Barbaro Updates: 104

updates are now here.

Update 847: Peter Brette just called, Barbaro remains well. He had heard from Michael who had visited today.

Kennett Florist left this comment (timestamp: 9:17 pm):

Just got back from NBC. We had carrots and treats for Barbaro and the research horses today, to get the week started off right.

I talked to Jennifer at New Bolton. She said that Sabina was going to have surgery this afternoon. She is going to visit her tmorrow, and I will stay in contact with her. I will pass along updates as we get them. Please pray that her recovery goes smoothly.

Also, please, please if you have not done so already, please sign Mike Rea's petition for the Extreme Home Makeover. Now more than ever they need to make this happen and soon! Thank you everyone for all your love and concern for all beings great and small (2 or 4 legged)!!

WE BELIEVE!!

You can send your virtual good wishes to Sabina: Good Wishes for Sabina Pierce's Recovery

Update 846: I see George Washington is now being pointed for the Breeders' Cup Classic: George Washington Definite for BC Classic. I can only think this decision is simply the result of Dylan Thomas' clear dislike for the dirt, and not in the best interests of Georgeous George. I would love to see him win the Classic, but to run against Bernardini, for his first race on the dirt, on a different continent ...

Update 845: I just visited Mike Rea, with Shell (pinkwellies on the discussion board) and Allan. He was in good sprits, even if a little emotional at times. He is slightly frustrated at not seeing his own progress, but there is clear progress. We sat around and chatted for about 45 minutes. He is actually going home this weekend (for good), and will start new therapy on monday at another facility. I think that is a clear signal he is doing well. He is also scheduled to go to the Breeders' Cup as part of being nominated for the White Horse award. As I was leaving his sister, Cathy, arrived. She was talking about all the work Mercy and others are doing for Mike's nomination for the Extreme Home Makeover competition. Very cool. More information is on Mike's blog.

My last set this morning, I took a 2 year old out back for the first time. He refused to cross from some grassland to the road. Not wanting to get too "agressive" I decided to back him onto the road (this usually works quite well). Anyway, as we were backing up he anchored his hind legs, and basically sat down! With few options remaining, I dismounted! It still took me five minutes to coax him onto the road. Once we got going I think he quite enjoyed himself.

Update 844: Sabina Pierce, Barbaro's photographer, had a nasty horse riding accident over the weekend. She damaged her back quite considerably and will undergo surgery today at UPenn's hospital. I spoke with her yesterday, and she seemed in pretty good spirits. She gave me details of which I don't remember other than its not a situation where they are concerned about Sabina being paralyzed. She will be out of hospital before the end of the week, and I plan to visit tomorrow. I just thought I would let everyone know as Sabina has not only done a wonderful job photographing Barbaro during his recovery for everyone to see, but she has also been a contributor to this site. If you want to send wishes, please send them to New Bolton, care of Jennifer Rench.

Update 843: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (sunday night). I saw Michael Matz on my first set, he had heard from Dr. Richardson. While it is another chilly morning at Fair Hill, it was a gorgeous sunrise and looks like it will be a lovely day. So far I have ridden two horses (a Carson City 2yo gelding and Chappy), probably three to four more to go. Nice easy morning for the beginning of the week.
update 7:40 am, monday, october 16

Update 842: The Daily Pennsylvanian has a story about Barbaro and you 'Colt' of personality surrounds star horse. Some really good quotes, the following is an excerpt:

While the Barbaro Maniacs - people of all ages with widely varying levels of experience with horses - initially frequented the Tim Woolley Web site primarily for Barbaro, they have since turned the site into an activist page for horse-related issues. Among their many initiatives: They recently planned and financed a surprise birthday party for a horse trainer named Mike Rea, who incurred severe brain damage in a horse-riding accident, sent gift baskets to a horse - Lost in the Fog - who was battling cancer in California and "adopted" horses that had survived a tragic trailer accident in Missouri and had been bound for a slaughter house.

I asked a(n ex) colleague at Wharton how often the Daily Pennsylvanian comes out (after they interviewed for the story), you wonder why I no longer work at Penn!

Thanks so much for the article Alex - I'm so pleased that our boy is being given credit for the wonderful things that are happening because of the dedication of the "FOB". I don't understand the last sentence in your comment Alex - but hay - it's Monday morning and I need another cup of coffee.

Good morning Barbaro, hope you had a wonderful healing weekend. Go out and graze today and eat a good breakfast. Prayers and love are coming your way sweet boy, stay strong and be happy.

Good moring everyone, well its Monday and the Senators are back to work, so lets go and get them, calling, faxing, and e-mail.

Alex, thank you for posting the artical from Daily Penn.

I took more flyers out to the Meadows Race Track over the weekend, what I took out before were all taken and they called and needed more. After talking to a few people out there, it seems to me that the anti-slaughter issue is well hiden.

Have a great day everyone.

Shelley in CA,

I'm sorry that the story about Joe and the tbfriends.com website upset you. However, I am glad that you were able to post a link w/his journal via a blog since the story is no longer posted on his actual site. Sometimes things like that need to be both posted here and on the discussion board so that everyone gets to see it.

You are right, 4K is nothing to save some horses. Where are the Hollywood folks who could donate those funds and use that as a tax write-off?

Guess it's proposal time to Thoroughbred Charities of America so Joe's ranch can get some funds!!

SB1915 information:

Wanted to share these emails with all the FOB's. I emailed Shiloh Horse Rescue and Sanctuary "a place of peace for horses in need" email address
www.shilohhorserescue.com for anyone who would like to go to their website to check out what they do for horses.
Following are the emails:

10-11-06
Dear Ms. Curtis,
I was wondering where your senators in NV stand on the SB1915 horse slaughter bill. If they are not supporting anti-horse slaughter could we count on you and Mr. Curtis to "nudge" them gently to support it?
Blessings,
D'Anne in NC a Fan of Barbaro

Answer on 10-16-06:

Hi D'Anne,
I am sorry that it took me a while to get back to your email, I have been out of town for this last week and just returned today.
My husband and I have been to Washington, DC on numerous occasions over the last few years to lobby the Senate and Congress to pass the slaughter bill. Our NV Rep Senator, John Ensign is a HUGE supporter, in fact he is the Senator who continues to introduce the bill to the Senate. He is a veterinarian himself, and a huge supporter of the horses.
Senator Reed (NV) is also a supporter. We have had him to our house in Vegas to help to support the slaughter bill.

Thanks for your support for the horses! :o)

FOB's: In case some of you gals and guys are too young to remember (lol)...
Mr. Curtis is the movie star Tony Curtis and I felt that he may have clout in DC....and it appears they both have and have gone the extra mile to promote the passage of SB1915.

So on to my state Senatos again to do some gentle "nudging" myself!!

A woman at work this morning tells me she heard a story on Fox News about a bunch of people who have surfaced hating Barbaro, believing he should have been put down and that too much money is being spent on him, too much attention lavished. Do we have any idea who these stupid sickos are so that we can watch out for them? They sound dangerous to me, as well as small-minded, selfish, and ignorant. Mary Evans

Good morning, Champ!
ACN for the "Big Boss Horse!" Always the best way to start the day! CHALLENGE TO ALL "FANS OF BARBARO!" Senate comes back in a few short weeks. Every "member" call your senators, including the six ones, and don't let up! Get friends & relatives to call. And a big, heartfelt
thank you to T. Boone & Madeleine Pickens. Ten days ago they ran a full page ad in USA Today about "America's Dirty Little Secret!" Mrs. Pickens has her finger on the pulse of this issue. And thank you Bo Derek. She is successfully convincing senators to come on board. And thanks to Eddie Kilroy of XM Radio, travelling the nation campaigning for america's horses. FOB'S, lets do our part. Lets jump on the wave of success created by these people and flood the senators' offices with calls, faxes & e-mails.

P.S. to the above. After grilling my co-worker some more, it appears maybe the story on Fox News is not really news, but rather came of Dr. Richardson's own early experience with hate stuff coming over his phone and Email that we already knew about. I really hope that's the case and none of us gets too alarmed. Mary

Go to the forum under Horse Rescue Issues, to the thread "CA Rescue". This man Joe and his wife sound incredible. The KB comes to him with a trailer FULL of horses and says Joe can save them ALL for $4000. His place had just been burned out by the Woodland fires - all he had left was enough money for 1 - only 1 horse to take off of that trailer. Please read that story.

