    Barbaro Updates: 101

    updates are now here.

Update 820: I hope to have a Barbaro update by about 8 am. Of course I will post if things are otherwise (like yesterday). In the meantime I thought I would highlight a couple of posts from our discssion boards: the first, a note from Stephanie at Miracle Horse Rescue SPONSORING MHR RESCUES, SUPPLIES NEEDED and the second, an update from those of you who have sponsored horses from the MO tragedy List of MO Mommies & Horses.

It is also nice to see New Zealand continues to follow Barbaro's progress: Barbaro healing 'surprisingly well'.

Update 819: I have been a little lax lately in keeping up with the big races. Barclay Tagg is running his recent, and very impressive, maiden winner in the Champagne on saturday: Nobiz Like Shobiz Ready for Close Up in Champagne. If he performs well I guess he is considering the Breeders' Cup. This race is one that is being shown by ESPN. With Showing Up also slated to run at Belmont on saturday (All Eyes on Showing Up in Jamaica) lets hope for a big day for Barclay.

Update 818: Rachel, from Kennett Florist just left this comment (timestamp: 8:51 pm)

Sorry we haven't posted in a few days, it's been busy and we're still a bit short handed. It was a beautiful trip up to NBC today. Looks like we get one more nice day before the cold snap hits. I had a chance to talk to Dr Sweeney when I went up to drop off the big guy's carrots and stud muffins. She said he's doing well. He's really enjoying his time outside to graze and she commented on how remarkable he's doing. Of course we all know he's a remarkable horse, with amazing spirit!

    WE BELIEVE!!

Update 817: Jeannine Edwards just sent this e-mail, which includes a nice anecdote concerning Tom Albertrani and Bernardini as well as a quick preview to ESPNs racing coverage on saturday:

Last weekend at Belmont it was great to witness the breathtaking performance of a champion in the making, Bernardini. In the paddock before the race, Bernardini just stood out... he was like Adonis. He was a man among boys, even though he was competing against older horses. One touching moment was when he paraded around the walking ring of the Belmont paddock, and the large crowd that had assembled started applauding him, as if he were a rock star. It was something to see. Tom Albertrani, his trainer, is truly in awe of the horse. He says each race the colt seems to get stronger, and it just seems to get easier, he does everything effortlessly. I think Tom was nearly in a state of shock after the race. What was cute the day before the race, was Tom brought his wife Fonda (who used to gallop Cigar) and his two daughters Teal and Noelle, to our TV truck. I gave them a tour of our "production unit/control room on wheels" and they loved it. Tom's 13-year-old daughter Teal would like to get into broadcasting one day, so she was truly amazed at the whole setup and how everything comes together. I asked the girls if they missed Dubai, where they were born and raised, and they said, rather melancoly, "Oh yes!!" Let's wish them the best of luck on Nov 4 in the BC Classic! They are wonderfully genuine people who deserve all the success in the world.

This weekend is our last regular show of our summer horse racing series. (ESPN, 4-6pmET) We just have the BC telecast left after this. We have a 2-hour show that features 4 live races, the Queen Elizabeth and First Lady, both for F&M on turf at Keeneland, and the Champagne and Frizette, for 2-year-olds at Belmont. We also have a feature on female turf standout Gorella, and on the latest European runners pointing for BC. We also have planned a feature on the new Polytrack and other changes here at Keeneland, a preview of Todd Pletcher's numerous and talented BC runners (he may set a record for number of starters), taped coverage of the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes from Newmarket Sat morning, as well as various interviews. It's a packed show!

Update 816: Peter just called (1:45 pm) and had just visited Barbaro. Barbaro remains comfortable. He groomed him and changed his bandages. Michael is now on his way over to take him out grazing etc. Its a lovely breezy and sunny afternoon.

I just had a nice conversation with one of Senator Feinstein's aides. I know that the senator is a longtime supporter of this issue, and a co-sponsor; but she is not on the Commerce Committee. Nevertheless, I asked if she would be willing to make S. 1915 a personal priority during the recess. I suggested that she might check with Senator Landrieu to see what she is doing on this, and that perhaps Senator Feinstein might be willing to do something similar. The aide said she would give the senator all of this information today...

    Hi Alex,
I keep trying to pull up the link on the magazine article but it is not working. Is it me or is there something wrong??
Also you never told me who is Chappy???
Is he yours? He is not listed on the right under racehorses.

Alex, thanks for the update! ACN and grazing yet to come. All is well at NBC :)

I just got this email from CT Sen. Lieberman, responding to my request that he support S.1915 (he is a co-sponsor). It's an interesting read on the whole situation, naming Burns as the bad guy in connection with the BLM mess. Sorry it's so long, but a good summary of how convoluted our government is:

"Thank you for contacting me to voice your opinion in support of
    protecting our horse population.

As you may know, in 1971, Congress passed the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burro Act (WHFBA; P.L. 92-195) with the intent of preserving wild horses and burros from slaughter and various other abusive practices. It set forth provisions for the Department of Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to implement rules for transporting horses and for horse
processing plants and to set aside federal lands for horses and burros to roam without threat.

I believe that BLM should do everything in its power to support and provide the necessary resources to protect and diversify the wild horse population. Additionally, BLM should follow the guidelines set forth in WHFBA in order to safeguard our horses while simultaneously protecting our land and natural resources.

In an eleventh hour maneuver, Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT) attached a rider to the 2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill allowing BLM to sell wild horses that are ten years or older for slaughter after three unsuccessful adoption attempts. Unfortunately, this provision was added without
debate and without going through the normal legislative process. I am disheartened that this action was taken.

Please be assured that I have worked, and will continue to work, with my colleagues in order to reverse this decision. Fortunately, Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) has introduced legislation (S. 576), which would reverse this particular provision and restore the prohibition on commercial sale and slaughter of wild free-roaming horses and burros. I am a cosponsor of this important measure. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Representatives Nick Rahall (D-WV) and Ed Whitfield (R-KY) have also introduced legislation that would permanently reverse this provision (H.R. 297).

The House of Representatives passed legislation introduced by
Representatives Rahall and Whitfield on May 19, 2005, that bans BLM from using any of its $26 million from the fiscal year (FY) 2006 Interior Appropriations bill (H.R. 2361) for selling horses for slaughter from western lands. Similar legislation was not included in the Senate version of the bill; and the language was unfortunately stripped from the final version of H.R. 2361, which the President signed on August 2, 2005 (P.L. 109-54).

During debate on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's FY 2006
Appropriations bill (H.R. 2744), the House passed an amendment on June 8, 2005, introduced by Representatives John Sweeney (R-NY) and John Spratt (D-SC), which prohibits funds from being used to pay for the inspection of horses under the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA).

On September 20, 2005, Senators John Ensign (R-NV) and Robert Byrd introduced an identical amendment to H.R. 2744 in the Senate (S.Amdt. 1753), which I supported. That amendment was reported out of a House-Senate conference committee and was passed by both chambers. The President signed H.R. 2744 into law on November 10, 2005 (P.L. 109-97). This legislation is only effective for FY 2006.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) now claims that it is required to inspect horses under FMIA since P.L. 109-97 did not ban slaughter outright. It is allowing for fee-for-service inspections at the request of the three existing horse slaughter plants. I strongly believe this interpretation is wrong. Fee-for-service inspections are usually reserved for game animals and those not covered under FMIA.

