    Barbaro Updates: 99

    updates are now here.

Update 808: The USA Today story I highlighted this morning is actually on the front page of their paper today, along with a lovely headshot. I was talking to someone about another project I am supposed to be working on (have not started) and she noted Barbaro was on CNN this morning. I love that he is in the main stream media.

OK, those of you who have a fear for their dentist will empathize with this. Imagine you have a toothache, which comes and goes. At times it gets pretty bad, but then it goes away. You know you need to go to the dentist, but you keep putting it off. Now you have made your mind up, and you are committed to your trip to the dentist. You know it may hurt, and actually may be quite painful, but you hope it will cure the toothache you have been experiencing. OK, that is how I feel about needing to move this site to a dedicated server, which is going to happen, I hope, over the next 24 - 36 hours. There may be glitches, but I am hoping that after the move, all will be well, and the problems we have had will be behind us. Therefore if the site behaves badly over the next 24 - 36 hours, you know why (or at least you will know it is a result of us trying to fix the site more permanently).

Update 807: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). I saw Michael Matz and his crew coming to the track after I had finished my second set. While they were approaching me Michael and others in his set were making light hearted remarks about some (hurdle) schooling efforts of Michael McCarthy (x Delaware jockey) that was going on outside a neighboring barn. This light hearted banter was a good signal things were well with Barbaro.

Another warm morning this morning at Fair Hill, although it seems rain may be coming in a little later. My first set was a mile gallop, after a 3/4 mile jog. The second set we went to the gate. The 2yo I was on had been to the gate before, but not at Fair Hill, and thus not with me. We cantered out of the gate, he was pretty good really.
    update 7:55 am

Update 806: A nice article in the USA Today: Against all odds, Barbaro perseveres, it also includes some new pictures. The following are a couple of excerpts:

A surgical resection was done July 12, resulting in the removal of 80% of the hoof wall from Barbaro's left hind foot. That also explains the white sign with blue lettering that greets visitors at the entrance to the facility: "Grow Hoof Grow."

The sign is the first indication, but hardly the last, of an unwavering show of support for Barbaro.

The New Bolton lobby is filled with tributes, including 12 oversized cards from Churchill Downs. Beneath the heading "Once a Derby winner, always a Derby winner" are greetings from scores of fans:

"Hi, Barbaro. I hope you get well soon. Love, Mia."

"Best wishes, Barbaro. You're a winner and you'll pull through. Much love, Jim."

    and

"He loves pushing people around. He absolutely knows he's the big boss horse," Richardson says. "He's got lots of star power -- and he knows it."

Barbaro has not required pain medication for close to six weeks. His right hind leg, with 27 screws used to repair fractured cannon, sesamoid and long pastern bones, is becoming increasingly stable. His cast was changed Monday. His left hoof is growing gradually.

If it's too soon to declare Barbaro a medical marvel, his comeback is further evidence of the fortitude that helped him to the largest Derby winning margin, 61/2 lengths, since Assault's 8-length rout in '46.

I was actually interviewed for this article, but did not make it to the final piece. The Daily Pennsylvanian (University of Pennsylvania's School paper) called up last night for a brief interview, so that piece might be coming out later this week. They were looking for others to contact them for the story: Daily Pennsylvanian Article. Now that will be fun to be in, I worked at Penn for about seven years.

The Barbaro update should be about 8 am again.

Update 805: I just spoke to Peter Brette (6:15 pm), Barbaro had a good day after the cast change yesterday. Peter had spoken to Michael who had visited. Barbaro had been out and looked comfortable.

I spoke to Steve Willard (Giacomo's exercise rider) earlier today. They were happy with his race in the Goodwood, especially the way he finished (he was third to Lava Man and Brother Derek). The extra eighth of a mile in the Breeders' Cup Classic may well suite him. They are looking to that race for now. Giacomo seems to have come out of saturday's race well.

Update 804: The rest of this morning at Fair Hill went well. I breezed Chappy on the turf, across the road on the steeplechase track. It was actually the first time I had breezed one on the turf for many years. She went well, she stretched out nicely coming up the hill from the quarter pole to the wire.

As I was going over to the turf track I passed Graham Motion's set coming back. Better Talk Now galloped over the turf course. There is still no decision as to his next start (Canada or the Breeders' Cup.) It seems Film Maker came out of her Belmont race well. She has yet to train, but will likely tomorrow. Round Pond, Michael Matz's mare, actually did train today. I think Peter took her out back, and also appears to have come out of her race well.

Barclay Tagg was at Fair Hill this morning. He said Showing Up will likely race on saturday at Belmont, in the Jamaica. Funny Cide is being pointed for a race the following saturday, a New York Bred stake: Empire Classic.

Update 803: New Bolton's update regarding the cast change yesterday Veterinarians change Barbaro's right hind leg cast:

Veterinarians at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital changed Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro's cast yesterday, Monday, October 9. "We placed Barbaro under general anesthesia to remove the old cast on his right hind limb and took new radiographs to assess the continued healing of the original injuries," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "I was pleased with the continued progression of healing and the overall condition of this leg." Barbaro had another successful pool-recovery, and was resting comfortably in his stall after the procedure. In addition to replacing the cast, doctors trimmed his feet and applied a new shoe on the right hind foot. A few hours after recovery, he was taken back outside to graze and was comfortable on both hind legs.

"There are no signs of infection and the primary incisions have healed surprisingly well," said Dr. Richardson. "Because he has had a cast on for so long, there are a few cast sores, but nothing serious."

Barbaro's left hind foot, which had laminitis, continues to gradually improve. "There is good growth along the quarters (closer to the heel) but there will need to be much more healing along the front of the hoof," said Dr. Richardson, who cautioned that "we still have many months of healing ahead of us."

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, October 17, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

    Good Morning, Fans of Barbaro!

    ####
First of all, Friar Tuck, please tell MM she is astounding me. For everybody else, if there is ANYTHING you want to manifest, this is the week to write it down then pray and meditate on it...energy peaks on the 17th/18th. Expect the unexpected.

Jake, my heart goes out to you, your mom and Daisy. It reminds me of a cat I had - Shadow (nicknamed Bullet Butt after Calvin and Hobbes). He was a beautiful silver tiger cat - had a tumor on his heart and went quickly. He was the best cat to be raised with Sam - two of them were inseparable.

    ####
gotta ask for prayers for Avi - can't go into detail, but he's trying very hard to communicate to his owner. Pray that his message comes thru. I already know and have communicated it to his owner - just need to have her open her heart just a little more to understand. I need to save this horse.

LITF, you are an angel, my Long Time Sun. If you can, please let those who miss you here feel your shining presence...let them know you're OK.

Barbaro, am very happy to hear about the cast change. You know what you need to do. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Judge, boy did you ever get busted...but I would have tried the same thing...:)

Alex, heard from Sherry in AZ...she will also be at Fair Hill on Saturday morning around 9 or so. She is gonna have a neat time here...she is so excited and I can't wait to meet her. Anybody else want to come to FH? I'd love to meet more of "the family".

Gotta get back to calling and e-mailing "the 6" and Sen. Santorum.

    Take care, everybody,

    Healing, Love, Peace,

With all the site problems yesterday, I thought it best to re-post this list. These are the senators that were mentioned in Alex's update as being the "key to our success"

    202-228-4637 fax

    Senator Stevens,co-sponsor and Committee Chairman

Senator Ensign, Sponsor of S1915 and committee member to move it out of committee
    202-224-6244 phone
    202-224-2193 fax

    Senator Landrieu, co-sponsor

    Senator McConnell
    202-224-2541 phone
    202-224-2499 fax

Also, please stay after your own senators. Those that are not on board yet to co-sponsor.

Those that are already co-sponsors to let them know how important this issue is to you as a constituent so they will help move it.

Remember, at this point, most of them know the details. They just tally up the calls at the end of the day. Keep it short, polite and courteous. It's the NUMBER of calls that will make the difference.

Thanks and good luck to us all!!!!

Great news for Barbaro! I am assuming his leg was not well enough to just have a splint. It very nice to see that both legs are doing so well.

There was a guy named "Judge" at either Aqueduct or Belmont Park when I worked at those tracks. I wonder if it's the same guy??? I often wondered if this was the guys name or if it's a nickname.

