Barbaro Updates: 99

updates are now here.

Update 808: The USA Today story I highlighted this morning is actually on the front page of their paper today, along with a lovely headshot. I was talking to someone about another project I am supposed to be working on (have not started) and she noted Barbaro was on CNN this morning. I love that he is in the main stream media.

OK, those of you who have a fear for their dentist will empathize with this. Imagine you have a toothache, which comes and goes. At times it gets pretty bad, but then it goes away. You know you need to go to the dentist, but you keep putting it off. Now you have made your mind up, and you are committed to your trip to the dentist. You know it may hurt, and actually may be quite painful, but you hope it will cure the toothache you have been experiencing. OK, that is how I feel about needing to move this site to a dedicated server, which is going to happen, I hope, over the next 24 - 36 hours. There may be glitches, but I am hoping that after the move, all will be well, and the problems we have had will be behind us. Therefore if the site behaves badly over the next 24 - 36 hours, you know why (or at least you will know it is a result of us trying to fix the site more permanently).

Update 807: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (tuesday night). I saw Michael Matz and his crew coming to the track after I had finished my second set. While they were approaching me Michael and others in his set were making light hearted remarks about some (hurdle) schooling efforts of Michael McCarthy (x Delaware jockey) that was going on outside a neighboring barn. This light hearted banter was a good signal things were well with Barbaro.

Another warm morning this morning at Fair Hill, although it seems rain may be coming in a little later. My first set was a mile gallop, after a 3/4 mile jog. The second set we went to the gate. The 2yo I was on had been to the gate before, but not at Fair Hill, and thus not with me. We cantered out of the gate, he was pretty good really.
update 7:55 am

Update 806: A nice article in the USA Today: Against all odds, Barbaro perseveres, it also includes some new pictures. The following are a couple of excerpts:

A surgical resection was done July 12, resulting in the removal of 80% of the hoof wall from Barbaro's left hind foot. That also explains the white sign with blue lettering that greets visitors at the entrance to the facility: "Grow Hoof Grow."

The sign is the first indication, but hardly the last, of an unwavering show of support for Barbaro.

The New Bolton lobby is filled with tributes, including 12 oversized cards from Churchill Downs. Beneath the heading "Once a Derby winner, always a Derby winner" are greetings from scores of fans:

"Hi, Barbaro. I hope you get well soon. Love, Mia."

"Best wishes, Barbaro. You're a winner and you'll pull through. Much love, Jim."

and

"He loves pushing people around. He absolutely knows he's the big boss horse," Richardson says. "He's got lots of star power -- and he knows it."

Barbaro has not required pain medication for close to six weeks. His right hind leg, with 27 screws used to repair fractured cannon, sesamoid and long pastern bones, is becoming increasingly stable. His cast was changed Monday. His left hoof is growing gradually.

If it's too soon to declare Barbaro a medical marvel, his comeback is further evidence of the fortitude that helped him to the largest Derby winning margin, 61/2 lengths, since Assault's 8-length rout in '46.

I was actually interviewed for this article, but did not make it to the final piece. The Daily Pennsylvanian (University of Pennsylvania's School paper) called up last night for a brief interview, so that piece might be coming out later this week. They were looking for others to contact them for the story: Daily Pennsylvanian Article. Now that will be fun to be in, I worked at Penn for about seven years.

The Barbaro update should be about 8 am again.

Update 805: I just spoke to Peter Brette (6:15 pm), Barbaro had a good day after the cast change yesterday. Peter had spoken to Michael who had visited. Barbaro had been out and looked comfortable.

I spoke to Steve Willard (Giacomo's exercise rider) earlier today. They were happy with his race in the Goodwood, especially the way he finished (he was third to Lava Man and Brother Derek). The extra eighth of a mile in the Breeders' Cup Classic may well suite him. They are looking to that race for now. Giacomo seems to have come out of saturday's race well.

Update 804: The rest of this morning at Fair Hill went well. I breezed Chappy on the turf, across the road on the steeplechase track. It was actually the first time I had breezed one on the turf for many years. She went well, she stretched out nicely coming up the hill from the quarter pole to the wire.

As I was going over to the turf track I passed Graham Motion's set coming back. Better Talk Now galloped over the turf course. There is still no decision as to his next start (Canada or the Breeders' Cup.) It seems Film Maker came out of her Belmont race well. She has yet to train, but will likely tomorrow. Round Pond, Michael Matz's mare, actually did train today. I think Peter took her out back, and also appears to have come out of her race well.

