Good morning Bobby, Alex & Everyone! I'm early today, will check in later today for last night's update...thanks, Alex! Bobby, I hope you have a great day ahead! :) I will be away next week with no computer access....I'm going to suffer from not knowing how you are doing, Bobby, but I will be on that computer first thing next Friday when I get home!

I pray that the cast removal will go smoothly and all will be well next week. Until next Friday, big hugs for you big guy and lots of love coming from this corner of the world! :)

I'm not a regular "poster" on the site, but I do read almost every day. Now, I'm asking that you guys please say a prayer, light a candle, cross your fingers...whatever...for my mare, Gifted Colors (Gift). At present she is in a vet clinic in Aiken, SC and will undergo scoping today to see if she has ulcers. After sustaining an injury to her sesamoid ligment the end of April, she's been on stall rest/confinement to small paddock for the past 6 months. All was going ok until August, when she colicked, and then colicked again in Sept. and just last weekend. The vets can't figure out what is wrong. They've thought impaction, but most times she is extremely distended and has displaced a couple of times. She's pulled through with the help of fluid therapy and drugs to move her gut but this last time, I picked her up on Tuesday and by the next morning, she was lying down, in pain again. One vet is afraid that her cecum isn't working as it should, that the pacemakers are out of whack, which wouldn't be a good thing. I've changed her hay, I make "soup" out of her grain, I've given her ulcer medicine for the past month. Wednesday was the first time she's been able to go out to her field in all this time. We'd hoped to get her back into some canter work first but because of all the colics, we've only progressed to the trot. However, it has become apparent that her digestive system is more important than her foot right now, so I let her out for a few hours, hoping that the movement/grazing would help. But it was later that day that she started being painful. This time, it didn't go into a full blown colic like the times before so I'm hoping it was ulcers and not cecum issues. Anyway, please keep her in your thoughts today and over the weekend as the vets try to figure out what is going on with her. Thank you!

I, too, have been saying the same thing about Bobby wintering in Florida. Of course I'd love to have the big "B" in our state, but more importantly, I think the mild climate with daily grazing and sunshine on his back would definitely promote his healing. I know what Pennsylvania winters are like. I lived there my whole life before moving to FL 6 years ago. They are not only cold but bleak.

We will defintely post on TWR when we plan the next get together. It is so much fun when the Barbaromaniacs all meet and get to talk horses non-stop.

I live in Delray Beach on the East Coast, just north of Boca Raton and I was part of the Barbariannes Group who did our first trip to Calder Track together in September. It was great fun and we look forward to more outings with more FOBs, and we are more than happy to include you.

As Janice said, a bunch of us are planning to visit the stables where Michael Matz has his horses during the winter down here in Boynton Beach, and as soon as we find out more information on this, we will plan a day to all get together and visit the horses. HOPEFULLY, The "Big B" may be spending a little time down here in the warm climate during part of the winter months .... that would be just "Barbarolicious" for all of us .... see it and you will believe it and I will just keep seeing Bobby basking in the Florida sunshine!!!

We are also planning a day at Gulfstream Park during their meet ... hopefully for The Florida Derby!!!

Matz, Round Pond have ground to gainIn her last start, the Distaff entry finished third, seven lengths behind the winner.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Just as he had once before, trainer Michael Matz will watch jockey Edgar Prado get on one of his horses tomorrow in a $2 million race at Churchill Downs. It is the site of their greatest collective triumph, Barbaro's Kentucky Derby victory.

Tomorrow, Round Pond, owned by Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms, will have her own big moment, the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

"I've got to find a way to make seven lengths up," Matz said yesterday.

In her last start, Round Pond finished third, those seven lengths back, in the Grade I Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct . 7. The top two finishers, Fleet Indian and Balletto, are both here. Fleet Indian is the 8-5 morning-line favorite while Balletto is a 6-1 choice. Round Pond is at 15-1.

Coming off foot problems, Round Pond didn't get a workout before the Beldame. Matz believes she is coming into the Breeders' Cup in much better shape.

He blames himself for the foot problems. He thought earlier problems were gone after he had used glue-on shoes.

"Her feet have thin soles," Matz said. "Her soles were a little too close to the surface and needed to be raised a little bit. Glue-on shoes make the difference."

