Barbaro Updates: 103

updates are now here.

Update 841: Another comfortable day for Barbaro. Peter just called (6:30 pm), and had heard from Michael.

Update 840: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (saturday night). I saw Michael Matz in his barn sunday morning, he had heard from Dr. Richardson. He also showed me some print outs he had about Barbaro, this was the most amusing: Indian Charlie: October 14.
update 8:00 am, sunday, october 15

Update 839: The following are the racing media coverage of the major stakes yesterday from Belmont and Keeneland:
Champagne
Daily Racing Form: Scat Daddy gives Pletcher another record
Bloodhorse: Pletcher's Scat Daddy Pops Champagne Cork
ThoroughbredTimes: Pletcher breaks stakes win record with Scat Daddy

Frizette

Bloodhorse: Surprising Sutra Sews Up Frizette
ThoroughbredTimes: Sutra rallies with powerful kick to capture Frizette Stakes

Jamaica
Daily Racing Form: Showing Up finishes fast in Jamaica
Bloodhorse: Showing Up Sparkles in Spirited Jamaica Win
ThoroughbredTimes: Showing Up dominates in Jamaica Handicap

First Lady
Daily Racing Form: Gorella's victory wins BC Mile berth
Bloodhorse: Gorella Holds Off Karen's Caper in First Lady
ThoroughbredTimes: Gorella holds off game Karen's Caper to capture First Lady

QEII
Daily Racing Form: Vacare 4 for 4 after QE II victory
Bloodhorse: Vacare Stays Perfect With QE II Cup Upset
ThoroughbredTimes: Vacare rallies to win Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup

Update 838: A nice article: Barbaro's Journey that includes an interview with Mrs. Jackson. The following is an excerpt:

Cures cropped up from all points across the globe. Barbaro was given a sacred silk cloth that was hung near him in his stall. Someone sent the colt holy water from Lourdes. One sheik involved in racing shipped holy water from the River Jordan.

When the medical staff was changing the bandages on the colt's leg, Jackson knelt down and sprinkled on the holy waters.

"I'm sure they (the staff) probably think I'm a little bit nuts," she said with a laugh.

The massive outpouring of public support and love continues.

One of the times I went over to New Bolton Center with Peter, he was taking over some of the holy water from the River Jordan.

Update 837: Another comfortable day for Barbaro. I spoke to Peter Brette earlier this evening (6:15 pm) who had heard from Michael, who had visited Barbaro.

Update 836: Nice win by Scat Daddy, but sorry, NoBiz Like ShowBiz looks like the one with the future. To me he ran very green, and in "snatches". A nice second. A much better run race than the ridiculous Frizette. Slower early fractions (24 for the first quarter) and thus ultimately a faster time (by more than 3 seconds I think). No disgrace for NoBiz Like ShowBiz.

Update 835: An impressive performance by Gorella. While she only just got up and won, it was a stakes record performance (a minute and 34 and change), and the last eighth of a mile was run in eleven and change.

Update 834: Showing Up took the Jamaica by five lengths. A very professional performance, settling just off the early pace. He started to close around the turn, when he was asked a little he just galloped past the leaders. Congratulations to the Jackson's and Barclay Tagg!

Update 833: The Frizette Stakes, sorry, in my mind it is reflective of everything that is wrong with racing in america. They went waaaaaaay too fast early, and collapsed in a heap. They ran the mile in 1:40 after a first fraction of 22 and change. An aweful race. Congrats to the winner, Sutra.

Update 832: Su McMullen sent us this report from today's key races at Newmarket:

Those fortunate enough to be at Newmarket today weren't disappointed. The clash between Holy Roman Emperor and the unbeaten Teofilo lived up to expectations with one of the most exciting finishes in the history of the Dewhurst Stakes, Europe's top race for two year-olds.

He might have got closer this time, but Teofilo yet again fought off Holy Roman Emperor in a thrilling duel to the line, beating Aiden O'Brien's colt by a head. Commentators were quick to highlight the narrower margin of victory compared to the last time these two met, in the National Stakes at the Curragh, when Teofilo scorched to win by a length and a quarter. But at the end of the day, it's all about winning and on ground that didn't entirely suit either colt,Teofilo found that bit more when challenged by Holy Roman Emperor. These are two extremely good colts, with Teofilo remaining at the top of the betting for next year's 2,000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby. We look forward to seeing these two next year and Teofilo, described by Jim Bolger as the best colt he's ever trained (praise indeed) and mentally like a four-year-old, looks very much like a two-year-old physically so will grow even stronger over the winter.

