    Barbaro Updates: 121

    updates are now here.

Update 967: Just spoke to Peter Brette. He was busy in the barn today, so was unable to visit Barbaro. Sue Danner visited in his place. While Peter had not heard, he had just spoken to Michael so assumes all is well. They just had a nice stakes winner at Churchill, which Peter was pretty psyched about. Sangarita, a really nice filly. Oddly enough my Breeders' Cup host had $50 on her to win!

I asked Peter about Round Pond's chances on saturday. He reported that they are really happy with the way she is doing. The draw (close to the inside) is not ideal, but Peter says she should make a very strong showing. Peter's Breeders' Cup Classic pick: Bernardini, although he has heard they do really like George Washington (Aiden O'Brien's crew).

Update 966: I just spoke to Lisa Davison. Both Better Talk Now and Film Maker galloped about a mile and five-eighths / a mile and three quarters today. She said that while the turf was soft (they were off the turf this afternoon at the races) she thinks it may dry to good by race day. Both horses went well and she says that neither could be doing any better right now. Both will likely have the same training routine tomorrow.

Lisa said she saw Bernardini, Ouija Board and Lava Man on the track today. They all looked great. I asked Lisa for her Classic pick: Bernardini (who knew ?) She likes Invasor as a possible upset.

I had e-mailed Michael Dickinson on another matter (track surfaces) and asked for his Classic pick: Bernardini!

Update 965: A new update from new Bolton: Barbaro's cast may be removed soon which confirms reports we heard from the press this morning:

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro's right hind leg cast may be removed soon, according to his medical team at the George D. Widener Hospital at New Bolton Center. "Barbaro had radiographs taken through his fiberglass cast on November 1," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "The healing appears substantial enough that we plan to remove his cast and replace it with a splinted bandage some time next week." Barbaro has been in a cast since surgery at the hospital following his accident at the Preakness on May 20.

"We'll decide whether to remove the cast while Barbaro is under general anesthesia, after we evaluate additional radiographs," said Dr. Richardson. "If we change the cast, it will be done under general anesthesia, followed by another pool recovery."

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, November 7, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition.

Update 964: I just caught up with Gary Stevens who many would regard as one of the best jockeys in North America over the last twenty years. He also rode for a short while in Europe. Here are Gary's thoughts on synthetic tracks, Barbaro and the Breeders' Cup.

    On synthetic racetracks:
This may be the saviour to racing here in America given what we have seen in the brief introduction we have had so far from meets at Turfway Park, Keeneland and now beginning at Hollywood Park. It seems to show that speed is not as important as stamina, and our over focus on speed has not been good for racing. More of a focus on stamina has to be a good thing.

    On Barbaro:
The story is still heartbreaking. My hat goes off to his owners, the vets, Michael Matz and his staff, everyone around this horse. It is very unfortunate to happen to any horse, but to happen to Barbaro, on the national stage, it was awful. This year we have had two exceptional horses (Barbaro and Bernardini), I would love to have seen them face each other in the Breeders' Cup Classic. It would simply have been a great rivalry, and great for our sport. I couldn't pick one over the other. The performance of Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby was as good as a performance as I have ever seen.

    Biggest Breeders' Cup Moment:
First win aboard In the Wings in 1990

    Breeders' Cup Classic Pick:
    Bernardini

Update 963: I just caught up with Steve Willard (Giacomo) and Joe Deegan (Perfect Drift).

Steve: Giacomo is in terrific form. He went to the shute today, jogged around for a while. When on the track he jogged to the 3/4 pole, turned in and stood. He then galloped a mile and three quarters. Steve is extremely happy with the way he is doing. Giacomo was taking a nice hold, pulling Steve without being out of control. Likely his training will be similar tomorrow.

Joe: Perfect Drift is also in good form. Joe let him stretch his legs a little, not quite at an open gallop. This afternoon he is coming over to Churchill Downs to "paddock school" (he is based at the Sports Spectrum, which is close to Churchill). He will train at the Sports Spectrum tomorrow and then ship to Churchill after training. Joe figures Perfect Drift is ready for a big effort.

Me: The race will have plenty of speed up front (Brother Derek, Suave, with Bernardini within 3 - 4 lengths). This sets up well for both these horses, Giacomo and Perfect Drift. I want to thank Steve and Joe for their pre-Breeders' Cup insights. I will follow up with both post Breeders' Cup with their thoughts on the big race.

Update 962: Barbaro has been nominated for Performance of the Year award by SouthernSportsAwards.com. I am sure Barbaro would appreciate your vote!

Update 961: A quick review of the awards dinner last night for "Team Barbaro": Team Barbaro, Richardson, Crist Honored at NTWA Dinner. The following is an excerpt:

Upon accepting the award, Roy Jackson joked that Barbaro had asked him to make some remarks on his behalf. "He wants to first honor you men and women of the press for your honest and straightforward reporting of this whole event. You've done a great service to the racing industry," Jackson said, citing the subjects of laminitis and the anti-slaughter bill.

"Barbaro also wants to thank the multitude of people that sent notes, carrots, you name it," he continued. "Lastly, he wanted to thank Dean Richardson and the whole staff at New Bolton for the care they've given him."

Update 960: Another comfortable night last night (wednesday night) for Barbaro. I just spoke to Peter Brette, who had heard from Michael.

Ramon Dominguez just called from Kentucky. This morning he rode Rob Roy for the first time, one of his three mounts for saturday. He galloped him on the turf and let him blow out 3/8ths of a mile. He was very happy with him, he went very easily, he was relaxed and then eager when asked. Ramon did note the turf was pretty soft and likely by saturday the turf will be soft, or good at best. This is not really drying weather. This type of turf should suite both Rob Roy and Better Talk Now. Ramon met Sir Michael Stoute for the first time today (Rob Roy's trainer).

Ramon did not ride Better Talk Now today, but is looking forward to a good ride on saturday (While Ramon has ridden Better Talk Now many times in races, Lisa always gallops him etc). He should like the distance, the ground and hopefully will get an eager pace up front. If that happens he has to have a chance. He is never given the respect he deserves, and has won this race before.

Ramon also did not ride Friendly Island, and has not partnered this horse, so saturday will be the first time. Ramon is used to riding horses for the first time in big races. As long as he handicap's the race well, that is usually all the preparation a top jockey needs.