Those that are already co-sponsors to let them know how important this issue is to you as a constituent so they will help move it.

Remember, at this point, most of them know the details. They just tally up the calls at the end of the day. Keep it short, polite and courteous. It's the NUMBER of calls that will make the difference.

I've always heard that for evey action there is a
reaction, so I suppose this is it for us, the fans of Barbaro.

Perhaps if these nuts rail enough on Barbaro and us,
it will cause another reaction from decent people and that will help us in the anti-slaughter fight. so let them hate on, they can only help us and Barbaro in the long run. At least that is my take on it. But I understand your feelings about them, yuk- I wouldn't want to be associated with one of them ! Probably misanthropes.
We love and try to help, and they can't stand it and just have to try to hurt and bring us down. Let's don't let them !
See ya later, BB

Good Morning Barbaro!!! I am glad it's nicer there than it is here. I am flooded IN!!! We had tornado warnings and evacuations from work and at nearly 8:25 I swam home. There were people stranded on the feeder roads (people trying to get through the rivers forming on the roads). I think the river across the highway was only about 4 inches deep. Anyway I managed to get my car through. I am glad to be home.

Great article, Alex!!! Very well written!

Good morning Boss Barbaro! I hope you have a wonderful day grazing outside and eating treats inside. Enjoy your walk, but don't drag Dr. R, Michael, or Peter, whoever has the pleasure of your company today!

I was just sitting here thinking about everything that has transpired since your heartbreaking injury. So much has been accomplished in the world of horses because of your influence. You may take a bow now, oh precious one. Have a great day. I love you so much!

How can anyone feel negatively toward Barbaro? He means no harm to anyone, and means good things to quite a number of people. He's without any guile or malice. I just don't understand some people.

Posted by: DJo-Ann at October 16, 2006 3:56 PM

I was wondering if Barbaro could get a visit(s) from Messaging or Luke (the pony)?

I think it would be good because of the concern of keeping him motivated. Of course the Jacksons, Michael, and Dr. Richardson knows best.

Keep on keeping on. I love you Boy!

I'm back after 3 days of no power, no heat, and half the trees in Amherst lying broken on streets and lawns. It was SO hard not to know how Barbaro and you all were getting on.

What a relief to find that our champion is still doing what he always does - win.

I missed the horses at my local rescue & sanctuary on Friday and will be speeding out there this afternoon for my hands on fix.

Those comments against the Barbaro Mania almost surely came from the article where Dr R said some people complained that there is too much money and attention given to the story. The killers hate the attention because it exposes them for the horrible people they are,and the Barbaro effect will hopefully lead to their extinction.

Bobby so glad that you continue to heal and remain comfortable. My thoughts and prayers are always with you! I am so proud of the Barbaro Manicas and how they have taken their passion for Barbaro and done something for horses everywhere! This site is the best. Alex thankyou so much for giving us a place to meet and learn. I now watch racing every week, and it is wonderful to know something about the horses running in those races. Have a wonderful day everyone, especially Beautiful Bobby. In the article it was stated that he is special and you can see it in his eyes, that is so right, its there, in his eyes, his determination to live and to win, this race the most important of all. I think he has captivated everyone with those eyes, he is a super horse! Thank you Dr. Richardson and to all the members of his team. I am so grateful for the medical and nursing care that he receives daily!

I think that people may be confused because H.B. 503 passed recently. Generally, people who don't know about how all of this works think that if one chamber of Congress passed a bill, then it must be solidly enacted into law. This confusion makes it difficult to get people aware of the urgency of dealing with S. 1915. Maybe it is something to mention to friends and family who may have been confused about the earlier media reports about H.B 503 -- just say that the House has passed its bill, but the slaughter will continue unless the Senate acts.

That's right, the Bill must be passed by the House, Senate & signed by the President in the same year. If not we start over and then there is no guarantee that it will be reviewed in subsequent session. That's why it's so important to keep pushing the Senators. They may only resume briefly before the Thanksgiving break with no guarantee that they will return before the end of the year.

It's a little easier to collect the messages on the Forum.

On another note, I happened to stumble across an absolutely magnificent photo of "Secretariat" the other day quite by accident ... it is magnificent and everyone I have sent it to has given it rave reviews, so I am sharing the link to this photo for all to see. It was taken c. 1984 when "Big Red" was 14 years old and napping at Claiborne. It's no surprise that this gorgeous photo was taken by the incredible Barbara Livingston who has also taken magnificent photos of Barbaro as well.

But, this one's JUST for "Big Red" enthusiasts ... ENJOY AND REJOICE!!

Oh Alex, I so agree with what you said about Barbaro's uniqueness in today's world. Imagine a horse named Barbaro showing human beings how to be better at who they are!! When I want to throw in the towel after reading of all the human folly, I come here and get a good dose of "Barbaro Will/Strength/Courage, and I'm good to go again. Thanks for posting the article.

Mary E. There will always be a group of people who take the negative side of things, re " Barbaro Haters". Alex addressed that in his quote in the "Daily". Barbaro negates all that negativity, as does Dr. R himself. The good Doc is so secure in who he is and that he is doing the right thing at the moment for Barbaro, that he just doesn't have time to care for the "hate mail". Let's not waste our energy in those "haters", words are wasted on them, rather let's use that energy to continue with the positves, the horse rescues, S1915, Mike's Home makeover, etc. No "hate group" could ever match the forces of FOB's!!!

Posted by: Rosemary in NE OHIO at October 16, 2006 7:41 PM

Beth has updated the Grace Foundation Of North Calf. web-site with pictures of all the new horses she rescued from the Feedlot. She is the one who has our Salvation colt, our poster boy! I know Beth has her plate full with all the new arrivals so I cut and pasted some info for you. I emailed her and ask it she has named any of the horses yet. Will let you know when I hear back from her.

http://www.thegracefoundationofnorcal.org/

then go too.

If you want to read more about this story
please click "HERE"

Nice pictures, none are hurt looking. She will have eight new babies in the spring.

This eclectic group of horses symbolizes the American horses that are being slaughtered today. Eight of the horses that are being rescued are pregnant mares under the age of ten years old. Two are orphaned babies (their mothers were sent to slaughter). A beautiful eight-year old Thoroughbred, that once brought entertainment to racing fans in California, is also part of the group.

Originally, there was only supposed to be sixteen horses, but as the trailer was loading up, the feedlot owner decided to throw in one more - an Arabian gelding that was obviously a victim of starvation. The feedlot owner remarked, "Take this one too, he’s not good for anything but soup bones around here".

Some of these horses will be adopted out to approved homes, while others will live out their lives at The Grace Foundation, working as therapy horses for children with special needs.

I found it up lifting!

Bobbie B.--think you hit on something when you said Barbaro haters are misanthropes. Isn't that what they accuse horse lovers of being? As if you can only love horses or humans, and not both?

Alex--great Pennsylvanian article! I didn't get the last line at first, either ;)

Dear sweet Bobby--every day is a great day when it's been ACN. You continue to inspire and teach us how to be better as humans. I think you should call Frist and tell him that you still have two perfectly good front feet and have been practicing rearing up...just in case the good senator needs a little more convincing ;)

Hello my dear friends :),

I want to express my appreciation to those of you who have asked about me, especially Susan E.

I was having problems reading the very small font of the comments. Just today, I found out how to make the font size larger !!!! (Thanks, Tracie :).

My fiance who was most helpful in driving me into the mountains to the Mother Cabrini Shrine and also created the Mother Cabrini web site for Bobby (it's still there for all of you to see .. if you haven't seen it, check out the Barbaro Fan Media area at the top of this page .. I personally love it.) started wanting more of my time (we are both retired and always together).. I guess that I sort of "over did it" when I was here for many hours on most days. He asked me to greatly limit my time here since he was feeling neglected. That was also when the bickering started here and a myriad of posts and a feeling of it being cliquey (sp??) .. I started to feel left out and hurt since I had been here from "day one". I understand that things are quite different now .. that's great :) !!!

I hope that I have not been too personal in what I have written. I greatly appreciate what Alex and company have done to keep us updated on our dear Bobby's progress .. I read the updates every day. I am so pleased that Bobby indeed is showing a lot of promise and hope .. I was so elated to watch the video of Bobby grazing outside .. yes, Miracles do happen :) !!!!