Champion Stakes - She was the bridesmaid in last year's race when beaten by David Junior and bridesmaid to Rail Link in the Arc just 13 days ago, but this time the rain fell and six-year-old Pride, the oldest winner of the race, took full advantage of her preferred ground and scorched home by three lengths beating Rob Roy with Hurricane Run in third. Pride's victory was all the more impressive coming so soon after the Arc, a very tough race to bounce back from and go on to win at this level. The Hong Kong Cup is being considered as a finale to her career as she won't race next year. Once again, the lack of pace and small field might have accounted for Hurricane Run's defeat but trainer Andre Fabre wasn't making excuses for him or taking anything away from the gallant mare. His next outing is likely to be either the Japan Cup or the Breeders' Cup Turf, but the need for pace will continue to concern Fabre. The long-awaited comeback of Epsom Derby victor Sir Percy proved disappointing for some but perhaps too much was expected as he hasn't run since June and although travelling well he faded on the run in beating only one home. This wasn't a true indication of a horse that won the Derby in very impressive style and it will be interesting to see how he comes out of the race. Rob Roy might stay in training next year as he put up an enouraging performance following some disappointing runs this season.

Update 831: Rachel, from Kennett Florist, just left this note (timestamp: 7:33 pm):

Afternoon Barbaro Family!

All is quiet at NBC, our usual Saturday report. As Alex mentioned we made an early morning run to Fair Hill. We had two big baskets to deliver to Eduardo, thanks to a lovely group that got together to honor him for his love and dedication to Barbaro. One basket was filled with all sorts of Mexican goodies. The other basket included two beautiful pictures of Barbaro, one from Sabina and another gorgeous shot of Eduardo giving B a bath; A beautiful statue of St. Francis, jewlry for Senora Hernandez; the brush with the engraved plaque; the Breyer Barbaro model has not come in yet, but we will bring it down as soon as it comes. I'm sure that he will be very touched. Thank you to everyone involved, you are such an amazing group! Thank you Alex for taking good care of this for us! Have a wonderful weekend!

WE BELIEVE!!

Update 830: Races on ESPN begin at 4pm. The two major races at Newmarket were won by Teofilo (narrowly) and Pride (easily).

We will have a 7 pm (east coast) vigil for Barbaro, and do the same each saturday. There are two things we know currently about Barbaro's condition, he is doing well BUT it remains serious and day-to-day.

Update 829: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (friday night). I saw Michael Matz on my second set when he gave me the news, I was on Chappy. It was a chilly beginning to the morning, but it now looks like a beautiful day. We had three visitors and Kennett Florist also stopped by to drop off two baskets of gifts for Eduardo.

Way to go, Barbaro!!! :-)

Linda H

Many prayers are going out to you.

I've had my own personal experience with this type of situation recently. I found the people of this site to be remarkable in their compassion and caring. While we all may be "strangers", the support of our Barbaro family really helped me get through it. For some reason, I felt it easier to turn to them than others in my "real" life.

No words will make you not worry until Tuesday. Just hope the days pass quickly and you get the best news possible.
Take care of yourself and know that you have many thoughts and prayers going out to you from people who really care.

I hope they find her and others in her situation:

GOOD MORNING BOBBY!
Another Comfortable Night, another ocmfortable morning, another pain free day would be music to our ears. I hope this morning finds you feeling more full of yourself than ever! Day by day "B", day by day. WISCONSIN stands behind their undefeated Champion - HORSE OF THE YEAR!
GO BARBARO GO. You're in our thoughts and prayers 24/7. God Bless and God Speed.

GOOD MORNING ALEX!
Any visitors coming out to Fair Hill today?
It sounds like a beautiful day to showcase Fair Hill. It's beautiful here in sunny WISCONSIN as well thus, gotta get outside before these days are far and few between. Take Care and have a great day!

Posted by: Debra, WI at October 14, 2006 4:18 PM

Linda H. my prayers are so with you for good news.

Mike C., what a thrilling visit with John Henry and his people. How lucky to be able to go to the Ky. Horse Park and see these celebrities.

Lynda, thanks for the articles. Poor Round Pond. I feel for her. I have also known horrendous leg cramps in long distance races, and the pain is pretty unbelievable. I love all the horse racing information people post here. Thanks everyone.

And thanks to Alex for all his painstaking research for us. What a great series of articles on Barbaro and Doc R. this week.

I can't wait to see Bernardini today. I loved Jeannine's comments about him last week. It's almost as if Barbaro's racing spirit has infected Bernardini, and yet he's great in his own right. Barbaro is tops, but what a beautiful rivalry that would have been (sigh).

Thanks for the update. I am heading out right now to FH. Shame it is so late in the day as I would have liked to stop by and say hi!

Thanks for the update Alex. I can start my weekend now, secure in the knowledge that the big guy is starting his day off on the right foot (no pun intended!).

Everyone, have a wonderful weekend. Go Cardinals (hopefully we have no Mets fans here on the board).