Jake....my heart goes out to you. What a wonderful life & wonderful caretakers Daisy has had. The saving grace under these kinds of circumstances is knowing that they got the best possible life.

Jeanette C...praying little Kyle will be home and in loving arms very soon. So glad she is doing better.

Cindy....Cahill is so lucky to have a Mom like you. I bet you're anxious to get him back into his loving space.

Yesterday was a tough day. Couldn't get on the board til late only to find "trouble in River City". I don't like preaching to the choir but just want to say we are a Family and are in this together. We All Love Animals, Barbaro and first and foremost for me, want to end the MURDER of our horses. I's natural to disagree but remember that when we do there is something greater going on here. We are trying to make a difference. So when we disagree let it be OK and move on because we are wasting precious energy & time that could be spent working on S1915.
Know that even though many of us don't know each other there is a lot of respect and love here. This is my family now. I will not be content in my life until we accomplish our goal.
Enough said and please take this in the spirit that it said in love.

Excellent news about our boy! Bobby, so glad all went well with the cast change. Sorry about those cast sores Honey, I hope they don't hurt. Dr. Richardson is taking such wonderful care of you; and I know you are a wonderful patient. Thank you Lord for the blessing of Barbaro's healing, for Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, and for Dr. R. and all the amazing caregivers at NBC.

Alex, thank you for all you do! You are our life line.

    Lyn,

I will be praying for Avi and Avi's owner. They are lucky to have you on their side. Whatever the need, I pray it will be met soon.

I hope everyone had a chance to vote for Mike Rea's family to get the ABC home make over. If you haven't had a chance, please visit Mike's recovery website (just type in Mike Rea in the address line) and scroll down to the bottom. Every vote counts, I hope we can convince the "powers that be" that Mike's family is the most deserving.

Joan, this was from last week:

Humane Society wants custody of animals involved in accident
    By Tim O'Neil
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    10/04/2006

The Humane Society of Missouri won't pursue its costs of caring for the horses that were injured in a truck wreck - if an insurance company will hand over ownership of the animals, a society official said Wednesday.

The Humane Society has been caring for 25 horses and a mule that survived the crash Sept. 27 on Interstate 44 near Stanton. Debbie Hill, director of rescue investigations for the society, said the cost of caring for them has risen above $50,000.

Sixteen other horses either died in the crash or had to be euthanized. They were being hauled from Stroud, Okla., to the Cavel International Inc. horse-meat processing plant in DeKalb, Ill., about an hour west of Chicago.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says Charles Carter, a broker from Loveland, Colo., owned the horses. Hill said the Humane Society is dealing with Carter's insurance company to obtain custody of the surviving animals.

Normally, she said, an insurance company would take the animals after settling with an animal broker, such as Carter. The Humane Society also would have a claim against the insurance policy for the expenses it incurred during the rescue and follow-up care.

"But our intent is to get custody of the horses," she said. "That would leave us with a big hit, but it's in the best interest of the horses."

The society has created a "Horse Hero" program to raise money for their care, complete with a Web page that can be reached via www.hsmo.org, showing photos of each horse. It also has mailed more than 65 information packets to people who have expressed interest in adopting the animals.

Under direction of the Humane Society, area veterinarians continue to care for 18 of the animals and eight others are at the Humane Society's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch near Union. Earlene Cole, the ranch director, said three of the rescued horses remain in serious condition, with survival uncertain. "

JOAN ROYA: Fear not. The Humane Society of MO put liens on the horses for the medical and rescue costs--medical alone is $50,000 and climbing. This exceeds the insured value of the horses and the HSMO is working things out with the insurers to keep the horses in lieu of executing on the liens.

BOBBY, you scamp. Good morning, Starshine! At last news (thank you, Web Daddy) and it's good news. Very good. I am relieved you're still in a cast because I worry about weight distribution on those long legs of yours. Cheer up, the cast will be gone soon, I'm sure. And you went grazing after you lolled around in the recovery pool!

If I ever have to have surgery, I'm using you as my inspiration. Keep it up, sweetie.

I don't have my notes with me, but I think I was the one who spoke with Senator Burns's aide, and she indicated he was definitely pro-slaughter. I do think it's good for these senators still to get calls, just so they can see the numbers coming in...maybe just say, please let the senator know I support S.1915. Just so the aides can hear how many calls are coming in and keep track of them. Not to engage the aides in dialogue on it. I guess I just hope that if they hear all of the support for the bill they will be reluctant to speak out too strongly against it on the floor.

Hocks is a Black Quarterhorse-type stallion with left hind sock. He suffered numerous body and facial scrapes and lacerations on his rear legs and chest. Immediately following the horrific accident, veterinarians anesthetized him to suture his legs and chest. He also received IV fluids and medications to keep him comfortable. An infection has developed in the right hind leg that has to be flushed daily. Both back legs are wrapped and have to be changed daily as well. He is also not eating well and is being checked for a broken or cracked tooth or a jaw injury. He is in critical condition.

Good advise. No sense debating with someone who is not listening. I haven't seen Vanity Fair yet but it sounds like Senator Burns is exposed for burying a rider regarding the Wild Horses. I'm going to pick up the issue today. This article could be a useful tool.

I wanted to call Burns just as an "elective" since
I've finished calling all my list today. Have called quite a few additionals today also, but really
wanted Burns if he was the big supporter !

I still would like calls to the two N.C. Senators

    Sen. Elizabeth Dole 1 202 224 6342

    Sen. Richard Burr 1 202 224 3154

I hope you don't mind me jumping in on Senator Burns but he is very very pro-slaughter. If you like to see what he has done go to www.returntofreedom.org click on the right side where is say RTF Press Releases and scroll down to you see November 2005. He attached a rider making it legal to slaughter Americas Wild Horses. He is a very bad egg.

The halters should be standard nylon horse size halters. Leadropes should be just a 6 foot leadrope with a good snap at the end. She says they are desperate for them. They have over 120 horses and very few leadropes. Someone sent halters but they had the tie at the crown. Not suitable for these horses. All of these things can be sent to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. The address is on the site at Longmeadow Rescue ranch.org. Leadropes will probably run about 5-6 dollars and halters are usually 10-15 dollars. Anyone could probably go to somewhere like Stateline tack or Dover tack online and find anything they wanted...

Just a personal suggestion for anyone who sponsored a horse. YOu could always order a halter with horses name on it. they put the name on the noseband of the nylon halters. Jen

Katie and others--You can ship supplies for the Missouri horses to: Homestead Equine Hospital, 3615 Bassett Road, Pacific, MO 63069. Dawn at the clinic will distribute to all the clinics involved as well as the Humane Society. One of the employees at the clinic also volunteers with Missouri Horse Rescue (who were at the site of the accident) so any donations for them can go there, as well. They are in need of blue tarps and duct tape and can always use ropes.

The Benefit for St. Louis Horse Heroes will be held November 18th to raise money for Humane Society of MO and MO Horse Rescue. I'll provide more details as to the location when I get them. Silent and live auction items would also be appreciated and can be sent to the address above.

Correct--However, Homestead has staff heading to Longmeadow daily and is ALSO supplying the other clinics with supplies, so for those that have not yet made the trip, they'll be covered, per Dawn at Homestead. Either location is fine for donations, I'm sure.

perPETual good news about Barbaro. Couldn't be happier unless I woke up and found S 1915 had passed.

Speaking of which: Back to womanning the phones.

Reporting on today's calls to some of the targeted Senators.

I found it both amusing and enlightening to note the music played while I was on hold. Senator Frist has a rousing version of "Loosiana Saturday Night," while Senator Ensign treated me to a classical Sousa march. Just an observation.
    Back to business.

Sen. Ensign's Aide, Scott, told me that while there was only "a chance" that the slaughter-ban bill would come out of Committee and onto the floor for a vote before the first of the year, he also said something I hadn't heard "officially" before that gives me greater hope.

He said the reason it was still in Committee, is they are debating WHICH VERSION to send out - i.e., whether to send out the HR 503 version or a slightly different version, apparently S 1915. (?)