Dear Bobby .. you are doing great, big fella .. you are showing what a great champion you always have been and will always be .. as we pray for you and light candles, you .. yes, you .. give we who love you our own hope and strength in our daily lives. God Bless You, sweet Bobby !!

Take care all .. again, thank you .. I do hope that I'll be able to come back soon :).

NINETEEN horses were saved from slaughter, and "The price tag on these horses, $7,500.00, plus travel and veterinary costs associated with transporting horses across the State Line." God bless Beth and the wonderful group at The Grace Foundation.

Wonder how many horses were in the KB trailer when they told Joe at TB Friends he could have them ALL for $4000?? For those that haven't read about this, you can read about it on the forum under Horse Rescue Issues, "CA Rescue".

Dee from Denver,
Thank you for being so honest. Yes, with so many people on this site now it can be overwhelming and I can see how people feel left out. It now takes me a lot of time to read all the posts, too much time, so I have to limit my time here also. Plus I just can't sit for that long. Even though people don't always respond to what you're saying trust that still many are reading what you're saying. I'm glad you're back even if just now and then.

Our combined energy makes mountains move and we are making progress on S1915 the horse slaughter issue. If you are able to contact your senators by letter or email in Colorado to ask them to support S1915 that would be one more voice!

Posted by: Bonnie MacRaith at October 16, 2006 8:13 PM

Well put. We don't have time to spare for people who question the Jacksons' care for Barbaro. The Senate vote is in such a critical phase. We can save so many horses if we can just get the Senate to act; and we may not have this chance again, if the legislation doesn't pass now. So let's throw our energy behind S.1915.

Don't be discouraged when they transfer you to a voicemail box for Frist...just leave your message urging him to get S1915 out of committee and up for a vote ASAP...they are making a list of these calls and what side you are on...

KEENESBURG (AP) - One of the biggest sanctuaries in the nation for tigers, lions, bears and other carnivores reversed itself Monday and said it would stay open, citing a surge in donations and the difficulty of finding homes for its 150-plus animals.

The Wild Animal Sanctuary had announced in August it would close its site 30 miles northeast of Denver because donations plummeted as people shifted their contributions to worldwide victims of tsunamis, hurricanes and earthquakes.

The announcement triggered a flood of donations, the sanctuary said in a written release Monday. The new support, coupled with the realization that it would be impossible to find new homes for most of the animals, prompted managers to keep the sanctuary operating.

The recent donations will be used for immediate operating needs and to develop a long-term business model, founder and executive director Pat Craig said.

Craig said the group was "overjoyed" that it will stay open but he warned its funding crisis was not over.

The sanctuary is a not-for-profit organization and receives no government money, he said. It describes itself as the largest of its kind in the nation.

It has African lions, tigers, bears, wolves, mountain lions and leopards on its 140-acre site

Senator Ensign's aide told me the same thing about Senator Frist today; and I said that I had called Senator Frist, too. Ensign's aide said --Good!

The information that we got from Shelley has always been that Senator Frist is the one with the power to bring S. 1915 to the Senate floor. But I trust her sources when they say that even though Senator Frist has that power, we need to keep calling ALL of the senators on Shelley's list, including Senator Ensign (and, of course, Senator Frist).

Afternoon all!

Hi Everyone,

I just spoke with Stephanie of MHR. She got home after midnight last night and her computer has crashed and she is waiting for the guy to come fix it, but in the meantime, she has asked me to give you an update. She wanted me to thank all of you (FOBs) for the beautiful flowers with the little zebra stuffed animal (Faye- she is aware that she will need to keep an eye on him:)) I did confirm with her that everyone is a girl but Cloud. Cloud is very responsive with lunging and commands and such. The weanling is also doing well and is coming along in baby steps with training and handling although along the way she gave Stephanie a nice little hoof imprint on her left upper thigh and took Stephanie "dirt surfing" while on the lead- (not as fun as water surfing as there is no water, just the dirt that you are being dragged through). The yearling is doing great and has learned how to lunge- although she just really wants to stay right up in Stephanie's pocket- she is slowly learning that she needs to move away from Stephanie in order to make the lunge concept work. The mommas are also doing great and eating well. The 25 year old momma has established herself as the alpha female and the younger momma follows her around. Our thoroughbred was too docile to cut it with the mares and is doing much better in the boys pen (smart girl!) The thoroughbred and the weanling needed some fattening up and Stephanie has been taking care of that! Stephanie and Rob are planning to bring them home sooner than originally planned - hopefully in a few weeks. We do need to raise some funds for transporting them home (for anyone who wants to and can help). This would be for things like fuel, hay, feed, supplements and shots for the pregnant mares- they will need shots like herpes shots, and estrogen to make sure they do not lose their babies during transport and they will also need blankets to keep them warm- as per the vet. Anyone who would like to donate via paypal, just designate where you would like your money to be used- i.e. transport costs, food, however. Also, we have a particular need to name the weanling first, as Stephanie needs to fill out and send in the papers for her and she currently does not have a name at all. ShannonZeena- Since you are soooo good with computers and such, we were wondering if you might be able to set up a name contest for people to vote? In any case, we really need to name that baby asap and then we can tackle the other names at our leisure.

S.1915 - CONTACTING SENATORS

When I get put through to voice mail (dislike very much), I leave a message and call right back. I immediately tell them to please not put me through to voice mail, would prefer to speak to someone personally. If you tell them, they won't put you through voice mail. Hopefully, my calls will be counted as two.

Senator Inouye is a co-sponsor of this bill, and actually it has been in committee since October 2005 (ShelleyA, you are the expert here). I was kind of surprised when they passed H503 and it went right to S1915, I thought they would make a new bill, but am not sure how the Senate works.
It's tough enough when you call and get the interns, and a lot of them are not sure either.
But from what I recall, S1915 has been in committee forever.

On Senator Frist's phone numbers

I don't think it's necessarily a bad sign that we're getting sent through to Senator Frist's voicemail. It just means that he is getting a lot of calls; hopefully many of them on our issue.

The phone number Shelley gave us is the one for Senator Frist in his capacity as Senate Majority Leader -- 202-224-3135.

Socorro, I'm not sure what your alternate number is; it might be just the one for Tennessee citizens who want to visit the Capitol, etc.

I think it's best to stick with the Majority Leader number, because we know for sure that the aides do tally calls about legislative issues at that number.

Faxes are very effective, too, if you'd prefer to avoid the voice mail. From what we understand, they are also tallied very quickly. 202-228-4637

##### Missouri Horses

Hay All!
Haven't posted in a few days and trying to get caught up! I rec'd this email from Dawn at Homestead this afternoon and wanted to share with you ASAP! Here is her letter:

"Well Gidget and CC moved to the humane society last week and doing well. Frankie is ready to go this week. Sweetie may be ready by the end of the week. Darlin will be here for a while, she is not in good shape. They all loved the treat basket from the fans of Barbaro. I do not think many of them ever had apples or carrots. After Frankie figured out what they were she started nickering for them in this cute quiet nicker. CC started gobbling them up. Gidget loved them but only from her feed box. Sweetie took them very politely at first now can’t wait for them. Darlin gets them in small pieces but not much, had a jaw/tooth issue preventing her from eating them. A lot of the other horses from the other clinics have gone to the HS and more are moving this week.

We are having our benefit November 18th at the Grey Summit, Missouri Purina conference center.

Still looking for auction items.

Take Care,
Thank for you help.

Another ACN - the Miracle continues. And Alex prevails once more. What a story about that baby! Alex, why don't you go out with another rider on a more experienced horse when you are doing new things with those babies? That was always our strategy with getting a new horse used to different trail situations. One horse will follow another, where he/she would not go alone. Bridges, water crossings, you name it. Just curious; why not use the companion horse? (Will also post this on your FAQ section, where I haven't looked in a while.)