Barclay Tagg was at Fair Hill this morning. He said Showing Up will likely race on saturday at Belmont, in the Jamaica. Funny Cide is being pointed for a race the following saturday, a New York Bred stake: Empire Classic.

Update 803: New Bolton's update regarding the cast change yesterday Veterinarians change Barbaro's right hind leg cast:

Veterinarians at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital changed Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro's cast yesterday, Monday, October 9. "We placed Barbaro under general anesthesia to remove the old cast on his right hind limb and took new radiographs to assess the continued healing of the original injuries," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "I was pleased with the continued progression of healing and the overall condition of this leg." Barbaro had another successful pool-recovery, and was resting comfortably in his stall after the procedure. In addition to replacing the cast, doctors trimmed his feet and applied a new shoe on the right hind foot. A few hours after recovery, he was taken back outside to graze and was comfortable on both hind legs.

"There are no signs of infection and the primary incisions have healed surprisingly well," said Dr. Richardson. "Because he has had a cast on for so long, there are a few cast sores, but nothing serious."

Barbaro's left hind foot, which had laminitis, continues to gradually improve. "There is good growth along the quarters (closer to the heel) but there will need to be much more healing along the front of the hoof," said Dr. Richardson, who cautioned that "we still have many months of healing ahead of us."

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, October 17, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Good Morning, Fans of Barbaro!

First of all, Friar Tuck, please tell MM she is astounding me. For everybody else, if there is ANYTHING you want to manifest, this is the week to write it down then pray and meditate on it...energy peaks on the 17th/18th. Expect the unexpected.

Jake, my heart goes out to you, your mom and Daisy. It reminds me of a cat I had - Shadow (nicknamed Bullet Butt after Calvin and Hobbes). He was a beautiful silver tiger cat - had a tumor on his heart and went quickly. He was the best cat to be raised with Sam - two of them were inseparable.

####
gotta ask for prayers for Avi - can't go into detail, but he's trying very hard to communicate to his owner. Pray that his message comes thru. I already know and have communicated it to his owner - just need to have her open her heart just a little more to understand. I need to save this horse.

LITF, you are an angel, my Long Time Sun. If you can, please let those who miss you here feel your shining presence...let them know you're OK.

Barbaro, am very happy to hear about the cast change. You know what you need to do. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Judge, boy did you ever get busted...but I would have tried the same thing...:)

Alex, heard from Sherry in AZ...she will also be at Fair Hill on Saturday morning around 9 or so. She is gonna have a neat time here...she is so excited and I can't wait to meet her. Anybody else want to come to FH? I'd love to meet more of "the family".

Gotta get back to calling and e-mailing "the 6" and Sen. Santorum.

Take care, everybody,

With all the site problems yesterday, I thought it best to re-post this list. These are the senators that were mentioned in Alex's update as being the "key to our success"

SIX SENATORS TO FOCUS ON

Senator Frist, Majority Leader to get on calendar
202-224-3135 phone
202-228-4637 fax

Senator Stevens,co-sponsor and Committee Chairman
to help move it out of committee
202-224-3004 phone
202-224-2354 fax

Senator Ensign, Sponsor of S1915 and committee member to move it out of committee
202-224-6244 phone
202-224-2193 fax

Senator Landrieu, co-sponsor
202-224-5824 phone
202-224-9735 fax

Senator Reed, co-sponsor
202-224-4642 phone
202-224-4680 fax

Senator McConnell
202-224-2541 phone
202-224-2499 fax

Also, please stay after your own senators. Those that are not on board yet to co-sponsor.

Those that are already co-sponsors to let them know how important this issue is to you as a constituent so they will help move it.

Remember, at this point, most of them know the details. They just tally up the calls at the end of the day. Keep it short, polite and courteous. It's the NUMBER of calls that will make the difference.

Thanks and good luck to us all!!!!

Great news for Barbaro! I am assuming his leg was not well enough to just have a splint. It very nice to see that both legs are doing so well.

There was a guy named "Judge" at either Aqueduct or Belmont Park when I worked at those tracks. I wonder if it's the same guy??? I often wondered if this was the guys name or if it's a nickname.