I asked Ramon what it was like to ride on the biggest day of racing. He said that he tries to keep things normal. He obviously gets a little "pumped up" but that is a good thing. It is important for a jockey to deal with any pressure well, because if they don't it can directly effect the horses he is riding. Ramon said on saturday morning he will go to the barn area and meet with the trainers of his horses. He will discuss tactics then so as not to leave everything to the last minute in the paddock. In the meantime, Ramon is flying to New York to ride Aqueduct's friday card.

Arabian Horse Found Abandoned Behind Orange County Home

    http://www.wftv.com/news/9514509/detail.html

    POSTED: 6:01 pm EDT July 13, 2006
    UPDATED: 6:05 pm EDT July 13, 2006

BITHLO, Fla. -- Animal cruelty officers said it was one of the worst cases of neglect they'd seen. A 30-year-old Arabian horse was found abandoned behind a Bithlo home in east Orange County. The horse had been forced to fend for itself for months.

Thursday, the horse named Moe was rescued.

Paula Fulton has always had a soft spot for horses, but the 30-year-old Arabian named Moe has melted her heart.

"It's so sad. He doesn't know how sad it is. If you look at him, he doesn't realize how sad he is. You've got to remember, he's an animal. He doesn't care about sad," Fulton said. "We just have to let him know that everything's okay and he's gonna be okay, right?"

Moe has been through a lot, abandoned for months in a Bithlo pasture. His previous owner sold the land and left him. The brush was so high and thick, nobody knew he was back there.

The horse looks terrible and is 200 or 300 pounds underweight, but Fulton is determined to fatten him up and nurse him back to health.

Some might say, with a horse so old, perhaps he should be put to sleep.

"When you first see Moe, that's the first thing everyone thinks. Oh, this horse is in bad shape. But look at the eyes and the face. The spirit is still there," said Jake White, SPCA.

Moe has a spirit so strong that, after being walked to Fulton's trailer, he refused to get in and, after a misstep, fell down and refused to get up.

"Well, you can't blame him. He's probably never seen a trailer, never been out before. So, we need to get him back," Fulton said.

She believes in second chances and she said Moe deserves one.

"Every morning, I want to come out there and every day I want him to be better and better. It'll make me feel good. It's just something I want to do," she said.

The SPCA said Moe's original owner is now in North Carolina, but she still faces charges for animal neglect.

Meanwhile, Moe is now at his new home in west Orange County.

If you would like to help Moe, contact Jake White at the SPCA: 407-351-7722.

    Hi Alex -
Thanks as always for the update on Barbaro. And as always, I will be praying for another healing day and a good day for you, Dr. R, his staff, the Jacksons, Michael Matz and Peter Brette and all those caring for Barbaro.

When I read the piece on the Melbourne Cup, I realized - for yet another time - we might have been a heart beat away from a similar situation at the Preakness, if not for the amazingly rapid and excellent care Barbaro received from the moment of the accident. Still amazes me. We have been blessed with five months beyond what might have been because of all caring for him. I pray and hope we will be blessed with many more...

    Good morning Barbaro Nation,

Sweet Prince, ACN! You are amazing Bobby! I love you more than ever!

    Cheryl G.,

Your website is great! Thanks for posting it for us. It's full of passion, OUR passion as FOB's!

May God bless Moe, the rescued Arabian horse and Paula Fulton for her commitment to nurse him back to health. God forgive me, but I pray they "throw the book" at Moe's former owner. To leave a horse to fend for himself or die trying is cruel, inhumane, and unforgiveable to me.

Posted by: Karen in Las Vegas at November 2, 2006 5:19 PM

So thankful for ACN for our boy. I thank God every day for his progress. I haven't posted for awhile, but check on our boy at least 8 times a day and try and keep up with some of the posts.

Saturday is going to be quite a day, Alex I hope you have a wonderful time. I am excited as I am going to Foxwoods Casino here in Ct. to watch the coverage with a fellow horse lover and racing fan. I may even wager a small amount (never done this before!) I am rooting for Gorella, Better Talk Now and Film Maker....I am torn in the Classic as I have a few favorites, Lava Man is just awesome, Bernardini so special, and have a liking for Brother Derek as well. It will be some race. Most of all I pray for a safe ride for all of the horses and jockeys.

We know that Bobby would have left all in the dust in the Classic, but I am just grateful he is progressing well and has come to mean so much more than an undefeated Champion.....he is now the Champion of all horses everywhere.

    Good Morning FOB

I am re-posting Debra's message from yesterday. Senator Landrieu's office has said that we can mention the letter she sent to her colleagues.
When making your calls, bring attention to her letter and ask them to get it out of the inbox and to the senators attention.

PLEASE make sure you call your OWN senators again, even if they are co-sponsors, to make sure they sign this letter and join with Senator Landrieu in bringing this bill to the forefront.

    GOOD MORNING FANS OF BARBARO!
RE: THE AMERICAN HORSE SLAUGHTER PREVENTION ACT

Time is running out. This is the time to stay on course and stay very focused.

THIS NEWS JUST IN FROM SENATOR LANDRIEU'S OFFICE:
    _________________________________________________
These are the Senators agreeing to sign the letter: Reid, Levin, Menendez, Boxer, Dodd, Bayh, Kerry and Cantwell. Please do not contact these offices because they are fully with our efforts to stop horse slaughter. Focus on contacting the Senators that have not agreed to sign the letter.

The Senate has effectively been closed since the beginning of Oct. There are a few Senators that want to be added as co-sponsors to S. 1915 but can not do so until the Senate comes back to start business. That is why you only count 28, but a few others want to be added as co-sponsors when we come back.

    Elizabeth/Senator Landrieu's office

Just so you all know, (maybe you already know this), it was Senator Landrieu that hotlined this bill when someone did put a hold on it at that time.

    NOW HEAR THIS!!!

Today is November 2. We have exactly seven days until many senators will be back in their offices . . . eleven days until the Senate reconvenes.

Over the last few months this board has thoroughly discussed hundreds of approaches to winning over the Senate and bringing S1915 to the floor for a vote. During that time we chose to disregard many brilliant ideas, and made the decision to follow directions . . . to do what we could do best . . . and make calls, and send faxes and emails.

TIME HAS RUN OUT! The only thing that matters now is the tally at the end of the day. That is our part to play . . . our only role, at the moment.

Above all, remember, when you’re up to you’re a** in alligators, it’s difficult to remember that your prime objective is to drain the swamp. Please do not allow yourselves to be distracted from the prime objective . . . let’s do exactly as we have agreed, and continue to drain the d*** swamp.