He had stopped using them after she finished second in the Molly Pitcher Breeders' Cup Handicap at Monmouth Park on Aug. 27.

"I thought she was doing good," Matz said. "I just didn't catch it in time. I can't blame her for that. It was my fault. I made the mistake once. I'm not going to do it again."

Round Pond is getting some respect here because she won six times in eight starts under former trainer John Servis, before Servis and Porter parted ways earlier this year. At that time, foot problems had Round Pond laid up.

But exercise rider Pam Ritter got on her a couple of weeks ago at Keeneland. People had told her of past foot problems.

"I scratched my head," Ritter said. "She worked really great, very relaxed. Whatever problem she had, I don't know about."

The five-furlong workout in 59 seconds has Matz believing that at least some of those seven lengths can be made up.

Of course, however it turns out, ESPN's cameras will be on him. Matz back at Churchill Downs without Barbaro is a subplot, a big one, even though there could have been a Barbaro vs. Bernardini heavyweight rematch here if Barbaro hadn't gotten hurt and the Preakness had turned into a duel to the finish.

"A lot of good memories," Matz said of being back at Churchill Downs, "and we've got to make the best of it. I wish [Barbaro] was here with us, but that's not going to happen, so the next-best thing is that he's doing well."

Cast to come off. Dean Richardson, head of surgery at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at Penn's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, said Wednesday that he planned to take the cast off Barbaro's right rear foot next week. The foot is the one Barbaro injured at the Preakness.

Barbaro will remain at the center as his left rear hoof is regrown. In July, 80 percent of the hoof was surgically removed after laminitis set in.

I received an article from Front Range Rescue, Ginger Kathrens who wrote and did a Nature Series on PBS about Cloud and the wild horses.

She indicated that Cloud and other 200 horses cannot stand the drastic reduction that Bureau Land Management plans to do.. To reduce these horses anyway they can..they even take helicopters and run them off cliffs, etc.

Last year, Sen. Conrad Burns slipped an amendment into the FY2005 Appropriations Bill--without any hearings or public comment that severely weakened the Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act..

By the way, I heard Bill O'Reilly said last night Sen. Burns is winning..

Cloud has had books written about him and his fellow friends.. This shows pictures of a days old foal struggling to catch up with the herd..being chased, etc.

Robyn Hoffman- Its pretty chilly here in MN too, just ask my Husky Juneau! Ms Kita and my Juneau are alike, and spoiled I'd say! I couldn't find Juneau yesterday morning. After turning all the lights on in the house I found him curled up in a ball on my black leather sofa. Juneau is mostly black. It took a lot of effort on my part to get him to go outside. He would much rather be inside where its warm.... a cat-like attitude I guess.

Bobby! You were on my mind a lot yesterday. I hope you get to watch the Cup Saturday. Good luck with the cast removal-- don't go bonkers and kick up a storm after its off. Love you bunches! Grow hoof grow!

If you watched animal planet or pbs nature series...the filmmaker Ginger Kathrens...has taken several pictures of the wild horses and made films...Cloud is a beautiful wild horse she has named and followed.

They are begging to get the bill passed and write the Bureau Land Management exactly to save these wonderful horses.

Another primary example..this bill has to pass and there is lots of work we as one has to get done...

Thank you so much for the treats you sent for Baker Bean and his friends. I am sure at some point down the road they will be able to have them but for the moment we are holding them in the office.

The horses are doing well. We have started the worming process and they are passing huge amount of strongyles and ascarids but seem to be handling the process at the moment. They are all on the “four” meal a day program at the moment and free choice hay. They are no longer in quarantine and are very excited to be out in the sun (what there is of it) instead of in the indoor.

Dutch Rescue Succeeds in Saving Horses

Rescue workers on horseback lead a herd of horses through flooded fields from a small knoll in Marrum, northern Netherlands, Friday, Nov. 3, 2006. Rescue workers saved a herd of around 100 horses that have been stranded on a tiny knoll since a fierce storm threatened to submerge them three days ago, in an incident that has transfixed the nation. MARRUM, Netherlands - Rescuers on horseback lured a stranded herd of about 100 horses off a mud-soaked knoll where they had been stranded for three days and led them through receding floodwaters to safe ground Friday.