At the same time, USDA is arguing that they are required to continue the inspections because of requirements under FMIA. It seems as if it is trying to have it both ways. When Congress passed the law, its intent was to discontinue the practice of slaughtering horses for meat for human consumption by refusing the funds required for meat inspection of horses for FY 2006. The Humane Society of the United States, the Fund for Animals, and other animal protections groups filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia. They argued that not only did USDA violate the new law, it violated FMIA by allowing inspections funded through private entities and not by USDA. Unfortunately, the district court rejected the civil action and injunction requested by the animal protection groups.

Due to the recent actions by USDA, I believe it is time for Congress to pass a complete ban on slaughtering horses for human consumption. Representatives Sweeney and Spratt have introduced a measure that would permanently ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption (H.R. 503). The House passed H.R. 503 overwhelmingly on September 7, 2006. The legislation has now been received in the Senate for further action.

In addition, Senator Ensign introduced the Virgie S. Arden American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1915). Like H.R. 503, this legislation prohibits the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses or other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption. I hope you will be pleased to learn
that I am a cosponsor of this bill.

As a lover of horses, please rest assured that I will do all I can to
ensure that not one more American horse is needlessly slaughtered for human consumption.

To keep track of future actions on S. 1915 or H.R.
503, you can go to the "Bill Tracking" service at
    http://lieberman.senate.gov/issues/resources."

Hey Guys...I also thought it would be nice to set the record straight regarding the USA TODAY'S references to Barbaro not looking like he did at the Derby....

I suggest a PR campaign that uses the following...

    BARBARO...HE'S BACK....AND HE'S BADDER THAN EVER

I think the scars, white hair re-growth and various and sundry bandages...along with one heck of a goatee...will go a long way to enhance his new TOUGH GUY image...

Of course, the kitty-kissing photo might have to go...and his penchant for goats is still questionable...and what is the deal with that photo where he looks like he is imitating a camel?

Oh well...we love him just the way he is....goats/goatee/kitties and all...

Alex, I admire the amount of time and effort you have contributed to this web site. If you are ever in Orlando, Florida, I will buy you dinner.
This is an e-mail that I received from our Senator Bill Nelson:

Thank you for recently writing to me regarding S. 1915, the Virgie S. Arden American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2005. I wanted to let you know that I have decided to cosponsor this bill.

As you know, S. 1915 would prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption. It also would prohibit the trade and transport of horseflesh and live horses intended for human consumption. On September 7, 2006, the House passed its version of the bill by a vote of 263 to 146; the Senate version has not yet come up for a vote.

I have cosponsored other legislation to protect our horses, including an amendment to the FY 2006 Agriculture Appropriations bill that prohibits the Department of Agriculture from inspecting any facility that slaughters horses for human consumption, thus effectively stopping any U.S. facility from taking part in such business. That measure was signed into law last year.

I am glad you shared your concerns on this issue with me. Please do not hesitate to contact me again in the future.

Read a heartwarming story today about Barbaro having a new admirer and friend, it seems that the pasture were he is taken out daily to graze, also contains three or four cows that also graze in this pasture . This one swiss cow, named "Mocha", by all reports "Mocha" like us, has fallen under Barbaro's magical spell. Upon seeing, Barbaro coming out to graze, "Mocha" leaves her grazing, comes over to Barbaro, and they muzzles each other, in a warm show of affection, so not only does the "Champ", get, sunshine, fresh air, and fresh grown grass. He gets love and affection from a dolting admirer, life just couldn't be better than this.

For the BNN, This is todays edition of The Matz Report.

It was observed today That the scrubs of Dr Dean were ready for proper burial. I approached the good doc about this and asked him, "What's up with the scroungy scrubs?" He said, "Well, I got to the office this morning and noticed my scrubbs missing. Since they were my only ones I had to pick a pair out of the trash can and put them through the sterilization process. I was hoping that the process would make them look better. However, it did not. I thought it would not matter if no one noticed. Unfortunately the cameraman decided to show up."

I asked, "Did you ever find your original scrubbs?" He said, "Yea, I did. They were in Barbaro's stall. I am going to need a new set of scrubbs."

That ended my interview with the good Doc.

I want to know where you guys are finding the new pictures of Barbaro. Is it on the link to the article the other day? I can get to the article but not to the pictures. I'd love to see them. I look forward every day to see how Barbaro is doing. I got my "Believe in Miracles" t-shirt the other day. I'm waiting for my Barbaro model and I also ordered the Barbaro cap and shirt for the Kentucky Derby win. Can't wait to get them.

Barbaro is an inspiration to all as are Dr. R. and the staff at NBC and the Jacksons and everyone who is involved in his care. I wish more people had the compassion that has been shown for Barbaro. If they did, we wouldn't have to pass a bill to prevent horse slaughter.

Go Bobby and I hope you are enjoying your daily outings to graze and enjoy the fresh air.

FOBs, I don't post here much, but I know you'll understand this more than anybody else I know.

I need your prayers for Mara, the daughter of one of my colleagues. Mara and her father had retired thoroughbreds and both horses were kept at a stable owned by a neighbor. Last night, it seems that some coyotes spooked all of the horses. They charged the wooden fence and broke through. Mara's horse was apparently the first one through and he broke his leg. The vet had to euthanize him before Mara could even get there this morning. The father's horse is still down and although nothing appears to be broken, he's unable to get up. They don't know exactly how long he's been down, but if he can't get up by tonight, the vet is recommending that they put him to sleep as well. The rest of the horses are fine.

I feel awful for those horses, but I feel absolutely terrible for Mara. She loved that horse and they won some local competitions together. Please send some good thoughts her way. I can't even imagine how devastated she must be.

This is BNN, for today's second edition of The Matz Report.

As I was leaving the Good Doc I suddenly realized, What happened to those scrubbs in Barbaro's stall? I went back to ask him and this is what he had to say...

"Well, when I found them in the stall I just left them there and was gonna get a shovel to pick them up. When I got back they were no longer there, so I thought that one of the assistants found them and threw them away. Well, I don't know what happened, but the next thing I know Mr Matz shows up and he is wearing them. I don't know why he wore them or who gave them to him, but they were horrible and the reason Barbaro put his ears back when Michael touched him. I don't think Barbaro recognized him. All of the little snaps were gone so you could not button them up properly. As soon as Michael took them off, they were thrown in the trash."

For those of you looking for the Barbaro stories and pictures...

First look up at the updates section (Alex's section). Look for the Lancaster Farming website. It will take you to this story on Barbaro and has the cow story.

Then go to USAtoday.com and look for a search engine on that site. Put in Barbaro. It should come up with some new pics and story.

It has a flash picture program but I can tell you how to get those pics. Some of them are new.

This is for Windows. If you are using MAC--sorry. I know zip about MAC.

First bring up the picture show. Then you need to open up a photo editing program (like MS Digital Image Suite).

