 2006 3:08 PM

Joan- one thing you could do is go to barns in your area. Let them know what is going on. Ask them to put up something to ask for donations. Look for scheduled shows, contact the show manager and ask if they can also put something out for these horses. Hunter jumper shows are going to have the people with the most money. These people are loaded. Go to feed stores, tack stores, anything that has to do with horses. You will be surprised what you will accomplish. NOt only for these horses but for all the rescue groups out there trying to do the right thing. If this slaughter bill does get passed, it is going to be important that these places have plenty of support. they will be taking on the unwanted horses. Our job will not be done with the passage of this bill Jen

Just a thought, since I'm a "horsey girl" and frequently fantasize, if as individuals we can't have a rescue facility, how about as a group effort. This would be an enormous task but there is so much talent, compassion and let's face it, contacts. Just imagine it, rescued horsed in the name of My Prince....Barbaro.

I've contacted Stephanie at Miracle Horse Rescue and am going to volunteer. Probably only once a month or so cause it's pretty far but my first visit will be next month on my birthday. Can't think of a better way to spend it.

The owner of Old Friends in KY has a gorgeous miniature horse that goes to the local pub with him. They sit on the porch together and have a Guinness. Not sure if he was pulling my leg about the horse actually drinking a beer.

Now they each have a sponsor from our site!!! Hooooorrrraaaayyyy!!!!!

Barbaro, I am so happy that you are alive and well on your first anniversary for racing. You are racing now-racing for your life. And I know you will win big! You will always be a Triple Crown winner to me!! You are a champion in the truest sense of the word. I am so proud of you for hanging tough. I love you!!!

Hi all. I posted this yesterday but it may have gotten lost in the shuffle. On the Best Friends Network website, Pepper has started a community called Fans of Barbaro. For those who are familiar with Best Friends, it would be worth joining and supporting as its an additional way to build support for our animal causes like S1915. DJo-Ann

I hadn't about maybe the horse could have problems. Wasn't really sure if this was a "breed" or "freak of nature" (sorry about that term). Yes, it could lead to problems--people taking them home thinking they are like dogs when they are really like -- horses. I can see that it could be a problem.

Thanks for Jazil update. Just another reason why I love Sheik Hamden re: Jazil "I was in Lexington last month with Sheik Hamdan, and he told me 'don't get in a hurry. Don't push him. Let him tell you when he's ready,' "

HELLO To All "Fans of Barbaro" ... and what a group we are ... Proud, Strong, Determined Winners!! Just like our "Big Boy" has been leading the way ....

"Peggy at the Pub" ... FABULOUS Horse Story ... LOL ... and if ever she or he walked into a pub where I happened to be, I would just have him/her saddle up to a barstool and I would buy pints all night long ... for BOTH of us! Love it! Thanks for posting it, Alex ... I've also shared it with a whole bunch of other folks, too.

Eddie Kilroy ... Keep Rockin'!!!

For the Missouri Horse Rescue Challenge ... I had donated last night before I read about this, but I did email Judy this morning with copies of my receipts/confirmations for "Clueless Too" and "Frankie!" Hope my small contribution helps in the bigger picture.

Nancy in CT ... your post about strategies for the Senators is an excellent one and bears a lot of merit ...it's a numbers game, and the more Co sponsors we get, the higher the number goes toward success. So, however and whatever we need to do is within our power and within our grasp ... we just gotta believe in the miracles continuing on for Bobby and all the horses.

And Good Morning, Annointed One! So glad you had ACN last night and you will have many many more to come ... Your "Grazing Allowance" has been increased too ... good signs everywhere! Just keep on truckin', Baby!! Keep on truckin'!!

########### FOR SUSAN IN SARATOGA ...

Susan, you posted this last night and I wanted to respond but was too tired at the time:

Linnie, oh dear I would be hard pressed too... Big Red stole my heart years ago, and I am unable to read the story of.... uh, you know... without.. uh... bawling like a baby, every time. We will never know about him and Bobby on the dirt together, which is the mystery.