Below is an outline of our responsibilities (for those of you who are unsure):

    1. Call
    2. Fax
    3. Email
    4. Call

Any questions? You are being tested on this material (he he).

I would guess that HSUS is spending money on that because it's on the ballot for Tuesday. It needs the people to actually come out and vote.

I think some of the no's were meant for "no slaughter" and not on the ban. That's why the numbers are not as high as they should be for the ban and are higher than would be expected for no ban

RE LINDAH!! Haven't heard from the DB yet, as I guess he's probably going to have to keep his cell phone off while in the surgical area. Am anxiously awaiting updates which I will pass along.
I think the gift basket/flowers/caritspepurmimpts idea is great and would be happy to deliver ( and contribute ) Linda is going to be in ICU for a few days, not sure how long, but I am reasonably certain that she will not be able to have flowers, so maybe in a few days? I am real hopeful of being able to see her on Sunday, but will wait to hear from Ed (DB) on that.

Thanks Cheryl in CO ... just let us know as soon as you do, but why do you refer to Ed, Linda's husband as the DB?

Yes, let's definitely wait until she is alert and comfortable enough before she gets the goodies ... should we call Kennett Florist now or wait to make a contribution? What is the best suggestion for this?

We've started sending contributions to KF for Linda's basket (or baskets) but we are waiting for word when to send them. We won't send them until she is out of ICU and in a room where she can receive them.
Contributions can be made by phone directly to KF so we don't need to make anyone responsible for the money. You can call them at 610-444-6040
As of a little while ago, they had only gotten a few calls.

We're looking forward for your update on her condition. Thank you so much for keeping us informed.

    UPDATE ON LINDAH

just spoke to DB who took a break to run home and feed Calvin. Linda is out of surgery, Dougie Houser, MD, informed Ed that the surgery went well, he is confident that the tumor was completely removed, and she will be sent to A ROOM shortly. He expected that she would be sent to a surgical room by around 2:00 our time, which is very soon, and he's on his way back. NO ICU YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

He was able to see her in the recovery room, said she hurts "like hell", but that's pretty much to be expected, but as he said "she's there" and that's what he was hoping for.

will check back with him later and will let you all know when I hear

Alex thanks for the interview on Gary Stevens, one of my all time faves.

Love to all and thanks to God,

    Update on Missouri horses!!!!

    By Erin O'Neill

KSDK - The Humane Society of Missouri has been awarded custody of more than two dozen horses injured in a crash on Interstate 44 last month. The horses, which were on their way to a Chicago slaughter house, will soon be available for adoption.

25 horses and a mule survived the crash. Now that the Humane Society of Missouri has ownership, they have been saved from slaughter a second time. Tim Rickey is an Assistant Director of Rescues and Investigations for the Humane Society of Missouri. Rickey says, "It was one of the worst things I've seen, and I've seen a lot of things, so you know it really doesn't get any worse than that."

It was early in the morning on October 27th that a trailer carrying 42 horses flipped over on Interstate 44 just north of Sullivan in Franklin County. A veterinarian who responded to the scene said there were horses everywhere, some trapped on top of others. Rescuing the horses took hours. In the end, 16 had died, and nine had to be euthanized. Miraculously, 25 survived. Most continue to recover at the Humane Society's Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, Missouri.

The Humane Society of Missouri received ownership of the animals by agreeing not to seek recovery costs associated with the rescue, treatment and care of the animals. So far, those costs exceed $84,000. Rickey says, "The community has been very generous in this area, but you know the costs continue to mount up, and we would encourage anybody that wants to make a financial donation for these horses."

If you would like to make a donation to the "Horse Heroes Sponsorship Program," you can call (314) 951-1542. You can also see photos of the animals and an update on their condition on the Humane Society website at www.hsmo.org or the Long Meadow Rescue Ranch website atlongmeadowrescueranch.org.

The mule that survived returned to a veterinary hospital for further treatment of leg wounds. One of the surviving horses, a 13-year-old quarter horse-type mare that rescuers named Darlin, had to be euthanized because of hoof and spine injures that got progressively worse.

Barbaro Doing Well: Vets Plan to Remove Cast Next Week
    by Claire E. Novak
    Date Posted: 11/2/2006 10:14:03 AM
    Last Updated: 11/2/2006 10:14:03 AM

Barbaro, the unbeaten winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), is in good health and progressing well on his road to recovery, Dr. Dean Richardson told reporters in a Nov. 1 press conference during the National Turf Writers' Association dinner in Louisville, Ky.
"When I left this morning he was in his stall, eating, breathing, doing the things that horses are supposed to do," said Richardson, chief of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center. "Michael Matz is here in Kentucky training his horses [for the Breeders' Cup], so [assistant trainer] Peter Brette has been coming daily to walk him and he's doing great. We took x-rays of his right hind leg today and we're probably going to be removing his cast permanently next week."

Richardson cautioned that although the news on Barbaro's condition is positive, his recovery will be long and slow. He completely ruled out any possibility of the son of Dynaformer standing at stud in 2007.

"Every day that goes by is good and it gets better as he continues to do well, but he still does not have a normal left hind foot, and he needs a normal left hind foot before he can live a normal life as a horse," Richardson said. "He's better, but he has a long way to go."

    My Birthday blurb...

Ok between Alex's wicked interviews and our frenzy of voting on CNN, I just want to say thank you to the whole TWR family for the birthday wishes, each and everyone I read brings a smile ear to ear. They mean alot.

I am very grateful to be here with you all and involved in such a small way for the greater good. I love our Barbaro Nation :)Thank you all for the Birthday greetings I am very happy to call you all my friends. :)

Waking up today I hear that Barbaro is probably going to get his cast removed soon, The Jacksons and Dr. R have been honoured, Linda H has come out of surgery, CNN has finally given S1915 some exposure, only 2 more sleeps until Breeders Cup,
Cheryl has mastered her myspace, Socorro has stolen my job ..lol, Barbaro himself said Happy B-day. Missouri humane society secured ownerhship on the Trailer Crash horses, the list of god news today goes on. Nov 2nd is a wonderful day for me, thank you all for being a part of it. And Alex, if you could just get Edgar to pop out of my b-day cake it would be complete.

    And since it's my b-day, I get 3 wishes.
    They are:
    1. Barbaro to continue to heal and live a very long 100% pain free life.
    2. For S1915 to get passed in the Senate.
    3. For wishes 1 and 2 to come true.