That gives me greater hope - that they are debating WHICH ONE to send out, not WHETHER to send ANYTHING out for a vote.

Sen. Ensign's aide, Scott, Sen. Frist's aide, Steve Klein, and Sen. Stevens' aide, Nicki, all said, just keep calling. They all suggested continuing to call uncommitted Senators to cosponsor. They said they are all recording numbers of calls and paying attention to the "live" people.

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH.

Senator Stevens' aide just now transferred me to the Commerce Committee line. When I asked the Commerce Committee aide whether he knew what is happening with S. 1915/H.R. 503, he said that both bills "are a possibility" as being considered by the Senate after the recess, but they will know more after the election, as to whether either bill will be considered.

He mentioned that Sen. Stevens is a co-sponsor, and he also mentioned that "Senator Inouye, who is the Co-Chair of the committee, is also a co-sponsor", and then he mentioned several other co-sponsors on the committee. He said a number of citizens had been calling.

Maybe we should be calling Senator Inouye, too. If they are co-chairs, they probably have to consult on the agenda for the remainder of the term. It would be good if they are both getting calls, I think.

In my zeal to report my Senator-calling observations, I failed to comment earlier on the best news of the day. What really thrilled me about today's post-cast-change Barbaro report, was to hear that shortly after his pool recovery, he was out there grazing in the grass. What a good boy! Cotton or poly? I know with my dog I prefer cotton or leather.

Posted by: SusanO in MI at October 10, 2006 7:32 PM

My preference would be the bolt snap. Since many of these horses aren't really broke to lead, a nice cotton rope with an "easy to snap" hook will be much easier on their handlers. Poly burns like crazy if a horse pulls back and it runs through your hands. I speak from experience!

The clinics and Longmeadow still need lots of gauze, cohesive wrap (like Coflex or Vetrap) and 1 lb. cotton bandage rolls, since they are having to re-bandage those injured legs daily.

Send your prayers for Darlin'. She has started to founder and may be developing laminitis.

Thanks to all you generous Fans of Barbaro!

I dont really think it matters. I like the poly better, but Im sure they wont be upset if it is either. Jen

Senator Ensign's office confirms that it is up to the Commerce Committee Chair and Co-Chair to set the agenda for debate/vote within the committee. So I do think it would be good for us to be calling the Co-Chair, Senator Inouye, as well as the chair (Sen. Stevens).

    ShelleyA, any thoughts on this?

CJ - yes, between the continued excellent pool recoveries for Big B., and then grazing in the grass shortly thereafter, makes us shake our heads in wonderment at this big fella! There must be something in Barbaro's attitude. If I'm not mistaken, Dynaformers' fee just went up $50,000. This seems like proof that Big B. must be special. But I am no expert in such matters.

Cathy Potter - 'fraid so. Actually I mentioned that to one of the aides and said, that would be such a waste if that were to happen. No response of course. But that is another talking point now - WASTE OF GOV'T RESOURCES (oy, so vat else is new???) if the time and expense etc that went into getting HR 503 passed goes all in vain.

I have 5 horses and I order alot from www.jeffersequine.com. I've found they have some of the best prices and I've always been happy with the service and the product. If there is a problem they are very easy to deal with.
I don't really like a bull clip but thats ALL my trainer uses. Like stated above you like em or you don't. I kinda doubt if hsmo is going to be picky about what type of clip is on the lead rope. Don't know for sure if they mentioned a preference.

With all the site problems yesterday, I thought it best to re-post this list. These are the senators that were mentioned in Alex's update as being the "key to our success"

    SIX SENATORS TO FOCUS ON

Senator Frist, Majority Leader to get on calendar
    202-224-3135 phone
    202-228-4637 fax

    Senator Stevens,co-sponsor and Committee Chairman
to help move it out of committee
    202-224-3004 phone
    202-224-2354 fax

Senator Ensign, Sponsor of S1915 and committee member to move it out of committee
    202-224-6244 phone
    202-224-2193 fax

    Senator Landrieu, co-sponsor
    202-224-5824 phone
    202-224-9735 fax

    Senator Reed, co-sponsor
    202-224-4642 phone
    202-224-4680 fax

    Senator McConnell
    202-224-2541 phone
    202-224-2499 fax

Also, please stay after your own senators. Those that are not on board yet to co-sponsor.

Those that are already co-sponsors to let them know how important this issue is to you as a constituent so they will help move it.

Remember, at this point, most of them know the details. They just tally up the calls at the end of the day. Keep it short, polite and courteous. It's the NUMBER of calls that will make the difference.

Thanks and good luck to us all!!!!

    Cathy Potter,

Yes, we might have to start over with the house after the elections but I bet that all the work we've done so far has still pushed this along a lot further than where it was. In other words they have heard from us, that fact is not going away. Also, since the House of Reps. passed it once they will most likely pass it again.

To eliminate slaughter houses in America is a huge undertaking, like moving a mountain so it takes awhile but it will get done. It's the snow ball effect, you can't stop it now!

    Re: Calls to Senator Inouye:

Here is a quote from the Commerce Committee webpage:

"Long-time friends (in fact, they call each other brother) Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Senator Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) are the Commerce Committee Chairman and Co-Chairman, respectively."

For those who missed the previous discussion -- Senator Inouye, Co-Chair of the Commerce Committee, is a co-sponsor of S. 1915; and, he helps Senator Stevens set the agenda for committee debate. So let's call him, in addition to the Big Six (Sen. Stevens is on that list), our own senators, etc.

    Senator Inouye's numbers:
    202-224-3934 Fax: 202-224-6747

    Hi all,

Getting here late today...so happy about the new cast change going well. Swimming, grazing, sunbathing, our guy has as close to the spa life as an equine can get :) So well deserved. Bobby, you are amazing, amazing, amazing. God, put some speed into growing that hoof, OK? Bobby has places to go and lovely ladies to see!

re: Burns. I think, but am not sure, that he's one of those mixed up in the Abramoff scandal. He is as bad as they come. Even if he weren't pro-slaughter, he shouldn't be re-elected even dog catcher (yikes, on second thought, especially something animal-related like dog catcher!!!)

Wondering about Daisy, Kylie, and others (my brain is fuzzy on names)? Praying for healing and good results for all.

Did anyone see the CBS Evening News last Friday? (sorry, forgot to mention) They did a piece on rescuing animals from the conflict in Lebanon. Seems like a natural to push them on this issue.

Hocks, please hang in there. Sweet thing, you need so much love and care. Wish I could be there.

I'm off to Keeneland thursday afternoon for the weekend. I have never been to Keeneland, one of the few of the major tracks I have yet to see.

I will be proudly wearing my Barbaro hat and now my bracelet as well.

Very happy to hear the positive report on Barbaro.Guess he's swimming to regain some of his muscle.

    Hay Barbaro:

Hang in there big guy. I know you want the cast off--so do I. But you know something? That cast is giving you additional support so you don't overdue on the right hind. We don't know want that leg to have trouble. I know its frustrating but you've come so far. You keep doing like you are. This will pass in time. Soon you'll be out grazing on your own with no cast or lead.

This race requires your patience. Long and slow this time. And in the end you will still be the champ because you stayed the course.

I have a ton of things to do now. I'll try to be back later. Barbaro you can do this. And when you get that cast off for the final time--then Dr R will know how to treat those sores.

I wish you lots of happy grazing today. No nippys on the good Dr. though. I know that's no fun, but nippys hurt. How about you do nippys on grass????

    Well duties await my attention.

As Chairman of the Committee, Senator Stevens has a direct number for committee issues. Since this is for committee business (he's already a co-sponsor) the best number to use is 202-224-1251

His aide handling this issue, Dan, is VERY nice and helpful. He confirms that they do "tally" up the calls and report back the hot button issues. And that they have gotten many calls on this.

So keep those calls going......we ARE being heard!!

This was posted here October 10th and another article saying it had to do with Brabro's injury.

The introduction of Polytrack was supposed to usher in a new chapter in Keeneland history Friday. It ultimately did, but not before a family with roots tracing to the track's 1930's origins was represented by the winner of the first race ever run over the new synthetic surface.