Jake....my heart goes out to you. What a wonderful life & wonderful caretakers Daisy has had. The saving grace under these kinds of circumstances is knowing that they got the best possible life.

Jeanette C...praying little Kyle will be home and in loving arms very soon. So glad she is doing better.

Cindy....Cahill is so lucky to have a Mom like you. I bet you're anxious to get him back into his loving space.

Yesterday was a tough day. Couldn't get on the board til late only to find "trouble in River City". I don't like preaching to the choir but just want to say we are a Family and are in this together. We All Love Animals, Barbaro and first and foremost for me, want to end the MURDER of our horses. I's natural to disagree but remember that when we do there is something greater going on here. We are trying to make a difference. So when we disagree let it be OK and move on because we are wasting precious energy & time that could be spent working on S1915.
Know that even though many of us don't know each other there is a lot of respect and love here. This is my family now. I will not be content in my life until we accomplish our goal.
Enough said and please take this in the spirit that it said in love.

Expect A Miracle

Good morning, and it IS a good morning,

Excellent news about our boy! Bobby, so glad all went well with the cast change. Sorry about those cast sores Honey, I hope they don't hurt. Dr. Richardson is taking such wonderful care of you; and I know you are a wonderful patient. Thank you Lord for the blessing of Barbaro's healing, for Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, and for Dr. R. and all the amazing caregivers at NBC.

Alex, thank you for all you do! You are our life line.

Lyn,

I will be praying for Avi and Avi's owner. They are lucky to have you on their side. Whatever the need, I pray it will be met soon.

I hope everyone had a chance to vote for Mike Rea's family to get the ABC home make over. If you haven't had a chance, please visit Mike's recovery website (just type in Mike Rea in the address line) and scroll down to the bottom. Every vote counts, I hope we can convince the "powers that be" that Mike's family is the most deserving.

Joan, this was from last week:

Humane Society wants custody of animals involved in accident
By Tim O'Neil
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
10/04/2006

The Humane Society of Missouri won't pursue its costs of caring for the horses that were injured in a truck wreck - if an insurance company will hand over ownership of the animals, a society official said Wednesday.

The Humane Society has been caring for 25 horses and a mule that survived the crash Sept. 27 on Interstate 44 near Stanton. Debbie Hill, director of rescue investigations for the society, said the cost of caring for them has risen above $50,000.

Sixteen other horses either died in the crash or had to be euthanized. They were being hauled from Stroud, Okla., to the Cavel International Inc. horse-meat processing plant in DeKalb, Ill., about an hour west of Chicago.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says Charles Carter, a broker from Loveland, Colo., owned the horses. Hill said the Humane Society is dealing with Carter's insurance company to obtain custody of the surviving animals.

Normally, she said, an insurance company would take the animals after settling with an animal broker, such as Carter. The Humane Society also would have a claim against the insurance policy for the expenses it incurred during the rescue and follow-up care.

"But our intent is to get custody of the horses," she said. "That would leave us with a big hit, but it's in the best interest of the horses."

The society has created a "Horse Hero" program to raise money for their care, complete with a Web page that can be reached via www.hsmo.org, showing photos of each horse. It also has mailed more than 65 information packets to people who have expressed interest in adopting the animals.

Under direction of the Humane Society, area veterinarians continue to care for 18 of the animals and eight others are at the Humane Society's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch near Union. Earlene Cole, the ranch director, said three of the rescued horses remain in serious condition, with survival uncertain. "

JOAN ROYA: Fear not. The Humane Society of MO put liens on the horses for the medical and rescue costs--medical alone is $50,000 and climbing. This exceeds the insured value of the horses and the HSMO is working things out with the insurers to keep the horses in lieu of executing on the liens.

BOBBY, you scamp. Good morning, Starshine! At last news (thank you, Web Daddy) and it's good news. Very good. I am relieved you're still in a cast because I worry about weight distribution on those long legs of yours. Cheer up, the cast will be gone soon, I'm sure. And you went grazing after you lolled around in the recovery pool!

If I ever have to have surgery, I'm using you as my inspiration. Keep it up, sweetie.

I don't have my notes with me, but I think I was the one who spoke with Senator Burns's aide, and she indicated he was definitely pro-slaughter. I do think it's good for these senators still to get calls, just so they can see the numbers coming in...maybe just say, please let the senator know I support S.1915. Just so the aides can hear how many calls are coming in and keep track of them. Not to engage the aides in dialogue on it. I guess I just hope that if they hear all of the support for the bill they will be reluctant to speak out too strongly against it on the floor.