Hi to All in Barbaroland (FFOB)! It's great to hear that Linda H. went through her surgery with flying colors! I just got through lighting a candle for her. Let's hope her doctor did get the whole tumor out, however, she may have to have further treatments to kill any stray cells that may have escaped, so she will continue to need those candles, prayers and good wishes. My best to you in your recovery, Linda H.!

I lighted another candle for Our Top Horse, adding S1915 and all unwanted unloved horses everywhere. I hope this will help Moe, too.

Speaking of Moe, that's terrible the way his former owners treated him - abandoning him that way! Did they think the tall grass would have hidden him forever? Not only should they be horsewhipped, but they also should be keelhauled under the largest ship available! I'll select the USS Abraham Lincoln (a CVN) with which to do the job. Shame on them!

Well, gotta go and Email some more Senators!

Good luck to All, and especially to Linda H.

So much good news and awards concerning Barbaro. Congratulations to everyone. And Bloodhorse reports, that Barbaro vets plan to remove his cast next week. However, the son of Dynaformer will not be standing at stud in 2007. He needs his hoof to grow.

    Yea, for the MO horses!!

Don't forget to vote for Barbaro (info above).

Barbaro you are always in my thoughts and prayers. Hope you are mentally doing ok, sometimes you must want to run free, as smart as you are I know you still understand something is and needs to heal. Just stay the noble steed that you are. You are a miracle and I adore you.

    HI, FOB's!

    ###
Have done Jury Duty - it was fun (I love being a juror).

    ###
latest with Avi - don't be surprised if I tell you I'm going to be at NBC next Wednesday. Avi's owner has made an appt. to get radiographs taken to FINALLY determine the extent of Avi's injuries. I think she's dropping hints that she wants me with her - if that is the case, nothing could keep me away. If, after discussing the results, it is determined that his injuries from his fence accident earlier this year are too extensive (i.e., if they find fractures in his spine), he will probably be euthanized and a post mortem done there. No kind of diagnostic work was ever done. As much as I still feel I can help Avi with his pain, I trust the NBC staff to be honest with his owner and can accept what she decides.
Don't want to take up more bandwidth so if anybody wants to e-mail me at lyn.gilbert@gmail.com, I'm more than happy to talk with you. Your support has been fantastic and I just want to say you are the most amazing group of people I've been around for a few years (there is one small group that is as wonderful as you, but due to corporate politics, we were disbanded in 2002. We've never gotten over it and there are friendships maintained to this day. When you come across a group of people that is pure magic, you treasure them and keep them in your life. With me, some of these other people are in Europe and I never want to lose either them or all of you.). I'll keep you posted.

    ###

Here is one comment on Willies article that SUCKS! (pardon my language)

    Shelia Short, Wright City, Missouri
While all of us find the idea of slaughter distasteful, it is also a necessary part of our life. I myself have sold horses through auctions that have gone for slaughter, and I can tell you first hand that these horses were either old, crippled or had behavior problem that made them unfit as family horses. Yes, even I have bought a few "good horses" out of Killer pens, but most of the horses standing in those pens are right where they belonged!

AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) - Will Rogers said, "You know horses are smarter than people. You never heard of a horse going broke betting on people."

However, the horses are counting on the people more than ever now. Nearly 100,000 horses are killed annually in foreign-owned slaughterhouses in America for human consumption in other countries.

With the upcoming Senate vote on the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, Americans have a small window of opportunity to save a living legend.

Horses are all the things a truly evolved human should be. There are countless examples of their innate ability and desire to heal people.

Consider the therapeutic riding programs across the country, where horses can have more progress with children with various physical and mental disabilities than their own doctors. The most superhuman thing about horses is the contrast between their unearthly strength and inherent gentleness. Humans abuse their power while horses use theirs only for good. I'd rather be a horse.

With no disrespect to the eagle, I've always thought that the horse should be our national emblem. When horse accepted man onto his back and chose to carry his burdens, it changed the world. Horses have aided mankind through his most arduous and treacherous endeavors, from the sword to the plowshare. Humanity owes an incalculable debt to the horse. In Native American teachings, Horse enables shamans to fly through the air and reach heaven. To steal someone's horse is to steal their power.

Contrary to what some people are saying, slaughter is not a humane form of euthanasia, and these are not unwanted horses. The treatment of slaughter-bound horses is most often inhumane, and more than 90 percent of those slaughtered are young and in good health. Many are sold to slaughterhouses at closed auctions, while others are stolen pets.

Humans are not smart to eat horses. Horses are treated daily with products such as fly spray, wormers, hoof dressings, etc. These products have labels warning against use on animals used for food. Anyone with horse sense would not be exporting this toxic product.

The passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 1915) would put in place a permanent and immediate ban on both the slaughter of horses in the U.S. and the exportation of live horses for slaughter abroad.

Thanks to the Society for Animal Protective Legislation, which started the national campaign to end horse slaughter, and to those who got involved and called their legislators, the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to pass H.R. 503. But the fight is not over. The Senate will vote on S. 1915, hopefully in November. Call or write your senators today. Each week our elected officials fail to act on this bill, thousands of horses are subjected to unimaginable cruelty.

For information on horse slaughter, to read my public letter to Congress and to find your senators, go to the Society for Animal Protective Legislation.

There has never been a better time to adopt. I just adopted 11 horses from Habitat for Horses. For information on how you can adopt a horse or give to this great cause, visit Habitat for Horses.

Join me and more than 500 leading horse industry groups, humane organizations, equine rescues and veterinarians in our effort to end horse slaughter.

    ## If any of you live close to an OTB, simulcast location or race track, this weekend will be packed with bettors for Breeders Cup. Great place to leave flyers if they will let you. The locations in Florida have welcomed the flyers and brochures.

I received this response from American Airlines from the letter I sent them regarding why I cancelled $42,000 worth of seats last week and why my company is boycotting their airline:

Thank you for contacting us. Please know that we too are concerned with the humane treatment of animals. We would NEVER knowingly affiliate ourselves with businesses that did not show that obligation. I have communicated your viewpoint about this issue to management personnel in the cargo department.

    Michelle F Simmons
    Customer Relations

Feel free to email Michelle at aa.com and let her know they certainly are affiliating themselves with such a disgusting business. I guess those cargo containers lined up outside the slaughter houses with AA on them don't count.I am not done with them, I have written more letters to the CEO.

Anyone ever contacted the CDC in Atlanta regarding sending tainted horsemeat overseas for human consumption?