Another article on the opening of the synthetic track at Keeneland: Barbaro's Injury Gives Synthetic Surface Urgency. It ends:

"We've always been thought of as traditionalists, sometimes for the worse," Nicholson said. "But we're glad we've honored the tradition of giving anything we can back to the horses and the sport. Horses are what we're here for, and we believe this surface is going to go a long way in keeping them safe."

This is a positive sentiment. We are here for the horse, not the business of the horse.

Don't have to be a constituent. This is his committee chaiman number and for all committee business.
Senator Stevens is already a co-sponsor and is a strong supporter of this bill. His office said that there's definitely enough bi partisan support to get it passed. But it has to get out of committee and on the floor for vote for that to happen.

We MUST get it out of committee.

Have a good night Barbaro Nation, time to hoof it on home.

Barbaro, my shining star. This is for you.

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Way up high
And the dreams that you dreamed of
    Once in a lullaby
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Blue birds fly
And the dreams that you dreamed of
    Dreams really do come true
Someday I'll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops thats where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
And the dream that you dare to,why, oh why can't I?

Well I see trees of green and
    Red roses too,
I'll watch them bloom for me and you
    And I think to myself
    What a wonderful world

Well I see skies of blue and I see clouds of white
    And the brightness of day
I like the dark and I think to myself
    What a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people passing by
    I see friends shaking hands
    Saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying, I...I love you
I hear babies cry and I watch them grow,
    They'll learn much more
    Than we'll know
    And I think to myself
    What a wonderful world

Someday I'll wish upon a star,
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney top that's where you'll find me
Oh, Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
And the dream that you dare to, why, oh why can't I?

Crazy idea popped into my head, why not pass out fliers at the races asking with the phone numbers of the Senators asking people to call and support the Bill?

Posted by: Socorro at October 10, 2006 9:39 PM

ALL, THIS WAS POSTED ON THE DISCUSSION BOARDS.

    Dear Fans of Barbaro,

Hi, I am a reporter with the Daily Pennsylvanian, the University of Pennsylvania's student newspaper. Since the New Bolton Center is connected with our university (and because Barbaro's story is so interesting), I am writing an article for the paper that focuses on the well-wishing Barbaro has received since his injury. Throughout my interviews, people have constantly stressed all of the good things the fans of Barbaro have done in the past few months. I was hoping to talk to some of you, especially to those who have been involved in things such as the surprise birthday for Doctor Richardson, the anti-slaughter bill, the adoption of horses involved in the accident, etc.
If you are interested, please email me at allsportuf@aol.com, title the email "Barbaro," and if you are willing leave me the best number at which to reach you. If you could get back to me as soon as possible that would be really helpful, as I am on a short deadline. Thank you so much for all your help, and I congratulate you on all the wonderful things you have done thus far!

    Hi Alex,

Thank you very much, as always, for the daily updates on Barbaro and general news that keeps our interest piqued in racing in general, Fair Hill horses in particular - hope Chappy gets her "license" soon...for the gate that is :o).

Is there any possible chance that Barbaro could still be considered for Horse of the Year? I realize that, like golf, these prizes are based on money earnings for the most part, but if he didn't earn a dime, Barbaro epitomizes what the thoroughbred is all about, why they are bred, why they run, why they are cherished..for the most part. It would seem a shame if he were overlooked.

    Cheers, yourself!

A little story that I'm sure you all can relate to. We accept pets here at the hotel. Dogs, cats, birds also. No fees!!! Last Friday 3 men checked in with 3 mules! They are doing hiking, etc., using the hotel as a base. The mules are in a pen, lovingly set up. I scrutinized all of it, probably because we are all on alert now to animal issues. I looked at the trailer closely. It was beautiful. Then I went up to the 3 mules. And I found myself doing a nursing assessment on them! Looked at their legs, coats, hooves, and when I was done, I gave one a hug around the neck. I must have closed my eyes, and when I looked up, the 3 men were looking at me. Look at what Barbaro has turned us into! Thank you Big B. (The mules and men will be here another week.)

Prayers and love tonight for Hocks and Darlin, and all of the horses trying to live, despite what people have done to them. God, please be with them.

I don't know if this is correct, but Senator Ensign's aide told me that the typical route is for a bill to be debated and voted on in commmittee, before Senator Frist would act. (And first Senator Stevens has to schedule S. 1915 for commettee debate.) The aide said there may be extraordinary things that Frist as Senate Majority Leader CAN do, but ordinarily he would not act until after the committee vote. This makes it sound like, right at this moment, the ball is more in Sen. Stevens' court than Sen. Stevens' aide indicated to you. (??) But Senator Ensign's aide did not sound entirely certain about the Senate Majority Leader's powers; so I'm not sure what he said to me was completely accurate.

    Margie,
Packing with mules and horses too has become quite popular amongst people wishing to go into the back country without having to carrying everything themselves, especially if the trip is long. I like to go into the wilderness but hate carrying a heavy pack. It would be so nice to have an animal friend willing to help. Bless the mules!

    JAKE:
I'm sorry if I missed any earlier posts - DAISY, YOU & YOUR MOM have been in my heart and many prayers through the night and today. Strength for the journey to all of you, and I send the three of you e-hugs. The most important thing no matter what today has brought is that Daisy knows how much you and Mom loved her. Thinking of you, Lou Ann

    CAHILL:
Honey are you home yet with Mom where things are more familiar, a hug for you, too!

    ZEKE:
I'm sure that tail of yours is really wagging up a storm, please at least try to be good so your healing isn't delayed. A hug for you, too!

Posted by: Lou Ann, Pennsylvania at October 10, 2006 10:22 PM

    Marilyn/CA

Yes, the usual path is for a bill to be discussed in committee. But if the members agree on the bill as is, then it can be released from committee and can be scheduled on the calendar by Frist as Majority Leader. If no one on the committee opposes the bill as is, there is no need for debate. There is support for this bill in the committee and that support is evenly divided between the republicans and democrates.

There are a few ways this could happen and we don't know yet how they are going to do it. Senator Stevens can't do it alone but, as chairman, can have influence.

He also told me that 28 co-sponsors in the senate is a real GOOD number. And it is reasonable to believe that, if it can get to vote, it can pass.

    It was a good explanation.

It suggests to me that it is good for us to call even the supposedly "lost causes" on the committee, like Burns and Hutchison -- because the more calls they get, the more they will realize that it may hurt them to speak out too strongly against the bill.

Hey guys, regarding Daisy (cat) I feel like Alex when he can't get an update right away. We're coming up on four-thirty my time (AZ) and still no word. The vet wanted to get all the facts before giving us our choices. If there's still a possibility that she can have a good three or four years after radiation, etc., then we would lean that way. If there's too much to overcome, and Daisy is telling us she doesn't want to go on, we will put her to sleep.

I haven't waited by the phone so intensely since I was in high school...

    Thank you!

    Jake

PS Did I read somewhere that they are now swimming Barbaro? Sounds like a great idea for his muscles and condition if they are.

    dear alex
i always smile with the dawn antics of your fine charges..thank you for keeping the life line going..
    the last two days
have tested my nerves but i will have news to report on the romeo tragedy after the shock and trauma the cedar lane stables calms down a bit-- not to mention the heartbreak for the boys and owner of the deceased beloved romeo.
i am thrilled with the excellent staff and care bobby is getting.
what a horse..lord thank you for his care and his soul..
    how blessed can we be?
    dearest barbaro,
i watched the sun travel the arch ..counting the clouds ,and listening for celestial, signs..--after the post which i got later in the day ,due to my schedule
    ,grateful would be an understatement..
i hear you munching in your stall
now with your blanket covering you up..so no chill can get in..
and your beloved family, coming to support you..
we hang and float all over
,above and below and in surround sound..

and the lot of us are working THEREFORE,double time--OUR OWN RACES-- to make it right
    ..FOR ONCE..

i do not want yOu to worry about anything..we are here for the long haul
IF I REALLLY COULD I WOULD POUR GOLD LIGTH to portect you--
rich oxygen to fill your veins and hoof membranes with vitamins and healing jell..
    do not be sad
for the horses that get caught in thick webs of greed and usury..
    we are on it
    ..
m ay your heart beat strong..rest and enjoy our love and silent cheers for every inch of your courage.
i have had a good cry for a few days now--..my tender being cant believe some of the fickle humans who imprison your nation.
.not every horse can be a derby winner and carry the load of a great soul as yours..
    i am so aware tonight,
in the songs from the late fall crickets and stream down the way,
..how connected we all are..and i am listening big time..
    thank you.
i also am recovering from the sorrow of accidents that come out of nowhere.,
of trembling in my boots for many situations that your great ears might have picked up..
i see so many track improvements.
.your mom and dad are the real deal
full of integrity as all your other loved ones..show in their wisdom and commitment day in and out
to be with you. through thick and thin..so are we..