Mary S:

Hocks is a Black Quarterhorse-type stallion with left hind sock. He suffered numerous body and facial scrapes and lacerations on his rear legs and chest. Immediately following the horrific accident, veterinarians anesthetized him to suture his legs and chest. He also received IV fluids and medications to keep him comfortable. An infection has developed in the right hind leg that has to be flushed daily. Both back legs are wrapped and have to be changed daily as well. He is also not eating well and is being checked for a broken or cracked tooth or a jaw injury. He is in critical condition.

Good advise. No sense debating with someone who is not listening. I haven't seen Vanity Fair yet but it sounds like Senator Burns is exposed for burying a rider regarding the Wild Horses. I'm going to pick up the issue today. This article could be a useful tool.

Thank You ## Marilyn ,

I wanted to call Burns just as an "elective" since
I've finished calling all my list today. Have called quite a few additionals today also, but really
wanted Burns if he was the big supporter !

I still would like calls to the two N.C. Senators
who are not sponsors yet:

Sen. Elizabeth Dole 1 202 224 6342

Sen. Richard Burr 1 202 224 3154

They haven't asked me for a zip code in days now
but some nc zips are 28211 , 27983, 28120

We need calls to pour in to these two. thanks.

I hope you don't mind me jumping in on Senator Burns but he is very very pro-slaughter. If you like to see what he has done go to www.returntofreedom.org click on the right side where is say RTF Press Releases and scroll down to you see November 2005. He attached a rider making it legal to slaughter Americas Wild Horses. He is a very bad egg.

The halters should be standard nylon horse size halters. Leadropes should be just a 6 foot leadrope with a good snap at the end. She says they are desperate for them. They have over 120 horses and very few leadropes. Someone sent halters but they had the tie at the crown. Not suitable for these horses. All of these things can be sent to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. The address is on the site at Longmeadow Rescue ranch.org. Leadropes will probably run about 5-6 dollars and halters are usually 10-15 dollars. Anyone could probably go to somewhere like Stateline tack or Dover tack online and find anything they wanted...

Just a personal suggestion for anyone who sponsored a horse. YOu could always order a halter with horses name on it. they put the name on the noseband of the nylon halters. Jen

Posted by: Jen at October 10, 2006 6:11 PM

#### P.S. Dont forget to let them know that any thing that is sent is from a FOB. They know us and they love us. When I signed in there, Earlene the director, took the board and wrote Barbaro next to my name. Jen

Katie and others--You can ship supplies for the Missouri horses to: Homestead Equine Hospital, 3615 Bassett Road, Pacific, MO 63069. Dawn at the clinic will distribute to all the clinics involved as well as the Humane Society. One of the employees at the clinic also volunteers with Missouri Horse Rescue (who were at the site of the accident) so any donations for them can go there, as well. They are in need of blue tarps and duct tape and can always use ropes.

The Benefit for St. Louis Horse Heroes will be held November 18th to raise money for Humane Society of MO and MO Horse Rescue. I'll provide more details as to the location when I get them. Silent and live auction items would also be appreciated and can be sent to the address above.

THANKS, EVERYONE!

Correct--However, Homestead has staff heading to Longmeadow daily and is ALSO supplying the other clinics with supplies, so for those that have not yet made the trip, they'll be covered, per Dawn at Homestead. Either location is fine for donations, I'm sure.

perPETual good news about Barbaro. Couldn't be happier unless I woke up and found S 1915 had passed.

Speaking of which: Back to womanning the phones.

Reporting on today's calls to some of the targeted Senators.

I found it both amusing and enlightening to note the music played while I was on hold. Senator Frist has a rousing version of "Loosiana Saturday Night," while Senator Ensign treated me to a classical Sousa march. Just an observation.
Back to business.

Sen. Ensign's Aide, Scott, told me that while there was only "a chance" that the slaughter-ban bill would come out of Committee and onto the floor for a vote before the first of the year, he also said something I hadn't heard "officially" before that gives me greater hope.

He said the reason it was still in Committee, is they are debating WHICH VERSION to send out - i.e., whether to send out the HR 503 version or a slightly different version, apparently S 1915. (?)