Great show and articles on Barbaro yesterday. Edgar pleading with the vet to save Barbaro is heartbreaking and he is truly a hero.

Here is the text of the NBC e-mail

    Dear Friend of Barbaro,

Thank you for the recent good wishes you sent to Barbaro and to the people at New Bolton Center. Your kindness and concern mean so much to those caring for the Kentucky Derby winner — and undoubtedly Barbaro too has reaped the benefit of all your positive energy!

As a show of our appreciation, we would like to share with you some photos that have not been published in the media or on our Web site. You are one of the first to see these up-close images of Barbaro and his medical team. Also, as part of this letter, we are including timely information on caring for your animals during Thanksgiving, as well as the winter holidays in December.

For more information on New Bolton Center, we invite you to take a few minutes to view a short video, "On Any Given Day." You can stay up-to-date with the very latest news on Barbaro's condition by bookmarking our Web site: http://www.vet.upenn.edu/?barbaro. Once again, thank you for your messages of support — and do not underestimate the effect you had on the entire Penn Veterinary Medicine community.

Prayers to JEFF, Linda H(I KNEW you'd come thru the surgery with flying colors...rest up...), Sabina and to tall those who are sick, sad, lonely or in need of comfort.

    Voted for Barbaro...

Lou Ann, LindaA, SusanO and Cathy Potter and anybody who I forgot- thank you again for all your support re Avi. I was reading somewhere yesterday that in this time, the tests are coming first and the lessons are coming later instead of the other way around. Sheesh. But this group is amazing. Just amazing.

Our boy is getting that pesky right cast off????? That is a huge step in his recovery. Then we all can focus on the left hind and get that hoof growing - taking each day at a time.

LITF, watch over us my Long Time Sun. I look at the letters from Mr. Aleo and MR. Gilchrist and I wish with all my heart I had a few minutes with you.

Barbaro, you have come so far, dear one. You have inspired so much just by taking each day as it comes. I know you are not out of the woods yet, but you have something to work toward (all the ladies...). Shine on you crazy diamond.

Yes !!!!! Humane Society has ownership!!!

    Update on Missouri horses

The Humane Society of Missouri’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch and Northland insurance company have finalized an agreement giving ownership of the horses that survived the horrific tractor-trailer accident on I-44 September 27 to the Humane Society of Missouri. In exchange, the Humane Society will not seek recovery of costs associated with the rescue, treatment and care of the animals. To date, these costs exceed $84,000.

    Just a reminder to everyone

If you haven't voted on CNN yet - please go to
CNN and vote YES to support the ban. It is at the right side, bottom. We need that percentage to go higher. I've emailed almost everyone I know asking them to vote and several have gotten back to me to say they did. I used every computer at work to vote too. The statistics could be a weapon to use when talking to the Senators. "Did you know that according to the recent CNN poll, 80% of Americans (wishful thinking) think horse slaughter should be banned"?

The ABSOLUTE FUNNIEST POST I have read on this site ever!!!!

I LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!! I would just add one little thing:

"But it was a MOUNTED POLICEMAN "up" on Kentucky Derby Champion Barbaro who "caught" and corraled the high-speed chase, which proves that a Champion Thoroughbred can beat a Bronco or a Buffalo Bill ANY DAY!!! And Mr. O.J. Simpson, has just been outrun, outsmarted and outplayed by the great Barbaro ... TOUCHDOWN!!!
    #################################################33

Update 212: It appears as though todays update will be slightly delayed as OJ is currently driving a white bronco in a high speed chase with county sheriff's and helicopters. Voted for THE BIG GUY to win Performance of the Year and I 'understand' that you can vote more than once! HINT! HINT! I also posted this on the Neil Diamond Board and others are voting for him, too!! HE WILL WIN!! NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT!!! But I just can't wait to see "B" in his TUX when he shows up IN PERSON to accept his award with his black patent leather "shoes" and white Socks!!! And a boot to match and NO CAST!!! I wonder what his acceptance speech will be ... but I'll leave that up to him. He's "aced" everything else so far, so I know he's got the perfect "speech" for his award. And I bet he's already hired the best speechwriters in the business ... You Show Them, B!!!

    ###############################################

    EMAILS FROM U PENN ....

Nada ... and I'm crying in my pretzels over this! I sent B an email and contributed to the B Fund months ago so I don't know if that makes a difference or not. But I did get that lovely postcard photo thank you note for my donation months ago. AND ... a very puzzling surprise too .... I never requested or asked for a copy of "Bellwether" but there it was in my mailbox last week, so I guess I am on their 'list' ... maybe my email will come soon.
    ###############################################

I know that my Breyer Barbaro shipped several days ago, so I know that I will get it very very soon! So excited for that. And I know that it will arrive at just the 'perfect' moment so I am leaving the timing up to God and the Universe ... but it would be a great birthday present for me!!!
    ####################################################

Healing thoughts and prayers to all those who need it ... love and friendship to everyone here because this is such a wonderful caring, compassionate group of giving and loving people. And I am so grateful to be "in the presence of YOUR greatness!"
    ###########################################33

Finally ... BARBARO ... YOU ARE THE TALK OF THE TOWN THIS WEEKEND ... BAR NONE! My Google Alerts have increased triplefold and YOU will be missed most on Saturday, but it is YOUR presence that will tower over every "thing" and every "one" because your indomitable determination, spirit, courage and strength cast a very GIANT SHADOW!!!

    Hi everybody and Barbaro!
I faxed all of the Senators today and then we had a power outage for a few hours, at least it waited until after the faxing!
Just read the CNN report on Willie Nelson and the HS issue, Willie always tells it like it is, he is going to reach alot of people. I sent my opinion to the commentary too that I am a firm supporter of HR503 and S1915, and how this brutality has to stop immediately and that my horse was stolen too years ago. They had alot of comments and couldn't post them all so I don't think it will show up but if it helps Willie thats great!
Barbaro have a wonderful night and keep warm and cozy! LOL
Prayers for Linda H has anyone found out how her surgery went yet,

To Shannon: A very happy birthday and thanks for the links to CNN. It was great to vote and post a comment supporting Willie Nelson's statement.
To Julia: May Jeff have a rapid improvement in his condition.
To Alex: Thanks for the link to vote for Barbaro's performance in the Derby as "best".

I reposted all the info in the forum under "NEWS JUST IN!!!" This thread will keep you all in the loop on what to do next.