He is spectacular, in every sense of the word.
    And,
How blessed are we to be his comrads? How his journey has become ours makes it so special for all of us.

Gods' speed to Barbaro and to all those who love him and care so much for him.

Lisa and Skyler, (and everyone else!)

    My bracelet is WORKING!

There is a guy at work that can get kind of cruel to me concerning my love of animals. He doesn't have Love for them. He's not abusive, he just doesn't "feel" for them.

He saw my bracelet and was laughing at me about it saying that I got suckered into something. He knows I follow Barbaro. I explained about the Missouri horses that were in an accident on their way to slaughter, how many there were, some of their ages and that there were pregnant mares. He was speechless!!!

He wanted to know why horses so young and pregnant mares were on that truck. He also wanted to know why there were so many on the truck. I explained that this is the reality of horse slaughter. Amongst other cruel facts. He was very quiet. I said nothing more. (I didn't want to push my luck) After some time, he said, "That's wrong. That's just wrong."

I know he doesn't have a political "seat". His opinion doesn't change the world but I hope you can realize how far this information, starting from a bracelet, has reached into Joe's thinking. I'm so happy!!!!

Thank you for reading this through. This is a breakthrough!!

The vet called about Daisy. He's still waiting for lab work, and is taking her home with him tonight, as he did last night, to watch over her. He said to look at her, she doesn't seem in dire circumstances; she purrs, she loves to be rubbed under her chin, she sleeps.

Some sort of tumor is causing arrhythmia, which in turn has made her hind legs useless-- for now. If they can find out the type of tumor, and if it is indeed lymphoma and not worse types, there's still a chance. I'm optimistic because he didn't want to pull the plug, he wants to wait for the results. So he thinks she has a chance.

A slim one, though. I guess it's day by day, like what has gone on with Bobby, and LITF.

Thanks again - I'm going to be early - got almost no sleep last night.

I missed the petition - so if someone would let me know tomorrow where to sign up.

I will continue to talk about it! Being informed enables the word to get out. I have Tim, Alex and everyone posting on this site to thank for that!

    Cheryl G.,
My parents are sooo interested in Barbaro's world and had no idea (like me) about horse slaughter before I found this site. Needless to say, they are appalled.

    Thank you again!

As you all have mentioned, it amazes me when I share what I am up to in campaigning to end the slaughter....people just don't know. Then I realize before discovering my Home & Family, this site & all of you, that I didn't know either. That I was apalled when I found out. But then again that's why it's called America's Dirty Little Secret, isn't it.

Barbaro Nation, it has been a rough week for our beloved pets.

We could use some good vibes. My 20 year old cat Felix is going into the hospital for tests tomorrow. Something is wrong. When I got home from work, he could barely use his hind legs and couldn't stand. We rushed to the vet. He has ruled out stroke but there are numerous other likely problems and we do not know how things will turn out. Kidney failure is a distinct possibility. He came home with me but will return for bloodwork in the morning. He does not appear to actively be in pain but cried during the examination. He just ate some cheese and did get up on his ottoman, but his eyes aren't right and he was far too meek going into the carrier and at the vet's.

This kitty has been with me for 20 years and has loved me unconditionally through the best and worst times of my life; sometimes he was my only friend.

Susan E, Oh my gosh. That is so wonderful that you have had him that long. I recently lost a cat that was seventeen. I thought HE was old. Unfortunately, kidney failure is probably the most likely. They may be able to make him comfortable for a while. Sub Q fluids maybe.

Found this Poem/Story on a Ohio Rescue Site, I posted on the forum but wanted also to share with all here as it goes well with our rescue and slaughter bill campaign:

    Heavens Gate

As I stood in a green meadow, the sun lightly filtering through my back and a cool summer breeze surrounding me, I wondered where I was. There were other horses there, just like me, grazing and happy, surrounded by lush green grass and flowers. This was a most beautiful place with a deep cool stream to drink from and soft ground to lie down on. I looked around and it all seemed so perfect, and then I heard several whinnies and saw a person being followed by several horses, they looked so happy and as they approached a beautiful gate, it opened and they walked through it. I watched as the gate opened and I felt such a sense of peace and love and I knew this was where I wanted to be. Day after day I watched as so many horses followed a person through this gate, they seemed to know each other and were happy to enter together. I went to the gate myself, but it did not open, so I waited for someone to come for me, someone I could follow through the gate.

Time went by and I became friends with all the other horses that had no one to follow through the gate, we all wondered what we had done that no one would lead us through this gate, to this place of peace and love.

One day a person came, this person gently touched all of my friends and said please follow me to the gate and as the gate opened this person said, you may enter without me, but I will return soon. You have many friends that have not even made it to this green meadow yet, they are in pain and hungry and need help. This person watched as the many horses galloped through the gate and then turned to me. The person told me that all of the other horses that entered the Gate followed their owners, they lived wonderful lives and they had owners to follow through the gate.

I was told that the horses that entered that day, the ones that followed this person to the gate were rescued horses, horses that never found one owner, but were helped by the love and care of many people with a spirit.

The rescuer said that we must not enter the Gate today, we have to help our friends who are still suffering and waiting for peace in their lives. The person said they would give part of their spirit to help other people have the will and faith to rescue the horses no one else cared for, and asked me to give part of my spirit to the suffering horses, so that they may never loose hope and will have strength and faith that a miracle can happen.

Haven't posted in quite awhile, but I visit the site/forum every single day to hear how wonderfully you are healing. So happy to hear about your successful cast change. May the news about you healing always be as uplifting and miraculous, just like you.

Barbaro, because of you, I'm going to an open-house at an equine rescue facility in New Jersey this weekend. I can't wait to be up-close to your fellow friends, and maybe even sponsor one or two. I've never really been around horses before, but I'm also thinking about volunteering at the facillity.

I know I'll be thinking about you while I am there, and feeling your spirit in the presence of these other horses. You've gotten under my skin, dear Barbaro, and I thank you for inspiring me to try something that I may not have ever tried, if I hadn't fallen so in love with you. Hugs and scratches to you, big boy.

Glad to read the encouraging news about the cast change on our sweet Barbaro. He should only know how many of us horselovers came together on his behalf , to first pray for his healing, send him our loving wishes, and finally merge as a grassroots movement to help all the horses in this country by influencing Congressional legislation. It has been a long road, being on the Barbaro bandwagon, but well-worth it. Hopefully, this great horse will recover fully, and all horseslaughter will be banned in this country. Let us continue to believe...

Thank you so much for the beautiful bracelet. It has already given me opportunities to talk about Barbaro and the anti-slaughter bill. And thanks to you for raising so much for worthy causes. Yours was a true labor of love.

    Martita,
Your posts are always so fascinating in the way they open almost another dimension of feeling and hope. They are appreciated.

Please know you and your beloved Felix are in my thoughts and prayers. I understand, truly understand, the emotions behind the 20 years you have had each other. My husband and I came close to losing our 15+ year old cat, Chelsea Rose, last month. She is our surrogate "child" whom we dearly love. I understand how much this hurts. We all care about you, and are here for you. Sending you a comforting hug tonight across the miles ....

    Mary L,

Thank you for "Heaven's Gate". I could barely finish... we know this support, we feel it, we do it.

Jake and Susan, I am so sorry. This is a tough time, but it is also the most precious time, something to be cherished and held tight in the heart. Time compresses, emotions expand. Much of our lives we live unconscious until such moments. Such a gift we have with our companions, such miracles.

After long and tough days, preoccupied with difficult and sometimes sad subjects, I have a source of healing laughter and a way to put a smile on my dreams...