Jo; I feel sorry for that poor mare. If it's not one thing it's another!!! I can definitely understand getting scared too after feeling that. She has no idea what happened and all she knows is that she stepped onto the track and she felt pain. Ugh :o(

Dearest Barbaro:

We are always on "pins & needles" until we hear that you have had another good night. I am so thankful to Alex for his dedication to keeping us updated even when he is so very busy. He truly is a great guy.

I have been watching races each Saturday and Sunday (something I never did before I watched
our sweet boy win the Kentucky Derby). My sister always watches the Triple Crown races, and called me to watch the Derby, so I did, and fell in love with Barbaro. She was thinking that Mississippi Cat would win, but she also liked Barbaro too.
We both have been basket cases since the Preakness.

I get confused as to where the race tracks are. I know that Church Hill Downs is in Kentucky, and
Belmont is in New York, but where is Plimico,
Calder, Emerald Downs, and several of the other tracks? They don't always show the state on the screen, nor do the anouncers tell you where the tract is either. I guess they think we all know where they are located. Is there somewhere I could go to find a list of the tracks, and their locations?

Thanks to all,

Barbaro, I am so proud of all the good news and your continued healing. Just love seeing you graze with Dr. Richardson, he looks like a proud father standing there with you.

J. Carson Black,
Thanks but couldn't open video, darn!

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at October 14, 2006 5:08 PM

Jo; No, I don't think so. She may have seen or heard something that got her upset. There was a mare named Sharp Cat that this happened to several years ago. She was going up to the track to workout and the sirens went off, alerting the exercise riders on the track of a loose horse. It upset her so bad she tied up BIG TIME. Her trainer and owner nearly lost her. Her butt muscles were so rigid she could not walk and she was being held up by many people. The vet was giving her IVs and everything.

I checked my stable mail and I see that Michael Matz has Only In Philly running at Laural Park in the 7th race.

Michael is also apparently trying his hand at Steeplechase racing with Amador racing at Morven Park, race number 3. Does anyone know where Morven Park is?

That was one of the most heartwarming, wonderful videos. I thought it sounded like one of Charles Kurault's old "On The Road Again" pieces but see that it wasn't at the end. Is this a regular show somewhere? Thanks--lovely way to start the day (I know--it's noon here, too, but I'm tired and retired) and reminds me of one of the reasons I come to this site so often.

Dear Fans of Barbaro:

Please forgive my memory lapse when I said my sister liked "Mississippi Cat", I meant Blue Grass Cat in the Kentucky Derby. I sometimes wonder where my mind goes when it leaves me.

Sorry.

BONNIE -

The video takes a while to download, it is worth waiting for.

I hope Jennys on the Radio wins or at least has a safe race. Poor baby.

Posted by: Socorro at October 14, 2006 5:26 PM

Lynda...poor Sharp Cat! That really is terrifying that it can happen so quickly. So it's really caused by the sudden tensing up of muscles and is MUCH more serious than the cramps we get. It makes me think of those fainting goats that you have over there, but their muscles relax on their own pretty quickly. Is it just like a one off thing, or is there a risk of it happening again?

I wonder what caused Round Pond to tie up. I'm so glad she's doing better now, and I hope Sharp Cat had no more problems and is living a happy life somewhere now.

First of all, thank you all for sending your good thoughts and prayers and candles my way. Last night I got up and read all the comments and I felt so good afterwards! I was able to sleep and woke up with the "Barbaro Effect" - when life throws you lemons, make lemonade. I will deal with whatever it is and fight if necessary. But, I won't give up, thanks to all the love and hugs from my extended family (FOB) along with my other family.

I plan to print out all the good wishes (like Jake did) and take them with me on Tuesday.

You are all the best!

Barbaro - you will always be an inspiration to us all. You don't give up and neither will I.

Mary - good luck with your MRI today
Skyler - you are in my prayers too

Linnie - I love and appreciate everything you do

A happy Saturday to Barbaro and Alex and Fans of Barbaro!!

Yesterday, thanks to Shelley in CA, I had the most "serendipitous day " and I wanted to share my adventure with you. It all started Thursday night when I got an email from Shelley in CA telling me that one of Harry Aleo and Greg Gilchrist's horses was racing at the Fair in Fresno - right where I live, on Friday afternoon. The following is a copy of my email back to Shelley last night:

Hi Shelley - I just got home from my adventure this afternoon.

Got to the Big Fresno Fair and went to the stable area where you had to have a pass to get in. BUT, I talked to the lady at the gate and told her of my quest - that I was a LITF fan and wanted to find Greg Gilchrist to give him a collage of pictures from Foggy's Memorial. (Richard made up a really cool one all on one 8x11 page which I showed her). And what do you think she did? She actually gave me Greg's cell phone # that they had on file. So I went on into the Fair and to the racing paddock area and watched a race while getting my nerve up to call him.