############ More from my anecdotage, recalled because of Alex:

Alex's adventure today of the horse who sat down on the road - reminded me of one of my closer calls. Riding on the trail, in the Cook County IL Forest Preserve Woods, on a friend's mare named Fancy, with my pal Joni who was on my old mare Shanty; my pal was not yet thoroughly experienced in trail etiquette and safety concerns. I don't know whether the road Alex had to cross was a regular highway or a local roadway, whether it had fast vehicular traffic or not. The road we had to cross (Hwy 58, a little West of the intersection with Hwy 59) was far from a traffic signal or crossroad, and the speed limit there was 45 so people normally went 55 or so. Fancy and I were behind Joni and Shanty, when Joni and Shanty stopped at the road, then without a glance to see whether we could clear the crossing behind them, they proceeded across the road. I speeded Fancy up and tried to cross right behind them, but Fancy had a V E R Y slow walk and as we stepped onto the road I could see a pickup truck coming over the hill from the right, barreling toward us in the opposite lane, and saw that it was not decelerating; I knew we could not make it across the far lane without getting hit, so I pulled Fancy to a stop, and she executed like a reining stop and because she was shod and the surface was cement, her hind end went under her and plop! down she sat in the nearer lane. The look on Joni's face, from the other side of the road (they had blissfully crossed while we were floundering), was pure shock and flabbergastedness. (Joni loves to tell this story, btw.) At that point all the traffic coming from both directions thankfully stopped while Fancy and I picked ourselves up (a few scrapes, nothing serious to either of us; I was bareback so no concerns of injury from gear) and I handwalked her to the nearest picnic table (a/k/a mounting block) and no harm done. In retrospect it was my fault, I should not have tried to follow, should have waited. I knew how S L O W L Y that old mare walked. ANYWAY, one of those unforgettable days on the trail that I wouldn't trade for anything.

LIVING PROOF OF THE LIVING TRUTH

SOMETHING IMPORTANT ABOUT THE SLAUGHTERING OF OTHER ANIMALS ...

Don't know if any of you know about "canned hunting" but I just found out about it ... again, it's the inhumane, needless and senseless slaughtering of our beloved animals who are fenced in ...

Hay Barbaro,

Great Update. Another ACN...music to my soul! I will keep telling lots of people all about you and about "your" work on behaf of the horses. We love you.

Hay Everyone,

I couldn'd help but see WHITE HORSE Awards highlighted in the update. My vote would be for Dr Richardson, or the Jacksons.

Also...interestingly enough, just last night, I happened to search for white thoroughbreds on the net. There are several interesting sites that popped up in my msn search. The first one I went to listed WHITE BEAUTY and I checked out his ped on pedigreeinquiery.com.
Lots of speed and SOUND horses there. (No ND, Swynford, or John O Gaunt) in the lines. One of the white TBs was even racing in 2005.

Then I went to truecolors.com and saw some more amazing TBs of unusual colors. A place of beauty that site...that farm...It was a nice little respite from brutal thoughts and imagry of slaughter and horse abuse.

Yet, today, now refreshed and ready....I continue to call and write on behaf of ALL the Beauties...of all colors and horse breeds.

Barbaro, thank you. Everyone, thank you. There are so many heros here. And there is still a long race ahead. Lets win.

I don't know the website information, although I do remember hearing about it. Just a reminder, though -- this is an issue we've talked about sometimes here -- we want to be careful not to imply to anyone that making the method of slaughter more humane would satisfy our concerns...

The main thing is just to get S. 1915 passed so that there is no slaughter at all.

Good evening everyone,

Just catching up with some of the posts. Alex's story was so funny but was matched by yours C. Jaffe. Although funny now - I'm sure it was very frightening at the time.

Cheryl - thanks for posting the good news about the animal sanctuary. I hope they have better luck balancing the books now.

Dawn - thanks for the update on the MO horses. We mommies want to know how the kids are doing.

Sharon - I truly appreciate the MHR update. We all want to know how our new kids from the west coast are doing. Even the little details are thrilling to read.

Sam I AM - I'm feeling pretty "DUH" right now. As I said - I was in bad need of another cup of coffee. I rise at an ungodly hour.

When I read the posts from the FOBs re: S 1915, I am so encouraged. I'd continue fighting even if I had to go it alone, but it sure is nice knowing that we are all on the same team. Bless each one of you.

That canned hunting is the most vile and disgusting thing, those people are not "hunters" they are lazy cowards.

I very well could be wrong but I think canned hunting is a favorite activity of the current administration--I don't want to offend anyone or get political so I won't mention any names.

Candles for the horses

There is a category called "horse" that a few of us have been using to light candles for S. 1915 and other horse-related issues. I mentioned it late the other night and noticed that the numbers tripled after that, although they are pretty much back down again now. This is not to try to boost the numbers up to 1,000...just to let you all know it's there, in case you'd like a place to light candles for the slaughter prevention bill. I don't remember who started the group or what, exactly, it was originally for, but I think it was one of us, so hopefully this is an okay purpose for the group....Thanks!

Marilyn....just checked the video....again. It is so awful to see, but there is a lot of info on the site and different links re senators who are co sponsors and thost agains... probably all info you all have had, but this is first time I am getting it all together. Since the video didnt specifically mention Cavel Intl by name....it wont help..so another dead end..

I also talked to the Senator's aide for Sen Stevens....He was impressed with the amount of calls, etc from Fans of Barbaro...said he thought with this much interest.....hopefully the bill will at least get to the floor for a vote before the Christmas recess. Hate to think about all the lost time and senseless horse killings if it doesnt make it for the vote this session. Thanks for your help. Ellie

I have the West Side Story visual as well:

(((((((((Barbaro in the fire-escape singing, "Gorella, I just met a girl named, Gorella....and later, in the dark and stark vacant lot several horses with slaughter tags on their rumps singing, "....there's a place for us, somewhere, a place for us...peace and qiuiet and open air...waits for us...somewhere..." ))))

If anyone requests seeing what really happens there, they should be directed to the proper site (with a warning about how graphic it is)
If Cavel is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, then the other members deserve to see what really goes on there.

Marilyn makes a good point. We don't want to inadvertently imply that any kind of slaughter is acceptable. The truth is that the ONLY reason for slaughter at all is because the chemicals used for humane euthansia are not acceptable in meat used for human consumption. So if we pass this law, there would be no reason for ANY method of slaughter.

Thanks for all your help

The most important thing to impress on people is that slaughter is NOT euthanasia. Most people don't understand this.

The report released from the Agricultural Committee of House of Representatives consistently refers to slaughter as euthanasia of horses.

If we can only make one point, THIS is the point we HAVE to make!!!!

SLAUGHTER IS NOT EUTHANASIA.

This is what people have to understand. They must understand the difference!!

Just got a letter from Rep Kenny Hulshof, Congressman from MO who is just now getting back to me after I sent him a letter before the House vote. It says, in part:

"Having grown up on a family farm, I understand the value of treating animals in a fair and humane manner. Prior to consideration of this legislation in the U.S. House, I consulted with respected horse owners and other livestock experts in our state. As a result of those conversations, I am convinced that this legislation, although well-intentioned, could actually lead to long-term neglect or worse yet, the inhumane unsupervised killing of unwanted animals. I was also concerned that in addition to imposing new economic and regulatory burdens on livestock owners, this legislation could also set an ill-advised precedent as it pertains to the way small family farms manage livestock. To address this, I voted for an amendment that would have required the USDA to certify that sufficient sanctuary space existed for any unwanted horses before HR 503 would take effect..." BLAH BLAH BLAH.

I am disgusted with him. What does he think happens at the SHs if not "inhumane unsupervised killing of unwanted animals"?

It is Standardbred racing, and the Drivers are in Carts and it is either a Trotter or a Pacer race.
A Pacer is really interesting, since they have to keep that stride, if they break it, they are out.
I tried working in Harness and even went to the Meadowlands for Cat Manzi, but it never worked out. I just remember trying to tack em and saying...let me go back.......There is more leather here than in a ..........(I'll let Pamie finish that one)...

Hope I'm not duplicating - sorry if I am, but the update came out the 13th on the Missouri horses.

Also, I spoke to Hocks' vet (I know - pretty cool) - he has undergone 3 surgeries on his hocks, and continues to improve. Went off of injectible antibiotics to oral, which vet said was a big step. The vet kept saying "God bless you, God bless all of you" when I answered him about why I sponsored Hocks, and also told him how many of us are sponsoring the 26 - each has several sponsors. It was just awesome to hear the kindness in this man's voice. Thank you God.

Shelley,

Yes there is a HUGE difference in the meanings.