Before they could be saved, 19 horses drowned or died of exposure from the days and nights on the earthen mound that was turned into an island during a storm Tuesday night.

The plight of the horses has riveted the country, which followed rescue attempts on television and in newspapers after the storm surge pushed sea water into the wilderness area outside the dikes of Marrum, a town 90 miles northeast of Amsterdam.

Four women on horseback guided the animals back, and the entire herd _ except one horse _ followed without hesitation.

One of the women fell into the brackish water during the ride back to higher ground about 650 yards away, but she was uninjured and remounted her horse to finish the job.

The remaining horse was led back later, escorted by riders. It collapsed after reaching shore, and was being attended by veterinarians.
Earlier in the day, firefighters and animal welfare officers had carefully mapped out the return route.

The storm lifted the North Sea waters as much as 13 feet above normal. Three days later it was less than 3 feet deep in most flooded fields, but up to 6 feet deep where they are crisscrossed with drainage channels.

Marrum's fire department floated or ferried around 20 horses, including the smallest foals, to safety with the help of small boats Wednesday, but rescue efforts later stalled.

Dutch television and newspapers showed dramatic images of the horses huddled together, their backs to the wind that was whipping up small waves in water surrounding their isolated island.

Marrum's mayor, Wil van den Berg, said helicopters were ruled out, as the noise and lights might have panicked the animals and caused more to drown.

The Netherlands' Party for the Animals said it has filed a complaint against the horses' owner, and the operator of the wilderness area where they were stranded, since the national weather service had put the country on alert for rising floodwaters early Tuesday.

The Agriculture Ministry ordered an investigation.

Barbaro’s cast may be removed soon

November 2, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA ­ Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro’s right hind leg cast may be removed soon, according to his medical team at the George D. Widener Hospital at New Bolton Center. “Barbaro had radiographs taken through his fiberglass cast on November 1,” said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. “The healing appears substantial enough that we plan to remove his cast and replace it with a splinted bandage some time next week.” Barbaro has been in a cast since surgery at the hospital following his accident at the Preakness on May 20.

"We will take some more radiographs after his cast is removed under general anesthesia. He will then be recovered again using our swimming pool system."

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, November 7, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

I've been out of pocket the past few days but hope to get caught up on the Barbaro Nation activities over the next few days. This weekend will be a big personal push for SB 1915.

I'm also asking for some positive thoughts for my poor old Felix. He relapsed. His right rear knee is still swollen and causing him some problems. He's on a lot of meds and hopefully they will start to have an effect. On the plus side, he's eating like a horse!

The reason that Barbaro is such a hopeful example to us is that he simply has faith that he will heal. His spirit is like a pure, constant, confident prayer of knowledge that he will be healed. Sometimes I think that our situations should be reversed...that it is he who should be praying for us. He is a great teacher.

Also, at www.gratefullness.org I started a group for MOE, the 30 yr. old rescued horse that was abandoned by his owner for months after putting his property up for sale and abandoned. Moe is 300 lbs. underweight and very weak, but the wonderful woman who found him and took him is going to nurse him back to health and keep him, MOE really needs are prayers. The spirit of life in his eyes told her that this horse wants to live and she is going to make that happen, God bless her and MOE.

"It's the worst kind of thing that can happen. We live with these horses and we get very close to them. It's upsetting and it's like losing a friend or a member of the family."

I emailed my two friends who have offered to take me to the eye place. I told them that if they just can't sit in the lobby for 4 hours (I hate to ask that of anyone) then that was ok, I had a friend who was willing to take me back home. I hope that is OK.

When I spoke with KS yesterday, they told me that little Erin was having a tough time right now, too. Keep her in your prayers.

Another non-writer here, but reader. Could we throw in a prayer for my 11 yr old Golden Retriever? Besides the horse, my constant companion when I'm home. Will soon be leaving me due to cancer of lymph nodes. I'm spoiling her to pieces, enjoying her, and most of all, praying her quality of life stays with her as long as possible. ok, maybe I'm asking for a prayer for me too, as all of you know, losing an animal friend is very hard.

hi Becky. We lost a beloved golden retriever to lymphoma too. I had found her horribly abused and wandering the street and we nursed her back to health and had her for 4 years before the lymphoma. Just spoil her and give her good things to eat as long as she is able to enjoy them.