Finally, I went to a relatively quiet area and called his cell - no answer - so I left a message. I then went on up to the stands and ended up asking a lady from the clubhouse area if she knew how to get ahold of him. She asked if I had a number - I showed her what I had and she said well let's try it again. She did - and he answered. She gave me her phone and I explained everything to him. I am sure Greg thought this must be some crazy lady but he was very nice and told me to meet him by the paddock area after the horses went out on the track.

My husband was not able to get off work today so I tried taking some picture of Vicarino when he came in with Pasqual. I was a little worried as the horses walked around the paddock. Vicarino looked so calm and la-de-da, But he must have just been saving his energy.
(Also got some pictures of Greg G., Harry A. and his wife and Russell B. We'll see when Richard gets home if any of them turned out.)

After the horses got out on the track, I was able to get to Greg and give him the picture collage. I welcomed him to Fresno and he told me that he is actually in Fresno quite a bit.
Also met Harry and his wife and thanked Harry for the sweet note he had written me for the card I had sent him for LITF. Others were around that wanted to speak to them so that was the end to my quick but memorable visit. I wished them luck on today's race (as if they needed if) and told them I had bet on Vicarino TO WIN!

The race was great - Vicarino shot out and took the lead right from the start. He finished in true LITF fashion (by 7 lengths I think - or maybe more - but without the blaze) and set a new track record. The racing fans were going wild!!
Very Cool!!

I tried to get a picture of the finish but have no idea if I got anything. Seemed like everyone kept getting in front of me - but we'll see.

Thank you so much, Shelley, for letting know about the race. I would have never know about it otherwise. And is gave me a second chance to meet the LITF family. (The first time at GGF I chickened out because I was afraid I might too emotional.)

Like I said, I have never been a big fan of racing because of concerns on how the horses were treated. But when I do see them run I dream about what it must be like to be riding one. What a thrill it must be!!!

Well - gotta go and feed my mutts - I'll let you know if any pictures turn out.
Robbie

Final note: A few pictures of Vicarino did come out OK - but not like Richards. If you are interested in viewing them you can click on my name at the bottom which will take you to my husband's Web page. Then go to the LITF heading on the left.

Jo,

Thank you for reminding me of the wonderful clip of Storm Cat - it still gives me goosebumps. (Your post last night 11:09 am).

Sure wish Discreet Cat were going to run in the BC, darn...

Sally in KW - Jennys on Radio is another one of Storm Cat's grandkids... running tomorrow. Did you get to see Fog's bro Vicarino at the Big Fresno Fair?? Hope you saw Robbie's report from the race at the tag end of last night's post! A filly running in the race with Vicarino yesterday is another Storm Cat grandgirl. (She was fourth, but then everybody was left 7 lengths behind by the victorious V...).

I think we need to have a vigil for Bobby today at 7 pm EST. Doesn't seem like we have had an "official", concentrated, all Bobby vigil in a while! Hope all will join.

Jo (UK) -

Sorry, I was a little slow today, besides we didn't have any horse racing on our ESPN. They are showing the French Horse Races and I have refused to see them.

That's funny you wrote to me, because I was thinking about saying "hi" to you since we have not watched the races in a while.

I went back and read the comments from yesterday to find out what was going on with you. My neighbor had a mass in his lung (a smoker) and it turned out to be an infection which was treated with antibiotics. And yes the silly man is still smoking. I wish you all the best on Tuesday. Like (((Bobby))) you will be in my thoughts.

Wow - Robbie, you did good! Those pictures are GREAT. It is really nice to see Harry, Greg, and Russell in that situation before the race, too - seldom do we get that close to the real thing. I love your comment that V is so laid back, la-de-da, that really leaves an interesting picture in the mind... Possibly a product of confident training?

And it's also very sweet to have more pictures of Pasqual, Fog's main man. A man loved by Fog.

That was a day to remember.

MARY S - bless you for continuing your inspiring prayer for The Fog...I am STILL having a hard time believing that he is gone from our sight, but your prayers help me so much!

SHEILA - sorry to disappoint/contradict, but GO, METS! Actually I'm a Yankee fan, but since I live in CT the Mets have always been my National League team!

I hope Eduardo enjoyed his well-deserved gifts, although from what I've read of him he was probably embarrassed!

BIG BOSS HORSE - hope you can get outside on this crispy fall day...then enjoy your bath, your treats, and maybe a massage...WHAT A LIFE! You deserve it and much more for what you have accomplished and inspired in the lives of so many people. We all adore you!

Pat G - thank you for letting me know your neighbor's diagnosis. I am hoping for something like that as my lungs were clear at my last chest x-ray 2 years ago. I quit smoking a little over 10 years ago.

and thank you for your kind thoughts

Shelley...it gives me goosebumps too. He's an amazing animal, and he knows it!