Go back to your picture (but don't close the picture editing program). You want to click on three keys--Ctrl Alt & Print Scr (this might show as PrtScn). Then let go of the three keys and open up that pic editing progam. You need a fresh layout so you can paste a pic on it. Then right click and hit paste.

Basically if you know how to copy and paste this is exactly what you are doing. The only difference is that when someone is using Flash--copy and paste won't work. So you use Ctrl Alt PrtScn and then paste into some kind of photo editing program.

On that Lancaster story you want to enlarge each story to about 140 %. Center the pic because you don't want to lose anything. Then edit out the story and you have the pic's themselves.

I'm sorry if this isn't clear. Please write in if you need help.

    Hi everyone,
Just posted this on the Forum, CJ asked that I post it here too:

I changed my "errand day" from tomorrow to today so I could check the bins and hay for the awesome FOBs! :-)

The 45 gallon trash cans with lids at Wal-Mart (cheapest ones) are $19.87 + tax. I bought one and took it out today along with a new plastic feeder for General and some Senior feed.

I stopped at Shadow Mountain and they told me they weren't able to deliver the hay yesterday because they weren't able to connect with Rob at the right time. So they are just waiting to coordinate a time with him. But the hay is very good alfalfa.

I saw all the new pens built for the coming FOB horses. Rob wasn't there so couldn't get an update from him. I did get to meet Stephanie's very sweet mom who was there feeding Stephanie's exotic birds.

I also got my photo card cleared so I can take more photos next Tuesday when I go out again. :-)

    Hi, Fans of Barbaro!

Mara, you and your father are so heartbroken. My prayers are with you and the horses. I just can't believe it happened.

Prayers to all the MO, MD and IN horses. Maybe this is all happening now to show all the pro-slaughter people that horses (and all living things) need to be treated with love, respect and dignity - and that there are plenty of loving-hearted people who are more than willing to care for these animals - no matter how little or how much they can do. Its all in the intention and action.

For all who are calling/faxing/e-mailing for S. 1915 - no retreat, no surrender. We will not be stopped, we will not be silenced. Period.

It is a beautiful afternoon in Chester County so I know someone took Barbaro out to graze today. Another perfect fall day.

LITF, watch over all the new arrivals at the Rainbow Bridge.

Barbaro, I know you are so happy to be able to go outside...cats and cows...you're making so many new friends. Lucky you...

Must go get ready for yoga. Will be back later to tuck Barbaro in for the night.

    Take care, everybody.

    Healing, Love, Peace,
    Lyn Gilbert

    Hi Rachel,
    Great to hear from you.

Posted by: Renee Antaya at October 12, 2006 8:55 PM

Bernardini is an amazing spectacle, isn't he???

I wish him and his camp continued success. He very well may go on to win horse of the year, or top 3 year old, and that would be fine with me...I will wish him well. He is most deserving.

But Barbaro, well, he has our hearts.

And there is nothing greater than that.

Some very funny stuff up above - This is BNN!

I can't get over Bobby. There he is with his ears back and probably ready to squeal with indignation, and there are Matz and Richardson just grinning like a couple of fools! They've clearly lost their heads.

I can't get over how beautiful he looks in the last photo where he's grazing. His coat is glossy and rich and he looks like he could be grazing in between prep races.

A lot of horses would have given up by now, but there's nothing about him--and never was---that would make anyone think he couldn't make it. Just look at his attitude!

    Hello everyone,

Just a quick update on my "bribe people with donuts" antics of today. Yesterday, I posted that I would bring in fresh, warm, donuts to my office. The plan was that, as I handed them out, I would politely ask that calls be made for the passage of our bill.

I guess the saying that the fastest way to a man's heart (or anyone's) is food is true. It worked. But, I do also work with a bunch of animal lovers, and some horsey folks too, so that helped. I heard calls being made and it was good.

No I meant that I agreed with the changes they listed - I didn't check the deletions tho.
    additions:

    `(1) horses and other equines play a vital role in the collective experience of the United States and deserve protection and compassion;

    `(2) horses and other equines are domestic animals that are used primarily for recreation, pleasure, and sport;

    `(3) unlike cows, pigs, and many other animals, horses and other equines are not raised for the purpose of being slaughtered for human consumption;

What a great week of wall-to-wall Barbaro media coverage...news stories, candid photos, personal anecdotes about the "big boss horse", gossip about new "friends" across the fence. :-) We always knew how special he is and it's terrific that his story is being shared with so many others. I am holding out for him to be the first equine host of SNL; think of the opening monologue he could do, and maybe a little "soft-shoe" with Dr. R?

TV-G is what I get to see sometimes, Turner South gets a feed from that channel maybe once a week or every other week. I do not like the way they present on that channel as much as ESPN. It seems they are mostly about betting. They hardly ever give you info on sires/dams just how much they have won, tell you who they bet on, and some stuff about "pick 4" and "pick 6" I am so not up on betting stuff. It is a complete mystery. It seems quite complicated, not the part about "I wanna bet $5.00" but picking more than one, and in what order---Sheesh!! I am not stupid but feel that way when betting is involved!!

######### Excuuuuse me if inappropriate to post this here, but I cannot post on the Forum. It's ultimately about saving slaughter-bound horses from Shipshewana (the notorious Indiana auction-site) via Indiana Horse Rescue. Can somebody please post this at TWF for me? THANK YOU.

########## More tales from my anecdotage:

The only thing that keeps me from the barn every day (as I was in the beginning with Blackie) is the price of gas. My resources are ridiculously limited lately. My barn is about 27 miles one way (from home to the barn), and I've been keeping it down to about twice a week. Now that the price of gas is down somewhat, it won't be that much more to add the additional 40 miles round trip to the rescue place. It's 20 miles from Blackie's barn. (I especially love being there in the evenings, with no other people around.)

Looking forward to getting involved with the Indiana place. One of our boarders has a friend who volunteers there; I'll have to track her down too.

ANYWAY - [this, to Stephanie, MHR] just wanted to say, since I'm so far away and have no $ to give at the moment, I'll keep rattling others' cages and try to keep the support coming your way. MHR will forever get my entire proceeds from my musical shows - the next one is 10/30 and my guarantee is $20 (down from last 2 shows, $30) plus tip jar. MHR gets it all.

But as the one who impelled Faye to MHR, I would be such a hypocrite if I didn't do what I am now about to tell you:

I have tracked down the Northern Indiana branch of Indiana Horse Rescue and lo and behold it is only 20 miles from where Blackie lives. So, lighting would strike me if I didn't get involved, right? I spoke to Tiffany who runs it; she says it is just her and her husband, with volunteers (SOUND FAMILIAR, haha??) so I need to go first on a weekend and meet the two of them. Colleen and Sam I Am also mentioned on the Big Board that they are going this weekend. I Id'ed myself to Tiffany as a Friend of Barbaro and she knows all about us already. Has received $.

I asked Tiffany if IHR could rescue s-bound horses from Shipshewana if money is raised to buy them, and she says they are limited by space constraints. They already have 25 horses and little room for more. I think the answer is to INCREASE APPROVED FOSTER HOMES in the area. I will look into this possibility - flyers at the feed store and stuff like that. Lots of little barns around here, each one could probably take on one more . . . I asked her about foster homes and I guess people have to approach the organization and get screened.