That gives me greater hope - that they are debating WHICH ONE to send out, not WHETHER to send ANYTHING out for a vote.

Sen. Ensign's aide, Scott, Sen. Frist's aide, Steve Klein, and Sen. Stevens' aide, Nicki, all said, just keep calling. They all suggested continuing to call uncommitted Senators to cosponsor. They said they are all recording numbers of calls and paying attention to the "live" people.

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH.

Senator Stevens' aide just now transferred me to the Commerce Committee line. When I asked the Commerce Committee aide whether he knew what is happening with S. 1915/H.R. 503, he said that both bills "are a possibility" as being considered by the Senate after the recess, but they will know more after the election, as to whether either bill will be considered.

He mentioned that Sen. Stevens is a co-sponsor, and he also mentioned that "Senator Inouye, who is the Co-Chair of the committee, is also a co-sponsor", and then he mentioned several other co-sponsors on the committee. He said a number of citizens had been calling.

Maybe we should be calling Senator Inouye, too. If they are co-chairs, they probably have to consult on the agenda for the remainder of the term. It would be good if they are both getting calls, I think.

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at October 10, 2006 7:29 PM

In my zeal to report my Senator-calling observations, I failed to comment earlier on the best news of the day. What really thrilled me about today's post-cast-change Barbaro report, was to hear that shortly after his pool recovery, he was out there grazing in the grass. What a good boy! Jen......

Cotton or poly? I know with my dog I prefer cotton or leather.

Posted by: SusanO in MI at October 10, 2006 7:32 PM

##### Susan O
My preference would be the bolt snap. Since many of these horses aren't really broke to lead, a nice cotton rope with an "easy to snap" hook will be much easier on their handlers. Poly burns like crazy if a horse pulls back and it runs through your hands. I speak from experience!

The clinics and Longmeadow still need lots of gauze, cohesive wrap (like Coflex or Vetrap) and 1 lb. cotton bandage rolls, since they are having to re-bandage those injured legs daily.

Send your prayers for Darlin'. She has started to founder and may be developing laminitis.

Thanks to all you generous Fans of Barbaro!

Posted by: Dawn in Omaha at October 10, 2006 7:33 PM

Senator Ensign's office confirms that it is up to the Commerce Committee Chair and Co-Chair to set the agenda for debate/vote within the committee. So I do think it would be good for us to be calling the Co-Chair, Senator Inouye, as well as the chair (Sen. Stevens).

ShelleyA, any thoughts on this?

CJ - yes, between the continued excellent pool recoveries for Big B., and then grazing in the grass shortly thereafter, makes us shake our heads in wonderment at this big fella! There must be something in Barbaro's attitude. If I'm not mistaken, Dynaformers' fee just went up $50,000. This seems like proof that Big B. must be special. But I am no expert in such matters.

With all the site problems yesterday, I thought it best to re-post this list. These are the senators that were mentioned in Alex's update as being the "key to our success"

SIX SENATORS TO FOCUS ON

Senator Frist, Majority Leader to get on calendar
202-224-3135 phone
202-228-4637 fax

Senator Stevens,co-sponsor and Committee Chairman
to help move it out of committee
202-224-3004 phone
202-224-2354 fax

Senator Ensign, Sponsor of S1915 and committee member to move it out of committee
202-224-6244 phone
202-224-2193 fax

Senator Landrieu, co-sponsor
202-224-5824 phone
202-224-9735 fax

Senator Reed, co-sponsor
202-224-4642 phone
202-224-4680 fax

Senator McConnell
202-224-2541 phone
202-224-2499 fax

Also, please stay after your own senators. Those that are not on board yet to co-sponsor.

Those that are already co-sponsors to let them know how important this issue is to you as a constituent so they will help move it.

Remember, at this point, most of them know the details. They just tally up the calls at the end of the day. Keep it short, polite and courteous. It's the NUMBER of calls that will make the difference.

Thanks and good luck to us all!!!!

Cathy Potter,

Yes, we might have to start over with the house after the elections but I bet that all the work we've done so far has still pushed this along a lot further than where it was. In other words they have heard from us, that fact is not going away. Also, since the House of Reps. passed it once they will most likely pass it again.

To eliminate slaughter houses in America is a huge undertaking, like moving a mountain so it takes awhile but it will get done. It's the snow ball effect, you can't stop it now!