It's HAY its me bArbaro !!! (and now he's trying to find an "appropriate" halloween costume!).

Cheryl Jones is one of the most talented and inventive people I have had the pleasure of watching as bArbaro manipulates her into letting him use the keyboard. I do hope this feature turns into a syndicate ! Or at least a book, for children AND adults...

In fact, I have been thinking of sending Gretchen Jackson a note to make sure she is following what her dear boy is doing and saying these days - I hope it is not behind her back. I know there are days when she could use a laugh, and if she hasn't been clued into this secret little part of her boy's life, she certainly should be!

P.S. For those of you who haven't been to this magical site, it is on the Forum under, guess who!

One more note before hitting the hay (that's not hayHEAD, big B!)...

VICARINO, Harry Aleo's two year old colt who was second by a hair several weeks ago, is racing on October 13th at the Fresno Race Track - Attention, Robbie in Fresno!! I believe the video replays are available on the CalRacing website.

However, that is Friday the 13th... I guess Harry and Greg are not superstitious.

Dr. says there are no infections and that you are doing beautifully and that you are the "big boss." He says that you know you are special. I thought so! I hear Dr. Dean is having a hard time keeping you from rearing up, listen to your Dr. he knows best. You look so cute with your white leg wraps, that's how I remember always seeing you and so nice to see you like that again. So happy you were out grazing a couple hours after you recovered. I will say goodnight now, healing prayers have been said, you candle is lit and time to tuck you in. I love you big guy, will check on you when I get up. Sleep tight.

    Hey guys...

I enjoyed the USA TODAY article which included this quote...

"If gelding this horse would save his life, they would have me castrate him in a heartbeat," Richardson says of the Jacksons.

Needlesstosay, the huge sigh of relief that you hear is from BARBARO, himself...Gelding is one surgical skill that he is glad Dr. Dean will not be perfecting on him...LOL

Prayers for Daisy, Felix, Darlin, Hocks, and little Kylie, and all other humans and animals needing love and healing today. May God enfold you in His loving, protective arms.

Alex, meant to mention that I heard that the steeplechaser, McDynamo (also a son of Dynaformer, Bobby's dad), works out between races by being used for fox hunting. Bet you're glad you don't have to make that part of your exercise routine! Altho it sounds like you come close to that from time to time anyway! Stay safe :)

    Good Morning FOB's!

Alex, thanks so much for passing along the wonderful USA today story. Barbaro and Dr. Dean - now THAT's a Dynamic Duo!

Barbaro, you have such a wonderful way of understanding those close to you. The Jacksons and Dr. Dean are so worried and concerned about you and so every day you show them that you are doing just fine. You adapt marvelously to change! You're getting better and you even show them that you're "getting a little bossy". I'm sure they are all so relieved and happy! You go ahead and be a little "pushy". You deserve it, and it's got to be like therapy for the Jacksons and Dr. Dean to see your personality is still very strong. We all are in awe of you. Just when I think wow, he's really doing well, you show everyone you're doing exceptionally well.

You just nudge away Barbaro. You are a star AND a champion and your feistiness is great medicine for your family and friends. May God continue to bless you.

I have a comment and a qustion about the USA Today article. Did you notice what Mrs. Jackson said..

"Barbaro is going to be a miracle when he makes it out because the odds were so stacked against him," Gretchen Jackson says.

She says WHEN he makes it out. I think that's the first time they've used that kind of language.

My question is about this quote:
Sadly, Barbaro sweated so profusely during his initial six-hour operation that the blistering on his left side resulted. White hair will eventually fill in. The part of the tail he lost just after surgery will regrow, the doctor says.

Why will white hair fill in? Won't it be the color he is?

Posted by: Ashley Bruck at October 11, 2006 1:52 PM

Keep up the good work, champ! Lots of love and prayers coming your way from Northeast PA!

Posted by: Jenn at October 11, 2006 1:53 PM

    Ashley:

For white hair to grow back is common for horses who get sores or injuries to the skin. I have seen it on horses who may have had bad or persistent saddles sores from ill fitting saddles. All it means is that white hair will grow back in that spot instead of brown..

Posted by: Sue W. at October 11, 2006 1:56 PM

    Carol,

If there is a horse rescue organization near San Diego that has rescued horses that were going to slaughter, maybe that can be a local tie in to S1915 and your two Senators being cosponsors. That is what I am trying with the local Dallas station. (Although we have plenty local tie in to this issue.)

Posted by: Patty in Dallas at October 11, 2006 1:56 PM

Alex - that was a GREAT article!

He is a very special horse. I think his pain threshold his much higher than a normal horse. But it's his attitude that has got him this far, and I'm so glad he's grazing every day. That's his light at the end of the tunnel.

I love it that he's pushing people around, and that he knows he's a star.

He is a great racehorse. Even injured, he's a great racehorse. He has it all. He has stamina!

    ####

Waiting to hear about Daisy. I'm inspired that her attitude is good, and if there's a way, our vet will find it. I keep thinking of Gretchen Jackson almost knowing they'd have to put Bobby down after the laminitis, but then looking at him and seeing that she couldn't.

All we have is a chance. We won't let her suffer, but if the vet thinks she can get back to a normal life, we'll try for it. More updates later, I hope!

    Hi Folks:

Please light candles for Bobby, Mike, Erin, Kylie, Daisy, Cahill, Felix and all our human and animal friends who need our help and prayers.

Don't forget to call/fax/e-mail the Six Key Senators - we need to end horse slaughter now.

I got some "Americans Don't Eat Horses" decals from Lifesvers Inc. Wild Horse Rescue www.wildhorserescue.org - they will send them to anyone with a small donation. Many people ask about the decal when they see it - most people here in MA don't have a clue about horse slaughter.

    #####
Bdude is doing good - he is eating - steady on his feet - purring - and even "roaring" with his big burmese mouth - thanks for your prayers.

    #####
Praying for Daisy and Felix - Bdude has been in kidney failure for almost 5 years now. He wouldn't eat the Science Diet kidney food and would not tolerate sub-q fluids. We have been feeding him people food - chicken/turkey/beef and giving him spring water - cats don't need fluoride and he has been doing well for the most part. Prayers really help when things get bad. Don't give up hope - they will tell you when it's time for them to go.

Thanks to Tim & ALex for the site and updates.

Yes Jake, Barbaro is special and has it all. He's proved himself as a racehorse on turf, on dirt, in slop, in the Kentucky Derby and now in this diffrent kind of race that most horses never face. Anything that's put in front of him he tackles. Any obsticale, overcome. A truly amazing animal that sometimes seems humanlike, except for his perfection.

Folks: here's a great opportunity to put your intentions to end horse slaughter out to the universe on a higher spiritual level:

"Cosmic Trigger Event on 17th October. Need 1million+ people.

A cosmic trigger event is occurring on the 17th of October 2006. This is the beginning, one of many trigger events to come between now and 2013.

An ultraviolet (UV) pulse beam radiating from higher dimensions in universe-2 will cross paths with the Earth on this day. Earth will remain approximately within this UV beam for 17 hours of your time.

This beam resonates with the heart chakra, it is radiant fluorescent in nature, blue/magenta in color. Although it resonates in this frequency band, it is above the color frequency spectrum of your universe-1 which you, Earth articulate in. However due to the nature of your soul and soul groups operating from Universe-2 frequency bands it will have an effect.

The effect is every thought and emotion will be amplified intensely one million-fold. Yes, we will repeat, all will be amplified one millions time and more.

Every thought, every emotion, every intent, every will, no matter if it is good, bad, ill, positive, negative, will be amplified one million times in strength.

    What does this mean ?

Since all matter manifest is due to your thoughts, i.e. what you focus on, this beam will accelerate these thoughts and solidify them at an accelerated rate making them manifest a million times faster than they normally would.

For those that do not comprehend. Your thoughts, what you focus on create your reality.

This UV beam thus can be a dangerous tool. For if you are focused on thoughts which are negative to your liking they will manifest into your reality almost instantly. Then again this UV beam can be a gift if you choose it to be.