I think that is the way we need go to to help here in Indiana. We must reach the ma-pa little barn owners to each take one in. (My medium-sized boarding barn is presently at 100% stall capacity, btw - but that always fluctuates.) ANYWAY that will be foremost in my mind when I get involved with IHR-North. Too close to Shipshewana not to do something.

My equine vet (who services the area) has already committed to making donation (in lieu of reduced fee; for tax purposes it's better for him this way) to the rescue org as a way of in effect reducing fees.

THAT's MY STORY AND I'M STICKIN' TO IT - 'CAUSE IT'S DA TROOT'!

Could somebody please post this on the Forum, under the Shipshewana thread? I STILL can't post at the forum.

Hope Peace Love & Music - CJ the craziest catlady (Bladkie's Mother & Pleasure's Aunt) in Hammond IN, f/k/a CJ of T Bar J (Elgin IL)

    ##### FOR ALEX:

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS WONDERFUL ANECDOTAL STORY ABOUT BERNARDINI:

I think Tom was nearly in a state of shock after the race"... "Let's wish them the best of luck on Nov 4 in the BC Classic! They are wonderfully genuine people who deserve all the success in the world."
    ##############################################

I remember, Alex, your comments months ago after you spoke to Tommy Albertrani, trainer of Bernardini, what a truly genuine and nice person he was. Obviously, you're a very good judge of character, judging from Jeaninne's comments which you kindly posted here.

The more I read about Bernardini, the more I like what I learn about him, and I respect Jeannine Edwards and her thoughts and opinions about him as well. It seems as if no one is taking Bernardini for granted, least of whom is Albertrani. From what I read here, he is truly amazed and in complete admiration of everything that Bernardini stands for as a racing champion. I wish all of them the best of luck on November 4th and look forward to seeing them in the Winner's Circle of the BC Classic!

Thank you also, Alex, for gently 'reminding' us what this site is all about ... Tim Woolley Racing, which encompasses all TB racing, their owners, trainers, upcoming races, etc. Needless to say, personally speaking, the most important 'category' for me is "BARBARO" and that's what brought me to this site in the first place, but I gratefully acknowledge and realize that "Bobby" is just one 'chapter' or link of many on both the left and ride hand sides of your homepage... and I thank you for all of it!!

    ########################

Dear Jake, I just learned from catching up on comments that Daisy has crossed Rainbow Bridge and her soul is free and soaring. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on your loss and that of your Mom. I know the feeling of losing a beloved pet, so I offer this tribute that I wrote several years ago on the passing of my sister's cat, "Touchdown". Perhaps it will give you some solace, also, in your time of bereavement.

    “Unconditional Love”

I lost my best friend today,
the one who was always there for me
through thick and thin, no matter what
    never questioning or judging
    Just letting me be me

I was more demanding than he ever was
in fact, he asked nothing of me at all
Because he always knew that I loved him
    even when I didn’t express it ...
    He Always knew ...

There were times when I hurt
because he didn’t always kiss me
    when I needed it
or hug me when I asked him to ...

and scolding times, when he did something ‘inappropriate’...
but those emotions were based on my judgment,
    not his.

Still he let it go, because he knew
    I had lessons to learn
and he gladly taught me- unwittingly and lovingly
All I had to do was notice.

    He never doubted me
not half as much as I doubted myself
He always knew I would take care of him
and when he needed my love,
    he came to me naturally
    or just patiently waited
    accepting my flaws and foibles
as only he knew how ... without exception

And now that he is gone, I miss him
I no longer feel his body brushing against mine
his soulful eyes looking into mine
his soft sweet voice purring in my ear ...
    and to my heart

And now I have learned the lesson ... that it is time for me to let go
    and simply accept
God has come to take you to the angels
    My Sweet little Boy ...

    “Touchdown”, My Unconditional Love

I agree with Linnie - it's wonderful to hear about Bernardini. He really is something!

I don't think that takes away one thing from Barbaro. There must have been something in the water four years ago when Barbaro, Bernardini, and Discreet Cat were bred. What incredible horses!

I am thrilled with Bernardini and want to see him win (although I love Lava Man and Invasor too). There's something about watching a potentially great horse. I was able to see Secretariat win the Belmont and I will never forget it. I think people want to see perfection, or whatever comes closest to it.

Barbaro versus Bernardini - I don't have the imagination to see it. What a race that would be!

But a thoroughbred at its essence is stamina and class, and nothing in this world - certainly no race - will show class and stamina as Barbaro has done in this race for his life. A ten percent chance of living? That was the prognosis when he developed laminitis. Did it stop him? NOT FOR A MINUTE! For this incredible horse to be so feisty, for him to be so sensible, for him to be so optimistic, for him to bull his way through every hole and strain to the front, for him to love life, attack life (not to mention attacking his trainer, in a genteel way, of course), this is what they have been breeding for for centuries.

I have no doubt he'll go to stud. Try to keep him from it!!!!

Because Barbaro is so great, I am not jealous of Bernardini. Bernardini is burning up the tracks, and doing it with class and flawless beauty. His runs are both devastating and effortless. And I rejoice in seeing a horse like this.

Because Barbaro is great, we don't have to worry about competition. There isn't any, not really. Just two wonderful horses who happen to live at the same time.

Cheers to you, Barbaro. You are truly a Great One.

    FOR DAVID LETELL:

I thoroughly enjoyed this post from you:

    JAKE ...

My sister is a HUGE FOOTBALL FAN OF THE Miami Dolphins; hence, the name "Touchdown". She loved him so much and there was a time when he was very close to leaving her and she spent one thousand dollars for some special kind of treatment to prolong his life, and it did for several more years, so to her, it was the absolute right decision to make. But then his time had come and after she grieved for "TD", as she lovingly called him, she went to PetSmart to adopt one of their feline furries. She had no idea which or what kind she wanted ... and none of them was 'connecting with her' ... until she saw a name on the cage door ..."ELVIS", and that was IT for her because she has had a lifelong "love affair" with the HUMAN Elvis. When they took little "Elvis" out of his cage, they bonded instantly so she knew it was the right choice and there were so many characteristics about him that reminded her of "TD".

Now, about 5 years later, she and "Elvis" are inseparable. He is an incredible "human/cat" if that's possible, and she couldn't love him more ... even though she still has many beautiful memories and tributes of "Touchdown" all around her home.

Ironically (or not)because I truly believe that God gives us exactly what we need even before we ask for it ... but 6 years ago my sister was considering taking a Red Smoke Persian with gorgeous copper fur and eyes to match from a friend and I was taking the ride with her to look at him. For some reason, "Mr. Pickles" (his name at the time) gravitated toward me instead, but I had no thought of taking another cat because I had a very lovable Brown/Black Tabby Persian named "Taki" in my life. Well, for some reason, I was very drawn to this little Copper Gold Persian kitten and all the way home in the car, he slept in my lap and felt very comfortable with me, and I was a "goner!"