RE: TEST

Alex your message was incomplete. I will help you.

------------------

This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. The broadcasters of your area in voluntary cooperation with the Federal, State and local authorities have developed this system to keep you informed in the event of an emergency. If this had been an actual emergency, the Attention Signal you just heard would have been followed by official information, news or instructions. This station serves the Fair Hill area. This concludes this test of the Emergency Broadcast System."

Re: Calls to Senator Inouye:

Here is a quote from the Commerce Committee webpage:

"Long-time friends (in fact, they call each other brother) Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Senator Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) are the Commerce Committee Chairman and Co-Chairman, respectively."

For those who missed the previous discussion -- Senator Inouye, Co-Chair of the Commerce Committee, is a co-sponsor of S. 1915; and, he helps Senator Stevens set the agenda for committee debate. So let's call him, in addition to the Big Six (Sen. Stevens is on that list), our own senators, etc.

Senator Inouye's numbers:
202-224-3934 Fax: 202-224-6747

Thanks, Shelley, for your encouragement on this.

Hi all,

Getting here late today...so happy about the new cast change going well. Swimming, grazing, sunbathing, our guy has as close to the spa life as an equine can get :) So well deserved. Bobby, you are amazing, amazing, amazing. God, put some speed into growing that hoof, OK? Bobby has places to go and lovely ladies to see!

re: Burns. I think, but am not sure, that he's one of those mixed up in the Abramoff scandal. He is as bad as they come. Even if he weren't pro-slaughter, he shouldn't be re-elected even dog catcher (yikes, on second thought, especially something animal-related like dog catcher!!!)

Wondering about Daisy, Kylie, and others (my brain is fuzzy on names)? Praying for healing and good results for all.

Did anyone see the CBS Evening News last Friday? (sorry, forgot to mention) They did a piece on rescuing animals from the conflict in Lebanon. Seems like a natural to push them on this issue.

Hocks, please hang in there. Sweet thing, you need so much love and care. Wish I could be there.

I'm off to Keeneland thursday afternoon for the weekend. I have never been to Keeneland, one of the few of the major tracks I have yet to see.

I will be proudly wearing my Barbaro hat and now my bracelet as well.

Very happy to hear the positive report on Barbaro.Guess he's swimming to regain some of his muscle.

Looking foward to Keeneland, it's been totally re-vamped and they say it's the most modern track in North America now..

I'll fill you all in next week.

Hay Barbaro:

Hang in there big guy. I know you want the cast off--so do I. But you know something? That cast is giving you additional support so you don't overdue on the right hind. We don't know want that leg to have trouble. I know its frustrating but you've come so far. You keep doing like you are. This will pass in time. Soon you'll be out grazing on your own with no cast or lead.

This race requires your patience. Long and slow this time. And in the end you will still be the champ because you stayed the course.

I have a ton of things to do now. I'll try to be back later. Barbaro you can do this. And when you get that cast off for the final time--then Dr R will know how to treat those sores.

I wish you lots of happy grazing today. No nippys on the good Dr. though. I know that's no fun, but nippys hurt. How about you do nippys on grass????

Well duties await my attention.

Actually the Keeneland polytrack was scheduled befor Barbaro's injury. Keeneland was always a pretty safe track, but this will ensure even more safety. I've seen horses breakdown like Barbaro did and not make it off their track, but hopefully won't see those sites again.

Mike, try to find out where Lava Man is stabled at Keeneland; he was suppose to ship there today. You can get a pass for the backside and might get to see Lava Man.

FYI
As Chairman of the Committee, Senator Stevens has a direct number for committee issues. Since this is for committee business (he's already a co-sponsor) the best number to use is 202-224-1251

His aide handling this issue, Dan, is VERY nice and helpful. He confirms that they do "tally" up the calls and report back the hot button issues. And that they have gotten many calls on this.

So keep those calls going......we ARE being heard!!

Posted by: Linda H in Denver at October 10, 2006 8:59 PM

This was posted here October 10th and another article saying it had to do with Brabro's injury.

The introduction of Polytrack was supposed to usher in a new chapter in Keeneland history Friday. It ultimately did, but not before a family with roots tracing to the track's 1930's origins was represented by the winner of the first race ever run over the new synthetic surface.