Mission-1017 requires approximately one million people to focus on positive, benign, good willed thoughts for themselves and the Earth and Humanity on this day. Your thoughts can be of any nature of your choosing, but remember whatever you focus on will be made manifest in a relatively faster than anticipated time frame. To some the occurrences may almost be bordering on the miracle.

All we ask is positive thoughts of love, prosperity, healing, wealth, kindness, gratitude be focused on.

This UV beam comes into full affect for 17hrs on the 17th of October 2006.

No matter what time zone you are in the hours are approximately 10:17am on the 17th of October to 1:17am on the 18th October.

The peak time will be 17:10 (5:10pm) on the 17th October.

You do not need to be in a meditative state through out this time, though would be beneficial. The main key time no matter what time zone you are in will be the peak time of 17:10 (5:10 pm). Perhaps at this time if you can find a peaceful spot or location to focus. The optimum is out in the vicinity of grounded nature, likened to that of a large tree or next to the ocean waves.

Focus on whatever it is you desire. What is required for the benefit of all Earth and Humanity is positive thoughts of loving nature.

We call this UV beam trigger event, "818" gateway.

Please forward this message to as many people as you know who will use this cosmic trigger event to focus positive, good willed thoughts.

We require approximately 1-million people across globe to actively participate in this event. Please use whatever communication mediums you have at your disposal. Reach out to as many people as possible. We require 1-million plus people at the least to trigger a shift for humanity from separation and fragmentation to one of unification and oneness.

This is your opportunity to take back what is rightfully yours i.e. Peace and Prosperity for all Earth and Mankind.

This is a gift, a life line from your universe so to speak, an answer to your prayers. What you do with it and whether or not you choose to participate is your choice."

    Morning Barbaro:

I got a chance to come in for a few minutes before I leave for work. I hope your having a great morning. I think Alex said rain is coming--gues that means your getting our storm from last week. Tell Dr R that Gortex is great waterproof stuff and that he should don some and get out there with you! All he has to do is get some Scotch Guard (the one with the blue lid) and spray away (that's when it starts showing signs of waterproofing wearing off). Just make sure he does this outdoors and plugs his nose--cause its stinky!

Seriously you keep doing like you are. I saw a friend yesterday who is TOTALLY blown away by Mom and Dad Jackson and the Team. She remembers when...(I don't want to go there). But Mom and Dad J are being great examples of what loving parents can do. And what loving Dr's (in the sense of Dr R has been bitten by the Barbaro spirit) can do given experience, time and money.

    For Shelleye:

I also talked to my first grownup yesterday about this bill. Went pretty well. But I don't think this person will call anyone. But you never know. She might write our Senators--who while onboard still need to know that people want this bill out of committee and onto the floor.

I called Senator Stevens! Scared. I don't usually do stuff like this. But I got out of my comfort zone and called! Dan answered and he was very nice. He asked me where I was from--I think that's part of that tally you were writing about yesterday. And thanked me.

    Well off to work.

All of you that have lost pets to cancer is so awful. I guess I should say "all of us". There seems to be such a large amount worldwide of an increase in animals getting different types of cancers. Our hairy friends seem to live longer, but alas, they are plagued with horrible tumors of some sort. It is overwhelming at times. It only takes a minute to make a call to your Senator or to the Committee. No big explanation is necessary, just say you are asking for their support in moving the legislation or co-sponsoring the bill. I am adding that it would be a real shame for the Senate to drop the ball, now that the House has finally managed to get it passed. In the case of Sen Sarbanes (MD), I did add that since this is his last term, it would be a great thing to add to his accomplishments in office.

    #####
    Martita - you are amazing.
Steve, Jake, SusanE - prayers and healing for your sick kitties. Do what your heart tells you, but maybe wait a day or two before making a decision that cannot be changed.
My Charlotte (aka Lottie) was dx with severe kidney failure in Feb and she is still here, doing very well in fact. In Feb, she was in ICU for 5 days, came home and went into seclusion for nearly a month and took 2 months to get back to "herself." Her vets did not push me to euthanize (some will), but limited her prognosis to very, very guarded. They are amazed that today she is playing and bossing my other 2 Meezers who are twice her size. It was hard to see her "suffering" in Feb, but I am glad now that I gave her the chance to survive. She gets subQ fluids every day and special additives in her food to limit phosphorus intake and boost her hemoglobin levels and immune system, otherwise she is "normal." Well, as normal as a Siamese can be!
I also lost my 16 yo Meezer to cancer last October. She was dx in April 2003 and given less than 6 months to live, but survived on her own terms for nearly 18 months. Amazing things can happen, but we all know that, right?
My prayers and healing thoughts for all in need.

CALVER HORSES UPDATE FROM DAYS END FARM:

    Chris,
They are all doing as well as can be expected at this time. They were all examined by our veterinarian, Dr. Javier Donatelli from Monocacy Equine Associates. They are, obviously, severely undernourished. Many have other issues such as skin diseases, injuries and the smallest red roan Appy (Baker Bean) had a nail in his hoof that was removed. Baker is the weakest of the nine and continues to need help getting up from a laying position. He has been fed, small amounts around the clock and continues to be watched very carefully. All the horses are being fed free choice hay and are on three meals a day at the moment.

Thank you for all your help getting the word out!

I JUST COPIED THIS FROM THE FORUM...CAN'T RECALL WHO POSTED IT, BUT THESE HORSES NEED OUR HELP!

I just want to make everyone aware about what is happening in Indiana.

There is a man there (a school teacher) that has over 100 horses and has severly neglected them. The IN Horse Rescue has seized 35 of them already. This man is going to be brought up on FELONY & Animal TORTURE charges.

Please look at the following attachment & see the pictures of the horses at the bottom of the page. These animals need our help. There are different divisions of the rescue and they will all need help.

This man will have several charges brought against him and the probability of the horses being taken away from him is high. All these horses will need homes.

    www.indianahorserescue.com

I have been in contact with the North division of this rescue. They said they would be glad to speak to anyone who has questions.

Please look... the torture these babies have gone through is heartbreaking - we need to help.

    Jen,
Thanks for the info, I was not sure on the hoofs, was guessing due to what I was looking at. People need to be put throught he same and worse treatment that they put INNOCENT animals through, and then made to suffer even worse. The more I am around people the more I love my horse (animal). heard that once and never forgot the words. There is nothing more meaningful than unconditional love.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at October 11, 2006 4:49 PM

Never fear Friar Tuck! i am reposting a comment that I thought was very good:

Regarding slaughter being an option for starving horses....

I counter this argument by pointing out that there are existing laws on the books that require all animal owners to properly maintain the animals in their care. The horses that are severely emaciated are typically not purchased by the killers as they want horses that are already 'fed-out'.

I emphasize that these are two separate issues. One is to end the slaughter of horses and the other is to enforce existing laws. Ending slaughter does not increase the incidence of underfed horses but it does help to end suffering and theft. Those who starve their horses will continue to do so regardless of whether slaughter is available or not.

I believe there are two different mindsets involved. One is that of money and the other is stupidity. Although both share a common thread of lack of compassion the motivations are quite different. If the people who starve their horses took them to an auction, they would do so prior to the horses becoming emaciated. They don't. These horses are usually reported to humane societies by a neighbor.

Although tougher laws are needed to ensure the welfare of animals, this issue is separate from the slaughter issue.

    On Senator Inouye

He is Senator Stevens' co-chair on the Commerce Committee. They are really good friends. They work together to set the agenda for what gets debated in the committee. I found out all of that yesterday from the committee website and from conversations with aides. I suggested to Shelley that it might be good for Sen Inouye to get lots of calls, too, and she agreed. Senator Inouye is a co-sponsor of S. 1915, like Senator Stevens; and all of this works to our advantage in getting the two of them to calendar debate on the bill right after the recess, if we keep on them about it.

Shelley also said that all committee members should continue to get calls.

Best methods of communication to senators:

    Telephone
    Fax

Not email -- they get too much junk and can't sort through it fast enough.
Not snail mail -- in D.C. it has to go through elaborate security screenings. (In the state offices, it may be read sooner.)