Secretariat. A photo of him hangs in my dining room. Oh yeah, his heart. Then too his stride. They had no way of knowing about a horse's stride until he came along, then the cameras could show his was perfect. Perfect. A running machine. A miracle in motion. Like Barbaro, only different. I just feel lucky to have been around when both of them could run. -- Peace, Susan in Saratoga

Posted by: Susan in Saratoga at October 4, 2006 1:05 AM
#################################################

I just wanted to say that I couldn't agree more with your thoughts, feelings and emotions concerning both Secretariat and Barbaro. In fact, it was the horrific accident and then the subsequent laminitis that Bobby suffered that drew me closer to him because of that connection to "Big Red". And because of Barbaro, it rekindled my love and awareness of Secretariat, so it's a circle with no beginning and no end for me. One begets the other in my heart and soul, and that's how it will always be, but Secretariat was first ... he opened that door back in 1973 that got me really excited about thoroughbred racing and The Triple Crown and the glory and wonder that surrounds it all.

Like you, Susan, I just feel so very fortunate and blessed to be living at a time when I was able to witness so many great TB legends run their own races in their own time for their own purpose and legacy. As we now know and understand, Barbaro's legacy will be quite different and far more expansive than Secretariat's, but that doesn't diminish the glowing aura around each of their stars. They were both meant to shine in their own kind of light ... and they do ... beautifully, magnificently and courageously.

Posted by: Debbie L.A. at October 4, 2006 5:38 PM

As far as I know at this time, Debbie, it is still in Committee, and yes, Stevens of Alaska is the Chairman of this Committee and a Co Sponsor, but it is Sen. Frist who will move this bill along onto the Senate floor for vote and passage, but he needs the clout behind him of having more Co sponsors sign onto this bill to assure a successful vote and passage. In other words, Sen. Frist will be more inclined to move something along that he knows will succeed rather than fail, and the more Co sponsors we have, the greater the chance for success and due diligence on Sen. Frist's part.

At least, that's how I interpret it, but again, politeness, courtesy and flexibility is key in dealing with these senators' offices and their aides ... we gather more flies with honey than we do with vinegar!!

Good Luck to ALL OF US ...!!

And remembering crying and laughing and doing what I usually do...(Practically breaking my ankles jumping up and down)
Remember, every dime that goes for a Secretariat item on his official Penney Chenery/Tweedy site goes for Laminitis research.

JEN ...

Thanks for the reminder of Secretariat's passing, even though it brought immediate tears down my face ... October 4, 1989 ... 19 years old with debilitating and excruciating laminitis, Big Red was sent Home ...

But I did NOT know that this very same date marked the anniversary of Bobby's first Win ... CERTAINLY no coincidence as far as I am concerned ... these two great champions are inextricably entwined and serve a great purpose for their legacy.

And for Susan W ...

The "definitive" Belmont Race OF ALL TIME is Secretariat's run ... and as Penny Tweedy said back then, if the race was longer, Big Red would have pulled away even more from the rest of the field. I cry every single time I watch that race. And now, knowing that TODAY, October 4, is a Very Special Day, I must take out my tape "The Life and Times of Secretariat" and watch it from start to finish, and I'll cry like a baby from start to finish too! But it will be a most wonderful, healing and cleansing cry ... for both Big Red and Bobby ...

I will most definitely purchase something from Penny's site knowing that all proceeds go toward laminitis research ... I have been wanting to donate to that research anyway, and now this gives me a doubly good reason to do that.

Do you have the direct link to Penny's official site so that I can do this? I think that today would be a most fitting and appropriate time to do this in memory of my first equine love ever and who stole my heart 33 years ago ...

Thanks again to Jen and Susan (both of you) for this wonderful remembrance ...

I have tried to get an answer from Bob Corker's office here in Tennessee regarding the bill. I have had NO LUCK! The last time I talked with someone in his office they told me that since he is currently NOT in office and CAN'T vote on the issue at this time he will NOT comment on it!! What a bunch of CR#P!!

He is running to take Frist's office against Ford and we know where he stands. If anyone has heard anything different from his office regarding this please let us know.