There was an interview with Saeed bin Suroor on tv, and they were asking him about the Breeders' Cup, and it seems a sure thing that we'll see Discreet Cat on 25th November, and he mentioned Ashkal Way, Librettist and Echo of Light (I love this horse!) He is such a cool guy!

Socorro...I know that I neglect my friends during the week when I'm working, but I haven't forgotten them, and I'm looking forward to our next race meet! :-)

Have to say that I was cheering for Pride today...such a pretty filly, with French Jockey and trainer. She ran a great race and won, beating Hurricane Run, Sir Percy and Rob Roy.

Teofilo and Holy Roman Emperor ran a fantastic race! :-)

Words cannot tell you how I feel for you. My husband went through this, so I know the waiting is torture. He loved movies, so we went to lots of movies in those several days, just for distraction.

Wish I were there to take you to the movies. You are in my prayers for a positive diagnosis and I will hold you close in the meantime.

You have all of us.

Haven't had a chance to read all posts yet, but thank you Kennett Florists, whoever delivered the baskets for Eduardo. He's so special to us all and so are you all. Are you ladies hiring by any chance :)

Love and prayers to all, LindaH, I'm here in the 'hood for ya

Linda H, that's a great idea, taking everyone's well wishes with you. I'll be thinking of you, especially on Tuesday, and praying for the best possible outcome.

I don't know how it's possible to take your mind off it, but Shelley in CA has a point. Movies. Or something that makes you think about something else? The little girl nextdoor lost her aunt in a car accident, and she came to me for jigsaw puzzles. When she was working on the puzzle, it engaged her mind and she got a rest from thinking about her aunt.

In the aftermath of losing Daisy, my mom plays piano. While she's playing piano, she can't think of anything else.

We're all with you. Remember that!

Good afternoon, Champ:
How's the "Big Boss Horse?" Feisty? Good! But listen to Dr. R & staff. They are the real bosses! Fans Of Barbaro! American Airlines ships the (slaughtered) horse meat overseas. Contact them with a simple phone call. FEDEX ships "fresh meat" overseas. Contact them! And FEDEX and Kinkos are joined! Please join in boycotting them as well. Here's what I have told those I contacted: "I am a proud member of a nationwide group, "Fans Of BArbaro!" We have become the voice for those who cannot speak. We are asking that you take a look at your current business practice and make the right decision based on public sentiment!" I did this in a professional, non-threatening manner.

DEAR FANS OF BARBARO,
this is an update on the cruel happenings of ROMEO AND HIS TERRIBLE DEATH AND SOME WONDERFUL SOLUTIONS FOR THE KIDS WHO DEPEND ON THE FEDERATION OF BLACK COIWBOYS,..to give them hope and purpose in a world they try to axhist of violence and cruelty.
THE DERATION OF BLACK COWBOYS
83-11 SOUTH CONDUIT AVENUE,
HOWARD BEACH, NEW YORK,11414---
to the attention of CLARENCE CLEMENS .
now, it took a week to find out the truth. the truth=
javit was riding romeo on last sunday wiht his pals marquise et all, he was trainng romeo to spare his life from the slaughter house.
'two months ago, there were three horse that were abandned for a couple of days because their owner was MURDERED-. romeo =was one of them-- the aspca steppend in and THE Feferation took them in..placing two of them and keeping romeo. 'the owner was murdered in an attempt to steal the three horses so they could be sold to the shaughter house
people will do anything fpr money and are always sharking around.
javit, a good and devoted rider, was determined to save this adoptee. so you see what a crule end romeo met. when the taxi got too close and spooked him and he tried to jump over and gouged himself on the cab light and wiht his entrails all over the place, marquise was able to capture him and lay him down and craddle his head till the end.
i will never forget the visual of him and his glowig angel face saying how he loved jhorses and his pant legs were concered in blood romeo's blood.
now clemens is the mentor of marquise. and he and his twin brother obviously have a story which the bbc has filmed . I DO NOT WANT TO LET THESE CHILDREN DOWN WE CARE. I CARE.THEY DESERVE BETTER BEING POOR IS NOT A REASON NOT TO HAVE ENOUGH AND EVEN THE BEST.IN MY COUNRTY..IN THE SHADOWS IT IS LIKE WORSE THEN A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY AS ECONIMISTS SAY HERE..
. i intend to contact our mayor for an award and fuinds tfor the fereation ..they are paying out of thioer own pockets to keep the porgram and stables open..
so the lad and javit and also charles gibson for person of the week abc. o.
thirteen year old marwuise is my hero-trying to ocmfort a horse that had already been orphaned in a veyr criuel way..
. and god only knows the lives they lead..i do know as i have been in the trecnhes since 1983..i go everywhere to dance and teach through arts connection and let me tell you it is unbelievable the talent floating in the worst parts iof our urban landscapes..
that is a disgrace in our counrty.
i cant do it alone. i wont let these children loose their riding and beloved horses that whihc keeps them loving and being human in the best sense of the word. . what they need =cards of love an support from all of you..and donnations of any green kind for the maintenance of the stable ..that is the first order of business in honor of romeo..can you imagine a worse fate?>. to loose so much and the silence thst follows?.
any check to be made out to the feration of black cowboys.
i will never abandon these children and i wont abandon the horses they are tyring to feed and keep through our cold wnter..can you imaigne if they got roses what they would do???i knew i had to research this first. i am now going to get busy about making a benefit from my dance world..somehow..by december ..before thier funds run out,
they need to raise fifteen thousand dollars. so here goes..i believe marquise would be thrilled to receive love, your prayers and cards and javit is improving in the hospital ------------
----------------------------------------------------------------. ..
in the light and in the dark,
martita.....