    Hi FOB's:
Lots of votes for the pro-slaughter group? There are only two types of people who are pro-slaughter: 1. Those in it for the money. 2. People who have been led to believe slaughter is a form of population control. These people don't have the facts, like a lot of the senators' aides we have spoken to. I have met some pro-slaughter people and after I've given them the facts, they turned around! So our job is clear. Educate people on this issue and CALL, CALL, CALL the senators!

It's been awhile since I posted. I was in India for several weeks for work, but I would sneak a quick peak everyday to make sure you were going well.

Everything seems to be going good. Your cast may come off soon, your buddies got some well deserved recognition, your MO cousins are doing well, and it looks like the FOB's are continuing the pressure on the Senators on your behalf.

Fellow FOB's, I feel like I'm way behind in what's been going on. If someone could kindly send me a quick email on the major issues over the past 3 1/2 weeks I would appreciate it. (Big questions: what is going on with Linda and her surgery and how is Erin doing) Oh yeah, and if anyone could share their pictures from NBC, I would be forever grateful.

I'm glad to hear Big B is coming out of the cast soon also. Of course any change makes us worry. I don't know why FL was suggested as a place they may send him. Does anybody know what the draw is there?
I would think they would want to keep him as close to NBC as possible just in case he needed Dr R. in a hurry. Also the people that really know him well will see any small change in his behavior sooner that others...and NBC and the Jacksons know him well. cindy a

    Hello Barbaro,

I hope you had a wonderful day with lots of treats and some grazing time.

Please don't be sad that Peter didn't visit you today. He must have been SO busy Honey. With Michael gone, I'm sure Peter has even more to do in addition to his other responsibilities. He'll be back! Just think how happy you'll be to see him!!

Chances are you got to spend some time in the fresh air with the wind blowing through your mane. (Lucky wind!)

Perhaps you're ready to turn in for the night Honey. Fresh air and goodies to eat can make anyone a little sleepy! I need you to grab your blanket and cuddle up Barbaro. As you can tell, the air has turned cooler and your blanket will keep you cozy.

Dream only sweet dreams Honey. Let the healing continue through the night and strength carry you through your day tomorrow. I'll be here in the morning.

And maybe Peter will have a chance to see you tomorrow. You're excited already aren't you?! Well, close your eyes and tomorrow will be here when you wake up! So much to look forward to!

I love you. Sleep well Honey. Good night. XXOO

Mike C you havent answered any of my questions!!!! Where did you see a pic of angrita in the winners circle with the Matzs and Edgar?

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at November 3, 2006 3:00 AM

    Mary: this is hilarious;

This backstretch is also where Matz, an Olympic silver medalist in equestrian events, learned about the glare of the spotlight. As the trainer of an undefeated horse coming into the Derby, he had to deal with more media on a daily basis than he had ever seen. And he marveled as they scrambled for every morsel of information about his horse, his training methods and his personal life.

The media wanted to hear him explain his strategy - bringing Barbaro here without a race in five weeks leading up to the Derby - and they wanted repeatedly to hear the story of a deadly plane crash in 1989 in which he helped three children to safety.

"All the attention and the way everything I did [in training] was looked at is still a surprise to me," Matz said. "I didn't know I was such an oddball, doing everything against the grain.

"Do I look that unconventional to you?" he said to a passer-by, who smiled and shook her head no.

And then Matz turned to a security guard.

"Hey, could you check in there and see if my horse is hanging upside down in the stall?" Matz said, further enjoying the moment.

Posted by: Lynda Pellitteri From SE Texas at November 3, 2006 3:06 AM

MIKEC; You said that it was nice to see the Matz's smiling again, so I assumed you saw a picture

Hello to FFOBs and Horse Lovers Everywhere!

I too have gotten a thank-you from Barbaro and UPenn vet. I guess it was for all the well wishes I have sent him in the past. I checked out the pix, they are really wonderful! They show how much Barbaro knows that the people taking care of him are helping him to get well. Anyone who thinks that horses are stupid or can't tell what's going on around them has rocks in their heads and mush for brains!

Now for the moment you've all been waiting for; today's list of Senators I have Emailed. They are as follows: Kohl, Leahy, Levin, Lieberman, Lincoln, Obama, Roberts, Sarbanes, Dodd, Dole, Durbin, Feingold, Feinstein, Graham, Burr, and Carper. Not bad for a day's work for Our Top Horse! But he's most definitely worth it. In fact, Barbaro's worth more now than he would have been if he had won the Triple Crown, because he has brought to all of us a greater awareness of the plight of many horses who are not as fortunate as he is. Barbaro is truly a Very Special Horse.

Happy Birthday to Shannon! I really get a kick out of some of your posts. May you have many more happy returns! I have a nephew who is a Scorpio, his birthday is November 8. Me, I was born in mid-July, making me a Cancer cusping on Leo. Oh well, you can't have it all!

Well, gotta go now, I need to relax and go to bed early, so gnight all!

Rest in Peace, Darlin! At least it's good news that your fellow horses and the hinny now have a permanent home!

Best wishes to all fron Laura S. in Washington State!

    Peggy

Laminitis can occur in any horse, at any time, it still is a "mystery" at times why some get it and some don't. It can come on quickly or slowly.. There is nothing you can do as it is hard to diagnose early on.. They were monitoring Barbaro every day, every 2 hrs after his injury for that in all his feet.

Sling is not something to use and most will try to avoid it until it is really needed. Sling itself can cause problems. IT worked for Barbaro after his laminitis to help with the pain and taking pressure off of his feet. He quickly learned how to use it and when his pain was under control and he was able to keep weight even, he was removed from it. They only used it on him because of the laminitis and not the fracture.. That saved his life .. giving him that time to releave pressure from his legs and feet.

I can give you some good websites that talk about Laminitis. Just can happen at any time.. to any horse. I have seen ones with less severe laminitis that had to be put down because they could not get the pain under control. That would be like if someone ripped off all your toe nails and you had to try to walk on your feet.. very painful. NBC and Dr Richardson did a GREAT JOB on what they did for him.. Dr R will be doing a paper on how it was treated and what they did..