My sister was "on the fence" about taking this cat in the first place, but as soon as I said that I wanted him she wanted to claim him for her own. We 'bantered' back and forth a bit but I wasn't going to get into an argument with her, or worse, over this, so I said that if she wanted him, she could have him. Reluctantly, she relinquished him to me, and now I have two persian sons.

But here's where the Universe knew in advance what I needed ... just about a month after I brought "Mr. Pickles" home, my "Taki" starting showing signs of illness. I took him to the Vet and he was suffering from a very common, but fatal, male feline malady, renal failure. Several tests were run and there was really no hope and I didn't want to prolong his life if it wasn't a quality one for him, so I had to let him go, and I did. But, God and the Universe, in it's wonderful benevolence, already had given me a beautiful 'soul' to take Taki's place even before I knew this was going to happen.

I renamed "Mr. Pickles" and called him "Luke" because the meaning of "Luke" is "Bringer of Light" and that is exactly how I felt about him ... my little bringer of light into my life. I was able to grieve and heal from Taki's passing and focus all of my love and attention on Luke ... and he is still, six years after the fact, my "bringer of light."

Sorry to go on so long here, Jake, but all of these memories just came up and I needed to revisit them again through you and Daisy. Thank you.

Linnie, I just saw your other post.

LINNIE-I come back on to laugh some more at Aunt Sally's malady/affliction(LOL) and get to see this magnificently sad, but sweet poem you wrote for your sister. It really is making me cry AGAIN! I will be back later. My eyes are stinging again, dangnabbit!
    I mean RABBIT

Posted by: Dora J Crow / Montgomery, Alabama at October 12, 2006 11:59 PM

We are so lucky to have them, Linnie. So lucky. The privilege is all ours. Things seem to happen for a reason, like Luke, the bringer of life.

Re. your sister going the extra mile:

I cringe at the bill, which my mom and I are splitting, but the thing is, we wish it had been a LOT more. We wish there had been a humongous bill, if only there had been something that could have been done to prolong Daisy's life, as long as it was quality life. The poor vet felt the same way.

What else is a credit card for? What other thing is there that is as wonderful as a sweet soul you love, who will never be duplicated? A car? A wide screen TV?

The Jacksons know this. If Barbaro is just a horse, they'll be happy.

I'm still betting on him being a stud, though.

I love your description of your beautiful kitties, Linnie. Gorgeous colors!

I meant to say Luke, the bringer of light. But he's done both.

Just saw where you and your mother Lost Daisy, I just want to add my sympathys to you and your mom. Times like this there are just no "right" words but just wanted you to know that in time, the sorrow heals and you will be left with so many precious and great memories of your cat.

Sharing your pain and thoughts are a great thing to do, as you find some great comfort in reaching out to others. Those help you heal.

I went to the virtual animal bridge and lit a permanant candle for Daisy. She joins my recent last (this spring) loss Logan, my daughter and mine beloved sheltie how suffered so much in his last 2 months of life but is now happy and playing with those that went before him, esp his beloved Stormy (another sheltie who died 3 yrs ago from heart disease)

Bless you and know my thoughts and prayes are with you, as I know too well the sorrow of losing a pet (or human) that you so loved..

    It is so hard!

    How are you feeling?

Posted by: J. Carson Black at October 13, 2006 12:05 AM

    JAKE ...

THIS, FROM YOU, SAYS IT ALL:

Because Barbaro is so great, I am not jealous of Bernardini. Bernardini is burning up the tracks, and doing it with class and flawless beauty. His runs are both devastating and effortless. And I rejoice in seeing a horse like this.

Because Barbaro is great, we don't have to worry about competition. There isn't any, not really. Just two wonderful horses who happen to live at the same time.

Cheers to you, Barbaro. You are truly a Great One."
    ###############################################

I couldn't agree more ... these are TWO great champions, at one time on a similar path, but fate has given them divergent paths and 'races' to win now .... and lessons to teach and awards to claim ... each is here for something uniquely and equally important but different ... neither is better ... both are equal and destined for greatness in completely different ways. I am proud to acknowledge and accept "what is" right now.

May 20th changed everything for Barbaro, through no fault of Bernardini or anyone else, for that matter. But I truly believe that Bobby knows where his legacy and greatness lie and he has accepted that mantle, that crown, and that gauntlet. He will be remembered for so many different reasons ... an undefeated racing champion, among them, yes, but his overall legacy will have such far-reaching effects in both time, space and glory that it's inconceivable for me, at this point, to grieve about 'what might have been'.

Barbaro is destined for greatness that is all-encompassing, all-knowing, all-teaching, all-accepting, and there is no race horse on the planet that will ever 'beat those odds' on a race track or anywhere else. Let's celebrate and embrace ALL champions ... because each of them is given an assignment from God and the Universe and each accepts it graciously and with the greatest style ... All True Champions do that, so I am so very very proud to be "In the presence of Greatness", wherever that trail leads and whoever is leading it.

That's beautiful, Linnie. I absolutely agree.

Barbaro has accepted the mantle and the gauntlet. Hey! That would be a neat sub title for a book about him: THE MANTLE AND THE GAUNTLET.

You have to wonder if the world has ever seen a horse as brave and noble as this one.

Posted by: J. Carson Black at October 13, 2006 12:15 AM

Mary L., your remarks about your shelties bring me back to my precious boy, Skippy, a sheltie who lived to be nearly 15 years before succumbing to heart disease. I got him when I was in college from a well-meaning friend, but honestly, I really wasn't at a point in my life that I wanted the responsibility of a pet. Despite my misgivings, he crept quickly into my heart. He was an anxiety-ridden dog, terrified of blowing leaves, parked cars, motionless mailboxes and people he didn't know. But what a sweet, sweet dog he was! He was with me when I graduated college, got married, moved out of state and away from my hometown, got divorced, moved back, and then got married again. He was with me when I bought my first house, sold my first house, had my first child, and bought my first brand new car. He absorbed pounds of tears through the ups and downs of my 20s and early 30s. When he left, it was during the most peaceful time (so far) of my life. It was like he knew it was ok for him to leave. I finally felt like I could give back to him what he had given to me through all of those years. Before my husband took him that final day to the vet, I held him close on my lap and thanked him for his selfless love. He looked up at me, and I swear that his eyes told me it was ok to let him go. That it was time for him to be free of his failing body.

Your Daisy is not here physically, but she's here spiritually. Her life had meaning and purpose. I think all of these animals bring to humanity what humans cannot - compassion, endless love, and the support to their moms & dads that they need to move forward in their lives. Where would we be without them?

Hugs to you and your family as you remember Daisy's impact on your life. It surely would not be the same if she hadn't been a part of it.

Posted by: Sheila at October 13, 2006 12:25 AM

I don't know if this will help, everyone grieves in their own way, but when my beloved boys died, my cats Thaddeus and Tyrone (rescues, both of them, lived to be over 17 years old each!), I did have them cremated and I have their ashes each in a separate beautiful urn on my dresser. Also, my husband bought me a little silver vial that I keep a tiny bit of their ashes in and wear around my neck 24-7. I never take it off, and I lost Thad 4 years ago and Ty 2 years ago. I hold the pendant in my hand all of the time and talk to them. They protect me, I swear.