Hi Everyone, turned into a very wild and crazy week and haven't been able to read all the posts though you always remain in my prayers, two-legs, four-legs, fin or feather, especially those who need a lot of love and special attention right now like the Rescue Horses, Burro's, etc. I just wish I could hug them and help more, hopefully some day.

To think that Dr. Richardson received hate mail or any type of negative comments was completely appalling to me -- when I caught that tidbit I did like some of you said have to go and vent. I've been around enough people to know there are some rotten apples, but to stoop that low . . . well, thank God Dr. Richardson is Dr. Richardson, but it still appalled me.
Dr. Richardson, you have my utmost respect and admiration, along with The Jacksons. God Bless you!

I did manage to catch most of the many really good articles and new pictures this week - wow - and thank you Alex!!!
Except I missed the kitty picture, and Mocha?

I WILL BE WITH ALL OF YOU TONIGHT (Sat.) @ 7PM EST TO VIGIL FOR BOBBY!

A hug and a prayer to any who need them.

Proud to be a FAN OF BARBARO!!

Vigil should be 4 PM here in Arizona. Is it just for Barbaro?

Posted by: Barb AZ at October 14, 2006 7:52 PM

Mary S,

I would love to join you for a Bobby vigil today.

I really appreciated the links I found today. After reading a few of the attachments, I have a better visual picture of the specific areas to focus my prayers.

The articles were pretty clear about Bobby’s needs in his left foot. He needs to grow lots more quality hoof and have the meaty flesh attach its self to the hoof as it grows in. The hoof needs to grown in a proper shape. And the soft tissue needs to heal and remain infection free. The right leg bones needs to continue to strengthen and the curve or bow needs to straighten out. I believe this can all happen thru all of our continued prayers.

Barbaro has come such a long way on our collective prayers. Each morning when I read "ACN" I humbly remember Bobby is where he is because we all have asked on his behalf. There is a promise in the Bible that says "Ask and it shall be given you." Matt.7:7

See you at 7 PM EST

Posted by: Judy Walker in WA at October 14, 2006 7:54 PM

Will stop for a minute at 7 pm and send good wishes for continued healing, strength of spirit and love to our poster boy for equine miracles! He is really amazing and such an inspiration. Same to be said for Dr. Dean. The Philly Enquirer article was so touching about him. I hope he knows he's already forgiven, should anything go wrong on the still-long road to Bobby's recovery. But, it's not gonna!!

I don't think anyone answered your question...sorry. Sometimes people get caught up in just talking to each other here, but they don't mean to ignore anyone.

You have a good point. Those of us who have followed racing for a long time don't think about some of the basic info that a newcomer should have.

If you go to equibase.com, click on Daily Racing Form on the left side, and it will give you a list of tracks currently racing, as well as where they are located. If you click on the box next to them, though, they'll want you to pay $3.50 for a Racing Form for that track's entries ;)

Hope this helps. You are always welcome here, and feel free to ask any question about anything. Plenty of experts here, plus a bunch of us who just guess at things ;)

I wanted to pop in and comment on the SKIDBOOT video that J. Carson posted. I know many have asked in the past about cowboys and how and why they treat their horses they way they do. This Gentleman in this video IS A TRUE COWBOY. If you have ever wondered what one is about, just watch this video. Here is a direct link. Its wonderful. PS, I remember watching SKIDBOOT on Petstar, I love this update, even though I found myself being quite melencholy watching it.

martita,

I too thank you for following the trail of Romeo and the Federation of Black Cowboys to help right this terrible story - another horse potentially bound for slaughter saved, only to bring this plight to an even wider world through his tragic final minutes.

These boys, and I am sure all the kids who come to their stables and knew and loved Romeo, must be devastated. As Cheryl says, we can't imagine what this boy experienced, but he showed a compassion and strength beyond his years that must be honored.