I am so grateful to the WhOle Staff in what they did for Barbaro.. he still has a battle ahead of him, but the worst is over..

m glad to hear Big B is coming out of the cast soon also. Of course any change makes us worry. I don't know why FL was suggested as a place they may send him. Does anybody know what the draw is there?
I would think they would want to keep him as close to NBC as possible just in case he needed Dr R. in a hurry. Also the people that really know him well will see any small change in his behavior sooner that others...and NBC and the Jacksons know him well. cindy a

I didn't know that bringing Bobby here to Florida was even under consideration, but the warm climate down here would probably be better for his recovery than the cold winter weather up north. Of course, the decision isn't mine but if Bobby came down here, chances are he would be stabled in Boynton Beach where Michael's other horses are stabled during the winter months.

AND .... if that's the case, and we can have even the slightest chance of seeing Bobby "up close and personal" ...THAT is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I guess time will tell but just reading that it's a possibility lifts my soul and gratitude for it to happen.

    Bernardini Still In Barbaro's Shadow

    POSTED: 2:22 pm EST November 2, 2006
    UPDATED: 2:29 pm EST November 2, 2006

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- No matter what happens -- even on the biggest day in thoroughbred racing -- Bernardini seems destined to remain shadowed by Barbaro.

The Kentucky Derby winner is recovering from a devastating misstep at the start of the Preakness in what has been a bittersweet year in racing.

"It's wonderful that Bernardini came along, but it's taking awhile to get over Barbaro," longtime horse owner Cot Campbell said.

The Breeders' Cup, where nearly all the top horses in the world compete to determine the best of the best, features eight races worth $20 million at Churchill Downs on Saturday. All eyes will be on one race and one horse -- the $5 million Classic featuring the sensational Bernardini.

The 3-year-old colt is the sport's brightest star after six straight victories, and he's the overwhelming favorite to win and be voted Horse of the Year.

The Preakness sealed the Bernardini-Barbaro connection. The result left Barbaro fighting for his life at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., his right hind leg shattered, and Preakness winner Bernardini trying to prove himself a worthy champion, too.

"It would have been a great race between them," Bernardini's trainer Tom Albertrani said. "It's just unfortunate what happened to Barbaro. I think it could have been a great rivalry, like Affirmed and Alydar."

And it could have happened in the Classic, with Barbaro taking on Bernardini and top contenders Invasor and Lava Man.

"That would have been certainly interesting," Barbaro trainer Michael Matz said. "After Bernardini got real good, there was really no one that could challenge him. Whether these older horses do that, we'll see on Saturday."

Barbaro's jockey Edgar Prado has a chance to defeat Bernardini aboard 30-1 long shot Premium Tap, but he would prefer to be back on his Derby winner.

"That will have to be a fantasy race," Prado said. "It will be in the memories of all the fans."

In racing, timing is everything. And it seems that whenever a popular horse is no longer able to race, there's always another ready to step up.

This year, it's Bernardini in for Barbaro.

"It reminds me of a quarterback that gets hurt and the other one comes in and he's just as good," said trainer Nick Zito, who will send out Sun King in the Classic. "It's a blessing that Bernardini came along and took Barbaro's place because he looks like he's great, too."

Barbaro is not the only Derby winner to be injured or retired before the Breeders' Cup, and probably won't be the last.

Giacomo, the 2005 Derby winner, missed last year's Classic with an injury but is back for Saturday's Classic. Smarty Jones, the 2004 Derby and Preakness winner, was retired after finishing second in the Belmont Stakes in his bid to capture the Triple Crown.

Each time, there was another horse to take center stage: Afleet Alex won the 2005 Preakness and Belmont; and Ghostzapper had an unbeaten 2004 campaign to take Horse of the Year honors.

"The heroes come and go pretty quickly in this game," said D.G. Van Clief, Breeders' Cup president emeritus. "You lose a good horse and then he's replaced by a brilliant racehorse. Barbaro is one of the great stories of the year - his survival and now his recovery shows what a game animal he is and what great care they are giving him."

Barbaro's rise to fame was rapid. Entering the Derby, the 3-year-old colt was unbeaten in five races. When he overpowered the Derby field and won by 6 lengths -- the largest winning margin in 60 years -- Barbaro was being hailed as the next Triple Crown winner and first since Affirmed in 1978.

Then came the Preakness, when Barbaro took a misstep a few strides out of the starting gate. His right hind leg flared out awkwardly as Prado jumped off and tried to steady the ailing horse. Race fans at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore wept. Within 24 hours the entire nation seemed to be caught up in a "Barbaro watch," waiting for any news on his condition.

And each time things looked grim, Barbaro pulled through, from the five-hour surgery the day after the injury to the laminitis that set in and caused 80 percent of his left hind hoof to be removed.

The right leg is all but healed, while the left foot continues to grow back slowly.

"He still does not have a normal left hind foot. ... He still has a long way to go," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Barbaro's veterinarian who was honored Wednesday night by the National Turf Writers Association, along with the rest of Team Barbaro - owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson, Matz, assistant trainer Peter Brette and Prado.

Millions have been captivated with Barbaro's recovery, and the hospital still receives carrots, apples, mints and get-well baskets addressed to the colt.

Meanwhile, Bernardini's impressive 5-length Preakness victory was all but overlooked. Trainer Todd Pletcher noticed, though, and called the win as impressive as Barbaro's Derby victory.

Albertrani, who trains Bernardini for owner Sheik Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai, knew he had a special horse and that eventually everyone would notice.

    He was right.

After the Preakness, Bernardini was rested and held out of the Belmont Stakes. But he came back better than ever and easily won two races at Saratoga -- the Jim Dandy Stakes and the prestigious Travers Stakes.

Last month, the son of 1992 Horse of the Year A.P. Indy tuned up for the Classic with a dominating 6-length win in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.

Now comes the Classic, the richest race in America and perhaps the final race of Bernardini's career.

"If he wins, he will stamp himself as one of the all-time greats," Albertrani said.

And Barbaro, no doubt, will be right there with him.

“Barbaro isn’t here, but Bernardini is here. You’d have to say that Bernardini is the equal of Barbaro,” said trainer Nick Zito, who will saddle longshot Sun King for the Classic. “It’s a blessing that we have Bernardini.”

Yet, when the Classic goes into the record books Saturday, few will be able to resist the temptation of wondering what would have happened had Barbaro not taken that one bad step.

A galloping ghost: Barbaro in thoughts

    By Ed Gray
    Thursday, November 2, 2006 - Updated: 04:22 PM EST

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Bernardini finally made the scene at Churchill Downs yesterday afternoon for a clash with Lava Man in Saturday’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The showdown between the two best U.S. horses in training promises to be a classic, indeed: East Coast vs. West Coast, regally bred 3-year-old colt vs. gelded former claimer, winner-take-all in the chase for 2006 Horse of the Year.