Posted by: chris byers at October 10, 2006 9:02 PM

Another article on the opening of the synthetic track at Keeneland: Barbaro's Injury Gives Synthetic Surface Urgency. It ends:

"We've always been thought of as traditionalists, sometimes for the worse," Nicholson said. "But we're glad we've honored the tradition of giving anything we can back to the horses and the sport. Horses are what we're here for, and we believe this surface is going to go a long way in keeping them safe."

This is a positive sentiment. We are here for the horse, not the business of the horse.

Don't have to be a constituent. This is his committee chaiman number and for all committee business.
Senator Stevens is already a co-sponsor and is a strong supporter of this bill. His office said that there's definitely enough bi partisan support to get it passed. But it has to get out of committee and on the floor for vote for that to happen.

We MUST get it out of committee.

Have a good night Barbaro Nation, time to hoof it on home.

Barbaro, my shining star. This is for you.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
And the dreams that you dreamed of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
Blue birds fly
And the dreams that you dreamed of
Dreams really do come true
Someday I'll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops thats where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
And the dream that you dare to,why, oh why can't I?

Well I see trees of green and
Red roses too,
I'll watch them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

Well I see skies of blue and I see clouds of white
And the brightness of day
I like the dark and I think to myself
What a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people passing by
I see friends shaking hands
Saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying, I...I love you
I hear babies cry and I watch them grow,
They'll learn much more
Than we'll know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

Someday I'll wish upon a star,
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney top that's where you'll find me
Oh, Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
And the dream that you dare to, why, oh why can't I?

Good night I love you. Angles are with you always.

Crazy idea popped into my head, why not pass out fliers at the races asking with the phone numbers of the Senators asking people to call and support the Bill?

Posted by: Socorro at October 10, 2006 9:39 PM

ALL, THIS WAS POSTED ON THE DISCUSSION BOARDS.

Dear Fans of Barbaro,

Hi, I am a reporter with the Daily Pennsylvanian, the University of Pennsylvania's student newspaper. Since the New Bolton Center is connected with our university (and because Barbaro's story is so interesting), I am writing an article for the paper that focuses on the well-wishing Barbaro has received since his injury. Throughout my interviews, people have constantly stressed all of the good things the fans of Barbaro have done in the past few months. I was hoping to talk to some of you, especially to those who have been involved in things such as the surprise birthday for Doctor Richardson, the anti-slaughter bill, the adoption of horses involved in the accident, etc.
If you are interested, please email me at allsportuf@aol.com, title the email "Barbaro," and if you are willing leave me the best number at which to reach you. If you could get back to me as soon as possible that would be really helpful, as I am on a short deadline. Thank you so much for all your help, and I congratulate you on all the wonderful things you have done thus far!

Hi Alex,

Thank you very much, as always, for the daily updates on Barbaro and general news that keeps our interest piqued in racing in general, Fair Hill horses in particular - hope Chappy gets her "license" soon...for the gate that is :o).

Is there any possible chance that Barbaro could still be considered for Horse of the Year? I realize that, like golf, these prizes are based on money earnings for the most part, but if he didn't earn a dime, Barbaro epitomizes what the thoroughbred is all about, why they are bred, why they run, why they are cherished..for the most part. It would seem a shame if he were overlooked.

A little story that I'm sure you all can relate to. We accept pets here at the hotel. Dogs, cats, birds also. No fees!!! Last Friday 3 men checked in with 3 mules! They are doing hiking, etc., using the hotel as a base. The mules are in a pen, lovingly set up. I scrutinized all of it, probably because we are all on alert now to animal issues. I looked at the trailer closely. It was beautiful. Then I went up to the 3 mules. And I found myself doing a nursing assessment on them! Looked at their legs, coats, hooves, and when I was done, I gave one a hug around the neck. I must have closed my eyes, and when I looked up, the 3 men were looking at me. Look at what Barbaro has turned us into! Thank you Big B. (The mules and men will be here another week.)

Prayers and love tonight for Hocks and Darlin, and all of the horses trying to live, despite what people have done to them. God, please be with them.

Margie, Great story, sounds like a book idea "Mules and Men" set in the early west, a mining story perhaps. Have fun with the mules!