Editorial: Senate should ignore horse slaughter outcry
Bill to stop human consumption of horse meat is misguided.
Published: November 03, 2006

Of the small-potato issues Congress should avoid, the slaughter of horses for human consumption ranks near the top. Yet legislation to prevent it passed the U.S. House earlier this year. The Senate is to take it up soon. It should put this nag of a bill out to pasture.
Three slaughterhouses in the United States currently process horses for human consumption. The plants are owned by foreign companies, and the meat is destined for foreign markets; unlike most Americans, some folks enjoy a good piece of horse flesh.

But not many Americans will eat horse; they abhor the idea of someone grilling a hunk of Nelly. This legislation is, at its core, an effort to impose that cultural value on the rest of the world.

Of course, that's not what proponents of the bill tell you. They accuse the slaughterhouses of abusing the horses, both in transport and as they are slaughtered. Both areas already are strictly regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture; if USDA regulations are inadequate, improving them is the appropriate corrective.

Proponents of the bill also say the slaughterhouses stink and cause environmental problems. State and local regulatory agencies are the appropriate authorities to fix those problems if they exist.

As many as 90,000 horses a year are slaughtered for human consumption. Prevent that and you'll have 90,000 aging beasts ripe for neglect and abuse, which is why the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Equine Practitioners oppose this legislation.

Horses grow old; they can't fend for themselves, and there simply aren't enough old horse homes to see all of them through their last days. Slaughtering them with a bolt gun that causes instantaneous death is the most gentle, humane way to bring their lives to a close. That a European or Asian might eat parts of them may offend American sensibilities, but making a federal case out of that is ridiculous

Also on CNN they have pictures of the horses stranded on the mound in the flood water in the Netherlands, their rescue efforts are tampered right now but they are feeding them hay and giving them fresh water. The owner of the horses might get prosecuted. I lit a candle for the Netherland horses too to be rescued safely, in the group name NETHE, praying for miracles today.

The author of that piece of garbage is obviously misguided and misinformed. That seems to be the problem throughout the country. Pro-slaughter has led the vast majority to believe that slaughter is humane, NOT, and it is for the old and infirm, once again NOT. Anyone who is far more eloquent than I, please write your rebuttals with the true fact.
BTW, Nancy Babcock's op-ed piece is excellent and she has given permission to share.

MY RESPONSE I SUBMITTED:

That was a very misinformed piece. Horses are not instantly killed with the bolt gun because they must be alive while they are hauled up by their hind legs and their throats are slit to bleed them. Many are still concious. The bolt gun is designed for cattle. Horses are much more agile and the bolt gun often strikes them repeatedly -in the head and through the eyes. The transport for these creatures is also inhumane as the Humane Society of Missouri can attest to with their rescue of 26 horses in a semi accident on the highway at the end of September. More suffering on an overcrowded filthy double stacked trailer on the way to a very painful barbaric death. Not a humane way at all to end the life of an American symbol.
As for humane consumption, we do not slaughter our cats and dogs for foreign culinary consumption.That would be un-American. So is the brutal slaughter of our horses.Is the writer of that editorial French?

This editorial just shows you how much work we really have to do. Many people are as misguided as this person who thinks they are only old, sick, unwanted horses that are HUMANELY put down by the stun gun.
These people REALLY believe what they are saying. This is the problem. It doesn't necessarily mean they are bad people...they just don't know the true facts!

I dislike it as much as you but these people don't really understand that it IS a big issue. All they know is that, in this time when the budget can't be balanced, our homeland security is threatened, healthcare sucks, why are people addressing a "horsey" issue. I would venture a guess that if this person saw a video of the true conditions, that opinion of "small potatoes" might change.

We are getting ready to head up to KY for the BC. As much as I am looking forward to seeing all of these talented beauties, I am going with a heavy heart. I am well aware of what an inspiration Barbaro is and how much good he has done, but I can't help to feel a huge void. He is going to be so missed at the races. I can only hope Barbaro has a comfortable weekend and then some...and I pray all of the horses make it home safely.