Maybe the student at UPENN can relay his article also to all of the universites I think what he is doing will have another BARBARO EFFECT! I hope he reaches everyone with his efforts, even the news media if permitted, what do you think?
When the HR503 bill gets passed we may have to start a new mission , to find ways to protect the wild horses, none of them are safe either, are they being chased by helicopters and taken to slaughterhouses too? Why can't those people let the Mustangs enjoy their freedom and not hunt them down, the thought of what they are doing to the horse culture is horrifying and appalling, maybe the BARBARO NATION can speak for them too,

It is really good and brave of you to start calling Senators. You don't have to say much. You can just say you're calling to say that you support S. 1915 and that you hope the senator will do everything possible to move it forward before it is too late.

If it's a senator who is not a co-sponsor, you can say you are calling to ask the senator's position on S. 1915. When they tell you, you can say that you support it, and ask the aide to tell the senator that. Sometimes I just ask some questions about how the bill gets processed, etc. The aides are used to calls from citizens who are interested in a bill but don't quite know how it all works...and I am certainly one of those. Most of the aides are very nice.

If they ask what state you are from -- people handle this in different ways. I am almost never asked this, but if I am, I always say I am from California. I say that horses in my state are affected by the bill; my own senators are already co-sponsors, but they can't do it alone; and I am calling other senators in the hope that they will help to move the bill.

Just relax and keep calling! It is so good that you've started!

Marilyn, Nancy, Shelley, and Cathy in CA,

Have you seen John Garamende's new commercial? He is running for Lt. Governor. He says how he was raised on a ranch, is shown around horses, and riding one at the end. This may be a side note but I am going to contact him and tie Prop 6 from CA
    (PROHIBITION OF HORSE SLAUGHTER AND
    SALE OF HORSEMEAT FOR HUMAN
CONSUMPTION ACT OF 1998) to S1915.

If he wants my vote he is going to have to do more to help the horses in CA that are being shipped across state lines for slaughter.

OK, I'm done! It feels good though to be involved, doesn't it?? :-)

Most are very nice and will take the time to explain things. Most calls they get are from people that don't know much about how the system
    works.
And, yes, all you have to do is ask for support for S1915 and your voice will be counted in the tally. You don't need to go into any details.

CHRIS BYERS AND KATHY J -

    Thank you for the information.

Had to call them, my Paypal account is messed up. I was going to use the phrase two birds with one stone and decided it was not good, anyway, talked to (braindead, forgot her name), anyway we were talking and asked her to tell everyone to call their Senators.

Productive call, did two things with one call.

OK, another silly, albiet possibly effective, idea here.....pardon me in advance but I'm just trying to get more people calling here in my neck of the woods. Grasping at straws for ideas.

I work in an office full of "donut worshipers". Yes, it's crazy but true. Tomorrow it is supposed to be the coldest day of the fall, so far, so I am bringing in nice warm donuts and a container of very good coffee.

To lure in the 25 people I work with I will serve up donuts and politely ask that they call. No hardball, no pressure, just a kind request to call after they've enjoyed their breakfast. I hope at least a few extra calls result in this.

Regarding the abused horses in Indiana: I hear people saying things like I want to kill that man, he should be shot, horse-whipped. I understand your anger, let's go pound a pillow! I somehow feel that wanting to kill this guy that was responsible for the neglected, abused horses is a waste of our energy. He has to be a sick person and by that I mean psychologically sick and wanting to kill him only brings us down to his level. I swear pounding a pillow or a sofa cushion and yelling is very therapeutic!

Let us gather that anger and transform it into personal power that makes us advocates of the speechless creatures of the earth!

    Good Morning All!

Thanks, as always, to you Alex. Hope the "toothache" (love the analogy) is healed. We so appreciate your efforts, whatever happens. I promise not to send you an email that screams "hysterical woman" if things are held up a bit.

Thank you most kindly for your words. I'm so happy you enjoy bArbaro's pearls. I've wondered sometimes if Mrs. Jackson is able read the thread and enjoyed it, as well. I've hoped she is okay with the whole concept, and that she understands that it's all in good fun. And evidently what can be said about me is that I think and talk (?) like a precocious three year old colt. How weird is THAT?? I'm just so pleased that you like it.

Will check in later with everyone. Need to read more about BD the handsome Burmese, Miss Daisy and see how Felix the kiddeninsoot is doing.

    Joan,
I also do not understand. To me, when you make a commitment to an animal to take care of them, it is an unbreakable trust. They have no say, they are not disposable. I could never imagine treating my animals with any disrepect. (ask me about the 600 tooth job for my rescue Pom...)

Steve, Many thanks for that message. I have also heard about this, that the potential for planetary healing is great on the 16th and 17th. The time you gave, 5:10 on the 17th is that eastern time or other?

Attention those in Florida. Saturday is Festival of the Sun at Calder Race Course, a big racing day. They have the parade of breeds and a thoroughbred retirement ceremony. Maybe one of you who went there to meet can contact the person who met you and we can see about giving
her some anti-slaughter flyers or having a table to hand out information. I would be willing to help out, I go to Calder occasionally.

    Back to faxing and calling.

Thrilled with the news sweet Barbaro!

Bonnie those terms are a figure of speech.. I said horse whipped, and I am not going to retract that one. I can think it and we know that won't happen.

Some of these abusers need to endure the same treatment as they inflict on their animals and see if they like it.

    STAN

Stan is a teenage Dark Bay Thoroughbred gelding with a star. He suffered scrapes on his body, face and legs. In addition to his injuries, Stan is thin and has bowed tendons on his front legs. After the horrific accident, he collapsed and rescue staff immediately administered IV fluids and medications which he is still receiving. He may be discharged from an equine medical facility to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch from next week.

I wanted to let everyone know that I have volunteered at the Indiana Horse Rescue North. They are a new division and they really need help as well. They have taken in a few of the horses that were tortured. When making donations, please consider donating to this branch as well.

I will be volunteering there on Sunday. We are going to help build new stalls & fencing. They may be getting more of these horses and want to have the shelter for them. If anyone is in the Northern IN area and wants to help let me know & I will give you the directions. w.szara@comcast.net

Don't feel bad about not being able to look. Since I worked in racing, and saw the love and trust in their eyes, and having seen more than one breakdown in my time...I too, have a hard time looking. I have enough problems with the description of Exceller's end ,my ALYDAR, Ruffian, Go for Wand.
Someone sent me the Go for Wand site last night, again, (I was actually there) and it can be upsetting . I prefer to think of the LOVE in their eyes, sitting there cleaning tack and just being with them, reading the Bloodhorse and putting up their hay racks and Sweetfeed, although I do, and have , been working against this awful thing for 25 years. As a Race person, I may have been more concerned with TBs. They ALL need our help. And I thank this site for showing me this.
    Love to Family and Posse,

Me Too! - In fact the first time I went to volunteer was last wednesday (Feast of St Francis) and the horses played a cruel horsey joke on me. After I had cleaned half the stall (3 horses were watching from the back end) one of them came over, looked at me, went to the clean area, pooped, then went back with his buddies.

Kathy J. and all the Stan Mommies. Jen here. No I didnt see him but I asked Earlene about him. He will be at Longmeadow soon. He is the only one with a tatoo. They are having trouble reading it..They are going to have someone with experience come there to read it when he gets to the ranch. They are going to track down where he came from. Earlene told me she believed several of these horses could have been stolen. The fact none of them had coggins, which they would have had to if they came from a sale barn, is kind of supicious. And the fact no one wants to claim ownership. Word is that maybe the owner of George Baker stables was the owner. No one wants to admit it. It will all soon come out in the wash. a lot of investigations going on. Jen

Ps. I am going to go back in 2 weeks to see the rest. I can give another update then.

Thank you Jen, I did read that about Stan and his tattoo, I just hope and pray that he was not stolen, because if he was stolen I would be worrying about him being returned to a (possibly) less then wonderful home, then he might otherwise find by being at LongMeadow. I pray for these horses all the time.

Stan mommies: If you can get through the video from their website you will see a short blurb of Stan grazing, he sounds happy you can hear him. Its real quick, but you know its him with his red and blue halter.

just remember what side to stay on (the left) and don't volunteer to do a hoof pick unless you know.
I have seen some accidents, but it mostly involved men (sorry, Alex). Women have a nicer touch and they instinctively know it. Nothing intimidating about the most beautiful creatures.