    Linda:

I too was wondering how many hands Barbaro is.
I just read a book, and it said that Man O'War was 16.1 hands, and Secretariat was 16.2 hands.
Both of them were called "Big Red" too.

So Barbaro is as tall as Secretariat was.

I am so thankful that Barbaro had a good day, and got to graze too.

I was so sad to hear about Daisy. There are no words to ease the sadness that you and your mom are going through, so I'll just say I'm sorry. I have had both cats and dogs who lived very long lives, and when I lost them, people remarked on how lucky I was to have had them so long. While this was true, having them for so long only made me love them more. I understand and am very sorry for your loss.

    "dear Alex,
i am again, struck by the clever and kind inclusion of barbaro food for us.
.the articles are absolutely redemptive and wonder material..like the sun rises ofver hawaii.
.the islands, floating like open pedaled flowers--serence yet turbulent..volcanos simmering..
..in the middle of deep pacific currents..
wow. if anyone is tired and disocouraged by cruel, heavy handedness of people in power..whether in marbled halls or horse anuctions..
just look at what love has done .THE HISTORY IS ALL THERE AND STILL IN THE MAKING..
.all these incredible people working as a team for one goal..may the great horse of our time,,barbaro ,continue daily to be heartened and nourished by all these higher selves..
i am led to hawaii today,-- where i have danced many times..to audiences that really get it.
.their souls are open and free of clutter.their beautiful rituals are based on grstitude for all of nature;s rhtyms..
there for dearest barbaro and fans of barbaro,
today i want to offer platters of freshly backed pumpkin bread to be served wiht the famous tingly pumpkin soup hawaiians make tinges of cinnamon and butter..
..we might have some sweet muffins crusted with walnuts and cream vanilla icing..to be washed down wiht a tea that harbors on some ancient musky yet ginery scent...
may we toss the birds some seeds and pass the plates of fresh pineapple mangos, papays, and bananas
..chocolate chip cookies heavy with macademia nuts and powdered sugar ..are everywhere for dogggy bags
..maybe the wind ,so full of orchids and magnolias, may cast our senses through the forest leaves, upward ,where daisy now hangs wiht the fog and precisionisin tha blue black sky loaded wiht other stars..twinkling twinkling..tand many others who have done their road here.
i know dearest barbaro,, through looking in your eyes, that you do get weary..but simply know how we love you and how we will work to support all the wonderful people working day and night --dr dean...NBC--etc...toease your every unspoken and spoken nipping velvet nose --worries..
once again, yesterday, in my city, as i left juilliard, there was chaos but this time i ran like a little meerkat and made it out of the city to my home on the island ,in two hours..by the time th efire was out, i was safe i n my town... unfortunaley, the smells of buyning buildings and screams of runninng people, brought me back to flashbacks of that day.
i resolved to clean the house from top to bottom and then look at my barbaro shrine and scrapebook among other treasures ,to see where i am now..the past is anohter country i have left.
the books are full of beautiful pictures..gleaned from trips to other lands.
.how grateful i am for having the opportunity to say thank you
just wish i had more green stuff so i could buy a few more horses and take care of anyone else in our extended family.in nned...
in the light and in the dark..may your day dearest barbaro,
    be easefull.
.may you be surrounded in ligtht and strength and hope ..
    all to all
i wear all of you. like garlands that surround my arms and ankles...i carry you all about me like a beautiful necklace..

Down the line, mom will have another cat. We share our cats (she has her own apartment, but there's a catdoor to her place) and the two tabbies spend most of their time with mom anyway. She's just more popular! So we're down from four (perfect!) to three.

Pet Smart's just down the street. When it's time, and we've done our grieving, we owe it to ourselves and to some lost pet to do it again!

Oh, both sheltie stories had me in tears.

I am praying for Felix. Steve has a lost kitty? I missed that.

Second Barbara in AZ - if you ever want a great vet, go to Dr. Tim Ireland. Even if he can be a bit of crybaby (just kidding!). For those who don't know, he was crying, sniffling, and hiccuping with my mom and me.

He is also the vet for the Hermitage Cat Shelter cats, a no-kill shelter. Both Dr. Tim and his staff are wonderful, every one of them. The gentlest hands you will ever see, on all of them. They'd make great horsemen and women.

Wow, I swear I went to high school with an Ireland (yes, in Tucson) but I think it was Joel and I believe he's a politician of some sort in these parts...

But thanks for the tip, my kitties, being relatively young and imprisoned inside, haven't needed much. Could see that changing though as the older one won't stop EATING. She's umm, pleasantly plump, but got a feeling that could be a problem down the line..

Sorry to hear about your girl, I dread that day as the cats I have are the only cats my younger son (16) has known, will be a strong grieving process for him, he's very attached to them as well.

Hope the suggestions helped Nancy, I was frustrated too!

Gonna have to run tho, teenager on way...

Hiya, Bobbey! You are an amazing horse in ever so many ways. But your curiousity about Mocha the Cow and the goats is really something, sweet prince! I said to Brent just last night, "I'd love to buy a pet goat for Barbaro when he gets discharged from the NBC." (As if Brent doesn't already think I am CRAZY about you!) I told Brent about the lovely photo of Precisionist with his mule, Mary Margaret. It'll be so nice when you can have a companion. May you have Mocha-filled dreams tonight. Tomorrow is Friday and that signals the close of another "work week of healing". Hugs, pets, & "scratches" from your pals in CT - Robyn, Brent, & Nikita

This morning he had relaxed his hurt leg enough to touch his toes to the floor, though he was trying not to put weight on it. Now he is standing and walking four square, though still putting less weight on that leg and foot and still limping. He is ambulating much better and his eyes look better.

We think he may have fallen. He is obsessed with sinks and would sit in them all day if I let him (actually I have no idea what he does all day while I'm at work). He might have falling jumping up to or down from a counter. Or he may have tendon or muscle injury, or arthritis, or a tumor. We don't know yet, but he is better today! He is resting and doing what he needs to do. Animals are so much smarter about this kind of thing than humans.

Please just let me say this....It finally hit me why I get upset when I read anything about Bernardini.

Yesterday when I saw the cover story about Barbaro I almost burst into tears as I stood by the cashier. Why? I felt he deserved the attention because he has had to endure so much. I feel so bad that he has had to go through all of this. Then when I saw the post tonight from Jeannine I thought, they should be applauding for Barbaro at the race track..a healthy Barbaro. Yes, Bernardini has done no wrong and I wish him no ill will. However, Barbaro hasn't done anything wrong either and the journey he has to take is so much longer and riskier. It just doesn't seem fair.

I like to think that Barbaro left racing to those who still had something to prove. I have never seen anything as beautiful as Barbaro's Derby run since Secretariat's Belmont. Yes, he is now on to another life, but lets never forget the only reason we came here in the first place is because he was an AMAZING athlete.

    Good Evening Ya'll,

Just stopped by to see what was going on. Been lurking for too long. So glad to see names of the old gang still here.