The Federation itself is so deserving for all they do in providing alternatives to kids in the city and to honoring their heritage and place in our history!

There is a really good NPR report on the New York Federation which anyone can access here:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=935664

I, too, wondered if this is the same Clarence Clemens, fantastic sax musician... martita, in any case, perhaps a benefit could include some of the incredible musicans out there who do care and share their talents for good causes?

We should continue to post The Federation's address so cards and (roses?) (studmuffins?) (donations?) can easily be forwarded - in the forum?

As always, martita, your passion is wonderful and may your energy sustain. Would we were closer to watch you perform... the pictures you paint in words must be incredible in your dancing.

Could someone fill me in on what happened to my favorite girl, Round Pond ??

####

Linda H. Hours seem like years while waiting for results. Find comfort in the fact that you have "sisters" here you care about you a great deal and hold you in their thoughts and prayers. Martita writes images as no one else can. I hope her words envelope you in warm feelings that we all hold for you.

####
Martita, Many years ago there was a woman who wrote for Country Living Magazine. Her name was Jo Northrop. She had a gift of being able to relate her magnificent power of observation to others through the magic of words. I used to eagerly look forward to her observations of each month and the unique sensory images her words played upon. Kitchen smells, table settings, walks on the beach with her beloved labs at her side. All these images and she was legally blind. We lost this great observer of life and there is void that cannot be replaced. Her observations were compiled in a little book called Country Matters and it is a permanent fixture on my nightstand. You, Martita, remind me so much of her. You capture moments in time that are so profound to the senses, I get lost in the words you write for a few minutes each day. I'd like to think that Jo Northrup is smiling on you and all the wonderful work you do. Please never stop writing what you observe.

Hi ALL: What a beautiful day today. I visited my stable for the first time today. What amazing creatures they are. I visited my guy Walk, who I don't know if any of you remember was sent to see Dr. R back in August because he kept coming up lame. Anyway, he was diagnosed with a strained/pulled tendon in his foot. Dr. R. said to give him rest and bring him back in the Spring. Well I am happy to report that Walk is no longer lame. His ears are perked, he's very alert and wants out of the barn in the worst way. Unfortunately, right now he only gets out to do grazing. He will be visiting Dr. R again soon for a follow-up MRI then he's off to Florida for the Winter. It was really a great experience I got to feed him cookies as well as the other horses in my stable. Now that I've had my first taste of it, I can't wait to go back.

Glad to hear that Bobby continues to do well. I know in my heart he's going to make it.

Hiya Bobby: Are you being a good boy for everyone. Remember, my friend baby steps lead the way home. You keep up the good work. Love Ya.

Hello Barbaro - hello all

while driving to Cincinnati this morning i scanned the radio for a good station - i heard the name Barbaro & had to stop it there - i am not sure who was taking about Bobby but he was a handicapper for Turfway Park - anyway -he was talking about how he looks at the pedigree of a horse to determine his choices- he said when watched Barbaro on the turf and looked at his sire and dam history he knew Barbaro was going to be a force to recon with - he talked about how upset he was when Barbaro broke down - the interview was over so i missed the begging but it was nice to hear !

well i have to go for now

Lorraine, It's always such great news when a horse comes out of a hard time feeling well again.

I couldn't tell from your post if "Walk" is your horse or just in your stable or if you, yourself, met with Dr. R? In any case I'm glad he's better!

Everyone - Don't forget Barbaro's 7pm Vigil

As Alex said, Barbaro is doing well but it's still day-to-day. His LH hoof must grow much much more, and the hoof wall must attach firmly, free of infection. The RH leg needs to straighten and heal more. He must continue to stand and walk comfortably. Judy's 7:54 PM post explains it best.

Dr. R. needs our prayers too. He must stay persistent, empowered with God's strength, wisdom, knowledge, discernment and healing grace.

Please take some time and pray for them both

With regard to the NPR story on the Black Cowboys, I tried it again and had no luck when I used Google search, but tried it on Yahoo and it went through just fine. That happens to me quite a lot, but I don't know why Google has such little luck for me with those URLs.

Glad you found it through backing and filling, ha ha... One thing I have learned with these computers is to not stop trying.

Sheesh I HATE it when I fall asleep!!!

Rosemary; Round Pond tied-up while she was preparing for her last race, and that is why she was not 100%. When she tied up she got scared of the track, so Mr Matz had to fix that problem. He took her out on trail rides and she got to where she forgot about it I guess. She is fine now.

Hmmm.. Congrats on 2nd for NoBiz and Barclay Tagg. I am sorry, but I had to laugh, NoBiz looked like he was just playing, did anyone else see him checking out Scat Daddy like " Hey? Do I know you?"