Euthenasia is ending the life of an animal in a humane, peaceful, and painless manner. It is merciful and respectful.

Slaughter is ending the animals' life in an efficient but callous manner, with no regard or concern for the fear, stress, and excruciating pain inflicted upon the victim. It is brutal and heartless.

Posted by: Otherlyn at October 17, 2006 12:29 AM

I just don't want them thinking they can satisfy any concerns about slaughter by tinkering with how the bolt is applied...strapping the horse down better or something. Still slaughter, still unacceptable.

Hola Babaro Nation,

Barbaro my hero, what a delight to come here and read ACN. It is my mantra for the day.

Alex I was laughing about your experience this morning until I read about Sabina's accident. It reminded me that riding can bee quite dangerous. Be careful..we need our wizard of woolley world.

Today a "delightful" aide at senators Frist's office told me that speaking to someone was impossible and that my only option was voicemmail. I left voicemails but it took 5 more tries before anyone would speak to me. I was ready for a Barbarotini after that experience. The good news was that the aide reminded me that the senator is well aware of "animal activist" concerns. TEHEEE, like that is gonna make me stop calling. I think they are getting a lot of calls. Yaaaaay for us.

to clarify, For Harness Horses, I have copied this explanation. Since I can't give directions right..... :)
Races can be conducted in two differing gaits; trotting and pacing. The difference is that a trotter moves its legs diagonally, right front and left hind, then left front and right hind striking the ground simutaneously, whereas a pacer moves its legs laterally, right front and right hind, then left front and left hind striking the ground simultaneously.[3]

In continental Europe races are conducted exclusively between trotters, whereas in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States racing are also held for pacers.

Harness racing, London Ontario 1923Pacing races constitute 80% to 90% of the harness races conducted in North America. The horses are faster and, most important to the bettor, less likely to break stride (a horse which starts to gallop must be slowed down and taken to the outside until it regains stride).[citation needed] One of the reasons pacers are less likely to break stride is that they often wear hopples or hobbles, straps which connect the legs on each of the horse's sides. The belief that hobbles are used to create this gait is a misconception. The pace is a natural gait, and hobbles are merely an accessory to support the pace at top speed.[citation needed]

I thought it was a hobble. And no, they are not inhumane. .just a PITA to put on.
Ok Bonnie, no more shorthand.
Love,
Susan

Sally in KW,

We just got the Dish with two HR stations too...am now I confess to being addicted.

Wouldn't it be great if we could somehow persuade program directors on these channels to produce and air an anti-slaughter PSA?

Also, I would love to let them know that, late at night when they air races from Japan...I chang the channels. I refuse to watch horse racing from a country that eats horse-flesh. What hippocracy! Where is there sense of "honor" now?

Pray for the horses racing in Japan. (but I just can't watch them). Too sad to know...what happens there.

I would hope that the TB racing TV people would be as concerned about THE HORSES as they are about the betting and speed...(sigh).

Greetings, Alex, re 2-yr-old sitting down...ah! Memories... Our dear old Standardbred, Bayberry, (the mare who died on Tsunami Day, Dec. 26, 2004), was twelve when we got her, and had been a racing trotter. We had a gorgeous, 2-wheeled, oak, Mennonite cart...'t was a sweet, beautiful, proud thing. But the horse hated it. Every day, when we first had it, we would roll it out, hitch Bayberry up, and head for the dirt roads of the island, just off the coast here. Unfailingly, we would get to the end of the island roads, I would turn her for home, and she would sit down in the middle of the dirt road. Bayberry was one of those horses who could speak, so one was inclined to speak to her, rather than employing the usual primitive inducements. The 'cart thing' speech went like this. You'd leave the seat, go to the front, and say to the mare, sharply, 'Bayberry, GET UP.' Bayberry's part went like this. She would look at you and say, 'This could get worse for you; I could roll over,' at which point she would begin to roll in the beautiful oak, Menninite shafts, and you would pretty well hustle getting her un-hitched, to walk her the mile/s home..Well, happening just this way every single time, the vet said it wasn't the horse that was stupid, so we sold the handsome, oak, Mennonite cart, and she rattled happily along for years in a homemade metal thing that only felt like it was going to fall apart any minute, but never did. -a long note, with a short point, laddie. You've got yourself a 2-yr-old horse, in training, that's a sitter, Alex He, or she, shall still be training trainers, by sitting, when he or she is thirty-two! It's a rarity, as horse behaviors go, but the ones that do it, keep doing it, til ...you're well-trained. Best wishes, †KAWilson

Otherlyn,
Never bet when training, still only do my tiny two dollar ones...I can tell you most of our main concern was for our horses (or the cayooses, as we used to call them)...Never knew a trainer as a major bettor. Call me naive...never saw it.
Too much work, working out, mucking, shedrowing, bathing, feeding, cleaning tack...hoof painting and picking..combing... making sure they were HAPPY. While I know others who have abused (and they were married into racing, not grown up with it, you know who I mean......Alydar...,Smartys breeders son in law , hopefully they are in jail for a long, long time....)

KIM,

I went to Keeneland fri-sat n sunday...went there sat am for breakfast with the works, there had to be 1,000 people there for breakfast.
Keeneland is state of the art, everyone there smiles,it's total class. It is by far the center of the universe in the racing industry. Its so nice it's fairy tale-like.

I toured on my own The Kentucky Horse Park friday am, it's truly a must see.I went to the Hallof Champions and saw John Henry, all 31 years of him and he's still fiesty as heck. Saw CIGAR and DA HOSS, they still look great. The museum is breathtaking as well as the Calumet exhibit. Iwas there 3+ HRS AND COULD HAVE BEEN THERE LONGER...

Also visited MAN O' WARS burial spot at the park.

This moring my wife and I were the only 2 on the tour at The Thouroughbred Training Center near Paris KY(but still in Lexington).A great facility run be Keeneland and with the friendliest people working there.A great tour and you get up close with trainers and horses and talk horses with them..a great place to see..

Being a great believer in, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all," I will not retort to the post on the Forum about MHR. However - as to the accusation that something bad must be going on because the place is locked and open to the public only by appointment, I must say that this is a reasonable measure instituted out of concern for what could happen to horses if the visitors are
ill-wishers or madmen.

The North Branch of Indiana Horse Rescue (Demotte IN) where I attended this past Saturday and know other FOB's attended this past Sunday, is also open to visitors ONLY by appointment in advance. Just wanted to add this little factoid, which may serve to alleviate some of the unfounded anxiety until we hear from the proverbial horse's mouth. CJ in Hammond IN

Hi everybody, I was reading a blog today at the google site that they found out that horses have the same, exact emotions and feelings as humans do, they go through the grief process like people, and also show happiness like people. Horses are very special and unique, beautiful horses and need to be treated with dignity and respect. They understand what is happening and what is going on around them, they are so smart. Prayers for all of us Fans of Barbaro to save all of the horses, we are their voices. Even Britain is now exposing the H.S. issue and they are against it to and want their H.S. plants shut down too, last year they had 5,000 horses go there, it is such a shame and has to be stopped. Barbaro, you are our inspiration and we love you and will do anything we can possibly do to get HR915 and HR503 passed. Thanks to Bo Derek, Whoopie Goldberg, Catie Curic,Willie Nelson and all who went to the White House this week to save our horses.
Have a comfortable night Barbaro and rest , stay warm and may you have sweet dreams ,

Posted by: Mary at October 17, 2006 2:17 AM

I have been watching these posts for a few days, and just cannot hold this in anymore.

I own and operate a very large horse rescue here in NV, just outside of Vegas. My rescue saves slaughter bound horses of all types. We attend slaughter auctions every month all over the Western states. I am very experienced and do horse rescue as my life?s passion, so I know what I am talking about.

I know Stephanie and Miracle Horse Rescue. Since many of you have donated hard earned money to MHR, let me just tell you all a few things about Miracle that are well known in my area:

Miracle Horse Rescue and Stephanie have a very bad reputation in the horse community in Southern Nevada. Miracle and Stephanie have been investigated by Animal Control more than once for neglect and improper care of the horses in her rescue. I actually got two horses in from her rescue who had been at Miracle for a few years. Both horses had been starved to almost the point of death. This is documented in photos of the horses when they first arrived at MHR and later photos of their condition when they arrived at my rescue. One horse was about one day from going down and never getting back up, the other had major kidney problems caused by her body breaking down it?s own tissue to survive. Both horses did nothing but eat for days upon their arrival. Within three months, one of the horses had recovered, the other finally passed away because he just could not recover from his body?s starving condition. He never had a chance. I have photos documenting this whole situation and Animal Control was made aware of the horses? conditions and Miracle was investigated.