    Jake,

I hope you are feeling better today. Take it day by day.

    Dora J,

Saw your posts earlier about physical therapy. Don't stop going. It will hurt sometimes, but let the therapist know and they can modify the routine. After my car accident I went to therapy 3 times a week for almost 3 months and it helped alot. I couldn't walk across the floor, sit in a chair etc. So like I use to tell Barbaro - Slow and steady my friend. I know being unemployed is hard, but keep your chin up and do the best you can.

It has taken me almost a year to find a job since my accident, but I am working now and having fun. Hope to be back here more often. I have missed so much.

    Dearest Barbaro,

Sorry about not visiting more often. I have watched you recover from this terrible accident and was inspired to try harder and do the same. As before and always - Slow and steady my friend.
    Thank you Barbaro.

Bernardini is amazing. Barbaro is amazing. We can only wonder just how great a race with both of them racing 100% would have been. We'll never know. They are on seperate paths now. I just don't want anyone to forget the kind of racehorse Barbaro was before he was injured. He is such a special horse to me and to millions of others out there like me.

Sorry to break in to the fun with something serious but someone earlier asked about the Shipshewana horse auction and the rescue in Indiana. Here is an article about the rescue. I can't tell you how much I hate to ask for help but if anyone has even a couple of dollars to send, it would be most appreciated by the IndianaHorseRescue. A couple of FOB's (stashi and cjaffee) are going to the Demotte IN location this weekend to help. I may go there but a friend in Cincinnati has two friends interested in adopting and want me to meet them at the south location. Following is an article from September about the deplorable conditions of these poor horses. A couple have now been adopted according to the www.indianahorserescue.com site.

    Rescued Horses' Conditions Improving
Frankfort-based Indiana Horse Rescue saves 28 horses, more to come

    JANIS THORNTON
    Staff writer

A week after seizing another nine horses from a Gibson County farm, Indiana Horse Rescue's Tony Caldwell of Frankfort is still angry.

"I've never seen anything this bad," he said. "We've seen it bad, but not this bad in this concentration."

Under Caldwell's care, the total 28 horses rescued have improved considerably.

The animals had been the property of Richard Stallings, who owns a horse farm in the Princeton area. The conditions the animals endured were deplorable, Caldwell said, causing a multitude of health problems.

Caldwell is giving the horses their proper treatment: hooves scraped, pain medication administered, and clean water, nourishing food and clean stalls provided.

By necessity, six were euthanized by a veterinarian before they left Gibson County, Caldwell said, and one died on its own.

The animals were not just neglected, Caldwell insisted, "They were tortured."

Indiana Horse Rescue is a nonprofit equine rescue shelter for abused, neglected and unwanted horses. It is located in rural Clinton County, just beyond Frankfort's west side.

Most of the animals Caldwell transported to Frankfort were crippled, hobbling around on neglected, elongated hooves that curled upwards and knees swollen the size of cantaloupes. Many were starved, their ribs and hip bones protruding through their thin skin. And nearly all were infested with parasites and suffered from infections, he said.

"Some of the stalls were three feet deep in manure and urine," he said. "The smell was noxious."

He also described drinking water he found there for a colt and his mother as a bucket of black, algae-filled sewer sludge.

"I saw one horse clomping around in mud up to its knees," Gibson County Sheriff's Deputy Tim Coomer reported to The Times on Tuesday. "Tony took its pulse rate, and it was in pain."

One mare's feet were so badly deformed, it couldn't stand and was forced to lay in its own waste, Coomer said.

"I think everybody was emotionally distraught," Caldwell said, speaking for the team of rescuers accompanying him at the farm.

To make room for the new arrivals, Caldwell and his wife and partner, Kathryn, moved several of their healthy residents to the Indiana Horse Rescue's other three facilities.

Caldwell estimates the rehabilitation of the Gibson County arrivals could take up to a year, depending on the severity of the animal's condition. But at the end of their treatment, when their health is restored, he said, he expects the horses will go on to normal lives in good homes.

The situation in Princeton first surfaced in January, when a former employee of the Stallings farm contacted the Gibson County Animal Control Service. The informant told Animal Services Coordinator Brenda Foley that Stallings was not disposing of the dead horses in a proper manner. Rather, he was having the carcasses dragged to a nearby woods and abandoned.

"We actually were able to confirm by skeletal remains 10 deceased horses," Foley told The Times Tuesday. "In Indiana, failure to dispose of a carcass in 24 hours is a felony offense."

Stallings, who teaches junior high math, worked out an agreement with the county to clean up his farm, Foley said. But by July, she observed no improvements and called in the state. Again, Stallings agreed to a clean-up plan and then failed to act.

"We felt the horses were deteriorating more in the time we had been working with him," Foley said, "and we weren't going to allow it to continue."

She knew of Tony Caldwell through one of her employees and called him.

Accompanied by the sheriff's deputy, Caldwell inspected Stallings' farm on Sept. 7 and impounded 26 horses. When he returned Sept. 13, he obtained a search warrant from the Gibson County prosecutor. The next day, he rescued another nine.

In a few days, Caldwell will return to Princeton, where he and local authorities will inventory Stallings' farm and assess whether he is meeting the county's latest mandates to hire a veterinarian and to clean up the property. If Stallings hasn't complied, more horses will be seized, Caldwell said.

"At some point, the court will issue a protective order, and we will take them all," he said.

The Stallings horses are bound to place a strain on the nonprofit rescue facility's resources, Caldwell said. However, several area residents have called with inquiries on how they can help, he said.

"We have the structure and the manpower," he said. "Mainly we need financial resources."

Money to purchase food, hay, medicines and supplies is what is needed most, he said.

No charges have yet been filed against Stallings, Coomer said, but the Gibson County prosecutor is studying the case.

The owner may be charged with torture, both Caldwell and Foley reported. Many of the complaints against Stallings fit the state's definition of torture, Foley said.

"It's not that we're out to get the man," she said, "but he has committed these crimes against these animals."

Leg bones from the recently euthanized horses will be analyzed by Purdue University students, Coomer said. The findings could help law enforcement officers determine whether charges should be filed.

Foley stressed that Stallings' acts of cruelty and neglect are not representative of Princeton. The community is appalled, she said.

She also said that because her department is relatively small, dealing primarily in dogs and cats, she was not equipped to handle the welfare of so many horses by herself.

"Thank God for the Indiana Horse Rescue," Foley said. "We are very appreciative of all their help."

Two phone messages left for Richard Stallings by The Times on Tuesday were not returned.

Gibson County is located in the southeastern tip of Indiana about halfway between Vincennes and Evansville.

I am glad, but now scared, cause my family had always thought this was what was going to happen. I cannot cut hair anymore, DO NOT want to manage anymore. I am stuck in a rut. I may try to go to a beauty supply store that only sells to hairstylists, since I know that is easy. BUT OMG-they do not pay anything! I am used to having a wage, and manager pay on top of that. Leslie, I also, like to think it was Bernardini's owner who made the initial donation. Its a very classy thing to do and something I can see the Sheik and Darley Stables doing. Purely speculation and wishful thinking ofcourse.