I don't know if this is correct, but Senator Ensign's aide told me that the typical route is for a bill to be debated and voted on in commmittee, before Senator Frist would act. (And first Senator Stevens has to schedule S. 1915 for commettee debate.) The aide said there may be extraordinary things that Frist as Senate Majority Leader CAN do, but ordinarily he would not act until after the committee vote. This makes it sound like, right at this moment, the ball is more in Sen. Stevens' court than Sen. Stevens' aide indicated to you. (??) But Senator Ensign's aide did not sound entirely certain about the Senate Majority Leader's powers; so I'm not sure what he said to me was completely accurate.

The mules are beautiful. One white, one very dark brown, and the 3rd is white with small tan spots. I didn't take much notice of the men though! ;)

Margie,
Packing with mules and horses too has become quite popular amongst people wishing to go into the back country without having to carrying everything themselves, especially if the trip is long. I like to go into the wilderness but hate carrying a heavy pack. It would be so nice to have an animal friend willing to help. Bless the mules!

Hi RENEE
I don't mean to intrude but that song you posted to Barbaro, one of my very favorites, SO BEAUTIFUL!! Wish they could play it in Barbaro's stall! Thank you for posting that!

LYN GILBERT:
You have my prayers for AVI! I so love your posts always!

JAKE:
I'm sorry if I missed any earlier posts - DAISY, YOU & YOUR MOM have been in my heart and many prayers through the night and today. Strength for the journey to all of you, and I send the three of you e-hugs. The most important thing no matter what today has brought is that Daisy knows how much you and Mom loved her. Thinking of you, Lou Ann

CAHILL:
Honey are you home yet with Mom where things are more familiar, a hug for you, too!

ZEKE:
I'm sure that tail of yours is really wagging up a storm, please at least try to be good so your healing isn't delayed. A hug for you, too!

Yes, the usual path is for a bill to be discussed in committee. But if the members agree on the bill as is, then it can be released from committee and can be scheduled on the calendar by Frist as Majority Leader. If no one on the committee opposes the bill as is, there is no need for debate. There is support for this bill in the committee and that support is evenly divided between the republicans and democrates.

There are a few ways this could happen and we don't know yet how they are going to do it. Senator Stevens can't do it alone but, as chairman, can have influence.

He also told me that 28 co-sponsors in the senate is a real GOOD number. And it is reasonable to believe that, if it can get to vote, it can pass.

Loved the mule post Margie!! If you have another chance please give them each a hug for me! Wasn't there a movie years back something like "Three Mules for Sister Sarah"? Smile!
Thank you!

For HOCKS & DARLIN, and ALL THE RESCUES: You are so loved and I continue prayers for you round the clock. Please feel the healing and comforting touch of St. Francis, and all the love going your way from FOB.

Barbaro, you are so beautiful.I look at your photo's and see so much more than the picture of a horse.I do not know what it is about you,but my heart just beats a little faster. You are somehow larger than your photo's,your spirit, your personality, they all come pouring out of the photo, into my heart and home. It's like
you are looking right at me.Its like I can read your mind.
Am I losing it here fellow fans of Barbaro,or do you feel it too?
Am I crazy???
Or does this horse have a powerful lure, that just commands attention?
When you look at his photo's,do you feel an air of greatness, like someone powerful have spoken?
Please share your thoughts before the men in white coats come to take me away.
Love you all
Brenda

I hope I explained that okay....it's kind of confusing to follow and there can be so many variances. One of the aides told me he's still learning each day!!!

Posted by: ShelleyA at October 10, 2006 10:36 PM

Brenda - don't panic. I could look at his photos and get lost in those eyes. I have fallen totally in love with Barbaro. He is beautiful, powerful, sexy, childish, goofy, strong, all the things I look for in a man. I never tire at looking at any and all photos of this magnificnet animal. So if the guys with the white jackets come for you - give them my address as well.

Thanks for the complete explanation!

Posted by: Marilyn/CA at October 10, 2006 10:39 PM

It was a good explanation.

It suggests to me that it is good for us to call even the supposedly "lost causes" on the committee, like Burns and Hutchison -- because the more calls they get, the more they will realize that it may hurt them to speak out too strongly against the bill.

Darlin is the one who they suspect had something out of whack in her back right? They were going to have an equine chiro look at her? I hope they can figure out whats wrong. That poor girl, god bless her after all she has been through. I will go light some candles. Please if there is any more updates, someone let us know.

I also read she is at Homestead, Thanks Dawn, that is reassuring.