I have spoken to many former members of the MHR board who quit because they did not like what was going on in the rescue and did not want to be associated with Miracle any longer. I have been told by numerous people that Stephanie has sold donated horses to a local horse dealer who in turn, sells them to either a dude string here in Vegas, or worse. The vast majority of dude string horses are eventually sold to slaughter. Miracle is open by appointment only, the gates are kept locked. Most rescues, including mine, are always open, visitors are encouraged. Visitors are regularly turned away at Miracle?s gates. This, in itself, is fishy.

I understand that over $10,000 was donated to MHR to rescue horses from an auction in OR. Let me just say that NO SLAUGHTER HORSES are sold with a catalogue listing- these are horses that are sold ?by the head?, not by the pound as most slaughter bound horses are sold. Slaughter horses DO NOT come with reg papers- again, these are horses that are sold by the head. Even the majority of the TB?s off the track that go through the slaughter sales do not come with their reg papers. The slaughter horses are sold at the end of the auctions, so with Stephanie missing the second day of the sale, she completely missed the slaughter horses coming through. Again, I do slaughter rescue on a very regular basis, and I know what I am talking about. There are monthly auctions close to Vegas that are attended by the Killers, one in Utah is only 3 hours away. She could have saved many horses there and saved the hauling cost to put toward more rescues.

The $10,000 would have been well spent going to a feedlot, like the one in northern NV in Fallon, and buying the horses that have already been sold to the slaughterhouse and are waiting for the double deckers to arrive. My rescue has bought many pregnant mares, weanlings, and newborns from this very feedlot and had them shipped to us. Most of these horse were to be shipped to Canada within 24 hours. Instead, she used your money to purchase healthy and sound horses that she will sell and make a profit on. This is NOT true slaughter rescue. Rescue is saving the weak horses, the crippled ones who will not make it to the slaughterhouse without dying in the trucks. It is not going to a catalogue sale and buying horses by the head.

Where is the Barbaro fund part of her website? You all went to her site and donated your money- but there is no mention of Barbaro or the ?fund? she set up. Go to other rescues- see how they accept donations.

By the way, the most you will spend for a slaughter horse is $500-600, the average price being more in the range of $150-350.00 per horse. Pregnant mares usually go for $500- in fact you can buy one out of the feedlot for just that price. Weanlings and yearlings are considerably less- more like $100-250.00. My rescue routinely buys horses from the slaughter auction for UNDER $100.00, we just bought one for $7.00! Then on top of this- she is asking for more money to transport them down- using her own rig? And then, continual donations to cover their ?care? once at Miracle. You have got to be kidding. A horse, even a malnourished one, will not cost more than $200.00 to feed a month- the average being $130.00 a month per horse. You can buy wormers for $2.99 in bulk and vaccinations for $8.00, someone who has multiple horses should know how to do the shots themselves to save money. Her husband is supposed to be the rescue?s farrier, so why is she charging you all for hoof care?

I think you would all be wise to ask for a full accounting of her expenses. I applaud the big hearts of those who did donate the money, but perhaps you need to take a better look at what is going on. I am telling this to you, not to make you angry, but to make you aware. My rescue works with many other horse rescues around the country, and I have a hard time saying anything negative about any rescue. I have over 100 horses in my rescue so my entire staff and I are extremely busy, seven days a week, and I do not wish to get anymore into this than what I have already said, it is up to you all to make your own decisions where your money is best spent to help slaughter bound horses.

There is nothing more beautiful to me than a rescue horse who is finally safe. I know this is what you all wanted and it is wonderful to see the giving and caring hearts who are interested in making this world a better place for horses. Just, please do some research, ask questions, get answers, and open your eyes before you donate anymore money...

Sincerely,

Jill Curtis

Bobbie B.-I first used Neurontin but it did not work. I then tried Topamax. It is an anti-seizure med used to treat epilepsy etc. but---has OFF label uses (as Neurontin) for pain management. It was HORRIBLE at first...Knocked me out, I would be the walking dead, asleep but yet awake..zombie. It took a full month to get into my system. I was taking 4 pills a day(25 mgs. a piece) at first, I was in such pain and on a walker. I am down to 1 a day now, 2 if I have a problem, and add a Flexeril and maybe Motrin(BEST all around drug EVER made) Hello-my name is Dora, and I am assicted to Motrin. I have been off Motrin for several yrs. it made BP too high. Now that I am not smoking-no high BP! Now, I take 1 Topamax, 1 Nexium and that is IT! I have not had a sciatica attack, (well-little ones)for two years!! I have the walker in my room, and have not had to use it and it reminds me to do my exercises and take my meds. Topamax really works, BUT that is more than likely what caused my kidney stone while I was in Hospital(along with other maladies this year) It is a side effect that I knew nothing about, til Dr. told me...I said "walking? or stones? I choose stones!!"

Bobbie B.-Ask Your Dr, about the Topamax, it is really being touted as a migraine reliever right now. I think it is so much better than the Neurontin ever was, and it does not make me sick to my stomach. The Nexium is for my ulcers and hiatus hernia or hiatal, either way is supposedly correct. I have to go eat a little something and wash clothes. Do you have insurance? It is VERY expensive. I could not afford it, I am now on Patient Assistance Program for poor folks w/out insurance. Be back later

To MaryMI

I don't post here much, but I visit many times a day. I know almost nothing of horses, but I read your post about the Google blog about horses having many of the same emotions and feelings as human beings, and I was touched enough to write. I have always known that all animals are more intelligent and feeling than most humans seem to have in their power to give them credit for.

My mother lives in PA and is not able to get around very well anymore. One of her great joys is to watch a neighbor's horses in the field across the street from her house. There were 5 of them, but one day about 2 weeks ago, one of them laid down. She said that she always loved to watch them lay down and roll around in the grass, but this time, the horse did not get up. She called her neighbor about it, and kept watching while one of the other horses came down and laid down beside the sick horse. It turned out that the sick horse was older and had a heart attack, but the horse who had stayed with him never got up, even after the van that came for him had taken him away. He just laid there mourning the passing of his old friend.

Today, my mom was watching as first 1, then 2 then 3 of the horses laid down. She was upset at first, but realized they were moving around and just enjoying the beautiful morning sunshine and wet grass. She said they laid there for at least 20 mins., and then the last horse standing came over and gently pawed and nuzzled each one until they stood up. I wonder if that was the horse that stayed with his old friend as he was dying. He or she might be the "big boss horse" now of the family. Anyway, it was just so sweet and shows what horses, and all animals, do feel and express.

I thank God for everyone on this site working for the anti-slaughter legislation and the welfare of our horses and all of our furry friends.

Love and continued healing for Barbaro, who brought us here in the first place.

I Believe!

I cannot post on Forum and have one more thing to say about Jill's attack on Stephanie and MHR. As to why farrier bills must be paid while Stephanie's husband is a farrier:

Stephanie's husband Rob, the farrier, remained in Nevada taking care of MHR while Stephanie was in Oregon. The new horses evidently need hoof care BEFORE coming back to MHR. Rob was not there to do that, so other professional(s) would have had to be hired and paid.

And as for why an auction in Oregon rather than somewhere else, that is where Stephanie has available, a foster care facility (her friend Julie's ranch) available for caring for the horses until all the vetting and Coggins testing etc. are done prior to bringing them back to MHR in Nevada.

Sorry if this is "inappropriate," but now that the long post is here on this board, you all deserve to hear these facts as well. (Several others besides myself already have explained why appointments in advance are appropriate for a facility like MHR. I cannot fathom that Jill lives in such a perfect world that her place is perpetually open to the public.)