Mary, We will never see Barbaro romp around the track again and that is a shame, I feel sadness too when I look and think about his career being cut short but Bernardini is giving it all he has right now and thats a pleasure to watch forsure.

OK everyone, I have been laughing my head off for two hours reading today's earlier posts. Many of you could get a second job as a comedian! I have to admit, that pic of Bobby, Michael, and Dr. Dean was one for the ages. I think Bobby was "disturbed" because his "people" were making him look silly in front of the camera!!! But it sure was good to see MM and Dr. R having such a good time with our boy. It's been a long five months........

So Bobby, you have a cow girlfriend? I'll just bet Mocha is beautiful! However, I would love for you to meet my Kammy. She's a bit older than you, 8 years, but she's very beautiful - a black and white pinto thoroughbred/warmblood cross - quite a flashy looker. I wish, down the road, that she could get to know you better, if you know what I mean?!?

I guess our Dr. R is quite a unique individual! He's been an actor, is a bird photographer, an excellent cook, a scratch golfer(?) , an accomplished equestrian, loves all sports, is Barbaro's hotwalker, the greatest equine surgeon on the planet, a husband and father, of course, and now a dancer?!? Well, aren't we well-rounded! Does the man ever sleep?

Sweet dreams, Mr. Bobby J. You are absolutely the most special boy, you Boss Horse! Love you always! Nite Nite!

I am another one who idly speculated that perhaps Bernardini's Sheik made the large anonymous donation. If anyone who loves horses as he apparently does, with the financial wherewithal he has, it would not be surprising...

What a fascinating ride this has been. Thank you to all, especially for the efforts on behalf of all forsaken and abandoned animals. I could not get the Indiana and Missouri horses out of my mind today, along with the wild mustangs Senator Burns is willing to slaughter, in comparison to one horse, our incredible Barbaro, who in one minute changes the world for all of them. Would that all the other horses had such loving care and attention as Barbaro, but he IS making a difference for them. That spirited eye, that compelling gaze...

I am honored to honor him.

DesignGirl; LOL. I am not depressed really. I was shooting for at least 97% in each of my classes because for some reason, to me, that's better than a 94% or 95%, so I am happy. Oh believe me, my typing skills have gone through the roof since I have been in here and in the chat room!!!

Pamela, I bet I just missed you then. YOu probably came on when my battery got too low and I had to shut down.

Shelley LOL! That's it!!! You guys helped me through it!!!

Dora, I could not deal with the smell either. I nearly threw up with the ninhydrin, and I was wearing a mask!!! I had lofty expectations growing up too. I should have won 4 KY Derbies by now!!!!

Bonnie LOL It wasn't that hard. Believe me.

Susan E; I humbly accept that post!!!! I will examine everything that needs examined. (I may get into trouble with that one).

Thank you all for your support. I just hope the Secret Service thinks as much of me!!!

Shelley in Ca-My state(AL) Terry Everett is also fond of killing the wild mustangs. I recieved a letter from him several months ago. I do not have a scanner or would upload it for you to read. Pretty much a form letter, stating his position and the reasoning of the government that made up the "culling" the herd rule in the first place. UGH!!

Dora, Think positive thoughts, our words and thoughts are powerful ways we create our reality. Affirm that a good position is coming your way that will be just right for you. Dream, imagine how that would be, what it would look like, how it would feel. Negative thinking pulls us down, down, down. Read uplifting books, be gentle with yourself, things will change. I wish all the best for you! Take care!

BONNIE-You are right! I have an opportunity to do anything I like, within reason. I am an intelligent, well read, animal loving, crazy creature who can do anything she sets her mind on-but am scared. I have only had that same job since I was 17 yrs old! I am 44 now. Scared and scarred to begin again. I am going to try this brave new world, as soon as I can get around like a normal person. (after P.T. makes me INVINCIBLE) YAY! Thanks Bonnie, you are too good to me! I needed that!

Dora, 44 is nothing, this is a transition that maybe some part of you wanted - that's a long time to have the same job, maybe you wanted a change.....? I can understand being scarred. There's a good quote and a book title "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway!"

Lynds-I will email you tmorrow about the gross story.Well maybe it is better off unsaid, oooohhh!

Bonnie-I had tried to quit many times over the 26 years, and DID quit. I always got suckered into going back. My sister (nurse sister-not teacher one) always said she LOVED change. She has to move around in the hospital, do different things to stay fresh, not stagnant. I have always been afraid of change. That kept me from venturing out to a "REAL" job. I had no insurance, no retirement, no nothing, for 26 damn years! All because of my own insecurities that were played upon by the BIG BOSS who pretended to be my best friend. I will know better in the future- no fraternizing with the bosses. I get too close, too emotional, and felt BEHOLDEN to her. I know stupid-wimpy. I am so over that now. I finally got the nerve to confront her 5 mths after I quit. She was so UNAWARE of her trespasses. Anyway-sleep good, forget my nonsense. I am going to check into that book. Thanks friend!

Alex your not lax just the opposite. You've provided so many different articles to read-thanks. I have been reading your updates everyday even though I haven't had time to post. Your descriptions of early morning training are a real treat for this city dweller!

Good Morning Mr. B. As I told your friend Alex, I haven't been ignoring you. Still read your updates every day, and am so happy that you are progressing. Your other friend, Dr. R commented how you know that you are the man of the hour, day - the star! I am but another one of your humble admirers.

Have another enjoyable day and hope to talk to you sometime tomorrow.

Good Morning Alex, Bobby and Barbaro Nation
    TGIF - Right??

What an interesting week. It seems there was a lot of media interest in Barbaro again. For that, we are all grateful, it seems that we just can't read enough about him.

We've made lots of phone calls and faxes this week re: the slaughterhouse legislation - We MUST continue until they close. How many horses don't have the chance our Bobby had - let's help as many as we can through the rescue groups. I know these places will be closed, I just want it to be NOW.
Bless each one of you for all your work.

Stephanie of Miracle Horse Rescue - thank you for all you do and making us mommies and daddies again.

    Re: Anti Slaughterhouse Legislation

I would like to bring up this issue as I think it is so IMPORTANT. I believe one of our biggest problems we have is the fact that the horse is considered "livestock" because of tax purposes for the IRS. I know there are lots of horse owners that post here and also, lots of very bright people who can figure out how the tax laws work. If the horse owners would still get their tax breaks, I'm sure they wouldn't mind re-classifying the status of the horse. If we could fix that issue somehow, I believe we would have 99% of the American people with us.

Are you sleeping in late this AM, past Dr. Dean R's morning rounds, sweet prince? I hope it is sunny for you today and that you have some quality grazing time with Mocha the Cow! Good morning Barbaro, everyday you put a smile on my face, thank you sweet boy. Go out and graze today and stay happy.

Good moring everyone, well the weekend is here and so we have alot of calling to do today. Did anyone see the debate with Santorum and Casey? No wonder Santorum won't commit, he is really running for the races of his life. Although I have called Casey's office and he won't commit either. The news on KDKA this morning said Santorum is one of the top 6 senators. We must get to him.

Prayers to all of our four legged friends.

    Have a great day.