Add George Washington and David Junior, a pair of European superstars who’ll make their debuts in the United States and on dirt, respectively, throw in 2005 Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo, and the finale to the $20 million Breeders’ Cup World Championships would seem to have all the elements for a spectacular finish, except one.
Barbaro is conspicuous by his absence at the site of his brilliant triumph in the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. When Bernardini and Lava Man battle it out for supremacy in the shadow of the Twin Spires, Barbaro will continue to defy staggering odds while fighting for his life in Pennsylvania.

Barbaro’s absence at Churchill Downs this week has gotten people in the thoroughbred racing world to ponder what might have been had Barbaro not suffered gross misfortune in the Preakness Stakes, taking a bad step that ended his career and still has the potential to end his life.

Barbaro has shown as much heart during the near-miraculous recovery process as he demonstrated in his 6-length triumph at Churchill Downs in May.

“It seems like a long time ago. It’s nice to be back, having fond memories before,” said Barbaro’s trainer Michael Matz, who has returned to Churchill Downs to saddle Round Pond in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. “I’ve never had a chance to reflect on what he did winning the Derby. But he’s doing well now.”

Matz or his assistant, Peter Brette, makes the daily 19-mile drive from Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland to the New Boston Center to visit Barbaro, whose right hind leg is still in a cast (which could be removed next week, a doctor said yesterday) and whose left hind foot is equipped with a boot. Although it has been nearly six months since Barbaro was pulled up shortly after the start of the Preakness, the valiant 3-year-old is still receiving cards and presents.

“He brought a lot of people together, that’s for sure,” Matz said, his voice cracking with emotion.

Given that Barbaro was just the sixth undefeated Derby winner in history and loomed as racing’s next superstar, the 2006 Preakness has become extremely reminiscent of the 1995 Donn Handicap, in which lightly regarded Cigar scored a memorable upset after reigning Horse of the Year Holy Bull was pulled up with a career-ending injury on the backstretch.

Cigar emerged from the Donn to win back-to-back Horse of the Year titles, as well as posting a 16-race win streak. Bernardini emerged from the Preakness to capture the Grade 2 Jim Dandy and back-to-back Grade 1 victories in the Travers Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup, bringing a six-race win streak into the Classic
“Barbaro isn’t here, but Bernardini is here. You’d have to say that Bernardini is the equal of Barbaro,” said trainer Nick Zito, who will saddle longshot Sun King for the Classic. “It’s a blessing that we have Bernardini.” Yet, when the Classic goes into the record books Saturday, few will be able to resist the temptation of wondering what would have happened had Barbaro not taken that one bad step.

    Hi Everyone

It's late, and my apologies for that, it was a loooooooooong day

I called Ed (LindaH's DB) at 7:00 (MST) tonight, thinking I would either catch him at home or close to home, but he was at the hospital, in Linda's room. He said "she's great, want to talk to her?" I was amazed she was awake and coherent. She said she was doing well, a little sore, and she was tired. TOTAL amazement. She asked me how I was, how everyone ELSE was, and of course, how was "our boy". I told her there were lots of good things to report to her, lots of wonderful messages for her, and that I would print them out to give to her. She said to say "hi" to everyone and to say thank you for thinking of her. THANK YOU!!!! Told her I'd call her tomorrow to see how she's doing, and plan to pay a visit over the weekend, if she's up to it.

For all those who have talked to Kennett Florists, I think that we can definitely give Alie or Bernie the go-ahead since Linda is not in ICU (thank God...the prospect of that was terrifying to her) I'll call Alie early tomorrow to give her all the particulars on the address of the hospital, etc. I think the idea to include carits and pepurmimpts is just precious!

Linnie, I'm anxious to hear what you got for your birthday! Isn't that SO like Linda?

Got my thank you from UPenn. It is wonderful Sorry Cora, that you didn't get one. I'm sure if you post on the UPenn message board they'll send one to you.

Dora ( you and Cora must be twins :)) I'm glad you got your 'puter fixed. I really don't think anyone over the age of 20 is as techno-savvy as any 13 yr old, so don't feel bad :)

Will write more about Linda after I talk to her tomorrow.

Hope everyone had a great day. Alex, have a smashing time at Breeders' Cup.

    Love to all,

    Cheryl

Good night/ morning y'all...don't know if any of my FOB's are up at this late hour but just have to share my excitement with someone. It's a beautiful balmy fall night here in Florida and although my barn is empty at present my heart is so full of hope and happiness. Wonderful piece about Barbaro on ESPN this week, great recognition for Team Barbaro, the big boss horse (he has grown while in NBC) may be getting his cast off AND going home (no place like it!), the MO rescuees are now safe (praise God, my prayer was answered), and I received my thank-you letter and special pics of our boy. I just feel so up-lifted. There is so much love and good feelings that come through this site...I am NOT a computer person, but I sure feel the love and am so grateful for all the lovely people I know only by name but share the same love and passion for our non-human brothers and sisters. O.k., I've got five more e-mails to send to the senators, candles to light, and have to watch the video of Barbaro winning the Derby one more time. Please all, say a prayer and light candles for all the horses and their riders in the BC race on Saturday. It will be a big day for all and I'm sure that Barbaro will be mentioned more than once...we all know he is the Champion of more than just a race.I care not who wins what, I just ask Gods blessing that all are safe. Finally, a prayer to our creator to please comfort the hearts and calm the spirits of all those who stand waiting in the pens and feed lots. Let them find comfort in their togetherness as I can ease my own heart only by knowing that their souls are all precious and will have a special place in Heaven. I love you Barbaro, thank-you Team Barbaro, and God Bless the Barbaro Nation. Night y'all.

Hi Bonnie Lee & Sherry, any other night owls - another FOB here still up to catch your lovely posts. One truly can feel the love and positive energy coming from this site - Barbaro truly did bring a world together.
Can you just imagine for a moment being one of Barbaro's ICU nurses - keeping watch over him in these beautiful quiet hours of the night . . .
Sweet dreams, Barbaro, of Lael Meadows to come, and we continue storming Heaven for your equine friends, God Bless them.
Good Night to all . . . Lou Ann

It was great to see your comments on Willie Nelson's article on CNN. Many people saw what you wrote about "America's Dirty Little Secret".You got the message out to a lot of people by responding to the Nelson article.
    Way to go!!!!!!