Hi Lou Ann. I live in VA now, but my Mom lives in Berks County, PA, where I grew up. Some of my family lives in the Harrisburg area, too.
Thanks so much for answering my post. I'm slowly teaching my mom about Barbaro. She actually called me today because she saw him on some news story on TV. I don't know what report she saw, but she said she hurried as fast as she could and saw him for a few minutes and she was all worried about his back legs being all bandaged up. I assured her he was doing just fine, and she was happy about that. Another FOB in the making I believe. She does love watching those horses and feeding her birds!
Thanks again for posting. After the troubling posts of today, you made me smile very largely! I visit PA often, but still miss living there.

Kathy/VA-I am crying about your mama's horse story. It is so sad and so tenderly sweet. Why in the world folks would think that animals do not have feelings is beyond comprehension! My cat was so upset about his sister when I had to let her go (inoperable tumor) he would not eat, walked around and cried mournfully for a LONG time. He eventually glommed onto my daddy to be his "substitute" sister cat! My dad had retired from his job, and was home all the time-spent more time with him. He totally loved my dad!

Here are my thoughts on Jill's post regarding MHR, etc. You can either agree or disagree, but I am entitled to my opinion which I choose to share here in an open forum rather than on a discussion board.

I feel that Jill is more than entitled to post here on this site .... just as every other human being is entitled to post here on this site. She has said nothing that can be interpreted as blasphemy or salacious against another human. She spoke the truth as she knows it, respectfully and with civility. I, for one, defend and uphold her right to speak out right here rather than "behind closed doors."

The fact that she is or may be Mrs. Tony Curtis of the 'acting' fame is of no consequence to me, whatsoever. But if I was to weigh it as deserving of merit or not, I would 'err' on the side that she has absolutely no axe to grind with either Stephanie or MHR. Why? Because I doubt very seriously that Jill Curtis needs to smear or disparage another horse rescue operation because she wants your business and/or needs the money. So, I do tend to believe that what she speaks is her truth and that, at some point, it can be verified to a certain degree.

Having said all of this, I just read this entire post and I, also, have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, because something has been sticking in my 'craw' from another comment I read earlier today or, perhaps, yesterday. And yes, I do feel this site is the appropriate place to share these thoughts.

Let me first say in all honesty that I know absolutely nothing about how these rescues operate, so by no means am I casting doubt or aspersions in anyone's direction. But I can and I do think for myself based on certain 'things' I have either read or interpreted in my 'gut'.

There was one comment posted on this site that raised a very big red flag for me even before I read Jill's comments, which have left me more than a little shaken by what she has said because they tend to confirm what I was doubtful of in the first place.

I just couldn't understand the recent post asking for even more money from us for maintenance, supplies, transportation, etc. We have already given Stephanie and MHR at least $10,000 and she has spent NOWHERE NEAR THAT with the horses she has purchased, so why does she need more money from us? Let her use some of the thousands of dollars she still has for supplies, transportation, maintenance, etc. There is no way that I am donating one more penney to this effort because there is still a lot of money there to be used for various reasons.

There comes a time when we must open our eyes and 'see' what's right in front of us. I am not accusing anyone of anything 'untoward' because the facts are not yet all in; but if we, as a group, are seen as perpetual givers, donators, contributors, etc. with no end in sight, there will be many other 'sources' that will appear suddenly out of nowhere to ask or 'hint' for our financial support ... is there ever a time when we just say "No"? Or, do we just continue to give all we have to everything that crosses our path? I'm sorry but I am as giving and benevolent as the next person, but I will not say "Yes" to every single 'cause' that comes down the pike. If that makes me a cynical, ungiving person in your eyes, so be it; fortunately, I have great faith in myself and will not be affected by what others think of me, nor should any of you.

In my opinion, we need to start thinking and taking care of ourselves, too ... this is all I am going to say, but reading this has opened my eyes, I will tell you that.

Stephanie and MHR deserve their 'day in court' to explain and express themselves in answer to Jill Curtis' remarks, and I will eagerly look forward to that right here on this site.

Debbie L.A.

Thank you so much for reposting the Grace rescue site and the photos of some of the horses they recently saved from the slaughterhouse. I, too, found it incredibly uplifting - 8 pregnant mares under 10 years old, two orphans, and even the starving Arabian gelding thrown in - BECAUSE HE WAS NOTHING MORE THAN SOUP BONES AROUND HERE!

As I wrote to the Washington Post last night, I just cannot understand how anyone who believes this nation is compassionate can condone such practices as we allow - our "throwaway" society!

Robbie,
Thanks so much for your comments about what my Mom saw with her neighbor horses and how she is getting so involved with them. What she sees with those horses just makes me more sure than ever that animals know and feel true emotions. We humans are just the ones that have to listen and respond to them.

I'm so glad you have your mini-Schnauzers to make you happy and share your life. Enjoy and love them. I'm on my 2nd Golden Retriever who loves my family to DEATH! Wouldn't have it any other way.

Just thought you'd like some informarion on another horse bred by the Jackson's who has been so successful in Europe.
George Washington was voted the 2005 Cartier Award for Two-Year-Old European Champion Colt.

George Washington is a racehorse foaled on March 1, 2003 at Coolmore Stud by champion sire Danehill out of Bordighera, also the dam of the high class colt, colt Grandera. Bred by Roy and Gretchen Jackson of West Grove, Pennsylvania who own and bred the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, and who also own the Barclay Tagg trained Showing Up, George Washington is trained at Ballydoyle by Aidan O'Brien.

Two-year-old career

George Washington's debut was in a maiden race during the 2,000 Guineas meeting at Newmarket on May 1, 2005. This ended in defeat, finishing third behind League Champion over 5 furlongs.

Victory followed in his second race at the Curragh three weeks later, this time over 6 furlongs. Another win came in the Group II Railway Stakes, again over 6 furlongs at the Curragh.

The Group I Phoenix Stakes was next on the agenda, and George Washington won by 8 lengths from his stablemate Amadeus Mozart, despite having been slightly hampered at the start.

His final race as a two-year-old was in the National Stakes in September, another Group 1, and although victorious he failed to impress many, winning by just 2 lengths as a long odds-on favourite. Although he was declared to run in the Dewhurst Stakes the following month, he was withdrawn just minutes before the race after the ground was deemed unsuitable.
For his performances, George Washington was voted the 2005 Cartier Award for Two-Year-Old European Champion Colt.

Three-year-old career

His first target as a three-year-old was the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, which was to be his first outing of the season. Aidan O'Brien was attempting to win the race for a fourth time, having previously won with King of Kings in 1998, Rock of Gibraltar in 2002, and Footstepsinthesand in 2005. "George" started as 6/4 favourite and won the race impressively, beating subsequent Epsom Derby winner Sir Percy by 2½ lengths.

Disappointment followed in his next race, the Irish 2,000 Guineas, where he finished second, beaten 2 lengths by subsequent dual-Group I winner Araafa, who had been fourth at Newmarket. George's trademark finishing acceleration was blunted by the heavy ground conditions, and following the race it emerged that he had torn his foreleg muscles, accounting for his loss.

Due to the 2000 Guineas form holding up, "George's" rating has been lifted, and his performance in the 2000 Guineas officially remains the 2nd best performance by a 3-year-old this season, beaten only by his stunning win in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.

'George's' comeback in the Celebration Mile was a somewhat disappointing one, finishing 3rd behind Caradak and Killybegs, but he missed the break badly under new jockey Michael Kinane, starting some 8 lengths behind the eventual winner Caradak, and finished only 1 length behind him at the finish.

The day before his main seasonal target, the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, heavy rain arrived and 14mm of rain fell on Ascot racecourse. He was very easy to back, and his place as favourite seemed somewhat uneasy. However, half an hour before the race, lots of money came in for him to cement his place as favourite, and was sent off at 13/8. Two pacemakers were deployed by Ballydoyle, and an incident occured during the race between one of them and Frankie Dettori's mount Librettist. "George" was travelling very easily throughout the race, and jockey Michael Kinane didn't even have to ask him a question, scoring easily by a length and a quarter.

Future Plans

"George's" end of season target is currently the Breeders' Cup Mile, held on the 4th November 2006 at Churchill Downs, Kentucky.

He is unfortunately very unlikely to stay in training for the 2007 season.

Dear Dora
Thank you so much for your post. I think my Mom is really feeling the Barbaro effect, and I too agree that I don't know how anyone cannot see that animals feel honest true emotions. They are happy, feisty, sad, they feel pain, they hunger and thirst, and yes, they mourn, too!
I'm so sorry about your cat and am glad your Dad was able to fill in and be a "sister cat" It's so hard to lose them as you know. I've had some hard losses myself.