Honestly, not to take anything away from the Winner, but I think if Nobiz was to dig in, which I dont think he did, he could of easily taken it.

Shannon, I agree - and for NoBiz's SECOND race, I think that's pretty awesome. Actually it's awesome that he was the favorite at this stage of his career. He's a very handsome guy, too.

I don't understand why they're bringing European horses over to run in these high stakes races on surfaces they don't normally run on - it sure looks like they're uncomfortable (Dylan Thomas and the Scottish horse, last in this race, et al.). Seems like that would be discouraging for both the owners and the horses... hope that doesn't happen to the Lael's George Washington in the Breeder's Cup.

Posted by: Shelley in CA at October 14, 2006 10:32 PM

I loved Scat Daddy - he put it all together today, but I agree that Nobiz has all the talent in the world! Both were very impressive and should go on. I am amazed that Nobiz ran that well in his second race.

I missed Showing Up's win. I'm hoping they might show it on the ESPN show, but they probably won't.

Lynda (and Jake, too) -

Showing Up was in the 8th race at Belmont today. You can see the video by going to the New York Racing Association Belmont Park website, going down the left side to the Broadcast category, picking video. If you don't have a "password", you can get it in about a minute by putting in your info. It's really handy for those of us who have been bitten by this bug.

Don't know what I would do if I had horse racing TV - guess I wouldn't be able to walk dogs, go to work, read, sleep, uh, anything else...!??

Precious Barbaro: Thanks to our Father for another comfortable day. May He also give you a night of healing and rest.
Father, thank you for the "Miracle of Barbaro".

My Angel Horse, Lost in the Fog: Still missing you so much. Thanking our Father for such a magnificent creation in the name of "Lost in the Fog".
Thank you Father, for letting us have Foggy for the time he was with us. I just wish we would have had him a little longer.

Barbaro Team: Praying that you are all having a wonderful day today. I thank our Father everyday for uniting me with so many lovely and caring people. God Bless you and yours.

Update on my Kylie: She is doing alot better. I can never express how much it meant to us that all of my Barbaro Team was praying and lighting candles for my precious grandbaby. She's back to singing her ABC's and also "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star".

GOOD NEWS, GOOD NEWS, GOOD NEWS!!!!!!
I just received my thank you note from Mr. Aleo. He wrote me that he was very impressed with my letter to him over the loss of "Foggy".....HE ALSO SENT ME THE "LOST IN THE FOG" DVD.......I couldn't believe it. I was jumping all over the room with happiness. My dog and cats all ran under the bed. They are probably thinking "I knew this was going to happen. She finally "cracked"...where is the straight jacket"?....I just love Foggy so much and miss him tremendously.

Candles are lit for my boys.......

But I'm not sure he needs it being in NV - it does get cold there in the Winter - so hopefully he can use it. I would suggest medium weights for the younger horses. I could be wrong - Faye is the person to ask - she lives in NV and wworks at MHR when she can.

Sally, Susan,

I know here in AZ, we don't really need the blankets. It probably gets colder there. (We blanket here just for the coat.)

Barbaro- Hope you're having a great Saturday. I saw your buddy Edgar at Keeneland today. I wished him good luck as he was going to the track in race 3. He said "thanks", I'm sure he saw my "Barbaro" hat. I couldn't help but think, "there is the man who saved Barbaro", as his actions gave Dr. Richardson a chance to put you back together again.

It's cool, almost cold, here in Kentucky, hope you're a little warmer than I am.

Love Always and Forever,

Kim

BARB IN AZ, I meant to ask you the other day when you broke the news to us about Chunky, your wayward child. Isn't she a pony who had a fling with a much larger horse? Do we need to be concerned about needing a c-section? I was kinda worried about a difficult birth...

I think it so sweet that you are getting blankets. You are WONDERFUL!

cindy a,

I was actually concerned about that myself, so I called the hot-line to my vet. Yes, it is actually a RED PHONE which connects directly to him! He told me that ponies tend to have pony-size babies, and not to be overly concerned. He then gave me a prescription for some Valium. I was hyper ventilating!

Seriously, if the mare is bred to a larger stallion, the baby will probably mature to be larger than the mare eventually.

Another good thing about ponies is that they are extremely rugged. They rarely have problems in child birth

Brava to Showing Up, and congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, who deserve everything wonderful that happens to them!

BARB AZ - excuse my ignorance, but what is the average weight of a newborn foal?

I think that Barbaro and Gorella should get married. Barbaro is BIG BOSS HORSE and the announcer today referred to Gorella as having ATTITUDE...of course, this might mean they'd have bratty kids! LOL

I like you vet - I thought the Valium were for Miss Chunky - I had to laugh - they were for you!!! You are a funny girl! Hopefully all will go well!!!