Hi, Alex--no wonder Brits are so good in math and computer science. Otherwise, they'd not be able to cope with money. It took me lots of research to find out what a guinea is--eventually an article told me that the Jackson colt was sold for $2,378,400.

I just contacted Senator Boxer's office to see whether she can encourage other senators to co-sponsor S.1915. Talked to David there.

He says that the Los Angeles office is the BEST contact/correspondence place for policy and legislative issues for Senator Boxer. Everthing else from her other offices gets sent to them.

I am wondering whether, if a lot of us call her and Sen. Feinstein, they might turn their attention to trying to move this bill.

Still most important to call NON-co-sponsors...but I figure the senators have more clout with each other than I do, so if I can enlist their help....

Also, if your senator is up for re election, it might be a good idea to call his local campaign office and let them know what you want. They will certainly be taking the issues into consideration as they hit the campaign trail.

Keep calling DC office but go after the local campaign offices also.

And don't forget to keep your eyes open for the senator's campaign schedule. He will probably be somewhere near you soon. While he's shaking hands, it's a great opportunity to politely say, "Why won't you co-sponsor S1915?" If you pose it as a question, he will have to give you an answer! At the same time, others may hear you and say what is S1915. Could be a GREAT opportunity to get the word out!!!

Bobby! We love you. ACN - Love IT, Sweet Prince.

There's no coincidence that this day, Oct 4 is an important date for Barbaro and Secretariat. It is a message from above.

I'm still faxing Senator Frist. Below is my message. Please copy, edit or do your own thing and fax it today to 615.352.9985. Include your name and addy.

My message:

Dear Senator Frist
I am contacting you not as a constituent, but as a citizen contacting the Senate Majority Leader. We?ve been informed that you have placed an anonymous hold on this Senate Bill 1915, the Horse Protection Act. Why?

The American People very much want to get S 1915 to the Senate floor for a vote now. Horses continue to die in this horrible way every day until the Senate follows the lead of the House (which as you know, passed HR 503 by an overwhelming margin). I implore you to listen to the will of the American People. I?ve also been informed that time is running out, and you hold the fate of our horses in your hands at this moment.

I know anyone who researches the horse slaughter houses will realize there is nothing humane about slaughter.

About 90,000 horses are slaughtered in America each year for European and Asian restaurants. There is nothing remotely humane about death for these horses, the vast majority of which are healthy, young animals with many years of potential ahead of them. The horses are ?stunned? with a captive bolt pistol, before having their throats slit. According to the American Horse Defense Fund, Inc. ?The American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines on humane euthanasia of horses clearly makes the point that unless horses heads and necks are restrained, the captive bolt pistol or "stun gun", which is to render a horse unconscious prior to slaughter, is not deemed humane. It is well documented that horses, being high strung and acutely aware of their environment, not only smell and react to death and blood, but see the instrument of death being aimed at them for a strike. This drives them into a panic and they frequently make desperate attempts to evade it as it swings toward their skull. When this happens, the horse is often hit in another part of the head, badly wounding, clearly terrifying it and causing repeated attempts. This is NOT humane. Horse slaughter will never be humane.

THANK YOU very much in advance for moving this legislation forward. It is the will of the American people, as you can see from the House?s vote on their legislation HR 503, overwhelmingly passed 263-146.

Sincerely,

Fans of Barbaro

IN MEMORY OF "BIG RED"
1970-1989

Weave for the mighty chestnut
A tributary crown

Of autumn flowers, the brightest then
When autumn leaves are brown

Hang up his bridle on the wall,
His saddle on the tree,

Till time shall bring some racing king
Worthy to wear as he!

JOAN

The problem is that some people actually think that slaughter IS humane. That's what they're being fed and they want to believe it!!
Otherwise, how could the AVA possibly come out againt this bill!!

And Frist has a very poor record on all animal rights issues. Luckily we just need him to get it to the floor....we don't necessarily need his vote to get it passed.

I'm almost at he end of Rufrian all teary eyed at lunch, and now my friends are talking and sending us to Big Red's sites. Emotional day. When I'm done with Ruffian, I will be reading Secretariat next. I have towels for both.