So glad I didn't miss you post.

whew what a day

Hope everyone is well. Sweet Barbaro, especially you.

My thoughts are with those needing extra love and support. LindaH, you know where I am. Darling Sabina, I wish you the fastest, most comfortable recovery possible.

Happy Birthday BDude! Dora, hope you get over your headache :( That is so miserable, have had a few in my earlier years, but after I hit thirty, I started having optical migraines, which are painless, so I feel very blessed. If all else fails, I wish the same for you.

Thanks to Rachel for the update today, guess you are gonna be inundated again, huh? :) love all you girls!

God, I pray that Mike's petition will hit the required mark. Which brings me to Alex' relating his day with Mike. It's just so hard for everyone. Most of all, the patient and his family, of course. He's making such remarkable progress, and there is such a strange dynamic in wanting to will yourself to be well, to work hard at getting there, and then not remembering why you cant be where you want to be in your progress, or understanding why you can't be there. The range of emotion is all part of it. There's almost as much healing required of family and loved ones, and it's a long, hard road. Look at us! Most of us have never even met Mike face to face, but we love him and cry for him and with his wonderful family as though we have known him for a lifetime. It will happen. There is such a tremendous amount of faith and belief in miracles emanating from all these wonderful people.

Alex, you make me laugh so hard sometimes. I could just see your ordeal this morning. Having been there, it was sort of out of relief that even the most expert riders can be challenged even by such a young horse. One day long ago, before I had my own horses, a young QH gelding wandered onto a ranch where I road. No one claimed him, no one had ever seen him, no tatoos, no marks.. Many of my friends stabled there, and this guy pops in, and I thought AT LAST!! the horse of my dreams. The ranch owners said I could keep him if my mom and dad would allow it, all I had to do was care for him and...big "and"...ride him. too easy, right? I trusted that the ranch owners wouldn't allow me to attempt to ride a wild child, and I knew he wasn't green, was fine with a halter, lead training, very sweet. He was fine wearing a saddle. But he wasn't fine wearing a person, even a small girl like myself. He was a perfect gentleman during the mount, but promptly sat down. yup... not just locked knees, not just firmly planted dug-in hooves, he firmly planted his rumpus on the ground and was not about to budge. So much for the horse of my dreams. He was very sweet and ended up staying on as a stable pony and everyone loved him but as far as I know to this day, he was never ridden. Never knew why.

Love to all and a bright and beautiful day full of promise tomorrow

I am sure you are in bed by now, but I am feeling almost 100% now. As the barometric pressure changes from hot to cold it just kills me. I hate when the weather changes here. We still have pollen and once a little warm spurt comes about, everything else blooms again!! Stupid!! What is an optical migraine? Do you get them because you need reading glasses? I have hit 44, and have had perfect vision all my life, NOW-nurse sister says I got the presbyopia!! I feel like a nut trying to read. Some fonts are easier than others, some give me major headaches. I've been wearing reading glasses since about 42, so don't feel bad. There is an alternative to getting older, but it's not very inviting. So just go with it!
Plus reading glasses are really cheap and you can find really cool ones with rhinestones and stuff. I have neon ones (I go back to the 60's whenever possible).

Thank you so much for George's background and racing stats. For the life of me, I can't see anything which mentions whether the races are on turf or dirt... Not knowing the European races like some of ours, I don't know enough to recognize whether particular races are either. So, let me ask - (I could probably go back through the posts, or try to check on BloodHorse or somewhere else, but will try you first!) - IF George has only been racing on grass, like Dylan Thomas and some of the other horses who just came over for races these last weekends, what chance does he have taking on horses like Bernardini who have been racing on nothing but dirt tracks? I know some horse are versatile - Barbaro and Showing Up probably can do both, but maybe one slightly better than the other, but other horses, changing total environments AND track surfaces, racing against top of the line proven winners??? What do you know/think???

Inquiring mind(s) want to know...

Hay Dora nope not in bed yet. It's not quite 11:00 here in CO. I'm glad you are feeling better It's so good of you to hitchhike with LindaH tomorrow :)

optical migraines are migraines that apparently affect the optical nerve, with the same types of symptoms, aura, light flashes, etc., sometimes with pain but mostly painless. I've never experienced painful optical migraines. There are a whole bunch of different causes, TIA, stroke, low blood glucose, dehydration, a lotta different things. Mine are generally stress-related, and happnen mostly when I'm hunched over my computer, so it seems to have something to do with the nerves and skelatal structure of my neck, and that is common too. Mild by comparison to the knock-you-down, crushing pain in the head, nauseating, disabling "ordinary" migraines. I've worn reading glasses since I was in high school, and my vision (far sighted) is otherwise great. Strange huh. But..then..... :)

Love ya, Girlfriend. Sleep well

Cool that your mom-in-law's name is Dora. When I cut hair, I had an older customer named Dora Buck. She was a character!! I used to have an employee that called herself Jean, but learned her name was also-Dora. Dora Jean, that is also MY name. Such weird coincidences sometimes, huh?

Never you mind, I answered my own questions by retracing my steps earlier tonight, back to the top and the kind reference Alex has to George Washington's racing potential here in the Big Breeders Cup Classic!!! I guess they're willing to throw him out there, based on his past experience with Polytrack... That'll put a whole new personal twist on that race for me. No question, I'm behind the Laels for everything they're doing for racing... for Barbaro.

Do you know how much time they give a horse like GW to practice on the track? Or is it strictly an individual choice by trainer when and where to tune up for such a change?

You are really a cosmetologist? OMG You are the only person to ever use the correct usage of that term and spell it correctly, oh did that sound like a nerd? I started cutting hair in 1980 quit cutting in 2003.I managed the same shop til I quit Feb of this year. My back, neck, shoulder, knees, body--too worn out. I worked in a "fast food type" hair salon. It used to be Fantastic Sam's then changed to U.S. Haircutters, but owned by the same slave drivers. Please tell me you are working at a good place, at a leisurely pace. Do not wear yourself out, I burnt out quickly-wanted to stabfolks in the neck with my shears... all because of big boss lady breathing down my poor neck. I cut, and managed, did payroll, receptionist, inventory, ordered & picked up supplies OMG I am starting to have flashbacks..... :(

Kathy in VA,

What a beautiful story from your mom. It is amazing, isn't it, when one's senses are attuned to a particular part of the natural work, how much more we see?

Your mother's story reminded me of an Alice Walker short story, I think I read in a magazine, named "Blue". It described her moving someplace, I think, which had a field down below her house where she could watch two horses during the day. One day an owner came for one of the horses, which left the other horse alone. Alice Walker's story was of her growing awareness of the emotional life of horses as she watched the suffering of the remaining horse from loneliness. If I remember, her own emotions ranged from pity initially to anger that no one else had recognized what would happen to the horse left alone. She is an amazing writer, and it left me in tears.

I have to go find that story again.

Posted by: Shelley in CA at October 17, 2006 6:30 AM

Sorry, it's natural "world", not "work" ... and it's later than I think...

Dora - Do you take feverfew and Vitamin B2 and magnesium for your migraines? I take them faithfully (daily), and have also been prescribed a daily beta blocker, and it seems to have decreased my migraines by about 75%. When they do hit, Amerge is the drug for me! (You're right, though - these prescriptions are ungodly expensive. I couldn't afford to have migraines without insurance, and I know I'm lucky.)

Actually, your repartee reminds me of the opening of one of my songs, to which you may also relate: "I'm a cat shitshov'ler and a horse hairdresser; I'm a cat shitshov'ler and a horse hairdresser; And if you mess with me, I'm gonna tell my master; But if you're nice to me I'll tell him even faster!" (I apologize if anyone is offended by the "s" word.)

Good morning, Barbaro...my sweet baboo and wonder-horse! Another murky morning here in Thornton le Dale, but I love these spooky, foggy mornings :-)
I'll be checking in at lunchtime for my ACN!

Good Tuesday morning, everyone!! Welcome home, Mike...glad you and your wife had such a great time!

One more thing to say....
GO GEORGE WASHINGTON!!!! I absolutely love this boy! :-) How lucky you are to have the chance of seeing him over there! Just take good care of him and send him back to us in one piece! We want him back!
